Tony stared at the scrap metal that he knows came off of rhodey armor. What he doesn't understand is why does clint have it and want it bonded, smelted into tips of his arrows. What he really doesn't understand is why are all the blonde heroes into big brother.
Holding the metal and staring at clint like he lost his fucking mind, "you want new arrows with war machine armor as the tips???"
"Yeah, what is the problem?"
Staring at clint still, "sure... okay, are you in love with rhodey???"
"NO, pfft fuck you. In love with your super badass brother who can manhandle me with one hand. Pfft fuck you."
Tony put two fingers to his pulse then gawk at the archer as he stood there seemingly in denial and convinced his feelings aren't there. That is like Tony lining the iron man armor in pure metallic black. Is this what rhodey deals with his denial?
He has to apologies, "you and steve are ridiculous."
Clint hands slammed the workshop table, "STEVE LIKES RHODEY?"
"You understand that!!!??"

The Raft.
That’s where they sent you after they arrested you in Germany. The fucking Raft.
You haven’t even seen Wanda since you were handed your very unstylish new clothes and they made you change.
You got separated from her when they took you to your cell between Scott's and Sam's. You dread what they're going to do to her, but you're powerless to stop them.
You sit on the ground of your cell and don’t move from there, barely registering what happens around you until the sound of clapping snaps you out of your trance.
“The Futurist, gentlemen!” Clint shouts but you still don’t move, just listening to the scene. “The Futurist is here! He sees all! He knows what's best for you, whether you like it or not.”
“Give me a break, Barton.” You hear Tony say and almost show some emotion, but stop yourself. “I had no idea they'd put you here. Come on.”
You hear Clint spit and then say “Yeah, well, you knew they'd put us somewhere, Tony.”
“Yeah, but not some super-max floating ocean pokey. You know, this place is for maniacs. This is a place for…”
“Criminals?” Clint interrupts him. “Criminals, Tony. Think that's the word you're looking for. Right? That didn't used to mean me. Or Sam, or Y/N, or Wanda. But here we are.”
“Because you broke the law.” Tony says.
“Yeah.” Clint says back and starts chanting “La la la la la” while Tony talks, making you grin slightly.
“I didn't make you. You read it, you broke it.” Tony keeps talking. “Alright, you're all grown up, you got a wife and kids. I don't understand, why didn't you think about them before you chose the wrong side.” he says and your face falls again immediately, knowing Tony went too far.
“You gotta watch your back with this guy.” Clint says before slamming his hands on the bars angrily. “There's a chance he's gonna break it!”
“Hank Pym always said, you never can trust a Stark.” You hear Scott say from the cell on your right.
“Who are you?” Tony says, his voice closer to you than before, and you can hear Scott mumbling “Come on, man.”
Tony gets to your cell and sees you sitting on the ground, hugging your knees tight to your chest, your head resting back on the wall while you look straight ahead.
Tony is nothing short of shocked when he sees your face all beat up and bruised, your arm bandaged with blood seeping through it showing just how big and deep the cut is, all courtesy of Ayo.
“I never wanted to see you like this...” Tony says softly but you don’t even react to his words.
He’s standing in front of you but it’s like he’s not even there, like you’re looking right through him to something more interesting behind him.
Tony sighs and shakes his head before moving to Sam’s cell.
“How's Rhodes?” Sam asks right away.
“They're flying him to Columbia Medical tomorrow. So… fingers cross.” Tony answers and you close your eyes, grateful that he’s still alive at least. “What do you need? They feed you yet?”
“You're the good cop now?” Sam asks almost in disbelief.
“I'm just the guy who needs to know where Steve went.” Tony answers calmly.
“Well, you better go get a bad cop, because you're gonna have to go Mark Fuhrman on my ass to get information out of me.”
“Oh, I just knocked the 'A' out of their 'AV'.” Tony says, much too playfully for your taste. “We got about 30 seconds before they realize it's not their equipment.”
You furrow your eyebrows at his next sentence. “Just look. Because that is the fellow who was supposed to interrogate Barnes. Clearly, I made a mistake. Sam, I was wrong.”
Your eyes snap open at his apology and, even though you can’t see either of them, you know Sam’s feeling the same way as you, which is confirmed by his next sentence. “That's a first.”
“Cap is definitely off the reservation but he's about to need all the help he can get. We don't know each other very well. You don't have to-”
“Hey, it's alright.” Sam interrupts him, then you hear him sigh and after a little pause he says “Look, I'll tell you… but you have to go alone and as a friend.”
“Easy.” Tony says and Sam proceeds to tell him all about the Hydra base in Siberia and the other supersoldiers.
When Tony leaves, Sam once again tries to make sure you’re okay even if he hasn’t had luck at getting an answer out of you since you got here.
He knocks twice on the wall between you two then pauses and then knocks three more times fast before talking, a thing you two started doing since you both moved into the Avengers Compound so you would know it was the other knocking right away. “Are you okay?”
You don’t answer him and can hear him sighing before continuing talking.
“Look, I’m sorry you got caught up in this and-”
“I don’t regret the choice I made, Sam.” You interrupt him before he can finish his sentence, speaking up for the first time since you got arrested at the airport. “As much as this sucks, it was the right thing to do. I know it was.”
You don’t say anything else. Sam can tell you mean it and he knows better than to push you.
“They’ll be okay.” He says after a moment of silence and then lets you be.
You know he means Steve, Bucky and Tony but you can’t help but think he’s trying to reassure you that Bucky’s gonna be fine.
And you can only hope that he’s right.
-
A couple of weeks after Tony’s visit there’s a commotion in the prison.
You haven’t so much as made a sound since that day, aside from your daily knock on the wall between you and Sam so he can make sure you’re okay, knowing you well enough to know you don’t want to talk but still wanting to check in.
But you can’t help but let out a loud gasp when you see Steve just standing in front of your cells.
You look around when the cell doors open and you hesitantly get up from the floor and walk towards Steve. He hugs Sam, then you, then Clint and then pats Scott on the back, but doesn’t linger long before he’s guiding you towards another level where Wanda is.
You get to her just as the door to her cell opens and you rush inside with Clint to take off her collar while he takes off her straightjacket. You hug her tightly and wrap your arm around her with Clint to help her move you since she looks a little worse for wear.
You manage to move through the prison without problems. You have to hand it to Steve, he’s a hell of a criminal.
When you get to the landing pad you see the Quinjet ready for take off and you all rush inside just to see Bucky at the commands and you smile brightly at the sight.
You have no time to comment, though, as Sam shouts “What are you waiting for?! Go!”
Bucky rolls his eyes but calmly says “We have one more coming.”
You frown. One more? You turn to Steve confusedly but before you can ask anything you can see blond hair darting into the Quinjet and then Natasha’s there.
Bucky instantly takes off and you all take seats and buckle up.
There’s a moment of silence while everyone processes what just happened, but you break it while looking at Natasha that’s sitting directly in front of you.
“Are we gonna talk about the hair?” You ask arching your eyebrow with a smirk.
She groans in annoyance and you can hear the others chuckling while she says “We are not.”
-
After a few hours you all get to a safehouse and Steve ushers you in before showing you around.
It’s not bad: a secluded cabin with three bedrooms, not too big but Steve assured you you wouldn’t be staying there long anyway. Which makes sense, you're on the run now so this is just temporary.
After the tour Bucky approaches you in the living room and only then you notice he’s missing his metal arm.
“You flew the jet with only one arm? That’s impressive…” You can’t help yourself as you reach to touch his left shoulder, your eyes fixated on it. But stop on your tracks when you feel his right hand carefully cupping your cheek.
Your eyes snap up to his and you can see him thoroughly inspecting the wounds in your face that are still healing a little. He grimaces when he looks down at your bandaged arm and whispers “I’m sorry…”
“It’s nothing I can’t handle, Sergeant.” You smile softly at him and put your hand over his still on your cheek, trying to reassure him that you’re fine.
“I bet you can, doll.” He chuckles.
You’re too busy staring at each other to notice everyone’s attention is on you until Steve clears his throat with an apologetic look on his face.
“We need to go, Buck.” He says and you look confusedly between the two men.
“I’m going back into cryo.” Bucky clarifies for you.
“Oh.” Is all you can say and your eyes widen for a second before you force yourself to put on a more neutral face.
“It’s okay.” He smiles at you, but you feel like he’s trying to convince himself as much as you. “It’s nothing I can’t handle, doll.”
You try your best to smile and not look too bummed out. “I bet you can, Sergeant.”
You hesitate for a moment before surprising him, the others and even yourself by giving him a hug. He hesitates too before delicately hugging you back and, after a moment, you pull away.
He smiles at you with a faint blush and you smile back, watching him walk to the door.
Steve passes you on his way to the door and kisses your forehead, whispering “He’ll be okay” before saying goodbye to the rest of the team, assuring you that he’ll be back soon. Then he also goes through the door and soon both the supersoldiers are gone.
You turn around with a sigh and see Sam, Natasha and Clint standing there, grinning at you, Wanda and Scott looking more compassionate than teasing.
You narrow your eyes at the first three and say sternly “Not. A. Word.” punctuating every word by pointing threateningly at each of them.
They raise their hands in mock surrender while snickering but thankfully don’t say anything and everyone just scatters around the safehouse.
You see the Quinjet depart from the window and try your best to look at the bright side: This isn’t forever, you’ll see him again.
Right?

Tony: Platypus, I think Steve is cheating on me.
Rhodey: What!? That lying bastard! Wait, how do you know?
Tony: I don't actually have any actual proof.
Rhodey: Oh, then I'm sure he's not cheating on you. And if he is, he's a monster. And if he's not, you guys are great together. But if he is, I will kill him.

Rhodey: Hey, what have you two been doing? Tony: we were helping Steve with his wedding vows and we were kicked out of their house for making it "inappropriate". Clint: How is “Nice ass, Buck” inappropriate?

Bucky was pacing the floor of your bedroom. You were sat on the bed, knees clutched to your chest watching him. It was 4am and Bucky hadn't sat down since Steve came by to tell him the news. After you had left The Roxy, Steve and the others were going to follow but got held up some over enthusiastic party goers. In the mess of people, Natasha disappeared and never checked back in.
You were doing your best to keep yourself together. Natasha was a smart woman and she no doubt could handle herself but you couldn't stop your mind from going to the worst outcome. Bucky slamming his fists against the granite countertop in the bathroom brought you back from your thoughts.
"Fuck!" He shouted, startling you.
"Babe." You called softly, him breaking the sink wouldn't do Natasha any good. He ignored you, but you could see his broad back rising and falling as he breathed. You stood up and slipped your robe on before walking over to him.
"Babe." You said again, placing your hands gently upon his shoulders. He softened at your touch and loosened his grip on the countertop.
"It's my fault." He sighed. You shook your head,
"No. No, it's not your fault." You denied. He turned to look at you, his face riddled with worry.
"Yes, it is. Somehow, he caught on to my plan or he knew what Natasha was to me and-"
"James, stop." You held his face in your hands. "It is not your fault. We'll find her." You stated. He brought his hand up to rest on yours as you continued to hold his face. He kissed your palm and moved to rest his forehead against yours.
"You should go back to bed." He sighed.
"Not without you. Losing sleep isn't going to help find her either." Bucky nodded reluctantly and followed you back to the mattress. Neither of you got much sleep and when you awoke you found Bucky in the living room pouring over a table full of files and papers. Steve and Sam were there as well, Logan and Clint were on their way.
"This was everything Tasha had on Stark. He must've known she was a threat and that's why she-" Steve stopped himself. Bucky sat down on the off white couch, he was still in his bathrobe from this morning. Elbows on his knees he placed his head in his hands. You hurried yourself to get out of bed and get decent before you joined the others. Had no one else been here you would’ve flung yourself onto him and hoped the closeness would help take some of the burden away. But Nat needed you just as much as Bucky did and you were going to find her whatever it took.
“She found his rabbit hole and his right hand man Rhodey.” Sam spoke up. “That should be enough for us to go on. I can get Logan and Clint to help get this man to talk.”
You walked in the room and Sam and Steve both turned to you, somber smiles on their faces as you went to sit beside Bucky. He looked up, taking his hands from his face as you rubbed comforting circles on his back.
“Heres what were gonna do.” He started, scooting forward on the couch so he could be closer to the pool on info Nat had acquired. “Sam, you take Clint to track down this Rhodey, guy. Whatever you gotta do to do it, do it. Just try to keep it discreet.” Bucky looked over to Steve,
“You are gonna meet me at the warehouse with everything we need to get this pig to squeal. And I mean everything.”
You realized that really only left Logan and you without something to do and your stomach dropped as Bucky turned to you,
“No.” You shook your head. “No!”
“Babe, I need you safe and Logan is-
“No! You promised me you wouldn’t leave my side!” You shouted, Steve and Sam averted their gazes.
“I know but I can’t have you go missing too, alright? Logan can keep you safe I trust that man with my own life.” Bucky cupped your face in his hands.
“I don’t care about that, I wanna help find Nat! She’s my friend too and you swore you wouldn’t do this to me!” You stood up, hovering over him.
“Y/N, please. I’m trying my best here, alright. I can’t lose you too!”
“What about you, huh? I can’t lose you either.” You retorted and Bucky let out a sigh.
“Fine, we’ll figure something out.” He conceded and you sat back down. He placed a kiss on the top of your head and focused back on Steve and Sam and how they intended to find Rhodey.
FOUR HOURS LATER
Logan and Clint had arrived and Bucky sent Sam and Clint out to find Rhodey. Steve left before they arrived to set up the warehouse as Bucky requested. Bucky had since changed from his bathrobe into a maroon suit. It was just Logan, Bucky and yourself in the penthouse. He was much larger than you had last remembered, then again the last time you saw him was so brief you hadn’t really gotten a good look. Bucky and Logan went out on the balcony to talk while you stayed inside, thinking about nothing but how Natasha was doing. Was she ok? Was she alive? Part of you wished you hadn’t convinced Bucky to leave early that night. If you hadn’t than maybe she wouldn’t have gotten kidnapped.
There was a knock at the door and you stood up from the couch, waiting for Bucky to come back in to open it. A moment passed and a note slipped underneath the door, fear started creeping up your spine as you walked towards it. Bucky was still on the balcony, he must not have heard the knock. Carefully you picked it up, looking up at Bucky once before deciding to open it yourself.
Dear Mr. Barnes,
I know what you were planning to do with Rhodey, your men were intercepted. Don’t worry, everyone remains unharmed including that lovely red head. I’d love to keep it that way unless you prove difficult. Meet me at the old abandoned disco at 9:00 and lets talk. And bring that gorgeous girl of yours too, man she is quite the beauty. Till then,
T. Stark
“Whats that?” Bucky’s voice startled you and with a shaking hand you handed the note to him. Logan came to stand beside him watching intently. Bucky crumpled the note without a sound.
“We’ve been compromised.” Logan said it more as a knowing statement than a question.
Tumblr media
“He intercepted Sam and Clint.” Bucky’s voice was low and you knew he was doing his best to keep his anger in check. Logan took in a breath, his hands on his thick leather belt. Bucky ran a hand through his hair and gave Logan a subtle nod. You looked between the two men for a moment before you were swept up by Logan. Throwing you over his shoulder as you squirmed and writhed, you watched Bucky holster his pistol on his hip. Logan was leading you towards the bedroom where he tossed you onto the bed,
“Bucky you bastard! You bastard!” You shouted as Logan locked you inside. You slammed your hands on the doors, still shouting at him.
“I’m sorry, doll. I love you.” Bucky whispered through the crack of the door to you and you let out a whimper,
“Bastard.”
You let your body slide against the door till you landed on the floor, bringing your knees to your chest as you cried.
“Keep her safe, no matter what.” You heard him tell Logan before he left and you filled with anger again. Through teary eyes you looked over to the left at the window. Wiping your face on your arm, you stood and walked towards it. Looking down at the city below and the drain pipe that so conveniently led all the way down.

I Lost My Phone! (Avengers x Reader)
So due to all of the birthday posts celebrating Steve, I realized that on my school-induced Tumblr hiatus, I missed a shit-ton of birthdays between Bucky’s and Steve’s. So there’s gonna be a ton of birthday posts coming for the MCU characters that I can find birthdays for. In the meantime, enjoy this fic that’s taken me months to write and find inspiration for.
Warnings: slight Sam x Reader, my taste in music (that deserves its own warning any day), reader being called just about every nickname I could think of, swearing.
Word Count: 3950
Summary: Reader’s ADHD causes her to lose her phone a lot, when the Avengers find out she has specialized ringtones for all of them, they’re obsessed with finding out what they all are.
For an Avenger, you were actually pretty young. You were older than Peter, but still younger than Wanda and Pietro. You were close with all three of them, and you all loved to make references that confused the fuck out of everyone else. You also had ADHD, which meant lots of things. For you, it meant that something specific, like a bobby pin from 3 years ago, was fresh in your mind. Your top left desk drawer, underneath the colouring books, to be exact. But, you were always fidgeting with something; your ring, a pen, tapping your fingers, and literally anything you could get your hands on. You spaced out a lot, so you would fidget with a pen during meetings so you could actually pay attention. Also, you had this terrible habit of losing everything that wasn’t specific; your phone, wallet, keys were left everywhere around the compound.
You were sitting in the lab one day, fidgeting with a brain puzzle Tony had left on his lab bench while he was upgrading something into your suit. “Kiddo?” He asked, “Peter just texted me that he texted you hours ago and you still haven’t responded. He wants to know if you’re mad at him, and if you’re still on for that late lunch picnic.”
“Oh, would you let him know that I’m not mad at him and that I’ll get all the stuff for the picnic if he’s willing to swing us to where we’re going?” You responded.
“Sure, I can do that,” Tony replied, drafting his response to Peter. “Why haven’t you responded to him?”
You laughed. “I have no idea where my phone is, Mr. Stark. I haven’t seen it in hours, and I have no clue where I left it.”
Tony laughed too, having done the same thing many times over the years, though you did it far more often than he ever did. “I’ll just call you then, it’ll help. Unless your phone’s on vibrate?”
“No, it’s not on vibr- wait, don’t call me!” You exclaimed, but it was too late. Who’s Your Daddy by Toby Keith started playing from upstairs, and you ran up to the kitchen where you found your phone ringing on the counter.
Clint and Natasha were sitting at the counter, drinking yet another coffee. “Why is that your ringtone for Tony?” She asked.
“I, uh- it’s- I-” You stumbled over your words, turning your phone off, blushing as Tony came up the stairs behind you.
“Why is that your ringtone for me, kiddo?” He asked, wrapping an arm around your shoulders. You could easily escape if you wanted to, but it was his way of letting you know that he actually wanted an answer.
“My dad was shitty, my parents sold me into HYDRA as soon as my powers manifested, and when you guys got me out.. I just kinda.. y’know.” You said, hiding your head in your hands.
Clint rubbed your arm softly, “Hey, don’t forget about that picnic with Peter.”
“Oh, shit! He’ll be here any minute! I have to pack the food!” You scrambled around the kitchen, your gravitational powers making everything around you float as you did, and you didn’t even notice Tony slip your phone into your back pocket, just so you wouldn’t forget it again.
There was a knock in the kitchen doorway, and you turned to see Peter. “Y/N/N!”
“Peter!” You ran over to wrap him in a hug.
“You didn’t have your phone, did you?”
“Had no idea where it was. Mr. Stark had to call me.” You said, nuzzling into his chest.
Peter chuckled, “So I guess they know what your ringtone is now?” You blushed and pressed yourself further into his chest, wanting to disappear. “Do they know what it is for me?” He asked. You shook your head and tried to stop him from pulling his phone out, but he called you anyways.
You grabbed his hand and started leaving with the food as the Spiderman theme song started playing in your pocket. You turned it off and called behind you. “Goodbye Mr. Barton, Ms. Romanoff, Mr. Dad!”
“What did she just say?” You heard Tony ask as the doors shut behind the both of you.
“What did I do?” You asked while Peter was swinging you to a spot you had deemed as the ‘Kids Room’. Only Peter, Wanda, Pietro, and you were allowed in, and it was just a treehouse that Tony had built in the woods that surrounded the Compound. But it was fun not letting any of the other Avengers in.
“You called Mr. Stark something you probably didn’t mean to.”
“Peter, what did I say?”
“You called him ‘Mr. Dad.’” Peter explained, you groaned, hiding your face in his neck.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next time you couldn’t find your phone was actually the next day in the gym. Tony had designed you special wireless headphones that would work up to a mile away from your actual phone. Meaning that your phone could be anywhere in the Compound, and while listening to your music, you would have no idea. You had come back last night from your outing with Peter, and got him to swing you directly up to your bedroom so you didn’t have to run into anyone else, before kissing his cheek and telling him good night. You didn’t have feelings for him, it was just something you two always did.
“Captain Rogers!” You called from your place on top of the gymnastics bars, “Have you seen my phone anywhere? I can’t remember where I left it.”
Steve shook his head in response, “I’m sorry, kiddo, I haven’t. Do you want me to call it for you?” He asked, pulling his phone out already.
“Yeah, that might be a good idea- wait.” You dropped off the bars as soon as you heard the first bar of Ice Ice Baby. “Shit!” You exclaimed, running towards the noise.
“Language!” Steve called, following you. His super-soldier hearing was sure to hear what his ringtone was.
You pulled open the cabinet with the mugs, where you had left your phone this morning after pouring your coffee, and declined the call. “Thanks, Captain.” You muttered, walking off to take your post-training shower.
“I’m starting to think she does this on purpose,” Clint said, poking his head out of the vents.
“What do you mean?” Steve asked in response.
“Just yesterday Y/N forgot where her phone was while Peter was trying to get a hold of her, and Tony had to call her phone. It was sitting on the counter. At least she has a good sense of humour. I wonder what her ringtone is for me..” He wondered thoughtfully.
“What was her ringtone for Tony?” Steve always had more questions.
“Some country song called Who’s Your Daddy. Y/N evidently sees Stark as a father figure, she even called him Mr. Dad by accident yesterday as she was leaving for her picnic with Peter.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was only a few hours later when you couldn’t find your phone yet again. “I’m starting to wonder if someone’s just moving it when I’m not paying attention.” You said, patting your pockets as you walked into the kitchen where Clint was pouring yet another cup of coffee.
“What’s wrong, kiddo?” He asked.
“I can’t find my phone, again!” You exclaimed. “It’s the second time today that it hasn’t been exactly where I thought it was!”
Clint chuckled, “Where did you think you left it this time?”
“My pocket.” You deadpanned, subtly looking behind him to see if he had hidden it from you so he could find out what his ringtone was.
“Should I call you?”
“I wouldn’t. I’ll find it in a few minutes, don’t worry about it.” It was at that moment that you heard Men in Tights from Robin Hood coming from in between the couch cushions.
You dove towards the couch, but Clint, being taller and stronger, beat you there. “Really? This is my ringtone?”
“Robin Hood’s an archer!” You defended yourself, reaching across him for your phone to turn it off.
Nat walked in at that moment, and started chuckling at the position the two of you were in. “So, sexual tension with people other than your wife, Barton?”
“Nat, he took my phone.” You whined, unable to reach it without physically climbing him.
“Clint, give Y/N her phone back. Y/N, stop getting mad that people are finding out what your ringtones for them are. You have an excellent sense of humor, and nobody has been mad about their ringtone yet.”
“You guys are keeping a list, aren’t you?” You grimaced.
Clint and Natasha both laughed, “And keeping track of who laughs at which one.” He added.
“Ouch.” You said softly, putting your phone back in your pocket and heading back into the kitchen. “What’s for dinner?”
“Nobody’s really sure yet. What do you want?” Nat replied.
“If there’s one thing I learned from my missions with HYDRA, it was how to make a mean mac n’ cheese.” You said, pulling the ingredients out of the cupboards.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you woke up the next morning, it was to someone banging on your door. “Y/N! Training! You’re late!”
You groaned, rolling towards the noise and off the edge of your bed. “Fuck!” You exclaimed, having hit your head on the nightstand.
Bucky rushed in, “Y/N, are you alright, doll?” He helped you sit up while you were holding the back of your head.
“I-” You hissed softly, “hit my head. It hurts, Sarge.”
“Yeah, you’ve got a pretty good gash there, kid. Why weren’t you already up?”
“I don’t know where my phone is, it never went off with my alarm. I always leave it plugged in right there.” You explained, pointing to your laptop, which was currently plugged in. “Huh, charged the laptop last night instead?”
“Let me call you, doll. And then we’ll get you down to Helen in the medbay to get you all fixed up, you’re bleeding.”
“Okay, that’s a good plan.” You started to say, “Wait, my ringt-” But it was too late, Rasputin was playing from somewhere under your bed.
Bucky laid down on his stomach to get it for you. “Nice choice, kid.” He said, passing your phone back to you before he picked you up bridal style. “Let’s get you to Helen.”
You were able to keep track of your phone for the next three days, but while reading on the couch you realized it had been hours since you had last seen it. “Ms. Romanoff?” You called, knowing she was sitting in the kitchen. “I haven’t seen my phone in hours, have you seen it anywhere?”
“Sorry, sweetie, I haven’t. I can call you?” She pulled her phone out, and as she did you remembered what your ringtone is for her.
“I wouldn’t do-” You started to say until you heard Black Widow by Iggy Azalea playing from the fridge. You stood up and walked over to it, opening the door. “What the fuck is my phone doing in there?”
“You must’ve traded your phone for a YOP drink.” Natasha said, ending the call from her end of the phone. “Hm, Barnes was right, you do have good taste in music.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With Bruce you were always pretty good at keeping your phone handy, which was good, because you didn’t actually have a special ringtone for him, which you guessed made him special in his own right. You just could never think of a song that fit him well enough to be special enough for his ringtone. You spent a little extra time with Bruce to make up for it, plus you figured that whenever you moved your phone, he would make sure that he knew where it was so you wouldn’t lose it. You had a sneaking suspicion that Hulk liked you too, if the way you were able to calm him down was any indication.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was about a week after Natasha had helped you find your phone that you had lost it again. Thor and Loki were back, and while Loki often stayed on Asgard, since Thor insisted he was actually the better king, you enjoyed getting to spend time with both of them. They did both have phones now, since Tony had forced it upon them both last time they were on Earth, so you all would have a means of getting a hold of them, other than praying Heimdall would hear you. They both immediately came to you for help on understanding the Midgardian device. Similar to what Steve and Bucky did with their first phones too, actually.
You had been searching for the last 20 minutes, all over the Compound, and you couldn’t find your phone anywhere. It wasn’t anywhere in your room, your bathroom, you checked all the kitchen cupboards and the fridge, twice; and you had even checked all the furniture in the main living room where you and Loki had been quietly reading that morning after training. Nothing. Your phone was nowhere to be found. You had even poked your head into the lab while Tony and Bruce were gone to see if Peter had seen it. Still no. Your phone was gone. You were just going to have to get a new one and transfer over all of the data. You groaned, flopping down on the couch, data transfers take for-fucking-ever.
“Little angel?” Loki asked. “Is something wrong?”
“I can’t find my phone, as per usual. I’m just gonna go get a new one and do a data transfer, which takes for-fucking-ever to load and it’s annoying as shit.” You flopped your head to look over at him on the other couch, pouting.
“Why don’t you just get someone to call your phone?” He asked. “I can do it if you’d like.”
You sighed, resigned to have left it somewhere stupid yet again. “I guess you’re my last option, Mischief.” Loki pulled his phone out of his pocket and tapped on your contact, calling you. bad guy by Billie Eilish started playing from down the hall, in the training room. You ran towards the noise, picking your phone up once you got there. “Now I remember! I didn’t have pockets in my workout clothes this morning, so I left my phone on the bench. I haven’t needed it, so I didn’t think twice about not having it.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You also didn’t have a ringtone for Rhodey, but he was almost never around, and he never called you anyways. You only had his number in case of emergency, mostly for when Tony was stupidly drunk or if he was fighting with Steve and nobody could get them off of each other.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The morning after Loki had helped you find your phone, you couldn’t find it again. “Nope, I’m not gonna bother, it’ll show up in a few minutes.. or hours..” You mumbled, curling up on the couch with your book.
Three hours later, after finishing your book, going to training, taking a shower, making everyone lunch, and running some errands, you still hadn’t seen your phone anywhere. You retraced your steps throughout the day, pausing momentarily to ask Bruce if you had had it when you stopped in the lab this morning to ask Tony about an upgrade to your suit. Apparently not.
“Lady Y/N?” Thor asked, coming up behind you. “Are you feeling alright? You’ve been running back and forth across the compound looking like a- what’s the saying?”
“A chicken with my head cut off?” You asked, sighing.
“Yes, that’s it!” Thor exclaimed. “Is something wrong?”
“I can’t find my phone, Thor. That’s all. I’m sure it’ll turn up somewhere.”
Thor picked you up and put you on his shoulders. “If I called you, milady, would it help?”
“I suppose..” You told him, using your gravitational powers to float safely back to the ground. Thor pulled his phone out and you heard Thunder by Imagine Dragons playing from the lab downstairs. “But.. I didn’t have it when I was down here this morning? I guess I could’ve left it down here last night and since it’s the weekend none of my alarms would’ve gone off.”
“Oh, crap, Y/N, I am so sorry.” Bruce said, looking up from his computer. “I was cleaning up the lab this morning and I must’ve put some things on top of your phone and then Tony moved them, and-”
“Bruce, if I had really needed it, I would’ve gotten someone to call it for me sooner. My only missed call is from Thor. Trust me, it’s alright.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you couldn’t find your phone again right after dinner, you were starting to worry about yourself. I can’t possibly misplace it this often, you thought to yourself. Somebody has to be moving it when I’m not paying attention so they can find out all my ringtones. Or maybe I really am this forgetful. Should I ask Dr. Cho about upping my meds? Should I go off my meds and see what happens? Should I-
“Y/N/N? You alright, sweetie?” Sam asked, interrupting your train of thought.
You jumped, not having heard his knock on your door. “Oh, Sammy! You scared me! I didn’t hear you come in.”
“It’s alright. You were really lost in thought, huh?”
“Yeah, I was.” You ducked your head, blushing. “Did you need something?”
“I was just coming to check on you. FRIDAY said you were in here pacing.”
“Oh, yeah, I do that when I’m stressed. Sorry.”
“It doesn’t bother me, honey. Why are you stressed?” He asked, sitting on your bed and patting the spot next to him.
“I just feel like somebody has to be taking my phone and hiding it. I can’t possibly misplace it this often, right? I was thinking that I should talk to Dr. Cho about my med dosage since I feel like I’m more disorganized on them than I am off. It’s not even just my phone, other than the bobby pin under the colouring books in my top left desk drawer, I never know where anything is anymore.”
“Okay, so we’ll find your phone and go talk to Helen about your meds. Problem solved.” Sam wrapped an arm around you and pulled out his phone to call you.
You nuzzled into his side and mumbled, “What if I don’t want you to find out what my ringtone for you is?”
He kissed the top of your head. “We’ve all loved your ringtones for us, honey. Do you trust me?”
“Of course I do.” As you said this, Sam clicked the ‘call’ button on your contact and Fly Like A Bird by Nelly Furtado started playing from the hallway. You opened the door and found your phone on the little table next to your door. “Fuck.” You said under your breath.
“Hey,” Sam said, wrapping you in a hug and resting his chin on your head. “That’s hilarious, sweetie. I love it.”
You turned around in his arms and wrapped your own around him, “You’re not mad?”
“Of course not. Now what’s this I hear about Barnes having his hands on my girl last week while I was on a mission?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After fixing your meds up with Sam and Dr. Cho, you were able to keep track of your phone for about 5 days. Sam helped. But, now, you had just finished training with Wanda and Pietro and you had no idea where your phone was. This was especially making you think you were crazy since these workout clothes have pockets. Both front and back. “Sammy! Have you seen my phone?” You asked, poking your head into his apartment.
“Sorry, sweetheart.” He called from under the bathroom sink. “Have you asked Wanda and Pietro? I know you were just training with them.”
“Nope, I came here on my way to them. I’ll see you tonight?”
“Of course you will, it’s movie night.”
“Right, yeah. I forgot. Okay, I’m gonna go find Wanda and Piet, but I’ll see you later.” You said, kissing his forehead and shutting the door behind you. The next thing you knew, you heard Red by Taylor Swift playing from somewhere above you. That was your ringtone for Wanda, she was calling you?
“Up here, sora!” You heard Wanda call from the balcony. Looking up, you saw her waving your phone and you quickly used your gravity powers to float it down to you. “Oh, Y/N/N, you did such a great job controlling your powers!” Wanda shouted, running down the stairs to wrap you in a hug.
Pietro was right behind her, and all of a sudden you were in the middle of a group hug with the twins. “Well, princessa, now that we know what your ringtone for Wanda is, we have to find out what it is for me.”
“Speed, I am speed.” came blaring through your phone speakers in the voice of Owen Wilson, who played Lightning McQueen in the movie Cars. You sighed, dropping your head onto Wanda’s shoulder as you declined Pietro’s call.
“That is the best thing in the world, princessa.” Pietro said, speeding you back to your apartment. “We’ll see you at movie night tonight?”
You nodded, leaning in the doorway. “Of course you will, Speedy. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning, just when you thought you were done with everybody calling you to find out their ringtone, King T’Challa and Princess Shuri showed up.
“Y/N?” Shuri asked, knocking on your door, “Are you awake yet, love?”
You flung your door open, “Yes, I am, but I was looking for my phone before I came out for breakfast.”
“Oh, let me just call you.” Shuri pulled out her phone and called you, and Get Lucky by Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams started playing from down the hallway, in the kitchen.
You walked down the hall, into the kitchen, where everybody was eating breakfast, blushing. “Couldn’t find your phone again, honey?” Sam asked. You nodded, grabbing it out from under your favourite mug.
“How did it even get out here? I had it last night in bed.”
“No you didn’t, you were in here making popcorn and brought your phone with you. You never brought it back, so I just assumed you grabbed it on our way to bed last night.”
“I must not have.” You said, finally remembering to hang up the call to make the song stop.
Natasha wrote something down on her phone, you assumed she was continuing to add to the list of ringtones she was keeping. “Hey, T’Challa, you’re the only one that we don’t know Y/N’s ringtone for, would you mind calling her for us?” Tony asked.
“Of course I can,” T’Challa said, pulling his phone out.
You quickly tapped on your phone, changing T’Challa’s ringtone while you still had a chance. Unfortunately, you weren’t fast enough because The Pink Panther started playing as your phone lit up with a call from the Wakandan King. “Crap.” You mumbled, declining the call.
“Oh, honey.” Sam said, walking over to you and wrapping you in a hug. “Your sense of humour is absolutely the light of our lives. Has anybody disliked what Y/N/N’s ringtone for them was?” Everybody shook their heads.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All in all, losing your phone so often because of your ADHD didn’t end up being so bad. But Clint got his ass kicked when Peter found your phone left in the vents one day. Turns out, when Clint isn’t hiding your phone, you actually don’t lose it all that often.
I hope you enjoyed! Once again, I have no idea how to end fics, so you get that piece of shit as a last paragraph.
Chapter One June 2018 Avengers Facility, Upstate New York (Previous Book)
“Dear Mister Fantasy, play us a tune, something to make us all happy. Do anything, take us out of this gloom. Sing a song, play guitar, make it snappy…”
As (Y/N) listened to the melancholy song blaring at an unhealthy volume through her earbuds, she stared up at the ceiling of hers and Steve’s bedroom and studied the subtle imperfections of the dry paint. The longer she stared at the slight ridges and streaks above her, the more they stopped looking like slight ridges and streaks and started to resemble the handful of faces she was trying her hardest to ignore.
“You are the one who can make us all laugh, but doing that you break out in tears. Please don’t be sad if it was a straight mind you had, we wouldn’t have known you all these years…”
Her throat tightened in grief as Sam’s teasing smile and playful gaze morphed into existence, quickly joined by Wanda’s devastated expression as she destroyed the Mind Stone embedded in Vision’s forehead and Bucky’s friendly but tortured eyes.
“Dear Mister Fantasy, play us a tune, something to make us all happy. Do anything, take us out of this gloom. Sing a song, play guitar, make it snappy, yeah…”
T’Challa’s regal and commanding stare materialized beside the others and her own eyes began to well with fresh tears when her old friend Greg’s cheerful face appeared; she didn’t know that her friend and book publisher was among the Vanished until they all returned to the Avengers Compound and began taking a census, the shocking realization bringing with it a fresh wave of pain and anguish at the thought of Mara, Abbie and Leo having to grapple with his sudden disappearance.
“Dear Mister Fantasy, play us a tune, something to make us all happy. Do anything, take us out of this gloom. Sing a song, play guitar, make it snappy…”
(Y/N) squeezed her eyes shut when Loki’s face came to mind, but she was unable to stop herself as she thought about the brave and misunderstood friend who offered her protection and support in one of her most desperate hours and who selflessly sacrificed himself while attempting to stop Thanos before it was too late. She struggled to cope with his loss, partially because she hadn’t been there to witness it herself but mostly because out of everyone residing at the Avengers Compound, she was the only one who truly saw the gentle and loyal side of the God of Mischief; Thor did, too, but the God of Thunder adamantly refused to speak or even look into her eyes after their defeat in Wakanda three weeks earlier. She knew that he blamed himself for not killing Thanos before he could use the Infinity Stones and although no one dared to say it out loud, she also knew that he felt responsible for her very personal loss.
“You are the one who can make us all laugh, but doing that you break out in tears. Please don’t be sad if it was a straight mind you had, we wouldn’t have known you all these years…”
Imagining Carina and how the infant looked when they said goodbye to her right before leaving to battle the Black Order and defend Vision – her tear-filled (Y/E/C) eyes and sweet little pout as she looked up at her adoring parents – proved to be the final straw. (Y/N) sat up on the bed and ripped the earbuds out of her ears, switching the old MP3 player off and setting it on the nightstand before wiping away the tears that managed to escape; she managed to hold back the sob that had started building in her chest and took a quivering breath to try calming herself down.
It had been three weeks since Thanos snapped his fingers and used the six Infinity Stones to wipe out half of all life in the universe, three weeks since the Mad Titan walked through a portal and disappeared without a trace, and three weeks since (Y/N) lost her daughter and her friends in the blink of an eye. After everything they’d done since that terrible moment they realized they’d lost – returning to the Avengers Compound, conducting deep space scans to hunt down Thanos, documenting a complete census of the Vanished, becoming acquainted with the cosmic superhero who was summoned back to Earth by Fury before he himself Vanished, and checking in with their surviving friends and family – it still felt as though (Y/N) was trapped in a waking nightmare. Every day for the past twenty-two days, she woke up with thoughts of Carina on her mind and in one heartbreaking moment, she remembered all over again that her daughter was gone and an insurmountable wave of grief would threaten to overtake her.
After taking one final gulp of air, (Y/N) stood and crossed the room to the closed bathroom door, her hand hovering over the doorknob for a brief moment of hesitation before grasping it and slowly opening the door. Steve, who’d been leaning against the sink and staring morosely at his own reflection in the mirror, looked over at her and attempted to smile, but the haunting emptiness in his azure eyes remained; he set the razor he’d used to shave off the physical evidence of his two years on the run down in the sink and ran a hand over his smooth chin. “Yeah, I figured I was overdue for a shave.”
“You were looking a little scruffy.” Stepping into the room, (Y/N) pulled a towel off of the wall rack and carefully wiped away the spots of shaving cream he’d missed. “You and Rocket were beginning to look like twins.”
The super-soldier huffed out a quiet chuckle as his large hands moved to rest on her hips while she continued her methodical task. “Speaking of the talking raccoon, I saw that he disassembled your Bug’s engine; I thought that he was only supposed to be checking your brakes?”
“Well, after he finished with the brakes, he said that he should check out the rest of the car because – and I quote – ‘you humies don’t know jack-shit about machinery.’ He needed a distraction and seems to really enjoy fixing things, so I just let him continue working.” Her movements slowed as she recalled something she’d witnessed earlier that evening and it wasn’t until Steve started running his hands up and down her sides that she finally spoke. “He misses Groot and his friends, the other Guardians of the Galaxy he was telling us about. I saw him sitting in the driver’s seat earlier, listening to one of my old 80’s compilation cassette tapes and staring off at the woods across the lake.”
Steve pursed his lips and nodded. “Thor told Nat that one of the Guardians, a guy named Quill, was originally from Earth and that he loved music as much as you do; she’s been trying to get more intel from both of them to see if Quill’s still got any living family here, but she hasn’t had much luck going off of one name.”
“I can’t say that I blame either of them. They want to forget.” (Y/N) set the towel down on the bathroom sink and lowered her gaze, unable to look at Steve without seeing a hint of their daughter in his features. “I just…” Her lower lip trembled and she blinked back her rapidly-forming tears. “I want to forget, too. Even if it’s just for one night, one moment, I…I-I just want to feel something other than pain.” She mustered up enough courage to glance up and into Steve’s reddened eyes. “Make me forget. Please, sweetheart, make me forget about it all for just one night.”
“We’ll forget together,” Steve promised, a tear trailing down his cheek as he leaned down and captured her lips in a passionate kiss; while she kissed him back with equal vigor, he backed her up against the sink and without warning, he lifted her up by her waist to sit on the bathroom counter and stood between her parted legs. Their kisses were desperate and needy, a far cry from the romantic reconnection she’d spent her entire pregnancy longing for, but their urgency to lose themselves in one another put any thought besides the two of them entirely out of their minds; (Y/N)’s arms wrapped around Steve’s neck and her fingers weaved through his long blonde hair, tugging on the locks and eliciting a sinful groan from Steve. The super-soldier broke their kiss and began to trail his lips down her jawline and along the column of her throat, causing her to tip her head back for easier access and stifle her own satisfied moan.
But just when Steve’s hands were beginning to tug the hem of her shirt upwards, he suddenly stilled against her. “Do you feel that?”
“Hmm?” (Y/N) struggled to regain her breath and comprehend what her fiancé was talking about but moments later, her question was answered when the counter she was seated on began to shake. Her brow furrowed in confusion as she glanced around the bathroom, noticing the mounted makeup mirror quivering and the window pane rattling in its frame, and she pulled away from Steve with her eyes widened in realization. “Oh my God. Do you think that Carol finally found the Benatar?”
Steve nodded as his azure eyes filled with a glimmer of hope. “Let’s go find out.” With a final fleeting kiss, the two of them quickly dressed and hurried outside to where Rhodes, Bruce, Natasha, Rocket and a distraught Pepper were all gathered; the CEO of Stark Industries and Tony’s fiancée had been staying with them at the compound since they’d returned from Wakanda, and she’d spent many sleepless nights analyzing deep space scans in a desperate effort to find Tony and bring him home safely. The super-soldier’s hand squeezed (Y/N)’s tight as they joined the others and they looked up in time to see a massive spacecraft descent from the sky; Carol Danvers, the former U.S. Air Force pilot more commonly known across the galaxy as Captain Marvel, glowed brightly with cosmic energy as she guided the groaning spacecraft to the ground.
“She did it,” Rocket quietly remarked, and there was a hint of fear in his voice. “The glowing chick found ‘em.”
The spacecraft’s steps descended and Pepper stifled a sob in her hands when Tony appeared at the top; a blue-skinned woman was helping the weakened billionaire down the stairs and when he showed signs of unsteadiness, Steve let go of her hand and ran across the lawn to help. (Y/N) watched Pepper and Rhodes share an emotional hug before hurrying to greet Tony, but the small smile she’d managed to muster at their reunion disappeared when she saw that no one else was onboard; at least Rocket isn’t entirely alone, she thought to herself, the hollow feeling in her chest growing as she watched Rocket sit down on the spacecraft’s steps beside the blue-skinned woman and wordlessly take her hand. But the others were gone, either Vanished or murdered by Thanos; the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Peter Parker…
A familiar hand on her shoulder pulled her out of her silent rumination and Natasha smiled a little when she turned. “Tony’s here, alive and safe. He’ll know where we can find Thanos.” The spy gave her shoulder a comforting squeeze just as Carol walked up to them. “Good work, Danvers.”
“We’re lucky I found ‘em when I did; another few hours out there and your friend would’ve been gone.” (Y/N) shuddered and the captain gave them an apologetic look before continuing. “Their food and water ran out two weeks ago and their ship was dead in the water. Whatever happened out there with Thanos…it wasn’t good.”
(Y/N) nodded, watching the others escort Tony inside as she twirled her engagement ring around her finger. “No, but Nat’s right; if there’s even a sliver of a chance of fixing all this, then we need anything that Tony can give us on that bastard.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Despite what she’d said to Natasha and Carol on the lawn of the Avengers Facility, (Y/N)’s confidence in Tony’s ability to aid them in their search for Thanos all but disappeared by the next morning. Bruce patched up the billionaire’s many battle wounds and inserted an I.V. into his arm to replenish the nutrients he’d lost after so many days without food or water, but Tony appeared almost detached throughout the entire process; he insisted on being briefed as soon as possible, so they reluctantly wheeled him into the common room and worriedly watched him twirl his spoon around his soggy cereal while they booted up the holograms of all their ongoing research. He looks like he’s been through hell, (Y/N) thought as she shared a look of concern with Steve and leaned against the table beside him while Rhodes started speaking.
“It’s been twenty-three days since Thanos came to Earth…”
(Y/N)’s jaw clenched as she averted her eyes from the holograms displaying all the faces of the friends and allies they’d lost; Sam, Wanda, Vision, Bucky, T’Challa, Shuri, Scott Lang, Maria Hill, Nick Fury, Laura Barton and all three Barton children, Sharon Carter, Peter Parker, Stephen Strange, Erik Selving, Jane Foster, Hank Pym, Hope Van Dyne…she wasn’t sure which was worse, being forced to see their faces every single day since they’d gone or not having a picture of her own daughter to display as one of Thanos’ countless victims. The others weren’t immune from the emotional impact of the holograms; Steve crossed his arms tighter across his chest and pointedly looked down, Carol blinked away her tears as Nick Fury’s image faded away and Natasha cleared her throat right before Yelena Belova’s image appeared, still unwilling to accept the news of her younger sister’s loss.
“World governments are in pieces. The parts that are still working are trying to take a census, and it looks like he did…” Natasha paused for a moment to compose herself while Tony looked away from Peter Parker’s school I.D. photograph. “He did exactly what he said he was gonna do. Thanos wiped out fifty percent of all living creatures.”
The silence of the room was finally broken by Tony. “Where is he now? Where?”
“We don’t know,” Steve replied, the forced calmness of his voice wavering when he glanced up at Tony. “He just opened a portal and walked through.”
The billionaire moved to adjust his wheelchair and caught sight of Thor, who was seated alone outside in the courtyard. “And what’s wrong with him?”
“Well, he’s pissed. He thinks he failed.” Rocket’s empty gaze met all theirs and he shrugged. “Which, of course, he did, but you know, there’s a lot of that goin’ around, ain’t there?”
“Honestly, until this exact second I thought you were a Build-A-Bear.”
“Maybe I am.”
Under very different circumstances, (Y/N) would’ve smiled at Tony and Rocket’s exchange, thrilled that the two like-minded geniuses were somehow able to meet one another. But there was only one thing that she cared to focus on, and that was making Thanos pay for what he’d done. “We’ve been hunting Thanos for three weeks – deep space scans, satellites – and we’ve got nothing. Tony, I know that you’ve been through a lot but you fought him-”
“Who told you that?” (Y/N) kept her irritation in check at Tony’s blunt interruption. “I didn’t fight him. No, he wiped my face with a planet while the Bleeker Street magician gave away the store. That’s what happened; there was no fight because he’s not beatable-”
“Okay…” Steve cut through the billionaire’s incoherent rambling, his struggle to maintain his patience evident in the way his fingers dug into the edge of the tabletop behind him. “Did he give you any clues? Any coordinates, anything?”
Tony snorted and flailed his hand in indifference, causing Steve’s grip on the tabletop to tighten in frustration as (Y/N) exchanged a knowing look with Natasha. “I saw this coming a few years back. I had a vision, I didn’t wanna believe it…thought I was dreaming.”
The super-soldier pushed himself the table and took a step forward; (Y/N) anxiously bit her lip when she noticed the divots hed left in the wood and she felt the tension in the common room grow. “Tony, I’m gonna need you to focus-”
“And I needed you.” The billionaire’s quiet but accusatory words echoed throughout the room and (Y/N) felt herself tense up. “As in past tense. That trumps what you need; it’s too late, buddy. Sorry. You know what I need? I need to shave.” He knocked the bowl of cereal over and it clattered against the table as he stood, making all of them flinch at the harsh sound; ignoring Rhodes protests and attempts to stop him, Tony ripped the I.V. out of his arm and continued addressing the room. “And I believe I remember telling all of you, alive or otherwise, that we needed a suit of armor around the world! Remember that? Whether it impacted our precious freedoms or not, that’s what we needed.”
“Well, that didn’t work out, did it?”
(Y/N) stepped forward and rested a hand on her fiancé’s bicep. “Steve, he’s not well…”
“Nah, I’ve really never felt better, Austen. You remember that day, don’t you? You remember what happened after Ultron, right?” Tony demanded and after she slowly nodded, he turned his attention back to Steve. “I said we’d lose. You said we’d ‘do that together, too.’ But guess what, Cap? We lost, and you weren’t there.” Steve’s muscles flexed beneath her hand but he remained silent, watching with regret in his azure eyes while Rhodes unsuccessfully tried guiding Tony back into his wheelchair. “But that’s what we do, right? Our best work after the fact? We’re the A-vengers, not the Pre-vengers, right?”
“Okay, you made your point, just sit down-”
“Okay, okay,” Tony ignored his best friend’s pleas and pointed at Carol. “She’s great, by the way. We need you, you’re new blood and we’re a bunch of tired old mules!” Pushing past Rhodes, Tony walked right up to Steve and sneered. “I’ve got nothing for you, Cap, I’ve got no coordinates, no clues, no strategies, no options. Zero, zip, nada. No trust. Liar.” He ripped the arc reactor off his emaciated chest and thrust it into Steve’s hand. “Here, take this. You find him, you put that on, you take your family and hide…” He suddenly dropped to his knees and raised a shaking hand as everyone hurried to his aid. “I-I’m fine, I’m fine…”
The billionaire collapsed onto the ground and the others sprang into action; Natasha ran out of the common room to alert Bruce and Pepper of Tony’s condition while Rhodes scooped his best friend up off the ground and Carol helped them to the infirmary. (Y/N)’s gaze met Thor’s as he watched the others scramble to help Tony from his seat in the courtyard, but he quickly averted his eyes and stared down at his clasped hands. Swallowing the lump in her throat, (Y/N) turned away from the window to face Steve; the super-soldier stood rigid as he stared at the spot where Tony fell, his soldier’s composure beginning to falter as his fingers clamped around the arc reactor.
Although (Y/N) still believed that Steve made the right decision when he rejected the Sokovia Accords and went on the run, she knew that everything that transpired in Siberia between him and Tony could’ve been prevented if he’d just been honest with his friend; Tony spent the better part of two years caught between the pain of learning that Steve betrayed his trust and the hope that his friend would someday reach out to him, only for the pain to fester and the hope to slowly dissipate over time. It was a dressing-down that Steve undoubtedly earned through the choices he’d made, but hearing how those choices were the reason why they’d lost everything to Thanos wasn’t what the super-soldier needed to hear. Not after losing our Carina, (Y/N) thought as she took a steadying breath, cautiously stepping forward and allowing a tearful Steve to pull her into a tight embrace.

“Bruce gave him a sedative,” Rhodes announced to the four of them after stepping out of the infirmary; inside, Tony slept in a hospital bed while Pepper and Bruce shared a hushed conversation at his bedside. “He’s gonna probably be out the rest of the day.”
(Y/N) opened her mouth to ask the others what their next step would be but was interrupted by Carol. “You guys take care of him, and I’ll bring him a bottle of Xorrian elixir when I get back.”
The captain began heading back to the common room and (Y/N)’s brow furrowed in confusion. “Carol, where are you going?”
“To kill Thanos.”
Exchanging matching looks of apprehension, the three of them hurried after Natasha as she caught up with the older woman first. “Hey. You know, we usually work as a team here and between you and me, morale’s a little fragile.”
“We realize that up there’s more your territory,” Steve added. “But this is our fight, too.”
Carol sighed. “Look, you guys did an incredible job and that’s more than what countless planets across the galaxy can say; they’re the ones that Thanos decimated without breaking a sweat, the ones that were the first to suffer by his hand and the ones that I failed to protect. I owe it to them to put an end to Thanos once and for all.”
“And we owe it to our daughter to do whatever it takes to bring her back.” (Y/N)’s voice caught in her throat and an empathetic look crossed the captain’s face. “I don’t even know if that’s possible or not, but the only way we’re going to find out is if we all go after Thanos together.”
Rhodes nodded in agreement from his spot near the doorway. “Do you even know where he is?”
“I know people who might-”
“Don’t bother.” They all looked over at Nebula, the blue-skinned woman who’d gotten off the Benatar alongside Tony and one of the Guardians of the Galaxy; her raspy voice was filled with a heavy emotion as she stepped into the common room. “I can tell you where Thanos is.”
While Natasha left to fetch Bruce and Thor, Rocket switched on the hologram devices and began to input new data and Steve guided (Y/N) off to the side for a moment alone. “Do you really think that there’s a way to bring Carina back? To bring everyone we lost back?”
“Steve, you saw everything that those stones could do; if they could make half the universe disappear in the blink of an eye, then there’s no reason not to believe that they could bring them back.” She wrapped her arms around herself as she looked into Steve’s azure eyes. “But we won’t know unless we try.”
Nodding, Steve’s hand cupped her cheek as he pressed a soft kiss onto her forehead. “And we will, sunshine. Whatever it takes.”
They pulled away from one another as the others filed into the common room; Thor carried his bowl of food over to the dining room table and began picking at it while they turned their attention to Nebula. “Thanos spent a long time trying to…perfect me. When he worked, he talked. About his Great Plan. Even disassembled, I wanted to please him.” Nebula shifted uncomfortably and (Y/N) felt a pang of sympathy, unable to imagine what the warrior’s life had been like under the Mad Titan. “I’d ask, where would we go once his plan was complete? His answer was always the same: ‘To the Garden.’”
Rhodes’ brow rose in surprise. “You’re saying Thanos had a retirement plan?”
“Where is he?”
Standing on the table they encircled, Rocket pressed a button and brought up a holo-map of Earth that showed the planet being engulfed in a wave of energy. “When Thanos snapped his fingers, Earth became Gound Zero for a power surge of ridiculously-cosmic proportions. No one’s seen anything like it…” He shifted the map around to show an orange-colored planet as an identical wave of energy encompassed it. “Until two days ago, on this planet.”
“He used the stones again…” Natasha murmured as she leaned in to take a closer look at the holo-map.
“Hey, hey, hey, we’d be going in shorthanded, you know…”
“And he’s still got the stones…”
“So, let’s get ‘em.” Carol glanced over at (Y/N) with a glimmer of hope in her eyes. “We’ll use them to get everyone back.”
Bruce looked unconvinced. “Just like that?”
“Yeah.” Steve nodded. “Just like that.”
“It’s like (Y/N) said, even if there’s a small chance that we can undo this, we owe it to everyone who’s not in this room to try.”
Natasha’s words resonated throughout the entire room, and (Y/N) glanced around to gage her friends’ reactions; Steve, Natasha and Carol looked the most on-board with their fledgling plan, Rocket and Nebula seemed more cautious but ultimately agreeable, and both Bruce and Rhodes’ expressions were filled with apprehension, with the scientist looking slightly worried as he addressed the room. “If we do this, how do we know it’s gonna end any differently than it did before?”
Across the room, Carol gave them a small smile. “Because before you didn’t have me.”
(Y/N) exchanged a knowing look with Natasha while Rhodes heaved a sigh. “Hey, new girl? Everybody in here’s about that superhero life; where’ve you been all this time?”
“There’s a lot of people in the universe, and they didn’t all have you.”
Thor’s chair scraped against the floor as he stood and crossed the common room to stand before Carol; the stoic Asgardian held his hand out and Stormbreaker blew past the captain, ruffling her blonde hair as it swiftly flew into his grasp. When Carol didn’t flinch and even gave him the barest hint of a smile while they sized one another up, Thor looked over at the rest of them and nodded. “I like this one.”
(Y/N) turned to Steve, who was still studying the rotating orange planet at the center of Rocket’s holo-map. After a long, deciding moment, the super-soldier looked up at her with a fierce determination simmering in his azure eyes and she found herself beginning to smile as he finally spoke. “Let’s go get this son of a bitch.”

You get to the 6th level of the parking garage at the Leipzig/Halle airport and Steve parks next to a van and you all get out.
Steve gets closer to the van, followed by Sam while you stay behind with Bucky, both of you leaning on the car as you stand on the passenger’s side to be able to see over the car because you’re just that short.
You hear a little snicker from Bucky and look at him with your eyes narrowed as he seems amused by the sight but doesn’t say anything. Your attention goes back to the van as Clint loudly opens the side door.
“What timezone is this?” Scott asks, clearly disoriented as he gets out.
“Come on.” Clint encourages him and pushes him slightly towards Steve. “Come on.”
Scott walks to Steve and shakes his hand with an amazed look. “Captain America.”
“Mr. Lang.” Steve politely says as he shakes his hand.
“It’s an honor.” He says in awe. “I’m shaking your hand too long.” You try your best not to laugh as Scott fangirls over Steve.
“Wow! This is awesome!” He turns and sees Wanda and, in the same cheery voice, says “I know you, too. You’re great!”
Then he turns back to Steve and feels his shoulders saying “Jeez.” and you can’t help but giggle, seeing the scene and everybody’s reactions that go from amused to confused while Scott continues talking.
“Ah, look, I wanna say, I know you know a lot of super people, so… thinks for thanking of me” He says and you giggle more while looking at Bucky to make sure you heard right and his face is as confused as you feel. You turn back to Scott as he says, “Hey, man!”
Sam tries to play it cool by saying “What’s up, Tic Tac?”
“Uh, good to see you.” Scott says, seeming a little confused at the nickname but deciding to blow past it. “Look, what happened last time when I-”
“It was a great audition, but it’ll…” Sam interrupts him, shaking his hand with a chuckle. “It’ll never happen again.”
“It was hilarious!” You comment somewhat loudly and everyone turns to you, Sam glaring while Scott giggles quietly as you wink at him and wave at Wanda and Clint.
“They tell you what we’re up against?” Steve brings everyone’s attention back on the matter at hand before you and Sam start bickering.
“Something about some… psycho-assassins?” Scott says innocently and you keep in your laugh, hoping Bucky is not offended by Scott’s description of the Winter Soldiers.
“We're outside the law on this one. So, if you come with us, you're a wanted man.” Steve warns him.
“Yeah, well, what else is new?” Scott says casually and you grin. Dude is pretty cool.
“We should get moving.” Bucky says.
“We got a chopper lined up.” Clint says to the group, just as the PA starts announcing something in German, which you fortunately understand.
“Dies ist eine Notsituation." You frown. Emergency? “Alle Passagiere müssen den Flughafen sofort evakuieren.”
You’re about to translate when Bucky beats you to it. “They're evacuating the airport.”
“Stark.” Sam says and you roll your eyes. Yeah, that makes sense, that dramatic diva.
“Stark?” Scott echoes, sounding surprised and not in a good way.
“Suit up.” Steve says in his Captain voice and you know better than to disobey.
-
Steve is in his uniform now as he strides through an underpass, then jogs onto a private runway, heading for the chopper when an electro-disabler slams onto the chopper and Steve looks up.
Tony and Rhodey, both in their Iron Man and War Machine suits, descend and land in front of Steve.
You’re in the terminal with Bucky and Sam as the latter scans the airport to find their Quinjet. You can’t really hear what the others are saying, but you can hear Steve through the earpiece.
“Hear me out, Tony.” Steve tries to reason. “That doctor, the psychiatrist, he's behind all of this.”
You see T’Challa leap over a truck and after a moment Steve says “Your highness.”
You can see Tony talking, you assume trying to get Steve to surrender, before you hear Steve again. “You're after the wrong guy.”
Tony says something else you assume to be about Bucky because of what Steve answers back. ”And there are five more super soldiers just like him. I can't let the doctor find them first, Tony. I can't.”
You can see Natasha talk next and then Tony makes a face and you know he’s done, then you can hear him yelling “Underoos!” through Steve’s earpiece.
Suddenly you see a guy in a red onesie swing in and shoot what looks like webs at Steve, stealing his shield and binding his hands before landing on top of a truck a little wobbly.
You furrow your eyebrows and look at Sam to your right but he’s busy with Redwing so you look at Bucky next to him and he looks just as confused as you do. He meets your eyes and raises an eyebrow in question but you simply shrug and look back at the scene when you hear Steve say. “You've been busy.”
Tony tries his hardest to reason with Steve while, as planned, the Captain patiently listens to him while Sam looks for their Quinjet. “You did that when you signed.” He answers calmly at whatever Tony said.
You can see Tony pleading with Steve, and you almost feel bad but are snapped out of it when Sam finally talks. “We found it. Their Quinjet’s in hangar five, north runway.”
You see Steve raise his arms and one of Clint’s arrows flies through the air and breaks the webs on Steve’s hands, freeing him. “Alright, Lang.” Steve says and Scott enlarges, taking the shield from the guy with the red pajamas with a flip and giving it back to Steve.
“I believe this is yours, Captain America.” Scott says and you chuckle. Dude has a serious man crush.
The two men next to you look confused at what is so amusing, and you merely roll your eyes and say “come on.” as the three of you start running.
As you’re going through the terminal, you see the Spider-man dude stick to the glass outside and all three of your attention goes to him.
“What the hell is that?” Bucky asks as you run.
“Everyone’s got a gimmick now.” Sam sounds really annoyed and obviously you have to tease him.
“That’s a person, not a metal bird, Wilson!” You say.
“Don’t bring Redwing into this!” He yells back, glaring at you as he runs.
“You brought Redwing into this!” You snark back and, before Sam can say anything, Spiderman breaks through the glass towards the three of you, Sam tries to protect you and that causes you both to go crashing into the wall.
You can see Bucky throwing a punch but Spiderman catches his fist easily, shocking all three of us while shouting “You have a metal arm?! That is awesome, dude!”
Sam goes flying into Spiderman and takes him away, while you approach Bucky.
“Did that sound like a kid to you?” you ask him, still looking after Sam and Spiderman.
“Doesn’t matter. Let’s go.” He says starting to go after the other two.
“Matters a little…” You mumble while following Bucky.
You can hear Wanda and Clint talking through the comms, to Tony you assume when Wanda says “You locked me in my room.” and then you hear Clint say “made you look.” just as you see through the window all the cars flying down thanks to Wanda’s magic.
Spiderman wings through the rafters in the terminal, chasing Sam who flies backwards firing shots. Spiderman stops on a high beam and just then Bucky throws a giant piece of metal at him.
You can hear Spiderman yell back “Hey buddy, I think you lost this!” before throwing back the piece of metal, causing Bucky to cover you with his metal arm while it flies back, thankfully missing you both.
Sam takes the opportunity to kick Spiderman and try to bring him down, but Spiderman swings again and webs Sam’s wings, which sends him crashing to the floor. As he gets up, Spiderman webs his hands to the railing behind him and then sticks to a column and starts nerding out about Sam’s wings as you run to help Sam, Bucky right behind you.
You’re too focused on Sam to notice Spiderman swinging towards him at the same time that you get to him, luckily Bucky wraps his arms around you as all three of you crush into the railing and down to the floor on the level below.
As you all land Spiderman quickly webs Sam’s arms together, Bucky’s metal arm to the floor and then your arms, sticking you to Bucky since he was still holding you with one arm as you basically landed on him.
While Spiderman talks over you, you can faintly hear Sam messing around with his gear and you hope he’s doing something useful. Just as Spiderman is about to shoot webs again, Redwing attaches to his wrist and drags him off.
After a beat of silence Bucky says “You couldn’t have done that earlier?” to which Sam answers “I hate you.” and you roll your eyes and say “God, you two are children.”
You do your best to grab your pocket knife and, after a moment of struggling, you succeed then cut the webs off of you and Bucky with a little difficulty. You get up and cut the webs off of Bucky’s metal arm before going to Sam and helping him out of the webs too.
Your heads all snap to the window when you hear the sound of an explosion and can see it just as you hear Scott through the comms saying “Oh, man. I thought it was a water truck. Uh… sorry.”
You frown and turn to Sam and Bucky. “That can’t be good. Let’s go.” The three of you run out of the terminal as fast as you can and when you get outside you meet up with Steve, Scott, Clint and Wanda, all of you running towards the Quinjet.
“Come on!” Steve yells, but your run is interrupted when suddenly a yellow laser makes a line in front of you and you’re all stopped in your tracks. A fucking laser. You look up and see Vision hovering over you.
“Captain Rogers. I know you believe what you're doing is right.” He starts while the rest of Tony’s team gathers around him. Tony flies in while holding Natasha, Rhoday flies T’Challa and Spiderman swings down with one of Dora Milaje, T’Challa’s personal guards, that you saw at the FBI bunker and you think her name is Ayo. “But for the collective good you must surrender now.” Vision finishes talking and there is a moment of silence where you all just look at the opponent directly in front of you, which in your case is Ayo.
“What do we do, Cap?” Sam asks.
“We fight.” Is all Steve says and you hesitate for a second looking at him and then at Ayo.
“Anybody wants to switch?” You ask while looking at your teammates, some look amused but Steve kind of glares at you. “No? Alrighty, then.” You look back ahead as you all start walking, then jogging faster and faster until you’re full on running towards the opposite team.
Tony, Rhodey, Sam, Wanda and Vision take flight and then the first sound that can be heard is Tony’s fist meeting Steve’s shield.
Clint shoots an arrow at Vision that dodges it, Sam bumps into Rhodey mid-air, Scott shrinks and jumps on Natasha, Wanda shoots her magic at Peter while he shoots webs at her and T’Challa straight up jumps onto Bucky.
You lose track of what everyone else is doing once you come face to face with Ayo, who loses no time hitting you with her spear but you luckily dodge it, throwing a punch of your own that she easily avoids. The only thing you can tell is that Nat and Clint are near you fighting, and so are Bucky and T’Challa.
You take out your extendable baton, glad that Clint suggested it, and try to hit Ayo repeatedly, but you miss everytime. You’re getting frustrated when you finally land a hit to her cheek and grin, but you quickly regret it when she kicks you hard on the ribs, sending you flying back.
Ayo jumps on you and raises her spear right over your face, but before she can hit you Wanda sends her flying back far away from you.
You don’t have time to thank her when she’s throwing Natasha off of Clint and into a metal container.
“Geez, Wanda, go easy on them.” You tell her and she gives you a pointed look, before looking at Clint and saying “You were pulling your punches” before walking away.
You and Clint exchange a look but you get distracted by T’Challa throwing Bucky into a container near you. You get into action right away and just as T’Challa is about to claw at Bucky, you push the supersoldier out of the way and you both go stumbling to the side while Wanda throws T’Challa into a big metal container far away from you.
You and Bucky roll a little and, when you stop, you end on top of him. He looks up at you and whispers “Thank you.”
“Anytime, Soldier.” You wink at him and get up, helping him up too. Wanda joins you with an amused look on her face.
“Still think we should go easy on them?” She asks smugly, and you merely roll your eyes.
You’re thankfully distracted by Spiderman knocking Steve off his feet but when you go to help him, you’re intercepted by Natasha.
As you start doing hand-to-hand combat with her, you can hear Scott calling Clint “Arrow Guy” and you almost chuckle, but don’t let it distract you because you know Natasha could seriously hurt you, although it seems like she’s going as easy on you as you are on her.
“Nothing’s changed between us, right Tasha?” You ask, concerned about your friendship as you keep fighting, though it almost feels like any other sparring match you’ve ever had.
She laughs and nods. “Nothing, Y/N/N”.
You grin at the nickname and say “Good” before kicking her a little harder than you’ve ever had and sending her flying back, then you run to Steve and get to him as he points at himself and says. “Brooklyn.”
You frown at him and then look at Spiderman with one of those giant metal walkways people use to get to the planes and your eyes widen.
“That seems a little excessive.” You say, looking back at Steve.
“He’ll be fine.” Steve says shortly and starts jogging away, signaling to you to follow him, which you reluctantly do.
You and Steve are running when you hear Scott say “Uh-oh” through the comms and you frown. “Are you okay, Scott?”
You can hear him panting freaking out, saying “Oh boy. Whoa!”
You and Steve are joined by Bucky as you’re hiding behind some containers and you’re about to ask Scott if he’s okay again when Bucky talks and you turn to him. “We gotta go. That guy's probably in Siberia by now.” You can't help but think how fucking blue his eyes are.
“We gotta draw out the flyers.” Steve says, snapping you out of it and you make up your mind.
“I'll take Vision.” You tell him “You two get to the jet.”
You know Steve’s about to argue when Sam cuts in “No, you get to the jet! All three of you!” He says through the comms. “The rest of us aren't getting out of here.”
“As much as I hate to admit it, if we're gonna win this one, some of us might have to lose it.” Clint chimes in.
You and Steve look at each other and it’s like Sam can sense your hesitation as he says “This isn't the real fight, guys.”
“Alright, Sam, what's the play?” Steve says, his eyes darting between you and Bucky.
“We need a diversion, something big.” he says and you try to think about what you could do.
“I got something kind of big, but I can't hold it very long.” Scott offers “On my signal, run like hell. And if I tear myself in half… don't come back for me.”
You frown and look at Steve and Bucky who seem just as confused as you do. “He's gonna tear himself in half?” Bucky asks.
“You're sure about this, Scott?” Steve asks into his comm.
“I do it all the time. I mean once… in a lab. Then I passed out.” He tries and fails to reassure you.
“That doesn’t make me feel better, like at all.” You say looking from Bucky to Steve, who seem to agree.
You can hear Scott mumbling “I'm the boss. I'm the boss. I'm the boss. I'm the boss. I'm the BOSS!” to himself and then suddenly he grows into a fucking giant of 60-65 feet.
“Jesus fucking Christ.” You say almost in shock.
“I guess that's the signal.” Steve says and starts running towards the jet, you and Bucky following closely.
You can hear Sam saying “Way to go, Tic Tac!” as you run, going past Scott, who stops T’Challa from following you by kicking a bus into him, then Rhodey almost gets to you, but he’s stopped by Wanda.
The three of you are getting closer to the jet when a tower starts falling over the entrance, courtesy of Vision, but Wanda keeps it up with her magic for you.
As you pick up your pace and approach it, you’re stopped by a spear landing right in front of Bucky, missing his foot by a centimeter.
Ayo is about to jump on Bucky but before either him or Steve can do anything to stop her, you throw yourself on her, sending her stumbling back and to the ground, enough distance between you that you have the opportunity to look behind you at Bucky, Steve just behind him with a look that’s both impressed and shocked at your reflexes.
“I got this. Go.” You tell the two men even though your eyes are fixated on Bucky.
“Are you sure?” he asks you with a hint of worry and you grin.
“It’s nothing I can’t handle, Sergeant.” Steve smirks and nods, moving towards the jet again, but Bucky hesitates. You know Wanda won’t be able to keep the path clear forever so you try to reassure him.
“Go, I’ll be fine. Go!” You yell the last word, which seems to snap him out of it and he turns around with a nod, running at full speed towards the Quinjet.
You turn around just in time to see Ayo running towards you, but this time you’re not fast enough and she sends you falling back. You quickly get up and do your best to keep her occupied while the tower that Wanda was keeping up falls to the ground.
Or, more accurately, you're taking her punches while landing little to none yourself.
Ayo gets distracted for a second when she sees Natasha stunning T’Challa and that’s enough to give you the opportunity to take the upper hand and take her down. Unfortunately you don’t notice how close the two of you are to her spear but then again neither does she.
You see Giant Scott get taken down and, while still holding Ayo down as best as you can, you say worriedly through your comm “Scott? Scott, talk to me, are you okay?” There's a pause while you hold your breath and then he says “Does anyone have any orange slices?” And you let out a breathy laugh, both amused and impressed by his resilience.
In the time it took you to check on Scott, Ayo managed to get a hold of her spear, almost driving it through your arm. Thankfully she misses, though it still leaves a pretty deep cut.
Your eyes widen and as you get off of her she wastes no time to go help T’Challa. You lay down on the ground while holding your arm where the cut is and can see the Quinjet taking off so you let out a relieved sigh.
You sit up and, when you see Vision going to Wanda, you smile and get up to gocheck on Scott.
“You alright, big guy?” You ask him as you approach him with a little bit of a limp and he nods chuckling.
“I am. Are you alright? “ He eyes your arm and you nod. “I’m fine.”
Clint approaches you and wraps an arm around you to help you stay up, knowing you’re not gonna ask for help but he can clearly see by your quickly paling face that you need it.
You look towards the Quinjet and your eyes widen when you see Rhodey quickly falling down, Tony and Sam both diving to help him. “Shit…”
You all watch in shock as he hits the ground, Tony lands right beside him and then Sam lands a little further away. You can hear Sam saying “I’m sorry.” right before Tony shoots him and he goes flying backwards.
“SAM!” You yell and try to start making your way to him even if he’s far, but Clint holds you back with his arm around your waist, Scott’s hand on your uninjured arm.
You hold your breath until you hear the faint “I’m okay” in your ear, followed by Sam’s grunts and you relax, mumbling “Thank fucking god…”
You look around the airport, all the destruction and the people you still love despite it all.
Steve and Bucky made it out of here, so you won. At what cost though?
You can just hope this was all worth it.

Tony: I think it would be healthy for you to get a sense of closure. Look at Steve and me. We slept together, we talked about it, we're still friends.
Rhodey: You slept with Rogers?
Tony: ...No!

To say you were panicking would be the understatement of the century. You’d done it. You’d finally dumped your piece of shit boyfriend ex-boyfriend. But now, reality had set in. And with reality came… that panic. It wasn’t a well thought out plan to begin with, but you knew you couldn’t stay in the relationship any longer. Especially after the events from the past week, you knew you had to leave.
Things hadn’t gone exactly as you’d expected them to though, and that was where you were unsure of what to do.
When you told John that you were breaking up with him, he just laughed. Then after a few seconds, he got angry.
Shoving you up against a wall, he leaned in so your faces were only inches apart.
“You’re nothing without me,” he sneered, “you’re not going anywhere.”
“You don’t get to—”
As you tried to stand up for yourself, he simply laughed. Though there was no humor in his tone. “I don’t think so. You’re too pathetic to leave. Now clean this fucking place up.”
After that, he’d gone back into the bedroom, got dressed for work, then stormed out of the apartment without another word.
Forcing those moments from your mind, you begin pacing around. And after less than a minute, you begin to overthink. You knew what John expected to happen. Since he’d ‘put you in your place’, he assumed that you’d just do what you normally did at home. And since he’d be gone for a couple of days for a business trip, he’d expect the place to be spotless and for dinner to be on the table whenever he did get home.
10 minutes later, you remained in the same spot, sat on the couch with your knees pulled up towards your chest.
“Guess I should get packing,” you finally mumbled to yourself. Brushing the nonexistent dust from your pants, you made your way to the bedroom and pulled a suitcase out from under the bed. As you mindlessly folded clothes and began arranging them inside, you think back on your relationship with John Walker.
In the beginning, he had you believing that he was genuinely a good guy, and that he loved you. He always said exactly the right things, and in that honeymoon stage, you never argued. He was sweet, planned the most romantic dates, basically, he swept you off your feet.
Just 6 months into the relationship, you made the mistake of saying yes when he asked you to move with him to California. His job offered him the chance to relocate for much higher pay, and he instantly accepted. It made you sad that he hadn’t even thought to mention it to you until it was already a done deal, but you brightened up when he asked you to go with him. He filled your head with how great it would be and all of the adventures you guys would get to have. You were so smitten, you hadn’t even considered saying no.
Yelena, Steve, Sam, Wanda, and Kate all warned you against the idea. Some said that 6 months was waaay too soon, while others said just stay in New York and try long distance.
Even with all of them, none were more against the idea than your best friend.
Pietro had quickly come to think of you as a sister since you met when you were kids, and if asked, he’d say you were one of his favorite people without hesitation. Though you often bickered like siblings, the love was clear.
The one area where you and Pietro disagreed, was your relationship with John. From the beginning, Pietro was the first to think that something was off. Maybe it was the way that John seemed just a little too controlling, but then he’d see the way your eyes lit up whenever you talked about him. And he loved you, so whatever you’d decided, he said you’d have his full support if you ever needed anyone.
The first major red flag was that John not only insisted that you both fly to California, but that he also completely disregarded your fear of planes. But you brushed all of those concerns aside, telling yourself that he must just be so excited to get to California and start that new chapter of your life together.
Once there, John slowly began to change. Within a month, you barely recognized the man you lived with. He’d talk down to you, insulting you while constantly reminding you that you were absolutely nothing without him. It was only the 2 of you, and you’d better not fuck things up or you’ll have nowhere to go and no one to turn to out there.
Around everyone else, and whenever you were on the phone with friends, he was still the caring man that you first fell for. He put on a good show when others were watching or listening. It was those moments that you clung to. It was why you convinced yourself to stay, because you hoped that he’d turn back into the man you once loved.
Finally, after 6 months in California, and right around your 1 year dating anniversary, you reached your breaking point. After an incident that you now couldn’t even begin to think about, you knew you couldn’t keep living like this. You knew that if you did, you might not be alive much longer.
But what were your options? John was right, out in California you only had him. And though you suspected that your friends never really liked John, you’d done your best to hide his true colors, and you felt scared to tell them everything, including Pietro.
“Fuck,” you wiped away a tear. You hadn’t even realized that you’d been crying.
As if able to sense that you needed someone (because he always seemed to know. You swore it was his superpower), your cell phone rang. You knew without looking that it was Pietro calling to check in. Everyone else mostly communicated through text. Well, Steve was a bit old fashioned and preferred calling over texting too, but he always text you first to make sure you weren’t busy.
“Hi,” you tried your best to put on a happy voice. “How’d the big meeting with Fury go?”
“What’s wrong?”
“— nothing. I just asked how your meeting went.”
Pietro sighed, and you could hear him shutting a door. Glancing at the time, you realized that he’d be at work right now. “Okay, now do you want to tell me the truth this time?”
That once sentence was pretty much all it took for you to finally let your tears fall. “I— I finally did it,” you whispered, laughing a little despite the severity of the situation. “I broke up with John. Or, I tried to anyway.”
“Tried to? Printesa, did he do something??”
You can’t help but smile at the old nickname. What started out as a cruel joke with Pietro calling you printesa (“princess” in Romanian) because you were always used to getting your way as a child, turned into a term of endearment over the years. You bit your lip as you contemplated telling him everything that was really going on. He has always had a temper when it came to anyone messing with you.
Once in high school, a boy lied about a date and said that he'd taken your virginity that night, when in fact all you’d done was kiss once. He showed up at school 2 days later with his arm in a sling, and he'd walked up to you, mumbling an apology before practically running in the opposite direction.
It was no secret who'd done that to him. It was no secret, because Pietro admitted it, saying the guy only got what he deserved.
"N—not physically," you decided you’d tell him that it was a lie much later, once you were back in New York. "I just couldn't take it anymore. He's at work now and I'm trying to pack up my shit but it's hard because I don't even know what to take. I left behind so much in New York and I honestly can't remember what I bought, and what was bought with John's money."
"I'm gonna kill that motherfu—"
"Pietro, no, please. You don't ever need to do something like that for me. I'll be okay, I just... I have to figure out what to do with all of this stuff and then I'll find a way back to New York."
Pietro is suddenly pissed that he flew to Tokyo to take a meeting with Nick Fury. Despite your protests, he says that he’s cancelling the meeting with him tomorrow and coming straight home.
After nearly 5 minutes of convincing, he finally agrees to not cancel anything, but says that as soon as you’re back in New York he’s coming home to see you.
Once you’re sure he isn’t going to drop everything to help you, he quickly runs through the list of your friends, seeing who might be able to come and help you. Nat and Yelena are in Russia visiting their dad, and you have to beg him not to tell them just yet. Wanda and Vision are out of the question because Wanda is nearing her due date, and shouldn’t be by herself for more than a day when the twins could come at any moment.
Peter is an option, but you shut that down. Despite only being a few years younger and now obviously an adult, you still think of the shy awkward teenager that he was when you first met.
There were the other 2 Peter’s in California, who also oddly had the same last name as your Peter. You’d met the second one when out for groceries one day, and so you jokingly referred to him as Peter #2. And one day while John was thankfully out (because he would’ve freaked), the man you dubbed Peter #3 entered your apartment. He was so focused on his book that he entered the wrong apartment. His was next door, and he also often kept his door unlocked.
Despite Peter #3 seeming like the best option, you still said no. You didn’t know him all that well, and couldn’t drag him into your mess when after it was all done, he’d still be living across from John. If Peter helped you and John ever found out, you didn’t even want to think about what he’d do.
“I could call To—”
“No. He wouldn’t want to hear from me anyway. And I’ll be okay, I promise. I already feel so much better after venting and confirming that this is the right decision. I’ll find a way back to New York. Maybe rent an SUV since I don’t have enough stuff to fill a moving truck and—”
“Hey, you know this is a different situation. If he knew— okay, look, do you trust me?”
“You know I do,” you respond without hesitation.
Pietro pauses for a moment before speaking again. “I’ll call you back in a few minutes. I’m going to make some arrangements, and no I won’t tell you what they are just yet. But trust me, this will get you out of there as fast as possible. Okay?”
You close your eyes for a few seconds, “okay”.
After reassuring you that everything will be okay in the end, Pietro hangs up after telling you he’s going to make a phone call, then call you back as soon as everything is set up.
Not wanting to just sit around and wait for his call, you decide to pack the rest of your things. It doesn’t take very long, because you meant it when you said that most of your belongings were probably bought by John, and you really couldn’t remember anyway.
Not wanting to give John another reason to hunt you down when he discovers you’ve really left, in the end, most things are left behind.
2 packed suitcases and a hot shower later, you finally begin to calm down. Most of the fear and nerves are still there, but you feel just a little bit better than you did when John first stormed out.
Realizing your exhaustion is causing your mood to worsen, you decide on a quick nap. But also realizing that Pietro could call you back at any moment, you send a quick text saying you’ll be asleep, but you have your phone on loud under your pillow so he can call you if anything happens.
That quick nap turned out to be longer than planned, because it’s over 2 hours later that you’re woken up to a series of loud, sharp knocks at the door. You instantly grow scared, but calm once you realize it can’t be John, because he’d never knock.
Rubbing your eyes in an attempt to feel more awake, you slowly make your way to the door. You look through the peephole, and your eyes widen in shock. When you open the door, you’re face to face with Tony Stark for the first time in over a year.
He remains silent, simply pulling you in for a hug. That gesture causes you to burst into tears all over again, and this time, not just because of everything happening with John.
Almost exactly a year ago, Steve and Tony had a big falling out, and your whole friend group was unwillingly dragged into it. You and Steve had always been close, so it came as a surprise to no one when you were on his side. But that didn’t stop Tony from lashing out and cutting contact with anyone who was “against him”, as he put it back then.
It only just now dawns on you that he must be Pietro’s plan, and it means the world that he’s there.
You hug him even tighter, trying to force yourself to stop crying. As you stutter your way through an apology, Tony rubs small circles on your back, telling you that you don’t have anything to be sorry for, and that you don’t have to talk about all of that right now.
“Do you — are you living in California now?”
Tony shakes his head, telling you that he’s still mainly in New York. “I’m just here on business. I was already on the jet back to New York when Pietro called, so I had the pilot turn around.”
“Alright motherfuckers, I’m ready to commit a crime and that crime is murder!” Rhodey barges in, looking around as he swings a sword.
“Where did you get that?!” You ask, unable to hide your surprise and confusion, and at the same time Tony asks if Rhodey really grabbed that from the trunk and that’s why he took so long.
When asked if he really had that just laying around in his trunk, Tony shrugs.
“Were you going to stab John with that?” You ask.
He looks down at the sword for a moment, as if genuinely thinking about it. “No. Just off with his head.” He does a slicing motion before gently setting the sword down.
“What, umm — what exactly did Pietro tell you?”
“Not much, understandably. But the gist of it is that John is going to be out of town for a couple of days so,” he glances down at his watch, “we gotta get this show on the road! How much do you have left to pack?”
You could feel the shame coming off of you in waves. “I… that’s everything,” you meekly point to your suitcases.
“Oh, well that’s okay!” Tony quickly recovers, “now we can just get out of here.”
“Umm, can you guys wait just a few minutes? There’s something I need to do first.” Once both men nod, you rush to John’s office, grabbing a small stack of papers, and begin to quickly write. After it’s done, you neatly stack the pages and go to the kitchen, using a magnet to stick them to the fridge. The first thing John always does when he gets home is have a beer, so you know he’ll see the letter right away.
[ the letter :
John,
I’m sorry. I’m too much of a coward to do this goodbye in person. I tried that, and you wouldn’t let me leave. Despite all that has happened, I still do have love for you. You helped me out of my shell, brought me to California and you showed me a love in the beginning that I never thought possible. Even back in New York, some of those moments with you were the happiest of my life. But part of me wishes that we never left New York. Things were perfect there. I fell for you the moment we first met. And for a while, everything was so good. But now you’re someone that I do not recognize. You’re no longer the kind, sweet man I once knew. Now when you look at me, all I feel is your anger. I am genuinely terrified of you. I can’t spend the rest of my life in fear that anything I say could piss you off. When you’re angry, I’m always sure you’re going to hit me again. I can’t keep living like this, looking at the man I was once in love with and then wondering what I did to make you become this monster. I will cherish the good memories we have, and I will always be grateful for them. But this has to be goodbye. I’ve left the phone, laptop, and anything else that you’ve purchased for me. I don’t want or expect anything. I just had to leave. Take care of yourself.
As Tony wheels a suitcase towards the SUV, Rhodey pauses before the 2 of you follow him.
“I know it might be hard to leave behind, but if you think there’s even a chance that he’ll track you, you should leave your phone and any other technology. I think to be safe—” he trails off, seeing that you’re already removing your laptop, phone, and AirPods from your backpack.
“That’s everything.”
Only a few minutes later, you’re all on the way to Tony and Pepper’s home thats there in California. You want to ask a million questions, but don’t even know where to begin, so you remain silent.
“You okay kid?”
You look up and make eye contact with Tony through the rearview mirror. “I’m just… I can’t believe this is happening. A year ago I would’ve never even thought about leaving John. Then six months ago when we moved and I started to see the sort of person he really is, I still didn’t think I’d ever be able to leave.”
Since being in the back seat, you don’t see Tony’s knuckles turn white from gripping the steering wheel so hard. He has half a mind to go find John right now and make sure that he doesn’t bother you, or anyone else ever again. But right now, he knows the priority is making sure you feel and stay safe, so he silently tells himself that he’ll make sure John is dealt with another time.
You finally allow yourself to feel calm, for the first time in a one time, once Tony uses a remote to open the gate that leads down his driveway. Just knowing John wouldn’t be able to get to you here makes it a little bit better.
Once they’re parked and Tony and Rhodey have exited the vehicle, you follow, and find yourself in awe as you look around the property. The last time you were here, before any arguments happened, Tony had yet to start any sort of transformation, and the place looks entirely different now.
“Now bad huh?” Tony turns to face you and spreads his arms out, as if to say ‘look at all of this’.
“Tony, thank you,” you’re relieved when the tears don’t start again. “I don’t know now how I can ever repay you for—”
Tony shakes his head, saying you don’t need to thank him, and this is the least he can do. “We didn’t speak for about a year because I was so stubborn that I couldn’t see you were only doing what you thought was right. I should’ve never expected anyone to just take sides. Rogers and I talked, and we both had no right to expect that from any of you, and also shouldn’t have gotten upset when people actually listened and did choose sides. You were dragged into our mess, and for that I’m sorry.”
You both end up talking for a while, Tony updating you on everything going on in his life, and you’re immensely grateful for the distraction.
“Now I know you’re worried about getting back to New York. But don’t worry, there’s no flying involved. Since I am my own boss, the two of us are going to take our time driving and by the time we’re back in New York, you’ll have forgotten all about he who I can’t name or I might actually throw up.”
As he opens his mouth to say something else, his phone rings. Despite sending it to voicemail, it immediately begins ringing again. “Sorry, I should probably take this incase it’s an emergency—” Once you reassure him that you’re okay, he steps out to take the call.
You do your best to not eavesdrop, but after a few moments you can’t help but hear Tony arguing with whoever he’s talking to. It’s not loud enough to hear specifics like what’s being said, but it’s clear that he’s upset. Creeping towards the door, you manage to hear “I don’t care. Tell them to move it or just cancel it altogether! I — no, I don’t need to explain why to anyone. I’m busy tomorrow and for the foreseeable future.” There’s a short pause, and then “well then tell him to call me and I can yell at him myself!”
Now you feel even more guilty, knowing Tony is cancelling work all because you’re afraid to get on an airplane.
After wrapping up his call, he enters the house and is immediately met with you asking what he just cancelled. Though he pretends to now know what you’re referring to, it’s clear that you know he’s lying.
“It was nothing important. And nothing that can’t be arranged for later. Even if it can’t, something better will come along eventually.”
“If it’s not important, why can’t you just tell me?”
“I — you remember that prick I told you about, Ransom? He wanted to finally set up a meeting and —”
“Anthony! Edward! Stark!” You smack him after each part of his name. “You have been trying to get an in with the Drysdale Corporation for years. If you don’t call back and tell whoever that was that the plans are back on, I’m getting the information from your dad and going to the meeting myself.”
Tony scoffs, “how could you possibly know that my dad knows?”
“Because even though he retired from Stark Industries, you still fill him in on everything because he appreciates feeling involved. Also we all know Howard love me and he’d totally tell me. So…”
Trying, and failing, to contain his laughter, Tony lets out a sigh, “it’s true. He does, and he would. Fine. I’ll tell you, the meeting is in Boston and I’d have to leave tomorrow. But I don’t —”
“Take the meeting, Tony. I can figure something else out. You are now allowed to hire someone to drive me, by the way. You’re already saving my life right now. I can extend the drive and just take my time doing it all myself. As long as I don’t drive too much in one day, I’ll be fine.”
As you look at him, silently pleading that he’ll say okay and still go so that he isn’t putting his life on hold for you, it’s like you can see a switch go off in his mind. “I gotta make a call. I think I know how to make this alright. Because I don’t know if I’m too comfortable with the idea of you making the drive all by yourself. You trust me?”
“Always,” your reply is almost instant.
“Hey. I can practically see the gears in your brain turning. Don’t let your thoughts go there. I’ve known you a long time, and you can’t blame yourself for this. Absolutely none of what happened to you is your fault. You are a good person, and John Walker is a fucking piece of shit. Speaking of which, I do have a possible solution —”
“No.”
“What! You don’t even know what I was going to say.”
“I do, and absolutely not.”
Tony holds his hands up in surrender, “just hear me out okay? I have an acquaintance, a friend if you will, Nick Fowler. He owes me a massive favor and I can cash it in—”
“And have him kill John?”
“Well he has worked for the CIA and he knows how to cover shit up! Just let me talk to him and I swear—”
“Tony I love you, but no. I don’t need that on my conscience. Thank you though, it is nice to know you’d risk prison for me.”
“I am going to make a call though. Don’t worry, not to Nick. But take this,” he opens his wallet and pulls a card out. One side is completely blank. The other simply reads N.F. and there’s a phone number underneath. “If anything ever happens and you need help, you call him and tell him you’re a friend of mine and you’re cashing in my favor. Okay?”
Knowing Tony will only accept once answer, you nod, tucking the card into the back of your phone case. “Okay, I’ll call him if I ever need help.”
Tony heads outside to make his call, and you duck so that he doesn’t realize you’re just on the other side of the door, trying to listen. “I know we haven’t talked in a long time and — wait, fuck. Don’t hang up alright? I — she needs you.” A pause. “Yes, that she.” Another pause. “How soon can you get to California?”
Assuming he’ll be back inside soon, you quickly walk over to the kitchen, sitting down on a stool just as the door opens again.
“Is — is your plan alright?”
“Y—yes! My plan will be here tomorrow afternoon. Tonight though, you obviously can’t go back. We have plenty of guest rooms, and you know Pepper would love to have you stay over. Plus Morgan overheard me telling her that I was going to pick you up and so she freaked out about a possible sleepover. So now you have to stay over, it’s basically illegal not to. Now come on, I’ll show you your room.”
When you reach the room, you nearly burst into tears. Morgan has covered the bed with drawings and what you assume are meant to be letters, but are really just a bunch of scribbled lines.
“Told you she was excited about you coming over. But she might try to drag you to her room later. Now you will also notice the large white bags with the Apple logo on them. I had a hunch you might have to leave your things behind so I made a few purchases.”
As you open the bags and begin pulling all of the different sized boxes out, you look back to Tony in shock. “I can’t possibly accept all of this! Anthony, what the fu—”
“Language! I made a pit stop as soon as I landed back in California. The laptop and phones still need to be set up and charged. But they both came with a 50% battery so it’s at least a little charged, and almost everyone’s phone numbers are in already. I will also not be accepting any further protests about how this is too much. We all joke about how I have a stupid amount of money, more than anyone realistically needs in their lifetime. So let me help you with a little bit of it, please.”
Before you can attempt to protest him spending this much money on you again, Tony says he’s going to make some phone calls about going to Boston, and he’ll let you get some rest.
Wide awake, but knowing your body probably really does need the rest, you lay down while scrolling through your new phone. You smile as you scroll through the contacts. Besides Tony, he also put Howard, Bruce, Steve, Peter, Nat, Yelena, Kate, Rhodey, Thor, Loki, and a handful of others.
You then notice that you already have a ton of unread messages, and for a brief moment, there’s panic that John somehow found out you’re gone and he found your new number and he’s attempting to contact you already. But then you see the messages, and immediately feel better.

After responding to everyone, you feel your eyelids grow heavy, so you decide that you will actually take a nap.
One hour later though, you’re woken up after having a nightmare. And it’s not long before your anxiety creeps back in. Stress, worry, genuine fear that John will find you, and who knows what he’d do.
“YOU’RE HERE YOU’RE HERE YOU’RE HEREEEE!” Morgan bursts into the room, immediately jumping on the bed and tackling you in the biggest hug.
Luckily for you, Morgan provides some much needed distractions for the entire day. Tea party, dress up, a second tea party, putting on concerts to her favorite songs, you don’t have time to think of John even once.
That night when Morgan and Pepper have gone to bed (Tony’s still awake, you can hear him tinkering in his lab, but you don’t feel quite ready to talk about… things, yet), you lay awake. And you begin to think of everything that could go wrong. Maybe leaving John is a mistake. He’s still out of town, so if you went back right now then he’d never know you attempted to leave in the first place.
Finally at an unknown time, you manage to fall asleep. But once you open your eyes again, the thoughts come back quickly. You can’t stay on those bad thoughts for long though, because Morgan once again runs into the room and jumps on the bed. Pepper follows closely behind, apologizing and saying she tried to tell Morgan to wait until you’d come out of the room.
Glancing at the clock, you see that it’s already 7:30am. You’ve been wallowing in your own thoughts for nearly an hour.
“You wanna help me pick out something to wear?” You ask Morgan, who claps and turns giddy with joy. After throwing out nearly ever piece of clothing in one of the suitcases, Morgan decides on one of the first outfits she pulled out.
You quickly go into the bathroom to change and brush your teeth, and come back into the room just as Tony gets there. Pepper ushers Morgan out, promising Morgan that she’ll be able to play again as soon as you’re done talking.
Once they’re both down the hall, Tony informs you that his backup plan will arrive at 1pm today.
“Why can’t I know who it is again? I mean it has to be someone I already know because you wouldn’t ask just anyone to make the drive with me. And someone I don’t know probably wouldn’t want to do it anyway.”
“What can I say?” he shrugs, “I love a good surprise.”
Around 9am, after everyone has had breakfast, Tony helps you bring your suitcases out of your room and back by the front door. He reassures you that there’s no rush to leave, but he figures you’d want to get the hell out of California as soon as possible. And he’s right.
After that, you spend the next few hours watching movies in the living room with Morgan, while Pepper hops on back to back conference calls, and Tony takes work calls and prepares to leave to Boston not long after you and your mystery road trip partner hit the road.
At exactly 12:45pm, the doorbell rings. You immediately tense up as you watch Tony walk towards the door, wondering who the hell he asked to make the trip with you.
It definitely isn’t Peter or Bruce, because they’ve got big mouths and definitely would’ve accidentally told you by now. That, and Peter would’ve asked about a roadtrip playlist or something, this spoiling the surprise unintentionally. And it’s not Yelena or Nat because they’re in Russia. You don’t think it’s anyone else that text you either, just based on what they said. So who —
“Hey kiddo come meet your road trip buddy!”
When you make your way to the front door, you’re stunned into silence. You had your ideas of who it definitely wasn’t, but nothing could’ve prepared you for who Tony actually chose.
The man who broke your heart.
“ — Bucky?”
“Hey doll, been a while.”

“Let me get this straight.”
You and Peter sit on the couch as the entire team, plus Pepper Potts, Happy, and most importantly, Aunt May.
After much discussion, you had come to the decision that it’d be easier for Peter to break the bad news in the comfort of his own home. So, after calling the superheroes, they’d snuck in and crammed into the small apartment.
You have the poor teen wrapped up in a fluffy blanket and your arms. He’d slept incredibly shittily, only falling asleep somewhere after 4 AM. The dark circles staining his undereyes are especially prominent since you had refused to give him coffee in fear of increasing his anxiety. Instead, you’d provided lavender tea.
Tony continues. “A man named Quentin Beck found you on your patrol.” He pauses for Peter to nod in affirmation. “He knew who you were. And he wants my tech under threat of revealing your identity.” Peter sniffles.
You nod, eyeing the tightly drawn curtains and blinds. The genius thinks for a moment as the team paces, carefully avoiding bumping into each other or the furniture.
“Oh, Peter.” May slumps down onto the couch with you both, joining you in hugging her nephew.
You slip away with a ruffle of his hair, pouring another cup of tea from the stove. Quentin Beck. The name seems so familiar.
With an extra cup of tea, you return to the living room, passing one to Peter. He sips it gratefully and you sit on the coffee table. “Could FRIDAY tell us anything about Beck?” you ask to no one in particular.
“Maybe,” Steve says. “Why?” As Tony projects a few screens from his glasses you shrug.
“Quentin Beck, fired from Stark Industries, blah, blah, blah,” Clint mumbles. You approach another floating article. ‘Researcher discredited by the SVTRB (Silicon Valley Tech Review Board), founded by Dr. (L/N).’
“That’s where I know him!” you exclaim. “My dad was the one who investigated his research.” You enlarge the article. ‘Scientist Quentin Beck was found to be running unethical projects involving weaponizing drones with enhanced projections and heavily-armed artillery. Though the board considered pressing charges, they have decided to instead strip Mr. Beck from his title and licenses, as well as charging him a hefty fine.’
“Wait…” Steve begins. “If your dad led an investigation into Beck…” Bucky finishes the statement. “… he’d have intel on him. Criminal history, address, family, education.”
You sigh. “My dad’s a stickler for organization; he keeps every file.” His office. You had the keys to every cabinet, every lockbox. “The files could be there…?”
“‘Could?’” Tony parrots. You shrug. From the couch, Peter speaks up, voice spent and quiet.
“Are either of them home?”
Your parents. Gulping, you feel a sick turn of your stomach.
“I’m not sure.”
———————————————————————
You struggle to keep up the confident façade as you lead the entire group to your apartment. Heads turn in the lobby, but no one comments. Weirder things had happened in the high-end apartment building.
All of you cram into an elevator and you press the button for your floor, shuffling awkwardly. Peter still has his blanket wrapped around him. The Black Widow, famed assassin and a walking legend, is in a hoodie that looks suspiciously too large for her and Snoopy pajama pants.
When you all reach your floor and eventually your apartment, you reluctantly unlock the door, groaning internally as you hear two voices inside. Just your luck.
“Mom, Dad,” you greet, loud enough for the team to hear you. You whirl around, hissing out, “Don’t bring up the files or Beck.”
You turn back to your parents. “Um, I’ve got kind of a surprise.” Revealing the team, you watch their eyes widen.
“(Y/N), why are there Avengers in our doorway?” your mother asks. You wince.
“The internship? I told you about it back in August, I think,” you manage, throat tightening. She hums. She always hums.
Your father straightens up from the other side of the kitchen. “That doesn’t explain why they're here.” And you falter.
Luckily, Tony is overflowing with charisma. “Mr. (L/N), so nice to finally meet you. Your daughter has done such a great job at her internship, that we wanted to offer her a sponsorship for whichever college she chooses and a job with at Stark Industries, should she want to work with us.”
You freeze, detecting zero dishonesty in his tone. The offer clearly isn’t just a cover, judging by the smiles you get from the team when you glance around. It’s a dream opportunity.
But now isn’t the time to celebrate. Tony’s still talking, managing to occupy your parents’ attention for longer than you have in the past decade. So you sneak off, slipping into the office with the keys in hand.
Now, where would that file be? You scan the labels, frantically opening one of the drawers and thumbing through files. Nothing.
You have no idea how long you search before you find a drawer labeled “Investigations A-C”. You unlock it after trying a few different keys, shoving the “A” files away as you search for “Beck”.
Got it. Silently cheering and pumping your fist in a brief celebration, you tuck the file under your arm and sneak to your room, grabbing a messenger bag to slip the papers into.
When you return to the kitchen, Tony’s still bullshitting his way through the conversation, going on about the workplace atmosphere Stark Industries provided and what jobs he thinks you would be best at.
“She’d be really great at planning missions and researching what we need to know about the area, plus that’d give her a flexible schedule. She also has this great idea to start a garden at the tower to grow produce for a sort of soup kitchen,” he rambles.
Wanda nods. “She planned out the budgeting and everything.” They remembered. The whole idea was a bit offhand one night, and you almost thought they’d forgotten. But they hadn’t. Not only did they remember, but they thought it was a good enough idea to genuinely consider.
You sniffle. Tony glances over at your intrusion and you wipe your eyes before pointing to the bag clutched to your side. Quickly tying up the exchange, he claps his hands. “Well, we’d love to stay longer, but we’ve actually got some research back at the tower we need (Y/N)’s input on,” Tony says. It’s not a complete lie. “So we’d best get going.”
They hurry out the door, leaving you to linger in the kitchen. You aren’t quite sure why you’re hesitating.
“Well,” you say, straightening your posture. “I’ll be back later tonight.”
Not even a glance up. Your mother mumbles, “Bye, dear.” and your father half-heartedly waves. They don’t mention the cut on your jaw, or the fact that you didn’t come home last night. They don’t congratulate you on landing a stable job before you’ve even graduated, working with the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
And they don’t notice when you sniffle and slam the door. But the team does.
“You alright, kid?” Sam asks, nudging your shoulder. You nod, ignoring the actions, or rather, lack thereof, of your parents. No one seems convinced, but the task at hand keeps them from pressing any further.
But right then and there, they all make a silent decision.
———————————————————————
Back at the tower, you flip through the file. Quentin Beck has had a painfully average life, graduating at a normal pace with a normal house and normal hobbies. Until he started making weaponized drones.
On top of tracking this guy down, you also had another problem to solve. How did he learn that Peter was Spider-Man? You suspected it had something to do with his tech, seeing as Tony’s could identify people from dozens of feet away.
The billionaire was currently using satellites in an attempt to locate Beck, to no avail. May, Pepper, and Happy were speaking in hushed tones, casting worried glances at Peter every now and then. Steve, Sam, and Rhodey were strategizing how best to talk down the man, while Vision was scanning the internet in search of any articles or hints of his whereabouts. Nat, Bucky, and Clint had slipped away a while ago to find as many electric-based weapons as the barracks would provide.
This was turning out to be an Avengers-level threat.
Meanwhile, you and Wanda sit with Peter. The low thrum of her powers keeps his mind from racing too fast, and you absentmindedly wrap a hand around his shoulders as you pore over the files.
Your eyes jump from paragraph to paragraph, soaking up details as fast as your mind can keep up. Words blur as you enter an autopilot.
“Beck… Yale… Engineering with an emphasis in robotics… network of drones… armed… clearly not intended for military use…” You mutter aloud, halting in your tracks as you fully comprehend the words. “Network. The drones.” You stand up, waving the paper. “The drones are on a network!”
Rhodey gestures for you to elaborate. “Meaning…?”
“It says here that they were controlled from one big computer. They’re all connected by a network, which has to be public on some level, which means if we program in the right constraints, we could find the IP address.” You pace as you talk, hands flying wildly. “I mean, any other tech wouldn’t be able to track him down, fuck knows what kind of VPNs he’s got set up. But FRIDAY could get him, right?”
Tony grins. “I knew we kept you around for something, kid.” He begins to type away as you scoff, rolling your eyes. Vision starts calculating and you can see his eyes flitting back and forth.
You don’t know how much time passes. Seconds, minutes, hours. But Tony still looks up triumphantly as FRIDAY triangulates a location. The smug grin fades as dozens of dots appear. Drones. Possibly hundreds of them.
The absentee trio of assassins returns at that moment and everyone circles up. Even Peter, who seems to be becoming more aware as the red dots surrounding one white triangle reveal the gravity of the situation.
“We need to take him out.” Steve’s words are definite. “But we need to be smart about it. If we give him a chance to think, he could publish anything about Peter’s identity. We need to be quick, efficient.”
“Stark, Vision, I want you two trying your damnedest to shut down those drones. We can’t fight all of them and Beck. Rhodes and Wilson, you’ll target any strays. Contain the situation. Romanoff and I will try to get to Beck. Barton, Maximoff, Buck: I need you all sniping down any drones that get too close.” The plan is simple. Solid. But it’s missing something.
“You need a decoy,” Peter pipes up, voicing your thoughts. “I need to pretend to fulfill the deal.” Okay, no, that was definitely not what you had in mind.
You say so. “Pete, I’m not sure that’s the best idea. You’re the one he’s targeting, after all.” You wave a hand at the cloud of drones. “This? This seems like a setup. He created those hyper-realistic projections, and he could project some false reality and get you all hurt. It’s, like, a bad sci-fi trope.”
“So what’s your idea?” he asks.
Your acrylic nails click on the glass table. “Give me a computer. I can try and take out any projections.”
Several voices raise in protest around the room. A few yells of, “No way, it’s too dangerous.” and even a, “Fuck no!” thrown in for flavor. You wait for them to calm down before speaking again.
“Projections are his whole wheelhouse. And judging by BARF, they’ve gotten pretty convincing. Beck’s expecting all of you.” You wave to the team, three of which are already suited up. “He’s not expecting some random teenage girl to sneak in behind his firewalls and pull the rug right from under him.” You know your point got across when a few of them frown and begin to think it over.
“Are you seriously considering that?” Peter exclaims. “(Y/N), I can’t let you put yourself into harm’s way like that.”
“Well, it’s a good thing that you aren’t letting me do anything. I want to help,” you say, your tone leaving no room for argument.
Peter’s gaze softens. “If you get hurt, I feel like that’s on me.” Tony looks up from across the room and mutters something that sounds suspiciously like, “Kid’s stealing my lines.” You ignore it.
Lifting a hand, you take Peter’s cheek and rub your thumb against his unfairly-smooth skin. He leans into your touch.
“I’ll be fine, Pete. I won’t even be actually fighting. Just behind a screen; honestly, I’ve got plenty of experience doing that.” He laughs, and you consider your job done.
“Alright.” He nods. “Alright, that’s alright. As long as you’re safe.” He lifts his hand, extending his pinky. You link yours, shaking your entwined fingers with far too much force to be necessary.
With Peter’s approval, it seems the decision is made. You’ll help from behind the scenes, far from danger.
“Wait, does this make me an honorary Avenger?”
———————————————————————
Only an hour later, the team is completely suited up and you’ve been planted in the lab, surrounded by the most high-tech computers you’ve ever had the privilege of using. A magical experience, truly.
“Oh man, this is fucking wild,” you mumble as you barely ghost a hand over a projected screen, watching as it flickers to life under your fingertips. Stark’s tech is beyond intuitive, you decide as you “grab” a stack of hologram photos and make a throwing gesture, watching as they spread out in front of you and list details about each one.
The Avengers make some last-minute adjustments, checking weapons and programming the right voltage to tasers and blasters to most effectively take out the drones. You pull up all the programs you’ll need.
Something feels like it’s… missing.
“Hey, Nat?” you ask. The redhead walks over, tilting her head. “Can I have a taser gun? Just a gut feeling.”
The gun she gives you looks nothing like your standard taser gun, and when she fires off a neon blue charge of electricity across the room, you know it definitely isn’t cleared for civilian use.
“Always trust your gut,” she advises, pressing it into the palm of your hand before walking off to help Clint organize his arrows.
You turn the gun over, examining the trigger, testing your grip. The team finishes getting ready as soon as you click off the safety.
“Everyone understand the plan?” Steve asks. You nod. All you had to do was take down any projections. Tony and Vision would only be able to shut down the drones if they could see them, after all.
As the team makes their way to the garage, they pat you on the shoulder, wishing you luck. Peter lingers a bit longer, looking around to make sure Sam and Bucky weren’t watching before giving you a brief kiss and hugging you close. He rests his forehead against yours and you let out deep sighs in tandem.
“Stay safe,” you say. It’s more of a demand, an order, than a well wish.
“I will.”
And with that, he rushes off, mask in hand and suit on under civilian clothes. You turn to Happy, Pepper, and May, who are awwing at yours and Peter’s interaction.
“Y’all are gross,” you comment. “But stay safe.” The two were tasked with getting May safely home and protecting her there, leaving you alone in the tower. May gives you a tight hug and Pepper wishes you luck. Happy gives you a thumbs up.
Once they leave, you look up at the ceiling. “FRIDAY?”
“Yes, Miss?”
“Put the lab on lockdown, please.”
As doors shut and lock, you slip into a chair and put in the earpiece left for you. Tapping it once, you listen to the conversation.
“Hey, kid.” Tony’s voice is slightly crackly at first, but smooths out. “We’re split up in these cars, but we’re all about twelve minutes out. Can you start looking at those drones?”
“Got it.” You type rapid-fire, letting FRIDAY help you scan the area for Beck’s drones. Once the AI pops up with the location, you begin making your way through his countless firewalls and VPNs. You have to admit, the guy is making this difficult.
It takes a solid few minutes before you strip away the final barrier of protection Quentin is hiding behind, but when you do, you’re only given more work.
“Good news, I’m ‘in’, as the hackers say,” you grumble into the earpiece. “Bad news, he’s running dozens of illusions and projections. This’ll take a while to knock out.”
“Can you do it?”
You sigh. “Oh, ye of little faith, Rogers. You’re just lucky I took that coding class to fill up my schedule.”
The team makes it to their positions before you even take out one, and you can hear Peter begin talking to the man who could ruin his privacy. Thankfully, you make your way into his surveillance system, and watch the scene carefully. Beck’s in some sort of costume, cape and all. His shoulders and chest are gilded in gold, and a fishbowl-looking helmet is resting at his hip. It’s fugly.
“Hey, Beck. I’ve got your tech,” he says. The sound is muffled, but he seems grateful, and there’s a shuffling as the case of Stark Tech is passed between them.
“Stark doesn’t know, does he?” Beck asks.
“No, I don’t think he suspects anything.” You hear the other man hum for a moment.
The next time his voice is heard, it’s much clearer. Closer.
“There’s no chance you’re double-crossing me, is there, Peter?” Your blood runs cold. You can hear Peter stammer out a “No.” It doesn’t seem to convince the disgraced scientist. “Really? Why’re you wearing your suit then?”
Almost everyone mutters out, “Fuck.” in unison, except for a few deviations in Russian and Sokovian. You speed up your work, struggling to keep up even with FRIDAY’s help. Finally, you tear apart one projection, watching as Beck flickers, revealing a CGI suit.
What? Why would there be a projection on him? The other drones quickly patch the mistake, but the brief glitch was unmistakeable.
“You really thought I wouldn’t see your little entourage?” he hisses. Apparently, he didn’t notice the momentary loss of his suit’s sleeve. “You’re in my world now. And you’ve brought the Avengers right to me.”
The screen goes dark as the drones go into overdrive, projecting a green fog over the area. It’s immersive, descending the group into panicked fumbling as they try to move through a fake world.
“Shit, (Y/N), now would be a great time to get more of those illusions down,” Sam hisses quietly. You nod even though he can’t see it and return to the computer.
Now that you’ve taken out one layer, peeling the others back will be much easier. You set a standard algorithm for FRIDAY to test on each line of code, which manages to take out a few of the simpler projections.
Every now and then. You’ll glance at the surveillance. It’s broken into a full-on battle now, though Beck has an unfair advantage. Wanda blasts out energy at random, accidentally hitting Rhodey at one point. Steve throws the shield, only to not see it coming back at him and be knocked off his feet. Clint and Bucky bump into each other in the overwhelming darkness, ready to smack the shit out of each other before their voices give them away.
They’re a mess, you think to yourself as you type. You manage to strip away another layer, and for a brief moment, the projections halt just long enough for the team to get their bearings.
And just like that, the illusions are back online, though the quality is noticeably lower. Moving through them fast enough causes a blur when the cameras can’t quite keep up with the motion tracking.
Meanwhile, the Avengers are having what you would call a rough time. Even the brief moments of reality you provide are barely enough to keep them from falling apart.
“Y’know, for the Earth’s ‘Mightiest’ Heroes, you’re taken out extremely easily,” Beck gloats. “But I’ve had enough fun.” With a snap of his fingers, the setting of the projections changes, and they’re planted at the airport. The fight, over six months ago.
“You all are rather pathetic. In fact, you almost did my job for me in Germany.” The scene changes again, sending the heroes tumbling as rubble falls around them. “But here I am. You just had to make this messy.” The drones begin to fire, blasts coming from nowhere.
Tony manages to take out a few drones by having FRIDAY retrace the trajectory of the bullets, but as soon as one goes down, ten more take its place. Vision blasts wildly, only causing more rubble to collapse. He tugs Wanda out of the way just as a huge block of concrete smashes into the ground.
Peter’s panicking, the illusions combined with his enhanced senses completely overwhelming him. You hear his breaths racing and pause from typing. “Peter, you’ve gotta breath,” you soothe, out of breath yourself. “Focus. Use that Spidey-sense you’ve got.”
Your voice acts like a lighthouse, showing him a better solution. A way through the suffocating fog and darkness. He closes his eyes.
And he leaps.
For a moment, his stomach drops in fear he miscalculated. But then he collides with a drone, webbing it up before leaping to the next.
As more drones disable, you return to the keyboard, whittling down the programs until only a few remain. As you finally shut down the last projection, freeing the team from the waking nightmare, you prepare to completely kill the drones, shutting down their entire protocol and rendering them useless.
“You aren’t Beck,” Steve says over the comm. The man posing as Beck is donned in a CGI suit, lifting his hands as Nat trains a gun on him. “Where is he?” she demands.
“Freeze, everyone.” Beck, the real Beck’s voice, echoes through the comms. But there’s another layer to it.
The lab doors slide open.
A disheveled man emerges, a gun trained on you. Out of the corner of your eye, you see more drones emerge around the team, circling them into a tight ball. A kill circle, you realize.
“If you honestly thought it’s be that easy, you are sorely mistaken,” Quentin spits, only getting closer to you. “Now, you’re going to stay right there as I rid the world of the most resilient pests to walk upon it.”
Your friends. They’re yelling into their earpieces, but you aren’t comprehending their words. You’re calculating.
Beck is injured. You’re not sure why or how, but he’s limping on his left leg, right one raised off the floor. His knuckles are busted and there’s a goose egg forming on his forehead. His eyes are glazed, struggling to focus on you.
So you do what you do best. Gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss. You run your mouth.
“Alright, Jesus fucking Christ,” you growl, shocking him. “Can you put the goddamn gun down? You’re making me nervous.” You turn around slowly, hands still in the air.
“(Y/N), do not do something heroically dumb,” Peter hisses over the comm.
You chuckle, eyeing the button that’ll take out the drones. Your taser gun is right next to it. “Heroic? No.” Inhaling deeply, you smirk at the screen. “Dumb? Absolutely.”
In one smooth motion, you click the button and grab the taser gun, whirling around and shooting Beck in the chest. He fires the gun at the same time, evidently missing. You wince at the loud noise, shaking your head as the ringing in your ears fades to reveal the worried voices of your friends.
“Holy shit, is she okay?”
“Kid? Kid, talk to us!”
You pant, adrenaline rushing through your system. “I’m good, it’s all good.” You grab duct tape, wrapping it around the passed-out man’s wrists, arms, legs, and ankles. Tony projects a screen, showing the team’s relieved faces. The drones are shut down, scattered around the abandoned building.
You move the screen lower to show the man, laughing as you pose beside him and brandish the taser. “Glad I asked for this thing, yeah?” None of them respond. You rub at your head to chase away an oncoming dizziness. “C’mon, that’s at least a little funny.”
“(Y/N), I need you to focus, okay?” Tony’s voice has taken a suspiciously quiet tone. “I need you to find a medkit.”
“What, why?” You look down, freezing instantly. It seems Beck’s aim was a bit better than you thought. “Oh, that’s- that’s blood. Okay.” Honestly, you can’t feel it. All you can see is the growing red cloud in your shirt.
You follow Tony’s directions as he takes off into the sky, leaving the rest of the non-fliers to shuffle into the cars. Peter webs onto the Iron Man suit, heart heavy and pounding as he listens to Mr. Stark amble off advice.
“I need the, the… What’s it called?” Your voice is quieter than normal. “The AAJT. Abdominal Aortic and Junctional Tourniquet. You got one of those?”
“Why the fuck do you know what that is?” You hear Clint grumble, concern still evident in his tone.
You groan “Med class.” at the same time Tony says, “Yes, fourth drawer on the left of the sinks.” You throw open said drawer, yanking out the tool.
“Aw, man, this is gonna feel like shit.”
“Just put it on, kid,” the genius sighs. “We’re almost there.” You faithfully wrap the band around your stomach, taking a few deep breaths to hype yourself up before yanking the little plastic buckle as tight as possible.
“Oh, motherfucker,” you hiss. “Oh my fucking god, that stings like a bitch.”
“You’ve gotta pump that compressor, can you do that?” You’re not sure who’s talking now and you’re not sure if you respond, but you do as they say nonetheless, pumping the small rubber ballon as the device tightens around your abdomen.
For all of your tough guy act, you whimper. The room’s spinning, and you’re pretty sure that you aren’t high enough -you aren’t high at all, actually- for your gravity to feel this askew.
By the time the fliers arrive, you’re curled up into a ball, cussing like a sailor as you weakly continue to squeeze the compressor.
“Okay, okay. Hey, kid? We’re here, you’re gonna be fine. Dr. Cho’s on her way from the compound with the Cradle, she’ll get you fixed up.” You nod as Tony rambles.
Sam sits down beside you, taking the compressor from you and pumping it. “So, what do you think of your first ‘mission’?” he chuckles. Always trying to lighten the mood.
“I think…” you pause to swallow and cough. “... I think it, it fuckin’ sucks.” You grin as a few laughs sound around you. From across the room, Wanda sighs in relief.
“Good news,” she holds up a small metal bullet, red haze surrounding it. “The bullet is whole. No fragments.” Likewise, Tony gives you an encouraging grin as he kneels beside you. “FRIDAY said it’s just a graze. No internal bleeding. You got pretty lucky.”
Peter sniffles. “Doesn’t seem like it.” You can hear the guilt in his tone.
“Hey, none of that,” you grumble. “You heard them: I’ll be fine. Plus, I’ve got a cool-ass scar now. God, I can lord this over Flash forever.”
He laughs at that, the sound warming you up from the inside. “You just got shot, and the first thing you think about is how to shit on Flash Thompson?”
“Oh, yeah. This is a great subject for a valedictorian speech, y’know?”
Rhodey raises a brow from where he’s tracking the rest of the team. “Getting a bit ahead of yourself, (Y/N),” he chuckles.
“Oh, please.” You wave a hand. “I’d say I’ve got it in the bag.”
Peter maneuvers your head into his lap, running his hands through your hair. “I’m glad you’re okay,” he whispers. “I don’t know what I would’ve done if you… if you-” Before he even finishes the sentence he’s tearing up, so you cut him off.
“Ssh, I know. I’m not going anywhere.”
———————————————————————
“Oh, wow, that’s really weird.”
Helen Cho had arrived shortly after, setting up the Cradle. After she cleaned your wound, you were laid in the machine. It slowly regenerated your tissue, passing over the wound and essentially rebuilding the damaged muscle.
An hour later, she wrapped the still-bruised skin and offered you painkillers, which you politely declined. A Tylenol Extra Strength would be fine.
“Thanks, Doc,” you chirp. She smiles and makes a quick exit to see to the other injured security guards, which were the reason that Beck was so beat up by the time he made it to you.
“Glad to know you’re alright,” Steve says. You nod, patting down the gauze. The entire team is scattered around the lounge, some with injuries of their own. Tony groans as he sits up from where he’s draped on the couch.
“So, (Y/N), as compensation for getting you shot on your first ‘mission’-”
“Tony, you don’t have to do anything like that, really. I knew the risks, and i don’t regret helping out.” You shrug. “Just, like, buy me some wine-” You get immediately smacked in the face with a pillow. Steve. “I’m kidding, I’m kidding! Halfway. Also, I’m injured. You can’t deck me with pillows.”
“You are bruised at worst,” the captain snarks. You make a face at him.
“All right, ladies, calm down.” Tony stands up and begins pacing, hands stuffed in his pockets. “I’m not buying you wine, but I can offer you something better.” Hmm, now you’re intrigued. “We already let you know about the job offer, but now that you’re technically a member of the team we wanted to offer you something else. We’ve thought about it a lot, and the decision was unanimous.”
He lifts a hand from his pocket, revealing a single key. “How would you like to move in? It could be once you graduate, or you could-” You tackle him in a hug, eyes watering.
“Yeah, that’d be great.” Some claps erupt and you feel some extra arms join in the hug. “Can I have the key?” you ask, making grabby hands.
“Well, the key actually doesn’t go to anything. It’s more symbolic.” You laugh, snatching the key anyway. The team begins discussing how to help you move, what room you want, decor. As you listen contently, you feel arms wrap around your shoulders.
“Did you know about this, Mister?” you ask Peter, twisting to press a kiss to his cheek.
He shrugs, a smile giving him away as he sways with you. “Maybe. I’m glad you liked the surprise, though.”
“I loved it, how could I not?”
You can’t help but feel relieved. There’s a weight off of your shoulders knowing that you won’t be stuck with your parents for any longer, stifled in a house that never had anything close to what you’ve felt at the tower.
You feel, well… at home.
