Once upon a time when employees are being interviewed at SI:

Interviewer: So what is it like working for Iron Man?

Employee A: Oh! Easy question. I like that. It is an honor, you know. It's what I thought when I joined, and it still is now. But also, I did not expect that SI is a place where we are allowed to prioritize things like family. Like last time, I left my phone on silent at my desk cause I had to go to a meeting. My kid at home was having an emergency and I couldn't be reached. But apparently, Friday, Mr. Stark's AI, keeps track of phone vibrations so she made the report and someone came to notify me. I didn't even know there was a protocol for that. Turns out my daughter was having her period for the first time! And I'm a single father so I had no idea what to do and I was panicking. Next thing I know, an SI nurse came and apparently she was sent by Mr. Stark to walk me through how to help. Apparently, Fri also caught my panic rumblings and triggered 'YOU ARE NOT ALONE PROTOCOL' or something. (*laughing*) The next week, we received an official email introducing a new department called Human Care. They encourage everyone to reach out if we ever find ourselves out of our depths on non company emergency matters.

Interviewer: How long have you been working here?

Employee B: Eight years, two months, six days and counting.

Interviewer: What's the weirdest thing you've witnessed here?

Employee B: (blanks out)

Employee B (struggling to think): Ahm. Really? Just one? Er- That's a tough one. Maybe that one time they set up a room for everyone to try lifting Thor's hammer? Or wait, no, maybe that time there when flying roombas were everywhere following Mr. Stark and reminding him to eat? Or when a villain came via the vents but before he could come down, Hawkeye accidentally hit him with pepper spray? I don't know, man. Weird things happen a lot. We're used to it by now.

Interviewer: Do you feel safe working here?

Employee C: Yeah. The avengers live here. But to tell you the truth, I think Happy Hogan and his black tux team of agents scare all the potential bad guys away. I heard rumors that Black Widow personally trains them. Like, I know two of them. Jake, for instance. He's like a giant, and he is intimidating but I saw him crying one time and when I asked him why, he just said Mr. Hogan.

Interviewer: Which avenger have you met?

Employee D: Oh, I've met two of them. Captain America and Thor. It was odd but one time, they were in the cafeteria and carrying trays of food and I do not mean just one each. Nope. Like, a ton! Like they're feeding an army. But it makes sense. Can you imagine the workout? With bodies like theirs? And the battles they go to? Man, if I have to save the world from aliens, I'll probably need the same nutrition.

Interviewer: Which avenger is the kindest?

Employee E: Ahm...We all know they're all badass. But kindest, I think Spider-Man. Last Thursday, it was raining, and then Spidey suddenly came all wet and holding a box and I'm gonna quote him now. He said, "Friday, can you please ask Mr. Sam Wilson Falcon sir to come down? The shelter is close and I have a box of puppies and I really, really want to bring them up but Mr. Stark is gonna ban me from the lab again."

Interviewer: Aww. So what happened next? What did they do with the puppies?

Employee E (grinning): Falcon came down, alright. But he came with Iron Man who zoomed past everyone to drag Spidey to the penthouse. I am not sure what I heard but he was muttering about oven toasters and frozen spiderlings? In the end, aome employees volunteered to take care of them. But I believe two of them are at the avengers' floor. We saw Mr. Stark ranting about puppy paw paint marks on his armani.

Interviewer (gasps): Oh my. Was he mad?

Employee E (ends up laughing): Mad? Try grunting fondly? Peter really likes those puppies. Mr. Stark tried to act like he hates them but really, he adores everything about the kid, puppies included. He even had custom made collars with avengers logo made for them.

Interviewer: I'm sorry? The Winter Soldier was asking directions to where?

Employee F: The Lego Store.

Interviewer: How would you describe the workload? Do you still get work life balance?

Employee G: I guess it depends. I work in R&D and we're all nerds there. So like, we're typically busy but it's play for us. Some days, we're really cramped with work, mostly when deadlines are nearing or sometimes, we're just really in the zone, we do not want to stop. Peter activated 'NIGHT NIGHT PROTOCOL' for that. Had Fri lock us out of the lab and we had no choice but to go home or nap at the sleep wing. And would you believe? After the product launch, we got emails on mandatory vacation leaves with bonus to spend! Like, who does that? So yeah, it's cool working here.

And then, there was this:

Interviewer: How does it feel to be the heir of a multibillion dollar top green tech company?

Peter (stares quizzically, dumb-founded): Uhhh-....Look, sorry, I think I'm in the wrong room. I'm not- Maybe you got the wrong questionnaire? I'm just an intern-

Interviewer: Oh. Wait. Is it top secret then? Sorry, I was told of your identity as Mr. Stark's kid so I thought I could ask. But if you're not comfortable-

Peter: WHAT!?? Who said that? They're probably just joking.

Interviewer (chuckles nervously): Ms. Potts did actually.

Peter (freezes): Oh.

Suddenly the door opens and Tony walks in.

Tony: Hey kid, and Ms. Carrenland. How's the interview going? Thought I'd drop by for moral support, you know.

Peter (looks torn, but excuses himself to go to Tony): Uhm, Mr. Stark, can I talk to you for a second? Look, sir, ahm, I think there's been a misunderstanding. The interviewer asks me how it feels to be your heir. Like that's real. I don't-

Tony (has his brows rising to his hairline): Kid. Peter. Breathe.

Peter (groans and sighs embarrassingly): I just didn't want to lie! They mistook me for someone else. It was a misunderstanding!

Tony (smirking): It's really not.

Peter: What?

Tony: Kiddo, I was the one who gave Pep the approval to sign the questions. And really, you've been managing the R&D department and shadowing Pep at management for a year now. You never wondered why I make you do that?

Peter: Oh.

Tony: Yup. Genius child here.

Peter: I just wanted to help. You seem stressed out with the Avengers' work and dealing with the government. I thought I could lend a hand. I didn't- I don't expect you to- I'm not worth that, Mr. Stark.

Tony (scoffs): I beg to differ. Look, I'll be honest with you. Even if you aren't interested in the company, it's still gonna be yours. Look around you, kid. Do you think I let just anyone go around with a free pass at my tower? You have a room at my home. This place is your home, as where as everywhere else that I own. Plus, it's another motivation for you to take care of yourself when you go out as Spidey. Imagine all our employees. They need you, kiddo.

Peter (mumbling softly): I'm just Peter Parker.

Tony (smiles and pats his shoulder): And that is why I chose you.

Why nothing makes sense part 7.

Wedding edition

Before I start my little post about why nothing makes sense about this whole wedding and marriage thing, I'd like to declare that I'm not saying or stating that they haven't gotten married or that there wasn't a wedding; this is simply about why nothing makes sense about it.

So the whole wedding debate started when we saw Dennis (Chris's friend) go public and share in his story that Jamie, Bryan, and Mark were together in a bar. This made people immediately jump to the conclusion that they were there because Chris and Alba would get married. Then people posted that Hemsworth, RDJ, and Renner were at a restaurant. According to someone who said they were part of the group who met Hemsworth and Renner, Hemsworth told them that they were in Boston because of Evans's wedding. This was immediately really weird to me, since I doubt Hemsworth would've told random strangers that they were getting married. Chris and Alba didn't talk about getting married publicly, so it was a secret. The public didn't know about the wedding date, if they were engaged, or if they were going to get married. I'm pretty sure Hemsworth knew about this and wouldn't spill any tea, especially to complete strangers. Then things were silent until Dennis went public again and posted a picture of himself and his wife dressed up elegantly. This, again, fueled the fire.

After all of these, we got the Page Six article about them reportedly being married. Obviously, after that, almost every outlet ran with this news and posted their own article, everybody quoting Page Six, even People. Page Six wrote that those who attended the wedding had to sign an NDA and couldn't have their phones with them. This whole NDA thing sounds so interesting to me. We talked about Hemsworth spilling that they are getting married, and I said that I don't think he would do that to a friend, but the fact that he even signed an NDA makes the whole thing even less sensible. I also found the phone thing very interesting. Does that mean he doesn't trust his friends? If they knew they were going to sell the story and share breadcrumbs of it, and even of the second wedding, why couldn't the guests have their phones? So they can control what, when, and how it gets out? So we know that according to the source, they had a private wedding and only invited their close family and friends, yet there were several people missing. I missed Scarlett, Octavia, Mackie, Seb, and from her side, her cousin, who was on vacation with her entire family. Every article mentioned the Avengers, his Marvel co-star being there, but what about those close family members? Why wasn't there any mention of them? According to the article, Emily and John were also there, but I don't think they were actually there. They only mentioned her because they have a movie together.

After people found Scarlett's non-presence weird, they posted an article saying they saw Scarlett and Robert together in Boston. It's really interesting that this article was published after people questioned her whereabouts, and it's also really interesting that there were no sightings of her. So people saw the other Avengers out together in a restaurant and took pictures of them, and even if just one person saw Scar and Robert out, I doubt they wouldn't have taken a picture of those two.

Talking about sightings. Why did nobody see or hear the wedding? I'm not even talking about pictures, but like a DM anon, a blind item, or somebody tweeting something about it. People see him walking Dodger and doing everyday stuff, but nobody sees anything unusual; nobody spots the avenger there? No matter which house or location we are talking about, it's weird that nobody saw, heard, or witnessed anything.

We also have some problems with the location. So Page Six said the ceremony took place in Massachusetts, at their Boston-area home, while People said the wedding was in Cape Cod. While both places are in Massachusetts, they aren't really close to each other. People also said that Hemsworth, Downey, and their wives were photographed having dinner, which we all know is not true because it was his mom. Was Elsa at the wedding? Probably not, and why was his mom there when she doesn't even know Evans or anybody else there? Who knows. Then we got another article from People saying that they were serious very quickly; this was another source exclusive. In this article, the place of the wedding was still Cape Cod. Then there was another People article that said that they had a party in his Boston-area home to celebrate their marriage. According to another exclusive source "a large tent and dance floor were set up at the house", we know this must have been someone who was there because, as I've already mentioned, nobody sent an anon to DM, came to Tumblr, tweeted, or wrote a blind item that they saw, heard, or witnessed anything wedding-related. This article was published on the 12th, which is basically three days after the wedding. People said that the wedding weekend also included a gathering in Cape Cod, which is such an interesting wording since I don't think anybody would call a wedding a "gathering". A wedding is a wedding to me. Here they again said that Elsa was also there, which is still interesting since in the restaurant that was most definitely Hemsworth's mom, not wife. So why wasn't Elsa there? Where was she? And what was Hemsworth's mom doing there in the first place? On the same day, Page Six posted another article where they referred to the People article about the Boston party. Page Six said that the main wedding celebration was in Boston, yet they had another gathering in Cape Cod. So it seems like they still couldn't decide where the wedding was.

I doubt they would've had two gatherings or that they would've held the wedding and the party at a different spot. The Cape Cod private estate would've been perfect, maybe even a better choice for the party, but they definitely could've just gotten married and had a party at his Boston-area home. I didn't really understand why they would've wanted to hold the ceremony and the party in different places, especially since both Concord and Carlisle are almost like a 2-hour car ride from Cape Cod.

The last article we've gotten so far about them was the Portugal wedding one by Page Six. According to another source, there will be a second wedding in Portugal for her family, which is weird since most of them, those who are really important to her, definitely could've attended the MA one. The source called this one also a "gathering" and didn't even know when it would actually be, just that it was going to be "sometimes this week".

The only constant thing in these articles was "Reps for both actors did not immediately respond to XY's request for comment."

The last article was posted on September 12th, and after that, there was no article, but his friends started posting from Portugal. Other than Dennis, I wouldn't say anybody too interesting posted. It's really weird that the Page Six/People articles stopped before his friends started sharing breadcrumbs that they were all there in PT. So we've seen at least one story shared by at least one of them since that day. I know what some people say: "Maybe they just wanted to share some pictures about the places they had been", which I'd understand if this wasn't supposed to be a private wedding and if they weren't a private couple. I'd assume that Chris had asked them to keep it low, at least until they aren't back in the States, but as of right now, it seems like Chris has asked them exactly the opposite.

My other question about this whole PT thing is why they haven't been spotted by someone. So you want to tell me that Chris is in PT, even after he married someone, and that someone happens to be quite well known in PT, and still nothing? Are they hiding in their hotel room? Are they never going out? Or nobody saw, heard, or witnessed anything wedding-related? Why is nobody seeing or hearing anything?

Something else that is really interesting to me is that only his friends are part of this breadcrumbing. Not the closest ones, or those who've already been part of this like Tara or Chelsea, but those are known enough so people will check their pages and stories, especially since Bryan (the wedding planner, followed by Scott) posted that story of him having drinks with a woman and a man, which started the whole PT wedding fire. It seems like only his friends are "allowed" or rather asked to post something about their whereabouts, so people will keep talking about their PT wedding. I guess Chris only trusts his friends to spread the narrative.

So according to Page Six, the wedding happened on September 9th. To me, this date is also weird. So the article about Pain Hustlers premiering in Toronto came out on July 24.

According to the official site, the premiere would've been on the 11th, so only like 2 days after the wedding and a few days prior to the Portugal one.

However, on the site, there are several events on September 12 and on September 15, so on the Portugal wedding week.

While we only got to know this on July 24, I'm 100% sure Chris and Emily knew way before that they would need to go to TIFF and be there, maybe even before they started organizing a wedding, which is not a few months thing, so they most definitely needed to start doing it much before even the strike started on July 14th.

So on July 14th, Chris and Emily were informed that they probably wouldn't be able to attend TIFF or do any type of press for the movie. The movie comes out on October 27th, and after TIFF, they probably would've needed to do several interviews, and just like with TGM, maybe they also would've needed to attend several red carpet events in the States and in Europe. What I want to say is that I find it very unlikely that this was the original date of their wedding. Maybe they were supposed to get married prior to PH or after (I think I'd rather say after), but why did they change the date? Why? Why were they in such a rush? They had not even 2 months from July 14 to September 9, and by July they probably sent out the invitations, booked a caterer, chellist, violinist, or whatever to the original date, and ordered a cake to that original date. So they called up every person they invited, every person who was involved in the wedding, to let them know they changed the date and the wedding would be earlier? And in this case, we don't even just talk about one wedding, but two. I get that he is a huge star, but I doubt that people would've been really happy about him just casually changing the wedding date since this most definitely wasn't the original one and since he wouldn't and probably couldn't have been able to miss TIFF and his other responsibilities tied to Pain Hustlers.

Page Six also said they are off to their honeymoon after the Portugal wedding, but if this was the original, he couldn't have gone on a honeymoon since he would have had a movie to promote. We don't know where they are going for a honeymoon, but even if they are going with a private plane, they need to stay somewhere, which, again, they probably booked prior to everything, so they would've had a ton of problems with that one too.

It's really interesting that they said they had a private wedding, people needed to sign NDAs, and they couldn't have their phones, yet there were several articles about them almost every single day. I don't think these were actual people who were at the wedding or who knew them; it was most likely his team. It made me really think about why two people who are so in love and happier than ever and just got married need this much traffic and attention, especially when they know that people don't really like them together. I'd assume they would want to keep their marriage to themselves; they don't want people to talk about it and gossip about it because it's something personal and intimate for them. That their friends would help them keep it secret and wouldn't post breadcrumbs that something might be happening. Chris had always been a quiet guy, especially when it came to his romantic relationships. I remember that almost everybody agreed that if he gets married, we probably won't even know that he's been dating someone until after the wedding. Or that he won't even announce anything, that there won't be articles and breadcrumbs, just him appearing with his wife somewhere or mentioning it in an interview. And now here we are, his friends sharing breadcrumbs, several articles out every single day. I'd assume that, just like in the past, he would want to protect his and his partner's privacy, that he would want to keep their personal moments for themselves, especially in this situation when he knows, and both of them know, that a lot of people don't like them being together,and they get a lot of hate, that a lot of people think they look weird, unnatural, and totally not in love. It seems like they are trying to sell the wedding, that they are trying to sell "we are so happy together", but are they trying to convince us or themselves that they are happy together? Because if you need to prove something this much-if you need to prove this hard that you're so happy-then you probably are not.

Bruce: ...

Damian: Tt. Fine. A boy on the tennis team at Gotham Academy has once again insulted your honour. I know you told me to ignore such jests... but it seems my silence has only emboldened

Bruce: <Sighs> As much as I appreciate the thought, what exactly are you intending?

Damian: I wish to learn from the greatest tennis masters of the world, so I may utterly obliterate this fool and render him an example. Do not worry, this will be a wholly non-lethal defeat; in fact the reason I wish to learn from tennis masters despite my vast array of applicable skill is so that a single of my moves could be deemed an attack. I must adopt the stance, heart and finesse of tennis.

Bruce: <Blinks> I... see.

Damian: So... will you grant me your blessing and monetary support for this endeavour to defend the honour of both yourself and our family?

Bruce: Have you tried talking to anyone that this boy makes you feel uncomfortable?

Damian: I am not uncomfortable, I am peeved. And for your information, I have. The elder brother of a compatriot of mine, Mia Mizoguchi as you might recall her name being, is the captain of this tennis team. However this rival who questions our family's honour is a cunning sort, I will grant him that. He has done well to keep his slander amongst friendly ears, and action anything which could justify punitive action from his superiors.

Bruce: Hm. Seems like you're in a bit of a tough one from the sounds of it.

Damian: Indeed. Defeating him in his sport of passion will not only publicly humiliate him, but also remind him of the strength of our family.

Bruce: While I... suppose I can see your logic there. But I think you're forgetting a key detail.

Damian: Which is?

Bruce: This fellow student of yours is not a enemy to vanquish. He's a child, speaking his mind.

Damian: But he voices horrible accusations against your honour! Claims you are a "mindless playboy", and that my adoptive siblings and I are your illegitimate children of various women whom you were forced by the courts to care for, and that you are a drunkard, and are a bad role model.

Bruce: I understand why hearing all that upsets you, and that is perfectly fine. As I said, I appreciate how much you care about my... honour. But devoting yourself defeating him in tennis isn't the answer.

Damian: <Huffs and crosses arms with incredulous expression> Then what is, father? Shall I just continue to hold my tongue?

Bruce: I want you to enjoy school, not treat it like another battlefield. If this boy is really being this bad, then there's other ways to deal with him. You're smart, and you got good friends such as the Mizoguchi girl you mentioned. Bring attention that he's crossing a line... and if that does not work, tell me; and I can handle it through the proper channels.

Damian: Tt. Fine. I will... try once more to expose him and his lies.

Bruce: Good. On a related note... I understand that Mia Mizoguchi has been causing you to grow interested in Serpents & Spells? <Takes out S&S Guidebook> I got this for you, so you don't have to keep borrowing hers. This seems like something you'd much rather be spending your time on compared to avenging my honour in tennis.

Damian: <Blinks> I... uh... thank you, father. Uh... I must go now and... contact Mizoguchi that I will reconsider her invitation for a lunchtime tabletop one-shot.

Bruce: Good. Have fun, son.

Damian: I… will. Thank you once again, father.

okay, so I have a lot of favorite fics (I dare you to look at my bookmarks on ao3), but my favorites and my favorite recommendations are two VERY different things. so I’ll give you a little of both.

ALSO- I NEVER RECOMMEND WIPS. NOT BECAUSE I DON’T LIKE THEM, NOT BECAUSE SOME OF THEM AREN’T THE GREATEST THING TO GRACE THIS EARTH SINCE CHOCOLATE, BUT BECAUSE I WOULD HATE IF SOMEONE DID THAT TO ME. SORRY NOT SORRY.

WHAT I WOULD RECOMMEND OF MY FAVORITES (marvel and rw&rb edition):

it’ll be over (and I’ll still be asking when) by JBS_Forever- a literal masterpiece retelling of the typical irondad and spiderson relationship, honestly. tony’s a little ooc, but the way they wrote peter??? genius. inspired. would definitely recommend.

it’s the thing we’re missing most by lavenade- one of my favorite depictions of parkner in the history of ever, it beautifully showcases both the friendship and the relationship. perfect for a feel-good moment.

The Guiding of Death by RayShippouUchila- even if you’re not a winteriron fan (like, at all), it’s still very much a must-read. I make ALL of the exceptions for this one.

you’re stuck in my head (stuck on my heart, stuck on my body) by notcaycepollard- this was my first introduction to sam/bucky, and I have no regrets. their relationship is so gorgeous in this story. an easy favorite.

art of the game by volantium- perfection. harley is glorious, peter is anxious, and they’re perfect for each other. also, natasha.

Words May Fail (The Body Remains) by ladyflowdi- I know this isn’t really a common ship at this point, but you HAVE to read this. non-negotiable. I will find you. you can vent to me about it afterwards.

told you i’m on the way, i’m like an exit away by quidhitch- this might as well be canon, okay? it’s sweet, it’s angst-less, will make you grin so hard your cheeks hurt. I want to give the author a hug of gratitude.

Faster, Higher, Stronger by everwitch- basically follows the actual plot, but make it olympics. also, it’s nice and long. I have no criticisms to give.

Rule Number Nine by clottedcreamfudge- okay, honest moment here- I will unflinchingly recommend literally everything this author has written ever, but this is by far and away my favorite of their works. I’ve read it at least ten times.

We’ll Invite Something In by smc_27- so good. so sweet. also, it’s a little bit fluffier than most rw&rb fics, so if you’re looking for that, this one’s your guy.

When are we going to move past this dismissive, simplistic and frankly rather problematic image of Elizabeth of York? Derek Neal encapsulates what exactly is so troubling about it far better than I could, which I'm quoting below:

“The first Tudor consort is mainly remembered as a dynastic symbol, one element of an equation: York plus Tudor equals peace. In this interpretation, handed down to us by the Tudor chroniclers via Shakespeare, Elizabeth accomplished her most important work, if not without lifting a finger, merely by proffering a finger for a wedding ring.”

We need to stop defining Elizabeth of York by the basic purpose of her marriage and queenship and begin understanding her through the actual practice of her queenship.*

Because the fact of the matter is, Elizabeth of York was a tremendously successful queen. She was an able intercessor, an active administrator of her lands, and a patroness in her own right. We have evidence that Henry listened to her on matters that people often assume he acted alone or only through his mother's advice. She contributed culturally to the court, including festivities and building projects, and played an active and positive role in queenly diplomacy, including but not limited to her involvement in her sisters’ and children’s marriages, her correspondence with the Pope and foreign rulers, and receiving important ambassadors in her husband’s absence**. She may have some discreet influence in some appointments in the Crown Prince's household. In short, Elizabeth of York excelled in spheres of queenship that were both conventional and powerful, because the two could and did co-exist, because medieval queenship was inherently political and the lines between public and private were blurred to the point of non-existence for queens just as they were for kings. As we can clearly see, Elizabeth was not presented as a “trophy wife” any more than literally any queen consort before or after her; she was, in fact, an evidently active and influential queen who greatly inspired both her daughter and her daughter-in-law's queenships respectively.

Furthermore, Elizabeth of York’s position was not a "threat" to her husband. Why would it be? As J.L. Laynesmith (whose reading of Elizabeth I don't agree with either) says, "Identification with Elizabeth of York's kin aided Henry VII in gaining an entire kingdom." The Croyland Chronicle, a contemporary source, likewise emphasizes her importance in cementing Henry VII's position: in Elizabeth "there could be found whatever appeared to be missing in the king's title elsewhere." Elizabeth of York's position, in fact, bolstered Henry VII's kingship, and this extended far beyond his marriage to her. We must remember that while Henry Tudor was Lancastrian in blood and allegiance, his fight for the throne was very much as a Yorkist claimant - specifically, a claimant for Edwardian Yorkists against Richard III's rule (The events of 1483 were a violent conflict within the Yorkist dynasty, not an external threat against the Yorkist dynasty). You could argue that Henry VII's road to the throne was, effectively, as Edward IV's symbolic heir rather than Henry VI's (who was quite irrelevent to the current conflict, tbh): Henry Tudor was the prospective husband of the Yorkist heiress and the 'avenger' of the dead Yorkist Princes. This was the widely recognized interpretation of contemporaries like Croyland and William Caxton*** and was also how he gained the majority of his new support in England which (without discounting his own initiative, actions and clear competence) were essential to both make him a credible threat and ultimately win Bosworth. He relied on several of her father's former councilors as well, ensuring a great deal of continuity between their reigns. In this context, Elizabeth of York's "position" as the Yorkist heiress, cemented by her formal proclamation as Duchess of York, was not a disadvantage to Henry VII but an indispensable advantage to him. Elizabeth herself was aware of this and played an important role in image politics for the new Tudor dynasty: "Her role as a daughter of the house of York was a major aspect of her identity. Whereas her mother and Margaret of Anjou had adopted emblems personal to them...Elizabeth of York used her father's white rose. Other Yorkist emblems such as the sun in splendour and the falcon and fetterlock were also used in Tudor iconography." As you can see, Elizabeth's contribution went far beyond merely standing at Henry's side with a wedding ring; she was actively involved in cementing the image of the Tudor dynasty in her own right, and was equally invested in doing so. In short: Elizabeth of York's "position" was not a threat to her husband’s rule; it was vital to her husband’s rule. In fact, her unique position was so important that, even years later, post-contemporary Tudor depictions gave her a uniquely equal footing to her husband: for example, in the first pageant of the coronation procession for her granddaughter Elizabeth I, Elizabeth of York was depicted as "a stabilising and legitimising force of the dynasty, and, incredibly, as the equal to her husband" - as Lauren Rose Browne herself writes.

You cannot claim that Henry VII needed Elizabeth of York to bolster his kingship and also claim that he shunted her aside because her position was a threat to his kingship. You cannot claim that Henry VII used Elizabeth of York’s Yorkist heritage to his benefit but also claim that he tried to avoid any implication of her royal inheritance. Those are fundamentally contradictory and make very little sense. You're trying to have your cake and eat it too.

Even more baffling is the idea that Elizabeth of York's "popularity" would have somehow been a threat to her husband's authority. She and Henry lived in a world where queens were meant to embody "the feminine element necessary to legitimate sovereignty", to perform their role as Marian-like intercessors on behalf of their subjects, to engage in appropriate charity and almsgiving, and to provide "models of womanhood for the realms' female subjects"****. If Elizabeth of York was "popular" due to the reaction of crowds gathered to watch her coronation, or because of the gifts she was frequently given by her subjects, or because she was hailed as the "most gracious and best beloved Princesses in the world" after her death, her popularity means that Elizabeth was successful as queen and is an indication of how much her queenship supported and endorsed Henry VII's kingship. A popular queen benefitted the King, not the other way around.*****

(What's especially funny about this traditional interpretation is that the only actual way Elizabeth of York's position and popularity could potentially worry Henry and become a genuine "threat" to his authority is if Elizabeth herself was actively opposed to Henry and was using them against him to undermine his rule (for whatever hypothetical reason). Which would automatically indicate agency on her part and ALSO end up contradicting the "trophy wife" image. So....?)

Enough with the traditional patronizing dismissal of Elizabeth of York. Give her the credit she's due.

*What's particularly silly about hyper-focusing on the point/purpose of Elizabeth of York's marriage (a political alliance and dynastic unification) is that fundamentally, its purpose was ultimately no different from the vast majority of other English royal marriage since the Norman conquest (sans, say, her parents'). Most of them were politically arranged and/or politically motivated, just like Henry and Elizabeth's. It would be ridiculous to judge Isabella of France or Philippa of Hainault's lives and queenships solely based on how politically important their marriages were, right? They obviously had an impact apart from that and beyond that. What exactly is different about Elizabeth of York? Admittedly, her and Henry's situation wasn't exactly the same: he needed her as a potential bride to cement his position as a threat to Richard III and as a King of England; and an English princess becoming an English queen consort was unprecedented at that juncture. But ultimately, there's no reason for why Elizabeth of York's entire life and queenship should be defined and decided on the basis of how and why she married Henry VII. She lived for almost two decades after that. It's more than a little frustrating.

**From what I can make out, so much more evidence has luckily survived for Elizabeth of York's diplomatic activities compared to many of her predecessors, and with far more details. I would literally kill to get similarly detailed evidence for Elizabeth Woodville. So it's certainly strange when Elizabeth of York's role in diplomacy is not emphasized more when it comes to her queenship - especially because it is, ultimately, an expected element of queenship which queens were traditionally meant to excel at. My guess is that it's not highlighted as much because it actually gives Elizabeth agency, which historians often refuse to do.

***Edward IV definitely wasn't the first or only one to claim the red dragon (it was used for/used by many others, and some poets used it for Henry himself in the early 1460s). However, at that point in time in England specifically, it would have very much been Edward IV who was most commonly and universally associated with it; after all, he was the one who won the throne and ruled for more than two decades. Its association with Edward IV is also what would have been the most familiar to Caxton, who established himself in England only in the 1470s, and who was a supporter of Edward IV's family (aka: the Woodvilles) during that time. His support of Henry (who he did not know) during this time would have been through that context as well, rather than loyalty to Henry in his own right.

****Obviously, we can recognize how problematic such inherently gendered expectations are now, but contextualization is important.

*****Elizabeth of York's popularity as queen, at least in the beginning, may have been partly due to the fact that she was English princess who grew up in the public eye, was the daughter of a fairly well-liked king, and the fact that her marriage played a vital role in "uniting" the two rival dynasties. So her circumstances probably played a role in her popularity as well. But we shouldn't discount Elizabeth's own affability and charm, nor her evident generosity, nor the fact that however this popularity emerged, it was Elizabeth who maintained it, and it ultimately signified the success of Elizabeth's queenship and bolstered her husband's kingship.

It's so funny to me that Guda's closest non-mash servant is Edmond Dantes the Avenger, due to the way that Avengers function in the overall lore of fate.

According to Angra Mainyu, there are two functional types of avengers: Those born of hate who speak of love, and those born of love who speak of hate. The first, like Angra, were individuals so despised by their communities that they would burn the world down to feel its warmth. To quote Angra, "Those born from hatred speak of love… and they would show compassion after experiencing cruelty." Their other half, the Dantes' of the world, had seen the beauty and love of the world but had been betrayed and torn away from that beauty, fostering extreme resentment.

Both of these forms are inherently obsessive. The former become so obsessed with kindness and love that they constantly seek it, even if it destroys them. They lash out at those who would love them because that is all they know. The latter is obsessed with the target of their vengeance, becoming unreasonable when their target is in their sights (See Salieri and Mozart, Dantes and Mondego, Gorgon and Mankind). According to Angra, neither form can ever transcend humanity because of this obsession.

Its just interesting, the last true human, hands necrotizing from overexertion of mana, psyche frail from the literal countless traumas is closest to the Avenger class. Looking to Guda's first experience at Chaldea, they were immediately thrown into trauma after trauma. They had a great family life, took a job, and got broken by actors infinitely more powerful than themselves. Our class has always been Avenger.

Funny how this alt is supposed to be from the Nopes part where Sothis hijacks Billy's body to get revenge for Jerry ; Nopes Sothis never mentions her dead kids (save for AG) and never expresses a desire to avenge them, she wishes to terminate Agarthans (Barney) for what they did to Jerry, but not for slaughtering her own children.

In Feh proper (her quotes + forging bonds) Sothis is pissed and fights against perceived threats to both her and Billy, but we don't know why she is pissed. It could be from the same Nopes's scene when she wants to avenge Jerry, bcs Billy's accessories are Jerry related.

But in this video of Feh ??? They explain why Sothis is pissed, it's not because Jerry died, but because Nabateans, her very own children, were genocided ?

The one reason/motivation both Fe16, Nopes and even Feh work their hardest to ignore (it's just an infodump with no consequences in VW !), now this video gives it some light and thoughts ????

Like, rip to Jerry, but for the people who made this video, the only reason why Sothis could be totally pissed and willing to off the first peon who looks at her wrong is her ire at the loss of her children ?

They completely retconned the non-character she was in the Fodlan games, to make her react in a more logical way, Rhea BaD or not BaD, the second Sothis has her memories she destroys the Agarthans and their allies, to avenge the children, her children, who were massacred.

By making this video, IS first shows that Sothis genuinely cared about her children and maybe Rhea wasn't completely delusional when she called her a loving mother, second, and more importantly, they just shat on 3/7th of the combined games. Tru Piss!Sothis wouldn't marry Billy after siding with Thales to finish the massacre of Zanado, and Supreme Leader would have also been terminated, even if Sothis had to take over Billy at that point. Ditto for Clout in Golden Shower, if Sothis!Billy is from around, he dies the second the plot arrow crits Rhea. Jury's out on Supreme Bullshit, but I doubt Sothis would be A OK to work for Supreme Leader whose aim is, at times, to make Garreg Mach Rhea's tomb.

And third, only for the lols, where plot reasons prevented them to meet and interact in the Fodlan games and when Sothis being a piece of crap prevented an interaction in the halloween event, Retcon!Sothis finally meets her daughter in this video ! It's a nice nod to last year, F!Rhea believing and wishing she would meet her mother again in Askr, and the video delivers - Sothis, through Billy, protects her !

Of course this content only pops up in a video bcs even Feh in its main game cannot drop such a heavy dump on Fodlan's writing and plotholes, but I wonder what prompted IS to release this video, with this explanation as to why Sothis is angry.

Curtiss SB2C-5 Helldiver

The Helldiver was developed to replace the Douglas SBD Dauntless. It was a much larger aircraft, able to operate from the latest aircraft carriers and carry a considerable array of armament. It featured an internal bomb bay that reduced drag when carrying heavy ordnance. Saddled with demanding requirements set forth by both the U.S. Marines and United States Army Air Forces, the manufacturer incorporated features of a "multi-role" aircraft into the design.

The Model XSB2C-1 prototype initially suffered development issues connected to its Wright R-2600 Twin Cyclone engine and three-bladed propeller; further concerns included structural weaknesses, poor handling, directional instability, and bad stall characteristics. In 1939, a student took a model of the new Curtiss XSB2C-1 to the MIT wind tunnel. Professor of Aeronautical Engineering Otto C. Koppen was quoted as saying, "if they build more than one of these, they are crazy". He was referring to controllability issues with the small vertical tail.

The first prototype made its maiden flight on 18 December 1940. It crashed on 8 February 1941 when its engine failed on approach, but Curtiss was asked to rebuild it. The fuselage was lengthened and a larger tail was fitted, while an autopilot was fitted to help the poor stability. The revised prototype flew again on 20 October 1941, but was destroyed when its wing failed during diving tests on 21 December 1941.

Large-scale production had already been ordered on 29 November 1940, but a large number of modifications were specified for the production model. Fin and rudder area were increased, fuel capacity was increased, self-sealing fuel tanks were added, and the fixed armament was doubled to four 0.50 in (12.7 mm) machine guns in the wings, compared with the prototype's two cowling guns. The SB2C-1 was built with larger fuel tanks, improving its range considerably.

The program suffered so many delays that the Grumman TBF Avenger entered service before the Helldiver, even though the Avenger had begun its development two years later. Nevertheless, production tempo accelerated with production at Columbus, Ohio and two Canadian factories: Fairchild Aircraft Ltd. (Canada), which produced 300 (under the designations XSBF-l, SBF-l, SBF-3, and SBF-4E), and Canadian Car and Foundry, which built 894 (designated SBW-l, SBW-3, SBW-4, SBW-4E, and SBW-5), these models being respectively equivalent to their Curtiss-built counterparts. A total of 7,140 SB2Cs and equivalent models were produced in World War II.

Initially poor handling characteristics and late modifications caused lengthy delays to production and deployment, to the extent that it was investigated by the Truman Committee, which turned in a scathing report. This contributed to the decline of Curtiss as a company. Neither pilots nor aircraft carrier skippers seemed to like it. Nevertheless, the type was faster than the Dauntless, and by the end of the Pacific War, the Helldiver had become the main dive bomber and attack aircraft on USN carriers.

By the time a land-based variant, known as the A-25 Shrike, became available in late 1943, the Western Allied air forces had abandoned dedicated dive-bombers. A majority of A-25s delivered to the US Army Air Forces were transferred to the US Marine Corps, which used the type only in one side campaign and non-combat roles. The British Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force also cancelled substantial orders, retaining only a few aircraft for research purposes.

Nicknames for the aircraft included "Big-Tailed Beast" or just "Beast", "Two-Cee", and "Son-of-a-Bitch 2nd Class"; the latter nickname was derived from the name SB2C and the aircraft's reputation for having difficult handling characteristics.

Story Summary

In post-apocalyptic Crater City, Elijah is attacked by a group of military-grade bots one night, seemingly out of the blue. Once his best friend, Blair, finds out about the attack, he vows to do whatever it takes to avenge Elijah. Whatever it takes. Between the pair’s tumultuous relationship and the dark secrets that lurk around the city, it seems as though there is more to Elijah’s attack than everyone lets on.

Main Characters

Blair (he/him) 23, carjacker "uber" driver. Quit his job as a Computer Hardware Engineer because it was “too boring,” much to his boss’ dismay. Vows to do whatever it takes to avenge his best friend even if that involves getting his hands dirty. Impulsive, charismatic, wears his heart on his sleeve, can be quite vulgar, tends not to take things very seriously. Special ability: can talk someone’s ear off for hours at a time. Quote: “Oh, so you're mad at me because I wanted to avenge my best friend? Excuse me for thinking my best friend’d wanna help me dispose of the body!”

Elijah (he/him) 24, employee at an arcade, electronics store, and a fast food restaurant. After being kicked out of his home at 18, Elijah struggles to make ends meets, and is ultimately threatened to become repurposed after falling into overwhelming debt. Overthinker, blushes easily, non-confrontational, very resourceful, dresses more intimidating than he actually is. Special ability: can drink up to 7 energy drinks in one day. Quote: “Blair, you can't just tell a man—who's clearly out of it—to ‘suck it up’ because the world has already ended!”

Darcy (he/him) 40, mayor of Crater City. Notable for his schemes and cover-ups by media outlets; citizens either love him or hate him. Created specifically for the role to guide humanity out of a second dark age, Darcy will do whatever it takes to fulfill this role, stopping at nothing—or no one. Confident in his success, dramatic, pragmatic, highly intelligent, believes the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. Special ability: very convincing. Quote: “Oh, that struck a nerve? Once I take that toy away from you, I’ll scale you and gut you like a fish. Don’t test me, Blair.”

Frasier (he/him) 37, mayor’s receptionist & assistent. Has ties to very important people. Made an irresistible deal with Darcy that would allow Frasier a way to protect those he loves. Recruited due to his complicated ties to Darcy. Affable, chatty yet reserved, unpredictable, great bargainer, does not settle for less. Special ability: can draw out a lot of information from someone he just met. Quote: “Since it’s so difficult for you to wrap your mind around, let me spell it out for you: our relationship is no more than a business transaction. And I’d like to keep it that way, Darcy.”

Melony (she/her) 39, robotics engineer, founder of Second Chance. Once a little girl captivated by the limitless (yet dangerous) possibilities the now-illegal gene-therapy offered, now a renowned scientists who continues her search for solutions for people like her to have a second chance in the ever-evolving, post-apocalyptic world. Determined, wears lab coats for “the aesthetic,” free spirit, has many clones of herself lying around, often forgets there’s a Board of Ethics. Special ability: has found a way to disable her nerves so that she can experiment on herself. Quote: “You interrupted my breakfast this morning, so I’m going to interrupt your board meeting!”

Rose (she/her) 25, designer or perhaps marketing chief of Second Chance. Recruited due to her ties to Melony and her bold, daring ideas. Elijah’s childhood best friend. Spunky, very big personality, huge empath, competitive, risk-taker, has garnered a lot of respect. Special ability: can effectively translate Blair-isms into layman's terms. Quote: “This is a ludicrous idea! Let’s do it.”

How To Fail At Magic — Dr Strange 2

So many great points in this video essay. It all boils down to this:

Don't pull new powers out of nowhere to do something cool that will never be seen or used again.

Go deep with your worldbuilding, at least for main characters and their primary abilities.

Put limitations and weaknesses on your characters and/or their abilities and use those limitations consistently.

Multiverse of Madness has Wanda casting spells with no physical indication that she is doing anything at all. Total stealth, no visible energy or hand movements despite that being an implied necessity in all other media she appears in (for the MCU.) In scene after scene she does things that are really awesome and cool, but none of it makes sense. If it doesn't make sense, then there can be no stakes for the audience. When every escalation of the danger is an illogical coincidence, a new ability that solves just this one problem perfectly and is never seen or thought of again, or a blatant deus ex machina, then the audience expects that there will be a similar nonsensical or convenient solution for the hero and there is no speculation about how the problem will be solved.

She glows, she moves fingers, her eyes flash... in every movie before this one we know when Wanda is using magic. The only time we don't see it in WandaVision is when the camera cut away from her to hide it!

Brain off, look at the pretty lights. This can make for an entertaining evening at the cinema, but will be forgettable and the complete lack of investment means the audience isn't that hungry for a sequel.

The first Doctor Strange movie had limitations: There is magical energy manipulation, the use of enchanted objects, and complicated rituals. This fit with the magic we'd seen before in the MCU, even for Pietro and Wanda's first appearances (if we consider their mutations due to exposure to the Mind Stone Scepter a kind of ritual.) We know all the abilities and they don't suddenly get added to when there is a challenge to solve, instead existing abilities are used to solve the problems and there is a big emotional payoff for that which we just don't get for deus ex machina problem solving!

So, obviously, that's exactly what we get when Strange saves the day. He dreamwalks into a dead body and gets crazy necromancer powers. The warning about this being a bad idea isn't given to the audience until he's halfway done doing it, and it ends up not as a handicap but as a huge boon before we've even assimilated that this is a risky move. To quote my non-fan family members: "When did [s]he learn to do that, was it in the TV show?"

Marvel does this "hero suddenly has a new power that perfectly solves their problem" a lot, but usually it is a progression or escalation of an existing ability. How did Wanda escape the Mirror dimension and then instantly heal herself from the wounds that caused, but then can't heal anything done to herself later on? Explanations and even the resolution of major plotlines [Looking at you, Sokovia Accords amendments] only ever showing up on the Wiki is just not acceptable for a project like the MCU. At least Thanos spoke to Loki as if he knew the guy in Endgame, so that plot point from Avengers 1, which was leaned on as part of the motivation for Tony Stark creating Ultron, technically made it to film before the both of the effected characters had a heroic sacrifice that vindicated their questionable actions.

It's only a major part of events in 4 films, it's fine if the Loki TV series retcons it away again instead of letting the title character ever explain his point of view or why he did the specific bad things we've seen him do.

So, this is a criticism that hits far more than just Multiverse of Madness, but DS: MoM is the worst offender by far. Not only is the hero doing random things, but so is the villain. Yes, yes it does look cool. It is so cool, but so are fireworks. Meaningless, narrative-free fireworks set off by some neighbor that build to a crescendo to celebrate some accomplishment their favorite person achieved. The details quickly forgotten and the enjoyment fleeting.

The effort to 'resolve' conflict has been abandoned, a search for a just peace abandoned - in favour of containment and dehumanisation and an unceasing spiral of violence.

Watching the tragedy unfold in Israel and Palestine has sometimes felt like reading the Oresteia backwards. A trilogy of plays by Aeschylus, written in the fifth century BC, the Oresteia tells of the transformation of ancient Greece from a society rooted in blood and revenge into one shaped by justice.

The Oresteia begins with the return home from the Trojan war of Agamemnon, the leader of the triumphant Greeks. He is brutally murdered by his wife, Clytemnestra, in furious revenge for his having ritually sacrificed their daughter Iphigenia on the eve of conflict to placate the gods.

To avenge his father, Agamemnon’s son, Orestes, kills Clytemnestra. Pursued by the Furies, ancient deities whose role is to exact vengeance for major sins, he seeks refuge in Athens. The goddess of wisdom, Athena, convenes a jury to try Orestes. With the jury split, Athena votes in favour of acquittal, and in so doing opens up the possibilities of a world beyond that governed by the Furies.

The Oresteia is a complex work engaging in issues from patriarchy to democracy. The human condition, for Aeschylus, was tragic, with Agamemnon, Clytemnestra and Orestes all facing impossible choices. Part of the process by which humans civilise themselves and learn to live with the tragedy of their condition is, he suggests, in forging the distinction between vengeance and justice. Justice brings us into the sphere of politics and allows for the possibility of reasoned change and redemption.

The irony today is that the relationship between Israel and the Palestinians seems to be moving in the opposite direction, into a world defined more by the Furies than by Athena. A world in which the erosion of political solutions to the conflict has led to the pursuit of vengeance dominating the search for justice.

This is most clearly visible in Hamas’s savagery. The organisation is not, as some on the left view it, an expression of Palestinian resistance but of the degeneration of that resistance, of “lost hope that moral strategies can succeed”, in the words of the American writer Peter Beinart.

Under Hamas’s rule, opponents are brutally dispatched, women’s rights denied, gay people tortured and murdered. Even given the impact of the Israeli blockade, Gaza’s rulers have done little to advance the lives of Gazans. The Hamas imagination is sustained less by a vision of Palestinian freedom than by a hatred of Israel and of Jews.

Those who celebrate Hamas’s actions as “resistance”, and imagine that butchering Israeli civilians is what “decolonisation” looks like, have a wretched view of Palestinian rights. It is also a perspective that, in diminishing the value of Israeli lives, only encourages the growth of antisemitism.

The dehumanisation of the “other”, and the desire for revenge over justice, is a feature not simply of Hamas policy. It is woven into Israeli perspectives, too, and from the very top.

The “entire nation” of Palestine, Israel’s President Isaac Herzog claimed, “is responsible” for Hamas’s crimes. Israel’s heritage minister, Amichai Eliyahu, has written of Gaza, approvingly quoting a soldier: “Blow up and flatten everything. Simply a delight for the eyes.” Galit Distal Atbaryan, Likud MP and, until two weeks ago, Israel’s minister for public diplomacy, demanded the “erasing of Gaza”, adding: “Revengeful and vicious IDF [Israeli Defence Forces] is needed here. Anything less than that is immoral.”

This is the language of the Furies, not of Athena, and backed by immense military hardware. It is the language, too, of many western supporters of Israel. US congressman Brian Mast, speaking during a debate on his attempt to slow down humanitarian aid to Gaza, dismissed the idea of “innocent Palestinian civilians”, claiming, “I don’t think we would so lightly throw around the term innocent Nazi civilians”.

Not just Israeli rhetoric, but also military strategy has shifted. Beginning with bombing campaigns on Lebanon in the 1990s, Wendy Pearlman and Boaz Atzili observe in their book Triadic Coercion, Israeli leaders came to see military action as possessing “inherent rather than instrumental utility”, with the use of “indiscriminate and brute force” justified on “moral as much as strategic” grounds. This is what Gazans now face.

Israel has sought not to find political solutions to the Palestinian conflict but to contain and manage it. It has cynically helped nurture Hamas, Benjamin Netanyahu in particular propping it up as an obstacle to an independent Palestine. “To prevent the option of two states,” Israeli general turned academic researcher Gershon Hacohen has observed, “he is turning Hamas into his closest partner. Openly Hamas is an enemy. Covertly, it’s an ally.” Israel is wreaking devastation in Gaza in pursuit of a monster it helped spawn.

While there has rightly been much criticism of leftwing voices celebrating the Hamas attack, far less has been said about the immensely more powerful political figures promoting incendiary, dehumanising rhetoric in the name of defending Israel, and the role of such rhetoric in justifying atrocities in Gaza. Instead, in Europe and America there is a concerted effort to marginalise pro-Palestinian sentiments.

In France, demonstrations supporting Palestinians have been banned, while a proposed new law would make it a criminal offence to insult Israel. In Germany, as an open letter from Jewish writers, artists and academics observes, in areas with large Turkish and Arab communities, “armoured vans and squads of armed riot police patrol the streets searching for any spontaneous showing of Palestinian support or symbols of Palestinian identity”. In America, those expressing pro-Palestinian sentiments have faced the sack.

In Britain, the home secretary, Suella Braverman, has suggested that waving a Palestinian flag could be seen as a criminal offence, and that “not just explicit pro-Hamas symbols and chants … are cause for concern”. The science minister, Michelle Donelan, a self-proclaimed champion of free speech in universities, has singled out two academics for censure for their views on Israel and the Gaza conflict.

There is more here than simply hypocrisy about free speech. It is an attempt to reframe the Gazan conflict as a moral, rather than political, issue, and to delegitimise Palestinian perspectives, an approach that can only make political engagement on a difficult terrain even more intractible.

“Where will it end? Where will it sink to sleep and rest, this murderous hate, this Fury?”, the Chorus asks at the end of The Choephori, the second play in the Oresteia trilogy, after Orestes kills Clytemnestra. Today, the answer depends on whether we, and political leaders in Israel, Palestine and the west, wish to listen to the Furies or to Athena.
