Unwanted, Chapter 1: Unarmed, Pt. 1
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Avenger!Fem!Reader
Summary: (For this part only) Following the events of CA:CW, Tony Stark has offered Steve Rogers an olive branch of sorts to bring The Avengers back together. You, CTO of Stark Industries and head of Innovation & Technology for the Avengers' Initiative, have your doubts, as you're not quite ready to forgive Captain America for ripping your family apart just yet. Steve had one condition, however, when agreeing to return to the team, one that's going to turn your life upside down and inside out: If he's coming back to join The Avengers, he's bringing his best friend, Bucky Barnes, with him.
Warnings: (For this part only) Language (obviously), minor mention of alcohol, I'm obviously on Team Tony during the CW; don't come for me, awful jokes, minor use of (Y/N). As always, if I missed any, please let me know.
Word Count: 3.2k
A/N: Here's a little preview of Unwanted. In it's current form, it's standing at about 50k words, with about 25k still in editing, and I'm maybe about half done with writing the entire thing? I'm not going to lie, it starts out cute and fluffy, but it's gonna get real angsty and painful. Dear Reader has unresolved emotional trauma and Bucky doesn't understand the importance of boundaries in 21st century relationships. This piece has been my baby for several months now; I really hope ya'll enjoy reading it as much as I've enjoyed writing it! Banner By: The absolutely amazing @mrsbuckybarnes1917

"You're sure you're cool with this, Boss?" you asked Tony Stark, for what was probably the ten thousandth time in the last hour. The two of you were sitting by yourselves off in a corner of the common area of the Avengers Tower while the rest of your team congregated around the bar, eagerly anticipating the official return of Captain America to the Avengers. That, by itself, would be enough to warrant a gathering of Earth's mightiest heroes, but what had everyone in attendance talking was the fact that Steve Rogers wouldn't be returning alone.
Your billionaire employer sighed and swirled his glass of Laphroaig, the amber liquid sloshing along the sides of the tumbler. "I don't love it, Pocket, but it was Cap's only condition for coming back into the fold, and since Barton, Wilson, and Maximoff all went off the reservation with him, it seemed a small price to pay to get everyone back under one roof." He took a swig of his whiskey and smacked his lips.
You couldn't help but smile at his use of your nickname. Thor had inadvertently given it to you when you first met the God of Thunder years ago, remarking for everyone to hear that you were so small and tiny, he could tuck you into his pocket and abscond away with you to Asgard. Somehow, it stuck. You'd hated it at first; it had felt dismissive and condescending, which of course meant that it soon became the only thing the members of your team called you, but the more they used in their daily lives, the more you actually came to love it. It was a brand new, unique identity that came to embody the person you’d become, and the past you’d worked so hard to put behind you. You were more likely to answer to 'Pocket,' now, than you were your legal name, and you were grateful for it.
"Besides," Tony continued with a shrug, "if letting the Barnes thing go means we get the band back together, I'm willing to be the bigger person about it."
You stared at him, impressed. "Well look at you. When did you get so emotionally evolved?"
"Since Pepper told me I needed to start seeing a therapist or she’d leave me once and for all," he admitted to you with a cheeky wink; you both knew that, though Tony drove his partner, Pepper Potts, absolutely insane sometimes, she loved him far too much to ever walk away from him for good. That didn’t stop the threats, though. Lord knows he tried her patience. In your opinion, the woman was a saint.
Your eyes widened at the revelation and you let out a low whistle of appreciation. "You're going to therapy? Wow. Tony, That's amazing. I'm proud of you."
"Oh please," Tony scoffed, "I have much more important things to do than sit on a couch and spill my feelings. Besides, my secrets are too valuable to divulge to an actual human being. I just trained FRIDAY on therapeutic conversational datasets so she can handle all that psychological mumbo jumbo and then I paired that with BARF's augmented reality-- it's seriously the platinum standard in mental healthcare. No awkward silences or judgmental stares, just pure efficiency. You should try it; it’d do you wonders. And the best part? No copays."
You chuckled as you took a sip of your pineapple and Malibu. "Yeah, okay. That completely tracks for you," you told him with a smile. "So, what did Dr. FRIDAY tell you that got you to change your mind about the Barnes situation?"
Furrows appeared between Tony's eyebrows as he took another sip of whiskey to buy time for collecting his thoughts. There was still so much pain in him where Bucky Barnes was concerned. You'd worked for him in some capacity for nearly fifteen years and you'd never seen him as defeated as he'd been when he got off that Quinjet from Siberia. He'd been bloodied, battered and utterly broken, body and soul. Seeing him like that had shattered you, and you never wanted to live through something like that again.
Tony ran you through his experience with his therapeutic innovation, and you had to admit, it was impressive. The system had helped him realize that Bucky Barnes wasn't responsible for the heinous crimes Hydra had brainwashed him into completing, and so his anger over the death of his parents, while justified, had been misdirected.
"Once I processed that, it was a quick jump to realizing we can't be the best version of the Avengers if we only have half the team at home, and it's innocent people who would pay the price for it. So, when I reached out to Cap and he agreed to come back if I agreed to let him bring Barnes with him, well..." Tony trailed off, gesturing vaguely with his hand toward the where the rest of the team was waiting.
"So, you and Rogers are just, what? Good then? All water under the bridge?" you asked him, mild irritation clouding your voice.
"Oh, absolutely not." Tony took another sip of whiskey. "I can work with him again, and I'm glad to, but we're not going to be braiding each other's hair anytime soon."
"Good," you said, raising your glass in a mock toast to Tony. "I'm not quite ready to forgive him on your behalf just yet." Tony had essentially saved your life when you first met him, and he’d continued to support and guide your career to heights you could have never imagined. You'd started as a systems analyst and mechanical engineer at Stark Industries fresh out of college, and under Tony’s mentorship, it wasn’t long before you found yourself rising to the position of the company’s Chief Technical Officer, second in command only to Pepper, now that Tony had passed on the reins to her. All this happened long before he'd ever brought you in to work with him on the Avengers Initiative, and now you spent the majority of your time heading up their Technology and Innovation Department, as well.
Any kind of healthy respect you might have had for your boss had died out a long, long time ago, because Tony Stark  was Tony Stark, but now he was just Tony-- more like an annoying older brother you loved dearly,  whose name just happened to be on your paychecks. You owed him everything and that had earned him your unwavering loyalty. You'd follow him to hell and back again if he asked it of you, though he knew he’d never have to; you’d be paving the path there right alongside him.
The sound of laughter made its way across to you from the other side of the room and you felt warmth at the sound-- everyone, together again and happy. Just a few short months ago, you never would have been able to imagine the scene before you, not after the fight in Berlin and its brutal aftermath. You had thought for sure that this little family you'd found yourself in the middle of had been destroyed beyond repair.
So, you might have had your own reasons to be pissed at Steve Rogers.
"What's Barnes like?" you asked Tony. Having only ever glimpsed him from a distance, or from behind a computer monitor, you'd utilized all the resources at your disposal to dig up as much information on the Winter Soldier as possible, but even your skills hadn't been able to get you what simply didn't exist. "You know I don't like unknown quantities."
Tony seemed to think for a moment. "You mean, aside from being a brainwashed, murderous assassin?"
"Tony," you chastised. You knew that Barnes had spent a good deal of time in Wakanda before coming home to New York, working on having the words that triggered his homicidal alter-ego neutralized. Rogers may not always acted rationally when it came to making decisions about his oldest friend, but you were sure he wouldn’t be bringing Barnes back to the Tower if he posed a serious danger to the rest of you. Right?
"Fine," Tony said, with a typical exaggerated sigh. "Aside from being a former brainwashed, murderous assassin; better?" You rolled your eyes but nodded. "Don't really know, didn't care enough to ask. I'll be happy as long as he doesn't start murdering us all in our sleep. Cap vouches for him, so that counts for something. Maybe not as much as it did once upon a time, but something. But T’Challa seems to think he’s harmless enough now, so that’s good enough for me."
You nodded, taking another sip of your pineapple and Malibu, then leaned back, pensive. "Oh, God," you said after a moment of thought, sitting up in alarm. "You don't think it’s going to be like having an entire extra Rogers around, do you? All '40s morality and emotional repression? Because I am so over having him police my language." It wasn't that you had anything against Captain America as an Avenger, but there was only so much of the Boy Scout act you could take before you started getting nauseous. And okay, fine, you weren't too proud to admit it-- there was a not-so-small part of you that still hadn't forgiven him for what you saw as his blatant betrayal of Tony when he refused to sign the Accords. You'd promised to play nice, though, for the sake of your family, but your personal relationship with The Star-Spangled Man had taken heavy damage since Berlin.
Tony chuckled. "As if you'd ever let Cap's presence keep you from a good profanity. I should put out a swear jar. We could fund that crisis algorithm project of yours off your mouth alone."
"Fuck you, Tony," you uttered with a chuckle, fully aware that he had your number. You never met a four-letter word you didn’t fall immediately in love with.
"And look at that," Tony said with a smirk, "I just made another dollar. Hey FRIDAY, open up a new savings account and deposit a dollar into every time Pocket has a potty mouth."
"On it, Boss," the AI replied cheerfully.
You swore at Tony a few more times for good measure. "I fully intend to financially bleed you dry now, asshole."
"Oh no, I'm shaking in my custom Tom Ford's," Tony mockingly bemoaned, putting his feet, enclosed in the aforementioned ridiculously expensive loafers, up on the coffee table.
Raised voices from the other side of the room caught your attention. You stood up and craned your neck, trying to see what had caused the commotion. "I think they're here, Boss," you said.
"Alright," Tony said, standing up and putting an arm around your shoulder, "big smiles, kiddo. Remember, we're supposed to be happy about this." You suppressed a chuckle as you watched Rogers present Bucky Barnes to the rest of the team. Everyone was welcoming; you wouldn’t have expected any less, but as you watched their body language, the only word that came to mind was guarded. And you completely understood; The Winter Soldier’s reputation had preceded him, after all. There were hugs for Rogers, of course, but no one made any attempt to reach out to his friend.
Despite your overall annoyance with Rogers, you couldn't help but feel some degree of happiness for the giant oaf. When you'd been assigned on a mission with him (which happened fairly frequently, as he was so pathetically abysmal with anything having to do with technology) and ended up having to hole up in a safehouse for an extra couple of days while waiting for extraction, he'd started opening up to you about James Buchanan Barnes, and the reminiscing had made him so happy, you encouraged Steve to tell you everything about this Bucky. After that, the trouble was getting Rogers to stop telling his Bucky stories. If he wasn't sharing tales about growing up with his best friend during the Great Depression and all the absolute mischief they got into, he was sharing war stories of their time together with the Howling Commandos. He'd even shared his grief with you– how painful it had been to watch Barnes fall from that train and the guilt he carried for not being able to save him. He’d confessed to you once that, when he went into the ice, fully prepared to die, there was a part of him that was relieved to be reunited with Barnes in the next life, and waking up some 70 years later to a world where he was still alive but Bucky was still gone had broken his heart all over again. And yet, here they were– together in the next life, after all. If you were a different kind of person, you’d say it was a goddamn miracle.
Because of the way Rogers described his best friend in those old stories, you were expecting Bucky Barnes to come swaggering along next to him, with a cocksure tilt to his head and a panty-dropping smirk playing along his lips, but the man who accompanied Steve was the furthest thing from that.
He shuffled behind Rogers slowly, looking at the floor and avoiding making eye contact with anyone else from the team. His hair hung long and limp, curtaining off his face as though it were a protective barrier. Though, if it was keeping him away from everyone else, or everyone else away from him, you couldn't be sure. He was much thinner than you'd anticipated, especially for a super soldier– though still extremely muscular, giving you the impression that it had been a long time since he'd let himself indulge in anything more than the bare minimum amount of calories he needed for survival. Tilting your head, you tried to steal a glance at his infamous metal arm, the thing of legends that had turned him from a run-of-the-mill assassin into the stuff of waking nightmares.
But the sleeve of his jacket hung limp, only empty space where the appendage should have been.
Curious. He'd come to Tony Stark's home unarmed. Your hand flew to your mouth to try and stop the uncontrollable snicker that broke loose at your own stupid joke. Tony elbowed you gently in the ribs to shut you up, and you hoped you were too far away and the others too distracted by Steve's introductions to notice you, but that thought flew right out the window when Bucky Barnes' head snapped up at the sound, his eyes locking onto yours from across the room.
"Holy shit," you breathed, knowing another dollar would go into Tony's digital swear jar, but damn if the man didn't have the most striking blue eyes you had ever seen. There were dark circles under them, and he looked incredibly tired, yeah, but they were beautiful. You didn't mean to stare, but you found you couldn't look away, either, and so the two of you were locked into some sort of impromptu staring contest. The longer you looked at him, the more you could sense an overwhelming sadness coming from him, as well as a level of wariness at being in a room full of strangers. It was almost overwhelming.
But then, just as suddenly as it began, the spell was broken. Blinking once, Bucky looked away and you felt the tension vanish from between you.
"What was that about?" Tony asked you in a low singsong voice.
"I have no idea," you answered, honestly. There had been so much pain and loneliness in his eyes. You'd seen eyes like that before, when you were younger and looked at your own reflection in the mirror following a scalding shower with your skin scrubbed raw and bloody. You suppressed a shiver.
Finally, Steve managed to disengage himself and Bucky from the other Avengers and began making his way toward you and Tony. Up close, you were struck by how tall Bucky was. He had to be at least a foot taller than you, if not more. And God, he was handsome. Granted, in a kind of heroin-chic sort of way, but still. A couple of good nights' sleep, a few good meals, some light personal grooming, and... well, there was a very good chance you were going to be in trouble once he got his shit together, that was for sure.
"And Buck," Steve was saying, drawing you out of your ogling, "This is our resident computer genius, Pocket (Y/L/N). You ever need help with anything technology-related, she's your girl."
"A bit of an over-simplified version, Rogers," you said, sticking your hand out to shake Bucky’s, "but yeah, that about covers it."
Bucky looked at you, then down at your hand, making no move to take it.
"What the hell kind of name is Pocket?" he asked, voice rough as though he hadn’t been using it a lot. Pulling your hand back, you shot him an annoyed glare.
"I don't know," you oozed back sarcastically. "What the hell kind of name is Bucky?"
"It's his nickname, Pocket," Steve supplied helpfully, though not without a trace of confusion. You gave him an annoyed, pointed look.
"No shit, Rogers." You turned back to Bucky and spoke slowly, as if to a child. "So, what do you think Pocket is, then?"
"Oh," said Bucky, catching on. The corners of his mouth turned up ever so slightly. "Gotcha; m'sorry about that. My manners are rusty from a severe lack of use."
You didn't mean it, but your mouth curved up into a hint of a smile, too. And then, almost as if you couldn't stop yourself from doing it, you found yourself saying "I see you've arrived unarmed."
There was a long, heavy beat of silence as Steve and Tony stared at you, mouths slightly agape, and you wondered if you'd made a critical error. You were just about to punch yourself in the face and claim you had a concussion and therefore couldn't be held responsible for what you said when Bucky burst into laughter.
It was the most beautiful sound you'd ever heard, and it was contagious. Through your own laughter, you risked a glance up at Steve. He was looking back and forth between you and Bucky, an indiscernible look in his eyes, and you couldn't help but wonder how long it had been since he'd heard his best friend laugh. Hell, you wondered how long it had been since Bucky Barnes had laughed at all.
"Pocket," Tony groaned, palming his face, "that was truly terrible, even for you."
"I'm sorry," you said, trying to catch your breath through your burst of giggles. "It just slipped out-- I couldn’t help it. You know once these things come into my head, they just bounce around in there until they fall out. I didn't mean it."
Steve smiled at you. "So that's what you were snickering at," he said, amused. Damn that enhanced super soldier hearing. Rogers didn't need to be so nosy with it.
You shrugged. "What can I say? Bad jokes are my superpower. Don't be jealous that all you got was super strength and a six pack, Rogers."
Bucky laughed again, then nudged Steve playfully with his elbow. "I like this one, Stevie," he said. "She's funny."
You weren't sure why, exactly, but something in Bucky's words turned your insides into a warm puddle of goo.
Oh, you were going to be in trouble, indeed.

Romance Tropes with Marvel Characters
Pairing: Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson, Natasha Romanoff, Clint Barton, Thor, Loki, Tony Stark, Kate Bishop, Peter Parker x Reader
Tags: fluff, enemies to lovers, kissing, sleeping around, doubt, confession, teasing
A/N: Back with my favorite romance tropes. God there are a lot of these.
STEVE ROGERS + LAST TO KNOW
You and everyone around you know that there's feelings between the two of you, everyone but Steve himself. He's not dumb, far from it but when it comes to romance you need to be really direct with him because subtlety has been getting you nowhere really fast and you needed to fix that. You need clear, blatant flirting, you need to wink at him, you need to tell him you like the things he does, that you like him point blank. Once he gets that he will take the gentleman route and ask you on a date.
BUCKY BARES + NOT GOOD ENOUGH
Bucky feels like there's flaws in everything he does with you, that somehow he will end up messing things up no matter how well he plans them out. His whole life has been a series of mistakes and accidents. While he knows for a fact that you're not that for him he wants to work extra hard to make sure you're not making a mistake by dating him. If only he knew that who he was was already good enough, that he is already your perfect someone. And all his imperfections are also part of why you love him.
SAM WILSON + SECRET ADMIERER
Pines over you for a good long while. Sam really wants to make sure you like him before he makes his real move so he does things like live flowers and little cute gifts in your locker. It has so be someone from the team but you don't figure out who until you catch him on his way from the flower shop, with the exact flowers appearing in your locker for the past month. Doesn't take a genius to figure it out. And since you already did and seemed t be happy with his gifts he might as well confess right now, with flowers in hand.
NATASHA ROMANOFF + BEST FRIEND'S SIBLING
Natasha is always there when you go to visit Yelena and she's always teasing you. This is much to Yelena's annoyance because she knows you like Natasha too. You never get too flirty when you're in the company of others but over the phone is a different story. When you become a couple Natasha jokes about you becoming Yelena's new sibling, something which Yelena is jokingly appalled by. Natasha is the type of person to make kissy noises at you just to annoy her little sister.
CLINT BARTON + AFRAID TO COMMIT
You and Clint have had a casual on and off relationship for years. When things are about to get serious he breaks it off, saying he needs time to think about it but you never seem to move on from this one spot. While frustrating you know why that is, he's already lost his family once, he doesn't want to risk losing someone he's grown to care so much about. He would rather that he didn't start to care, that it was casual but it's not and he does care, and that's why he's scared of opening up to you further.
THOR + PROTECTOR
For such a big guy Thor can be real cagey with his romantic feelings. He will flirt for sure, he'll even try to sleep with you but he will always maintain his status as your protective best friend. In fact he will even go so far as to say that the reason he's so flirty is because he's protecting you from other people who have bothered you before. While you can appreciate that he could do all of that too if he admitted to himself that he wanted to be your boyfriend. Was it really that easy? Was he really overthinking things for once?
LOKI + OLD ENEMIES
You and Loki go way back as enemies, even the most petty things you had to argue about and see who will come out on top. That attitude eventually transferred over to the bedroom but you never stopped being enemies. You're always at each other's throats when you see each other and then pretend like you don't think about each other when you're not fighting. There's never a confession that happens between you two because there's nothing to confess, you already know that you love to hate each other.
TONY STARK + SLEEPS WITH EVERYONE BUT YOU
Being the playboy that caught feelings for you of course Tony isn't gonna make it worse by sleeping with you. He wants to so bad but once he does there would be no running from his feelings anymore. So he sleeps with other people, however he doesn't brag about it like usual, not to you anyway, but you know. Eventually it stops working, he can't stay away from you anymore. But he doesn't want to sleep with you and then confess, he has to take you out on a date, kiss you, confess and then if you still want him, sleep with you.
KATE BISHOP + FRIENDS TO LOVERS
No amount of superhero work can rip Kate away from her best friend. You bet she tells you who she is from the simple fact that she knows you'll keep it a secret and because you're used to people being after her because of her money. Sleepovers are a regular thing with the two of you, as are cuddles, kisses though... those are a bit new. She panicked when she kissed you, said it was an accident. How could it be though when you wanted it to happen too? And what if you'd like for it to happen again?
PETER PARKER + OBLIVIOUS TO LOVE
As much as he is a genius, Peter can be a little oblivious to romance. Okay, very oblivious. He's an awkward guy and he rarely makes the first move. But if you can show him that you're really into him... no he won't get it. You need to be the one to ask him out on a date. Then he will put his best foot forward and make sure you are swept off your feet. He might have been oblivious at first but not anymore, he's starting to pick up on your little cute flirting, and more importantly he's starting to flirt back.

You And I Were Fireworks [Proposal Gone Wrong Trope]
Pairing: Sam Wilson x Female Reader
Trope de Sept Masterlist | Main Masterlist
Tumblr media
Proposal Gone Wrong situation 1. Character wants to propose. Something goes awry and ruins their plan "AJ is determined to make you his Aunt, without giving Sam a say in the matter."
Warnings: Fluff. Reader is fem identifying (references to she/her pronouns and being Cass and AJ’s Aunt.) No use of y/n. Established relationship.
WC: 1,100
*I never give permission for my fics, manips, or any other original creation I post on this site to be copied, posted elsewhere, translated, or fed into any AI program. The only platform I currently post anything on is Tumblr. Thanks!*
Spending the Fourth of July with Sam’s family in Louisiana had become one of your favorite traditions of your relationship in the few years since you and Sam had started dating. It was only fitting that Sam's hometown threw a true American neighborhood cookout on the pier, proud of the local-bred boy who had taken up the mantle of Captain America.
You had just finished helping Sarah and a few of the other neighbors set up the tents on the dock, when you noticed Sam’s youngest nephew sitting alone on the edge of the pier. You wandered over and plopped down beside him.
“What’s up AJ? You look upset. Did Bucky and Cass not let you play corn hole with them?”
“No…” the boy said, dejected.
“Okay, so what’s up?”
“Leon asked who I was here with and I said my Aunt and Uncle, but he said you’re not really my Aunt cause you and Uncle Sam aren’t married.” he gestured to the man named Leon a few feet away, putting beer and soda into a cooler.
“Well, I mean he’s not wrong. But don’t worry AJ, I love you like you already are my nephew. Your mom and brother have been nothing but welcoming since Sam and I started dating and I really do feel like family.”
“But why aren’t you and Uncle Sam married yet?”
“Because he hasn’t asked me yet! He’s gotta propose first. Quit dragging his feet, you know?” you joked and it made AJ chuckle “And besides, we’re both pretty busy and weddings take time to plan. But, hey you’re gonna look great in a suit when you’re a groomsman.”
“You really think Uncle Sam is gonna make me a groomsman?”
“I know he will. Now come on, quit worrying about what Leon has to say and go enjoy the party.”
The conversation left your mind until a few hours later when you were all sitting around a picnic table enjoying your cookout food. Sarah and Sam were discussing upgrades they wanted to make to the boat when fall rolled around, and Cass and Bucky were in heated competition to see who could make the Ketchup containers make the loudest fart noise.
AJ slid onto the bench beside you as you ate.
“Hey AJ, you doing better?”
“Yes. But I have a question.” he cleared his throat, getting the attention of everyone at the table.
AJ dropped to one knee beside you and held out a makeshift ring he clearly had just fashioned from some straw wrappers.
“Will you marry my Uncle Sam?”
“AJ!” Sarah exclaimed
“Oh god no.” Sam buried his head in his hands
“Oh god yes.” Bucky said, fully invested
“AJ, is this you asking because you want me to be your Aunt or did your Uncle put you up to this?” you asked
“No! It's me trying to make this happen! What you said was right. Uncle Sam needs to stop dragging his feet and make you part of the family. So I figured I’d make him do it!” AJ said triumphant in his plan
“Wait what?!” Sam’s head shot up
“AJ that was… I meant that as a joke.” you stuttered
Sarah clapped her hands together and stood.
“Okay kiddo, let’s quit interfering in Uncle Sam’s personal life. C’mon you can help me get the snow cone station set up.”
“But mom, she didn’t answer!” he said as Sarah tugged him away from the table
“Wow that was…” Bucky began to chuckle
“So when did you tell him I'm dragging my feet?” Sam turned to you and asked
“I did not… I meant it as a joke okay?!”
“Uh huh, sure…” he joked, putting his arm around you and kissing your temple
It felt like that was all you saw of Sam the rest of the day, he kept busy socializing with his old neighbors and friends. You knew Sam was always the life of the party, but a small part of you worried he was just avoiding you because of what happened earlier.
Finally, the sun finally set and the fireworks started. You sat on the edge of the pier, feet dangling in the warm summer water as streaks of red and blue exploded above you.
You felt a presence near you, as Sam sat behind you to enjoy the show as well, legs bracketed on either side of you as he wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled your back to his chest, planting a kiss on your neck once he was situated.
“Hey beautiful.” he greeted you
“Hey Sammy.”
The two of you sat in silence as the show continued, until Sam finally spoke up.
“What was your answer by the way?”
“What?”
“To AJ’s question. What was your answer?”
“Sam, you know it would be a yes if you asked. Why? Is AJ giving you ideas?”
“No, I can do ideas myself, problem is he beat me to it.”
“Wait, what?”
Sam removed one hand from around your waist and held it in front of you, a beautiful diamond ring in his palm.
“Little trickster ruined my big moment. But the question’s still the same. Marry me?”
“Sam…” you craned your neck to look at him, the smile splashed across his face showing he was being serious
The emotion hit you in a wave and all you could do was nod yes, not able to verbally answer or else you were sure the tears of joy would never stop. Sam leaned in and kissed you deeply, untwisting his arms from around your middle to help you put the ring on your finger.
“It’s perfect by the way.” You commented, admiring the way the ring sparkled under the colorful display in the sky
“If the kid just had an ounce of patience, I could have actually surprised you.” Sam laughed
“Consider me surprised. I love you Sam.”
“I love you too baby. Hey just think of how excited AJ’s gonna be, getting his 4th of July wish to make you his Aunt.”
“Is that a thing? Does Captain America grant Independence Day wishes now? Like Santa for summer?” you joked
“Just for my nephews. And for you.” he kissed you again
“You know if you tell him that, next year he’s gonna ask for a puppy.”
“Ha! and I’ll do it. And Sarah will kill me.”
“Puppy would make a cute ring bearer in our wedding.”
“Now who’s the one with ideas?”
"Just saying, a Fourth of July wedding with a puppy would be amazing."

Steve took one last look at himself in the mirror.  He’d dressed up.  A gunmetal three-piece suit with a pale blue tie to bring out his eyes. It was probably the most formally he’d ever dressed to go out on a date.  Dating in general had been limited.  He and Bucky had gone on the odd double date.  He’d gone out for drinks with Sam.  He'd taken Sharon out to dinner and dancing a few times.  But no date had been particularly formal or fancy.  And since becoming part of a rather large polycule, dating had been taken right off the table.
It felt strange now to be taking you out to an expensive restaurant.  Risky even.  Things had changed in the few weeks since they’d pulled that sentient black sludge from him.  For so long the group had been keeping what they had secret, and he’d known how much everyone had hated that.  While they agreed with him that keeping the secret was important, it was always him that pushed to keep it, because he didn’t want to upset the public or seem unprofessional.  He’d been more worried about people questioning if they were good enough people to act as heroes, than about the feelings of the people he loved.
There was something that this whole ordeal had shown him, Sam, Bucky, Sharon, Natasha, Clint, and you had all stuck by him at his absolute worst, trying to help him back to the light, and he couldn’t trust the public to stick with him at his absolute best.  His priorities were all wrong and he needed to put the feelings of the people he loved before the perceived judgment from people who didn’t even know him.
They were no longer going to keep the relationship a secret.  Not that they’d be unprofessional at work, or make a big statement about how they were in a seven-person polycule.  They just weren’t going to hide anymore.  They’d go out together.  If they were out of uniform and outside, they’d show affection to each other without worrying about being spotted.  They’d go on actual dates.  They’d take this relationship in the natural direction that it would go if it was just two people and if that meant they stayed happy in the tower in separate apartments, so be it, but if it meant a commitment ceremony and moving in together and having a family, then he’d be open to that too.
That was starting with you today.  He was taking you to a nice restaurant and splurging, because after spending months, struggling to get to know a version of Steve that was wrong, you deserved the chance of getting the best version of him, and to get spoiled at the same time.  It still felt weird after so long hiding things, but he wanted to do this for you.  He wanted to restart with his best foot forward.
He made his way down to your room and knocked on the door.  You opened it and he felt his breath catch.  You were breathtaking, obviously taking his instruction to dress up to heart.  Your makeup was flawless, and you wore a red A-line dress with a heart-shaped bodice and halter neck.  The halter strap was black lace and the lace traced around the neckline.  There was a matching sash around the waist, black ribbon laced up the back, and black mesh poking out from underneath the skirt.
“Wow,” Steve breathed as he took you in.  “You look beautiful.”
“You don’t look so bad yourself,” you said approaching him.  There was a slight hesitation before he leaned down and kissed you.  He had meant it to be just a peck on the lips, but your hand went to his lapel and you held him there, one foot kicking out behind you.
It felt good.  Right.  Yes - he had spent months and months connecting with you with a dark passenger inside him twisting his thoughts, but he’d still been there.  The real Steve had still gotten to know you.  He had kissed you many times - this was just the first time he’d done it since that day in the hot tub where there hadn’t been a voice trying to turn it into something dark.  This kiss was familiar but different and it felt more right.  It was real and it was him connecting with you.
You pulled back slowly, sucking softly on his plump bottom lip.  “Mmm… that was nice.”
He hummed in agreement as he looked at you.  You seemed a little dazed and you took a moment to shake it off.  When you did, you patted his chest and gestured for the door. “So where are we going?”
“Tony pulled some strings and got us reservations at the Polo Bar,” Steve said as he stepped outside.
You paused as you pulled the door closed behind them and you started laughing.  “Oh boy.”
Steve wasn’t sure what had just happened.  Was there something wrong with the polo bar?  “What’s the matter?” he asked.  “Bad choice?  Tony said it was the place to be.”
You wrapped your arm around his elbow and leaned into him again. “It’s fine. I’m sure the food will be really good…”
“But?”
“But,” you said.  “My first date with Sam was at a really expensive, fancy place too.  And we were both awkward and uncomfortable in it until we left and did something more relaxed.”  The two of you arrived at the elevator and got on board and you turned to look at him.  “See the thing is, he was trying to impress me instead of get to know me.  Honestly, I think he specifically didn’t want to get to know me, because he was dating you and he didn’t want to fall for someone else.”
Steve smiled affectionately.  “He did anyway.”
You laughed and dropped your gaze.  “He did.  Because we ditched it before we ordered and we just walked around.  We got to know each other and we had fun just being us.”  You touched his chest again and looked up into his eyes.  Steve smiled and put his hand on yours as he gazed down at you.  “You don’t seem like a fancy restaurant type, Steve.  If you are, then I’m happy to be corrected, but we’re going on this date because we need to get to know each other.  We should do something that will let me do that.”
Steve couldn’t help but smile.  You were totally right.  He’d already won you over.  Now you just needed to get to know each other.  He nodded.  “You’re right.  Scratch the Polo Bar.  What can we do instead?”
The doors opened into the lobby and the two of you stepped out. “That’s really up to you.  Who is Steve Rogers?  Is he going to the theater?  Does he like to dance?  Bowling?  Ping Pong?  Amusement Parks?  Boat rides?  Ball games?  Live music?  Dinner and a movie?  The great thing about New York is that there’s always something happening.”
He nodded in agreement and stopped you before you went out the front door.  “Let’s walk for a bit while I think.  But before we step outside, that’s going to be a little crazy out there.  How do you want to do this?”
You looked out where the usual mill of paparazzi and fans were hanging around and seemed to consider things for a moment before returning his gaze.  “Can I loop my arm with yours and stay close?”
He smiled and offered you his arm.  “Of course.”
The two of you walked outside.  There had been no official statement about any of the team dating yet, and so this was the first time anyone had been out publicly together.  The reaction to Steve stepping outside with you was instantaneous.  People started calling out Steve’s name and they swarmed in.  Security tried to hold them back and make a path for you to escape through, but you were planning on walking.  Steve quickly altered the plan.  He held you close to him and stepped out into the street, flagging down the first cab he could get, and the two of you climbed into the back.
“Where to?” the driver asked as he pulled back out into the street.
“Just drive around for a bit.  We haven’t quite decided that.  We just need to get away from that crowd,” Steve answered as he buckled up.
“You’ve got it, Cap,” the driver said.
Steve turned his attention back to you.  “A lot of what you suggested sounds good.  I love musicals and I haven’t seen one in so long.  But it’s not great for getting to know each other. I would love to go swing dancing, but you know what?  I think I’d like for that to be something we all do together.”
“Oh yeah,” you agreed.  “That would be amazing.”
“I have to admit, I’m really heavily drawn to a ballgame.  I loved going to the game when I was younger.  We always sat so far back.  But even if there was a game on tonight, it’ll be a cold day in hell that I support the Yankees.”
You snorted and pulled out your phone.  “You, Steven Rogers, are in luck.  The Mets are playing the Phillies.  The game starts in ten minutes, so we’ll be about twenty minutes late, but that’s okay.  What happens in the first twenty minutes anyway?”
“You’re really fine with that?” Steve asked.
“Totally fine.  Sitting in the stands, talking, watching a game.  We can get a hotdog, a lobster roll, and some kind of spiked lemonade.  It’ll be fun.  And who knows, maybe you’ll have a new team.”
“That’d be nice,” he agreed.  “Because I can’t support the Dodgers now they’ve defected.”
You laughed and nudged him. “See, I’m already learning more about you.”  You leaned over and tapped on the glass. “Citi Field please.”
On the drive to Queens, you bought the tickets.  Steve tried to argue but you said the site was already open.  So Steve said he was paying for the food.  He even placed the orders for that via the app, so within forty minutes not only were the two of you in the stadium, but you were seated with your food and drinks.  Steve had gone a little overboard.  Well - he needed the extra food, he burned calories like a furnace burned paper.  Things had changed in the world of ballpark food since he was a kid, and he no longer had to worry that buying a hotdog would both eat up all his money and make him violently ill.  So when he saw the huge variety of things available on the app, he decided to let loose.  The box of food that Steve had carried to their seats was huge and contained a lobster roll, a chopped cheese sandwich, a fried chicken sandwich, two spiked lemonades - one strawberry and vodka and the other blackberry and tequila, and two classic Nathan’s hotdogs with sauerkraut.  He set the box on the ground between the two of you and you each grabbed something from the box.
“I might just take bites from everything if you’re cool with that,” you said.
“I’m very cool with that,” he agreed.  “A little sampler for you.”
You took a bite of the sandwich and leaned in against him, as you stared out at the game in front of you.  “Do you think we can talk about it?”
Steve had talked about it so many times now, he was honestly getting sick of it.  But he owed it to you.  He took a bite of his hot dog and sighed. “Sure.  Of course.  I guess there are things you need to know.”
“What was it like?” you asked.
“To begin with, it was almost like being drunk but without the thoughts being impaired.  It was like all my inhibitions were taken away.  When I slept with you, it was me that wanted to do it, but it was a kind of primal part of me that’s usually pretty quiet.  I was already attracted to you, but this me, the me without that thing in there needs more than that to let go.  I need to know you,” he explained.  “After a while, it was like another voice was there that I couldn’t seem to resist.  And the longer it went, the more it convinced me to do things that I would never do.  It was like it was pulling my ID to the surface.  Sometimes I was fine.  If things were calm and I was just hanging out with you all, I was just me. But if something annoyed me, it just took control and where I might normally just be annoyed, I would be furious.  I was taking it out on anything near me.  If it was sex, I was the most animalistic it could make me.  The things I did - I do when I’m asked, and it’s not that I don’t enjoy them, I enjoy making my lovers feel good.  But that wasn’t me.  That was it using my body.”
Your brow furrowed and you took his hand. “Oh god, Steve.  I’m so sorry.”
He shook his head.  “No… it’s… I don’t feel violated.  At least not sexually.”
“Are you sure?  Because it sounds like it did.  That we did,” you said, looking deep into his eyes.
“I promise,” he said.  “I never felt like my body was being used to sate someone else’s desire.  I felt like someone was just changing the way I enacted my desires.  I don’t know if that makes sense.  Like I said, I do those kinds of things and I want to sleep with all of you.  I enjoy being rough.  But it made me want them in a way that removed the whole reason I normally enjoy them.”
“Are you sure?” you asked.
“Yes, and if anything, I feel like I violated all of you.  Or it did… or…” he shook his head.  He couldn’t even figure out how to describe this voice in him that wasn’t him but changed him.  It hurt.  He hurt.  He felt guilty and angry about everything.  “I feel like you were all sleeping with a stranger.  And I feel worst for you because at least the others knew what they were seeing was my bad days amped up to a thousand.  They could see me and they were humoring me in the hopes that therapy could get under control.  They were trying to help get the man they loved back.  But you - you were falling for this monstrous version of me.”
He turned away from you, and you reached up, turning his cheek so he was making eye contact with you again. “I need you to listen to me, Steve.  I told everyone I loved them.  All of them.  But not you.  There’s been something holding me back.  I don’t know what that thing was making you do or not, but talking to you now I can guess. There were times I think I was turned on by that darkness.  And there were times that darkness scared the absolute shit out of me.  But the whole time I kept thinking; ‘When would I get to see that sweet man I spent time in the hot tub with.’  I think I haven’t told you I loved you, because I knew I wasn’t seeing you yet.”
Steve’s gaze softened, and he reached up, caressing your cheek. “You are so special.  I hope you know that.”
“I feel special,” you said.  “I have five people who all love me.  And I think one more who is on the way to.”
Steve smiled and nodded.  He leaned in just a little. “Oh, well on the way,” he said, and he kissed you.

The door to your house was broken. Someone had kicked it in. You step over broken glass, finding every drawer ripped apart.
“James?” You called out to your husband. Silence was the only answer you received.
“Bucky??” Your voice was more desperate. You ran from room to room, only finding more destruction. Making your way into Bucky’s office last, you found his sitting corner smashed, with blood staining the carpet and upholstery. A broken cell lay on the ground – Bucky’s work phone. The picture of you and Bucky on your wedding day had been ripped out of its frame, the blade of a hunting knife stuck in the side table through the photo of Bucky, while your face had been scratched beyond recognition. There was no mistaking the message that the sender was intending. Though your marriage wasn’t traditional, James Buchanan Barnes had never made you feel like property. Your husband was the only person in your life that hadn’t treated you like a means to an end, like a bargaining chip or a high-ticket item, and he was missing. You pick up the cracked phone on the ground, managing to turn it on enough to get Steve’s number out of it. You dial, hang up after one ring, then call right back.
“Hey, Buck, what’s up?” You hear Steve’s jovial voice on the line.
“He’s made his move. Get Wilson and be here in 20.” Your voice was calm, but Steve could hear the icy bite.
“Y/N, sweetheart, I know this is tough but–”
“But nothing, Rogers.” You cut him off. “I know that I haven’t been involved in the business, but this is personal. 20 minutes. Wilson. Bring however many weapons you can carry.” You hung up, not waiting for a response.
Tumblr media
Your marriage was transactional, you’d known that from the start. You’d been adopted by Rumlow Senior when your mother had passed, and been raised alongside his son, Brock. At least, that’s the story the Public knew. You had been part of your mother’s efforts to pay off her debts to the Rumlow Mafia family. Your father had passed from massive medical complications – you didn’t know a lot of the details, you had been too young to understand and no one had ever given you much to go on past that – and your mother had borrowed money from the Rumlows to help pay for his treatments. There wasn’t money to pay back her loans, so she paid them back the only way she could. Your mother had become the infamous Mafia fixer known as Lady Death, and you had been sent to live with the Rumlow family at age five as insurance. She had been legally dead since you were adopted by the Rumlows, but your mother had been killed for real on an assignment when you were seventeen. After over a decade with the family, Rumlow Senior had made you a deal. Keep playing the role of his adoptive daughter, and you would be kept safe. When you were twenty one, you were given a choice. Rumlow Senior would be stepping down as head of the Rumlow Family that year.
“But why would you pick me?” The question hung heavy in the air of Rumlow Senior’s office.
“You have been raised in the Family just as Brock has, Y/N. You are every bit as ruthless as my biological son, and I have complete faith that you would make the right decision for the future of the family whenever the need arose. Unlike my son, however, you have a cool head on your shoulders. You do not jump at the chance for violence. You take the diplomatic route whenever possible, and leave none in your path when it is not.” You sat there in silence. This wasn’t a life that you had wanted. True, you had grown up learning alongside Brock in order to maintain the role of Rumlow’s Little Princess, but you hadn’t ever expected to be offered anything, much less control of the family.
“I . . . I don’t mean any disrespect, but what’s the other option?” Rumlow Senior crossed his arms. You knew that wasn’t the answer he was hoping for, but still, he responded.
“If you don’t step into the role of Matriarch, there will be a target on you. Your safest choice would be to marry the head of another family. Your husband’s power would both protect you and benefit our family.” You chew on your lower lip and nod slowly. There was no leaving this life behind for you, not if you wanted to live past the age of 25.
“If I really do get a choice . . . I would rather the marriage.” You took a deep breath, collecting your thoughts. Rumlow Senior watches you, a pensive expression on his face. “You’ve been an amazing father to me, both before and after my mother’s . . . Passing . . . but this life. . . it isn’t for me. I don’t want any hand in the lifestyle that killed my mother.” You couldn’t stop the bite from sneaking into your voice during your last sentence. Rumlow Senior nodded slowly.
“As much as it pains me to admit, this life has not been kind to you. I’ll put out the notification to other families and see who we may ally ourselves with. You’ll always be a part of this family, Princess, even if you weren’t born into it.” He gave you a gentle smile. The old man had always treated you carefully and stated that your mother’s debt wasn’t yours to carry, but you’d overheard conversations behind closed doors. An arranged marriage had been in the cards for almost a decade now. You weren’t a part of the family, you were a business asset that he wanted to keep compliant. If nothing else, at least the marriage would get you out.
Several offers had been made. It seems the Romanoff Matriarch liked women, and the Pierce empire also put in a bid for his youngest son. The one that surprised you the most, however, was James Buchanan Barnes. His was a family made of people who didn’t have a home, jokingly called The Lost Boys by Brock and his lackeys. While he had no family power, he was indisputably powerful.
“So which one do you think, Princess? Any of these would make great allies for our family. That Romanoff girl is quite a catch, she’s got fire in her.” You put on your best business mask, looking over the files.
“Yeah . . . She is pretty great, but the Romanoffs only control most of the upper East side. We have the South, which is almost double the size of the upper East. The smartest choice is Barnes. His White Wolf family controls the North and the parts of the East that the Romanoffs don’t.” You close the folders and lay them on the desk. “First choice is Barnes, second choice is Romanoff, and third choice is Pierce. He’s always given me the creeps though.” Rumlow Senior smirked, impressed with your choices.
“Spoken like a true businesswoman. Let’s have a wedding!”
Tumblr media
Within the next two months, you and Barnes were married.
“Please sit still?” You kept dabbing the medical wipe on his bloodied knuckles despite the mobster’s squirming. “I know it stings, but you did this to yourself. Besides, are you gonna sit here and tell me that you can punch a man multiple times, but you turn into a toddler when I have to clean a cut?” Barnes kept looking down, his face forever brooding. He didn’t answer, but did still his hand. “There. Was that so hard?” You busied yourself putting away the first aid kit.
“You aren’t comfortable around me, are you?” His statement caught you off guard and your head snapped up to look at him. His expression was relaxed. This wasn’t the kingpin that had just beat information out of a Pierce Empire lackey. He sighed, rolling his shoulders. “I don’t think a lot of people would be, especially witnessing what you just did . . . I’m sorry you had to see that.” You chew on your lip and Barnes continued. “I know you were raised with the Rumlows, and I guess I just assumed that you’d be used to seeing that sort of thing.” He paused, waiting for your response, but seemed genuinely taken aback when you started to giggle.
“You think I’ve been distant because of a little violence? James–”
“Bucky,” he interrupted. “Please, call me Bucky.” A soft smile breaks through your mask.
“Bucky,” you corrected. “I’ve done worse than that to Rumlow thugs when they failed to follow my father’s orders. I wasn’t shielded from any of it. In fact, I was even offered control of the Rumlow family. I turned it down. Given the choice, I’d rather not be the cause of violence, but violence doesn't bother me ”
“Then what does?” His eyebrows knit together in confusion, and you sit across from him on the tile floor
“About the beating or the relationship?”
“Uuhh . . . both, I guess?” You’d never heard Barnes sound so unsure. It was refreshing, even endearing to a degree.
“I’ve been treated like a bargaining chip since I was little. First, my mother, then my adoptive father on multiple occasions. Our marriage was just another business deal to him, and I didn’t think you’d want a clingy business deal. You get alliance with the Rumlows, and I get to keep my protection. I don’t see a reason to complicate things.” Bucky was quiet for a few moments.
“And the beating?”
“Oh, that one’s easy. It’s really hard for someone to give you information if you don’t give them a break in between blows to answer your questions. Seriously, that’s basically mafia 101.” Bucky burst out laughing at your cheeky response. People didn’t usually talk to him like that, they were all too afraid.
“I’ll give you that one, Doll,” he stated as he regained control of himself. He stared at you, taking in your every feature. After a few moments, you broke the silence.
“You’re thinking something, Bucky. What’s on your mind?”
“I’m thinking that I’d like to make this relationship a little more complicated . . . what about you?”
Tumblr media
You had kept your own room, but from then on things with your new husband just seemed . . . easier. You spent most of that night talking about how you really came to be a part of the Rumlow family, and how you had opted for marriage because it was the closest thing to your own life that you’d ever have. In turn, Bucky began to open up about his past. How working for other groups had landed him with a metal left arm and a distrust of most people. How his time as a fixer had caused most people to fear him, and therefore avoid him. He didn’t really have friends outside of Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson, and they both worked for him. You got the sense that he chose to have his marriage arranged because he thought it was easier than the alternative for someone like him.
“You know . . . you don’t have to be alone.” You had told him one night.
“And what do you mean by that, Doll?” He had questioned you, raising an eyebrow as he set down his bourbon glass.
“You say you’re alone because people are afraid, but that’s not completely true. You can’t fool me, Buck. I was raised with the potential to do the job you do. You aren’t alone because people are afraid, but because you don’t give them the opportunity to not be.” Bucky was quiet, but watched you with a fascination. You place your drink on the side table and lean forward. You’d come to enjoy the nights that you and Bucky would just sit and talk. It was a welcome escape from the monotony of everyday life and the drain of keeping up social appearances. Both of you were relieved when you could drop the masks and the roles that you were each expected to play and just exist with another person who didn’t judge you. Who didn’t hold any expectations apart from honesty. Your husband takes another sip, trying to hide the smile that played across his face.
“And what would you suggest I do instead, Sweetheart?” God you loved the intensity of his gaze, and as he ran his tongue over his lower lip, you decided that you were feeling brave. You stood, sauntering over to him. Bucky leaned back in his seat, setting his drink down and allowing you to lean over him, your lips brushing his neck.
“Ask.” That singular word whispered in his ear broke Bucky’s self control. His right hand flew to your neck, pulling your lips to his. You felt the cool metal of his left hand pressing into your thigh as he slid your skirt up, allowing you the mobility to straddle his lap. You press yourself against him as you whine, desperate for his touch. You didn’t sleep much that night, being pushed to the edge over and over and over, only to be brought back without release. Bucky loved watching you struggle. He loved your willingness to fight, and he wanted to watch as the fight drained from you and you submitted to his will. He knew you had been playing the roles expected of you your whole life so here, behind closed doors, he would earn your submission, not demand it. You would choose when you broke, but once you did? Bucky was going to ruin you, and he was going to savor every moment
Tumblr media
After that night, you rarely slept in your own room. Your marriage was transactional, no one could deny that. Through the years, however, it had become so much more. You became one of the most powerful couples in the city, though you still kept your distance from the world of crime. Your diplomacy was unrivaled, but one night, that all came crashing down.
Your brother, Brock, had taken the role of Rumlow Patriarch when your father stepped down. For years, Brock’s temper had been controlled by your father’s background guidance. That all changed the night Rumlow Senior passed away. You attended the funeral, of course, but he passed suddenly. Bucky was out of town on a business trip and unable to make it back in time for the event. You passed along his condolences to Brock, but Brock took your husband’s absence extremely personally. Without the watchful eye of Rumlow Senior, Brock Rumlow’s true nature shone through. Brock was a loose cannon. His temper was unmatched, and his ego caused him to completely disregard the rules that every other family played by. For months after the funeral, the street thugs under your brother’s command ran rampant. They overstepped boundaries and lines of control held by other families as well as started fights wherever the opportunity arose. One night, they went too far. Three of Bucky’s new recruits had been carried back to the office after your brother’s thugs beat them almost to death. All they had done was refuse to leave the bar that they were already drinking at when the Rumlow thugs showed up, stating that the two groups could co-exist. These were just kids, barely old enough to even be IN the bar, and with six men versus the three kids, it was a massacre. Adding insult to injury? That bar was on White Wolf property and owned by Steve Rogers, one of Bucky’s right hands. Bucky had come home fuming that night. You talked him down from murdering your brother on the spot. You had no love for your brother, but murder would result in an all-out war. You spent the better part of the night with Bucky, Sam, and Steve readying yourselves for several outcomes. The following night, Bucky went to have a civil meeting with Brock, Mob Boss to Mob Boss about the behavior of his subordinates. Steve and Sam went on patrol hoping to stop another encounter, and you went to meet with Natasha Romanoff, the Matriarch of the Romanoff family. If this all went south, you would need an ally in order to take your brother in an all out war.
Tumblr media
So that’s how you got here. Standing in your husband’s office surrounded by the aftermath of a ransacking. Your shoulders fell back and your chin lifted. If Brock wanted a fight, you’d give it to him. Brock may be the head of the Rumlow Family, but with Bucky currently indisposed, you were the head of White Wolf. Time to show him what his Little Sister was capable of when someone threatened her family. You headed straight to your room. If you were going to be acting as the White Wolf Matriarch, then you should look the part. You slide into your black business leggings. They look like skinny cut pants, but provide enough flexibility for you to move. A flowy black blouse pairs nicely, accompanied by several gold accessories. You favored rings and necklaces, but added a couple cuff bracelets for good measure. Your knee high riding boots with the steel toe inserts were pulled from your closet. Your winged liner was sharp enough to stab a man was accompanied by a dark lip and perfect brows. Finally, you swept your hair up into a sleek high ponytail. You take one look in the mirror, and your appearance plus the cold hearted look in your eyes made you smirk.
“The bitch is back,” you thought to yourself. You pulled a duffel bag out from under your bed. You hadn’t much from your mother, but you did keep her favorite set of knives. They were well known as the choice weapons for Lady Death, and that fear could serve your purposes. Strapping the wrist holsters to each wrist, you frowned. This blouse was nice, but it didn’t hide the knives well enough for your liking. . . You slipped several more into your boots as you heard Steve’s car pull up. You turned to rush out the door when you paused. One of Bucky’s black suit jackets was draped over the chair by your door. It was far too big for you to wear, but if you draped it over your shoulders . . . You tried it out in the mirror. It worked, hanging off your shoulders like a cape. The extra fabric also provided the cover to your wrists needed to conceal your wrist sheaths better. You grab your phone and head down the stairs to meet Steve.
“Sweetheart, I don’t think this is a good–”
“Well, then it’s a good thing your job isn’t thinking right now, Rogers.” The blatant interruption caught both men off guard. “You’re going to listen carefully because I’m only explaining this once. The story you’ve been fed about the Rumlows taking me in out of the goodness of their hearts is complete and utter bullshit. My mother worked off her debt to them, and I was kept as collateral. She taught me a lot of what she knew. I was raised as a Rumlow and was offered control of the Family because of my brother’s inability to control his temper or play by the rules. You can either do what I tell you, or you can explain to Mr. Barnes when we return why you didn’t accompany me. Are there any questions?” Whether it be the lack of emotion in your eyes or the ice in your voice, you didn’t know, but neither man argued. Wilson was the first one to speak up.
“ . . . Who’s your mom?” You look Sam dead in the eye, smirk, and with a flick of your wrist you impale one of the knives in your wrist sheath in the ground between his feet. Both Sam and Steve go pale with recognition.
“My mother was Lady Death.”
Tumblr media
The Door to the interrogation room blew inward. C4 was such an amazing toy, you were so happy that Sam kept a stash. Hands in your pockets, you step over the twisted remains of the door, the dust settling at your feet. Immediately you hear the click of guns, but that only pulls a sadistic smirk to your face.
“Hello, boys. For those of you who don’t know who I am: look to your elders. For those of you who do: Run.” It was your brother's right hand and childhood friend, Justin, who spoke first.
“Y/N, didn’t expect to see you join the party.” He swaggered up to you, full of confidence that only an upper class white man could possess. He loomed over you, and you weren’t sure if he was trying to be sexy or intimidating. Neither was a good look on him. “What’s your problem, princess? Did we break up your little game of house?” You look up at the taller man, not budging an inch.
“Oh not at all, champ, I just thought I’d give you and your little friends a chance to play in the big leagues. Only three of them? Shouldn’t be much work.”
“Hey, Lady, I don’t know who the fuck you think you are, but –” Justin interrupts him before you have the chance.
“That’s Barnes’s wife, dumbass. She’s the Boss’s adopted sister, and the last person you wanna piss off.”
“She don’t seem so scary, all of her power comes from other people! Why should I–”
“You’d be well to listen to your superiors, or haven’t you learned that yet?” The ice in your voice stopped the newbie dead in his tracks. You stalk towards him, eyes fixed. “Let’s give you a family history lesson, hmm?” You had the undivided attention of all four of the Rumlow thugs. You just needed to keep it that way long enough for Steve and Sam to work into position. You stopped in the dead center of the room “ Justin, how many years ago was Lady Death’s final kill?”
“Uuhh . . . five years? Just before you married Barnes.”
“Good Boy,” you purred, working as much condescension into your voice as you could manage. “And how many years ago did my mother die?” As he did the mental math, Justin began to shift uncomfortably.
“ . . . Seven . . . no, Nine? Nine years ago . . .” As the dots started to connect, the realization began to show on each man’s face. Your smirk grew to a full-on sadistic smile.
“Let’s try this again, gentlemen. Whether or not you know who I am, it’s too late. I’m Lady Death.” The tension is palpable in the air as the newbies eye you, then the door, as if evaluating their chances, but your backup was already in position. From the rafters of the building, four shots rang out. You’d ordered Steve and Sam to aim to kill, but you hadn’t bothered to check their handiwork, simply stepping over the bodies and making your way towards the last door that stood between you and your brother.
The door creaked open, and your rubber soles thudded against the concrete with each step you took. No matter how hardened to violence you were, you had never cared about any of the people on the receiving end of your violence. No matter how hard you tried, nothing could have prepared for the sight that met you on the other side of that godforsaken door. Bucky was sat in a metal chair. His arms were tied behind his back, and a gag was stuffed in his mouth. His white dress shirt had been discarded, and his undershirt was torn. The bridge of his nose was cut, and someone had busted open his left cheek. Dried blood still caked his skin. The moment he saw you, his eyes filled with fury. He fought against his restraints, almost toppling the chair.
“Aaaah, Y/N, nice of you to join us! Can’t have a party without Daddy’s favorite kid,” Brock spat at you. You study your brother, willing your face back to neutrality.
“You know just as well as I do that that isn’t true, Brother mine.” If your calm demeanor threw Brock off guard, he didn’t show it.
“Well, Sister mine, your husband here had the audacity to tell me how to run my people, after refusing to even honor our father. Our father who spoke of him like the Golden Son just for marrying the whore who wormed her way into my life!” By the end of his statement, Brock was screaming. He took a moment and regained his composure.
“Do you really think that was a good move?” As you questioned Brock, you walked over to a spare folding chair. You let the jacket fall from your shoulders, draping it over the back of the chair.
“I can make whatever move I want. Dad may have taught you everything you know, but he taught me everything he knew. That’s the difference here, Wendy. That is what you are, aren’t you? The Wendy to his pathetic troupe of Lost Boys.” Locking eyes with him, your smirk returns.
“See, that’s where you’re wrong, Brock. Dad isn’t the only one who taught me things. My mother lived here too, remember?” Brock’s eyes narrow, tracking you as you slowly close the distance between you and him. “How do you explain the kills on Lady Death’s roster after my mother passed, hmm? Think about it.” You could see the gears turning in Brock’s thick skull before he shook his head.
“You lying bitch, you’re trying to play on my nerves. You turned down this job because you weren’t capable” You interrupt, starting to slide one of your knives from the wrist sheath into your hand.
“I turned that job down because I wasn’t interested. Never mistake my disinterest for being incapable.” You flick your wrist, your knife landing squarely in the meat of Brock’s shoulder.
He lunged at you, and the only thing you could focus on was the exchange of blows. He was a lot faster than you’d anticipated, and you were fairly evenly matched. You registered the pain of his blows connecting multiple times, but you pushed it down and attempted to return the favor. Suddenly, you felt his fist connect with the side of your face, then an arm wrapped around your waist. Brock spun, throwing you across the room. You hit the wall with a sickening smack, the wind being knocked from your lungs. Your brother slowly started stalking towards you. He was breathing heavily and wiped the blood from his upper lip as he walked, never taking his eyes off you. Brock grabbed your jaw, dragging you upwards, and you did the only thing you could think of. You slipped a knife out of your boot, and jammed it into him on your way up. Both you and him fell, Brock’s head hitting the ground with a sickening smack. You hauled yourself up, steadying yourself against the wall. You grabbed your brother by his hair, yanking his head up.
“You’re a fucking disgrace to this family and all that Dad stood for.” You paused, spitting out the blood that was pooling in your mouth.
“What the fuck happened??” You heard Sam shout as he and Steve finally caught up. You looked from your brother to Sam, steeling your gaze.
“Change in management,” you stated. “Send out a notice. Due to extremely reckless behavior that nearly started a war, Brock Rumlow has been removed as Patriarch of the Rumlow family. Its territories and personnel will be merged into White Wolf. Any concerns can be taken up with Lady Death.”
You turn your attention to Bucky, picking up one of your discarded knives to cut the ropes and gag off of him.
“Doll, that has got to be one of the hottest things I’ve ever seen.” Your satisfaction definitely showed on your face. After taking a moment to catch your breath, you pick the discarded suit jacket off the back of the folding chair and hand it to Bucky, leaning on him for support. Bucky pauses, glancing between Steve and Rumlow.
“Bring him back to the office. We’re not going to be done talking for a very long time.”

reader pairing: bucky barnes x reader
summary: Bucky gets stabbed on a mission and shares his last moments in the arms of his best friend, Sam.
warnings: angst, blood, death, swearing
"Bucky!"
No.
No. No.
This can't be happening. Not now.
Sam Wilson ran as fast as his legs would carry him. Holding his gun in his trembling hands, he shot the bastard who had just holstered the long knife he'd stabbed Bucky with.
Bucky was falling, as if in slow motion. His remarkably steel blue irises caught Sam's dark brown ones and all Sam saw was pain. Raw pain.
Sam lurched forward and caught Bucky before he hit the ground, drawing him close to his chest as he lowered them both to the floor. Heart beating rapidly, he laid Bucky on the ground and shrugged off his jacket, gently laying it beneath the brunette's head to cushion it from the hard concrete. He covered his friend's wound with both of his hands, trying his hardest not to panic as his body showed no sign of stopping the oozing blood flow.
Bucky groaned and flinched, the pressure of Sam's hands increasing the pain. "Hey, hey. Easy, man, I got you. I got you." Sam felt tears build in his eyes as he fully registered the pain that the man was in. "The paramedics are on their way, Bucky. You'll be okay." You have to be, he wanted to say, but he knew he'd completely break if he said any more.
Sam tried hard to hold in the sobs that were threatening to rise in his throat when Bucky took his hand in his. A weak smile formed on Bucky's face, though to Sam, it looked more like a grimace. "It's okay, Sam."
No, it's not okay, Sam wanted to yell as he stared helplessly at his best friend's pale, bleeding body lying on the cold floor. Sam wanted nothing more than for it to not be real. That the red liquid staining his friend's once crisp, white shirt wasn't real. That it was all some horrifying nightmare and he'd wake up from it, with Bucky sleeping soundly in the other room in their shared apartment. He couldn't lose Bucky. Not the man he'd come to love as the closest best friend he'd ever had. Sam couldn't imagine the world without him. Nothing would ever be the same without him, for Sam and everyone else who knew him personally. He knew he'd lose a large part of his reason to push himself further as an Avenger if he lost him. He couldn't. His heart cracked painfully and a broken sob escaped his lips.
Not him. Not Bucky. God, anyone but Bucky.
"Hold on, okay? You have to hold on. The ambulance is on its way."
Bucky shook his head lightly. "T-thank you, Sam." He croaked out, and Sam couldn't stop himself. He slid his arm under Bucky's shoulders and pulled him onto his lap, cradling his head in the crook of his arm.
"Don't. You're going to be okay," Sam said, squeezing Bucky's hand tightly, trying to reassure himself more than Bucky as the tears streamed down his face. "I'm sorry," Sam sobbed brokenly, "I should've been faster."
"Sam, no." Bucky squeezed his hand back and gave him a sad smile. "It wasn't your fault."
"No, Bucky. I don't want to lose you. I can't lose you." Sam choked out pleadingly, his voice cracking as he pulled his friend even closer. "I can't."
"T-thank you for everything, Sam." Bucky couldn't hear anything that Sam was saying, he was blinking furiously to force his eyes to stay open, his pulse was weak, and his breathing was labored. "Thank you for giving m-me the chance to have a," Bucky paused, "a family."
"No! No. Stop it, Bucky. You aren't going anywhere." Sam shook his head, but he knew he was denying the inevitable. "I'm proud of you, Bucky," he whispered shakily because Bucky had to know. He had to know how proud he was of how far he'd come, what with him being a former assassin and moving on from his past to become a hero like the people that surrounded him.
Bucky smiled a warm, genuine smile that made Sam's heart clench at the fact that it'd be the last time he saw it. "I'll still kick your ass from up there, you know," Bucky chuckled weakly, his voice hoarse. He closed his eyes as his body became too tired to keep them open. They both stayed silent for five minutes, and it was unexpected for Sam when he no longer heard the pained coughs coming from Bucky with each breath. He watched in horror as his best friend stopped breathing, his chest no longer rising. He rushed to check his pulse, but there wasn't one. Bucky's hand was limp in Sam's, and the Avenger dressed in red, black, and grey looked blankly at his friend's pale body.
"Damn it, Bucky!" Sam yelled, hopelessly shaking the wounded man's body. "Bucky! Wake up, man!" he begged, his shoulders jolting forward as he let out silent sobs. But Bucky was gone. The one friend he thought would be with him until they were old and crippled, was dead.
He didn't want to believe it. "Come on, Bucky!" Sam's world shattered as he clutched the lifeless body to his chest. It felt like hours that he spent sitting there, but it was only several minutes before he felt Bucky being gently pulled from his arms.
He gripped his friend tighter, not noticing Bucky's fiancée, Y/N, and Tony Stark arrive. They all knew that Bucky was dead by the pain and grief written all over Sam's face.
It was all too real. Too fucking real. A choked sob escaped Y/N's lips as she saw the man who would have been her husband in three weeks being taken from Sam, laid down on a gurney, and covered with a sheet by two paramedics. She'd seen many deaths before but this one was different. James Buchanan Barnes, the son of a bitch who'd been in her heart since day one of first setting eyes on him, was gone.
They'd all miss his constant teasing, his ridiculously big grin he wore every damn minute of every damn day, and the way he flirted playfully with everyone he met. He tried to hit on Natasha when they first met, but he was shut down almost immediately when Sam informed him that the redhead was a lesbian.
Y/N's eyes found Sam's, and she looked away when she saw her fiancé's blood coating his hands and clothes, biting her lip to try and stop the sobs that she knew were trying to break out. She wiped the tears from her eyes, deciding to call Steve to inform him what had happened.
"Y/N/N?" Steve picked up on the second ring, anxious. Y/N texted him often, but only ever called when something was urgent. "Are you okay?"
No. No one here is okay.
"Yes, I- I'm fine." Her voice cracked as she looked at the blood staining the concrete.
"What happened?" Steve demanded.
"Steve...Bucky's gone."
There was silence for a moment, and then the sound of Steve pulling up his laptop. "He ran?" He found it unexpected, having been promised by Bucky that he wouldn't run. That he'd work with the Avengers and would stop hiding from his past.
She wished he had. She wished he was on a hot beach, enjoying the heat and swimming in the sea.
"No," Y/N choked out, "he's dead."

Skinny Love
Tumblr media
~ gif not mine credit to owner ~
Pairing: Sam Wilson x fem!Reader
Summary: Sam finds you singing Skinny Love by Birdy
Word count: 709
Warnings: Angst. Swearing. Mentions of child violence/death and child and human trafficking, sex slaves. Please do not read if the warnings makes you uncomfortable!
Masterlist
Tumblr media
“Come on, skinny love, just last the year. Pour a little salt, we were never here”
The soft melody travels through the long hallways of the compound, reaching the ears of the team minus Y/n and Sam.
“Buck go and get him” Steve instructs.
Not wasting any more time Bucky jumps up and runs straight to Sam’s office. Not caring to knock he barges straight in.
“She needs you, Sam”
Leaving his paperwork half-finished he follows his friend, his feet start to falter as soon as he hears the warm and powerful notes of her piano. He knew that the last mission of hers was rough, she told him she wasn’t ready to talk about it and being an understanding boyfriend that he is he knew she would talk to him when she was ready.
As much as he understood that she wasn’t ready to talk he just couldn’t help himself but look at the report file. Don’t judge him, he was concerned.
Bucky pats him on the shoulder, nodding to his friend and they part ways.
“My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer”
The mission briefing report stated that there was a group trafficking women from the Middle East, they were being sold to the highest bidder as sex slaves. Y/n had worked for the FBI Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit before becoming an agent of SHIELD. So naturally Fury picked her for the job.
“Tell my love to wreck it all. Cut out all the ropes and let me fall”
However, it’s wasn’t adults that were in the warehouses but children. Despite her seeing all the bad shit that happens in this world nothing could have prepared her for what she did see.
“My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my. Right at the moment, this order's tall”
Nearly 30 little girls. All under the age of 10. In all the years she’s been doing her job she never faltered, never once had she ever had to walk away to be sick.
Only seven of these poor innocent girls survived.
“And I told you to be patient. And I told you to be fine. And I told you to be balanced. And I told you to be kind”
She made sure she was the one who took the survivors home to reunite them with their grieving families. She made sure she personally told 23 parents that their baby was no longer here.
Sam would have tried to talk her out of it, if he had known.
“And in the morning, I'll be with you. But it will be a different kind. 'Cause I'll be holding all the tickets. And you'll be owning all the fines”
Standing in the doorway of their shared suite, he watches as her fingers effortlessly move across the keyboard, hearing her usual silky voice with a tinge of husk broke his heart.
“Come on skinny love, what happened here? Suckle on the hope in light brassiere. My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my. Sullen load is full, so slow on the split”
Since she’s back home she’s been plagued by nightmares. Nightmares that would cause her to wake Sam up with her screams.
He would hold her tightly every time, reassuring her that it’s just a nightmare.
Every time his heart cracks a little bit more.
“And I told you to be patient. And I told you to be fine. And I told you to be balanced. And I told you to be kind”
Slowly walking towards her, he smiles softly when she looks up at him. Taking a seat on the empty space of the bench he leans over to place a lingering kiss to her temple.
“And now, all your love is wasted. Then who the hell was I? 'Cause now I'm breaking at the bridges. And at the end of all your lies. Who will love you? Who will fight? And who will fall far behind? Come on skinny love”
He clings to his world as she falls apart.
“My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my, my”

Birdie | Sam Wilson
Tumblr media
Sam Wilson x fem!reader
Summary: You receive a call telling you that Sam and Bucky had been arrested. You go to get them when an unpleasant John Walker makes Sam's instincts to kick in.
Warnings: none I guess? I mean, John Walker being kind of a dick, but that's just about it. And a bit of swearing. Fluff.
A/N: This is my first ever attempt to write something marvel related. Sam is a very special character for me and I hope I did him well. I tried to keep it as in character as possible. Also sorry for any mistakes, English is not my first language! If any one is willing to read more about Sam, or has any suggestions for other marvel stories, my asks are open 👐
Tumblr media
You watch him exit the police station, walking next to Bucky. You're sure he hasn't seen you yet. Sam has a pained expression in his face, one that in a way lets you understand that everything that has happened wasn't in his plans.
Sam turned the shield to the government thinking, believing, it was the right choice. With Steve gone, the world lacked a Captain. But Sam thought giving the shield a place to be seen, admired even, would make the world realize that Captain America was more than a person, it was all the good actions Steve did and all the people he had saved.
Sam did not want to become Captain America. He wasn't an idiot, of course he considered the idea for like... A good minute. However, he soon realized he could never fill in those shoes. So, naturally, he did what he thought was best.
The day when John Walker appeared on TV saying that he was the new Captain America was not a good day.
Steve didn't chose John Walker. He didn't put his trust on him. Hell, he didn't even know him. How could someone give the shield to a random person? You remember entering the room where Sam was, glad that he was back from his latest mission, seeing his tortured face, tears begging to be shed, and his fists closed.
You looked at the TV and you knew. You knew that the man in front of you had been shattered to the core.
“Sam…”
“They gave it to a stranger. They gave the shield to a fucking stranger” he said, his voice breaking at the end.
You didn't know what to do. Of course, Steve was a friend, and a very dear one. And although you didn't share the connection that Sam and Bucky had with him, you knew how important Steve had been for the two of them. You didn't know how to comfort him. You just closed the distance that separated you both and wrapped your arms around him as tightly as you could. He hugged you quickly, and walked out of the room.
Since then, everything has been different.
Sam and you weren't exactly dating, but you both knew that there were feelings there. Hanging above your heads every time one of you entered the room, like some kind of magic, comforting and warm aura. After the new Captain America appeared, you both grew apart. He was working by his own, with Bucky, trying to find more about this new terrorist group. You were assigned other missions, and the space between the both of you, only got bigger. You were part of the Avengers, having trained half your life to become a police officer until you were recruited by SHIELD, once they found out about your interesting abilities. You had clairvoyance powers. These powers allowed you to know what happened in the past when touching certain objects or being in a room.
Recently, you had developed a new power: you could track your friends or family in any part of the world and know everything that was happening to them at that moment. Of course SHIELD had to recruit you, these were important abilities that one would want to have with them, and not against them.
It was like this that you found out that Sam had been arrested. Even before the phone rang, and the agency told you, you knew. You saw how he was stopped by the police just because of the color of his skin. It took you seconds to call SHIELD and ask for a drive.
And that's how you get there, just in time to see Sam walking out the station.
“Sam!”, you call.
He lifts his head and sees you. He isn’t really surprised to see you there. It was just a matter of time until you found out. He knows you always keep your “mental eyes” on him, as he calls them.
“You didn't need to come all the way here, birdie”, he says, getting closer to you, followed by a grumpy and sad supersoldier.
“Hey, Buck”
He just nods. You hug him, leaving the Sergeant a bit shocked. But he hugs you back in an instant, a sigh of relief escaping from his lips. Bucky Barnes sometimes needed physical touch rather than words. He craved it. Your clairvoyance powers allowed you to know everything that had passed in his life. You found out, thanks to him, that your powers not only allowed you to “read” objects and see their past stories. You could also read people's past. For Bucky, having someone that knew all his story without having to say out loud, was a relief. Soon enough, both of you became inseparable friends. He knew about your secret-not-so-secret crush on Sam. And even though he declared that he didn't understand how you could like him, he supported it. Bucky knew that Sam was a good guy, and he wouldn't allow anyone other than him to be your partner.
"They aren't worthy, sweetheart"
That's what he always says.
"Thanks for coming. They were literally assholes"
"Yeah... I saw everything, guys." You turn to Sam, who is looking at the floor. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, don't worry. 'S not the first time and certainly, not the last time", he says, voice thick with pain.
You are about to say something else when the obnoxious sound of a siren fills the empty street. Your eyes search for the origin of the sound, seeing John Walker and his friend, Lemar Hoskins leaning over a car.
"Gentlemen. Oh, and lady", he smiles looking at you.
His smirk makes your stomach turn.
The three of you get close to him. Sam seems to have noticed your discomfort, because he stays by your side, his hand brushing slightly with yours, a reminder of his presence. You feel goosebumps, your skin reacting to the light contact that left your hand aching and burning with the need of holding Sam's hand between yours.
"I don't think we have been properly introduced, you must be Y/n L/n, right? I'm John Walker" he stretches his hand out to you.
Something inside tells you to stay away from him, even from his touch. But, you know how important are first impressions and connect your hand with his.
And man, was it a mistake.
You see something in him. Something evil. It is small, but it is growing. It is being feed by the rejection of the world, the feeling of failure, and the darkness that comes with a great power.
You can't see the future. That is what you always tell yourself. You couldn't see it. Maybe you didn't allow yourself to. And even though you can't see even a glimpse of John Walker's future, you know something for sure. He wasn't like Steve.
He wasn't a good guy.
You dropped his hand like it burns you. Bucky looking at you, his head tilted, a silent question in his eyes. You shake your head slightly. Now it is not the moment. Bucky nods and focuses again on Walker, not giving it more importance.
Sam, however, is watching you closely.
See, Sam always relied on your instincts. Whenever the both of you were introduced to a person, he watched your facial expressions, waiting for the judgement that sure would come once you had read them. Not that you showed your feelings that much, but Sam had spent a considerable amount of time looking at you, and he knew, just by a little flick of your nose, when someone wasn't trustworthy.
This time your nose didn't flick. But he saw the fear in your eyes and he knew.
While Walker was talking to the men and trying to make them work together, Sam subtly moved you so you were behind him. Sam didn't have a shield, but he would use his entire body to protect you if it came down to it.
Walker kept moving, so he could have his eyes on you. You noticed it, lewd thoughts flooding your mind. You grabbed Sam's hand, trying to stop the lustful thoughts of the Captain. Sam's blood boiled. He needed to get you out of there.
"Look, Walker's right. It is imperative that we find them and stop them. But you guys have rules of engagement and all kind of authorizations you have to get. We're free against", he said, squeezing your hand and turning around to leave. "We're more flexible. So it wouldn't make sense for us to work with you".
The three of you moved a few steps, your mind relaxing already. Bucky came close to you, ready to ask if you were okay, but Walker had something more to say.
"A word of advice, then", he said, loud and clear for all to hear.
He looked directly at Sam, holding his gaze.
"Stay the hell out of my way"
Bucky wants to punch him in the face. You didn't need your powers to know that. Sam squeezes your hand again, turning you around to leave.
"Hey, babe, you can do better. Why don't you come to my team? We can have a really good time", he chuckled.
Sam turns before Bucky or you could stop him. He stands so close to Walker that their noses touch.
"Talk to her one more time and I swear to God not even the shield will protect you" he whispers, voice pregnant with hate.
Sam could accept Walker being the new Captain America. He could accept Walker having the shield. But he wasn't going to tolerate any disrespectful comment towards you. No one will touch his girl.
Wait, his girl?
"Sam, c'mon. Not here", Bucky says grabbing him by the shoulders and moving him back "You're lucky she's here. I would have punch you myself if she wasn't"
You grabb Sam by the arm, whispering to him.
"Please, let's get out of here"
He looks at you, seeing a slight flash of fear crossing your eyes. He has to get you home.
"Do you have your car, birdie?"
"Yeah, it's around the corner"
"Let's go"
Sam, Buck and you walk to your car. Bucky offers to drive, Sam sits next to him, and you are in the backseat, looking to the passing cars. You see his hand on your mind before you feel it on your skin, trying to reach any part of your body. He needs to have you close in any possible way. And so do you. He caresses your leg, giving squeezes from time to time until he sees you relax in the seat.
"Better?", asks while turning his head to look at you.
"Yeah, thank you, Sam". You give him a little smile, one that made Sam's chest tighten.
"Anything for my birdie"
Bucky looks at Sam, smiles to himself and keeps driving. His two friends were disgustingly in love, and unable to notice. Guess you weren't as good as reading people as you thought.
The drive home is silent, you eventually fall asleep under Sam's soft touch. When he notices that you have fallen asleep, he takes off his jacket and covers you with it.
"You're a simp, my friend", says Bucky in a low tone, not wanting to disturb your sleep.
"First of all, I don't know what you're talking about. And second, we're not even friends".
"Yeah, you can tell that to yourself if it helps you sleep at night"
Bucky takes a look at your sleeping figure, knowing that he is going to be dead once you wake up, but he has to make something and get the two of you together before it's too late.
"She loves you, you know", whispers Bucky, keeping his eyes straight on the road.
"Who, your mom?"
"I am already regretting this" says the Sergeant while rolling his eyes.
"Buck, I know you're both best friends but I don't think she feels something for me in that way." Sam's voice grows quieter while expressing his feelings out loud. Why would someone like you, someone as amazing, brilliant and talented, be interested in someone like him, who could only use a pair of metallic wings?
"You're made for each other, I swear. She cannot read you like the rest"
That makes Sam furrow his brows.
"What? Why?"
"Oh that is something that you have to ask her, bird boy"
The pair becomes quiet, being left with their own thoughts and a very confused Sam.
You don't wake up until Sam opens your door and carries you, princess style, inside the house. He lays you in his bed, the sofa being occupied by the moody super soldier. Not that he was going to let you sleep in the sofa, anyway. He takes your shoes and covers you with a blanket, knowing that you will wake up in a few hours. Always a light sleeper.
Sam goes to the kitchen, Bucky is nowhere to be seen, maybe taking a walk or going for a run to trick his body into sleep.
While Sam makes himself some coffee, he reflects on the words that his friend, scratch that, his companion, told him in the car. His little bird in love with him. Could that be possible? Certainly, it wasn't the first time he heard that, Steve told him the same years ago, when they were running from SHIELD, and from the Winter Soldier.
He knew that Bucky was full of bullshit, but he didn't lie when it came to you. You were like his little sister, and he would do anything to protect you and make you happy. And Sam thinks how ironic it is that the Sergeant has to deal with him just to make you happy.
He will absolutely use this in his advantage.
Sam lifts his head when he hears the soft tiptoe of someone walking down the stairs. He smiles even more when he sees your face, full of sleep, and the wrinkles of the pillow marked on your cheek.
"Birdie, you should be sleeping, it's late"
"You weren't there", you mumble walking close to him to hug him.
"Can't sleep without me now?", whispers Sam, moving some strands of hair out of your face.
"You're warm. And I like sleeping with you because my brain stops working"
That got Sam's attention.
"It... stops?"
"Yes, it's like... my brain is so focused on you that it stops reading the things in the room", you hug him harder.
"Why does your brain focus on me, sweetheart?"
That name makes you smile, and Sam has to control himself. God, he just wants to kiss you. Your brain seems to be asleep. Bucky once said that sometimes, when you aren't fully awake, you answer whatever question they throw at you. Sam feels bad, but also feels like this can't be a good moment to get some useful information. If you like him back, he would confess once you are fully awake. But, if you don't have those feelings for him and Bucky is just an asshole, then he will just suck it up, and keep going with his life. Right now, he just needs to know and solve the mystery.
"Because my heart is so loud that my head can't think"
Sam feels his heart beat so fast that it could explode. Bucky was right, for once, and you have feelings for him. Now, he has to think how to confess properly and make it special. Because you deserve it.
"Let's get you to sleep, birdie. I'll go with you this time"
You smile, opening your arms for Sam, eyes still close. "Carry me"
He carries you for the second time that night to the bedroom, but this time, he lays next to you, wrapping his arm around his little birdie.
"Good night, Sam. I love you", you say getting as close to him as you can.
Sam knows that he will have to tell you about this when you wake up. And he smiles at the thought of your mortified expression when learning that your sleepy-self make some advances in the relationship. But that, is something for tomorrow. Now, he is going to sleep knowing that you, the woman of his dreams, is in love with him.
"Night, birdie. I love you, too"

Protocol 77
Pairing: Firefighter Steve Rogers x GN!Reader
Summary: THIS IS NOT A DRILL!; or where Steve has to save you for real now.
Warning: LONG ONE-SHOT, accident description, blood, injury, mention of DUI, steve feeling powerless/panicking, mentions of anxiety attack, swearing, steve is insecure/belittles himself, angst with good ending, some usage of y/n, bonus scene with protective steve/sam/bucky at the end.
Author's note: i knew the second part of Evacuation Drill had to be with a real one: steve really saving reader this time, this one being less sexy and a little more dramatic. there will be some inconsistencies in this fanfic as well (doctors can only give info about patients to family members, for example). most of the rescuing references came from this video, so you can watch to have a visual of what they are doing. also thank you so much for the feedback on the first part, i hope you guys like this one as well! gif credit to its owner.
Part 1
Tumblr media
When the crash happened, you weren't looking at your phone. It had been vibrating the whole day, begging for your attention but you didn't have the time to look at it. You had been driving home, exhausted. You had a really stressful day at your work, with your boss Jerry suddenly informing the team Friday morning that "they" had a huge project for Monday! It wasn't anyone's fault in the team except Jerry's, who had warned he needed that presentation to show the directors. Everyone was ordered to stay late that Friday, except Jerry, to finish the presentation. Your boss had left at 5 o'clock, on point, ordering no one to leave until those slides were ready and e-mailed to him.
You had a pretty competent team, so everyone worked together to finish. Leah was the first to leave; she had twins to take care and she couldn't pay extra for the nanny. She promised to continue her work at home. Polly also couldn't stay more; she took care of her sick grandma. Soon everyone started leaving due to their personal lives, promising to continue at home, except you. You believed in them. The team was strong, except for Jerry. They all looked at you as their boss figure anyway since they knew they couldn't count on Jerry. You wondered how he even got that boss position.
You were so deep in your thoughts, you didn't realize a huge car was speeding through the red light, directly towards you.
-x-
Steve Rogers watched as Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson played some ping pong. It had been a slow night. They had received a call from a cat trapped in a tree(Bucky affirmed over and over again that the old lady had a crush on Steve, that's why she kept calling), some teenagers started a fire in a trashcan in a park and a lady who called about her house being on fire. After a complete check-up in her house, with no sign of any fire anywhere, they realized her alarms were defective due to battery. She apologized profusely, giving them cookies.
"It's Friday night, soon we will probably have something," Natasha Romanoff stated on their way back to the station "At least, we got cookies."
Steve's life had changed in those a lot in those last couple of months: first, he had become an official firefighter. He loved his job, he loved helping people. He felt his purpose was being filled and he was happy. Proud of himself, he would have to admit.
Also, he had a new person in his life: you. He almost couldn't believe it. Since the evacuation drill, Sam gave him your phone number and you started exchanging texts daily. On your first date, he was extremely nervous, because Steve felt completely out of your league. You were so pretty, intelligent, successful, and well, he was just a once skinny kid from nowhere in particular. But for a miracle, you were interested in him. The first kiss came on that same night, outside your door.
Sam and Bucky were eager for all juicy details the following day and Steve could swear Natasha was listening to the conversation as well. He shared about the kiss, making Bucky celebrate and throw his fists in the air. Sam crossed his arms, stared at him very seriously. Sam made Steve promise he wouldn't hurt his best friend. Or else, they would have problems.
Steve twirled his phone in his hands, checking if there were any new messages from you. Nothing since 9 AM. You told him there was some critical project, Jerry again (gosh, he hated Jerry), and you probably would have to work late again. Since then Steve tried to call you at lunchtime and texted a few more times, during his free time, with no answer. Steve was tempted to ask Sam if he had heard from you when they heard the alarm.
Steve jumped from the chair, running to their truck followed closed by the rest of them. Natasha jumped in the driver's seat with Sam in the passenger seat. Bucky and Steve went behind them.
"What is it, what is it?" Bucky inquired, rubbing his hands in excitement.
"Car collision. A car was crossing the green light when another one hit it, at high speed, making the car flip two times and hit a pole. One driver is okay, but the police don't know the condition of the other one." Natasha informed them and Steve could hear Bucky almost cheer. She hushed to turn the siren, driving fast through the city. Lieutenant Natasha was the best driver in the whole station really.
It was a nice change of pace for that monotonous night, but why did Steve have a bad feeling about this?
-x-
When they arrived, police had already circled the area. There was a crowd forming, some people with their phones out. The police officer informed them the driver who caused the accident had only gotten some minor injuries. They were testing him for DUI at that moment, but they couldn't get any information from the other driver. Not good news: their victim was most likely unconscious.
"I hope they survived this. It looks so bad." The cop reported the team.
The car was destroyed, just a black mass laying on the side against the pole. It was hard to believe there was a human inside there. There were parts of it everywhere splattered on the street, proving the collision was violent.
"That driver must have come super fast. Jesus..." Bucky asserted, shaking his head.
Steve mentally wished the driver would be fine. It looked like there was no gas spilled so the driver could consider themselves very lucky. When they started getting closer, his bad feelings started to get worse. Steve unconsciously looked at Sam who seemed to have the same thoughts as him.
"I will check on the driver and then we can decide how we are going to take this person out," Natasha ordered and they all agreed. Steve knew exactly what that meant: if they were going to recover an injured person or possibly just a body.
Bucky helped Natasha get up into what seemed to be the passenger side and she turned on her flashlight, looking inside. For a moment, they couldn't see her head while she observed inside.
"Fuck..." Natasha cursed. That was strange. Natasha was their most experienced professional and the one that always kept her composure, no matter how bad things had gotten. When she lifted her head, her face had lost all color and her eyes went directly towards Sam and Steve. Bucky helped her get down.
"Lieutenant?" Sam wondered, giving a fast look in Steve's direction.
"There is no easy way to say this," Natasha murmured to herself, her eyes getting watery. Steve's heart was bumping against his chest as he waited for his Lieutenant to speak.
"Is the person alive or dead? Are you okay, Lieutenant?" Bucky questioned. They had never seen Natasha like this.
"It is (Y/N). It is (Y/N) inside that car." Natasha blurted.
Steve's heart stopped beating as his mind went blank. No, it couldn't be. Natasha had to be mistaken. You were safe and at home probably, where you were supposed to be. Safe and alive.
"Natasha, how-?" Bucky started asking, shocked when Sam ran to the car. He jumped to the passenger with no help, looking inside with his flashlight.
It was really you. He would recognize the face of his best friend anywhere. But it didn't look like you. Your head was bleeding. Your legs were bleeding. Your eyes were closed. Your body was immobile. Sam screamed your name once. Twice. You didn't move an inch.
"We have to get them out of here!" Sam's scream came in panic as his head raced with what needed to be done. They needed to get you out of there as soon as possible. He had to get you out of there.
Sam joined the others, Natasha still visibly shocked and Bucky looking between them, waiting for orders. The worse of them was Steve: he was frozen, his blue eyes focused on a random point. Sam knew there was no time for this. You needed them. All of them. He grabbed Steve by his neck and made him stare at his eyes.
"They need us, Rogers. Don't you dare to panic on this right now. We will take (Y/N) out of there."
Steve felt like he was slapped awake by Sam. He was right. You needed him more than ever now. Decided, he nodded. Natasha and Bucky, influenced by Sam's words, ran to the firetruck to grab the needed tools while Sam helped Steve to get up in the passenger side, to get a good look at you.
His eyes got teary as he saw your body. You were laying sideways, your face close to all the glass pieces on the floor. There was so much blood. You looked so hurt and small. He never thought he would have to see you like this in his line of duty. Steve wished he had super powers now: he wanted to rip off that door and take you away and cure you. Make sure nothing else could hurt you.
When Steve got down, Sam warned him Bucky and Natasha were already back. Steve cleaned his eyes, his body shaking with anger, sadness, and fear. In his very recent fireman career, he had never felt so weak before. He felt like he was 14 again when he couldn't protect himself from bullies, needing Bucky to save him. But this time it was even more serious, this was about someone he deeply loved and cared about.
Steve let his eyes wander to where the cops were keeping the bastard who hit you. He started to make his way there, his hands closed in fists. He just wanted the driver to feel a little bit of the pain you were feeling when Sam stood in his way.
"Rogers, don't you fucking dare! (Y/N) needs you now! Are you with us or not?"
"If they are dead, I swear to God, I will kill him," Steve promised, his tone low and dangerous.
"I know. We both will. But for now, let's focus on taking (Y/N) out of this car." Sam sounded serious and Steve knew he was telling the truth. He knew how much Sam loved you.
"ROGERS, WILSON! LESS TALKING!" It was Lieutenant Natasha now ordering now, her face red.
The plan was simple and they had done so many times: stabilize the car, locking it so it didn't turn while they were working on it. Remove the windshield to have access to you, place the neck brace, and check your vitals. Then pull the roof of the car, safely and slowly, using the rescue stretcher to safely remove your body, still held by the safety belt. Bucky had the neck brace ready which was the first thing they had to do when having access to your body. To not damage your spine, Steve thought, his heart heavy.
So they started working. Steve could feel Natasha stare at him and Sam at times. She had recovered faster from the shock of seeing your body and Sam as well, although Sam was as young as Steve in this. Steve let the adrenaline take over: he ignored all the noises, stares, and the presence of other people. There was just you and his team.
When stabilizing the car was done, it was time to cut the windshield. Sam did that part, carefully trying to not hurt you. As soon as the windshield came out, Bucky stepped in. He didn't look at the rest of the team as half of his body disappeared inside the car, checking for your vitals and putting on the neck brace, carefully. Steve was right behind him, observing nervously.
When Bucky exited the car, there was relief in his worried eyes.
"Still breathing and there is a pulse" Bucky stated. Natasha and Sam breath relieved, but Steve had to check for himself. Your body was cold. There was still breathing and a pulse but it was very weak.
"We need to get them out of here, now!" Steve roared. Natasha gave the hydraulic claw to his hands.
"You think you can do this, Steve?" Bucky inquired, unsure.
Steve nodded, without thinking twice. There was no more trace of fear or apprehensiveness on him anymore. His sole focus was on taking you out of there as fast as he could. Without hurting you.
-x-
The whole process didn't take him too long. After Steve was done cutting the roof, it didn't fall to the ground. The roof was supposed to stay in, to help them. Sam and Natasha put the board inside, adjusting your body to directly lay on it.
As they laid the roof down slowly, your body came down with it, laying to your side. Steve and Sam rushed to bring your body out, bending your knees and keeping your feet together. Steve's mind was racing to carry you out straight to the ambulance, but he kept his mind focused.
EMS rolled in with their stretcher and your body was carefully placed in there, still laying to your side. They rushed to cover your body with an aluminum blanket and rolled out of way in direction of their ambulance. Steve rushed to your side but before he could get inside the ambulance, the doctors closed in on his face.
"They are taking them to the closest hospital, five miles away. Come on, we will drive you there!" Sam warned and they all ran back to the firetruck, Steve jumping at the passenger seat now. Natasha turned on the fire alarm, driving straight to the hospital.
Steve could only wish for the best now.
-x-
You opened your eyes and wanted to close them immediately. There was a bright light everywhere and pain. Your whole body was hurting, from your head to your feet. Especially at your ribs. There was a distant electronic beeping sound. The room got on focus and you didn't recognize where exactly you were.
It looked like a hospital room. What had happened? All you remembered was driving back late from work then nothing else. Trying to lift yourself up to observe the place better, you felt gentle hands taking you back to the bed.
"Hey hey, please don't do that. You will hurt yourself."
You looked at the person speaking and blinked a few times. It was your boyfriend Steve Rogers. Dressed in full uniform, except for the helmet. His face was dirty and he looked extremely worried at you.
"Steve?" You barely recognized your voice. It felt like you hadn't spoken in ages. You cleared your dry throat and tried again "What happened?"
"You were in a car accident last night."
A car accident? But how? What?
"We were called in. I was called in. We took you out of there."
The realization slowly kicked in. You didn't remember arriving home last night. You lifted your hands up and saw a bandage on them. It hurt every time you breathed and your head felt so heavy. You touched your head and felt bandages everywhere.
"You guys saved me?" Steve nodded. You looked behind him on a sofa where you find his protective helmet. Steve had dark circles under his eyes, his blonde hair a mess. You don't think Steve noticed or cared about that at the time. So different from the normal Steve Rogers you were used to seeing. The one with his hair always down and tidy, clean face.
Because this Steve had gone through hell. After being left in there by the rest of the crew (Sam made him promise he would send updates as soon as he knew), Steve waited for news about your situation. The doctors had come out for what seemed years later to let him know your condition was serious but stable. You had broken ribs, a concussion (they had to do more exams to check on that), one of your legs and your arm were broken, and some internal bleeding in your belly. They would keep you in the hospital for a night or two to be cautious and until the exams were ready.
After texting the group chat and calling Sam to confirm your condition was serious but stable, Sam told him he would be at the hospital as soon as his shift was done. Sam also informed him of Natasha's message not to worry, they could talk about Steve's shift later on. He rapidly turned off the call when a nurse said he was allowed in. Most eyes turned towards him as he walked on his way to your room. People probably wondering if there was a fire nearby.
When he saw you sleeping in your bed, Steve broke down. The nurse left him for privacy and Steve tried to hold back his tears, putting his hand over his mouth. That didn't work. He turned around not bearing to look at you in that hospital bed. Steve was trying to control himself as his sobs just got worse. His breath became rapid as his heart was beating faster than yours, according to the heartbeat machine. His body hunched over and Steve held his knees, the tears getting worse. He barely could breathe right now. What an embarrassment he was. He never got to stop being that weak teenager who cried when things got difficult. You laying down in that bed proved how worthless he truly was.
Steve looked at you over his shoulder again and remembered Sam's words "(Y/N) needs you." Steve closed his eyes, breathing in and out slowly. In and out with your healthy face in his mind. Your happy face. "(Y/N) wouldn't want to see him like this" a mix of Bucky and Sam's voices came into his head and he opened his eyes, feeling much calmer now. He took his helmet, throwing at a sofa nearby, grabbing a chair to sit near you. He had been awake the whole night, waiting for you to open your eyes.
"How long l have been out?" Your voice brought him back to the present.
"Five or six hours. Your family has been informed and they are on their way. Sam is appearing soon as well." Steve stated and you tried to nod, with no success.
"Am I gonna be okay? Did the doctors say anything?"
"They will keep you at night for observation due to a concussion you have. They expect full recovery from you, love." Steve answered, looking down. It was all his fault. If he only had taken you out of that car sooner.
Your hand appeared in his line of vision and Steve lifted his head up. You were crying, desperate for him to hold a part of you. Steve held your hand between his hands, kissing each one of your injured fingers.
"I am sorry. I am so sorry, (Y/N)." Steve mumbled, close to breaking down again.
"Thank you for saving me." You replied back, trying to clean some of the tears with your free hands. You wanted him to hug you, to hold you. You couldn't imagine what he had been through and just wanted to murmur that everything was okay, you both would be okay.
"If I lost you if somehow I didn't save you there, I-I don't know..." Steve confessed, holding your hand against his forehead, tears flowing down his eyes again.
"I am okay. You are okay, Steve." You comforted him between your sobs and without controlling himself, Steve got up from his chair, putting his arms over your shoulders.
It was really what you both needed at the moment. To embrace and to feel you were alive. You were going to be okay. You both were going to be okay.
Bonus:
Jerry got in the Emergency room later that afternoon with a bouquet in his hands. He had heard about your accident from a group message and felt he had to appear. Most of your co-workers had visited you already so he thought he had to show his face, show some sympathy and even cry a little bit if needed.
What surprised him was the number of firefighters in the waiting area. At first, he thought there was a fire going on in the hospital, but since he didn't see anyone screaming, running, or being evacuated, he asked for directions to your room.
What a nice boss he was, Jerry thought to himself. All he needed was a selfie with you in the hospital bed and it would make the directors see how benevolent and how much he cared for his employees.
Jerry knocked on the door and without waiting for any answer, opened it. Damn, you looked bad. He barely recognized with all the bandages around your head. You seemed to be asleep as well, so easy picture. Sitting by your side was a very tall and attractive fireman, with messed blonde hair and blue eyes. He looked as Jerry walked in.
"May I help you?"
Jerry noticed two other men, dressed in casual clothes. One was in the corner of the sofa, black hair, head against the sofa with his eyes closed. The other one was sitting on the edge of the sofa, behind the tall blonde one, his black eyes scanning Jerry up and down. All of those men were so attractive. You never told Jerry you had such sexy friends.
"Y-yes. Hi. My name is Jerry."
The two men waited.
"I am (Y/N)'s boss. I heard about the accident and decided to come to check on them. They don't look very well, so I brought flowers" Jerry announced, slowly getting close to the bed. There were flowers everywhere and get-well cards.
The tall blonde one was up from the chair before Jerry could get closer to the bed.
"I don't think you should be here, Jerry." The dark-eyed one said, getting up as well. Jerry gulped, confused.
"I-I don't know..."
"I don't know if it is your fault or not, Jerry." said the one that had his eyes closed. He lifted up his face from the sofa, his blue eyes piercing him with disgust " But everyone in this room has been kinda pissed off with the asshole that almost killed our friend. And since we can't take on him since he is in jail and (Y/N) was working late because of you, well..."
"It is not my fault this accident happened! I didn't make them work so late!" Jerry tried to justify and he didn't even know why. It wasn't his fault you have gotten yourself into an accident, anyway.
"You are lying. They had been working late because of you. (Y/N) woke up and told me about the project." The blonde tall one said, dangerously getting close to him.
Jerry's soul had instantly left his body. He felt his legs trembling as he had three pairs of angry eyes at him. He could try to run but what about those firefighters outside? It was clear they were there for you. He was screwed.
"It is not my fault, okay?! (Y/N) has been clumsy for so long, never looking where they are going. It was a matter of time before something like this would happen. If I lose my job Monday because of them, I will, I will..."
Jerry felt being pulled by his shirt and shoved against a wall, the bouquet falling to the ground. The tall blonde one was holding him there, staring at him as if he could kill him. Jerry's legs were trembling even more as he saw the other men get up. Oh, he was so freaking screwed. He closed his eyes, whimpering in fear.
"He isn't even worth it, Steve."
Steve held him there for a few more seconds, before letting him go. Jerry had to hold into the wall to not fall to the ground.
"Get the fuck out of here." Steve warned, his voice low. Then he turned away from Jerry, his attention going back to you.
Jerry didn't need to hear twice. He ran away from that hospital, cursing you and your extremely sexy friends mentally. When you got back to work, if you ever did, he had some questions to make you.

Favourite Stucky Fics of 2022
This feels a little bit like a farewell, but don’t worry... I’m never too far away! Here’s my favourite Stucky fics of 2022 :)
Complete
💙 FUBAR by Ginny_Potter/ @hipsterdiva (Post-Endgame Fix-It | 64K | Explicit): Steve jumps in the past to return the Infinity Stones and doesn’t come back. When Bucky travels to 2012 to look for him, the Ancient One tells him just one thing: “Captain Rogers decided to move on”. Back in the present, Sam Wilson is more driven than ever to find his friend, believing him to be lost in the Quantum Realm but Bucky knows, just knows, that Steve made a choice and the choice was to stay in the past. Struggling to cope with a world he doesn’t recognise, Bucky falls in an addictive spiral of jumping up and down the timeline under the vigilant eye of the Ancient One, just to see Steve one more time, just to get his next fix. And in doing so, without even realising it, he heals and in the end finds out if he was right. Or, Time Travel is addictive, Steve is lost, and Bucky slowly realises that healing together is better than healing alone.
💙 he said, there’s a paradise beneath me (she said, am I supposed to bleed) by voxofthevoid/ @voxofthevoid (Hunkyclunks aka Winter Soldier Bucky/Modern Beefy Steve, BDSM | 23K | Explicit): “If you kiss me like that, Rogers, you’re gonna have a hard time convincing me you want to fuck me.” “Can’t have that,” Steve says and— And the fucker bends Bucky back like this is a goddamn romcom and kisses the everloving shit out of him. (Part 1 of some sweet violent urge)
💙 The Devil and Captain Rogers by kocuria-visuals (kocuria)/ @kocuria, zilia/ @ms-zilia (Post-Avengers, Canon Divergent | 55K | Mature): Steve Rogers woke up in the twenty-first century and joined the Avengers to defeat Loki and save New York. But afterwards, he finds himself struggling to adjust to his new circumstances, desperately lonely and missing Bucky more than ever. Except Transfers must have magic to be bonded and as Izuku steps into the dark water, it shows... nothing. Now stuck in this world for as long as it takes for a bonded pair to form, Izuku decides to explore and discover the world around him.
Second Chance Ranch - When life hasn’t gone the way you wanted, shouldn’t you get a second chance? The Vengeful Bride
Pairing: Sarah x Bucky
Rating: Teen and Up (I think). The pirates aren't nice and neither are the mermaids actually. Mentions of violence, gore and sexual harassment. Bad ass Sarah Wilson. 💪🏾
Summary: On an island somewhere in the Caribbean, there is a story about a town that nearly got destroyed by a greedy mayor and some pirates and were saved by the vengeful ghost of a bride who had drowned on her wedding day.
Prompt: Pirates/Mermaid AU
___________
On an island somewhere in the Caribbean, there is a story about a town that nearly got destroyed by a greedy mayor and some pirates and were saved by the vengeful ghost of a bride who had drowned on her wedding day.
The Widow Sarah Wilson had always been a strong, beautiful wild creature. Her parents had three children, two sons who prospered elsewhere and their daughter. When she was a child, she’d run barefoot all over the town and spend hours splashing and swimming in the sea. Other mothers would’ve considered her unmanageable, but she was also an intelligent girl who could perform the maidenly duties required of her very well, she just didn’t care for them. Her embroidery skills were flawless, her fingers flew cleanly over the piano playing dulcet music, she danced like a flower in the wind and her penmanship was enviable. However, she would much rather be at sea, on the family boat, reading books, caring for the wildlife and basking in the waves.
When she reached her majority, it seemed like no one was good enough for her. Amongst the swath of rosy maidens looking to find husbands, she was the bird of paradise who lured them without even trying. It seemed no one would tame her, but to everyone’s surprise she married! Her mother made the match to Mr. Ashley Wilson, a man who was nearly twice her age, recently widowed, very rich and looking for a fresh young bride. Many thought Sarah would put up a fight, but she obediently acquiesced to her mother’s desires and married the older man. She had been a resplendent bride and Mr. Wilson was said to have been gleeful at the fact that he got himself the untamable Sarah for a wife.
They were pleasantly married for a few years until the day came that Mr. Wilson was stricken with a stroke and became a bed-ridden invalid. Now the wild, beautiful Sarah became her husband’s nursemaid and the whole town clicked their tongues in sympathy. What a waste of beauty! Then after struggling for a year more, Mr. Wilson died, leaving his wife a young widow. What a shame! Now she lived alone in the huge house by the sea with all the wealth her old husband had left behind. She moved her now ailing mother into the house so she could see to her needs like a good diligent daughter. Poor Sarah, people murmured, so wealthy but bound to her ill relations.
What the people didn’t know was that for as long as Sarah had the sea, she had never once been alone nor neglected.
Her father had been from a world of water, filled with people called by many names: the Aycayia, the Maneli, Njuzu, or Sirenas; mermaids in simple English. He fell in love with her mother and sacrificed his home to be with her. Their children had a rare choice when they reached their majority, to become a part of the merfolk or to stay human. Her elder brother chose humans, her second took to the sea. Sarah herself loved the sea as well, because it was the sea that held her greatest love.
As a child she encountered a merboy called Bucky who had first been her dearest friend and playmate. He taught her to swim, to turn her legs into a sleek tail, to hold her breath, and they explored many of the inaccessible places around the island. Later as they grew, they became sweethearts, exchanging words of unending affection. He’d become a tall, broad shouldered, handsome warrior, with long dark hair and blazing blue eyes. She ripened into curves, balanced by fierce brown eyes and generous lips that had become irresistible to him. He wanted her to join him in the waters and she was more than willing. However, she was her mother’s only girl and she loved her deeply. So much so that she begged her daughter to stay with her at least until she died. After having lost his father, Sarah found she couldn’t find it in her to abandon her mother and despite her desire to be in the sea with Bucky she decided to be a dutiful daughter first.
Her mother never liked Bucky, thinking him wild and dangerous, so it was rather mean-spirited of her to make Sarah marry another man. She had hoped that by providing her daughter with every earthly comfort that she would be satisfied, but the old woman underestimated how passionately they loved each other.
In a secret cavern she quietly told him what would occur, and he of course did not take it well.
Bucky had been furious. “Your mother is a menace! Why would you agree to this!! I will kill that old fool before I let him have an inch of you!”
“Bucky-” She tried to explain.
“You think I would sit and allow myself to be set aside??”
“No! I will not leave you!” She protested.
“You are!!” He snapped, his eyes growing watery. “How would you feel if I set you aside?”
Sarah knew that abandonment meant death to a merfolk, because once love was given it could not be returned, so he could waste away, starved of her love. “Please Bucky don’t leave me! I take no pleasure in this but what can I do? Leave my mother to her misery? She lost her love too and clings to ways to keep me close.”
“She means to kill us.” He growled as jealousy seized him and he began to ravish her with kisses and love bites. Sarah clutched him, urging him on, wanting only the pleasure he could give her.
“I won’t let us part,” She panted, moaning as he tongued her breasts. “I will keep us together.”
Together they came up with a plan that while not perfect would be enough to satisfy their needs.
On her wedding night, a wild, beautiful Sarah Wilson waited with bated breath as Bucky, on two human feet, nude and wet with the salt of the sea on his skin, slipped into her new house, entered her room and deflowered his darling love. It was everything they had imagined it would be. She did away with her robe and threw herself naked into his arms. He carried her to the bed and let the netting wrap around them as they made love for the first time. They had played and touched before, but their first joining was infinitely sweeter than that.  While the servants thought that the grunts and moans were of the newly wed couple, it was Bucky between her thighs, muscles flexing, tightening as he thrust between her silky thighs. Sarah writhed and arched against him, swimming in ecstasy and clutching him tight as the pleasure waves of their orgasm drowned them both.
Where was her husband in all this? Drugged and deep in the throes of a hallucinogenic sleep that brought him sweet dreams of his new wife. That was how it went for years. Encouraged by his wife to have a drink before laying with her, he never knew that all those times he dreamt his encounters with her when in reality it was another man, a creature from the sea, that lay with his wife and pleasured her throughout the night. When he had his stroke, it made their life much easier. She no longer had to drug him to be with Bucky and when he died it was all the better. Her mother suspected something amiss but dared not voice it, least it fell into the wrong ears. The servants were perplexed by the odd wet spots that appeared occasionally around the house. One overly curious man tried to find the source of the spots and was discovered dead at the foot of the stairs, his neck broken and a look of utter shock on his pale face.
Bucky would allow no one to come between him and his love.
Now Sarah was a widow and a wealthy one at that. Free once more she resumed doing the things she loved, and no one gave it any thought. After all she was a rich, respectable widow dutifully caring for her mother; it was admirable.
“I tire of this half-life, Sarah.” Bucky said to her one night as they lay in her bed. “I want you home.”
Sarah caressed the long, wet hair from his face. “I want to, Bucky, you know I do, but I promised my mother to wait until she passed.”
“So it’s her death I require.” He growled, a hint of sharp teeth catching in the candlelight.
“Please don’t!”
He calmed himself. “I won’t, but I just love you so much and this waiting hurts me. To be so far from you is torture.”
She understood. Merfolk suffered when parted from their loved ones and she felt the painful ache just being half. The ache in her lover must have felt worse. “I do not wish for my mother’s death, but she is becoming frailer. It won’t be long.”
They held each other close during the night until dawn came, and Bucky reluctantly slipped away back to the sea. Sarah watched him go, conflicted by the burdens in her heart.
______________________-----
It happened that the governor of their town passed away and the homeland sent a new mayor to watch over them. Upon the arrival of Mayor Forks, the people knew they were in for some trouble. He was large, fat with grasping fingers and a wandering stare. The way his eyes trailed over everything of value and every pretty face instantly made the citizens wary.
Tax money immediately started to go missing, causing Forks to raise them to meet the quota. Unsavory looking men were permitted to enter the town and the mayor’s palace suddenly acquired some ugly guards. People grumbled and began to lament. The mayor had always been the guest of honor at the first dance of the season, and it was with gritted teeth that the young ladies were forced to dance with him, his hands pawing around.
Sarah had heard about this mayor but had studiously avoided him. She usually stood amongst the married and widowed ladies commenting on the matches although she was still young. The mayor took one look at her and was instantly arrested. A rich, beautiful widow! How could he pass her up?
Much to Sarah’s horror and disgust, Mayor Forks began to pursue her, and she absolutely refused him. It was the talk of the town. The mayor would send letters, flowers and gifts to her house and she’d send every item back. Twice he’d tried to enter her house only to be told her was either not at home (she was) or indisposed (she wasn’t). The one time he got close to her during a tea party, he slipped his hand onto her thigh, and she “accidentally” spilled hot tea on his hand. Using her ruined dress as an excuse to leave early she complained heatedly to her mother about it.
“We should leave this place before he does something worse to get you alone with him.” Her mother suggested.
“Mother, you wouldn’t be able to make such a journey. Plus, everything I need is here. I shan’t leave just because of him!”
“That’s because you won’t leave…because of him.”
Sarah gave her a hooded glare. “I love Bucky. I gave into your wishes to marry, and I obeyed, mother, but he is the only one I will ever allow to truly have me.”
“Have you told him about this mayor?”
“Indeed. It has become a sore subject.”
Bucky barely tolerated her first husband and was furious at the realization that now there was another suitor. Sarah was more than fine with him killing the fat pig, but it proved to be more difficult than assumed.
“Those men he has around his house are always patrolling and they’re not just anyone, they’re pirates.”
Pirates and merfolk shared the oceans but that did not make them allies. Thieves, rapists, opportunists, they would gladly take advantage of any mermaid or merman they found. Therefore, it was in a merfolk’s best interest to kill them. Seasoned pirates scoffed at the fantasy of beautiful, playful mermaids; they knew the truth, some had the scars to prove it.
Bucky was a warrior and was not shy about spilling blood but doing it alone amongst a band of unscrupulous pirates was risky. He urged caution and she agreed, sensing that eventually her rejections would cause Mayor Forks to do something more diabolical.
Then, on a beautiful festival day, the mayor revealed his grand gesture. During his speech he publicly proposed to Sarah thinking that having an audience would finally force her to agree, but she sneered at him and openly refused in front of the whole town. At that point the mayor’s thin veneer of civility fell and his true monstrosity emerged.
Slowly more unsavory pirates were permitted into the town, they menaced the people but were momentarily held back and the people were scared at what would happen next. Finally at a dinner party Mayor Forks made his announcement.
“I want you all to spread the word. I want to make sure everyone knows.” He began. “That I will not be humiliated by a woman in such a way. Since she cannot acquiesce kindly then force shall be necessary. If the Widow Sarah Wilson does not marry me within a fortnight, then my companions will gather all the ladies of the town, rich or poor and I shall let them have a grand time with them as they see fit. If any survive the event, they can return to their families. Do not attempt to leave as I have the ports well watched. Instead, may I suggest the good people focus on getting the good widow to prepare for her wedding day and resign herself to be my obedient little wife.”
The horror swept throughout the entire town. Cries and wailings echoed everywhere. Instantly the town turned on Sarah, demanding that she submit herself to the mayor. Then sensing she might try to flee he took it one step further. Upon his orders the pirates attacked, grabbing the girls and taking them into the local prisons. Screams and prayers could be heard as the mayor decided to hold the girls ransom to ensure that Sarah would appear. She was stunned by the outcry and for the first time felt a finger of fear up her spine.
Bucky had enough. “Come with me now. He’s given you no option but the sea.”
“And leave all these maidens to be made whores of?? I cannot be so heartless!” She argued.
“The town is against you!”
“The town is afraid! You cannot blame them for trying to save their daughters!”
“So you will do this? You’ll give yourself to that pig??” he asked, almost trembling with rage.
“I must and yet I cannot endure it. I must kill him and his pirates.” She declared coldly.
Bucky was surprised. Sarah had always been gentle despite her fieriness so to hear her speak of bloodshed was new.
“Do you plan to drug him?” He asked tentatively.
“No, he requires something much crueler.” She replied.
_______________________----
The mayor arranged the whole event, spending lavishly as he soon expected to have all of Sarah’s wealth in his coffers by the end of the night. The whole town showed up to this wedding, though there was no joy amongst anyone except the mayor, who looked at his intended bride garishly dressed in a gown he ordered her to wear with lewd anticipation. Sarah barely gave her consent and refused to offer her lips for a kiss and frowned at the sloppy feel of his mouth against her cheek. He tried to paw at her on the carriage ride to their reception. She slapped him and he slapped her back. Enraged, she struck him hard across the face with the back of her hand and he sat back stunned by the violence and strength. She hissed at him, and he swore he saw sharp teeth, but before he could question her they reached the governor’s palace and she nearly leapt out of the carriage to avoid him.
The festivities were hardly that. People didn’t want to dance to the music and hardly anyone ate; their minds preoccupied with their daughters and ashamed to look at the unfortunate bride in the eye. A few even apologized but Sarah paid them no mind, focused on what she’d have to do to survive the night with her grotesque new husband.
Getting drunk and feeling good, Forks decided to find his wife for a dance. Sarah refused him, but he grabbed her waist and forced her against him.
“You’re mine now. You do what I say like a good little wife.”
“You are mistaken if you think I’ll be so submissive to a pig like you.” She snapped.
The man chuckled drunkenly. “You forgot that everything that was once yours is now mine.” He hiccupped and she could smell the alcohol in his breath. “In fact, I already sent my men to your house to empty it of all your fine things. I plan to make a profitable sale of the property afterward.”
“How dare you! My mother will be scared to death!” she said, gritting her teeth as he grabbed her buttock.
“No, your mother will be dead. I have no patience for a dying old hag, so I told my men to deal with her quietly.”
“NO!” she cried, and all her careful planning came to a grinding halt as she picked up a dinner knife and stabbed him in the chest in front of all their guests. He cried out in agony, and everyone gasped, but Sarah didn’t care as she picked up her skirts and ran out of the palace to go save her mother.
Spotting a carriage, she pushed away the driver before climbing onto the seat and urged the pair of horses to gallop through the night streets.
Meanwhile, her mother was gasping for breath as she tried to flee her assailants. The horrible men had broken into the house, killed the butler and started ransacking the place. The servants fled, screaming, leaving the old woman to fend for herself. Terrified, the lady stumbled down the stairs, hurting her ankles, but she could not stop. Desperately she tried to escape to the beach only for two men to give chase, hooting and laughing as she stumbled and fell on the uneven sand. They grabbed her, dragging her into the cold water and started to dunk her in, enjoying her cries of distress.
A sudden unnatural swish of the water distracted them momentarily, then a manlike creature jumped out of the waves, grabbed one of the pirates and pulled him effortlessly into the sea. Terrified the other man released the old woman, who gasped and stumbled, and pulled out a knife, staring wildly into the dark waters. Kelp suddenly flew at him, wrapping around his neck, yanking him into the waves. There was a momentary struggle before his head, and only his head, bobbed up to the surface.
Sarah made it to the house, saw the disaster, but the moonlight reflected the pale gown her mother was dressed in, laying in the sand in the distance and she ran down to her side.
“Mama! Mama!” She cried in despair as she reached the beach and turned her mother over to check on her.
The old woman sighed weakly, wet, sticky with sand but very much alive. “My baby.”
“Mama! Oh God I was so scared!” She wept even as she smiled in relief.
“What happened to the mayor?”
“I stuck a knife in him. Hopefully he’s bleeding out like-”
A hand reached out, grabbing the back of Sarah’s neck and began to strangle her. It was Mayor Forks, bleeding but still very much alive.
“You bitch!! You thought you could get rid of me! I’m your husband! I’ll teach you how to behave! I’ll make an example of you!”
Her mother tried to rise and get him off her daughter, but he kicked her aside and dragged Sarah into the waves, still strangling her.
Sarah hissed and fought, but the weight of the now wet dress was heavy and from the angle she was at she could not fight him as he forced her head into the waters.
“I’ll teach you! You stupid bitch!” He shouted as he tried to drown her. Unexpectedly there was a yank as if something was pulling on his bride. Startled, the mayor loosened his hold on her, which was a mistake because the moment he did, she was abruptly taken from him and dragged further into the sea.
Frantically he tried to seek her, hoping to catch onto the heavy skirts. “No! No! You don’t get to slip that easy from me! You’re mine! MINE!” Eventually he felt the fabric and pulled it up with all his might, only to find it empty of its owner.
Forks was mystified, then heard a splash. Looking up he saw a pale-skinned, nude, dark haired man glaring at him with deadly intentions. Before he could make demands, Sarah rose beside the man in her shift that clung like thin tissue over her beautiful body, and she too looked at him cruelly.
“Get back here. I’m not done with you.” The fat man snarled.
“I’m not done with you either.” She hissed, revealing sharp teeth. “My plan was to see you dead tonight and I intend for that to happen.”
“You…I will have every woman violated if you touch me!” He threatened, a surge of fear rearing his head when he realized that the pair were approaching him menacingly, and he had no real way to protect himself.
“The only one who’s going to be violated is you little pig.” Bucky growled, large hands revealing long claws. “You’ve fattened yourself plenty. Time to carve you up.”
The man now looked over at his bride and saw as hint of sharp teeth he thought he’d glimpsed earlier were now on full display. “Still want that kiss?”
He turned and ran and promptly lost his footing in the waves. Sharp hands grabbed his ankles, pulling him into the sea, dragging him to and fro until he was crying for mercy. He managed to scramble to the beach, his clothes in tatters, but they shot out of the water, like an orca catching prey. Pulled close, he was turned onto his back, giving him only a glimpse of the sleek, dark, tails and fins before they ripped him open. He screamed and screamed until he died with a pathetic whimper.
Sarah wanted his body to be found on the beach, so they left him there to rot. Glancing up she then observed the jail where the girls were being held. “I need to go save them. Once these pirates realize that he is dead they will run wild and do as they please.”
“You are free, and your mother is safe. You’ve risked enough for these people.” Bucky protested.
“I love you, Bucky, but you either help me or stay out of my way.” She replied before diving into the water.
He growled before dutifully following his beloved mate.
___________________------
The tension in the prison was high. Word had spread that the bride had stabbed the groom and now no one could find either of them. The girls didn’t know what that meant, but the loud arguments going on did not put them at ease.
“What do we do?”
“Are we still getting paid??”
“Fuck it all! I’ve been itching for that one all day!” A particularly ugly pirate approached the cells, causing the girls to huddle themselves in one corner.
“Ain’t no one saving you now little girls! Time to pay up!”
They cried and whimpered in fear.
A harsh breeze suddenly ran through the corridors of the jail, blowing the flames out, leaving them all in darkness with only the pale moonlight. A soft, dulcet voice echoed through the halls and the pirates began to unsheathe their swords.
“We need to get out of here, now!” And older pirate ordered.
“The fuck?? Why? What’s going on??”
A noise echoed down a darkened hall, sending several of the girls scrambling to the other side of their cells to avoid whatever was coming.
“Out! Out now!” The old man’s throat suddenly opened up as a dark-skinned, clawed hand dug through it and yanked the man violently against the wall, smashing his face on the stone. The younger man fumbled his pistol and tried to aim it, but a pale creature attacked him from the side and ripped him open.
The girls huddled, frightened as the sound of screams and muscles being ripped apart echoed throughout the prison. Those who were brave enough to look were shocked to see the nearly naked form of the Widow Sarah, killing the pirates in horrendous fashion. She looked nothing like the dignified widow, but like a demoness, her hair long and free, her white shift blood stained and her eyes burned with rage.
Bucky took a cutlass and used it to kill any pirates outside the prison, showing no mercy. Merfolk were fine fighters in and out of water, but there was a limit and Bucky knew that he could not remain exposed for too long. In the distance he heard more shouting and peered over a ledge to see it was the town’s people rushing with muskets, pitchforks and torches coming to save their daughters. Quickly he ran back into the building to get Sarah.
“They’ve come for their daughters!” he announced, ignoring the corpses. “We have to leave.”
Sarah agreed, then glanced at one girl still brave enough to look. “See to my mother.”
The lovers turned and fled. Running, they reached the edge of a small cliff and dived into the cool, dark waters. As soon as they reached a certain distance, Sarah gladly removed her shift and allowed her body to make its change, turning limbs into a sleek tail and fin that resembled a dolphin. Bucky smiled, pleased to finally have his beloved all to himself and gathered her in his arms for a kiss.
Home, he urged her, blue eyes blazing with love.
Home, she agreed, smiling back and allowed him to pull her into the comforting darkness of the sea and towards the place she had longed for.

The girls told a wild tale about Sarah coming to save them, of ripping pirates to pieces before disappearing like smoke. Men went to the widow’s house and found chaos and Sarah’s poor mother shivering quietly on the stoop. She spoke of her daughter being strangled by Mayor Forks which sent them all to the beach where they found the remains of the political pig being feasted on by the seagulls and wild dogs. Her wedding dress was found clumped against some rocks and they made the tragic conclusion that they had probably killed each other, and her unfortunate corpse was dragged into the sea. How then did it explain what the girls saw? Clearly, they were overwrought and delusional, but that didn’t explain the dozens of dead pirates. The one girl who had been brave enough to look declared that Sarah must’ve returned as a vengeful spirit to save them and they owed her a debt of gratitude. Shocked and a little frightened, the citizens agreed and mobilized.
Quickly they took their daughters home and began to cleanse their town of the mayor and his evil. The elites, not nearly so willing to believe in the supernatural but also not willing to tempt fate, did their part. Craftily they spread the rumor of a pirate attack that killed their mayor and several others including the wealthy widow. Fortunately, her mother lived, and they made sure that her house was restored, that she was safe and even summoned her son to come fetch her.
The old woman was grateful for their kindness but wasn’t a fool. She knew what had become of her daughter and what had transpired. Bittersweetly, she walked the shore of the beach, staring out into the sea knowing that her daughter was now living happily below the cold depths with her true love. Although she did not keep her promise to her mother, it didn’t hurt so much. She was a mother, she understood and in the end all she wanted was her children’s happiness. Her eldest son would be arriving soon to take her with him to his home, so at least she wouldn’t be alone and when the Lord finally took her, she would rest at ease, knowing that all was well with her kin.
The house and all the goods inside were sold and soon the old woman boarded a ship that belonged to her son, who saw to her comfort. Looking back as her island home grew smaller, she and her oldest son noticed something or someone bobbing around in the middle of the sea. It was Sarah. She waved at them and blew her mother a kiss. They waved back and she blew a kiss back, stifling tears.
Sarah watched as the ship disappeared over the horizon. Bucky popped up beside her, glanced at the ship, then kissed her naked shoulder. “We need to go, my love.”
“I know. I just wanted to say good-bye one last time.” she replied, her eyes watery.
“You don’t regret us…do you?” He asked worriedly.
She smiled and wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders. “Never. I regret nothing. I love you, Bucky and there’s no place I’d rather be.”
He smiled triumphantly before kissing his true love and sank them under the cool, blue depths where they could revel in their passion more freely.
The story of the vengeful bride was told amongst the daughters who passed it to their children who then carried it along to their own. A few claimed that on the anniversary of her death one could see her wandering the beach in her wedding gown singing a sad song. Few were brave to see if it was true, the rich preferred to ignore it, but the commoners often left trinkets and food in thanks for her help. Some called her an angel, others a devil, but no one considered her a mermaid which was just fine with the merfolk who didn’t care for human attention. As for Sarah, she didn’t care of what was said, she was safe and loved, wrapped in the arms of her beloved Bucky and that was all that mattered.
The End

Keep It (for now) (safe)
For @samtember2022 Prompt: boat
"Hey, how'd it go?" Sam asked as Sarah came in the door. Well, she was trying to get inside. Sam was kind of crowding her as he took bags and fidgeted and waited for an answer.
"It was fine. Weird." Sarah managed to step around him and set the last of the shopping down on the island counter. Sam pretended to be focused on putting away cold foods.
"Weird how?" he asked. "That banker didn't give you more trouble did he?"
Outside, low rumbling thunder rolled and the pattering rain picked up. Sam tried to focus on the comforting noises but he was finding it very difficult.
"No, nothing like that," Sarah assured. "The payment went through and the recurring deposits are set up. It's just that..." She reached into her bag and pulled out a carefully tri-folded piece of paper. "This note came through with the payment," she said and passed it over.
Sam scanned over the payment information. Everything looked right. But, indeed, there was a memo attached. It read: Hi M(r)s. Wilson. I don't think I'll be able to get the boat from you until at least the new year. Please continue to use it and enjoy it until then. I don't want it sitting dead in the water. I will pay for any repairs needed for damages that occur between then and now. Thank you for keeping it safe for me.
Sam frowned. "You don't think he's going back on the deal," he suggested.
Sarah chewed on her lower lip, a tic she'd gotten from their father, and then shook her head. "No. Even if he was, he paid almost half already."
Sam grunted in agreement as he read the note again. He'd known selling the boat was going to be odd, but he'd thought the oddness would come from losing part of his childhood. Hell, part of his family, honestly. He had not expected the buyer to be so weird. From the fact that Sam and Sarah actually didn't know who he was, to the fact that he offered twice what they were asking, to this now. Sam had understood wanting to do everything through the bank, but they didn't even have a name to go with the transactions. Sam didn't even know how he'd heard about the boat in the first place.
"Hey, Sarah," Bucky greeted as he came into the living room from the utility room down the hall, a basket of laundry balanced on his hip. He leaned over it to kiss her cheek. "How was your day? Hope you didn't get too soaked."
"No," Sarah assured. "Just ran errands. Can you help Sam? I have to go get the boys--"
"Hey, relax. Sam can handle the groceries, I'll go to the school to pick up Cass and AJ. You take it easy. You just got home."
Sam made a face at him as Sarah smiled and tsked. "You never offer to help me kick my feet back," Sam accused.
Bucky shrugged, hiking the basket onto his side again. "Earn it," he taunted back and disappeared before Sam could throw a bag of broccoli at him.
-------------
"I dunno, maybe he's from somewhere cold. I hated being on the docks in winter," Bucky said that evening while he and Sam sprawled across folding chairs and the edge of the boat. The storm had ebbed enough to reveal a glorious sunset and it had become something of a tradition, with skies like this, for them to see the night in on the boat. Sam hadn't really realized how close they were to possibly losing this. Though he was pretty sure Bucky would be just as happy sitting on the beach or the porch.
"Yeah, but this isn't New York," Sam pointed out. "It's not even cool down here yet."
"Gotta take the boat somewhere," Bucky pointed out.
"I dunno. It just makes me uneasy. Like he's going to suddenly change his mind."
"He offered to pay for repairs. He's already given you money."
Sam sighed and clicked his tongue against the back of his teeth. "He can ask for it back. I mean, all of that money is basically unusable right now."
"I think you're thinking about it too much," Bucky sighed. He tipped his head back against the seat and shut his eyes. "Maybe he's sponsoring it."
"The boat is not a race horse."
"There’s an idea. Let's put a huge engine in it. Do open ocean, long distance racing."
Sam rolled his eyes and knocked his hand against Bucky's chest. "You really wouldn't worry about it?" he asked.
Bucky settled further indy the seat and shook his head without opening his eyes. "I wouldn't," he promised.
So Sam sat back too and tried not to think about it.
-----------
"Sam," Sarah said in a way which didn't immediately raise goosebumps but which did make his stomach turn over.
Bucky and the boys were still engrossed in a very complicated game on the floor involving Power Rangers, GI Joes, Transformers, and about every Lego and racecar in the house. Sam was pretty sure Bucky was losing. But as long as they were occupied. He stepped around the field of play and came over to Sarah, taking a piece of mail out of her hands.
"He post-poned again," she said before Sam could even read it.
The payments had been coming in right on time. With the months since the initial payment and an extra "Christmas time bonus," the rest of the amount was half paid. The boat was, by all accounts, the buyer's now. 75% paid off. Still, they'd just had a New Years party on the boat and they'd repainted the cabin and the buyer had bought new windows as well. They'd even taken it fishing a few times, to test the rigs and nets.
It still felt like their boat.
"I guess all we can do is keep it floating," Sam suggested. He tapped the paper against the counter twice before handing it back to Sarah. "Trust that this guy knows what he wants."
"I'd trust that a lot more if I knew who he even was," Sarah pointed out. "Do you think it's someone in town?"
"Nah. Why would they hide it? And why wouldn't they move it to their own pier?"
In the living room, plastic clattered and AJ crowed in victory while Bucky accused him of cheating.
"You're down until the oil change happens," Cass said factually. Bucky snorted and Sam had to agree. He was pretty sure he never gave his Transformers an oil change. And good luck to the Power Ranger or GI Joe who needed one.
Sam turned back to Sarah and put his hand over hers. "It's going to be alright," he promised softly. "We're just getting a little extra time with it." God knows they never got to say goodbye to the things and people they loved before.
Sarah put her other hand over Sam's. "I hope you're right and this isn't some trick."
Sam pulled her into a hug.
-----------
"What happens if you actually catch something worth keeping?" Bucky asked. He looked more interested in Sam's answer than the fishing pole he was supposed to be watching. For as often as Sam found Bucky sunning in one spot or mindlessly watching TV for hours, he seemed to not enjoy the mundanity of fishing very much. He kept getting distracted by the miles and miles of ocean around them or the fish he could see with his own eyes or the birds careening overhead.
"Take it home. Cook it," Sam said reasonably. He had never actually caught anything very interesting while deep-sea fishing, but he held out hope.
Bucky's eyes narrowed a little. "Where are you going to keep it?"
"You know fish go in the cooler."
Bucky looked over to the medium sized cooler and looked no more impressed. "That's all good for the shore and pier, but what happens if you reel in something big?"
"Since when do you have confidence in my fishing abilities?"
"I don't. I have confidence in your contrariness."
Sam snorted. "Relax and have a coke."
Bucky pulled another can from the drink cooler but kept pacing along the boat's edge. Maybe caffeine wasn't the best suggestion.
"What are you doing?" Sam asked in fond exasperation.
Bucky glanced over at him and pushed a hand through his hair and looked out to the water again then back at Sam. "I have to tell you something," he said.
"Then spit it out, man. I can't take you back to the house all fidgety."
"Right. Well, you know how you've been--" Right at that moment, Bucky's disregarded fishing pole clattered against the PVC pipe holder it was sitting in and then worked its way free with a dramatic lurch. Sam and Bucky both dove for it at the same time. They collided with a jarring of shoulders and one good bounce of skulls.
The fishing pole disappeared into the water at an alarming speed. Sam stared at it, mostly because he could feel Bucky staring at him in turn.
"That was a good pole," he said to the ocean.
Bucky snorted and leaned against Sam's side, pressing his face to Sam's shoulder. "That's not true. You wouldn't have given it to me if it was any good."
"Okay, you break almost every one I hand you. You've got to learn the difference between a fish and a clump of seaweed that's not moving."
Bucky laughed until Sam did too, throwing his arm around Bucky's shoulders. He could stay like this for forever. The sun, the breeze, laughing with Bucky next to him, the boat beneath them.
"Is it you?" Sam asked.
"Mmm?" Bucky hummed, hiding his face for a second longer before raising his head to look up at Sam.
"The boat, the guy who bought it. You bought it."
"What makes you think that?"
Sam put his hand against Bucky's cheek, brushing his thumb over the corner of Bucky's eye. "The transactions come from New York. I know you're spending money on something. It's definitely not yourself. Besides, it really seems like this guy wants us to have the boat."
"Some of it is a new house," Bucky admitted.
"Why?" Sam asked.
"Because I imagine Sarah wants her guest room back," Bucky said.
"No, why did you buy the boat?"
Bucky looked away from Sam and shrugged. The sun dappled across his cheeks, lit his eyes up. "Because it deserved to stay here. Because you love it. Because the only other way I'd be able to give you something like that is if you married me and that would take a lot longer."
Sam rolled his eyes and pushed his fingers through the hair on the back of Bucky's head. "That's sweet, in a fucked up way." Keeping Bucky held close, he watched the water ripple in the wind as he thought. "Not an acceptable way to solve a problem though."
Bucky let out a breath from his nose. "Trust me, I've gone over this lecture in a billion different ways. I already know everything you're going to say in every voice you're going to say it in."
"Then right now I'll just say, that's also not an acceptable proposal."
Bucky let out another long breath that turned into a laugh that he couldn't contain. "Okay, okay, that wasn't a proposal," he agreed but pulled Sam into a kiss like he'd said yes anyway.
The boat swayed beneath them, sturdy and sure.

Tumblr media
This has been a slow year for me due to health issues (my own and my family's health not doing so great was all the rage this year), but I still wanted to celebrate that I created fanworks. I love the escapism creating and engaging in fanworks gives me.
I'm still firmly in the Marvel fandom. I was hoping to dip my toe in the Stranger Things and Percy Jackson fandoms, but alas, life had other plans. Fingers crossed I can expand into other fandoms in 2024.
So, in order of publication, my works for 2023:
“It is my duty to keep an eye on you.” (Rated M, ≤500 Moodboard & Short Fic, Bucky Barnes/Natasha Romanoff)
Natasha stepped in closer, running her finger along the edge of James’ tie, “I wouldn’t want you to not fulfill your duties.”
If you're gonna have car trouble on a road trip… (Rated T, 1.3k, Bucky Barnes/Steve Rogers/Tony Stark)
Bucky didn’t set out to upend his life in Indiana or his relationship with his boyfriend. Or thought he would contemplate becoming part of a polyamorous relationship with a married couple in a different state. Life can be funny sometimes.
Vibe Check (Rated T, 1.1K, Steve Rogers/Tony Stark)
Harley and Peter worked too hard to get their dads together for Tony to forget to give Steve flowers.
A Price to Pay (Rated T, ≤1000 Moodboard & Short One-Shot, Loki/Tony Stark)
Stealing from a powerful wizard comes with consequences.
More after the cut...
The Awkward and the OnlyFans (Rated M, 3.6k, Steve Rogers/Sam Wilson, for the @silver-fox-steve-bang Valentine Exchange, created for @espressosaur)
A minor disaster with a book display has Steve meeting a handsome man who is clearly flirting with him. But Steve has a feeling he has seen this man before. And there may have been some booty shorts involved.
Stucky Bingo February 2023 Round Robin (Rated G, 1.7k, Bucky Barnes/Steve Rogers, for the @stuckybingo Round Robin)
When Russian figure skater Bucky Barnes defects, he can only skate for the Team USA if he skates with a partner. What he and Steve Rogers find together on the ice is golden.
Stucky Bingo March 2023 Round Robin (Rated T, 2k, Bucky Barnes/Steve Rogers, for the @stuckybingo Round Robin)
It wasn’t that he hadn’t noticed Bucky being struck. He’d thrown out his shield to block the worst of the damage from the exploding debris, but he’d noticed Bucky clutching his side throughout the fight. Steve knew. But in the middle of it there had been no opportunity for pause, no moment where he could check that Bucky was okay. He kept moving, and that was what mattered.
Project: Pathfinder (Rated M, Moodboard, Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, created for @geekymoviemom)
When Captain America goes missing after a routine Avengers’ mission, leaving Tony Stark and the rest of the world stunned, Peter Parker decides to take it upon himself to try and fill the hole left behind by his absence. But while Peter believes that he’s finally gotten a decent handle on his new powers, he quickly discovers that there’s a lot more to being an unofficial Avenger than the ability to climb walls. Meanwhile, Steve is once again forced to face the demons of his past, all while searching for a way to get back home.
Coming Home (And Finding You) (Rated T, 1.4k, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson, for @clintcoulson appreciation week)
Phil has a rough mission. When he gets home, Clint has all of Phil’s favorites ready.
Not a Stranger in the Wood (Rated G, Digital Art, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson, for @clintcoulson appreciation week)
Clint Bartonguard was shocked to see his former party leader. Phillip had been run through the heart attempting to save Clint from Loki the Trickster's spell.
Family Dinners (Rated G, ≤1000 Moodboard & Short One-Shot, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson, for @clintcoulson appreciation week)
It isn’t many nights they are able to get together like this, but each one Clint carries in his memory like a treasure trove. An uninterrupted dinner with the team.
The Universe is Ridiculous (Rated T, 1.3k, Clint Barton/Phil Coulson, for @clintcoulson appreciation week)
Phil should know better and be careful about what he asks for. Or at least be very specific as to what he asks for. The Universe has a wicked sense of humor and will likely do exactly as wished.
First Gift Given (Rated E, 11k, Steve Rogers/Tony Stark)
Yes, Tony is hiding in a dive bar, but it is for good reasons. Pepper should thank him for not sticking around the Stark Industries board members' schmooze-a-thon. He was bound to piss off someone sooner than later and then she would have to go and make it all better. See, he’s making her life easy by not being there. But Tony wishes he would have picked a better hiding spot. One where a gaggle of college co-eds wasn’t screaming Bon Jovi’s greatest hits at the top of their lungs. It would be pure hell if it weren’t for the gorgeous, blue-eyed possible jail bait flashing Tony sweet, shy smiles across the room. Flirting with college boys is a big no-no, but what’s the worst that could happen? It’s not like Tony’s going to take him home or anything.
Stucky Bingo May 2023 Round Robin (Rated T, 1.7k, Bucky Barnes/Steve Rogers, for the @stuckybingo Round Robin)
If Steve were honest with himself, he’d been at least as curious as Bucky to discover what had happened to Becca. She’d been the closest thing he’d had to a sister growing up, and he remembered how kind-hearted she was, even if she did get into nearly as much mischief as he and Bucky did along the way.
Steve Rogers and Tony Stark star in Ghosted (Rated T, Digital Art, Steve Rogers/Tony Stark)
The latest movie from Marvel TV+, don’t miss Steve Rogers and Tony Stark in the action packed rom-com Ghosted.
Trying not to lose my sensibility (Rated E, 6.5k, Steve Rogers/TonyStark, for @cap-ironman Stony Loves Steve event)
In the weeks leading up to his heat, Steve rethinks about his relationship with Brock. And his fading friendship with Tony.
The Future is filled with Surprises (Rated M, 1.3k & Moodboard, Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, for the @stevetonygames)
A chat on his favorite app has Steve meeting the last person he expected for a hookup.
The Only Time (Rated G, Moodboard & Drabble, Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, for the @stevetonygames)
The invitation for another Iron Man Memorial statue arrives in his inbox at 6 AM. Steve has been to more ceremonies honoring his friend in five years since his return than he cares to count, but he attends them all. And at each one, Steve takes a moment to think about the man.
Will Not Be Caught (Yet) (Rated M, Moodboard & Drabble, Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, for the @stevetonygames)
Tony knows he will be caught, but that’s the point. He will not make it easy for Steve.
Getting Tony out of the workshop (A Guide) (Rated G, Infographic, Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, for the @stevetonygames)
Infographic for Stony writers on how Steve can lure Tony from an inventing binge using food.
A Little Advice (Rated G, Image Edit, Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, for the @stevetonygames)
I feel like this is a conversation they had a lot when the team would make them sit up front on their own.
Must Be Tuesday (Rated T, ≤500, Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, for the @stevetonygames)
Who needs to treat their husband to a fantastic steak dinner that could satisfy even a super soldier's appetite when Dr. Doom threatens the end of the world? Again.
Late Meeting (Rated M, Moodboard & Drabble, Steve Rogers/Tony Stark, for the @stevetonygames)
Sex in Tony’s office always excites him, and marks are usually left behind. Steve doesn’t mind.
