i figured out what the formula to a great disney princess live action remakes; the chemistry.  because i believe ella and kit are in love when i watched cinderella. i believe ariel and eric are in love when i watched the little mermaid. and the end of their movies, im so happy to know they’re together after all those hardships they went through. the actors’ chemistry are off the chart for those two movies so in the next remakes, they better find those who can act in love and actually believeable at it

okay let’s try this: here’s some disney song sorted into somewhat formal categories and ranked.

oh sweet that seems to have worked!

disclaimer i guess: i hate disney as a corporation for a lot of reasons, but i love movies and music and animation and talking about music and movies and animation. so here we are

“i want” songs: a term taken from broadway by ashman and menken to describe the song towards the beginning of the movie where the protagonist sings about their goals at the outset of the story. this is the only one with a top ten instead of a top five, and even a couple honorable mentions

10. a dream is a wish your heart makes— cinderella. it’s memorable and sweet!

9. one jump ahead— aladdin. it’s catchy and energetic and fun, and a better world builder than the actual opener (what with that one revised racist line)

8. for the first time in forever— frozen. i think it does really well to showcase anna and elsa’s conflicting feelings about opening the castle, how their wants and needs are at odds with themselves and each other, and i love how the musical motifs from “let it go” are introduced here.

7. reflection— mulan. it’s so beautiful and evocative, you can really feel mulan’s inner conflict

6. i just can’t wait to be king— the lion king. fun catchy and with a bitter ironic twist

5. repunzels daily routine— tangled it’s sweet it’s fun it’s catchy, i like repunzel

4. how far i’ll go— moana. i love how the melody reprises in “i am moana” it’s just so good

3. almost there— princess and the frog. it’s so fun and energetic, and it’s more ambitious than wistful which is a welcome change

2. belle & belle reprise— beauty and the beast. this serves sort of a double purpose as a world builder and an “i want” song and really elegantly contextualizes how what belle wants is at odds with the world she lives in. would be number one except it feels like cheating to give an ensemble number and a two parter that spot.

honorable mentions: when you wish upon a star— pinocchio. not a classical “i want” song because pinocchio isn’t singing it, but disney uses it as their brand leitmotif so. there’s that. go the distance— hercules. it’s good. like other girls— mulan TWO?? the only song from a sequel i remember even a little bit, it’s such a bop.

1. part of your world— the little mermaid. THE “i want” song. i also have a special place in my heart for this one because it was the first song i ever learned when i took voice lessons as a kid (which is. i won’t get into it.) but anyway, ariel’s curiosity and earnestness is touching, it’s no wonder this song kicked off the disney renaissance.

villain songs: people love villain songs and they love to talk about how much they love villain songs. here are some of them.

5. hellfire— hunchback of notre dam. grandiose and scary, this is a killer song about religious intolerance and hypocrisy.

4. gaston/mob song— beauty and the beast. would be ranked higher except i can’t rightly separate these two. “gaston” particularly serves a duel purpose as a “fun-and-games” song FOR the villain and the villagers, and also sets up gaston’s power of popularity and just how he can sweep the whole village into a mob at the snap of his fingers. also they’re both in a major key (in the movie. in the musical it says mob song is in a minor. does this happen a lot with broadway adaptations?)

3. mother knows best— tangled. so insidious and manipulative i love it.

2. be prepared— the lion king. this is not a hot take this is like everyone’s favorite disney song. honestly the hottest take is not giving it the number one spot.

honorable mention: cruella de ville— 101 dalmatians. it’s got a recognizable melody and it’s so funny that roger hates his wife’s coworker so much he wrote a whole song about it. friends on the other side— princess and the frog. it’s a bop!

1. poor unfortunate souls— i love how the lyrics are ursula talking about how “helpful” she is while the music itself sounds so sinister. honestly this ranks really close to “be prepared” in my head but i think it’s just slightly under rated while be prepared is just slightly over rated.

“fun and games” songs— this is a term im borrowing from film school, but probably musical theatre has its own name for it. anyway these are big, danceable ensemble numbers.

5. under the sea— the little mermaid. great example of this song but over rated if you ask me.

4. friend like me and prince ali— aladdin. i think they go together alright because friend like me is the genie introducing himself and his powers to aladdin, and prince ali shows him using his powers. robin williams is great!

3. zero to hero— hercules. so fun and catchy i love the muses.

2. hakuna matata— the lion king. it means no worries for the rest of your days!

honorable mentions: bare necessities— the jungle book. a cute proto hakuna matata. human again— beauty and the beast extended edition. it’s not even in the original movie but it’s so good! love a waltz!

1. be our guest— beauty and the beast. maybe a predictable number one choice but it’s just so funny and charming with this infectious energy, and such a creative animation sequence, (or dance & costume sequence in stage adaptations) i love lumiere’s little boo hoo moment.

world builders— this is a term im taking i from sci fi fantasy media criticism i guess. kind of a weird vague category that can include anything from big ensemble numbers to un named narrators. actually, there aren’t that many examples of this, so i only have a top four.

4. meet the madrigals— encanto. i keep forgetting to include this movie because it’s so new, but this is a bop and a good introduction to the characters.

3. the gospel truth— hercules. i think it’s so interesting to do a gospel music homage in a movie about greek gods and i’ll be damned if the muses aren’t wonderful to listen to. what fun exposition!

2. honor to us all— mulan. closer to the style of “belle” the “prologue”, this tells us the world mulan lives in and we really get a sense of the pressure she’s under.

honorable mentions i guess: prologue— beauty and the beast. i don’t like that it’s just talking over music, but it introduces some beautiful musical motifs that are used later. “belle” with the villagers is also kind of a world opener but it’s so heavily contextualized with belle reprise, belle’s i want song, that i won’t put it here. arabian nights— aladdin. EXACT same situation with one jump ahead and it’s reprise doubling as a world builder and an i want song, except instead of my issue being talking over music, my issue is the orientalism.

1. the circle of life— the lion king. rip to the zebras and gazelles but this is one hell of an opening number.

love songs— self explanatory!

5. once upon a dream— sleeping beauty. i just think it’s pretty and i love how it takes the melody from the ballet.

4. beauty and the beast (a tale as old as time)— beauty and the beast. i’ve already doubled up belle and belle reprise, and gaston and mob song, but for this one i’m actually going to take up two spots in my top five with beauty and the beast songs! it’s just a beautiful song with a beautiful animation sequence. it’s lovely!

3. something there— beauty and the beast. hot take to put two beauty and the beast songs in my top five, an even hotter take to put this non oscar winning song above beauty and the beast, but i love this one. i like that belle and the beast actually sing, but the castle staff still have a few lines to gossip about them lol. their trepidation about falling in love makes their relationship feel so well built. it’s just very sweet.

2. a whole new world— aladdin. i actually don’t have a lot to say about this one, i just think it’s really good.

honorable mention: at last i see the light— repunzel. pretty song and a good storytelling “want vs need” moment where repunzel accomplishes her goal of seeing the lights and realizes it evens more to see then with eugene, and eugene realizes his goal of selling the crown for riches or whatever isn’t as important to him as being with repunzel. that considered, it should be higher, but the music just doesn’t stick with me like some of these others, idk. love is an open door— frozen. a cute little pastiche of fairy tale “love at first sight”, way better than the terrible troll song about kristoff, the actual love interest.

1. won’t say i’m in love— hercules. susan egan. the muses. the concept of this jaded, love spurned princess fighting her feelings until that last soft, reluctant “at least out loud i won’t say i’m in love”. this song gives a lot of much needed depth to the hercules-meg-hades conflict (which i say because herc and hades are more distant from each other and more closely connected to meg) i digress, good song.

In the past, I've written plenty of AU stories and a few have featured cameo OCs. These OC were temporary characters but I'd like to introduce more standard characters to do cameos. So to my followers, I'd like to give you a chance to submit your own characters based on a list of obscure or lesser-known stories or characters that we haven't considered.

The Rules:

The list is first come first serve but chose wisely. Don't rush because you might not be happy with the results.

Look, all of these princesses have at least some interest in women. I'm gonna try to write a reason 'why' do I think that

Snow White; Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs

Bisexual. I mean she found her Prince Florian and they say that they lived happily ever after but I mean look at Florian...He's 34 and not very... handsome (sorry not sorry) so I think that she'll eventually want to explore more and more. She's also a very kind and loving soul who will probably fall in love with one or the other gender.

Cinderella; Cinderella

Bisexual but prefers men. So Ella grew up mostly with her two step-sisters and step-mother and they were abusing her. So I guess she has some kind of a need to rebel against their rules? and I guess they can be pretty homophobic so that's why Ella has the need to try out something with a woman, otherwise she looking mostly for men.

Aurora; Sleeping Beauty

Lesbian. Okay hear me out. I think that Aurora is a lesbian because she grew up with three women in middle of nowhere so I don't really think she could think of a man... She was raised by women and she lived with them most of her life so she seeks women. She cannot imagine a household without a woman and she definitely cannot imagine herself without a woman.

Ariel; The Little Mermaid

Pansexual. Ariel is interested in humans and your gender doesn't matter to her. She wants to explore and she's very curious so I think she will spend her time studying women and men separately. For sure she wouldn't care who her partner will be if female, male, non-binary... she doesn't care, she just wants to be loved.

Belle; Beauty And The Beast

Bisexual prefers women. Gaston is always flirting with her or showing off his muscles in front of her and he's just annoying her, so I think that's why Belle prefers women, because she's so tired of Gaston's (men) attention. She wants to be free and share her opinions on different books with someone intelligent and not dumb as Gaston. So that's why she's looking for women most of the time.

Jasmine; Aladdin

Bisexual. I really don't want to put 'bisexual' to everyone but.... Well Jasmine is pretty sassy and free-spirited. She need a bit of adventure in her life so she will see for someone who can protect her (man) and someone who can comfort her, understand her problems and someone to talk to all day long (woman). So I guess it only depends on who will stole her heart first.

Pocahontas; Pocahontas

Lesbian. She never seemed interested in Kocoum BUT she was very interested in her female friend, Nakoma. She's pretty curious, brave and free-spirited... she has a loving and caring soul which needs the same 'kind of soul' back. She need someone kind and gentle who is matching her energy... and she just really love boobs.

Mulan; Mulan

Lesbian. Mulan is more masculine then feminine. In the first movie she was really uncomfortable with all that make-up and the dress and was more comfortable in armor or shorts. So she seeks for someone who is almost the exact opposite of her; someone feminine.

Tiana; The Princess and the Frog

Bisexual. Tiana is confident and a hard-worker so she needs someone active. She has really close relationship with Charlotte and at the start of the movie, Tiana is disgusted by the thought of marriage and dating a man. But that was when she was a little kid, after she grew up she started to find men attractive but she still was interested in women, that's why she's bisexual.

Rapunzel; Tangled

Pansexual. Rapunzel spend 18 years locked up in a tower so after she get out she was REALLY curious about everything and everyone. She lived only with her 'mother' so she's interested in women but Eugene saved her so she began to be interested in men. After all she just wants to be loved and she wants to love, doesn't matter who, it will be the one who she will fall in love with.

Merida; Brave

Lesbian. I don't think I have to explain this one, Merida doesn't like men in the movies, she acc annoyed and disgusted by them. So it's no secret that she loves women.

Elsa; Frozen

Lesbian. Again I don't think I have to really explain this one either. It was confirmed that Elsa will have a female interest in Frozen 4. She is also independent and strong woman and I feel like she's getting more masculine which she shows in Frozen 2.

Anna; Frozen

Pansexual but prefers men. Does that make sense? I mean Anna is really kind and loving person. She will help anybody in need and comfort them in bad moments. But she always dreamed that she will marry her 'prince charming' and live happily ever after so that's why she seeks men, but if she wouldn't mind if she fell in love with a woman.

Kida; Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Lesbian. I don't know why but I just feel that she is a lesbian. She's independent and strong, she doesn't need a man. She also dominant and I kinda feel that she's also a bit masculine... that's why she want a woman. She also want woman because she admired her mother as a child so it brings her some kind of comfort.

Esmeralda; The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Bisexual. I mean she's pretty sassy and again independent, a bit masculine which she shows when she's with a woman, but there are many racist people around so she needs to be careful, that's why she also like men, because they can protect her and make her feel safe.

dnp movie analysis p2: genres, studios, franchises

thanks everyone for enabling me <3 i'm back with some more analysis by genre, franchise, and studio!

genre ratings

first, genre ratings (genre is kinda arbitrary here, tbh; there's a lot of overlap!)

here we have the first table (please tumblr don't mess with the quality) (i can post the excel sheets if needed; r tables were being a pita)

here we have the number, mean (= median for all of this analysis), minimum, and maximum ratings by genre. within each statistic, i've highlighted the minimum (light) and maximum (dark) for dan (blue) and phil for genres with >1 movie (just realized i fucked up western, ignore that lmao)

phil has watched the most horror (64) and dan mostly sci-fi (53). interestingly, but presumably because of their love for these genres, each of their minimum scores went to these genres. if you watch a lot of one type of movie, you're gonna find the duds.

both of them liked christmas movies (tbh this was like, home alone, so), with their highest minimum and mean ratings being for that category (nostalgia, i assume because like, same). lowest mean scores were for superhero movies (both) and mystery (phil). for both of them, marvel was pretty all over the place (we'll get into that in a sec), so that's not super surprising.

their highest minimum scores were both given to war movies, which is a little surprising but this include movies like 1917 and dunkirk which are ~critically acclaimed~, so makes some sense. their minimum max scores went to westerns and mysteries for dan, and musicals, mysteries, and biopics for phil.

here are the histograms/bar charts for genres. these aren't the prettiest tbh, and i excluded some that had only one or two movies / weren't very interesting. without delving deep into the data, you can see how their preferences play out especially in horror and sci-fi, where phil has more highly-rated horror movies (partly because he's rated more) and dan has a lot of highly-rated sci-fi (but also low ratings). you also see how superhero movies are pretty middling -- there's almost a normal distribution! (not really, but sort of!). romance too. there's in general a lot of left skew here -- they like to rate movies highly.

final genre analysis is number of movies in one genre rated by one and not the other. i'm so sorry this table is so long.

i highlighted here the top three genres one has watched without the other. again we see phil likes his horror (and as i said in my last post, a fair amount of these movies were watched when dan was on tour, and this doesn't even include the guillermo del toro's cabinet of curiosities episodes he rated), but also thrillers (similar!) and comedies (which i get; i love to put a comedy on in the background). unsuprisingly, dan's watched a lot of sci-fi without phil, but also horror and comedy. in general, though, his genres are more distributed.

next, studios/franchises!

again, i've highlighted the maximum and minimum in each column, only for franchises. both of them really like ghibli, and dan likes disney more than phil (though i think this is missing big hero 6 now that i'm looking at it again, because dan rated that lower). that's theatre kid behavior: the 4.5 was beauty and the beast, all pixar and aladdin and so on were highly rated.

i fucked up the matrix somehow so just ignore that -- they both gave matrix sequels low scores

turning to franchises, phil is a harry potter hater (valid at this point). but loves lord of the rings. so does dan, though his dan's ratings actually skew pretty high for franchises in general (see: his maximum scores for each franchise are 4.5 or 5); he can pretend to be alternative or whatever but he's still a millennial at heart. their minimums minimums are both for star wars (sequels!) and marvel, which, valid. phil's highest minimum is bond (there were only a couple rated) and dan's is the hunger games, but unlike phil he only rated thg and catching fire, not either mockingjay.

and bar charts!

i only picked the most interesting ones here as well. marvel follows a similar distribution to the superhero movies, which, since they each only rated a couple dc movies (and i didn't include nolan's batmans), makes sense. again they both rate lotr highly, but the hobbit was low. the studio ones are less interesting imo because they skew so far left, but again: dan is such a disney kid.

that's all i have! i love this because dan, for all his faux cynicism, just rates movies so highly + it's so often the movies that don't fit his curated doomer persona but moreso the pooh one. and also phil expressing opinions! phil just watching a lot of horror!! i love it.

I have him as Icelandic purely because of LeafSheep's "Begin at the Beginning," the King Said!! Nordic Heartslabyul has my heart. and ofc since Heartslabyul is based on Alice in Wonderland, he's half-British in my headcanons

Ace Trappola: British

Alice in Wonderland :)

I don't have much to say about Ace, I kinda don't think about him all that much

Deuce Spade: Irish

In coming up with nationality headcanons, I wanted to explore more areas in the British Isles for the Heartslabyul students and eventually decided on Deuce being Irish! I had more reasonings but its 5 am and I cannot think for the love of me.

Cater Diamond: American with English/German heritage

I see myself in Cater. He's one of my highest kins, so he's 100% from West Coast USA. It also makes a lot of sense he'd be American looking at how similar some nations in the Twisted Wonderland universe are to nations in our own world! Pyroxene is really similar to the United States from what I've researched, and Cater's valley accent in the English version of the game really hits the mark :)

As for his heritage, he's English because of Alice in Wonderland and German because I feel it fits him very well

Trey Clover: British

I don't think about Trey often enough sorry :(((

Savanaclaw

Leona Kingscholar: Kenyan

The Lion King takes place in the Kenya area, and so I put him there!

Jack Howl: American with Kenyan/French heritage

Another Pyroxien!

Kenyan because Savanaclaw was based on the Lion King and that's set in Kenya

French because I have a sneaking suspicion Jack is based on the wolves from Beauty and the Beast

Ruggie: South African

Ruggie was hard to find a headcanon for, but I eventually just took someone else's headcanon that said he is South African

Azul Ashengrotto: Italian/French/Danish

All come from where the Little Mermaid is set in both the movie form and the Hans Christian Andersen form. The movie itself was set in the Mediterranean Sea, and I headcanon Azul's family to be from around the Nice, France area of the Mediterranean

Danish comes into play from the original source material for The Little Mermaid and the fact that the Coral Sea in Twst gets cold. Also to note, the Coral Sea on the map of Twisted Wonderland is close to the coast of the Queendom of Roses, which is pretty far north!

Jade and Floyd Leech: Danish

Putting these two together because twins

Pretty much the same reasonings as Azul, the book's settings and the Coral Sea :)

Scarabia

Kalim Al-Asim: Saudi Arabian

I'm going to be so honest, I don't think about Scarabia like... at all. So for Kalim, I'm going straight out of where Aladdin is supposed to be set

That also came as a problem, because the movie has a habit of mashing Middle Eastern cultures together. Though I did find that the movie takes place in the Arabian Desert which narrows where Aladdin was filmed to a myriad of countries, one of which is Saudi Arabia

I decided to go with Saudi Arabia since a majority of the desert does reside within that country.

Jamil Viper: Saudi Arabian/South Asian

Same thing as for my headcanons with Kalim, and I got the South Asian headcanon from a mutual on TikTok

Disney 100 ✨🏰🤍

Wishing you all a happy new year and to Disney, a belated 100th anniversary! 🎉

To celebrate Disney’s century milestone, I created an illustration based on 100 of Disney’s most known and loved characters from their respective movies/ series. I’ve included all the ones I’ve known and feel are generally popular but I’m sorry if your personal favourites aren’t here.

This has been in the works for almost four months now but due to many delays I couldn’t finish it on time. So here it finally is!

Out of all these range characters, the hardest to draw was the Cars. I’m not used to drawing cars so I’m not generally good at them (yet). Some of these may look simple and easy to draw but trust me, they’re not 😂.

With drawing the characters and the background, I like to be accurate with the respective style it’s drawn/ animated in and the colours too. But also I wanted to also simplify the 3D ones and add a little depth using shadow to the 2D ones. For example some of these films would have a desaturated grainy effect to it and I wanted to keep that. But finally after months of working on it, it’s completed and I’m happy with it! ✨.

Korrasami:

Beauty and the beast- brave and beautiful daughter of an inventor? And Korra would be a good beast. She gives off furry vibes and has anger issues.

Hercules- ive seen this one a couple times. It fits so well!

Makorra:

The swan princess -Mako has enough social ineptitude to offend a woman in five syllables or less. Korra will wreak havoc as a swan tho. Have you ever been pecked by a swan? They have serrated beaks. Serrated beaks!

Rapunzel- magical girl isolated from the world and insecure boy with ties to crime? Excellent. Make her hair turn silvery blue like healing water.

Masami:

Hunchback of Notre Dame- but Asami is Phoebus and Mako is Esmeralda because fuck gender norms. I imagine in this AU Hiroshi is the Frollo and is hunting down benders or smth. Bolin can be the goat.

Aladdin- hot independent princess and street rat boy. Need I say more? Let Korra be the genie.

Irohsami:

Mulan- good luck disguising yourself as a twink, Asami. Iroh bouta go through a crisis of sexuality.

Treasure Planet- briliant yet inexperienced dr Asami Sato is on an expedition to discover the lost Treasure of captain Flint onboard a ship commanded by the extremely capable captain Iroh. [ catgirl Iroh catgirl Iroh]

Weilin:

Anastasia- Due to an uprising the Beifongs, who are either royalty or nobles in this AU, i haven't yet decided have to flee their home. But an eight year old Wei doesn't make it and after sustaining a head injury, forgets who he is. Mako and Bolin are conmen (which is sorta in line with canon, they did scams as kids) and are trying to find someone to pose as the lost prince in order to collect the reward money the royal family offers for his return. (Though i might make Varrick take the tole of Vlad) They find Wei and he seems perfect for the job. (Haven't yet decided who is gonna be Rasputin. Aiwei maybe?)

Atlantis- Bolin and a group of other adventurers travel to the lost city of Zaofu, where the Beifong family live and Wei becomes very interested in the outsider. [Hnnn i need to draw the 'you do swim, do you not?' Scene with them]

Kainora:

Peter pan - Jinora and her siblings travel to Neverland with Kai and have child friendly adventures complete with puppy love. Good for them.

Bopal( im sorry bopal shippers, but i like despise this ship so not much for them. I did my best tho):

Wild Swans (from Mikhail Baryshnikow's 'Stories from my childhood') - As a result of an evil witch's spell, Opal's brothers ( and heck, toss Kuvira in there too) are turned into swans and their parents forget the existence of their children. Opal takes on the arduous task of shirts out of stinging nettles for them, while maintaining a vow of silence, the only way to break the spell. While her siblings are away, Opal is found by prince Bolin. Due to the fact that she needs to remain silent to break the spell, she is unable to explain the situation, so Bolin takes her back to his castle and they fall in love. But soon people start to suspect Opal of witchcraft. (The prince is super goofy in that movie and also preforms an opera ballad for the princess and i can see bolin standing under Opal's window singing : WHERE IS YOUR HEART?)

The Little Mermaid (2023)

I just saw the new Little Mermaid movie. It was okay. Not horrible, not great. But decent. I'll start with the negative and work my way to the positive.

The weakest trait of the movie is the pacing. It's over a half an hour longer than the original version and they add new songs and it drags at point and yet they rush some very important scenes and even chop out a lot. They changed Ariel giving up her voice. She still does it but it's no longer Ursula's payment and- probably to avoid accusations of sexism even though it's a villain singing it and you're supposed to see it as wrong- they removed a big chunk of "Poor Unfortunate Souls." This bothered me. Disney does know it's okay for villains to say not nice and untrue things right? If characters like Gaston in Beauty and the Beast or Ursula in The Little Mermaid say something sexist we know it's wrong. They're... villains... Why would Ursula help Ariel without definite payment? If the voice isn't payment and by some chance the prince did kiss Ariel before the sunset on the third day, Ursula gains nothing. Ursula wanting payment in the form of Ariel's voice made sense because it suggests to Ariel that Ursula thinks she can win Eric's kiss before the end of the third day and it gets rid of the suspicion of "Why would she help me for nothing?" Grown adults were already confused about this in regard to the animated one and forgot that the voice was a payment and Ariel would NOT get it back after the kiss. It was (supposedly) gone forever. This will just add to the confusion. Also they added to the spell where Ariel now can't remember she needs Eric to kiss her. Why? What's the point with that?

Some CG is pretty awful looking while others look great. You'll know the bad computer generated imagery when you see it. The new songs aren't that good. The lyrics to Ariel's new "while mute" song is kind of awful. But the worst song is Scuttle's new song. It's up there with giving Iago a song in Aladdin 2: Return of Jafar. That's how bad it is. Prince Eric's song is okay but probably should have been worked on a little more. It kind of (unintentionally) reminded me of an Old Spice advertisement the way he suddenly was on a ship. It reminded me of "Ladies, look at your man. Now back at me." that commercial. It feels like there were edits that should not have been made such as not revealing why there's a statue of Eric on the ship. That's kind of important, isn't it? One thing I don't understand about these Disney remakes is why they don't just adapt the Broadway musical version into a live action movie? As with Beauty and the Beast there are some gorgeous songs that are not in the animated version. And I would love to see those in live action. Ursula being King Triton's sister is from an early longer version of "Mysterious Fathoms below" from the animated movie, verses that weren't used in the movie. It was also later used for The Little Mermaid Broadway musical. So like with Beauty and the Beast they borrowed aspects of the Broadway musical version but not the new song numbers. They'd rather try to get a "best original song" nomination by adding a a new song (or a few) and they never feel like much effort is put into them. It's not just Disney who does this. This was also done with the Les Miserables musical movie as well as many others. But honestly I think Disney should have made movies out the Broadway stage versions. That being said I DO think Lin-Manuel Miranda is overrated. I'm sorry. I just do. I'm not a fan of the new songs added to The Little Mermaid. Also King Triton feels like he's been medicated. He's so mellow that it's actually kind of creepy when he destroys Ariel's collection. I guess someone thought his temper and yelling came off as abusive but somehow him being calm and dispassionate makes it worse. Some people might appreciate Under the Sea being longer, like it is in The Broadway Musical version but frankly that was always my least favorite Little Mermaid song number so for me it dragged on even though I liked Halle Bailey's Ariel joining in the singing. They also changed Ariel signing a contract to giving a scale from her tail. I guess this was because Disney is intent on quieting old questions like "If she can write how come she didn't tell Eric who she is in writing?" You could just say they write in different languages, it takes more than three days to learn how to write in a new language if the alphabet is written differently. Though I actually do like the contract being "In blood." Lots of it felt rushed. I don't remember seeing Ursula's previous victims being freed from her enchantments like we saw in the animated movie and there's more emoting in the animated movie.

Now for the good... Halle Bailley has an incredible voice. Her singing is gorgeous. She's a perfect Ariel, especially in the vocals. I also didn't mind the change to Kiss the Girl. They changed "There's only one way to ask her." to "Use your words, boy, and ask her." And that's a fine change. I don't mind it at all. It makes sense. They do give Eric more of a personality but I wish it was more like in the Broadway musical where he taught Ariel to dance to express herself and eventually decided he loved her more than the mysterious voice that rescued him. And Eric's song is the only new song I find tolerable. In general it's an okay movie featuring a great singer. Not the worst Disney remake but not something I'd ever consider a favorite. Note: I used to have a non-white Little Mermaid doll. I was very proud of her because I customized her, myself. I had a broken eight inch Non-Disney Little Mermaid doll. And an eight inch non-Disney Pocahontas from the same manufacturer. I made her a small bikini top from a modified Princess Jasmine top. And I put the Pocahontas from torso up on the Little Mermaid tail. It looked so good that other kids mistook it as having been made that way. I was very proud of her. I think someone threw her out on me after my most recent move. It's a shame. I had her for nearly thirty years. People never noticed she was a customized doll and yet, ironically, some people mistook my prince doll from Beauty and the Beast (Actual Disney product) as being a "Barbie head on a Ken body." That's... there's no words for that one...

rapunzel: i’m way too inspired by @scrawlers ‘s au right now bc All I Can Think About is tails being raised by an abusive eggman and sonic helping him escape.

beauty and the beast: tails, a curious young scientist researching a strange false chaos energy, meets dark sonic, trapped in this form until positive energy can set him free.

little mermaid: classic sonic losing his voice in order to save tails, who will never know the truth about what happened — and/or ….. a magical little kitsune saves a strange blue hedgehog from drowning, then wants to follow him back to the material world. but by doing so he loses most of his nine tails and his memory

aladdin: street rat tails has never had friends before but suddenly meets the triplet prince sonic

cinderella: celebrity hero sonic is holding auditions for a sidekick best friend partner. bullied orphan tails tries to audition with a shoe that resists friction. he manages to arrive with the help of a fairy god amy, who helps him fly. sonic loves the shoes — he’s ready to hire this lil inventor. but at midnight tails runs away. bullies smash one shoe, but tails stands up to them and shows sonic the other shoe just in time. i think i’ll call this one ‘when the other shoe drops’

sleeping beauty: head injury / magic / poison leads to one of them not being able to wake up for a long time. 2 days later, a hug does the trick. plotless but i expect by this point i’ll have lost steam and need a very short fluff fic to get me through.

princess and the frog: this one’s mainly meant to be funny. tails’s invention turns sonic into a frog (or so he thinks?). sonics actually just on a non material plane and spends all day just watching him and his friends. in the end, the frog tails has been looking after all day is Froggy, and Big helps tails realize that sonics actually right there. (something something, big will at some point say, “i’m sorry you lost your friend today too. but you helped me find mine, let’s find yours now too”)

27. Snow White or Cinderella

I love both, but I have to go with Cinderella.

28. Ariel or Belle

Again, I love both of these ladies, and if you had asked me this 5 years or more, I'd have easily answered Belle, but now I'll go for Ariel. She has one the most charming personalities and her story is just fantastic. Belle's is too, but Ariel got me more by juuuust a bit.

29. Pocahontas or Mulan

Aaaah, these questions are such a test! I love both of them so much and how they divert from the "girl-next-door" archetype. I'll go for Mulan. Her story and character journey are truly heartwarming and beautiful.

30. Aurora or Rapunzel

This one is a tad bit easier. I'll obviously go for Rapunzel. I love how bubbly and quirky but also strong-willed and courageous she is. Aurora definitely has that classic feminine, elegant air to her and I truly enjoy that about her, but ultimately, Rapunzel has my heart.

31. Tiana or Jasmine

I love both of these determined, feisty ladies, but I have to with Tiana cuz I like how grounded and down-to-earth she is. Jasmine is definitely a tigress who just wanted to be treated like a normal girl and I like that, but again, Tiana's the one who got a tighter grip on me.

32. Meg or Kida

Why must you put me through this torture? Haha. I adore both, but I find Kida slightly more intriguing because of her backstory, culture and warrior princess status, but Meg is still a great character with a strong, sassy personality and I enjoy that. Still, Kida wins here.

33. Stitch or Pooh

I love both, but I'm sorry, but Pooh is too freaking adorable, so I'll go for him. Stitch is still pretty cute, too!

34. Eugene Fitzherbert or Prince Eric

This one is going to be really controversial because of the massive popularity of one of these gentlemen (everybody knows who), but I'll go for Eric. Sorry Eugene, I love you very dearly, but Eric's just got that smile, and those eyes, and that hair... and he saved his freaking dog! Bro is a real one. Both are kings, but Eric wins my heart ❤️

35. Prince Charming or The Prince

Prince Charming. This one is the easiest of all the questions lol

36. Li Shang or John Smith

Li Shang, of course. This one is the second easiest one lol. Li Shang is charismatic and hot as hell. He wins by a thousand miles.

37. Prince Philip or The Beast (Adam, allegedly)

I love Philip, but I have to go for the Beast. I'd chosen Philip about a year ago, but I've gained a new appreciation for The Beast and, yes, even his human form. He actually isn't that bad. He still isn't on the others's level facially-speaking, but he is better than we give him credit for lol

38. Prince Naveen or Aladdin

I love Naveen in his glorious glory, but my man Aladdin just got a special place in my heart. He is very similar to Eric visually, but is truly the first Disney Prince that fully diverted from the classic prince archetype and that has to be respected. He is also so attractive, too. Naveen's still a certified babe, so don't get it twisted! Aladdin still comes out on top, though.

39. Hercules or Milo

Both are adorable nerds who fell in love with strong, badass women and ended up doing what's right for the love they had. However, I'll go for Hercules in this case cuz he is just too lovable!
