Once more thinking about something that permanently altered my brain's chemistry and the way I see life and I think I should share it here, even if no one is going to see. In the How to Train Your Dragon book series, there is a scene where Hiccup faces an enemy who owns an axe that has two sides, one that is golden and shiny, the other that is blackened, bloody and rusty. He would throw the axe in the air and make decisions depending on which side it would land on. Said axe eventually is used to decide Hiccup's fate. However, despite being trapped by the narrative in many ways, Hiccup is the protagonist of his own destiny. He reaches for the axe as it falls, and turns it himself so it lands on the golden side. Whether the axe was going to land on the gold or the dark side originally is irrelevant. He chooses to be alive and be free. Every time I go through a difficult moment, as I am right now, I think about this scene, as silly as it may be.
I am allowed to grab the destiny axe. And so are you.

Making Meaning, Not Sense
I took a contemporary creative writing class last semester, and one of my prof’s favourite things to say was “Make meaning, not sense.” What she meant by that is that by just putting two elements next to each other, they form meaning, even if they don’t necessarily make ‘sense’ next to each other.
We spent the entire semester making meaning without making sense. She encouraged us to not ‘over-explain’ ourselves—to let the readers interpret the meaning of our work in their own way.
While I would argue clarity is an important thing to consider when writing for others, this idea of allowing the readers interpretation can be a freeing exercise, and open up some unique creative decisions!
I rewrote the same piece twice—the first time trying to give context to the things I was talking about, and then the second time, letting those things just sit without trying to smother them. The first one was a good story, but it was my story—and may be forgettable for someone just passing by. The second allowed the readers their own interpretation—in a way, making the piece as much theirs as it was mine. I let up control in order to create meaning for the individuals who would read it.
All this is to say that while clarity and ‘sense’ is important in a story, there is a point where you may be smothering your meaning by attempting to make too much sense. Try experimenting by letting up the reins a bit and allowing your readers to take the work in their own unique direction. You can sacrifice a bit of sense to make a lot of meaning.
                Good luck!

don't think your dream college is gonna magically fix everything or make you feel whole. honestly, it could mess you up even more and make you hate yourself. chasing after that one college you're obsessed with might end up causing serious stress and depression. i'm not trying to freak you out, but your happiness shouldn't depend on a place that might not give a damn about you. sure, some colleges are normal, but i've never seen a creative soul or someone trying to heal/find themselves genuinely happy with their college life. don't hype this up too much. you're capable of way more than just nailing that college admission.

Showing Romantic Feelings Without Kissing
Let’s be real, the biggest way to show romantic attention between characters is through kissing. However, your characters shouldn’t have to kiss in order for it to be obvious that they’re in love. Here are some other ways to show that connection!
Hand holding
Sitting close to one another
Quick hugs
Secret glances
Light touches (arms, legs, etc.)
Napping together
Making sure the other eats/drinks
Inside jokes
Fixing the other’s clothing
Laughing way too hard at the other’s jokes
Going on walks together
Looking at something and wanting to show the other immediately
Late night walks/talks
Going to one another for advice
Leaning on each other’s shoulders
Driving each other home after a long day
Sharing drinks/food
Sharing clothing
Helping each other with work/other tasks
Incoherent bickering over nothing
Feeling possessive of one another (to a certain extent)
Telling each other’s friends about one another
