#even when my scalp started to hurt I kept frantically trying to get it back to a Normal Texture

I'm so grateful that my autism has sort of mellowed out as I aged, and that I'm less sensitive sensory-wise. because it's just so... I don't know, embarrassing? to think back on every meltdown.
it's embarrassing because everything hurt so badly, but it's not something I could talk about because it was all just mountains out of molehills. it's like having a breakdown and screaming over a paper cut, it's hard to even talk about without it sounding incredibly silly or making myself sound oversensitive and pathetic.

S/O is hit with an age-reversing quirk with Deku, Bakugou, and Todoroki
Tumblr media
Word count: 1,178
⚠️ mentions of vomit/throwing up
Tumblr media
Deku-
Tumblr media
You had gone missing after *another* villain attack at UA
Everyone went out looking for you, only to find a baby with your clothes on it.
They brought baby you back to campus to get re-aged in private, but your boyfriend was panicking and soon caught wind of the returning search party.
“Oh my gosh, who’s baby is that?”
“...it’s Y/N, dude.”
*cue Izuku passing out*
He didn’t actually pass out, but he came pretty damn close to it.
After calming down a bit, he immediately started researching things about this unusual quirk (while also playing with you).
He learned the hard way that babies are very hard to take care of
He was frantically looking through every book in the library with you in his arms when you suddenly grabbed hold of his hair and yanked.
“Ow! Please don’t do that.”
You, in true gremlin fashion, pull more of his hair.
Even though his scalp hurt, his arms were sore, and he had drool on his shoulder, he didn’t trust anyone else with you
So you stayed in his arms, murmuring lightly as he pulled book after book out of the library shelves.
Eventually, he found what he was looking for and celebrated, swinging you around in the air.
Baby brain: swing=happy :D
(You threw up on him)
Still, he ran to the teachers with his solution and puke covering the front of his shirt, you clinging to him the entire way.
Once you were back to normal, he told you all about what baby you had done. Burying your head in your arms out of embarrassment, you made him promise not to tell anyone else.
Bakugou-
Tumblr media
When you hadn’t showed up for school in the morning, he became worried and decided to skip class for an at-home visit
He was absolutely not expecting you to be waddling around your house as a toddler.
Even though he absolutely hates kids, he couldn’t just leave you there
So he begrudgingly called the hospital to fix you while holding you as far away from him as possible.
Good news: the hospital did have a cure to age-reversal (it seemed to happen quite often…). Bad news: the cure was waiting for it to wear off.
He was not happy about this
You were running all over the place, biting things and making messes
For the most part, he just kind of let you do your thing (such a responsible parent, I know).
That changed when you decided to use his arm as a chew toy
“WHAT THE FUCK. LET GO OF ME YOU DUMB BASTARD BABY!”
He shook you off, yelling obscenities and glaring at you.
You, being a child with no emotional control, started crying
It all went downhill from there.
He was extremely scared that he had hurt you, so he tried his hardest to comfort you
(he patted you on the head and distracted you with hand sparks)
Surprisingly, this worked. Despite never being good with kids, his hands were popular in the entertainment department.
He smiled softly as you stared at his sparking palms. “Do you like my quirk? Yeah, I bet you do.”
It was an rarely sweet moment
After that ordeal, you fell asleep and he stayed right by your side until you woke up.
While sleeping, the effects of the de-aging quirk wore off and you were fine again.
Trust me when I say he was extremely glad to have you back, even though he refused to show it.
“You normal now? Good, you were so annoying as a kid. I wanted to blast your stupid baby face off.”
Very sweet, Katsuki.
After you were well enough to speak, he made you explain what happened.
Turns out you had been hit by a fleeing villain during a freak hit-and-run
Your toddler self had managed to stumble 1/3 of a mile back home, where he found you
After hearing your story, he rolled his eyes and scoffed, scolding you for being such a dumbass.
Todoroki-
Tumblr media
Hoo boy. He’s definitely one of the worst with kids.
It’s not like he doesn’t try, but… children hate him, and he has no clue how to communicate with them
Thus landing him in an awkward situation when he was tasked with dealing with you, as a part of his hero training.
You had volunteered as a test subject of sorts, allowing the UA staff to age you down (with the help of a citizen with a de-aging quirk) so they could quiz the heroes-in-training on their kiddie protecting knowledge without the risk of harming actual children.
You, now seven years old, were going to be your boyfriend’s biggest challenge.
The situation was simple enough: you were “stuck” under a collapsed building, and he had to rescue and console you.
Climbing swiftly through the wreckage, Todoroki followed the sound of your cries until he found you.
Your leg was trapped under a large piece of debris, which he removed with a burst of ice.
He grabbed you and held you close to his chest, attempting to soothe your hiccups and frantic whimpers (7-year-old you is an incredibly good actor-)
After he had calmed you down a bit, he crouched down to inspect your wound
That’s when you smacked him.
“Don touch me!”
“I need to. You’re hurt.”
“Nuh-uh, I don’t want you to touch me.”
“Why not?”
“You’re gross :( I don’t let gross boys touch me.”
(The other students of 1-A, watching this unfold through security cameras, were cackling)
“...I’m not gross.”
“Prove it.” You crossed your arms, limping a bit as you kept up your injured facade
Todoroki let a shard of ice bloom in his hands and watched as your eyes lit up.
He allowed you to hold the little blob, effectively distracting you from the bandages he wrapped around your leg
When he was done patching you up, he grabbed you and carried you off (ignoring your cries of how mean he was for tricking you)
He brought you to the endpoint of the trial and set you down, clearing his exam.
Kid you was still incredibly angry at him, but you were pulled away to be re-aged before you could let him know just how much he pissed you off
“6/10, bonus points for quick thinking and distraction. Minus points for them calling you gross.” -Aizawa
After you had been re-aged, you were still a bit peeved (your memories were blurry, but you could remember being mad).
As you explained your predicament to your boyfriend, he ran his hand through his sweaty hair and smiled.
“I’d much rather deal with regular you being angry. You were a nightmare as a child.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean, Shoto? Are you saying I was a bad kid?”
“Uh. No? Maybe? I mean, in that situation, yes.”
You flicked him on the forehead. “I think I was a very polite child, thank you very much.”
“Whatever you say, sweetheart.”

A cold day and a death wish
Aka, that time Esteria saved Daniela's ass, earning Alcina's respect. Warning for gore!
---
January 20th 1983
Romanian winters sure were frigid in the mountains, so unlike the seaside climate she had grown accustomed to during her lifetime. A lifetime of being stuck in an unwanted family who fiercely shoved their ideas down her throat from the moment she had opened her wide blue eyes into the world.
Esteria shook her head to chase away the past's blurry memories and wrapped the blanket she had taken from her bed more tightly around her shoulders. Of course, the new state her body found itself in did not aid with keeping her warm, blood circulation all but becoming progressively useless since her infection, leaving her extremities perpetually cold. You win some you lose some, she thought with a chuckle.
It was the middle of the day, not that it mattered given the gloomy skies above. Esteria preferred to keep any activities she did in the afternoons, when Lady Dimitrescu was sure to be asleep in her chambers. It was best for the both of them really, as the woman was obviously displeased with what she saw as an invasion of her home in Esteria's presence at the castle. And in all fairness, she wasn't completely in the wrong. Mother Miranda had taken a particular interest in observing the development of her infection and, when she had to go away for a few months, she had apparently shoved that task onto the Lady's shoulders. And that, of course, included Esteria staying at the castle for the time being.
The three daughters would occasionally get up and roam around at any and all hours, doing god knows what, but Lady Dimitrescu was always a woman that stuck to her routine. And besides, the daughters could be quite pleasant company at times, happy to make conversation over a cup of tea, or blood nowadays, or showing her whatever project they were working on at the moment. Sometimes it was a painting while other times it was a new torture device. At least they kept things interesting, right?
The cold marble of the main hall's floor came in contact with skin and she mentally cursed herself for not putting on any shoes, or even socks, before leaving her bedroom. This place was so damn big and had her occasionally stopping to check her surroundings and make sure she had taken the right path, even after over a month of being there, and that only prolonged her walk in the uncomfortable temperature. She just wanted a cup of water and to return to her warm bed.
She was shuffling her way past the stairwell and towards the kitchen when the deafening blast of a gun, echoing ominously through ancient hallways, made her freeze in place. It was close, much too close for comfort.
Her head turned slowly, in an effort to locate the source of the sound but a second shot made her jump in place, eyes snapping to the hall leading to the entrance. Surely no staff member was instructed to shoot something inside the castle, and the daughters seemed to prefer more archaic weapons, so to speak.
Blanket promptly forgotten and left to limply slide off her shoulders and onto the floor, quick steps were taken towards what she hoped was nothing but a misstep. Quick and deliberate, moving close to the wall and keeping to the shadows, hiding as much as possible given her rather tall frame and stark white hair. She passed by grand paintings hanging against the beautifully patterned wallpaper and maneuvered around antique vases, all with precise footsteps, like a predator stalking its prey.
Up until a third shot, this time accompanied by an enraged scream, broke the silence.
"Filthy man-thing!"
Daniela's voice reached her with an unusual high pitch to it, although the growl that came after was no less fierce. There was an odd strain to it too, something that Esteria realized must be caused by pain.
No.
She hastily reached the entrance hall, cool air from the door left wide open hitting her in the face like the world's coldest slap across her features. It made her lips twist into a snarl at the sensation.
Snarl that turned into a growl when her eyes fell upon the scene unfolding there.
Daniela, the ever so sweet youngest daughter, slumped against one of the marble pillars surrounding the portrait of her and her sisters and trying to stop her knees from buckling and giving way to what could only be immense pain. Her sickle was held tightly in one hand, knuckles turning white from the effort, while her eyes sparked like angry mismatched embers towards the man in front of her. A man, who she did not recognize, with a shotgun pointed directly at her, face contorted with anger.
Upon noticing Esteria, he took a handful of stumbling steps back, the barrel now moving between the two women frantically.
"Stay back!" She did. Esteria did not have Alcina's healing abilities and was not particularly keen on getting a bullet to the face. For now. "You wretched witches! Y- You took my wife from me. She came here for work and never came back!"
Daniela groaned for a moment, apparently gathering her strength to reply. "Maybe she doesn't want to go back." Her voice, despite coming out raspy, was sickly sweet, the same tone she used so many times before when toying with her prey, but now the dripping malice behind her words was on full display.
The hunter stomped forward, aiming for another shot, and that's when Esteria's body finally reacted, jumping forward.
Transformations were never painful, no, it felt more like a really good stretch. A stretch of bone and skin down to the very cells, that made her body tingle for a meager moment until a gangly beast with wide eyes like the deepest caverns full of water and silt took her place. The one thing that required some getting used to however, was the mild disorienting sensation that came with her normal vision being completely replaced by black and white and all the grayscale in between, forming fuzzy silhouettes that were brighter or dimmer according to heat signatures.
Long talons screeched against the smooth floor when she pounced, crashing into his body within the blink of an eye.
The shot was fired, however not at its intended target but ending up embedded somewhere in a wall behind them. It broke something priceless for sure, but no matter. There was something more important to deal with at the moment.
The man thrashed under the weight of her claws, his hands trying in vain to push or cause any form of damage. His voice mixed terror and rage in screams that all but scratched against her eardrums.
And he was an intruder.
Not in her home, no, this was not her home to begin with. But if nothing else, she respected Lady Dimitrescu deeply and her daughters had grown on her more than she would like to admit. Hurting Daniela certainly warranted punishment. And punishment she delivered.
Her mouth opened in a fraction of a second, elongated jaws forming an unnaturally wide angle and sharp fangs glistening in the low light. Without another moment of hesitation, she dipped her head, maw clamped shut around his face and those same fangs digging their way through scalp and skin and bone and everything that lay beneath. Sickening cracks, that were more felt than heard with the irking scraping of bone against bone, were accompanied by pained screeches. Esteria shook her head slightly, the movements dislodging some fragments from her mouth and tongue, and then she jerked her head back. Still shut jaws took with them a good portion of the cranium, that was promptly spat out and sent rolling on the marble floor smearing it in crimson, finally putting a stop to any sound or movement from the man.
There was no time to dwell around the corpse however, as a small whimper made its way to her ears. In a moment she was back to her normal self, although her robes were hanging rather loosely and were now soaked in blood on the front, and taking long steps towards the source of the noise.
She kneeled in front of Daniela, who was now also on the floor. "Hey. Hey darling, I'm here, what's wrong?"
One hand came to gently caress a pallid cheek, making sure to use the back of her hand to avoid her talons causing any further pain. She almost recoiled at how frigid the skin was. Frigid and cracking, feeling almost crystalline under her fingers.
Surprisingly enough, Daniela clung to her, shaky hands grabbing fistfuls of her robes and slumping forward with a couple choked sobs.
"P- please. Take me-... take me out of h- here."
Esteria did just that, scooping the girl into her arms and quickly walking down the same hallway she had come from. A few servants were starting to gather around, wide eyed, having heard the commotion and coming to check on what was going on.
"Shut that damned door," Esteria all but barked while stepping around them, although everyone quickly jumped out of her way.
She did not wait for an answer, as she started to make her way up the stairs, when her eyes landed on none other than Alcina Dimitrescu, coming down and freezing for a moment upon noticing the shaking form of her youngest daughter in her arms. The Lady's face contorted with anger, but before any accusations could be made, Esteria spoke up, voice coming in a rushed breath.
"A hunter came in. Please just-... where should I put her?"
Alcina did not answer her however, opting to bend down and take her daughter into her own arms, features immediately softening upon hearing a small whimper from Daniela caused by being shifted around. She cooed at the girl for a moment, whispering words of reassurance that were far too quiet for anyone else to hear.
She turned around, heading back up without another word, and any sensible person would take it as their cue to get lost and mind their own business. But growing up in the woods like some Peter Pan wannabe didn't make sensible people now did it. Esteria followed along, quick steps barely keeping up with the Lady's long determined strides. She followed until they reached a bedroom unfamiliar to her, though by the furniture and decorations, she could assume it was the youngest's chambers. She stepped inside and watched as she placed her daughter on a small couch placed right in front of the fireplace, soft furs covering the patterned cushions.
Not wanting to simply sit by, she helped by gathering a few extra blankets, gears finally turning in her brain, and handing them to Alcina, who by now was gently stroking red locks as Daniela all but glued herself to her mother's lap. Golden eyes snapped at her but the blankets were accepted, unfolded and quickly wrapped around the shivering girl.
Esteria couldn't help placing a hand on Daniela's shoulder and giving it a gentle reassuring squeeze, although she was unsure whether or not it was felt through the multiple layers.
She didn't look at the other woman when she spoke, eyes fixated on her hand, seemingly finding her talons of interest at the moment. "Are they… weak to the cold?"
It was barely a whisper and the reply took so long to arrive that Esteria started to think she had only imagined asking in the first place.
"Were it not for the fact that you're Mother Miranda's pet project, I would kill you for knowing that." Alcina's tone was flat, but the conviction it carried left no room for interpretation on the truthfulness of her words.
Esteria chuckled. That sure was a way to thank someone for saving her daughter.
She decided to take that as her cue to leave, raising slowly and making her way to the door left ajar. A mental note to change her robes and take a bath before returning to bed was also made, the sticky sensation on her skin quite unpleasant. Before she could get a hold on the door handle and exit the room however, the Lady's voice called out for her, uncharacteristic tenderness making its way where sharp pointy edges were mere moments ago.
"Thank you. I'm glad you were there to intervene before any real damage was done."
Esteria managed to hold back a grimace and a snort, remembering that some damage had definitely been done, although most likely to an antique decoration or painting hit by a stray bullet. Keeping her expression under control, she half turned her head, fond smile adorning her lips.
"Of course my Lady."
"Just call me Alcina."

melting fire
Bela had never been so hot before.
Delirious and fever-stricken, she squirmed on her bed, desperately trying to escape the burning heat inside of her. It was like she was laying in the hot sand of a desert, slowly being fried by the sun that wasn’t there. Because she was in her bedroom, shrouded by dim shadows, and the only light was coming from a singular gas lamp on her desk, flickering faint yellow-gold across the floor. But it was so hot, the blankets like plains of fire on her skin, doing little to bring her any comfort.
A soft moan managed to escape Bela’s flaking lips. Her mouth was dry, tongue like burnt coals. She desperately needed water--not even blood, but nice, cold water--but she couldn’t get up. She could barely even move aside from her twisting and turning in a vain attempt to get comfortable.
Her breath came out thin, reedy, and too-hot. She thought she could spout flames, maybe. She had to be burning alive.
There was a squeak as her bedroom door creaked open. She pried open her heavy eyelids to see two silhouettes creeping towards her bed. She instinctively bared her teeth and spat at the trespassers, too weak to raise her claws to defend herself.
“Someone is cranky,” teased a voice.
Wait-- she knew that voice.
Bela settled as her sisters perched on the edge of the bed.
“Sorry,” she rasped, her voice weak and hoarse from illness. “I’m kinda delirious.”
“Kinda?” Cassandra raised an amused eyebrow. “Do you know what you were doing before you passed out earlier?”
“Do I want to know?” Bela asked nervously.
Daniela helpfully supplied her with details: “You were all wobbly and Mother set a hand on your shoulder and said it was to keep you from falling. Your response was, ‘It’s okay, five-second rule.’”
Bela’s face flushed red--redder than it already was than her fever. “Oh--”
Daniela didn’t relent: “And then you started stroking Mother’s arm hair and said, ‘You’d make such a good carpet.’”
“Okay, that’s enou--”
“You also said, ‘my bones feel wet, may I have a napkin?’”
“Daniela--”
“Oh, and we can’t forget, while at breakfast and you were still trying to act like you were okay: ‘Coffee doesn’t taste like coffee, but it sure does taste like brown.’”
“Okay, okay!” Bela yelped, then coughed into her blankets. “I get it. I was out of it.”
“Very out of it,” Cassandra said, stroking her claws through Bela’s sweaty hair. Bela, rationalizing that she couldn’t get any more embarrassed than she already was, leaned her head into her sister’s touch, letting out a soft purr of contentment. Cassandra’s talons were nimble and uncharacteristically gentle against her burning scalp.
“Where is Mother?” Bela asked.
“Aww, are we not good enough company for you, Beli?” Daniela teased playfully.
“I didn’t say that!” Bela squeaked. She hunched her shoulders in. “I was just wondering.”
“Somewhere around here,” Cassandra said vaguely. “She’ll probably come to check on you soon.”
Bela nodded sluggishly. Her head was beginning to fill with fog again. “Alright…” she murmured.
“Aww,” Daniela cooed. “She’s getting all silly again.” She reached out and lightly dragged her claws down one of Bela’s clammy cheeks, probably thinking she was being comforting, when really her touch was just ticklish.
Bela bared her teeth at her, though she barely opened her eyes. “Shut it.”
Daniela tittered.
“Well, we’ll let you rest,” Cassandra said, tugging on Daniela’s arm.
“Sleep well!” Daniela said as she was pulled out of the room.
“Thanks,” Bela replied.
The door shut and she was left in darkness once again.
Bela rolled onto her side and curled up in her blankets. A moment later, she rolled onto her other side, but it did little to help her discomfort. Her body was aching all over and no position was good enough.
Outside, the wind was howling. Another snowstorm was blowing in, loud and powerful. She turned over again to watch the snowfall. The snowflakes flew like dozens of little whiteflies behind the glass, twisting and twirling through the air. It made her think of her own flies, and she broke off a piece of her skin into a cluster of insects. She was desperately lonely and wanted something to interact with since she didn’t have her sisters or mother there with her.
With blurry eyes, Bela watched dazedly as her insects flew around her head. She held out a finger and they lined up on it in a perfect arrangement: blowfly, flesh fly, dogbane beetle, Spanish fly, black vine weevil, drain fly, green bottle fly, clothes moth, click beetle, room spinning, ears ringing, eyes shutting…
Bela’s head jerked back when she began to nod off, sending her bugs into a scattering cloud of frantic wingbeats. She blinked her eyes furiously, but it did little to dispel the fuzziness over everything. It was like she was looking underwater. She rubbed her heavy eyelids, and moving her arms was like trying to move solid beams of lead.
Her fever flared. She moaned weakly in pain.
Her skin was baking, boiling right off of her bones. Her limbs were sacks of heated stones and smoldering embers that she had to drag around with her, and her ears simply felt like they were lit on fire. Her cheeks felt like someone was holding hot iron to the sides of her face and wouldn’t let go, no matter how loud she screamed.
To put it simply, she was like a roasted lamb on a spit, rotating slowly above hungry flames. Sometimes, she had fallen into their orange-gold mouths. She could almost feel the flaming tongues licking at her skin…
Bela squirmed, whining faintly. She couldn’t handle this. She couldn’t take this heat. She used to think the cold was bad, but this-- this was just awful.
She had to escape it.
As though beckoning her, the blizzard howled.
Bela raised her head--which was rather difficult, as it felt like it weighed a ton--and squinted. The snow usually wasn’t very enticing, but something about it now seemed to call to her. It was inviting her to join its cool embrace, promising to soothe her raging fever. She had to oblige to it.
Sliding out of bed, Bela staggered towards the window. The glass was cool against her palms when she pressed her hands to it, but felt even better on her burning forehead. She let out a sigh of relief as the chill invaded her, but it wasn’t good enough. She needed more. She needed to be rid of this fire inside of her.
Bela pushed against the window. It didn’t budge. She whined and pushed harder. It still didn’t budge. Mother kept them locked for good reason, but Bela needed to get out now. She felt like she was being cremated and didn’t know how much longer she could handle it.
Finally, after a few moments of desperate struggling, the window relented under her assault and she was embraced by the soothing cold. It didn’t hurt as much as she thought it would. It felt…nice.
Letting out a sigh of relief, Bela relaxed her body and shut her eyes to rest.
--- --- ---
Alcina was alerted by the sound of glass shattering. She had been idly flipping through a book when she heard the horrendous smashing sound. Instantly, she snapped to her feet and began striding down the hallway until she got to Bela’s room. Upon opening the door, she was greeted by a blast of cold air, which was as freezing as the black ice that suddenly sprinted through her veins.
“Bela?” Alcina shouted. Stepping inside, she noticed that the window was broken open and her eldest daughter was nowhere to be seen. “Bela?!”
Alcina rushed over to the crater created in the glass and looked out. Despite the darkness of the night, she could still distinctly make out the figure of Bela in the snow below.
She didn’t look like she was moving.
“Bela!!”
Alcina ran out of the room, where she was promptly met by her other two daughters. They both instantly leaped away from the doorway with yelps when the cold wind brushed against their legs. She quickly shut the door.
“Mother, what happened?” Cassandra asked.
“Stay here,” Alcina said instead of answering. She then turned and sprinted down the hallway and outside, nearly clipping her head on the doorframe.
When she found Bela, she may have been more concerned about her falling from the second-story window if it wasn’t for how leached her skin was. Her eldest daughter was icy to the touch, her skin as brittle as weak glass in the unforgiving cold. Alcina scooped her up into her arms, holding her close to her chest to protect her from the vicious lashing of the snowstorm as she carried her back inside.
Bela had been out there for less than three minutes, but Alcina’s mind was still running in panicked circles. Was it enough to kill Bela? Was her baby girl about to die in her arms? Alcina’s heart seized at the mere thought of losing one of her daughters. She frantically went over her own notes in her head: the flies generally began hibernating at temperatures below ten degrees Celsius, and it was definitely below ten degrees Celsius out there. When that happens, their metabolism drops and they go into a state of lethargy, which then causes extreme weakness and fatigue. There was also the pain and sensitivity that came from the cold, and though Bela didn’t seem like she was in freezing agony, Alcina still couldn’t be too sure.
It was then that Bela stirred, and Alcina snapped her head down. Bela was squirming in her arms, whining ever so faintly. She didn’t seem to be in pain, she just seemed distressed and very uncomfortable.
“Mother,” Bela panted. “Please--”
“It’s alright now, my love,” Alcina said, carrying Bela over to one of the many fireplaces in the castle, swiping up a blanket folded over a cushioned chair as she went. “It’s alright. I’ve got you.” She squeezed her daughter close to her chest, not quite realizing that she may have been smothering her. “It’s okay. Mother’s here now.”
“No-- no--” Bela tried to wiggle out of her grasp, but she was much too weak. “Hot-- too hot--”
Alcina frowned. She had been wondering how and why Bela got outside, but now it made sense.
Was her fever really that bad?
“You can’t be cold, darling,” Alcina said, crouching down in front of the fire, not releasing Bela from her vice. She wrapped her in the blanket, despite her wriggling. Under her touch, Bela's skin was still worryingly frigid and dry. She hoped the snow wouldn't leave blisters. “You must stay warm.”
“No--” Bela’s claws tugged feebly at Alcina’s dress. If it weren’t caused by illness, then it may have been cute. “Mother, please…”
Alcina sighed. She shifted Bela into one arm (it wasn’t exactly hard to do) and brushed her sweaty hair out of her face. Bela leaned into the touch, her eyelids fluttering shut. She purred faintly.
“You need to be warm,” Alcina told her. As hard as it was to resist her child’s begging, she couldn’t just go throw Bela out into the snow. She had to keep her near the fire, where her body could go back to its normal temperature.
Alcina cupped the back of Bela’s head and pressed her face into her neck, rocking her slowly. She should have kept a better eye on her. She should have been there, taking care of her. Now an awful chill had taken lodge in her precious daughter’s body and she was worried that it wasn’t going to come out.
“Mother?”
Alcina turned to see Cassandra and Daniela. They both looked simultaneously curious and worried.
“Is Bela okay?” Daniela asked.
“She will be,” Alcina answered, holding Bela closer until she was holding onto her like a baby koala bear. She was hoping her body heat would help dispel the ice inside of Bela’s own being. “Your sister thought it would be a good idea to break her window and go out into the snow.”
“I’m hot,” Bela whined. She quickly followed her words up with a purr as Alcina stroked her hair.
Daniela giggled. “Beli, I thought you were the smart one!”
“‘M gonna…turn you into a ceiling fan,” Bela growled without opening her eyes. “But…too tired… Maybe later…”
Daniela giggled again. Cassandra snorted into her hand. Even Alcina, despite her worry, couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Darlings, can you get a wet rag for me?” Alcina asked her other two daughters.
Bela chuffed against her neck.
“A moderately cold one. But not too cold. Just slightly below lukewarm. Please.”
Cassandra and Daniela both nodded and raced off to retrieve the item before the other.
Slowly, the cold was draining from Bela’s body, chased away by the tag-team effort of the fire and Alcina’s body heat. Her fever, however, quickly became apparent once again, searing right through the back of her gown and into Alcina’s hand while she rubbed up and down her spine. No wonder she had broken a window just to get outside; she was burning up.
“I’m sorry for not keeping a better eye on you,” Alcina said, shifting her daughter in her arms. “I should have been watching you to make sure this never happened. Though, I never expected you to break a window…”
“Not your fault,” Bela said, her breath hot against Alcina’s neck. “I was being stupid.”
Alcina leaned her back slightly, cupping the back of her head with one hand. “Are you slightly more awake now?”
“A little,” Bela said, her eyes glassy and half-lidded. “Feel like I’m on fire, though…”
Alcina frowned and tucked Bela back against her. She worriedly ran her fingers through Bela’s hair, which was damp with a mix of sweat and melted snow.
“I’m sorry I can’t do more for you, my darling,” Alcina said. “Damn, why did you and your sisters have to be weak to the cold? I would run you an ice bath if that didn’t put you at the risk of--” She didn’t finish that sentence. She shook her head. “Why flies? Why something that can’t survive in the cold? Why not something like-- like-- like birds!”
“Better than being hurt by heat,” Bela pointed out. “Then the fever probably would have killed me already.”
Alcina winced. “I suppose you’re right.”
“‘Course I am. ‘M the smart one.”
That got a small chuckle out of Alcina. “Your hubris is showing, darling.”
“No, yours is,” Bela mumbled, drifting off into a feverish, half-awake daze of slurring and purring.
Despite her remaining worry, Alcina couldn’t help but chuckle once again. She rocked Bela slowly until Cassandra and Daniela returned with the rag, Daniela being the one to present it to her. She thanked them, then shifted Bela in her arms so she could wipe her face down with it. Bela shuddered at the cold water on her heated skin, but let out a soft coo of pleasure.
“Thank you,” Bela whispered, cracking open her eyes slightly.
Alcina gave her a tender smile. “You’re welcome. Now, rest, my sweet girl. I will watch over you until you feel better.”
Afterward, she would make arrangements to strengthen the windows.

under the moonlight ; george weasley
george weasley x ravenclaw!reader
word count: 2,451
summary: applying lipgloss and clipping butterfly clips into your best friends hair. that’s cute. wonder what it would lead to.
warnings: kissing/making out, maybe a few swear words, lack of capitalization, probably grammar mistakes and nothing else i can think of. let me know if i should add any :)
a/n: i tried to make this fic have a gender neutral reader so let me know if i got it wrong at one point. i did not proof read this, i am so sorrydbnd. i would also love to hear some feedback! i really hope you enjoy!
“georgie, stay still.” you said in a jokingly frustrated manner. the story of how you ended up sitting on your bed, in front of your best friend, the person you were deeply in love with and putting some lipgloss on his lips? let’s just say you were bored. all your dorm mates were out, and someone came in just in time. you were honestly very surprised when he agreed but very glad.
“you know i can’t ever stay still.” he started moving around, trying to get comfortable on the bed. “blimey, this is so weird. why does it feel like that?” you chuckled about how adorable he is. you thought about how much you want to cuddle up to him, kiss his soft lips, trail your hands down on his soft skin. you wanted to hold him like he was the most precious thing in the world. well, he is to you. but you knew you couldn’t do any of that. he would never feel the same.
“it feels like what?” you said, chuckles present.
“it’s.” he trailed off and frantically made hand gestures, trying to think of a word for this odd feeling on his lips. “gooey. i don’t know. it’s just weird.” you chuckle again and finally put the tube down.
“now, smack your lips.”
“wait what? smack them? how the bloody hell am i supposed to do that?” he said, genuinely confused. you just laughed and said,
“do this.” you smacked your lips, trying to show him how to do it. he tried to do so but ended up looking like a quacking duck. you broke down to a fit of laughter when george tried to do the same.
“what? i did what you showed me.” he pouted as you let out a little giggle.
“nothing.”
“nothing? nothing, huh?” you shook your head, trying to hold back a laugh as he narrowed his eyes on you. he looked so stupid trying it. still very attractive though. surprisingly, he just kept quiet and let it go.
“do you really wear this everyday?”
“no. only when i want to.”
“which is, everyday?”
“huh, yeah.” you smiled, barely remembering picking up the said tube every morning. you just smiled to yourself but then you realized,
“wait, how’d you know i wear lipgloss everyday? i don’t remember telling you about it ‘til now.” you furrowed your eyebrows.
“it’s not easy to miss. your lips are always glossy and shining under the lights.” he said so easily like he thought about it everyday. you were a bit taken aback. but in a good way. he noticed you. he noticed your lips. you were suprised but it made your heart melt. little did you know, he always observed you and your beautiful features like you were an expensive artwork. but you didn’t know that, you were oblivious.
“that’s cute.”
“you think i’m cute?”
“what? no, i said ‘that’s cute’ not ‘you’re cute’.” you replied with a slight panic in your voice. you watched george smirk which led to you getting all flustered, looking everywhere but his face. this cheeky bastard.
“yeah, alright.” oh my, that smirk. you thought you could collapse underneath his stare. you playfully rolled your eyes as an attempt to cover your flustered state and moved on. you stood up to your drawer, putting the tube back in and pulled out a little pouch full of colorful little plastic clips that are wonderfully shaped like butterflies.
“what’s that?” george asked as you sat back down in front of him.
“hair clips.” you looked up at george who was wearing a befuddled expression. “you clip it to your hair. kind of like decorating a Christmas tree but the tree’s your hair.” you explained in an odd but simple way, hoping that you wouldn’t have to explain any further.
“oh, right. i know now. ginny wears those sometimes. wait, are you gonna be putting that on my hair?”
“well, yeah. if you want me to.” you answered, making sure he’s alright with it. he thought about it for a few moments.
“well, sure why not. you seem excited about it so i bet i’ll look pretty.” he said, flipping his long red hair over his shoulder. you laughed at this and continued to open up the pouch. you scooched over to george’s back and grabbed a small tuft from the left side of his soft hair, dividing it into three equal bunches. you overlapped each of the bunches of hair over each other carefully, trying not to hurt the boy in front of you. you created a beautiful loose braid that was small enough to be clipped in with the mini butterflies. you cautiously grabbed the braid, careful not to break it and grabbed a clip while doing so. you held it right on the middle of the backside of his head and secured it with the clip. you were pretty proud of it, not gonna lie.
“are you done yet?” george asked, impatient as always.
“not yet, just hold on.” george groaned playfully as you gathered a tuft of hair from the right side and repeated the process. the tip of your tongue was out due to you concentrating, not wanting to mess this up. sticking your tongue out while you were concentrating was another thing george always noticed about you. he found it absolutely precious but he didn’t say a word about it.
after you braided the right bunch, you held it near the other braid and clipped it tightly.
“ow!” george squealed as he felt the clip against his scalp and the way his head tightened.
“oh! i’m so sorry.” you said as you took it out and held it back in more loosely.
“is that good now?”
“yeah, it’s good. okay, can i see now?”
“no, i’m not yet done.”
“merlin, how long will this take?”
“just wait a few more minutes. it didn’t even take that long.”
“yeah, right. well it felt like hours.”
“no it didn’t.”
“yes, it did.” both of you exchanged an unneeded playful banter over something so ridiculous but this was quite normal for you two.
“alright, shut up. i’m trying to finish this.”
“alright, fine.” you could hear his playful pout through his words.
you collected a few of the clips on your one hand, picking up the ones you were going to use with the other. you grabbed one and secured it near the braid and did this again and again all over his hair. soon enough, his hair was filled with so many colors of fascinating butterflies and you loved it. it was so pretty and colorful. you stood up and went in front of george to adjust the little strands of hair that was on his face. george just sat there, a bit confused but with a huge smile on his face as he saw how focused you were. he found you stunning.
“merlin, you’re beautiful.” he whispered suddenly under his breath but even if he didn’t want it to be, it was loud enough for you to hear.
“what?” you asked, a slight blush creeping on your cheeks. you heard the words he said very clearly, you were just in disbelief. did i hear that right? did he just call me beautiful? i mean he has done that before but this seemed- i don’t know, sincere. these thoughts have been running through your head. does he like me back? no, he’s probably just being nice. right?
“er- the moon looks beautiful tonight, doesn’t it?” he stumbled with his words a bit, contemplating whether or not to tell you what he actually thought.
“oh- yeah, it always does.” you answered, a bit disappointed and bemused. you thought you heard him right the first time but you figured it was just your mind messing with you. trying to make you happy and distract you from the fact that he will never like you back. that’s what you thought. you tried your best to brush all of this off but it wasn’t exactly working.
“well, we’re done.”
“finally, that took forever.”
“please don’t start this again.” he chuckled as you said this to him, sighing.
“yeah, yeah alright. i won’t.” he smiled at you and examined your face for a while. your features were refined under the shine of the moonlight that reflected through the open window. you did the same to him, staring at his chocolate brown eyes that glimmered so gracefully. you swore that you felt the space between you two grow smaller and you weren’t against it but you suddenly became aware of what you were doing and decided to snap out of it.
“anyways, c’mon. let’s go look in the mirror.” you stood up and held your hand out, gesturing for him to hold on to it. he abruptly broke out of his trance and grabbed it as he let you carry him up. you then lead him to the mirror in your dorm which was right next to the large bronze arch window. he looked at the mirror and smiled.
“wow, i look cute.” you laughed at this and looked at him though the mirror. he did look cute. so cute. you noticed a strand of his hair standing up so you reached out to it and straightened it out. it was george’s turn to look at you in the mirror. he thought that the way you did everything gently was so telling to your personality. you may be a fierce person but you had a good heart. you stood up against anything that you knew was wrong and you stayed loyal to your loved ones. even though you’re all of these, you were very kind and caring. you had a soft spot. specifically for george.
he turned his head towards you and stared at you. you looked back at him confused.
“what?” you chuckled quite nervously, starting to get self-conscious. you thought there was something on your face so you put your hand up to it and felt around.
“no, don’t do that. there’s nothing on your face.” he said calmly, grabbing your hand away from your face softly.
“then why are you staring at me like that?”
“because.” he hesitated a bit but decided that his feelings were kept for way too long and that now was the chance. “you look gorgeous.”
you thought you were surprised when you misheard that from him earlier but now, you really were. though, you still felt as if he was just being nice to you after you fixed his hair up for him. you decided to act calm and ‘play his little game’.
“thank you, georgie. you look dazzling as well.” you laughed as you turned around to head back to your bed.
“no, y/n. i’m serious.” he said to you, wanting you to listen carefully. serious? what does he mean by serious? you heard him take a deep breath before saying,
“look, okay. y/n, i have liked you ever since i first met you.” you were taken aback. were you hearing this right? if it was another trick your brain was playing on you, you didn’t like it. you’ve had enough of its little lies. but it wasn’t a lie. your brain didn’t make it up. it was true.
“when i first saw you on that train, i thought that you were the most beautiful being that i’ve ever seen walk on this earth. i always thought that you were perfect. i mean, you are so amazing, how could anyone not like you? but when you defended fred and i when we did that prank and when you did it again and again, i knew i was in love with you.” george said with so much passion and sincerity. you stood there in shock, trying to process what you just heard.
“i know it all came so suddenly but i’ve felt that way for a long time now and i just needed to take it off my chest.” you looked at him and smiled. so wide that your cheeks were hurting.
“i love you too, georgie. ever since you helped me on that charms homework that i stressed so much about.” you finally spit it out. you were proud of yourself. and george was pleasantly surprised.
“really?”
“yeah.” you both chuckled at your obliviousness. the thing you both feared the most from happening didn’t happen. you were filled with joy at that moment. that was until he grabbed your hand and walked closer to you. you knew what was gonna happen and of course, you were happy about it but you were nervous. he leaned closer to you to the point where your foreheads touched.
“can i kiss you?” he wanted to make sure that you were okay with it. and you were. you took a deep breath in,
“yes.” that was when you felt your lips touch one another’s. it was that moment when you felt like you were in heaven. like it wasn’t real. you wrapped your arms around his neck as he wrapped his around your waist. your lips moved together slowly and fireworks erupted in your heart. you felt butterflies in your stomach. you could taste the strawberry flavor of the lipgloss as you kissed him. you continued doing so with so much love that you didn’t hear the door open.
“oh, dear. sorry for disturbing you.”
“yeah, we’ll just give you privacy.” said two very familiar voices. this caught both you and george in surprise, breaking off the kiss.
“luna, padma, cho. i’m so sorry.” you apologized, feeling shy around your dorm mates for the first time in a while.
“oh, no. it’s alright. it’s our fault.” padma said, slightly smirking.
“we’re happy for you, though!” luna replied in her soft and soothing voice that you loved. both you and george just smiled sheepishly.
“anyways, we’ll get on going.” cho said, breaking off the tension. as your beloved dorm mates left the room, padma winked at you as the others giggled.
“that was interesting.” george smiled.
“yeah.” you bowed your head down trying to hide the clear embarrassment on your face. george lifted your chin and grabbed your face softly, kissing you one more time.
“jeez, do you already miss my lips?”
“i’m gonna be completely honest, yeah. they taste good.” you laughed loudly at this.
“yours did as well. it was probably just the lipgloss.”
“oh, yeah. right, forgot i was still wearing that.”you both laughed and kissed one last time before happily walking out your dorm hand in hand. needless to say, this relationship is the cutest and most chaotic thing anyone at hogwarts has ever seen.

“Clementine, honey…”
“I’m not going to hurt you, sweetie.”
Eyes clouded over, a lifeless thunderstorm. Rumblings deep in the throat, hissing through rotten teeth and bleeding gums. Split fingernails, gunk seeped beneath the bed. Torn flesh from the familiar faces of those who doted on her.
Her father’s shattered watch.
“We’re going to be a family, Clementine.”
The bathroom faucet dripped mucky water. Sour. Cold, burning the inside of her nose. Stains on the walls and in the carpet. The man’s words anything but comforting. He lied. She believed him. Clementine believed every word he said. He promised he would take her to her parents, made her promise not to tell Lee.
He didn’t know anything.
And yet, in the end, that man kept his promise. He reunited her with her parents. Just like she wanted.
Fist-full of hair ripped from her mother’s scalp. Her favorite necklace- a birthday gift from her father- tarnished and broken. Jaw dislocated, left to hang loose. Nothing behind the clouds. Not even when met with her little girl’s amber heartbreak.
“Clem?” Lee’s voice, rocks against sandpaper in his throat, brought her back to the jewelry store. His hand gripped hers, and his thumb brushed over her knuckles. He looked worse now, even worse than he did in the hotel. The dim lighting left a cast of gray over his sweaty skin. His arm- or, what was left of it, swelled beneath the blood-caked bandages.
He tried to swallow, and coughed. His yellowing gaze avoided hers as he brought himself up into a better sitting position.
“My arm is gone because I cut it off.”
Cut it off?
“W-wha-” she started. “W-why would you do that?”
Lee squeezed her hand. He wouldn’t look at her.
“Because I was bitten, Clem.”
Bitten... Bitten?
No. That didn’t… that didn’t make sense. Clementine waited for him to take it back, to correct himself.
He didn’t.
He stared at the floor.
Nausea bubbled in her belly, slipped up to grasp her frantic heart.
“No! No, please, no, no, that’s not true!”
“Yes, it is.”
“No, it’s not!”
“Clementine-”
“No!” Her small, shaky fists pressed into his chest, pushing and pulling. Warmth burned behind her eyes. “Please…”
“I’m so sorry, Clem. I’m supposed to take care of you but I… I can’t now. I’m sorry.”
Not Lee. Not now. Not ever.
“We can’t stay here.”
Clementine didn’t believe him, didn’t want to move. Moving meant going forward, meant time passed, and that meant…
Lee’s much larger than her, always much stronger and smarter, but now his knees buckled. He would’ve nearly toppled over if not for the support of a shattered jewelry counter. Clementine gripped his side in an effort to steady him.
“I’ll help you,” she told him. “You can lean on me.”
“I’m okay… I’m okay.”
“I thought I was helping by bringing you in here.”
This place was safe. It was safer than being out there with the herd. Walkers roamed everywhere, and when Lee fell over, she thought he had died. It’s what broken the shared stare between her and the remains of her mother, and she nearly cried out when she felt his slow breath shudder through cracked lips. He was alive. She would save him. She would use what he taught her and look for a safe place for them to wait out the walkers.
It started to sink in that Clementine really didn’t know anything.
“You're just learnin', hon,” Lee reassured her. “Never let yourself get trapped, okay? Make sure you look for a way out in every place you find. We'll get out of here, and just don't do it again.”
“I won’t, I won’t.”
Lee made it to the other end of the destroyed jewelry store, but not to the door. He fell to his knees and shifted to lean against the wall next to the rusted metal heater. When he tried to get back up again, he nearly blacked out.
The door’s right there.
They’re so close.
“Clem...I-I can't move… This is it for me here.”
“Please!” Clementine begged. “Please, try to get up!”
He couldn’t.
Blood hacked up from his lungs to his lips and chin. Wet woe dripped down Clementine’s cheeks as she watched him, powerless to do anything. She couldn’t carry him, she couldn’t drag him. What was she supposed to do? What would they do?
“You don't have much time,” Lee winced as he caught his breath. “You gotta do something, fast. You need to get out of here as soon as you can.”
“I can’t leave you.”
She couldn’t- she wouldn’t. That wasn’t an option. If she couldn’t carry him, if he couldn’t walk, they would stay here. They would stay here and figure it out. There had to be an answer.
Gurgled grunts muffled behind the door. Through the glass window, a walker in a police uniform trapped in a chair, a gun and set of keys attached to his belt. Leather skin clung to his bones, and stretched with every snarl at her. Boney fingers grasp at the air between them, and drool dripped down onto his uniform.
“Don't be afraid of him, honey. You're smart. He isn't. You're smarter than all of them.”
She’s smarter. She’s faster. Lee told her it was okay, and she believed him. Don’t be afraid.
“There are handcuffs on the ground… get them.”
Ice pricked the inside of her gut.
Metal scraped against the ground. Clinking. Heavy.
“Bring ‘em here… Put them on me,” Lee motioned to the heater. “Attach me to this.”
No-
“No matter what happens, you're safe then.”
She hesitated, glancing between him and his hand.  “I-I don't know…”
“Just do it, sweetie. Make sure they're tight. This way, you’ll be safe no matter what.”
Knees bruised against the hard floor, she did as she was told. A soft click. An echo. Attached.
Silence.
Lee tried to smile at her.
Getting the keys and gun from the walker didn’t go well. The walker got free and would’ve taken a taste of her leg if not for the heavy pillar she knocked over that landed over his back. When Lee kicked the baseball bat toward her, she didn’t even have to think. Her body moved on its own.
Dark blood, fresher than what Lee stained her clothes with back at the hotel. Rancid, cold, thick. Splattered against her skin with every strike.
The walker lay still.
The smell foggy in her lungs.
She had the keys and the gun.
All she had left was the door.
“Hey,” his voice whispered to her. “C’mere.”
She knelt down beside him, and when she wouldn’t look at him, he knocked his knee against hers to get her attention. “You're strong, Clem. You...you can do anything.”
“But... I'm little.”
“Doesn't mean nothin'. You're going to see bad stuff, but it's okay.”
Everyone in their group, the St. John’s farm, Duck- why did she call him a baby? Her parents- mom and dad husks of who they used to be.
Lee fading away in front of her.
“My parents…” More tears. A burning in her throat. “It's so horrible.”
“Oh, I-I can't imagine, sweet pea.”
“And now you?” Now him. Chuck was right. “Please...please don't be one of them. Please don't become a walker.”
“There's only one thing you can do. You know that.”
The train. Screeching wheels. Katjaa, Duck laying beside her, a finger pressed to her temple- “It’s here, or nothing.”
Gun heavy in her hand, a twinge of pain in her wrist.
“...I-I don't know if I can.”
She can’t. She couldn’t. Not her. How could she?
He watched her, knitted brows pulled together in thought.
Quietly, Lee spoke, “You can leave me.”
“What?”
“Just leave… It's okay.”
Leave? But then-
“You'll be just like them.”
“It's okay,” he smiled. “It won't be me.”
Before she could protest further, he told her it’s time to go.
“You can come with me.”
“No, honey, I can't. It's okay.”
“Please?”
“You have to go.”
She couldn’t leave him. Lee would be another walker, just like her parents. Milky eyes, growling, hungry. She didn’t want that. Not for Lee. He couldn’t. Not a walker.
But it’s either that, or…
“Maybe... maybe... I shouldn't let you turn.”
“I don't want you to have to do that.”
“I can… I can do it.”
She could do it. She could shoot him. She shot the bottles, she shot walkers, she saved him before. She could… she could-
Lee inhaled deep and suppressed a cough.
“Shooting people… it changes you, sweetie,” he said. “I don't want you to get used to it…. Pulling the trigger of a gun and ending a life, Clem...you feel yourself lose something every time.”
She’s lost everything.
“It’s… The first time, the most. Don't do it unless you absolutely have to…You have to be careful about that. It'll consume you.”
This is wrong.
“Lee…”
“I don’t want your last memory of me to be that, Clem-” he choked, body trembling. “Not unless you have to…” More coughing.
His eyes are still his, but they’re fading.
She tightened her grip on the gun.
She can’t.
“….Okay,” she finally said. Tears slipped through the blood and dripped down her chin. “I’ll go. I’ll leave you. I’ll go as fast as I can.”
A sigh escaped Lee’s lips, and twitched into a genuine grin. Relief. Content….
“And as safe as you can. Always be safe… This way, you can just remember me talkin' to you and sayin' goodbye. Nothing else. And…. hey, when you try to find a group of good people. Look for someone like Katjaa with them. You know what I mean?”
Sweet, warm, a gentle touch.
“Someone nice…”
“Someone nice,” Lee echoed. “Who cares about people, wants to help others…That's how you'll know. If you don't see anyone like that, run. And…. and always keep moving… keep moving forward. You're gonna want to find someplace like the motor inn, but that's just not safe.”
“Why not?”
“Those places are just targets. Move. As much as you can. You and your people… Move...”
Never let yourself get trapped. Look for people like Katjaa. Keep moving forward. Always aim for the head, unless it’s a person. Always be safe. You’re smarter than any of them. Keep moving forward- all of it a mess in her head, aching in her temple.
“Clem?”
“Yeah?”
“Don’t be afraid. You’ll be okay.”
Don’t be afraid. Keep moving forward.
“I’ll miss you…”
Clementine placed her hand in his.
“Me, too.”
Keep moving forward.
She left his side with nothing but a gun in her hand.
The door unlocked. She didn’t leave.
He wasn’t watching her anymore.
“Don’t go…” a plead barely above a whisper. “Please…”
No response.
Keep moving forward.
Clementine did as he asked, and left him.

Neighborly
I had a bad case of writers block and rabbit brain trying to work on my wips yesterday, so I went and dug through my prompt lists, sat down with the sprint timer, and scrawled out this little bit of nonsense. I'm not sure about the final result but it broke the block, and I figured I might as well share it, so I hope you enjoy!
AO3
Rating: T
Marinette's been crushing on her cute neighbor for weeks, but she's never gotten the courage to speak more than a few flustered words to him. Now it might be too late--he's at her door begging for the use of her shower to get ready for his big date.
Marinette stared at the man standing at her door.
“I’m sorry?” she said faintly, and the man smiled at her. That didn’t help the situation at all, as it made her knees wobbly.
“Weird ask, I know,” he said, ruffling a hand through his blue-tinted hair. “It’s just that I’m supposed to have a date tonight and my shower’s been out for two days. Maintenance has quit answering my calls and I’m getting desperate. I really like this girl and I don’t want to give the wrong impression.”
“Oh,” Marinette said, voice still weak, and then she plastered a plastic smile on her face. “O-of course you can! What are neighbors for, right? Um—”
“Luka,” he supplied, still smiling. Marinette already knew that, of course. She knew an embarrassing amount of information about this man, considering they had only spoken in passing. The first time, he’d caught her when her shoe had broken in the hallway, and she’d pitched straight into him somehow managing to stop her fall and haul her back upright against him with only one strong arm. He hadn’t even lost the groceries he’d been carrying in the other. He’d smiled at her and told her to be careful with that soft velvet voice and she’d looked up into blue eyes that seemed far too gentle for his handsome, angular face and—
Marinette suddenly realized it was her turn to talk and that she was taking too long. “Um M-Marinette, I’m. I’m Marinette,” she stammered.
“Nice to finally officially meet you Marinette,” Luka said easily, as if she wasn’t the most awkward person he’d ever spoken to, as if she hadn’t run away from him after a few awkward words every time they’d bumped into each other—literally or otherwise. “If it’s okay with you, I’ll pop back over and grab my things, and be back in a few minutes?”
“Oh, um. Y-yeah, yeah, of course,” she babbled, and he turned away, raising a hand slightly.
“Great, I’ll be back in a few then.”
Marinette shut the door numbly, and then walked over to her couch and buried her face in a pillow. She screamed, kicking her feet, and then tossed the pillow away, moaning as she dragged her hands down her face.
It wasn’t enough that the super hot musician with gorgeous shoulders and dreamy eyes was coming over to use her shower. He had to need her shower because he had a date . Marinette wanted to be his date! She’d been half-stalking him trying to work up the courage—well. Not really stalking him, just...observing. She just noticed things, that was all, like how he had a smile and a question for everybody, the way he fed the stray cats that lived behind the building, and always held open doors no matter who was behind him, and how hard his chest was beneath the baggy layers he wore, and—oh, that chest was going to be in her bathroom and—her bathroom!
Marinette’s eyes flew wide and she nearly tripped over her own feet, flinging herself off the couch, running to the bathroom to grab anything too girly or potentially embarrassing and shove it under the sink. Fortunately her bathroom wasn’t dirty (she wasn’t an animal after all), just cluttered, and she frantically grabbed the underthings she’d draped over the shower rod to dry and ran them to her room, shoving them frantically under her pillow before going back to make absolutely sure she hadn’t missed any or left anything embarrassing. She put a clean towel on the rack and threw the dirty one over her arm and triple-checked to make sure there was no hair in the shower drain. She heard the knock on the door and jerked up, banging her head on the faucet of the tub. She yelped, dizzy with the pain for a moment.
“Marinette?” Luka called, as she tried to extract herself from the bathtub with one hand clutched to her scalp. She couldn’t help the whimper that escaped her; that hurt.
“Are you all right?” Luka asked, and Marinette whirled around wide-eyed to find him standing in the bathroom doorway. “I heard you yell and I let myself in, I hope that’s okay. Did you hurt yourself? Are you bleeding?” He dropped the backpack slung over his shoulder onto the floor and came over to her, gently tugging her hand away from her head.
“I don’t think so,” Marinette gritted. “I was just...trying to clean up a bit, and…” She gestured at the faucet and Luka winced in sympathy.
“Ouch,” he muttered as he parted her hair with gentle fingers. He was so nice, Marinette mourned. Although...he did smell like he needed that shower. She held her breath and tried not to make a face. “It looks okay,” he said, stepping back away from her. “You didn’t have to clean for me.”
Marinette gave an embarrassed shrug. “Wouldn’t you?” she asked dryly, and blushed when Luka laughed.
“Probably,” he conceded with a grin. “Thanks. I really didn’t mean to put you to inconvenience.”
“It’s no big deal,” Marinette said, finally mustering a smile. “Besides, how could I leave you in the lurch? Big date and all. I don’t need any more bad karma on my dating life.”
Luka’s eyebrows rose, and Marinette flushed, cursing her stupid mouth that never shut up when it should. “So I’ll, um—” she gestured behind Luka to the door, “get out of here, so you can. You know.”
“Oh, sorry.” Luka moved out of her way, pressing himself against the sink, and Marinette squeezed past him and out of the door. “Thanks again, I really appreciate it.”
“This girl must be something special,” Marinette smiled as she backed into the small hallway. “For you to go to all this trouble instead of rescheduling.”
“She is,” Luka grinned. “She’s amazing. I think so, anyway. I don’t know her very well yet, but she’s awfully sweet and super cute.” The grin on his face turned a little goofy. “I’ve been smitten since I met her, honestly.”
“Oh,” Marinette kept her smile in place, trying to ignore the cold feeling in her stomach. “Oh, that’s really sweet. Um, well I don’t want to make you late, so I’ll just...music! I’ll go turn on some music.” That way she wouldn’t hear the incredibly cute soon-to-be-naked boy in her bathroom. “Um, take your time, let me know if you need anything.”
Luka’s grin widened a little. “Thanks Marinette.” He shut the door, and Marinette marched herself back to the living room to scream into another pillow.
After a few deep breaths and a lot of nervous fumbling, she got her music player running. Jagged Stone should be enough, right? Loud enough to cover—she heard the curtain rings slide across the rod. The shower started running and Luka’s deep sigh of relief. Poor guy , she thought, he must have been miserable . She put the music player on and sat for a moment, chewing her thumbnail nervously.
After a few minutes she sat up straighter, listening. Was that—over the sound of the running water and Jagged Stone wailing through her sound system, she heard another voice. Luka was...singing? He was singing along with the song that was playing. Marinette giggled, and moved to the other end of the couch, listening. He had a nice voice, she thought wistfully. She’d seen him with a guitar on his back in the halls. She wondered if some of the music she occasionally heard through his door in the hall was music he made, rather than the radio as she’d assumed.
She flopped on the arm of the couch and groaned. He was so cool, and she was such a disaster. She would have never been brave enough to ask to use a stranger’s shower, no matter how miserable and disgusting she was.
Poor guy , she thought again. He must have been really desperate.
She sat up, and picked up her phone, looking at it in her hands. Maybe she could...well, it might be stupid but it couldn’t hurt to just ask, right?
Marinette dialed the building maintenance number. “Hi Pierre,” she chirped brightly when the grumpy old technician picked up the phone. “It’s Marinette in 34 B? How are you doing?
“Miss Marinette!” The gruff tone softened. “I’m doing well, doing well. Tickets lined up like crazy, though. Everything seems to be breaking at once these days.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that,” Marinette said, putting on a tone of great sympathy. “Maybe I shouldn’t bother you then—”
“Now, now, none of that. What can I do for you?”
“It’s not actually me,” Marinette said, “It’s my neighbor across the hall, Luka? His shower’s been out for a while now and he came over tonight to see if he could use mine—”
“What?” barked old Pierre, and Marinette grinned to herself. “That punk with the piercings? You shouldn’t be letting him traipse through your apartment Miss Marinette. Guys like that always try to take advantage.”
“Oh, I’m sure he wouldn’t do that,” Marinette said innocently. “I’m sure he wouldn’t do anything like that. I was calling to see when his shower might be fixed, but if you’re so busy, maybe I should just give him my spare key so he can—”
“No, no,” Pierre said quickly. “I’ve got his ticket right here, see, he was next on the list. His shower will be fixed tomorrow, so don’t be making any foolish offers Miss Marinette. You’re too nice for your own good, you know.”
“Oh, it never hurts to be nice, Pierre,” Marinette giggled. “I’m planning on making some chocolate chip scones tomorrow to take to a friend, so if you do come to fix Luka’s shower, stop on by, I’ll save a few of them for you.”
“Well, I’ll stop by if I have time,” Pierre said gruffly. “Not that sweets are much to a man my age, but if you made them…”
“Great, I hope I’ll see you!” Marinette giggled. “Thanks so much Pierre, you’re an angel.” She hung up, grinning to herself.
“I can’t believe it. You’re magic.”
Marinette jumped half out of her skin and whirled around. Luka grinned at her sheepishly, but she hardly noticed, because while he was wearing pants—a different, more fitted pair than what he’d had on when he arrived—his torso was bare, and her fluffy pink towel hung around his shoulders, catching only most of the drips falling from his blue hair. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you, and I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop. I just wanted to ask if you had a hair dryer I can borrow. I forgot to grab mine.”
“Oh, um, sure,” Marinette said, jumping up. “I’ll just...I’ll get it, if that’s okay.” She blushed, thinking of all the things she had shoved in the cabinet before he came.
“Sure.” Luka moved back out of her way, and she shimmied past him into the bathroom. She blinked a moment at the amount of paraphernalia spread on her counter. She’d never thought guys used that much product, but she shook herself and bent over to dig in the cabinet, trying to block it with her body so Luka couldn’t see inside. It took some effort to find the hair dryer, which had been shoved against the back of the cabinet in her frenzied tidying, but by some miracle she extracted it without dumping all of the piled up junk onto the floor. Sighing in relief, she straightened and turned. “Got it!”
Luka was looking at the ceiling. His darkly tanned skin was flushed from the hot shower and the line of his neck made her swallow. “Luka?” she repeated, trying not to squeak.
His dropped his gaze back to her, and she froze under the intensity in that look for a moment. Then he blinked and smiled, softening, and Marinette felt she could move again. She offered him the hair dryer and he took it. “Thanks, Marinette,” he said. “And thanks for getting Pierre’s ass in gear. He hates me, so I figured it’d be a week at least before I could get him to come out.”
“Oh, that.” Marinette shrugged, and grinned mischievously. “I have a lot of experience dealing with grouchy old men.” She winked, and to her mild surprise, the color in Luka’s cheeks deepened. He cleared his throat.
“Well, thanks for making the effort, I really appreciate it.”
“Why does he hate you?” Marinette frowned, as Luka’s words caught up to her.
Luka nodded vaguely in the direction of the back of the building. “We got into it over me feeding the strays. He was nattering on about disease and just breeding more and blah, blah, blah.” Luka rolled his eyes. “If he’d actually listen for five minutes...anyway, I have a friend, the blond that was with me that one time, you remember? He runs a trap-and-release program for feral cats, gets them vaccinated and fixed and all that and then lets them back out into their home territory. The cats behind our building are probably as safe as your average indoor cat, in terms of disease.”
“Oh,” Marinette gasped, awed. “That’s really cool.”
Luka grinned. “He’s pretty passionate about it. He did all the real work, trapping and transport and all that. I just make sure they have a good meal. May I?” He gestured towards the sink, and Marinette jumped.
“Oh, of course, please. I’m sorry, I’m going to make you late with all this chattering—” Marinette babbled as she and Luka did a slightly awkward dance to let him in and her out of the bathroom. He smelled much better now, she noticed giddily as they had to squeeze together. She only barely managed not to squeal when he took her arm lightly to guide her around him.
“By the way,” he called once she was out, and she glanced back to see him unscrewing the lid on one of the sink jars. “Do you have any suggestions for good places to eat close by?” He looked over his shoulder at her and grinned. “I’m always looking to try new things.”
“U-um—” Finding it hard to think while staring at his bare back, Marinette turned away and tapped a finger to her lips in thought. “What kind of food do you like?”
“Anything,” Luka replied, running fingers coated in some kind of gel through his hair. “I like all kinds of things.”
“What does she like?”
“I don’t know yet,” Luka admitted.
Marinette considered. “Well, my favorite is this Italian place about two blocks down, but Italian is chancy on a first date. Messy, you know. She might not be comfortable.” Marinette raised her voice as Luka turned on the hair dryer. “There’s an Indian place that’s a little farther away, and there’s a really cute little patisserie right next to it, that could be romantic. Oh, and there’s a park right there, if you feel like a nighttime stroll.” She frowned. “You didn’t already figure this stuff out?”
“I’m not really a planner,” Luka laughed, his deep voice carrying easily even over the noise of the dryer. “I had some ideas, but sometimes the universe throws you an Indian place and a cute patisserie, with a moonlight stroll in the bargain.” He winked at Marinette. “It pays to keep an open mind.”
Marinette started to smile, and then remembered she was helping him plan a date with someone else, and turned away again. “Okay, well, you’ll have to let me know how it goes,” she said quickly as she went down the hallway. Her eyes were stinging and she took a deep breath as she blinked. Stupid , she scolded herself. She didn’t even know him, because just like always she’d never found the guts to actually talk to him, besides a hello and good night! and one very rushed um, cat food was on sale and I noticed it was the brand you buy so...here! SEEYOULATERBYE! He was her neighbor and she hadn’t even asked his name before today, only seen it on the mail that had been misdelivered to her box instead of his. All she had was little stolen scraps, because she hadn’t been brave enough to ask for more.
Ugh she was such a loser, it was no wonder Luka had never even—well, he had said a word to her, actually. Words like Are you all right? and Can I help you with that? and Wow, thanks, that’s so cool of you . Because he was sweet and nice as well as good looking, and if she’d had any guts at all maybe she could have—
“Marinette?”
She whirled, and Luka was standing there, his bag at his feet, closing the last two buttons of a black dress shirt. “Are you all right?” he asked as he began rolling the sleeves up to bare his forearms. “I hope I didn’t make you uncomfortable.”
“What? No, of course not.” Marinette clamped her teeth down on her tongue before she could blurt something like I have shirtless men in my home all the time . Luka was looking at her with a slightly furrowed brow.
“I’m sorry,” he said softly. “I should have gone back to my place to finish up, I wasn’t—I mean I didn’t mean to impose or anything.”
Marinette took a deep breath and let it out slowly, and then gave him a genuine smile. “You didn’t. Really, Luka, I wasn’t bothered. I just, um. I got emotional about something for a moment there, but it wasn’t your fault.”
Luka nodded. “Something about bad dating karma?” he guessed, voice so gentle it made her ache.
“More or less.” Marinette tried to smile.
“Well,” Luka sighed, finishing the second sleeve. “Honestly I haven’t been too lucky in that department myself. I was hoping tonight would change that, but...maybe...maybe it isn’t the best time after all.”
“What?” Marinette cried, staring at him. “Why? Luka, you seemed like you liked this girl so much, and you’re all dressed up.” She stepped to him and adjusted the set of his collar without thinking. “You look so good, it’ll be great. She won’t be able to resist you. Believe me, I know it’s scary to put yourself out there, but won’t you regret it if you don’t?” I do .
Luka caught her wrists gently. “Yeah, I really think I would.” He grinned. “Now I just need to ask her.”
Marinette blinked up at him. “You didn’t ask her?” she asked, bewildered. “Isn’t it going to be kind of short notice?” She frowned. “You said you had a date tonight.”
Luka dipped his head in a kinda-sorta motion. “I said I was supposed to have a date tonight,” he chuckled. “And I would have—or at least I hope so—if I’d asked you out two days ago when I planned. But then I got home from work and of course I was sweaty and gross and then my shower wouldn’t work, and I couldn’t talk to you while I was disgusting. Not when you’re always so pretty and neat and put together.”
Marinette’s cheeks flushed.
“And then Pierre didn’t show and he didn’t show and he didn’t show,” Luka rolled his eyes. “And if I didn’t ask you out today, I’d owe my buddy that runs the cat rescue my favorite signed Jagged Stone album. He’s been bugging me about asking you out for like a month.” He grinned. “Ever since you brought me the cat food? He could see how much I liked you and he decided then and there we were meant to be, and somehow I let him talk me into this stupid—bet or dare or whatever, that if I didn’t man up by today...well. I would’ve asked you anyway one way or another.”
Marinette’s mouth dropped open, and she was sure her face must be on fire.
“So, now that I’m presentable,” Luka grinned slowly. “Will you go out to dinner with me tonight? I heard about this really good Indian place. Maybe afterwards we could grab dessert and take a walk in the park? I’d really like to get to know you better.”
Marinette gasped, and then her lips pursed into a pout. Luka laughed. “You’re mean,” she told him, kicking his shin lightly.
Luka’s shoulders hunched a little, and he looked guilty. “I didn’t mean to be. I’m sorry for teasing.” He blushed. “I guess I was nerving myself up a bit, telling you how much I liked you without you knowing, but I didn’t think about how it would come across. I didn’t mean to upset you. No pressure, okay?” He slid his hands from her wrists to her hands and lowered them between them. “If you don’t want to, no hard feelings. Just, like you said. I’d regret it if I didn’t try.”
“But—” Marinette let go of his hands as her own flew to her hair. “I’m not dressed for a date!”
Luka chuckled. “You look gorgeous to me. But I can wait if you want to change.”
Marinette reddened. “I—w-well, I mean...I mean I guess we could—” Luka laid a finger on her lips.
“Breathe,” he told her, clearly trying not to laugh. “You’re really cute, you know that?”
That didn’t help her efforts to calm down, but she did manage to breathe, despite the very distracting slide of his finger as it left her lips. “Fine,” she said finally. “But you better be prepared because I’m going all out for our second date.”
Luka’s grin went wide and bright and more than a little silly. “I can’t wait.”
ETA:  Okay, yes, I know this was a bit mean for Marinette. I did actually really waffle about it while I was writing it and I almost scrapped it a couple times, but the whole point of the timer is to keep me on task and stop the second guessing and overthinking that was sabotaging me, so I ran with it. I did ultimately decide to keep it because really, they haven't had a chance to really talk or anything here, and so Luka doesn't really know that Marinette's into him. He's aware there's some attraction between them, but he doesn't know how hard she's crushing. So really, he's just a bit insecure himself and psyching himself up a bit for The Moment. So I justify it to myself anyway. As soon as he's able to actually take in her mood he's aware he's messed up. If you can't forgive him, that's okay. Mari will get him back later.

“Scattering sparks of thought energy
Deliver me and carry me away”

I order you to cower and præy”

 ---
Sometimes it was nice to just lay down in the park and watch the clouds float overhead.
He often had a lot of energy, both normal and... well... unnatural, but sometimes it was nice to relax, especially when he didn't feel like himself. His energy was ebbing, and there was something… something...
"Can you tell us another?"
He glanced up. Several of his usual playmates were standing around him, their faces lit up in interest. He grinned a wide, toothy grin.
"The boy babbled blatantly but was blessed with a brilliant brain!"
"Good!"
The compliment made his brow furrow. Normally they might cheer "cool!" or "awesome!" but he shrugged—he'd take it. It gave him a warm feeling inside, unlike the frequent chill of his own home. Plus, he couldn’t help but light up as he watched the smiles on his friends’ faces—some of them were still losing baby teeth, he noted, and the progression was fascinating. He knew what he could do to see more of those grins, too...
Without raising his head too much—it hurt a little, and he could see well enough from where he was—he glanced around to make sure his mother wasn't too close by. Luckily she was way off in the pavilion, talking to several other adults. Good; she wouldn't see, and neither would the other prying parents.
"How about this?" he asked, and with a tiny bit of concentration lifted a few rocks off the ground, spinning them in circles. Instead of cheering, however, the children backed away, their smiles fading.
"Look, he's trying to—!" one girl whispered frantically.
"Don't worry, he's fine for now."
He frowned, dropping the rocks. "O-oh, I'm sorry! I didn't think they would see..."
"That's okay. Can you tell us another?"
"Disappointed dogs don't do dangerous deeds." Wincing, he closed his eyes—there was a breeze that seemed to pass over his head only, running through his hair.
His scalp felt cold.
---
"Go on, Caligosto. Show the doctor how you can pick it up."
"Like this...?"
"No, the other way."
"But... mother doesn't like it when I do it that way."
"Do as you're told, Caligosto."
"...Okay..."
The fish swam all about the pond, but came closer to the surface when they realized he was watching from his usual spot on the shore. As they nearned him, he settled over the grass, staring down at his scaly friends. The fish seemed to like his company, and they wouldn't snitch to his parents if he did anything they wouldn't like.
On top of that, he felt a connection with them, almost like the sort of connection he could feel with people. They couldn't talk, and they didn't have facial expressions… but he could almost read them somehow, more and more as he continued visiting. Now he could sense what foods they wanted, or when they were scared of a nearby predator. It was nice to help them out.
It was also interesting to see the different kinds of teeth the fish had—some had sharp fangs, some had tiny flat teeth, and some had teeth in weird places, like their tongue or throat!
"Can you hear us?"
He would have jumped, but that would have scared the fish. As it was, he leaned forward, his eyes wide beneath their glasses. "Yes! I can hear you!" He could hardly contain his excitement. "I'd always thought I could hear you before, but never this clear! Do you think—"
"Good! Can you tell us another?"
He blinked. "Another what?"
"Another phrase."
Oh, right. In his excitement he'd nearly forgotten that he'd occasionally show off for the fish as well, though he'd never been sure if they could understand. "Friendly fish flip-flop fast when facing fearsome foes!"
"Very good!"
Giggling, he settled himself back down on the soft grass. "I'm glad you think so... my parents always tell me to be quiet."
Apparently, the fish had nothing to say to this, for they remained quiet, swimming just under the surface and watching him. So he kept watching them too, observing the light that reflected off their scales. But one creature caught his eye: a small turtle swimming in place. It was odd to see to begin with, but the paddling of its little feet seemed strangely frantic, its front legs moving in big sweeping arcs. It didn't speak, but he swore he could hear it—
Away, away—
---
"Is that... all he's capable of?"
"I'm afraid not."
"D—Father, are we done? I don't like it here..."
"Only speak when spoken to, Caligosto."
"Can we see anything else?"
"Yes."
"I-I don't want to—"
"Caligosto."
"Okay, okay! Let me—"
---
The seas were calm, and he had worked hard today as a navigator (or was he first mate? he couldn't quite remember, but that was okay), keeping a close eye on the compass and making sure they were staying on course. They were nearing the shore, but for now, he was taking a break, resting against a coil of rope with his eyes closed, enjoying the smell of the ocean air and the feeling of sunshine.
And also trying to forget his headache—he was pretty sure he bumped his head coming down from the crow's nest.
"You're doin' good today, mate! Squawk!"
He opened one eye, noting the parrot sitting just behind him. "Thanks, Crackers!"
Birds hadn’t been something that interested him too much at first; what kind of silly animal didn’t have teeth? That is, until he’d learned that birds have a weird organ that acted as their teeth. Fascinating!
The parrot cocked her head at him. "Do you know any more?"
Oh right, of course the parrot enjoyed those phrases. "The pretty parrot perched upon the putrid pirate's peacoat!"
Crackers gave a pleased chirp, ruffling her feathers.
Wincing, he found his headache was starting to get worse, like a bad toothache, and closed his eyes again. "Do you think we'll reach shore soon?"
We won't if you don't get out.
He opened his eyes. Crackers was gone.
---
"STOP! STOP! MAKE IT STOP!"
"What are you doing?!"
"I-I just did what you asked—"
"I didn't tell you to—!"
"I'm sorry!"
"Put him out, hurry—"
"We've seen enough, doctor. We'll schedule an appointment for your son next week."
"N-next week?!"
"Very well. He'll be there promptly."
---
The kids’ expressions had changed from bright smiles to tightly-drawn lips and wide eyes, and it made him shudder. "Is something wrong?" he asked.
"No, it's fine. Tell us another."
"The store..." He paused, concentrating. Strange, he didn't usually have trouble remembering these things, but it must have just been his headache. "The store clerk stood and... stared at me in stupor."
"I would too after what I've seen," one kid muttered, only to be shushed by another.
His heart gave a pained jolt. "Wh-what?"
"Nothing!"
He didn't like the way they were talking—it reminded him of... something else. Someone else. Another child stepped closer to him, looking down at him with a furrowed brow and frightened eyes. He felt the sudden urge to scoot away.
You're in danger.
---
"Wh...where am I supposed to go?"
"Just in through these doors."
"Okay... Why do I have to come back here to the doctor, though? I feel fine."
"Nevermind that. Do you remember what your father told you to do?"
"Yeah! The fun phrases. I know a million of those!"
"Good."
"Would you like to hear... w-wait, who are all these people watching? Wh... what are those?"
---
The fish were swimming in circles and starting to make him dizzy. He rested his head down in the cool grass, but it did little to help. "Oh... sorry. I'm not feeling so good. I should be going home..."
"You can go home soon. Tell us another first."
"Ugh... My mom... m-my... mother makes a... marvelous... meat... mincemeat pie." Recalling these phrases was starting to feel like what he imagined pulling teeth felt like, but a lot less fun. Was his mother missing him now? How long had he been gone? "I... really need to go home now."
"No you don't."
His eyes shot open, and he shivered as he stared down at the fish. "Wh... what did you... say?"
"Don't try to move. You'll be all right."
All of the fish watched him eagerly... but the turtle was still waving its front feet even more frantically.
---
"Don't worry about that."
"N-no! I know what those tools are—I've read my dad's books. You're gonna hurt me!"
"Nonsense. Just lay on the bed and you'll be fine."
"No, I don't want to! You can't make me!"
---
The ship heaved up and down with the swell of the waves. His insides rolled with it, and he remained lying on the coil of rope, waiting for his stomach to stop lurching and his head to stop aching.
"You stopped. Keep going."
"Ugh... The newt... nuzzled in a... n-narrow... nook."
"Good."
"No, it's not, Crackers! I don't feel good..."
"You're fine, squawk! Try to distract yourself."
"Okay..." Opening one eye, he raised a shaky hand, lifting the end of the rope and making it snake through the air, though it shuddered all the while. It was a lot more difficult than usual... Normally he could lift several objects at once, and delighted the crew by juggling them. He felt like he should be able to do other things too, but what?
---
"Oh mercy! He's going to kill someone!"
"Caligosto, if you don't stop this at once, I will call your father!"
"So call him! I want him here! Why didn't he come with me?!"
"Oh no, he's trying to light the chair on fire—"
"Go get the earmuffs, now."
"MOM! DAD! WHERE ARE YOU?!"
"GET THEM NOW!"
---
The sun was covered in clouds, and the humid air brought a promise of rain. Why were the other kids still here? Surely their parents would have called them home by now. He wished they would. Surely his mom would have called him, too, wouldn't she?
"Tell us another," one girl asked urgently, taking a hesitant step forward.
His head was swimming. "I-I don't wanna..."
"Tell us now."
Focusing, he managed to force his mind to concentrate. "She sniffed... and s-smelled... the stirring storm."
"Good, tell us another," one fish bubbled from the water.
A sharp pain like a broken tooth filled his skull, his insides felt sick, and the rain was beginning to fall. "I... I can't..."
"Tell us, Caligosto."
"B... Bernie read a book... b-by the... ba—babbling brook." He wanted to wipe the rain from his face, but he felt too exhausted to move his arms. "C-can I go... home..."
"Squawk! We're not to shore yet. Give me another."
He stared up at the blurred vision of the bird. "Why...?"
"Do as you're told."
"Th-the... hummingbirds... hovered... a-and hummed in... heavenly..." His voice broke off into a choked sob. "I wanna... no... I wanna... go home..."
"Caligosto?"
---
"I WANT TO GO HOME!"
"Get it on him, get it on—"
"GET AWAY FROM ME!"
"Where did he go?!"
"The monster's turned invisible!"
"I WANNA GO HOME!"
"There! Put it on right—there!"
"STOP, I WANNA—"
---
"...go home!"
He blinked.
"You are home, Cali," his mother said, beaming down at him with a wide, pearly-white grin.
"I am?" Blinking again, he looked around. Indeed, he was in front of his house, with his parents both standing on the front porch, as they had been when he'd left. On top of that, his head didn't hurt and he didn't feel sick. "I... I am!"
"You're all done with the doctors now," his father said, smiling. "We're so proud of you!"
"You... you are?" He stared open-mouthed; his father had never told him that before. "I'm all done?"
"Yes you are, dear." His mother knelt down, but he didn't come closer—something was making his hair stand on end. "Almost."
His stomach twisted.
"Just tell us another, son."
"N... no..."
The smile on his father's face faded. "Do as you're told, Caligosto."
"N-no... no, no..." He tried to shake his head, but couldn't. "I... I want to go home..."
The pain was coming back, spiking through his head, and he cried out.
"We're going to lose him—"
"No, just a little more."
"No," he sobbed. "No, no! Mom! Dad!"
The park was flooding. The fish were swirling around his head. Waves crashed over the boat.
He had to do something. Anything.
Focusing with everything he had left, he tried to think, tried to move something, tried to make something burn, tried to call for help—
Did—did you hear that?
Cali?
The agony peaked, and his vision turned orange.
---
"Ooooh... ugh..."
"Is this safe?"
"It's safe for us. The psilirium will keep him under control during the procedure."
"But can he still hear us?"
"Son, can you tell us one of your funny phrases?"
"Sure... grass grows greener in the graveyard."
"You see? He'll be fine."
---
There was no park.
There was no pond.
There was no ocean.
There were several doctors staring down at him, a great many more people seated in the theater behind them, and an empty feeling within him.
Something was gone. Something important.
"How do you feel, Caligosto?"
His brain was slow to work, and he could not form the words, but if he could have, he would have answered:
Like... a cavity.

It was the beginning of June, weeks away from O.W.L.S, which meant weeks away from another ending of a school year at Hogwarts. What bothered you the most wasn’t the fact that you had homework piled up to the ceilings, or that Snape has been snapping at you all week and took away 5 house points from you, or that you were drowning in a sea of textbooks and notes that you kept studying for your upcoming exams; it was the fact that you had barely seen Draco in nearly two weeks. You were so busy with schoolwork and focused on getting outstanding marks, you hadn’t even realized you were neglecting your own boyfriend.
Of course, the two of you would find each other in the Great Hall during breakfast and you’d give him a quick hello and goodbye kiss faster than he could even register what was happening and by the time he did, you were already out the door and rushing towards your first class. At this point, you were acting like the white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, always frantic and in a rush. Your hair was wild and untamed, you had dark bags under your eyes from the all-nighters you were pulling, your robes and clothes underneath were in disarray and wrinkled.
To make it worse, you never let Draco study with you. He constantly asked and you always gave him the same answer.
“If I study with you, I’ll never get anything done.”
Which was true. He was very distracting with his quiet jokes in the library, or when he would look up at you with his sparkling gray eyes when you would try to ask him a question that just flew from your mind at the sight, or smile at you with a wide toothy grin that lit up the room when you got sidetracked and talked to him, or the way he rested his hand on your thigh when he would sit beside you while you quietly read or wrote but the only thing you could focus on was his fiery touch. Really, it wasn’t him who would distract you; it was you who distracted yourself with him. And that was evident when you tried to remember everything you’ve learned in the past school term and came up blank because for some reason your brain only retained information and memories that contained Draco throughout the past year.
So you figured a little time away from him wouldn’t hurt. Because if you didn’t pass these O.W.L.S, you felt like everyone would be disappointed in you, especially yourself. So you locked yourself away in your dorm and crammed and jam-packed your brain with information until you eventually passed out hunched over a book with drool blurring the ink on your pages. You avoided the library for studying, knowing Draco would go looking for you or Madam Pince would distract you halfway through your note taking to kick you out for the night.
Mornings always came the same, you waking up randomly over your desk a few minutes before breakfast and changing into a new pair of robes as quickly as you could while trying your best to smooth your hair down with your hands. This morning was different, however. You woke up to one of your roommates shaking you violently while she spoke your name loudly above you, but it sounded distant. You shot up in a hot flash, wiping your mouth of any saliva and groaning when you started to feel the pounding in your head that seemed to shake up your whole brain. “Thank Merlin, you’re awake!” Your roommate exclaimed in relief. “You looked dead, honestly. But class is starting in twenty and you’ve missed breakfast.”
“Twenty?” you frown, letting your swelling head fall into your hands. “I don’t want to deal with Snape right now, I feel awful.”
“I’m going to try to say this as nice as possible,” she sighs, placing a hand on your shoulder, “but it shows.”
“Thanks,” you scowl. You try to get up from your chair but gasp in pain as your muscles cramp at the movement like a rickety old man.
“Maybe you should go to Madam Pomfrey,” she suggests, trying to help you up but you shoo her.
“No, I’m fine,” you rush to interject. “I will not be missing Potions, no.”
She gave you a shrug, backing away in defeat as she let you rush to change into new robes and attempt to brush down the matted mess that’s supposed to be your hair but gave up halfway through and threw it into an updo. The headache was not a good combination with the scalp pain from combing out knots. Your roommate waited for you with pitied eyes, following closely behind you as you hurried out of the room and towards the exit.
You sped walked out with her but didn’t see the mop of platinum blond that was waiting for you outside the entrance of the common room. You had zero awareness of his presence until his hand had reached out to hold onto your wrist, stopping your near sprint towards the class. Your roommate stopped too, eyeing the two of you and the look on the Slytherin’s face before she continued walking.
“What? Draco, let go,” you move away from him and he quickly drops your arm. “I’m going to be late.”
You began to walk away from him, but he stepped in front of you, stopping you again.
“Why weren’t you at breakfast?”
“I overslept,” you answered gruffly. “Now, move! If I’m late, Snape will have my head on a stick.”
“Y/N, you need to slow down,” he frowns, “all this studying and rushing around everywhere is going to land you in the hospital wing. You look sick already, I’m worried.”
“I’m not sick!” You huff, throwing your head back in irritation. “If you really cared about me, you’d let me go to class instead of insulting me.”
“I’m not insulting you. Am I so terrible to tell you that you look like you’re about to pass out any second?”
“Yes, you are terrible,” you sneer, the pounding in your head was getting stronger each passing second. “Instead of-”
Your train of thought was violently stopped in its angry tracks, you stumble back and begin blinking hard at the spots that quickly started to dot your vision. Your hand instinctively reached out towards Draco, which he grabbed and hurriedly darted forward towards you, gripping onto you before you could meet the ground, your vision going black and your consciousness out the door.
Draco felt himself begin to panic. He promptly began to feel guilty, feeling like it was his fault that you even fainted in the first place because of the argument he had accidentally started.
He gathered you up in his arms, one arm sliding under your knees and the other under your neck as he swiftly picked you up and began his frantic journey towards the hospital wing.
When he got you to Madam Pomfrey, she instructed him to set you down on one of the beds and kicked him out of the room while she started her treatment. His heart was beating so fast, he wanted nothing more than to stay by your side so he halfheartedly threatened her with his father and she ended up letting him stay with a deep sigh while he stood idly by your bed. When Madam Pomfrey was done, she left the two of you alone. Draco wasted no time in sitting at the foot of your bed, his hand finding its way into your cold one that laid limply beside you. He watched your sleeping figure with a relief as he noticed that whatever Pomfrey gave you had speedily began to affect you. Your skin no longer looked ghastly and dull, but healthy again and tinged with pink. The dark circles underneath your eyes had faded just a little bit, leaving only slight bags as you finally slept.
He waited maybe 12 hours for you to wake up. After missing his first class, he had decided to go to the rest of his classes as Madam Pomfrey swore to him up and down that you would not wake up any earlier. He begrudgingly obliged and skipped all his meals instead to spend his short free time with you. When his final class ended, he almost ran back to the hospital wing. He occupied the rest of his time with a book he had found thrown somewhere around the room. The book was long forgotten the second he felt your hand twitch and your body begin to stir, your tired e/c’s looking around the room in confusion before landing on him. He scooted himself closer to you, brushing a loose strand of hair out of your face as he looked at you with pure concern. It was the same look he had when he confronted you earlier and with that one look, you were able to recall everything that had happened before your collapse.
“I’m sorry I said you’re terrible,” you croak out sadly, your hand wrapping around his wrist and squeezing it gently.
“I’m sorry I made you faint,” he says. “How are you feeling?”
“That was my own fault,” you chortle, “but I feel really good. I know I fainted and all, but I feel much better with whatever Madam Pomfrey gave me.”
“I can tell,” he smiles, moving himself a little back as you sat up with a newfound strength. “She said you can leave when you wake up.”
“Good, now help me out of this bed.”
Draco took your hand and you hopped out of bed excitedly, turning towards him and giving him a tight hug that he returned twice as hard.
“If you’re not too tired, can I show you something?” He asks from above you, his arms still wrapped strongly around you.
“Yes, please,” you answer with a nod against his chest.
Draco steps away from you before taking your hand and walking the two of you out of the hospital wing and towards the stairs that led to the astronomy tower. When you reached the top, huffing, and puffing, he asked you again if you were okay to which you answered with an eager nod.
"Tonight is a blood moon,” he smiles, pointing up towards the very large orange and reddish moon in the starry night sky. It shone brightly but still gave off little light in its wake, the astronomy tower was almost dark, but you still managed to see the blond perfectly, he was watching you with a happy and loving glint in his eyes that you were able to notice. “I was planning on asking you to see it with me tonight, but we kind of ended up elsewhere.”
You threw yourself into his arms, your face buried deep in his robes and the heat radiating off his chest warmed you up in the comfiest way.
“You’re the best, Dray,” you mumble into the cloth of his robes, the clothing vibrating underneath you as he chuckled. You pulled away and gazed up at him, smiling when he placed a kiss on your forehead.
The two of you unknowingly began to sway back in forth in each other’s arms, his hands resting on your lower back while yours were looped loosely around the back of his neck.
“You scared me today,” he begins quietly, “and every day since you’ve started your studying.”
“I know,” you frown, “I’m sorry.”
“Promise me you’ll stop overworking yourself,” he says softly. “I know you’re scared you’ll fail, but I promise you won’t. You’re one of the smartest people I know and I know you’ll get outstanding marks on everything.”
“You think so?” you ask hopefully, your eyes trained on the burnt orange moon as you took in his words.
“I know so.”
A few more minutes of silence pass by, your head now leaning against his chest as the two of you still danced silently. And as if he read your mind, Draco began humming a soft and off-pitch rendition of Claire de Lune. You would laugh every time he forgot a note and would go silent for a moment before backtracking and humming it correctly.
You don’t know how long the two of you stayed up there dancing slowly in each other’s arms with Draco trying his best to hum the top classics of the classical’s, his lips finding yours every now and then to kiss you longingly and tenderly, but one thing was for sure; it was bliss.
Maybe distracting yourself with Draco wasn’t such a bad thing.

Merweek Day Five: We Are Family
Karina Shepard is finally released from the hospital after the battle of London, and Kaidan brings her to his family home in Vancouver, where she meets his parents for the first time.
“Kaidan…” Shepard’s eyes focusing on the blur of pine that seemed to stretch endlessly from her view in the skycar, her voice sounded distant. A growing tightness filled her chest. “Are your parents going to like me?” She paused, already sounding somewhat defeated, resisting the urge to start picking at newly painted nails. She brought a finger to her mouth, seconds from chewing before stopping herself. She needed something to distract her from their destination. There was only about fifteen minutes left until they were at Kaidan’s family home.
Without breaking eye contact from the road, Kaidan gave her a crooked smile and raised eyebrows. “Why wouldn’t they, Karina?” She always seemed to surprise him with questions like this. She could face a Reaper on foot without flinching, but the thought of meeting his mother was what she worried about.
Karina wasn’t sure where to start, she sighed sharply before speaking but the noise got lost in the hum of the engines. “I mean… we were sleeping together when I was still your CO, for starters. We stole the Normandy and committed treason. Not to mention I’m the reason you got tangled with Cerberus…” She took a breath, but it didn’t feel deep enough. “How much do they even know?”
“I told my mother we were together after our date at Apollo’s.” He kept his words plain, clearly code for they didn’t know anything prior. At least no more than the average civilian.
Karina nodded, remembering Apollo’s with a slight smile threatening at the corner of tightly pulled lips. It was the closest they’ve ever gotten to normalcy during the war. A taste, albeit brief, of what was to come after the Reaper’s defeat. Kaidan was so awkward and vulnerable as he fumbled through his words. It was cute.
She finally ripped her gaze from the scenery, turning to Kaidan. “Speaking of Apollo’s, depending on how this goes I might need another sanity check.” There was a slight laugh at the end of her words, but it was strained. She tapped the door with her nails, desperately in search of stimuli to ease her anxiety. “I haven’t done anything family related in over a decade.”
Kaidan drove with one hand, reaching out for her thigh with the other and squeezed. Karina took his hand into hers before she even realized it. She focused on the strong, calloused fingers interlocked with her own. She let her free hand trace the familiar shape of his knuckles.
Kaidan knew this was going to be hard for her. She no longer had a family to call her own after Mindoir. Though he knew nothing could replace that, he wanted to at least make her feel at home with his own family.
They pulled into a driveway, past the forest of dense pine that finally brought the distant orchard into view. This was the first time he’s been home since the war. Kaidan was barely holding back a smile as he finally turned to Karina. “We’ll be fine, don’t worry. It’ll just be for the weekend.”
He hopped out of the car and made his way to Karina’s side, helping her out and grabbing her cane from the back seat, hesitating for a moment before considering getting the wheelchair in the trunk. “Are you good to walk?”
Karina gave him a slight nod, “I’ll be fine, don’t worry.”
Kaidan sighed quietly, knowing that didn’t answer his question. She always said she was fine, regardless of whether it was true or not. He looked her up and down, trying to assess the situation himself before nodding and grabbing the cane.
The doctors didn’t expect her to be able to walk so soon after her injuries, and all the surgeries that followed the battle at London. She still struggled though. At times it was like her legs had forgotten how to keep her up. But she was out of the hospital now, and that on its own felt like a victory
Kaidan offered Karina his arm, which she took with her free hand in equal parts comfort and support. She took a shaky breath when Kaidan rang the doorbell. The chime echoed through the house as she heard frantic steps shuffling towards the door.
They were greeted by a small, silver haired woman who barely made it to Karina’s chest. Her eyes lit up behind thick, black frames when she saw Kaidan. He had to lean over as she smiled and pulled him into a tight hug. It was clear Kaidan got his eyes and smile from his mother. She patted his back several times before she pulled away and turned towards Karina.
“It’s so good to finally meet you.” She pulled Karina in for a hug just as she did for Kaidan, without warning, as if she’d known her for years. Karina felt her muscles tensing up, not expecting such sudden contact. She could count on one Turian hand how many people hug her like this. Several moments passed until she returned the embrace with unsure arms. His mother soon after released, much to Karina’s relief. “Hope the trip wasn’t too bad.”
“We didn’t have any trouble.” Kaidan cut in, noticing that Karina looked more than a little overwhelmed. He took half a step in her direction, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. Karina leaned against him, desperately hoping the attention could be shifted away from her.
It was then Karina saw movement from the hallway headed in their direction. A white haired man who looked almost exactly like Kaidan stepped out.
He walked with such purpose, though it was clear he walked on old injuries that never quite healed right. Despite this, he still carried the posture of someone who served. Karina felt her own posture stiffen reflexively, suddenly feeling like she was a new recruit awaiting inspection all over again. The man stayed silent as he approached, not breaking eye contact.
Kaidan pulled his father in for a hug, neither saying a word. Kaidan’s arms shook slightly. He wasn’t sure if he’d ever see his father again after the reaper war when he was declared missing.
Kaidan retracted before making introductions. “Dad, this is Karina.”
She received a firm handshake from the man. His posture was stiff and awkward as he extended his hand. He clearly didn’t know how to address her, but the feeling was mutual.
Introductions felt like a blur that Karina wasn’t fully present for. Her mind kept drifting off before being pulled back by key words in the conversation. She was never good with small talk, and something about her surroundings kept bringing her mind back to Mindoir, and her own parents.
Luckily, Kaidan and his mother carried the conversation with relative ease. She was updating him about their family. A cousin, as far as Karina could tell. She struggled to keep up with the names.
Karina continued to sip on the wine presented in silence, letting the flavor keep her anchored in the moment. It was a dry red wine, but she couldn’t figure out what kind and felt too awkward to interrupt and ask.
And then the one question she was dreading hit like a bullet to the chest.
“So how’s your family doing, Karina?”
It was a simple enough question, from a well meaning woman who didn’t want to exclude company from conversation, but it required a far more complex answer.
She swallowed hard as she looked over to Kaidan, who looked a shade paler than he did before as he met her gaze. He was seconds from trying to intercept the conversation, before Karina put a hand on his. She knew she’d have to talk about it eventually.
“Oh, I don’t have any family.” It was simple enough, and shut the conversation down before it got too deep. She wasn’t prepared to drop her baggage on a family she hadn’t even gotten the chance to fully know yet.
Karina thought she should feel her pulse rising in her throat by now, but the sensation didn’t come. The ache was a dull one, faded by a decade's time. She quietly pushed the feeling down, shifting the collar of her turtleneck sweater. She silently cleared her throat before changing the subject.
“This wine is lovely. Did it come from this orchard?”
~~
Karina found herself in Kaidan’s childhood bed as the night came to a close, both drained from the combination of wine and late night conversation, but neither could find sleep quite yet. Karina looked around the room decorated in hockey sticks and trophies. It looked like it hadn’t been touched since Kaidan joined the Alliance.
Kaidan caressed her cheek with delicate precision, kissing her temple before speaking. “How’re you feeling? Still need that sanity check?”
Karina leaned against the man at her side, letting her head fall against his shoulder. “Oddly enough, I’m feeling okay.” She paused for a moment, fighting the exhaustion to get the words out. “It’s weird though.”
Kaidan leaned his head against hers. The arm wrapped around her tightening with concern. “How so?”
She sighed. “Just thinking about my own family, I guess. It doesn't hurt as much as it used to.”
He squeezed her shoulder as he kissed the crown of her head, “Time has a way of doing that, huh?”
She wrapped her arms around his waist in response, holding back a yawn. “It’s like I’m almost missing the feeling of loss, because at least there was something there. Y’know?”
Kaidan nodded thoughtfully before planting another kiss, this time more tender as it barely grazed her scalp. “It wasn’t the family you were born with, but I think you managed to find your own family in the time since. You have the old Normandy crew.”
Karina nodded as she began to recline more on the bed, feeling the exhaustion finally begin to overcome her. Kaidan matched her pace, finding their usual position on an unfamiliar bed. Karina let her legs graze his own before they tangled themselves into one another.
“Maybe one day you’ll feel that way here?” Kaidan offered with a low voice, looking at the ceiling as he held Karina close to his side.
Karina pulled herself in closer, until their bodies were flush and her head rested on his chest, nuzzling before finding her usual spot. “I think I’d like that.”

He offends you - part2
featuring : Atsumu, Kageyama
TW : angst, weight insecurity
You can find part 1 here
a/n : sorry for the long wait ! requests are still open
Tumblr media
Atsumu
Not surprisingly Atsumu had got up early the next morning without any particular attention for you. Your state of mind hadn't improved and you had no motivation, so you spent the whole morning on the couch without paying attention to the TV programs. As if that wasn't enough, a message from Osamu came to remind you of the evening before.
Osamu
How are the Onigiris I had added some that aren't on the market yet, and I would have liked your opinion? (Atsumu's is still shitty)
In front of the little enthusiasm of Atsumu you hadn't had the spirit to eat what his twin had prepared. At least it will avoid making lunch and that's good because it was the last thing you wanted to do.
You
Sorry Osamu! We didn't have the pleasure of tasting them, he was too tired! I'll give you my best opinion in a little while
Osamu
Never mind, let's do it at his next game! I've got a booth, and I could pick you up! Can't wait to see you, (not him tho) !
The match or the only thing that Atsumu was preoccupied with at the moment but that had slipped your mind. Yet you were the kind of person who never missed his games and always wore his jersey when you went there to be the best of his supporters. Today you weren't even sure you wanted to go, or even if you were welcome. If he considered you too clingy and preferred to avoid you, he probably didn't want to have to face you there. Volleyball is what he loves above all else, there was no point in tainting his bubble of happiness and it's better to let him enjoy it with his teammates. Just the thought of it made your heart tighten in your chest. Because what you loved most about him was seeing him happy on the field. If giving him space made him better able to handle your relationship then so be it.
Atsumu came home earlier than the day before, he knew that there was no point in staying late when the game was tomorrow. Once again he threw his gym bag into the hallway before heading to the bathroom. You hadn't reacted, you had to stay back, that's what he wanted. However, when he came back into the living room, his hair still wet and only in his underpants, he sat down next to you on the sofa.
"The bastard Samu didn't stop pissing me off because I didn't give us a shot at his latest recipes. Should we do it tonight and tell him how bad it is? "His way of talking was so caustic with that notorious smirk on his face. You just nodded your head without much effort. He frowned at your reaction, or rather your lack of reaction.
"Bad day? "His question was sincere, but the truth is that it was a pretty bad evening, bad night and bad day because of him and he didn't seem to realize it. He was staring at you a little worried while your eyes avoided his, preferring the weather report.
"Yo babe you can tell me everything, I can't risk my lucky charm being in a bad mood tomorrow. "His tone was still playful but that didn't make you want to talk to him either, which made him want to get close to you and put his arms around your waist.
"STOP! Let go of me." Your sudden outburst caught him by surprise and he let you get away from him. But the little voice in your head was just reminding you that only yesterday you were cligny in his eyes even though inside your heart was beating faster just at the sensation of that little touch.
"What's up? Seriously, tell me what's wrong?" He was completely genuine and had given up being a tease. Reluctantly he kept his hands to himself so he wouldn't offend you any more.
"I'm a cligny and that's why you just ignored me. I promise I just wanted you to relax because you're stressed out. I don't want it to happen again so... just... uh... it's fine. "Your eyes were beaming and tears were threatening to run down. This vision was heartbreaking for Atsumu who remained silent for a long time not knowing what to do. Cligny? Oh no, he could spend days hugging you. But it all came back to him. The bath left behind, the onigiris abandoned and lying far away from you in bed. It was all his fault. A wave of guilt suddenly gnawed at him.
"I'm sorry baby. You're not cligny at all. I'm just an asshole, okay? Like, you don't deserve this at all. And you're way too good for me, I'm really sorry. I was stressed out and I made you feel like you didn't deserve my attention. "His voice for once wasn't serene, but he felt really bad. He ventured out again and tried to take you gently in his arms, and to his delight you let him.
"I am truly sorry. What I suggest we eat these famous Onigiri ? And then go to bed with each other. And tomorrow after my game, we can do whatever you want. I'll even book a day at your favorite spa, okay? That's what you deserve. I'll even stay home all week just for cuddles. "He spoke softly as he stroked your hair. You knew he was sincere and that's why you didn't answer and kept your eyes closed enjoying the pleasant feeling of his fingers on your scalp.
And as he had promised, he respected everything he had said, becoming a bit too cligny himself.
Kageyama
When you went to bed you locked yourself in the bathroom to put on your clothes to sleep. Something you never usually did, as you were never ashamed to change in front of Kageyama. He didn't really pay much attention to it, but you preferred that he avoided seeing you so vulnerable for fear that his eyes would look a little too much at the places where he didn't like your body. You waited behind the door until the light was finally turned off to go back to your room, not letting him see what was hidden under your pyjamas. You slipped into the sheets quickly while putting as much distance between you and him as possible, which would prevent him from feeling you and being repulsed by your heavy body. This too wasn't your usual behaviour, you always snuggled up to him, saying that his body was working like a permanent heater. But once again Kageyama was a little dense.
Even more surprisingly, you got up before him so that he wouldn't see you get changed and you opted for large jogging pants and a big sweater. He finally woke up and was quite stunned to see you already up and focused on your phone but didn't make any remarks. There are days like that he thought. He invited you to join him for breakfast, but to his dismay you had already had it, or at least that's what you said. The internet articles on how to lose weight and body fat were much more important and a bowl of chocolate cereal was not going to help you. When he was done he sat on the couch with you. He just wanted to enjoy the weekend with you and judging by the outfit you looked like you wanted to stay home and chill, which he didn't mind. However, you didn't lift your head off your phone and pay him any attention.
"What are you doing on your phone? "He was always so straightforward, but his curiosity itched him not understanding how you could stay away from him.
"Nothing special..." But once again your eyes stayed focused on the screen of your phone and he couldn't help but look over your shoulder. Sports programs? Why were you looking into that? He already had a coach and a whole team of nutritionists and you really didn't need to worry about him.
"Y/N you don't have to..." His life choices didn't have to affect your daily life, no matter if he had to incorporate animal proteins at lunch and fruity smoothies in the morning you didn't have to endure it. Still in your head, you did. You needed to lose weight, to build up your body. You were on two different wavelengths. He didn't push the subject any further, knowing full well that he wouldn't let you do it at the table, and he opted to put his head on your lap and let his hand caress your thighs. Immediately you took his hand off your thighs and tried to push his head away. He couldn't and shouldn't feel what was under your jogging pants.
Kageyama was more than startled. Had he done something wrong? This sudden reaction from you was unexpected and he couldn't understand why.
"Is my head too heavy for your laps? "How ironic was it, heavy was he? Whereas yesterday it was you. The words were stuck in your throat and your breathing accelerated; you were in a state of panic and didn't know what to say or how to get out of this humiliating situation. You would do anything to forget what Kageyama had said the day before when he didn't seem to remember at all. You know that he was often clueless but right away it only made you feel worse. His gaze was still fixed on you looking for the source of your discomfort in order to understand what was wrong with you. He was lost and was not used to all this, which increased his stress level. His exterior was almost imperceptible, except for the fact that his eyes were frantically scanning your body from top to bottom. It was worse, you felt embarrassed and naked under his blue pupils but still didn't dare to say anything. Inside his mind was only stirring to try to understand what was going on and already he felt guilty for not being able to assess the problem and help you. Finally the first tears came to your cheeks, which only made you feel more embarrassed, but he couldn't stay silent.
"Did I hurt you? " The tone of his voice indicated hesitation and a severe lack of confidence. He wanted to help you but felt powerless and hated himself for it. Every time you were there for him when he came back from defeat or frustration and the one time you needed him he was of no use.
"Uh... no." You, on the other hand, hated yourself for being so weak and sensitive. You had nothing to prove to him and crying for so little seemed totally stupid. Yet you couldn't help the fact that it was him and that he was always so clueless really did put a strain on your chest. Kageyama gulped down his saliva with difficulty still not knowing what to do. All of a sudden you started talking again.
"I just don't understand. If you don't like the way I am, why do you stay with me? I know you can date any girl with an athletic body like yours. "Your eyes were empty and tears kept coming out which made your voice even weaker. He still didn't understand, where did all these ideas come from? "I know I don't look like them, but you could have said long before that my body was too big for your. That's why I want to do some sport, so that you don't think I'm heavy when I lie down with you. »
And that's when he realized... He was definitely the worst boyfriend in the world: his lack of communication and his inability to express his feelings well was problematic, but he had taken it to another level. This time it was his words that hurt. He would accept a defeat at the hands of Hinata rather than this, knowing that he was the one causing the pain of his favorite person was terrible. But certainly not as awful as what you're dealing with right now, and the insecurity that it brought you.
"You're perfect. I... I think you're perfect like that. And there's nothing to change. I'm... I'm sorry. I don't think you have to change your body or your weight at all. What I said yesterday was totally inappropriate. I wasn't expecting you to join me. I was focused on my game. And I know that's no excuse! Not a valid argument at all! Just please don't listen to my nonsense. I'm the worst at it. "He couldn't find the right words to express how guilty he felt and to be able to comfort you as you did so well when it came to him. Your head rose up to face him. For a long minute you stared at each other without either of you knowing what to say. And when you cracked a tiny smile Kageyama felt himself revived and meticulously he moved closer to you, taking your hand with his thumb stroking it.
"I am the worst. "And he rushed straight into your arms, his head in the crook of your neck. He liked to feel his body against yours and wouldn't change that for anything in the world. Eventually he detached himself from you and suddenly carried you like a princess.
"Heavy? Says who? Probably some idiot. You're literally perfect. " It was already the third time he used the word 'perfect' and your heart exploded. You also felt the heat rising up to your cheeks almost like the red tint of Kageyama's. There was no need for more words and as he continued to carry you he led you to your room. In his case actions proved more than words and he intended to show you that by first gently removing your sweater. And that's how he put his stamina to the test.

Bruce’s POV
I shove my head in my hands, closing my eyes in a desperate attempt to calm my mind; even though I know it’s pointless. My thoughts have been bouncing around all day, leaving me unable to focus on any task for longer than thirty seconds. Even as they run circles in my head, my thoughts keep making their way back to her.
Y/N has been avoiding me for the past four days. But, to be fair, it’s not only me that she’s been avoiding. Wanda and Bucky noticed it too, but when I asked, they told me to let her come back in her own time. I understand why they would say that; but it’s getting increasingly difficult to hold myself back from knocking on her bedroom door. I’ve never been the type to be that direct- especially when it comes to women- but these past couple of days have been driving me to my wits end. I thought I was just worried, like any good friend would… But that’s not it. Tony’s daily ritual of annoying me while I try to work made me realize that I’m not worried I did something wrong.
  I miss her.
Normally, she would come into the lab with enough coffee to kill a horse and sit with us. She would occasionally help me with an equation or grab Tony some tool he needed- but Y/N mainly stayed to keep us company. She’d join in on jokes and keep us from losing our minds to an unfinished project or a lack of sleep. I miss having her sit on an empty desk and read my screen over my shoulder. I miss seeing the sparkle in her eyes when we’d explain what we’re planning next. What I miss most is simply hearing her laugh at something I said. It’s nice. Knowing that Y/N enjoys my company. Or, at least, she did.
I have no idea what time it is, but it must be late. The compound is dead silent, and it’s pitch black outside. Suddenly, I can feel the other guy clawing at my brain, trying to take control. My head feels as if it’s splitting open, my eyes watering as a searing pain shoots from my temples outwards. The reflection of my face on the desk shows green veins appearing.
Oh no.
Y/N’s POV
I feel nothing but the cool water lapping at my ankles. My mind has been almost blank for the past week. This isn’t new, it’s basically a routine by now. Every once in a while, my head will empty, save for a few thoughts here and there. I won’t feel emotions, and when I do, they are so watered-down that I wonder if they’re real or if it’s just a reflex I’ve picked up after faking it for so long. When I get like this, I hide. I stay in my room, only leaving when necessary. I speak in short sentences, if at all. They don’t need to see me like this. I’m not fun, I don’t speak up, I sit on the couch and zone-out the whole time. Words will go in one ear and out the other, leaving only a small trace behind. I don’t want this version of me to be all they can see.
So here I sit with my feet in the pool at three in the morning because I can’t fall asleep. The pool is my usual choice on these nights. If anyone has a nightmare, they’ll go to the kitchen or the common room. No one comes out here. Especially not at night.
I take steady breaths, keeping myself calm. My eyes drift shut as tears slip out and land on my pajama bottoms. I lift my hand to cover my mouth as I sniffle, not wanting to make noise. The worst part of this is that I don’t have a reason for crying. I just feel like I need to get it out.
As I wipe my tears away, I hear movement behind me to my left and quickly turn. Years of spy training and paranoia helps in the reaction time department. My eyes widen.
“Bruce?” Loud footsteps approach and I realize that isn’t Bruce. The large green figure steps closer, dropping onto the ground beside me, “What are you doing out?”
“Hulk heard pretty girl cry,” He mumbles, not wanting to be loud. Y/N wonders if he’s being quiet out of courtesy or fear.
“I’m okay, big guy. But what about you? Are you okay? Did Stark do something stupid again?” He gives a small shake of his head.
  “Y/N cry.”
My chest tightens slightly, “You… you came out just to check on me?” Hulk hums in agreeance, looking down into the clear blue water of the pool. “That’s sweet of you.”
After a moment of silence, Hulk glances over at me. When our eyes meet, he looks back to the pool and gently slides in, careful not to splash. Although he went slowly, Hulk is so large that the water overflows and spills over the edges of the tile. It soaks my bottom, but I don’t care; it’s just water. I give him a smile as he steps in front of me, “What are you doing?” the depth of the pool makes him slightly shorter than me, causing me to look down the tiniest bit to see his face.
“Pretty girl still sad,” he answers simply. I huff out a laugh.
“Why do you call me that?”
“Hulk think Y/N pretty,” Hulk looks down, like he’s nervous.
I roll my eyes with a soft chuckle, “Well, you need to meet more people,” he looks back up at me.
“Puny Banner think Y/N pretty too,” my eyes widen slightly.
“Really?” I feel my face heat up, but I try to keep calm. I don’t want to get my hopes up. So, what if he thinks I’m pretty? That doesn’t automatically mean he thinks of me as anything more than a friend.
“Yes,” I take a moment to collect my thoughts before Hulk asks, “Why pretty Y/N so sad?”
After taking a deep breath, I explain, “Sometimes… my mind goes blank and I- I feel kind of empty?” Knowing he’s probably confused, I elaborate, “Do you remember that shell I showed you? It was small and pink- you called it fragile.”
His eyes light up a bit as he nods, starting to get it, “Remember how I told you that a crab used to live inside of it, like a home?” Another nod, “Well… I kind of feel like a shell without a crab. It’s empty, and it just sits there until it’s useful again. When I feel like that, it’s sometimes hard for me to feel happy.” Hulk seems to get it but doesn’t say anything. Then, suddenly, he goes underwater. I watch curiously as he resurfaces, cheeks puffed out full of water. He looks up and puckers his lips, spurting water from his mouth like a roman fountain. And for the first time in the past week, I laugh. It’s quiet, subtle, but it’s real; and it feels good. Hulk sees and smiles when he’s done. Looking at him now, in this moment, it’s even harder for me to understand how people could be afraid of him. Hulk may look big and scary, but he’s a sweetheart.
“Y/N happy?” I couldn’t stop my smile if I wanted to.
  “I am now.”
He looks excited, “Hulk make Y/N happy?”
“Yes, you do,” He smiles wide and steps forward, setting his head on your lap. He’s so precious. Carefully, I slide my fingers into his sopping hair, gently massaging his scalp. His eyes fall shut as he stays where he is. I’m completely soaked now, but I couldn’t care less- the incredible Hulk himself is snuggling me like a puppy and it’s adorable.
I don’t know how much time passes like this. Eventually, Hulk pulls away with a frown, “Puny Banner want out.” I reach out to cup his cheek, causing him to lean into my touch with a content smile.
“That’s okay, isn’t it? You can see me again soon.” I use both my hands to pull his face closer to mine, allowing me to place a small kiss on his forehead. He nods slowly.
“Bye-bye pretty Y/N,” And with that, he begins shrinking. I move my hands under his arms so that Bruce doesn’t drown as soon as he wakes up. When he’s back to normal, he immediately shoots up and looks around frantically.
“Bruce- it’s okay, you’re okay! I’m right here,” he calms down and leans his arms against the edge of the pool to hold himself up.
“Oh my- Y/N! Are you okay? Are you hurt?!” He begins looking over me for any injuries.
“No, no, I’m okay. He didn’t hurt anyone,” once he relaxes some, he places his head in his hands. Bruce didn’t move far after transforming, so he’s still close enough for you to comfortably place your fingers back into his hair.
  “Y/N… Are you okay?”
I sigh, “Bruce, I promise you, Hulk did not hurt me,” he tenses slightly.
“I wasn’t talking about him…” I get the message and remove my hand from his hair.
“I’m sorry. I was playing with Hulk’s hair before, but I shouldn’t have assumed that you’d be okay with it too,” he looks confused. “You’re two different people with two different opinions. Just because he likes something, that doesn’t mean you like it too.”
“Actually,” Bruce looks down in his attempt to hide a blush, “I, uh… I do kinda like it. It feels… It feels nice.” I smile softly and nod, continuing the motions I was using on Hulk, getting a very similar reaction.
Bruce opens his eyes and looks up at me, not speaking until our eyes meet and are locked for an amount of time that is probably too long for ‘just friends’.
“Are you afraid of him?” I shake my head no, “Why not?”
I hold back my giggles, “Because you’re both big babies.”
His eyes widen slightly with curiosity, “What did he say that would make you think that?” The laugh escapes before I can stop it.
“Let’s see… He came out just because he heard me crying and wanted to check on me, then he called me pretty. After all that, he spit water out of his mouth like a fountain to cheer me up,” Bruce smiles softly, but it falls as he thinks on the words.
“Wait… What did he call you?” He sounds nervous. I was hoping he’d overlook that, but I guess I’m not that lucky.
“Hulk kept calling me ‘pretty girl’ or 'pretty Y/N’,” suddenly feeling shy, I continue, “He’s actually really sweet when you get to know him…” My voice trails off as I worry if I said too much. I know Bruce doesn’t like talking about Hulk, especially right after switching back. However, he only seems to blush at my words.
“Did he- uh, did he say anything else?” Bruce is looking down at his hands, fidgeting nervously like a child who is afraid he’s going to be yelled at. As if the skies finally clear on a cloudy day, I get an idea as to why he is acting this way. Against my better judgement, I speak up.
“He said that you do too… That you think I’m pretty, I mean!” I press my lips together tightly, trying to form a seal. Maybe if my lips fuse together, it’ll finally get me to shut my mouth before I make a fool of myself rather than after. Alas, it doesn’t work, “Hulk probably only said that to make me feel better though, so don’t worry.”
Bruce tenses up at the mention of that. I open my mouth to apologize, but he beats me to it, “No, he didn’t. I- um… I do… think that you’re pretty…” His face flushes beet red and he refuses to meet my gaze. I slowly inch my hand closer to his until they are on top of each other. Carefully, he interlocks our fingers, obviously still scared that he might hurt me. I give his hand a gentle squeeze, causing him to look up.
  “Thank you.”
We spend the next few minutes in total silence, staring at our joined hands and appreciate how calm this moment is. No missions, no aliens, no Loki, and most importantly- no Tony. I don’t think either of us could do this with him teasing us the whole time. Bruce moves his hand and, for a second, I’m afraid he’s going to pull away. Instead, he holds both of my hands in both of his, rubbing his thumb over my knuckles lovingly.
“Y/N, would you… Would you like to go to dinner with me?”
I quickly- probably too quickly- nod, trying to conceal my smile. After realizing how desperate I must look, I pull myself together, “I’d love to, Bruce.”
His eyes shine in the moonlight as he smiles wide. Keeping his hands in mine, I pull them up to my face and plant gentle kisses on his knuckles. We just stay there, blushing and grinning like idiots as we bask in the comfort that comes with not being alone. No words are spoken, but they don’t need to be. I look into his eyes and I can feel the warmth and love radiating from him. And I will do everything in my power to show Bruce that I trust him and Hulk. That I am not afraid of him and never will be.
Tony’s POV
“Did I just see that right?” asks Steve as he stares in disbelief at what we just witnessed.
“Do we need to get you bifocals, grandpa? I knew you were old, but I didn’t think your eyesight was that questionable yet,” I quip as I slide my phone back into my pocket.
F.R.I.D.A.Y alerted me as soon as the code green began. I woke Steve on my way to where the big guy was, but when I saw what was happening, I held Cap back. Y/N has a special effect on Hulk, we all know it. This only proves it. Steve scoffs at my comment, but I don’t care, it’s about damn time Bruce talks to her. Y/N is good for him, she makes him happy… They both deserve to be happy, to feel loved. If they can do that for each other, who are any of us to call it dangerous.
Steve looks back at them through the sliding door, “What do we do now?”
Bruce looks so happy. He’s never happy after going green. We can’t see Y/N’s face from this angle, but I can only guess how she must feel right now. For being a couple of Earth’s mightiest heroes who kick ass for a living, they seem content. Peaceful even.
  “We go back to sleep.”

The One That Got Away

Word Count: 3.1k
TW: Angst, shitty parents

Charlie was running and crying. The conversation she just had with her parents played over and over again in her mind. She didn’t know where she was running to, she just needed to be anywhere but her home. When she finally stopped running, she was completely exhausted. Looking up, she realized that she had run to Steve’s apartment. With the little strength she had left, Charlie ran up the stairs and knocked on her friend’s door, praying to whatever God that was listening that he was home.
A few frantic knocks later, Steve opened the door. He smiled when he saw who it was until he noticed the tears that were still falling on her cheeks and how her body spasmed with every hiccup caused by the lack of oxygen in her lungs from both the running and the crying.
Steve stepped aside, telling Charlie to come in. His front door opened right into his living room and when he moved she could see into the room. That’s when she noticed the coffee table covered in a deck of cards and the man sitting on the floor, cards in hand from the game she had clearly disturbed. Bucky. When she looked at him, he had already been looking at her. It was the first time she saw him in almost a week and it wasn’t because he wanted to see her. After making eye contact with Bucky, Charlie started to panic.
Breaking eye contact to look at Steve, she slowly started to walk backwards.
‘’I’m.. sorry.. I.. didn’t.. know.. Bucky.. was.. here..’’ She apologized, each word followed by a hiccup.
Charlie turned around to walk over to the stairs, her heart beating so fast that the only sound she could hear was the blood rushing to her head. It’s probably why she didn’t hear the footsteps that followed rapidly behind her and before she knew it, hands were gently grabbing her and she was pulled back into a man’s chest, one arm wrapping around her shoulders and the other one wrapping around her middle, holding her. She let herself relax into his arms and her hands reached up to the arm around her shoulders. Being taller than Steve, Charlie didn’t need to turn around to know it was Bucky who was hugging her. She only started crying harder, overwhelmed with emotions from everything that happened in the past week.
Feeling that she was only getting worst, Bucky turned Charlie around in his arms. One hand cradled the back of her head, making her hide her face into the crook of his neck while the other, rested on her back, gently pushing her against his chest. She instinctively wrapped her arms around his waist and held on tightly like she was scared he might let go. He moved his fingers on her scalp in a reassuring movement and whispered in her ears to try and calm her down It’s okay. You’re okay. I got you. You’re safe. After a few minutes her breathing finally slowed down, her hiccups were gone and instead of sobbing, only a few tears kept falling on her cheeks at a much slower pace.
Steve was standing on his doorstep, looking at the scene in front of him. Seeing Charlie in so much pain was truly heartbreaking.
When she moved to leave, he hadn’t had time to try and stop herbefore Bucky was on his feet and chasing after her. As his best friend passed him, he caught a glimpse of his face and how worried he looked. Steve was relieved to see that Bucky still cared about her. He wasn’t the kind to hold a grudge and the fact that he hadn’t reached out to her at all since the incident had worried Steve.
Bucky moved to delicately cup her cheeks in his hands, his thumbs brushing away her tears as they kept falling while he leaned back to look at her. She kept her eyes to the floor, embarrassed and scared to look at him. He let one of his hands fall from her cheek to her chin, using his index finger to gently tilt her head up so he could finally meet her eyes. He felt a lump form in his throat when her blue eyes met his. There was so much pain in them, he had never seen her this way and he felt theneed to protect her, theneed to hurt whoever had hurt his Lily so badly. With his finger still tilting her head up towards him, he moved his hand to bring her face closer to his and kissed her forehead, lingering for a few moments.
Charlie felt her whole body relax at the contact of Bucky’s lips on her skin, letting her eyes close slowly and her hands tightenedaround him. He gave her another small kiss on her forehead before stepping back but never letting go of her.
‘’Come on, sweetheart. Let’s go inside.’’ He smiled at her, reassuringly.
She nodded and let go of him, expecting him to do the same. Except, he never broke away from her. His hand slid down from her cheek, to the crook of her neck, to finally wrap his arm around her shoulders while moving to stand next to her instead of in front of her. Steve was still standing there, looking at them fondly. Steve didn’t know if he he would have been able to calm her down the way Bucky just did.
Charlie walked in first, followed by Bucky and Steve was right behind them, closing the door. The 3 of them moved to Steve’s couch and sat down together. The boys waited for their friend to talk, not wantingto make her feel pressured totell them what had happened, both trying to hide how anxious they were to know who had hurt her while already plotting what they would do to make those people pay.
Bucky held her hand, his thumb rubbing the back of it slowly back and forth while Steve went to get her a blanket and gently put it on her shoulders and instinctively, Charlie snuggled into the blanket and silently thanked her friend.
A few minutes went by in total silence. Charlie had almost completely stopped crying, a few stray tears lingered on her cheeks. She cleared her throat and sat up on the couch, catching the attention of her friends.
‘’I...’’ She started but trailed off.
Bucky squeezed her hand gently. ‘’You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.’’
She shook her head slightly, squeezing his hand back and cleared her throat once more before taking a deep breath.
‘’My parents took everything from me.’’
***
‘’We need to talk.’’
She had a bad feeling about this, a really bad feeling. She put her books down on the small table near the staircase and looked back at her father. She slowly nodded, showing him that she was listening.
‘’Your mother and I talked about your little temper tantrum you’ve been having for the past week.’’
The conversation was off to a really bad start. She was already getting angry but decided against cutting him off and that it was best to let him continue.
‘’Avoiding us, not talking to us, you even went as far as ignoring us. You have been acting like a spoiled brat.’’
Maybe she should have sat down for this.
‘’But, it’s not your fault.’’ He continues.
Okay, that she wasn’t expecting.
‘’No, it’s not.’’ Her mother chimed in.
‘’It’s our fault.’’ Her dad added. ‘’It’s our fault for spoiling you and letting you get away with everything. We should have been more strict, more firm with you. We took it easy on you.’’
Her heartbeat picked up and her palms started to sweat. Now, she wanted to say so much but she couldn’t make a sound, as if her brain had forgotten how to talk.
‘’As long as you live under my roof, you will do as I say and there will be no talking back to me otherwise you can kiss this..’’ He waved around to him, her mother and their house. ‘’..goodbye.’’
Charlie started to feel nauseous.
‘’If you want to keep that stupid little job that Igot you, and that I have let you kept so far, you will do what I ask of you.’’
Mr. Mathews walked to the living room, his wife on his heels but Charlie couldn’t move. It was like she was paralyzed.
A ‘’Sit down’’ came from the living room. Loud enough for her to hear and stern enough to know it wasn’t up for debate.
Doing as she was told, Charlie walked into the living room and sat on the sofa, facing her parents. She kept rubbing her hands together, trying to make them stop sweating so much. Her heart was beating so fast and so loud, she was sure they could hear it from where they were standing.
‘’We are making some changes around here. First off, you are too old to be single. Girls your age are supposed to be married and have kids. We’velet you have your littlefun, you tried to find ‘’true love’’ but all that nonsense ends now. Your mother and I have 5 men, sons of our closest friends, who have the potential to be excellent husbands. Some of them are even too good for you. They all have the means to provide for you and the family you will have. You will be going on dates with each of them and if by the end of date number five you haven’t chosen who you are going to marry, we will.’’
Charlie’s eyes opened wider with every word he said, her heart started beating even faster and she could barely hear what he was saying. It felt like something was crushing her, keeping her lungs from expending properly to give her oxygen. She wanted to stand up and scream at him but she was so dizzy, she knew if she tried to get up she would fall right back down.
His last sentence completely broke her. Her vision was blurry from the tears that were rushing down her cheeks and she wasn’t sure if she was crying because she was sad or if it was out of anger.
‘No, please.’’ She begged, barely above a whisper.
‘’You will be married by the end of the year. If for some reason, you aren’t, you will be forced to move out, I will make sure you lose your job and you won’t be allowed in this house again. Under no circumstances.’’
She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. It couldn’t be happening. Her parents looked at her, no emotions showing as if they had just announced her they had decided to paint the living room a new shade and not like they had just crushed her dreams and ruined everything she had been working towards. They knew how much it all meant to her and that she didn’t have the means to live on her own. They knew that she had no choice but to comply to their orders.
‘’Please, please, please don’t do this.’’ She cried out. ‘’Why are you doing this? You know how much all of it means to me.’’ Panic overtook her. A few minutes ago she couldn’t get a single word out, and now she couldn’t stop talking.
She should have stopped. She should have stayed silent. Because there was something that they hadn’t taken away from her yet, something she could have kept and when she realized what she had said, it was too late to take it back.
‘’I’ll do everything you want but not this, please. Is it because of James? Because you don’t like his family? I promise we are just friends. Please.’’ She kept begging.
She knew she probably sounded pathetic, spineless and weak as she was begging her parents to let her have the freedom to choose how to live her life.
Bringing up Bucky was a bad idea.
‘’Which brings us to our next point.’’
Everything in her started screaming, alarms were going off. You should have kept your mouth shut being repeated over and over again in her head.
‘’You are forbiddenfrom seeing that Barnes kid again. If I see him in my house again, if I hear from anyone that you so much as smiled at him you will be gone. Do I make myself clear?’’
In under 10 minutes, she had lost almost every single thing she cared about. They had taken everything from her. Even one of her best friends. She had been smart enough not to mention Steve.
At this point, Charlie was full-on sobbing. Her parents were still looking down at her, no emotions showing whatsoever aside from the disappointment that was burning in their eyes. Seeing that there was no point in continuing the conversation, her father just scoffed at her, shook his head, walked out of the living room and disappeared into his room. Her mom lingered behind for a few more moments and followed her husband.
Charlie stared blankly ahead, her cheeks and nose red from all the crying. So many emotions were rushing through her. Heartbreak, pain, betrayal, anger, grief and the overwhelming feeling of being absolutely powerless.
She had completely spaced out and when the world finally came back into focus, she had gotten up, out of the house and she was running.
The sun had set and the streets were only lit up by the porch lights that were still on, there was no one in sight and the only sound was her feet hitting the ground as she ran. She didn’t know where exactly she was running to, her legs knew exactly where to take her, to the one person she felt completely safe with: Steve Rogers.
***
Both men were silent as Charlie was finishing telling them what had happened. She had left out the part where her father had forbidden her from seeing Bucky.
Steve sympathized with his friend’s pain, her parents had crossed so many lines. Bucky, on the other hand, was absolutely furious. He kept thinking of the story she had told him about her grandparents and her locket, about how she wanted a love like theirs and the glimmer in her eyes while she talked about it.
The glimmer was gone and happiness had been snuffed out of her eyes.
His jaw clenched from the anger and his brows furrowed, making deep creases on his forehead.
‘’Do you want me to talk to your dad? I’m gonna go talk to your dad.’’ He didn’t even wait for her answer, he was already up and on his way to give Mr. Mathews a piece of his mind, using a language that shouldn’t be repeated out loud.
‘’No!’’ She almost screamed, freezing him into place.
She started chewing on her bottom lip when Bucky turned around to look at her. She had been speaking so softly ever since she had gotten here, none of them were expecting for her voice to come out so loud. Not even her. It made Bucky suspicious, as if she hadn’t told the whole story. He raised his eyebrow and when she did everything to avoid looking in his eyes, it confirmed what he had been thinking. She had left out something. Something important.
He slowly walked towards the couch and kneeled down on the floor in front of her, putting both his hands on her knees.
‘’Lily.’’ His tone made her flinch, it was clear that he knew she hadn’t said the whole truth.
She looked at his hands that were resting on her knees, but never into his eyes.
‘’Lily...’’ He repeated, his tone a lot softer. Almost a whisper.
She looked into his eyes and tears started to burn her eyes again.
Steve sat closer to her, wrapping his small arm around her shoulders on top of the blanket. He brought her closer to his side and looked at Bucky.
‘’What aren’t you telling us?’’ Steve asked.
“I don’t want to say...”
‘’Char...’’
‘’Please don’t make me say it.”
Steve simply gave her a light squeeze and kissed her cheek.
‘’You can trust us.’’ He tried again.
Charlie sighed and looked up at Steve, begging him with her eyes. He gave her a small smile, encouraging her to get it all out. She took a deep breath and looked down again, into Bucky’s eyes. They were so beautiful and so full of life. Guilt was eating at her. She grabbed both of his hands in hers and squeezed them hard which only made him frown more. Her eyes fell to their hands and she told them what her dad had said about seeing Bucky, but she had mumbled in such a hushed voice that neither Bucky or Steve heard what she said.
‘’You’re gonna have to speak up sweetheart, we can’t hear you.’’Bucky chuckled, trying to lighten up the mood.
‘’My dad...’’ She stopped, her voice breaking from the tears. She cleared her throat. ‘’My dad said I wasn’t allowed to see James anymore... Forbidden, was the word he used.’’
Steve was shocked, his jaw to the floor. His eyes quickly turned to his friend, worried about his reaction. He looked like someone had just sucker punched him. His expression was blank and he was staring into nothing.
Bucky’s mind was overflowing with thoughts. Was he that bad? That much of a low life that fathers had to forbid their daughters from being in contact with him? You’d have to be pretty worthless to have someone forbid their daughter from being friends with you.
Breaking from his trance, he lean backwards and got up, pulling on his hands to free them from Charlie’s but it only made her tighten her hold on them.
‘’Let go.’’
‘’James... Please talk to me.’’ She pleaded.
He tried pulling on his hands again.
‘’Let go.’’ He repeated.
‘’No.’’
‘’Charlie, let go!’’ His tone was harsh and he pulled harder, leaving her no choice but to let go.
He used her first name. He hadn’t used it since he had decided to call her Lily. His Lily.
She started to panic again, raising to her feet. She took one step towards him while he took a step backwards, trying to put some distance between them.
Her throat tightened, making it hard to swallow.
‘’James...’’ She croaked.
‘’Bucky. My name is Bucky.’’ His tone was dry, emotionless.
In that moment, Charlie swore that everyone in the room heard the sound of her heart breaking in her chest.
I don't even know if people are still reading this, but if you are I hope you like it.

When Y/N woke up, she wasn’t sure what was wrong, but she felt out of it. She blindly reached out next to her, feeling for Zuko’s warm body, but he wasn’t there. He must be off at work at the Jasmine Dragon already or something…
Y/N turned on her phone and groaned. 8:30 AM. She had to get up; she had promised Katara that she would help set up for Aang’s birthday, and she was supposed to meet her in one hour. Sighing, she kicked her blanket off and peeled her eyes open, slightly shivering from the cold. She squinted her eyes. Why was the sunlight so bright? Her eyelids felt heavy, and she wanted more than anything to pull the blanket back up and make herself comfortable once more. However, she scooted her body out of bed, forcing herself to get up.
Her body didn’t approve. She groaned, rubbing her pounding temples with her hand. She stayed still, hoping for the headache to pass before she made any sharp movements. After a while, the throbbing ceased a bit, and Y/N deemed it safe to move. She checked the time. 8:42 AM. She cursed, getting clothes from her closet as fast as she could. Ignoring her headache, she made a quick mental checklist of the things she needed to do. 1. Take a shower. 2. Get dressed & get ready. 3. Pick up the cake from the bakery, and 4. Drive over to Katara’s and help her with anything else. She could do that in 48, now 47 minutes, right?
She trudged through her room, through the hallway, heading towards the bathroom. She brought her clothes over, setting it down on the counter next to the sink. She paused, leaning on the bathroom door for just a second, feeling lightheaded. She sighed, closing her eyes. Why was it so hot all of a sudden? Why was the room spinning…? That never happened before… Where was this sickness coming from? Her knees sank into the ground. No. She promised to help Katara. She lifted herself up with difficulty, using the edge of the sink as support. She staggered, but eventually, she pulled herself up.
Maybe a shower would make her feel better? She pulled her clothes off and got into the shower. The warm water ran against the skin, flowing through her hair.  She was going to be fine. She needed to help Katara! She didn’t want Katara to set up the party all by herself.
Ahh, yes, this was making her feel… better. Right? The water steamed, fogging up the shower glass. She shampooed her hair, running her fingers through her scalp, but it wasn’t making her feel better. No, it was making her feel worse. She was feeling incredibly dizzy and her limbs were weak. The steam from the hot water made her even more dizzy. The shower violently swayed to one side, the world spinning too fast for Y/N to keep up. She washed out the bubbles in her hair, her body slowly sinking into the floor of the shower booth. She was now on all four, unable to stay standing.
What was happening to her? Y/N washed her body with a loofa, still sitting on the floor of the booth, moving slowly with low energy. She washed all the bubbles off and turned off the water. She crawled out and grabbed a towel and the clothes from the countertop. She wiped away the water with the towel and she slowly pulled the clothes on, starting with her lower body. The ripped jeans she picked out were seriously annoying to put on. Her feet kept getting caught in the holes, and it was especially hard because Y/N was seeing double. She then pulled on her top and exhaled in relief. She reached for her phone. 9:13 AM. She internally screamed; she spent way too long to shower. She only had 17 more minutes to do… what?
What was number 2 on her checklist again? She couldn’t make her brain think. She was too busy trying to stay conscious. She closed her eyes, shakily bringing her legs in, moving her body into a fetal position. She rested her head on her knees, trying to stop the room from spinning so severely, trying to stop her from feeling so weak, and trying to stop herself from passing out. She felt faint and she didn’t know if she could get up. She would rather lay on the cold tiles of the bathroom floor.
“Y/N?” Someone knocked at the door, and Y/N barely recognized his voice. Her brain was not working at all.
“Zuko?” she weakly managed to call his name. Hadn’t he gone to work?
“Hey, are you okay? Can I come in? You’ve been in the bathroom for over 40 minutes.” 40 minutes!? How has time gone by so fast?! Y/N reached one arm up and unlocked the bathroom door, grunting at the effort. The door burst open, letting in the cool air from outside the bathroom. She sighed, and tried to look up at Zuko. “Oh my gosh, Y/N!” He kneeled down next to her, his hand immediately on her forehead, checking her temperature. “You’re burning up! What happened?”
“I- I woke up feeling sick and now I’m about to pass out,” she breathed. Her wet hair was dripping onto the white bathroom tiles. Her breathing was shallow, and her surroundings were still wobbly. Her eyesight was going wonky… why was everything blacking out? She squinted, trying to focus on Zuko, but he kept moving. “Z- Zuko, stop moving, I can’t focus on you.”
“Y/N,” he looked at her with concerned eyes. “I’m not moving.” Her mouth opened to form an “o” shape, and she blinked. She was sure he was moving. “Here, lean on me, okay?” She could hear him repositioning himself. She rested her head on the front of Zuko’s chest. She could hear his heartbeat. Thump… thump… thump…  She slumped further onto his knees as the world spun and her vision went black.

“Y/N? Hey, are you alright?” Zuko was above Y/N, looking very worried.
“Z- Zuko? What time is it?” Zuko checked his phone.
“9:53, but that’s not important. You literally just passed out.”
“9:53?!” She was late! “Oh no, oh no. I need to pick up the cake and get to Katara’s!” She quickly sat up, which caused her to groan. She shouldn’t have done that; she buried her head in her hands to try and stop the room from spinning once again.
“Hey,” Zuko gently pushed Y/N back down. “I’ll take care of it. It’s okay, you need some rest. Clearly you’re not okay.” He spoke in a soft, calm voice, which calmed her down a bit, but Y/N’s frantic eyes darted all over his face. She shook her head.
“No, I’m fine,” she insisted, despite her headache and the dizziness. She couldn’t get up, let alone drive, but she was undeniably stubborn. She had to help, even though she was definitely not fine. “I promised Katara I would help with Aang’s birthday party. The cake is under my name; only I can pick it up from the bakery. I swear, I’m fine.”
She got up to prove her point, but it backfired. Her knees collapsed from weakness, causing her to trip over herself. She clutched the side of the couch for support. Why did she have to be so dizzy? Zuko’s arms grabbed her from behind, and she lay limp, allowing him to carry her. Why did it take so much effort to stay standing??
“Y/N. I’m worried about you, and you definitely can’t go alone.” He sighed. “If this is really important…” Y/N eagerly nodded. It was important! “I’ll go with you. Sounds good?” Y/N nodded again. That was fine! She checked her phone. 9:58 AM! Already?!
Oh wow, she had a lot of messages. She scrolled through her notifications...
Katara: Hey Y/N! Are you coming?
Katara: Y/N?
Katara: Sokka and I are starting to worry…  are you okay?
Sokka: helloooooo?
Sokka: Y/N? you’re… very late ahaha
Sokka: seriously tho- hello?? can ya answer
Sokka: y/nnnn answer me :(
Sokka: heart 💔 been broke 📉 so many times ⏰ i don’t know 🤔 what to believe
Katara: Missed Calls (4)
Sokka: Missed Calls (5)
Y/N groaned: she didn’t mean to make them worry! She was completely fine. She quickly texted them back, letting them know that she was running late but she’ll be coming soon. She clicked her phone off and got up, letting Zuko support her. Y/N was grateful; she didn’t think she could walk on her own. He led her to the car, once again looking at her worriedly.
“Are you sure you want to go? You can just text them that you can’t make it,” he said. She waved it off. She was going to be fine. She slumped further into the seat, rubbing her temples. Her head still hurt like crazy, and on top of that, she was shivering from the cold. Why was her body like this…? “You’re cold?” She nodded. She was very cold. “Y/N… it’s 82 degrees.” Oh shoot. Now he was going to worry even more.
“It’s fine, it’s fine. I’ll be fine,” she reassured him. She sent him a smile, just to tie it in. He bit his lip, perhaps to bite back some more worried comments, but instead he started the car. The dizziness multiplied as soon as Zuko started driving. She probably should have stayed home, but it’s too late now… “Head over to umm…” Y/N racked her brain, trying to remember the name of the bakery. She closed her eyes as another headache struck her temples. She was tired of this.
“Y/N?” Another worried glance. She had been “thinking” for too long.
“Oh, umm, the one in the plaza next to Katara’s house. It has brick walls.” Zuko changed course, heading to the bakery Y/N described. The car ride felt terrible. Every second, her head hurt, the world kept spinning, and Zuko kept on looking at her as if she was going to pass out again any minute. Which could actually be a possibility, but she put that aside.
Finally, they arrived at the bakery. Zuko gestured for Y/N to stay in the car, which she was totally fine with. She felt like she closed her eyes for a second, and when she blinked, Zuko was already back in the car with the cake in the backseat.
“Oh, hi… Welcome back!” Y/N said. Zuko sighed.
“Y/N, you need to rest. You… look terrible.”
“Gee.. thanks.” She knew, in fact, that if she looked as bad as she felt, she looked very terrible. “But it’s too late now! We’re practically already at Katara’s house. I can see it from here.” Zuko sighed again and started the short drive. After only a few minutes, the two pulled up in Katara’s driveway. Zuko helped Y/N out, and she was not ready. Her leg crumpled as soon as it hit the floor, but Zuko caught her. She mumbled “sorry” as she tried to stand up straight. Zuko practically carried her; she definitely could not walk on her own. Everything was spinning, including Zuko, so she trusted him to lead the way. He rang the doorbell. Sokka answered the door.
“Hey guys! Hi Zuko, didn’t know you were coming.” Y/N smiled. Sokka looked at the scene in front of him. Y/N knew that they must look really weird: she was leaning on Zuko, and Zuko was supporting her with one arm around her waist. “Y/N, you guys are getting reeaaal comfy there.”  She could see Zuko rolling his eyes. “Anyways, come in! We’re just finishing up decorating.”
Zuko kicked his shoes off and he helped Y/N do the same. Ahh shoot. Everything spun around her once again. She shut her eyes as tight as she could until it passed. She opened her eyes, looking up at Zuko. His concerned eyes met hers, asking a silent question. Are you sure you’re okay? She nodded, sighing.
“Hey Y/N!” Katara waved at her.
“Sorry I’m so late, I got held up.” Katara nodded in understanding. She could feel Zuko’s eyes on her but she ignored him. She did get held up. By passing out... but she could leave out the details.
“Can you help me put this up?” Katara held up an orange banner in one hand. She read the banner: Happy birthday Appa! Appa? No, she read it again. Aang. Ugh, she couldn’t even read anymore. She climbed up the ladder with one side of the banner in her hand. Shoot. She stopped midway, gripping the edges of the metal ladder as everything spun harshly around her. She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to squish out all of the dizziness.
“Y/N?” She heard Katara’s voice calling to her, but she couldn’t tell from where. She felt someone pulling her off the ladder. The warmth of the body told her that it was Zuko.
“Y/N, are you okay?” someone asked her, but she couldn’t tell who. She felt Zuko pull her in tighter, but she couldn’t see anything since her eyes were completely shut. She wasn’t planning on opening them until everything was back to normal, which meant that it would be a while. She felt terrible, the room wouldn’t stop spinning, her head pounded, and everything was gross. She buried her head further into Zuko’s arms. Everything hurts so much. She wanted everything to stop.
 “Y/N?” Zuko asked her gently.
She heard someone (Sokka?) open and close a cupboard. “Let me take your temperature. Holy- 104.8! Y/N! You shouldn’t have come here. You need to rest.”
“That’s what I was saying, but she insisted on coming.” She heard Zuko’s exasperated voice. She choked back a sob. Everything hurt so bad, the room was spinning and she couldn’t even open her eyes. She should have just stayed home.
“Y/N? Are you going to pass out?” Katara’s worried voice asked.
“Y/N, it’s not healthy to pass out twice in one day,” Zuko whispered.
“Twice?! When did she-”
“This morning. I found her on the bathroom floor.”
“That’s why she was late..? Y/N! You didn’t have to come if you weren’t feeling well!” Everyone else mumbled in agreement.
“Hey, Y/N?” Zuko asked again, softer than before. “Can you say something?”
“I’m sorry,” she muttered. Everyone let out a sigh of relief.
“It’s okay, but you seriously need to rest, alright? It looks like it just keeps getting worse. How do you feel right now?” Zuko’s hand gripped hers.
“Terrible.” That summed it all up. She felt herself be lifted up, and she was carried away. Zuko’s footsteps echoed in her brain. She was set down on a bed and tucked in.
“Get well soon, okay?” A tender kiss was planted on the top of her burning forehead. She was going to get well for Zuko’s sake.

part 1, part 2
Lena sighed as she watched Kara sleep, her head laying on your bed in the medbay. She could tell how attached Kara had become to you within a matter of days, which worried her in case things didn’t work out. She didn’t want to see Kara hurt; and more than that, she didn’t want you going into the foster system after so much trauma – trauma that was largely her family’s doing.
“Hey,” Lena jumped as Alex entered the room, suddenly being pulled from her thoughts.
She turned to face the red head, “Hey”.
Alex furrowed her brows, “You should be getting some rest too.” Lena waved her off.
“At least go and get a coffee or something? Some fresh air?” Lena shakes her head again,
“It’s fine, I’m used to sleepless nights.” Alex sighs, placing the paperwork she was holding down at a bench.
“She’s gonna be okay.” Lena feels a hand placed comfortingly on her shoulder.
“Which one.” Lena laughs sadly.
“Both of them. Kara’s strong, Lena. You know that.” Lena nods, she does know that, what she doesn’t know is if she is. “And, y/n, well she has us three to make sure she’ll be okay.”
Lena crosses her arms, “I really do hope so. I can’t imagine what my mother put her through.”
Alex looks sideways to the brunette, “You know that none of that is your fault.”
When Lena doesn’t answer, Alex tugs her by the arm, forcing her to look at her.
“Lena, you didn’t even know that your mother had people running CADMUS while she was in prison, you couldn’t have known what was going on. We didn’t even know there was another facility. Please don’t blame yourself.” Lena nods ever so slightly, Alex squeezes her shoulder,
“You are not your family, Lena.” The brunette’s green eyes shift. She hasn’t felt like this in a little while, Kara usually kept Lena’s thoughts about herself at bay; but it’s also been a little while since her family has done something this bad.
The pair stood in silence for a little while before your heart monitor started to spike. Kara woke up frantic,
“What’s going on? Is she okay?!” Lena grabbed hold of her girlfriend’s hand while Alex checked you over,
“It seems like she’s just having another nightmare, the sedative I gave her must be wearing off.”
Kara’s eyes welled with tears as your face contorts in anguish. Alex pulls both Lena and Kara back as your movements become more erratic.
“Y/n, y/n, hey you need to wake up, alright? C’mon, you got this, just wake up honey” Alex tried to get through to you when all of a sudden you bolted upright, hands gripping the rails of the bed.
Alex quickly held your face in her hands, allowing your eyes to focus on her instead of darting around the room. “There we go, you’re safe y/n.”
“Alex…” When Alex turned to Kara’s voice, she followed her gaze to the bed rails, of which had been bent right where you were holding them.
You looked down and immediately pulled your hands back. They can’t know, they can’t know!
“Ah!” your hands flew up to cover your ears, every sound increasing until you could hear people down the street talking, people’s heartbeats, the wind…
“Hey, y/n, what’s wrong?” Alex tried to pry your hands off your ears,
“Too loud, make it stop!” Alex looked toward Lena and Kara who both looked equally confused and concerned.
Your gaze was frantic, you couldn’t breathe, couldn’t focus.
Alex motioned to Kara and Lena, pulling down the rails of your bed and wrapping her arms around you. The other two followed suit, Lena sat moved to sit behind you and Kara on the other side from Alex, so you were now held all around by three strong pairs of arms. You felt your heart rate begin to decrease as you breathed deeper.
When they felt as though you had settled, Kara and Alex let go of you. Lena, however, stayed behind you and let you lay your exhausted body against her chest.
There was a period of silence, Alex didn’t stop looking at your charts, trying to figure out what happened. Kara stood biting her thumbnail, silently conversing with Lena as she sat behind you combing your hair back.
“What’s wrong with me?” Lena didn’t quite hear you,
“What’s that, sweetheart?”
“What’s wrong with me?”
Alex heard and sighed, sitting on the edge of your bed.
“I don’t know, y/n. But I promise you, we will do everything we can to figure this out, okay?”
You nodded, leaning back against Lena again, trying to allow yourself to be cared for as her nails scratched your scalp lightly while her fingers resumed threading through your hair.
Kara suddenly got a concentrated look on her face,
“Alex, there’s a disturbance downtown-”
“Go, we’ll be okay.” Kara nodded at her sister before changing into her suit and speeding off.
Alex then decided to give you some more medicine so you would sleep again – she said it was to give you some rest, but as soon as you nodded off, she pulled out a needle.
“What are you thinking Alex?” Lena asked, watching as her friend drew blood from your arm.
“I’m going to run a couple other tests, DNA tests.” Lena furrowed her brows.
“Why? Didn’t you do that when we brought her in?”
“I did, but I didn’t test for alien DNA.”

Just Out Of Reach
My exams are finally over so have some touch-starved!Nagisa
Pairing: Nagisa x 3-E
AO3 LINK
Shiota Nagisa was a loner. He always had been for as long as he could remember.
When he was in elementary school, he was the weird kid - the strange girl-boy that hardly talked and no one could understand. His male classmates thought that he was too girly to take part in their games or join their conversations and whilst his female classmates didn’t mind his appearance that much, they knew better than to associate with him lest they too fall victim to the taunts and sneers that followed him everywhere, or the relentless bullying that inconvenienced him every breaktime. However, he didn’t mind - friends were a luxury he couldn’t afford anyway (his mother didn’t approve of him spending time out of the apartment, away from her). He would have his own fun by sitting himself down in his school’s library and bury his head in a book, getting lost in worlds that weren’t mean, or cold, or judgemental. Or he’d sit on a bench in the school playground, homemade lunch in hand, and observe his peers hug and high five and laugh together, whilst ignoring the strange pang of something that would curl in his stomach, wanting more than ever for something he could never have.
Even during his first year of Junior High, when he met the red haired genius of a delinquent called Karma, he didn’t let himself indulge in what normal friends would do. Sure, he felt comfortable around the first friend he’d ever had (though the unnatural comfort was often overshadowed by the awe and admiration that he was allowed in the company of someone as brilliant as Akabane Karma) but Karma had his own walls, his own issues and lack of trust, so there was always that unspoken distance between them, that slight tenseness that lingered between every (very) rare arm that was slung over his shoulder. Though they walked side by side, it was never hand in hand. Though they spent every free minute together there were never any fist bumps or high fives or hugs (Nagisa wondered if Karma even knew what hugs were). Karma kept to himself and so did he - they both had boundaries that the other respected.
Until, Karma left. And he was alone again.
And as much as he said that he didn’t mind it - as much as he told himself that he was used to it ever since he woke up that one day and his father was nowhere to be found, the shouts and screams of his parents having their nth argument ringing in his ears even though his house was pitch quiet for once - it hurt. So when he was sent to E-Class with his head hung low and the voices of his former classes whispering their disgust trailing after him, he looked at the grenade in his hand and knew that he had nothing left to lose.
(So why did Koro-Sensei save him? And why did it feel so good? )
(And why did that mucus-like membrane shrouding him make his chest heat up with a feeling he’s never felt before?)
It was during their lunch break when it happened.
Nagisa was sitting by cross-legged at the base of a tree, reading an article about an upcoming superhero flick, whilst a group of his classmates were throwing, hitting and bouncing a ball in a game that Yada had called ‘don’t let the ball touch the ground’ but Kimura dubbed ‘the floor is lava for the ball and not us’ (he’ll let the jury decide which title was better) when he heard some rustling above him followed by groans.
“Okajima,” Maehara whined, “you hit it too high.”
“I’m sorry okay,” Okajima said, “I didn’t mean to get it stuck in some branch.”
“Don’t worry,” Yada smiled at him, “I’m sure that we can get it down if we stand on each others shoulders or something.”
“I don’t know,” Kataoka frowned. She looked up, making sure to cover her eyes from the sun, at the cursed branch, “it’s pretty high up. It’s safer for us to go and get a ladder.”
“No need,” Nagisa said. Unbeknownst to them, the moment Nagisa had gotten whiff of what had happened, he jumped up and, as silent as a serpent, leaped nimbly from branch to branch until he reached the one with the ball. He carefully plucked it from where it was nestled in a groove before making his way back down again, all just before Kataoka spoke. He threw it into her hands.
“What the- how the hell did you even do that?” Maehara’s jaw was dropped, frantically looking between the ball and the branch it was (he swore) a second ago.
“How did no one even see him?” Okajima whispered.
“Thank you, Nagisa,” Kurahashi beamed with the intensity of a thousand suns and threw her arms around him in one of her famous bear hugs, laughing in that usual bubbly way she always does. Nagisa freezes mid-flinch, almost petrified at the sudden contact. An unfamiliar warmth starts to spread across his chest. It was nice and almost comforting, drowning him with bright yellows and gentle goldens - making him feel like he was special. It took everything in him to not melt into it, a keening noise stuck at the base of his throat.
When his mother touches him, he feels the sharp talons of her nails digging into his skin. When she pecks his cheek or forehead, he has to stop himself from wincing at the way cyanide seems to burn him where her lips leave. In all honesty, he’d rather the sharp slaps and objects flying at him, at least those forms of pain where only physical and didn’t leave a confusing sense of dichotomy where his emotions that craved for the positive contact to linger battled where his fight-or-flight survival instincts screamed at him to scrub every single atom of her off of him. Touch was something he could neither afford nor understand.
If he wanted warmth, he’d wrap himself up in scarves and throw on soft jumpers; if he wanted to feel safe, he’d make sure to do everything he can to not trigger his mother into another eruption; if he wanted contact then he’d find his old plushies buried deep in the confines of his closet and embrace them in hopes that it would be enough. For him, the closest he’s ever gotten to feeling that void in his chest was when words of affirmation would wash over him (it’s no secret to anyone that compliments can render him unable to function)(but can you blame him when compliments to him are as rare as painite?).
When Kurahashi let go of him to go regale Yada with stories from a nature documentary she watched the night prior, he’s still stock still, dumbstruck, from that momentary embrace. He wanted her to come back so that he could feel it again. He wanted to feel her arms around his body like a safe little cocoon. He wanted to submit to that sunshine-like comfort and never get out of it. He craved that warmth so much it hurt him - why did it hurt so much?
It made him feel so wanted . And lov-
Is this why people hold hands all the time?
Later that night, he crushed one of his stuffed animals against his chest as he wrapped his arms around his body. He wondered why his pillowcase had wet stains on it when he woke up the next day.
(He ignored the answer that gnawed him at the back of his mind)
The second time he felt it was during a ‘completely necessary class bonding sleepover extravaganza’ (as Fuwa had put it) at the Nakamura household. With the blonde’s parents out of the country to visit her older brother, she had her entire house to herself - a house that was miraculously large enough to house twenty-seven teenage assassins in training (as well the phones that contained ‘Mobile Ritsu’).
“I still don’t understand why we can’t watch anime,” Fuwa pouted from her position on the kitchen island, her One-Piece-themed-socks-clad feet kicking up and down as she took another spoonful from the bowl of snickerdoodle cookie dough she had nicked from Hara and swallowed it, “it’s practically a staple for every good sleepover.”
“Because, Fuwa,” Nakamura drawled in reply, her own hands busy pouring popcorn into bowls, “none of us want to see you go full otaku during our relaxing evening.”
“It’s nothing against you Fuwa,” Nagisa had cut in quickly, having had made eye-contact with Isogai and Hara as the three of them were washing and drying the baking equipment they were using (“‘You know we have a dishwasher right?” Nakamura had called in amusement) and their combined parental instincts had deemed it necessary to extinguish anything that could potentially start something (and knowing this class, mountains can be made out of molehills as quickly as Koro-Sensei can fly from continent to continent), “it’s just that we think it might be a good idea to have more variety tonight. Next time we have a class movie night, you can choose anything you want.”
“I’m holding you to that, Shiota,” Fuwa pointed her spoon at him with narrowed eyes before sliding herself off the table and sauntering off towards the living room.
“She’s not going to get sick, eating all of that raw cookie dough, is she?” Nakamura asked, staring at the doorway.
Hara smiled at her, “don’t worry, we made the dough edible.” She gave Nagisa a head pat with a slightly soapy hand, “you can finish with that bowl you’re drying and help me bring these trays to the living room, ‘kay Nagisa?”
Nagisa nodded bashfully, trying to hide the redness that blossomed over his cheeks in reaction to Hara’s hand making contact with his scalp.
"What do you mean 'we should watch a horror movie'?" Isogai asked his friend.
"Exactly that class prez," Maehara grinned at the brunette, "you can't have a sleepover without a few screams."
"Nor can you have one without anime but here we are," Fuwa grumbled to herself.
"But what if people get scared?" Isogai asked, as always being the Ikeman he is and thinking about others. Bless him.
"That's the point," Nakamura chirped, "it's the perfect bonding exercise. Nothing can bring together a group of rag-tag misfits like fear."
 "But-"
"Don't worry," Nakamura said, "we have Karma and Hazama with us. I can assure that whatever we see on the television will be nowhere nearly as scary as them."
"True that," the class sighed as the two students in question gave eerie, self-satisfied smirks.
"Not to mention that we're all assassins in training," Okano said, "no evil spirit or crazy murderer would stand a chance against us."
"And if they do, we can just sacrifice Terasaka to them," Hazama piped up, not even looking up from her book.
 "HEY! WHAT THE HELL?!"
"Yeah, Hazama," Karma smirked, "as if they would even want him."
 "OI AKABANE, WHAT'S YOUR DEAL?!"
"Hey, Nagisa," Kayano turned to her friend as Karma stuck his tongue out at Terasaka, "what kind of horror movies do you like?"
“I don’t know,” Nagisa replied, idly tracing the outlines of the cartoon sushi pieces that patterned his pyjama bottoms, “I’ve never watched any horror movies so I wouldn’t know what is good.”
Maehara grinned at them from under the hood of his Pikachu onesie, “Then have no fear, Nagisa. As a movie connoisseur-”
“I thought that title was reserved for me?” Mimura raised his hand with an arched eyebrow.
“-I would be more than happy to educate you, my young padawan-”
“-I’m pretty sure he’s older than you,” Okano pointed out.
“On the art of Horror Movie Binge-athons,” Maehara declared, ignoring the interruptions and pointing at the blunette in a very Fuwa-esque way.
So that was how Nagisa found himself on one of the couches, two scream-fests later, sandwiched between Karma and Sugino, watching the end credits of The Ring. From his perch, he watched in interest at the horror-struck faces of his classmates below.
“Dude,” Kimura breathed out in fear when the screen turned black, a shaky hand attempting to comfort a very visibly distressed Okajima, who had the athlete in a bone-crushing hug from behind as he hid behind him, “I am never going to answer a phone again.”
After a full ten seconds of silence, the smartphone that was lying in front of him lit up, and the Sonic theme song ‘Gotta Go Fast’ cut through the air like a knife. Kimura jumped about a foot in the air, screaming, whilst the others around him did the same. Muramatsu and Yoshida, clung tighter onto Hazama, yelling about how they were too young to die whilst Okajima and Okano began praying to the gods.
“Karma, stop it,” Nagisa sighed without even looking at the redhead next to him. When Karma smirked and ended the call on his phone, thus terminating the ringing, he turned and raised an unamused eyebrow at a snickering Nakamura who was filming the entire scene on her own phone. The blonde winked at him and raised a peace sign.
“I know what we should watch next,” Yoshida said after a while and took the remote. He began to scroll through the movie suggestions on the screen, “Coraline.”
“Isn’t ‘Coraline’ a kids’ movie?” Kataoka furrowed her eyebrows as she eyed the cartoonish movie poster on the television.
Coraline was not a kids’ movie. It was a horrific abomination of nightmare fuel dolled up with pretty colours and a talking cat. At least with the other films they had watched that night, he was able to stand - jump scares don’t really work on someone that’s constantly on edge and no CGI generated creature of the supernatural could terrify him as the very real harpy that he shares a roof with. At most he stiffens up or just trains his eyes onto the kernels of popcorn that get sent flying whenever Okajima gets particularly frightened. He usually just tries to deconstruct the story from a logical standpoint, making sure to point out to himself the plot-holes to enhance the fact that it’s nothing more than fiction (instead of making these comments out loud like Sugaya and end up having a brigade of throw pillows assaulted onto him). However watching The Other Mother, who spoke with a honey-sweet tone but had that distinct aura of ‘threat threat threat’ made him feel more chills than watching the disfigured Samara Morgan crawl out of a television and murder people and whilst the revelation of her true colours weren’t completely unpredictable, it didn’t and the fear and acid crawling up his stomach.
‘You may come out... when you've learned to be a loving daughter!’
‘How dare you disobey your mother!’
It was after watching that vile woman drag Coraline into that dark chamber and locking her inside it when he couldn’t take it. His frozen facade and almost petrified posture just broke. He lurched, fumbling for the blanket draped over his legs and pulled it up so that he could cover his head and buried himself under it. With his knees drawn up under the covers, he focused on controlling his breathing and trying to steady his shaking hands and starting-to-blur eyes in an attempt to push away the unpleasant flashbacks hissing around in his head like a viper. Suddenly out of nowhere, he felt a hand gently circle his wrist. He tensed, heart rate speeding up in a panic, before his skin registered the familiar feel of polyester - the material of Sugino’s red sweatbands (wait, does he even wear them to sleep? ). When he had physically relaxed, the- Sugino’s hand slowly and carefully - giving him ample time to pull away - moved his own and away from his legs and then interlocked his fingers between his. The skin on skin contact at the base of his fingers had caused the same warmth he had felt with Kurahashi spreading across his entire arm, stopping at his chest and swirling around like a mixture of comfort and elation, like he had just drank a cup of steaming milk tea. He steadily curled his own fingers downwards, letting the tips press down against the baseball-lover’s knuckles. The only response he got was a tight squeeze in return - not hard enough to sting but still grounding in a sense.
 Okay.
He was okay, he can do this.
It was during the climax of the film, when Coraline confronts that button-for-eyes-wearing she-devil, when Nagisa abandoned all inhibitions and pulled on the hand intertwined with his own, simultaneously pulling Sugino down and bringing himself up so that he could wrap his arms around the black-haired boy. His uncharacteristic actions even shocked himself but all of his usual anxiety’s of forcing his problems on others were pushed back by the voice in his head saying ‘safe safe safe get closer closer ’. With his eyes squeezed shut so tight they almost hurt, he felt something wet roll down his cheek and so he tightened the hold he had on his best friend. Sugino reciprocated, one of his own hands gently cupping the back of his head, fingers burying past silken blue hair, so that he could very lightly bring the other’s face closer and tuck it underneath his chin. Now normally, Nagisa would have combusted with embarrassment at being so close to another student, especially in such a public setting like this, but right now he felt like nothing more than some primal urge begging him to soak in as much of that embrace as possible. To be selfish for once and just stay as close as he can even if it means he dies there. To let himself be vulnerable for a change. The movie, those memories they all washed away and he felt nothing but safe….
The next morning he woke up with his head on someone’s shoulder, a fluffy blanket raised upto his chin. He blinked the haziness out of his eyes to find himself in front of inky locks.
“You alright there, Nagisa?” Sugino looked at him with a smile. Oh he was already up. That’s new.
Nagisa’s eyes widened, his face erupting with redness as the events of the previous night replayed in his inner-theatre like those epic fail compilations Karma likes to laugh at. He jumped back to the other end of the couch, as far away from Sugino as possible.
“Oh god, Sugino, I am so sorry,” Nagisa whispered as loudly as he could without waking up his still snoozing classmates, “what happened last night was so weird and I put you in such an awkward position and I’m super sorry I swear that will never happen again and you must’ve been so embarrassed honestly you should've just pushed me off when I fell asleep I really wouldn’t have minded this was so weird and-”
“Nagisa, chill,” Sugino moved closer and placed a hand on the rambling boy’s shoulder, the corner of his mouth twitching upwards with slight amusement, “it’s cool. It’s normal for people to get scared during horror movies - it’s kind of the reason why they were made, you know. Besides if you looked really distressed and if I couldn’t do anything to help you then why are we even friends.”
 “Yeah but-”
“No buts,” Sugino cut in, “you’re always ready to help others so don’t be surprised to find otu that others want to help you.”
Nagisa sighed. He looked up at the other boy with a slight blush, “well, um, thank you. For that. It was really nice of you.”
Sugino’s hand squeezed on his shoulder and he felt that familiar thrill shoot down his arm as the taller smiled, “no problem, Nagisa.”
(“Next time we decide to do a bonding activity,” Fuwa says during breakfast as she’s munching through a honey dripping pancake, “we should all go camping.”
Collectively the class shuddered, their minds being filled with visions of Fuwa holding up a chainsaw on full speed and running around like a mad woman, of fire enveloping a forest and demolishing a once peaceful campsite and dark grey mushroom clouds puffing out like an ashy eruption, “no thank you.”)
For some reason he finds himself in these sort of situations more and more. Like when he feels himself clinging closer to Okano when she bridal carries him up the mountain after he had injured his leg during a training exercise (which is interesting because normally being in such an unmasculine position would make his insecurities flare up like crazy); or when his arms tighten around Karma so much that it feels like their bodies are going to fuse together when the red head piggy-back carries him during a race; or when he just sighs in contentment when Maehara slings him over his shoulder instead of flailing around like he usually would when the brown-eyed boy declared that he was studying too hard and ‘offered’ to take him karaoke singing with everyone else.
In the back of his mind, he feels like the amount of affectionate touches he receives have almost quadrupled in size -  there hasn’t been a day where he hasn’t gotten either a head pat, friendly noogie or side hug. There was even a tickling incident that led to his male classmates dogpiling him (because in 3-E the A in PDA can also mean aggression).
No one comments on it though.
It’s almost like Irina-Sensei’s comment about the students of 3-E having ‘some creepy hive mind’ is actually true.
(That comment actually lead to the class planning via group chat to speak in monotonic unison in front of her for an entire half an hour just to mess with her. It worked.)
“I still don’t understand why you people like drinking this leaf juice,” Fuwa scrunched her nose at the ceramic cup in her hand. Due to the pleasant weather, Kanzaki, Kayano and Okuda decided to have a tea party and Nagisa being the tea lover that he was was more than happy to accept their invitation.
“Hey,” Kayano glared at her, making a shooing gesture with one of her hands, “Group four only.”
“Kayano,” Nagisa said firmly, “she can stay if she wants.”
 “But she’s disrespecting the tea.”
Nagisa shook his head and sighed whilst Kanzaki giggled into her cup.
“Listen Fuwa,” Kayano rounded on the female otaku, “whilst I stand by the statement that pudding is the closest thing to perfection humanity has ever created and I would sell this entire class for a lifetime supply of pudding cups without a second thought (“Say what now?” Nagisa backtracked), a cup of nice warm tea can truly heal your soul. It’s science.”
“That is true,” Okuda piped up, gently pushing her glasses up, “a cup of hot anything in your hands mimics human warmth which is said to have calming properties. So it basically means that warm drinks can mimic the need for human care and touch.”
‘ Well ,’ Nagisa blinked, thinking back to the mountain of tea bags that reside in his bedroom’s dustbin, ‘ that explains a lot. ’
“So if you guys ever feel too single,” Fuwa laughed and gave them double finger guns, “you know what to do.”
Whilst the rest of his company gave responding giggles, Nagisa felt a tug on his elbow and let it go limp to allow the greenette sitting next to him to tug it downwards. When he felt her link her pinky with his he turned to look at her to see a sunny beam directed straight at him.
 And he smiles back.
 Because he’s not alone anymore.
