You know what I need? I need the Marvel time-travel trope, but everyone goes back to the 40s.
(I say everyone, I mean the Avengers pre-Infinity War.)
Because everyone says Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes are men out of time (and they’re not technically wrong). But I want to see the Avengers (sans Steve and Bucky) getting sent back in time by some wizard or a freak Asgardian lightning storm or something, and poof, they’re back in the 40s, right smack in the middle of the war.
I want the Avengers to witness what life was like during the war, hiding in bomb shelters and seeing the after effects of the world crawling out of the Great Depression and hurtling into the second World War in twenty years.
Life when Steve really was the weirdest thing science ever created. When he was desperately needed and internationally adored. Because all of the Avengers have PTSD, but Steve and Bucky went through World War II and got spit back out into the 20th and 21st centuries, and that’s a whole different category of PTSD and trauma.
I want the Avengers to actually meet the survivors of Azzano, when Steve marched into the massive Nazi base and saved hundreds of soldiers, part because he could and part because he was desperate to save his best friend, and didn’t think twice about it.
I want the Avengers to see Steve and Bucky thrive. I want them to witness Steve and Bucky with the Howling Commandos. Steve’s first team. I want them to see how Steve and Bucky lived, what life was like, because it was drastically different than the modern world.
I want the Avengers to witness firsthand life on a military base. I want Tony to have to look his father in the eye and pretend he doesn’t know who he is, but get to see all the good his father did because all he remembers is his father being an asshole. How much Steve really did care about Howard (and that Bucky did, too, because Howard made weapons to keep Steve safe).
I want Natasha to see that just because she’s an assassin doesn’t mean she’s a bad person, because there were hundreds of military assassins and spies during the war that did bad things to get information.
I want them to hear about the Tesseract and learn that sometimes Steve’s intelligence should be taken seriously, because he has experience and knowledge that none of the other Avengers will ever have. (“You should have left it in the water.” “This is the guy my dad never shut up about?”)
I want them to see how much Steve loved Peggy, how she and Bucky were the only ones who saw him for who he really was, and realize how awful it must have been for him to come back and work for the organization she created after his death and have to live without her.
I want them to hide and watch as Past Steve screams as Past Bucky falls from the train. I want them to see Past Steve realize he can’t get drunk, and the only way he can cope is to kill the Red Skull and end HYDRA. To avenge his friend. I want them to realize that not only did Past Steve crash the plane for nothing, but that Steve knows, has to live with that knowledge for the rest of his life.
I want them to listen with Peggy as Past Steve realizes he’s going to have to crash the plane. I want them to hear the slight tremble in Past Steve’s voice as he talks about dancing with Peggy, believing he’ll never get the chance, and that he’s going to die alone in the freezing cold ocean. I want them to not get the change to promise him that he’ll survive. I want them to hear the sudden static that cuts off Past Steve’s voice, and the heavy silence that comes after it.
I want them to see the world mourn for Captain America, who died just months before the war ended.
And then I want them to come back to the 21st century and see. I want them to see the way Steve’s eyes linger on pictures of Peggy and Howard, see the rows of records from the 30s and 40s in a whole new light, see rows of 30s-style clothes in his closet that he hardly ever wears because a lot of people will make jabs about it, see the way he always keeps Bucky in his sight, hugs him just a little bit tighter than he hugs everyone else.
I want them to see the bags under his and Bucky’s eyes when they have nightmares. I want Sam to quietly show them Steve’s list, and see that every line on every page is filled because he missed so much. I want them to find two more little books filled up just as much. I want them to realize how lost Steve still is despite how much he’s adapted.
I want them to see the subtle military training still ingrained in Steve’s bones, because any and every war was horrible, but World War II was something else entirely, and so was desperation that existed within the soldiers and the people. I want them to see Steve’s recklessness of jumping out of planes without a parachute, the way his eyes always scan the area when he enters a room, watching ever little detail and listening for any sound that might indicate danger. How he is always, always, on alert, even when he seems relaxed.
I want them to understand why Steve was so against the Sokovia Accords. It wasn’t because he wanted the power to do what he thought was best; it was because he was afraid of the consequences of having too many restrictions. Because even with international laws and the damn Geneva Convention, the Nazis still destroyed half the world, and decades later Nazi HYDRA was still carrying out their mission that Steve sacrificed his life for. Steve was a human experiment. The Serum was a biochemical weapon. The military broke the rules to protect the greater good, and Steve knew that. The war would have gone very differently without him.
Whether he was right or wrong about the Accords, after what Steve experienced, I want the Avengers finally understand where he was coming from. Why he was so afraid of strict regulations.
I want Tony to finally fully understand the significance of Steve giving up his shield in Siberia.
Why he was so determined to protect Bucky from the world. Not just because he was his best friend, or because it was the right thing to do. But also because Bucky was the only thing Steve physically had left of his life before the crash, save for his dog tags, and he was scared of what that would mean if Steve lost him.
Steve Rogers has so much trauma that Marvel completely ignored. They focused on Tony’s and Bucky’s and Natasha’s trauma; and that’s great, that’s important; but so much of Steve’s moral character doesn’t get explained because it gets glossed over with the excuse that he’s “Mr Good and Righteous.” And that’s true, but that’s just scratching the surface.
He’s Mr. Good and Righteous for a reason, and it doesn’t get talked about enough.

Mission
Tumblr media
Part 1, Part 3
Pairing: Steve Rogers x android!reader
Word Count: 1438
Steve, lost in his thoughts, persistently punched the boxing equipment set up within the gymnasium. You, in an attempt to aid Steve in adapting to the modern world, proposed a daily regimen. Mirror a facet of his old life while incorporating education, social interaction, technology familiarization, culture exposure, and self-reflection. You handled Steve’s circumstances with care. It was a delicate situation. While he slept, you thoroughly and extensively searched through scientific journals and articles to be able to assist him to the best of your ability.
The doors of the gymnasium swung open, capturing your attention without disrupting Steve. He remained immersed in contemplation. You observed the individual meticulously. The man wore a black eyepatch over his left eye and a black leather trench coat. Head of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division (S.H.I.E.L.D), Nick Fury, tracked Steve’s movements as sand spilled onto the floor.
Steve took a few breathers, reveling in his convoluted feelings, before carrying and hooking another bag. He soon began to punch the bag.
“Trouble sleeping?”
“I slept for seventy years, sir. I think I’ve had my fill.” Steve did not let Fury’s intrusion interrupt his drill nor did you see it fit to interrupt their conversation. Social interaction was important, and Steve was lacking in that department anyhow.
“Then you should be out, celebrating, seeing the world.”
Steve stops punching and walks over to the bench, unraveling the tape off his hands. He sits down, “I went under, the world was at war, I wake up, they say we won. They didn’t say what we lost.”
“We’ve made some mistakes along the way. Some very recently.”
“You here with a mission, sir?”
“I am.” Fury gives you an unfamiliar look before directing the conversation towards you, “Turn off MODEL AX400.”
“I am sorry Director Fury; I only respond to Captain Rogers.”
“Steve.” He corrected you, “And [Reader] will not be turned off. Anywhere I go, they go as well.” Steve refused to refer to you as a machine or a thing. To him, you were a person without the need to eat, sleep, and breathe. You had your own thoughts; therefore, allowing yourself to make choices for yourself. You did not think he understood how your programming worked, however, it was on one of the schedules for your technology familiarization course.
“Captain Rogers, I think it would be in the best interest of the government if...” Fury tried to find the appropriate language to direct the conversation towards national security, “unauthorized technology didn’t get their hands on highly classified documents. I’d rather these files not get into the hands of enemies if MODEL AX400 was to be captured or reprogrammed.”
Steve ignored Fury’s suggestion and proceeded to browse through the files of Hydra’s projects. “Hydra’s secret weapon.”
Fury sighed knowing he had lost, “Howard Stark fished that out of the ocean when he was looking for you. He thought what we think, the Tesseract could be the key to unlimited sustainable energy. That’s something the world solely needs.”
“Who took it from you?”
“He’s called Loki. He’s not from around here. There’s a lot we’ll have to bring you up to speed on if you’re in. The world has gotten even stranger than you already know.”
Steve felt he knew how strange the world as become. His caretaker looked human but was made from wires. Your skin and mannerisms felt real but were constructed to perform to perfection. How stranger could the world have become? “At this point, I doubt anything would surprise me.”
“Ten bucks says you’re wrong. There’s a debriefing package waiting for you back at your apartment. Keep it away from MODEL AX400.” As Steve readies to leave, you gather the rest of his things. You hand him his water bottle as you both begin to head out. “Is there anything you can tell us about the Tesseract that we ought to know now?”
“You should have left it in the ocean.”
As Steve spent the rest of the day reviewing the debriefing package at the apartment, you began to make a hearty meal for him in preparation for the mission. He needed to regain the calories he spent plunging all of his energy into the gym equipment. Usually, you would teach him a new recipe as it has become routine for the two of you to cook together. You understood that he was busy working.
While Steve did not agree with Fury’s statement about you, he still kept the files away. Not like he really tried, you understood. You could not defy him even if you wanted to. “Do you want me to prepare for a prolong leave, Captain Rogers?”
“Steve,” He corrected you once again, “And yes, it would be greatly appreciated. I’m sorry, we couldn’t continue our usual schedule.” It felt wrong of him to disrupt the routine the two of you have established. He didn’t know he would get a mission so soon after his rescue. He thought he would have more time adjusting to the modern world.
You gave him what seemed to be a tender smile, “No apologies needed. It will be moved towards another time.” You went back to stirring before moving around the apartment. You had made it warmer and more personalized. Before it was cold with the walls bare and nothing to signify a person was truly living in it.
The next day Steve and you were transferred to one of SHIELD’s quinjets. As soon it landed on top of the runway, the two of you and Agent Coulson walked down the ramp. The man was obviously starstruck the entire way, blatantly staring at Steve with heart eyes and awe, but not speaking a world towards him.
“Agent Romanoff. Captain Rogers.”
“Ma’am?”
“Hi.” Her attention mildly glanced in your direction for a moment before it turned towards Coulson, “They need you on the bridge. Face time.”
“See you there.” Coulson walked away, leaving Steve and yourself with the assassin.
“There was quite the buzz around here, finding you in the ice. I thought Coulson was gonna swoon. Did he ask you to sign his Captain America trading cards yet?”
Steve was rather confused, “Trading cards?”
“They’re vintage, he’s very proud.”
You noticed a man walking towards the three of you, fidgeting due to his nervousness, maneuvering around people as they block his way. Steve notices him as well, “Dr. Banner.” They shake hands.
“Oh, yeah. Hi. They told me you’d be coming.” Bruce noticed you in the background of Steve and Agent Romanoff “Who’s this?”
“This is [Reader], they were assigned to help me adjust.” Steve mentioned.
“It’s nice to meet you.” He gave you a timid smile, a smile you returned.
“It’s nice to meet you too, Dr. Banner. I found your research to be fascinating.” You had come across his available roster of scientific journals and research upon searching for topics to bring up in your refresher course for Steve. While you would not go in-depth, unless Steve wanted to, you thought reviewing the basics would be beneficial for him.
“Word is you can find the cube.” Steve interjected.
“Is that the only word on me?”
“Only word I care about.”
Dr. Banner takes in the sentiment, “Must be strange for you, all of this.”
“Well, this is actually kind of familiar.”
“Gentlemen, you may wanna step inside in a minute. It’s gonna get a little hard to breath.” The runway begins to shake, puzzling the two men.
“Is this a submarine?”
“Really?” Dr. Banner questioned, “They want me in a submerged pressurized metal container?” All four of you moved towards the edge of the ‘runway’ and saw four large lift fans mount on the sides as it is lifted into the air. Steve is mesmerized by the technology.
“Oh, no. This is much worse.”
Steve, Banner and you walked through the gleaming bridge of the helicarrier.
“Gentlemen.” Steve silently handed Fury 10 bucks as he was indeed surprised. Fury walked towards Dr. Banner, extending his hand, hoping the doctor would shake it. “Doctor, thank you for coming.”
“Thanks for asking nicely. So, uh...” Banner questioned, “how long am I staying?”
“Captain Rogers, why don’t you leave your machine elsewhere while we discuss this privately.” This caused Banner to silently question the man as there was no machine Steve was with.
“[Reader] why don’t you go sit down while we address the details of the mission.” Steve gently stated. He did not want to argue with Fury in front of another.
“Of course, Captain Rogers.” You nodded, “Let me know if I can help in any way.”

Steve was furious when he walked into the room to find Tony actually poking Banner with an electrical prod. Steve couldn't believe his eyes - was this really Howard's son!? Someone this...irresponsible!?
"Hey! Are you nuts?" Steve nearly snatched the rod from Tony altogether lest the man wanted to try again for the Hulk. At this point, Steve wouldn't put it behind Tony to do it.
It was even more infuriating to see Tony calm as ever, as if he hadn't just tried something dangerously stupid. He was simply studying Banner for any sign that he might be turning green soon. "You really have got a lid on it, haven't you?" He all but circled Banner. "What's your secret? Mellow jazz? Bongo drums? Huge bag of weed?"
Steve shook his head. "Is everything a joke to you!?"
"Funny things are," Tony shrugged lightly.
"Threatening the safety of everyone on this ship isn't funny!" Steve took a breath in and realized his words and how they sounded in Banner's perspective. "No offense, doctor," he offered Banner an apologetic smile. He knew Banner was probably trying his best to remain himself but the truth was, as sad as it was, that if he turned into the Hulk then they were all near goners.
Banner, however, took no actual offence. He merely smiled back. "No, it's alright. I wouldn't have come aboard if I couldn't handle pointy things."
Tony still wasn't convinced. "You're tiptoeing, big man. You need to strut."
Steve once again looked at Tony like he was crazy, and he was beginning to suspect that it was the truth. "And you need to focus on the problem, Mr. Stark."
"You think I'm not? Why did Fury call us and why now? Why not before? What isn't he telling us? I can't do the equation unless I have all the variables."
"You think Fury's hiding something?"
"He's a spy. Captain, he's the spy. His secrets have secrets." Tony jerked a thumb over at Banner without even looking at the man. "It's bugging him too, isn't it?"
Banner struggled to speak when all eyes turned on him. He wasn't expecting to be thrown into that conversation. "Uh...I just wanna finish my work here and…"
Steve could hear the indecision in Banner's tone, ultimately making him ask if he agreed with Tony. "Doctor?"
Banner hesitated for another minute before realizing that if anyone would be trustworthy enough to keep that secret, it would be Steve. " 'A warm light for all mankind, Loki's jab at Fury about the cube."
"I heard it…"
"Well, I think that was meant for you," Banner pointed at Tony, much to the latter's genuine surprise. "Even if Barton didn't post that all over the news."
"The Stark Tower? That big ugly…" Steve trailed off once he was subjected to Tony's look but the remainder of the words still came out a few seconds later. "...building in New York?" It was a bit flashy for his taste when Seren first showed it to him and even now, his opinion had not changed.
"It's powered by Stark Reactors, self-sustaining energy source. That building will run itself for what, a year?" Banner asked curiously.
"That's just the prototype. I'm kind of the only name in clean energy right now," Tony said off-handedly, far too casual.
"So, why didn't SHIELD bring him in on the Tesseract project?" Banner still motioned to Tony while he addressed Steve, admittedly making a good point. "I mean, what are they doing in the energy business in the first place?"
Steve wouldn't deny that it was a good question to ask, not that he would like to see anyone working with the Tesseract. Right now, he hated that Seren had been forced to take care of that thing while he was in the dark about it. That thing was dangerous enough when left alone and they placed it so close to Seren and everyone else. "I wouldn't know, Seren didn't tell me but...I could ask Chloe—"
"You really think Megamind is going to tell you anything?" Tony rolled his eyes, initially missing the glare Steve sent his way. "She's embedded with S.H.I.E.L.D., as is Agent Soul in case you didn't get the memo."
"Stop calling them that! Chloe doesn't like it and as for Seren, it's offensive."
Tony still didn't see the problem. "Why?" He shrugged. "It's a literal description of their powers. Winters is from the mind and Soul runs on star matter. That little star on her neck?" He made a gesture at his own neck for reference. "That's the mark of her people. She's an alien."
"She's as much a human as you and I are," snapped Steve. He could see the reaction on Banner's face at the revelation and he was more than ready to take Banner and Tony to defend Seren if need be.
"Well—" Tony sniffed, "—maybe not so much you, huh?"
Steve's face fell flat. He could care less what Tony thought of him and his own unique biology but he wouldn't let Tony keep calling out Seren the way he was, especially when Seren wasn't even there to defend herself. "You need to leave the nicknames behind, Stark. Seriously."
Tony rolled his eyes, groaning dramatically. "God, I didn't get this much heat from Winters who, by the way, is as shady as this entire organization is."
Steve groaned. "Is that what we're doing, then? We're just going to insult one Agent after the other?"
"I'm not insulting anyone, merely calling out what I see and know." It was honestly irritating to Tony that none of them could see what he saw and they were all just brushing his comments off. He said things for a reason. "But you know what? Pretty soon, I'm going to know everything once my decryption programmer finishes breaking into all of SHIELD's secure files."
That made Steve stop altogether, as it did to Banner. "I'm sorry, did you say...?"
"Jarvis has been running it since I hit the bridge. In a few hours we'll know every dirty secret SHIELD has ever tried to hide." Tony held out the bag of blueberries he picked up from the table. "Blueberry?"
Banner refrained from any berries and the conversation for a moment.
Steve couldn't help himself. Tony was turning out to be an insufferable version of the Starks. "Yet you're confused about why they didn't want you around?"
"An intelligence organization that fears intelligence? Historically, not possible." Tony dropped a few more berries into his mouth.
"I think Loki's trying to wind us up. This is a man who means to start a war, and if we don't stay focused, he'll succeed. We have orders, we should follow them."
Tony smiled as if he'd been waiting to hear that line, and perhaps he had been. "Following is not really my style."
Steve smiled wryly. "And you're all about style, aren't you?" His question struck Tony more than it would've to anyone else.
"Of the people in this room, which one is; A. wearing a spangly outfit, and B. not of use?"
Just as Steve was about to respond, Banner cut in, "Steve, tell me none of this smells a little funky to you?"
Of course there were a couple questions he had but Steve wasn't going to let anything cloud his mind in this mission. "Just find the cube," he told them and left the lab.
He bumped into Chloe a few corridors down (he may have gotten a little mixed up). "Anything from Loki?" he dared to be hopeful.
Chloe shook her head. "No. He's tight-lipped. Not even Seren knew."
Steve studied her expression. Against his better judgement, he suddenly asked, "Chloe, do you know what S.H.I.E.L.D. was planning on doing with the Tesseract?"
Chloe blinked. Steve hated that he'd asked her that but at the same time he really wanted to know the answer and much more if she would actually answer.
"No. But if it helps, it was also Seren's constant question. She was set to guard the Tesseract, just that. Nobody would ever tell her what the entire mission was about. It was top secret."
Steve thanked her for the answer. It coincided with Seren's behavior during the mission. And look at that, the mission had taken her away.
"I have to go see if Coulson has anything," Chloe mumbled, excusing herself.
Steve didn't bother trying to stop her. He'd seen her face and he could safely assume that she was telling the truth. Tony's words about her were not going to get into his head...Tony's other words about the Tesseract, however…
Steve started for the hull of the ship.

Chloe found Coulson and Thor in the briefing room looking at something on the computers. She soon recognized the picture of Jane Foster on the screen.
"...we moved Jane Foster. We've got an excellent observatory in Traunsee. She was asked to consult there very suddenly yesterday. Handsome fee, private plane, very remote. She'll be safe," Coulson was assuring Thor.
"Thank you," Thor said, "It's no accident Loki taking Erik Selvig. I dread what he plans for him once he's done. Erik is a good man." He met Chloe's gaze and felt for her as well. "The Lady of the stars...she has a better winning chance. She's strong."
Chloe nodded fervently. She had no doubt about Seren's strength. "It's because Seren's strong that I'm worried about what Loki's scepter did to her," she confessed. "How he managed to brainwash her. This isn't the first time we've dealt with brainwashing and Seren's never fallen like that."
"The scepter is embedded with a kind of power that's unique," Thor explained, "But it's not permanent. No brainwashing ever is. We will get her back."
Chloe hoped the same. "Thanks. Seren's sort of like my adopted sister too. Well, she adopted me but you get the idea. She would never hurt a fly and Loki made her shoot at us like she didn't even know us," Chloe said, feeling much more pain than she ever thought she'd feel — an anger that she never really experienced before. "I'm afraid of the reason why Loki took her away."
Thor agreed. Loki was precise and he only took certain people-the scientists, the agents...but a Celessian? That spoke of an army of his own. "I'm sorry," he said, knowing there was nothing else he could do at the moment. "Like I said, we'll find her. I know she kept her word and looked after Jane while I was gone."
Chloe managed to smile a bit. She peered around the Asgardian to see the screen where Jane's picture still was. "Yeah, Seren stayed with Jane and Selvig to continue the Foster Theory. She tried learning about your world too — Asgard? — from her grandmother. You really changed everything around here."
And yet somehow that didn't seem to bring Thor any joy. "They were better as they were," Thor said quietly, turning towards the glass window. "We pretend on Asgard that we're more advanced, but we...we come here battling like Bilchsteim."
Chloe and Coulson were in the same state of confusion.
"I'm sorry, like what?" Coulson asked.
"Bilchsteim? You know; huge, scaly, big antlers. You don't have those?" Thor was met with the same blank expressions. "They are repulsive, and they trample everything in their path. When I first came to earth, Loki's rage followed me here and your people paid the price. And now again. In my youth I courted war."
"War hasn't started yet," Fury walked into the room, "You think you can make Loki tell us what the Tesseract is?"
"I do not know. Loki's mind is far afield, it's not just power he craves, it's vengeance upon me. There's no pain that would prize his need from him."
" A lot of guys think that, until the pain stops."
Thor met Fury's gaze. "What are you asking me to do?"
"I'm asking. What are you prepared to do?"
"Loki is a prisoner."
"Then why do I feel like he's the only person on this boat that wants to be here?"
It was an uncomfortable question that everyone had been asking themselves without the courage to speak it out loud.
~ 0 ~
Night turned into morning and when Fury went to check in on the others in the lab, he found no work to be done. Banner and Tony were just standing there. They were too quiet for Fury's taste.
"What are you doing, Mr. Stark?"
"Uh...kind of been wondering the same thing about you," Tony replied, smiling too tightly as well.
"You're supposed to be locating the Tesseract, in case you forgot."
"We are," assured Banner, "The model's locked and we're sweeping for the signature now. When we get a hit, we'll have the location within half a mile."
"And you'll get your cube back, no muss, no fuss." Tony suddenly looked away to his monitor and after a quick skim, he had a question in line for Fury. "What is PHASE 2?"
Before Fury could answer, if he would even have answered, Steve stormed into the room and dropped an assault rifle on the table with a loud thud. "PHASE 2 is SHIELD uses the cube to make weapons!" To say Steve was infuriated would be a deep understatement. It was like finding out everything he fought for didn't even matter in the end. S.H.I.E.L.D. was going ahead to do exactly what he worked so hard to keep away from the world. "Sorry, the computer was moving a little slow," he added for Tony.
Tony would give him the point this time, impressed by the tractics.
"Rogers, we gathered everything related to the Tesseract," Fury began to say, "This does not mean that we're…"
"I'm sorry, Nick." Tony moved the computer screen towards Fury so he, as well as everyone else, could see the major plans of weapons they were intending on building wiht the Tesseract's help. "What were you lying?"
"This is why you didn't tell Seren everything," Steve rounded on Fury. "Smart move because there is no way she would've been for this."
"Agent Soul would've done anything if it was required," Fury said, but Steve shook his head.
He came to know Seren, learn about her priorities and her intentions. Nothing about her would ever imply that she'd be for this type of plan. "You would have told her your plans from the start instead of keeping her in the dark," Steve said with all the certainty in the world. "I was wrong, director. The world hasn't changed a bit."
"Did you know about this?" Banner asked Natasha when she, Chloe and Thor walked in.
"What is that?" Chloe pointed to the weapon, eyeing it suspiciously.
"Does it look familiar, Megamind?" Tony's use of his nickname, for the moment, wasn't regarded as Chloe felt the accusation in his tone was far more important.
"Excuse me?"
"She doesn't know," Steve snapped at him but Tony merely hummed to voice his disagreement.
"Doesn't know what?" Chloe looked between them, expecting an answer that was coming much too slowly.
"Phase 2," Banner was the one to answer for her sake and Natasha's.
"What is Phase 2?" Natasha directly looked at Fury. If anyone would have the answers, it was him, but whether he would give the answer was still up in the air.
"PHASE 2 is S.H.I.E.L.D. uses the cube to make weapons," Steve glared at Fury as he answered the question.
"And how did you come across that, exactly?" Natasha lifted an eyebrow at him. She suspected the answer but she would rather hear it out loud that the golden boy had gone lurking through secret rooms. When Steve said nothing, she turned her attention to Banner. "You wanna think about removing yourself from this environment, doctor?"
A sour smile spread across Banner's face. "I was in Calcutta, I was pretty well removed."
"Loki's manipulating you!"
"And you've been doing what exactly?"
"You didn't come here because I bat my eyelashes at you."
"Yes, and I'm not leaving because suddenly you get a little twitchy. I'd like to know why SHIELD is using the Tesseract to build weapons of mass destruction!"
"Because of him," Fury pointed at Thor who was left stunned at how this entire conversation had suddenly steered towards him.
"Me?"
"Not too long ago we had a visitor from another planet who had a grudge match that leveled a small town. Our best agent wasn't able to stop it so we revisited the idea to expand the Avengers Initiative."
"My people want nothing but peace with your planet!" Thor argued.
"But you're not the only people out there, are you?" Fury challenged the Asgardian who couldn't answer that. "And, you're not the only threat. The world's filling up with people who can't be matched, they can't be controlled."
"Like you controlled the cube?" Steve chimed in sourly.
"Your work with the Tesseract is what drew Loki to it, and his allies," snapped Thor. "It is the signal to all the realms that the earth is ready for a higher form of war."
When the word 'war' was thrown into the conversation, Steve immediately inserted himself. "A higher form?" According to history, there had been no more World Wars and he would really like to keep it like that.
"You forced our hand. We had to come up with something!" Fury kept going despite having everyone against him.
"Nuclear deterrent," Tony said with a frown. "`Cause that always calms everything right down."
Fury side-glanced him at that comment. "Remind me again how you made your fortune, Stark?"
"I'm sure if he still made weapons, Stark would be neck deep—"
"Wait, wait! Hold on!" Tony cut Steve off and glared. "How is this now about me!?"
"I'm sorry, isn't everything!?"
"I thought humans were more evolved than this," remarked Thor amongst the arguments that unfolded between the group.
"Excuse me, did we come to your planet and blow stuff up?" Fury was right on him after that.
"Did you always give your champions such mistrust?"
"YOU'RE NOT MY CHAMPION!"
"Are you boys really that naive? S.H.I.E.L.D monitors potential threats!" Natasha was still going on against Banner.
"And Captain America is on the threat poll?"
"We all are!"
"You're on that list?" Tony nearly laughed at Steve. "Are you above or below angry bees?"
"I swear to God, Stark, one more crack…"
"Shut up!" Chloe snapped at both of them. "Arguing isn't helping anything—"
"Oh Megamind, come off your high horse, will you?"
"You know what?" Chloe turned to Tony, her eyes flashing blue. "The fact you think that I'm the blue cartoon with a big head is rich coming from you of all people!"
As the arguments grew louder and harder, no one realized the sceptor's blue gem glowing magnificently bright.
"You speak of control, yet you court chaos!" Thor was arguing with Fury and had Banner's semi-agreement.
"It's his MO, isn't it? I mean, what are we, a team?" He humorlessly laughed. "No, no, no. We're a chemical mixture that makes chaos. We're—we're a time bomb."
Despite the situation, Fury wasn't throwing any anger towards Banner. It was more weariness and everyone knew why. "You need to step away."
"Why shouldn't they guy let off a little steam?" Tony clapped a hand over Banner's shoulder.
Of all the things going on, Steve couldn't believe that Tony was still going on about bringing the Hulk out. "You know damn well why! Back off!"
"Oh, I'm starting to want you to make me!"
"Guys…" Chloe said as the two got in each other's faces.
"Yeah, big man in a suit of armor. Take that off, what are you?"
"Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist…" Tony started listing off with pride. Behind him, Natasha gave an agreeing shrug. That pretty much summed him up alright.
"I know guys with none of that worth ten of you," Steve's tone was low with a new type of anger that Seren hadn't yet seen, and he had grounds for that anger. Tony was proving to be a special situation. "I've seen the footage. The only thing you really fight for is yourself. You're not the guy to make the sacrifice play, to lay down on a wire and let the other guy crawl over you."
"I think I would just cut the wire," Tony said flatly.
A humorless laugh slipped from Steve. "Always a way out. You know, you may not be a threat, but you better stop pretending to be a hero."
"A hero, like you? You're a laboratory experiment, Rogers. Everything special about you came out of a bottle."
Instead of the rightful anger he should feel, Steve smirked. "Put on the suit, let's go a few rounds."
Thor laughed from his spot. "You people are so petty, and tiny."
At this point, Chloe would agree. "We are a terrible combination but we need to put out fires and focus on the bigger one!"
"Yeah, this is a team," Banner muttered.
"Agent Romanoff, Agent Winters, would you escort Dr. Banner back to his—"
Banner cut Fury off in a loud yell. "WHERE? YOU RENTED MY ROOM!"
"The cell was just—"
"IN CASE YOU NEEDED TO KILL ME. BUT YOU CAN'T, I KNOW, I TRIED!" The room fell silent at the admission. Banner swallowed hard as all eyes laid on him. "I got low," he said, explaining slowly. " He stopped, everyone staring at him. "I didn't see an end so I put a bullet in my mouth and the other guy .out. So I moved on, I focused on helping other people. I was good until you dragged me back into this freak show and put everyone here at risk. You wanna know my secret, Agent Romanoff? You wanna know how I stay calm?"
Fury and Natasha had silently reached for their respective weapons.
"Doctor Banner, put down the scepter," Steve instructed, not quite ordered. From where he stood, it didn't even look like Banner had realized he picked up the scepter.
Suddenly, the monitor made a noise. The Tesseract had been found. It was enough to make Banner put the scepter down and shift his focus on the Tesseract again. "Sorry, kids. You don't get to see my party trick after all," he muttered.
"You located the Tesseract?" Thor inched forwards but still held caution.
"I can get there faster," Tony said casually as if they hadn't just been in a neck-deep argument.
"Look, all of us—"
"The Tesseract belongs on Asgard, no human is a match for it," Thor interrupted whatever plan Steve had been about to say.
"I think you're right," Chloe's agreement came in quietly and rather slowly, as she was just now realizing. Having the Tesseract was only proving to bring out the worst in everyone. It was horrible.
"You're not going alone!"
Chloe snapped out of her thoughts to see Steve and Tony once again at each other's neck.
Tony had just smacked Steve's hand off his shoulder. "You gonna stop me?"
"Put on the suit, let's find out!"
"I'm not afraid to hit an old man," Tony stepped closer to Steve, facing off.
"Put on the suit!"
"Stop it!" Chloe yelled just before Banner did too.
"Oh my God!" He had spotted something on the monitor and that something created a terrible rumble of explosions.
The room shattered and sent everyone flying into different directions. Steve, Fury, Thor and Tony were lucky enough to have landed across the room, haphazardly near the corridor.
"Put on the suit!" Steve immediately gave the order to Tony and this time, perhaps the only time, Tony didn't disagree.
"Yep!"
They scrambled to get up on their feet. Steve located Fury and Thor not too far from them but he realized that Chloe, Natasha and Banner were nowhere in sight. He panicked.
"Chloe?" He called out and moved about as much as he could around the destroyed room. "Chloe!"
"Hill!?" Fury called through their comms. "What's going on?"
"It's Stardust, sir. She just took out Number 3 engine!"
Steve paused and looked over to Fury. He recognized the alias all too well.
"Turbine's loose. Mostly intact, but it's impossible to get out there and make repairs while we're in the air. We lose one more engine, we won't be. Plus, if Stardust makes another blast, we'll go down. Somebody's got to get her and patch that engine."
Fury nodded at Steve then Tony. "You heard, go!"
"Yeah!" Tony was all for it but Steve was reluctant for many reasons.
First of all, he didn't hear anything from Chloe. She was stuck somewhere below and she wasn't responding. And second of all, engage Seren in a fight? They used to joke all the time about who would win in a fight and that was all it was meant to be: jokes. Never in his life did he want to fight Seren.
"Cap!" Fury called. "You need to go!
"But Chloe—"
"I'm good!" They heard the woman exclaim.
Chloe, Natasha and Banner had plummeted down into the lower equipment rooms. Chloe felt her back aching from the terrible landing but she could move, albeit slowly.
"If Seren's out there, somebody's gotta bring her in before she does something she'll regret!" She called up above. "Steve! Bring her back, please!"
Steve willed himself to stand up for Chloe. She was right. If Tony was going to be preoccupied with the engines, it would be up to him to handle Seren. Steve wasn't sure he could win that fight for many reasons.

Tumblr media
Another Valentine’s Day, another day for the world to mock me being single.
You were having enough of a ‘meh’ week as it is. Dr. Strange had to return to Kamar-Taj for an in-person meeting and Wong was who knows where. They had instructed you to work on your portal and transfiguration spells while they were away which was fair since you’ve been lacking in that department.
It’s just that you longed for some excitement.
Luckily you wouldn’t be spending Valentine’s completely alone; Isabeau, your best friend, was coming over due to as she put it, ‘no one cares about a day where all one gets is somewhat good sex’.
Fast Forward two hours and you’re getting your room ready for Galentine’s Day Movie Night. You had decked out your room with homemade baked goods, drinks, best friend movies, all the good shit.
“I have wonderful news!” Isabeau burst in with gusto yet again.
You shot her a bemused smile, “What is it this time?”
“I have a new crush! It’s Eric from IT!”
“Are you sure this won’t end up like last time?” you queried in reference to the time when Isabeau’s crush turned out to be a complete asshole.
“Oh hush! This won’t be like that at all,” Isabeau retorted, “Now how about you? Have you had any luck with a hot sorcerer?”
“If only I’d be so lucky,” you muttered as Isabeau started on the Toffee Crunch Cookies you made.
A few minutes later, Isabeau’s eyes narrowed and her full lips curved upward in a mischievous smirk.
She had one of her ideas again.
“Hey, why don’t you try an ambiance spell. They’re harmless and you always feel better afterward.”
You didn’t like casting them due to something always going awry, but you relented once Isabeau broke out her puppy dog eyes.
“Alright, alright, I give,” you submitted, “I’ll try a simple floating star spell. Let me find the book.”
Tumblr media
 Both of you went to the library for the book but it was nowhere to be found. All of the ambiance and illusion books were blank.
“Is this a sorcerer thing? I’m not seeing any words or illustrations,” puzzled Isabeau as you went through book after book in the library only to find them blank.
“No. Maybe we should just go back to my room,” you suggested as you made your way to the exit.
“Wait! There’s one book left. You could try that one.” Isabeau pointed to the last book on the shelf. It was a little worn like many of the books that resided in the library, but the inscriptions seemed odd; like it wasn’t supposed to be there.
Yet it was the only book that had anything in it.
“Fine,” you relented as you took the book back to your room.
Tumblr media
  The spells in the book weren’t anything out of the ordinary, but one spell seemed to stand out to both of you.
“Speculum Mundus?” Isabeau wondered.
“It means Mirror World in Latin.”
“Oh,” her eyes got a mischievous glint to them again, “I bet you can’t cast the spell.”
“Not this again.”
“Oh come on,” Isabeau goaded, “It’s a simple mirror world spell. You’ve done it before. What’s the worse that can happen?”
“I don’t know…”
“Are you gonna chicken out again?”
“No! Just give me a minute,” you mumbled as your hands got into the starting position and recited the incantation.
Tumblr media
  The room changed instantly.
It was filled with prism-like structures and kaleidoscope imagery giving the space a surreal ambiance.
It wasn’t unlike the last time you went into the Quantum Realm with Dr. Strange and Wong, and yet the hair on the back of your neck stood straight, and a chill shot through your spine.
You heard a gasp and turned around to see Isabeau with her protruding eyes opened wide and her mouth gaping. Following her line of sight, you saw four of the hottest men you’ve ever seen.
Though something was amiss.
For one thing, there were two Steve Rogers; one with a beard and one clean-shaven. Bucky Barnes’ arm was silver and not dark gray with gold highlights. All of them were in black uniforms with sections of vermillion and/or maroon. Clean-shaven Steve had a black tactical suit with a vermillion Kraken on his chest. Bearded Steve had a skull with tentacles on it. Sam had three vermillion stripes and one maroon stripe across his chest and shoulders with a falcon’s head in red surrounded by a black circle between his pecs.
But the thing that set off all your alarms was the fact that Bucky’s outfit was a dead ringer of his Winter Soldier days.
Instinctively, you grabbed Isabeau’s hand and made a mad dash for the hallway. You needed to get some distance so you could ground yourself.
You tried breaking the spell but to no avail. Not only did the spell not break, but your hands also burned at each attempt.
“We won’t lose you again!” one of the Steves yelled as you and Isabeau turned a corner.
“Come here, mici prințese!” another voice, probably Bucky’s shouted as the two of you made your way into a closet.
“I think we’re okay for now,” you breathed telepathically as the four Adonises crept past your hiding place.
“What’s the plan now?” Isabeau asked fearfully as her heartbeat started to rise in terror.
“I don’t know but-” you were cut off by a strike to the back of your head and your vision rapidly fading to black.
Tumblr media
  Muffled voices and the beeping of medical equipment brought you from the void.
“Nothing is wrong….they’re…good, sir.”
“Be sure that they are. We can’t leave anything up to chance.”
Groggily, you open your eyes to find yourself in a sleek hospital room lightly chained to a bed. Several other people were monitoring your vitals. One of them is Dr. Bruce Banner, or what seems to be Dr. Banner.
Bruce turned to see you looking around with a slightly confused expression, “Ah, you’re awake,” he turned to one of his aides, “Contact the Captain and Lieutenant. Tell them to come to get their bride.”
You blinked. Bride?
“Where is Isabeau, my friend?” you inquired as one of the aides brought you some water.
Bruce scowled, “Don’t think about her. You might be able to see her if the Captain and/or Lieutenant wills it.” he remarked while eyeing you up and down in a condescending almost lecherous manner, “Hmm, looks great for breeding,” Bruce noted as he fondled and prodded your curves.
You’ve always been proud of how you looked, but at that moment you wanted to shrink in the corner after giving this Bruce a roundhouse kick to the groin.
You were about to tell Dark!Bruce to fuck off when Tony Stark, fuck it, Dark!Tony entered the room. This Tony looked a lot more sinister with his silver, gray, light, and steel navy blue armor. His face and hair were mostly uncovered with his facial expression positively predatory.
“Cap’s one lucky bastard. He gets a sexy bunny along with Lieutenant Smart Ass.”
Recalling how some megalomaniacs liked shows of submissiveness, you lowered your head and asked where you were.
Whether it be out of pity, spite, or malice, Tony answered your question, “You’re in another earth, another universe.”
You nearly swiveled to look outside the window. NYC’s skyline was radically different. There were fewer buildings and HYDRA insignias everywhere.
“HYDRA took over this world.” You deadpanned. FUUUUCK!
“Sexy and smart.” Tony praised sardonically.
It didn’t take time for HYDRA to regroup after WWII. Zola and his associates were able to convince Howard Stark to give them the Tesseract with the promise of great renown, riches, and no longer being bound by the laws of weaker men. They were able to create a superweapon with the help of Dr. Whitney Frost and have been ruling the planet ever since.
It could be worse. HYDRA knew they had to offer the people comforts in exchange for their obedience. They eradicated all diseases, created a good standard of living, and ended all petty conflicts under the new world order.
Though Tony didn’t feel the need to tell you. You’ll figure it out on your own.
The doors opened to reveal Steve Rogers and his younger, clean-shaven counterpart in all their masculine glory.
“Good, you’re here.” Bruce welcomed smirking at your silent pleas.
Both soldiers walked over and inspected you.
“Hello, kitten. Name’s Ransom.” The clean-shaven soldier drawled as he moaned from your scent, “Nice set of lips you’ve got there.”
“We’ll definitely have some fun with her,” Steve noted as licked his lips ogling your curves.
You had to use all of your restraint not to spit in their faces.
“We’ll take her.” Ransom decided while Steve nodded.
Several of the aides breathed a sigh of relief as Steve broke the chains on your bed like they were nothing.
“Don’t have too much fun now!” Tony called as Steve picked you up bridal style.
“Who am I kidding? they’ll breed her like a Catholic rabbit!”
Tumblr media
  “Um, where are you taking me?” you queried, your voice barely above a whisper.
“You will address us as ‘Sir’ in public unless instructed otherwise. Is that understood?” It took all that Steve had not to push against the wall and pound your pussy with his cock he was so enraged.
No, he needed to wait. No one was to see what’s theirs.
Ransom, for his part, chuckled and shook his head, “Best not to anger this one, kitten. He hasn’t been in the best of moods.”
Tumblr media
  You gasped once the doors to their living quarters opened.
The place was huge!
It had a modern yet retro design; it should’ve been confusing, but it worked. Grand windows showcased the skyline with a balcony in the middle with a huge kitchen next to what looked to be a restaurant-style fridge and a huge living room with a TV and a fireplace.
Yet there seemed to be something missing.
“Place needs a woman’s touch,” Ransom commented sending a smirk your way.
“I’ll see you in the guest quarters Ransom” Steve deadpanned as he led you down a hall.
Tumblr media
  The bedroom was enormous yet sparse like they didn’t know what to do with it.
You were about to say something when Steve dropped you onto the incredibly soft mattress. His eyes darkened with lust and you knew what he wanted. You couldn’t think of a way out of this, not with the magic inhibitors Bruce placed on your wrists.
Maybe you could give escape one last try; you just had to wait for the right opening.
Steve smirked upon seeing you removing your clothes. He liked that you knew your place, his pretty little princess.
You could only gasp when Steve removed his uniform top. He had an incredibly defined musculature: broad shoulders, beefy biceps, chiseled pecs and abs, and a seriously drool-worthy Adonis Belt. The light shining behind him made his body appear even more glorious.
Steve looked like an ancient god brought to modern times.
With a predatory smirk, Steve slowly crawled to you loving the smell of your arousal. “Let me lay out a few rules, sweetheart. You will make our meals, clean our rooms, bear our children, and be our good little whore. You must earn the right to wear a bra; panties are out of the question.”
Each rule was emphasized by a kiss or a love bite to your jaw, neck, collarbone, and shoulders.
Finally, you are to address us as Sir in public and Daddy in private. Say it.”
“Yes, Daddy,” you muttered with your eyes downcast.
Steve lifted your chin up with his forefinger, “That’s a good girl,” and brought you in for a kiss on the lips.
The kiss was demanding yet soft. You were surprised he was capable of such gentleness.
Steve was about to push his tongue into his mouth when Ransom strolled into the room.
“Does she know the drill?”
Steve broke the kiss with a smirk,” Just finished explaining it.”
Ransom shot you a sardonic smirk, “You got the rules, kitten? Good. Now if you misbehave, I’m gonna send you to the dungeons for a few days.”
Steve started up again, “But...if you’re good-”
“A good little wifey,” Ransom interjected caressing your right cheek and leaning in for a kiss.
This kiss started off soft then intensified (really know how to lure a girl) into one filled with passion and dominance. Ransom forced his tongue into and moaned at your taste. A few seconds later he was pushing what felt like a small tablet past your tongue forcing you to swallow.
“Did you do it yet?”
“Cool it, grandpa! I did, don’t you worry. She’s gonna feel it. Aren’t ya, kitten.”
You started to feel strange. Your body temperature skyrocketed, your mind was in a deep haze, your thighs were clenching on overtime you were so turned on. You needed relief and fast.
“Please Daddies!” you begged as you tried your best not to touch yourself.
“See grandpa? She’s ready.” Ransom purred as he grabbed your thighs and placed them over his shoulders. He planted a few kisses near your entrance and groaned at the smell of your arousal.
It only took one long, slow lick to your slit to turn you into a moaning mess. You couldn’t believe the pleasure you were feeling. It was like a bolt of lightning shot through you.
Ransom groaned at the taste of your juices. Not even Stark’s overpriced chefs could compare. “Fuck, she tastes divine,” he groaned and dove in for more. Ransom attacked your folds and swollen clit with insane intensity and precision alternating between his tongue and fingers.
You were on cloud nine. Each motion took you further to the precipice of an orgasm. Ransom kept bringing you back from the edge only thrust you back into his level of tumultuous.
Steve got in on the action by covering your moans with a kiss of all-consuming passion and started playing with your breasts.
“Fuck, these tits are amazing! Can’t wait until these are filled with milk” Steve purred as he took one of your nipples into his mouth and the other between his big and forefingers.
After twenty minutes of teasing, Ransom finally let you come. A volcanic eruption of ecstasy erupted from your core and Ransom lapped up all of your juices.
“Rogers, you’re in for a treat!” Ransom exclaimed as he hopped off the edge of the mattress.
“I get her pussy first since you got to eat her out,” Steve uttered as grinned at your blissed-out state.
With a tsk, both of them got you into position with Steve’s thick, muscular thighs on either side of your hips and Ransom standing in front of you taking off his pants.
He was huge! His cock was long, thick, and veiny. It wobbled against his masterfully sculpted abs with each step he took. You wondered how that was going to fit in your mouth. Turns out Steve’s was no smaller if his tip being coated with your slick is any indication.
“This won’t hurt, kitten. You were made for us.” Ransom cooed.
You didn’t know how right he was.
Steve made his move by pushing into you inch by delicious inch and moaned at the sensation. “Fuck, she fits like a dream.”
“Don’t take forever, grandpa.” Ransom chided.
“Shut up, ya punk!” Steve retorted as he began thrusting into you loving the way your pussy clenched around him like a vice’s grip.
“Open wide, kitten,” Ransom started to push his throbbing cock into your mouth.
It took a bit of time and effort to loosen your jaw enough for him to fully enter you. He started fucking your mouth before you were ready. You tried not to gag he was so rough.
What happened to the man from earlier?
“Fuckin’ perfect.” Ransom breathed as he was approaching his climax.
Steve came with a primal roar that reverberated throughout the room after making you come two more times.
“Swallow it, kitten” Ransom ordered.
Funny thing is, you didn’t need the order. You delighted in the salty, tangy, and slightly sweet flavor.
Two minutes after you swallowed all of Ransom’s spent, both men decided it was time to move. Ransom got onto the mattress and pulled you on top of him with his tip nudging your entrance. Steve got behind you and placed kisses along the juncture between your neck and shoulders while positioning himself at your ass.
“Please...please don’t do this!” you pleaded, the pill’s effect slipping for the tiniest of moments.
Steve grabbed your neck with just enough force to pause, not hurt.” Best be a good girl now, sweetheart,” he warned.
Ransom slid in first, “Holy fucking shit!” he moaned, “Sam owes me $40.
“That depends on how well their bride is taking to them,” Steve pointed out.
“Eh, we’ll say ours is better.”
Ransom moaned again once he bottomed out and grabbed the globes of your blessed backside. He couldn’t wait to grab and smack it around in their quarters.
Steve moved slowly causing both of your breathing to hitch, his from pleasure and yours from slight pain.
With a grin and smirk, they started moving in tandem. Your body almost couldn’t take the immense pleasure you were feeling.
“I could get used to this,” Ransom remarked.
“Well, we have the week,” Steve breathed past your ear.
Both kept at it until they came in you twice. You nearly passed out after your twelfth orgasm.
“Rest kitten,” Ransom purred as you finally gave in to your exhaustion.
Tumblr media
  “The bride took to our seed,” Steve reported to Director Pierce.
“Good. We found their parents along with the rest of the resistance.” Pierce imparted.
Steve scowled at the information.
You and your friend, Isabeau, were the only ones to survive the Eve Project. HYDRA wanted to genetically groom compatible brides for their top soldiers. You were promised to Steve and Ransom and your friend to Bucky and Sam. Both of you were whisked away to another Earth by the resistance and your treacherous parents.
Now you were back where you belong.
“When do we leave?” Ransom growled.
“Once Strange and Wanda crack the protection spell. In the meantime, enjoy your bride.” Pierce turned to leave, but stopped before turning off the screen,” I want to see some little ones soon.”

The Sweetest Apparition - Part 3
Pairing: Peggy Carter x fem!Reader
Summary: Reader is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and historian who specializes in the life and legacy of Captain Carter. After Nick Fury uses the Tesseract to bring Peggy back, the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. contacts the reader to help her navigate life in the XXI century.
Warnings and notes: Food, mentions of Steggy, mentions of Stucky, very small mentions of war. Other characters are also mentioned. This got way longer than the first two parts, but there’s also way more Peggy here. This series takes place after the last scene of What If… episode one, including spoilers to that episode. Reader uses she/her pronouns.
Word count: 2,304
Series Masterlist
It should be a short walk to your apartment, but you made a small stop each time Captain Carter was curious about something. You also got some take out on the way, making sure to pick at least four different options from separate places and a couple of desserts too, since you didn’t know her taste yet. It was a while before you made it to your street.
During the entire time, your chatting was limited to safe topics - how loud and bright the city was, how many screens there were, the amount of coffee options that existed now. You watched Carter fall in love with her caramel coffee and made a mental note to buy her more sweets.
Soon, the Captain would also need to go shopping. Fury had gotten her the formal white blouse and the black pants she wore now, an outfit much more discreet than the uniform she was wearing when she fell, but that was her entire wardrobe at the moment. That was another mission you should handle, but it could wait until after lunch.
When you finally got home, you placed the food over a kitchen counter and gave Carter a quick tour of the apartment. It wasn’t much, but hopefully it would be enough for both of you until she was more familiar with this century. The tour ended where it started: in your tiny kitchen. You pulled a stool for the Captain and presented her with the options for lunch.
“I suppose you’ve never tried some of those, so I got a few different meals. Burritos, sweet and sour chicken, calzones and Pad Thai. For dessert, there’s lemon tart and triple chocolate cake. I might have gotten a little carried away.”
Peggy took a seat and examined her options. You wondered if that would be, technically her first meal since the 40’s.
“They are all tempting, but I might start with this one.” Her eyes were fixated on a burrito as if it was the Holy Grail. Yeah, that was surely the first time she ate in seventy years. She dove in, so focused on her meal that you didn’t dare to interrupt. Meanwhile, you took the other stool and picked a calzone, eating it while you watched Carter.
You were still trying to wrap your head around the fact that she was really here, and it was surprising that you hadn’t completely freaked out so far, but the prospect of the rest of the day started to worry you. The Captain would certainly have a lot of questions and, if there were inquiries that Fury left for you to answer, they probably pertained more to her personal life than to great historical events.
If the registers about her were right, it wouldn’t be long before the real conversation started. Peggy Carter was too smart to have such a debate in the middle of the street, but she wasn’t known for stalling. As soon as she finished her meal, in the privacy of your (now shared) kitchen, you would have to provide about seven decades of answers.
Before you could try to prepare yourself, she was done with her second burrito. You almost suggested dessert, but the look she gave you left no room for pauses. Carter turned on her stool to face you directly, her posture becoming straighter and her eyes never leaving yours. She was the perfect image of Captain Carter, the hero, the legend who defeated all odds. Still, when she spoke, there was softness in her voice.
“The meal was lovely and so is the apartment. I can’t thank you enough for you kindness, Agent L/N, but I must ask a few things more of you. If you have studied about my life, you must know what happened to Steve Rogers after I was gone.”
You should be ready for that. Of course her first personal concern would be about Rogers. His story with Carter went down in history as a tragic tale of love, bravery and loss. To his last days, Rogers had made it his mission to honor her legacy, but that wasn’t all that he did. How do you tell a person that the love of her life went on to live a decades long, fulfilling relationship with someone else, even though, from her perspective, they were together the day before?
“Please, call me Y/N. And you can ask anything, Captain. I will tell you everything I can.” You took a deep breath, going through the words in your head in search of the best way to let her know. It was best to keep nothing out. Carter deserved that. “Steve Rogers continued to serve as the Hydra Stomper until the war had ended and all known Hydra operations had been eliminated. After that, he stepped out of the suit so that Howard Stark could continue his research with the Tesseract. I believe neither of them ever gave up on bringing you back, but, in many ways, they also moved on to build new lives.”
You made a small pause, in case she wanted to say something, but Carter only gave you a nod, encouraging you to continue. It was impossible to look away from her eyes, or to keep anything hidden when she stared at you with such intensity. Even in silence, sitting still, she emanated a power that kept you talking.
“A few years after the war, Rogers and Stark started an intelligence agency to keep the world safe from threats we could barely understand. They named it S.H.I.E.L.D., because of you. That is the agency I work for, directed by Nick Fury.” There was something poetic in the way that same agency ended up being the reason Peggy Carter was back, but it wasn’t your place to point that out. “Rogers never stopped fighting, even without the suit. He was a legendary agent, working along with James Barnes until they retired. They were also together for the rest of their lives.”
That was the piece of information you feared would break Carter’s heart, but she had a bright smile after hearing that.
“That suits them. All of them.” The joy in her voice sounded so sincere, and you couldn’t help but ask.
“Were you and Rogers… Together? It is said so in the official files, but…” In your studies, you sometimes wondered if their relationship was just a myth, maybe a publicity stunt to humanize the fallen super soldier. It was your job to question the data, but you had never paid that possibility much attention until now.
Instead of being offended by your invasion of her privacy, Carter laughed so lightly and freely that you felt your cheeks getting warm.
“Oh, darling, Steve Rogers had a heart too big to have only one soul mate. He was the love of my life, yes, and I was the love of his, but not the only one. A love so beautiful and dedicated is supposed to be shared. Of course I’m sad I didn’t get to share the rest of his life with him, but I’m relieved to know that he and Bucky had each other. And that’s not to say I’m a being of such virtue that I’m above jealousy. I felt jealous of Steve alright, many times, but I could never be jealous of him with Buck. They fit well together and they were good for each other. They were real, just as Steve and I were. Steve deserved to be loved through a lifetime. I’m grateful that he was.”
Carter’s eyes shined with tears, but she didn’t allow any to fall. Maybe she would let herself grief for the lost possibilities later, but for now she was handling such an emotional journey with more elegance than you thought possible. It didn’t seem to be an act at all. On the contrary, what touched you the most was the honesty in her words. That selflessness of being genuinely happy to hear of how her soul mate lived on without her, in love with someone else, told you more about Peggy Carter than any history book ever had. And that’s how she reacted right after being thrown into the next century, coming directly from a war and landing in a world she didn’t recognize.
“I don’t think history ever made you justice, Captain. The general public thinks of you as a hero, but they’re so far from knowing the person behind the suit... You know, it’s very nice to meet you.” You couldn’t help but sharing a bit of what was on your mind. To that moment, your hero was turning out to be even better than your daydreams, and it was only fair to let her know so.
At that, she gave you a big smile and your heart skipped a beat. You would have a hard time sharing an apartment with this woman.
“You are far too kind to me. To be honest, they never showed much interest on me, suit or not, until I went against official orders and started throwing tanks around and fighting the battles that needed to be fought. I am more concerned about what I am able to achieve, regardless of how they will see me. And there’s no need to call me Captain, Y/N. Heavens, we live and work together now and you’re my guide to modern life. Peggy is fine. And it’s nice to meet you too.” She took the initiative to get a slice of chocolate cake, already making herself at home. You had the feeling that her adaptation to this world wouldn’t be too difficult, all things considered. Peggy Carter would take whatever she was given and make more of it than anyone imagined possible.
“As you wish, Peggy. Speaking of that, there’s a lot I think you’ll like to see about life now. What else are you curious about?” You took your own slice of cake, trying to feel at ease in this conversation. You couldn’t be on high alert whenever Carter was around if she was going to be around all the time, but that was easier said than done. Your responsibilities here were enormous and, to be frank, you were determined to be your best self and impress her, even if just a bit. Maybe telling her about the wonders of nowadays technology would do the trick.
“I am curious about everything. I can’t wait to know all about the development of science, or what I missed in seven decades of sociopolitical turmoil, but there’s one more person I’d love to hear about before we get to that. You mentioned Howard moving on with his life, didn’t you? What exactly was that little menace up to while I was gone?”
Now, that was a rich topic of conversation.
“Well, Stark continued his research with the Tesseract and with many other projects, sometimes along with the US government, and he built a billionaire empire. Weapons, all sorts of technology, wild parties. The man had everything. He has a son, Tony, who inherited the tech, the money and the brains, but with a stronger inclination to heroism. You see, Tony Stark built himself a supersuit, partially inspired by his father’s Hydra Stomper, but with a larger variety of uses. It’s said that Steve Rogers was a sort of mentor to him, but I couldn’t get Stark to talk a lot about it when I interviewed him.”
You couldn’t tell which part made Peggy more excited. She nodded along as you listed Howard Stark’s achievements, as if it was all expected, and her eyes got wider when you told her about his son. When you mentioned Rogers, she almost jumped in her seat. She was already invested, but dropping that name sealed the deal.
“Fury gave me this.” She took two business cards out of her pocket. “It has his telephone number and Barton’s too. Could I use your telephone to call him? I would like to meet this Tony Stark, and I bet Fury would be able to reach him.”
Giving Director Fury a call from your cellphone felt strange, but how could you deny Peggy that? If the Director gave her the number, he wanted her to be able to reach him, right?
Instead of dialing yourself, you showed Carter how to use the phone. She looked like a kid on Christmas whenever she was given access to new technology. You would make sure she got a cellphone of her own soon so you could show her everything the device could do.
She called Fury and you waited as they talked for less than two minutes. Peggy handed you the phone when she was done, with a smile that said she got what she wanted.
“So, what did the Director say?” You asked, anxious to know the outcome of the call.
“We’re meeting Tony Stark tomorrow at 2pm in his tower. Was it him who named it Stark tower or is that Howard’s doing?” She narrowed her eyes a bit, still smiling.
“The tower was built by Tony, so I think we can’t blame Howard for that one.” You joked. “Are you meeting Fury at S.H.I.E.L.D. before you two go to Stark’s?”
“Oh, Fury is not going. He booked the meeting for you and me, if you would like to accompany me.” Peggy sounded hesitant, as if she had just considered that you might not want to join her on that plan.
"You’re asking me if I wish to be there when Captain Carter meets Tony Stark? Please, if I didn’t get the chance to be a part of that exchange, I would beg you for a detailed retelling as soon as you got home.”
Your reply made Peggy laugh once more, and you were getting used to that sound very quickly.

“She’s not the only one whose kept secrets, Steve,” Natasha said, once Y/N was clearly gone. “We all have.”
“This is different,” Steve argued, mad. “This has to do with half the universe turning into dust and the man who did it. She should have told us so that we could have—“
“Done what, Steve?!” Tony retorted. “Spent the past five years planning and waiting for something to happen?! That’s not a way to live! I know that because I’ve lived that! I’ve tried to do that!” Tony took a deep breath, trying to calm himself as he backed away from everyone. “I may be the only one who feels this way, but I wouldn’t change the last five years. Yes, I miss people terribly and feel the guilt of what happened constantly. But I finally have the family I’ve always longed for. I have a daughter who is my whole world, and a wife who fights for what she loves.”
“Her telling us everything wouldn’t have changed when Scott came back or when I put the pieces together about time travel,” Tony continued. “Keeping that a secret didn’t change anything.”
“Tony’s right,” Clint spoke up. “It wouldn’t have changed anything.”
Tony and Clint nodded at each other. Tony knew it had to be hard for Clint to admit that, especially since he had lost his whole family. Steve clenched his jaw, frustrated.
“Steve,” Natasha called calmly, “have you ever thought about how many times you get angry at Y/N for keeping things from you?”
“I don’t understand what that has to do with anything,” Steve said.
“You freak and turn around and blame everything on her. Maybe she doesn’t tell you things because she knows that you won’t react in the best way. And you doubt her, so much.”
“How is this now about me?”
“I’m sorry, isn’t everything?” Tony retorted. The two men glared at each other in silence for a moment, the tension getting thick. “I’m going to go check on my wife.”
~~~
“Hey Pepper,” Y/N greeted, video calling her friend.
“Hey Y/N,” Pepper replied.
“Is Morgan up?”
“I’m sorry, I put her to bed already.”
“That’s okay.”
“Is something wrong though? You seem a little down.”
“I just… can you poke me in there for a second? I just need to see her.”
“Of course.” Pepper began heading to Morgan’s room. “She really misses you guys.”
“We miss her too.”
Pepper quietly opened Morgan’s door and reached her hand in so that Y/N could see the little girl on the phone. Morgan was sound asleep, clinging onto the Iron Man stuffy that Tony had bought her. Y/N’s eyes slowly filled with tears as she longed to hold her child.
“Thank you, Pep,” Y/N said softly.
“Of course,” the woman replied.
“Tell her we’ll call her tomorrow. And that we love her.”
“Y/N, what’s up?”
“This is all just getting more real. And I don’t want something to happen with Morgan knowing her parents love her.”
“Nothing’s going to happen. You and Tony are going to be fine.”
Y/N gave her friend a tight lipped smile, clearly not believable. “Thanks for taking care of her for us, Pep. Good night.”
Y/N sighed after hanging up, leaning back against the headboard. She closed her eyes and sucked in her lips. She had never missed her abilities more in the last five years, then at this very moment. She wished she could simply portal herself home, to hold her child. But Y/N couldn’t, and she knew she needed to stay at the compound and finish out the mission. No matter the cost.
“Are you okay?” Tony’s voice was quiet as he leaned in the doorway, worried eyes raking over his wife.
“I’m fine,” she answered, not bothering to open her eyes.
Tony sighed before he walked over and sat himself on the bed. He made sure he wasn’t touching her, not wanting to press. “I let Steve have it after you left. It wasn’t right for him to do that. Red even had my back.” Y/N didn’t respond. “Honey… I’m sorry.” He set a comforting hand on her leg. “I know that I’ve pushed you in the past for not saying anything. But I’m beginning to see the weight that the Stones have placed on you. I’m so sorry.”
“He will never understand,” Y/N breathed out quietly. “He hasn’t been able to since he came out of the ice… I lived 5 years with believing he was dead. I changed in that time and he has never been able to accept that… but doesn’t make it hurt any less. He’s still my twin…” Y/N finally opened her eyes and met Tony’s. She reached out and took his hand from her leg. “Thank you,” she whispered. “For standing with me.”
“I made vows to do so. I never intend on breaking them.”
She pulled him closer to her. She wrapped herself around him, earning a light chuckle.
“Can we stay like this the rest of the night?” She whispered.
“Of course,” Tony answered, kissing her hairline. “We can stay like this as long as you like.”
~~~
In the morning, the couple ate breakfast in bed before venturing out to face the rest of the group. Everyone was seemingly trying to act normal, but Steve. Every time he glanced Y/N’s way, it was harsh. Cold and unforgiving. Tony kept himself at Y/N’s side as the group began going over the Tesseract.
“Our first major run in with the Tesseract, or Space Stone, was back in the 40’s,” Steve explained. He was standing in front of everyone, pictures, videos and information were playing on the screens behind him. “HYDRA’s then leader, Red Skull, was using it to create mass energy weapons. Y/N and I were on Red Skull’s plane when it took off to bomb major cities around the world.” Steve looked at Y/N. “Would you like to tell the rest of it?”
She pursed her lips, trying to keep her emotions in check. “Sure.” She stood up and went to the front of the room. “As Steve said, we were in the ship. I was trying to get to the controls and the Tesseract, when it could knocked loose. It portaled Red Skull away. I…” Y/N paused with a sigh. She hadn’t recounted this story since she woke up. “I grabbed the cube as it fell, burning my hand. Dropping it, it burned a hole in the floor causing both myself and the cube to fall. I grabbed onto it as a fell…” Y/N looked down at her scarred hand, rubbing it nervously. “Howard Stark later found it in his search for Steve and I.”
“After that, it was in SHIELD’s hands,” Y/N continued. “And, from what Carol has added to the record, a scientist who was trying to save the Skrull species. From their Fury began tests on it and began making weapons of his own. That’s how the Battle of New York started… Being control by the Mind Stone himself, Loki came and took the Tesseract. He used it to open a giant portal, letting the Chitauri army through.”
More video footage began being played of that day behind her. The all watched, with those who were there remembering the day like it was yesterday.
“How long did you fight these guys?” Rocket asked.
“About, uh, two or three hours,” Natasha responded. She looked at Tony who nodded along in agreement.
“The Chitauri are the suckiest army in the galaxy. Why didn’t you just blow up the mothership?”
“We didn’t know that was a thing,” Steve said.
“You didn’t know that was a thing?” Rocket laughed. Tony stood up from his seat, shaver in hand. (He was shaving as he was listening.) He went up behind Rocket and shaved some of his hair on top of his head. “Everyone knows— Hey!”
Tumblr media
“There we go,” Tony said. “All better.”
“Tony was the one to send the missile up through the portal, successfully destroying the mother ship,” Y/N explained. “I closed the portal.” She looked at Tony, who met her eyes. “Luckily, we all came out of it alive.”
“Not all of us,” Clint commented. “We lost a good one that day. Phil Coulson.”
“Yeah… about that… Fury actually brought him back to life.”
“What?!” Natasha, Clint, Thor, and Steve exclaimed. The four quickly noticed at Bruce and Tony weren’t phased.
“Did you two know about this?” Natasha asked.
“Yes,” Bruce answered, “but only because it was vital. We were helping Skye—“
“Daisy,” Tony and Y/N corrected together.
“—and Y/N with their new found powers. Phil was a big part in that.”
“Those missions… that base you would talk about… SHIELD suddenly resurfacing,” Steve mumbled, putting the pieces together. “You leaving to save your Team… You kept SHIELD and Coulson alive, right under our noses.”
“Again, I was only doing what was right,” Y/N defended herself. “We saved the world countless more times than anyone even realized, including the other heroes in this room…. Coulson’s team is the reason we found Loki’s scepter. And in Sokovia, the helicarrier Fury brought was from Coulson. He had found it and patched it back together.”
“Sif,” Thor whispered. “She was so very vague about the two times she was down here.”
“She was keeping the secret. If people knew that Coulson was alive, it would have changed the game.”
“How did he survive?” Natasha asked.
“It was called the TAHITI Program. Fury directed Coulson to head it. It was meant for a fall of an Avenger. To bring them back if anything were to happen in battle. After years of trials, it was disbanded. The side affects were awful… but then Coulson died. And Fury couldn’t accept that.”
“Who else knew?” Steve asked.
“Besides Fury, Tony, Bruce, Sif, and myself,  Maria Hill, our SHIELD teams, and many government officials worldwide. Including President Ellis.”
Steve scoffed. “All the secrets,” he muttered, shaking his head. “This is getting ridiculous.”
“Where is Phil now?” Natasha asked. “Did he survive?”
“He died right before the Blip,” Y/N answered. “Complications from the TAHITI Program and other things that had happened… Please don’t be angry. I understand that it seems like I’ve kept some big things from everyone. But you have to try and understand it from my point of view.”
Everyone was silent, not knowing what to say. Y/N stood in the front of the room, preparing for the attack on her. But it never came. Steve stormed out and the others from the original team followed, including Tony and Bruce. Y/N closed her eyes, trying to keep herself calm.
“I know that I’m new here and don’t know much,” Scott said, standing up to go to Y/N. “But I know that you have a good heart. And that you were only trying to protect everyone.”
She looked at him with a tight-lipped smile. “Thank you, Scott.”
~~~
“It’s just one thing after another with her!” Steve exclaimed. “Is everything a lie? It’s like I don’t even know who she is anymore!”
“Steve, I think we need to stay calm and look at this from her said,” Natasha said. “She has been trying to protect everyone, except herself. The whole time she was going from fight to fight without much of a break.”
“It’s true,” Tony agreed. “I personally witnessed the wear and tear it did to her.”
“When she got shot after SHIELD fell, was that because of Coulson?” Steve asked, marching up to Tony.
“It wasn’t because of Coulson. It was because someone on her team ended up being HYDRA.”
Steve ran a hand down her face. “I don’t know where the lies stop and the truth begins.”
“She never actually lied to you,” Natasha brought up. “She told you what she could and kept the rest to herself. To protect everyone.”
“She still should have told us about Coulson,” Clint spoke up. “He was important to all of us.”
“Coulson and Fury specifically instructed her that the team not know,” Tony explained. “She actually got in trouble for telling me and Bruce.”
“But again we had to know,” Bruce said. “Y/N and Skye—“
“Daisy.”
“—had suddenly gained powers. If anyone was going to be able to help them, it was going to be us.”
“I need some time to think,” Steve said, walking away.
“We really shouldn’t be focusing on this right now,” Bruce sighed, shaking his head. “We should be focusing on the Stones. What Y/N kept from us is not the priority.”
“As long as she tells us any other information that could be of use to us,” Natasha said.
“She will,” Tony promised.
“I can’t imagine she’s taking this well,” Clint mentioned.
“She’s not really showing very much, trying to keep it all in. But I don’t blame her. Steve’s been going after her since he got out of the ice.”
“It’s hurting both of them,” Natasha said. “It’s like they want it to be how is was before the ice. Yet, they both have changed.”
“I don’t think Steve’s willing to see it the most,” Bruce added. “It’s going to tear them apart when we need them to work together the most right now.”
“Together, they can be one of the best teams.”
Tony sighed. “Let’s finish getting the information on the Stones. Then we can worry about the rest of it.”
~~~
They all gathered back together to go over more about the Stones. They finished all the new on the Tesseract and Space Stone before moving to the Mind Stone. It was hard to talk about that one, since Vision was a big part of it.
“Where’s Vision now?” Scott asked.
“We brought him back to the Compound, but the Accords and his own will forced us to give his body to an organization called SWORD,” Natasha explained. “They were forced to dismantle him because of the Accords.”
“We were too late in getting him to Wakanda,” Bruce explained. “So there was no way to bring him back without the Stone.”
“Hopefully that the only permanent casualty we take from all this,” Tony commented, bringing Y/N closer to his side.
“That wasn’t the only life lost,” Nebula said. “My sister, Gamora, she died too.”
They took on the Soul Stone next. There was very little information on it besides what Y/N and Nebula knew.
“Thanos found the Soul Stone on Vormir,” Nebula explained.
Tumblr media
“What is Vormir?” Natasha asked, taking notes.
“A dominion of death, at the very center of Celestial existence. It’s where… Thanos murdered my sister.”
Tumblr media
Everyone sat there awkwardly, and saddened. Not knowing what to say or do.
“Not it,” Scott said, breaking the awkward silence.
“Y/N,” Steve called, in this stern Captain voice. “Do you know anything about the Soul Stone that could possibly help us?”
“I know that it is a very power Stone in its own right. With it I was able to conjure the spiritual representation of those who are dead.”
“What?” A few gasped. Tony reached over and grabbed her hand.
“I saw…” She paused, swallowing her emotions down. “I saw my unborn son, AJ, my parents, and Phil Coulson.”
“Our parents?” Steve questioned. Y/N responded with a simple nod. “How could you not tell me?”
“At the time we weren’t talking, and it never came up later.”
“I can’t—“
“Guys,” Natasha stood up in the middle, placing herself between the siblings. “Stop fighting. We have something bigger we need to focus on, and if you can’t see that you both can leave.”
“I’m not the one with the problem,” Steve growled.
Holding the tip of her tongue between her teeth, she silently watched Steve. She was trying to put her thoughts together when Tony decided to speak up.
“Seriously, Rogers, cut the bullshit,” Tony said. “I get you’re probably hurt that she never told you anything. But that doesn’t give you the right to make her your personal emotional punching bag. Crap happened and she didn’t tell you, but she’s telling you now.”
“You know…” Y/N began slowly. “I miss the days when it was you, Bucky, and I against the world. Just like you do. The days you trusted me and didn’t doubt me, no matter what… you blame this all on me, Steve? Fine! But communication is a two way street. Just remember that. I’m not the only one that’s kept secrets. Like the one about Howard and Bucky.” That left Steve silent. “I’ll be in the other room, trying to put a plan together if anyone needs me.” She left.
“Go work out some energy, Steve,” Natasha suggested. “We’ll take it from here.”
~~~
Tony found Y/N laying on a table with FRIDAY talking to her about the Time Stone.
“Mute,” Tony ordered, coming into the room.
“If you’re here to talk about Steve, I’m not listening,” Y/N responded, looking at the ceiling.
“I figured. That’s why I came to join you and help.” Tony leaned over Y/N and gently kissed her.
“Uh, guys,” Bruce broke in before the couple could get heated. They turned to see Bruce and Nat standing in the doorway. “We just came to see if you needed any help. Everyone else needed a break.”
“Help would be great,” Y/N responded.
Tony crawled up onto the table, sitting by Y/N, while Y/N sat up. Bruce and Nat came in further and the four of them began going through everything they knew about the Time Stone and trying to form the most logical plan to collect the Stones. After of few hours of nothing coming together, Tony and Y/N were back laying on the table. Bruce was laying on the floor with Natasha leaned up against him.
Tumblr media
“That Time Stone guy…” Natasha began again.
“Doctor Strange,” Bruce corrected.
“Yeah, what kind of doctor was he?”
“Ear-nose-throat meets rabbit from a hat,” Tony answered, spinning his glasses in one hand while rubbing his eyes.
“Something neuro,” Y/N clarified.
“Nice place in the village, though,” Bruce added.
“Yeah,” Tony agreed. “Sullivan Street.”
“Hmmm… Bleecker.”
“Wait, he lived in New York?” Natasha wondered.
“No. He lived in Toronto,” Tony scoffed. “Were you even paying attention?”
“Guys, if you pick the right year, there are three Stones in New York.”
Bruce sat up in surprise saying, “Shut the front door.”
Tumblr media
~~~
The team was quickly gathered and Y/N explained the best points for them to go.
“Okay, we will retrieve the Soul and Power Stones in space 2014; the Reality Stone on Asgard in 2013; and the Space, Mind, and Time Stones in New York City in 2012,” she told them, pulling the information up on the screens.
“Now all we need are to assign the teams,” Tony stated.
“I’ve sketched out a plan and would like to get everyone’s opinions.”
They all glanced Steve’s way, waiting for the Captain to say something. He simply glared, arms crossed over his chest.
“Shoot,” Clint encouraged, when Steve didn’t speak up.
“So, due to certain knowledge of events, I believe that we need to try and stick to our own timelines, even though it could be dangerous,” Y/N explained. “We know our own timelines best. Where to avoid, where the Stones would be found, all that jazz. With that in mind, I was thinking Thor would go to Asgard, Rocket and Nebula would go to space, and the rest of us would go to New York.”
“The teams need to be evened out,” Steve spoke up, not impressed.
“I was just getting to that. I was going to see if anyone was going to volunteer to retrieve any of the Stones. I believe we need at least two people on each mission. And remember, the space mission is actually two separate missions.”
“I’ll go with Thor,” Rocket offered. “I think I could probably help the best there.”
“Thank you Rocket.”
“I can go with Nebula,” Rhodey said. “I’m not familiar with any of the spots, so I might as well.” Y/N nodded in agreement, making a note of it.”
“I should stay in 2012,” Tony said. “Being back in the Tower, I might have to break into JARVIS.”
“Agreed,” Y/N.
“I’ll stay in 2012 as well,” Steve said. “I also think Scott could be a good asset with us as well.”
“Sounds great,” Scott nodded along.
“Bruce, I was thinking that you and I could go and speak to the Ancient One and get the Time Stone,” Y/N suggested. “I have a feeling it will take some convincing to take the Stone from her.”
“Okay,” Bruce agreed.
“That leaves Clint and Natasha. Since you guys are a good team, how do you feel about hitting up Vormir for the Soul Stone?”
The two looked at each other and nodded, before looking back at Y/N.
“We can do that,” Clint said.
“Awesome,” Y/N responded. “Now we just need specifics for each mission. Break off into teams and use the information to create a specific plan.”
Everyone split off and created plans for their team. Coming back together, each plan was explained.
“Alright,” Steve claimed the attention once the final plan was laid out, “we have a plan. Six Stones, three teams. One shot. Take the night to get things together and rest, we’ll meet up and head out in the morning.”

Chapter eleven
Bucky Barnes x Reader
Word Count: 3560
This is technically a reader insert but without the (y/n) and all that. She also has no name mentioned so feel free to imagine as you please.
Follow the reader through the events of the Captain America movies and experience her love for Bucky Barnes.
Warnings: none
Note: Honestly, this chapter reads a little weird to me but my friend who helps me edit said it was fine. IDK going from the 40s to 2012 is weird when trying to write.

Seven months had gone by since Steve and I had been unfrozen. This new world I suddenly woke up in was exhausting. Everything had changed from the simplest thing like manners to complicated things like technology.
Days after waking up, we had been sent to a place called “The Retreat” so we could catch up on the seventy years we had missed out on. There was so much that we took to writing everything down in small notebooks, so we could remember.
I caught onto using the new technology quicker than Steve since I had worked with Howard Stark for several years. Being able to adapt to strange and new tech on the fly was a requirement when working with him.
After those few weeks there, we were both moved into two separate government apartments located in New York. I wish I could say that it got easier with time, but it didn’t. Instead of going to hang out with Steve or actually trying to make acquaintances with anyone, I just stayed in my room, locked away from everything. Coping with being in the future was the easy part, learning to live without everyone I ever knew was hard.
I hadn't known peaceful sleep in a long time. Every time I closed my eyes I am met with nightmares. The softness of the mattress had made it feel like I would fall through at any moment, back into the ice. To try and combat this I pushed my bed into the far corner of the room and made a cot directly under the frame. It felt safer to lay on the hard floor in the dark. The nightmares still came through, sometimes they were battles, sometimes they were of the plane crashing, but most of the time they were about losing Bucky. Every time I woke up in a cold sweat and never went back to bed. I just stared unblinking at the metal that made the bed frame.
One night after a particularly taxing dream I decided to take a walk. It was three in the morning, so I wouldn't have to deal with a lot of people. I changed out of my pajamas into some of the clothes I had been provided. The clothes of the future were tighter than in the forties. It had taken me a while to get used to the feeling of fabric clinging to my legs and upper body. The outside world was quiet except for the occasional car passing by. I kept my eyes to the ground, not really caring where I ended up. I only looked up when I was almost run over by another late-night walker. Peering from left to right, my eyes fixed on an old faded sign hanging above me. The letters were just barely readable and said in large letters ‘Boxing gym’. With another survey of the area, I realized where I was. This was the gym that Bucky used to take Steve when teaching him self-defense. I had tagged along a couple of times before I had joined the SSR, I was surprised it was still here. I smiled weakly and turned to the door. The light inside was on, it couldn’t hurt to see if they were open. The door creaked open and I slipped in quietly. The sound of someone working out came down the long brick hallway. Hesitantly I made my way to the open doors that led to the sparring room.
Stopping just past the threshold, to my surprise, I spotted Steve, who was busy punching the life out of a punching bag. I walked through the small office and around the boxing rings before I stopped again and leaned against one of the columns a few feet away from where Steve stood. I watched him for a while before he landed a hard punch on the bag and it flew off into the distance. I started clapping slowly and he turned around in shock.
“Good job, you broke the bag, but you do know you’re gonna have to pay for that right?”
“Hey kid, I haven’t seen you in a while. I came by your apartment but you didn’t answer.”
“I know Stevie, I just haven't felt up to company since we got back to New York. I hope you can forgive me.” He looked at me with sad eyes and took three long steps in my direction. His arms came out to engulf me in a hug.
“It’s okay, I understand. Promise you’ll tell me if something's wrong, okay?” I nodded into his chest and he squeezed me tighter.
“I couldn't sleep, I guess you couldn't either.”
“No, too many thoughts.” He let go of me and went to get two more punching bags. He hung them up a few feet away from one another before turning to me and asking if I wanted to join. Pretty soon we were both laughing together if it felt almost like we were back home before everything happened. That was until the same dark-skinned man from that day seven months ago showed up. I later learned he was Nick Fury, director of SHIELD.
“I’m glad to find you both here.” He stated.
“Are you here with a mission, Sir?” Steve asked.
“I am.”
“Is this to try and get us back out in the world?” I asked.
“No, I'm trying to save it.” he thrust out an open manila folder. I grabbed it slowly and brought it to where Steve and I could both look at it. The blue cube that had evaporated Johann Schmidt was in the photograph pinned to the first page. In large bold letters beside the pictures spelled out TESSERACT. We slowly walked to a nearby bench and sat down.
“That's HYDRA’s secret weapon. I thought it fell into the ocean that day,” I whispered.
“Howard fished it out of the water when they went looking for you both. He thought what we think, that this cube could be an unlimited sustainable energy source.” Fury informed us.
“Who took it from you?” Steve questioned.
“He’s called Loki, he’s not from around here. We have a lot we're gonna need to catch you both up on if you agree to help. This world has gotten stranger than you already know.”
“I doubt anything could surprise us anymore, right Stevie?”
“Yeah,” he agreed.
“Ten bucks says you’re both wrong.” Fury bet. We both got up from our seats and handed the file back. Steve went and grabbed another bag from the floor and I just headed straight for the door.
“There are debriefing packets at your apartments, read through them and get back to me by tomorrow afternoon. And before you leave, is there anything we should know about the tesseract?”
“You should have left it in the ocean.” Steve and I said at once before walking out of the gym. Once we were outside on the sidewalk we hugged and said our goodbyes for the moment and then went our separate ways.
The walk home felt longer than the walk to the gym, but this gave me time to think about what I wanted to do. Whether I wanted to go on this mission, or if I just wanted to lay low and live my life. By the time I walked through my front door I had almost made my decision, but I was waiting to read the file before I decided for good. With a quick look through the minimal information provided I sighed and threw the papers down onto my kitchen counter. Shaking my head I murmured to myself.
“No, I am not doing this. This cube is not worth it.” Rubbing my eyes I went back to my room and crawled under the bed, not caring that I was still in jeans and a t-shirt. I was not going to walk blindly into anything dealing with that cube again. I lost my fiance and everyone I have ever known because of that stupid blue thing, I'm not going to go anywhere near it again. I laid there quietly for a while before I eventually drifted off into a restless sleep.
Tumblr media
The next morning I woke up with a start, almost hitting my head on the bed above me. Furious honking made its way from the street into my room. One thing I definitely missed from the past was how quiet it once was at seven a.m.
Along with the decision to not join the mission, I had also made up my mind about leaving New York. This had been a long decision in the making and the talk with Fury last night was enough to make the choice for me. I couldn't live in this city anymore. The places I used to hang out at were still here, but they had been renovated so many times that they were unrecognizable. Everywhere I turned It was like I was walking through a strange alternate reality. I saw glimpses of the past, like ghosts around every corner, it was worse when it was a place Bucky and I frequented.
When I had gotten back from the Retreat I made the mistake of going to mine and Steve’s old apartment. It had been torn down to construct a bookstore, along with several other retail shops. I broke down in the street when I saw it, waves upon waves of emotions crashed into me. All the memories I had there with Steve, mom, and Bucky had no place to live now other than in my mind. The next mistake I made was to go down the next few blocks to Bucky’s apartment he shared with his mom and sister, Rebecca. It was no longer there either, a bakery stood in its place. I turned and left before the onslaught of tears came. After that day I thought it would be best to go somewhere else, somewhere I had no memories.
I crawled out from under the bed and slowly moved to the bathroom to start getting ready for the long day to come. Once I had showered and gotten dressed I sat myself down on the living room sofa, looking wearily at the telephone on the end table. Hesitantly I picked up the receiver and dialed the number that had been in the tesseract briefing file. It rang twice before Nick Fury answered.
“Mr. Fury, I’m calling to tell you that I won’t be joining your team for whatever mission you have going on. I just want to lay low and rebuild my life and live it quietly without interruption.” I let out a long breath.
“Well, that’s unfortunate. Was really hoping to have you fight with us. If you change your mind, you know where to contact me. Goodbye Agent Rogers.” He hung up quickly after that, not giving me a chance to tell him goodbye as well. The next call was going to be the hard one, I had to tell Steve my plans. I dialed his number slowly as I raised the receiver to my ear. It didn’t even have time to get through the first ring before Steve picked up.
“Hello?” He asked on the other end.
“Hey, it’s me.”
“What’s up kid. Have you called Fury about joining the mission? I called about an hour ago letting them know I’d help.” He sounded a little enthusiastic.
“That’s actually what I’m calling about. I’m not sure how you’ll feel about this but I’m not going to help with the mission.”
“Oh,” he sounded surprised. “Why not? I thought you’d want to help get rid of that thing once and for all.”
“It’s not that, I want nothing more than for the tesseract to be gone for good. I just don’t think I can be a part of it, I don’t want this thing to take over my life if we can’t get rid of it. This brings me to another important thing I need to tell you. I can’t stay here in New York, so I’m moving to DC.” He was quiet for a while after I had said that, the only thing I could hear coming from his side was his breath. I grew more anxious by the minute waiting for him to say something.
“What do you mean you’re moving? Why can’t you stay here with me?”
“Don’t be selfish.” I snapped.
“I’m not being selfish, you are.” he raised his voice. I huffed through my nose, getting annoyed.
“I can’t stay here any longer. I have no idea what it is like for you, but for me, being in this city is torture. I see ghosts from the past every time I leave my house. I can’t go anywhere without seeing him, and every time I see him, I break down. I never got to say goodbye and that day plays over and over in my head. Steve, I’m being tormented with nightmares to the point where I have barely gotten five hours of sleep in the past week. I need to get out of here whether you like it or not.” Tears had started to stream down my face as I yelled into the phone.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner? I could have helped you, I still can help you if you let me. If you leave I can’t keep you safe, I can’t protect you like I’m supposed to.” He was using his soft “grown-up” voice he always used with me when I was younger to try and calm me down but the tears kept streaming down my cheeks at a rapid pace.
“I can protect myself, we did take the same serum,” I choked out. “I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to bother you with my problems, I can deal with them myself. Plus you have your own things to deal with, you don’t need to help me with mine.” My head was starting to hurt now and my cheeks and neck itched with quickly drying tears.
“Fine. The only way I will be okay with you leaving is if you promise to call me at least twice a week and you let me help you move.” I gave a strained laugh and nodded, even if he couldn't see it.
“Okay, it’s a deal. I actually already have an apartment lined up, so you can come over and help me pack everything up whenever you want to. I’m going to try and be out of New York by the end of next week.”
“I’ll be right over.” I laughed as I told him that I’d be waiting. I laid the receiver back down in its spot and stood up to go to the bathroom. I stared at myself in the mirror, thinking. I was glad my relationship with Steve could handle an argument, understand one another, then go right back to normal, I don’t think we would be this close if it couldn't. I blinked back a few stubborn tears and bent down to grab a rag from the sink cabinet, I dampened it in warm water then wiped the dried tears from my face. The warm water felt wonderful on my skin.
Tumblr media
Over the next week and a half, Steve and I boxed up what few belongings I had and packed them and the furniture into a moving truck. I didn’t own a car so the moving truck would be my transportation to DC. One of the many things SHIELD had us do was take a modern driving test, which wasn’t hard, just a few more signs to remember and more gadgets in the car than there used to be, I ended up passing with flying colors.
By Friday morning we had everything ready to go. Steve would follow me on his motorcycle and I would drive the truck the whole three and a half hours to my new apartment.
We stopped several times on the way down, mainly so Steve didn’t have to sit on the bike for the whole three hours straight. We also stopped for lunch. All in all the trip took us about five hours, with traffic added. We made it to my new home just after two and we started moving my belongings in immediately.
Admittedly the apartment was way too big for just me but I liked the extra space, it was different from the tiny two-bedroom apartment I had grown up in. The first thing I made sure to unpack and put up was the bed. I still hadn't told Steve I wasn’t actually sleeping in the bed, but he didn’t need to know that. After that clothes were sorted through and put in their respective places. With our enhanced strength and stamina, we had the whole place relatively furnished in just under two hours. We stopped for dinner when everything had been brought up from the moving truck.
The day went by fast with us talking and laughing like we used to, it was a good change of pace from my usual aimlessly roaming around my apartment alone. But, all good things have to come to an end and Steve had to leave. He pulled me into a tight hug, almost crushing me, and wouldn’t let go until I pinky promised to call him several times a week. I just laughed and promised him I would. I was sad watching him walk down the hallway to the stairs.
I turned back into my apartment and closed the door, locking it behind me. I stared at the box littering the floor and decided to get to work unpacking the rest of what we hadn’t gotten earlier.
Most of my belongings I found in thrift stores and antique shops around the city. It may have been the twenty-first century now, but that wasn’t stopping me from making my home a comfortable, familiar space. If you walked in from the outside world, you would have thought you had been transported to the past with how much authentic 1940s and before things I had littered about. Some things had been saved from the apartment we lived in in the forties. I learned a few weeks before we came back from the retreat that Peggy had been the one to put everything in storage after they had failed to find Steve and me in the ice. I had gone through all of it and took out what I wanted to take with me and Steve had done the same. I was thankful Peggy had done what she did, otherwise, everything would have been lost to time.
Tumblr media
That night as I tried to sleep, I realized it was a little easier to relax. DC was a whole lot quieter than New York, there was no honking or yelling every two seconds to keep me awake. I was left alone in almost complete silence, which for others may be worse than being bombarded with noise, but I didn’t mind. I fell asleep almost an hour after laying down for the night and had a restless sleep. I woke up many times in the night covered in sweat, but I couldn't remember the dreams, anything I could remember dissipated as soon as I opened my eyes.
I woke up again very early the next morning, the clock on my wall said it was four forty-five. It was still dark out, but I could hear birds starting to chirp. I crawled out from under the bed frame and went to put on some exercise clothes. Running always helped to clear my mind after not being able to get any sort of rest. The run itself didn’t take long, even though it was seven miles, any normal person would be exhausted but I had barely broken a sweat. I did get to see some nice places, taking a route around the zoo, to the National Cathedral, and then back around to the Dupont Circle neighborhood, where my apartment was. The sun was just starting to come up as I made my way back into my building.
Although I had just moved in the day before, I was ready to start finding some sort of job. The money SHIELD was giving me to help assimilate back into the world comfortably was appreciated, but I wanted to make my own way in life without their help. Finding a job was going to be harder than it used to be, but I did have expertise in several areas. Upon being unfrozen, along with the driving tests, SHIELD created a new resume for me. I had degrees in history pertaining to the 1940s, World War II, and several of the New Deal programs, with a specialty in the SSR. I was also given a Veteran ID, although I don’t really know how that one works because I definitely was not a part of the apparent ongoing fighting in Afghanistan. I still looked twenty-four, I doubt anyone would believe it.
Anyway, I had interviews lined up for today at the Smithsonian, and hopefully, the resume that SHIELD created and my knowledge would be enough to land a job. I had already figured that I would be volunteering at the local VFW. I knew I could find people there to relate to and hopefully be able to make some friends.

Ranking MCU Captain America figures
Before I begin, I want to clarify this is about my enjoyment of these characters and NOT who i think are the best morality or power wise. I specify because I think my first two entries will upset some people and I want to say, this list is NOT in order of how much I agree with these characters' values. I have a heavy favoritism towards theme and character interaction and that is where a lot of my enjoyment from media comes from. So, let's begin.
6. Captain America: CW, IW, and Endgame
Tumblr media
I'm separating Steve into two because around CW he starts making decisions that really frustrate me.
Now I do think there is a lot to like still! His conviction to his morals during the Accords and continuing arc about government distrust is great, his stand against Thanos in IW is amazing, he is a lot of fun to watch during the New York part of the time heist, and lifting Mjolnir was legit my best theater moment ever and i will NEVER forget it.
However, in CW he starts making some awful decisions. In CW, he kisses Sharon like, days after Peggy's funeral. While on it's own it's already kinda creepy, Endgame retroactively makes this even worse. It goes on to also have grave consequence because he and Sam asked Sharon to break the law for them and never followed through to help her, which was pretty awful of them. At least Sam tries to make it right in TFATWS, but since Steve left that wrong on Sharon never gets reconciled from him.
I also think that his decision to keep Bucky and Howard's history a secret from Tony was really, really stupid. While I side with him during the fight, the fact that Steve "doesn't like when his teammates withhold information" Rogers didn't tell Tony this then walked into a Winter Soldier facility with Bucky and Tony during the most strained time of their relationship was just begging for that conflict.
He is barely in IW and while his stand against Thanos is a great moment, his decision to not let Vision kill himself is very frustrating. "We don't trade lives" then he goes to Wakanda to let thousands of soldiers die while they try and get the stone out, really dude?
I don't think going back in time in Endgame was inherently a bad ending but things he does to make it happen really frustrates me. He shows no signs of mourning Bucky or Sam at all. And then for the sake of surprise for the audience, he never tells Sam what he's doing and that is so awful. Sam dedicates 4 years of his life helping Steve with a good portion of it being on the run. Sam was with Steve more during the present than ANYONE else. Then Steve just leaves without telling him and shows back up to drop a ton of responsibility on Sam that he didn't ask for. Now Sam is an amazing Cap but it's frustrating to see that a lot of TFATWS is fallout of Steve's bad decisions in these three movies.
5. Captain America: John Walker
Tumblr media
Now hold on, I hate this man. I think he does some awful things, so why is he above anyone else? Just because he isn't frustrating to me, he fits thematically and has good interactions with others in TFATWS.
His character really adds to the themes and discussions of white privilege, Supremacy, as well as how the US military treats their soldiers like shit, and I think he is an interesting character to watch as he starts out edging the line of evil and by the end of episode 4 crosses it. While I think Bucky was overall a bit too chummy with him in 6, I think it was all mostly in character for them. Sam and Bucky were up against 6 super soldiers and Batroc in a highly crowded city with lots of important people, it makes sense to me that they take his help in this scenario. They also never leave him alone which indicates distrust.
I also really like the moment where he drops the shield to help the truck. He is a shitty person but he is shown as a person who at least wants to do good, even though any challenge to that he goes off the rails. It is such a black and white scenario, help the truck of innocents, and I like that he does it. It also adds to the hatred of him as a person because it shows he clearly knows better but chooses to ignore it, which makes him even more despicable.
I think it is very important that a man like him bore the title of Captain America because it reminds us all that yes, it is very easy that a man like him represents America as it is and that we need to do better than him.
I like watching him and that's why he's above CW on Steve because he isn't making aggravatingly out of character decisions all of the time and he works very well within the themes of the show.
With me loving him in the context of TFATWS, in later appearances he does have a lot of potential to drop to last pretty easily, but as of now when he just is in that show, I appreciate his character a lot.
4. Red Guardian
Tumblr media
I kinda like this character and idk how to feel about it
He doesn't fit Black Widow very much so he is kinda low but I mean, he's just kinda fun. His story about Captain America and the USSR is pretty non-related to the others and rather undeveloped which is frustrating, and he does very little plot significant things. He leads Nat and Yelena to Melina and that's about it. He distracts Taskmaster for a while but he kinda is just getting tossed around until Melina shows up. He isn't very important.
But I do like what I see and do hope we see more of him. They never pretend he's a great person and I do appreciate that he gets called on it constantly. His knuckles having Karl Marx on them kills me and overall he's pretty humorous and fun to watch. He also has a few great moments thematically that I love. When he comforts Yelena after the dinner scene and sings her favorite song as a kid? So heartwarming. When he took Taskmaster's shield when fleeing the Red Room I laughed at his ridiculousness but it lead to a pretty great moment, when he throws the shield through the windshield without hesitation to save Melina. It's a great moment to show how he's letting go of his past and obsessions to be there for his family.
I hope we see more of him, his overall lack of importance and stereotypical behavior kinda holds him back but I see so much potential in him.
3. Agent Carter
Tumblr media
As of today she has been in exactly one 30 minute episode, but what I see I really like. Her laughter of surprise when she takes the tesseract is really endearing, her sword and muscles and height make my wlw heart patter, and I do like the difference in her relationship with Steve in this universe, where they both are of incredible capabilities but neither are given any respect for how they were born. We get that in TFA too but I really like that it is a constant theme in this iteration while in TFA it gets dropped a bit after Steve receives the serum.
There is very little of her so I can't really put her higher yet, but given more time she very well may rise up on this list but she had an excellent first showing.
2. Pre-CW Captain America: Steve Rogers
Tumblr media
This man is a joy.
He is such an endearing scrappy little guy in the beginning of TFA and I love his commitment to doing the right thing. He still very much acts like a guy who just gained 120 pounds of muscle during that movie and it's endearing. The way he grows into his own skin in TWS is amazing as we see him really step in to what he can accomplish physically as well as his authority and leadership.
His Whedonisms in the first two Avengers films kinda bug me, they treat him like an old man when he isn't. Biologically he's like, early 30's at most here. He grew up as a fighter in Brooklyn then served in the military, he wouldn't care if his teammates swear, but overall it's tolerable.
I LOVE this man's commitment to transparency. He struggles when allies are not transparent and he shows nothing but transparency and I love that that is a constant for him (which is why I separate him from CW on)
Everyone loves this guy and over 90% of criticisms I see for him come after AoU, and that's for good reason, this guy is so loveable.
1. Captain America: Sam Wilson
Tumblr media
He's so good, guys
I want to talk about Sam before the suit because he is amazing before it. He runs counseling for veterans, a profession very becoming of a superhero and it speaks to his incredible empathy and compassion that is on full display. I also think the fact that he dedicated 2 years to finding Bucky is not appreciated enough. Sure he was following Steve but he still spent 2 years trying to find Bucky, a person who tried to murder him. Yet he understands it isn't Bucky's fault and tries to help him anyway. I also really like that he is the first to speak out against the Accords. He doesn't wait for Steve or anyone else, he sees red flags and he is out and I really, really love that about him.
Then I love how long it takes for him to choose to become Cap and how much he contemplates it. He has to contemplate the legacy of Steve, if he wants to wear the symbol of this country, the pressures of being a black man as Cap, the legacy that John added to it, the pressures from Bucky and the pressures from Isaiah, and also his own legacy he carved for himself as the Falcon. It's a huge decision with a lot of weight and so many people pressuring him but he takes his time and chooses what is right for him, and I really love that about him. These other characters are all Caps from near the start but he transitions into one after years of knowing him as the Falcon and I love that he doesn't take this decision lightly.
Also as Cap he's just really cool. His decisions to not take the serum as well as try like hell to get Karli to step down speak to his humility and compassion. And while many describe his speech as bland it's still uniquely him. Yes the speech doesn't solve any problems but that isn't what he's doing, he's asking America and the world to get to actually solving them and that is an aspect of him we don't see much since Steve's propaganda days, his direct relation to the public.
Also his suit and wings are just awesome, I argue his action is the most fun to watch out of any of these characters.
Anyway yeah that's the list, I know people won't agree with me so let's try and keep discussion civil, alright?

Marvel Part 1
For this marathon, I’m going to be doing things a little differently. Each movie gets one paragraph, and the posts will be split up by Avengers movies. Doing a full review for each was going to be too many posts and I honestly got a little overwhelmed. Anyway, for this Marvel marathon, we decided to watch the movies in chronological order within the canon, as opposed to the order in which they came out. So without further ado, enjoy my 20 paragraphs about all of the movies in the MCU.
1/16/21
Tumblr media
Captain America: The First Avenger – Joe Johnston, 2011
Starting with Captain America was a curious place to begin the marathon. I quite liked it, and it made the ending I knew was coming feel like a better bookend with Cap and Peggy. Perhaps it’s unfair to review this movie in relation to the others that haven’t come up, but since I have seen all of the movies already I can’t help it. Watching this first in the sequence further solidified my alliance to Team Cap, which I’m okay with. Cap’s arc in this movie is great, he gets to grow from an idealistic, bullied little boy into a jaded man who is completely alone. It didn’t really hit me how lonely he is in The Avengers and why he’d cling so hard to everything that meant to him, but watching this movie first in line made it all make sense. He was the first Avenger, so of course they all band around him. He cares the most because he’s the one who set it all into motion. And that includes the Tesseract! Having an Infinity Stone pop up in the first movie also makes for a better overall arc, leading us to the inevitable Infinity War.
Tumblr media
Captain Marvel – Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, 2019
I do like this movie, mostly because I like Brie Larson. I think she was great, and her acting was NOT wooden. Yes, some things were over the top or on the nose. The nineties references were a lot, and there was a lot of girl-power things too. You know what though? I’m okay with that. Nineties nostalgia is very real. And I love seeing a woman who is unapologetically screaming at aliens and obnoxiously overpowered. Superman doesn’t get crap for acting too flat or turning back time. Let Carol Danvers blow up ships and swirl around with her glowy hair and ask who’s next. I teared up at the montage of her falling down and getting back up. She fights like a girl. A human girl, who falls behind, and has to make up for it. Who is constantly criticized for letting her emotions get the better of her. I think she should be allowed to reach her full potential, and not owe anything to anyone. Timeline-wise, this feels a little shoehorned in, but it’s fun to see Ronan before he shows up again in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Tumblr media
Iron Man – Jon Favreau, 2008
You know, I can see why this is the movie that spawned an entire franchise. I did forget just how obnoxious Tony was in the first movie though. It makes his journey from irresponsible billionaire playboy to...okay, he still has way too much money, but he grows so much as a person. He learns how to be a father figure, he stops taking things in his life for granted, he cares less about money for money’s sake and tries to take care of the environment. This movie is very much a war movie, not a superhero movie. It’s extremely self-contained, and a large part of the beginning sees Tony as a prisoner, fighting for his life and using his genius to think his way to freedom in his iron suit. Tony is a compelling character, and I almost feel bad for hating on him for all these years. This sets the stage for his development throughout the other films, and it is quite the development indeed.
Tumblr media
Iron Man 2 – Jon Favreau, 2010
I feel bad for saying this, but Don Cheadle is a much better War Machine than Terence Howard. I’m sorry. Their dynamic is very fun in this film, and I liked seeing Tony with a friend. Also, Sam Rockwell as the secondary villain was so great. He’s great in any movie, but seeing him doing his best Tony Stark impression was top-notch. And Black Widow gets introduced here! Overall, this is a fairly forgettable movie in the Iron Man sequence, but it’s still very exciting. Tony and Pepper get the chance to flesh out their relationship a little more, which is nice. She often fades into the background, reduced to a token love interest, so I appreciated that she had something to do here. This movie is the first one that feels like it follows the superhero formula of having several villains and a few protagonists. It is still quite exciting and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Iron Man is a good character and he can hold his own in a movie.
Tumblr media
Thor – Kenneth Branagh, 2011
I love Thor. This was my favorite Avengers movie for a long time. One, because Hawkeye is introduced in it (he’s my favorite Avenger and you can fight me on that). Two, Loki is hot. Three, Natalie Portman as a boss-ass lady scientist? We love to see it. Now, watching this again, I liked it significantly less, which was a little bit of a bummer. I’m not sure what Kenneth Branagh was thinking but there are so. Many. Dutch. Angles. I was dizzy and off-kilter the whole time. I felt like my neck was sore after watching this. That being said, it’s still a good story. Thor has always been a lovable dramatic doofus, and even though everyone took this as seriously as Shakespeare it’s still quite funny. Unintentionally so, perhaps, but there were inklings of Thor being the funny one long before Ragnarok. I enjoy the disparate tones that come with the wildly different settings of Asgard and Earth. Plus, having this be the lead-in to The Avengers feels like it sets everything up very nicely. We have our villain, we have our motivation, we even have in-world explanations for aliens and magic. Everyone has been introduced, so it’s time for the big showdown.

The Avengers – Joss Whedon, 2012
The first Avengers movie will always have a special place in my heart. This wsa the first midnight premiere I ever went to, and I always think of how special it was, seeing this in theaters with my friends (and her dad, who had to drive us there). On a story note, having watched all the movies in two days leading up to this made it so much clearer what was going on. I’m easily distracted and therefore easily confused, so I never quite understood all the details of Thanos’s plan and Loki and the Tesseract and all that. Watching before, I didn’t mind too much. In addition to being easily distracted I am very easily entertained, so I was perfectly content to be swept up in the spectacle of it all and go along for the ride. It turns out this is a good movie! The interactions, which seemed stilted before, were realistic considering no one knew each other. And all of these people have been through a LOT before they made it to this point. By the big fight, they aren’t close friends, more so tenuous allies. Honestly, that makes it more interesting to see the way they work together. It shows that all of these people are genuinely good, and doing their best. And I’ll watch any movie where the good guys win.

why don't you like endgame or civil war
((hoo buddy, idk what brought this up but salt under the cut!! Like... a lot of salt - specifically regarding Endgame lmao
I’m gonna start off with CACW because it’s a short response lol
I don’t like it simply because I was done with the infighting between the Avengers. The found family crumbs we were given in Endgame was something I really wanted to see, and them just... ripping them apart frustrated me lol
honestly, the movie was... fine? Idk, I found it to be a lil slow for my taste (it felt like it just dragged on when I watched it in theaters), and I just don’t care for it in general  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also, ngl, I’m really bummed that Captain America: Serpent Society was a joke announcement because that sounds dope as hell and I really wanted to see that before I realized it’d been a joke dfgjhdsfhj
but, yeah, literally just because CACW is specifically an infighting movie annoys me to no end so I just won’t watch it again dgsfjhsfdhj
now, Endgame?
fuck Endgame
I. have a lot of issues with it, all of which are major grievances throughout the fandom. I’m pissed they killed Natasha and didn’t even bother giving her a fucking funeral because, I quote from Joe Russo, “Well, Tony does not have another movie. Tony is done. And Natasha has another film. And Marvel Universe obviously does not have to move forward linearly anymore. But that character still has more screen time coming.” (see here) and that annoys the hell out of me. She’s getting another movie - great! So you killed one of the few characters doing her fucking best to keep everything together at the compound, the one who was taking charge, give her a big role, and then murk her and... give her nothing but a brief mention at the end. Like... what the fuck? Natasha deserved so much better than what she was given. Tony’s funeral could’ve (and, frankly, should’ve) been a funeral for him, Natasha, and Vision because god forbid we see anyone mourn Vision other than Wanda
(actually this post covers how Endgame fucked over the MCU women perfectly, though Wanda’s not mentioned :c )
plus... Tony’s not done lol - he’s still a massive figure in the films/shows despite RDJ not acting in them, so his character has left shockwaves that aren’t dying any time soon. Natasha... basically disappeared, and I believe she would’ve been dropped completely if it wasn’t for the fact she does have a film coming out soon. Which, frankly, seems awesome and all, but it’s a film that goes back to post-CACW pre-IW and... frankly doesn’t give me any reason to understand why that means she didn’t get a funeral. She’s not coming back in future movies/shows that are in present MCU timeline - her movie is set in the past. She could’ve gotten a decent sendoff
now, Clint’s arc as Ronin rubs me the wrong way. I know it’s a huge thing in the comics, and it’s not him taking a different mantle that I have an issue with. It’s the fact he, a white man, went around murdering people and got off scot-free. Yes, he was targeting genuinely bad people, but... to show that, they specifically singled out Mexican cartels and the yakuza (Japanese mafia, essentially) - so, in other words, the bad guys were people of color! I feel like I don’t need to explain how fucked up that is. And, to clarify, I love Clint! Clint is honestly one of my favorite characters, and the whole thing was just handled... poorly in the film
Tony’s arc genuinely hurts. This is a man who has suffered for years and has tried to make things right, and finally got a chance to settle down. He finally retired from the Avengers, finally settled down, and had a fucking life he could enjoy despite his ghosts, and yet... His arc ends with a message of “tortured soul finally gets rest by dying”. Because, y’know, it’s great seeing yet another long-suffering character only reaching peace through death, because god forbid they let characters heal! He could’ve still caused the second Snap, and he could’ve survived. He could’ve finally been able to step away for good and focus on his family, focus on recovering, and be truly happy. What’s so wrong with letting him stay alive so he can rest and be with his family? What’s so wrong with letting a long-suffering character finally find peace after one last bang?
plus it pisses me off that they’re now using him as a reasoning as to why bad things are still happening. Why is this person the bad guy? Because Tony Stark somehow may or may not have done something that hurt them! Even though most of that really stems from Howard or Obadiah. Tony just ends up getting the blame in their place. He’s just an easy target to use, much like the tesseract seems to be the go-to answer for why things go wrong. But this is a different train of thought
Steve’s ending pisses me off just as much as the next person lmao. You take a character who has acknowledged he no longer belongs in the past (which, funnily enough, was written by the Russos), aaaaaaand have him go back to the past while ignoring two important people in his life that were still right there. He got Bucky and Sam back, and he leaves them. His arc is ruined within a matter of minutes, and it paints a hella bad picture of him in the process. He goes back in time to stay with Peggy (which ultimately destroys her own arc, and the fact she’s a person outside of her relationship (or lack thereof) with him because, y’know, why have her be able to move on and be her own person?), and we’re supposed to believe he’s fine with everything he knows from the future? Fine with knowing Bucky’s trapped with HYDRA and is suffering as the Winter Soldier? Fine with knowing HYDRA has infested SHIELD from day one? Fine with knowing Howard and Maria are going to die? Fine with royally fucking up the timelines? We’re supposed to believe he sat back and did nothing with all of that? They could’ve had him still hand the shield over to Sam - they could’ve let Steve stay an Avenger without the mantle
also the fact the Russos said he didn’t recognize Red Skull when he returned to Vormir to return the soul stone? Like... what the fuck?? Not to mention he literally returns the stone to Vormir, which “soul for a soul”, and they didn’t bring Nat back that way??
and now onto Thor. Thor... holy fuck is this hitting something personal for me. Thor was ridden with guilt - he was furious with himself, hated himself, and blamed himself for failing to stop the Snap. He fell into a massive depression, and... was promptly danced around as laughing stock. Like, “oh! look at Thor! he’s fat and drunk because he’s depressed haha!” - like fuck off. It’s not funny in any form. His suffering was made into a joke and it pisses me off because I suffer from depression. A lot of people suffer from depression. It’s not funny. It’s fucking terrifying at times. I wasted a shit ton of money on a stupid online sim game because it was a distraction - it gave me... god, I wouldn’t even say temporary happiness, but it gave me something to temporarily help, and I still hate myself for doing it. It was a poor decision on my part, and I wish I could change it. And, during that time, I was scared because I couldn’t see myself pulling out of it. I thought I was gonna feel that way forever. I called out of work multiple times because there were days I couldn’t stop crying (something I still feel horrible for doing), I couldn’t get myself to contact any of my friends for months, and it was all because the medication I was on at the time... stopped working. Thankfully, my depression doesn’t work in a way that makes me a danger to myself, so that wasn’t an issue, but it still fucking sucked. And to see a character that I could relate to on such a personal level treated as laughing stock fucking hurt. I’m not sharing this for sympathy - I’m sharing this because it Thor’s arc hit home and it’s literally the main reason why I will not watch Endgame again
this is more of a nitpick than anything else, but... I didn’t really care for Carol in it tbh? Which is unfortunately because Captain Marvel is one of my absolute favorite movies! And I’m well aware she was introduced in Endgame while CM was being drafted, but that in itself is annoying?? Because Carol was originally going to be introduced in AoU, but was cut because it wasn’t going to introduce her character properly. And yet they decide to introduce her character in a clusterfuck of a movie before her movie is in the final stages, and proceed to release her movie first and then give a complete different characterization in her following appearance
honestly I just wanna cover this now to clarify some things regarding Carter and her backstory: the only reason I keep Endgame as is is because it felt easier for me to do so for the purpose of bending canon for specific threads. I wanted to stay as true to the given plots as possible to help with fudging of both the movies and her background, and also because I didn’t want anyone to feel like I was trying to force my own headcanons onto them, y’know?
I’m just gonna plug this here because fuck it lol, but I did start a fix-it fic regarding Endgame that you can read here! I... probably won’t finish it tbh, and I haven’t gone over it in a hot minute so it might be riddled with errors ahah - plus I’m not sure about how I wrote the characters! I get nervous when writing canon characters because I feel like I’ll miss their characterization completely, which is actually why I,,, rarely rp canon characters dgfjhgsfdhj

Word Count: 2.6K

A/N: @bookish-bucky @drinkerofcoffeewriterofwords and @mydoctorwho13 asked for a part 2 to Not So Bad so here it is! (I hope y’all don’t mind that I tagged you/lmk if you want me to untag you/idk why it didn’t let me tag all of you). More notes at the bottom!
___
The cat was out of the bag.
Well, really just one cat was out of its bag.
Basically your secret was out and it was entirely your fault.
You were at Howard’s lab for the third time for even more tests. All of the previous tests had been inconclusive, though that came as no surprise to you. You had engineered them to be that way, pretending to suddenly and uncontrollably levitate in response to random tests, doing your best to ensure that Howard would be unable to make any connections.
But today you were a bit distracted.
You couldn’t help it, you were only human after all. And when Daniel Sousa is flashing an award-winning grin while Howard tried his most bizarre test ever (repeatedly trying to scare you in hopes it would spark a levitation reaction), well, any woman in your position would’ve done the same.
You jumped. No, you did more than just jump.
Howard Stark snuck up behind you and yelled while shaking your shoulders and you flew. Shot straight up in the air like a rocket, feeling entirely like your teenage self with absolutely no control of your abilities.
And then, to make matters worse, you disappeared.
You assumed it must’ve been the embarrassment of smacking your head on the ceiling that caused the sudden invisibility though the ‘why’ didn’t really matter anymore. What mattered was you were invisible and Daniel and Howard were shouting your name.
Except, no, that didn’t matter right now either. All you could focus on was the sudden tightening in your chest and the fact that you were finding it harder to breathe. The shouting faded to the background as you began to feel trapped in your own skin.
I have to get out of here.
So you ran.
You didn’t even think as you flew out of Howard’s lab, racing down the hall. You didn’t stop until you were in the bathroom, door locked behind you. You slid down to the floor, knees pulled tight against your chest as you leaned against the door.
Briefly, you noticed that you were still invisible, though the thought left as soon as it came. You also vaguely noticed the tears streaming down your face, though you were unaware of when they had begun. Your thoughts zipped back to the lab and the concern lacing Daniel and Howard’s voices as they called out to you and for a moment you felt bad for running away but that too was pulled away in the hurricane of your mind. Your whole body felt abuzz and you couldn’t think or breathe as a feeling of utter helplessness settled into your bones.
You tried to remember what Tony had told you to do- something about box breathing exercises and the five senses- but you weren’t sure that you were in control of your mind anymore.
“Y/N, if you can hear me name four street names from where you grew up.” Daniel’s voice rang through the bathroom door. Before you could even consider how he had found you or why he needed to know you answered,
“Main Street, Birch Street, Higgins Drive, Cobalt Lane.” The words were stuttered and separated by harsh inhales and exhales.
“Name your five favorite movies.”
“La La Land, Ferris Bueller, Beauty and the Beast, Spirited Away, Inception.” The words were smoother this time, though tears still streamed down your face and your bones still felt heavy and your skin restrictive.
“Okay, name ten presidents.”
“Uh, Ellis, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, FDR… Teddy Roosevelt, Eisenhower… Reagan, Nixon… Kennedy.” Your voice was steady as you spoke, your chest no longer heaving with sobs and shaking breaths.
“Good. Now name seven state capitals.”
“Albany, Trenton, Tallahassee, Nashville, Lansing, Richmond, Raleigh.” When you opened your eyes you noticed you were visible again, though when it had happened you weren’t sure.
“Are you okay?” Daniel’s voice came through the door, soothing you more than you realized.
“Yeah.” You answered quietly, your voice raw.
“If you’re comfortable with it, will you open the door?”
Your soul turned to mush at his words, Daniel Sousa- ever the gentleman. You felt an immense amount of comfort in the man despite only knowing him a few days but you were scared. You had just fully exposed your powers and had a panic attack, you hadn’t been this vulnerable to another person in years.
“It’s okay if you don’t want to, I just want to make sure you’re okay,” Daniel spoke again, no judgment lacing his voice, only kindness, compassion, and caring.
You stood slowly, your muscles aching as you stretched them from their tensed position, and unlocked the door, opening it to reveal Daniel. Your eyes immediately jumped to his face, his expression almost pained though it changed as soon as he saw you, morphing into relief and something else you couldn’t quite place.
“How did you know how to do that?” You blurted out, though you had really wanted the first thing you said to him to be “thank you” or “I’m sorry.”
Instead, apparently your brain was preoccupied with how the man before you had walked you through your panic attack.
“Oh, uh…” He rubbed the back of his neck nervously. “Well after the war… ptsd and all, I’m no stranger to panic attacks.”
You softened at his confession, forgetting, despite his limp and his cane, that the man before you had gone through a war and had not come out unscathed. Before you even knew what you were doing you were hugging him. He let out a small “oof” as you wrapped your arms around his middle, squeezing slightly.
Tentatively, he wrapped his arms around you in return.
“Thank you,” you finally mumbled into his suit jacket. “I’m sorry.”
“Why are you apologizing?” Daniel asked, confusion etched into his features as he pulled away from your embrace.
“I-I disappeared and I ran and I panicked and you had to come get me and deal with all that.” You gestured wildly as you spoke, words fumbling together in your rush to get it all out.
“Y/N, helping you isn’t a burden to me,” Daniel spoke softly, tilting your chin up so you could see the sincerity in his eyes. “And what you just went through- what you’ve been going through with these... strange abilities, your reaction was completely justified.”
Your heart clenched at his words. He was speaking to you with such honesty and openness but you were lying to him. You sighed, taking a step back, his arms falling away from your waist and you suddenly felt cold without the heat of his embrace.
“I-” You faltered, needing to take a breath before you could continue. “I need to tell you and Howard something.”
 ___
“What exactly were you hoping to accomplish with this lie, Miss Y/L/N?” You winced at the use of your last name. Daniel hadn’t used it since that first night in his house.
You tried to shrink into yourself, considering going invisible once again to escape the look of betrayal Daniel was fixing you with.
“Are you a spy?” He was angry and betrayed and you could see him trying to reason this out to himself, but you knew he’d never even fathom the truth. “Was this an attempt to infiltrate SHIELD? Who do you work for?”
“Daniel,” you whispered, and the stern look you were fixed with told you everything you needed to know. The only way out of this was the full truth, timeline be damned.
“I work with a team of powered people called The Avengers.” You sighed. “About two weeks ago, two of our members stole the Tesseract from Camp Lehigh in order to save the world from an alien who wiped out fifty percent of the universe. After we succeeded, I was tasked with returning the Tesseract but due to a malfunction I’m stuck here.”
“I’m pretty sure we would’ve noticed the Tesseract being stolen and the destruction of half of the world,” Daniel said crossly, clearly not believing you though you didn’t blame him.
“You wouldn’t have because for you none of that has happened yet and I returned the Tesseract immediately after it was taken.”
“You mean this happened in the future?” Howard finally spoke, looking at you with a newfound curiosity.
You nodded. “In the year 2023.”
Howard let out a low whistle at the date but there was a gleam in his eyes like a kid in a candy store.
“I have so many questions.”
You smiled sadly, “Surely you understand that I can’t tell you what happens without destroying the timeline.”
“No, we don’t understand.” Daniel snapped, “Because time travel doesn’t exist.”
“Daniel I can’t make you believe me, I literally have no way to prove this to you,” you sighed, not wanting to argue with the man. “I didn’t even mean to drag you into this, I came here for Howard’s help fixing my device so I could go back.”
“If it makes you feel any better, if I was a spy, I’d have absolutely nothing to report. I didn’t get anywhere near SHIELD or any of Howard’s projects.” You tried to smile, though you felt like crying. “You’re a good agent and a good leader, Daniel Sousa, but most importantly you’re a good man and I am not deserving of your help or your trust.”
Daniel’s eyes softened at your words, though he still held a defensive stance. The lab remained silent for a few minutes but your eyes never left Daniel’s face, observing the flurry of emotions that resided there.
“Time travel would explain those movies and presidents I’ve never heard of.”
You cringed slightly, not realizing you had potentially blown the timeline during your panic attack.
“Yeah, those won’t come out for another few decades,” you rubbed the back of your neck embarrassedly, “And I suppose I ruined a few elections for you.”
“I’ll live,” Daniel responded with a shrug before his eyes widened in realization, “I will live right?”
“Honestly? I have no idea what your life looks like. I didn’t pay a lot of attention in school.” You answered sheepishly, a small smile gracing your features at the forgiveness, however small, that came with Daniel’s statement.
“I’m not even going to ask because I already know that I must be remembered for my genius because you came to me for help,” Howard smirked cockily, “Now, let’s get your time machine fixed and get you home.”
“Oh hell, you did not need that ego boost,” you groaned.
Howard had the audacity to wink.
___
The next week was difficult. You were still staying with Daniel but the dynamic between the two of you had changed entirely. There were no more soft, shared glances, or meaningful looks, or chats over coffee in the morning. In fact, Daniel seemed to be avoiding looking at you at all, only doing so when absolutely necessary. He had thrown all his energy into getting you back to your time.
It broke your heart a bit, though you’d never admit it. You’d known the man for a little over a week, you couldn’t be getting all teary-eyed because he wasn’t looking at you anymore. Plus, wasn’t he doing exactly what you wanted by helping you get back? Still, it felt a little as though he was trying to get rid of you.
That week had felt like torture. A constant turmoil of indecipherable emotions swirling inside you and you had no idea what to do with it all. So you pushed on. Pushed all the way to the day Howard fixed your time travel watch.
“I think I’ve finally got it!” He exclaimed, gleefully. “I’ve invented time travel!”
“Not so fast, Stark.” You chided, “My team invented time travel, you’ve just fixed it.”
Howard merely rolled his eyes, muttering something about “no fun” and brought you the device. Daniel was standing off to the side, eyes refusing to meet yours, consistent with the past week. You sighed, accepting the watch and sliding it onto your wrist.
“Well, we’ve only got one shot,” you may have been stalling, though you wouldn’t admit it to yourself. “Are you sure it’s right, Howard?”
“Honestly? No. But I’m sure that I have no other solutions than what I’ve already done.”
“Is this a good idea?” You asked aloud, to no one in particular.
“Y/N, you need to get back.” Daniel sighed, lifting his eyes to meet yours and you thought you saw grief in them. “Your team is probably worried about you.”
“If this works how it’s supposed to, I’ll be back just seconds after I left,” you shook your head sadly, “Just in time for retirement cake.”
“Retirement?” His head was cocked to the side like a confused puppy and your heart leapt into your throat at the first unprofessional conversation you’ve shared in a week.
You nodded, “One of my teammates is stepping away to settle down with his boyfriend.”
“His boyfriend?” Daniel questioned skeptically and you forgot what time you had been stuck in. You knew from Steve and Bucky’s stories that the 30s and 40s were not a good time to be lgbt but you could tell by the way that he had spoken that Daniel didn’t hold any of those biases. It was just one more thing about the future to be confused about.
“You’d love them,” you whispered honestly.
He probably would, the three of them have so much in common between the war and SHIELD and Peggy Carter and Howard Stark. For a moment you let yourself imagine a world in which you had been born in this era, in which Bucky had never been captured and Steve never frozen. A world where you could fall in love with Daniel Sousa and live happily ever after surrounded by friends.
You shook yourself out of it. There was no future for you here and there was a team waiting for you in the future. You sighed, punching the date and time into your watch. You were out of time.
“What if I didn’t go?” You blurted out, unable to contain the question any longer.
“Y/N, your team-” Daniel started.
“Doesn’t need me. They all have lives and happiness and fulfillment and-“ you shuddered as you released this word vomit of feelings you didn’t even realize you had before you whispered, “And maybe I deserve some of that myself.”
Daniel Sousa made you feel cared for and appreciated in a way nobody ever had in the 21st century and you’d be damned if you gave that up without a fight.
“What about the timeline?”
“Fuck the timeline!” You exclaimed and Howard giggled and your cursing.
“Daniel,” you sighed. “You make me feel things I’ve never felt before and I don’t wanna put too much pressure on this, but I think meeting you might be the best thing that’s ever happened to me. But if you don’t feel the same way tell me now and I’ll go back.”
You were standing right in front of him now, having closed the distance during your speech.
“Y/N,” he sighed, his eyes swimming with emotions you couldn’t read though he looked at you with such tenderness that you thought you might melt right there as he reached up a hand to cup your cheek.
You weren’t entirely sure, but you thought you might’ve muttered “kiss me” before his lips were on yours, soft and warm and you felt like fireworks were erupting in your stomach. It was a short kiss, no more than a few seconds, but it confirmed a number of things for you. The most significant thing being that you were never going back to 2023.
___
A/N: A few things: 1. the street names listed while Y/N is having a panic attack are actually copied directly from Jessica Jones. 2. The listing miscellaneous things (street names, movies, presidents, etc.) is something my friend has had me do when I’ve had panic attacks. Idk if that works for everyone, but it certainly has helped me in the past and I can really only write from my own experiences. 3. I lowkey wanna write a oneshot for the fantasy Y/N has towards the end where she’s born during the same time period as Stucky, Peggy, Howard, and Sousa and she probably joins SHIELD which is how she meets Sousa (Edit: this exists now and you can find it here!). Idk, let me know what you think!

Notes from tie-in MCU comics:
Part 1:
[DISCLAIMER: I was making those notes without actually writing down from which comic they come from, so now I am... well... confused about the proper placement of them, but I tried to discern them anyway.]
CAPTAIN AMERICA THE FIRST AVENGER:
Lol, Zola was developing exo-skeleton looking like Iron Man suit and Vanko's suit in 1934. I kind of think part of Steve's dislike of Iron Man was because of that exo-suit. Also, Steve just saved the guy in a suit.
"The chain is only as strong as its weakest link" said twice to Steve, once by military doctor and second by Schmidt.
Poor Erskine, his family was taken as hostages.
Howards says "carefully open the casing". Steve does smash instead.
Oh no, Red Skull said that weapon can always be taken from you so you have to become the weapon. It echoes the sentiment behind the creation of Iron Man too closely.
Lol, Roosevelt ASKED for Howard PERSONALLY.
"Car is bulletproof!" "and a convertible!" is a funny joke xD
Lol he has bulletproof car because of cigarette's girls angry boyfriends.
Ok, so Howard joined SSR because he HAD BEST FUN IN MONTHS.
Howard has rockets in car and "leaves best toys for himself".
First Steve saves a Nazi from a tank, now he obliterates them with said tank. Pick a side, Steve. I know guy in the armor was helpless, but c'mon. You either don't kill or kill. You cannot just willy nilly choose. BTW does it echo saving Iron Man or smth?
Call back to floating car by a joke about floating tank.
Aw, no, Erskine's family died in concentration camp from typhus. (Those camps were awful, but are not shown in the comics. You better believe that they weren’t very nice places to live even without being overworked and killed by the Nazis).
Oh no, Bucky was nearly killed by SSman! But Howling Commandos stopped him.
Bucky doesn't like his name lol. Also no Jimmy nickname for this guy.
Ok so Howard Stark was based on Hughes and Tony was based on someone Howard hated - Oppenheimer.
Ok, now Phillips made a foreshadowing for Cradle in the AoU. It even looks similar to Project Rebirth.
Oho my theory that Erskine heard Bucky talk to Steve and that doctor knew Steve lied is proved in this comics. They knew, they had a file on him and Erskine just picked him, saving his stupid ass from consequences.
Cap just threw a knife.
IRON MAN 2:
In the comics it looks more as if Obadiah sold Vanko instead of Howard, because Howard looks so surprised at what Vanko did, that it is impossible to assume that he was the one who sent the agents after Vanko. He looks surprised at the whole incident, Vanko betraying him and agents being there to apprehend him. One agent acts as if it was Howard's idea all along, but that line could be also read as just informing a bystander that they will deal with the issue instead.
Tony projected a drone which could clean whole desert full of mines with 100% accuracy and 0% detonation.
Also comics confirm that Tony cannot even have 12h break without Howard coming at him and demanding him to work when he is just a goddamn teenager.
Tony was just fighting for 19h, got a shower and has to go out again.
"If I hear of another innocent being put in a harm's way just to advance some pointless military agenda... there will be consequences" sounds like call back to Hulk.
Hm, Tony made 12 people work on one job? Also Natasha hates being called Nat and she drugged Samantha (the actual PA which applied for Stark Industries) to take her place.
 [As of now those comics confirmed to me that Captain America joined army out of selfish reasons and that Tony was overworking himself as Iron Man and when he wasn't he was either partying, probably to relax in that way, or making new tech which saves lives.]
Lol, Coulson was so excited to look for Captain. Nick even made a joke about finding his fav action figure.
Lol, World Security Council wanted to get Tony's weapons and nearly fired Fury for trying to make Avengers.
Fury is like Tony. He hates his superiors. He will do as they say but won't stop doing what he does.
Lol, Fury got a call Tony will be dead and he jumped out of his goddamn bed asap.
Fury was actively stopping Stern from getting Iron Man by scheduling his meeting with Department of Defense "when Stern is busy" xD
Lol Fury says no to Ross before he hears what he wants. This is so funny.
Ok, so Fury got Lithium Dioxide for Tony, asked if it could be made into permanent cure, how sweet of him, but also learned that it could INSTANTLY KILL HIM instead and still made Natasha basically inject Tony with it WITHOUT CONSENT! So I dunno if he really cared about him when he asked about permanent cure or it was just more optimal for his plans. Also he got the cure during Tony's and Rhodey's battle at the mansion, so we cannot say he had a cure and didn't give it right away when he could.
"Don't blow your cover unless Stark is going to kill himself". Hm. So he wants him alive.
And yeah, he ordered Natasha to stick him with lithium dioxide when he distracted him.
Lol, Fury yelled at Coulson for letting Tony leave the mansion xD
THOR??? (I got lost in my notes, I didn’t write which comic was which)
LOL CLINT CANNOT EVEN TAKE VACATION. Also the speed with which he responded to possible alien crashsite, epic. He jumped and went as if it was Christmas, aww Clint.
Why Clint is giving money back to some store which suffered due to their operation? I mean it was nice and all, but who will give the money back to Clint? Fury?
So it was Hawkeye's idea to let Thor loose.
In the meantime Loki was on scene and tried to get Mjolnir but it didn't respond.
AVENGERS PRELUDE:
Oho, poor Fury, didn't sleep in a few days.
Oho, Fury yelled at Natasha.
"Do not let Ross take Banner, dead or alive". How cute of you, Nick, to confirm that you do not care.
Blonsky is suicidal. Going at Hulk and kicking him in the face? That's a death wish.
Ah so Blonsky is enhanced.
Hahaha, joke about lifting a hammer but applied to the Asgardian sentinel, lol.
Ross literally accessed SHIELD databases.
Natasha was raised in Stalingrad lol.
After seeing Hulk, Abomination and The Leader Natasha finally says it is too much to handle for SHIELD.
Oho, so making Tony finish Howard's project was an objective, not saving his life. He wanted it for Tesseract.
I dunno if he is lying or really was doing this whole shit for the Tesseract. Also points for sticking in WSC's face that Ross nearly destroyed New York thanks to them.
Shield has whiplash suit and it's arc reactor!
THEY ACTIVATED THE SENTINEL AND THEN THEY WANT TO DISMANTLE IT AND MAKE DOZENS SMALL ONES!
Huh, implication that Natasha may beat the whole bunker of SHIELD agents up, because they're men, lol.
So Selvig used the element Stark invented to kick-start the Tesseract after all.
"Good for a laugh from time to time" lol. Clint the comedian.
Why that machine holding a Tesseract looks like Arc Reactor?
Huh so Selvig was Loki and he made a comment about Tony being strange for "badassium".
BLACK WIDOW BACKGROUND IN ONE OF THE COMICS, DUNNO WHICH:
Natasha talks about her cover personalities like vtubers about their avatars.
Fjodorov knows something about stolen bootleg technology of Tony Stark which he managed to acquire?
Natasha really likes narrating her story. Time slows when you have a training? Like roller coaster on first ridge?
"With some small regret, I bid farewell to Tatiana. She's outlived her usefulness" thinks Natasha after she took off her wig and no longer plays Tatiana. "If she were real. She'd be dead". "It's nice though, to pretend while it lasts... that I was ever as innocent as her".
Natasha really likes playing those roles.
Haha, Natasha holds one mission over Coulson's head forever even though he never failed as her control again.
"Part of the reason why I am so good at the undercover work is that I actually like being other people. There is a lot I've done that I regret. When I leave that other identity behind, whether I slip out from underneath it voluntarily or it's ripped away from my grasp, it always hits me like a shock. Like being awakened from a deep sleep, back to who I really am". "It's good to be home". Is she speaking about her slip into Black Widow again as home or is she referring to Russia?
Natasha left a guy dangling from a building and said it could be worse, he could be naked.
"Good man" says Natasha as if she was training guys to obey her will.
Oho, Natasha is interested in someone who wants to be her.
Also she is narrating that police in Russia would not suspect Tatiana to be so resourceful.
Natasha wants to save that girl from herself, because nobody did that for her when she was in the same position.
I mean, Natasha killed some people that day already so I don't get the point of her not killing those guys and saying that she changed, when in the club she killed a few of the goons already and later too. Where is the point of her change if she kills anyway? What is this change about Black Widow - Natasha Romanoff if she kills people but just not always? She cannot claim to change for the better just because she didn't kill two goons. And Sofia should see that not killing all of them doesn't mean she doesn't kill at all. But I guess leaving so many alive still counts for Sofia as Natasha going soft.
Coulson, you idiot, I am happy you came to save Natasha, but Sofia thought those guys were Natasha's back up. It all wouldn't happen if not for you making them appear there. You fucked up everything for Natasha, Coulson.
Uh, Natasha has the same weird shtick Tony does. She blames herself for the decision of her superior? Yeah, she enabled him to make that decision, but it was still his decision to send those men to find Natasha, so their death is on him, not on Natasha.
Huh, so Natasha's model persona Konn feels empty when nobody looks at her, because her whole life was being the centre of attention? It's kind of sexist cover.
She is a hand model and this guy is disgusting. Natasha I agree with those YUCK.
Natasha doing tehee is so weird.
Also playing a "he sent me here so hours would fly by" is so gross, but inner Natasha voice says nothing yet.
Lol the guy just assumed she is stupid, because she made tehee sounds. Like, goddammit, men are so easy to fool. Condescending little creep indeed.
Ok, so Natasha doesn't have any computer knowledge to say what those lines of code are, but she knows Stark can.
Ugh, Natasha, that line about telling his friends that they did something he imagines is so not feminist of you. It just enables creeps like that to objectify women more and treat them like idiots and fucktoys.
Sofia killed the agent even when Natasha gave her what she wanted.
Natasha wants to save lives and often fails at it too.
She jumped off the yacht to save the guy even though she knew he is dead? I mean shot in the head usually means instant death.
She doesn't get lines of code but can upload tracking device on it. Good. Also she wanna kill Sofia now.
"When I go in for the kill, there's no one I'd rather be than who I really am".
Ah so they had a targeting software for the copy of the Jericho missile manufactured by Hammer.
So they were moving Jericho in parts around the world. They should be happy Tony didn't notice. (Because then they would all just go boom and be dead lol).
"Berserk bots a girl's best friends!"
Frampton wants to have space tourism.
Ten Rings again.
Why Frampton wants to strike Korean DMZ?
Aha, global destabilisation for Ten Rings, gotcha.
Oho, so the info about Natasha busting the trafficking ring comes back. It turns out she accidentally trapped the girls inside when she busted the place. She basically says she didn't know they were there but even if she did she wasn't nice back then.
So Natasha says that Sofia was more her than she ever was, meaning the Black Widow, meaning that Natasha always had softness in her which Sofia didn't have and that Sofia got her just reward for wanting to be the perfect Black Widow.
Still sexist move to make a victim of sex trafficking ring become a morally corrupt murderer who would destabilise world for free if she could, but does that for money, because money is nice addition to her new hobby of fucking humanity up.
"Some people are not worth saving" Not so long ago plenty would say that about me".
AVENGERS:
Oho Stark Tower is the first fully clean-energy powered skyscraper.
Pepper thinks inside the box and Tony thinks outside the box.
Oh, so Tony still says that Rhodey had stolen the suit, but then he admits that it could give him heart attack, because it was not calibrated for him, so I wonder if he really wanted Rhodey to have it or never wanted Rhodey to have it at all.
"I got them to agree that all starktech remains proprietary to you as long as War Machine is on loan to the department of defense".
Lol wow, War Machine was an insult? Anyway he means that Rhodey won't be using Mark II because Tony has new suit for him.
"I am not Iron Man" people yell Iron Man at Rhodey "Ah, forget it" xD
How is Tony saying that he couldn't find anything to go after Gulmira when he was literally busting Ten Rings in Iron Man 2 tie-in comic?
Hahaha, Rhodey wanna get a publicist so people would recognise he is War Machine, not Iron Man.
Rhodey is so vicious. "I could have taken your hand with it but not doing it is more fun".
Oho so Tony THREE MONTHS after Tony was putting S on Stark Tower there is Battle of New York and Rhodey is in Hong Kong.
Incoming call: Martini, seriously? You call Tony MARTINI?
Also for some reason this Tony has blue eyes.
Rhodey is so cocky lol. "I haven't seen anything that can take me down".
"When am i gonna learn to keep my mouth shut?" xDDD Rhodey cursed himself.
So after Iron Man 2 Tony realised that he couldn't be iron solder alone anymore and made Rhodey an armor? Still, trust was a huge factor here.
Lol did he just make a joke about being so beat up as after clubbing with Tony to a commanding officer? Rhodey, you vicious little shit lol xD
"Battle tank that's about to make me street pizza! But only if I stand and take it, which I have never done in my life". That's useful info. It gives me some insight into who was protecting who at MIT. Rhodey never was taking a crap of other people, so he probably was used to fighting bullies. And I can imagine him standing up to bullies who targeted a kid - Tony Stark.
Rhodey chooses to fight smarts with smarts.
DID HE JUST MAKE HIS WAY OF LANDING A FRIGGIN MISSILE STYLE? XD
His commander asks if he is crazy. He definitely friggin is lol.
Rhodey just gave his superior a scare when he let a tank run him over. They thought he died.
OMG Ten Rings assumed War Machine is easier target to get tech from and Rhodey feels offended, but happy they know who he is.
Rings had stark tech in that tank, oh no. Tony will be pissed even if those are old black market stuff.
AWWW RHODEY WAS WORRIED ABOUT TONY WHEN HE DIDN'T RESPOND!
"Don't do this to me, man". "Holy...! That was SOME situation" says Rhodey when he saw chitauri flying whale dead. Ok so Avengers met Rhodey in that shawarma place.
Pepper decorates according to feng shui?
So Ten Rings scanned Rhodey's armor with any scanner available and collected a lot of data on the armor anyway.

Kay has big plans.
-
Peggy had expected them to immediately board another plane and head south again, but it seemed that the aircraft in question was held up in Portland by a terrible thunderstorm, forcing them to spend the night in Nome.  There was only one place in town that could really be called a hotel, and it had only four rooms for let, which created something of a problem.
“Well,” said the proprietor, an aging white man with a steel-gray mustache.  “Obviously the best room will be for the guest of honour.”  He held out the key to Steve.
Steve held up his hands.  “Uh, thanks, Mr. Stanley, but I couldn’t, not when we have ladies with us.”  He nodded to Peggy and Kay.
“Oh,” said Peggy.  “Well, no, Captain Rogers really is the guest of honour here, and he’s been unwell.”  Peggy had certainly seen more soft beds in the past couple of years than Steve had, no matter how anyone defined it.
“Peg, I’m fine,” said Steve.
“And I’m not?” Peggy asked.
Kay cleared her throat.  “I believe,” she said, “that the guest of honour here is the hero who’s bringing Captain America home – that would be Mr. Masters.”  Her voice was dripping sarcasm, but she gestured to the man with a smile on her face.
Masters frowned at her suspiciously, but only for a moment.  Then he stepped up to take the key.  “Thank you, Mr. Stanley,” he said.
Peggy and Steve both looked at Kay, who shrugged.  “If we had to stand here all night listening to you two say I couldn’t possibly, we’d never get any sleep,” she said.
With the best room claimed, Mr. Stanley gave a second key to Steve and a third to Peggy and Kay, and then offered the fourth and final one to Howard.  “Sorry to the soldiers,” he added, “but I’m sure you fellows can figure something out.”
“Guess I’ll go sleep in the Skytrain again,” said Jason.  He wasn’t angry or bitter, merely resigned, which Peggy thought was probably worse.
“Don’t be silly, we can share.” Howard clapped him on the shoulder and then approached the counter.  “What’s there to drink in this place?  I’m buying a round for everybody… Steve and Peg have a hell of a story to tell and we’re all gonna need to be fortified for it!”  His glance at Peggy told her that he wanted to hear the tale and wouldn’t let her refuse, government secrets be damned.
Half an hour later found Peggy, Kay, Howard, Jason, and Steve all sitting around a table in the nameless hotel’s tiny common room, refilling glasses from a bottle of something Mr. Stanley had confided he distilled himself.  It was pretty crude and burned the throat, and Peggy didn’t want to drink too much of it.  Jason had nearly choked when he tried it, Steve looked disconcerted, and Howard blinked back tears, but Kay downed it like a shot of whiskey and held out her glass for more.
Peggy took the men through the story of what had happened after she and Kay flew away with the helicopter, and how they’d dragged Steve down to the boiler room to thaw him out.  Although she wouldn’t have done so in front of Masters, Peggy confessed that he, herself, had believed Steve was dead, and it was Kay who’d insisted on keeping him intact.
“How did you know?” Howard asked her.
“I just… knew,” Kay replied with a shrug.
That was enough to tell Peggy not to go into the backstory before Kay herself was ready.  “The rest, I suppose is, is fairly obvious,” she concluded.  “The doctors poked and prodded at Steve to make sure he wasn’t going to drop dead on them, and Masters stopped worrying about arresting us because he was far too busy calling ahead to make sure everybody will give him the credit.”
“Doesn’t that bother you?” asked Jason, who knew what it was like to have other people claim responsibility for his work.
“I could not care less what Vernon Masters says or does, as long as he leaves me alone,” Peggy replied firmly, though it was an utter lie.  Whatever the man had against her, she knew he wasn’t going to drop it just yet.
“What about you?” he asked Kay.
“I’m used to working behind the scenes,” she said.  She poured the last of Mr. Stanley’s moonshine into her glass, then pushed the empty bottle away.  “Anyway, that already happened, and is officially in the past.  I’m worried about the future.”
Peggy leaned forward.  “What about it?” she asked.  Of course Kay had insisted Masters take the best bedroom, she realized… it was on the top floor, far away from anywhere he could hear this conversation from.  “You said you had an extensive to-do list.”
“I do.  I’ve checked two items off – Ste…” Kay caught herself.  “Captain Rogers is back, and Zola is dead.  That’s a good start.  The next items are Sergeant Barnes and the Red Room.  I want to do both at once, because I know how these people operate, and if I do one first, it’s gonna be much harder to come back and take care of the other.”
Almost unconsciously, everybody else huddled in closer, too.  “Bucky is dead,” said Steve.  “You said the Russians found his body.”
“I said they found him,” Kay said.  “You assumed he was dead.”
Steve’s eyes widened, and Peggy had a sudden vision of him sitting in that half-destroyed tavern in France, trying desperately to get drunk off something that was probably no more than soda when compared to Mr. Stanley’s brew.  For him that had been only a couple of weeks ago, and the guilt and grief were still fresh.  To tell him he’d abandoned not a dead friend, but a live one… Peggy reached to put her hand over his.
“I lied when I told you they found in him the valley,” Kay went on.  “HYDRA found him there.  They recognized him as one of Zola’s experimental subjects, and were very interested in the fact that he’d survived the fall with only a few broken ribs and a shattered left shoulder, so they put him in suspended animation so they could keep working on him.  Of course, only a few days later the Valkyrie crashed and Hitler shot himself like the sniveling coward he was, and the Russians moved in to search their bases and take anything useful.  He was nobody to them, just a nameless POW, but his medical records interested them enough that they took him back with them.
“That’s where he is now,” she concluded.  “They’ve been training him up and brainwashing him, trying to create the perfect assassin… something like me, but with less free will and higher necklines.  They had to amputate his left arm, and eventually they hope captured HYDRA scientists, people like Zola, can build him a functional prosthesis.”
There was silence at the table.  Kay smiled sadly at Steve.
“Don’t feel bad, Captain Rogers, you didn’t know.  How could you have known?  It’s only been three years.  They’re not finished yet.  It’ll be much easier to save him now that it would be later, when the only thing he’s known for decades is orders and violence.”  She glanced at Peggy, and Peggy realized she was the only other person at the table who knew that Kay was speaking from terrible personal experience.
Steve swallowed hard.  “How do you know any of this?” he asked.  “I mean… why should I believe you?”
That made Peggy think twice, too… if she assumed Kay’s story of being from the SSR of the future was a lie, then how did she have this information?  Either she was making it all up, or else she knew an awful lot about what was going on with both the USSR and possible HYDRA holdouts that may or may not exist.  Was that awfully convenient, or just awfully suspicious?
Kay seemed to think for a moment.  “Sergeant Barnes has a sister,” she said.  “Rebecca.  She’s the one who named him Bucky, because then their nicknames would match – Becky and Bucky.”  She thought a little longer.  “Before he was drafted he wanted to be a writer.  His favourite book is A Princess of Mars but he’d read almost anything in that genre… not just Burroughs but Wells and Verne and Doyle.  When you were twenty-one, some relative living in London sent you a copy of The Hobbit as a gift, and you read the first chapter and then immediately gave it to Barnes because you knew he’d like it.”
Steve stared at her, not knowing how to respond.
“I know that because you would have told it to me, in a future that won’t happen now,” said Kay, “and I know it won’t happen because you’re alive in 1948 and Zola isn’t.”
“Uh, I’m sorry,” said Jason, “are you trying to tell us you’re from the future?”
“That’s what she told me,” Peggy put in, “but I didn’t want to be the one who sounded like a lunatic by bringing it up.”
“I’m from a future, Dr. Wilkes,” said Kay.  “It’s not the future anymore, and you wouldn’t want it to be, because it’s a future in which you got crushed to death during a demonstration in Baltimore in April of 1968.”
“If you’re a time traveler, how did you get here?” Howard wanted to know.  “We worried that some of the stuff HYDRA was building was for altering time, but I did the math and it just doesn’t work.  You’d need more energy than even the tesseract could give you.”
“I don’t know,” Kay told him.  “I just woke up naked in an alley in San Francisco, and once I figured out I wasn’t dreaming I sat down and made a list of things that have to change.  I need you guys to trust me, because I need your help changing them.”
A moment passed in which nobody spoke, and Peggy realized that everybody was looking at her, as if she were somehow the arbiter of truth and lies in this ridiculous situation.  “I don’t know,” she said.  “I don’t know what to believe.  It sounds absurd… but she did know about Steve.  I can’t deny that.”  How could she, when Steve was sitting right there at the table, in the flesh, as she’d never thought she would see him again.
That seemed to be enough for Steve himself.  “Where is he?” he asked Kay.
“That’s the first problem,” she said.  “I don’t know.  Organizations like the Red Room don’t exactly keep meticulous records, and the details of their history weren’t part of the raise-a-spy curriculum.  When they leave a place, they take everything they need and burn the rest.”
“Which is why you need Dottie!” Peggy realized.
“Exactly.”  Kay nodded.  “She at least knows where she was brought up and who did it, and that’s a start.”
“We haven’t had a whole lot of luck questioning her,” warned Peggy.
“We just have to figure out what she wants,” Kay said.  “I’ve picked out a couple of her patterns… she’s collecting money, but also blackmail material on powerful people.  I don’t know what she’s planning because in my future she obviously didn’t succeed.  But I have a theory, and if I’m right, we’ll have leverage.”
“We’ll have to catch her first,” Peggy said, but for the first time in weeks, she felt as if there were some hope of that.
“What’s my future?” Howard wanted to know.
Kay cocked her head and bit her lip.  “You and your wife die in a car accident just before Christmas in 1991.”
He was startled.  “I’m going to get married?”
Kay rolled her eyes.  “Peggy – you outlive two husbands and die in your bed at nearly a hundred years old, after saving the world over and over but never realizing the enemy you were fighting was within your own organization.  Captain Rogers, they didn’t thaw you out until 2012, and then you had to realize that all this time…”
Steve winced and lowered his head.  “All this time those people had Bucky.”
“Exactly,” Kay nodded, “but like I said, none of that’s going to happen now.  The future is going to be better.  I don’t know how I got here but I know I can do that, or at least try… some things I cannot change, but ‘til I try I’ll never know,” she added in a singsong.
There was another silence around the table.  Steve cleared his throat.
“If what you said about Bucky is true, then I can’t just do nothing,” he said.
Peggy took his hand again.  “We obviously have to try,” she agreed.
“You found Steve,” Howard said.  “I owe you one for that.”
Jason hesitated, then appeared to make up his mind.  “I’m in.”
Kay smiled.  “I won’t thank you yet,” she told them, “but I’ll know when.”
Howard grinned and raised his glass.  “To the future!” he said.
“The future!”  They clinked their glasses together and downed the last of Mr. Stanley’s bootleg, and Peggy felt a little thrill of excitement in the pit of her stomach.  Her work had long ago lost any of that, becoming just what she did with all its secrecy and all its dangers.  But for some reason… this must be what Mr. Jarvis felt, when he described it as adventure.

How about "my family was never the touchy-feely type" and "I just want to be held for a while." Seems fitting for Tony to say considering his history but go with whatever you like best. 😊
I Just Have To Remember
Pairing: Peter Parker/Tony Stark Rating: General (G) Word Count: ~2k Notes: You always pick the ones that leave a lot of wiggle room. I hope you were looking for tooth rotting fluff, because that’s what I settled on. Thanks for the prompt, friend <3 Warnings: There is a lot of fluff. That’s it.  Summary:
Peter is a constant source of touch and for a while, it throws Tony off. The realization that affection is the fuel throws him off even more.
touch starved starters
It took a while, for Tony to be comfortable with all of the open affection that Peter seemed more than willing to give him. When Spider-Man, the friendly neighborhood do-gooder came to fight with them against Loki and the power of the tesseract, Tony didn’t think he’d be earning another important person in his life.
Peter Parker forced his way into Tony’s heart, however – he wanted to be a part of everything the world of being an Avenger could afford him and as the time past, everything Tony had to offer, too.
It started subtly, Peter’s crusade to open Tony up a bit. Tony was quick to understand Peter’s affinity for learning and put him on tasks that needed a little extra care in how they were researched. It was half the fun, watching Peter light up when he found the answer, or get one step closer to being right where they needed him to be. Their time together went from every now and again to most hours of the day – Peter was diligent and could get lost just as easily as Tony could.
Having Peter in the lab came with the added perk of warm coffee every couple of hours. Tony didn’t notice it at first, how often Peter refreshed their cups. It hit him one afternoon when his head was pounding – his fingers a little more hyperactive than he was comfortable with. Picking his head up from the work for the first time in hours, Tony noticed the four empty cups of coffee spread out around the table. “I’m surprised I didn’t have a heart attack,” Tony mumbled, his fingers fusing with the pencil in his hand in an attempt to stop the shake of them.
After that, Tony started to take notice of Peter and the gentle way he plied him with coffee. It happened every couple of hours, Peter left for a few minutes and came back with two cups. He placed his own down by his mess on one side of the table, then came around and placed Tony’s in front of him. The most curious thing about it was the hand that Peter placed on his shoulder. The touch was light – he was obviously trying to keep it on the downlow. Grinning, Tony made sure to say thank you every time Peter did it from that point on.
The squeeze he felt against his shoulder each instance it happened was well worth it.
Every day, Tony lost the needless fight against the chemistry that surrounded him and Peter. Despite what he told himself, Peter was disgustingly perfect for him in all the important ways. Though they were both workaholics, Tony noticed that Peter went out of his way to take care of him – the coffee had only been the start. Where Peter lacked in experience, Tony made up for it in practical knowledge and the ability to provide an easy explanation. It seemed easier to press back against the bond that was inevitably forming; Tony never experienced anything like what he was slowly creating with Peter.
It scared the absolute shit out of him.
As if he could sense that, Peter kept his toe right on the line – Tony wanted to see him as some young kid, but he couldn’t; not when he kept such a tight rein on himself and the situations he navigated so flawlessly. The hand on his arm slowly turned into an arm around his shoulders and Peter’s breath against his ear as they continued to speak about whatever was on the lab table before them.
Tony held his breath every time it happened, his body afraid to move too fast – the thought of losing the new and devastatingly interesting sensation enough to make him seize up. Peter took to rubbing his fingers against Tony’s shoulder until he relaxed.
Tony could tell that Peter was waiting for him to make the final move – the patience the younger man exhibited was astounding. A huge part of him wanted to say fuck it all and pull him close, Peter made him feel all kinds of safe and sound. Yet, there was still a piece of him that wasn’t completely comfortable with the idea of letting go – being vulnerable never got him anything other than sore feelings and sharp pains of disappointment.
He wondered if maybe talking to Peter about it might help ease some of the anxiety – Tony felt a bit pathetic, trying to formulate the best way to tell the man he was slowly falling for that he didn’t know what affection was and couldn’t decipher the way it made him feel. Shaking his head at the consuming thought, Tony buckled down and forced himself to push Peter from his mind; the execution of that much harder than it should have been.
Later in the lab, Tony waited until Peter brought him his first coffee of the evening and pulled him close, his own arm wrapping around the slim waist and dragging a soft sigh from pink lips. “That’s nice,” Peter mumbled, the hand on Tony’s shoulder gripping him a little tighter. “I know touch is weird for you, but – I like it, the way you feel against me.” Peter didn’t relent, the clench of his hand intensifying as he spoke.
Leaning further into Peter’s side, Tony let himself suck in a deep breath, the smell of Peter’s Lucky Brand cologne and Old Spice body wash making him feel calm. He let silence settle over them before even thinking to speak. “It’s not weird, per say. I’m just not used to it. My family was never the touchy-feely type. Affection is foreign.” He turned his head, his breath hitching a little when he noticed how close they really were.
“I like it from you. You make me feel safe. I’m just – still not used to it. It’s hard to think that you’re just doing it because you want to. I know you are, though – you just want to touch me because you can. Tony let his other arm wrap around Peter, his body turning so they were chest to chest. “I’ll take this, too – if you’re offering,” Tony leaned forward, his nose sliding against Peter’s in a silent question.
There wasn’t any hesitation from Peter, he tilted his head and pressed the softest kiss to Tony’s lips. His arms were solid around his shoulders, the tips of Peter’s fingers digging ever so slightly into the long strands of hair on the back of his neck. Tony lost all semblance of shyness the second Peter’s tongue traced along the seam of his lips, the taste of him dizzying, more than enough to help him forget about the worries bogging him down.
Tony clung to Peter when they eventually pulled away, his eyes closed under the heaviness that was reciprocated feelings. The stability of the man holding him up kept the ever present need to spook and run at bay. Peter was nothing like Howard – the genuine nature in which Peter gave was the total opposite of the only other person Tony sought the approval of.
Sighing, Tony searched for Peter’s lips a second time, the kiss soft and chaste – the slightest bit of reassurance to keep anxieties at bay. “How do you feel about ditching the lab tonight? My heads not really in it,” Tony posed the question and stepped out of Peter’s arms, the distraction of them too much in that moment.
“I could use a break. Any chance I can convince you to order Chinese and watch Sugar Rush on Netflix?” Peter’s bottom lip poked out a little, the look making Tony laugh, his breath catching after a few minutes of blissed out joy. He pulled Peter into a hug before he could lose his nerve, his lips pressing against the side of Peter’s head.
“Sounds perfect, Pete.”
----
Later, after too much processed chicken and rice, Tony found himself laid out against Peter’s chest – now that he’d given in to it, his body wanted to soak up all it could. Peter didn’t disappoint, either – his fingers danced over the side of Tony’s arm and his leg pressed up against his thigh as tightly as he could. If he weren’t so over the moon about what it all meant, Tony would probably be rabid with want. Instead, he felt content to be surrounded by all things Peter.
He felt himself start to drift after the fifth time he watched Adriano Zumbo try a cupcake. Tony pressed his forehead against Peter’s chest before forcing himself to pull away. “Come on. The big bed I have in my room will be much better for sleeping.” Tony didn’t give the sleep groggy Peter any choice, he grabbed his hands and hefted him from the couch, the two of them leaning on each other as they stumbled down the hall.
Tony got Peter set up with a toothbrush and went about getting his face washed and moisturized (because he needed to continue to look young, after all.) Catching Peter’s eye in the mirror, Tony grinned – the domesticity of the little scene making his heart beat double time. He dragged his eyes away and left the bathroom – Tony could only handle so much.
Stripping down to his boxer briefs, Tony slipped under the covers and turned his back to the bathroom door. The coolness of the sheets had him sinking into the comfort of the ridiculously expensive mattress, his brain starting to shut down after 36-hours of constant thinking and stress. It felt nice to finally not have to worry about how he’d handle Peter – how he’d force himself to let the obvious tenderness roll right off his back.
The mattress shifted a few minutes later, cool air slipping under the blankets as Peter climbed in behind him. He was in a similar state of underdress, his bare chest delightfully warm against Tony’s back. A heavy arm wrapped around his middle and tugged, Tony moving back willingly. “Is this okay?” Peter whispered, his lips pressing against the shell of Tony’s ear.
It took Tony a second to remember how to speak, his body just a few minutes away from succumbing to a well-earned slumber. Reaching back, Tony gripped Peter’s arm and pulled him closer. “Yeah. I just want to be held for a while. Glad you’re here to do that for me, Pete.” Tony’s semi-cognizant mutterings revealing more than he probably would have any other time.
Peter tightened his arms around Tony and settled further into the mattress, his limbs becoming heavier by the second. Soft lips pressed against the downey hairs on the back of Tony’s neck, both men sharing a shiver.
“I’m glad, too. Get some rest, baby,” Peter gave him another soft kiss on the neck, Tony’s little moan of happiness settling deep in his chest.
Just before drifting off Tony heard Peter mumble “Love you,” his hand subconsciously tightening around him.
Smiling, Tony groggily said it back – his eyes shutting for the night.

Through The Years- Part 9
tags: @the-romanian-is-bae @a-girl-who-loves-disney
Summary: knowing that you must act now, you make your way to Germany, to S.H.I.E.L.D’s aid.
~~~~~~
MAY 3RD 2012
PARIS, FRANCE
9:00 PM.
You were scared. Scratch that, that’s an understatement. You were petrified.
Dismissing the missed calls notifications from Hill and Coulson, and make your way to a glass the hallway closet. Pushing on the button disguised as a light switch next to it, the door hiss and slide open. The silver suit of armor gleams in the fluorescent light. Over the past 60 something years, it hadn’t changed in the least.
“Hello old friend. Are you ready?” you asked, giving a lighthearted chuckle. As if the suit would answer. Taking it off it’s rack, you put it on. The familiar plates and buckles felt secure around you, and it almost felt like you were on a mission with the Howlies again.
Picking up the ear piece from the hook on the wall, you put it on your ear, making sure it was secure. You spoke into it “JARVIS?”
“Yes, ms. Stark?”
Opening the door to the building hallway, you looked both ways before speeding up the stairs that led to the roof level. “JARVIS, set course for Stuttgart.” specifying the location you saw on the news, too.
“Yes ms. Stark, right away.” The rocket-boots tony had installed on your armor the last time he visited you took off into the Paris night sky, and headed for Germany.
~~~~~~
STUTTGART, GERMANY
10:00 PM.
Landing on the roof of the museum, you tried to keep as quiet as you could, crouching down. From your line of view, you could see Steve, a group of hostages and a tall, reindeer? looking man.
You slid down a ladder off the side of the building quieter than a mouse, partly because you didn’t want to be shot at and partly because you didn’t want to startle the hostages.
“Kneel!” the man booms.
“No. Not today, not ever.” Steve stood his guard, hiding behind his shield. Interrupting the cold, tense night is “Shoot to Thrill” by- what was the band? You remember because Tony made you listen to them for hours upon hours. Oh, that was right. AC/DC.
Tony. Oh my god. It was going to be a shit show. He prepares a blast from his suit’s hand “Your move, reindeer games. Surrender or be terminated.”
Deciding it was time to crawl out form behind the wall, you pulled out not one, but both swords from your side. “Yea me too, Rudolph. You’ve got ten seconds. before I arrest you.” pointing one of the blades to his face while the other was behind your back, ready for any attack.
“Aunty! What’re you doing here?” Tony asked in surprise.
“Tony! Hi! Fury wouldn’t give me a break. So I thought to myself- why not join the party?” you said, inching closer to- Loki.
“You always did, Y/N. Welcome back.” Steve says in relief, with a sort of golden boy smile.
“Shut it, freedom.” Tony almost bursts into laughter. “Now, ‘god of mischief-’”
“The name is Loki and I am your kin-”
“I don’t like you very much. You know, last time I was in Germany, I was fighting a guy just like you.” you had now hooked one arm around his neck, the sword inching closer to his face. “I didn’t like him very much. I don’t like you either. You have 5 seconds.”
“How dare yo-”
It was so easy to distract him. You kick him in the back and handcuff his hands. “By order of the U.S military, you are under arrest. You’re coming with us.”
~~~~~~
THE QUINJET
All was quiet as the quinjet zoomed off from the ground, headed to New York. You and tony were talking on the side while Steve was tying Loki to his seat.
“It’s good to see you, Aunty. Hope you didn’t miss me that much.” Tony said, pulling away from the hug you were both in a second ago.
“Me? miss you? never.” you teased, smirking.
“Hey! you love me and you know it.”
“I guess you’re right.”
Steve finishes the job and walks over to you and greets you with a hug. “Hey, Y/N. It’s good to have you back.”
“It sure feels good to be back. Although I’m not so sure.”
“Understandable. I don’t like this, guys.” he says all in one breath.
“What?” Tony asked, suit whirring. “Rock of Ages giving up so easily?”
“Well Tony, I don’t remember the fight ever being that easy.”
“Say, you’re pretty spry for an older fellow. Do you do Pilates?”
“I’m sorry- What?”
“You might have missed it, spending so much time as a capsicle.” They are now face to face, the tension high.
It was way past time to intervene. “Ok, you two. You might’ve found your ego’s match, but we have way bigger matters at hand.” you said, separating them from one another.
 Finally ripping his eyes of Tony, Steve turns to you and asks. “Y/N! So! Fury didn’t tell me he was calling you in.”
“I had no choice. He sort of broke into my apartment-”
“There’s a lot of things Fury doesn’t tell you, Rogers-” Tony began.
“Tony! That’s enoug-”
Thunder is heard, and the blinding white lightning in seen from the Quinjet’s windows. Thunder and Lightning nearly hit the jet, causing it to violently shake.
“Now- where’s all this coming from?” the red haired woman, who you learned her name was Natasha, asked.
The jet shakes again, more violently this time. And you’re afraid it might actually be struck down. Loki looks out the window, as if expecting something.
“You afraid of a little lightning, your highness?” Steve asks in a teasing tone, raising an eyebrow.
Loki looks back at Steve, with a devilish smirk “I’m not overly fond of what follows.”
The jet once again shakes and a blinding light shines through the window. You firmly stand your ground, while helping Tony up, who had fallen down a moment ago. But it’s not a light. It’s a man. A tall, well built man with long hair opens the hatch and grabs Loki by the neck and flies out.
Natasha, Tony, Steve and you stand there in shock, before you approach the hatch where they had both left a second ago.
“And now there’s this guy.” Tony breathed out, absolutely exasperated, putting on his helmet.
“You think he’s friendly?” Natasha asked, eyes darting between the three of you.
It suddenly felt as if you were on The Valkyrie just yesterday. A Tesseract was out there and Loki was using it for his own benefit. The situation seemed more similar than it should.
Coming back to reality, you answered Natasha’s question. “It doesn’t matter. If this guy free or kills Loki, it won’t matter; the Tesseract will be lost.” Steve’s eyes dart to you. He knows what you’re thinking about, and gives a silent nod of acknowledgement to the situation.
You get ready to jump as Tony comes up beside you. “You Starks have and will always be reckless. We need a plan, you two.” Steve said.
“I do have a plan, Iced Americano. Attack.” Tony said, looking at you, then proceeding to jump out, you following close behind.
“How do they even know each other? Why haven’t I met her until now, Steve?” Natasha asked, crossing her arms.
“She- She’s Howard’s sister. She went into the ice with me, couple decades back. She’s his aunt.”
“Alright. Be careful, these men come form legend, they’re practically gods.”
“There’s only one god, ma’am. And I’m pretty sure he doesn’t dress like that.” with this, Steve jumps out of the jet.
~~~~~~
Thor, Tony and you have been falling through the air, somewhere in Europe at least for the past 30 seconds or 30 minutes; you wouldn’t exactly know. You weren’t counting.
The three of you make it to the ground with a loud  thud. The rustling of trees and leaves ad the crunching of sticks fills the otherwise silent forest. Before you can comprehend what’s going on, this man- Thor had you in a headlock.
“Don’t touch me again, puny human!” Thor boomed, wrapping his arm tighter around your neck.
“Oop yea, that’s gonna leave a mark.” you said as best as you could, obviously tripping over you words and stuttering, given your current situation.
“Shut it, point break. I won’t touch you ever again, but let my aunt go.”
Thor releases his arm from around you, and you fell to the floor with a gasp of breath. Tony helps you up and lets you lean on him until you gain back most of your strength.
“You lot have no idea what you’re dealing with.”
“Really, Shakespeare in the park? Tell me, doth mother know you weareth her drapes?” Tony teased Thor, while helping you stand upright.
“Loki WILL face Asgardian justice.” Thor said, trying to convince the both of you.
“Listen, Thor-” you approach him “If he gives up the Tesseract, he’s all yours.”
“Yea, she’s definitely the smarter one of this pair.” Tony breathed out, putting the helmet back on. “Until then, stay out of our way, Rapunzel.”
This makes Thor angry. He lifts his hand up in the air to catch the his hammer. He then proceeds to throw it at the both of you, knocking Tony and you to the side, harshly.”
I’m saved. Is the only thought in your head as the quinjet makes it’s landing in the forest, and Steve lands in front of it. “Hey, That’s enough!” Steve looks Thor up and down. “Now, calm down. I don’t know what you plan on doing here.”
“I’m here to put and end to Loki’s schemes!”
“Then prove it, if your so tough. Put. The. Hammer. Down.”
“Yeah, capsicle. That might not be the best idea. Dude loves that thing.” Tony said, helping you up from the ground.
“You want me to let go of this hammer?” Thor said, lowering his voice. He then proceeds to bring it high into the air to strike it against Steve’s shield, making a blinding light shine throughout the dark forest.
You and Tony stand there in shock, as the force of the hammer on the shield knocked Steve to the ground. Thor never takes his eyes off the three of you.
“Are we done here?”
~~~~~~
THE BRIEFING ROOM ON THE HELLICARRIER
“Be careful how you speak. Loki is beyond reason, but he is of Asgard. And he’s my brother.”
“Thor- I don’t know if you’re aware, but he killed 80 people in two days.” Natasha informed, raising an eyebrow and crossing her arms.
“He’s adopted.”
“Um- A-Anyway, I’m doctor Bruce Banner it’s good to meet y-you guys.” The poor man was clearly nervous and shaking, if you squinted your eyes enough.
“It’s good to meet you doctor, I’m Y/N.” you shook his hand, although he seemed hesistant.
“Yes, yes, oh my god. How could I forget? I absolutely love your work I’m a big admirer.”
“Thank you, doctor-”
“Hey, Banner. Hands of the Aunt.”
“Tony, leave him alone.”
“Well, I-”
The doors hiss open, to reveal Nick Fury, with Maria Hill behind him. “Doctor Banner is only here to help u track down the cube. I was hoping Pain In the Ass #1 and Pain In the Ass #2 would like to help him.”
“Loving the nicknames, director.” Tony said, in a sassy manner.
“Gee thanks, Fury. I know you missed me.” you said, in the same way Tony did.
“This is why you two have those. Good god.”
“Moving on to the actual issue- Let’s start with that stick of his- Loki’s. But it works an awful lot like a HYDRA weapon.”
“Captain, I don’t know about that. But it is powered by the cube. And I wanna know what is it that it does that turns two of the sharpest men I know into his personal flying monkeys.” Fury said.
“Monkeys?” Thor asked. “I’m afraid I do not understand.”
“I do! I understood that reference!” Steve says excitedly, while Tony rolls his eyes from besides you.
“Steve, shut up! You’re making us look bad!” You whispered-yelled.
“Meeting adjourned, ladies and gentlemen.” Fury states.
Tony then turns to Dr. Banner and you, about to strike up conversation “Well, you two. The professor-”
You crossed your arms, raising an eyebrow at him.
“-and the doctor. Shall we play?”
