Omg of course you can do something with the idea if you want! I don't mind at all and the fact you liked the idea so much makes me so happy💕
And I'm also fine with being called girl in like a gender neutral way yk like the same way people say guys to refer to everyone sometimes, so no worries with that either!

A Failure of Words- Haldir x GN!Reader

Tumblr media
“What are you going to do, then, shoot it down?”
And you had laughed at that. Was it really so funny? Complaining about a cloud and his brother suggests firing an arrow at it? Haldir scoffed. Surely your giggling was only to respond politely to their inane humor.
You had been excelling in your target practice of late, your skills with a bow increasing thanks to Haldir as much as his brothers, while Rúmil and Orophin were more to thank for your progress in Elvish. Necessity, of course, as he was the only one with any skills in Common, something you had initially bonded over. Yet somehow your simple bond with his brothers seemed...different. Had Haldir himself ever made you laugh so? Had he ever tried?
"Come, now," Orophin addressed you by name, "hit three more targets and we'll show you that old painting of our beloved Haldir!"
Grinning, you took up your weapon again, stretching some exertion from your muscles before you followed the others' motions toward the next dangling piece of chipped wood. Rolling his eyes, Haldir followed.
~
Rúmil struggled several times to pick up the roll he'd dropped, and upon final success at lifting it he thrashed about as if the thing was fighting back. Again you laughed, a hand falling to the table you sat at.
"My father used to do that too- it's as if you knew! I had no idea you two were so funny. I suppose Haldir is the serious one," you teased, gaze shifting to the eldest brother.
All this time he'd thought of them as the ridiculous ones more than himself an outlier. They had not been promoted, neither had bothered to learn the common tongue, both preferred an aimless life in the trees to the ambitions of the world, protection of what they held dear. Not that they couldn't fight, but... Was Haldir himself the outcast? Heart sinking, he gazed around the table, taking in how easily conversation flowed between you and his brothers. Like the breeze. Haldir was the one who had accepted you when you first came to Lothlórien as a refugee, fought for an outsider to stay despite his usual prejudices. The torture you'd had to endure at the hands of your captors made him sick to even imagine, and fortuitously Galadriel had agreed.
He was the only one who truly knew your secrets, and so he had desired to be the first to truly make you smile again; now, it seemed, his brothers had robbed him of that, forced him back into his station as "the serious one". Worst of all, perhaps not the one who would hold your heart.
Instant it was not, but the elf had found himself falling for you more and more during his time as your guide. Watching your wonder as you were led higher and higher into the sun-soaked trees, chuckling at your confusion when you pronounced and repeated new Elvish words. Seeing you bloom like a sunflower finding its roots once more. Always had he struggled with displays of affection, and perhaps that had cost him more than time. Or else this was another challenge for the captain, a new type of battle to undertake: correcting the many times his words failed him in the face of your fair spirit.
"You might be surprised," he finally spoke, interrupting his own whirlwind of thoughts again to meet your eyes, "you are aware, after all, of how much I taught them."
Rúmil and Orophin's heads both tilted, gazing at their eldest brother with new interest. Newly widening smiles. Knowing ones. An unfortunate side effect he would deal with later. For the time being, there were more pressing matters to deal with.
"Of course I am," you replied, taking a sip from your goblet of water, "Tracking, archery... And surely they would not know so much of your history were it not for you."
"And about the beasts of the land, of course." A breeze blew through his hair as he inhaled, next line at the ready. "After all, my name is Hal-deer."
Groaning, Orophin and Rúmil both simultaneously dropped their heads into their hands, shaking them with great disapproval. Lacking fluency though they may have been, they knew enough to recognize such a play on words, and it was clear they did not like it. Too bad- it wasn't for them.
You? Bursting into laughter, you clapped your hands lightly, head thrown back in amusement that had Haldir grinning widely for the first time in likely far too long.
Still shaking their heads, both younger brothers excused themselves, Orophin practically shoving Rúmil away from the table as they scrambled off to refill their drinkware.
"Never have I heard you make a joke, Haldir! Why now? And why one so-" Words failed you, too, inquiry wholly aborted by a fresh bout of laughter. Well did it convey the rest of your question, however.
Suppressing a wince, Haldir willed his smile to return. Wait, perhaps it looked forced. Was he overthinking this? His brothers would probably say yes.
His brothers. "My brothers...they make you happy in a way I seemingly never can. Perhaps I envied them." His voice emerged as little more than a whisper, eyelids fluttering half-shut as if they could conceal him from your vision.
Your brows furrowed at this. Head giving a faint tilt of confusion, you leaned forward, forced his grey eyes to meet your gaze. "I...I confess I do see your brothers differently," you told him, your own voice shy, "I always wished to think of them like my own brothers."
Heart lightening, Haldir replied, perhaps a bit too readily, "You can."
"No," you shook your head, paused, "well..."
It was your turn to drop your gaze, your posture straightening as you gave a supplying incline of the head, clearly hoping Haldir followed.
He did. Did he? Jaw dropping slightly, he reached out a tentative hand, saw that you did not flinch. Lifting up your gaze gently by your chin, Haldir spoke again.
"That you may wish as well, for though my words have failed me again and again it is the very same in my heart. It vexed me not being the one to make you smile, to win you over, when your name had been so inscribed upon my heart. But if you'll have the serious one, he shall have you."
Your answer came in the form of a kiss that had his heart soaring, one a bit too quick for Haldir's liking, but he quite literally had all the time in the world if he wished. He could wait. For once, his words had not failed him.
"Again and again, my Hal-dear," you replied with a devilish grin.
The golden-haired elf let his own face fall into his hand at that one. "I'll not be forgetting that one anytime soon, will I?"
As fate would have it, Rúmil and Orophin designated that moment to return, whooping as they set their goblets back down, clearly having spied upon him through some curtain or another as they often had in their youth.
"Not in the slightest," they answered for you, voices perfectly synchronized.

I would like to uno reverse and ask how the elves (yep, all the LOTR/hobbit elves you write for) would react to their s/o keeping them warm, whether it be with a blanket, an extra cloak, or even magically radiating warmth.
LOTR/THE HOBBIT ELVES REACTING TO THEIR S/O WHO GIVE THEM THEIR COAT/BLANKET WHEN ITS COLD.
Elrond
Istg this poor guy will survive the cold for you
You don’t realize it’s cold but when you look over at Elrond he’s quite literally shivering from cold
You quickly deduce that the poor ellon has stayed out simply because you were
You chuckle fondly, finding it sweet as you drape a coat/blanket over him and he blinks at you in surprise
He tries to protest but you glare at him and he shuts up
Thranduil
No, just no.
This man will refuse to take your coat
Anyway, he wouldn't even be out in the cold
If he finds it cold, there is no way he’s letting you go out
Legolas
Dude does not get cold
Have you seen him running through those snowy places?
Yeah, he's too jumpy to be cold
He will politely reject your coat if you ask though
Lindir
This poor sweet innocent baby 😭
He won’t wait for you to offer it, he’s gonna just grab it then apologize as he wraps himself in it
Literally freezing
He’ll be okay, he snuggles against you for extra warmth
Haldir
Dude patrols borders, he’s used to it
May actually fall asleep standing up in the cold
You just wrap the blanket around him and he’ll stir slightly
Poor bby, he’s so tired
He’ll hold you tight, swaddling you in the blanket too
Glorfindel
He will snatch your blanket quicker than you can say his name
He’ll apologize but he aint sorry at all
He is COLD.
Let him have the damn blanket xD
Feren
Sweet bby
He won’t say anything even if the air is a bit chilly
He’ll do his best to hide it but you soon realize just how cold he is
“Thank you, meleth.” He’ll smile at you as you drape the blanket over his shoulders but insists you both share it
Figwit
“My lady/lord, it’s cold” He’ll comment on the chilliness of the air as you stroll through the garden
No matter how many times you tell him to call you your name he will insist on using your title in public
When you give him your coat he looks surprised and tries to protest but soon gives in, wrapping it around himself
“Thank you, meleth…” He’ll whisper, his ears red
{Thanks for the request and hope it lives up to your expectations! Apologies for the wait. And as always, my inbox is open!}

Hi, can you write a one shot for Haldir? He's saving reader for orck attack! I love your blog
Hello!! I'm so glad you enjoy my blog and I hope you enjoy this!
The fast thudding in your eardrums- you couldn’t decipher whether it was the sound of your feet slamming against the forest floor or if it was your heartbeat in your ears.
Mentally cursing when you stumbled over a vine, you glimpsed behind you. They were gaining on you. Three orcs with thick blades and wicked grins, chasing you through the woodland. You were out collecting berries, wanting to make you and Haldir a treat for whenever he got home, only to be ambushed.
“Calm down, (Y/n),” You could practically hear your beloved’s voice in your head and so you forced yourself to take deep breaths through your nose before bolting to the side, throwing them temporarily off your trail.
You knew these lands like the back of your hand, it was time you used this information to your advantage.
‘The training grounds aren’t too far from here,’ You noted mentally, bolting with all you had towards the area.
Soon the gates were in sight as the trees and rocks faded into a blur around you.
“Haldir!!” You screeched out, knowing the orcs were getting closer and closer-
You yelled out as an arrow impacted your shoulder, sending you flying to the ground. Gasping from pain, you told yourself to get up and keep running, but your body wouldn’t agree.
“Haldir,” You choked out, tears blurring your vision.
Orc laughter filled your ears and for a moment, you thought all hope was lost.
Until you heard a familiar call to attack signal from Haldir.
Relief filled your lungs as you rested your head back to stare at the sky.
The sounds of blades swishing as your partner flew past you to face the trio were like a peaceful melody because you knew, at this moment, you were safe from all who wished you harm. Haldir was here.

Three Weeks on the Nimrodel
Well, here it is. My first (and oldest) piece of fic. I'm going against my brand here by posting something set in Lorien when Rohan is really my jam. But this is the first thing I ever wrote, so it seems fitting that it should be the first posted, too.
Tumblr media
Pairing: Haldir x reader (The reader is gender neutral beyond 2 uses of the descriptor "beautiful", which is still neutral to me but your mileage might vary.)
Genre: Romance, I guess
Summary: Two elves who are frequently misunderstood by others find the joy of having someone really see and value them for who they are.
Inspiration: This all came from the well loved gif above, in which Craig Parker does beautiful work communicating a whole emotional arc (surprise, confusion, acceptance, appreciation) when Aragorn unexpectedly shows Haldir some loving affection. In that half-second of screen time, I see an entire book of backstory about Haldir's character--about being someone who is very reserved by nature, who isn't necessarily comfortable freely expressing feelings and innermost thoughts, but who still feels deep emotional connections to others that can come out under the right circumstances. As a very reserved person myself, I can relate--if you tend to keep your thoughts and feelings close to the vest, people will make a lot of assumptions and judgments about you that probably aren't right, and that can be exhausting. When someone finally does understand you and allows you to be comfortable enough to open up on your own terms, it's a life changing experience. So that's what I tried to write.
Word count: approx 3200 (~ 6 pages)
**********
It is still early when you arrive in the center of Caras Galadhon, joining the crowd of elves waiting to find out where they will be posted for the next few weeks of guard duty. Most in the group are veteran marchwardens, deeply familiar with each other and the daily routine of life near the borders. By contrast, you are a city warden, often dedicated to the direct protection of the Lady of the Wood. But you have been asked to serve a temporary rotation on the borders while several of the regular marchwardens are away with Lord Celeborn on a visit to Mirkwood.
The change of pace is not unwelcome to you. While you love Caras Galadhon and are honored to spend time in the service of Lady Galadriel, you frequently find yourself craving distance from the city in favor of the quiet outlying areas, where it is easy to hear clear birdsong, the rustling steps of small animals scampering by, and the patter of light raindrops falling on mallorn leaves.
The crowd begins to murmur as the deputy captain appears and begins handing around sheets of paper with duty assignments. As the pages spread through the crowd, the murmurs turn to both sighs of disappointment and quiet expressions of satisfaction.
“All I want is to avoid the Nimrodel,” you overhear the elf next to you mutter to a friend of his. You recognize him as Calendil, who, like many of his companions, is well known for carousing around Caras Galadhon any time he is home on leave. As a group, the marchwardens are a boisterous company who seem always determined to pack several weeks of fun into the few days of free time they’ve been given. “Three weeks posted with the captain is more than can be asked of me.”
Your eyebrows shoot up in surprise at this mention of Captain Haldir. You know him a little–everyone in Lorien knows the leader of the marchwardens–and have never before heard a negative word uttered about him. Your path does not often cross with his, but you admire his impressive record of achievements and have never seen him treat another elf with anything but courteous respect.
“You speak truly,” replies Calendil’s companion. “I cannot spend so much time with someone who has so little to say. That much silence is enough to drive one a little mad.”
A wave of indignation rolls through your body. It is undeniably true that Haldir is very reserved. He says little that isn’t necessary to the conduct of his duties, and what he is truly thinking behind his large blue eyes is often a mystery. But that has never seemed a negative trait to you. Indeed, you appreciate that he does not talk simply for talk’s sake and that he does not seem concerned with always making his own opinions known. What’s more, you recognize a fair amount of his inherent reserve in your own nature. If you didn’t often force yourself to satisfy others’ expectations by taking on a more outgoing, sociable persona, perhaps your own wardens would describe you just as these elves have described their captain.
Calendil’s conversation comes to an abrupt end as a copy of the assignment sheet makes its way into his hands. Peering over his shoulder, you quickly find your own name allocated to a remote post near the edge of the Dimrill Dale. A glance further down the list confirms what you already know from the quiet groan that has just escaped from Calendil’s lips: he has been assigned to the Nimrodel post.
An idea quickly forms in your head, and you tap him on the shoulder. Why should he spend three weeks feeling miserable with his posting–and, no doubt, making anyone around him miserable as a result–when you have no particular attachment to your own assignment? Calendil can go to the Dimrill Dale, and you will spend your posting with Haldir instead.
“If such a trade is permitted within your ranks, I will gladly make the exchange,” you offer. “I have always loved the river. And I have no objection to the company of someone who takes his duty seriously and does not revel in idle chatter.”
Calendil’s face registers a moment of regret as he realizes that his prior conversation has been heard by others, but it is quickly replaced by a wide, beaming smile that reflects his rapid change of fortune. “It is permitted,” he says, “and I happily accept. Remind me the next time we are both on leave, and I will reward your generosity with some of my own!”
You doubt that whatever reward he has in mind will suit your inclinations, but there is no need to worry about that now. Calendil has already sprinted off toward the deputy captain to report the change, and you turn toward home to gather your supplies.
****
Two days later, you are approaching the Nimrodel post, which is located in a lovely old mallorn tree with twisted roots that hang over the river’s edge. You raise your hand to your lips and whistle the signal. The return call echoes off the trees before a slim rope ladder drops from the branches above you. You run lightly up the rungs, making easy work of the climb to the talan perched near the great tree’s crown, where it commands a wide view of the river and much of the western section of the border.
As you hoist yourself and your pack onto the platform, you look up to see a single figure standing a few feet away. It is Haldir, leaning against the wind screen with his bow slung loosely over his shoulder and his white-blonde hair blowing gently in the breeze. You are surprised to see him there alone; wardens generally keep watch in pairs or groups of three for safety. You are there to relieve Arthalion, who is due now to return home for a break, but there is no sign of Arthalion or his things.
“Mae govannen, Captain,” you say, placing your hand on your chest and bowing your head slightly. “Is everything well?”
Haldir returns the gesture with a small smile. “Yes. It has been blessedly uneventful. Perhaps it is the threat of the weather.”
This makes sense. Just last month, an orc party attempting a surprise attack during a thunderstorm found themselves nearly washed away by sudden flooding from the Celebrant. Since then, even the hint of rain has tended to keep them at bay.
“And Arthalion? Is he out on a task?”
Haldir shakes his head. “I sent him back early. You might have passed one another in the forest except that he planned to meet a small hunting party further north. As I said, things here were quiet, and he was anxious to join his friends.” He gives a small shrug and looks down. “I will do the same for you, if circumstances allow and you desire it. I do not wish to keep anyone from their enjoyments unless duty requires it.”
You permit yourself a brief moment to wonder what Haldir’s own enjoyments might be. You have heard that he is a talented artist, making detailed pencil sketches of the forest, but he does not often show his work to others.
“That is a thoughtful offer,” you say. “But I have no pressing need to return, and I would not have you out here alone, even if there is no other elf in Lorien better able to protect himself.”
He acknowledges this compliment with a modest smile and gestures toward a small shelf where you can store your belongings. His own are few in number but neatly stacked or folded with military precision. You note that he does, in fact, have a small bundle of pencils and a notebook, but, as expected, there is no sign of any actual drawings.
After stowing your things, you settle into a position opposite him on the talan, and a silence ensues. It is of no bother to you–you’re enjoying the smell of the damp air and the touch of the light wind on your face–but you soon notice that Haldir is looking increasingly discomfited as the quiet minutes slip by. His gaze shifts frequently between the horizon, his hands on his bow, and your face.
“Was…your journey here pleasant?” His face is studiously neutral, but his voice sounds strained and he picks at a splinter on his bow. You realize that he is trying to make conversation for your benefit, to fill in the noticeable silence with casual talk that clearly does not come easily to him. You feel a sudden rush of affection for him, this intensely quiet being who is making himself uncomfortable so that you will feel welcome. You wonder how best to put him at ease.
“It was very pleasant,” you reply. “I am so rarely outside of the city these days that any chance to enjoy the forest is a gift. I can understand why being a marchwarden is an attractive job, at least during times of relative peace.”
He looks up, reappraising your face, and nods his agreement.
You hesitate before speaking again, unsure about how directly to address his uneasiness.
“Captain,” you begin, “it sounds like we may have an uneventful tour here. If that is the case, please do not feel that you are obligated to occupy my time. I am quite comfortable with quiet activity and my own thoughts and would gladly afford you space for the same if that is something you wish.”
His cheeks and ears flush slightly but, despite his apparent embarrassment at being accurately perceived, he seems immediately relieved as well. “Thank you,” he says. “If you are as good a warden as you are a reader of people, I feel myself in safe hands indeed.”
The next several days pass by peacefully. Between occasional scouting trips up or down the riverbank and regularly monitoring the view from the talan, you mostly spend the time together in companionable silence. You take turns preparing simple meals, and during breaks in the intermittent rain you make minor repairs to nearby rope bridges and other hidden defenses in the area. In the evenings, you read a book by lantern light while Haldir sits next to his own lantern and sketches in his notebook, occasionally transferring completed drawings into a closed leather folio at his side. Every so often, you both glance up at the same time, and you give him a warm smile when your eyes meet before turning back to your respective pages.
*****
One evening, as you clean up the remains of your small dinner and take out your book again, Haldir lightly clears his throat.
“That book seems to engage you much,” he says. “May I ask what it is?”
Surprised, you hold it out to him, and he takes it, examining the cover and flipping through a few pages.
“I do not recognize this script,” he says, looking at it with curiosity.
“It is a representation of Rohirric,” you tell him. “My brother was a skilled linguist who passed on some small portion of his knowledge to me. He spent many months visiting a friend in the court at Edoras and helped them to start preserving some of their oral traditions with a system of letters. This is a copy of one of his first completed projects–the story of the founding of Rohan–which he sent to me as a gift.”
Haldir looks again with renewed interest at a few pages before handing the book back to you. “Your brother sounds like an impressive scholar,” he says. “Does he remain in Rohan?”
You hesitate slightly before responding. “In a way. Two years ago an orc band in search of horses raided a village near the Limlight while my brother happened to be visiting. They caught him and his hosts unaware. The Rohirrim buried his body in a place of honor with their people, though his spirit has surely gone to Mandos.”
You relate this with downcast eyes, tracing over your brother’s name on the cover of the book with your thumb. After a few moments, you look up again, expecting to see Haldir withdrawn from the conversation. You know that many elves are uncomfortable with death, which is an unnatural state for your kind, and there is nothing in your interactions so far to indicate that Haldir will want to continue such a personal discussion. You are surprised once again, however, to find that he is looking at you intently.
“I am deeply sorry,” he says. “Working as I do, I have known many elves who met a similar fate in battle, and it is never easy. My own brothers are a treasure to me, and I cannot imagine losing them. I hope I have not contributed to your suffering by unwittingly bringing up a painful subject.”
You blink back a few tears and smile. Through your sadness, you are moved by the warmth of his response and honored that he was willing to share something personal of himself. “Of course not,” you say. “Talking about my brother is one way to keep him with me. Thank you, Captain.” You reach forward and squeeze his hand. He flinches slightly at the unexpected touch, but then gently returns the squeeze.
“Please,” he says, “call me Haldir.”
*****
After that night, things are different between the two of you. You both speak more often, tentatively at first but then with increasing comfort. You trade stories about old adventures and talk about the joys and frustrations of your daily lives. You discover that he has much to say when he finally feels more at ease. He is even quite funny, with a dry wit that you did not expect but thoroughly enjoy. You walk together in the forest and rest your feet in the waters of the Nimrodel during the day, and in the evenings he asks you to read to him from your book. You happily relate tales of Cirion and Eorl and the coming of the Northmen to Calenardhon as he draws quietly, occasionally interjecting a question or a brief comment.
The time passes quickly and easily, and soon your rotation will be at an end. You realize there is a growing pain in your heart each time you think about your imminent departure. Your old life suddenly feels dull and uninteresting to you now. You do not want to go back to a time without his companionship. You debate whether to say this to him, but you cannot imagine how he might react to such a confession. Paralyzed by uncertainty, the last days of your assignment tick by.
On your final evening, you are preparing for one last opportunity to enjoy what has become your nightly routine. Just as he is about to settle with his notepad and folio, however, he notices your canteen is empty and insists on climbing down to fill it for you. As he reaches the ground and disappears over the riverbank, the wind changes direction and a sudden gust rips across the talan, flinging back the cover of the folio and sending papers flying out in all directions. You cry out in dismay and throw yourself desperately onto the pages whipping around you, seeking to hold them down long enough to gather them safely together.
It is only after you have retrieved all the loose pages and are preparing to neatly stack them that you first look at the drawings themselves and are stunned by what you see: beautiful illustrations of the stories you’ve been reading to him, the words of your brother’s book brought to vivid life in graceful pencil lines and delicate shading. You leaf through the stack in awed amazement only to nearly drop the whole pile again when you turn a page and find an image of yourself as you must look to him each night, sitting by your lantern with your book in your lap. You keep turning pages and find more of yourself…braiding your hair first thing in the morning, standing at the wind screen and scanning the horizon, unlacing your boots at the end of a day. Your breath catches in your throat as you absorb these images. You have never looked more beautiful than you do here, seen through his eyes.
A sudden noise behind you tears your attention from the papers in your hand, and you turn to find Haldir standing there. You are immediately overwhelmed by panic and begin to stammer out an explanation for how you came to be holding his personal things, violating his privacy. “I…the wind…they were blowing away and…”. Hot tears well up in your eyes and are soon spilling down your cheeks, partly from embarrassment at the situation but mostly as the feelings you’ve been keeping pent up threaten to come flooding out all at once. “I was not trying to…I…”. An involuntary sob robs you of the ability to finish your sentence, though you aren’t sure how you would have finished it had you been able.
At the sound of your sob, he moves forward, quickly closing the distance between you. He hesitantly cups a hand under your jaw and uses his thumb to brush a tear from your cheek. “Please do not cry,” he says. “I would not ever see you in pain if it were in my power to prevent it. I am not upset. These drawings were for you, for your book. You were meant to have them, except the last few, which I hoped to keep as a reminder of these days and how happy I have been.” Your eyes snap up to his face, searching for confirmation that you have correctly understood his words.
“You know that I am not much for talking,” he continues. “But I am a very good observer. I know that you see me for who I am, just as I see you. I see all of the ways that you are kind and interesting and intelligent and beautiful. I have no expectation that you return my feelings, and if all I ever have with you are these three weeks then I will cherish the memory of these weeks through all the long ages of my life. But I would….”
Before he can complete his thought, your body reacts on its own impulse, a pure release of elation. You throw your arms around his neck and bury your face in his broad chest, still crying but now with tears of joy. You hear a sharp intake of breath as he processes your reaction, and for a fraction of a moment he stands motionless and silent before breaking into a smile and wrapping you in his arms. You could live in those arms forever, and now perhaps you will.

I don't know if your requests are open or not if not my apologies you can just ignore this lol but If you could, could you do a haldir x reader where they have the kind of relationship where they're always bickering but it's always seemingly in jest and they both know they don't really mean it but one day haldir is having a bad day and he accidentally goes too far with the usual banter and says something actually mean like maybe makes some comment about how time passes differently for elves and he won't have to suffer you much longer because mortals fade very quickly and dude I dunno angst ending or fluff ending somehow lol?

Pairing: Haldir x (human) Reader
Warnings: Angst, no comfort
Gender neutral, no hair/eyes/skin colour mentioned. might be a little OOC.
A/N:
My dear Haldir! I love him soooo much! AHHHH! My first love!
Thank you for your request, anon! I love it!!! i usually like reading angst, but never wrote any, so idk if i’m good x)
Requests are always open, unless stated otherwise in a post, so don’t hesitate to send anything ;)

From the moment you met, your relationship with Haldir has always been an odd one. To others, people who don’t know either of you, it might seem like you two don’t get along at all; but to the ones who were close to the both of you, they know that behind all your jests and bickering, you really care for eachother.
Some even jockingly said that you acted like an old married couple, but they were quickly chased away by (a flustered) Haldir, while you tried to hide your blush with a forced laugh... Because yes, you both liked (maybe even loved) each other, but were too proud or too scared to admit it.
Because, romance between an elf and a human always end up in tragedy...
...
The day had started normally for you. You woke up a little after sunrise, when the first hushed sounds of elves walking and quietly chatting reached your room... You went to the kitchens to grab something to eat quickly, before going on a small walk in the woods.
You didn’t see Haldir before the early afternoon, when he came back from a short patrol. He looked slightly tired, but was doing a very good job at hiding it. When he parted from his group, you took your chance and walked up to him; you didn’t have the opportunity to tease him for 12 hours... And what was supposed to be a fun time bickering with your friend, took a turn you never expected to take...
You had underestimated how tired Haldir was, and refused to leave him when he told you he wasn’t in the mood for your ‘childish’ behavior. And that word alone started the argument...
Words, said in the heat of moment, that both of you would regret saying later, were thrown back and forth. Both your faces were becoming redder by the second... But then, Haldir said something would’ve never expected him to say:
“Good thing humans’ lives are shorter than elves’; just a few decades and you’ll be off my hands! I wont have to deal with you anymore!”
The silence that followed that sentence was louder than anything known. You could only stare at him with wide eyes and shaky hands, and your face lost all it’s color. You shook your head a little, like you were shaking out of a trance, stumbling back, and tried to swallow the lump that had formed in your throat. You took a step back when Haldir reached out his hand to you. He opened his mouth, but before he could say anything, you ran away from him...
...
2 weeks later...
You had successfully managed to avoid Haldir until now, dodging all his attempt at talking to you... You couldn’t face him just yet. In those past weeks, you had the time to think about what would be better; the decision was not an easy one to take, but you needed to do what was the best for you...
You decided to leave Lothlorien and go to Rivendell for some time, to heal your heart, until you were ready to face Haldir again.
So it’s in secret, but with Lady Galadriel’s blessing, that you prepared your journey. She had sent a message to her dear friend, Lord Elrond, to inform him of your impending arrival.
...
The day of departure had arrived. It was extremely early, and you were pretty sure that you would be able to leave without anyone noticing; but luck wasn’t on your side...
As you turned a corner to the stabbles, with your bags, you came across Orophin, one of Haldir’s brother. He knew what happened between you and his brother, and he didn’t need to ask to know what you were doing.
“Are you leaving for a long time?”
He asked. You bit your lips.
“No idea. I need time away from here, and him... I need time before I face him again, and hear what he has to say..”
You lowered your gaze. Orophin stood by you and put his hand on your shoulder.
“Take your time. Haldir will understand. Rumil and I might have to hold him back from running after you at first, but he will understand..”
Orophin tapped your shoulder lightly, as a silent good bye, and left to probably tell Rumil everything, so they can figure out a way to tell Haldir in the morning. You were thankful for those 2 elves who always treated like a sibling.
You saddled your horse, and, like a shadow, left the place you had call home for years with a heavy heart, not knowing when or if you would come back...

I Heard You
Christmas Fic
Masterlist
Haldir x Neutral Reader
Requested by @reverielibrary
Words: 1,431
Warnings: Fluff, people are jerks, Haldir is a sweetheart
Haldir wasn’t the type to eavesdrop, in fact, as far as he was concerned, everyone’s business was their own.  He still wasn’t sure what made him do it that day, but he had heard your voice and stopped to listen.
“I’ve given up asking for things at Yule,” You said.  “It only ever leads to disappointment and frankly, I’m over it.”
“Come on Y/N,” someone else was talking to you.  “I have no ideas for you, it’s an easy question.”
“No,” You said again. “Don’t get me anything, I mean it. Others always ask and then disregard that advice anyway.  What’s the point of asking, if you aren’t going to listen?  Like last year, for example, I needed a new pair of boots for wandering, or a cloak for travelling, even just a simple flower that I could add to my garden!  Instead, they got me tools for cooking.  We all know I can’t cook, not like my mother used to be able to do, so why bother?”
“They clearly put some thought-”
“No, no they didn’t,” You sighed.  “People ask and then don’t listen to the answer anyway.  The first two items at the time were a necessity, the other was just something nice.  Why is that so difficult?”
“Well, the first two aren’t really gifts then, are they?”  They asked.  “They’re just things you need that you don’t have yet.”
“But that’s what I like! I do a lot of walking, therefore I want things that I can go walking with!  Why is that so hard to understand?  I like my garden, therefore, find me a nice piece to place it, every time I see it, it will make me think of how thoughtful a gift it was, is that so difficult?”
“So, if I get you a flower for your garden this year, that will keep you happy?”
“No, because now you’ve turned it on me as if I’m being unreasonable.”
“You are.  This is all last year, look forward to this year.  I don’t want to disappoint you.”
“Then don’t get me anything.”
“Come on Y/N, it’s Yule, there’ll be gifts being handed out left right and centre, we can hardly have one person missing out.”
You sighed heavily, resigned and tired.  “A new cutting knife for my garden, the blacksmith has told me that mine has virtually seen the end of its days.”
There was silence for a moment.  “And?”
“My hunting arrow stocks are low,” You grumbled.  “And guard has worn thin.  I...would also like a new brooch for my cloak.”
“See, now was that so hard?” They asked, and you gave an unimpressed huff.  “Seriously, stop your worrying about it, I’ve now got this in hand and will get you something.”
You muttered something under your breath that Haldir didn’t catch, as the other elf finally left you alone. He didn’t think too much on it, but he did take note of the things you’d said.  He supposed that he should start thinking about his own Yule gifts to friends and family, yourself included, and maybe he could arrange it with someone on who would get what.
That quickly changed when he overheard the elf that had been talking to you, talking to someone else.
“Honestly, Y/N needs to learn to grow up,” They grumbled.  “It is a season of giving gifts, not asking for things you need.”
“You got it out of them then?”  someone else asked.
“Yes, but I’m not actually going to use any of it.  Honestly, we go through the same routine every year, you’d think they’d learn.”
The two of them chuckled off together, not realising Haldir was standing there, giving a dark look after them.
What was the point of asking someone what they wanted of they were just going to ignore it anyway? That didn’t make sense to him, and it sounded like that elf wasn’t even going to tell anyone else, meaning you’d have another year of things you didn’t ask for.
Haldir remembered seeing some of those items once, a painful grimace on your lips as you tried to gratefully thank them.  From memory, that year had been particularly painful, and he recalled seeing you just a little upset, although you’d refused to show it.
He wasn’t about to let that happen again.
It took a little but, but he eventually got the information he was after, and then he set a couple of things in motion.  If anyone noticed any difference in him, they didn’t say anything, despite how busy he had suddenly made himself.
Then he heard you weren’t going to the Yule festivities, and it almost destroyed his plan.  After a lot of consideration though, he decided that it would be better.
A gentle knock on your door, and angry words quickly died on your lips as you answered, letting out a slightly defeated sigh.  “Hello Haldir.”
He didn’t take it to heart, he had a feeling he knew what you were going through.  “Hello Y/N. I...heard you weren’t coming today, so I thought I’d bring your gifts over.  I hope you don’t mind the intrusion?”
Your mouth opened a couple of times, having not expected this, but finally you shook your head and stepped back.  “No, not at all, come on in.”
Haldir followed after you, and there was no missing the slightly apprehensive look you gave towards the box in his hands, but he ignored it.  “Do you mind if I ask what changed your mind about coming today?”
Sighing, you sat.  “I don’t mind, but I would prefer if it didn’t go past us, although I have a feeling that others already know.”  He nodded.  “People around here don’t seem to want to accept peoples wishes.  When I said ‘get me nothing’, they insisted. When they finally got it out of me, they ignored me anyway.  I don’t want to be around people like that.”  Your eyes went back to the box that he was holding.  “You...didn’t ask, which is...why I’m letting you in.  You don’t ire for something you haven’t done.”
He let a smile tug at his lips.  “I wouldn’t be so quick to accept Y/N, I, um, may have heard you talking the other day to someone, getting just a little exasperated.”
“Oh,” You looked away, and he could see your embarrassment.  “I guess I have been...a bit over the top with it all.”
“I don’t think so,” he said gently.  “If people can’t accept your wishes, time and time again especially, then it’s expected that you would get angry or frustrated.”  He held out the box to you.  “Here.”
You took it with some trepidation, but he didn’t blame you, but he quickly watched your expression change when you pulled out what was inside.
A new knife glinted in the light, it was almost white in colour, but on the handle were inlaid, tiny blue flowers, ones you ran your fingers over in awe.  Next, came a set of arrows, all perfectly and meticulously made, that it almost made you not want to use them, paired with a good, high quality, solid leather guard.  Finally, matching the flowers on the knife, came a small floral brooch, one you held flat in your hand, which you couldn’t seem to take your eyes off.
Nerves bubbled in his stomach, but he kept that hidden.  “These...were what you wanted, correct?”
Your gaze met his, and he was shocked to see your eyes shining with tears.  The brooch was quickly put down as you stood and threw your arms around him.
“Thank you,” You said, barely holding onto your emotions as you held him.  “Thank you so much Haldir, you have no idea what this means.”
Haldir smiled and returned the hold.  “I think I do, so you are very welcome.”
You sniffed and pulled away. “You didn’t have to do that for me.”
He nodded.  “I did and I wanted to, and nothing you say is going to change my mind on the matter.  I...actually have one more thing, if you don’t mind?”
Your eyes widened and he pulled a small pot out, a single blue flower growing nicely within, and your hand actually shook as you took it.
“I just wanted you to feel a bit special, that I heard you,” he said quietly.  “Happy Yule, Y/N.”
The tears started, and you put the flower down before wrapping your arms around him again, burying against him, Haldir holding you, his hands soothing.  He mightn’t have intentionally heard what you needed, but he was glad that he had.

I don't know if this is good, or if its a bit rushed and dull. I just wanted to get some requests done.
Tumblr media
You cursed to yourself and you hid in a small cavern, staying as quiet as you could, hoping you had managed to lose the band of orcs you had run across, and had run from.
Checking the wound on your leg you were relieved it was not too deep, though it did make it hard to walk. Sliding down and sitting, you remained silent and you listened to your surroundings. A few moments passed before you began to think about the events that had occurred throughout the day.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
"I just don't understand why you don't trust me Haldir" you said with anger laced in your voice as you quickly walked down the steps of the palace.
"I do trust you Y/n" Haldir's gentle voice said from behind you as he followed you.
You spun around, causing him to stop abruptly "It doesn't seem like it. Any time there is danger, no matter how small, you get in my way as though I cannot handle it."
"I am simply protecting you."
"I do not need protecting! I can handle myself Haldir, you know that I am skilled enough, I just don't understand why you can't let me prove it." You spun back around and quickly left, Haldir watched as you did, not continuing to follow you.
After your argument, you agreed to go on a solo scouting mission to check the surroundings lands outside of Lothlórien. It was supposed to be simple. But, with your luck, you managed to run into a band of orcs. You were able to kill most of them, but being alone, you could not handle all of them, so you had to flee to save your own life.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Now as you sat in the damp dark cavern, you thought of how angry Haldir might be. Would you be proving his point? Or yours? Either way, you felt annoyed that you ended up getting stuck in this situation at all.
You wanted Haldir to see your potential, your strength. To see you. Your feelings for him almost made you desperate for his attention and approval. Yet he still felt like he had to protect you.
Having heard no sign of any orcs, you rose slowly as you began to leave the cavern. Making your way back towards Lothlórien, all the while wondering what you would say to Haldir when you saw him.
- - -
Haldir paced in front of the gates anxiously. When he found out you had gone on a scouting missing alone he felt his chest tighten. He always went with you. But his mind kept flashing back to your argument. You thought he was protective because he did not think you capable. In reality, it was because he had feelings for you, well beyond your friendship. He knew you were fully capable of taking care of yourself, but the fear that he might lose you was stronger. So he often took charge and stepped in, stopping you from having to fight, but you only saw it as an insult.
Haldir let out a defeated sigh as he looked up to the sky. You were late. You were supposed to return hours before. It was taking everything in his being not to chase after you, to go look for you. That urge was too strong, and as Haldir gave into it he began to walk towards the exiting path of the palace, but halted when a figure appeared out of the darkness.
You stopped when you saw Haldir approaching, and he stopped when his eyes landed on you. You saw his eyes rake over your figure, a small frown appeared as he spotted the dirt, blood and grime on your clothes.
You let out a breath before you began to approach him, as he moved to meet you you spoke before he could "There is a large band or orcs moving on the outskirts of Lothlórien, I've already alerted the guards at the outer gates."
Haldir, though having heard what you said, ignored it "Are you alright, you're injured."
"I'm fine Haldir. Just a small wound to my leg, nothing to worry about, I had it handled and I was smart enough to know I could not take on all of the orcs, so I made my escape."
Haldir could hear the defensiveness behind our voice, you were still upset, and probably more so now that you returned injured when you were surely trying to prove a point. A small sad smile spread across his face as his emotions rose, he suddenly reached out, pulling you into a hug.
You staggered as you were pulled forward so suddenly feeling as though you were about to fall over, but Haldir kept you steady. You also found yourself speechless as Haldir wrapped his arms around you tightly. You had known him long enough to know that he was not a hugger, not that you were complaining. You hoped he could not feel your heart hammering heavily in your chest.
As he pulled away, he saw the confusion and shock in your face from his actions. He smiled, amused before he spoke "I am glad you are alright. And before yo saw anything else, let me speak." As you remained silent, he continued "I never act protective over you because I think you cannot handle yourself. I know you can. I simply-" he hesitation for a moment, trying to gather himself "I am protective because of how much I care for you, I act out of my fear of losing you."
You stared into his eyes as he spoke, seeing the apprehension and fear behind them. He did care for you. But you failed to see that it was anything more than friendship.
You spoke quietly "I care about you too Haldir, but trust me that I can handle myself. I will not be so careless as to let myself killed. "
He sighed, realizing you were still not understanding him. It was almost painful. Figuring that there was only one way to make it obvious what he meant, he used his courage while he had it.
Haldir grabbed you again, and for a moment you thought he was pulling you in for another hug. But your mind went blank when, instead of his arms wrapping around you, his lips crashed against yours as he kissed you fervently.
His hands continued to grip lightly around your arms as he kissed you. He was not sure how long he had his lips against yours before he pulled away. He watched as your eyes fluttered open, your gaze wide as you were clearly surprised.
Haldirs voice was quiet as he spoke "I do not care for you simply as a friend anymore Y/n. My fear of losing you is not the same as losing a friend. It is the fear of losing someone I love, without them ever knowing I love them."
You opened your mouth to speak, but remained speechless. You had been wrong, so wrong. "Haldir I-" you were unsure of what to say.
"It is alright Y/n, I do not need you to humor me if you do not feel the same."
"No Haldir, I do." Haldir looks at you in surprise "I just....I never thought you had seen me the same way."
Haldir smiled lightly "And I thought the same. We were both blind to the others feelings it seems."
"So it does" you replied quietly.
Haldir could not stop himself from gazing at your lips again, having now kissed you once, he could not stop the desire to do it again. He saw your lips curl into a small smile before he moved to meet your eyes, seeing you watching him closely.
A small smile spread across his face as well before he reached up, lightly placing his hand against your cheek before you both met in a kiss. This one more gently, slow, and careful. Both of your thoughts erasing the days previous argument and fears, now solely focusing on each other.
xx

Blog Update:
So I feel like as a silm and lotr fandom community, we’ve more or less collectively agreed that elves (and dwarves etc) are pretty queer in sexual orientation and usually falling along the pan/bi range with at least sexual experiences if not marriages. Also, I feel most of us who write are queer or at least pro-lgbtq/allies.
However, the majority of the fics - in general and insert elf(ves) x reader - are cishet pairings. And if they aren’t cishet, it’s cis mlm (which is why I absolutely adore how much trans Fingon and Maedhros exist).
Of course, just because a pairing is cishet doesn’t mean the characters themselves are (as in, Elrond is still bi regardless even if he’s having sex with a cis woman or not), but as a non-binary afab sapphic person I’m tired of not seeing more trans and enby and sapphic and ace representation. As in, visibly queer elves and their pairings.
And I originally started this sideblog to have more of that, not less.
I’m going to finish out any requests I have already along cishet veins and any NSFW alphabet requests since I usually do reader gender neutral anyway, so don’t worry about that. And Haldir and his OFC wife will probably be around to a certain extent because I kind of love her, but overall moving forward I’ve made the decision to only write visibly queer fics, imagines, etc. Eg, at least one person being gender neutral or trans or it being a non-het pairing. I may make exceptions for some polyamorous fics because that’s outside typical societal constraints, as well.
I will probably make some exceptions if someone reaches out for something specific or for a personal choice, but I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. It’s just that the majority of what I write will be visibly queer.
If you’re offended, you may want to take a look at why you’re offended. Positive representation matters, especially in a world where queer people are being increasingly persecuted and hate-crimed if you weren’t already where they live.
And again, I’ll finish out any cishet requests and I will make occasional exceptions (idk maybe it’s your birthday ya know), so please reach out if you have any questions or want to discuss.
Stay safe, stay strong, and as always (no matter the time of year): Happy Pride.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions and I’ll do my best to address them. Thanks and Happy Holidays! ❤️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

If you’re curious, some things I’m currently working on:
NSFW Sapphic Alphabet Tauriel
NSFW Arwen’s wife getting revenge for all her teasing
NSFW Galadriel absolutely ruining a sub with her strap
SFW Arwen and her wife relaxing in the gardens
And honestly, I love a trans and/or non-binary Haldir so I may not even change much there

Anomaly (Haldir Oneshot)
Summary: Haldir meets you, a member of the Fellowship seeking passage through Lothlorien. Though not a fan of humans, he is curious about you.
Pairing: Haldir x F!Reader
Word Count: 5,111
Warnings/Disclaimers: A curse word. Some violence due to the Battle of Hornburg/Helm’s Deep and Minas Tirith. Injury, mentions of blood.
A/N: This is told more from Haldir’s perspective. Based off another weird dream I had. Threw in a bit of the book as well. Really wanted to get this out cuz my boi needs more love.

Haldir gazed at you from afar while he was on watch that evening. You were... peculiar to him. When he came across the Fellowship trying to pass through the Golden Wood, he never expected to find a human woman in their midst. The world of man was an anomaly to him despite his numerous interactions over hundreds of years. Human women were not granted the same rights and privileges as the men, a foreign to him. This was not the way of Elven culture. Meeting you there was refreshing in a way.
In conversing with Aragorn, he learned you were a soldier of Gondor who had traveled alongside Boromir and joined the Fellowship. You were a fierce warrior but kept a calm air about you. The few human female fighters he had come across, be it on purpose or part of their nature, generally overcompensated, feeling the need to prove themselves constantly. You did not. When the Marchwarden and his company initially surrounded the Fellowship, everyone drew their weapons, ready for the next challenge. You opted to place your hands on Frodo’s and Sam’s shoulders to calm them while Merry and Pippin stood at either side. Instead of fear or anger, Haldir saw an analytical curiosity gleaming in your eyes.
Even now as he kept you in his peripheral, your eyes held a certain light, a light not caused by reflecting the bright moon. It was a kind of serenity most humans rarely portrayed. It didn’t break even as pounding of ambitious orc feet hit the forest floor below. All you did was gently shift your arms that held two sleep-ridden hobbits.
Since the platforms amongst the trees were not large enough to contain both the Fellowship and Haldir’s party together, you had to be split apart. Aragorn kept you, Legolas, Frodo and Sam while Boromir, Gimli, Merry and Pippin rested on a neighboring platform. You had taken to the Hobbits just as much Boromir had, your arms wrapped around them with their heads resting on either shoulder. How you bonded with the curious creatures so well, Haldir would never know. You managed to bring a semblance of peace to their aching hearts, enough so they could rest. He could not imagine it was an easy feat considering all the Fellowship had been through. It made him wonder what Lady Galadriel would make of you.
Tumblr media
Upon reaching Caras Galadhon, you practically vibrated with childish delight. Although you had been to Rivendell, you had never seen anything quite like the capital city, that much Haldir was certain. The corners of his mouth tugged into the faintest of smiles when he saw your elated face. He turned away to restore his stoic facade, but unknowingly caught the attention of another. Aragorn shot him a knowing smirk as their eyes met momentarily. Haldir said nothing and continued to lead the way up the stairs spiraling the ancient trees.
Up the stairs, across some bridges and the Fellowship was in the presence of Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn. Haldir bared witness to the interactions from the sidelines. He knew when Lady Galadriel entered each of their minds through their minute expressions. While most struggled to remain slightly neutral to her ministrations, others had a difficult time hiding their horror. You, on the other hand, parted your lips with an acute tilt of your head, not bothering to mask your wonder or amusement.
The meeting came to a close shortly after. Lady Galadriel’s gaze swept over the group, ultimately landing on you. Haldir knew she would call upon you later that evening. Until then, he was tasked with guiding the Fellowship to where they would be resting.
Tumblr media
It was long after the others had gone to bed, after Frodo returned from the mirror, when Haldir learned he was correct. He spied you and Lady Galadriel wandering the halls, speaking softly amongst yourselves. What about, he could not say. He swiftly took the next pathway so as not to intrude on your private moment.
Marchwarden. Please come.
Always the obedient one, he turned himself around to join you both.
He greeted the pair of you with a bow.
“Marchwarden,” Lady Galadriel responded with a smile. “Would you be so kind as to escort our guest back to her company? The hour is late, and she deserves just as much rest as her friends.”
“Of course, my lady.”
Haldir held out his arm for you to take which you did after properly bidding Lady Galadriel a good night with a bow. He led you along the walkways, taking his time in doing so. This would more than likely be one of the few times he would be able to speak with you alone. The Fellowship would continue on their quest as soon as possible.
“These woods are truly a wonder. I have never experienced anything quite like it,” you started, breaking the quiet between you, voice so delicate it was hard to believe you were the warrior Aragorn made you out to be.
An agreeing hum quietly rumbled in his throat. “It is a gem of Middle Earth.”
“I must agree. I think I can understand your fierce desire to protect this place, your home.”
“I am sure you wish to protect Gondor just as much. Your dedication to the Fellowship is proof of that.”
“Despite the hardships,” you tried to hide the way you sucked in a breath, “I am glad to be a part of this. They have all become like family to me.”
Gandalf.
Hearing the grief lightly laced in your voice, Haldir stopped and pulled his arm away just enough to take your hand, turning to stand in front of you. With his free hand he cupped your cheek to catch the stray tear that had escaped your lashes. He was at a loss for words. Comforting others was not a skill commonly taught to Marchwardens. You caught his hand before he had a chance to think about retracting it, leaning into his touch. He closed the last bit of distance between you two and stroked the swell of your cheek with his thumb, your eyes shutting to bask in the moment.
An eternity or mere moments passed. Neither of you could tell by the time you finally spoke. “Thank you.”
Tumblr media
The day your company was set to leave, Haldir felt a small pang in his heart. Why was he so bothered by your departure? He had only had the one major interaction with you. The rest of his time was spent either training or on patrol, and on patrol really meant him keeping an eye on the Fellowship. You just happened to be around when he took watch, or so he tried to convince himself.
He stood aside as Lady Galadriel offered her gifts to the travelers, giving them each something they would need or want. She bestowed on you a small Elven dagger, tiny enough to conceal in a boot with little discomfort. The Marchwarden, though content you had some extra to defend yourself with, hoped you would never need to use it.
Haldir then brought the Fellowship to the boats where everyone’s belongings were already packed and settled. He couldn’t bring himself to look at you while everyone said their proper farewells, but nothing stopped him from following down river to the borders. He and his troupe had orders to make sure you all reached them safely anyways.
Despite being hidden amongst the trees, it was like you knew he was there. Your head turned towards him as you passed the borders, not making eye contact but still unnervingly close to it. A tiny smile graced your lips before returning to the task at hand.
Tumblr media
Helm’s Deep was not where the Marchwarden wanted to be, but he still had his orders. He was charged with leading an Elven army to help defend the kingdom of Rohan. Entering the gates, he was speaking with a perplexed King Théoden when what was left of your party rounded the corner. Your grin shone brightly in the dark when Aragorn surprised him with an embrace.
Haldir found himself both pleased and upset by your presence. While you looked to be in good health, he did not know your full battle prowess and as such was unsure how you would handle the soon-to-be battlefield. However, he never had the chance to voice his concerns as he needed to position his soldiers.
The rain poured when the standoff with the Orcs and Uruk-hai began, pinging off of helmets loudly. Haldir stood among his fellow Elves. Aragorn spread the rest of you out, sending you to the opposite end of Helm’s Deep where Haldir’s view was partially obscured. He could at least see you standing proudly alongside the other men. He could only imagine the fire in your eyes.
When the battle began, it raged with seemingly no good end in sight. A section of the wall had exploded with Aragorn near enough to be caught in the blast. Haldir could hear you bark your clear and concise orders to the men as you rushed to help Aragorn. Upon reaching his feet, Aragorn yelled out the order to retreat further in to better protect the caves the women and children were hiding in. Haldir belayed the orders in his native tongue to his soldiers.
He made sure the soldiers retreated but was unable to do so himself. Surrounded by the enemy on a high ledge, he slashed through them in an attempt to make a path for himself. His weariness had caught up with him as he was hit in the side with a jagged weapon.
“Marchwarden!”
He spun around as someone called him, ready to slice through his assailant. It fell to the ground as he faced it, revealing you with a now broken sword which you cast away. You stepped over the dead enemy to get a better look at him. Haldir clutched his side when you tried to check on his wound.
“How bad is it?”
“You should be retreating,” he tried to dodge the question.
“As should you,” you answered sternly, locking eyes with him. “Are you still able to keep moving?”
“Yes.”
“Good. We must go quickly.”
You reached out to help him when your breath hitched. You lurched towards him, grabbing his free arm to pull him forward, the motion catapulting you behind him. You ripped the dagger from your boot as you continued towards the Orc that had snuck up behind Haldir, and shoved it between the layers of its armor. In the creature’s last breath, it brought down its sword on your shoulder, forcing you to your knees.
Haldir rushed to your side, stabbing the Orc once more for good measure before shoving it off the ledge. He kneeled in front of you, clenching his jaw to ignore the pain in his side, and held you steady by your upper arms. Your eyes were glassing over while you desperately tried to keep your head up to look at him.
He called out your name. “We need to follow the others. Are you able to stand?”
You blinked a few times before hoarsely whispering, “I... I don’t... know.”
Your shoulder bled profusely as Haldir tried to help you stand. He took on most of your weight with your arm over his shoulder. You wouldn’t last much longer without a healer’s attention. Biting back his own pain, he practically carried you down the stairs to solid ground where Aragorn met you. He and what little was left of the soldiers who had not yet retreated formed around the two of you, furiously slicing at the Orcs and Uruk-hai that would stop you from reaching the main halls.
Soldiers who were protecting the doors ushered you inside immediately where Haldir brought you into the caves for the healers to watch over. One tried to make him sit momentarily to tend to his own injury, but he brushed them away. He could still continue. His ribs were probably bruised, if not broken, but his armor kept the damage from being life threatening. He promptly left to speak with Aragorn about the next plan of attack. He would be damned if he allowed any of those foul beings to pass into the caves to finish the job.
Tumblr media
The battle was won, Gandalf having arrived with reinforcements right when they needed him most. When victory was assured, the Marchwarden wasted no time in returning to the caves where you lay unconscious. The healers bandaged you to the best of their abilities given the circumstances, and you were at least breathing steadily.
Much to the surprise of his fellow elves and your company, Haldir rarely left your side, even during the trek back to Edoras. He was still there when you woke safely in the Golden Halls of Meduseld.
Your eyes struggled to open as you stirred awake. “Wh-what happened?” Your voice was hoarse from sleep and lack of water.
“You were struck down, Mellon nin.” Haldir brushed a rogue strand of hair from your forehead and placed his hand on yours. “We were able to retreat to the caves.”
“And the battle?” Your arms shook as you tried to sit up and lean your weight on your good side. “The outcome?”
The Marchwarden tried to settle you back down, but you would not relent. “We were victorious. Gandalf arrived with reinforcements at dawn and drove the enemy out.”
You began to relax at that before another question flooded your mind. “What about-”
“Your friends are well,” he chuckled at your persistence. “They are preparing to leave for Isengard soon. Word has returned that it has fallen.”
Before you had a chance to ask another question, he helped you sit up the rest of the way so as not to aggravate your wound further with your stubbornness and handed you a glass of water. You drank it slowly despite your need to relinquish your thirst.
“Thank you.” You passed the glass back to him, your voice clearer now. “When do they leave?”
“Tomorrow morning, I believe,” Haldir answered and coaxed you to lay back down.
You nodded with a hum. “I suppose I should rest more, then. If there is a chance that Merry and Pippin are there and well, I would like to be there.”
“Mellon nin, your injury is not yet healed.”
“A mere shoulder wound will not prevent me from riding to Isengard,” you huffed.
“It is nothing to scoff at. Mellon nin, you almost died,” he pleaded with you, taking one of your hands in both of his.
“Haldir, I still have my duty to the Fellowship. I cannot abandon them.”
“Tending to your health is not abandoning anyone,” he spoke softly as he ran a thumb across your knuckles. “You will still be able to continue your quest when you have healed.”
You sighed deeply, looking to the ceiling as though collecting your thoughts. “I just... This is something I feel like I need to do.”
A deafening silence showered the room. Haldir studied you for a moment, your unencumbered hand fiddling with the sheets. Your mind was made up, and there was nothing he could do.
“Mellon nin,” he breathed, reaching for your face so you would look at him. “You will not let this go, will you?”
You shook your head with determined yet pleading eyes.
He squeezed your hand gently. “Then, I suppose all I can ask of you is to get your rest tonight.”
“Thank you.” With a smile, your thumb glided over his.
He made to stand so you could sleep in peace without him hovering. As he pulled his hand away, you gripped it tighter.
“Haldir? Will you stay? At least until I fall asleep? I am not sure I wish to be alone right now.”
Taken aback, he stood there dumbly before retaking his seat. “Of course, Mellon nin.”
Tumblr media
The next morning, the remaining members of the Fellowship gathered at the stables. Aragorn was in the middle of trying to convince you to stay behind. Gandalf stood out of the way with Gimli, biting back a laugh at Aragorn’s futile efforts, while Haldir and Legolas prepared the horses.
“You will only worsen your injury,” Aragorn chided.
You folded your arms defiantly across your chest. “One trip on horseback is not so arduous.”
“She has already made up her mind, Aragorn. I doubt you will be able to change it,” Gandalf chimed in.
Haldir was tightening the saddle on the horse that would carry you so it was more secure when Legolas silently sidled up to him. “You have already said your peace, have you not?”
“What makes you say that?” Haldir twisted the saddle to test it.
“You have barely left her side since our victory. You must have spoken with her before now,” Legolas quipped.
“Indeed, I have.”
“Then, surely in your fondness of her you would have tried to convince her to stay behind.”
“Fondness?” Haldir stilled a moment before adjusting the straps again. “We are friends, Legolas. Nothing more.”
“Then why is it you have been meticulously preparing this one horse whilst I have already saddled three?” Legolas shot him a pointed smirk.
The Marchwarden felt himself flush all the way to the tips of his ears. “She is still injured. I- We cannot risk her hurting herself further.”
Legolas held his chuckle in his throat as a hum. “The sooner you stop attempting to fool yourself, Mellon-”
“Alright, you may join us!” Aragorn growled with a huff, stealing the attention of the bickering elves. “However, the moment a battle should arise, you are to return here.”
“Of course,” you complied, a stubborn edge to your voice.
Aragorn’s heavy sigh was littered with grit. “Are the horses ready?”
Haldir and Legolas nodded swiftly.
“Good. Let us be on our way.”
You made your way to the Marchwarden who was beckoning you over.
“Are you sure there is nothing I can do to change your mind, Mellon nin?” he asked softly.
“I am, yes.”
You flashed a smile at him before placing a foot in the stirrup. Haldir remained hovering near you. Your shoulder strained as you willed your arms to reach the saddle, steadying yourself as you pushed down on the stirrup to lift yourself up. Midway up, you lost your grip as your shoulder suddenly gave out. Haldir was quick to press a hand to your back to stop your fall. He noticed how your jaw tensed to grind out what was obviously the pain of your wound, but you were still determined to mount the horse.
“Here.” He gripped your waist. “I apologize if this seems forward.”
He raised you enough so you could swing your leg over the saddle, letting you go the moment you had your balance.
“N-not at all. Thank you.”
You held the reins tightly as you settled down, knuckles turning white like it could make everything better. Haldir felt his chest tighten and covered one of your hands with his own, eyes filled with concern. Your head snapped down to meet his gaze. With a reassuring yet forced smile, you attempted to relax your muscles to conceal just how much your injury hurt, but he saw right through it.
With a heavy sigh and shake of his head, he took hold of the saddle and hoisted himself up behind you.
“What are you-”
“If your pain is that severe, you shall not ride alone,” Haldir interrupted, finality in his tone.
“Haldir, this is not necessary,” you argued as he pulled the reins from your hands.
Legolas slinked by with Gimli on their horse, sending you two a knowing smile. The Marchwarden’s blush bled to his ears again. He didn’t notice your own flushed face.
Haldir cleared his throat. “Let us go before we fall behind.”
Tumblr media
The journey to Isengard was quiet and uneventful. Partway through the trip, you finally allowed yourself to relax, not realizing you were leaning back into Haldir. Though bemused, he was not about to protest.
Collecting Merry and Pippin was as simple as it was amusing. They were most excited about reuniting with their companions. It was on the ride back that you and Haldir overheard their teasing about you sharing a horse. Aragorn and the others bit back grins and commentary of their own.
The festivities that followed upon returning to Edoras were no better, the ale at least partly to blame. The Marchwarden and what remained of his soldiers were settled near Legolas who was currently in the middle of a drinking match with Gimli. You had yet to arrive. Eowyn was the only reason Haldir was not at your side forcing you to rest. She tended to your shoulder, promising to return you for the celebration. He would have preferred you did not come for the sake of your health, but as long as you were not overexerting yourself again, he would not complain.
He swirled the ale in his mug after taking a swig, mulling over recent events. Usually he was not one to allow his emotions control his actions, and yet he was doing that much more often now. He felt like he couldn’t help himself. There was this overwhelming desire to keep you safe, keep you close, regardless of the fact that you were perfectly capable of handling yourself. Haldir had caught a glimpse of your abilities at Helm’s Deep. There was a reason you had gone to Rivendell with Boromir and joined the Fellowship.
As if to break him of his spiraling thoughts before they grew out of control, one of his neighboring elves nudged his arm, winking and motioning him to look up. He lifted his gaze, about to make a remark for the elf’s teasing, when he saw Eowyn stepping into the room with you close at her side.
The music, shouts, laughter - they all faded away from his ears. You practically radiated light despite your nervous self on display. Eowyn had lent you one of her dresses, the fabric draping differently on your frame from hers yet no less perfect. She caught Haldir’s gawking and whispered something in your ear with a smirk. You glanced up to see him but dipped your head back down to where your hair curtained your tiny, bashful smile. Eowyn was quick to tuck the offending hair behind your ear. She giggled and murmured to you again, resulting in your flustered rush to join your companions.
Haldir focused on his ale once again. The elf who had coaxed him into looking up bumped his arm. Without saying a word, he was fully encouraging his captain to go to you. The elves in his company had never seen their normally reserved, stoic Marchwarden act like this before, and they thought it a fantastic development. They all joined in pestering him to at least ask you for a dance. It took a while, but his stubbornness crumbled, and he brought himself to his feet only to notice you were missing from your company. He scanned the crowds, hoping to spot you. Maybe someone else had already asked you to dance. That theory was thankfully doused when he spied the swish of your dress through a door leading outside.
Following and stepping out into the cool night air, he found you leaning forward on the wooden railing, gazing up at the stars. Your hair sparkled under the dim light. He realized tonight was the first time he had seen you without it tied or braided back out of the way.
“Mellon nin,” Haldir called to you softly so as not to startle you. “Are you alright?”
You turned to see him just outside of the door and nodded with a tired smile. “Yes. I just felt I needed some fresh air and a moment away from the crowd.”
“I apologize for disturbing you. I will-”
“No!” You cut him off quickly. “I mean... You did not disturb anything. You can stay if you would like.”
The corners of Haldir’s lips tugged upwards ever so slightly as he approached you, joining you in your previous stargazing. The peaceful quiet of the night muffled the festivities in the building. He felt you cover his hand with your own accompanied by a gentle squeeze.
“Thank you, Haldir, for everything,” your voice was just above a whisper.
“I should be thanking you, Mellon nin,” he shook his head, his other hand coming to grasp yours. “If you had not come for me, I would not be at your side now.”
A breathy chuckle passed your lips. “I suppose we are even then.”
Haldir hummed questioningly.
“Had you not brought me with you whilst retreating, then I would not be at your side now.” You parroted the last words with a grin.
The Marchwarden’s shoulders shook with a quiet laughter. “I cannot argue against that.”
You set your free hand on top of your conjoined ones as you leaned against his shoulder. A comforting silence befell you both. That is until you heard chittering giggles from behind. The pair of you turned to see Merry and Pippin poking their heads from the doorway, followed by Aragorn who proceeded to drag them back inside and shot you a wink as he did so.
Tumblr media
Gondor had called for aid. Rohan answered. The army’s camp was set up, and Aragorn had a plan. Haldir received orders for his company to continue helping Rohan and meet with Elrond to receive more explicit directions.
The morning for departure arrived, and Aragorn was set to travel to the Paths of the Dead. Legolas, Gimli, Haldir and you were to join him. Haldir’s soldiers were to follow King Théoden into battle. You all stood wearily at the start of the trail, feeling the ominous air seeping down to the bone.
Haldir brushed his hand against your elbow for your attention. “May I speak with you privately?”
You looked up at him with worried eyes and nodded, probably guessing what this was about. He pulled you to the side just out of earshot of the others.
He steeled himself with a deep breath. “I must insist you do not join us, Mellon nin.”
“But Haldir, I-”
“Please, Meleth nin,” he desperately pleaded, not meaning to let the new term of endearment slip. Tenderly cupping your face with both hands, he continued, “None of us know how this will end. We... We may not come back. I beg of you to please stay with Eowyn.”
His voice was hushed, afraid it would break if he attempted to speak any louder. He knew his emotions were on full display, but he could not bring himself to care. What mattered was keeping you safe.
“Haldir...” you trailed off, grasping at his wrists with the utmost care to keep them in place. You gave a quick nod and tried to conceal your worried frown. “Alright. However. You had better- You all had better return.”
He pressed his forehead to yours. “I will do everything in my power to do just that.”
Tumblr media
The Marchwarden was among the Fellowship in Minas Tirith when he saw a barely conscious Eowyn being carried into the Houses of Healing. Panic coursed through his veins. You were nowhere to be found. He rushed over to her as she was laid on a bed.
“Lady Eowyn, what happened?”
She nearly didn’t recognize him. All of her effort was put into focusing on his words.
“Lady Eowyn, please. Where is she?” He held his breath like it would help him hear better.
With a tiny shake of her head, she croaked quietly, “I am sorry... We... We were separated... in battle... I know not... her fate...”
Haldir stepped aside to allow the healers in. His heart was at a standstill. Had he known Eowyn was going to sneak her way into the army, he would have pleaded with you to return to Rohan. Your injury did not have the time to fully heal. Fighting in such a strenuous battle would do you no good. He needed to find you. He needed to know that you were well.
Bursting through the doors, he raced down the stairs for the lower levels, Aragorn shouting something after him. He did not hear a word. Canopies were set up and homes were open near the gate for the soldiers who were unable to reach the Houses of Healing. Haldir weaved through the injured in a desperate attempt to find you. He’d rather discover you here as long as you were among the living.
After a fruitless search under the canopies, he began entering the opened homes. He asked anyone able for a person matching your description. Nothing. Nothing until he reached the last home. There you were towards the back of the room. An older woman had just stepped away from helping you. The armor you had borrowed like Eowyn was in a pile to the side. He could see the bandage on your thigh through the tear in your trousers, but other than that you came away from the battle fairly unharmed. How you managed that with a preexisting injury was a mystery to him.
“Meleth nin,” Haldir breathed, making his way to you. This time he meant to use the term.
Somehow, you heard him over the throng of people, your gaze meeting his. “Haldir!”
You rose to your feet a little too quickly and swayed unintentionally to put your weight onto your good leg. Haldir darted to you just in time, bringing you into his embrace.
“You’re alright...” He rested his forehead on yours just like before you departed, completely forgetting those around you. “I was beginning to think my search was for naught.”
Wrapping your arms around him, you buried your face in his chest. “Haldir, I... I’m so sorry. I know you meant to keep me from harm-”
“Shhh,” he cooed, settling his chin on the crown of your head. “I know. There is no need to apologize. All that matters is that you are here and well.”
Your light chuckle vibrated through him. “You are much too patient with me.”
“I assume you are not familiar with that.”
“You would be right.” He could feel your cheeks lift as you smiled. “Most tend to leave when I grow stubborn.”
Haldir shifted his face so it rested in your hair, murmuring into your scalp, “I am not going anywhere, Meleth nin.”
The world of man was still an anomaly to him. You were an anomaly within that world, and he wouldn’t have you any other way.
