Bucky Barnes saying I love you to y/n for the first time (super fluffy) <3
Must Be Love - Bucky Barnes
Omg I just finished watching Queen Charlotte and I'm feeling so romantical it's why I didn't post anything yet I'm watching so many tv shows on my list but fear not I've come bearing gifts.
You and Bucky hadn't had a relationship but the tension was very thick even Zemo had pointed out when you were fighting Flag-Smasher.
Zemo was not wrong though you really liked Bucky you always found yourself smiling when Bucky was around whether he was being funny or serious. He made your tummy tickle with butterflies. You were always excited to see him he was something you wanted to see every day. you always thought of asking him out but you were scared and nervous you didn't want to ruin what you had with asking him out.
Bucky had a soft spot for you he got mad as Zemo when he was teasing you. He always made jokes to hear those beautiful giggles that made his heart flutter. This feeling was odd and scary for him it was so strange caring and loving someone after all those years of pain and torture. He benched you most of the time so you don't get hurt and you noticed and hated it,
He was born in his 20s maybe he thinks that I can't fight because I'm a woman? you thought. it made you mad the way he would give you the easy job. does he think you can't handle it?.
"we will go break Zemo you stay here and find more information about these flag smashers," Bucky said.
you got mad you have had enough of him benching you.
"No, I won't I'm coming with you I'm so tired of you benching me I am strong, stronger than you even so stop treating me like I'm some 19-20s Housewife." you said clearly frustrated
"I know you are strong but I can't risk it."
"Risk what?" you yell
he stays silent
"Risk what? bucky god forbid a woman is better at kicking ass than you?"
"No, it's not like that." He is frustrated but he is trying to hide it,
"Then what! tell me because that's all I can think of ." You said so close to attacking him right now
"Because I love you and I can't protect you out there and losing you would make my life hell than it already is so don't think for one second that I don't think you're strong enough because you got me on a chokehold without touching me."
You were stunned to speak, and you didn't know how to react. It took you a bit to process what he had just told you.
"You love me?" You said just to make sure.
Bucky just nods back, lowering his head down. You place your hand on his cheeks, lifting his face up to look at you.
"James Bucky Barnes, I love you too." You said smiling at him, making him go red.
He kissed you very passionately it was like he waited his whole life for this moment.
You were so caught up in the kiss that you hadn't noticed you were running out of time to pursue Misson plans.

The Long Journey Home Chapter 26: We live out our fears or learn to tame our demons
Tumblr media
     That deep scowl has lessened a little but Bucky remains a little distant, a little preoccupied, as the pair of you explore the areas nearby the amusement park that are linked by the boardwalk. He’s likely thinking of the promise he made to train you and how he’s going to go about it. Disarming him. The need for it. The fact that he’s worried that something could happen to make the training necessary is definitely something to discuss. Later. As tempting as it is to point out it might not matter, that it all depends on how long you stay at his apartment – stay in New York – you leave those things unspoken.
     You end up with a little striped bag of items, mostly postcards gathered to start sending to your family. Bucky surprises you, picking a few out to purchase as well. Was it an act of solidarity so you wouldn’t be the only one shopping or does he have someone in mind to send them to?

Bucky Barnes x Rogers! Reader | Steve Rogers x Sister! Reader
Summary: During Civil War, Tony calls in the only person that can get to both Steve and Bucky. When that person shows up, does a lot of memories.
Warnings: None
A/N: I do tend to switch between Bucky and James a couple times, but it seems fine anyway.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2016
Steve Rogers runs into the airport ready to take off when a piece of tech hits and shorts his escape helicopter. Tony Stark and James Rhodes land in front of Steve before Tony speaks, "Wow, it is so weird how you run into the airport. Isn't that weird?" James responds to Tony's question, "definitely weird." Steve tries to defend Bucky by telling Tony that the doctor that was supposed to 'Help' Bucky was the one who was causing all those problems. T'challa jumps from behind a plane in his 'Black Panther' outfit and greets Steve. Tony explains his situation to Steve, but Steve doesn't give.
"Your old war buddy killed innocent people yesterday," Tony says, trying to reason with his old teammate. Steve continues to stall, "And there are five more super soldiers just like him. I can't let the doctor get to them first." Y/N walks out from the shadows. "Look at who else I found in the airport," Tony says to Steve with a smirk. "Sadly, James and I aren't the same as when you knew us in the '40s," Y/N says before continuing, "If you want to help him, help him by following the law. You're my older brother, and I would hate to see you end up in jail." Steve and Bucky over the coms both say, "Y/N?!"
🖤🖤🖤
1940's
Y/N was laid under the covers, laying chest to chest with her brother's best friend. "Steve eagerly wants to be in the army. I'm already worried about your deployment, why does he need to worry me more?" Y/N was always worried about her brother's safety. Y/N would have a better chance at joining the army than Steve. Her brother had been rejected, and would still continue to do anything to fight for his country.
Bucky was more focused on what had happened before the conversation than worried about his best friend. "Babe, we just had a great time, without worrying about being caught, and your first thought after that was your brother?" Bucky and Y/N have been hiding their relationship from Steve for 3 years. Y/N had liked Bucky ever since she saw him help Steve with his bully when he was 13.
"Sorry, this is time for me and you, not me, you, and my brother," Y/N said before looking up and kissing her boyfriend. One kiss turned into a complete make-out session before the wildly handsome man had to go.
🖤🖤🖤
Y/N was watching her brother get prepped to get the super-soldier serum. She sat with a scared and worried look on her face. She watched Peggy Carter give Steve a look before coming up to watch. "Is he alright," Y/N asks Peggy as she sat down next to the caring sister. "He's all right. The procedure is about to start," Peggy responded.
As the procedure proceeded, the machine looked to be hurting steve. Peggy and Y/N both looked to be worried. Peggy ran out of the watch room and started yelling at the doctor to shut it down. Y/N went into a full panic attack, some of the people around her tried to help her. Sparks flew in the lab when the machine powered off. Y/N thought her brother was dead, so it became harder for her to breathe. The machine opened and Steve looked ten times the man he did before the serum.
Y/N cooled down and went to congratulate her brother. While everyone stood around her brother, the watch room exploded. Everyone ducked, and then there were gunshots. The next thing Y/N knew, Steve was gone.
Steve would soon come back to pick up and comfort his sister. She was always worried about her brother, but she now has caught a glimpse of what might happen with Steve and Bucky in the war. When Steve dropped her off, she immediately went to be comforted by James.
🖤🖤🖤
October 1943
It had been almost a year since Bucky and Steve left for war. They sent the girl letters every week, but she wouldn't get them until 2 weeks later, depending on where they were. Those letters were the only thing at the time that put a smile on her face.
Y/N arrived home from her long day of labor. Ever since the boys left, Y/N was left to pay her and her boyfriend's apartment bills. She picked up a job as a nurse at the local hospital. She loved the patients there, but the job barely paid, mostly because she was a woman.
Before opening her door, she checked her mailbox for any letters. "Let's see. Bills. Bills. LETTER... Wait, I only got one letter." Y/N spoke as she entered her apartment.
Dear Y/N,
You may be wondering, "Where is my second letter?" I am sorry to tell you, you won't be receiving a second letter. I thought that you should hear this from me. I failed you. I failed Bucky. During a mission, I failed to save Bucky. I couldn't grab his hand fast enough before he fell off the train.
I know he meant so much to you. We've all been best friends since 7th grade, and I know about the crush you had on him since we were young.
Before Bucky died, he gave me a message. He said, "I didn't leave you just to fight. I left so that you could have a future. Whether it's on your own or with someone else, I want you to keep going. Do what you told me you wanted to do with your life."
I wish that you wouldn't have to lose me or anyone you care about like this, but I guess that's life.
My deepest regrets,
Steve
The more the woman read the letter, the more tears rolled out of her eyes. She read Bucky's message one more time, imagining him watching her read the letter over her shoulder.
Her grieving was soon interrupted by a loud bang coming from the living room. She folded the letter back up and put it inside the pocket of her uniform. She walked over to Bucky's nightstand, grabbing the revolver he kept in the back. Bucky was a gentleman, but he won't think twice about protecting them if his family was in trouble. He's been protecting the Rogers siblings since he was 13.
She slowly walked into the living room, holding the loaded revolver, just like James had taught her. She quietly turned the corner to see the living room clear. She heard a noise behind the kitchen divider wall, and she started to make her way towards it. She looked and saw nothing. Not letting her guard down, she continued to search the house. She made her way back into the bedroom. Right as she entered the room, went black.
She woke up strapped to a table with a blinding light shining on her. She tried to cover her eyes, but she remembered she was strapped down. She tried to stay calm the best she could.
"Do you know how it feels to have gotten two people close to Captain America? I wasn't sure if you were the right one, but the letter inside your pocket proved that you were the girl we were looking for. Your boyfriend is very much alive, and so far, all he has done is attack everyone. Now, what do you say we compromise?" The man with the swiss accent said.
🖤🖤🖤
2016
Y/N had tried so hard to get her brother to do the right thing, but deep inside she knew she was doing the wrong thing. The fight had started and she followed her love. She tried to tell Spiderman that she knew the best way to handle them. She couldn't get herself alone with the man she loved until he was drug out by redwing. "I don't want to fight you," James says. "I know. I am here to help. I realized that I am fighting for the wrong side. I should be fighting to free you from your prison, not take you to prison," Y/N tells James with a loving look.
Y/N goes in to hug Bucky. Sam watches the interaction confused. "Wait, I'm confused. Who is this?" Bucky looks at Y/N before telling Sam, "this is Y/N Rogers, Steve's sister, but also my long-lost girlfriend." Sam is still a little confused, but he lets it go to get back to the main thing that is going on.
They get back to the plane with only Steve, Bucky, and Y/N. "I still can't believe your alive," Steve says "How do you think I feel? My brother and boyfriend fighting together again 100 years later." Since her last brainwashing, Y/N hadn't seen James, which meant she wouldn't remember a lot until they met. Y/N had also forgotten that Steve didn't know that they were dating. Steve in a calming voice asks, "So you guys are dating?" Steve continues, "let me guess since you were about 20." Y/N and James look shocked as Steve keeps talking, "I'm your older brother. I know who you like even if you think I don't. It looks like we have a lot to catch up on. Good thing we have a couple of hours till we reach our destination."

chapter thirteen - “sober desires & the reminiscence of a winsome smile”
delicate masterlist
word count: 4k
synopsis: wakanda gets a visit from our favorite captain, two drinks is too much rum for a reticent psychologist, and bucky knows (& feels) more than meets the eye.
pairings: bucky x fem!reader
[A/N]: this took so long to write but WHEW this chapter!!!! pls let me know what you think >:D
Tumblr media
The knock on the outside of his hut was followed by a deep accented voice, one that he had heard before.
"Sergeant Barnes?" it called.
Quickly enough Bucky was outside, facing the king of Wakanda himself. He wasn't sure exactly what to say. You see, the majority of their past interactions included the Black Panther trying to kill him. T'Challa was kind and Bucky trusted him. It was just... a little awkward given the history.
"Your highness," he greeted.
He smiled bashfully at the title.
"I have some news for you."
Bucky's head cocked to the side, curious. News? Should he be worried? He hadn't been expecting anything.
"Captain Rogers is on his way here. He was alerted about our recent complication with N'Jadaka," he said, referring to who Bucky guessed was who Y/N called Erik Killmonger, "and he asked to come check in, make sure you're okay."
Steve was coming. His mood was immediately uplifted. He hadn't seen his oldest friend for months. It was weird to have Steve feeling the need to make sure Bucky was okay; it was usually the other way around. Nonetheless, he was excited. And he had the sudden urge to tell Y/N.

READER
"Sharon. Hey," she said into the phone.
The friends hadn't spoken since Y/N left for Wakanda - security measures since Sharon helped Steve and betrayed the... well everyone.
"Y/N!" Sharon greeted. "How is everything? Are you alright?"
"Yeah, no I'm totally okay. The Killmonger thing was more the royal family's deal than mine. I was just hiding out in some bunker with Barnes."
Concerned weaved its way into Sharon's voice. "Oh my god. Did anything happen?"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, historically, stress hasn't affected him well..."
She wasn't sure why she almost got offended. "No... he was completely fine. He doesn't lose control out of nowhere and turn into the winter soldier. It's a lot more complicated than that... We were fine."
"Oh, that's good. Listen... I'm actually on my way to Wakanda right now."
"You're-... what?"
"Steve needed to check in on Bucky after Killmonger. Wilson and I are coming too."
They must all be together. It makes sense considering what happened after the disaster in Berlin, and then the airport fiasco in Germany and then... everything in Siberia.
Aw, they're in hiding together, Y/N joked in her head. She almost laughed out loud.
"Oh. Is that safe? For you? For everyone?"
"I've been careful. We've all been careful. But, things don't always go as planned. And T'Challa feels bad about putting you guys in a dangerous situation when he was supposed to protect you."
"It wasn't his fault."
"I know. We all know. But, it's kind of his way of making up for it: letting us stay so that Steve can check in on Barnes and we can cool off for a bit."
"Was Rogers mad?"
"Well, he wasn't thrilled that his best friend was trapped alone in a country that just got taken over..."
He wasn't alone.
"...he was mostly worried," Sharon continued. "Still is."
"Right."
"Alright, well I got to go. We'll be there in a couple hours."
"I'll see you. Be safe."
"See you."

BUCKY BARNES
"Hey Buck," the happiness in Steve's voice was genuine as he patted his oldest friend on the back in the middle of an embrace. "How you been?"
"A hell of a lot better than the last time I saw you, that's for damn sure," Bucky smiled.
Sam Wilson stood next to the star spangled man with a plan. Bucky briefly glanced at him.
"Wilson," he deadpanned.
"Barnes," he returned the greeting.
"I was worried when T'Challa told me about Killmonger," Steve said. "Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful that they let you stay here, but I just didn't think I'd have to be worried so soon."
"It's alright. Everything turned out okay and I was fine the whole time. You don't have to lose your head."
"I'm not losing my head."
"You never had it in the first place."
The blonde changed the topic of conversation.
"You were with that therapist right?"
"Yeah."
"What do we think about her?" he asked with equal parts caution and suspicion. "Do you trust her?"
Bucky wasn't sure why he was almost offended.
"Of course. Why wouldn't I?"
"Well, you know what happened the last time you were with a psychiatrist..."
"Yeah well, this one doesn't have a personal vendetta against the Avengers."
"You sure she's alright?"
He looked serious, and Bucky could see the genuine concern etched into his friend's face. Steve was truly wary.
"I'm positive. She's helped so much since I've been here. I really trust her."
"Okay, if you say so. I trust you."
Bucky smirked. "Hey uh... is Sharon with you?"
Sam said nothing but radiated a smirk to match Bucky's perfectly, a kind of smirk that only a ball-busting best friend cracks.
"She is..." Steve replied. "Why do you ask?"
"Oh nothing. Just wondering, that's all."
"She said she wanted to talk to a friend."
"Oh, she's probably with Y/N."
"Who?"
"Y/N. Dr. Y/L/N. 'The therapist.'"
"I didn't know they were friends."
"Why do you think Sharon recommended her?"
"She said she knew 'the best' person to help."
"That true. She's crazy smart."
"As long as she can do the job, I'm all for it, no matter whose friend she is."
In a short-lived thought, Bucky wondered what Steve Rogers would think of who else Y/N was friends with. He wondered if Steve would think it was strange to be friends with your doctor, or if he'd be pleased that Bucky had gotten close to someone, anyone else in this world.
"How long are you guys staying for?" Bucky asked.
Steve rubbed the back of his neck anxiously. "Honestly, we were only planning on staying for like a week or so. We've been moving throughout Europe, and the other day, when we were in Prague... it was almost really bad."
"We need to stay low for a while," Sam added.
"What did you do?" Bucky asked, used to Steve getting himself into trouble.
"It's a long story..."
"What did T'Challa say about it?"
"He said to take as much time as we needed," Steve filled him in.
"You know, I'm startin' to really like this guy," Sam nodded, smiling. "Obviously when he went all cat murderer on you, he was a bit of a pain in the ass. But now? Guardian angel."
Bucky shook his head at Sam's nonsense. What an idiot, he thought. He wondered what Y/N would think of Sam, but then a more pressing question popped into his head.
"Where are you guys gonna stay?"
"I'm guessing there," Steve said pointing behind Bucky.
When he turned around, Bucky was shocked but he also wasn't. Behind and around his hut stood three more just like it, but slightly smaller. He could've sworn those weren't there yesterday, but that's the beauty of Wakanda. They were ten steps ahead of the rest of the world and he guessed that included speed building as well.
"I will never stop loving this place," he admired.
-
He tried not to sound too eager when he knocked on her door. She looked shocked but didn't really try to hide it.
"Oh," she sounded confused. "Hi, Bucky..."
"Hey," he grinned. "I have a proposition for you."
Her eyebrows lowered as her lips twisted into the most devilish smirk. She could communicate an entire joke with just her face.
"Not like that!" he exclaimed.
She laughed, smirk morphing into an endearing smile. "Like what then?"
"Steve wanted to have like a bonfire sorta thing to catch up since we're all together for once. You know, just like drinks and stupid stories from the forties. D'ya think you could part with your paper work to grace us with your presence?"
"Oh, uh... are you sure?"
"Of course. I'd love to have you there."
She wrung out her hands. "I don't know, Buck. Is that really appropriate? To have your doctor hangin' out with your friends?"
"That may be, but that's not what I'm asking. I want my friend to 'hang out' with my other friends."
Out of her composure seeped a meek smile. The air felt softer to him.
"And maybe you can analyze Wilson and tell me what his biggest fear is later," he added.
She snickered.
"Okay. Lead the way, James Buchanan."
-
The fire was a monster, roaring and crackling with all the life in the world. Bucky loved it. He loved the warmth, the heat, the lack of cold.
"I'm gonna get another drink," Y/N said. "You want anything, Buck?"
"I'm all set," he smiled, gaze lingering for only a second too long.
"Sharon?" she turned. "You?"
The blonde shook her head. "Oh, I think I've had plenty."
Surrounding the fire sat five chairs. All but one was empty as Y/N went to get her second drink. Of course they were in Sam's hut, Bucky thought. After all, even though it was Steve's idea, Sam was most excited about the whole thing, actually sitting down and just relaxing instead of fleeing from belligerent governments.
"Therapist's pretty," Sam noted with a smirk once she was out of hearing range.
"Y/N," Bucky corrected, mind going completely elsewhere. "She's so smart."
"Smart enough to call you Buck..." Steve said, catching on to Sam.
"What?"
"She calls you Buck."
"Yeah, so? You do too."
"Yeah, but I've known you longer. And I'm your friend."
"She's my friend too," he shrugged.
"She's your doctor..."
"And I'm a hundred year old man with one arm trying to get un-brainwashed in a country that the rest of the world doesn't even know exists. None of this is conventional."
"...fair," Steve said, with only a little bit of skepticism. "Are you guys close?"
Does spending hours alone talking with someone in a hidden bunker make you close? Does them comforting you after a nightmare and then subsequently allowing you to get the best night sleep you've had in forever? What about making daring voyages to quaint waterfalls and laughing a kind of laugh that makes your heart swell? What about-
"Buck?"
He shrugged. Again. "I guess so."
Sam narrowed his eyebrows. "How close?"
"Wilson," Sharon admonished exasperatedly. "Y/L/N's his doctor, come on. That's inappropriate to suggest."
Sam put his hands up in mock surrender. Briefly, just briefly, Bucky imagined kicking the leg of Sam's chair and watching him fall back. He didn't, obviously. But it would have been funny if he did.
The seemingly never ending conversation was cut short when Y/N returned, drink in hand, and took her seat next to Bucky.
"What'd you get?" he asked, demeanor subtly but swiftly changing into something lighter, something happier.
"I don't know, but it has rum in it," she shrugged sardonically before clinking her glass with Bucky's.
"Cheers," Sam raised his glass, trying to engage.
Y/N wordlessly, and with a half-smile, raised her glass in his direction.
"So," Steve started, comfortably crossing his legs and leaning back into his chair before asking Bucky, "you wanna know what actually happened in Prague?"
"Do enlighten me. I've been waiting all night."
"Jerk."
"Punk."
The rest of the night went on sort of like this. The group took turns telling stories and then listening. Cracking jokes and then laughing. Everyone but Y/N, Bucky noticed. She just... sat and drank, livelihood only extending to the borders of her seat.
He hadn't seen her like this before, and he found himself stuck halfway between confused and worried. Had something happened? Had something wrong been said?
He kept an eye on her as dusk melted into night. He told himself it was because he was concerned, but that was only in addition to the way he was magnetized to how she looked with the light of the fire gleaming on her skin.
After she would finish a drink, she'd stare into the fire for a little while, before leaving to get another. When he made sure no one was looking at him, he'd look at her. Discretely. At her eyes. The reflection of the fire in her pupils made him wonder if she would burn the fire before it could ever burn her. He was all too aware of the heat that accompanied her gaze. It was a ravishing burn that made him ache for the searing feeling as soon as it was taken away.
He didn't dare think of it for too long or else he would get distracted. And someone would call his name, pulling him out of a trance he didn't want to be caught in. A trance he wasn't sure he wanted to admit that he was in.
The night remained as such until someone - he couldn't remember who - said they were tired, and everyone bid their farewells, and wished their good nights.
Y/N spared about a side hug to Sharon before walking off on her own. Bucky half volunteered, half insisted on tending to the fire to make sure it went out, only to ignore it as soon as everyone was gone and follow after his psychologist.
He caught up to her as she was in the middle of opening the door to her living quarters.
"Y/N."
She turned around in the spot, door wide open, staring up at him.
He bore into her eyes, looking at something, noticing her dilated pupils and hazy stare.
"You're drunk," he said, but it sounded more like a question.
"Yeah."
"But you don't seem drunk?"
"I'm not wasted," she padded into the room, carelessly leaving the door wide open for him to walk through. "Just drunk enough to remember why I didn't drink in college."
She rubbed her eyes.
"Think I want another one," she sighed, heading for the door with a bitter smile. "More rum."
Bucky gently closed the door, maneuvering himself in front of it, and blocking her from exiting. Another drink is definitely not a good idea.
He changed the subject. "Why didn't you drink in college?"
Her eyebrows raised, introducing a look that said Really? You think I don't know what you're doing?
"Wow, look at you being the voice of reason for my otherwise inebriated brain."
Nevertheless, she cooperated.
She sighed. "It just... makes me miserable. I'm a sad drunk."
"Better than a mean drunk," he offered.
"Possibly. It's a real mood killer, though."
"That why you were off all night?"
"Off... ? I don't know, I guess so... I'm usually pretty inconspicuous when I'm drunk. Didn't think anyone would really notice."
There was no hesitation when he spoke.
"I did."
"I'm sorry..."
"Don't be sorry. Just... why did you keep drinking if it only makes you miserable?"
"Alcohol is a depressant," she breathed mechanically, as if speaking was difficult. "It depresses your nervous system, then you get disinhibited. Then you don't care about rationality and just drink! Then in the moment it feels kinda good... but then it makes you sad... and then you need more to blur the feeling away. It's like... the worse you feel, the more you need to drink... but then the more you drink... the worse you feel..."
"How are you drunk but still talking... sorta still like you usually do?"
She smirked, looking like she was trying not to laugh. He was glad she was smiling.
"Maybe you're not the only one with heightened metabolism as a result of the serum..."
He looked at her quizzically, amused. She wasn't making total sense, but he couldn't find it in himself to give much of a damn. She smiled, again.
"Kidding. I just have outstanding self-control."
She plopped down on the floor, deciding that she no longer wanted to use her legs. Fine motor function was overrated for intoxicated people.
He sat down with her, next to her.
"If I tell you a joke will you be less sad-drunk?"
"I already am 'less sad-drunk.' I wasn't before, but," she took a breath in, "now you're here, so... improvements have been made."
"That's good 'cause I was worried before."
She glanced up at him with brazen eye contact. Her face held a mixture of what looked like a confused and pained expression, as something changed. Some sort of realization or reality check.
She wiped her hands over her face. "God, this is so ridiculous. I'm sorry. You shouldn't be worried about me, that's not your job. I'm sorry. I should just go to bed, and you can leave..."
"I know it's not my job. I just wanted to make sure you were alright."
"I was alright- it... it's not like I was crying at the fire or something. I was fine."
"After your second drink, you were silent almost the entire time."
"You were counting my drinks?"
Not exactly.
"I was paying attention."
"To what?"
To you.
"You completely turned into yourself. Your elbows and legs were drawn in close to your body: unrelaxed and almost apprehensive posture. You were nonverbal, didn't make any jokes, no sarcastic commentary. I was literally purposefully saying things I knew you would correct or tease or laugh at and nothing. I was waiting for a 'smartass' or a 'there's a reason behind everything' explanation or anything science related. But there was nothing."
Her face was blank. It took her a second to catch up. Blinking slowly, she shook her head, eyebrows furrowed, all emphasis on the word. "Why?"
Her tone was truly confused. It was like she, in her heart of hearts, for the life of her, could not believe he was concerned.
"Y/N you're my friend," he chided. "Why wouldn't I be?"
She averted her gaze. Her voice was barely above a whisper. "I don't know."
"Look," his voice was soft. "I know you know everything and you know my mannerisms and micro-expressions and you know when I'm lying and whatever else 'cause you're a genius psychologist. But is it really that hard to believe that, after all the time we've known each other, I know you a little too? That I saw you for once instead of you always seein' me?"
"I think you're the only person who sees me."
The words leaked out before he thought to analyze them, tone lower than a whisper.
"Well I can't seem to look at much else."
He had never felt such potent silence. Did he just fuck up majorly? They just sat, on the floor, eyes glued to each other like twenty year old dried cement. He didn't think he could move away if he tried.
"I see you now," she whispered.
"What do you mean?"
"Blue," she breathed. "Your eyes are so blue. I don't... think I've ever seen that shade of blue."
It happened exponentially slowly, but the closer her face got to his, the more his chest felt like it was going to burst in the best way possible. As if liquid light poured into his lungs, inflating his chest and igniting every nerve with adoration.
Her lips hovered over his so lightly it was as if it wasn't even happening, like her affection was a ghost. But it was happening, and he could feel it. He could feel the softness in her lips and the smell of the rum she drank as they combined into the wondrous dual sensation that permeated throughout his brain.
They weren't kissing by any stretch. Their lips were hardly touching. However, in that moment, he was at her mercy. He was prepared to bend the laws of nature to her will if she would allow the continuation of this feeling for even a fraction of a second more.
Until it stopped and she waned away like the moon bidding adieu to the morning sky.
Her voice shook. "I'm so sorry."
"Don't... it's-"
"No. It's not okay. It's not okay."
He leaned back, examining her face. She looked confused and embarrassed and scared.
"Y/N, it's fine. It's okay, seriously, don't worry about it."
"I'm sorry, I'm... I'm drunk and I'm disinhibited and it's affecting my judgement and making me impulsive. I'm sorry."
He couldn't be exactly sure, but it sounded as if she was trying to convince herself more than she was trying to convince him.
Neither of them moved a muscle.
"Do you want me to leave?" he asked.
She was silent, frozen. It reminded him of a past conversation about the fight or flight response.
Bucky stood up and offered his hand to the woman sitting on the floor in front of him. "Here."
She took it gingerly and stood up with him before wide eyes stared into his apologetically.
"Please don't feel bad," he pleaded. "Barely anything happened."
"Still..."
"Why don't you just get some sleep and we can talk tomorrow. I promise it won't seem like such a big deal when you're sober."
She nodded but they both remained motionless, hands still together. He knew they needed to let go, but her hand didn't move, and she just kept looking into him.
"Okay," she whispered.
She walked him to the door, hand still in hand, and until he was forced to let go of her to open it. He stepped, ever so slowly, out of her room and onto the grass outside. He looked up at her, the doorway between them suddenly feeling like worlds of distance. They stood on opposite sides of the open door like statues. Bucky didn't know what to do and he wasn't sure what to say.
He settled on a, "Goodnight."
He tried not to make it sound so weak and timorous but he failed entirely. He didn't want to leave her like this. Guilty and alone. God knows he knew what it felt like.
Her voice was dry and quiet. "Goodnight."
He wasn't sure when the door shut or which one of them had shut it. The only thing he was sure of was the feeling of formidable regret pooling in his stomach.
On one hand, there was regret for letting her lean in and get so close because now he was scared that their dynamic was ruined and worried that Y/N felt awful. On the other hand, there was regret that he just let her pull away. Regret that he didn't lean in more and shamelessly drown in her. Regret that he didn't unapologetically suffocate himself with the softness of lips, the inebriating smell of rum on on her tongue, and the utterly bewitching taste of her he was sure would follow.
He wasn't sure what he felt, to be honest. He was a muddle of emotions of which he had no idea how to sift through. Momentarily, he wished he was drunk so he wouldn't have to think so hard. Then, he remembered the saying, "drunk words are sober thoughts," and he was damn glad he was stone cold sober; he could only imagine the things he would say to her if he was drunk.
This lead him to pondering, it got the gears in his brain turning. It made him wonder. Maybe... just maybe... if drunk words were sober thoughts, then what if drunk actions were sober desires?
Thinking like this could cause him read the situation completely differently. Thinking like this could make him read the situation in such a way that conceived the slightest sliver of hope for emotions gone repressed. Hope is dangerous...
Hope is dangerous, so Bucky shoved it down into the deepest cavern of his brain, the very same cavern where his feelings for her resided. It was a monster in a cave, growling and hissing menacingly. Intensely.
It scared him, this intensity. It scared him so much that the only way he could fall asleep was by thinking about the way James Buchanan sounded when she said it with a winsome smile.

In Another Life
Bucky Barnes x reader ° part ten
Summary: Waiting 88 years to find your soulmate? It was cruel. But it was a cruel fate Bucky would have to face whether he accepted it or not. Bucky was a tortured man all his life and he wasn't even granted the solace of having his soulmate at his side. All he had was the promise of one in another life. They were separated by two different times.
But the pain in their lives were connected.
Y/n had been alone ever since she could remember. All she could depend on was the soulmate that was destined to be at her side. Yet when the snap occurred she lost him.
And Bucky never got to meet her.
Tumblr media
Though Steve showed no signs of leaving or the anger Y/n had feared, she still felt the anxiety that came from revealing her true past. He was supportive, as he always was and so was everyone else once they were told. Tony only had a mere, 'I knew it' to add to the subject and while Y/n was touched, she couldn't help the array of things she felt.
Foolish was one of them. Hiding her past from them before was stupid but Steve insisted that her going underground was probably best since HYDRA would've searched for her. While that brought her some solace she was still uncomfortable with the idea of becoming more involved. Something always went wrong and Nat was proof.
She missed her friend badly and Y/n couldn't help but feel it was her own cursed luck that had taken Nat. It was ridiculous to think that she could ever be happy. Stupid to think she could help her friends bring back everyone. Stupid to think she might actually meet her soulmate.
"Hey, kid. We're going to put the stones together." Tony cut into Y/n's racing thoughts. Her gaze lifted from the drawing Steve had given her, settling on Tony as he leaned in through the doorway.
She didn't know why she was still looking at the picture or why she had even accepted it. She wanted to believe she was still furious, still resentful. Wanted to force all the pain and guilt she felt into him once more. But in all reality she was just so lost. For years she pretended to be someone else and now that she was free to be the girl she once was, she didn't even remember who that was.
A genius? A hero? A terrified little orphan? She had no idea but she didn't want to be any. She wanted to be Y/n, a friend and a psychiatrist. She now understood why Steve wanted her around. He needed someone to remind him of who he was, who he truly was.
Was James that person once?
Was that why she found herself gazing at the sketch, hoping for a split second that maybe she could go back to the moment that was drawn? Praying to go back to a time where James Barnes was fighting for his past and his own will. A time where he might comfort her like he did Steve over the death of Nat. A time where his thoughts were his own and so we're his actions.
Y/m almost hated herself for despising him. Though she knew there was still much to his story she was too scared to ask, she knew he was nothing more than a tortured soul with a gun. She couldn't figure out how the man in the drawing was the same man who'd nearly killed her.
It wasn't.
Noticing her broken expression, Tony hesitantly stepped into the room coming to sit with her. Her fingers gently held the page and he looked down at it, recognizing the face instantly. It sent a chill through his spine, seeing the same face almost ripped the arc reactor straight from his chest.
It had taken him years to forgive Steve but he still struggled to do the same with the man who murdered his parents in cold blood. All the hatred toward his parents' assassin had gone unresolved since Steve and Bucky left him at that frozen HYDRA base. And once forgiving Steve, Tony had no other outlet and he found it difficult to sit there with the picture.
So he tried to focus on something else.
"So, you and Ms. Romanoff were close?" He mumbled trying poorly to begin consoling her. She nodded numbly, folding the paper and setting it aside.
The emotions she felt were mixed and intense making it hard for her to filter through her feelings but one surfaced more than others. Guilt.
"Ever since the snap." She replied, her shoulders slack. Tony and Nat had their own relationship, one much older than her own but they'd been apart for so long. Ever since Nat went off the grid with Steve and even after the snap when he distanced himself from all of them, they hardly interacted. But they were friends. The type of friends that wouldn't be parted even by death.
"Do you think things would be different if I hadn't showed up?" Y/n asked him suddenly. He looked over at her studying her guilt ridden eyes that she kept trained on the floor. It was a familiar look, one he wore often. But not one he wanted her to.
"Natasha wasn't the type of person to let anyone dictate her choices. I think she was ready to give her life for a cause and none of us could've stopped her." Tony sighed, the weight of her death finally reaching its max. "Not even a couple of geniuses."
•••
"Let's hope this doesn't blow up." Tony mumbled next to her. The small group consisting of them with the addition of Bruce and Rocket stood in the lab, waiting in anticipation as Tony carefully placed the stones in the gauntlet. With his shaking hands it was difficult to be precise while he manipulated the machine but he managed to place all six stones in their respective places. They held their breath unsure if the stones would react or blow up the lab as Tony feared.
"Boom!" Rocket yelled suddenly making all of them flinch. He began to laugh loudly and they all turned to him with annoyed looks. Y/n slapped the back of his head, cutting his laughing short as she walked off trying to ignore the trembling in her legs. Tony muttered something under his breath moving to bring the gauntlet to a more accessible area for the wearer.
"You're an asshole." Y/n groaned. Tony walked past them, putting the gauntlet on a display table that made it hover a couple inches above.
"Come on, it was funny!" Rocket argued, earning an unamused stare from both Tony and Y/n.
It took a few minutes for Bruce to collect everyone but eventually everyone was gathered around the gauntlet. Most had expressions Y/n familiarized with PTSD and once following their gazes she realized their experience with the gauntlet Thanos wore was resurfacing.
Hopefully, with the new one they'd be able to reverse what he'd done. But the trauma would stay. That she knew.
"All right. The glove's ready. Question is, who's gonna snap their fucking fingers?" Rocket questioned, looking up at the group. Their options were limited since most people in the room were only human, even Steve.
"I'll do it." Thor volunteered without hesitation. He drunkenly stepped forward making everyone turn to him with confused and reluctant looks. Their choices were limited but they weren't desperate enough to put such a powerful object on a drunk god.
"Excuse me?" Scott asked, glancing around at the others for one of them to tell Thor what a bad idea it was.
"It's okay." Thor insisted, marching forward with a purpose. Steve moved to stop him with the help of Tony making the poor large man pause.
"No, no, no, whoa. Stop. Stop. Wait a sec. Hey, hey–" Everyone was a mess of refusal and Thor's face turned hurt as he tried to continue.
"Wait, wait, Thor, just wait. We haven't decided who's gonna put that on yet." Steve explained. Thor shifted on his feet, clearly upset with their rejection.
"I'm sorry. What, we're just sitting around waiting for the right opportunity?" He asked,
annoyed. Scott looked to Y/n hoping she might use some of her 'therapist powers' he called them after realizing she really couldn't read minds.
"We should at least discuss it." Y/n tried to reason. Thor shook his head stubbornly, swaying unsteadily on his feet.
"No, no, sitting here staring at that thing is not gonna bring everybody back. I'm the strongest Avenger, okay? So this responsibility falls upon me. It's my duty." He told them, gesturing to the gauntlet then himself.
"It's not about that–" Tony told him gently, coming to stand in front of him as he started to move Thor back. Thor resisted but was unsuccessful as he started to grow emotional. "Hey buddy-" Tony tried again only to be cut short by Thor frantically shushing him and everyone else.
"Stop it! Just let me! Just let me do it. Just let me do something good. Something right." Thor begged, tears filling his eyes. He was desperate to prove he was worthy, to prove he could still be the hero he once was.
"Look– It's not just the fact that that glove is channeling enough energy to light up a continent, I'm telling you, you're in no condition." Tony fought. There was no way they were going to let him hold the fate of the world in his hand while he was drunk. Even the Thor he was years ago shouldn't have held that kind of power, it was too risky.
"What do you– What do you think is coursing through my veins right now?" Thor asked, his eyes studying Tony's for any kind of hope that might tell him they would let him make the sacrifice.
"Cheez Whiz?" Rhodey scoffed, earning a glare from Y/n. Thor looked over at Rhodey pointing a shaky finger at him as he tried not to cry in frustration. He held onto Tony, grasping at his shoulders and prying Tony's attention away from Rhodey's comment.
"Lightning." Thor corrected, looking back to Tony with pleading eyes. Tony nodded but he knew he couldn't allow Thor to wear the gauntlet. "Lightning." Thor repeated, distraught but Tony's reaction.
"Lightning won't help you, pal. It's gotta be me." Bruce announced suddenly. Thor shook his head letting go of Tony. "You saw what those stones did to Thanos. It almost killed him. None of you could survive." Bruce explained.
"How do we know you will?" Steve questioned as Bruce paced over to the gauntlet.
"We don't. But the radiation's mostly gamma. It's like...I was made for this." Bruce mumbled. He gazed intensely at the stones, silently calculating his odds. If the Hulk couldn't handle this, was this really how he was going to die? And if so would it even work?
They looked at each other knowing it was their best chance at bringing them back. They had to take it.
Tony stepped forward, grabbing the gauntlet and handing it to Bruce as they headed to a more secure part of the lab.
"Are you sure you wanna do this?" Y/n asked Bruce quietly. She knew how Nat's death had affected him and she refused to make the same mistake with him.
"Yes. We have to finish this." He declared. Y/n watched as he paced forward to catch up with Tony as she lagged behind to Steve.
"Do you think this will work?" Steve questioned. Y/n chewed her lip anxiously, focusing her stare at the gauntlet as Steve came to stand beside her.
"Bruce's gamma radiation is stronger and most equipped to handle the energy but it's still dangerous. The stones are too powerful together, I didn't think they were ever really meant to be used together." She sighed, hating the sacrifices that came with saving the world. If they lost someone else just for this to not work was it really even worth trying?
"Bruce is strong." Steve tried to ease her worry but it wasn't enough.
"I know. I just-I can't keep losing people, Steve. It's like a curse. Every time I try to do something good…-"
"Hey, hey, it's okay. You're not gonna lose anyone else. Not on my watch." Steve promised but both of them knew it was practically empty. There was no guarantee. "Let's just bring everyone back."
Y/n tried to smile but like his promise it was hollow. "Yeah, okay."
"Good to go, yeah?" Tony questioned as Bruce carefully held the piece in his large hands. He seemed anxious but who wouldn't be in that situation.
"Let's do it." He confirmed as Y/n and Steve returned to the group. She walked around him, stopping beside Tony and sharing a steady nod.
"You remember–everyone Thanos snapped away five years ago, you're just bringing them back to now, today. Don't change anything from the last five years." Tony told him seriously.
"Got it." Bruce assured. Then suddenly the room grew quiet and a tenseness settled in the air that Y/n was too amazed to catch onto. For the first time she realized she was living the dream of millions of people. Everyone had readied themselves and Y/n watched as they stood there in their superhero uniforms, the power and determination they all had washing over her.
Tony pressed his chest allowing his suit to expand and morph to his body, a shield lighting up before him. His stare then drifted to Y/n who still stood there in her casual clothes, watching them all confused and out of place. Why were they getting ready now? They were doing this here?
"Hey, kiddo. Come on." Tony urged, motioning to her earpiece. She gave a soft 'oh' mimicking him as she pressed the button making her own suit appear. A shield of her own design came to her forearm and Tony eyed it curiously.
"Did you mess with the suit?" He asked, the seriousness in his tone startling her a bit. She shrugged, looking at him defensively.
"Yeah, you said it was just a prototype so I fixed it a bit." She explained. He looked away, grateful she couldn't see the entertained smirk on his lips as he turned back to Bruce.
"F.R.I.D.A.Y., do me a favor and activate Barn Door Protocol. Will you?" Tony called. Y/n had gotten used to the suit during the time she could spare to examine it and she put 70% power into the armor, figuring if something did go wrong it probably wouldn't hurt to be a little more protected.
"Yes, boss." F.R.I.D.A.Y replied. Metal doors began to close off the lab as the compound went into lockdown and if the seriousness of the situation hadn't set in yet it definitely did then as Y/n widened her stance to try and brace herself.
"Everybody comes home." Bruce reminded himself, cautiously reaching his hand into the gauntlet. The gauntlet expanded to fit his hand thanks to Tony's nanotech but as soon as it was fully on the power of the stones surged through him. He grunted in pain collapsing to his knees as the energy began to burn into his arm.
"Take it off! Take it off!" Thor cried, waving his hands as Bruce shakily held the gauntlet. Steve stepped forward, keeping anyone from acting.
"No, wait. Bruce, are you okay?" Steve questioned. He knew more than anyone that just because something was painful didn't mean they couldn't do it.
"Talk to me, Banner." Tony called, becoming more concerned with each unresponsive moment. Y/n started moving to help but froze as Bruce looked up at them.
"I'm okay. I'm okay." He insisted. They eased up a little and everyone watched carefully as he tried to regain control of the stones. Thor gave a double thumbs up, watching the scene before him with an astounded expression.
"F.R.I.D.A.Y what are his vitals?" Y/n questioned anxiously. Charts bloomed around Bruce and she quickly read them realizing his heart rate was dangerously high. In fact everything was high, his blood pressure, his respiration rate, even his body temperature had increased. Bruce screamed again, fighting the instinct to remove the gauntlet from the overwhelming pain it caused him as he lined up his fingers.
The world seemed to stop at the echoing of the snap, the fated sound she'd only heard about for five years finally filling her head the same way it had for the others.
He fainted and the gauntlet fell off his arm, clattering on the floor before Clint quickly kicked it away from him.
"Bruce!" Steve called, kneeling beside him as the others rushed forward to check on him. Y/n tugged the remains of his sleeve back gently as Tony kneeled beside her, holding up his hand.
"Don't move him." Tony demanded, applying a coolant spray from his fingertips over Bruce's arm. Bruce groaned, reaching out and grabbing Steve's arm urgently.
"Did it work?" He questioned breathlessly, keeping his large hand tight around Steve's arm. Thor gave him a reassuring smile while Y/n looked over the damage of his arm.
"We're not sure. It's okay." Thor soothed, his voice hopeful as he turned his gaze toward the door where the lab was starting to open up again. Scott walked off to the now open area and some of the others spread out to see what had happened but Y/n stayed at Bruce's side.
"You did great, Bruce." She told him, giving him a smile to which he returned, though it was a bit more pained. A muted vibrating came from the table on the other side of the room and Y/n turned to see Clint walking over to it almost numb.
Did it work?
"Honey? Honey." Clint spoke, his voice quivering in joy as Y/n looked at Tony. They shared a wide eyed glance, both rattled by the idea that they might have actually won.
Y/n wished to look at her wrist, praying that the countdown she had before the snap returned. She couldn't even remember how many days it had read back then but it didn't matter anymore. She just wanted to meet her soulmate. Would he be looking for her?
Were his eyes really blue?
But their victory couldn't last long and Y/n knew that as she followed Bruce's gaze to the skylight above them. There flying menacingly above the compound was the biggest spacecraft she had ever seen and dread instantly set in upon seeing the missile coming their way.
"Look out!" Y/n screamed, trying to warn the others but it was too late. Her helmet quickly came forward along with her shield which she tried desperately to put over Bruce's head, protecting her and him from falling debris. But the roof wasn't the only thing falling apart.
The floor split and some of the group fell into the large hole while Y/n struggled to regain her balance. She quickly looked around her, catching sight of Steve sliding across the floor toward the hole. Using the thrusters, she launched forward, grabbing hold of one of the straps to his uniform and dragging him back toward Tony.
The building was falling down around them and any means of escape were closing off faster than she could find them. Steve managed to climb to his feet again but before either of them could come up with a plan a large piece of the roof fell, striking Y/n down. She cried out falling through the floor to the room below, getting pinned on her stomach under the roofing.
"Y/n!" Steve yelled, peering down into the hole. Y/n gasped, the impact knocking the wind out of her. Tony looked down too, the two men struggling to keep themselves up as they waited anxiously for her to speak.
"Minimal damage to prototype armor." F.R.I.D.A.Y announced making Y/n groan. She slowly lifted herself up using her back to push off the rumble before leaning back on her knees, panting slightly.
"You call that minimal?" She questioned, annoyed. Tony chuckled through the headset, her reply giving him a little relief knowing she was alright.
"The suits can handle more than we can, kid." He explained. Y/n grumbled, climbing to her feet. She didn't care how durable the suit was, she was still very much human inside the metal and every hit the suit felt, she did too.
"Are you okay?" Steve called, leaning closer to the edge of the hole. Tony put a hand on his chest, keeping him from falling in while Y/n slowly climbed to her feet.
"Yeah. I'm fine, Steve." She waved her hand pretending to be nonchalant before coughing from how forcefully her lungs had been emptied. They were about to attempt to go down to her when the floor they were on shifted and Steve fell over, sliding off to another part in the lab.
"Cap!" Tony called, trying to reach out and catch him. Steve called back that he would be alright giving Tony a little assurance as he turned his gaze back to Y/n. "This building is falling apart!" He called down to her.
"What do you want me to do?" She asked, looking around at the floor around her. She had landed in the living room area, one of her favorite places but like the rest of the facility it was falling to ruin.
"Find the stones. We can't risk losing them." Tony instructed. Y/n let out a short sigh, the weight of the task making her stomach turn.
"Is it too late to go home?" She joked. Tony smiled softly unbeknownst to Y/n. The building shook again with another hit and he knew he wouldn't have long to talk to her.
"No." He answered truthfully. If she could find a way out, there would be nothing stopping her. She could easily fly away and forget about this. "But you know what they say. It only takes one fight to make a hero." Tony explained.
Y/n pierced her lips, knowing that she never really intended on leaving. She was all in from the moment Scott had been yelling into the camera and though she'd been doubtful before, she knew this was where she was meant to be.
"Go be Iron Star." Tony chuckled, making her scoff and shake her head. Of course, he had to ruin the moment.
"We really gotta talk about that name!" She called, turning away and running off toward the window to her left. Using the thrusters in the metallic boots she flew forward and smashed through the glass, unsteadily keeping herself in the air outside.
"Just find the stones."
•••
When Bucky had woken up he was right where he'd been in Wakanda. T'Challa ran to him trying very hastily to explain what had happened. They had been gone for five years according to the wizard man they called 'Strange' and now they needed to come fight Thanos again.
While Bucky was usually quick to understand and move on to the next fight, he couldn't help but stop at this news. He'd promised himself that the fight with Thanos was the last time so that he could find his soulmate but he was still fighting. When would it stop?
For a split second he feared maybe his chance at meeting his soulmate had come and gone and he frantically ripped back his right sleeve to look at his wrist.
"3 days?" Sam asked, peeking down at Bucky's arm as T'Challa organized his army. Bucky numbly nodded, his heart racing as he watched the seconds tick away. He was three days away from her.
He had to make it through this time.
No matter what.
•••
"F.R.I.D.A.Y, can you scan the compound for the stones' energy signature?" Y/n questioned, looking over the wreckage of what was once the Avengers compound. It didn't even look the same, all blown to the foundation with rubble spread around like a battlefield.
"I detect energy levels matching the stones underneath the building in the sewer systems. You should have access through what's left of the first floor." The A.I. answered. Y/n flew over to the nearest opening of the building, using micro lasers to burn a hole into the floor leading down into the sewers.
She jumped down into it, landing as quietly as possible before looking around. It was hard to see much, the only light being the blaring red light of the alarm system but the tunnel appeared empty other than the obvious debris and flooding. She cautiously walked forward watching as her display outlined the surrounding area.
It was eerily silent, the soft trickling of water putting her on edge as she continued down the tunnel, following the power signature of the stones.
"I detect hostiles approaching." F.R.I.D.A.Y spoke suddenly. Y/n watched carefully as her display changed, showing a clearer picture using an x-ray of the surroundings. The stones rapidly approached as did the hostiles and she quickly held up her hands, powering up the repulsors as Clint ran into her vision.
"Shoot 'em!" Clint screamed, narrowly dodging one of the creatures that lined the tunnel. Y/n did what he said, firing at the closest creature before moving onto the next, trying to hold them off long enough for Clint to run past her.
"What the hell are these things?!" She yelled, following after him as they both broke off into a sprint through the water.
"I don't know but I'm tired of this alien shit!" Clint shouted over his shoulder as Y/n glanced back at the creatures, firing again at one that got too close. Clint pulled out one of his arrows, throwing it into one of the pipes next to them before running faster.
Catching onto what he was doing, she picked up speed as well, jumping with him as the arrow exploded taking out most of the creatures. Y/n looked up from the ground, noticing that some of them had started to crawl through the flames making her climb to her feet, grabbing Clint under his arms.
She activated the thrusters and they launched up, faltering a bit since Y/n had barely learned to fly by herself let alone while carrying someone. Clint unsheathed his sword, yelling as he cut through some of the creatures that had climbed up beside them.
Once reaching the top Y/n dropped him to the side before falling herself, tumbling a few feet away. Clint climbed to his knees, holding out his sword as he let out a threatening shout. Thankfully, no other creatures appeared over the edge and he collapsed onto his back next to Y/n.
"Hey." Clint chuckled, nudging Y/n tiredly. "You're an Avenger now." He told her drawing a half-hearted laugh from her. She groaned the pain in her ribs increasing at the action and she put a hand over her side.
"Being an Avenger hurts."
•••
Once going through the portal the wizard had made, Bucky was met with a wasteland. Thanos and Steve watched as others arrived through the portals and while Steve's expression was much more relieved than Thanos', it was clear they were only evening the playing field as Bucky looked toward Thanos' forces.
The Wakandan armies chanted as hundreds of other heroes came through the portals, each ready for the final battle. He walked forward, coming to stand a few feet away from Steve as he studied the enemy across the way. He was determined to finish what they had started five years ago. He wanted to find his soulmate and he wanted this fight to truly be the last.
"Avengers!" Steve called. Bucky held his breath, hoping with everything he had that for all his misfortune over the years, today would end better.
He'd suffered for a lifetime.
Please let this be the last fight.
"Assemble."
Everyone yelled, running forward at Thanos' forces. The fight broke out and Bucky managed to find himself alongside the raccoon he'd encountered last time. They shared brief eye contact and Rocket's eyes flashed with recognition while Bucky tried to ignore him.
"How about now?!" Rocket yelled, motioning to his arm. Bucky glanced over at him, growing annoyed with the talking animal's persistence. What the hell would a raccoon do with his arm?
"No!" Bucky yelled back. He turned, noticing one of the creatures had been sneaking up on Steve while he had his back turned and Bucky quickly shot at it, knocking it down. Steve turned, giving Bucky a grateful and joyous smile. Bucky smiled back making sure to keep aware of the creatures around him.
"What the hell did you get me into, Steve?" Bucky yelled teasingly. His friend gave a short chuckle, using the large hammer to slam back another one of Thanos's creatures.
"Nothing two old men can't handle."

A/N: Hey guys! Thank you for coming back for chapter two! 💖 I am trying to get these out weekly and I don’t see that being an issue. Things are still building and the smut is coming. Hahah If you’re holding out hold out just a smidge longer. 😘

The drive should have been short but Bucky got a bit turned around or at least that's what he claimed, blaming the change in road names from his more formative years. Though you doubted that had truly changed.
"Your dad gets into trouble often?" Bucky's casual tone did little to hide his curiosity. He had always prided himself on being shrouded in mystery but you were just a mystery.
"Not lately but the old man seems to think to make deals with the local gang is better than taking money from his Avenger daughter." You miss Bucky's eyebrows raising, you weren’t kidding on having father issues. “Even if they’ll kill him when he fails to pay back.”
"Too much pride?" You remain silent, "too much guilt then?" You feel a stab in your chest, Bucky was too observant and it was impacting your ability to keep your private life just that, private. You couldn’t find it in yourself to be upset over it, after all, if you trusted anyone to know these parts of you it’s him. However, you weren’t going to be forthcoming.
"Listen Bucky I'm all for team building and such but this isn't a ‘let's get to know the weird father-daughter relationship’ moment." You look out the passenger window making air quotes, the familiar run-down buildings setting you on edge for the second time tonight.
"This is a ‘help your teammate kill a bunch of local thugs from killing her lousy excuse of a father’ moment." When Bucky stops the car he turns his head towards you as you continue.
"And then maybe," you emphasized by pushing your pointer finger in his chest and he had to hold back the smile that would certainly piss you off, "Maybe we can talk about aforementioned fucked up relationship."
"Annoyed always looks good on you," Bucky steps out of the car missing the way you ground your teeth together at his smart ass response. Stepping out of the car you mutter, "I will not kill my teammate, I will not kill my teammate."
"What was that Toots?" Bucky calls out setting Betsy’s barrel upside down on his shoulder.
"Nothing," Bucky smirks, able to hear you clear as day but to miss an opportunity to tease you wasn’t in Bucky.
Rolling the silencer on your handgun you make your way around the corner to the front of a building you had thought left in your past. The double doors had one guy with a bat in his hand guarding. You held back a scoff if they knew you were coming clearly they forgot how you took care of business. Though back then your business was taking care of their issues, not them.
Walking up to the man before he could raise his bat you shot him dead center in the forehead. Bucky whistled as the body slumped to the ground.
Opening the double doors you took out two more mob thugs while Bucky pulls the bat-wielding thug into the building by his metal arm.
“This is gonna get messy huh?” Bucky trusted you wouldn’t kill an innocent or lure him to do the same but he had to express his concerns.
“Anyone in here would shoot you and your family before you could ask for mercy.” Bucky signaled towards the hallway on your right, his hearing picking up the sound of oncoming footsteps.
“You used to do the killing for us.” A short older man pointed a machine gun at you three others behind him. Without a response, you shot him in the chest and then in the head as Bucky’s gun went off three times in a row taking care of the gentlemen’s back up.
You didn’t dare look at Bucky, not wanting to answer the questions he probably had until this was all over.
After plenty of bullets, snapped necks and broken limbs you cracked your knuckles at the "final boss" door. This door was familiar though, you had spent a good portion of your youth protecting the people behind it and fighting their battles for them all at the expense of your humanity just to pay your father's debts.
"I'd rather you stay out here Bucky." He chortled and shook his head in disbelief.
"Not gonna happen." He stepped up next to you bumping his shoulder against yours. You sighed, your shoulders raising at the growing anxiety of what Bucky may hear. Turning your head towards him he looked at you from the corner of his eyes then turns at his waist.
Reaching over with his metal hand he wiped away blood splattered on your cheek once again. If he were being honest with himself he'd tell you he hated seeing that crimson red stain your beautiful face. But he wasn't always good at being honest with himself.
You study his face trying to get a read on him after so much shared carnage. There's a softness in his eyes that's misplaced in a room full of death.
"Just remember I never said I was always a good person." Before Bucky could ask any follow-up questions you kicked the steel-reinforced door in, watching it fall down.
A smile played at the corner of your lip hearing the cry of a man being crushed under the weight of the door and the following crunching coupled with a pain-filled groan as you both stepped on top of the door making your way into the room.
Bucky checked the magazine in Betsy as you survey the remaining five thugs and a weathered senior man sitting at a desk center of the room. His hand resting on a firearm laid on top of the desk. No one appeared to be making the first move.
"Well well." The old man's voice nails on a chalkboard, just like all those years ago. You had to stop yourself from charging at him when he spoke your name with fondness.
"Keep my name out of your mouth!" You command.
"Come on now, you can't be mad at me after everything?" His sun leathered hand patting the handgun still resting on the desk. Your eyes cut to the worn corner where the wood was lighter with indents from your head being slammed against it when you failed as a teenager and young adult.
"After all your father is the one who brought you into this," his other hand waved around the room, "Only fitting this world be the reason for his demise?" You curled your fingers into fists at your side. Bucky glances down with a creased brow, standing up a bit straighter in reaction.
"Whatever he owes, whatever he did isn't worth his life Marco." Marco chuckled. "Either I kill you or you let me pay what he owes, with interest."
Marco stands up slamming both hands on the desk yelling out in Italian, Bucky aims Betsy dead center in Marco’s chest. You catch the movement out of the corner of your eye satisfied at his reflexes. Always nice to have a super-soldier master assassin on your side.
"He is bad man,” his voice thick with broken English with his growing ire “You know better than any.”
“He lives?" Marco raises his hands up as he speaks. "No, no. That's not the code you swore to when you left me." He smiles keeping eye contact. You nod to Bucky and he lowers his gun, confused but trusting you.
"Badman is a dead man, no? Tesoro,” his works eerily soft causing you to flinch, “he deserves to pay for what he made you do."
"What you made me do." You gritted out between clenched teeth. Your hands flexed open and closed along your pant legs.
"A-ah. He brought you to me, a gift, a debt paid. He is just as guilty if not more." His voice was full of the condescension you were much too familiar with. It was like stepping back in time except you knew this old decrepit man held no fear over you and could do nothing in retaliation, nothing long-lasting at least.
"Just think about it, Tesoro.” the nickname rolling off your tongue makes you want to wretch. “I know he is your father but what would your sweet moth-" before he could finish a knife flew from your hand, planting firmly between his eyes. Not missing a moment Bucky fired in quick succession laying waste to remaining thugs in the room before they even knew their boss was dead.
Marco's voice cracks as if still trying to finish the word before going silent and crumpling across the ornate desk chair. Walking up to Marco's corpse you pulled the knife out wiping the blood on his shirt before putting it away.
Pulling out your phone you went to recent and waited for an answer.
"You did it, shithead?" Bucky could hear over the phone, his brow still furrowed. He had to wonder what kind of man was your father? If this was any glimpse, none at all.
"It's done, send the cleanup.” You pause watching the color drain from Macro’s body. “Don't ever call me again." You assert before hanging up still looking at Marco's face. Bucky took a step towards you. He stretches his arm out to place his hand on your shoulder but stilled when you spat in Marco's face.
Bucky caught the small tremors in your hands as you placed your phone back in your pocket. The ragged breath you pulled in left an ache in his chest. He was overwhelmed by the need to hold you in his embrace until you feel safe. Have you ever felt safe?
Even with everything he had done in the war and as a brainwashed HYDRA assassin he could still remember feeling loved and safe. The way his mother would card her fingers through his hair when he couldn't sleep as a child. Or how it felt when his sisters would dogpile on him. He felt safe.
He had to wonder once more did you ever feel safe? He wasn't so sure.
"Fucking hated this place. Let's go!" You extolled, turning around to face Bucky with a haunting smile.
This was different than his beloved murder smile. Whatever this was, he knew it was a front. It reminded him of all those smiles Steve would give him after army rejections. A smile to hide the pain.

The ride back to your car in front of your father’s shop was silent. Which between the two of you wasn't uncharacteristic but there was a newfound tension like static in the air.
What could you share with him that could ease his mind? What parts of you were left to give? Your train of thought was halted as Bucky pulled up next to your parked car.
"See you back at the compound." Bucky's grip on the steering wheel tightened as he spoke. You opened the car door, the smell of the incoming dawn wafting into the small confines of the car. You started to leave the car but paused
"I-uh," Bucky watched you from the corner of his eyes. His fingers relax their hold on the steering wheel waiting for what you had to say. "I have a place not far from here," Bucky raises an eyebrow and you grunted.
"After all that happened tonight, I'd much rather lay in bed than drive all the way upstate." Bucky nodded in agreement.
"I'll see you when you get back then Toots." You sighed, rather dramatically Bucky let out a soft chuckle.
"I'm inviting you to join you, idiot." His eyes narrowed at the name-calling. After tonight he didn't want to hear another disparaging word out of your mouth for a while, if ever. It only reminded him of how you have been treated.
"I'll come with but don't talk to me like you do your father." His tone clipped but you simply smiled back at him as you stepped out of the car texting Bucky the address.
"Thought you wanted to be my Daddy, Barnes?" He didn't miss the coquettish tone and smile but failed to reciprocate.
"From what I can tell that man was no dad." Bucky looked down at his phone surprised how close the address was. "See you there." He finalized and you shut the door making your way to your own vehicle.

When Bucky entered your fifth-floor apartment he wasn't sure what he'd find in a space that was entirely your own. At the compound you kept things pretty minimal, some jewelry on a dresser, clothes organized, a black and white poster of some European city during the day but no real personal effects. Hell outside of a photo Wanda gave you from a team outing there was nothing in your room that showed who it belonged to.
Bucky found it odd at first however if anyone came into his room he wasn't sure there'd be terribly too much to indicate it was his either outside. Maybe the workout bench and weights he kept when he didn't want to be in the gym with others. There was also that vintage New York Dodgers poster you bought for him, similar to the one you got for Steve.
Seeing your apartment, it made sense to him now, you kept yourself here. The living room was full of warm tones, throw blankets that looked dangerously soft, two giant filled bookcases and photos all over the place. Soft lighting encasing the room in comfort.
"It's not much," your voice pulling him from his analysis, "but it's mine." The soft ending in your tone warmed him, it was clear you were trusting him with something no one else had seen.
The pile of mail on the other side of the door you picked up along with dust he could see on the bookcases alluded to it being a place you hadn't seen in a while. Sensing his scrutiny you felt the need to justify yourself.
"I used to stay here more often but the compound is easier for missions," You set the pile of mail on the old writing desk across from a small kitchen. Bucky's eyes caught on a framed photo next to the mail. A young woman is holding a toddler in front of your father's butchery, the building looks newer than it does now and the woman in clothes not of a recent style.
"Who's that?" Bucky looks up to catch you stretching your arms above you with your back facing him. Watching the small of your back slowly be revealed as the shirt rises, he licks his lips rapidly losing interest in the photo. But when you turned around and caught sight of what he was referring to you wrapped your arms around yourself.
"That's me and Mom," you turn back around. Only then does he realize she does look an awful lot like you or was it you looked like her? The stark difference was her face, it appeared softer.
Your face often held hard lines that Bucky wanted to soften with his hands. Your edges so jagged, he longed to cut himself on them. Know you intimately, deeper levels you rarely showed. The times your face would soften the most recently have been over the past few months with him. A small part of him hoping it meant you were opening up to him in ways he could burrow inside and never leave.
Bucky set his duffle back containing Betsy and gear on the floor next to the one you had set down before grabbing the mail.
"Where your ma'?" Bucky trailed his fingers on the desk as he followed behind you slowly. You turn your head and he sees your side profile, the soft lights do little to hide the pain in your eyes.
"Same place as yours." He inhales quickly at your response. "Shower down the way there," you gesture towards a cracked open door. "Bed is that way." You gestured to the hallway opposite of bathroom door and make your way down the same hallway as he heads towards the bathroom. A good scrubbing sounded nice.
When Bucky stepped out of the shower he noticed the dark blue sweatpants and a grey shirt laying on the bathroom counter that were certainly not there before. A soft blush covered his cheeks at the thought of you walking in on him showering. He hadn't been able to stop thinking about you and the past few hours. Had he been so distracted in the shower that he missed you coming in? That wasn’t like him at all.
However, he left his guard down around you more so than he should, at least that’s what Steve had expressed concern over. Bucky shook his head, what did that punk know anyway? He couldn’t even talk to women.
After drying his hair until slightly damp he pulled the sweatpants on. They were almost too snug on him but clearly too big for you. The thought that someone else, a guy particularly, leaving them here caused an unsettling burn in his chest. He knew you weren't his but he'd be lying if he didn't relish the thought of you being so one day. Pushing the burning sensation down he made his way to the hallway you had mentioned he could find a bed.
Finding the first door he came across open he felt his jaw slide open. Your hair was down damp, wearing obscenely short sleep shorts and a tank top that strained against pebbled nipples. Swallowing away the dryness in his throat Bucky looked towards the ceiling before clearing his throat.
"Where's the guest room?" You tilted your head at him in confusion. Turning down the sheets you crawled into the bed.
"What guest room?" Bucky eyes stopped tracing patterns in the ceiling design to look back at you in equal confusion.
"You said a bed was down the hall." Your hand gestured to the bed in reply as you lay on your side. You tried and failed to cover the smile as Bucky became flustered with realization.
"I'll take the couch." You frowned at him and patted the open space next to you.
"Don't be silly, the bed is big enough for both of us," you couldn't help the coquettish smile that pulls on your lips, "Unless you're scared of sleeping next to me."
Bucky swallows the growing lump in his throat. He wasn't scared of you, never had been regardless of some teammates’ concerns. His main concern lay with the ever-growing attraction he felt toward you.
Bucky felt himself caving, the last time the two of you shared a bed it was after rather traumatic night terror this was different. This wasn’t comfort-based.
"I won't bite you Bucky," bending your arm and resting the side of your head on the palm of your hand, you watch with growing interest at what the super soldier will do.
Laying down next to you Bucky folds his arms under his head and turns his head towards you with that beautiful smile that took your breath away more often than not.
"That's a shame Toots." You sputter at his response and turn towards the side table under the guise of turning the light off to hide your embarrassment, feeling the warmth in your cheeks and moving down to your chest.
With your back to him, you lay down and close your eyes, trying to push down the desire to curl up to the warmth radiating off his body. Bucky let out a huff hot air pushing against your back, he wraps his metal arm over your stomach, warm flesh arm snaking under you to pull your back to his chest.
Before you can start verbal spar over his actions he locks his arms around you, fingers curling into the softness of your abdomen. The intimacy of the touch taking away any thoughts you tried to voice. There was unfamiliar security in his touch that left you wearisome. Resigning that you wouldn’t be able to stop this, and honestly not wanting to you close your eyes once more.
Bucky satisfied at your body relaxing into his hold he smiles against the top of your head.
“So is this a get to know the weird father-daughter relationship moment?” Bucky teased into your ear.
You groan a hand flying back to smack him in the head but he grabs it pulling it down to rest on your abdomen encased by his arm. You could practically hear your heartbeat thudding in your chest as his fingers intertwined with yours. Certain his superhuman hearing picking up on it.
“This is a go-to-sleep moment,” you hiss out. Trying to quell the fluttering in your chest.
“I’m not tired though.” Bucky whines in your ear, “Tell me a story,” his fingers curling into your palm between your fingers. Looking down at where he held your hand you could feel yourself giving in. Oh, how easy it would be to just fall for Bucky Barnes.
“There once was a little girl,” Bucky pulls you flush to him, leaning his head down to nuzzle into your neck inhaling deep. You were fairly certain he could feel the increasing pace of your pulse at the touch.
“Things were good for her, for a while,” closing your eyes you continue, letting his embrace soothe your growing unease at opening up. “She had a father who would pat her head sometimes but outside of that he had no love to give her but that was okay because her mother who loved her so much made up for the loss,”
“Sounds like a great mom,” Bucky whispers against your neck, his lips resting against your pulse.
“She was, she tried so hard to make her little girl happy,” you paused “But they knew something was different about their little girl. She broke bottles, toys, and cribs with the slightest grip of her fingers. One time she held a glass too tight and it shattered,” You smirked recalling the panic in your mother and father, time having a way to make the most macabre funny.
“That was the only time the little girl saw her mother cry.”  Though remembering your mother’s fear was not all that funny.
“After that, her mother kept smiling and telling her how special and wonderful she was. Neither of them knew what to do with their child. As the little girl grew her mother taught her to be cautious of pressure, always guiding the little girl’s tiny but powerful hands.” Bucky pulled your hand from against your stomach eyes peering from your neck. He notices the faint scars on the palms of your hand.
“Gentle hands like your holding an egg,” you mused, “That’s what her mom would say.”
“What happened to her,” Bucky’s face so close to your neck you could feel the heat and moisture.
“She was murdered,” Bucky’s body tensed around you, your monotone recount of her death chilling. “Someone tried to rob the butchery, she stood up against them and paid the ultimate price.”
“There were no more gentle hands, just the overwhelming drive of vengeance and a cold distant father.” You felt Bucky slowly relax around you, his head nuzzling into your neck once more. “He asked the mob for help in getting the person who did it in exchange for services. I was 11 at the time and Marco was just a business associate of my dad’s to me.”
“Then I killed that man who touched my friend I held worth to my father for once, he made a trade.” You trembled at the memory of being handed off to the mob, you could almost hear your cries at your father’s retreating figure. Bucky cocoons you with his warmth and the feel of his chest even breathing slowly reeling you back to the present.
He turns you in his embrace, laying you flat on the bed as he remains on his side. You didn’t know you had been crying until the cool pad of his metal fingers and warmth of his flesh thumb wipe them from your cheeks.
“You didn’t have a choice Toots, you were their weapon.” You shake your head in his hands.
“No you didn’t have a choice, I did. I could have left,” Bucky’s lips downturn at the omission. “I choose to kill those people for them and I will work until my dying breath to kill the right ones from now on.” Not wanting to talk about it anymore, you bury your face into his chest and sigh with content at the feel of Bucky’s embrace and smell surrounding you.
“I’m not saying we had the same choices or the same circumstances that led us to do what we did but I will say,” Bucky pauses lifting your chin up but you keep your eyes closed.
“Don't ever tame your demons Toots, they keep you alive.” Opening your eyes you hold your breath at the sight of moonlight illuminating his face. You knew Bucky was handsome but coupled with his words and gentle touch you never believed a human being could be so beautiful to you.  It scared you.
Burrowing your face back into his chest he lets out a soft chuckle. He wraps his arms around you, dipping his face down into your hair, inhaling deep. The two of you slowly drift to sleep.

Chapter 31
Tumblr media
It felt like an eternity had passed before anyone had showed up. I was bouncing my knees nervously while watching out the windshield of the jet. It was Steve and James who ran into the hangar. T'challa was hot on their heels but so was Nat. I watched as Nat exchanged a few quick words with them then turned to face T'challa.
Steve and James ran onto the deck of the jet. Steve took the pilot seat next to me while James sat behind Steve. We all strapped in quickly since I already had everything ready for them. Just as Steve started to lift the jet off the ground I saw T'challa push past Nat then jump towards the jet. He must have missed because I didn't see or hear anything. Steve took off soaring quickly over the airport. I glanced to the side seeing Rhodey coming up beside us.
"Rhodey" I said aloud.
Steve glanced in my direction immediately noticing Rhodey flying next to us. He grabbed the handle shoving it upwards. The force pushed me back in my seat as we accelerated leaving Rhodey and the airport behind us.
"Where's Sam?" I asked after a few minutes of silence.
Steve sighed as he glanced back to James.
"He sacrificed himself so Buck and I could make it to the jet." Steve answered quietly.
I didn't dare ask anything else. I didn't want to know. I knew Sam wasn't dead. Tony and the others would have never went that far but I didn't want to know what was going to happen to Sam, Clint, Wanda, and the new guy. I had to keep my mind clear. For now at least.
Most of the trip was silent unless James was giving some kind of directions to Steve. It wasn't until we finally reached the snow capped mountains that James sighed.
"What's gonna happen to your friends?" He asked Steve quietly.
Steve was the one to sigh this time.
"Whatever it is, I'll deal with it." Steve said simply.
I could see the hesitation in his eyes. He didn't want to say he hoped he could deal with it which was probably closer to the truth.
"I don't know if I'm worth all this, Steve." James said guilt clear all over his face.
I turned around in my seat to face him. He was looking down like he couldn't bare to look at either of us.
"What you did, all those years, it wasn't you. You didn't have a choice." Steve told him with a glance backwards.
"I know. But I did it." James practically grumbled.
"James Buchanan Barnes stop it. You can sit there and drown in guilt and self pity for everything that happened or you can man up and do something to try to make up for it." I said sternly.
James looked surprised but Steve chuckled softly. James gave me a small smirk then nodded. I knew it wouldn't be that easy but I had to try. I knew James' guilt would be much harder to fix.
Before I knew it Steve was landing the jet next to some kind of snow mobile on top of one of the snow covered mountains. As soon as the jet was on the ground we were unstrapping ourselves. James and I were the first ones up. He was quick to pull open the hidden self that was intended for Natasha. He pulled out two guns handing one to me then taking one for himself. After closing the shelf back we met Steve at the bay door. He pressed the button making the door start to open slowly.
"Remember that time we had to ride back from Rockaway Beach in the back of that freezer truck?" Steve asked with a hint of a smile.
I didn't know the memory personally but the two of them had told me about that day. I had to stay home and help with Gracie that day.
"Was that the time we used our train money to buy hot dogs?" James asked with a smirk.
Steve chuckled softly.
"You blew three bucks trying to win that stuffed bear for a redhead." Steve corrected him.
A small wave of jealously swept over me at his words as James chuckled. I shook my head. That was way before any of this happened. No need to be jealous Willow.
"What was her name, again?" James asked.
"Dolores, you called her Dot." Steve shook his head.
"She's gotta be a hundred years old right now." James said softly.
"So are we pal." I told him with a small smile.
That made both men laugh and nod. We started down the ramp onto the snow and ice. The wind was wiping around us making me shiver. I was not dressed for snow. We walked a few feet away from the jet until we could see the entrance to the bunker. The door was clearly open.
"He can't have been here more than a few hours." Steve said with a slight unsure tone.
"Long enough to wake them up." James said simply.
A chill ran down my spine both from the cold and the thought of having to fight the guys James had described. We walked forward approaching the door hesitantly. James went inside first. His gun held up ready to fire. Steve was right behind him with his shield in hand. I took the rear keeping my gun as ready as I could.
We stepped into a small room with nothing but an old metal elevator. We got into the small space. I was crammed between both men with no room to move. The elevator moved quickly to my surprise. When it stopped Steve opened the metal cage barrier.
The building we stepped into was clearly old. Bits of the walls were chipped and cracked. Every surface was covered in dust and spider webs. Just the look of the place was eerie enough. We started up a small flight of stares. James leading, I was in the middle, and Steve took the rear. Just as James reached the top step a loud thud echoed through the building. All three of us whipped around staring back towards the elevator. The door creaked loudly.
"You ready?" Steve asked as he crouched below us.
His shield was covering most of his body. My gun was raised ready to fire. James' gun was aimed right over my shoulder. The metal elevator door was slowly pried open. When I saw who it was I didn't know how to feel. Should I be relieved or even more terrified?
The full head to tow Iron Man suit stepped into the hallway. He stopped then the face mask disappeared revealing the face of Tony Stark.
"You seem a little defensive." He said in his usual sarcastic tone.
"Its been a long day." Steve sighed.
None of us moved. We each kept our weapons at the ready and our eyes trained on Stark.
"At ease, soldiers. I'm not currently here for him." Tony said gesturing to James.
"Then why are you here?" Steve asked sternly.
Tony walked forward a few steps.
"Could be your story's not so crazy. Maybe. Ross has no idea I'm here. I'd like to keep it that way. Otherwise, I gotta arrest myself." Tony explained shrugging nonchalantly.
Steve stepped towards Tony caustiously.
"Well, that sounds like a lot of paperwork." Steve told him.
Tony scoffed playfully. Steve lowered his shield. I followed Steve's lead lowering my gun but James kept his aimed over my shoulder.
"Its good to see you, Tony." Steve said softly with a nod.
"You too, Cap." Tony smiled.
Tony then turned toward James and I.
"Hey, Manchurian Candidate, you're killing me. There's a truce here. You can drop-" Before Tony could finish Steve raised his hand towards James.
James instantly lowered his gun. The four of us made our way through the dusty building trying to find the man behind all of this and hopefully not a handful of murderous winter soldiers. The further in we went the worse the place looked. It certainly seemed something had happened here. Panels of glass were broken and shattered. Some had indents of bodies. We made our way down a narrow hall which opened up into a much larger room. Lights flickered on almost immediately illuminating several chambers like the ones I had been found in. They all hissed faintly as smoke drifted out from them. As far as I could see none of the soldiers had been woken up. Not yet at least.
"If its any comfort, they died in their sleep." A voice echoed over what sounded like a speaker.
We stepped further into the room to inspect the chambers. I noticed the small bullet holes right away. One hole in the glass and another in the man's forehead. He killed them? All of them?
"Did you really think I wanted more of you?" The voice questioned.
"What the hell?" James asked under his breath.
"I'm grateful to them, though. They brought you here." The voice said.
A small light flicked on in the back of the room illuminating the face of the doctor. Steve reacted instantly throwing his shield at him. All it did was make a loud thud then come flying right back at the Captain.
"Please, Captain. The Soviets built this chamber to withstand the launch blast of UR-100 rockets." The doctor chuckled.
We all started slowly walking towards his illuminated face.
"I'm betting I could beat that." Tony told him confidently.
"Oh, I'm sure you could, Mr. Stark. Given time. But then you'd never know why you came." He smiled sinisterly.
"You killed innocent people in Vienna just to bring us here?" Steve asked in disbelief.
Steve walked ahead of us putting himself only inches from the glass the doctor was hiding behind.
"I've thought about nothing else for over a year. I studied you. I followed you. But now that you're standing here, I just realized, there's a bit of green in the blue of your eyes." The man said coldly then chuckled.
I stood next to James with my gun raised just like his. I tried hard not to let my confusion show on my face. I didn't understand this situation at all.
"How nice to find a flaw." He added.
"You're Sokovian. Is that what this is about?" Steve asked him.
"Sokovia was a failed state long before you blew it to hell. No. I'm here because I made a promise." He sneered at the Captain.
"You lost someone?" Steve asked.
"I lost everyone. And so will you." He spat.
A screen like an old computer monitor clicked on behind Steve. We all turned to face it.
"An empire toppled by its enemy can rise again. But one which crumbles from within? That's dead. Forever." He said menacingly.
The screen was static for a moment then showed a survelliance video of an old dirt road. Tony and I stepped closer to it.
"I know that road." Tony whispered.
He turned to the doctor.
"What is this?" He shouted.
I jumped slightly as a car suddenly appeared on screen as it crashed. A second later a motorcycle came onto the screen. The rider got off the bike as the driver's door opened. The biker effortlessly pulled open the trunk of the car. The driver, an older man with silver hair fell to his knees in the dirt. He started to crawl towards the other man.
"Please, help my wife." He begged weakly then coughed.
The biker stepped over to the man grabbing him by the hair of his head then pulled his face back for the camera to see. A small gasp escaped me. That was Howard Stark. A much older Howard Stark but it was him no doubt about it. Tony's entire body went ridged next to me.
"Sergeant Barnes" Howard croaked in shock.
My heart stopped as Tony's head snapped over to James. He was standing with his head hung low. He already knew what this was.
"Howard" a woman's voice cried.
I closed my eyes turning from the screen as James began to punch Howard in the face repeatedly. I only opened my eyes again when I heard the woman scream for Howard. James put the body back in the driver's seat then made his way to the woman on the other side. I felt the tears fall down my cheeks as I watched him choke the life out of her. Then he simply shot out the camera and the video ended.

Hi! I am a big fan and I'm so happy you're doing fluffy prompt fics
Brains are Sexy
Fic Summary:Bucky Barnes is ridiculously nervous about tonight. He is, after all, presenting his own exhibit at this year's Engineering and Robotics Fair which just might land him a full scholarship at Columbia's Engineering Program. Somehow, he's gotta get through the presentation without passing out.
When he catches eyes with a drop-dead gorgeous guy in the crowd -- who smiles and nods and gives him a thumbs up -- Bucky's confidence suddenly doubles. Drop-Dead Gorgeous even stops by to check out his exhibit when Bucky's finished with his presentation. Impressed and lavishing Bucky with compliments, Bucky decides it's a day to be brave and ask him to join him and his friends for drinks.
But there's just something oddly familiar about this Roger fellow. Bucky's sure he knows him from somewhere.Rating: Mature Warning: N/ALength:  13.4k completeSample:
Before Bucky can respond to any of them -- and poor Tony is simply drooling for his chance to get a good look at his arm -- someone taps him on the shoulder. Much to Bucky’s surprise, it’s the person from the audience. Up close, he’s even more beautiful. So much so, Bucky almost staggers to the side. He does, in fact, need to catch a breath.
Bucky was right in thinking he was muscular. That t-shirt he’s wearing under his jacket looking ready to tear off of him. He’s a good four inches taller than Bucky so being this close to him means Bucky needs to look up at him to see that pretty face. Those sparkling baby blue eyes. That jawline. Those thick lips. All those thick lashes. Being this close does another thing, too. He looks familiar. So super familiar that Bucky even thinks he should say his name before remembering he doesn’t actually know it.
“Hi,” Beautiful Mysterious Stranger says. “I just wanted to say you did a really great job.”
A smile pulls up on Bucky’s mouth. He rolls his lips in and scratches the back of his neck. Bucky even shifts his weight.
“Thank you,” he replies. “You really think?”
“Yeah,” BMS says. “It was amazing. You put so much of yourself into your work. It was beautiful. May I?”
He holds his hands out, asking permission and consent to see the arm for himself. Bucky, probably to Tony’s dismay, lifts it so he can touch and see. The guy, even with his big and, probably strong hands, is careful and gentle.
“Does it pinch at all?” he asks. “Between the plates?”
“That was a problem in the beginning,” Bucky answers, still caught by the familiar look of this guy’s face. “But we’ve minimized that down to barely anything by making the plates lift only when the arm needs to recalibrate.”
“What about people who might want something that doesn’t stand out as much?”
Bucky stretches his lips. “That’s something we’re still trying to figure out. The plates need air otherwise it’ll overheat so the coverings they have now are no good. Shuri’s working on some things, though, that might do the trick. As for me, I mean, I like it this way.”
“You know,” BMS tells him, “I think it says a lot about you that you made sure to give credit to your team. Not everyone would’ve done that, especially if it may’ve hurt their chances. Those kids are going places, too. You guys are gonna change the world.”
“Thank you,” Bucky whispers, truly at a loss of words. I’ll… I’ll tell them you said so.”
He turns Bucky’s arm one last time before gently setting it back by Bucky’s side again and smiling at him as though this has been one of his favorite moments. Bucky doesn’t want to jump to any conclusions, but there looks to be wonder and awe in his eyes.
“This is truly incredible,” he says. “They’d be crazy not to take you.”
A blush burns Bucky’s face all the way up to the tips of his ears. He’s not sure why this person’s praises are making him melt so much. Maybe it’s because he just got through with one of the most important presentations of his life. Or maybe it’s because they’re coming from the hottest person he’s ever seen in his life who’s looking at him with, what he thinks are, heart eyes. All impressed by what Bucky’s done.
So, what the hell. He might as well go for it.
“I’m Bucky, by the way.” He holds his hand out. “I know I said James, but everyone calls me Bucky.”
The guy smiles and takes his hand to shake. “Hello, Bucky. I’m St…” He pauses and swallows and starts again. “I’m Roger. It’s nice to meet you.”
“You too, Roger. Um…” Bucky squints as though that’ll make Roger clearer. “Have we met? You look so familiar.”
“No.” Roger answers that so abruptly it’s almost like he’s insulted by the very idea. “No, we haven’t met.”
“Oh. I just… I’m sorry, you just really look like--”
“No, it’s okay, I just…” Roger pulls his hat down lower even though it can’t get much lower than it already is. “I kinda get that a lot.”
“You’re not a fugitive, are you?” Bucky jokes even though he didn’t even get a chance to say who he thought Roger looks like. He can’t imagine anyone actually being insulted by the idea. “Hiding from the law?”
Roger chuckles. “Not that I know of.”
They both snicker and then a single moment of silence passes between them. Strange, though, the short lull doesn’t feel awkward. It feels more like a moment of suspense. Of the night readying to build up to something else.
“Hey, so, since some of my buddies over there are still in high school…” Bucky points over his shoulder. “We’re gonna go to the diner after we finish packing up here. But then from there, me and my other two friends are gonna head over to a bar and maybe you’d wanna join us?”
For just one second, Bucky’s sure he’s going to say yes. Roger smiles at the invite. He even starts to open his mouth to answer. But then he closes it and frowns, his eyebrows pulling together and, uh-oh. That can’t be a good thing.
“I really shouldn’t,” he says quietly, almost like he doesn’t want Bucky to hear him.
“Um. Yeah, okay.” Now Bucky feels like a total idiot. He starts backing away to hide in the middle of his friends. “Thanks for all the nice things you said, though, that was super cool of--”
“No, no, wait!” Roger gently places a hand over Bucky’s shoulder to stop him. “Don’t go, I…” He sighs and shakes his head. “It’s not that I don’t want to go.”
Bucky waits for him to say something else and when he doesn’t, he holds his palms out. Still waiting.
“Okay?”
“It’s not you, Bucky,” he says. “It’s me.” Roger grunts at that. “Okay, that probably just sounds even worse. It’s just…” He pinches the spot between his eyes. “it’s really complicated

The moment my eyes fluttered open, my hands gripped the sheets I had gotten tangled with, trying to suppress a loud groan the would have just made my head pound harder.
I stirred and turned my head to the man lying besides me as a proof of the bizarre events that my mind remembered from the night before.
This time I was unable to hold back a now regretful groan, which ended up shaking him awake.
"what the- Fuck" he sat up, pressing the heels of his hands against his shut eyes. "fuck fuck fuck fuck"
I shifted my position in a way that I had a perfect view of his bare back.
And that view made my heart clench, because it made me remember what I wanted to talk about without him in first place.
It also proved me that, sadly, there was no way in hell that I was wrong. The patterns of the scars were signs of domestic violence without a doubt.
"Barnes" I called him, not daring to move. "we still have to talk." my voice sounded demanding, but still tender and quiet.
"what 'bout?" his eased voice almost made me doubt my gut feeling, because after all, those scars could be something else.
But then he put his shirt faster than normal, and before even putting on his underwear.
"Dot." his shoulders tensed for a moment, but he did his best to hide it from me. "what happened between the two of you?" I didn't want to ask it directly, so I decided to take the long way.
"c'mon Y/l/n" he let out a humorless laugh, getting up to put on his underwear and pants. "You're the smartest detective I've ever worked with" I managed to hide my surprise at the compliment and I sat up on the bed. "do you really need to fuckin' ask?"
"yeah" he glared at me, leaning over the bed to grab his jacket. "Barnes for fucks sake" I let out a groan, falling back on the bed after I had seen him get out of my apartment.

BUCKY'S P. O. V.
I got in the precinct an hour or so before my shift actually started, but, honestly, I couldn't care less.
I made a bee line to my desk, not bothering on greeting my colleagues "Hey man, are you okay?" Wilson asked, probably noticing how bad I looked like due to the hungover.
"always" I curtly replied, grabbing the manila folders Y/n had been working on, and displaying it in front of me.
"Bucky?" I didn't even need to spare a glance at Steve to see his worried gaze. "what are you doing here? You don't-"
"got a problem" I muttered low enough for only us to hear it. "I- Y/n and I-"
"Please don't tell me that-"
"yeah" I replied before he finished his question. "we were drunk and-"
"Oh c'mon man" Steve sighed and I let myself fall on the chair while he kept pacing besides me. "with her out of everyone? You had to fuck your co-worker, who you've been pinning over for the last four months?"
"Listen, jerk that's not the important thing right here" I hissed, leaning over the desk to be closer to him. "she knows."
"she knew the moment that Dot showed up" he replied, sitting over my desk. "why does it matter anymore though? The trials start in a week."
"I didn't want her to know" I confessed, running my hands over my short hair. "not now, not like this."
"well there's no going back, pal" Steve said with a sad note on his voice. "you gotta- oh, there she goes" squeezing my shoulder, he got up and walked to his own desk. "Mornin' Y/l/n. Isn't it a bit early?"
"I have work to do" she replied emotionless, looking for the folders on her desk. When she didn't find them, she silently walked to stand besides me and, leaning over my desk, she started to grab the folders.
"I won't tell anyone" she whispered in a tone much softer than I expected. "it's your place to do it so don't worry" with that, she came back to her desk.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was midnight and Y/n and I hadn't spoken since our brief exchange of words in the morning. Now that we were the last ones left in the department, it was impossible for us not to chat with the other.
It was Y/n who started the conversation.
"Hey listen" she called in low voice, walking to my desk to sit besides me. "I'm sorry for pushing you. I just-" she sighed, scratching her arm distractedly. "I-I just wanted to be wrong, and then" pursing her lips, she spared me a nervous look. "I don't know"
I glanced at her for a moment and, after taking a deep breath, I spoke. "I fell for her when I was really young" I stated. "Hell, I fell hard" she peaked at me, leaving the pencil she was using over the papers. "she was so charming. We got married when I was twenty-six"
"That's..." she looked at me with a puzzled expression on her face. "that's nine years"
"not really" I scratched my neck, feeling Y/n's eyes on me. "we took lots of breaks" I tried focusing on the reports in front of me. "things went south during the last three years, though. We fought. A lot." I scoffed "I loved her so I always blamed myself-"
"Bucky" she cut me off in the most tender way possible. "we- you don't- we don't have to talk about it." before I could tell her that I wanted- no, that I needed to, she spoke again. "unless you want to."
I nodded. "one day I came home late. We argued and she... Uh... Slapped me." I shrugged, not daring to look at Y/n. "and I thought, she's worried, don't mind it." Y/n stayed quiet for me to tell her the rest of the story. "slaps turned into things being thrown at me, and then... Well, you already saw it."
"Your back." I nodded at her guess. "Bucky, those are some serious scars." I just shrugged, not knowing what to answer. "what the hell did she use?"
"what does it look like?"
"I didn't look at them enough to-" I started to unbutton my shirt to take it off. "you sure of what you're doing?" I nodded, leaving the shirt aside. "Okay uh" she stood up and hesitantly traced the scars with her fingers "those three ones gotta be from a belt."
"they are"
"well then she's strong as fuck" I let out a nervous chuckle while she inspected the rest of the scars. "this one... Did she stab you"
My nod was almost unnoticeable "That's the last one"
"I wanna believe that this burn here" her fingers ghosted over it. "isn't one of them." she sighed, grabbing my shirt and handing it to me.
I realized too late my hands were shaking too much for me to be able to button up my shirt. When she noticed this, she kneeled in front of me and did it for me.
"the last time we were together, she ended up stabbing me" her jaw clenched.
"I'm guessing she came here" she got up and came back to her chair. "because you brought a lawsuit against her?"
I nodded, clenching my fists a few times in an attempt to calm my nerves. "she showed up in my house yesterday. That's why I was in the bar."
READER'S P. O. V.
"what are you gonna do tonight?" That question didn't really need to be asked, but still, I did.
"I'll stay in the break room" he replied distracted. "tomorrow I'll figure something"
Without thinking twice, I casually suggested "come to my place"
He shot me a perplexed glance "and then what?" before I could even think about replying, he spoke again. "we fuck again?"
I couldn't help but snort with a note of bitterness in my laugh. "I'm trying to be nice, what the fuck was that?"
"not sure" he muttered absently, a frown forming between his eyebrows. "I'm sorry, I think I'm too tired"
I sighed "yeah, me too" I looked up at the clock and, taking a deep breath, I spoke again "we should go home"
"we?"
"yeah" I got up, not wanting to face him for some reason I could not pinpoint. "You're staying at my place remember?"
"Y/n" he called me "there's still a week left for the trials"
"I think" I grabbed my things and put on my jacket "that we're more than capable of standing each other for a week"
I heard him standing up and I finally turned around to face him again. "Y/n, you don't have to-"
"Oh shut up" I said cut him off, throwing him his jacket. "I bet if it was Steve, you wouldn't be so hesitant"
"of course I wouldn't" he admitted, letting out a chuckle. "he's my bestfriend"
"then- I dunno" I shrugged with a grin on my face while we made our way out. "pretend I'm Steve, but stop complaining"
"That's-" he snorted falling into step with me. "that's so fucking weird"
"why? 'cause we fucked?" there was a beat of silence, but when I looked at him, we both burst into fit laughs.
BUCKY'S P. O. V.
"yeah, because we fucked" I confirmed, looking ahead of us with a smile dancing on my lips. "Where's your place, by the way?"
"what the hell? you were there last night." she shook her head a couple of times with a grin pulling the corners of her mouth. "I guess you were too drunk."
"so were you"
"yeah, but I still know where's my place" she stated proudly.
"what the f- Y/n, that's because it's your place." a snort escaped her lips. "which way, genius?"
"This way, jerk" she placed a hand on my back to guide me and, despite the thick jacket, I could still feel it's warm.
It was in that moment that I realized her touch somehow soothed me, and I found myself wishing she didn't let go of me.
At Last
Bucky Barnes x Anxious!Reader
Summary: Reader decides to get her butt out there and finally attend one of Tony’s parties, including time with Bucky.
 A / N:  This is horribly sloppy writing, but I just needed to get something out so I could find my groove again. So please cut me some slack with this one. :)
Warnings: Little cursing, minor low-self esteem, possibly bad writing (unedited), etc.
Tumblr media
“Y/N, it’s just a silly party. Just a rather large group of people hanging out and relaxing. Nothing bad is going to happen, honey,” Natasha was trying to console you and coax you into going to one of Tony’s more fancier parties of the year. Currently, you were balled up in the pillows of your bed, Natasha trying to comfort you like a mother would.
She was already dressed up in a fancy white dress, hair was done and ready to head to the penthouse of the tower. “Nat, go without me. I’m fine in my ‘fortress of solitude’. Go have fun, you and Wanda, you don’t need me.”
“Your right, I don’t need you. But I want you to be with us, have a little fun. Every time we go out anywhere you skip out, claim you're tired or not feeling well,” She sighed, standing up off the bed. “But I won’t press you any further if you really don’t want to come. If you change your mind, I brought you a couple things to wear.”
Even with your eyes closed, you could hear her making her way to the door, where Wanda waited patiently outside. Before you heard the click of the door shutting, Natasha spoke once more. “Bucky is going to ask where you are, and I guarantee when he finds you aren't coming, he’ll be sulking in the corner the rest of the night.”
After she left, you didn’t move, processing her words. She was right, after all. You always denied going anywhere. Paranoia, anxiety and low self-esteem always stood in your way. Guilt seeped through your stomach, thinking that if what she said about Bucky was true. Everyone always claimed you two were made for each other, put together by the gods. But doubt always prickled the back of your mind, like a rope yanking you away from believing he reciprocated the feeling.
You groaned, hugging your pillow even tighter. Why was your brain fighting itself constantly? In an attempt of distraction, you reached over and turned on the TV, only to instantly be playing Crazy Stupid Love. You cursed at the screen, but not changing the channel. Come on, are you really going to pass up a Ryan Gosling movie?
You dug out your hidden stash of candy and started binge eating (favorite candy), throwing some pieces at the TV while muttering grumpy comments. “It is not that easy to find meaningful love in the first place,” you grumbled. While most people yelled at the television during sports, it was your own specialty to yell at Rom-Com’s.
About 30 minutes in, your eyes wandered to the dress Natasha had hung on the door handle for you, just in case. You had to admit, it was a really pretty dress. There was a pair of simple black heels next to it, begging to be worn. You tore your eyes away from the outfit before you could think more of it. Turns out it was a matter of minutes before you were out of bed, feeling the fabric of the dress under your fingertips. You had always been jealous of girls that could really pull off a beautiful dress, but you were never one of them. In all honesty, it was just your brain throwing you off.
Another truth you had to admit to yourself, you were so tired of feeling like this. Anxious, afraid, stressed, sick to your stomach with loneliness. What did it matter what people thought of you? Maybe you weren’t the best Avenger, maybe you weren’t the best as socializing. You're always going to disappoint someone, so why the hell are you still worrying?
Right now, you could put on this dress, and go to this party. You could have fun, spend time with your friends. No, the Avengers had been your family for a while now. You could spend time with him too.
For a split second, you felt a surge of courage in your chest before doubt riddled your mind. Would Bucky like the dress? Would he make a comment, or would he even notice you in the crowd? No. These questions had to stop, enough what ifs.
Time to suit up.
30 minutes earlier
Bucky stood on the outside of the growing crowd, watching people drink and mingle. Of course Tony had to invite a little more people the necessary to his party. Bucky had only come because Steve had convinced him, telling him it’d be nice to relax, and how Buck could spend extra time with her. After many eye rolls and denials, he had reluctantly agreed to come.
He had been brave enough this evening to roll up the sleeves of his white collared shirt, revealing his metal forearm. Some girls had approached him several times asking him to dance with them, but he brushed them off. There was only one girl that was ever on his mind nowadays.
It didn’t even make sense, why his heart had chosen to become romantically inclined to Y/N. She was way out of his league and he knew it, but he couldn’t stop himself from wanting to be around her every second of the day. She was always sweet and kind, (if you're on her good side). She was always considerate and made sure that Bucky was well. He couldn’t keep his mind off of thinking about her supple lips and how her (messy, curly, straight, etc.) hair cascaded down her back and framed her flustered face. And those big (y/e/c) eyes that he could never resist, damn, he was screwed. But Bucky had no clue how to be in a serious relationship. The last thing he had that was even close was a one night stand in the 40′s. Things had surely changed.
He saw Natasha and Wanda walked through the elevator, hoping that Y/N was trailing behind them, but no luck. He met eyes with Nat, but she only gave him a sympathetic look and shook her head slightly. Bucky sighed, taking another sip of his drink and leaned against the wall. This was going to be a long night.
present time
So you know that feeling when you feel very confident about your outfit inside your home, but the moment you step out the door you regret every decision you ever made about this moment? Yeah, that was currently happening.
You were now standing in the elevator alone, going up, and trying to properly breathe. The black dress Nat had loaned you worked perfectly for your body shape, and the heels weren’t even that uncomfortable for now. Your hair was (favorite style)’d neatly, and only very light makeup powdered your face. Lets just day you felt like you were going to throw up.
Clutching the fabric of the dress like it was a lifeline, you heard the elevator ding, music loud on the other side of the door. “Okay, Y/N, you can do this. You're going to be fine. Just find Nat.” You breathed to yourself, the door opening.
The lights in the penthouse let out a soft warm glow, giving just enough light to see people comfortably but not to be harsh. Candles were placed on each stand-up tables, and people in nice clothes were scattered around everywhere. Honestly, matched up with the view of New York, it was romantic and gorgeous.
Before you could get a chance to look out into the crowd closely, you heard a surprised gasp from behind you. “Y/L/N, What on earth are you doin’ here?”
You recognized Sam immediately, turning to find him in a nice dark shirt. “Uh, I’m not really sure,” You nervously laughed, ducking your head down. “Well, glad to see your actually alive and outside of your room. May I suggest getting a drink to start off the night?”
Bucky POV
(listen to At Last by Etta James for this part)
Leaning against one of the penthouse beams by the windows, Bucky watched the city traffic from above. Boredom was now an understatement. But that was until he heard a little bit of commotion going on behind him at the bar.
He looked over his shoulder to see Natasha, Sam, and Wanda surrounding a head of beautiful (y/h/c) hair, that Bucky knew all too well. His heart picked up pace as he realized that Y/N had actually shown, and especially when she turned and Buck could see her fully. She wore a beautiful black dress that displayed her curves and her hair was (favorite hairstyle) that framed her face. Her eyes were bright as she showed off that gorgeous smile, her cheeks flustered slightly like normal. Bucky’s brain couldn’t process much more of her, stuck on an overload of his senses with how much he realized he craved her by his side constantly.
His gaze lingered on her form for a little longer before she turned to him, finally noticing him standing across the room. Her grin turned into a shyly sweet smile as they met eyes, and Bucky felt a pull telling him to go to her. As Nat, Wanda and Sam saw Bucky heading over, Nat winked at Y/N before they left. Pushing past random people, he didn’t take his eyes off her as he finally reached Y/N. “Hey, doll.”
“Hi, Bucky. Thank god your here too,” She said, her voice light. Bucky couldn’t help but grin. She made him so happy. “So, how come you finally decide to show? I gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised,” He asked while signaling the bartender. “Well, I got tired of watching cheesy movies and eating candy and thought about seeing what was going on upstairs,” She sighed. The bartender arrived, Bucky signaled Y/N to order first. “Classic Manhattan, please.” Buck added on, “Whiskey, neat. Thanks,”
“Let me guess, you were getting into some soppy romance movie and felt bad about yourself so you came up here, right?” Bucky said, chuckling and meeting your eyes again. You rolled your eyes, but not being able to hide that he knew you too well. “Maybe. You know I’m a sucker for that stuff,”  You admitted, a guilty smile on your lips.
Before Bucky could reply, he recognized the beginning melody of a song he actually recognized. “Oh, oh no. You have to dance with me now,” Bucky said, putting his drink down.
3rd Person POV
”What do you mean I have to dance with you now?” She questioned, giving him a look. Before he could answer back, he grabbed her hand and pulled Y/N lightly to the middle of the dance floor, amongst other slow dancing couples. Y/N’s breath caught in her throat as Bucky turned to her, his eyes silently asking if what he was doing was making her uncomfortable. To reassure him, Y/N lifted up her hand, signaling for him to take it. Time seemingly slowed down as they both realized how much they enjoyed this moment. He accordingly sliding his fingers between hers and looped his cool chrome arm around her waist. She could tell he was slightly hesitant, like he was eager but afraid to break Y/N all at once.
He slowly pulled her closer to him, almost possessive like, till her body was pressed against his broad chest, and Y/N followed his calm and steady steps as the song’s true beat began. All the nervousness she had been feeling since she stepped into this dress disappeared into the night, till is seemed to be only her and Bucky dancing.
“At last...”
“My love has come along...”
“My lonely days are over...”
Bucky breathed out shakily, admitting to himself that this had been the first time he was close to a girl (other than trying to kill her), since the 40s. He relished the feeling Y/N’s heart beat against his, and how right it felt to have her in his arms, safe and sound.
“And life is like a song...”
“Oh yeah yeah,
At Last...”
Bucky slowly moved his head forward, just enough to rest his cheek on Y/N’s hair. Y/N moved to rest her head in the crook of his neck, closing her eyes as she thought about how she never wanted to let go.
“The skies above are blue..”
“My heart is wrapped up in clover...”
“The night I looked at you...”
For the rest of the song, they stayed in perfect harmony wrapped up in the other's limbs, simply existing for each other.
“Okay, sunshine, I think we need to take you back to your room,” Bucky said, leading you out into the hallway. You let out a girlish giggle, placing your hand over his on your arm to make sure you didn't stumble. “Oh, whatever. I’m perfectly fine, especially when you're here,”
Bucky rolled his eyes with a smirk. Y/N had become terribly drunk after the past couple hours, and Bucky had taken on the liberty of watching out for her. He honestly expected her to be a crying weepy drunk, but she thought everything was hilarious after her 4th Manhattan. Afters successfully getting her into the elevator, he was suprised when he felt her finger touch the tip of his nose, her making a ‘boop’ sound. “You're pretty cute, with your face and all. I don’t even know why you're with me when you could be with that pretty black-haired girl that was staring you down all night.” She points a finger in her mouth and made a ‘bleh’ sound. “If I did leave, who would be there to drag you to your bed?” Bucky said, hands still on her arms considering her state.
“Meh, I’d make it. ‘Might take me a couple hours, but I’d do it.”
The rest of the way, Buck had to fight her back into her room, where she started refusing, claiming ‘sleep was for the weak’. “Why are you so stubborn, doll?” He said, opening her door with a creak and pushing her in. “Because I want what I want.”
“I’m afraid that doesn’t make sense, either.”
She scoffed at him, taking off her heels and flopping on her bed. She must have seen that Crazy Stupid Love was still paused on the TV, as her face turned to a frown. Buck watched her curiously for a couple seconds in silence. “Why is it, that everyone but me seems to be able to get men? I mean, Nat could literally seduce anybody or anything. Wanda obviously has a cute thing with Vis. But why am I the odd one out?” She spoke softly, all the giggly playfulness out of her expression. “Well, who says your the odd one?” Bucky said, sitting next to her. He had forced his voice to be as gentle and comforting as possible, seeing that her eyes were filled with some unknown emotion now. He longed to engulf her in his arms again, reassure her that someone, that he, loved her truly and deeply.
“I haven’t even been close to a guy since high school, and I don’t have the courage to talk to anyone. Not to mention I have no idea how to act. Everyone just sees me as invisible, like always...” She sighed, putting her hands in her lap. Her hair was messier than previous, illuminated from the soft light of her nightstand lamp as she tucked it behind her ear. Her breath smelled faintly of alcohol, her lips pink and wet from running her tongue across them. “I know for a fact that isn’t true. Plenty of guys were staring at you tonight,” He growled the last part, remembering how protective he felt over you. If anyone of those guys would have approached you that night Bucky would have certainly knocked their teeth out.
She ‘pffft’ again, shoving his shoulder back when Bucky couldn’t contain himself any longer, catching your cheek and pressing his lips into hers.
She didn’t pull away as Bucky let it last for a few more seconds, basking in the feeling of her warm lips on his. After she still hadn’t responded, he pulled away slightly, wondering if he had crossed a line. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t of-” He muttered, dropping his hand. Before anything else could be exchanged, left the room, running his hands through his hair as he walked back to the elevator. What had he done, had he ruined everything? Maybe she wouldn’t rememberit in the morning, maybe she’d pretend it didn’t happen-
“Bucky!” He heard a hoarse voice yell, and he turned back around just in time to see an angry stomping Y/N, before she jumped into his arms, grabbed his face and kissed him bruisingly. Thank god because of Bucky’s reflexes, he caught her hips just in time and kissed her back thouroughly.
Gasping for breath, Y/N pulled back, lips already swollen. “I adore you.”
Bucky only smiled and pulled her in for another hot open mouthed kiss.
At Last.
