#I do understand why the gentler approach is preferred over this

Unpopular opinion: I don’t have a problem with how this was translated in engsekai
(shoutout to @moss-kii for pointing this out btw mwah)
While I do kind of prefer the gentler approach of the OG translation (“I think it’s okay to run away”), the directness of this line really emphasizes just how serious Mafuyu’s situation has become.
By this point, Mafuyu’s mental state is slowly but surely deteriorating as her mom takes away her connections to the things and people she finds comfort and love in. Mizuki knows this, and at this moment, they don’t know what will happen if Mafuyu stays in this situation.
The way I‘m looking at it, phrasing it like this is a more direct way of telling Mafuyu to do whatever she needs to do to protect herself and her mind before it’s too late.

The first time, it was something like a light that wasn't quite a light.
It was bright - very bright, or at least he thought it had to be; but it did not burn his eyes as he stared at it, nor did his vision get spotty if he looked away from it.
It was somewhat pleasant, in truth. And it seemed to have a vague shape of sorts.
Hello, the beautiful thing said in an incomprehensible voice.
"Hello," Ackar replied drowsily, like he was about to fall asleep. He narrowed his eyes a little, squinting to envision the silhouette a little better: "Where have I seen you before?"
The beautiful thing laughed. It was a stilted sound, but genuine.
Here, of course, the beautiful thing told him.
"Here?"
He turned his head around: so much sand in the Vulcanus arena... He briefly wondered how the heat wasn't turning it into glass. It was really comfortable to lay on, though.
"Oh," he mumbled, "Yes, now I remember. It's been a while, hasn't it?"
Has it?, the beautiful thing asked in honest surprise: To me it almost seems like it was only hours ago, since I had to bid you goodbye. Although perhaps, to one like me, a long period might need to span several millenia to be felt as such.
"It's a fickle thing, this time of ours," Ackar mused.
I suppose it is, the beautiful thing convened.
Then it made a strange noise: it sounded almost like a sigh.
I'm so very glad I got to see you again, my friend, the beautiful thing said in such a sad way.
"Me too," he nodded. "Though I can't quite say I see you."
I apologize, the beautiful thing smiled (he could not recognize the shape of a mouth, but he heard it in the tone): It seems I can never hold onto a body, doesn't it? Not even in one's mind.
In one's mind? Oh dear.
"Why didn't you say so from the beginning? I'll make you one right away, just give me a moment."
The beautiful thing laughed again.
Ackar squinted his eyes harder, trying to ignore the heaviness settling on his eyelids as he concentrated on the figure approaching him without walking, trying to shape out limbs and a torso and a head. His imagination appeared a little too weak to be up to the task, though, and his mind seemed to be so floaty yet heavy, lulled into a comfortable stasis...
Don't stress yourself over something not meant to be, my friend, the beautiful thing said with such sweetness and the sort of blinding crooked smile of someone who never had a mouth before: It would be best for you to rise now.
And Ackar blinked, and found himself awake.
-
The second time, he realized much sooner where he was: it was a large slab of rock under the burning sun. He had to shield his eyes with his hand before they got shriveled up like dried fruits.
He looked around to find the familiar dunes of Bara Magna - and the light, edges fuzzy and gentle, looking at him.
"Oh!" Ackar smiled. "Hello there."
Hello, the beautiful thing said, very genuinely surprised.
"Has something happened?"
What do you mean?
"You don't seem happy to see me."
Oh! Oh, the beautiful thing replied in an almost bashful manner: I assure you I am, my friend. But I had not expected to see you once more, in truth.
"Why not?"
The beautiful thing did not quite reply, merely lowering what probably were shoulders.
Ackar squinted his eyes at the gentler light again, like in the first dream in which he'd seen it: it definitely had a shape, if he looked at it like this, similar to that of a Glatorian - or an Agori - a Toa, maybe? They all looked so alike, either way. Noticeably, however, he could not make out a face.
He wondered what body a being like this would prefer, or need... What bodies other than the few ones he did know he could even imagine for a being like this.
The light looked back at him quietly. Standing at a distance.
"Why are you so far away?" the Glatorian asked.
The beautiful thing blinked quickly a few times before managing to answer softly: I don't think I understand.
"I can't figure you out if you stand over there," Ackar replied so simply. He made a motion with his hand, inviting the light to come closer: "Come here; it'll be easier for me to me make something up if I can at least get an idea of you."
The beautiful thing stared bewildered.
But I have no body, it stammered.
"That's why I'll imagine you one," he replied: "But please now, come here. Just a minute."
But the light did not move.
The poor thing shifted where it stood, sand clinging to its bright form anxiously: for a moment only Ackar thought he saw it cover it completely, shaping it in a way so immediately recognizable - for a moment he saw a humanoid figure stand over its luminous face, arms outstretched, in a strangely familiar manner - but it all fell off, leaving it once more fuzzy edged and unfocused.
I have no body, my friend, the beautiful thing repeated in an almost pleading manner.
"That's why I'll imagine you one," Ackar repeated.
No, no, the beautiful thing shook its head, which was shining so much that, had it not left his eyes unhurt, it would have been utterly indistinguishable from the sun: My friend, you mustn't.
"Why not?"
I have no body - I lost the ones I had, all of them. I do not want you to waste your energy on something I am bound to slip away from.
"Well, you won't this time."
How can you be so certain?
"Because I'll make sure of it."
I don't - I don't understand, I simply don't.
"What is it you don't understand?"
Why would you wish to make me one? Only for as fickle a thing as a dream like this?
"Because I miss you."
The beautiful thing looked at him intently, blindingly bright.
It seemed utterly distraught.
Please, it begged him finally as its shine overwhelmed everything in sight - leaving only a pair of slanted, pleading eyes (the only thing he could envision clearly) to gaze at him from afar.
Ackar stared back: "Please what?"
The beautiful thing only shook its head in despair.
"Please what?"
Stop sleeping!
And Ackar blinked, and found himself awake.
-
The third time, the light still did not hurt.
It covered every inch of his vision, annihilating the shape of his own body against its shine; but it did not hurt.
Not you too, he heard the beautiful thing cry, Not you, please!
"Where are you?" Ackar called out. He felt as though he was turning around, to look everywhere in search of that vague silhouette, but he could not tell any direction apart from the other. "My friend! I am here! What ails you?"
Why you, friend?, the beautiful thing sobbed inconsolably: Why must I have cursed you of all people?
"Cursed? Where are you?" he tried to reach out, to find something on which to lay his hands - if hands he did still have among the indescribable glow.
The blinding light shifted without leaving, slithering away from him like an eel struck at its tail yet incapable of not overwhelming him.
Leave! Leave! Quickly!
"Where are you!"
Leave, now!
"Why?"
He felt the light shift again. Blinding eyes, bigger than the whole world and burning wildly like twin suns, fixed themselves upon him in a look of terror.
Oh.
Yes, of course.
He remembered now.
(Did he?)
(Or was someone remembering through him?)
Sleep could be inescapable.
And Ackar blinked, and found himself awake.
-
The fourth time, he smiled.
He'd been trying to dream this again for a long while. It had been pretty damn hard - he didn't necessarily know how to do that, after all. Then again, he also didn't necessarily know how to care for a Scarabax beetle either, or a variety of mostly adult beings who had imprinted onto him like orphaned ducklings for no discernible reason other than him being large enough, probably, but he had been handling that with a surprising amount of grace for a Glatorian; so, nothing was too impossible.
He'd been thinking about a body for days too, observing those around him with newfound fascination as he wondered absentmindedly - should it be more organic, or more robotic? Should one be able to tell, even? Which parts would feel more comfortable, more natural, which would reawaken unwelcome memories...
So when he turned, and searched through the vague environment he hadn't put too much thought into, and found it, he smiled.
The beautiful thing was looking at itself.
It flexed its phalanxes gently, almost enthralled by their color, their feeling, the way they moved. Its feet shifted shyly, sinking in the soft sands without leaving indents.
"Do you like it?" Ackar asked, smiling.
The beautiful thing's head jolted up to gaze at him.
For a moment, a single moment, his vision seemed swapped: for a moment, a single moment, he saw himself - younger than he was, from before the war, as he liked to imagine himself, yet the armor still bore the dents and scratches and wear of a life at the service of Vulcanus - and the beautiful thing in a single image.
His eyesight settled back into his head feeling as though it was somebody else's.
The beautiful thing stared deep into him, slanted eyes wide.
Why?, it asked.
Its voice sounded a little too much like his; it must have realized that too, and gotten just as unsettled by it as him, because that strange disjointed sensation struck him again and the next time he blinked his eyes were back to being fully his own.
Why?, the beautiful thing repeated.
"Because you don't have one," Ackar replied matter-of-factly. "And I missed you."
He watched its shoulders jump as if hurt: I can't keep this, the beautiful thing nearly sobbed.
"Of course you can! I made it just for you."
I can't keep this. Not forever.
"For now, you can. In a dream. In any dream I have."
The beautiful thing shook its head, clamping it hard between its hands as if to crush it, looking so horribly, terribly dismayed that it almost hurt to see.
Please, please! I beg you - stop sleeping, friend, stop sleeping.
"I'd die if did that, my friend."
You'll die if you keep sleeping, too.
"You make it sound as though I won't wake up."
That is what a dream can do!
"You're being silly," he smiled: "I can assure you, there's no dream good enough to keep me asleep forever."
Then why did you look for me?, the beautiful thing cried, Why did you go through the effort of giving me a body? Why waste your time on something like this?
Its body turned bright and blinding, but not enough to erase its shape; Ackar stared straight at it, without flinching, without hurting.
His hand reached out.
He'd had his fair share of chances to touch protodermis by now, just about enough to recognize its texture from that of normal metal; he still couldn't help but make the mask cave in and turn soft, malleable, like skin.
The beautiful thing froze as he cupped its cheek in his palm. Its pleading eyes seemed fearful for a long moment: it looked at him expecting a painful metamorphosis to take place.
But Ackar smiled, and did not change.
This wasn't the Ignika, after all.
Just a mask.
A simple powerless shape for a face, based on countless he'd seen.
Slowly, carefully, the beautiful thing relaxed within his hand. Its new arms, colored in a gentle golden tan, raised slowly to rest its wrists on the warrior's arm: they were light, almost impossibly so, and carried a tender sort of heat not too dissimilar from that of a living organic body, which radiated onto everything it touched in soothing waves.
Such a far cry from the enormous cold body it had once thought within, its absentminded musings whispered across the dream, camouflaged as the wind passing through it... And so alive, unlike the puppet of sand the Ignika had made for it...
The beautiful thing exhaled a sigh against Ackar's warm skin and slumped slightly in the steady hold. It seemed guilty as it closed its eyes to bask in the offered comfort.
"So, my friend?" the Glatorian asked again. "Do you like it?"
The beautiful thing did not reply, hiding further into his hand.
"Is that a yes?"
The beautiful thing nodded, ashamed.
Ackar chuckled gently, as if to reassure it that it needed not feel like that: "Then I'm glad I did a good job."
Its fingers curled around him.
Somehow, they seemed even softer than how he'd imagined them.
Please, the beautiful thing whispered, Don't stay here.
"Don't be like that. It's just a dream, isn't it?"
You don't understand.
"I do. You felt it through me, last time I dreamt you."
Oh.
The grip on his wrist tightened apologetically.
Oh, the beautiful thing repeated: I am sorry. I am so sorry. I shouldn't have done that. I shouldn't... I am sorry. I am sorry.
"There's nothing to be sorry about."
It was horrible. It was horrible. I shouldn't have... I shouldn't... I am sorry, I am so sorry. I shouldn't have...
"Breathe, my friend. You're safe."
It's happening all over again, Ackar. All over again. All I can do is sleep, sleep, sleep... I am powerless, I am useless. My will is null. Oh, my friend, and the beautiful thing cried tears of silver onto his hand, Oh, my friend, I can't stand it. I can't stand it and I can't fight it, for I am too weak. I am trapped. And reaching out to you I fear I trapped you here with me.
"You haven't. I've always woken up, haven't I?"
But one day you might not.
"Of course I will, my friend. I have three menaces who'll shake me right up if I tried to sleep in - make that four! Click has yet to hesitate when he wants to pinch me awake."
A gentle laugh reverberated through his skin like a song; his thumb brushed away stray tears.
"And your children, too, they're quite a handful," Ackar added: "I can't very well leave them alone in this new world you've reunited for us, now can I?"
My children?, the beautiful thing asked.
He nodded sweetly: "Your Toa, your brave warriors."
The beautiful thing's eyes seemed to shine.
"I've met Tahu," he continued: "I understand your admiration of him. He's every bit the skilled swordsman you described to me. A little short on patience, maybe."
It laughed again: Only maybe, it convened. A saddened breath left it: I still have yet to meet them properly.
"I can tell you about them, in the meantime. Until you can."
You shouldn't. You mustn't. You cannot risk...
"I missed you too. If I could still see you like this, in a dream, and bring you company and solace, I'd be delighted."
The world's edges were turning fuzzy, retreating slowly into a comfortable, indescribable monochrome that was unlike any color either could have ever seen. Neither saw that - they simply felt it, in the way one feels water slide off of an arm as it's pulled out of its surface and cooled by the air.
"See?" Ackar said. "I'm already waking up. You have nothing to fear."
Be careful, still, friend, the beautiful thing pleaded, sounding so, so far away.
"Of course I will."
The beautiful thing tore its new head away from his hand carefully, already missing the contact. It looked at the Glatorian in the eyes, perfectly still: then it smiled.
I will see you then, my friend.
And Ackar blinked, and found himself awake.

May 22, 2023
in my anxiety era.
no literally all i feel is anxiety. therefore my guts are in ruins and i feel sick inside and out. i want to be excited and optimistic about the future but i'm being dragged down because reality is hitting me. i'm completely uncertain about my future, i don't even know what i'm going to do this week, much less my life.
i feel completely hopeless. what if there's no options for my future that will make me happy. part of my brain keeps telling me that i fail at everything and that i should give up now. i'm not good at school, but much worse than that is how hard it actually is for me to transfer universities for some reason. and it's just way too expensive for me to continue to go to the university i last went to. not to mention i just have to leave that state immediately (if you knew which state, you would understand).
i also feel like i have no idea my options or how to find out anything about them. why is so much information so hard for me to find? am i truly just an idiot? how does everyone else just... do life? and i am the only one left behind, confused as hell as to what i'm supposed to do. did everyone else's parents help them or something? throughout my life i have truly just had to count on myself to figure it out. applying to jobs, applying to schools, looking for places to live, paying taxes, etc.
sometimes i feel like everyone else in the world has a little antenna and is receiving instructions on how to live and i am just alone and confused. alienated. and you may say "just google it." maybe we don't have the same google... or maybe i just have no clue how to use google. but every time i try to find actual useful information for my life on google, it's always a millions results and i don't feel like any of them have viable answers for me. which leads me to my next point.
once i noticed it, the more i see it. people taking the most basic and bare bones advice and repackaging it as something new and the oversimplification of problems. ummm, you did not reinvent the wheel sis, i know that i need to drink water for healthier skin but it's not gonna solve all my problems.
or just straight up misinformation. you have to go through 1,000 people telling you what's good for you to get to 1 person telling you the truth. but the problem is that i have no idea who is telling me the truth. everyone has their own motives and most people are only trying to help themselves.
that being said, let me share something i do know, maybe someone like me will read this. not likely but anyways.
my beloved skin routine. now, i will say i do have nice skin but it's not exactly a family thing, some of my siblings had a lot of acne and some had very little. i have been taking care of my skin since before i even hit puberty so i feel that i can attribute some of my current situation to that. i get a lot of compliments on my skin. also i would like to note that i have no medical knowledge of this subject it is all anecdotal. but anyways, let's get into it.
remove makeup, if wearing any. there are multiple approaches to this. if your skin is more oily i would recommend micellular water and if it's more dry then coconut oil. of course, anyone can try out either, depending on your skin's sensitivity one or the other might be better. but i would say be weary of using coconut oil if you are already very oily. these are my favorite makeup removers because they're effective, gentle, and somewhat cheap.
wash face. there are so many cleansers out there, it can be so overwhelming. my go to is the cetaphil daily facial cleanser. i prefer this over all of the other cetaphil cleansers, but if you need there is a gentler one. be thorough, really lather up your face and then add some water, continue to lather, add more water, lather, until the face wash is all off your skin.
dry... obvi! make sure you are cleaning your towels often enough, i would say to only use the same one for a week before cleaning it.
tone. this is actually a super important step. it feels so unnecessary but truly makes a big difference to me. put just enough on a cotton ball/pad or reusable cloth substitute to the point where it's wet but not dripping. then wipe around your face. dont get too close to your eyes, they will be more sensitive. using toner will help your other post-wash products work better. my favorite toner is the pixi clarity tonic.
serum. i loveee trying out different serums because more often than not they work well and make my skin feel super good and hydrated. while there are many serums that are supposedly directed at different skin issues, i honestly think that the main benefit is added moisture to your skin that you just can't get from a cream moisturizer. i put one drop on each cheek and maybe a tiny one on my nose and then massage it all in, making sure to get also get my neck. the serum i use right now is the pixi glow tonic serum. i also love the pixi hydrating milky mist.
moisturize. i feel like putting a cream moisturizer over your face after serum just locks in all the hydration. i recommend one with sunscreen, but be weary because i find that sometimes they are more oily than the moisturizers without. one that i have found to be perfect for me is the elf holy hydration moisturizer with sunscreen. i have used this one for two years now and i just keep buying it. it's not too light or too heavy. don't use too much moisturizer. i put a pea sized amount on each cheek, my nose, and my chin and then massage it all in. and again, dont forget your neck!
it's extremely important to be consistent. wash your face in the morning and at night. if something doesn't work for you, then try something else. and the more expensive options don't always mean better. recognize the patterns of what works for you and what doesn't. what kind of ingredients are in the products that you're sensitive to? perfecting your own skin routine can involve trying a lot of new things but when you find something that works, i would advice you to continue using that product until it no longer works for you. if it's not broke, dont fix it! also continually introducing new things to your skin can be counterintuitive. and do NOT pop your pimples!! the pimple gods will know what you did and will only bring you more pimples. although it is so hard sometimes because let's be honest sometimes it feels super embarrassing and pimples can look a little gross, but you just have to ignore it. put a pimple patch on it and forget about it.
that's pretty much it for today. it was my sister's birthday, i think she liked my present but it's hard to tell with her. i'm ready for bed. it's been a long day. goodnight, void.

Summary: Eleven years into the future, Elias and Svea embark on their next adventure.  They have tackled everything together in life thus far with the other by their side.  Now, it’s time to add someone new.
Word Count: ~13k
A/N: I hope you all enjoy reading this epilogue to Elias and Svea’s story.  This style of small snippet scenes was so fun to write and I hope you like it.  This sort of acts as an update on Brock and Grace’s story 11 years into the future as well!  Regardless, I love these two so much.
CW: difficult birth
                                                             11 years later.                                                                        ___
“I’m ready,” Svea said one night when she and Elias were in the car alone, driving home from the Parkinson’s Foundation of British Columbia Gala that they’d been to every year for almost fifteen years now, hosted by Grace.  They were holding hands across the centre console.
Elias knew he had to keep his eyes on the road since it was dark outside, but he made sure to look over at his wife.  It was so out of the blue that he knew exactly what she meant.  “You’re ready?” he asked, wanting to make sure he heard correctly.
She squeezed his hand gently as she nodded.  “I’m ready.”
>< >< >< >< ><
“So you guys are trying?” Grace asked as she sipped on her iced coffee in the quaint coffee shop in Yaletown.  She rocked Dukey in his stroller, now almost 18 months old and in his prime chubby glory, though he was already fast asleep and had been since the car ride in.  The kid could sleep, that was for sure.  It was a nice reprieve from all the sleepless nights he cost Grace and Brock at the beginning.
“Officially.  Yes,” Svea nodded her head.  She was already on special prenatal vitamins.  Already off her birth control.  Already monitoring her ovulation cycle.  Already had a checkup with her doctor to make sure everything was in order.  Already having sex with Elias nearly every moment of the day she could fit it in.  Not that either of them complained about that point.  Almost twelve years later of marriage and they were still insatiable for each other.  Elias still joked they had to make up for lost time.  “I’m not a fertile youngin’ like you were but I’m hoping it happens just as fast,” she commented.
Grace nodded her head.  “I’m just a baby-making machine at this point, so ask me any question you want.  You know nothing is off limits with me, or us.”
***
“Fill me up, Elias.  Fill me up with your cum.”
Elias groaned at Svea’s words.  He grabbed her hair and pulled her towards him so her back was flush against his chest, pounding into her at a different angle now as he felt close to his release too.  He licked and bit at the skin of her neck before dragging his lips up to her ear.  “You want my cum, pretty girl?”
“My pussy needs your hot cum, Elias.  Please.  Please.  Fuck me deep.  Fuck a baby into me.”
He snaked an arm around to her hot core and began rubbing at her clit, and after a few frenzied gasps and moans, Svea felt him explode inside of her, filling her up like she so craved and making her feel the greatest pleasure she had ever known.  Her orgasm coursed throughout her whole body and made her knees weak – literally – as they slipped further and further apart.  She would have almost fell back down face first onto the mattress if it wasn’t for Elias holding her up and letting her fall back onto his body instead.  As they lay on their bed catching their breaths, his cock was still inside her as it softened.  “Happy birthday, Elias,” she mumbled as she kissed him.  This was only round two, and they were planning to go all night.
***
“Are you serious?  You just went to the washroom like fifteen minutes ago,” Brock pestered Svea playfully as she stuck her tongue out at him, quickly walking into the washroom at the mall.
Elias was looking down at his phone.  Pregnancy symptoms, he’d googled.
Increased urination. You might find yourself urinating more often than usual. The amount of blood in your body increases during pregnancy, causing your kidneys to process extra fluid that ends up in your bladder.
***
“Svea, you love isterband!  You can’t get enough of it!” Elias protested.
“Did we get a bad batch?  It smells heinous.”
“It smells delicious!” he protested.  What she was saying was unbelievable to him.  Usually, she had to be told to stop eating the delicious Swedish style sausage, especially when they were back in Ånge or Sundsvall having it, and especially when it was a homemade variety.  But now she was making gagging noises.
“I’m gonna go to our room until it’s done,” she said as she got up from her seat at the dining table.  Immediately, Stella got up and followed her.  “Call me when it’s ready.  Hopefully it will smell less heinous by then.”
Elias watched her and Stella walk away.  He took out his phone again and opened up the internet, still on the same tab from more than a week ago at the mall with Brock and Grace.
Food aversions. When you're pregnant, you might become more sensitive to certain odors and your sense of taste might change. Like most other symptoms of pregnancy, these food preferences can be chalked up to hormonal changes.
“Sveeeeeaaaaa!” he called out.
***
Svea was holding Elias.
She let him cry.  It was important to let him cry.
His face was nestled onto her stomach, and had been there for at least fifteen minutes.  His arms were wrapped around her.  Every so often, she’d feel him move to kiss her bare skin, and she’d be able to feel the wetness from his tear-stained cheeks.
“I’m so happy,” he mumbled.  He’d been saying that since they got home from the doctor’s office, but there was something about this time, right now, that made Svea’s heart swell a thousand times its size.  His tone, the softness, the tears, the position – everything was working in a way that made her so emotional.  “I’m so, so happy,” he repeated.
“Me too,” she whispered, running her fingers through his hair slightly.
“I’m going to be a dad,” he said.  He looked her in the eye.  “I’m going to be a dad and you’re going to be a mom.”
She nodded slowly.
***
“So all the fucking worked, then,” Grace winked from the sink.
“You’re so crass,” Svea giggled as Dukey screamed at her for more food.  He already had a grape in each chubby hand and was eyeing the scrambled eggs on Svea’s spoon like it was a filet mignon.  She brought it towards him and he opened his mouth easily to eat it.  “But yes, it all worked.”
“I mean, you guys fuck all the time so I wouldn’t be surprised.  You guys still fuck like you’re in your twenties.”
“You’re really comfortable saying the f-word in front of your 18 month old.”
“He doesn’t understand words yet,” Grace dismissed her quickly, causing Svea to snort.
“And who are you to call me out?  Clearly you and Brock still fuck like you’re in your twenties too,” Svea whispered the word fuck, referring to Grace and Brock’s giant brood.
“Are you guys going to find out what you’re having?” Grace asked.
Svea shook her head.  “We both want it to be a surprise.”
“It’s more fun that way,” Grace agreed.  “I’m betting on a boy.”
***
“Can you see it?” Svea asked as she looked at herself in the mirror, her body in a fitted dress.  She switched to a side profile to see if she could see her bump better.  It was small, and barely noticeable, but it was there.
“I can,” Elias nodded, coming up behind her.
“Do you think other people will see it?” she asked.  “I want to show it off.”
Elias smiled.  “Show it off?” he asked.
Svea nodded.  “Grace said she think I’m going to be all belly – you know, like one of those women who just grows out instead of, like, around.  I waited so long to have one.  Now that I do, I want everyone to know.”
Elias’s smile overtook his face.
***
“Look at you!” Grace winked as Svea approached her, her bump styled in a tight dress that showed off the small but noticeable curve forming.  “Work it, Svea!”  Svea danced a little bit, boogieing from side to side as Grace began to do the same.  Elias and Brock rolled their eyes at each other but smiled, too, their wives completely ignoring them at this point.  “I was right, too!  You’re all bump!” Grace exclaimed.
“For now,” Svea smiled.  “I feel wider.”
“You don’t look it, but it doesn’t matter.  Get as wide and as big as you want, woman.  You’re pregnant with a baby.”
“And ask Petey to go and get you cans of tuna in olive oil at 2:30 in the morning,” Brock quipped.  Grace shot him a look.  “Five times,” he added for dramatic effect.
***
“You want some, Elias?” Svea asked as she stuffed a spoonful of strawberry flavoured frozen yogurt into her mouth.
“I’m okay,” he shook his head, a small smile playing on his lips.  “You have what you want.”
“You sure?”
Elias nodded.  He looked over at the clock – 3:00 in the morning.  He had a practice tomorrow and she had work.  But she had to have some strawberry frozen yogurt.  She just had to.  She needed it.  Which is why Elias put on his winter jacket and a pair of shoes – but kept his pajama pants on – at 2:30 in the morning and made his way to their local 24-hour supermarket, buying her favourite frozen yogurt so she could eat it.  It was all worth it, now that she was digging into it – sitting cross-legged on the bed, belly showing through her pajama shirt, eyes rolling to the back of her head every time she ate a spoonful.  Now he realized what Brock meant.  “It’s okay, pretty girl.”
“Just one spoon,” she said, already scooping it.  She held it out to him and he smiled before he ate the spoonful.  “Is it good?” she asked.
He nodded.  “It’s better at three in the morning.”
She couldn’t help but giggle.  She had the best husband.  She wasn’t sure if others would have gone and gotten her frozen yogurt in the middle of the night.  “I love you, Elias.”
“I love you too.  Now give me another spoonful.”
***
“I love your cock so much Elias, fuck,” Svea sighed out.
He was much gentler these days.  They both were.  The doctor said it was completely safe and healthy but Elias was still…cautious.  But when Svea woke up that morning placing small kisses on his shoulder, and then reached over and slipped her hand down his pajama pants, he couldn’t help himself.  So he flipped around to face her, and they kissed, and kissed, and kissed, and he teased her already wet pussy with his fingers, and he hooked her leg over his torso and slipped into her easily, the both of them sighing, the both of them savouring the intimacy.
“Does it feel good?” he asked.  She nodded quietly.  “Does it feel different?”
“A little bit,” she nodded again, biting her bottom lip.  “But a good different.”
Elias thrust harder.  Svea let out a gasp.  “I could bury my cock in your pussy all day,” he huffed out.
That made Svea smirk.  “I’d let you.”
***
“You have to be patient.”
“I can’t be patient.”
“Well, you have to be.”
“You’ve been feeling them for a week now!  I haven’t!”
“Just.  Be.  Patient.”
“But Svea—”
“Elias—”
They both stopped the second they felt it.  It happened right where Elias’s hand rested on her growing belly.  He almost couldn’t believe it happened at first, because to him, the feeling was so new.  But when he realized what had just happened, and the magnitude of it, he looked up at Svea.  She was already smiling.  “Did you feel that?” he asked.
She nodded.  “Poke where they just kicked.  Trust me.”
Elias did as he was told.  He poked.  And poked again.  Then he placed his hand on the spot.
He felt another kick.
Svea could hear a sharp intake of breath.  When she looked at him next, he was already looking at her with tears welled in his eyes.  “Svea…” he managed to get out, his voice cracking.
“I know, Elias.  I know.”
A tear fell down his face.
***
“Svea, can I touch your belly?” Violet Boeser looked up at Svea, swaying her dress from side to side.
“Me too!” Rose Boeser joined in.
“Me three!” Lily Boeser pushed her sister to the side.
“Me four!” Poppy Boeser squeezed her way in.  “Svea can I feel the baby?”
“Be gentle!” Grace called out from the picnic table.  In the distance, Brock and Elias were barbecuing the hamburgers and hot dogs.  Coolie, Milo, and Stella were all sunbathing near the barbecue.  “Svea isn’t a science experiment!”
Svea snorted.  “Yes girls, you can all feel the baby,” she smiled.  Immediately, each of the girls’ hands covered her bump.  Rose even put her head against her bump briefly.  “The baby isn’t kicking right now but they might soon now that they feel all your hands,” Svea said.
“Are you having a boy or a girl?” Violet asked.
“I don’t know yet, Violet!  It’s going to be a surprise.”
“Baaaaaaaa!” Dukey Boeser yelled from the picnic table.  Once Grace set him down, he ran over to Svea as well, not wanting to feel left out now that his four older sisters were doing something he wasn’t.  He put his tiny hands on top of Poppy’s and looked up at Svea.  “Baaaaaa!  Ba ba baby!”
“Yes!  There’s a baby!” Svea grinned.
“And I’m gonna babysit!” Violet said.
“Me too!” Rose followed.
“Me three!” Lily joined.
“Me four!” Poppy finished it out, like she always did.

“Your placenta is a bit low, but it’s nothing to worry about,” the doctor said as she looked at Svea.  “Have you been feeling any changes lately?”
“A lot more fatigue, to be honest,” Svea confessed.  “I push through it because I’m still working, but when I get home I, like, barely move.”
The doctor nodded his head.  “That’s normal.  Fatigue in the second trimester is common.  We’ll continue to monitor symptoms and monitor your placenta but it shouldn’t be a problem.  But if symptoms get any worse, we’ll put you on bedrest.”
“Bedrest?”
“Bedrest.  For your health.  And the health of the baby.”
***
“Should we start thinking about names?” Svea asked as she lay on the couch, her head in Elias’s lap as he ran his fingers through her hair.  Stella was sleeping in between her legs, letting out soft snores.  “Do we want super-Swedish or super…something else?”
“This is going to be the hardest part, I think,” Elias commented before offering any suggestions.  “I think something that translates well into both languages is best, don’t you think?”
Svea nodded her head.  Whereas Fanny and Emil chose pretty traditional Swedish sounding names for their three boys, she knew they’d have to go the “translatable” route because of their Canadian/Swedish lifestyle.  “Do you like Linnea?” she asked.
“I do, but I think it’s too popular in Sweden.  I want something nice but something that stands out.  There will be five other Linnea’s in her class,” Elias mused.
“So that’s Milo down the drain too, then…” Svea giggled slightly.  “What about Freya?”
“Too…mythological.”
“Ivar?”
“No.”
“What about Astrid?  I was going to be named Astrid, you know.”
Elias nodded.  “I like Astrid.  Astrid is good.  Do you like Oskar?”
Svea nodded.  “What about Erland, like your grandpa?”
“That’s a good middle name.”

Babysitting Violet, Rose, Lily, Poppy, and Dukey was good practice for Elias and Svea.  They’d been doing it, really, since Violet was born, and then when Rose was added, and Lily was added, and Poppy was added, and Dukey was added…well, it all just became routine.  The girls were great, and they put frilly headbands on Elias and did his makeup more times than they could count now.  His favourite look was the blue and green eyeshadow they’d created, stolen from mommy’s collection in her room.  The Canucks colours, obviously.  He’d even posted the finished product on Instagram.
The girls also never had any trouble with bedtime, even when they were much smaller.  But nowadays, Dukey did.  Entering his “terrible twos” was proving to be quite the interesting time.  But with the girls already in bed, it was easy for Elias and Svea to deal with him separately.
After tiring him out, Elias tried rocking him to get him to fall asleep, but he was still fussy.  He kept reaching out to Svea.  So Elias transferred him over, and Svea held him in her arms.  “Whatsa matter?” she asked him in a sweet voice.  “Does Dukey want to fall asleep?”
He fussed around for a bit more before settling down, laying his head on Svea’s shoulder.  He was looking down, his face in a pout.  “Baby,” he said, pointing lazily down to her bump.  “Baby.”
“Yes, there’s a baby,” Svea cooed, rubbing his back.  His eyes almost immediately began to droop.  “But Dukey is a big boy now.”
“Yaaaaa.  Dukey big boy.”
Elias watched as she continued to rub his back and coo sweet words to him as Dukey fell asleep in her arms.  His hands were almost shaking, thinking about how in a few short months, they’d be doing the same thing for their own child.

Midsommar.  Svea’s favourite time of year.
And now time for an impromptu baby shower.
Elias’s family tradition of renting a big tent on the lake was still going strong, and now, with so many new cousins and family members, the party was bigger and better than ever.  Svea’s family and Elias’s family decided to incorporate a small celebration for the impending baby.
With her flower crown adorned on her head and some special gifts already opened, Elias sat down beside his wife and held her hand underneath the table.  “Remember when we were young?  What you did to me on the banks of the lake?”
She side eyed him.  “Don’t even think about it.”
***
“Give me your hands, Svea, fuck,” Elias moaned as he watched her rock back and forth on top of him.  She did as she was told, grabbing his hands to brace against so she could keep doing what she was doing.  As she rocked herself back and forth, getting closer and closer to her climax, she tightened her grip on his hands.  “Does it feel good, pretty girl?”
Svea nodded.  “D’you still like what you see?”
“Always Svea.  Always.”
***
Grace had gone all out.  She was the perfect person to host Svea’s Vancouver baby shower when she returned from Sweden almost double the size from when she left.  She’d invited the Canucks wives and girlfriends to her house.  She’d had her sunroom and backyard decorated in the most adorable Peter Rabbit themed décor.  Stella was dressed up with rabbit ears.  She’d even thought of the cutest, most perfect party favours – mini champagne bottles with “She’s About to Pop!” adorned on it.  And not the cheap champagne bottles, either.  This was Grace.
Too bad Svea couldn’t have any.
Svea usually didn’t like being the centre of attention, but she was having the best time being the centre of attention at her baby shower.  She opened her gifts, she played the games, she laughed her head off at the game where the girls had to measure her girth.
After pictures with the guests, Svea sat down in her chair.  “This was the cutest baby shower,” Holly Horvat commented to her, nibbling on the last bit of her cupcake.  “But you know what?”
“What?”
“Remember that movie Bridesmaids?  Remember how they had puppies as the party favours?”
Svea giggled.  “Yeah.”
“Grace should have gotten us all cute little bunnies.”
***
“So the rumours are true.  You’re pregnant.”
Svea looked up from her phone to see Trevor waiting down the bar for his coffee, staring right at her as she finished telling the barista her order.  From behind her, one of her co-workers muttered an ‘Ew’ at the sight of him.  With good reason, since Trevor was Svea’s political arch-enemy.  They came up in the political world at the same time, got promotions around the same time, and were forced to work in conjunction with one another – but never actually together.  And they never got along, ever.
“Yes.  I am,” Svea nodded her head once.  “Fancy seeing you here, by the way.  Isn’t your office on the other side of town?”
“We travel all over the city,” he said.  His smarmy smile made her blood boil.  He grabbed his coffee and made his way towards her.  “Congratulations, by the way.  I wish Elias a lot of luck.  He’s going to need it.”
“Just like you after we decimated you in the election, I assume.”
His smarmy smile left his face.

The Boeser girls got so excited by the flashing lights in the arena, the season opener in full swing.  They were clapping and screaming and jumping around on their jerseys as the announcer began to announce the team, knowing that their dad would be near the beginning because of his number six.
“At number six, Brrrrrroooock, Booooeeeseeerrr!” the announcer roared, the crowd roaring as well as the girls screamed at the top of their lungs for their dad.  Dukey was clapping too, balanced on Grace’s hip and in his own little jersey.  Svea couldn’t help but smile.
Eventually, when they got to Elias, she knew the camera would pan to her.  A member of the press corps had seen her earlier.  And while she and Elias never made a formal announcement on Instagram or anywhere else in terms of her pregnancy, it was now out in the open – especially since that reporter asked about it during the media scrum earlier that day.  “Your wife Svea is pregnant now; is the focus at the beginning of this season for you on hockey or on the things happening at home?”
The audacity of that question being asked made her head spin.
Lily had already wrapped her arms around Svea’s legs, and like clockwork, they were shown on the jumbotron clapping.  At that point, the 20,000-plus fans in the arena could see she was seven months pregnant.  The bump protruded through the jersey.  And when the fans realized, they got noticeably louder.  Like, louder louder.  Cheering, whistling, smiling – so much so it sent shivers down Svea’s spine.
She smiled from ear to ear.
***
“Happy birthday, my beautiful wife,” Elias mumbled against Svea’s lips.  He’d been kissing her, slow and sensual, but also quick and fast – every type of kiss, really – for the last fifteen minutes.  He’d just made her a homemade dinner, and now he was ready for, uh, dessert.
“This time next year I’ll be a mom to a ten-month-old,” she mused.
Elias smiled.  “It feels like just yesterday that we surprised Grace and Brock,” he said.
“It’s been twelve years.”
“Still feels like yesterday,” Elias kissed her again.  “My moon, my stars, my Svea.”
***
“I think it’s cutting it too close,” Elias mused as they lay in bed together, Svea’s bump widening the distance between them.
“Elias, I’m only thirty-six weeks,” Svea rationalized.  “My mom carried Sigrid to almost 42 weeks and me right to 40.  This baby isn’t coming out anytime soon.”
“But you’ve…grown so much in the last few weeks,” he said, laying a hand on the bump.  “And you’ve been so tired, and the doctor’s appointments have to be weekly because of that and I just don’t—”
“Elias—”
“It’s fifteen days, Svea.  I’ll just let them know it’s too close.”
“Elias,” Svea said sternly.  “You’re going to the East Coast and that’s that.  You’re going to get back and we’re going to celebrate your birthday and then we’re going to have this baby.  In that order.”
***
If you looked, if you really looked at the video, you could see Elias being called off the bench at the beginning of the third period.
The announcers mentioned it after the fact.  And when play stopped about two minutes later, they were able to show the replay.  They went through some major points of his shift, spoke about how good it was, and then showed how he skated back to the bench and sat down.  About fifteen seconds later, someone came barreling through the tunnel and was screaming Elias’s name, waving him over to get off the bench.  Elias complied.  The analysts wondered – there was no hit, no scuffle, no trip, no high stick, no fall, seemingly no injury, no penalty at all or anything even worth a penalty during the play, and a perfectly healthy Elias Pettersson was being rushed off the bench?  What was going on?
The camera stayed on Elias speaking to the man in the tunnel.  Nobody could lip read but everybody could see Elias run down the tunnel once the man spoke.
“What’s wrong?  What’s going on?”
“You need to get back to Vancouver.  It’s Svea.  She’s been rushed to the hospital and she’s lost a lot of blood.”
He was a six hour flight away in Florida.
***
There was blood everywhere.  All over their bed.  All over their sheets.
Svea called an ambulance.  She called Grace screaming and wailing into the phone.  She called her mom in Sweden crying.  The pain was almost too much.  The contractions were too.  When the paramedics came, she was loaded into an ambulance and rushed to the hospital.  “My husband.  You need to call my husband.  He’s in Florida playing hockey.  He needs to be here.  He—He—the baby—the baby—the baby—”
***
It was the worst six hours of Elias’s life.  Eight hours really, from leaving the rink to getting off the plane and rushing to the hospital.  Grace called in the last minutes before the flight took off to update him.  Svea had placenta previa.  That’s why there was so much spontaneous blood loss.  The doctors had stopped the bleeding, but she’d needed a blood transfusion.  It went fine.  But now she was in labour.  At 37 weeks.
“It’ll have to be a c-section,” Grace explained.  “There was too much blood loss and too big a risk for more blood loss for a vaginal birth like Svea wanted.  And I don’t – Petey – she will probably need a hysterectomy.”
“Hysta-what?  What’s that?”
“They’re going to have to remove her uterus, Petey.  This baby is going to be your only baby.”
***
Elias rushed to put on the scrubs provided by the nurses.  He rushed to get back into the delivery room knowing that Svea had already had a blood transfusion.  He rushed to be in the room to watch the doctor operate – literally operate on his wife – so that Svea could deliver the baby safely and have her hysterectomy.
***
Margot Pettersson.
They named her Margot Pettersson.
After all the blood, the fear, the frantic phone calls, the six-hour flight, the surgery, the operation – Margot was here.  And she was healthy.
It took everything within Elias not to break down crying as he held her in his arms and lay in the hospital bed with Svea, who was recovering well considering the trauma and how much blood she lost.  They couldn’t take their eyes off their daughter.  She was perfect in every way, from the blonde hair on her head to her tiny, tiny, tiny little toes.
She was finally here.
***
It was a few days later when Svea felt confident enough to be in a photo – she didn’t “look like death” anymore, as she put it.  Elias sent it to his teammates.  He was on some brief phone calls with the powers that be on the Canucks for a statement and for some time off.
When he rejoined Svea in their hospital room as she fed Margot, he sat on the bed and wrapped an arm around his girls.  “The bed,” she said suddenly, looking at him.  “We have to buy a new bed.  I can’t sleep in that bed anymore.  All I’ll see is blood.”
“Grace and Brock already took care of it,” he said.  “Everything is going to be fine when we get back home.  I promise.”
***
The Vancouver Canucks organization would like to extend their congratulations to Elias and Svea Pettersson on the birth of their daughter, Margot.  Mrs. Pettersson continues to recover in the hospital.  Elias will be a healthy scratch for the next four games to ensure the health and well-being of his family.
***
Svea was on bed rest in their new bed, Stella’s snout resting on her post-partum belly.  Elias never wanted to let go of Margot unless it was to put her back in Svea’s arms.  He couldn’t keep his eyes off of her, either.  Even when Svea was breastfeeding.  He found it to be the most beautiful thing in the world, watching his wife, who he loved so much, feeding and nourishing his daughter, who he loved so much.
He cuddled with them, snuggling into Svea’s side as he watched Margot.  The little sounds she was making brought a smile to his face.  He brought his hand up and caressed her head gently, the blonde hair atop her head perfectly combed.
“I finally have boobs now,” Svea whispered.
Elias snorted and Svea had a cheeky smile on his face.  “I’ve always loved your boobs.  Big or small.”
“Hmm, don’t I know it,” she hummed, giving him another kiss.  She looked down at her daughter.  “She’s perfect, isn’t she?”
“In every way.”
***
Elias’s birthday was much quieter this year.  Well, quieter in the sense that there weren’t any friends in his house; quieter in the sense that he wasn’t at some hip restaurant downtown eating an incredibly expensive steak while sipping on an incredibly expensive glass of wine while he wore an incredibly expensive outfit and an incredibly expensive watch, watching his beautiful and sexy wife in an incredibly expensive dress sip sultrily on an incredibly expensive glass of wine as she eyed him up and grazed his leg with her heel under the table.
But this was still his favourite birthday ever.
Sitting on the couch, a warm bottle of pumped breastmilk in his hands, feeding his eight-day-old daughter.
His life was perfect.
***
“She looks like Petey,” Brock said as he held a swaddled Margot in his arms.
“They have to biologically, you know,” Grace jumped in.  “But my god you two, her eyes are so damn blue.  I mean I know that’s the Swedish thing and all, but they’re sooo blue.”
“I know,” Elias smiled.  “Even the doctor mentioned it during one of her checkups.  She’ll have a beautiful set of eyes, that’s for sure.  Just like her mom.”
Svea swooned.  She watched as Brock craned his neck down and placed a quick kiss atop Margot’s head.  “Getting baby fever again, Brock?” she winked at him.
“No no no, five is plenty,” he chuckled.  “I just love that newborn baby smell.”
Svea, Elias, and Grace let out the all-knowing “Oooooh” sound in agreement.  “You’re so right, babe,” Grace nodded.  “It’s the best smell in the world.”
***
“God, I missed this,” Svea said as she took a huge gulp of crisp, clean Vancouver air.  It was her first time outside with Stella in weeks, now that she was off bedrest and fully recovered from her c-section and hysterectomy.  Her doctor had okayed light physical activity, so she’d invited Grace and Dukey over for a short walk around the neighbourhood.  Grace had obviously agreed, and had brought Coolie and Milo along.
“Me too.  You’ll be back running and doing yoga in no time,” Grace said, remembering some of their jaunts over the years where Grace would bring out Violet, or Rose, or Lily, or Poppy on walks or runs in their strollers too.  When she finished strapping Duke in, and made sure he had his snacks, she rose to her feet.  “You feel good?”
Svea nodded.  “We just have to go slow.  And I can do maximum half an hour.”
“I’ll go as slow as you want me to,” Grace said.  She peeked into Margot’s stroller and noticed she was already asleep.  Her son, on the other hand, was screaming about his grapes.  “Let’s hope Dukey’s grapes last the entire time.”
***
Did Elias and Svea go all out for Margot’s first Christmas?  Yes.
Did Svea dress her up in a red dress, green shoes, frilly headband, and reindeer antlers?  Yes.
Did Svea dress her up in an elf outfit, complete with curled shoes?  Yes.
Was there a portrait with the new family and Santa Claus?  Yes.
Did Elias and Svea send the pictures to their family members, co-workers, and every teammate?  Yes.
Did it get leaked to the media?  Yes.
***
“She’s gonna start her chubby phase soon,” Brock said as he held Margot in his arms, feeding her with a bottle, as Elias sautéed some mushrooms on a skillet as part of their lunch.  “She’s eighteen weeks now?”
“Yeah.”
“It’s the best,” Brock said.  “They got so chunky.  So squishy.  I swear I went crazy for every one of them.”
“Margot was born at 37 weeks though.  We might have to wait a little bit longer.”
“Well, call me the second you start noticing chunk,” Brock said.  “I’ll be over here in a heartbeat.”
***
“There was a lot of blood.”
Elias held Svea in his arms as they lay down in bed together after one of Margot’s middle-of-the-night feedings.  Margot had been really fussy and took a while to be put down and fall asleep again; Svea had been unable to go back to sleep herself once she was in bed, tossing and turning and not even being able to keep her eyes closed.  Even Elias’s cuddling wasn’t helping, which meant something was on her mind and keeping her restless.  So he’d asked her what was wrong.
And that’s what she responded with.
He knew immediately what she meant.  Ever since that day, when he was called off the bench and rushed back to Vancouver, he’d beaten himself up for not being there, as a husband should have been for his wife, as she went through such a traumatic event.  It traumatized him, but that didn’t even take into consideration how much it traumatized her.  That’s what really mattered here.  She still had to deal with it.  She still had to see it in her mind when she closed her eyes.  She had the memory, not him.
It killed Elias inside knowing Svea had to carry that burden with her.
“You were so strong, though.  And your strength gave us our daughter,” he said.
Svea nodded slightly before she looked at her husband.  “Were you scared?  When they told you, I mean.  When you were rushed off the bench.”
Elias nodded his head immediately.  “I was terrified.”
“Of what?”
“That I was going to lose you and the baby,” he admitted.  “Were you scared?”
“I was,” Svea said.  “Do you…are…are you angry we can only have one?”
“Why would I be angry?” he was beside himself at her question.
“I don’t know.  I just…are you angry we didn’t have a boy?  Or that we can’t have a son in the future?  Or another daughter?  Are you angry I wasn’t healthy enough to—”
“Stop it right now,” he ordered.  Tears were falling down his face at her words.  “You’ve given me everything I’ve ever wanted and needed in my life.  Do you understand me?  Everything.”
Svea was crying now too.  “You’ve just been so good to me, Elias.  I want to give you everything too, like you always give me.”
“You already have,” he whispered, kissing her, feeling her tear-stained cheeks on his.
***
“You want to hold the baby, Violet?” Svea asked quietly as the Boeser girls looked at tiny Margot resting in Svea’s arms.  Violet nodded her head desperately and outstretched her hands automatically.  “You have to sit on the couch, baby girl,” Svea said, and Violet did as she was told.
Svea extended her arms and passed Margot to her slowly.  “Put your arm up,” she said.  “You have to support her head.”  Violet nodded.  Margot fussed a little bit, but once she was in Violet’s arms, she stopped.
Violet smiled.  “Hello Margot,” she said in a soft voice, smiling.
“Hello Margot,” Rose mimicked in the same voice.
“Hello Margot,” Lily mimicked in the same voice.
“Hello Margot,” Poppy mimicked in the same voice.
All at the same time, the girls leaned forward and placed light kisses onto Margot’s face.
Svea couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear.
***
“Look at my beautiful baby girl,” Elias cooed as he finished changing Margot’s diaper, buttoning up her little onesie as she wiggled on the change table, looking up at him with her big blue eyes.  “Hällo Margot!  Hällo!”
She gurgled happily.  Elias chuckled as he finished the last of the buttons, eventually scooping her up in his arms carefully and holding her against his chest.  She settled in quickly, calming herself down as Elias walked from her nursery to his bedroom.  Just as he walked in, Svea walked out of their ensuite bathroom with a robe on, drying her hair with a towel.  When she saw her husband and daughter, she smiled automatically.
“Hello my loves,” she whispered, approaching them slowly.  At the sight of Svea, Margot gurgled happily again, even waving her arms up and down once excitedly.  “Hello Margot!  Hello my beautiful baby!”
“Beautiful baby had a stinky diaper this morning,” Elias griped jokingly.
Svea laughed, placing a light kiss on top of Svea’s head.  “Making daddy change the stinky ones?  Good baby.”
***
Margot’s first game, after she got all of her appropriate vaccinations, was against the Toronto Maple Leafs.  Elias and Svea made sure to go to the arena early so that his teammates could see her before the game.  Even Elias’s friend William Nylander from the Leafs was able to pop over and congratulate the couple.  Svea appreciated the gesture, since she knew how busy he was.
“Oh my Gooooooddddd,” Holly cooed as she saw Margot dressed up in a little Vancouver Canucks jersey.  “The baby jersey!  The baby jersey!  Can Gunnar be this small again?!”
Svea laughed as Holly clutched at her heart.  Bo smiled from ear to ear when he noticed, too.  “She’s adorable, Svea.”
“Thanks, Bo.”
“Bo, remember when Gunnar was that small?” Holly asked her husband.  She then wrapped her arms around his one arm, looking up at him sweetly.  “Can we have another one, Bo?  Please?”
“Holly.”
***
Svea hauled some of the grocery bags – the lighter ones, at least – inside the house.  She would leave the other ones for Elias.  He’d probably get angry that she brought in the light groceries, anyway.  He always brought things in – ever since her surgery, at least.  But she was feeling almost back to normal now, and she wanted to start contributing more again.
“Elias?” she called out.  No answer.  She set the grocery bags down in the laundry room and made her way into their house.  “Elias?” she called out again.
It was only then when he heard loud, screaming giggles coming from the family room.  Following the giggles, Svea heard the sound of raspberries being blown against skin, and an orchestra of loud, happy giggles again, this time from both Margot and Elias.
She smiled to herself.  As she walked further into the house, turning a corner, she looked into the family room to find Elias on his knees in front of the couch, Margot on the cushion in between his arms in just a diaper, and him blowing raspberries on her tummy.  Margot was laughing and wiggling in pure happiness.  And when Svea’s presence caught Elias’s eye, he looked up.  “Hey baby,” he smiled, before diving in one more time to blow raspberries.
Svea’s heart swelled.
***
“You and Elias deserve a nice Valentine’s Day date,” Grace said before taking a sip of her water.  “How about Brock and I watch Margot for the night and you two go out for a nice dinner?”
Svea loved the idea, but she was still a bit apprehensive.  It would be the first night away from Margot.  And though she trusted Brock and Grace more than anyone else in Vancouver with Margot, it would still be a lot for her, at least mentally.  She assumed it would be the same for Elias.  “I’ll mention it to Elias, and we’ll think about it,” she said.
Grace eyed her.  “Don’t think about it, just do it.  I know it’s hard to think about, but time away from the baby will do you both some good.  It’s necessary.  It’s healthy.  It’s hard but it’s healthy.”
***
“This steak is delectable,” Svea commented as she forked another slice of her filet into her mouth.
Elias nodded from across the table.  “The wine, too.  It was a good choice,” he said before he took a sip.  He looked lovingly at his wife and smiled before he set his wine glass down.  “D’you miss Margot like I do?”
Svea giggled and nodded her head.  “I do.  But I’m enjoying our Valentine’s Day date,” she said.  “I wouldn’t be anywhere else in the world.”
“Me neither,” he reached across the table to grab her hand.

Elias and Stella walked into the bedroom quietly, Elias holding mugs of tea in both hands.  He saw Svea sitting up, looking down peacefully at Margot whom she was breastfeeding.  Svea grabbed the mug from Elias and took a quick sip before setting it down on the nightstand.  Elias climbed into the bed, Stella following, and nestled in close with his two girls, gently stroking Margot’s blonde hair.
“Thank you for the tea,” Svea said softly, looking at him before pursing her lips slightly, signaling she wanted a kiss.
Elias gave her one easily.  His lips lingered on hers, giving her small, quick kisses.  “You’ve given me everything I’ve ever wanted,” he whispered huskily.  “The least I could do is bring you tea.”
“Hmmm,” Svea hummed happily.  “Can I suggest some other things you can do tonight?”
Elias smirked.

“Look here little Margot!  Look here!” the photographer cooed as her assistant jingled some bells to get the attention of the baby, dressed up in the cutest little dress and tights.  Margot babbled slightly and smiled at the noise.  Elias could hear the shutter of the camera go off like crazy.
“Her eyes are showing up spectacularly on camera,” the photographer commented.  “What a beautiful colour they are.”
Elias and Svea continued to smile throughout the photoshoot.  Then, when they had to take a break, they changed Margot into a different outfit and went outside to take some more pictures.  After a second break, they changed Margot into her last outfit before going to their bedroom and finishing the photoshoot.
“The photos should be ready for you in a few weeks, after editing,” the photographer said as she packed away her equipment.  By this point, Margot was fast asleep on Elias’s shoulder, her chubby cheeks amplified.  “She’s a cutie, you guys.  I mean, just adorable.”
Elias smiled, placing a soft kiss atop Margot’s head.  “She’s my little princess.”

At a cute little café in Yaletown, Svea pushed her stroller back and forth to rock Margot to sleep.  Svea hadn’t gotten any sleep last night thanks to her daughter, and Elias being away on a road trip didn’t help matters.  Svea knew babies went through sleep regression – Margot had been a fantastic sleeper, save for the last two weeks – but she wondered how long this would last.  She was trying everything she could, but Margot wasn’t sleeping.
When Grace arrived without any of her kids in tow, looking especially stylish with a cute hat and thigh-high boots, Svea waved her down.  Grace waved back and waited in line to order her coffee.
“You look like you haven’t slept,” Grace commented as she set her coffee down on the table and sat in the seat opposite Svea.
“That’s because I haven’t,” Svea admitted.  She hadn’t even bothered to put on makeup this morning.  “Margot kept me up all night.  She was so fussy, Grace.”
Grace furrowed her brows.  “Do you have milk with you?” she asked.
Svea nodded.  “Of course I do.  In the bag.”
Grace nodded, getting up from her seat.  “Come on.  We’re going home.”
“Wait—what—”
“We’re going back to my house, and you’re sleeping, and I’ll watch and feed Margot.”
Svea could cry.
***
“Look.  At.  The.  CHUNK!!!!!” Brock practically screamed as he looked over Elias’s shoulder as Elias finished putting a new diaper on Margot, who was wiggling happily and cooing at seeing Brock’s face over her dad’s shoulder.  “Look at you!  Look at your chunk!  Look at it!” Brock kept repeating.
“Brock—”
“What’re you gonna do with all these rolls?  What’re you gonna do with all these rolls?!”
“Brock—”
“You gonna open a bakery?  You gonna open up a bakery with all these rolls?”
“BROCK!”
“WHAT?!”
“Get me her blanket!”
Brock moved to the side and reached over to get the soft blanket he knew Elias wanted.  “You don’t have to be so mean,” he grumbled at his best friend.
***
“Look, Svea!  Look!  Look!” Elias’s voice was frantic as he called Svea over from the kitchen.  He could hear her footsteps as she rushed over to the family room.  “Look!”
Svea looked at Elias on his stomach on the floor, a few feet away from Margot who was also on her tummy.  She’d hit the traditional milestone of rolling over a bit early – four months in, instead of five – and now, at just over six months old, Svea watched as Margot started creeping along the floor, moving closer and closer to her dad as he kept wiggling further and further away.
“Eeeeeeh!” she would cry out in complaint of her seemingly not getting closer to her dad.  “Eeeeeh!”
“Come on Margot!  Just a little bit more!” Elias smiled wide.
She creeped some more, and when she was finally close enough, Elias began peppering her face with kisses.  She giggled at the feeling and screeched with happiness when he picked her up and held her in his arms.  “Baby’s on the move,” he smiled at Svea.
She nodded her head.  “We’re not gonna be able to sit down anymore.”
***
“Where do you think you’re going, missy?” Svea asked playfully as she watched Margot crawl along the hardwood floor of the kitchen.  Her chunky rolls filled out her avocado-printed onesie she was wearing as she made a beeline for the sunlight coming through the sliding door.
“Aaaaaeeeeeeee!” Margot squeaked at the sound of her mother’s voice, looking back.
“Where are you going?” Svea asked.
“Eeeeeeeaaaaaaaaa!”
“Eeeeeeeaaaaaaaaa!” Svea mimicked, knowing she should be mimicking the sounds for Margot’s development.  She grabbed her phone off the counter and walked around her, crouching down on the floor and opening her camera for a video.  “Come on Margot!  Let’s show daddy how you can crawl!”
“Aaaaaaaadadada!!” she said, continuing her babbling and crawling as she made her way against the hardwood floor and towards the camera.
Later, when Svea held Margot on hip as she fixed a quick bowl of raspberries as a snack, she sent the video to Elias.  His response was almost immediate.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
***
“She’s cruising now,” Svea explained on the phone to Grace.  “Like, she can stand, but the second she takes a step she’s too wobbly and falls down.  But if she’s got the couch or the coffee table, she’s okay.”
“She’s going to be walking soon,” Grace said confidently.  “You guys think you weren’t able to sit down once she started crawling?  Well, good luck now,” she giggled.
“I don’t know how you did this three times in a row while pregnant with the next,” Svea admitted.  “Crouching down, picking her up, over and over and over again…all that with a bump?  You’re superwoman, Grace.”
“I’m not superwoman, I’m just a mom,” Grace said.  “For going what you went through to deliver her, you’re superwoman too, you know.”
***
“Come to daddy, Margot.  Come to daddy,” Elias beckoned as he sat with his arms and legs outstretched about six feet away from Svea, who was holding Margot up by just her hands.  All of the videos Svea had sent him over the last road trip of Margot trying to walk and then falling made him want to practice once he got home.  He refused to see his daughter’s first steps over an iPhone video, and Svea understood that completely.
“Go to daddy,” Svea whispered in her daughter’s ear as she let go of her hands.
Margot wobbled a bit, took a cautionary first step, then a second, and at her parent’s excited voices, she smiled and continued with her steps, reaching Elias who was so elated with joy that he scooped her up in his arms and peppered her chubby face with kisses.  Svea could see tears escaping his eyes as he repositioned his daughter, holding her up again by her hands, and encouraging her to walk to Svea.  Some more wobbly steps and a mid-distance squat later, Margot was back in Svea’s arms, getting more kisses.
They had a walker.

“Your costumes are sooooo awesome, girls!” Svea cooed as she looked at Violet, Lily, Rose, and Poppy dressed up in their witch costumes as she entered the Boeser house.  “Are you girls ready to go trick-or-treating?”
The four girls nodded their heads excitedly.  “What’s Margot dressed up as?!” Violet asked.
“You’ll see when Elias brings her in,” Svea smiled, watching as Dukey, dressed up as Buzz Lightyear came running towards the door.  “Hi Dukey!”
“I Buzz Lightyear!” he screamed excitedly.  “Look!” he turned around to show off the wings of the costume.  He raised his hand in the air.  “Iffity and blonde!”
“To infinity and beyond!” Svea copied him.
Before they could go any further, Elias walked through the door with Margot in his arms and her diaper bag over his shoulder.  “Hello girls,” Elias greeted them.  “Nice costumes!  Look at Svea’s!”
The four girls cooed at her, admiring her in her cute little costume.  “Mooooooom!  Svea’s a strawberry!”
From inside the house, Elias and Svea could hear Grace scream in delight.
***
“Haaaaaappy Birthdaaayyyyy to you!  Haaaaaappy Birthdaaayyyyy to you!  Haaaaaappy Birthdaaayyyyy dear Maaaaarrrgggooooottt!  Haaaaaappy Birthdaaayyyyy to you!”
Margot was smiling from ear to ear as she giggled and clapped excitedly as everyone sang to her.  Her first birthday party was a hit – Irene and Torbjorn were able to come in from Sweden, Emil and Fanny were Zooming in with their kids, and practically the entire team and their kids were over the Pettersson house celebrating the big day.
“Blow, Margot!  Blow!” Elias bent down so he was at the same eye-level as his daughter in her high chair.  He showed her how to do it before watching as she tried to mimic him.  “Blow!”
Instead, Margot made a loud fart noise with her mouth.
Everyone laughed hysterically.  Elias could hear Brock scream “I hope someone got that on video!”  Elias watched as Svea bent down to be at eye-level with Margot too.  “On three!  One, two three!  Blow!”
***
“Say mama.  Mama,” Elias said as he lay on his back on the couch and hat Margot sitting on his chest.  “Mama.  Mommy.”
“Dada.”
“No, no dada.  Mmmmmmmaaaammmmmmaaaaa,” he emphasized.  “Mama!”
“Dada!”
“MAMA!”
“DADA!”
“Elias!” Svea yelled from the kitchen.  “You can’t force her words.”
Elias grumbled.  “Mama,” he said, much quieter so Svea wouldn’t hear.  “Mama.”
“DADA!”
***
“Gröt,” Svea cooed as she spooned some more oatmeal into a spoon.  It was already all over Margot’s face and hands, Margot loving every spoonful.  Her big blue eyes looked at the spoon excitedly.  “This is gröt, Margot.  Gröt.”
“Do we really want Margot’s first Swedish word to be oatmeal?” Elias laughed as he joined his girls at the table, setting his mug of coffee down and placing Svea’s tea beside her on the table.
“It’s at least a single syllable,” Svea mused.  She looked back at Margot, who had just swallowed the spoonful of oatmeal and was pointing at Elias taking a sip of his coffee.  “Gröt.  Gröt!” Svea repeated.  “Gröt!”
Margot pointed emphatically.  “Fika!” she said suddenly.  Svea’s and Elias’s jaws dropped.  “Fika!”
Elias snorted from behind Svea.  “Fika.  Of course her first Swedish world would be fika.”

“If I’m going to go back to work – I mean, I am, it’s not a question – we need to find a good daycare,” Svea said, eyes focused on her laptop screen as Margot was napping.
“More important than the daycare, Svea, is if you’re ready,” Elias cautioned.  “Are you ready to go back to work?”
Svea had thought about it a lot – she really did.  Being at home with Margot was amazing, of course – it was the best thing ever, and she valued every millisecond – but she was ready to return to her career.  It wasn’t that she had a duty or an obligation to, or that she was feeling forced or pressured or put it on herself to be a do-it-all working mother.  She just…genuinely felt like it was the right thing to do for her.  Svea never saw herself as a stay-at-home-mother, even though she and Elias had boatloads full of money and she was told by co-workers, well-meaning-but-ultimately-offensive-friends, and random people that she didn’t need to work.  “I’m ready,” she nodded her head.  “I know it’s not going to be the same as it was before, that I won’t be working as hard, but that doesn’t matter to me.  I’ve already perfected my role.  I’ve already won an election for my party.  But I still…I still want to work.”
Elias nodded his head.  He knew Svea meant every word.  And who was he to say no?  There was no way.  He never held Svea back before, and he wasn’t going to start now.  “Then let’s look at daycares.”
***
“Every daycare we’ve been to, I haven’t gotten the best feeling,” Svea admitted to Grace as she was over her house for coffee.  Dukey and Margot were playing in their playpen in eyeshot as the women spoke about their lives.  “And it’s not me being…me.  I can’t picture Margot there.  I just can’t.  And it’s not me being picky either.  We even brought her to our favourite place to see if she’d like it and she was wailing the entire time.”
Grace was nodding in understanding, but the second Svea mentioned picturing Margot in a daycare, the lightbulb went off in her brain.  “Svea, why don’t I watch her every day?”
Svea was taken aback.  “W—What?”
“What if I watched her?  I’m already home with Dukey anyway.  And you know Margot is comfortable here at the house, and she knows me.  What if I watched her?”
Svea shook her head.  “Grace, no.  No.  I couldn’t do that to you—”
“You’re not doing it to me if I’m offering,” Grace said.  “You know how much I love kids.  It would be so fun for me!  And for Dukey!  And you know how much the girls adore her so when they get home from school you know they’ll be all about it too.  Will you promise me you’ll at least think about it?”

“Oooooooooohhhhh fuuuuuuck, Elias,” Svea moaned, looking over her shoulder at Elias who had just slipped into her from behind.  “Feels so good baby.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” Svea nodded.  “I love it when you fuck me from behind.”
She could hear Elias let out a low chuckle.  He began moving in and out of her slowly, almost too slowly, because Svea groaned, and Elias watched as she grabbed at their bedsheets, making her knuckles white.  “Fuck me, Elias.”
“What’s that, pretty girl?” he asked mischievously.
“Fuck me, Elias.  Fuck me harder,” Svea begged.
Elias bent over, placing kisses along her shoulders before nestling his head in the crook of her neck so he could whisper in her ear.  “I fucking love it when you beg.”
***
“Can you say bye-bye to Mama?  Bye bye!” Grace cooed as she bent down to be at level with both Margot and Svea who was already bending down, having kissed her daughter for a solid two minutes, unable to leave just yet.  “Say bye-bye!”
“Bye bye Margot!  You be good for mommy!” Svea cooed, her voice cracking as she began waving her hand so Margot could mimic her.  “Bye bye!”
“Bah-bah!” Margot clasped her hand open and closed.  “Bah-bah!”
“Bye-bye!” Svea wiped a tear that had fallen from her eye.  She stood up, and Grace followed, picking up Margot and balancing her on her hip.  “Please call me if—”
“I will, I will,” Grace interrupted.  “Please don’t worry.  I’ve got it.  Enjoy your first day at work knowing your daughter is safe and having fun.”
“I’m definitely gonna try…can’t guarantee it’ll happen,” Svea tried to joke.

“Go like this Margot!  Like this!” Elias said as he was on his knees, clutching a mini-stick, trying to show Margot how to hit the ball into the little hockey net they purchased months ago, which inevitably became the one thing that helped Margot learn how to walk the most.
Margot watched intently as her dad gripped the mini stick and hit the ball into the net, fetching to get it before placing it in front of her.  “Shoot!  Shoot!” he encouraged, making a swooping motion with the stick.
Margot looked down at the ball, and in one swift movement, she brought her mini-stick down and hit it straight into the net.  Elias went wild.  He began screaming and clapping and raising his hands in the air, causing Margot to start screaming and clapping and raising her hands up in the air too.  He swooped her up in his arms and gave her raspberry-style kisses, causing her to shriek and giggle loudly and controllably.  “Margot wins the game!  Margot wins the game!” he screamed in between kisses.
Svea could hear them from upstairs as she read over some work documents for tomorrow.  She felt her heart swell with love.
***
“Who knew when we were twenty and lame that we’d be surrounded by this many girls,” Brock mused, cracking open a can of beer for Elias.  Both men looked out onto Elias’s backyard to see Violet, Rose, Lily, Poppy, and Margot all playing together, blowing bubbles and trying to catch them without popping them.  Margot was always unsuccessful, but she was having the time of her life.
Elias nodded his head.  “We’re a pair of pretty lucky guys though,” he commented.
Brock nodded his head, looking at his four daughters.  “The luckiest guys in the world.”
Later in the afternoon, when Margot had to go down for her nap, Elias was rocking her back and forth as she fell asleep on his shoulder.  Rose was quiet as she stood with him in the room, keeping a watchful eye and making sure Svea was falling asleep.  When Elias laid Margot down on the bed, Rose finally spoke.  “Uncle Petey?”
“Yes Rosey?”
“Can Margot be my sister?”
Elias smiled.  “I think she already is.”
***
“I’m actually gonna sob.  She looks so cute,” Svea commented as Elias finished putting on Margot’s toddler skates.  Margot was bundled up in a blue jacket with green tights, the colour of the Canucks, and her helmet was already placed securely on her head.  “You excited, Margot?”
“Yaaa!” she squeaked out, smiling at her mom.  “Skate!”
“Yes!  We’re going skating!” Elias cooed, picking her up and placing her on his hip as he and Svea began their walk towards the ice.
Svea made sure to get her phone ready on video mode, knowing she’d been taking tons and tons of videos.  Most of the Canucks and their families were already on the ice, but Margot had had a mini meltdown when the helmet was put on, which delayed them.  Elias stepped onto the ice, keeping Margot on his hip as he skated around quickly, making her laugh hysterically.  Eventually, he carefully set her down on the ice, crouching down slightly behind her.  She began moving her feet as if she was walking, with Elias holding her hands above her head.
“Look at mommy Margot!  Say hi to mommy!” Elias said as Svea followed them, skating backwards slowly, filming a video on her phone.
“Hiiiiiii!” Margot said, smiling through the wire.  “Hiiiiii!”
“Hi baby!  Look at you skating!” Svea cooed as she continued the video.  “Look at you go!”
Margot squealed excitedly, looking back up at her dad who was smiling down at her as well.  “Skate!  Skate!”
***
“Let’s hope she knows how to blow this time and doesn’t fart again,” Brock commented as he helped Elias light the candles on Margot’s 2nd birthday cake.
“We’ll see,” Elias giggled.  “We haven’t practiced.”
Brock carried the cake so Elias could be beside Margot and Svea.  Everybody began singing happy birthday, and when he placed the cake in front of Margot, she clapped and wiggled excitedly.  Once everyone finished singing, it was time to see.  “Blow, Margot!  Blow!” Grace called out.
She took a deep breath in.  She looked like she was going to do it on her own.  And then…
Fart noise.
Everybody burst out into hysterical laughter.  “Two-for-two!” Brock screamed.
***
“Margot…Margot, look here,” Svea said as she balanced her on her knee, reading her a book since she’d requested it.  “Look here,” she pointed at the words at the bottom of the page.
Margot reached her hands out and pulled the book closer to her eyes.  Svea noticed her squinting until she brought the book really close to her face.  She put her finger above her mom’s and pointed to the animal on the page.  “Monkey!” she said.
Svea felt worry pool in the pit of her stomach.  She pushed the book back to its original distance away from Margot and turned the page.  “What’s this, Margot?” she asked again.
Margot reached out again to bring the book close to her eyes.  “Monkey in tree!”
“Good job, baby,” Svea cooed, closely watching her daughter.  Maybe she was overreacting.  Maybe Margot was just tired.  But Svea knew she was going to mention it to Elias when he got home.  “You’re so smart, baby.”
***
They were pink, naturally, because Margot got to choose and she was all about anything pink.  Elias was worried they would bother her, or she wouldn’t like them, or put up a giant fit once they were finally on and she realized she had to wear them all the time.  He’d shed a tear or two about it, worried like any father would be.  But Margot was taking to them surprisingly well.
“Look, Margot!” Margot’s optometrist smiled as she held up a mirror for Margot to see herself.  “These are your new glasses!  They’re for you!”
“PINK!” Margot exclaimed, swinging her feet excitedly as she saw herself in the mirror.
“Yes, they’re pink!”
Margot looked up at her dad; she was sitting on his lap, after all.  Her giant smile with her little teeth caused him to smile too.  “Pink, daddy!”
“What’s this, Margot?” the optometrist had already opened a book and held it open a way’s away from Margot.  “What’s this right here?” she pointed to Big Bird on the page.
“Big Bird!”

Elias groaned as he finally slipped his hard cock into Svea.  They had been spooning in bed for what felt like hours that morning, waking up well before Margot usually did.  Elias could hear Svea groan at his length filling her up from behind, and she savoured the feeling of him peppering kisses on the backs of her shoulder blades.  “Good morning, pretty girl,” Elias mumbled coarsely in her ear as he thrust in and out of her slowly.
“G’morning, baby,” Svea smiled.  She felt Elias’s hand snake up from her hip to her breast, cupping it in his hand.  “I could get used to waking up with your hard cock inside of me.”
“Mmm, be careful what you wish for, pretty girl.”
“I know exactly what I’m wishing for.”
Elias began moving his hips more, making sure he was getting exactly the right angle even though their movement were still slow and purposeful; when Svea began moaning, closing her eyes when they rolled to the back of her head, he knew what he was doing was exactly what she wanted and needed.  “I love you so fucking much,” she mumbled out, putting her hand over his that was still cupping her breast.
“I love you too,” he placed a tender kiss on her neck.  “Thank you for giving me everything I’ve ever needed.”
Svea smiled at that, biting down on her bottom lip.  “The pleasure’s been all mine.”
***
On a beautiful, hot, and sunny afternoon in Ånge, Elias couldn’t help but smile as he watched his dad hold Margot as they swam in the pool together at his parents’ house.  Margot was having the time of her life in the water – after the baby swimming classes Svea had signed her up for, Elias figured she’d be happy and in her element.  His dad couldn’t get enough of being a grandpa to a little girl, and neither could his mom.  They spoiled all of their grandchildren.  Törbjörn had even bought Margot a little bucket hat with the Swedish flag on it to wear while they were in the pool.
“Gillar du att stänka vattnet?” his dad cooed as Margot splashed the water with her hands.  “Tänk om jag gjorde det här?” he asked again, throwing her up in the air and catching her low enough so she could splash in the water.  Margot shrieked in delight, and that was enough reason for Törbjörn to continue.
Elias laughed along with his daughter.  She had the best grandpa.
***
“Look at all the pretty flowers Margot,” Svea said as she held Margot against her hip, watching Elias as he crowned her with a beautiful flower crown that Fanny helped him make.
“Woooowww,” Margot said, grabbing at it because she was so excited.
“Gentle!” Elias warned softly.  He didn’t want it to break after Fanny worked so hard on it.  “Be gentle, Margot,” he repeated as he made sure it was on snugly and properly before pulling his hands away.
“My flower!  My crown!” she smiled.  “Daddy, you have flowers too?”
Elias eyed Svea with a smirk on his face.  Svea knew he’d already crumbled.  All it took was that question from Margot.  He hadn’t exactly planned on wearing a flower crown, but he knew exactly where this was headed now.  “You want daddy to wear flowers too?”
Margot nodded her head enthusiastically.  “Mommy, daddy, me match!”
What Margot wanted; Margot got.
***
“It would be the first picture we’ve posted of her since the Christmas card photos leaked,” Elias mused as he looked at the picture on his Instagram, almost, almost ready to hit the elusive ‘post’ button.
“We didn’t release those – they were posted without our consent,” Svea clarified.  She was right.  They had no control over that and were actually really upset about it.  To this day, they still don’t know who did it.  “This would be the first photo you post of her willingly.”
Elias looked over at his wife.  “Do you think I should do it?  It’s so fucking cute,” he looked back at his phone, admiring the picture one more time.
In it, Margot was in her pink fluffy bathrobe, her wet hair combed back, and she was sitting on Elias’s chest as they were in bed together.  Elias was holding her, pursing his lips, and Margot was putting lip balm on his lips.  A classic “girl dad” photo, he thought.  And if he was going to send any message out into the world about his child and the relationship he had with her, it was going to be what was encapsulated in this picture.
Svea snuggled herself into Elias’s side, bringing her hand up and pressing ‘post’ for him.  “There,” she said, smiling.  “All done.”
***
“When she blows out the candles, she better fart again.”
“You’re gross.”
“She’s gotta go three-for-three, Petey, or else this party is a bust.”
“You have a boy – can’t you go make fart jokes with him?”
“I have a boy who has grown up with four older sisters.  He isn’t exactly one for fart jokes.”
Elias shook his head at Brock, but he couldn’t help the smirk that grew on his face.  “You finally get a boy after four girls and you can’t even make a fart joke with him,” he shook his head playfully.  “Just your luck, eh?”
Brock shook his head.  “I have five healthy, beautiful kids.  I’ll take whatever I get.”
When Elias carried the cake in and Brock began recording on his phone, everybody began singing happy birthday to Margot – a happy, energetic but cautious, giggly but quiet, exactly-like-both-her-parents’-temperaments-it-was-kind-of-scary-three year old, who every day was looking more and more like Elias’s double.  She adjusted her glasses as everyone sang to her, and clapped along too.  When it was time to blow, she did.
No fart noises.
“Noooooooo!” Brock groaned loudly.  Elias pretended like he was going to backslap him over the head.  “No fart noise!”
“It was fun while it lasted,” Svea winked at him.

“Will they be in my class, mommy?” Margot asked as she looked into the classroom sheepishly, a little shy now that she was in a new environment.  Elias and Svea had started to talk to her about school, and how – now that she was a big girl – she needed to start going to school to learn, just like how Violet, Rose, Lily, and Poppy went to school.
“Can I go to Poppy’s school?” she asked nervously one day.
Elias and Svea decided to take her there, knowing that it would make her feel more comfortable.  Knowing that Violet, Rose, Lily, and Poppy went there too put her at ease.  When they saw all the girls in the junior kindergarten class in their green plaid dresses, they could tell Margot recognized them from seeing them on the Boeser girls.
“These girls won’t be in your class, but new girls who are the same age as you will be,” Svea said.  “Do you like that?”
Margot hesitated slightly before nodding her head.  “I like new friends.”
***
“She is out cold,” Svea smiled as she lowered herself slowly and gently onto the couch, making sure not to disturb the peaceful image before her: Margot, after an exciting and fun day of shopping for her new school uniform, completely knocked out in Elias’s arms, sleeping soundly on his chest as he rubbed her back.
Svea cradled her body into Elias, too, snuggling up against him and admiring her daughter.  From the blonde hair on her head, to her pink glasses on her face, to her cute little toes Elias still loved to pretend to eat, she was perfect.  As Svea thought this, she felt Elias grab her hand between them and bring it up to his lips for a kiss, holding on to it as his thumb grazed over her skin.  “We did alright in the end, didn’t we?”
Svea smiled and nodded her head.  “We did.”
“She’s perfect.  She’s just perfect,” he said, placing the lightest of kisses atop Margot’s head.
“I was just thinking the same thing,” Svea admitted.
Elias looked over at her, craning his head down to give his wife a kiss.  “I love you more than I know how to explain.  Thank you for giving me the light in my life.”
***
“Then all around from far away across the world, he smelled good things to eat, so he gave up being king of where the wild things are,” Elias read to Margot as they cuddled together in the rocking chair in her room.  In her comfortable jammies and with her head on his chest, she was mouthing along to all the words of the book.  Elias could see her get progressively more tired as he flipped through the pages, though she kept trying to mouth along and kept trying to keep her eyes open.
When they finished, Elias put the book on her bedside table as he cradled Margot in his arms and lay her down in bed, making sure to put the covers over her just how she liked.  Still struggling to keep her eyes open, he brushed some hair out of her face.  “Daddy?” she asked in her sweet voice.
“Yes baby?”
“I love you daddy.”
Elias smiled.  “I love you too, Margot.”
“Will you read to me always?” she asked.
Elias nodded his head automatically.  “Always.”
***
“Look at her go!” Grace exclaimed as she watched Margot zoom around the ice, chasing Poppy and Dukey around as they all giggled like maniacs.  “I mean, who am I kidding?  The daughter of Elias Pettersson?  Of course she’s gonna skate like that!”
“She’s definitely a natural,” Svea smiled as her eyes followed her daughter around the ice.  Brock and Elias both skated up behind their kids and scooped them up in their arms, giving them kisses before setting them back down on the ice together.  “Do you ever think about how far we’ve all come…based on where we started when we met each other in our early twenties?”
“All the time,” Grace nodded.  “We were so young!  We were kids!  Now there’s six kids between us!”
“A little skewed on your side, though,” Svea winked.
Grace elbowed her playfully.  “We did good.”

“Margot!  Margot!” Elias called out to his daughter who was already having fun with a new friend in her classroom as they played with a xylophone together.  Other parents were in the room doing the exact same thing as he and Svea: making sure everything was okay on the first day of school.  But the longer he and Svea stood there watching her, the more they realized she didn’t need them there; that she would thrive in the classroom and not have a meltdown about being in a new place.
To her credit, Margot listened when she heard her dad call her name and got up from her seat to hop over to her parents.  “Mommy and daddy have to go now,” Elias said as he and Svea crouched down so they could by at eye-level with her.  She nodded her head in understanding.  “You listen to Mrs. Becker, okay?”
“I will.”
“Aunt Grace is going to come pick you up with Violet, Rose, Lily, and Poppy.  Remember?” Svea asked.
“Yes mommy.”
“And remember—” Svea choked up slightly, Elias putting her hand over hers.  “Mommy and daddy love you very much.”
“I love you too!” Margot said as she hugged her parents goodbye before skipping back to her friend and playing with the xylophone again.
Elias and Svea said goodbye to Mrs. Becker and held hands as they left the school building and walked back together to their car in the parking lot, silent the entire time.  When Svea looked over at Elias once they were back in the privacy of their car, she could see tears streaming down his face.  “Now you’re going to make me cry,” she said, wiping a few tears that had fallen.
“She’s so good.  I’m so proud of her,” he said, wiping his own tears with the backs of his hands.  “No meltdowns!  Just walked right in there and started making friends.  She’s so good.”
“Don’t jinx it – she might have a meltdown tomorrow,” Svea joked, trying to lighten the mood.
It garnered a smile out of Elias.  He looked at his wife and placed his hand over hers tenderly.  “I love you so much,” he mumbled, bringing her hand up to kiss it before cradling it against his chest, above his heart.  All these years later, I’ve just grown to love you more, if that’s even possible.”
“I think it is, because I grew to love you more too,” Svea said softly.  “My Elias.  Always my Elias.
He kissed her hand again.  “My moon, my stars, my Svea.”

Toxic Love Chapter 10
Tumblr media
Pairings: Steve Rogers x Reader, Bucky Barnes x Reader, Steve Rogers x Reader x Bucky Barnes
Summary: Finding out your soulmates were Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes was one thing.  But when someone from your past comes back to haunt you, you have to figure out if a relationship with two super soldiers is something you really want to pursue or if you’d rather go back to your comfortable single life.
Series Warnings:  18+, Swearing, Angst, Fluff, past mentions of rape, self-harm, attempted rape, domestic violence, stalking, death threats, possible Dark!Steve?, Steve will be an asshole a LOT in this series but I don’t know how dark it will get, explicit sexual content, mental health issues, kind of A/B/O dynamics but not really (no they are not actual wolves, more like the hierarchy), mentions of suicide, flashbacks of suicide, nightmares
A/N: There will be no taglist for this story!  I apologize in advance!
Steve ripped his hand away from your throat and he took a large step backwards, far away from you. To say you were disappointment was an understatement.  What did you do wrong?  Why was he acting like your skin had burned him?  You would give anything to feel his hands back on you.
As Bucky approached, you could feel his eyes on you, but you couldn’t stop looking at Steve.  Your eyes bore into him, pleading, begging for him to touch you again.  But it was no use.  Fear flooding throughout you.  He was going to leave you wasn’t he?
“F.R.I.D.A.Y,” Steve commanded, “Open her door.”
The door to your room opened and Steve, much gentler this time, pulled you into your room.  “You are to stay in here until I figure out what to do with you.”
As Steve left, he slammed the door shut.  Your jaw clenched as you leaped forward and to your dismay, found the door locked.
“ARGH!” you screamed, fists pounding on the door.  “FUCK YOU STEVE!  I FUCKING HATE YOU!  OPEN THE DOOR!! OPEN THE FUCKING DOOR AND LET ME OUT!”
~~~
“What the hell is happening?” Bucky asked as he and Steve made their way into the living room.  The sounds of your screaming getting quieter the farther they moved away.
Steve sat down on the couch, head in hands and elbows resting on his knees.  He didn’t even know what to think of the last ten minutes that transpired.  He felt the couch dip next to him, Bucky sitting down, worry etched in his eyes.
Steve let out a deep sigh, shaking his head as he turned to face Bucky.  “We got into a fight upstairs in the kitchen.  She had been awake all night working and didn’t even go to bed.  I scolded her.  Told her she needed to get to bed and get rest.  She flipped her shit Buck,” Steve spoke.  The anger he had was gone now, replaced with his own worry.  “She threw a glass plate at my head.”
“What?” Bucky couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“Yeah,” Steve replied, not even believing it himself.
The two of them sat there in silence for a few minutes.  “What was with your hand on her neck then?”
Again, Steve shook his head. “She did that Buck.  She put my hand on her neck.  It’s like she wasn’t herself.  There was something dark behind her eyes.  It didn’t feel right.”
“I mean, she has seemed like she’s been a bit more agitated lately.  Have you noticed that too?”
Steve nodded, agreeing with Bucky.  You had seemed more irritably and agitated over the last few days when they called you to check in with you.  But they didn’t think anything of it.
“Maybe there is something she’s not telling us,” Bucky spoke up, breaking the silence over the two men. “We can always have Stark try to look into things.”
Steve thought about it for a moment.  He wanted to trust you and preferred not to check into your background.  But at the same time, if this is something serious, he wanted to be able to help you.  He wanted you, him and Bucky to be a solid trio together.  He didn’t want any problems to come between you three.
“Yeah.  I’ll talk to Tony about it.”
~~~
The carpet was beginning to wear down as you paced back and forth in your room.  The door was still locked.  You felt like a caged lion, ready to attack.  Every few minutes you checked the door only to find it still locked. They couldn’t keep you locked in here forever, could they?  No, you wouldn’t let that happen.
You were unsure of how long you had been locked up when there came a knock at your door.
“Y/N, can we come in?” Steve asked, voice firm but no hint of anger and that only pissed you off even more.
“Fuck you Steve!” you yelled as you kicked the door, hoping he heard it.
“Y/N,” Bucky began to say but you cut him off.
“Fuck you too Bucky!”
“Hey!  What did I do?” Bucky asked, hurt in his voice.
You felt like you were spinning completely out of control.  The last time it got this bad, you were with John and it was because he took your medications from you.  He told you that you didn’t need to be on them.  Sure enough, you began to act out and John didn’t like it one bit.  When you were punished for acting out in front of him, the punishments were always physical in some way.  Is that why you were pent up more than ever?  Because John always beat the anger out of you when you acted this way?
“Just leave me alone!” you roared as tears streamed down your cheeks.  So much anger and sadness and hate was swirling inside of you and you didn’t know how to cope or deal with it.
You needed to drown your sorrows, you needed to get out of your head, you needed to feel pain.  It was in that moment, you knew what you had to do.
Marching into the bathroom, you pulled out your makeup bag from under the counter and dug through until you found silver box cutter.
Taking the blade out, you rolled your sleeve up.  It had been years since you had cut.  Because John always helped with the pain.  He was the one that gave you the pain and that always helped ease the outburst.
Placing the silver metal to your skin, you pushed down.  Blood seeped out of the cut as you dragged the blade across your skin, back and forth. Instantly you began to feel relief. Your mind was fixated on the burning pain of your wrist rather than being stuck in your head.  Blood smeared across your delicate wrist by the time you were done.  There wasn’t enough blood to be concerned about, no mass amount of blood loss or anything like that.  But it was enough.  Enough to get out of your head, even if it was briefly.
After washing off the blood, only deep red gashes were left on your skin and you pulled your sleeve back down; the razor blade going right back into your makeup bag and under the counter.
Now you were exhausted. Your bed was calling your name and you curled up into your silk sheets.  You cried yourself to sleep.
~~~
It was dark when you woke up.  You winced when you brushed your arm against your thigh; the pain a welcome feeling.
Looking at the clock, it was just after midnight.  And you weren’t feeling much better.  Sure, the pain helped with the anger, but now you just wanted to drown your feelings. And you wanted a cigarette.   Lucky for you there was a 24/7 hour liquor store a few blocks away from the tower.
Changing into a pair of dark washed skinny jeans, you put a long black and gray flannel over your long sleeved shirt and slipped on a pair of shoes.
Grabbing your credit card and I.D., you headed to the door.  Where you stopped dead in your tracks.  They had locked you in here.  Holding your breath, you turned the door knob and nearly jumped for joy at the fact that the door was now unlocked.
Walking down the hallway, you flipped off Steve’s door with your middle finger, pushed open the door to the stairs and ran like a bat out of hell.
~~~
That evening, Steve lay on his bed, staring at the ceiling.  Bucky had been called on a last minute short mission with Natasha.
Steve couldn’t comprehend what had happened to you.  Why were you acting out all of a sudden?  Was he and Bucky not giving you enough attention?  Was there something that you were hiding from them that they could possibly help you with?  He had seen the anger in your eyes.  Heard the anger in your voice.  He didn’t know you could even have that kind of anger inside of you.  From the short amount of time that he had known you, he just didn’t think it possible.  You seemed perfect.  Sure, everyone had flaws, but when he was being a total jerk to you that first night you met, you still forgave him.  Not everyone would have done that.
As he lay in bed, his mind replayed memories of him and Bucky in the past during the war.  He could understand the anger that you had, even though he didn’t know the reasoning behind it.  When him and Bucky were in the war, they had so much anger in them too.  It was because of the war.  The war did things to them.  They had been rough with women during the war because of it.  At the time, they only had each other’s marks.  They liked to share women together.  Hell, Steve had to admit it was nice getting that anger out. They never once hit the women; that wasn’t in their nature.   But god were they rough with them in bed.  He found out that some women even liked it, which honestly surprised him for the 40’s.
But that was back then. When he woke up from the ice, he had noticed he had another new mark right below Bucky’s and he was delighted. He had another soulmate out there and he’d have a chance to be happy again since Bucky was gone.  Or so he thought.  When he found out Bucky was alive and well, he was even more ecstatic. To have his best friend, his brother back and to share a woman together was a dream for them.
He hadn’t had any of that anger recently, not like he had in the war.  Until now.  Now, he and the team kept going in circles trying to find the new leader of Hydra.   But nothing was working.  And now he had you to deal with.  You acting out the way you were was making him furious.
Just then, Steve was alerted to an email.  It was from Tony.  Steve asked him if he could look into your past and Tony had come through.
He sat up and turned the lamp on, scrolling through the email Tony had sent you.  It was police files about your ex John Smith.  He kept scrolling through, reading the words at a quick glance until he came upon a video.  He clicked play.
“And how often did he hit and rape you,” the police officer who sat across from you asked.
Steve noticed how small you looked, curled in on yourself.  He could see bruises on your face, your lip split open.
“As often as he wanted to,” you replied with a soft shrug. “Mainly when I acted out though. If I did or said something he didn’t like, that’s when I would get it the worst.”
The cop spoke up.  “So he thought that beating and raping you would turn your attitude around?”
“It did.  It always did,” you whispered.
Steve jumped out of bed and marched to your door.  He wanted nothing more than to talk to you about all of this.  Right now.
“Open Y/N’s door F.R.I.D.A.Y,” Steve commanded as he waited in the hallway.
“I’m sorry Captain Rogers but I must say it is no use,” came the A.I’s voice.
Steve put his hands on his hips, looking at your door.  He didn’t want to, but he would use force to open it.  He and Bucky agreed to give you all the privacy you needed, but he really needed to talk to you.
“What do you mean F.R.I.D.A.Y?”
“Miss Y/N left her room and the building a half hour ago.”
Steve’s head snapped towards the elevator.  “With who?” he barked out as he rushed into his room and grabbed a black hoodie, pulling it over his head.
“Nobody.  She left alone.”
Steve stilled his movements. Not only had you been acting out, like a brat, a damn child and throwing a glass object at his head.  Now you had left the tower, alone, in the middle of the night.  His hands were balled into fists, his jaw clenched tight like a clamp.  In this exact moment, Steve had enough.  He punched the door to his room.  The punch went clear through the door making a gaping hole.  Steve had snapped.

You told Bucky everything, leaving nothing out. You also explained what you meant about having an “affinity” to demonic magic, because it was more than that. Much more.
From your experience in the demon realm, to your body changing and the power you could sense from the planet itself, Strange had determined that you weren’t just proficient with demon energy, it fueled your magic. Just like the Ancient One drew her power from the Dark Dimension, your powers came from the demon world.
Bucky wasn’t any happier than the first time he’d heard it, but he digested it better after hearing the details. You got the sense that in the end he wasn’t surprised, and that’s why he’d been so upset. It was everything he’d feared. Your chance of having a quiet, boring life was over, but looking back at everything, you weren’t sure you were meant for that kind of life in the first place. And it seemed that Bucky was less happy about that than you were.
Especially when your magic could potentially protect Bucky from the next Helmut Zemo. All you had to do was master an experimental ritual no one had done before.
And in the end, Bucky came around to it.
“It’s dangerous. Untested. Anything could go wrong,” Bucky said, brows furrowed. And then his face slightly softened. “But I guess all spells were like that at one point. All I ask is that we do this as safely as possible, with Strange’s supervision.”
Bucky snorted at the dubious eye you gave him.
“I may still be pissed at the guy, and I blame him for a lot of what happened, but that doesn’t mean I think he’s totally incompetent. And besides, Wong will be there, and I trust his judgement.”
So there you were, nervously waiting in Bucky’s living room for a portal to appear after he made a phone call. You were going back to the Sanctum, with Bucky this time, and together you would approach Strange again.
When you met with him in his office and once again told him the ritual you wanted to perform, Strange was no happier than the first time, either.
“You do realize it could kill you both,” he said, leaning one hip against his desk, arms folded and expression equally drawn. “Or worse.”
You didn’t have to ask what “worse” could be. You’d lived it.
“I realize there are a lot of risks,” you began slowly, not ceding ground just yet. “Which is why I won’t do it without Bucky’s consent. And I would prefer I have your approval, or at least, your supervision.”
“And if I say no, you’ll do it anyway?” Strange sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. Bucky remained silent behind you, but you could sense his support and encouragement.
“Listen.” You were going to use the logical approach and hope that Strange could see it, even if he didn’t approve. “It’s only a matter of time before someone else learns about demons, about Bucky’s existence, and tries to either kill him or use him. If it’s within my power, I’m not going to let that happen.”
Strange eyed Bucky, who stood with his own arms folded and his tail flicking back and forth, and the master wizard seemed more tense as the conversation unfolded.
“There are other ways, you know, to protect yourself from being enslaved,” Strange said, this time to Bucky.
“I’m well aware,” Bucky nearly growled. “And I would trust her with my life if it came to that, but I would also rather not be beholden to magic that HYDRA forced onto me. This…”
He glanced your way, his expression softening.
“This is the closest I’ll ever have to true freedom. It’s a gift, one I won’t toss away because it’s a risk.”
“If it works, and doesn’t kill or corrupt you both, it might not be effective. Or work the way you want it to. It could make your previous pact look like a happy arrangement,” Strange muttered unhappily.
“That’s our decision to make.” Bucky stared at the wizard evenly. “And we’ve already made it.”
Strange looked between you both, studying your expressions long and hard, before he expelled a laborious breath.
“I can see that.”
“Will you help us?” You put the question to him bluntly, knowing this wasn’t the time to be timid or mince words. “We would really appreciate it. I would really appreciate it. We could do it on our own, but…”
You focused on your hands, twisted them together so they would stop fidgeting.
“This is probably the most important decision I’ve ever made, and I don’t want to screw it up. And if I do make a mistake, I want you and Wong to be there. At the very least, for damage control.”
There was a hint of a smile and a spark of something in Strange’s eyes.
“I haven’t said yes yet.” He pushed off from the desk, smoothed the collar of his cape, and said, “Come with me.”
You exchanged a confused glance with Bucky, who only gave a shrug, so you had no choice but to follow the wizard as he left his office. You weren’t expecting him to lead you to one of the large training rooms, or to open it to the Mirror Dimension. Fractals and shards formed in the air like cracked glass, and like every time you were here, you stared in wonder.
Even Bucky’s eyes widened in awe, his arms uncrossing from his chest, and you took it from his expression that he didn’t come here very often.
For a moment, you wondered if Strange was going to have you try out the ritual in this place where you could perform complicated, dangerous spells without affecting the real world.
Instead, he turned to you and said, “I want you to open a portal for me.”
You squinted at him. Wong had purposefully left that lesson to the side, probably because nothing happened every time you equipped a sling ring, but you weren’t sure what Strange was getting at.
“You brought me to the Mirror Dimension, to form… a portal. Isn’t this a bit overkill?”
“Considering how your last fully formed portal breached the demon realm, no. This is not ‘overkill.’” Strange even said the word in air quotes, the smug bastard. Unfortunately, he also had a point.
“So, what?” You gestured at the fragments around you. “I’m able to summon a portal and you’ll let me perform the ritual?”
“I’m not going to sanction an untrained sorcerer with permission to perform experimental magic.”
“Right, because you’re such a stickler for rules and definitely didn’t open unauthorized portals into the library at the Kamar-Taj sanctum.”
Bucky snorted and smirked. Strange narrowed his eyes.
“Which is why I understand the reason these rules are in place. You’ve yet to form a portal, but once you have, you’ll have graduated into a fully-fledged sorcerer.” He paused and slightly tilted his head. “Be glad you’re not learning the way I learned, otherwise I would drop you on top of Mount Everest and leave you there.”
Bucky gave a bark of laughter this time.
“I knew it,” he said, grinning. “I knew that rumor was true.”
“Yes, well.” Strange huffed. “The Ancient One was a much gentler teacher with you than she was with me.”
“Or maybe I was the better student.” Bucky smirked even wider.
Before Strange could retort, which he was absolutely going to do from the offended expression on his face, you held out your arms between them.
“Can we play ‘Mom loved me more’ another time?”
“I wasn’t—“
“That is hardly—“
You rolled your eyes and turned away. As entertaining as this was, there was only one way to get them to shut up once they got started.
You lifted your arms in the correct starting position and tugged at the now-familiar font of power within you, forming the shape of the portal in your mind. You moved your other hand in a circular motion, and with a fiery rip you could almost feel, the air cracked and caught fire in the same movement as your hand.
An orange portal hovered before you, showing a circular view of the Manhattan skyline as seen from the rooftop.
You exhaled and looked over your shoulder.
“There. You happy?”
They both stared at you, unblinking, but Strange’s expression was the most stunned. You didn’t know why until he drew his hand out of his pocket. Within his palm was a sling ring.
Your sling ring.
You slowly glanced back to the portal, at your hands that were plain and ringless, and you closed the portal with a startled movement.
“Well,” Strange said when he’d found his voice again, “That’s certainly… interesting.”
“How did she do that?” Bucky took a step forward, as if he wanted to reach out and touch you, but he held back. You wished he hadn’t; Strange’s reaction was concerning, as were his next words.
“I haven’t the slightest idea.”
“Well… Does it at least mean it’s possible I can do the ritual?”
Strange adjusted his collar and cleared his throat, his expression still a mixture of confusion and worry.
“Among other things.”
You and Bucky glanced at each other. What the hell did that mean?
“What does that mean?” you repeated aloud, following Strange out of the Mirror Dimension as he closed it behind all three of you. “Does it mean I’m ready?”
“It means you’re closer to being ready,” the sorcerer said over his shoulder as he walked ahead. “There’s still much to do.”

Attempt number two LMAO: Sith!Obi-wan and “shut up with all that soulmate shit”from the fluff/angst/misc. prompts.
JUICY honestly ;)
note: with sith!reader who used to be part of the rebellion, and emperor sith!obi as well hehehe
“Shut up with all that soulmate shit.”
The thing about being in a Force dyad is that it’s difficult to go far without feeling like you’re missing part of yourself. Against your will, before you were even born, there was always something about your world that seemed bleak, like everything is in grey, and it’s not until you come face to face with a red lightsaber, burnt gold eyes and umber hair that you realized why.
It’s why you sleep, breathe, eat on an Imperial corvette.
You’re the other half of a Force dyad to the Emperor of the galaxy. Everyone’s heard his name—Darth Manus. The man who killed the Supreme Chancellor.
Yet, when in their private quarters, he says his real name, prefers it even: Obi-Wan Kenobi.
You don’t want to be here. You want to be out in the galaxy, exploring the Empire, but the fact is, you don’t know how you lived in the first place without him near. Despite how much the Alliance bargains, despite the demands of his council saying you’re more trouble than you’re worth, there will never be a price high enough to convince him to give you up.
There will never be anything that can persuade you to give him up either. Not even if he sent you back to the remnants of the Rebellion.
You’re not anyone else’s but his, now.
The door slides open and you raise your head, turning to look over your shoulder just enough to see Obi-Wan enter, removing the black helmet he wears. Black robes fall to the floor and he crawls into bed beside you, kissing the shell of your ear and you smile.
“Hello, my dear,” he whispers, the scratch of his beard against your neck sending shivers down your spine. “Cause trouble lately?”
“Not enough,” you reply and he chuckles, finger curling against your cheek. He tears himself away a moment later, retreating to the fresher in their room and you sit up. The maroon silk slides down your body and you spot the armour laying at the door, the curve of Obi-Wan’s back just visible in the pale light streaming through the door. It’s the only source of illumination anywhere besides the wall of glass beside you showcasing the galaxy, but in space, stars can only bring so much light, if any at all.
Admiring him, you can’t help the faint smile begging to grow on your face as he runs his hands over his face, rakes his floppy hair back to reveal the scar that’s gouged into his cheek and twists his lip into a permanent scowl. It slashes his beard, and you get up, getting the urge to touch it again.
He senses your naked body approaching and he turns just in time for your hand to find his cheek and it’s not long before he’s cupping your jaw, pulling you into a kiss. Your body arches against his, pressing against every inch of him and your hands seek purchase in his hair while his other hand grabas your hip, holding you flush against him.
“Every day, I thank the Maker he brought you to me,” he whispers and your eyes flutter shut as he tilts your head up, kissing down your neck, finding your pulsepoint and murmuring sweet nothings against the skin there. “That we were connected and that I found you.” Tugging his head up, a strange fury fills you and their lips clash in a kiss that burns cold in their veins and your lungs cramp at the force behind it but you don’t concede at the greed festering between them.
“Shut up with all that soulmate shit,” you hiss, your fingers tightening in his hair and his lips part as you gorge yourself on his kiss. “I chose to love you, and you I. There was no destiny—only choice. Understand me?” His lips seeking, he nods and mumbles some incoherent response that you don’t care about as his hand on your hip traces up, spans across your ribcage. His fingers dig into you dully and you push him into the counter. Eyes finding his icily, you take hold of his jaw as his hand on your neck trails down your shoulder, squeezing gently. “If I lose you, they won’t live to regret taking you away from me. Do you understand me? That love is no one else but our own’s making.”
“If something happens to you, I’d set the galaxy aflame,” he murmurs. Your fingers flutter over his scar and his eyes slide shut. “It’s hardly the time for commitment to anything else, but my devotion to you will always take place above anyone. Anything.” You sweep hair out of his eyes as they open a sliver and he gives you a soft smile of a gentler man. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.” He reaches to interlace their fingers and you pull back. Obi-Wan grabs hold of your other hand and they stand there for a moment in the washed artificial light before you look down.
“I have to wash all this grime off and return to the war room.”
“I understand.” The words come out quiet and a finger teases your chin as he kisses your hairline before he reaches to turn on the shower and you watch him, the hollowness in your chest aching at the scars that are still fading from his body. Tiny marks, large imprints of his enemies attempts on his life.
Every day you hope he comes back to you.
Every day he does.
Still, that irrational fear that some day someone of the past will come back, slice apart what they have.
It won’t happen.
You will never let it happen.
join my 4k celebration!

Thot obiwan... just him being a thot and happy (it’s what he deserves) pls no obitine lol
(went a poly route with this cause i wasn't sure how to write thot!obi without making myself uncomfortable, so instead have poly obi and his seven partners! it’s like scott pilgrim except obi’s still dating them all. a mix of triads and Vs here! because i’m soft for big polycules
couldn’t get to more detail in such a short fill, but all ships are tagged if there’s any confusion! (ノ*´◡`) i will absolutely be returning to poly!Obi in the future.)
Rex promptly, and calmly, chokes on his first sip of tea.
Cody sighs, because he isn't exactly clear on the details either. "Yes, all of them. "
  "Is that... Is that... allowed?"
"High General Ti is also on the council, it must be." The last twenty five hours since rescuing his general and the rest of Ghost Company from Ventress’ latest plot have been rather confusing for Cody, from Obi-Wan’s debrief to the holocall with the council, to Obi-Wan’s four other holocalls that Cody isn't entirely sure he was meant to see. He supposes he should feel grateful that Senator Organa had recently returned to Alderaan, or it could have been more.
Rex's eyes go distant as he does the math, a couple of brothers ducking around them where they've stopped in the middle of the hall. "That's... five people, Cody."
"Yes, Rex, I can count." He grabs Rex's elbow to start steering him towards the hangar again, where they’re supposed to be greeting some new Shinies in less than five minutes.
"But what about Ventress? And isn't General Fisto—"
"With Bly and General Secura? Yes. As for Ventress, as far as I can tell, the General... is simply like that with everyone he fights." It certainly calls into question quite a few "interactions" Cody has witnessed in his two years at Obi-Wan’s side, anyways. Fett's left sheb, does he have to worry about Ohnaka?
For all that Rex had been CC track just by being smart, he doesn't seem any more sure of the situation than Cody is. "Fett's left sheb," he agrees, bewilderedly tossing his flimsi cup of tea into a waste receptacle without actually having drunk any. "Bly never said anything."
Cody grunts and thumbs the edge of the helmet in his hands. "He isn't involved with General Kenobi."
"Cody, brother, that doesn't make sense." He punctuates the notion with a wild swing of his hand, narrowly missing a tech clone, who takes one look at the two of them and decides he isn't going to try and go toe-to-toe with two war heroes. "Where did you hear this? If it was Fives, you should know by now–”
“The General told me himself.” Sort of, anyways — Obi-Wan is rarely blind to his surroundings, and he had not dismissed Cody after the debrief with the council, so he must have meant for him to see. Why he had been meant to see is still up for debate, especially when Cody had waited all of four hours before telling Rex; no secrets among brothers, or what have you.
“I suppose what the generals do in their spare time is their business,” Rex mutters. “And it’s not as if the Jedi are anything the longnecks said they were, anyways. But Kote...”
He could do without the pitying look Rex gives him. “As you said: it’s their business. It wasn’t, and isn’t, any of mine what the General does off the field.”
“If you say so, brother.” He pats Cody’s shoulder, far gentler than the situation perhaps warrants. “What a way to find out, though; I don’t know what I’d do if I knew Skywalker was romancing around with half the council.”
Cody sort of wishes Waxer hadn’t tossed out the rotgut Wooley’s had cooked up the last time they were planetside. “I won’t tell you about Senator Amidala and Senator Mothma, then,” he sighs, just to see Rex turn as white as Shiny armour.
-
Senator Organa breaks away from the little party that had greeted The Negotiator in the Temple hangar and approaches Cody with a smile perhaps even kinder than his general’s.
“Welcome back to Coruscant, Commander,” he says pleasantly, folding his arms behind his back and settling next to Cody to observe General Ti fuss over Obi-Wan’s injuries.
  “Thank you, sir.”
“I think I can speak for everyone,” Organa nods to Obi-Wan’s entourage, “when I say we are indebted to you yet again.”
Cody blinks at him, thankful he can hide his incredulity inside his bucket. “Sir?”
Turning his smile back to Cody, Organa puts a hand on his shoulder not unlike a brother would. “None of our positions allow us to watch his back, and certainly not as well as you do. I’m sure you can understand our worry.”
“I suppose so, sir,” Cody says carefully, not convinced that Organa isn’t trying to catch him up in a lie. “If I may, sir,” Organa waves for him to continue, “I’m not entirely sure I know what we’re talking about.”
“Hm, perhaps that’s fair,” Organa chuckles. “I apologise for having to speak so mysteriously, but one can never be too careful. I merely meant to thank you, and to encourage you to talk to him; for all that the Jedi are not hierarchical, he worries about his position above you. And Obi-Wan is no blushing Alqull, but he would not impose himself on you.”
  “... Sir.”
“Yes, yes, more mystery. Just talk to him.” Organa leaves him with one last smile and a pat on the shoulder, and Cody wonders if Waxer had spiked his caf that morning.
-
The 212th had lost enough brothers in their last entanglement with Ventress that they return to Kamino immediately after Coruscant, General Ti all too happy to join them aboard The Negotiator; the brothers are delighted to learn she prefers to stand against their general’s back, lekku and arms absolutely dwarfing him, and Obi-Wan lets her.
They keep separate quarters, though Cody isn’t sure how much of it is for keeping up appearances.
As high strung as he is after his conversation with Senator Organa, Cody is relieved when they finally dock in Tipoca City and he can hand babysitting the 212th over to Waxer. He loves his men, truly, but being cooped up with them for a tenday in hyperspace is far from his favourite pastime.
When Cody joins Obi-Wan for their trek to the training levels, Obi-Wan takes one look at his harried expression and laughs — Cody would like to believe it’s because he knows what Cody’s thinking, rather than any sort of Jedi-mind-reading-nonsense.
Taun We meets them on the way, prattling about the “improvements” they’ve made since the last batch, and Cody pays attention because he has to, but the general’s little smile aimed in Cody’s direction does nothing to help him concentrate.
Alpha-17 greets them as soon as Taun We opens the door to one of the training rooms, and Cody finds he’d actually missed the old hardass; it isn’t every brother that can call High General Yoda a toad to his face and get away with it, just by virtue of being Alpha-17.
And then Alpha sees Obi-Wan and actually smiles, and Cody updates his mental counter to six. He had forgotten how much time Alpha had spent with the 212th before Cody was assigned, forgotten that it was Alpha with Obi-Wan when Ventress first kidnapped him; perhaps the holodramas are right, that shared trauma is a simple step away from romance.
Kriff, he could have gone his whole life not picturing Alpha trying to romance absolutely anyone.
-
“You haven’t asked,” Obi-Wan observes, hands folded under his chin across the desk from Cody. The teapot between them steams gently, filling Obi-Wan’s quarters with a haze of shiso and ginger that settles Cody’s nerves rather than stokes them.
  “Sir?”
“Come now, Cody: we’ve worked together far too long for that.”
And Cody snorts a laugh, even as he turns back to the datapad in his hands. “I did not think it my business, sir.”
“Hm, and your conversation with Bail?”
Cody glances up. “Are you laughing at me, sir?”
The soft smile from Kamino is back on his general’s lips, making Cody all too aware of his helmet on the other side of the room. “Perhaps a little, Commander – your play for stoicism is as amusing as always.
“I don’t know what you refer to, General, I did not lie: I have not asked because it is not my business, and if there was more to discuss, I knew you would bring it up again.” With an inhaled sigh, Cody sets his datapad back on the desk and faces Obi-Wan properly, because he isn’t a cadet, and he isn’t what-are-emotions-what-is-responsibility Skywalker. “Clearly you have more to discuss.”
“Bah, you make it sound like a chore, Kote.”
He raises a brow. “When I was assigned to the 212th, General Vos warned me of your politician-speak, sir. Any conversation with you is a chore.”
Obi-Wan startles out a laugh, eyes crinkling at the corners as if just to remind him that there are lines on his face from more than just war. “Captain Rex tells me you get that snark from Alpha, but I must say I think it is a family trait.” Smiling behind his fingers, Obi-Wan tilts his head as if Cody were an especially endearing puzzle. “I’m afraid I don’t quite know how to navigate this conversation, my friend: I don’t believe I was the instigator of any in the past.”
“More politician-speak,” Cody chides without heat, but knows what he means anyways. “And you thought I would instigate, if you left it long enough?”
“Well, I hope I’ve created an environment where you and your brothers may speak your minds–”
“General,” Cody interrupts boldly, and Obi-Wan just keeps smiling at him, “I have it on good authority that none of my brothers have been the one to broach this subject first.”
“Mhm,” he chuckles, “Yes, I did hear about Commander Bly and Kit, and about Commander Choke with the 202nd.” Poor Shiny, Cody thinks, fresh out of ARC training when she met her general for the first time; the other battalions hadn’t stopped laughing about it for months.
“Sir, the freedom the Jedi have given us undermined nearly everything the longnecks brought us up to believe; if you are unsure of what to say, I’m hardly going to be more prepared.”
“Hm, perhaps we ought to be blunt with each other, then? Avoid the politician-speak entirely?”
“Yes, perhaps that would be better, sir.”
“Then, Kote, I would very much like to kiss you.”
“Only if you’ve brushed your teeth since you kissed Alpha.”
Obi-Wan throws his head back and laughs.

Chapter Seventeen
Lily looked at you like you had gone mad – and perhaps you had – as she nervously fiddled with the napkin on her lap, her green eyes were ablaze with worry. Your heart pounded in your chest, you had asked Sirius to meet you by The Whomping Willow after breakfast because you had to talk to him about something important. You could hear the blood pounding in your own ears, so loud that drowned out the loud noise of The Great Hall.
All of your friends thought that you had gone mad and to be quite honest, you couldn’t blame them but you had to do this. No matter what the cost, it was something that had to be done. Lily sighed as she put her piece of buttered toast down and she narrowed her eyes at you.
“Are you sure about this, Y/N? What if things go sour, won’t you regret it?”
It had been something that you had been going over repeatedly in your head, you had weighed up all the pros and cons, and you were certain that this was what you wanted, “I’ve thought about it long and hard, Lils. Even if it goes wrong, I won’t regret it. If I don’t do this it will kill me with the not knowing,” you forced a nervous smile as you checked your watch, “I should get going.”
Lily nodded as she gave you a tight hug, “good luck Y/N, and be careful,” you smiled at Lily before you quickly walked into The Entrance Hall, bumping into Regulus in the process.
“Hi, Y/N, where are you running off to so early?” he teased and you smiled up at him guiltily, feeling completely awful.
“Nowhere in particular,” you lied before getting an idea, Regulus was such a nice boy and you hated what you were doing to him. What you were going to do to him. You cupped his cheek and you stood up on your tiptoes to kiss him full on the lips. He hesitated slightly before he wrapped a hand in your hair and he kissed you back. The swipe of his tongue was far gentler than Sirius’ but you preferred Sirius’ fiery hot kisses, and with that thought you pulled away.
Regulus’ eyes were glazed over and his lips were slightly swollen and he licked them nervously, “what was that for?” he chuckled breathlessly, “I’m not complaining but it was just….unexpected.”
You merely smiled at the handsome boy as you kissed his cheek softly. What else could you do? “Goodbye Regulus,” you whispered, smiling at him before walking out onto the grounds.
Sirius was already waiting for you, looking effortlessly gorgeous with his long curly hair blowing in the wind and you longed to run your fingers through it. He was wearing his favourite dragon hide jacket that made him look like the lead singer from some muggle punk band. Sirius grinned cheekily at you as you approached him but you noticed that it didn’t reach his eyes or make them crinkle.
“We need to talk,” you both said it at the same time. Sirius chuckled as he cupped your chin between two long fingers and he pressed a lingering kiss to your lips, “ladies first,” he smiled and you almost melted on the spot, as cliché as that sounded.
You took a deep breath, gaining your courage as you wrapped your arms around his neck, toying with the ends of his hair, “these past couple of months have been amazing with you, with you I feel like me. The me that I want to be. But, being with you in secret isn’t enough, I know that it was my idea but it’s not enough anymore. I want to be with you, completely and utterly, let’s run away together, forget about everything and just go. I don’t want to marry your brother, I’ll tell everybody that the wedding is off; all I want to do is be with you. I love you Sirius.”
Sirius’ eyes widened and for a split second you saw the vulnerability in his eyes before they turned uncharacteristically hard as he moved away from you, “no, don’t do that. Don’t call off the wedding, Y/N you should go through with it, just like you always planned to.”
“Why?” you whispered, your heart was suddenly filled with dread, you didn’t like where this was going. You had told him you loved him and he hadn’t said it back.
“Because this is wrong, us being together,” those were the words that sent a bullet straight to your heart and you sucked in a long and shaky breath, “you’re engaged to my brother, my little brother and we’re sneaking around behind his back. Don’t you see? I’m supposed to look out for him, not betray him.”
Tears filled your eyes, you wished that they wouldn’t. You had had the courage to tell him that you loved him. How could he break up with you and throw it back in your face like that?
“What are you saying?” you sniffled, wiping your eyes with the sleeve of your robes.
“I’m saying that this needs to come to an end, this thing between us. I mean we only agreed that this would be temporary right?”
You scoffed as you shook your head, you couldn’t believe the absolute drivel that was spewing from his mouth, “yeah until it wasn’t! Don’t forget, it was you who wanted to start all this in the first place!”
Sirius shrugged and he looked exactly like boy he had always been, before you let him into your heart, you couldn’t believe that you actually thought there was a different side to him, he’d always be the same. You had been such an idiot, “It’s not fair on Regulus, I don’t want a relationship that’s built on lies,” like a coward he refused to look you in the eye.
“Well, what about me?” the tears were falling freely now but you didn’t care. You just didn’t understand why he was saying this to you. Did he want you to hate him?
“You’re a girl Y/N, there are plenty of those at Hogwarts and I’ve been neglecting them, you belong with my brother, he actually really cares about you. Why don’t you run on back to him?”
Fury replaced your sadness like a fire, where did he get the nerve to speak to you like that? Before you could stop yourself, you reached out and slapped him across the face. What was worse was the fact that you didn’t even feel bad. Sirius looked at you completely shocked as he rubbed his cheek. You were so angry that you didn’t even see the hurt in his eyes, “fuck you Sirius, you’re always going to be alone and I feel sorry for you,” he winced at your words but you didn’t care.
You flounced away in a flurry of tears, stomping through the grass as salty tears ran over your cheeks and lips. You ran to the common room and up to the dormitories so fast that you were sure that it must have been a world record. You cocooned yourself beneath the duvet and didn’t move until Lily came into the room and cautiously stroked your hair just like a mother would as she sat on the edge of your bed.
“What happened sweetie?” she asked and you sniffled the skin beneath your eyes were sore from crying but it seemed like you had cried out all your tears.
“I don’t want to talk about it, is that okay?” you mumbled, peeking up at her from beneath the duvet.
She nodded understandingly as she kissed your forehead, smoothing your hair back, “of course that’s okay angel, try and get some sleep. I’m sure that this whole situation will look much better after a good sleep. I’ll be right here until you fall asleep.”
You nodded, you hated feeling this way but you supposed that you ought to feel this way after Sirius had been a complete arsehole. You were so grateful that you had an amazing friend like Lily and true to her word; she stayed with you until you fell asleep.
Lily sighed as she walked down the steps and sat next to James on the couch, resting her head against one of his broad shoulders, she was so worried about you.
“How is she?” James asked as he closed the book he was reading.
Lily bit her bottom lip as she drew circles into her boyfriend’s chest, “she looks absolutely heartbroken James and she won’t tell me what’s wrong. For the first time, where Y/N is concerned, I don’t know what to do.”
“Oh Lily-flower,” James sighed as he pulled her into his chest tighter, kissing the top of her head, “I’m sure that everything will work itself out in the end. But I don’t think it’s our place to interfere even if they are our best friends. Though, Sirius did look very upset when I saw him before.”
“What are we going to do James?” Lily sighed as tears filled her eyes, it seemed hopeless.
——————
It had been about three weeks since Sirius had called things off with Y/N and it was killing him more every day. Y/N had told him that she loved him and all he wanted to do was grab the beautiful girl and kiss her, and tell her that he loved her too. But he couldn’t, he couldn’t hurt his little brother, not when he knew that Regulus loved her too.
Y/N had recently been walking down the corridor hand in hand with Regulus and there was an easy beautiful smile on her face. They were official now, they were officially going out. Sirius was hiding his true feelings by doing what he did best, and that was sleeping with random girls. Remus had tried to talk him out of it but it didn’t work, somehow the random girls made Sirius feel better, he just pretended that they were Y/N.
He currently had a Ravenclaw girl named Maya backed into the stone wall, he was shamelessly flirting with her and she seemed to be really into it, “Sirius Orion Black! We need to talk!” an angry voice filled the corridor and when Sirius turned around he discovered that it was Lily and he’d never seen her so angry. Maya giggled nervously and kissed his cheek before sauntering off down the hallway.
Lily stomped towards him and he almost cowered away, “we need to talk about Y/N and what went down between the two of you,” her cheeks were red and she placed her hands on her hips.
Sirius sighed as he dragged a hand through his mane of tangled hair, he didn’t want to talk about Y/N. It hurt too much, “I don’t want to talk about it,” Sirius mumbled and Lily tossed her head angrily.
“I don’t care Sirius! Y/N is my best friend and no matter how much I hate to admit it, you’re my friend too and you’ve both been miserable for weeks. Now are you going to tell me what happened or do I have to jinx it out of you?”
Sirius chuckled a little at Lily’s fire and he suddenly felt his eyes go misty, Lily’s face softened ever so slightly, “she told me that she loved me and she told me that she wanted to be with me and I broke up with her,” he sniffed, rubbing the heel of his hand against his eyes.
A muscle fluttered in Lily’s jaw and her nostrils flared, “why? Why would you do that? That is so selfish Sirius! You’ve successfully ruined both of your lives!”
“Merlin, Lily! I know, I wasn’t planning on ending it but then I found out that Regulus is in love with her and he’s my baby brother. I can’t hurt him; I’m always supposed to look out for him. I love Y/N, I love her so much that it’s hard to breath and every time I see her, it’s like I’m looking at my future, but that’s not right. She’s Regulus’ future and he deserves her.”
“Oh Sirius,” she sighed and placed a gentle hand on his arm, it was such a nice change of pace, normally they were at each other’s throats.
“Things are how they should be,” Sirius shrugged as he felt tears prick at his eyes, “the prodigal son gets the beautiful and amazing woman. While the family disappointment is destined to be alone, slaking his lust on random women. I just didn’t expect it to hurt so much.”
Lily’s eyes filled with tears and she sniffled before lunging forward and pulling Sirius into a hug. Sirius let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding in as he wrapped his arms around Lily and hugged her back. He let himself be hugged; he didn’t know how much he needed it. With his friend’s support he knew that he would somehow get through this.

Tumblr media
As they approached the mansion, the first thing (Y/n) noticed was the large golden gates with two large lion statues seeming to guard it, as they neared the main entrance (Y/n) also noticed the large fountain surrounded by a small garden, obviously for decorative purposes, (Y/n) also heard the sound of small rocks being crunched by the wheels of his sports car, those tiny decorative rocks which for some reason people found pleasing, but (Y/n) absolutely hated them, why would anyone want that, especially in front of the house, you couldn’t even take a peaceful walk without needing to put on a pair of proper shoes, if she wasn’t aware of the situation she was in, she would have commented on it, but instead she kept quiet.
Max parks his car near the main entrance, cutting the engine and pulling the key from the ignition, he glances at (Y/n) and saw her staring at her hands that were on her lap, he climbs out the car and made his way around to the passenger’s side and opens the door for her, she could hear the crunching sound from the rocks underneath his shoes as he moved, she stares up at him before slowly stepping out the car, the place was large with cream coloured walls, it wasn’t anything that she expected it to be, surprisingly, it was pleasing to look at, apart from the rocks scattered on the ground.
“Welcome to my house,” Max says while closing the door to the sports car, he couldn’t exactly call it home, so instead, he called it a house, although it was anything but the size of a house, a home should have a warm feeling, something the mansion didn’t have, a home should feel welcoming, which most of the time, the mansion didn’t feel very welcoming, he guides her to the front door and allows her to enter first, she lets out a relieved sigh after hearing and feeling unpleasantness from the rocks outside, Max looks at her for a moment as he closed the front door. “This way.” He guides her down a long hallway, the walls were once again a light colour instead of a dark colour she had been expecting, as they neared his office, she could hear chatter coming from a room, she didn’t understand the language, but she was certain that it was French, Max pushes the door open, revealing the three men from the restaurant, Albon, Galsy and Kvyat, talking or more discussing something, corner clear on their faces.
“I’m here,” Max states as he stared at them. “I’ll be in my office, don’t disturb us unless it’s important.” Gasly wanted to say something, only for Albon to stop him, muttering something to him, Max closed the door and continued leading (Y/n) to his office, dark wood, black leather couches, a large wooden desk as well as bookshelves decorated his office, (Y/n) had no doubt that the bookshelves were just there for show, to hide weapons or even a secret room, she was certain about it when she had spotted the scraped on the floor near them.
Tumblr media
Fear, that was the only thing (Y/n) could feel as she sits on one of the black leathered couches in the spacious office, Max sat on the opposite couch across from her, he had just finished explaining what he was and what he does for a living, even giving her the names of each business and building he owned, everything slowly sinks in, but she refused to show it, she didn’t want him to see how scared she was, but she was sure he could see it, possibly even sense it.
“Do you have any questions?” Max asks in a soft sincere tone, (Y/n) shakes her head, unsure what she could ask and which questions could get into a lot more trouble or worse, her gaze falls onto the floor, finding it more interesting than the shelf behind Max. “(Y/n), I would never hurt you.” He sounded so convincing, but how could she believe him? “If I wanted to bring any harm to you, I would have done so a long time ago.” He stood from his seat causing (Y/n) to shiver with fear in her seat, Max quickly picked up on it. “(Y/n)…” Hurt evident in his voice, but before he could continue, somebody knocked on the large wooden doors, interrupting him, (Y/n)’s eyes wide as she looks up from the ground, her eyes displaying the fear she felt. “I told them not to disturb us.” Max strides towards the door and pulls it open, glaring at whoever stood on the other side of it. “If I remember correctly, I said don’t disturb us.”
“And I am deeply sorry to disturb, Sir, but we thought this could be important,” Pierre says before hosing something to Max on a tablet, causing him to snatch the device from Pierre’s hand as anger bubbles inside him, a picture of (Y/n) was attached in an email. “She is in danger, and so are we.” Pierre tried to say it as quietly as possible, but failed, (Y/n) had heard him. “Butler’s hang knows about her, and they are threatening her if you do not meet the demands they ask for.”
“How did they find out?” Max questions, how had he not noticed? How did nobody notice that butler had been following them?
“We're not sure yet, but we believe he had seen her with you at some point, we just don’t know where,” Pierre explains, (Y/n) licks her lips, her heart pounding in her ears, but she needed to ask.
“Wh—Who’s Butler?” (Y/n) asks, her voice faltering for a second, Max turns to face her and saw her standing from the couch, nervously fiddling with her fingers, he quickly learned that she did that when she was nervous.
“A nobody.” Max states. “Nothing but a piece of scum.” His voice hard and cold, causing her to take a small step back, afraid. “You shouldn’t worry yourself over this lowlife, he’s a nobody.” His gentler this time around, he looks back at Pierre. “Thank you, Pierre, we will have a meeting later, let everyone know.” Pierre nods his head and glanced at (Y/n) before leaving the office, Max closes his door as he turns the tablets off, how was he going to explain to (Y/n) that her life was in danger, and he couldn’t, no he wouldn’t let her eave tonight.
“He said, she’s in danger.” (Y/n)’s soft voice says from behind Max, she already knew what was coming. “Am I in danger?” Max turns around to face her a takes a step towards her but quickly halts when he saw her tense.
“I won’t let anything happen to you, (Y/n),” Max says. “I won’t let that piece of scum come near you.” (Y/n) slowly nods her head, her eyes looking everywhere but at him, her eyes finally fall back to the floor, a sigh leaving her lips.
“I can’t go home tonight, am I right?” (Y/n) asks, already knowing the answer to her question, but she had to ask.
“I would rather you don’t,” Max says. “Not with somebody from my world knowing about your existence.” But what he said next surprised her, she was sure that he wasn’t going to let her go home. “But I am a man of my word if you wish to go…” He trails off, he didn’t want her to leave. “I won’t stop you.” He would rather have her stay there, where he knew she would be safe, (Y/n)’s mind swirled with thoughts, what could be waiting for her at her apartment? Would she even make it back to her apartment? As much as she wanted to leave, she didn’t want to die, she preferred living.
“I uh…” (Y/n) begins, only to stop and clear her throat, Max was right, he’s never hurt her before, why would he now? She needed to think about her safety for a second, so when the words left her mouth, Max couldn’t believe it. “Can I uh, stay here?” Her voice barely above a whisper, she was still scared of the man standing a few feet away from her, but he might just be her safest option, the safest option. “Just until you’ve caught this Butler person.”
“Yes, of course,” Max says. “I’d rather have you stay here, knowing that you’re safe rather than let you stay on your own.” A glint of hope in his eyes, perhaps if they could spend some more time together she might see that he is still the same person before she knew the truth. “I’ll have Russell prepare the guest bedroom for you.”

Atsumu, Akaashi, and Iwaizumi w/ a Kindergarten Teacher S/O
Atsumu, Akaashi, and Iwaizumi x reader - headcanons
request: “i just read your fic ab the reader being a kindergarten teacher and i LOVED IT. do you think we can get another one but with atsumu, akaashi, and iwa? 🥺 I LOVE YOUU AND YOUR WRITING AHHH”
a/n: ahh my laptop has my asks jacked up rn, so sorry @parkersvibes !! but i had the exact request copied down! this is a part 2 to this post :)) really hope you like it and thank u for being so uber sweet, i love this hc💕💕
warnings: none!
wc: 1040
—-
Atsumu:
okay please don’t be surprised by this - Atsumu doesn’t exactly like kids
he’s currently dealing w/ an ongoing children’s volleyball introductory camp that his team was forced to run and he is horrified
ends up making several of them cry, which totally turned him off to the whole “kids” thing
however, he also had the chance to meet you at that camp
he noticed how gentle you were around them, helping them up when they fell, praising them for their “hard work”
he lacked that softness. the comforting, encouraging kind…
so before he even realizes it, he’s walked up to you and started flirting (it’s second nature for this boy at this point)
“What’s a cutie like you...” He’ll look you up and down, “doin’ round here?” He tilts his head, a smirk forming on his lips
“I dunno? Maybe I’m here to cheer up all the crying kids you keep sending to me?” You reply sassily
you’re just... annoyed? the stupid face he’s making after messing with these poor kids is pissing you off
Atsumu wasn’t expecting any sass from you, but since then he’s been pining after you at every break and scheming for new ways to catch your attention
it turns out, you’re the kindergarten teacher for a majority of the little one’s attending and you signed up to chaperone and support them over the next couple of weeks
like, he has no capacity for their complaints and misunderstandings of a sport since he’s been playing professionally for years now
you’re officially an angel in his eyes
not only are you drop-dead gorgeous, but you can also #1 understand what they’re saying?? And #2 you genuinely care about them, their feelings (trivial or not,) and their experience at the camp
he’ll definitely ask you out after the camp is over
you turn him down twice lmao
but the third time!! he doesn’t use any lines or sensual approaches, he’s just chill about it
he’ll ask if you want to go roller skating… so you’re finally just like
“What the hell, why not.”
i mean he is cute and funny, so what could go wrong?
he ended up acknowledging that he sucks at dealing with kids and that he’d try to be gentler around them…
like if he’s actually willing to work on being “okay” with kids, that really means something, bc wow they bother him sometimes
he just adores you, bby
Akaashi:
i imagine that he’d also be a kindergarten teacher at your school
he was quiet for a long time, preferring to observe you and his new coworkers over time, but over the years y’all have gotten super close
there’s now a daily rhythm between you two:
you both meet up in the morning and put on a pot of coffee in the breakroom
he’ll meet your tired eyes with his own. the dark circles make it apparent that y’all are still waking up
you’ll send each other knowing, goofy smiles bc your sleep schedules are so wrecked right now, especially since it’s almost time for the holidays
the schools required art projects are getting out of hand and all the teachers are kinda pissed about it
but instead of complaining, Akaashi will suggest you both go shopping for materials and plan ideas together
it seems like a perfectly normal suggestion, bc you’re teachers and this would be more “efficient”, right? totally not an excuse to hangout w/ you
you’re in for such a treat
he comes to pick you up that Saturday, a coffee ready for you in his hand (he remembered the exact way you make it in the classroom)
also, he’s got this great scarf and jacket combination going on (like this: here)
sorry but not really, this totally turns into a date and you both completely forget about the supplies you were supposed to buy
like, yeah you’ll make it to the store, but he’ll ask you if you’re hungry (which you are) and suddenly he’s taking you to the ramen shop you mentioned weeks ago while on your lunch break
at some point, he’ll have you laughing about some story about a kid from class who keeps acting up
you’ll end up falling out of your chair from laughing so hard and he’ll start laughing at you
while you’re both still snickering, he crouches down to the ground and asks you to this with him again next Saturday
you’re so down (literally)
y’all are the cutest teacher couple. ever.
Iwaizumi:
i see Iwa as being a young, single dad in this situation ✨✨✨
you first meet at the beginning of the school year for a parent-teacher conference and it actually goes so smoothly
he brings his adorable baby girl (your new student), her hair in pigtails, and she’s grabbing onto daddy Iwaizumi’s leg
you first introduce yourself to the girl and then give Iwa a bright smile
i mean, as a teacher, you do your best to be professional and polite, but you can’t help but ask him about himself and crack a few jokes
he and his daughter deem you precious, immediately.
Iwaizumi is so protective of his shy, little girl, but he finds himself very comfortable with letting you teach and watch over her
he definitely finds you on facebook when he gets home and realizes y’all have mutual friends
so instead of just adding you as a friend, like a normal person, he decides to message your mutuals and devise something to meet you in person
what can I say? the dude hasn’t been in the dating field for awhile, so he’s not sure what he’s doing right now
basically you get set up for a one sided blind date (oop)
you find yourself waiting at an ice cream shop for a guy with short, dark-brown hair, an athletic build, and gorgeous brown eyes
but what they didn’t tell you was that he would be bringing a little someone along with him
at first, you just see his little girl waving to you
you stand up, giving her a big hug when she runs up to you
then you look up
oh… OH
Iwaizumi matches that description to a T.
y’all spend the rest of the day skipping (mostly just Iwa’s daughter though) around town and holding hands
so yeah, you’re dating your kindergarten student’s father now
and he’s really sweet and really hot

Quotes about Kaz Brekker:
Every act of violence was deliberate, and every favor came with enough strings attached to stage a puppy show.
The boy called Dirtyhands didn’t need a reason any more than he needed permission.
He was a collection of hard lines and tailored edges.
“Who’d deny a poor cripple his cane?” “If the cripple is you, then any man with sense.”
“I’m a business man,” he’d told her. “No more, no less.” “You’re a thief, Kaz.” “Isn’t that what I just said?”
“I’m not here for a taste. You want a war, I’ll make sure you eat your fill.”
The boy he’d been talking to had been cocky, reckless, easily amused, but not frightening—not really. Now the monster was here, dead-eyed and unafraid. Kaz Brekker was gone, and Dirtyhands had come to see the rough work done.
“You’ll get what’s coming to you one day, Brekker.” “I will,” said Kaz, “if there’s any justice in the world. And we all know how likely that is.”
“Well I’m the kind of bastard they only manufacture in the Barrel.”
Inej was always trying to wring little bits of decency from him. “When everyone knows you’re a monster, you needn’t waste time doing every monstrous thing.”
“Greed is your god, Kaz.” He almost laughed at that. “No, Inej. Greed bows to me. It is my servant and my lever.” “And what god do you serve, then?” “Whichever will grant me good fortune.”
“What’s the difference wagering at the Crow Club and speculating on the floor of the Exchange?” “One is theft and the other is commerce.” “When a man loses his money, he may have trouble telling them apart.”
“You’re a blackmailer—“. “I broker information.” “A con artist—“. “I create opportunity.” “A bawd and a murderer—“. “I don’t run whores, and I kill for a cause.”
“You see, every man is a safe, a vault of secrets and longings. Now, there are those that take the brute’s way, but I prefer a gentler approach—the right pressure applied at the right moment, in the right place. It’s a delicate thing.”
“I’m sure you’ve heard the stories.” “Each more grotesque than the last.” Brekker’s hands were stained with blood. Brekker’s hands were covered in scars. Brekker had claws and not fingers because he was part demon. Brekker’s touch burned like brimstone—a single brush of bare skin caused your flesh to whither and die. “Pick one. They’re all true enough.”
Kaz was not a giddy boy smiling and making plans for a future with her. He was a dangerous player who was always working an angle.
“Please, my darling Inej, treasure of my heart, won’t you do me the honor of acquiring me a new hat?”
Brick by brick. It was a promise that let him sleep at night, the drove him everyday, that kept Jordie’s ghost at bay.
Kaz’s servant, greed, luring them South like a piper with a flute in hand.
“Being angry at Kaz for being ruthless is like being angry at a stove for being hot. You know what he is.”
“I wouldn’t trust you to tie my shoes without stealing the laces.”
Matthias knew monsters, and one glance at Kaz had told him this was a creature who had spent too long in the dark—he’d brought something back with him when he’d crawled into the light.
“The easiest way to steal a man’s wallet is to tell him you’re going to steal his watch. You take his attention and direct it where you want it to go.”
“You can’t spend his money if you’re dead.” “I’ll acquire expensive habits in the afterlife.”
“I don’t want to die.” “I’ll do my best to make other arrangements for you.”
“You came back for me.” “I protect my investments.” Investments. “I’m glad I’m bleeding all over your shirt.”
Matthias suspected that Brekker would drag the girl back from hell himself if he had to.
He’d gifted her her first blade, the one she called Sankt Petyr—not as pretty as wild geraniums, but more practical.
“Kaz told me...he said it was my choice, that he wouldn’t be the one to mark me again.”
Because I’ve been looking for an excuse to talk to your for two days.
He needed to know she believed in him.
“What to do you want, then?” The old answers came easily to mind. Money. Vengeance. Jordie’s voice in my head silenced forever. But a different reply roared to life inside him, loud, insistent, and unwelcome. You, Inej. You.
Kaz would always remember that moment, when he’d seen greed take hold of his brother, an invisible hand guiding him forward, the lever at work.
There could be no judgement from a boy known as Dirtyhands.
“Let’s say the mark is a tourist walking through the barrel. He’s heard it’s a good place to get rolled, so he keeps patting his wallet, making sure it’s there, congratulating himself on just how alert and cautious he’s being. No fool he. Of course every time he pats his back pocket or front of his coat, what’s he doing? He’s telling every thief on the Stave exactly where he keeps his scrub.”
It was because she was listening so closely that she knew the exact moment when Kaz Brekker, Dirtyhands, the bastard of the barrel and the deadliest boy in Ketterdam, fainted.
He’d heard there were sharks in these waters but they wouldn’t touch him. He was a monster now, too.
He’d imagined his death a thousand ways, but never sleeping through it.
It was as if once Kaz had seen her, he’d understood how to keep seeing her.
“If it were a trick, I’d promise you safety. I’d offer you happiness. I don’t know if that exists in the barrel, but you’ll find none of it with me.” Better terrible truths than kind lies.
He knew he was being reckless, selfish, but wasn’t that why they called him Dirtyhands? No job too risky. No deed too low. Dirtyhands would see the rough work done.
A good magician wasn’t much different than a proper thief.
She could see it took every last bit of his terrible will to remain still beneath her touch. And yet, he did not pull away. She knew it was the best he could offer. It was not enough.
“Some people see a magic trick and say, ‘Impossible!’ They clap their hands, turn over their money, and forget about it ten minutes later. Other people ask how it worked. They go home, get into bed, toss and turn, wondering how it was done. It takes them a good nights sleep to forget all about it. And then there are the ones who stay awake, running through the trick again and again, looking for the skip in perception, the crack in the illusion that will explain how their eyes got duped; they’re the kind who won’t rest until they’ve mastered that little bit of mystery for themselves. I’m that kind”
“You love trickery.” “I love puzzles. Trickery is just my native tongue.”
“Do you know the secret to gambling, Helvar? Cheat.”
There was no part of him that was not broken, that had not been healed wrong. There was no part of him that was not stronger for having been broken.
Her eyes were shut, her oil-black lashes fanned over her cheeks. The harbor wind had lifted her dark hair, and for a moment Kaz was a boy again, sure that there was magic in the world. She’d laughed, and if he could have bottled the sound and gotten drunk on it every night, he would have. It terrified him.
You’ve cheated death too many times. Greed may do your bidding, but death serves no man.
He needed to tell her...what? That she was lovely and brave and better than anything he deserved. That he was twisted, crooked, wrong, but not so broken that he couldn’t pull himself together into some semblance of a man for her.
“Saints, Kaz, you actually look happy.” “Don’t be ridiculous,” he snapped. But there was no mistaking it. Kaz Brekker was grinning like an idiot.
“I can hear the change in Kaz’s breathing whenever he looks at you.” “You...you can?” “It catches every time, like he’s never seen you before.”
“How will you have me? Fully clothed, gloves on, your head turned away so our lips can never touch? I will have you without armor, Kaz Brekker. Or I will not have you at all.”
“I’m not big on bluffing, am I, Inej?” “Not as a rule.” “And why is that?” “Because he’d rather cheat.”
Inej wanted Kaz to become someone else, a better person, a gentler thief. But that boy had no place here. That boy ended up starving in an alley. He ended up dead. That boy couldn’t get her back. I’m going to get my money, and I’m going to get my girl.
“A proper thief is like a proper poison. He leaves no trace.”
There were no good men in Ketterdam, Kaz said. The climate didn’t agree with them.
“If you don’t care about money, Nina dear, call it by it’s other names.” “Kruge? Scrub? Kaz’s one true love?” “Freedom, security, retribution.”
“It’s pragmatic. If I were cruel, I’d give him a eulogy instead of a conversation.”
“You haven’t been alive long enough to rack up your share of sin.” “I’m a quick study.”
Patience, he reminded himself. He’d practiced it early and often. Patience would bring all his enemies to their knees in time.
“You’ve got the devil’s own blood in you, boy.”
Kaz was going to have to find a new language of suffering to teach that smug merch son of a bitch.
“I would come for you. And if I couldn’t walk, I’d crawl to you, and no matter how broken we were, we’d fight our way out together—knives drawn, pistols blazing. Because that’s what we do. We never stop fighting.”
“My mother is Ketterdam. She birthed me in the harbor. My father is profit. I honor him daily.”
Desperate for some sign that he might open himself to her, that they could be more than two creatures united by their distrust of the world.
They could continue on with their armor intact. She would have her ship and he would have his city.
Sure, a lock was like a woman. It was also like a man and anyone or anything else—if you wanted to understand it, you had to take it apart and see how it worked. If you wanted to master it, you had to learn it so well you could put it back together.
He always liked returning to a home or business he’d had cause to visit before. It wasn’t just the familiarity. It was as if by returning, he laid claim to a place. We know each other’s secrets, the house seemed to say. Welcome back.
“When people see a cripple walking down the street, leaning on his cane, what do they feel? They feel pity. Now, what do they think when they see me coming?” “They think they’d better cross the street.”
“We can endure a lot of pain. It’s shame that eats men whole.”
“I don’t hold a grudge. I cradle it. I coddle it. I feed it fine cuts of meat and send it to the best schools. I nurture my grudges, Rollins.”
It was as if Kaz had a secret map of Ketterdam that showed the city’s forgotten spaces.
“I’ve taken knives, bullets, and too many punches to count, all for a little piece of this town. This is the city I bled for. And if Ketterdam has taught me anything, it’s that you can always bleed a little more.”
Was Johannus Rietveld meant to be his Jakob Hertzoon? Or had it been some way of resurrecting the family he’d lost? Did it even matter?
“I wreak all the havoc I can until my luck runs out, use our haul to build an empire.” “And after that?” “Who knows? Maybe I’ll burn it to the ground.”
Tell her to get out, a voice inside him demanded. Beg her to stay.
Kaz thought he knew the language of pain intimately, but this ache was new. It hurt to stand here like this, so close to the circle of her arms.
“These things don’t wash away with prayer, Wraith. There is no peace waiting for me, no forgiveness, not in this life, not in the next.”
Two of the deadliest people the barrel had to offer and they could barely touch each other without both keeling over.
A black glass boy of deadly edges.
A bit of entertainment, the dramatic end of Kaz Brekker, the humbling of Dirtyhands. But this was no cheap comedy. It was a bloody rite, and Per Haskell had let the congregation gather, never realizing the real performance had yet to begin. Kaz stood upon his pulpit, wounded, bruised, and ready to preach.
“You have two minutes to get out of my house, old man. This city’s price is blood, and I’m happy to pay with yours.”
“What is wrong with him,” Nina grumbled. “Same thing that’s always wrong with him. He’s Kaz Brekker.”
“Rich men want to believe they deserve every penny they’ve got, so they forget what they owe to chance. Smart men are always looking for loopholes. They want an opportunity to game the system. The toughest mark is an honest man. Thankfully, they’re always in short supply.”
“Well, Brekker, it’s obvious you only deal in half truths and outright lies, so you’re clearly the man for the job.”
“What do you think my forgiveness looks like, Jordie?” “Who’s Jordie?” “Someone I trusted. Someone I didn’t want to lose.”
He put his gloves back on and didn’t take them off. He became twice as ruthless, fought twice as hard. He stopped worrying about seeming normal, let people see a glimmer of the madness within him and let them guess at the rest.
The rage inside him burned on and he learned to despise people who complained, who begged, who claimed they’d suffered. Let me teach you what pain looks like, he would say, and then he’d paint a picture with his fists.
That was what destroyed you in the end: the longing for something you could never have.
“I will kill you, Brekker. I will kill everything you love.” “The trick is not to love anything.”
“Suffering is like anything else. Live with it long enough, you learn to like the taste.”
She smiled then, her eyes red, her cheeks scattered with some kind of dust. It’s a smile he thought he might die to earn again.
“He doesn’t say goodbye. He just lets go.”
“Ketterdam is made of monsters. I just happen to have the longest teeth.”

Chapter 221
Watching the client who had come begging them for assistance with a typically ridiculous problem, Tobirama wondered what it would be like to have such an obvious connection to his soulmate as this man did. His already short sleeves were tied back even further as though to purposefully display as much as possible of the golden words flowing down the back of one arm, a greeting that must have been the first words his other half spoke to him. To have such easy proof of one’s connection, to know from the earliest ages that there was someone out there and how to find them, Tobirama could only wonder at the security this man must have felt in his bond from the moment he understood that it was waiting for him. It must have been nice.
It was also quite the pity for whoever had been the one to speak those words.
Privately Tobirama could admit that a small bit of the attitude he could feel bubbling to the surface was motivated by jealousy, petty retribution against someone who had something he wanted for himself. Out loud, of course, he wouldn’t be caught dead even hinting at such an admission.
“This is all very fascinating, Kirimoto-san, but I can’t help noting you have yet to explain what any of it has to do with Konohagakure. Were you perchance hoping to commission someone to record your story? Contracting a scribe would only be a D-rank mission, not the A-rank you proposed.” Lifting one eyebrow in judgement was probably going a little too far. If only he could bring himself to care.
“I was only just getting to that, Senju-sama,” their client spluttered. Anger flashed across his face but luckily for his continued health he was smart enough not to say anything. “The mission I came to contract your shinobi for is of vital importance! My son is a diamond among chaff; he deserves only the best! If the woman pressing suit upon him is truly so weak-hearted as to look at other men then she must be chased away!”
Tobirama blinked slowly. “And you wish us to…?”
“Why, to bring proof of her infidelity of course! I will pay the full price of an A-rank mission for two of your finest shinobi to approach her in disguise and seduce her away from my son! If her heart is as impure as I think it is then she will no doubt fall for such base tricks.”
He puffed himself up with the same false importance bred in to every idiot that had ever been born in the capital city, entirely ignorant of how little effect that would have on the one he was speaking to. When Tobirama got ahold of his brother he was going to throttle the man for taking today of all days off and leaving his duties to the next in command. Technically Madara would have been the next in command if he weren’t currently at home recovering from pushing himself too hard during training. No doubt that was exactly why Hashirama had taken the day off. Tobirama hoped the two idiots drowned in a teapot for making him deal with this particular client.
Despite his petty irritation he didn’t actually want to offend the man. Or at least not badly enough for the idiot to file a complaint that would bring another lecture down on his head about playing nice with their patrons. Several slow deep breaths helped bolster his patience until he could be certain none of the contempt he felt for this utter waste of time might show on his face; only then did he speak again.
“If you wish to pay for an A-rank mission then we will gladly accept your commission. Do you have any other information that might help us choose the two best people to accept this task?”
“You! I want one of them to be you!” For some reason Kirimoto-san felt the need to rise from his chair and point like there could be any mistaking who he was speaking to. They were, after all, the only people in the room. “I’ve heard all the rumors! Women from here to the capitol cry themselves to sleep every night over the hearts you break!”
Tobirama could feel one of his eyes twitching. He’d heard a lot of rumors about himself before but this one was new. Him? A country-wide heartbreaker? That went beyond laughable in to the territory of utterly absurd. If anything most rumors called him uptight and cold. Which, in all honesty, was certainly more true than the opposite. The last heart he broke was probably well back in his adolescence when one of his clanmates had taken some unnatural interest in him and refused to be turned aside with any gentler tactics than a flat out shredding of her ego.
Clinging hard to his temper, Tobirama bit down savagely on his own tongue before asking, “I don’t suppose I could change your mind on that? My duties here are many and rumors are easily blown out of proportion. Seduction is… not one of my strengths, shall we say.”
“Do...I want to know?” Hashirama’s voice asked in the same moment the door swung open. Their illustrious Hokage recoiled almost as soon as he stepped in to the room, eyes wide and confused upon being met with Tobirama’s acidic glare. Behind him trundled Madraa who looked a hell of a lot more put together than he had when Tobirama bullied him in to going home the night before with instructions to recuperate before he passed out over his own paperwork.
“Ah Hokage-sama!” their client bowed hastily.
“Hello! Um, honeypot mission?” The cringe in Hashirama’s voice was as obvious as the pain it caused him to think of his sibling in any sort of intimate context.
Unfortunately Kirimoto-san managed to speak first. “Senju-sama here has agreed to assist me in the matter I wrote to you about! All we need is one mo- ah! Perfect! You’re perfect! Pray tell, what is your name, miss?”
If nothing else. Tobirama decided while he was busily choking on his own tongue, that right there was worth the shame of having to take part in this ridiculous farce. Madara, to no one’s surprise, didn’t seem inclined to agree. His expression was particularly thunderous when he crossed his arms and leveled their client with a deadly stare.
“Uchiha Madara,” he growled. To Kirimoto-san’s credit he didn’t so much as flinch before breaking in to a massive grin.
“Even more perfect! A man! And here I thought I would have to pay extra for you to dress as one. Most excellent. It absolutely must be the two of you!”
Madara sneered. “I don’t think s-”
“Well now!” Hashirama spoke over him. “I’m sure you understand, my dear sir, that these two are my most valuable shinobi both administratively and in battle prowess. To allow both of them to be deployed on the same mission would be a serious detriment to our productivity - not to mention our security in the event of an attack.”
“But I must have them! Only them!”
“It simply doesn’t seem feasible. To fill the large spaces they would leave empty would mean keeping several extra people on active duty and I’m afraid the cost…” With a face of carefully constructed regret Hashirama sighed and Tobirama took a moment to reluctantly admire his brother’s ingenuity. People could say what they wanted about his overly active emotions. Very few ever realized how easily he manipulated them entirely because of that same buffoonery veiling their eyes to the wily genius underneath.
Kami forbid the idiot ever realize Tobirama admired that quality in him, though.
“Can I not convince you?” Kirimoto-san begged. “If it is a matter of cost I can of course make it worth your while to send them with me! Name your price, Hokage-sama, and I will pay it! Anything to ensure that my precious son lives his life only with a woman who will never betray him!”
The poor sod didn’t even seem to realize the mistake he’d just made as Hashirama turned to him with a beatific smile on his face and dollar signs in his eyes.
When he finally managed to leave the office Kirimoto-san’s face was as pained as his poor wallet was empty. Tobirama couldn’t find it in himself to even pity the man. Not when his own fate had been sealed with more than twenty thousand ryō above the typical asking price of an A-ranked mission. Regrettably, he hadn’t actually been lying when he said that seduction was not one of his strengths but apparently he would have to at least make an effort. It was hard to choose whether he regretted more that it would be a woman several years after he had finally accepted his preferences in the opposite direction or that, of all people, Madara would be there to watch him make such an utter fool out of himself.
“How exactly”-he demanded the moment their client was far enough down the hall not to overhear them-”do you propose I disguise myself? At the risk of showing my own ego, I’ll remind you that I do have rather distinctive looks.”
“You’re not the only one,” Madara growled with both hands going almost protectively to his extraordinary mane of hair.
Hashirama boomed a laugh that lacked even a shred of sympathy. “Oh I’m sure you two will figure something out! You could always wear a henge!”
“And if she’s chakra-sensitive? I notice you failed to even ask about that!” Madara reached out to smack his best friend across the back of the head for such an oversight. Familial bonds dictated that Tobirama should defend his sibling but, as he rather wished he was close enough to do that himself, he opted to pretend he’d seen nothing.
“Sorry! Sorry! I’m sure we can work out something that will hide your hair. Like a big scarf or a hood or something you could tuck it in to!” Hashirama drooped and clasped both hands under his chin. “Please don’t be mad at me!”
“That still leaves me,” Tobirama pointed out.
Both of the squabbling friends turned to him in consideration for several long heartbeats. Hashirama spoke up first with a bright smile. “I know! We can cover your tattoos with makeup! Geisha use white makeup all the time, I’m sure we can procure you some in a discreet manner!”
“Covering my face won’t do much good if my hair is just going to stick out like a fox in a henhouse. The only bloodlines left that produce hair this color are all shinobi clans and as much as I would consider it a complement to be mistaken for a Hatake, that wouldn’t exactly help me fly under the radar now would it?” he didn’t bother to list all of the other shinobi clans he would likely take insult at being mistaken for but his brother, thankfully, had enough tact to skirt that entirely.
Instead he went even deeper in to stupid territory because of course he did.
“You could dye your hair!” he crowed as if with the triumph of a great idea.
“I hate you,” Tobirama told him.
Without another word he swept out of the office, calling over his brother’s whining protests that since he was here anyway he might as well finish his own duties for the day. More than anything he was angered that Hashirama’s suggestion had actually been a logical solution and in the depths of his private heart he admitted that his irritation stemmed entirely from self-image. He didn’t want to dye his hair. He liked his hair. Call him an egomaniac but he rather enjoyed standing out from the masses.
Sending a clone to go pick out some dye from the infiltration core’s private storage room felt somehow less painful than doing it himself. At least when he received the memories of it the deed would already be done. Tobirama completed the handful of duties left unfinished at the tower and then left to wait at home for his clone to return. The first thing he did upon dispelling his copy was sit in his living room to study the instructions on the back of the dreaded box in excruciating detail. The only thing worse than going through with this idiocy would be somehow doing it wrong; this was already going to end in mockery one way or another, he didn’t need to give anyone more ammo than necessary. After making sure he understood exactly how to use the stuff Tobirama spun the box around again to study the color.
Maybe he wouldn’t look entirely terrible with red hair. If the stars aligned in just the right way he might be able to convince himself he looked a bit like his sister in law. The Uzumaki, now there was a clan he would feel no shame for having a connection to and it would certainly be a logical assumption. They did have a rather sizable civilian population.
Turning the box side to side in an effort to determine whether he thought the color looked like a natural one, he couldn’t help but let his eyes be drawn to the golden letters embossed near the very top, an elegant curling script that greatly resembled the letters Kirimoto-san bore along one arm. What would he do, Tobirama wondered, if at last he managed to discover his own soulmate and he wasn’t able to reach out because of this? He’d never been all that fond of undercover missions for just this reason. To meet his soulmate while he didn’t even look like himself, to risk that they might fall in love with a falsity. A deep sigh escaped him and Tobirama spun the box around so he wouldn’t have to look at the letters anymore. Everything about this mission was stupid - including the emotions he was letting it drag out of him. Best to just get this over with before he got too maudlin about things so far out of his control.
All told, including the time he took to pause and investigate the chemical compounds, the dying process took just over an hour and Tobirama refused to look at himself in the mirror until he had thoroughly rinsed the mixture out of his hair and let the whole thing dry completely. Only then did he finally approach the bathroom vanity with trepidation and lift his eyes to take in the horror of what he’d done. He had just enough time to cringe in distaste before the front door of his home slammed open with a bang that ricocheted down the hall.
“Tobi?” Hashirama’s voice called out to him in an oddly strangled tone. “You here?”
“Unfortunately.” At his reply footsteps hurried closer.
“We may have to apply a slight change of plaaaa-....ns...oh my.”
“Anija I swear if you finish that sentence after I only just finished this nonsense”-Tobirama jerked an angry thumb at his own mangled hair-“I will make you regret ever being born.”
His brother stared at him. Stared some more. Blinked several times and then continued to stare, all while Tobirama’s ire grew closer and closer to the boiling point. Finally he drew in a breath that rattled ominously.
“Come with me,” he murmured shortly before spinning on one heel and marching back towards the front door.
“Now hold on! Anija, what the hell?”
Annoyingly, Hashirama did not stop. His only concession was to pause long enough for Tobirama to tear an old jacket out of his front closet and pull the hood up tightly. Just because lots of other strangers were going to see him in this state didn’t mean he had to let all of Konoha in on his shame. Vanity, apparently, would need to be added on to the list of character flaws he hadn’t even known afflicted him until this thrice blasted village was built.
Where the hell they were going he couldn’t tell since the hood of his jacket was pulled so tight around his head that it obscured most of the world around him. On sense alone he guessed they were bound in a general southern direction but for the life of him he couldn’t imagine what existed to the south that had to do with his disguise or suddenly needed to be attended to the moment his brother saw him. Tobirama did try to ask, of course, but for once in his life Hashirama seemed to have lost his capacity for words. If only he could be like that more often. Well, if only he could be like that any other time but for now when Tobirama needed answers that none of his increasingly irritated questions were getting him. He did recognize right away when they entered the Uchiha district. Walking past the uchiwa-embossed gates always felt much like stepping in from the cold to a place with a thousand warm fires all around him. It was, he hated to admit, a very comforting place to be for a sensor like him.
It was also a great relief at the moment; Hashirama might profess to love the whole world but there were very few people he was actually close with and only one of them lived within the Uchiha compound. Tobirama frowned at the inside of his hood. It would make sense for them to go see Madara right now, he was the other half of this utterly ridiculous undercover mission, but it made no sense at all for Hashirama to be in this much of a tither over his best friend unless something had gone terribly wrong in the past hour since they had all been together.
How much trouble could one man get in to within the confines of their own village?
Despite how close the two of them were it was still a mild surprise when Hashirama let them both in to Madara’s house without so much as knocking. Tobirama wracked his brain trying to remember whether Izuna still lived with his brother while the two of them made their way down the hall. Since they were inside now, safe from the judging eyes of the general public, Tobirama allowed his fingers to loosen their hold on the material of his hood until he had enough vision to take in the home of the Uchiha clan head. Much more spartan than he had expected. If he were taking this first look a handful of years ago he would have expected bloodied weapons to line the walls and plaques bearing the heads of notable kills. He’d long grown past such childish assumptions but if he were honest he still would have expected this place to be a little more plush, a little more befitting the head of such a large and lucrative clan.
“Mads? Mads I’m back. Are you...okay if we come in?” Hashirama paused at the beginning of the hallway to gently wrap his knuckles against a plain shoji screen.
“End me now,” Madara’s miserable voice drifted out. “If a single person in my clan sees this I will never hear the end of it.”
“We’re coming in, okay?”
Hashirama waited just a moment longer to give his friend time for yelling if he was truly so opposed to them entering. When no protests came he nodded once and then opened the door, pulling Tobirama behind him as he walked forward in to the room.
Strange as it was to find himself in Uchiha Madara’s bedroom of all places Tobirama didn’t have time to even look around to see if the decor here was as barren as the rest of the house. He didn’t even have the time to ruminate on the odd places life had taken him just today. The moment he stepped inside the room all of his attention was riveted to the figure huddled on the bed with face in hands. Logic told him that was Madara. It sounded like him. Felt like him. His eyes, however, must have been playing tricks on him.
“The...hell...is going on?” Tobirama pulled his free arm away from Hashirama’s grasp to poke at him with confusion. “I thought you said he was going with the scarf idea? How the hell did you get a dye that color to saturate this much hair in such a short time? And for that matter, why on earth did you give him the same color as me?”
“Oh I didn’t do this,” Hashirama said.
“So he did it to himself?”
“No, I think you did it.”
Tobirama blinked slowly, one eyebrow rising. “I most certainly did not. You saw me when you came to get me, you know exactly what I’ve been doing since I left the tower.”
In his indignation at being accused he missed the sharp movement of Madara’s head snapping up to look at him for the first time since he entered the home. Busy as he was jamming a finger in to his brother’s side, he didn’t see those eyes zero in on him like a kunai finding its target but he sure did feel the weight of them. At first he ignored it - this was hardly the first time he’d been stared at - but when Hashirama managed to bat his finger away and pointedly indicated the man whose house they had just invaded he finally looked over.
“Can I help you?” he muttered, instinctively defensive under that much scrutiny.
“What do you mean the same color as you?”
His first reflex was to pull the hood tighter around his head. Then he realized how stupid that was. If the two of them were going on the same mission then obviously Madara would have to see him in this state at some point - and if anyone was going to understand the pain of having to dye his hair such a wildly unsuitable shade it would be the man whose head currently matched his own. A heavy sigh of defeat escaped him before, with great effort, he finally allowed his fingers to unclench so the hood of his jacket could fall back to reveal that his hair indeed was a perfect match for the ridiculous color of Madara’s. He expected the man to stare, of course. What he didn’t expect was for his jaw to drop and one hand to reach out blindly for Hashirama.
“You,” Madara croaked. “Go away. Now. I...I need to talk to...just go away!”
“Okay.” In a move possibly more surprising than anything else that had happened so far, Hashirama turned to leave the room as easily as that, not a word of protest. Tobirama watched him go with both eyes wide and blinking.
“I...how did you do that? I’ve never seen him leave so easily in my life. How did you make him do that!?”
Bed springs creaked and groaned like a symphony to announce Madara’s rise from the bed, eyes still locked on to Tobirama with all the intensity of the hawks he so enjoyed flying. He looked just as silly with the wrong hair color as Tobirama felt he himself did but something told him that mockery would not go over very well just now no matter that Madara was one of the few who could give as good as he got. The arguments they got in to were usually some of the highest points of Tobirama’s week.
“You dyed your hair.” Unfortunately his intelligence didn’t always shine through quite as obviously, such as moments like now when he felt compelled to state the very obvious.
“So did you,” Tobirama said with one eyebrow raised in judgment.
“No I didn’t.”
After a pause Tobirama canted his head to one side and lifted the other brow. “Well then I suppose I’ll need to get my eyes checked very soon.”
“No! Shut up, you don’t get it! I didn’t do this!”
“You’re claiming...what? Some kind of hair dye bandit snuck in and colored your hair when you weren’t looking?”
“I think it means we’re soulmates, you absolute fuck!”
“Oh.”
There were dozens of responses he could pretend he’d been expecting and that one would not have been even close to getting on the list. Tobirama opened his mouth only to close it, thoughts racing over each other in a jumbled heap because he knew exactly what Madara was getting at. Of course he did.
And of course the universe would be so petty as to give them a way to find each other only through humiliating themselves. Sometimes he really did hate other people for how easily they discovered their bonds. Not him, though, oh no. He couldn’t have a red string tied to his pinkie, he couldn’t have been born with the first words his soulmate would say to him imprinted on his skin, he couldn’t even have the moment of unquestionable knowing when he heard his partner’s voice for the first time. Because it was him and because it was Madara they just had to do things the hard way, waiting until one of them dyed their hair so the change of color could be reflected on their other half.
“That color looks awful on you,” was all he could think to say; perhaps a little too honest but from the very start of peace the two of them had silently agreed to never pull their punches with each other. Madara stared at him in disbelief for a half dozen heartbeats until without warning he burst in to raucous laughter.
“Seriously?” he demanded. “That’s all you have to say?”
Tobirama threw both of his hands in the air. “Well what do you want me to say? It’s not like I have some big speech prepared just in case I find out the other half of my soul has been riding around in you this whole time!”
“No? That’s almost surprising. You’re usually prepared for pretty much anything.” The smile on Madara’s face gentled his words from insults to fond teasing and Tobirama wondered how long the possibilities of this had been hiding right under his nose.
“I didn’t really want to go on this mission in the first place,” he mused. “Now I really don’t want to.”
“Because we match and it’s incredibly obvious that we shouldn’t?”
“No, dumb ass, because I just discovered my soulmate and I’d rather like some time to process that.” Tobirama rolled his eyes but there was a very telling hint of a smile on his own face as well. How could there not be?
Madara hummed and shifted his weight, coincidentally ending up just a little bit closer when he settled, though Tobirama chose not to point that out. “How much do you think it would take to convince your brother not to send us out?”
“Oh probably about a thousand yen more than whatever Kirimoto-san paid him.”
“Hn. I’d have to dip in to the clan coffers. And then I’d have to listen to the elders bitch about squandering clan funds. Ugh.” Madara’s nose wrinkled. Tobirama mirrored him if for no other reason than annoyance that he’d never really noticed how adorable that was. If he looked back on all the past interactions they’d had he would probably be able to drum up a thousand different clues that they were meant to be together.
Good thing he wasn’t the type to look back. Self reflection was so boring.
The problem of his brother forcing them to go through with this mission still was just something they would have to figure out later. Probably a very quick later since they were still expected to leave some time later that same day but still, certainly a problem Tobirama was willing to put off solving until he absolutely had to. If Hashirama was really so dead set on making them do this when he very clearly understood what situation was happening then he could come get them himself.
“Spot of tea?” Tobirama looked around as though he might spot a kitchen through the bedroom walls.
“Ah, yeah, I guess it would be polite of me to get you some, huh?”
Madara rocked back on to his heels and looked towards the door as well, the perfect opportunity for Tobirama to really look at him and take in all the little details he normally wouldn’t in another person, the shape of his jawline and the tiny amounts of baby fat that had never fully left his cheeks.
“It isn’t like you to be concerned about being polite,” he pointed out.
When his soulmate turned back to reveal an openly amused grin he thought maybe the universe did know what it was doing - but he was still a little annoyed that it had made things so difficult for him. Also quite annoyed that they were likely going to have to see this ridiculous mission through. What an absolute shame that he finally discovered his soulmate only for the poor man to bear witness to his complete lack of seduction skills all in the same day. He hoped Hashirama had already started running because he was going to murder his own brother for this.

I want to hear more about these Sonic colors ideas especially the one about Orbot about getting into Eggman about his weight
I have a whole lot of ideas about this stuff involving Colors! I've been working on a post about him eating Wisps and also what his visits to Sweet Mountain were like, so I won't give the details of those away in this answer. But I can talk a bit more about his weight gain and how Orbot tried to handle it here!
Eggman wasn't sure how much he weighed before it because he hadn't been keeping track for a while, but he ended up gaining quite a bit and reached over 300 lbs thanks to his time spent at the park.
The weight came from eating a lot more often with bigger meals to reward himself for hard work and celebrate his dreams of the park all coming together. That, along with the way applied the 'all you can eat world' phrase to every planet where he offered food- except for the Bucket O’ Sushi restaurant because seafood doesn't sit well with him. His newly formed obsession with Wisp eating and the 'taste testing' of the Sweet Mountain supplies was also very fattening.
It was easy for Orbot to notice that he'd been trying to hold his growing belly back with his bodysuit and compress his bigger tits. That's why the material of his coat and bodysuit made stretching sounds in the cutscenes, because it was straining even tighter than usual. During a few trips to Tropical Resort and Sweet Mountain in particular, he wouldn't stop eating to the point that his clothes were so tight that he had to move very carefully in them.
As soon as Orbot noticed he was gaining weight too fast, he highly suspected that he was oblivious to just how much and knew it was going to be difficult to get it through to him. He was clearly caught up in the excitement of the Interstellar Amusement Park fun, so much that he was even acting like he was already living the luxurious life of victory he always wanted, even though he still had yet to take control of Sonic's world and make it the crown jewel.
So Orbot tried to do things in Eggman's preferred way first. He thought that if he allowed him to eat big but slightly healthier meals before trips to Sweet Mountain, he wouldn't eat as many sugary treats. But he couldn't have been more wrong because Eggman loves extra dessert and always finds room for more. In fact, one time he arrived after a big dinner and kept eating until his bodysuit split and exposed his even bigger belly that he'd been trying to hide for a while.
He was putting on pounds without checking his weight once and the changes became obvious by the way his clothes weren't fitting, how he was outgrowing chairs, and how he was having trouble adjusting to the gained weight. Orbot and Cubot no longer pretended to ignore it and poked fun by saying he looked as round as the planets, asking if he was pregnant, and laughing when his floating chair touched the floor when he was snacking on junk while lounging in it.
Eggman was upset and humiliated and Orbot toned it down when he realized it wasn't helping him understand. So he tried a gentler approach but Eggman still wasn't happy to hear it. He'd point out that his clothes were getting tighter but Eggman denied it and made up excuses. He'd ask if he realizes he's getting bigger and rounder but Eggman kept telling him he was exaggerating. Still, he'd keep making persistent little comments to make sure he wouldn't forget.
But he was just stubborn every time, so it got to the point where he finally needed to be direct and attempt to reason with him. He picked the worst time to do this because Eggman was busy making announcements over the speakers. When he was taking a break to drink and eat a few snacks, Orbot finally confronted him about it and told him that he really needed to do something about the weight he's been gaining. Eggman once again promptly refused and denied it.
But this time Orbot was determined so he kept going. He pointed out how he'd been so greedy by stuffing his face every day and how he looked like he was about to burst out his clothes because the buttons and zippers were barely holding on. He also pointed out one of the biggest signs of his floating chair being unable to hold his weight. And how even though he could still sit in it after adjusting the limit it could hold, it was starting to tilt again as he continued gaining.
Eggman was visibly getting more cross as he frowned and glared at him in disbelief because he considered his wording and descriptions to be very bold and rude. But Orbot assumed that was a sign he was getting through to him so he continued. There came a point where Eggman couldn't stand listening to the nagging for much longer and stood up to leave. That's when he realized he'd forgotten to mute the mic before his break.
The realization that the conversation played out over the speakers sent him into a panic and he scolded Orbot for being so inconsiderate, even though he was the one that forgot to mute the mic. Orbot was unfazed and used his reaction to emphasize his point, saying it wouldn't be such a big deal if it wasn't true. Eggman tried to snap back by saying it was a private matter that they can't just let the whole park hear, whether it's true or not.
He still wasn't going to admit that he needed to lose the weight so easily and Orbot expected that, but he was clearly the most embarrassed he'd seen him yet, evident by his deep blush and the way he rushed away for some privacy to calm down after. He hoped it would finally make him understand that it needs to be done, even if he didn't try getting on the diet until after attempting to mind-control the planet and making it the center of the park.
Eggman actually kept the weight for a while since Generations showed that after Colors, he left Orbot and Cubot in space after he discovered the Time Eater. But as soon as they got back and he was out of the white space, they pushed him to try another diet and start exercising again. They were also a bit harsher with the process, not only to make it more effective but also because they used it as payback for him leaving them in space.
He did need that extra push because it was one of the times he found it most difficult to lose the extra weight. Especially since after defeats, he usually wants to eat or drink to comfort himself and sometimes spends days in bed recovering from the failure and disappointment. But since he'd already gained far too much to be sitting around and eating, they didn't let him get lazy and got started on helping him lose it instead.

The CEO’s Little Kitten ~ Jumin Han x Reader
(( I’ve been feeling a bit off for a while now, and MysMes has always been a way to get comfort for +4 years, and replaying’s Zen’s route, along with the fact that my bestie’s birthday is approaching, made me want to come up with some nice for Jumin, where the Reader is a Veterinarian. Yeah, I’m definitely not projecting, I promise, lolol. ))
---
Tumblr media
Everyone knew that Jumin loved Elizabeth the 3rd the most in this life, for a lot of reasons, so much that he often called her the partner of his life. On the other hand, the fact that he was never around women was the reason for a lot of false rumours that the other members of the RFA would often abuse and use to wind him up, coming to get a rise out of the otherwise stoic and composed man, but nothing seemed to bother him.
That is, until his father brought another woman with him and tried to convince him to marry this woman’s protejee, and if that wasn’t enough, his cat was behaving oddly, and the Vet was in vacation, so he was a bit frantic, to say the least.
“Mr. Han, if I may, my son has a friend who works at a well known and renowned modern Veterinary clinics. I could give him a call and see if this person is available to come by for a check up on Elizabeth the 3rd.” the chef spoke, making Jumin raise his eyebrow in intrigue. “Very well, let me know when he will come by.” he nodded, going to his room to watch over his cat more.
Barely 2 hours passed, and there was a knock on his bedroom door, and opening the door, the chef was in front of him with a small, fatherly smile.
“Mr. Han, the doctor has arrived.” the chef declared, standing in front of the tall, brunet man. “Tell him to come in.” Jumin spoke dismissively, going back inside the room. “Hello~! Where’s the beautiful little princess~?” a cheerful and sweet, soft voice called out, and a beautiful woman stepped in, dressed in a purple medical scrub, and the blouse had kitten pattern. “I wasn’t aware that a woman was the Veterinarian. My name is Jumin Han, and this is Elizabeth the 3rd.” Jumin extended his hand to her to shake, albeit a bit reticent, as he usually is around women. “It’s great meeting you, Mr. Han. I am Doctor Y/N L/N, you may call me whatever you want. Daniel’s dad mentioned something about this little sweetheart, but I have to know from you directly the reason why you wanted a check up.” she spoke with so much ease, as she went to kneel in front of the bed, next to the cat. “I left her with my assistant for the day, but she hasn’t been eating since I brought her back home. That’s unusual behaviour for her.” Jumin looked at the woman with curiosity as he saw Elizabeth slowly put her her forehead to the doctor’s, and for him, it looked like a picture painted by someone as great as the genius renaissance man, Leonardo da Vinci. “I understand. First of all, I’d like to ask how meticulous are you in taking care of her. Like...Do you give her strictly measured meals at specific times of the day, and only certain brands of food? Or you prefer to let things be estimate or by the eye?” she asked, as the cat jumped on her lap, as she began petting her. “Everything has been measured and chosen by widely renowned nutritionists.” he explained, watching his cat behave more affectionate with this stranger than with most people she’s ever been in contact with. “That makes sense. And when you let her with your assistant, are they are thorough and careful as you are, or do they estimate?” she asked again, helping the cat climb up her torso, as she rested around her neck, like a scarf, and started purring loudly. “I can only guess she wouldn’t be as exact as I am.” he crossed his arms, looking at the content and happy look on his cat’s face, as the woman was scratching her behind the ears. “Have you considered the potential idea that Elizabeth ate too much? For example, if you give her 1 and a half can of food, but your assistant fed her both full cans, not wanting to waste everything, then Elizabeth is way too full to eat again. She needs to digest everything and maybe a bit more exercising.” the woman explained, touching her nose to the cat’s, giggling at how cute she was being. “Are you sure that’s all there is?” Jumin asked again, just to be certain. “Based on the anamnesis and the checking up I did on her, everything is perfect. You’re taking take of her better than 99% of the population of pet owners. Her fur is impeccable, her eyes are shiny and follow me perfectly, her reflexes are great...Maybe we should trip her claws a bit, but that’s no big deal. Other than that...She has the cutest toe beans I’ve seen in a long while.” her voice became a bit more pitched, as she gushed over his cat. “Very well, then thank you for your help. How much do I owe you for your consultation and diagnosis?” he asked in a professional voice. “Owe me? You don’t owe me anything. It’s not like I really did anything. Besides, it’s always a pleasure being able to spend time with such a beautiful princess.” Y/N smiled at the man with a grin that resembled that of his own cat. “That’s rather gracious of you. Let me at least pay for a taxi to whatever destination you’re heading to.” Jumin pressed on, feeling weird seeing someone not taking the money he offered. “Aww, thank you, Mr. Han, but that won’t be necessary. I like to walk around the city quite a lot, it’s relaxing after a long day at the clinic.” she carefully picked up Elizabeth from her shoulders, kissed her head, then gave her to Jumin. “Would it be okay to ask for your business phone number, in case Elizabeth the 3rd needs your assistance again?” he asked, speaking purely business...Or so he wanted to make himself believe. “Oh, sure! I hope I see this gorgeous baby again! I don’t exactly have a separate business phone, but here, this is where you can contact me. I always have my phone with me, so you’ll reach me pretty fast if anything happens.” she took out her phone and gave him her number, leaning in to give the kitten one last kiss on the nose.
The man, for the rest of the day, spent his time playing and cuddling with Elizabeth, pondering over the incredibly strange interaction he had today with this woman.
She didn’t seem anything like any woman he had the misfortune to encounter, all of them gold diggers, either wanting him for his money directly, or to have something to tie them with his company, or with his father...Hell, some were in it for his money AND looks, if that wasn’t bad enough.
Jumin is aware that he was born with great looks, and he has the brains to make that work in his and his company’s favour, getting successful deal after deal, and then ghosting them.
But this woman...This so called Y/N...She was something else.
She didn’t smile brightly and talked sweetly to him out of wanting something, she did all that just because she saw Elizabeth.
She didn’t give him her number because she wanted to pester him with business messages, but because she wanted to see Elizabeth again.
She couldn’t care less about Jumin, she just wanted to do her job...No, rather, her passion.
Jumin could see the love and passion she had from the way her eyes sparkles, and the way her voice became an infinite times gentler and sweeter whenever she’d talk to or about Elizabeth.
This woman was definitely something else, especially because she completely conquered Jumin’s thoughts.
And now he wondered...
He seemed like a generous woman who would like to help others...So if he could get Assistant Kang to join RFA, why shouldn’t he try to get her in the organisation too?
And she quickly agreed as soon as she heard about charities and parties, and suggested giving money for the local animal shelters and the wildlife associations and so on.
As days and weeks passed, a party was successfully held, and Jumin had the pleasure to see how perfectly well Y/N blended in with the other members, and they all loved her, despite being rather timid at the beginning.
After the party, they gathered to a pub, had some drinks and something light to eat, while Y/N, Zen and Seven would sing Karaoke, Jumin would watch them amused, and the two women would take care of a cutely drunk Yoosung.
It was incredibly wholesome and they decided they must definitely do that again some time soon.
Months passed, and Jumin called the woman more often to hang out with Elizabeth and himself, under the pretext of wanting her to check up on the cat, but of course, they’d often hang out and eat together more often than not, with him occasionally walking her home, saying that he didn’t have time to do his 30 minutes of physical exercise.
But things started taking a turn for the worse unexpectedly soon, when, while on a play date with the cat, Y/N received a call from her boss, telling her that she was fired.
“Wait, what?! Wh-Why am I fired? Have I done something wrong?” she walked away from Jumin, speaking in a softer voice, not wanting to bother him. “Not necessarily wrong, but you don’t fit in to our ideology. You accept treating animals for less than the normal sum, and you think everything is a charity. Y/N, I’m sorry, this is a business in the end, and we can’t have charity work for every homeless stray, or any owner who can’t pay for their pet’s treatment. You have a good heart, but we can’t continue like this any further. I’m sorry, you are a fantastic doctor. Good luck in the future.” her boss explained, making the girl nod, putting her arm around herself. “...I understand. I’m sorry for disappointing you. I wish you all the best in the future as well.” she spoke in a voice barely audible, sighing as she hung up and raking her hand through her hair. “Great. That’s exactly what I needed.” she muttered, shaking her head and going back to Jumin as if nothing was wrong.
“Did something happen?” the man asked, realising rather easily that something wasn’t well. “Oh, yeah, all’s cool, don’t worry! More importantly, look how Elizabeth is cuddled up with her toy!” she tried to change the subject, but he wasn’t having any of it. “Was it a call from work?” he was annoyingly perceptive, the girl thought, as she chuckled awkwardly. “I can’t hide anything from you, can I?” the corner of her mouth twitched upwards for a split second. “So I hit the nail spot on.” he nodded, not sketching any emotion on his face. “They fired me. Said I didn’t treat my job like a business, but like a charity passion. I’ve been doing this for so long, with the only mindset of saving animals that I kept forgetting that...I can’t pay for everyone’s treatments if they can’t afford it, and I can’t take care of all the strays in the world either. I guess I forgot myself and overstepped the line between sensibility and my heart...It’s pretty pathetic, isn’t it?” she laughed weakly, looking down with an embarrassed expression. “I wouldn’t call that pathetic. In the worst case, maybe a bit naive. You have an admirable heart and your intentions are good, it’s obvious that you’re doing your job with love and passion. You remind me of Zen, but you’re less arrogant and annoyingly prideful.” Jumin spoke his opinion, making the girl smile tenderly. “Thank you...You’re really nice, Jumin. Even though you’re a successful businessman, you make an effort to understand someone so different. My dream has always been to become a great doctor and work hard to get enough money to build my own clinic, get funds for high tech equipment and also try to help the animal shelter and take care of all the strays. It’s...A rather unrealistic and childish dream, don’t you think?” she chuckled, shifting her gaze towards the playing cat. “It is incredibly naive and unrealistic, if you don’t have the proper base for a business and know how to negotiate to earn funds and equipment. I can help with that.” Jumin ended his proposition, making the girl frown at him. “I refuse that. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful that you’d be willing to waste your money on someone like me...But...It’s as I said. Wasted money on someone who has no idea what to do with it. And besides...I wouldn’t want you to think that I want your money or something. I want us to be friends. I care a lot about our friendship.” she smiled tenderly at him, which only made the man sigh. “At least you’re not refusing me out of stupid pride. If you are ever in need of a job, Elizabeth’s private doctor position is always open for you.” Jumin nodded at her. “Thank you, Jumin. I’ll keep that in mind. I won’t forget your kindness...But I don’t want to end up like Jaehee, where you have to text her, since you can’t stand her voice anymore. I wouldn’t want to annoy you with just my presence.” she scratched the back of her neck awkwardly. “...I’m sure that wouldn’t happen. Anyhow, I know a few great clinics that are willing to employ someone with your energy and knowledge. The least I can do is call them up and recommend you.” the man suggested, which seemed to brighter the expression on her face. “I would greatly appreciate that. Thank you from all my heart for caring about me, Jumin. I mean it, I appreciate everything you’ve done for me.” she grinned gratefully at him, and for the first time in his life, he felt a heart arrhythmia.
And that’s exactly what he did, and for a while, the girl was more than enthusiastic with everything, but sooner rather than later, the boss realised she was an amazing employee and started abusing her work ours, calling for her more than one shift per day, not allowing her enough time to rest between shifts, not enough time to eat properly or go out with the members of the organisation whenever they managed to match a evening.
Jaehee would call to check up on her, and oftentimes, she’d wake her up in the middle of the afternoon, which is when she was able to get a wink of sleep.
Zen would ask her to post selfies, and it was obvious she was starting to get paler, and she had dark circles around her eyes from the sleep deprivation.
Yoosung asked her if she’s been eating properly, as he thought she was starting to lose weight in an unhealthily way.
Seven asked if she was doing anything else other than overworking herself, as even himself and Jaehee, despite everything, still found time to do some things for themselves too.
And Jumin...
Jumin was the most worried out of them all.
He knew how determined she was to save the little souls she was so fond of, and quickly realised how her kindness could easily be taken advantage of.
He was annoyed with how gentle and soft she was, but in the same way, that’s what intrigued him so much about her.
It only made him want to protect her, especially since he was lowkey blaming himself for recommending her that specific clinic.
So, one day, he found the perfect opportunity to call her, when Elizabeth, once again, stopped eating and was behaving rather lethargically and was coughing, and of course, as soon as she heard about the cat being in distress, she rushed to Jumin’s place without a second thought or suspicion.
As soon as she entered in his room, he had to gather all the self-control he had not to jump on her and get her in bed, to force her to sleep properly, while he gets her a proper, nutritious meal.
She wasn’t smiling, she wasn’t glowing, she wasn’t vibing, she wasn’t cheering, she wasn’t cuddling Elizabeth, she wasn’t...
She wasn’t okay.
And for some reason, this bothered Jumin a great time, but he wasn’t sure how to address this without offending her or making her uncomfortable.
His interactions with Zen and Jaehee made him understand human behaviour a bit more in-depth than he would otherwise, just from books, so he settled for examining first.
“Okay, so what’s wrong with the little princess?” her voice was weak and soft, as she kneeled down slowly, petting the cat. “She has been rather lazy today, didn’t want to play, and has been coughing frequently.” Jumin’s explanation was simple, but effective. “Fur ball. She has to vomit a fur ball, but can’t. Could you please bring me a tray or something? I wouldn’t want this beautiful white carpet to get dirty with stomach fluids and vomit.” she stretched herself to get her bag, taking out a sort of laxative. “Use this.” Jumin brought the first useless clipboard he found around, putting it on the ground next to her. “Thank you. There, there, darling, it will be alright, don’t worry. I know it’s uncomfortable, but you’ll get better in a second.” after giving her the laxative, she started massaging her belly, helping the cat vomit the fur ball easier. “Great job, sweety, you’re all good to go.” Y/N gave the cat the ghost of a smile, as she got up, albeit, as lethargic as the cat used to be. “Thank you for your time and for taking care of Elizabeth, Y/N. Why don’t you stay over for lunch?” Jumin asked, as he raised the clipboard and put it away, on a desk, not to forget to throw it away. “I’d love to, but maybe next time. I have a triple shift today and it starts in 2 hours. I really appreciate you thinking of me, but...Work.” she sighed, looking away, before giving with a forced smile. “Are you sick, Y/N? You don’t look very healthy to me. Have you gone to do regular check ups?” he asked, trying to think of a proper excuse to stop her from leaving. “Oh, uhm...I didn’t really have the time. Work has been taking most of my time. But I’ll go as soon as the opportunity arises, I promise!” she tried to skip the conversation. “Well, then, I’ll be off! It was great seeing you, Jumin. Elizabeth too, of course! Take care of yourselves!” she waved at them, rushing to leave the room, making sure she closes the door behind her.
Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to take too many steps, as a vertigo state started taking over her, and she had to stop and lean on the corridor’s wall, only for her vision to get blurry, covered with a myriad of black dots, and then disappearing completely.
She fainted, falling to the ground with a soft thud, the sound being amortised by the fluffy carpet, but it was enough for Jumin to go check up on and sigh at the sight.
He knew something like that was going to happen, yet he was just grateful it happened while in his home, not on the street or something.
Jaehee would sometimes experience vertigo states and faintness while at work, due to overwork and overexhaustion, but this was taken to the extreme.
That woman had no sense of self-preservation whatsoever.
He picked her up with ease, placing her gingerly on his bed, tucking her in, as he took of his blazer, rolling up his shirt sleeves and watching over her.
Usually, fainting would last barely seconds or minutes, but this wasn’t something ordinary. He heard of numerous cases of people sleeping 12, 14, even 16 or more hours, to compensate from the long period of stress and deprivation, so all he could do was wait until she would awaken herself, then give her a light, yet nutritious meal, make sure she hydrates herself...
And never let her do something as stupid as that.
He was going to make sure she doesn’t neglect herself again.
After all, you can’t fulfill your dreams if you are ill or dead, correct?
Jumin took her phone, putting it on silent and disabling all alarms, to make sure she sleeps unbothered, while he’d complete his work in silence and do everything he would do in a day, but as silent as possible.
It melted his heart when he noticed Elizabeth cuddling in the crook of Y/N’s neck, and at that moment, he wished he would take both of them in his arms and just stay there and rest for a while, in complete peace, having no more worries.
Tumblr media
He wasn’t sure when he fell asleep, but he was awoken by a soft cry, which startled him, only to see the girl on the edge of the bed, her head hung, her hands gripping at her unkept yet otherwise beautiful hair.
Frowning in confusion, he got up to sit next to her, putting his arm around her and pulling her to his chest, playing with her hair, as if he was playing with Elizabeth’s fur.
“I’m sorry for wasting your time, Jumin. I really am. I bothered you too much already...” she managed to squeak between her sobs. “Nonsense. Is that what was giving you distress?” he asked, in surprise. “That, and...I...Got fired. Again. I told the boss that I fainted and couldn’t come, but she didn’t believe me, so...That’s it. No more job again...And another slap in the face that I’m just a stupid girl who dreams too big, but has no idea how to do anything. I’m just a weak failure who can’t do anything right. You shouldn’t even stay around someone as stupid as me. I’m sorry...” her small form was trembling, and the man could swear the words were hurting him more than were hurting her. “Stop speaking like that. Instead of insulting yourself, solve things. If you can’t solve things by yourself, then ask for help. Everybody needs help sometimes. Nobody was born knowledgeable, and neither was I. My father helped a lot, and more, all the studies that have been taught to me. Like you don’t know know anything about management, I don’t know anything about medicine. Asking for help doesn’t make you weak, and nor does it make you a bother for anyone.” Jumin explained, as the girl hugged him tighter. “But...But...You’re so busy...I don’t want to give you more trouble than needed. I don’t want you to end up like me. My dreams are silly and unrealistic...I couldn’t possibly ask you to support something so stupid and childish as that.” she spoke in a meek, mouse-like voice. “You have no idea how many cat projects I’ve done so far and how much money I lost, because I wanted to glorify my love for Elizabeth the 3rd. I may be 27 years old and I may be the one who’s going to continue my father’s work after he retires, but that doesn’t mean I can’t indulge in my own passions. That’s how it is with you as well. So, Y/N, look at me. Look at me and ask me for help.” Jumin put his hands on her cheeks, raising her head so he could look into her tearful eyes that held a myriad of emotions and doubts. “Can I really be selfish and ask for your help, Jumin?” she managed to ask after having a small internal battle with herself inside her mind. “I wouldn’t offer my help if I wasn’t willing to do it properly.” he leaned in to kiss her forehead, making the girl take a sharp inhale, putting her hands over his, and smiling softly. “Thank you so much, Jumin. I owe you everything.” she whispered, gratefully. “You owe me taking care of yourself. That’s all. Accept the position of Elizabeth the 3rd’s personal Vet, and let me help you out with your dream. It’s not as unrealistic as you think it is, if only you have someone who knows what to do.” he offered, and she could only nod, and this time, her usual bright smile was back on her face, even despite the tears that were still streaming down her face. “Okay, Jumin. I trust you. I will take care of myself...So please help me out.” she said in such a sweet voice, that Jumin, for the first time in his life, had the urge to just grab her face and kiss her, with no regrets. “The deal is settled, then. Tomorrow I have a meeting with a wealthy company from abroad, and we will be staying at a resort by the beach. You’re coming as well, I won’t accept any complaints. I will call Assistant Kang to tell her that I will be leaving Elizabeth the 3rd with her for a few days. If you have appropriate outfits for going at the beach, then we will go pick them up from your place when I go leave Elizabeth with Assistant Kang. If not, we must go buy some.” Jumin got up, explaining everything as he called Jaehee, informing her of everything she must know.
She felt a bit uncomfortable knowing that Jaehee had more work on her hands because of her, but she had to learn to accept that she needed help, and Jumin was willing to offer it, because he was a good friend and he cared about her and her well-being, like nobody ever did.
It was weird being so pampered all the time, not feeling like she deserved it, but even so, her mind was constantly on the man she was living with, and even more, tomorrow was a big day.
She tried out a few swim suits, sundresses, hates, sunglasses and slippers, all the perfect clothes for going at the beach at a private resort and enjoying the cool ocean and the hot sun.
Y/N spent most of the flight sleeping on Jumin’s shoulder while listening to music on her phone, and he fell asleep with his head leaning on hers, as they arrived early morning, and went to have a great breakfast.
As the meeting started at noon sharp, Y/N spent the whole afternoon walking around the shore, with her feet in the water, listening to the waves breaking and the tranquil atmosphere, along with the ocean breeze and the sun rays were making her feel revitalised like never before.
She felt alive, after so long.
Hours passed without her even realising, and Jumin appeared in front of her bringing two cocktails on the beach lounge chairs, and she rushed to him.
“How was it? Everything alright?” she asked, taking a sip of the ice-cold strawberry drink. “Of course it did. But that isn’t the most important thing now. I see you’re rather happy. You’re not as pale as you used to be just two days ago either. I’m glad.” he said, causing another wide grin to spread on her face. “Well, it’s thanks to you, after all. You gave me the opportunity and helped revive me. I haven’t been out in the sun for a long while...And now...Well, I finally remember what it’s like to relax.” her smile was contagious, as Jumin started smiling a bit as well, until their phones started beeping and they saw the other members were chatting about the girl.
Yoosung: Is she okay?! I’ve been trying to text her all yesterday, but there was no sign :( Zen: Yeah, me too. This place has been kinda quiet without her. 707: I just tracked her location and... 707: She’s at an exotic resort?! lol?! Zen: ?!?!?! Yoosung: HUH?! Jaehee Kang: Let me explain. Zen: Jaehee, you know what happened with Y/N? Jaehee Kang: Not everything, but just some bits that I picked up from Mr. Han. Zen: What does Trust Fund Kid have to do with Y/N’s disappearance?! 707: LOLOLOL Y/N AND JUMIN ARE IN THE SAME PLACE, RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER!!! Yoosung: *Gasp sticker* Zen: SAY WHAT NOW?! Jaehee Kang: Mr. Han took Y/N with him on his business trip, saying that she needs a break from work. You all know how bad she was doing. Yesterday especially, she fainted from overwork and exhaustion, got fired, and Mr. Han offered her a job and said he’d make sure she’s okay.  Jaehee Kang: That’s the brief summary of what I pieced together. Yoosung: Y/N!!! If you see these messages, please tell us you’re feeling better!! I’m very happy that Jumin was so nice to help you out! Zen: ...That’s shocking. To think that Silver Spoon would do something like that for someone. That’s amazing. 707: Jumin, won’t you take me on a beach business trip too?! I feel my skin drying from the lack of sun too!! Zen: Jeez, don’t whine like that, do something about it.  707: lololol. Anyway, it’s not that shocking that Jumin did something like that for Y/N. I mean, he offered Zen some deals too. Didn’t he tell Yoosung that he’d hire him, if he gets good grades too? Jaehee Kang: Oh dear... Jumin Han: All you know to do is to gossip all day long. Don’t you have anything better to do? Jumin Han: Also, Y/N is just fine. And yes, she’s next to me. Y/N: Yep! I’m doing infinitely better than before. Thank you so much for worrying about me, I promise I will take care of myself from now on!! Y/N: *sent a selfie*
Y/N then got next to Jumin, taking off her sunglasses and gluing her cheek to his, grinning, one arm around his torso, to help herself stand on her tippy toes and reach his level, while the other was used to take a selfie.
Zen: Ohh, your dark circles are starting to disappear! And your skin isn’t as deathly pale! Y/N: Yeahh, I spent the whole day outside in the sun. It is incredibly refreshing. Yoosung: I hope you’re having fun at the beach! Did you get to swim yet? Y/N: No, not yet, but tomorrow it’s going to be even hotter than today, so I’ll definitely enjoy the water then! Jaehee Kang: Y/N...You look happy. I’m glad to see you smiling again. And you made Mr. Han smile too...That’s quite the feat. Y/N: ??? What do you mean? Jumin has a beautiful smile! Zen: Not more beautiful than mine, surely!  Zen: *sent a selfie* Jaehee Kang: I have been cleansed... 707: lololol here we go again. Y/N: You have a beautiful smile, Zen. But Jumin’s smiles are pure and rare, like the first snowdrop of Spring. Jumin: *smile sticker* Jumin: You heard her. Zen: *angry sticker* Zen: Did you steal her phone and write that yourself or what?! Jumin: No. Jumin: *sent a picture* Jumin: She’s by the shore, I’m still on the lounge chair.
Jumin took a picture of the girl who was staying with her feet in the water ankle-deep, looking into the horizon as the sun was setting and the sky was painted with all the colours of the twilight by angels. He could only look at how gorgeous she looked as she had her hands on her hat, to make sure the breeze won’t fly it away, and the way her sundress was gently swaying in the wind.
Yoosung: Ohhh, so pretty! I’d like to go on holiday to a place like that too, one day! Y/N: OMG Jumin!! Y/N: *embarrassed sticker*
Before she realised, Jumin was behind her, startling her unwillingly, as he prowled silently, like a feline.
“D-Don’t startle me like that!” she chuckled weakly, putting her hand on her chest where her heart would be. “That was not my intention. I just wanted to see you up up close again. The picture came up beautiful.” he said, taking off her sunglasses and hanging them from his Tshirt neck, loving to see all the emotions that her eyes betray so innocently. “I-I don’t know how to respond to that.” the girl blushed softly, looking away, trying to hide her face with the long ends of the hat. “You don’t have to say anything. I’m just glad that I can see you smile again...For me. You make my day brighter than this sun does. And I’m happy that you’re finally willing to rely on me to help you with your dream.” he smiled softly, putting a hand on her face, lifting her face up. “If I can make you happy, then I’m happy as well. Jumin, I...I love you. I know I said I didn’t want thing to be weird between us, but...I had to tell you. You deserve to know my feelings for you. They have been there for a while...” she closed her eyes, blushing even harder, only to make the man smile at her. “Good. Now that I know my feelings for you are reciprocated, I don’t have to stop myself from doing this.” Jumin hummed slightly, leaning down to capture the girl’s soft lips with his, giving her a sweet, gentle kiss, only for her to put her arms around his neck, deepening the kiss.
But then, the phones started beeping like crazy, startling and confusing the girl, until she looked at the chat and gasped, hiding her face with her hat.
“WHEN-...?! WHY?! H O W?!” she chirped in embarrassment, seeing a picture of them kissing in the group chat, while everyone was commenting on it. “If Zen wants to show off all the time, then why shouldn’t I as well?” he smirked softly, kissing her forehead to calm her down. “Y-You...Just...I don’t know how to reply to that either. You’re really something else.” she sighed dramatically, before chuckling and hugging him. “When you smile like that, you remind me of a kitten. And now you’re cuddling me like one. How cute.” he mused, putting his arms around her. “I love you.”

The witch’s teachings, lesson 4: Power and its price
Lyssa’s presence changed our day-to-day slightly, about one hour before meals the witch would ask one of us to do chores such as looking for food(I was more adept at gathering, roots and fruit, while Lyssa had an easier time hunting), and she would use the time to teach the other one.
What made me curious was that from what I’d seen, we were not being taught the same things, while I had by this point been Morgana’s apprentice for a few months and she’d taught me next to nothing about combat, though she’d given me a knife, mostly for cutting ingredients, I had yet to touch a sword. Meanwhile Lyssa was already about as good of a swordsman as any from my home town, though she’d prefered to use two shortswords instead of the witch’s one.
When asked about this during one of my own lessons, My master, her unequivocal tone giving an impression closer to a consultation with an ancient goddess than a questioning of a human teacher, told me “When you asked me to take you on, did you ask for my power? Was your wish to match me as a fighter, or as a scholar? What you begged me for was wisdom, so that’s what I am attempting to give you, knowledge of the properties of all sorts of natural and supernatural, one day you shall be able to see as deeply or more than I am into the forces most struggle to even comprehend. However, I am myself a multi-faceted creature, and what Lyssa needs from me isn’t the knowledge you crave, that won’t help her protect herself from greed, hate and weapons from people whose reason for attacking her can’t be circumvented without fighting back. Right now, she needs to become a warrior, she wants to become a guardian, so her mastery of the blade is more important than that over the land. Of course I want to have you know how to defend yourself and her know how to use subtler methods than swordfighting, but it is better to prioritize.”
While I took in her explanation, her expression softened as she sat down close to the fire and ushered me to do the same. She took a deep breath, then spoke once more “It is good that you asked me that, it reminded me of something I feel I should tell you, and I’ll explain later why I do not plan on doing the same for Lyssa yet,” she stared into the flames, “It’s about how I got these hands, and the power they hold.”
“I grew up in the village of Krymmen, a place that no longer exists, outside of the reach of the duke that owns this tenure, I do not know how  much you’ve heard about him, maybe less than I, since I assume his rule is all you’ve known, but the common way of doing things here and now hasn’t always existed. Where I was born there was no use for silver and gold except for fighting werewolves and making accessories, there was enough food and housing for all of us and all who contributed to the community had access to it. My function, much as it is now, was to protect people from supernatural threats and their effects on body and mind.”
“One day, emissaries from “duke Louis of Drakenguard”  appeared, we hosted our visitors well, interested in what knowledge they could have to share with us. But they were measuring us up, learning about our defenses and armed forces, making sure they could easily destroy us. They came back, with numbers and weapons, an emergency exodus was declared. Me and my comrades stayed behind to hold them back, we were fierce fighters, but there were too many of them, we drove them back, just barely, but I was the only survivor, and it would not be long before they caught up with the civilians after the next wave was done with me.
“So I got desperate,” she clenched her fist, “There was a legend in Krymmen, about a cave from which none who ventured returned, the stories told of a slumbering dragon, at least as large as an elephant and as smart as a person, I headed to the cave, planning to beg the beast to protect the people who had coexisted with it for all of our centuries long history.
“Once I arrived, I was awed by the creature’s bright red scales, gigantic wings and terrifying maw. However its eyes surprised me most of all, they were orange and slitted like those of a crocodile, but they regarded me  with such superiority, curious interest at best, like how a man may look at a cat. It gave me time to say my piece, but seemed to disregard it entirely, instead lazily turning to my sword and offering it’s own proposal. It’s deep grumble echoing through the cave’s chambers.
“I have no intention of concerning myself with the squabbles between you pitiful creatures. Still, I can feel some fire within you, if you wish for my assistance, prove to me you are worthy of my time,” it stood from the pile of bone and discarded armor where it sat, “If you are capable of landing a single blow upon my flesh, I shall grant you a morsel of my power.”
“For many moments it was all I could do to stand frozen still, its glare made it clear that the moment I moved forward, that could be the end of my life, still it was my only chance to protect the Krymmen people, and if my comrades could give their life for that before, so could I now. I started to dash forward, but the dragon’s claw was even faster than I could expect, I did my best to deflect it with my blade, but the force from the clash still sent me rolling over the ground. The dragon simply raised its head and looked down on me as I scrambled back onto my feet, as if waiting for me to continue the challenge it had issued. I felt as if it had held back on the last strike, trying to bring the most out of me, and to be honest, it made me furious, I was determined to prove the power of humanity.
“I sprinted forward, goading it into striking before quickly stepping back, then dashing ahead once more, It’s next attack I evaded by rolling behind a rock, using it for cover by crouching. The beast lowered its head, and I beheld it open it’s enormous jaws and a bright orange flame gather inside it, too wide to dodge to the side and too powerful for my stone cover to protect me. In a final desperate gambit I climbed onto the rock and, as it approached to launch its attack. I lept towards it, plunging my blade onto its snout with a fierce battlecry.
“The sword pierced only a few centimeters through  my foe’s scales, but it ceased its fire breathing, and for a few instants, we were both so still we could only hear the dimm whistle of the wind through the cave. I saw the dragon stare towards me with something entirely foreign in its eyes, recognition, perhaps even respect. It lowered me gently to the floor, backing away as I pulled my blade from its snout.
“Very well,”said the dragon, “you’ve proved yourself tenacious and brave beyond any human I’ve seen before. I shall offer you a magnanimous offer, accept the pact, and you will be given power over the most powerful element in creation. The flames that herald both oblivion and rebirth, there is but one condition.
“Though after such an arduous trial almost nothing could deter me from accepting, I still asked “What is the condition?”
“The dragon explained, “You will yourself become forever bound to the changing winds and the flicker of the flames. If you ever fall idle, without a mission or destination, the very powers you will be given shall turn agains you, destroying your body”
“I nodded, accepting these terms, “Very well,” spoke the dragon, “extend your arms, and the pact will be sealed,” I did as I was told, and did not back down, even when the beast opened its maw wide, waiting for a moment, as if precisely measuring  its position. Before snapping its jaws closed in but a split second. I felt immense pain, like my arms had been cut in half, before a powerful burning sensation accompanied by the same orange light Inside the dragon’s mouth I’d seen before. I clenched my teeth so as not to scream, and in a few seconds, the dragon released my arms, satisfied, revealing that, from the forearm down, my arms were now as black and hard as coal, and I could feel heat like never before emanating from them.
“You’ve risen closer to a dragon than most could ever hope, the last thing I have to give you is my name. Names have power, child, so when you wish to use your new power, remember the name Gorchfygwr and all flames shall obey you.” The dragon explained.
The witch clapped her hands and turned to me. “And that’s how I got these hands, I apologize for not telling you sooner, but I needed to be sure to not give information about the source of my power to someone who would get themselves killed trying to obtain them, or worse, who would be able to gain this sort of power and use it for evil. In time I learned more about pacts like these, they are the main way for humans to obtain power beyond our physical limitations, but, and you may consider this your fourth lesson, power always has a price, and with time I learned the dragon had truly been relatively generous with mine, likely because he had gotten his entertainment out of testing me first. Some creatures, like demons and fae may cause their lords to lose their minds or commit atrocities they could never imagine.”
I nodded in agreement. “I understand. There are some questions I wish to ask, if you’ll pardon my curiosity, What did you do after sealing your pact? Did you face the duke’s armies once again? And why did you not want Lyssa to know this story?” for all that her fierceness had unnerved me initialy, my “colleague” did certainly seem to have good motives, more surprisingly, she was gentler than I’d imagined, never once commenting on my obvious lack of strenght when compared to her and offering to guard me from possible dangerous animals when searching for food.
Morgana sighed and turned back towards the fire. “I killed them, I went back into my ruined village and I slaughtered wave after wave of those soldiers until the futility of expecting them to stop coming solidified in my mind. By now there was no way they’d catch up to what remained of my people, there was no longer any reason for fighting. I felt so purposeless I just… wandered. Eventually I learned that I could use the skills from my old profession to earn a living and help people still, and memorized the optimal routes I could use to travel from town to town.”
She continued, her head hung low, betraying a fatigue I hadn’t before seen. “I’ve been doing this for years, familiar, long enough to obtain a large arsenal of magic not as powerful as what I received from the pact, that’s how I could make you my familiar. In some way I feel I’ve been delaying an inevitable direct conflict with the duke, I mean, look at Lyssa! aren’t I one of the only people with a chance to stop this for good? As for why I’ve avoided informing Lyssa of the source of my flames, I have no doubt her reasons for fighting are good, but with her current fervor, I fear she may seek out a patron before she’s ready and put herself and others in danger, although I have a feeling she may inevitably attract the interest of one by living the eventful life she is currently seeking. It is a difficult balance I am attempting to strike, too soon and her haste may be her doom, too late and she won’t be aware of the consequences when she receives an offer.”
I was a bit hesitant to question my master’s judgement, but still I couldn’t help but ask “don’t you feel you should put a little more trust in her prudence?”
She turned to me and smiled. “That may be so, still It’s best to be cautious. Thank you for telling me this. It’s part of a familiar’s function to council the witch in times of decision. Now scram, you, I see Lyssa coming back and we’re gonna need some fresh water from that creek to cook the hares she brought,” she waved me away gently.
As I walked away, Lyssa greeted me, her muscles had been steadily growing more defined as she’d been training for combat, I also noticed she’d been binding her breasts recently and respected her commitment to agility. “Hey… cat, can I call you cat?” she asked, a bit embarassed, to which I smiled and nodded in agreement, “alright, cat, did Morgana say anything about me? I haven’t exactly been apprentice to a witch before, and she did tell me a familiar is something different, but you’re my best point of  comparison and I’d like to know if I’ve been doing well.”She seemed excited to compare our experiences, and I felt a pang of guilt about witholding some information from her.
“Don’t worry, she’s very impressed with your growth, thinks you’ll soon be a match for her at this rate, though your parry could use some work.” I answered, and it was true, despite me omitting the witch’s concerns about her impetuosity. “Now get going, master’s waiting for you and she doesn’t like to wait. .” I told her, continuing my towards the creek.
“You too.” She said, and I could tell my answer had made her happy.
