Merry Christmas
Tumblr media
Summary: It’s the most wonderful time of the year. You and Natasha are off to the annual Stark Christmas Party. Little does the team know that a special surprise awaits them.
Genre: Fluff
Pairings: Natasha x reader, Avengers x reader (platonic).
Word Count: 2.7k
Warnings: None
A/N: This is part 2 to Happy Thanksgiving! I recommend reading it first, but it can be read as a stand-alone story as well. I hope you enjoy!
“Be down in a minute, malyshka!” Natasha called from your bedroom.
You were standing in the kitchen eating peanut butter out of the jar topped with chocolate sauce. A “homemade Reese’s” you dubbed it. Your first pregnancy craving that had Nat popping down to the corner grocery store at 2 am for the dynamic duo of ingredients.
“No worries, love!” Already dressed for Tony’s annual Christmas party at the compound. Clad in a green Sequin-Lace Halter Twist-Neck Jumpsuit, your baby bump beginning to show.
The click of Natasha’s high heels signaled her arrival a few moments later in a sleek long-sleeved red scoop-back midi dress that hugged her in all the right places.
“Wow, Nat. You look beautiful. Red is most definitely your color,” you praised.
“So you prefer it over the black,” she smirked as she put on her earrings.
“I didn’t say that now, did I,” with a wink.
“The baby enjoying its homemade Reese’s?” grabbing her clutch.
“Very much! I was thinking,” Putting away the chocolate and peanut butter. “Tomorrow we could make fudge!”
“Ah, because the baby has such a sweet tooth?” Nat teased.
“Yes,” you giggled.
“Well, whatever the baby wants, I suppose,” wrapping her arms around you in a loving embrace before leaning down and kissing your stomach.
“You ready to drop the baby bombshell tonight?” Patting the top of Nat’s head.
“Yes, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous,” sighing as she stood up. These are the same people who freaked out when they found out Clint had a family. How are they going to handle this?”
“Like the amazing aunts and uncles they were meant to be,” grabbing Natasha’s hand. “Plus, I think announcing it with the Christmas crackers is a cute idea.”
“I hope so,” placing a soft kiss against your lips.
“Frankly, I’m more surprised Yelena hasn’t blabbed yet,” you said.
“Oh, that’s because I warned her if she told anyone I would make her run with me every morning at 5 am until the baby is born.”
“Well played,” high-fiving your wife.
“Thank you,” she smiled. “Now come on, let’s go get our holiday cheer on.”
*^~^*
The drive to the compound was even more beautiful during the holidays. A light snow fell as you passed house after house dressed in beautiful Christmas lights. Natasha placed her right hand on the center console. You softly intertwined your fingers with hers and placed a soft kiss to the back of her hand.
You are greeted by a rush of warm air upon entering the compound lobby. Natasha shook the delicate snowflakes out of your hair and off your coat. You both step onto the elevator and are welcomed by the soothing voice of FRIDAY.
“Merry Christmas, ladies. Welcome to the annual Stark Christmas party.”
“Merry Christmas, FRIDAY. How’s the party so far?” You asked as the hum the elevator carried you up to living quarters.
“The party is in full swing. Mr. Stark is currently treating guests to a medley of Christmas carols.
“Of course he is,” you giggled.
“You know, he only plays that baby grand piano when he gets a bit tipsy,” Nat said. “When we got home from our month-long undercover mission in Romania, he celebrated on the jet and then made us all listen to his rendition of Dancing Queen.”
“Aww, and I missed it!” you whined, feigning disappointment.
The elevator dinged and the doors opened to joyous noise and laughter. An abundance of greens, reds, gold, and silver flashing here and there, adding opulence and brightness. Classic poinsettias tied in tradition, and shiny bows and foiled paper glistened under the 12-foot tall Noble Fir Christmas tree, inviting their recipients to sneak one open before the actual day.
“Hey, the Romanoff’s are finally here!” Clint exclaimed as his kids rushed over to both of you.
Nate jumped into your wife’s arms as you hugged Lila and Cooper. It seemed like every time you saw the Barton kids they had grown a bit more. It was thanks to Banner and Cho that you were carrying a child that would be half yours and half Natasha’s. Looking at Clint and Laura’s kids and how they resembled their parents, you couldn’t wait to see what features your little plum would inherit from each of you.
“How’s my little namesake?” Natasha asked, kissing Nathaniel’s cheek. Have you been practicing the punch and kick combinations I taught you?”
“Practicing the what?” Laura asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Oh, nothing,” Natasha smirked as Nate giggled.
“You two look great, I love the green and red thing you’ve got going on,” Clint said.
“Thank you. Lovely Christmas sweater by the way. I especially love Rudolph’s glowing nose.” you pointed.
“Hey, the Barton’s are the cream of the crop when it comes to ugly Christmas sweaters.”
“Clearly,” Nat teased.
“I’ll take your coats,” Cooper offered.
“Why, thank you. What a gentleman,” you winked at Laura as you handed him yours and Natasha’s pea coats.
You scanned the room and noticed Wanda putting the finishing touches on trays of Christmas cookies. You put a hand on Nat’s shoulder and motioned toward the kitchen. She gave you a quick nod as you meandered over to the counter.
“Wanda, Wanda, Wanda… what do we have here?” you asked with a smirk.
“Y/N! It’s so good to see you,” wrapping you in one of her signature hugs that you loved so much. “This is my parents’ Christmas cookie recipe,” she proudly declared. “I convinced Tony and Pepper to let me handle the desserts this year. So, we’ve got cookies, the Viennese torte is in the fridge and the pumpkin pie is cooling.”
“Wow, you have been busy,” you smiled. “Anything I can do to help?”
“Yes, you can take a cookie and go mingle. I’ll be done in a few minutes,” handing you a charming little cookie decorated like Santa. You took a bite and couldn’t believe it. It was the best cookie you had ever tasted.
“Mhmm, Wanda! This is amazing,” you exclaimed
“That is why I will always vouch for homemade over store bought goodies. Now seriously, go mingle,” shooing you away.
You turned back around to see your wife sitting by the fireplace talking to Steve, champagne in hand. As you started to across the room you were intercepted by a festively-dressed Kate and Lucky.
“Y/N! Hey, oh my gosh, I haven’t seen you in so long! How are you?”
“I’m good! I see you and Lucky are enjoying the party,” petting the Golden Retriever.
“Absolutely, say hello to Santa Paws and Mrs. Claus!” Kate exclaimed. Unfortunately, we’ve lost Yelena. She’s our elf,” glancing around the room.
“Wait, Yelena’s dressed as an elf?” Eyes wide. “Oh, that’s fantastic.”
“Yeah, if you see her will you send her our way? We’re supposed to be taking the photo for our holiday card tonight.”
“Nothing would make me happier,” you smirked with a hand on Kate’s shoulder.
You bid the young archer and pooch farewell and rejoined your wife.
“Hey, deka,” Wrapping her arm around your waste.
“Y/N, I was just telling your wife that she needs to find her holiday spirit and come Christmas caroling with us next week,” Steve said.
“Natasha singing? I’m not sure that would be good for community morale,” you joked.
“Says the woman who performs one woman tributes to Harry Styles in the shower?” Nat giggled.
“Hey,” you said. “My rendition of Sign of the Times is highly praised, I’ll have you know,”
Tony and Pepper join your little huddle with Morgan in tow.
“Romanoffs! You have to try this Hot Buttered Rum,” Tony remarked.
“Oh, I love Hot Buttered Rum, but I think I’ll stick with sparkling cider tonight,” you said “Nat would probably love some though, right, love?”
“Sure,” grabbing the glass from Tony’s hand as Steve looked back at you curiously.
You peered down at Morgan who was sitting on the ottoman next to the fireplace. Ever since you found out you were pregnant you were drawn to children like never before.
“Hi, sweetheart!” you greeted the little Stark. “You look so pretty tonight,” kneeling down to the little girl’s level.
“Thank you, Aunt Y/N,” she grinned.
“Are you excited for Christmas?” You asked. “You are clearly at the top of Santa’s nice list this year.”
“Really?!” Morgan squealed.
“Oh, absolutely, I have a feeling the man in red is going to be very good to you this year,” you winked.
“Did you hear that Daddy? Aunt Y/N said that I’m on the top of the nice list!”
“I sure did, squirt. I didn’t realize Aunt Y/N was so tight with St. Nick,” eyeing you coyly.
“Oh yeah, we’re on a first name basis. I’m surprised you’re not?” Smirking at the billionaire. You loved Tony like a brother, but you enjoyed giving him crap.
“Trust me, Mrs. Romanoff,” Tony smirked. “I’m much closer to Santa than you are.”
“Really, do you have a direct line to the North Pole?” You countered.
“Are you having milk and cookies flown in from Holland? Because you know those are his favorite,” Tony said, raising an eyebrow at you.
“Ooookay, that’s enough,” your wife placing hands on your shoulders from behind. “You both know Santa. You both have giant egos. Merry Christmas,” Nat mocked. Come on Tony, let’s go grab some hors d'oeuvrs for our better halves. I’ll be right back, detka,” leading the billionaire toward the kitchen.
You couldn’t help but admire Natasha as she walked away. Looking back over her shoulder, she smiled at you with all the love in the world. You just about melted right there in front of the fireplace. Snapping out of your love daze, you noticed Pepper grinning at you.
“What?” you asked.
“Oh, nothing. I just can’t help but notice how glowing you look tonight,” as Morgan pulled her away towards Clint’s kids and Steve strolled away to join Bucky in conversation with Rhodes.
“Pssst… Pssst!”
You turned around just as a styrofoam snowball was about to hit you in face. You caught it in one swift motion.
“Nice catch,” a Russian voice said.
“Yelena, where are you?” Glancing around not seeing your sister-in-law.
“Over here,” poking her head out from the behind the seven-foot snowman next to the pool table.
“Oh, now don’t you look adorable as an elf,” you giggled.
“If you weren’t pregnant with my niece or nephew you would be hanging upside down from the rafters right now,” Yelena whispered.
“You know Kate and Lucky are looking for you, right?” you asked.
“Why do you think I’m hiding behind the giant snowman? Kate Bishop forced me to dress in this saccharin American Christmas costume and now she wants photographic evidence of it.”
“Because she loves you, silly,” smiling with your arms crossed over your chest.
“Detka, it’s time for dinner. Let’s go—“Natasha stopped dead in her tracks at the sight of her sister. “Oh my God,” she burst into laughter.
“Tred carefully, sestra,” Yelena threatened.
“No, I love it. I think this qualifies as new mission suit attire,” poking the bell dangling from her elf hat. “Maybe you can get Stark to upgrade this outfit with Widow Bites.”
“Do you have a death wish?” Yelena sneered.
“Come on, you adorable elf, it’s time for dinner,” placing an arm around your best friend’s shoulder.
*^~^*
You took your seat next to your wife at the Astoria Grand Giovani dining table. Natasha quietly squeezed your hand. You looked over with a shy smile and a festive blush on your cheeks.
Pepper stood up from her seat next to Tony at the head of the table. “Before we enjoy this lovely holiday feast, I just wanted to take a moment to tell you how grateful we are that you’re all here,” grasping Tony’s hand. “Everyone in this room knows how precious life is and we don’t take a moment of it for granted. We love you and Merry Christmas.”
“Here, here!” Thor declared a couple seats down from you as glasses clinked around the table.
A traditional Christmas dinner soon filled your plate. Roasted turkey with all the trimmings. Home baked bread, mashed potatoes and garden veggies gently roasted, drizzled in balsamic vinegar. The group drank, were merry, and told the most terrible of jokes.
Pregnancy mood swings were becoming commonplace and as the dinner wore on, you suddenly found yourself overwhelmed with emotion at the sight of your extended family enjoying the holiday season together.
“Y/N, are you okay?” Carol looked at you with concern in her eyes from across the table.
“Oh, yeah” dabbing at the corner of your eyes with your napkin. “I’m fine.”
“The holidays always make her a bit emotional,” Natasha offered laying her head comfortingly on your shoulder.
After dinner you helped Wanda serve the desserts. The Christmas cookies took their place in the center of the table, flanked by the Viennese torte and the pumpkin pie. Coffee and dessert wine circulated around the table.
The group of full bellies and ever so slightly sleepy eyes then made their way to the living room to relax. Christmas music softly enveloped the room as the kids were discussing what they hoped Santa was going to bring them this year.
“Okay, Kate Bishop. Let’s get this picture over with. I want to put on my pajamas,” Yelena announced as she stood from the sofa.
“Yay!! Okay, don’t move. Lucky! Here boy,” calling the dog who promptly romped over. “Vision, can you take the picture?”
“Of course Ms. Bishop.” Taking the Canon EOS R-50 from the archer.
“It is customary to say cheese before a picture, but since it is Christmas time perhaps you should say mistletoe?”
“Just take the picture,” Yelena deadpanned
“Mistletoe!” Kate yelled.
“We’re going to get one of these cards right?” Looking at your wife.
“I had Kate put us down for two,” she smirked.
*^~^*
As night fell, you rested your weary head on Nat’s lap as she ran her fingers through your hair.
Natasha looked at her watch. “You ready to drop the baby bomb?”
“As ready as I’ll ever be. I’ll get the Christmas crackers,” rising from the sofa.
“Umm, everyone. Y/N and I have a special gift for you all,” your wife announced nervously as you passed out the gold and silver novelties to the team.
“Christmas crackers? I have to be honest, I was hoping for something a bit more extravagant… Oww!” Tony whined, as Pepper pinching him on the arm.
You smiled with nervous anticipation as you reached for Natasha. The snap of the festive crackers echoed across the room. Clint was the first to reach inside and remove the tiny gift. A small round ceramic white ornament tied to a red ribbon appeared in his hand. Lila, Cooper, and Nate huddled around their dad to get a glimpse as Clint read the inscription.
“Uncle Clint?” Looking up at Natasha in shock.
“No way!” Sam shouted.
Wanda, Carol, and Kate all screamed at the sight of their own ornaments. Their names adorned with the title of Aunt.
“This is joyous news!” Thor crowed.
Pepper got up immediately and embraced you in a warm hug as Laura did the same with Natasha.
“How far along are you?” Wanda asked.
“Almost three months,” Yelena cut in.
“You knew?! Why didn’t you tell me?” Kate shouted; slapping her girlfriend on the arm.
“Because I want to sleep in!” Yelena shouted.
“I’m so happy for you, Nat,” Steve kissing her on the cheek.
Bucky wrapped his arms around you with a soft kiss to the top of your head.
“You ready to be Uncle Bucky?” Your eyes meeting his gaze.
“Oh God,” his face like a deer in the headlights.
“You’ll be great, Buck,” you giggled.
Bruce and Helen embraced Natasha in a tandem hug.
“I’m so relieved everyone knows,” Helen said turning to you. “Now we can openly discuss your pregnancy. Have you been continuing with your prenatal vitamins?”
And remember, you have an appointment on Friday,” Bruce interjected.
“Yes and yes,” you said as Natasha placed a soft kiss to your cheek and then another to your belly.
Tony walked up to you with that signature smirk on his face. You mentally prepared yourself for a signature Stark one-liner or some stupid joke. Instead, he took you by surprise when he wrapped you in a warm embrace.
“Congratulations, Romanoff. Looks like you do know Santa best.”

I'm so sick of Sam being left out of What if...? (In general, and also to legitimise Peggy as cap)
Is it because they think that without Steve and the morning run meet-cute, that there's no way to recruit Sam? Be real. Ffs.
Because with the tiniest shred of imagination they could make it work.
Take Rhodey. In Iron Man 1 he's the Air Force liaison for research and development, right? He's got a background in aerospace engineering, right? So presumably he'd know about the EXO Falcon program, yeah?
So when a world crisis is underway and the good guys need a little back up, or even pararescue to help civilians, Rhodey could be the one to say 'I know a guy.. Let's call in some help'.
If these are all alternate timelines you could even bring in both Sam and Riley, cos maybe Riley never died and that's why Sam is still active and on-call. A bonus great opportunity to see more of Sam's history and wingman dynamic (which was important enough to make him quit when Riley was killed.)
Point is, if the show creators wanted to, they would.

The Raft.
That’s where they sent you after they arrested you in Germany. The fucking Raft.
You haven’t even seen Wanda since you were handed your very unstylish new clothes and they made you change.
You got separated from her when they took you to your cell between Scott's and Sam's. You dread what they're going to do to her, but you're powerless to stop them.
You sit on the ground of your cell and don’t move from there, barely registering what happens around you until the sound of clapping snaps you out of your trance.
“The Futurist, gentlemen!” Clint shouts but you still don’t move, just listening to the scene. “The Futurist is here! He sees all! He knows what's best for you, whether you like it or not.”
“Give me a break, Barton.” You hear Tony say and almost show some emotion, but stop yourself. “I had no idea they'd put you here. Come on.”
You hear Clint spit and then say “Yeah, well, you knew they'd put us somewhere, Tony.”
“Yeah, but not some super-max floating ocean pokey. You know, this place is for maniacs. This is a place for…”
“Criminals?” Clint interrupts him. “Criminals, Tony. Think that's the word you're looking for. Right? That didn't used to mean me. Or Sam, or Y/N, or Wanda. But here we are.”
“Because you broke the law.” Tony says.
“Yeah.” Clint says back and starts chanting “La la la la la” while Tony talks, making you grin slightly.
“I didn't make you. You read it, you broke it.” Tony keeps talking. “Alright, you're all grown up, you got a wife and kids. I don't understand, why didn't you think about them before you chose the wrong side.” he says and your face falls again immediately, knowing Tony went too far.
“You gotta watch your back with this guy.” Clint says before slamming his hands on the bars angrily. “There's a chance he's gonna break it!”
“Hank Pym always said, you never can trust a Stark.” You hear Scott say from the cell on your right.
“Who are you?” Tony says, his voice closer to you than before, and you can hear Scott mumbling “Come on, man.”
Tony gets to your cell and sees you sitting on the ground, hugging your knees tight to your chest, your head resting back on the wall while you look straight ahead.
Tony is nothing short of shocked when he sees your face all beat up and bruised, your arm bandaged with blood seeping through it showing just how big and deep the cut is, all courtesy of Ayo.
“I never wanted to see you like this...” Tony says softly but you don’t even react to his words.
He’s standing in front of you but it’s like he’s not even there, like you’re looking right through him to something more interesting behind him.
Tony sighs and shakes his head before moving to Sam’s cell.
“How's Rhodes?” Sam asks right away.
“They're flying him to Columbia Medical tomorrow. So… fingers cross.” Tony answers and you close your eyes, grateful that he’s still alive at least. “What do you need? They feed you yet?”
“You're the good cop now?” Sam asks almost in disbelief.
“I'm just the guy who needs to know where Steve went.” Tony answers calmly.
“Well, you better go get a bad cop, because you're gonna have to go Mark Fuhrman on my ass to get information out of me.”
“Oh, I just knocked the 'A' out of their 'AV'.” Tony says, much too playfully for your taste. “We got about 30 seconds before they realize it's not their equipment.”
You furrow your eyebrows at his next sentence. “Just look. Because that is the fellow who was supposed to interrogate Barnes. Clearly, I made a mistake. Sam, I was wrong.”
Your eyes snap open at his apology and, even though you can’t see either of them, you know Sam’s feeling the same way as you, which is confirmed by his next sentence. “That's a first.”
“Cap is definitely off the reservation but he's about to need all the help he can get. We don't know each other very well. You don't have to-”
“Hey, it's alright.” Sam interrupts him, then you hear him sigh and after a little pause he says “Look, I'll tell you… but you have to go alone and as a friend.”
“Easy.” Tony says and Sam proceeds to tell him all about the Hydra base in Siberia and the other supersoldiers.
When Tony leaves, Sam once again tries to make sure you’re okay even if he hasn’t had luck at getting an answer out of you since you got here.
He knocks twice on the wall between you two then pauses and then knocks three more times fast before talking, a thing you two started doing since you both moved into the Avengers Compound so you would know it was the other knocking right away. “Are you okay?”
You don’t answer him and can hear him sighing before continuing talking.
“Look, I’m sorry you got caught up in this and-”
“I don’t regret the choice I made, Sam.” You interrupt him before he can finish his sentence, speaking up for the first time since you got arrested at the airport. “As much as this sucks, it was the right thing to do. I know it was.”
You don’t say anything else. Sam can tell you mean it and he knows better than to push you.
“They’ll be okay.” He says after a moment of silence and then lets you be.
You know he means Steve, Bucky and Tony but you can’t help but think he’s trying to reassure you that Bucky’s gonna be fine.
And you can only hope that he’s right.
-
A couple of weeks after Tony’s visit there’s a commotion in the prison.
You haven’t so much as made a sound since that day, aside from your daily knock on the wall between you and Sam so he can make sure you’re okay, knowing you well enough to know you don’t want to talk but still wanting to check in.
But you can’t help but let out a loud gasp when you see Steve just standing in front of your cells.
You look around when the cell doors open and you hesitantly get up from the floor and walk towards Steve. He hugs Sam, then you, then Clint and then pats Scott on the back, but doesn’t linger long before he’s guiding you towards another level where Wanda is.
You get to her just as the door to her cell opens and you rush inside with Clint to take off her collar while he takes off her straightjacket. You hug her tightly and wrap your arm around her with Clint to help her move you since she looks a little worse for wear.
You manage to move through the prison without problems. You have to hand it to Steve, he’s a hell of a criminal.
When you get to the landing pad you see the Quinjet ready for take off and you all rush inside just to see Bucky at the commands and you smile brightly at the sight.
You have no time to comment, though, as Sam shouts “What are you waiting for?! Go!”
Bucky rolls his eyes but calmly says “We have one more coming.”
You frown. One more? You turn to Steve confusedly but before you can ask anything you can see blond hair darting into the Quinjet and then Natasha’s there.
Bucky instantly takes off and you all take seats and buckle up.
There’s a moment of silence while everyone processes what just happened, but you break it while looking at Natasha that’s sitting directly in front of you.
“Are we gonna talk about the hair?” You ask arching your eyebrow with a smirk.
She groans in annoyance and you can hear the others chuckling while she says “We are not.”
-
After a few hours you all get to a safehouse and Steve ushers you in before showing you around.
It’s not bad: a secluded cabin with three bedrooms, not too big but Steve assured you you wouldn’t be staying there long anyway. Which makes sense, you're on the run now so this is just temporary.
After the tour Bucky approaches you in the living room and only then you notice he’s missing his metal arm.
“You flew the jet with only one arm? That’s impressive…” You can’t help yourself as you reach to touch his left shoulder, your eyes fixated on it. But stop on your tracks when you feel his right hand carefully cupping your cheek.
Your eyes snap up to his and you can see him thoroughly inspecting the wounds in your face that are still healing a little. He grimaces when he looks down at your bandaged arm and whispers “I’m sorry…”
“It’s nothing I can’t handle, Sergeant.” You smile softly at him and put your hand over his still on your cheek, trying to reassure him that you’re fine.
“I bet you can, doll.” He chuckles.
You’re too busy staring at each other to notice everyone’s attention is on you until Steve clears his throat with an apologetic look on his face.
“We need to go, Buck.” He says and you look confusedly between the two men.
“I’m going back into cryo.” Bucky clarifies for you.
“Oh.” Is all you can say and your eyes widen for a second before you force yourself to put on a more neutral face.
“It’s okay.” He smiles at you, but you feel like he’s trying to convince himself as much as you. “It’s nothing I can’t handle, doll.”
You try your best to smile and not look too bummed out. “I bet you can, Sergeant.”
You hesitate for a moment before surprising him, the others and even yourself by giving him a hug. He hesitates too before delicately hugging you back and, after a moment, you pull away.
He smiles at you with a faint blush and you smile back, watching him walk to the door.
Steve passes you on his way to the door and kisses your forehead, whispering “He’ll be okay” before saying goodbye to the rest of the team, assuring you that he’ll be back soon. Then he also goes through the door and soon both the supersoldiers are gone.
You turn around with a sigh and see Sam, Natasha and Clint standing there, grinning at you, Wanda and Scott looking more compassionate than teasing.
You narrow your eyes at the first three and say sternly “Not. A. Word.” punctuating every word by pointing threateningly at each of them.
They raise their hands in mock surrender while snickering but thankfully don’t say anything and everyone just scatters around the safehouse.
You see the Quinjet depart from the window and try your best to look at the bright side: This isn’t forever, you’ll see him again.
Right?

One day, we’ll discuss how fandoms have a tendency to attach hyper masculine traits to black characters. More especially if it’s in a same-sex relationship with a white character, no matter how soft canonically the black character is.
There is this an errant need to always attach “protector“ or “the strong one“ title to black characters, and it’s even worse when they are portrayed by darker skinned black people.
It happens with Finn and Poe in the Star Wars sequel trilogy fandom. Finn is always the one who must defend or console or step up for Poe, even though he’s a 24 year old who was stolen from his family, and turned into a soldier against his will as a child, and then thrust into a war, which, he did not have to fight in and could’ve run from. However, he is the one who must always protect the “softer“ Poe.
It happened in the First Kill fandom with Juliette and Calliope. Calliope was attached hyper masculine traits even though we’ve seen her dress in “feminine“ ways and carries herself in a “more feminine“ manner. However, she is the one who has the job of protecting Juliette in a fandom eyes.
We have it with Devon and Jake in Chucky, even though they equally fight to protect one another. Devon is always portrayed by fandom, as having to be the one who “protects“ or “consoles” and is always there for Jake meanwhile fans rarely ever give scenarios where it could be the other way around. Canonically Devon and Jake protect each other as equal as possible. However, you could never tell from fandom speaks of them. Devon always has to be the protector. Devon is always be the aggressor. Devon must always be the one who looks after Jake.
Don’t get me started on how Interview With The Vampire fandom attached Louis is “the man of the household” connotations when placed against Lestat even though the show itself tells you HE’S the housewife, and we see who really has the power between the two of them, but it is so rarely reflected in how fans write and speak of them. LOUIS is the soft-spoken, LOUIS is the one who needs the constant protection, LOUIS is the one who is insecure overtly however, it is almost never reflected in how fans engage the characters.
And if I were to get into how they’re almost always treated by fans as cruel whenever they do not agree with their white partners actions, or they do something for themselves or how they are never given empathy that black fans don’t have to fight for them to be given, or they are held to a much higher standard than their partner, I could be here all day.

The Doting Tree

Summary: During your visit to your grandmother at her assisted living community, you learn that Bucky has been regularly volunteering there as a part of his therapy sessions with Dr. Raynor.
Pairings: Bucky x Platonic reader
Genre: Fluff
Word Count: 3k
Warnings: None
A/N: Who doesn't want to see Bucky healing?
"Ms. Y/L/N, Mr. Stark requests your presence in his lab," Friday announced, pulling you out of your intense focus.
"Can it wait, FRIDAY? I'm swamped with overdue mission reports here," you replied, shuffling through the stack of papers on your desk.
“Mr. Stark says you have a phone call,” FRIDAY responded.
“A phone call?” you asked, puzzled, picking up your phone. “No, I don't.”
“In his lab, Ms. Y/L/N,” FRIDAY said.
"Okay,” you said as you rubbed your tired eyes. “Tell him I'm on my way.”
Walking into Tony's lab, you found the genius hunched over his desk, tinkering with one of his holographic interfaces. His phone was propped between his ear and shoulder.
“Really? I had no idea,” Tony said with a surprised look. “Y/N is so at ease on the motorcycle you would never know she didn't learn to ride a two-wheeler until she was nine.”
Your eyes widened. "Oh my God. Who are you talking to?"
"One moment, ma'am," Tony said before placing the phone against his chest.
"It’s your grandmother," Tony said. "She called the front desk trying to reach you, and they patched her through to me."
"What? Why didn't they call me?" you said, reaching for the phone as Tony pulled it away.
"Because this is way more fun," Tony smirked.
"Gimme the phone!" You snapped.
Tony placed a hand on your forehead to hold you at arm's length like an annoying older brother while putting the phone back to his ear.
"Y/G/N, your granddaughter just walked in. So, I’m going to pass you over to her," Tony said. "No, don't be silly. It's no problem. I enjoyed talking with you, too. Feel free to call back anytime. My pleasure, ma'am. Bye-bye."
You sighed as the billionaire finally handed over his phone, walking back toward the pane-glass windows for some privacy.
"Hi, Grandma," you chirped.
"Hello, dear, so good to hear your voice," your grandmother said.
"How did you end up on the phone with Mr. Stark?" you asked.
"I accidentally deleted your cell phone number, but your mom has your workplace down on this list she made, so I called information and then was connected to your lovely boss," your grandma explained.
"Ah, I see. Well, he’s not technically my boss, more like an annoying man-child who pays for everything," Smirking back at Tony and sticking your tongue out.
Your grandma asked, 'What is this I hear about you riding a motorcycle?”
"Oh, no need to worry. I’m a professional, and it's part of my job," you reassured her.
"Still," your grandma began. "I hope you're wearing a helmet."
"Always, Grandma, don't worry,” you fibbed. “So, how are you?” Do your best to shift the conversation away from your dangerous life as an Avenger.
"I’m good, sweetheart. I'm just wondering when you're going to visit me. It's been a while since I’ve seen you,” your grandma asked.
Your heart broke at her words. Your grandma lives in an assisted living community near the compound called The Doting Tree. You did your best to see her often, but the unpredictable nature of your work made regular visits difficult.
“I know; I’m sorry. Things have been hectic lately, and I just got home from a work trip a few days ago. How about I stop by tomorrow around noon?" you asked.
“That would be great," she exclaimed. "See you then!"
"Okay, bye," you said, hanging up Tony’s phone.
You gave Tony his phone back, and he handed you a hundred-dollar bill in exchange.
“What's this for?” you asked.
“I may be an annoying man-child, but even I know you treat Grandma like a queen,” Tony quipped with a wink.
*^~^*
The following day, you joined the rest of the team for breakfast. Wanda had made her special chocolate chip pancakes and fresh orange juice for everyone. You sat beside Bucky and began squeezing Maple syrup over your pancakes.
Pepper set a plate in front of Morgan and sat beside Tony. "So, what's everyone got lined up for today?"
"Nat and I are getting the recruits up to speed," Steve replied, digging into his pancakes.
“That sounds interesting,” Pepper said.
"It would be interesting if they paid attention this time," Nat remarked, downing the last of her orange juice.
"I always paid attention," you declared confidently.
"Sure, Y/N, you ran those extra laps after training at Nat’s request just for fun," Maria teased.
"Yelena and I are off to an advanced obedience class with Lucky and Fanny," Kate said. "This week, it's all about the army crawling!"
"By the end of the training, they'll be more mission-ready than your little recruits, Natasha," Yelena teased as she cut into her pancakes.
Nat leaned over and flicked her sister's arm.
"Ow, son of a—"
"Language!" Steve interjected.
Yelena was about to retort, but then she caught Morgan's smile and shut her mouth.
"I’m supposed to meet with Secretary Ross, but I'd much rather catch the new Godzilla vs. Kong movie. Anyone up for it?" Rhodes suggested.
"I'm in!" Sam exclaimed. "How about you, Buck?"
"Can't make it; I'm tied up," Bucky replied, sipping his orange juice.
“Come on, man, how often do we blend in with the crowd?" Sam quipped.
"I can't, Sam," Bucky replied with a shrug.
"Your loss," Sam retorted. "What about you, Y/N?"
"I'd love to, but I promised my grandma a visit," you replied.
"That's thoughtful of you, Y/N," Wanda chimed in.
"Oh, that reminds me, guess who didn't learn to ride a bike until they were nine?" Tony butted in enthusiastically.
You rolled your eyes. “And that's my cue to leave," you said, getting up. "Catch you all later.”
*^~^*
You made great use of Tony's money by treating your grandma to a lovely bouquet of roses and a box of her favorite chocolates. When you arrived at The Doting Tree, the scent of Fabuloso greeted you, mixing with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee from the communal area. Passing through the lobby, you exchanged a warm smile and a wave with Joan, the friendly receptionist stationed behind the oak desk.
You knocked eagerly on the door of room 508, and the sound of your grandmother's footsteps grew louder before she swung open the door.
"Y/N!" she exclaimed.
"Hey, grandma," you greeted her with a smile. "These are for you," you said, handing her the roses and chocolates.
"Oh, you didn't have to, sweetheart," she replied, taking her gifts.
You hugged her and were instantly transported back to his childhood. Her warm embrace was a comfort you didn't know you were missing.
"Please, come on in, Y/N," she said as she broke the hug.
As your grandma whipped up a delightful batch of creamy, rich hot chocolate, the cozy aroma filled the room, enveloping you in warmth and comfort. You lost track of time, immersed in lively conversations and shared memories as you leisurely walked down memory lane. She asked about your work, and you carefully selected the most positive stories to share: the most recent Stark Gala and the Avengers community outreach efforts. You wouldn't dream of telling her about the near miss on your last mission when Nat's impressive scissor-leg neck grab saved you from a potentially fatal situation.
I can't believe how quickly time has flown by," your grandma exclaimed, glancing at the clock. "Movie night starts downstairs in fifteen minutes."
"Oh, in that case, I'll leave you to get ready," you replied, getting up.
"Nonsense," she insisted. "I'd love for you to join me. Tonight is Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, a classic from the Golden Age of Hollywood."
You quickly checked your phone and were relieved to see no missed calls or texts from Fury, Maria, or Steve.
"Great, I've never seen it, and I’m free for the rest of the day," you said.
"Wonderful, let’s go," your grandma replied.
*^~^*
When you and your grandmother arrived in the small community theater, the Doting Tree staff handed out popcorn and queued up the movie. You followed your grandma to two empty seats near the end of the row.
Hi, Y/G/N, I was hoping to see you here tonight," the brunette woman with half glasses beside her confessed.
"I wouldn't have missed this for anything. You know Jimmy Stewart is my favorite!" your grandma proclaimed. "Oh, Betty, this is my granddaughter Y/N, she's one of those Avengers!" she proudly introduced.
You felt slightly embarrassed by the attention but extended your hand to Betty. "Hi, Betty. It's great to meet you."
"It's lovely to meet you, dear. Y/G/N has told me so much about you!" Betty said.
"All good, I hope?" you joked.
"Of course. I don't know how you all do it, but thank you for everything you've done."
"It's my honor, ma'am,” you said.
"Excuse me?" a man in a sweater vest behind you said, catching your attention. "I couldn't help but overhear. You mentioned you're one of the Avengers?"
"That's right," you replied.
"Do you happen to know James? He's one of our volunteers. My buddy Walter swears he's an Avenger."
"James?" you asked, puzzled. "We don't have anyone named—"
"Alright, folks," a familiar voice interrupted.
"Bucky," you whispered to yourself in surprise.
Your friend stood at the front of the room, looking effortlessly stylish in a casual navy crew neck shirt, perfectly fitted jeans, and trendy sneakers. His beaming smile transformed his entire appearance, making him almost unrecognizable.
"Tonight's movie is one of my favorites, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," Bucky announced, clapping his hands together. "Jimmy Stewart was one of my favorite actors when I was a kid."
"Not to mention Jean Arthur!" someone shouted from the back row, and the room erupted in laughter.
“Alright, Stacy, can you turn off the lights, please?” Bucky asked one of the staff members.
As the idealistic young Jefferson Smith was appointed to the United States Senate, your attention continually drifted to Bucky. You observed as he quietly passed a box of Nestle crunch bites down the row to one of the residents and whispered something to the woman beside him, who laughed in response.
*^~^*
When the credits rolled, and the lights came on in the theater, you lingered at the back of the room while your grandmother caught up with her friends. Perhaps it was the spy-like instincts that Natasha had instilled in you, but you couldn’t take your eyes off him. You were captivated by the transformation in his demeanor. The man who once seemed only to wear a scowl now appeared happier than you had ever seen him.
You walked over slowly as he was engrossed in conversation with a man you recognized as Richard Swanson. According to Joan, he was one of The Doting Tree’s oldest residents in time and age. Tall and slender, with a confident posture that hinted at a lifetime of discipline and care, he still boasted a thick mane of hair that belied his age. The strands, once a rich chestnut, now shimmered with a distinguished silver hue, the only overt sign of the passing years.
"What unit were you in, Barnes?" Mr. Swanson asked.
"107th Infantry Regiment, sir," Bucky replied.
"No kidding?” said Mr. Swanson. “I was in the 103rd."
"I remember that regiment," Bucky said, snapping his fingers. "You were guarding the Trisssana Bridge, right?"
"That's right," Mr. Swanson replied. “My cousin was in the 107th Regiment. Maybe you knew him? Tim Dugan.”
"Wow," Bucky sighed, his voice trailing off as he paused to reflect. "Tim Dugan. I haven't heard that name in almost 80 years," Bucky said, his eyes distant with memories. "I did know him. He was a good man," Bucky reminisced, a hint of wistfulness in his voice.
He was indeed," Mr. Swanson sighed, his tired eyes reflecting the long day he had endured. The elderly gentleman checked his antique pocket watch. "I've got to get going. It's almost past my bedtime," he chuckled softly as he patted Bucky on the shoulder with a sense of fondness. "See you next time, Barnes."
"See you, Mr. Swanson," Buck called out, his voice carrying a tinge of warmth and respect.
"Bucky?" you said softly, careful not to startle him as you approached.
He turned at the sound of your voice, his eyes meeting yours with surprise. "Y/N? What are you doing here? I thought you were visiting your grandmother today?"
"I am; she lives here," you explained, a gentle smile gracing your lips.
"What are you doing here?" you asked, your curiosity piqued.
Bucky took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, the weight of his thoughts evident in the furrow of his brow. "Alright, look,” running his hand through his hair nervously. “Dr. Raynor thought it would be good for me to volunteer here. Spend some time with people from my generation," he said. "I resisted at first, but now..." he paused, looking around at the bustling activity of the assisted living community. "It's nice.”
"That's awesome, Buck. It's clear that the residents appreciate having you around, but why didn't you mention it to us?" You inquired.
"I just didn't want to deal with the inevitable jokes and questions from everyone," he explained.
"Oh, come on, Bucky. It wouldn't have been that bad. They would have been supportive," you reassured.
"After you left, Tony told the bike story and bought you a kid’s bicycle as a joke," Bucky deadpanned.
"Jackass," you remarked dryly.
"See," Bucky declared.
"But a supportive jackass, Buck. We all give each other shit, but at the end of the day, we're a family," you insisted. "Everyone would get it."
"Maybe," he mused. "When I'm here, I'm not an Avenger, The Winter Soldier, The White Wolf. Hell, I’m not even Bucky."
"I've noticed that, James," you said with a smirk.
Before he could respond, your grandma and her friend Betty strolled over to where you were standing.
“James, I just had to tell you how much I enjoyed tonight's movie. You have impeccable taste,” Betty said, touching his metal arm.
“Thanks a lot,” Bucky replied.
“Will you join us for our knitting class next week?” she asked eagerly.
“Work can be unpredictable, but I'm planning on it,” he responded.
“Wonderful!” Betty exclaimed. “I've been knitting a scarf for you, honey.”
Bucky blushed. “Oh, thank you. I can't wait to see it.”
"I see you’ve met James, Y/N,” your grandma said. “We’ve so enjoyed having him here the last few months.”
“Oh,” you said, looking between Bucky and your grandmother. “Yeah, I just had to come up and tell him how much I loved the movie, too.”
“Right,” Bucky said. “I’m glad you enjoyed it.”
“Well, I’m feeling a bit tuckered out, Y/N,” your grandmother said. I think I'll call it a night.”
“Okay,” you said. “I'll walk you back to your room.”
“Okay, goodnight, James,” your grandmother said.
“Goodnight, Y/G/N,” Bucky replied.
You turned back toward him before following your grandma out of the room and whispered, “Don’t leave. I'll be down in a few minutes.”
Bucky nodded in agreement.
*^~^*
As you stepped off the elevator and entered the lobby, the warm glow of the chandeliers illuminated the spacious communal room. Your eyes scanned the area, searching for Bucky. After a moment, you spotted him sitting on the plush sofa, engrossed in a copy of Lord of the Rings, which he had plucked from the nearby shelf.
Sitting beside him, you couldn't help but ask, "So, what do people think James does for a living?"
With a half-smile, he replied, "Well, those who don't know who I am think I’m a mechanic at that garage on Wilshire."
The image of Bucky as a mechanic made you chuckle, and you leaned in to hear more.
"The ones who do, like Mr. Swanson, don't give a damn about who I am or who I‘ve been," he continued, returning the book to the shelf. "All they care about is living each day to the fullest."
As you silently nodded, you reflected on his words, feeling the weight of the conversation settle in. "I understand, Buck," you said, patting his thigh. "I'm glad you're finding fulfillment here, and you can trust me to keep this between us."
"Thank you," he sighed, a sense of relief in his voice.
"Let’s go home," Bucky said, a hint of determination in his tone.
As you both said goodbye to Joan in the lobby, you stepped out into the refreshing early evening breeze.
"Alright, see you at home," you said, heading towards the bus stop.
"You took the bus here?" Bucky inquired.
"Yeah, just didn't feel like driving today," you replied.
“Want a ride? I've got Nat's motorcycle," he offered, nodding towards the bike.
You arched an eyebrow, "Does she know you have it?" You knew Natasha didn't just lend her bike to anyone. You had learned that the hard way during one of your early missions together.
"Yep, she allows me to borrow the motorcycle in exchange for helping with recruit training," Bucky explained as he slipped on his leather jacket.
"Alright, I'll take your word for it," you agreed.
As you were getting ready to hop on the back of the motorcycle, you spotted the extra helmet hanging on the back.
“Really?” Bucky quipped. “You never wear a helmet out in the field.”
“I know,” glancing back at The Doting Tree, “I just want to keep a promise to my grandmother,” you said with a smirk.
“Good call,” he replied with a grin.
You fastened the helmet and hopped on the back of the bike, wrapping your arms around Bucky’s waist. With a twist of the throttle, the bike roared to life as Bucky revved up the engine. Together, you both zoomed out of the parking lot, heading back toward the compound with a newfound sense of camaraderie and understanding.

Anywhere but Westview: alternate futures for Wanda if someone, ANYONE, had actually looked out for her after Endgame:
Clint takes her in and she lives with him and his family, eventually meeting Kate and Yelena
She throws in with Sam and Bucky and helps out against the Flag Smashers
She ends up bonding with Peter Parker and eventually accompanies him against Mysterio and the Multiverse (also, I only just thought of this, but Wanda meeting Quentin Beck would be pretty interesting, as he could try to sway her with their mutual hatred of Tony).
She accompanies Steve to put back the Stones and convinces him to return to the present instead of going back to the 40s.
T’Challa and Shuri, feeling guilty over not being able to save Vision, invite her to stay in Wakanda, and she eventually helps Shuri against Namor.
Peter Quill invites her to join the Guardians because he wants a buffer between Thor and himself and she ends up becoming close with the crew, especially Rocket and Nebula. (While I would love to imagine her written into Volume 3, I respect Gunn too much to pollute his story.)
Scott asks her if she wants to meet Cassie, and she ends up bonding with the Lang family, eventually going with them to the Quantum Realm and battling Kang
Bruce offers her help to make amends between the two of them, and she goes with him to Sakaar
Strange is fascinated by her powers and invites her to Kamar-Taj
Rhodey, seeking to make amends with her in a way Tony never wanted to, offers her a place to stay.
If anyone wants to try their hand at making one of these a full fanfic story, be my guest.

You get to the 6th level of the parking garage at the Leipzig/Halle airport and Steve parks next to a van and you all get out.
Steve gets closer to the van, followed by Sam while you stay behind with Bucky, both of you leaning on the car as you stand on the passenger’s side to be able to see over the car because you’re just that short.
You hear a little snicker from Bucky and look at him with your eyes narrowed as he seems amused by the sight but doesn’t say anything. Your attention goes back to the van as Clint loudly opens the side door.
“What timezone is this?” Scott asks, clearly disoriented as he gets out.
“Come on.” Clint encourages him and pushes him slightly towards Steve. “Come on.”
Scott walks to Steve and shakes his hand with an amazed look. “Captain America.”
“Mr. Lang.” Steve politely says as he shakes his hand.
“It’s an honor.” He says in awe. “I’m shaking your hand too long.” You try your best not to laugh as Scott fangirls over Steve.
“Wow! This is awesome!” He turns and sees Wanda and, in the same cheery voice, says “I know you, too. You’re great!”
Then he turns back to Steve and feels his shoulders saying “Jeez.” and you can’t help but giggle, seeing the scene and everybody’s reactions that go from amused to confused while Scott continues talking.
“Ah, look, I wanna say, I know you know a lot of super people, so… thinks for thanking of me” He says and you giggle more while looking at Bucky to make sure you heard right and his face is as confused as you feel. You turn back to Scott as he says, “Hey, man!”
Sam tries to play it cool by saying “What’s up, Tic Tac?”
“Uh, good to see you.” Scott says, seeming a little confused at the nickname but deciding to blow past it. “Look, what happened last time when I-”
“It was a great audition, but it’ll…” Sam interrupts him, shaking his hand with a chuckle. “It’ll never happen again.”
“It was hilarious!” You comment somewhat loudly and everyone turns to you, Sam glaring while Scott giggles quietly as you wink at him and wave at Wanda and Clint.
“They tell you what we’re up against?” Steve brings everyone’s attention back on the matter at hand before you and Sam start bickering.
“Something about some… psycho-assassins?” Scott says innocently and you keep in your laugh, hoping Bucky is not offended by Scott’s description of the Winter Soldiers.
“We're outside the law on this one. So, if you come with us, you're a wanted man.” Steve warns him.
“Yeah, well, what else is new?” Scott says casually and you grin. Dude is pretty cool.
“We should get moving.” Bucky says.
“We got a chopper lined up.” Clint says to the group, just as the PA starts announcing something in German, which you fortunately understand.
“Dies ist eine Notsituation." You frown. Emergency? “Alle Passagiere müssen den Flughafen sofort evakuieren.”
You’re about to translate when Bucky beats you to it. “They're evacuating the airport.”
“Stark.” Sam says and you roll your eyes. Yeah, that makes sense, that dramatic diva.
“Stark?” Scott echoes, sounding surprised and not in a good way.
“Suit up.” Steve says in his Captain voice and you know better than to disobey.
-
Steve is in his uniform now as he strides through an underpass, then jogs onto a private runway, heading for the chopper when an electro-disabler slams onto the chopper and Steve looks up.
Tony and Rhodey, both in their Iron Man and War Machine suits, descend and land in front of Steve.
You’re in the terminal with Bucky and Sam as the latter scans the airport to find their Quinjet. You can’t really hear what the others are saying, but you can hear Steve through the earpiece.
“Hear me out, Tony.” Steve tries to reason. “That doctor, the psychiatrist, he's behind all of this.”
You see T’Challa leap over a truck and after a moment Steve says “Your highness.”
You can see Tony talking, you assume trying to get Steve to surrender, before you hear Steve again. “You're after the wrong guy.”
Tony says something else you assume to be about Bucky because of what Steve answers back. ”And there are five more super soldiers just like him. I can't let the doctor find them first, Tony. I can't.”
You can see Natasha talk next and then Tony makes a face and you know he’s done, then you can hear him yelling “Underoos!” through Steve’s earpiece.
Suddenly you see a guy in a red onesie swing in and shoot what looks like webs at Steve, stealing his shield and binding his hands before landing on top of a truck a little wobbly.
You furrow your eyebrows and look at Sam to your right but he’s busy with Redwing so you look at Bucky next to him and he looks just as confused as you do. He meets your eyes and raises an eyebrow in question but you simply shrug and look back at the scene when you hear Steve say. “You've been busy.”
Tony tries his hardest to reason with Steve while, as planned, the Captain patiently listens to him while Sam looks for their Quinjet. “You did that when you signed.” He answers calmly at whatever Tony said.
You can see Tony pleading with Steve, and you almost feel bad but are snapped out of it when Sam finally talks. “We found it. Their Quinjet’s in hangar five, north runway.”
You see Steve raise his arms and one of Clint’s arrows flies through the air and breaks the webs on Steve’s hands, freeing him. “Alright, Lang.” Steve says and Scott enlarges, taking the shield from the guy with the red pajamas with a flip and giving it back to Steve.
“I believe this is yours, Captain America.” Scott says and you chuckle. Dude has a serious man crush.
The two men next to you look confused at what is so amusing, and you merely roll your eyes and say “come on.” as the three of you start running.
As you’re going through the terminal, you see the Spider-man dude stick to the glass outside and all three of your attention goes to him.
“What the hell is that?” Bucky asks as you run.
“Everyone’s got a gimmick now.” Sam sounds really annoyed and obviously you have to tease him.
“That’s a person, not a metal bird, Wilson!” You say.
“Don’t bring Redwing into this!” He yells back, glaring at you as he runs.
“You brought Redwing into this!” You snark back and, before Sam can say anything, Spiderman breaks through the glass towards the three of you, Sam tries to protect you and that causes you both to go crashing into the wall.
You can see Bucky throwing a punch but Spiderman catches his fist easily, shocking all three of us while shouting “You have a metal arm?! That is awesome, dude!”
Sam goes flying into Spiderman and takes him away, while you approach Bucky.
“Did that sound like a kid to you?” you ask him, still looking after Sam and Spiderman.
“Doesn’t matter. Let’s go.” He says starting to go after the other two.
“Matters a little…” You mumble while following Bucky.
You can hear Wanda and Clint talking through the comms, to Tony you assume when Wanda says “You locked me in my room.” and then you hear Clint say “made you look.” just as you see through the window all the cars flying down thanks to Wanda’s magic.
Spiderman wings through the rafters in the terminal, chasing Sam who flies backwards firing shots. Spiderman stops on a high beam and just then Bucky throws a giant piece of metal at him.
You can hear Spiderman yell back “Hey buddy, I think you lost this!” before throwing back the piece of metal, causing Bucky to cover you with his metal arm while it flies back, thankfully missing you both.
Sam takes the opportunity to kick Spiderman and try to bring him down, but Spiderman swings again and webs Sam’s wings, which sends him crashing to the floor. As he gets up, Spiderman webs his hands to the railing behind him and then sticks to a column and starts nerding out about Sam’s wings as you run to help Sam, Bucky right behind you.
You’re too focused on Sam to notice Spiderman swinging towards him at the same time that you get to him, luckily Bucky wraps his arms around you as all three of you crush into the railing and down to the floor on the level below.
As you all land Spiderman quickly webs Sam’s arms together, Bucky’s metal arm to the floor and then your arms, sticking you to Bucky since he was still holding you with one arm as you basically landed on him.
While Spiderman talks over you, you can faintly hear Sam messing around with his gear and you hope he’s doing something useful. Just as Spiderman is about to shoot webs again, Redwing attaches to his wrist and drags him off.
After a beat of silence Bucky says “You couldn’t have done that earlier?” to which Sam answers “I hate you.” and you roll your eyes and say “God, you two are children.”
You do your best to grab your pocket knife and, after a moment of struggling, you succeed then cut the webs off of you and Bucky with a little difficulty. You get up and cut the webs off of Bucky’s metal arm before going to Sam and helping him out of the webs too.
Your heads all snap to the window when you hear the sound of an explosion and can see it just as you hear Scott through the comms saying “Oh, man. I thought it was a water truck. Uh… sorry.”
You frown and turn to Sam and Bucky. “That can’t be good. Let’s go.” The three of you run out of the terminal as fast as you can and when you get outside you meet up with Steve, Scott, Clint and Wanda, all of you running towards the Quinjet.
“Come on!” Steve yells, but your run is interrupted when suddenly a yellow laser makes a line in front of you and you’re all stopped in your tracks. A fucking laser. You look up and see Vision hovering over you.
“Captain Rogers. I know you believe what you're doing is right.” He starts while the rest of Tony’s team gathers around him. Tony flies in while holding Natasha, Rhoday flies T’Challa and Spiderman swings down with one of Dora Milaje, T’Challa’s personal guards, that you saw at the FBI bunker and you think her name is Ayo. “But for the collective good you must surrender now.” Vision finishes talking and there is a moment of silence where you all just look at the opponent directly in front of you, which in your case is Ayo.
“What do we do, Cap?” Sam asks.
“We fight.” Is all Steve says and you hesitate for a second looking at him and then at Ayo.
“Anybody wants to switch?” You ask while looking at your teammates, some look amused but Steve kind of glares at you. “No? Alrighty, then.” You look back ahead as you all start walking, then jogging faster and faster until you’re full on running towards the opposite team.
Tony, Rhodey, Sam, Wanda and Vision take flight and then the first sound that can be heard is Tony’s fist meeting Steve’s shield.
Clint shoots an arrow at Vision that dodges it, Sam bumps into Rhodey mid-air, Scott shrinks and jumps on Natasha, Wanda shoots her magic at Peter while he shoots webs at her and T’Challa straight up jumps onto Bucky.
You lose track of what everyone else is doing once you come face to face with Ayo, who loses no time hitting you with her spear but you luckily dodge it, throwing a punch of your own that she easily avoids. The only thing you can tell is that Nat and Clint are near you fighting, and so are Bucky and T’Challa.
You take out your extendable baton, glad that Clint suggested it, and try to hit Ayo repeatedly, but you miss everytime. You’re getting frustrated when you finally land a hit to her cheek and grin, but you quickly regret it when she kicks you hard on the ribs, sending you flying back.
Ayo jumps on you and raises her spear right over your face, but before she can hit you Wanda sends her flying back far away from you.
You don’t have time to thank her when she’s throwing Natasha off of Clint and into a metal container.
“Geez, Wanda, go easy on them.” You tell her and she gives you a pointed look, before looking at Clint and saying “You were pulling your punches” before walking away.
You and Clint exchange a look but you get distracted by T’Challa throwing Bucky into a container near you. You get into action right away and just as T’Challa is about to claw at Bucky, you push the supersoldier out of the way and you both go stumbling to the side while Wanda throws T’Challa into a big metal container far away from you.
You and Bucky roll a little and, when you stop, you end on top of him. He looks up at you and whispers “Thank you.”
“Anytime, Soldier.” You wink at him and get up, helping him up too. Wanda joins you with an amused look on her face.
“Still think we should go easy on them?” She asks smugly, and you merely roll your eyes.
You’re thankfully distracted by Spiderman knocking Steve off his feet but when you go to help him, you’re intercepted by Natasha.
As you start doing hand-to-hand combat with her, you can hear Scott calling Clint “Arrow Guy” and you almost chuckle, but don’t let it distract you because you know Natasha could seriously hurt you, although it seems like she’s going as easy on you as you are on her.
“Nothing’s changed between us, right Tasha?” You ask, concerned about your friendship as you keep fighting, though it almost feels like any other sparring match you’ve ever had.
She laughs and nods. “Nothing, Y/N/N”.
You grin at the nickname and say “Good” before kicking her a little harder than you’ve ever had and sending her flying back, then you run to Steve and get to him as he points at himself and says. “Brooklyn.”
You frown at him and then look at Spiderman with one of those giant metal walkways people use to get to the planes and your eyes widen.
“That seems a little excessive.” You say, looking back at Steve.
“He’ll be fine.” Steve says shortly and starts jogging away, signaling to you to follow him, which you reluctantly do.
You and Steve are running when you hear Scott say “Uh-oh” through the comms and you frown. “Are you okay, Scott?”
You can hear him panting freaking out, saying “Oh boy. Whoa!”
You and Steve are joined by Bucky as you’re hiding behind some containers and you’re about to ask Scott if he’s okay again when Bucky talks and you turn to him. “We gotta go. That guy's probably in Siberia by now.” You can't help but think how fucking blue his eyes are.
“We gotta draw out the flyers.” Steve says, snapping you out of it and you make up your mind.
“I'll take Vision.” You tell him “You two get to the jet.”
You know Steve’s about to argue when Sam cuts in “No, you get to the jet! All three of you!” He says through the comms. “The rest of us aren't getting out of here.”
“As much as I hate to admit it, if we're gonna win this one, some of us might have to lose it.” Clint chimes in.
You and Steve look at each other and it’s like Sam can sense your hesitation as he says “This isn't the real fight, guys.”
“Alright, Sam, what's the play?” Steve says, his eyes darting between you and Bucky.
“We need a diversion, something big.” he says and you try to think about what you could do.
“I got something kind of big, but I can't hold it very long.” Scott offers “On my signal, run like hell. And if I tear myself in half… don't come back for me.”
You frown and look at Steve and Bucky who seem just as confused as you do. “He's gonna tear himself in half?” Bucky asks.
“You're sure about this, Scott?” Steve asks into his comm.
“I do it all the time. I mean once… in a lab. Then I passed out.” He tries and fails to reassure you.
“That doesn’t make me feel better, like at all.” You say looking from Bucky to Steve, who seem to agree.
You can hear Scott mumbling “I'm the boss. I'm the boss. I'm the boss. I'm the boss. I'm the BOSS!” to himself and then suddenly he grows into a fucking giant of 60-65 feet.
“Jesus fucking Christ.” You say almost in shock.
“I guess that's the signal.” Steve says and starts running towards the jet, you and Bucky following closely.
You can hear Sam saying “Way to go, Tic Tac!” as you run, going past Scott, who stops T’Challa from following you by kicking a bus into him, then Rhodey almost gets to you, but he’s stopped by Wanda.
The three of you are getting closer to the jet when a tower starts falling over the entrance, courtesy of Vision, but Wanda keeps it up with her magic for you.
As you pick up your pace and approach it, you’re stopped by a spear landing right in front of Bucky, missing his foot by a centimeter.
Ayo is about to jump on Bucky but before either him or Steve can do anything to stop her, you throw yourself on her, sending her stumbling back and to the ground, enough distance between you that you have the opportunity to look behind you at Bucky, Steve just behind him with a look that’s both impressed and shocked at your reflexes.
“I got this. Go.” You tell the two men even though your eyes are fixated on Bucky.
“Are you sure?” he asks you with a hint of worry and you grin.
“It’s nothing I can’t handle, Sergeant.” Steve smirks and nods, moving towards the jet again, but Bucky hesitates. You know Wanda won’t be able to keep the path clear forever so you try to reassure him.
“Go, I’ll be fine. Go!” You yell the last word, which seems to snap him out of it and he turns around with a nod, running at full speed towards the Quinjet.
You turn around just in time to see Ayo running towards you, but this time you’re not fast enough and she sends you falling back. You quickly get up and do your best to keep her occupied while the tower that Wanda was keeping up falls to the ground.
Or, more accurately, you're taking her punches while landing little to none yourself.
Ayo gets distracted for a second when she sees Natasha stunning T’Challa and that’s enough to give you the opportunity to take the upper hand and take her down. Unfortunately you don’t notice how close the two of you are to her spear but then again neither does she.
You see Giant Scott get taken down and, while still holding Ayo down as best as you can, you say worriedly through your comm “Scott? Scott, talk to me, are you okay?” There's a pause while you hold your breath and then he says “Does anyone have any orange slices?” And you let out a breathy laugh, both amused and impressed by his resilience.
In the time it took you to check on Scott, Ayo managed to get a hold of her spear, almost driving it through your arm. Thankfully she misses, though it still leaves a pretty deep cut.
Your eyes widen and as you get off of her she wastes no time to go help T’Challa. You lay down on the ground while holding your arm where the cut is and can see the Quinjet taking off so you let out a relieved sigh.
You sit up and, when you see Vision going to Wanda, you smile and get up to gocheck on Scott.
“You alright, big guy?” You ask him as you approach him with a little bit of a limp and he nods chuckling.
“I am. Are you alright? “ He eyes your arm and you nod. “I’m fine.”
Clint approaches you and wraps an arm around you to help you stay up, knowing you’re not gonna ask for help but he can clearly see by your quickly paling face that you need it.
You look towards the Quinjet and your eyes widen when you see Rhodey quickly falling down, Tony and Sam both diving to help him. “Shit…”
You all watch in shock as he hits the ground, Tony lands right beside him and then Sam lands a little further away. You can hear Sam saying “I’m sorry.” right before Tony shoots him and he goes flying backwards.
“SAM!” You yell and try to start making your way to him even if he’s far, but Clint holds you back with his arm around your waist, Scott’s hand on your uninjured arm.
You hold your breath until you hear the faint “I’m okay” in your ear, followed by Sam’s grunts and you relax, mumbling “Thank fucking god…”
You look around the airport, all the destruction and the people you still love despite it all.
Steve and Bucky made it out of here, so you won. At what cost though?
You can just hope this was all worth it.
