The thing about Peggy is, she doesn’t even like Steve?

She patronises him. She sexually assaults him. She stalks him. She shows him compassion only for as long as it looks like her efforts to attach him will be successful, but the instant it looks like her efforts have failed she violently attacks him and sneers at his dreams.

(How could she be so vicious and so dismissive so easily, if she actually liked him? Shouldn’t she be heartbroken? It’s not the wounded relationship that matters to her; it’s the wounded pride. Steve could’ve dropped down dead, at that moment, and she wouldn’t miss a wink of sleep.)

She dines out off having slightly known Steve, despite never dating him, and yet is enraged when people point it out.

(Why is the ass-covering patronage of every other powerful man in her life acceptable, except his?)

She refuses to acknowledge any of his loved ones (shouldn’t they be beloved by her, too?) because she is so desperate to establish herself as the only legitimate connection to him. And yet she colludes with his sworn enemies, across multiple universes, and even lies about it (omits to tell him) to his face, when his life is in danger because of it.

(How could someone do this, if they actually liked him?)

Peggy thinks she is ‘not like the other girls’ who throw themselves at Steve, just because while she is throwing herself at him she also talks to him like he is a child (because that’s how she talks to all men.)

She thinks she is actually better than Steve, since he is a man, and she thinks all men are essentially terrible and that this is feminism. She must be better, even though she acts just like the worst of men, because a thing only counts as bad if a man is doing it (eg. sexual assault) and only counts as good if Peggy is doing it (eg. if actual-feminist Daniel Souza dares to speak up for women in the workplace, she will tell him to shut up. Likewise, her turning a gun on Steve is #Girlbossing but Red Skull and Alexander Pierce doing it is Evil.)

This is why, despite Steve being an internationally famous decorated war hero, a film-star and a heartthrob and the world’s only supersoldier, while Peggy is an unfulfilled unimportant desk jockey... she still turns up to announce that she will one day allow Steve to dance with her, as if she is doing him a favour.

It’s because she sees Steve as essentially the same as before serum -- that is, pathetic (in need of help to get female attention.) Still pathetic, in her eyes.

But since to everyone else Steve has become a prize, she has to take Steve down a peg by reminding him of their little secret -- that despite how great he may seem, she is superior to him -- and she really believes it’s true!

(This belief is baseless. What If accidentally confirmed that she can only match Steve’s accomplishments if she is given serum... so she is not his equal without serum, let alone his superior, despite being born with considerable advantages over him.)

And this treatment of Steve as pathetic, before and after serum, we’re supposed to see as her ‘appreciating him’ for who he really is inside.

But her treatment of Steve is only un-starry-eyed (or so she likes to think) and businesslike because Steve is a man, and she thinks all men are inferior to her. He isn’t special.

(Just as, she is the only woman in the First Avenger, and their big connection is supposed to be over the allegedly-similar discrimination levelled against women as against disabled men... but this is experienced by all women, so saying she’s ‘The’ woman for Steve amounts to saying that she only qualifies for the job because she’s female, and for no other reason.)

The fact is, while Steve pays lip service to the idea of wanting a woman, he never actually acts like he wants a woman.

And does Peggy even want a man?

She comes across as someone who has remained single because her view of herself is so inflated and her view of men is so dim that they can never match up.

It’s like she’s got a reluctant mental shopping list of ‘insanely lofty traits a man would need to have to finally be worthy of Her Majesty,’ and she only awkwardly goes about trying to get Steve at all because she has realised that this famous neatly-pressed hunk Captain America has managed to tick all of the boxes, somehow. He’s a trophy she feels she ought to have, but isn’t really bothered about having.

(But then she gets repeatedly annoyed whenever that pesky little ‘Steve Rogers’ twerp keeps getting in the way of her fantasy, wanting to do the right thing instead of just doing what she tells him, and has to be violently attacked to keep him in line.)

She doesn’t actually like Steve.

Injury

Bucky Barnes x m!reader

Word Count: 628

Warnings/Info: Reader and Bucky shower together, it's not too detailed to remain as inclusive as possible, no pronouns used but is only for nb!, m!, m!aligned, Bucky and reader share an apartment and bed, fluff, some suggestive comments, nothing happens

You and Bucky, both racked with mental and physical exhaustion, slowly walk through the door to your shared apartment after a rather lengthy mission. You let out a shaky sigh as you take off your bag and toss it onto the floor of the entrance way, Bucky smiles at your antics and wordlessly starts to move to the bedroom. You follow suit, undressing yourself as you walk.

“I call the shower.” You call out to him as you search through your closet for your favorite pajamas.

He walks up to you with a fake pout dancing on his face, he grabs you by your belt loops pulling you in, “Why can’t we share it?”

“What’s in it for me?’” You question, your voice laced with faux intrigue.

“Oh you know…” He trailed off as he leaned in to give a soft kiss.

Bucky tilts his head slightly to deepen the kiss, hands moving from your belt onto your waist. He squeezes the soft flesh of your abdomen, drawing out a sharp hiss from you; he immediately lets go, concerned eyes scanning your body. “Did I hurt you?” He asks, already looking guilty.

“No no, you didn’t. I just nicked myself earlier - it's not a big deal really.” The beginning of your sentence comes out as rushed and nervous, not wanting him to start worrying about himself and his strength.

“Well if it’s causing you pain then it is a big deal.” He gently grabs your wrist, leading you to the bathroom.

Now standing on the cold tile, he takes the end of your shirt in his hands and pulls it up, you instinctively lift your arms straight up. He frowns, running his fingers around the open wound, you wince at the odd sensation making him whisper a quick apology. He turns away from you in favor of the medicine cabinet, pulling out what he needed.

“Get in the shower for me?” He smiles softly.

“Still wanna share?” You joke with a small wink.

“Not like that, at least not right now.”

You finish undressing, careful to not bend over too much. The hot water burns slightly as you step into the shower, the dull pain starts to shift into a sharp sting as the water hits it. You stand in the shower for around a minute while getting used to the temperature, the curtain opens and Bucky steps in behind you. Wordlessly he takes your body wash, squirting some onto a loofah and cleansing the past few days off of you. The calming scents of the different care products fill the air, making time feel as though it has come to a halt; you are only dragged out of this when the water abruptly shuts off, Bucky gently moves you out of the shower.

Bucky smiles at you, quickly drying you off. He takes the ointment and softly dabs it on the wound, he holds the other side of the waist with his free hand. Your body instinctively tries to get away from the pain, Bucky halts for a second, “I’m sorry doll, just a little while longer, I swear.” He waits for you to nod before he continues. He takes the bandages off the counter and applies them with confidence, you suspect it's from patching Steve up as kids but have never asked him to confirm.

“Alright, you’re all set.” He moves up to his full height, leaving a quick kiss on your forehead, “You tired?” He hands you your pajamas.

As if on cue you yawn, “God yes.”

You walk to your shared bedroom, laying down, he walks in a few seconds later. You watch him walk around to his side of the bed. “Thanks Buck.”

“Anytime doll.” He kisses your cheek before laying down completely.

Note

What do you think Bucky's pronouns are? What about Natasha's and Steve's? Anyone else? I sometimes think Natasha would use they/she and Bucky might be hesitant to use any other than he/him because he's never thought about it before, but I also think he'd be affirmed by a they.

I'll be honest, I didn't think I had super strong opinions on this but then I started writing this out lmao

So my quick disclaimer here is whenever I write Bucky I write him as a Cis Bisexual man. I've never thought much about his gender identity honestly, but I choose to think that he was into girls but also had feelings for Steve and that takes more importance to me personally (the self indulgent self-insert OC I paired him with is Nonbinary though ((and I'm NB myself)) so it's not like he doesn't know anything about it, just his Bisexuality is what's come up so far in what I've written) but tbh if someone referred to him as "they" I don't think he would correct them. I've also seen a lot of fics where when Bucky is in Winter Soldier mode he thinks of himself as "it", which I do think is really interesting but not something he actively chose. That's not to say it/It's pronouns aren't valid, they ABSOLUTELY are, but in this case I think it would stem more from HYDRA beating into him that he's an object or a machine and not a person rather than any preference on Bucky's part. I do think there's an argument to be made though for Bucky actively choosing to refer to himself using he/it or even he/it/they in his head for those 2 years before CW where he's on the run since he's not really the Winter Soldier and not really Bucky but a super secret third thing that's in between the two.

And some quick drive by ones:

Most of the rest of the Avengers I could see being he/theys and she/theys respectively, or just not caring about pronouns

Steve is the Token Cis Avenger™️ in my mind I can't explain it but he just gives off that vibe imo. He's not het though.

like tbh I don't think Thor cares what pronouns you use for him (1500 years is way too long to be cis). I think Valkyrie is in a similar camp, but prefers She/They.

Yelena strikes me as someone who would be cool with She/They, same with most of the women on the Thunderbolts lineup tbh

I feel like Kate would be She/Her, but if someone used "they" for her she wouldn't stop them y'know?

I don't have many thoughts on the Eternals in general, but Sprite is a She/They nonbinary I will not take criticism on this subject. Tbh I think most of them are He and She/Theys for the same reasoning as Thor, but I think some of them are like what I said for Bucky where like they won't correct you if you use 'they'. Ikaris is their Token CisHet™️

I love the headcanon that Holland!Peter is a transman, and I could see him and MJ being He/They She/They solidarity

The entire lineup of X-Men '97 is made up of He/Theys and She/Theys except for Morph who is canonically(!!) They/them. Jean Grey and Scott are their Token CisHets™️ and are good sports about it. You cannot look at Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, and Storm's designs specifically and tell me they're cis. Not possible.

Shuri gives She/They energy imo

Carol is a She/They lesbian, is dating Valkyrie, and her marriage to the prince on Aladna is a Lavender Marriage. Fight me.

Stephen is the Token CisHet Avenger™️

Loki and Sylvie both use all pronouns, but prefer he/they/xe and she/xe respectively

The Alien superheroes like Nebula, Gamora, Groot, etc. I feel probably have like semi-complicated relationship with human gender so I feel like they probably don't put to much thought into pronouns
