Mommy,
Once, when you thought I was asleep, I heard you talking with Daddy on the balcony of our hotel room at Disney World.
Katelyn would have been gorgeous, you said. She was born with curly hair, you know, one of those girls who could stop men in their tracks. When we got back home, I would find that pink photo album that contains the few pictures we have of her. She did have little curls. I could see her beauty, even in those photos, a crying baby just awaiting her imminent death.
You said, Sarah would have been the athletic one. She probably would have been, though she was weak and dying in her pictures. She would have fit in with Daddy's side of the family, unlike me, always lost in a book, creating my own reality.
I pretended to be asleep when you said Lindsay's the smart one and we couldn't have had a more beautiful child, even though she can't catch a ball to save her life.
That's why we're here, Daddy said. Because we want to give her the world.
I never saw the girls in person. Isn't it funny how we call them that? The girls. Even though neither of them grew old enough to experience the pleasure and pain of girlhood. You said I was too young.
I went to Sarah's funeral. I was five then, and already understood death more than I should have. Pepaw handed me a pink rose to place on her grave.
It was closed.
I know I couldn't have saved them. There was nothing I could do, but I needed to see them even then, when I really couldn't understand that they wouldn't wake up from their newborn sleep.
I had dreams for years that I got to hold them, and kiss them, and see them.
And seeing them was enough for me, just to know that they were a part of who I am, and who you are, and who all of us are, their innocence tainted by some force I still don't understand and probably never will.
I've never forgiven you for that, though I would have done the same.
I was just a baby myself then, weak and dependent and just waiting for life to begin.

Happy Birthday, Twinyards!
I hope you guys enjoy this super short drabble :) I couldn't resist writing something for them!
----
The doorbell rang around four in the afternoon, and Aaron heard two pairs of feet stomp down the hallway to try to answer it first. He’d been in the middle of chopping some zucchini while Katelyn finished ordering the pizza for that night. It was going to be the weirdest dinner ever, because Aaron wanted ravioli and Andrew eventually decided on pizza after suggesting a cookie cake four times, which had also been purchased.
They were turning thirty five this year. Aaron had hoped it would take longer to start feeling old, but he’d been feeling old ever since medical school, so this year was no different. Just another day on the calendar that marked ‘you made it! Hooray!’ than anything else. Usually, celebrating his birthday consisted of hanging with his beautiful wife and daughters, talking on the phone with his cousin and calling his brother for a two minute exchange. But this year his oldest daughter Sophia finally understood the concept of twins and demanded to know what her Uncle Andrew does on his birthday if it’s the same day.
Aaron really had no clue, but he figured he spent it with Josten, so he told her as much. She asked if he got presents, and Aaron had hesitated long enough for her to get her answer. Now, they were finally having a joint birthday party for the first time in fifteen years.
It wasn’t for a lack of trying. Andrew and Neil lived almost three hours away, and birthdays just weren’t their family’s thing. Sophia and her sister, Isla, were used to parties, but Aaron knew that he and Andrew never were, so something private was more than enough. Still, Aaron had made sure to let his brother know that he was more than welcome if he wanted to come, even if it was out of the way and during the exy season. Andrew had declined every time, so if he was going to come this year, it couldn’t be Aaron who asked.
Andrew had the biggest soft spot for his nieces, spoiling them rotten and going out of his way to come babysit once in a while. Aaron remembered the conversation his brother and Sophia had pretty clearly: “Uncle Andrew, can you come here for your birthday?” she had asked, cradling Aaron’s cellphone in her hands. “Cause I made you a card but I don’t have stamps! How can I mail it without stamps, Uncle Andrew?”
Obviously, Andrew had suggested something terrible and probably illegal, because the next day Aaron could’ve sworn he saw his seven year-old daughter trying to bribe the mailman, but Katelyn had laughed at that suggestion and Sophia had never explained when asked. He blamed Andrew for teaching his children the art of avoiding the question as well.
“Hey,” Katelyn called, bringing Aaron out of his thoughts. He put the knife down and stared at the half-chopped zucchini, wondering how long he’d been lost in thought. “You good?”
“Yeah,” Aaron replied, and it was true. Honestly, he was sure he had been anticipating this moment, because there was a small part of him that wasn’t sure if Andrew would actually come. But hearing his daughters babble about random things as they led their uncles - oh shit - into the living room was just about perfect.
This night would be a disaster, but a welcome one.
~*~
By the time the food had been eaten, presents had been opened and the two girls got to scream-sing happy birthday, the sun had long since set and Aaron knew his brother wouldn’t be staying much longer. Andrew had walked out the backdoor, probably overwhelmed and needing a minute, so Aaron took that opportunity to find the small present he’d wrapped just a few days ago in his closet. He avoided the kitchen as he made his way to the backdoor, flipping the box between his hands a few times.
He couldn’t remember if he’d ever gotten his brother a gift before.
Opening the door and stepping into the chilly night air, Aaron was almost surprised to not smell any smoke from a cigarette. Instead, Andrew was sitting on one of the back porch steps, leaning against the railing and staring at the small splatter of stars in the dark sky. Aaron approached slowly, sitting down on a step below and shivering.
“Should’ve gotten a jacket,” Andrew said.
“Yeah,” Aaron agreed. He looked down at the box in his hands, wrapped in the pastel wrapping paper that Katelyn had gotten for the girls’ birthdays, trying to work himself up to handing over the gift. Andrew didn’t rush him, which didn’t help at all, because if he did then maybe Aaron wouldn’t feel like chickening out.
Was this seriously the first gift he’d gotten for Andrew?
Wordlessly, he turned and held out the small box until Andrew took it, then shoved his hands in his pockets. “Happy birthday,” he said quietly, staring at the porch steps. His heart pounded as he heard Andrew flip the little box over a few times, the contents rattling inside, but he didn’t take long to finally open it. Aaron almost held his breath while he waited.
“Aaron,” Andrew eventually said.
“It’s for emergencies,” Aaron quickly started to explain. “What if something happens and the girls need you? What if I break my leg, or something? Or if you’re going to watch them overnight and need to lock the door?” He paused for a moment, then finally looked up at his brother holding the silver key loosely like he’d hold a cigarette, staring at it intensely. Aaron cleared his throat and shifted. “You don’t have to keep it. But I’d prefer if you did.”
Andrew was still quiet. It was almost like he was frozen, and for a second Aaron thought he’d done the wrong thing, but slowly the furrow between Andrew’s eyebrows relaxed, and he moved to hold the key tightly in his fist. “I didn’t get you anything,” he mumbled, almost as if he was upset about it.
“You’re here,” Aaron pointed out, standing up and walking towards the door. “That’s what I wanted.”
Silence, again, but Aaron didn’t mind. He walked back into the warm house and into the kitchen, where his wife was trying to wipe frosting from the cookie cake off of Isla’s face and Sophia handed one of her toy teacups to Neil, who somehow managed to look both completely out of his element and also in it.
Yeah, it was a good birthday, he decided, stepping forward to join the fray.

Andrew Showing The Foxes His Love Through Actions.
All through “All for the game” we can see how Andrew shows his love through actions. I believe that Andrew does care for his teammates and I know I; m not the only one, so I wrote this. (Also, I will just forget about the choking scene because N*ra did their relationship so badly, like- ugh, that’s for another time)
Tw: Curse words, references to the foxes pasts, punches, vomit, Riko, mentions of scars, mentions of nightmares, mentions of panic attacks, mentions of past self-harm, probably many spelling and grammar mistakes.
Allison.
It happened during a game, the foxes were winning and the other team were getting exasperated because they could not get past the backliners and if they could, Andrew would not let them score.
During the last minutes of the game, a player from the other team made Allison trip on purpose and “accidentally” kicked her.
Everyone else were too far away from them.
Except Andrew.
When the referee called the fault, Andrew was already there, punching the guy resulting in him taking a step back and falling to the ground.
As the referee gave him a yellow card, Andrew extended his arm to help Allison up.
And if he asked Renee how bad the injury was, no one had to know.
Matt.
When Matt was visiting his mom during summer vacations, they decided to go shopping, there he found the most adorable hoodies. It was orange on the outside and the inside had a really soft and warm fabric, which was white and had orange paw prints. But the best part was that the hoodie had fox ears.
Matt obviously bought nine of them.
“Disgusting.” Andrew had said, which Matt had obviously expected, so he thought nothing of it.
Everyone wore them, Aaron had given his to Katelyn, except Andrew.
But when winter came, Matt saw Andrew get out of his dorm room with the hoodie on, pulling it tighter against himself when a cold air blast came.
“Not a word.” Andrew deadpanned, pointing at Matt, when he noticed him, before leaving the tower.
Matt smiled the whole day.
Dan.
During one of their dinner bankets, the foxes were placed into pairs and told to socialize with the other teams. The pairs were meticulously design so that ‘the monsters’ (minus Nicky) interacted. This meant every ‘monster’ was placed with an upperclassmen. Andrew got Dan.
So when they Dan were talking to some players from Penn State, the Ravens decided to join.
They began talking sh¡t about Dan’s time as a stripper.
Andrew didn’t say or do a thing, knowing Dan was capable on fighting her own fights, she is the first female captain on Exy, but he does stand to the side, throwing a death glare to them.
But when one of them decide it’s a good idea to slap her in the butt when she is distracted....Andrew intervienes.
He grabs the Raven’s wrist, twisting it before pushing him into a table.
Dan is surprised, to say the least, but she knows that the Raven will get a worst fate if she leaves Andrew like that.
Calmly, she tells him she is okay and that the Raven didn’t touch her and that he can look and see for himself.
The latter does the trick, Andrew turns his murderous glare at Dan so she turns in place extending her arms showing him that the Raven did nothing to her.
Andrew calms after a while and stands up, glancing at the Raven one more time.
The rest of the night Andrew does not leave Dan’s side until they head back home. Dan attaches herself to that memory forever.
Renee.
Renee and Andrew sparred at least once a week, more whenever Andrew was having a bad day.
Such as that moment, Aaron’s trial was just around the corner and Andrew was not having it.
He went to Bee’s twice but it still wasn’t enough, so him and Renee spared.
But today was a specially not good day, Aaron’s lawyer had said that he’d have to speak about what happened that day.
Renee knew that Andrew was far more on his head than n the present so she wasn’t mad when Andrew threw her down to the mat and her hip bumped onto the floor.
For the first time since they spared that day, Renee saw Andrew actually see her.
His eyes were wide, probably surprised of what happened so she reassured him that she was okay and that it didn't hurt much and that she’d had much worse before.
But he didn’t listen to her and got off the mat.
Renee stood up and went for her water bottle, thinking that Andrew had gone to let out some steam alone.
But then he came back with an ice package in hand and gave it to her.
Renee thank him, placed it on her hip and sat near him while he starred to the distance in moral support.
Nicky.
Nicky wasn’t one to get sick often, but when it happened, he really got sick.
So when one day he wakes up with a headache and all of his bones ache, he knows he’s in trouble.
Not wanting anyone to be worried about him, Nicky tries to stand up, just for a blast of nausea hits him and he has to run to the bathroom before he pukes on their bedroom.
When he is done throwing his guts out, he brushes his teeth and walks out to the kitchen for a glass of water. But when he gets there, a water bottle is out with a bottle of Pepto-bismol beside it.
In the middle of his confusion, Andrew and Aaron appear with a thermometer, a blanket and pills.
“Go lay down,” Andrew says with an uncharacteristically softness in his tone.
Nicky complies and walks towards the couch, Andrew protectively trailing behind him with his phone and a blanket.
“I don’t have any class today, Aaron has two in an hour but then he’ll be back. Tea?” Nicky is perplexed at this attention given by his cousins so he is only able to nod and think who were these people and what did they do with his cousins.
The rest of the day, the twins (mostly Andrew) take his temperature, give him his meds, cook for him and help him out whenever he needs it.
Nicky sleeps with a smile that day.
The next day, he feels much better, but because the sickness messed with his feelings, he has an urge to hug his cousins.
He asks for permission and surprisingly, Andrew says yes.
Nicky keeps the hug fast and makes sure he doesn’t make Andrew feel trapped.
He still cries at the memory.
Aaron.
Out of all the foxes, Aaron is the one with the most difficult things to study. He is in fact studying pre-med.
So during the finals week, he is the most stressed.
There is this one class in which Aaron has been having the most trouble with and if he doesn’t pass the test, he’ll have to repeat the class. So to say that he was stressed was an understatement.
He begins studying for that class a week and a half before the exam is and the day before the exam, he skips gym, morning practice and afternoon practice.
He studies for the exam the whole day and had to be reminded to take breaks for the bathroom and meals constantly.
He is also forced by Andrew to sleep when he woke up at 3 am and Aaron was still awake, studying.
Aaron keeps thinking of the material as he tries to sleep, and isn’t able to until 4 am, he dreams on the material the whole night.
When he opens his eyes, he sees that the sun is much higher than usual, worried, he checks the time on his phone just for his fears to be true, his alarm didn’t sound and he slept through the whole exam.
He doesn’t even care to change and runs to the building. The door to his classroom is closed and the professor is not there.
“Can’t stop thinking about the exam? Me neither.” He hears one of his classmates say behind him.
“I didn’t even do it.” He says through his teeth.
“What do you mean? I saw you there.”
Aaron is confused so he asks more classmates if they saw him, and all of them said that yes, they saw him there.
Hurriedly he got to the tower and confronted Andrew if it was his doing and if he did the exam for him like they did in high school.
“I did.” was Andrew’s only response before walking out.
Aaron got a B⁺ a grade much better than if he had done it by himself.
Kevin.
After Riko died, his and Andrew’s deal could be done, but they had grown close, they had passed so much time together since Kevin escaped Evermore.
Neither of them would say it out loud, but they were each other’s best friend.
So when Kevin learned that his things would be thrown away from the Nest, he went into a spiral.
But when Andrew asked and Kevin couldn’t say why, Andrew made it his mission to know.
Neil had a few assumptions, but when he had been at the Nest, he had been too focused on his injuries that he wasn’t a good resource.
So Andrew contacted someone he never thought he would be speaking to. Jean.
Jean told Andrew of Kevin’s old bedroom and the things Kevin had to hide away from Riko because if he found them, Kevin would be punished. Yet he didn’t know what these secret things were.
Thankfully, Jean knew where the hiding spot was.
The next day, Andrew took the Maserati in the early morning without a word (Neil knew but he had to act as if he didn’t), and made his way to Evermore.
Once there, he had to sneak inside, but given that the Nest was desolated for classes it was easy.
When Andrew got to where Jean had told him where the hiding spot was, he found a small shoe box.
Opening it, he found three things and Andrew immediately understood Kevin’s spiraling.
When he got back to the tower, he directly went to his dorm. Inside were Neil, Nicky and Kevin watching a game.
Andrew signaled Neil and the latter made Nicky follow him out.
“Where were you? You missed morning practice,” Kevin said as soon as they were alone.
Without a word, Andrew took the shoebox out of his bag and carefully gave it to Kevin, who took a shaky breath at the sight of it.
As soon as it was in Kevin’s hands, he opened it and carefully took the three things which were the last things he had from his mother.
A woman’s ring, a record player and a photograph.
Tears immediately sprang from Kevin’s eyes and Andrew decided he would give Kevin his space.
“Thank you,” Kevin said as he opened the door, Andrew just nodded feeling a weird warmness in his chest.
Neil.
Andrew shows Neil his love in so many ways, helping him out during panic attacks, reminding him that he’s safe, holding his hand, kissing him, sharing a cigarette in the roof, stroking his hair when they cuddle and so much more.
But the most important thing Andrew does for Neil is letting the latter see his vulnerability and trust him with it.
It starts with simple things, Andrew letting Neil sleep with him in the same bed, cuddle together, sit on Andrew’s lap (and vice versa), etc.
But it slowly begins to increase, let Neil stay whenever he gets a nightmare and/or a panic attack, let Neil take care of him when he gets sick, let Neil cuddle on top of Andrew, let himself seek comfort in Neil, Andrew letting Neil take his armbands off, see and touch them.
It takes a long time, but Neil doesn’t mind, those little things are more than enough for him and he doesn’t expect more from Andrew, but welcomes this little things and holds onto them with all of him.
Bonus:
Wymack.
Wymack is always threatening his foxes with running marathons and says that their personal stuff is over his pay rate, but oh doesn’t he care for them.
He works hard for them so they can have good things and safe and comfortable area for them, that’s why he had the walls on the showers made.
He loves the foxes, and they love them too.
One morning, he had to organize some piles of paperwork, but he had a stressing week and the night before he hadn’t been able to sleep good, so after a while of organizing paperwork, he decides he deserves a break.
The foxes are supposed to be in class so he doesn’t expect them until the afternoon. He goes to the lounge and lays down on the couch to “rest his eyes”.
He falls asleep almost instantly.
Andrew had forgotten something on the court after their morning practice so he decided to go now, he had finished his classes and knew that Wymack had to organize some paperwork, he was surprised to see the old man asleep.
Andrew could remember his initial fear of the man when he saw him the first time, he was tall, broad and serious, but he didn’t let it show. He had been waiting for the man to do something to him, but instead the man had respected his boundaries and didn’t ask when Andrew broke into his home in the late night and made himself a pot of hot cocoa (which had been bought for this reason).
So quietly, Andrew went to Wymack’s office and organized his paperwork, marking those who were missing one or two things with a post it and leaving right after he was done, not expecting the man to know it was him.
When Wymack woke up and walked back to his office he was surprised to see that his paperwork was organized. He mentally questioned who it was but when he read the post its he immediately knew it was Andrew, he knew all of his children’s handwritings, and made sure he bought Andrew’s favorite  chocolate ice cream.
Abby.
Abby was the first one, apart from Bee, to see his scars.
The first time she had tried to say something but she had seen something in his face because he didn’t and let him place the armbands back on.
After that she looked away when he took them off and just glanced at them for a second to make sure there were no track marks before turning around again so he could put the armbands back on.
(She knew there would not be track marks, so she just looked at them so there would be no new ones, he cared for her foxes.)
And during the physical exam, she made sure not to touch him more than necessary.
Abby checks on Bee asking if he’s okay, she never expects an in depth answer, just a confirmation and she feels relief when Bee tells her that he is getting better.
On one of his sessions with Bee, she suggests Andrew that he should tell someone about his scars, preferably someone who has already seen them.
Andrew knows what Bee is trying and Bee knows that Andrew knows and Andrew knows Bee knows that Andrew knows.
In the end, he does tell Abby. He keeps it vague and watches her reaction, waiting for a small expression change, but thankfully Abby just listens, and shows no pity, knowing that Andrew would hate it and does not comment.
When he’s done, she just nods and thanks him for telling her and when Andrew leaves, Abby lets the tears she had retained out.
She keeps the truth guarded with her life, glad Andrew trust her enough to say this.
Bee.
It is not a secret that Andrew sees Bee like his mother figure, out of all the woman in his life she was the only one that he didn’t feel the need to be unlike himself, she loved him just the way he was.
It was scary at first, his mind supplied that it would be just like Cass, he just had to wait for the other shoe to come down.
It never did.
So he found himself driving to her office when he needed to understand something or he was just not in a good mental place.
He would also call her when he didn’t have the energy to move.
She was on one of his sides during Aarons trial, helping him keep his cool when he felt like he needed to punch something.
When it had been his turn to say his testimony, he had looked at her and Neil, remembering that they would be with him and that they would show no pity to him.
So the day before Mother’s day, when him and Neil were shopping for clothes, and he saw a coffee mug in the shape of a bee hive that read “To the Bee-st mom” he had to buy it.
The next day he arrives to her office and leaves the cup before leaving without a word.
It fills Bee’s heart when she reads it but knows best than to comment of it on their next session.
But if she uses it everyday and it becomes her favorite mug, no one has to know.
Look at me posting three days in a row, I’m proud of myself ngl. Anyways, have this, hope you like it, I tried my best and this is honestly the longest “headcanon” I’ve ever written.

Andrew and the car crash
Tw: death, murder, Tilda and everything she implies, the twinyards and their baggage
It’s the twinyards and Tilda, so it’s all terrible
Basically the concept that it was Andrew who asked Nicky to get back to the US, just in case he died in the crash
Inspired by this post;
https://no-name-district.tumblr.com/post/661633933530808320/sad-aftg-thought-of-the-day-andrew-probably
By: @no-name-district
It’s years in the future when Aaron finds out that it was Andrew who wrote Nicky in Germany
It’s mentioned casually, over the morning coffee as Nicky bounces Josephine up and down lightly to make her giggle
Aaron holding his other daughter watching Nicky engage with the toddler absolutely delight on his face
That’s when they begin talking about it, Nicky mentioning with half teasing half melancholy to his voice
“Sometimes I wish I could have taken care of you when you were young like this…”
Aaron stiffens, Nicky realises his mistake and awkwardly apologize for it, they both know he was too young when Andrew and Aaron were born
It would have not made a difference
But then he says it, the thing that turns Aaron’s world upside down
“I never understood why Andrew sent that letter, why he wanted me here so badly”
And Aaron doesn’t understand, his cousin might as well be talking gibberish
He gently puts down Claire and he watches as Josephine crawls from Nicky’s knee and the small blonde twins rush from the kitchen to play
“What letter?” Aaron can’t identify the emotion he’s feeling then, he should talk to his therapist about that
Nicky obviously looks like he might have made an mistake of some kind, said something he shouldn’t, but he relents and tells him everything
Andrew had sent him a letter asking him to come back to the U.S, something something wanting to meet his cousin
It had been a nice letter, which was one of the reasons Nicky had been so confused actually meeting Andrew, picking him up at the hospital to go to the funeral
Andrew had never acted like he wanted anything to do with Nicky, until the attack at Eden’s
To say Aaron is confused would be an understatement, and even after Nicky leaves that night, he can’t stop thinking about it
So he calls Andrew
“Why did you ask Nicky to get back to the US?” He doesn’t say hi, they don’t do stuff like that
Andrew’s silent for a long moment, then slowly and o different he speaks, measured and though through words leaving his lips
“I didn’t want you to be alone in a house with someone like Luther” and then he hangs up
Aaron puts down the phone with a sigh and somehow feels even more confused
Until it hits him
He tears out of bed at midnight, Katelyn startling beside him as he rushes to the attic, pulling out the box of old teenage stuff from when he lived at Tulsa’s
Every singe book is flipped through and shaken to make sure nothings hidden there, every singe item is turned inside out and searched
And eventually Aaron finds exactly what he’s looking for
Andrew’s handwriting stares up at him from the page and then, only then does it hit him
Andrew never expected to survive killing Tilda
The letter was proof, right there in his shaking, pale hands, Andrew left his goodbye
And Aaron had never found it, if Andrew had succeeded, Aaron would have never found it
Katelyn finds him in the bathroom, leaned against the sink, letter in hand and starring at the wall in front of him
He’s on the phone, four pages of letters, text from top to bottom on both sides of the paper spread out in front of him
She knows he’s talking to Andrew, Aaron doesn’t use that voice when he’s talking to anyone else
She heads back to bed with a smile, sparring a look to her twins before crawling back under the covers
Andrew and Aaron are getting better, day by day, and she is happy for them
She might have to mention this to Neil on their next rare coffee date

when it comes to studying and school in general, aaron, kevin and Dan are the most intense and thus: headcannons
the reason that they put more effort in their studies than the other foxes varies between them:
kevin is a borderline perfectionist and it only makes sense that his grades are immaculate
aaron is really smart and dives into his studies because for one he enjoys it and for another he likes having something that he is in control of
dan never cared too much about grades in high school (exy was the only important thing) but when wymack gave her psu as a ticket out of her old life, she swore to herself that she wouldn't waste it and she's not about to lose her foxes by throwing her scholarship away
they study together a lot because it helps them get into a productive mindset and they're also good with helping each other out in different subjects of their core classes
aaron is the designated science boy (the likes of which i will never understand but it's aaron so I'll let it slide) and I'm pretty sure it's canon that kevin studies history and it is my belief that dan is really good at writing and English in general
they usually hold their study sessions in either their claimed corner in the library or in aarons room
matt has learned by now to stay out of their way and he usually either reads on the couch or goes to play video games with neil and nicky ("you could study yourself you know" *he just smiles sweetly at dan and blows her a kiss*)
when aaron has to write a paper, it's common to find his drafts littered with kevin's "constructive criticism" (he insists on using a red pen because he's a prentitious ass) and dan's more practical corrections
dan has a complicated relationship with chemistry but finds aarons explanations far easier to understand than her dipshit professors
he ends up teaching her like half the course but he doesn't mind because he likes chemistry and he likes the feeling of explaining things and he won't admit it because he is also an ass but he likes dan because she's smart and she's willing to work hard and he respects that
kevin is appalled the first time he sees dans notes because she only writes in pen and has no problem scribbling things out which sCANDalizes kevin who will rewrite his notes three times if necessary because he can't study from them unless they're neat
during midterms and finals, their sessions become more chaotic and it's not uncommon to see them drowning in a sea of books, papers and writing utensils
once during an exam period, kevin spent five minutes looking for his highlighter before dan just silently pointed to her ear and he found it tucked behind his
aaron gets annoyed when kevin and dan don't ease off practices around exams and brings it up every time one of them so much as sighs about their workload (kevin: *groans* Aaron: well you know you wouldn't be so- kevin: give it uP aaron we have to WIN dan: boys, shut UP *they both glare at her* dan: thank you! now aaron what does this mean...)
they all have certain habits that they subconsciously do when studying: aaron puts his pen between his teeth when he's reading and bites on it when he's thinking, dan plays with the corner of the page and pulls at her hair when she's frustrated with a problem, kevin's fingers are always tapping and he clicks his pen quickly right before he figures out a concept (the pen clicking doesn't bother aaron or dan but if one of them so much as clicks their pen twice, kevin looks murderous)
eventually they become familiar with the others systems and don't even use full sentences when they need things from each other.. matt is very confused the first time he hears a conversation between the three of them that consisted of exactly eight words
they know each other's dunkin orders and at least once a session one of them will grab their phone to send a text and fifteen minutes later one of the foxes or katelyn shows up to drop off lattes and espressos
also, sometimes matt will find them hours after he left them and just be like "guys, stop. eat something" and they'll look up with eyes burning from the books and blink at him and holy shit when did it get so late
they have a group chat ("only because it's convenient" "shut up aaron")
they ask each other how their exams/quizzes/assignments in general went, especially when two of them know the other was stressed about it
this leads to kevin going on a twenty minute rant on the incompetence of dan's history teacher when he gives her a B on an assignment kevin helped her with
dan and aaron find his indignation amusing, particularly because kevin seemed more upset than dan herself
during exam periods, sometimes some of the other foxes will join them and, though they won't admit it, kevin, dan and aaron will roll their eyes at each other every time someone interrupts their flow because clearly they don't understand the way this works
all the foxes do study together every so often tho..not the way the other three do but more like they all just gravitate to the same room and are spread out everywhere with their own books
on days like this, once their backs hurt and their brains are stuffed, they'll order in and spend the rest of the night trying to get dan (and kevin) to cancel practice
it never works
one time it worked
well, technically kevin had fallen asleep as soon as the food came and so convincing dan was easier
nicky thinks that the dramatic monologue he performed to dan was what swayed her (he was right)
so they leave kevin on the couch (renee put a blanket over him) and move the food to the girls room so they don't wake him
he woke up twenty minutes after they were supposed to be on the court, understood what happened immediately and stomped over to the girls room, hair sticking up every which way
he walks in to find them all eating and playing cards and when he glares at them they just shoot him bright smiles and "good morning kevin" "why hello there sunshine" remarks
for once he decides not to fight it and their mouths drop when he just shuts the door (still glaring) and moves toward the food
"you should be disappointed in yourself," he grumbles at dan as he reaches past her for one of the cartons
"what can I say," she says around a mouthful of noodles "they're persuasive"
"real strong will you got there, captain"
"fine, we'll do extra sprints next practice to make up for it, how's that?"
the others all groan and kevin grins at that and finally relaxes and allows himself to unwind for the rest of the evening
they never really acknowledge it but they all enjoy these slower moments where they can be just regular boring university kids with their friends
anyway dan, aaron and Kevin are study buddies

Today I wrote my lesson for my university. The test was hard, but I believe that I passed it. I don't know the grade yet, but I will learn it soon enough!! After I saw chapter 6, this scene came to my mind. I hope you like it! For once again, Warning: Grammatical Errors, maybe.
Inside the farm, the members of the Horseback Riding club were taking care of the horses. Anise and Sebek took their horses to give them water. But the animals, suddenly, started to move very abruptly and raised their frond legs. Anise used her Shadow magic to control the horses' shadows and tame them.
"The horses are too anxious today" they heard Riddle say
"Maybe a storm is coming" Silver said "They are very sensitive to the weather"
The two Diasomnia first-years heard a loud noise and left the stable quickly, approaching their classmates.
"Silver! Riddle-senpai!" Sebek shouted "Are you alright?"
"We are fine" Silver said "What about the others?"
"Everyone, including the horses are fine" Sebek said "What was that noise?"
"It was like someone tried to break open the barrier and..."
"Look! What is that?" Anise shouted
Some people, with mysterious armors appeared from the sky and landed outside the farm.
"I don't know. I have never saw their uniforms before"
"We found the experiment A" one of them said
"Whoever they are, they don't seem friendly to me" Silver said
"Did anyone gave you the permission to enter the facility?" Riddle asked "As I was expected. This is a serious law violation! As the Heartlabyul dorm leader, I allow all the dorm students to attack the intruders with magic!"
"We are asking the permission to attack" one of the mysterious men said
"Prepared yourselves!" Riddle shouted
"Understood!"
Anise used her Shadow magic to control they mysterious men's own shadows. The shadows started to wrap around their own bodies, trapping them.
"I got them!" she said to her classmates "Now you can..."
She didn't manage to complete her phrase, when they got out of their Shadow Prison and attached her with their own magic. Anise fell with her back on the grass.
"Anise!" Sebek shouted
"Why you....?!" Silver said and attached them with his own magic.
Anise stood up and raised her hand to the men. She used the same spell that she used to the horses, to make their bodies paralyze, through their shadows.
"My... My power has no affect on them"
"Neither mine" Sebek and Silver said the same time. "Probably they are wearing armors, which protects them from the magic"
They hit Riddle with electricity and the dorm leader fell to the grass"
"Riddle-senpai!" the first-years shouted
"I... I can't move...." he started screaming and fire appeared around them "You have some nerve to come here and make ME kneel in front of you!"
Once the fire touched their armor, it disappeared. They used electricity again and Riddle felk unconscious to the grass.
"We got the Subject A. It's time to leave" one of them said and took Riddle
"Wait!" Sebek shouted "Where are you taking him!"
They didn't answer. They just flew away. Silver's expression became more furious and pointed to the sky
"Look! Our campus is been surrender by people who got Riddle, just now!"
"If they were targeting Riddle" Sebek said "who is a dorm leader, that means...."
"Oh no" Anise whispered "Master Malleus"
"We have to go back to Diasomnia as fast as possible"
Anise stood with her back to the sun and raised her hand. Her shadow was in front of her and it seemed like it opened a gate, which looked like a black lake on the grass
"Get in!"
"Are you... Are you sure about that?" Sebek asked
"After you. Lightning prince" Silver said and kicked Sebek in the Shadow Lake. The two adopted siblings followed him inside the portal and they were at Diasomnia's main corridor.
Katelyn and Ruggie entered in the greenhouse.
"Leona-san, we know that you are here" Ruggie said
"Even if I am a little cat, I can sense you here. So, stop hiding!"
"I know you didn't hand your report... again. Mr. Trein is angry and he wants to talk to you. For the sake of our lives, just follow us, this time"
The glass of the greenhouse broke and sharp pieces started to fall.
"Watch out!" Ruggie pushed Katelyn back and the glasses felt between and on them
"The... The glass" Kat whispered and she lowered her orange ears
"It broke!" once the glasses touched something, they disappeared
"Ruggie, are you OK?"
"Yes, I am fine. We... We aren't injured?"
"The glasses didn't hurt us. There must be a spell which made them disappear once they come in contract with something" Kat said and approached him
"I did!" they heard Leona's voice "You are a second-year student. You should learn to cast out a spell to protect yourself and your fellows" he turned and looked Kat, who lowered her ears again
The mysterious men with the uniforms appeared and approached them.
"We found Subject B. Start the operation now"
"Who are they?" Ruggie asked and Kat sniffed to their direction
"Their scent is weird"
"And unpleasant" the hyena said
"This logo...." Leona said
"They got some nerve to come to fight you. I will draw their attention, as you and Kat will attack them" Ruggie said
"Leona-senpai, I am asking the permission to attack" the cat said, putting out her claws
"No. I will surrender" Liona said and raised his hands
"You what??!" Ruggie and Kat said in the same time
"Please hand out all the magic weapons that you have"
"Here. It's my magic pen, take it" Leona said and threw it to the ground
"Em... Leona-senpai... What are you doing?" Kat whispered
"Seriously! We would take them down easily!"
"They are hiding a magic proof plate under their vest" Leona whispered
"Now I understand what is that weird smell" Kat said
"Both of you. Don't do anything stupid"
"W... Wait.. Isn't that the material used to the uniforms of executive officers?"
"You seem to know much about them, Ruggie. Have you been caught by them before?" Leona asked with a smirk
"Oh, well..." Ruggie scratched the back of his head, blushing by shame "It was a long time ago..."
"Executive?" Kat asked "You don't mean..."
"It's not time to joke around" Ruggie said "We have to do something. We are in dangerous situation"
"I saw this logo before" Leona said "They are the watchers"
"Watchers? I think that Chenya has said something about them in the past" Kat said, thinking
"Just listen to me. Don't do anything. Just stay back and don't try anything that would seem as a resistance"
"The weapon has been analysed. It is the real weapon of Night Raven College. Subject B, please, come with us"
"Just be careful of me. I might get sick if you fly with high speed" he smirked
"Did he just...?" Kat whispered
"Are you serious, Leona-san?"
"Ruggie, please take care of Savanaclaw, until I am back. Katelyn, go back to Heartlabyul and check your classmates. Good luck... Even thought, I am not sure if I come back again"
"Don't say things like these, right now! Leona-senpai!"
The mysterious men took Leona and flew away
"W-Wait! Leona-san!" Ruggie shouted
"He is gone. I have to go and check my dorm" Kat said "We have to go and find our classmates, Ruggie-senpai" and they left the greenhouse.
*sobs* this just made me cry😭😭
I remembered their kidnapping scenes again😭😭 I thought I've moved on from it but I guess I didn't😥
This is a beautiful angst scenario😭😭💕💕 thanks for writing this 💕💕and for making me cry😭

hi eris!! almost there!! i love a slow song normally, but idk the btr ones kind of just lost their appeal to me as i aged i guess. that's not to say they're bad though!! just something i get from somewhere else i guess. and who knows i might get back my taste for them, music taste kind of comes and goes in waves for me. like phases of the moon lol. also i like to shuffle albums too, to be honest i've never really understood the big deal about track order. like in a Symbolic sense, as in the way the artist wants their particular story told, sure, but in a practical sense it's never really affected my listening experience. like i've heard people say albums were straight up unlistenable to them because of track order and i've just never really understood that perspective. and here's to us reading the books we bought in 2022!! also i totally understand, there's so much i want to catch up with over break that i'm probably going to get overwhelmed and just listen to the same 10 songs in bed over and over. what are you hoping to watch/read/listen to in your time off?
yeah i totally get that and honestly i’m the same way, like secret time i wasn’t a huge fan of worldwide (thought it was overhyped) until kendall preformed it on a live with katelyn tarver early pandemic 2020 and i was like huh also their slow songs are very fake boy bandesque so i get it 😂
i also want you to know i audibly said ‘heck yes’ when i saw you shuffle albums ✌️😗 like obviously album track lists have to mean something but i think anyone trying to get you to look at a specific way to perceive art makes me want to chew glass not to mention that of the track list really meant something singles wouldn’t exist/ all your set lists would be the same but whatever i just think the different ways to perceive art and stories means something, i also grew up listening to everything on cds and was like ‘this is so boring’ and i was like 7 so i didn’t give a fuck about the story that literally did not exist (the day i discovered the “random” button my cinderella cd player was the best day of my life) and ugh people saying i hat genuinely annoys me because like no one is forcing you to listen in that order… it’s different in a musical or movie cause you can be like ‘these scenes don’t work togetehr’ or putting this musical number by this one makes no sense and then it’s like yeah anyway that’s all to say that this is one of my favorite things to talk about music wise so thank you for indulging me!
i definitely want to catch up on editing my brain has been so full for months i want to! get! it! out! music wise i think i’m pretty caught up outside of aly and aj’s album which i still need to listen to 😔. i want to finally finish ‘Emma’ because my taste in books is kind of trashy and i want to be a more well rounded person yada yada also “how i lived, how she died” by mary crockett and another book of some kind. tv and movies….. there’s so many…. definitely legacies (tv), so much has happened and i know i shouldn’t look at spoilers but i’ve looked and i want to have THOUGHTS, i started what i like about you (tv) and i want to finish that, maid (tv), all american (tv)(i started it right before school started and haven’t watched since), regrettably all the netflix christmas movies, i watched tick tick boom today which was so good!, the last letter to your love (movie) and i solely want to watch just to see if i was right about something related to taylor swift, rewatch the andrew garfield spider-man movies (which i wanted to do in like september but now i’m like i don’t want to be like other girls) and just general things the group chat has mentioned but i never had the time

kevin day as a singer/ songwriter
IT‘S KEVIN DAY BITCHES YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS - originally this was supposed to be a kevin day writing songs, soft wholesome au thingy, it ended up in kevaaron angst with a happy ending. but i put conan gray songs out of kevin‘s point of view as a bonus??? so it‘s still singer/ songwriter kevin??
kevin day has always loved music. he loved it when his mother sang him lullabies when he couldn‘t sleep, when they danced around the kitchen screaming the words to the song from the radio on the top of their lungs, loved it when she taught him how to play the piano and the guitar.
but like every other good thing evermore took this from him, once they snatched him and burried him alive. riko hated music, so naturally it was forbidden for all of them. no happiness, no light. only ever exy, exy, exy.
don‘t get it wrong, kevin loved exy. he was the son of exy. kayleigh found exy, kayleigh gave it to him, it was in his blood. it was in his soul. and it brought him closer to his beloved mother, to the woman who made his life good, who gave him light and happiness and left him back alone. gave him to them.
however just as exy was in his blood, so was music. so whenever he was alone with his partner he would quietly hum or sing a song his mother used to sing him.
when jean moreau arrived at the nest hell broke out. riko was jealous because kevin would spend more time with the new kid than him. kevin wouldn‘t give the king enough attention so all of his subjects had to suffer.
it got worse with every passing day, with every look that lasted just a second too long, with every conversation whispered softly in french, with every lullaby kevin would sing for jean when he was scared, with every embrace and late night talk. with every stolen kiss, they had to pay. well, jean had to pay. kevin had to remain untouched, no scar was allowed to be visible on his perfect face, on his hands or any body part visible. jean however? jean was never allowed to leave the nest, he was riko‘s, he belonged to riko like some doll he could stab or kick or do whatever he felt like to.
the day kevin told riko to stop, was the day riko lost his patience. kevin day got better in exy, he took his favourite toy away from him, he had the audacity to talk against his king.
kevin always knew riko was unpredictable when he was angry, that the world was just black and red when he was mad with anger, but he never in a million years thought that this anger would ever be against him. that he would have to feel what jean felt every single day.
but he did this day, when riko broke his hand. it was also the day when kevin decided that it was time for them to leave. for both of them, jean and him.
„we‘re going“, he whispered in french when he came back to their shared dorm room. „we‘re leaving. you and me. my father, wymack, he has an exy team on his own. the foxes. we‘re going to join them. because i will not leave you here, understood?“
„we can‘t go, he will find me and while he cannot kill you, he certainly can kill me. no one really cares about me, anyways“, jean replied.
„oh is that so? well i for that matter care about you, you beautiful french bastard and now take your five things and we‘re going“
„kevin, we can‘t. not both of us. that‘s way too suspicious“, jean tried to reason.
„darling, it‘s more suspicous when i go alone, now come. we don‘t have much time. riko will look for you soon, if he doesn‘t already. i know the way out, maybe, if we‘re fast we can go to a more growded place before he catches up on us, maybe we can even reach the bus or a taxi before he comes. we have to try, we cannot stay here. i for once must go to the hospital, the bastard broke my playing hand“
„i‘ll make sure he won‘t come after you, you go. go and forget me. go and leave me alone. it‘s only a few more months before i go, only a few more months before it‘s all over. you don‘t have to watch that. just, go“, jean said, his voice tired and filled with emotion.
„i will get you out of here and you will give live a chance. i promis you will see the sun again“, kevin replied, tears running down his cheeks as he leaned in for one last kiss. „i love you“, he whispered into the darkness as he turned to go. kevin never heard the reply, he wasn‘t sure he wanted to.
so kevin tiptoed to the backdoor and left. just like that. until this day he didn‘t know what jean had to go through for him to be able to leave like that but he was thankful for it nonetheless.
somehow he made his way to psu and found his place in the team. well, not exactly found a place. more like got adopted by a scary 5“0 tall, stabby boy, who promised to keep him safe, his twin brother and their cousin who scared the living crap out of him.
„what is our routine? do we have 16 hour days as well here? when is practice? and do we choose our majors ourselves or does the master choose them for us?“, kevin asked the others when they were alone in their dorm.
„do we have WHAT now?“, nicky asked. „dude, no we do not have 16 hour days, we, you know, want to like surive?“
„oh, are we allowed to listen to music or does the king not approve that?“, kevin asked instead.
„dude i don‘t know what fucked up shit they did in evermore but you‘re allowed to do whatever the fuck you want here. and dan would more be a queen, but we just call her dan or captain?“
„oh, okay“, kevin said before turning around and leaving the room. his chest tightened, his arm hurt, he just wanted back on the court. but he wasn‘t allowed on there until his left arm was doing alright, and as long as he wasn‘t on the court he couldn‘t train his right hand to play.
the only other thing that could calm him right now was music. the sound of a piano, the strings of a guitar against his fingers, the scratching of a pen against paper as the notes are written down on it.
kevin wandered through the fox tower, more lost than ever, and somehow found himself in a music room. a dusty piano stood under a bright window, an old guitar was in the corner next to an alomst ancient drum set.
almost automatically his feet brought him to the piano and he began playing. he played and played, as if his life depended on it and kevin felt calmer and lighter than he did in years. the voice of his mother was in his head, singing lullabies and placing a kiss on his forhead.
his right hand was playing the old lullabies he remebered while the left hand rested on his tigh
„that was good“, a voice said, bored and unimpressed. he turned around to see one of the twins watching him. it was the one who couldn‘t hide all of his emotions like the one with the knives.
„aaron, right?“, kevin asked, voice hoarse from crying.
„how do you tell us apart? not even nicky can tell us apart like 90% of the time and he‘s basically our mom“, aaron replied.
„well, it‘s a 50/50 chance, isn‘t it? i was just lucky“, kevin replied.
the music room became his place of safetey and calmness after that day. he would return whenever he felt lost or sad or upset. be it 2 am or the middle of the day.
and aaron would join him more and more often, may it to study because „your music helps me concentrate“ or just to watch kevin play while the sunbeams chased over his pretty face.
and if kevin slowly fell in love with aaron in those shared hours it was nobody‘s business
however it didn‘t look like aaron was into him anyways, as the joining kevin in the music room got less and less, and the time spent with kateyln from the vixens got more and more. and suddenly all of the songs kevin wrote were about aaron. all kevin thought about was aaron. he joined him in his dreams. the nightmares from evermore were replaced by kevin dying alone in a dark void while aaron laughed at him with katelyn by his side.
it was one of those late nights, one of the 2 am sessions where emotions took over and the truth was just easier to take. it was one of those nights that aaron decided to go into the music room, he didn‘t konw why. maybe it was katelyn telling him she wasn‘t into him anymore. it‘s not even been a month. or was it two? aaron never was good with telling weeks apart from days or hours. it was all the same blur of colors and voices and the ever so present need to be perfect. nothing less was acceptable.
„why would you ever kiss me? i‘m not even half as pretty. you gave her your sweater, it‘s just polyester, but you like her better, wish i were heather“, it was kevin‘s voice, like an angle, filled with pain and sadness. aaron sat down on the floor, just listening, wondering who the fuck heather was. and who the fuck would ever break his heart.
„watch as she stands with her holding your hand, put your arm ’round her shoulder, now i‘m getting colder. but how could i hate her, she‘s such an angle. but then again kinda wish she was dead, as she walks by, what a sight for sore eyes. brighter than a blue sky. she‘s got you mesmerized while i die. why would you ever kiss me? i‘m not even half as pretty. you gave her your sweater. it‘s just polyester, but you like her better. wish i were heather. wish i were heather. wish i were heather. why would you ever kiss me? i‘m not even half as pretty. you gave her your sweater it‘s just polyester, but you like her better. wish i were katelyn“, the last word was barely audible and aaron would have missed it if he wouldn‘t have moved closer to kevin while listening to his song.
„why would you want to be katelyn?“, he asked kevin as before he could stop himself.
as kevin turned around the moon let shadwos dance around his beautiful face. aaron could see that he was batteling with himself. that he was about to say something he wouldn‘t normally allow himself to say. show weakness and vulnerability when strenght was all he knew.
„because you like her better. because i want to be the one you kiss“, kevin whispered, looking at the ground. his hair falling into his face, hiding his expression.
aaron moved closer and closer. there were only a few inches between them now. softly he took kevin‘s chin in his hand and lifted it, forced him to meet his eyes. „well, what if you were heather?“, aaron asked, a small smile dancing around his lips.
„but- but katelyn is heather“, kevin whispered.
„well, kately found herself a girl. thea. she dumped me. and i‘m actually glad she did, i wanted you anyways. i just couldn‘t admit it. i thought it was wrong, unnatural. but if something this beautiful is sinful, i understand how adam was able to make the sin. if a fallen angle is wrong in god‘s eyes i have no answer what is right“
he closed the distance between them and placed a soft kiss on kevin‘s lips.
kevin, confused and drunk on the smell and taste of aaron, kissed him back. hungrier. needier.
the taller boy softly put his arms around the waist of the smaller one and pulled him closer. „you do not understand how long i‘ve been waiting to do this“, he whispered against aaron‘s lips.
„believe me, i do“.
the next day kevin took a guitar and a blanket after exy training, took aaron‘s hand and told him to come. together they went to the roof (where andrew and neil were making out, as usual) but they didn‘t mind they went to the other side, andrew‘s death glare on them but what‘s new, and filmed an accoustic version of heather kevin would then later on youtube. heather became their song (weird choice i know but it‘s the song where they kissed for the first time) and so so kevin‘s music career started.
kevin kept writing songs - mostly about aaron - throughout his exy career and published them. his fans loved his songs. his fans loved making conspiracy theories about who the songs are for. they‘re losing their shit when they found out it was aaron. after kevin retires he becomes a fulltime musician and eventually even goes on tour.
BONUS - CONAN GRAY SONGS OUT OF KEVIN‘S POV
grow - years, after evermore. after he starts therapy (and takes it seriously) and he feels like his life slowly but steadily becomes better. aaron and him have been dating for a year or two. he is ready to grow, to become his own person. to be himself and do whatever he wants. he is ready to go into the world. he is ready to show them that he queen of exy is not afraid anymore. that he is worthy and he knows it.
comfort crowd - aaron comforting kevin. aaron knowing when he needed to be with the foxes and when he needed some alone time. or some aaron-kevin-time. i do believe that the foxes becomes his comfort crowd, because they‘ve all been through shit and i refuse to believe that they wouldn‘t care about kevin as they did with neil once they learned what that poor boy had to bo through.
the story - kevin wrote that song about him and jean and the nest. the boy and the boy are him and jean. it‘s the story of their time there and the second verse is kevin‘s story of fleeing from evermore. and the refrain is a metaphor for life, because his life wasn‘t funny. or sweet. or pretty. and the „it could work for you and me. it‘s not the end of the story“ is about him and aaron. the last song verse is about jean and that he hopes that he finds his happy end with jeremy.
maniac - kevin wrote that one when katelyn came back to aaron and asked him to take her back cause the girl she thought she was madly in love with broke her heart. but aaron refused to take her back, told her to go back to her ratback and leave him alone. he‘s with kevin now and he doesn‘t need her anymore. she can‘t get him back.
affluenza - kevin wrote that for allison. i don‘t know the deep story behind that, the song just gives me allison vibes.
wish you were sober - kevin wrote that after the first party he went to with the foxes after he joined him and it‘s obviously about aaron. drunk aaron to be exactly. drunk aaron has a special place in kevin‘s heart.
the cut that always bleeds - that one was when aaron dated katelyn and told kevin about it and kevin just died a little bit inside whenever he did.
fight or flight - he wrote that before aaron told him how he felt about him. he just didn‘t know how to put his feelings into words so he just wrote that song.
lookalike - kevin wrote that before aaron and him started dating, but when jean and jeremy started to become closer. he didn‘t take that well at that time as he had a massive crush on both jean (who refused to talk to him) and jeremy (who never looked at him twice but still). and he just daydreamed about dating jeremy so much it almost felt like a betrayal when he started dating jean.
the king - honestly? aaron dating katelyn but nonetheless always coming back to kevin. kevin knows that. that‘s why he wrote the song.
(can we be friends?) - this is about jean/ jeremy when kevin didn‘t really have friends. jean/ jeremy at the time of the nest probably.
(online love) - this one‘s about jeremy. cause let‘s be honest, at least one of those songs is about jeremy.
crush culture - that one is the result of an angry 4 am song writing session when aaron dated katelyn and jj was just starting to date.
generation why - this one‘s for the millenials. his generation in this au.
heather - heather is aaron, basically he‘s talking about having a massive crush on aaron but aaron would never feel the same cuz he‘s obviously straight and madly in love with katelyn (= heather) who is just stunning and gorgeous and beautiful and so much better than kevin
overdrive - this one was written after the first time the twins and nicky took him to eden‘s. the time when kevin started to catch feelings for aaron.

Prompts open? Bet maybe foxes(and Andrew) slowly finding out how fucked up Neil’s mom was to him?(I get it was to survive but it was still abuse)
Tumblr media
Since this one got kinda... Uh... Long... And answered both of these prompts I decided to combine them!! I didn't include a separate one for Andrew because he's present for a couple of them and by the time I reached the end it was like 6600 words and an Andrew POV would probably add another 2000 because I'm me and I always get carried away with Andrew POV.
If you’d rather read this on AO3 you can do so here.
4 times the Foxes found out how fucked up Mary was to Neil, and the 1 time Neil actually admitted it
ONE - ALLISON
Allison had been taking Neil shopping, which in itself wasn't really a weird occurrence. Allison would take any of her teammates shopping if that's what needed to happen to get them to stop looking like a dirty hobo. As it happened, Neil was just the worst offender and so she pestered him about it more often than not. It was remarkable how the guy could be dating the Monster and still look like that. Not that Andrew Minyard was a fashion icon or anything, but the miniature psychopath at least understood the concept of aesthetic and made sure the people around him wore things that actually fit.
Well, most of the people around him.
Point being, Neil needed a bit of extra help, and Allison was more than happy to supply it. So she'd taken to dragging him out shopping with her once a week. It was basically therapy - and fuck if that boy didn't need some of that.
(But Allison wasn't going to say that in front of Neil or he'd probably get hives…)
Usually, the shopping trips all went about the same. Allison would drag Neil along, Neil would acquiesce until he got hungry, then he'd get bitchy and after Allison fed him he'd calm the fuck down enough to try on more things before refusing to get anything. On a very rare occasion she would get him to accept a shirt or a new pair of pants. His weakness was shoes, but she tries not to exploit that too often.
Today, however, was different - because today Allison caught Neil's eyes catching on a particular hoodie. If it had been just once she would have passed it off, but this was at least the fourth time Neil had sought it out in the whole ten minutes they'd been in the narrow clothing store and his eyes didn't just catch, they lingered. Which meant that Neil was interested, that he liked something. This was a breakthrough! Especially since the hoodie was new and had color, rather than the drab shit he was always wearing. It was a very pretty cerulean blue with black stitching and was of a less bulky design than the other two Neil owned (one of which was the Foxes one she'd never seen him wear off-campus). In the proper size it would fit his frame nicely, she could tell just by looking at it, and she was low-key impressed that something with general style had been the thing to catch his eye.
Allison grinned and nudged him. "Hey, just grab it. You could use a new hoodie."
Neil's attention snapped to her and Allison wasn't prepared for the flash of instinctive panic that raked through his eyes. "No, I didn't- I don't-" He raised his hands apologetically, which was weird, then seemed to catch himself and dropped them immediately. Allison could see him struggling not to look over at the sweatshirt and for the life of her she didn't understand why. But now she needed to know.
She gave him a look. "Uh, yes you did, and you do. What's the big deal? So what, you like it. Get it." She shrugged, hoping nonchalance would encourage him to stop being a weirdo about it.
"Nah," Neil said with a shrug. "It's fine. I've got hoodies."
Allison thought about letting it go, she really did, but she was too curious. But she also knew that the more she seemed to care about the answer she was prodding for, the less likely Neil was going to give it. So she pretended to look at some of the surrounding clothing without really registering what she was shuffling through. "You act like you've never bought something just because you wanted it before," she said with her usual level of scathing judgement.
"It was too dangerous," came Neil's distracted response. When Allison peaked over at him, her hand freezing on the shoulder of a sweater, about to slide it down the rack, she saw that he was looking at the hoodie again, studying it with a too-careful blankness she was beginning to recognize as Neil-in-memory.
"Getting something you wanted was too dangerous?" It was harder this time to keep her tone casual but she managed it well enough that Neil didn't fully snap out of his thoughts, wherever they were.
He shrugged. "It was distracting. If you had things you cared about you'd lose sight of survival, or make stupid mistakes."
Allison just stared at him. "You weren't allowed to have things you wanted… because they'd be distracting? Neil that's really fucked up."
Neil looked over at her and grimaced, pulling away from the hoodie. "Whatever, it's not a big deal. Come on, are you done shopping yet?"
For another moment Allison stared, then she stalked forward and violently grabbed the hoodie from the rack, ignoring Neil's startled protests.
"No," she said, pointing at him with her free hand. "You aren't some kid on the run anymore and you don't have to follow your mom's fucked up rules. If you want something, you're going to get it, damn it." If Neil tried to protest again she didn't see it because she'd already whirled around to head up toward the checkout.
Fuck you, Mary.
TWO - DAN
Team Night was something Dan instated right after finals last year. One night a week they all got dinner after practice. The whole team had to be there for at least part of the time. Sometimes they got along, sometimes they fought like half-crazed rabbis raccoons, but they were all together in a situation that wasn't about exy (no matter how many times Kevin or Neil brought it up). If there was anything Dan had learned over her years as Team Captain, it was that they would always operate better on the court if they could also work together off of it.
Tonight they'd gone out to dinner with the whole team before splitting off into various groups back at the dorms. Renee had gone off with Allison and Nicky while Aaron had left right from the restaurant to meet up with Katelyn. The freshmen had split into their own groups - they were still working out their hierarchy among themselves and Dan knew by now that she just had to let it happen - which had left her and Matt and, surprisingly enough, Neil and Andrew. She hadn't really expected the other two to accept her invitation to join them in Matt's room for a movie, but when she's offered Neil had easily agreed and Andrew hadn't protested.
A part of her had still expected Andrew to peel off and go back to his own dorm once they'd returned to Fox Tower, but the reticent goalkeeper had followed them all into the room with no complaint.
"All right!" Matt announced with a grin once the door was shut and locked behind them, crossing to where he kept the booze. "Power Couple Movie Night! Whatcha guys want? Babe?"
Dan chuckled and rolled her eyes affectionately. "You're ridiculous and I love you. I'll have a whisky sour." She looked to Andrew and Neil. "What about you guys? He just stocked up so there's a bit of everything."
"Babe, you're making me sound like an alcoholic."
Dan dismissed the complaint with a wave of her hand and smiled over at the other two.
"Whisky straight." That was Andrew.
Neil just shrugged. "I don't need anything," he said.
"Do you have Dr. Pepper?" Andrew asked, apparently not done.
Matt nodded, lifting a mostly-full two-liter for him to see and setting it on the surface of the cabinet.
"He'll have that with amaretto."
"Andrew."
"Neil."
Dan tried not to be too obvious about how closely she was watching them. It wasn't even a 'how could they be together?' thing. It was just that… Neil was this big mystery, and Andrew was also a big mystery. And now they were together and that just made the mystery balloon exponentially. The two of them fit together in a way that was somehow both surprising and like nothing in the world could make more sense. They had a whole language together of looks and gestures, of silent understandings that the rest of them couldn't even begin to interpret. In a way, this was just like any other couple. Even now, Dan shot a glance over at Matt and they shared a look of their own before resuming their subtle observations of the other couple. Somehow it was different with Andrew and Neil though. Somehow it seemed… heavier. It was fascinating and also kinda unsettling, which only made Dan want to figure it out even more.
After an extended silence where Neil and Andrew had some indecipherable conversation with their eyes alone, Neil sighed, apparently conceding defeat, and nodded agreement to his boyfriend's drink order.
"All right! Neilio is drinking with us tonight!" Matt pumped a fist into the air, shattering the residual tension with his enthusiasm. Dan had probably never loved anyone so much in her life.
Neil smirked his own affection for the big lug and flopped onto the couch, Andrew following with less flourish but a level of relaxed comfort that made Dan's heart soar. It was really happening. Andrew was letting himself trust them, letting himself be a part of the team, letting himself be… one of their friends.
Matt finished making their drinks and brought them over on a serving tray he had been a little bit too excited to buy.
Neil took his drink and cautiously sniffed it, wrinkling his nose. "It smells sweet," he complained.
"You have two choices when it comes to liquor, Josten. It either tastes sweet or it tastes like alcohol." Andrew was entirely unsympathetic, though his gaze remained focused on Neil even as he sipped his whisky. Apparently, this was some either-or that Neil was willing to concede to because he sighed and sipped the drink. After a moment he hummed and took another sip. Another sip turned into a second drink as the four of them collectively decided to skip the movie and instead hang out and talk about the worst movies they'd ever seen. Andrew, surprisingly, had a lot to contribute - as he had apparently seen a lot of movies and had Opinions about all of them. It was very weird and kinda surreal, but also made Dan feel almost giddy.
"Well shit, Neil, if it was just a matter of you not liking the taste of alcohol we'd have stocked up on wine coolers ages ago," Matt said as he handed Neil his third glass later on in the night. He grinned and perched on the armrest of her chair. Dan smiled up at him when he put his arm around her, leaning against him and sipping her own drink as she turned her attention back to the other couple.
The other couple. Well, that was weird.
"Nah, I still wouldn't have had anything," Neil said after another, fuller drink. He leaned back, comfortable. Dan noticed that he and Andrew weren't touching but there was still a weird intimacy with their proximity. It hurt her brain to think about so she didn't focus on it overmuch. Then Neil said, "Mom only brought out the alcohol when I needed to be stitched up," and Dan froze with her drink halfway back up to her mouth. Neil didn't seem to notice, looking into his cup as he continued. "No hospitals, you know, and when I was a kid I always cried a lot and was really loud about it unless I was too drunk to feel anything at all."
And when I was a kid I always cried a lot and was really loud unless I was too drunk to feel anything at all.
When I was a kid…
It felt like all the air had been sucked out of the room. Dan peripherally noticed that she wasn't the only one who had gone still. It was so rare for Neil to say anything about his time before he joined the Foxes. It was even more rare for him to bring up his mother - especially in such a… disturbingly revealing way.
Matt was the one to break the silence. "When you say you were a kid you mean…?" There was a false lightness in his voice, like he was trying not to alert Neil to how much he was revealing. Andrew cut him a glare but then looked to Neil without interrupting.
Neil shrugged, swirling his glass lightly, apparently fascinated with the ice as it clinked gently against the sides of the glass. He poked at them with his mixing straw. "Mm, Lola scared me, y'know? I didn't want her to stitch me up. So I begged mum. Dad would hurt her too if she couldn't keep me quiet. I tried, but being noisy was always a problem for me. 's how I usually got in trouble anyhow. Or by not being still enough. Or dropping knives." Neil shivered, his free hand rubbing against a spot on his abdomen like he was worrying away at a memory, some phantom ache from a past that he could never quiet escape from.
Andrew, apparently, had decided this was enough. He reached forward and pulled the glass from Neil's hand with a gentleness that shouldn't surprise Dan anymore. He set the glass on the table and stood, then tugged Neil up with him. He didn't let go of the striker's hand even when he got the other man standing. Once he was sure the other would be steady he glanced over at them with a dark, steady threat in his eyes. "We are leaving now."
A sound beside her alerted Dan to the beginning of Matt's protest and she elbowed him before he could complete it. In its place, she gave a strained smile and nodded. "Of course. You guys are probably tired. See you tomorrow!"
Neil raised his hand in a small wave but he still seemed a little lost, his expression closed, his mind somewhere else.
When the door closed behind them, Matt stood up and walked over to lock it, then he stood there for a moment before turning to face her. His expression was dark and angry and echoed the storm stirring in his own heart.
"Neil went on the run when he was ten."
It might have seemed a random statement, but Dan was following the same line of thought and she nodded. They'd known that Neil's dad was a bastard, knew he'd been hurt by him and his people when they'd been on the run and it wasn't a far toss to infer that he'd been hurt earlier too. But this confirmation was blood-chilling. Mary's part in it was not comforting.
"She did nothing, Dan. She did nothing. She let him get hurt and then she got him drunk as a little fucking kid to stitch him up again. I know it was a fucked up situation, and I'm sure it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows for her but fuck Dan. Fuck."
Dan nodded, setting down her drink and rising from the chair so she could go to Matt. She knew that she only had a surface understanding of the situation. She couldn't imagine what Mary might have gone through herself, but she couldn't find enough compassion in her heart to make excuses for her. Maybe that made her heartless, she didn't fucking care. What she cared about was that Mary let her own son be hurt badly enough that he needed to get drunk and get stitched up over and over again, before and after they went on the run. What she cared about was that Mary hurt her son over and over herself in order to control him, to keep him under her thumb. Maybe she did it because that's how she thought she was protecting him but intentions meant shit.
Lesser evils were still evil.
There are always choices, always options, and Mary's choices had traumatized Neil just as much as the Butcher's had. Maybe Neil had complicated feelings about his mother but Dan didn't. She had a very clear opinion, actually.
Fuck you, Mary.
THREE - MATT
"Okay so, but why Andrew?" Matt didn't mean anything negative with the question, but he flipped a hand in apology when Neil glared over at him. "I didn't mean it that way. I mean like -- is your type short, blond, and stabby or…?"
"I don't have a type. I don't swing."
Well that made no sense.
"Except for Andrew," Matt clarified, reminding Neil that he was self-admittedly committed to the Monster.
Neil nodded without hesitation. "Except for Andrew," he agreed.
"Right… but… why? Why only Andrew? Didn't you ever like… like other guys, or girls?" Matt studied his best friend, desperate to understand him. He wasn't even being anti-Andrew about this, he was just trying to learn more about Neil and this integral part of him. Neil said he didn't swing, and then of all people to fall for - he falls for Andrew. Matt had thought that maybe Neil had been shy about admitting he was gay or something, but Neil was pretty confident about the whole not-swinging thing. Matt got that there were other sexualities out there, but the idea of just… not wanting anything just didn't make sense to him.
He was surprised when Neil actually said -- "Sure, yeah, when I was like, fourteen or whatever. I wouldn't say I liked anyone, but I noticed girls."
Matt blinked and looked over at him, letting the game controller rest on his lap. "Wait, you did?"
Neil shrugged. "Yeah, but it wasn't allowed so…"
"It wasn't… allowed?" Matt frowned, lost.
"My mom knew they'd be a distraction, that it was too dangerous for me to fall for someone. I don't think it occurred to her that I might like a guy, so when she realized I was noticing girls she made sure I didn't anymore."
Matt was silent for a long moment, letting the implication of that sink in. "When you said she 'made sure' you didn't notice girls…?"
Neil shrugged. "I was stupid. Just telling me wasn't going to do anything." But his friend's casual nonchalance was gone and Matt watched as the other man withdrew into himself. His expression closed down and he scratched his nails through his hair, against his scalp in an anxious tick Matt was pretty sure Neil didn't even realize he did.
A flare of rage heated his lungs and it took concentrated effort to swallow it down. He could imagine what Mary might have done to her son to drill the lesson home.
"That's really fucked up, Neil."
Neil just shrugged, then nodded at the tv. "Are you gonna play or what?" Matt could see that his friend didn't want to talk about it so he let it go, but he wasn't going to forget it.
"Yeah. How about you order some pizza or something? I'm getting fucking hungry." A bit of the tension broke and Neil flashed him a small smile before pushing off the couch to go get his phone to make the order. Matt watched him go and took another breath to make sure his anger was packed away for later.
Fuck you, Mary.
FOUR - NICKY
Christmas! Nicky was so fucking excited about Christmas this year. Not only would Erik be coming into town, but the whole family would be there! Well, the family that mattered anyway. Aaron was bringing Katelyn, Andrew would be there and participating, and Neil was staying with them for the entirety of winter break. It was going to be amazing!!
Already, in the few days since school had let out, Nicky had set about Christmas-ifying the whole house and it was looking amazing if he did say so himself, which he did.
Today was going to be particularly exciting because he had managed to get Neil to agree to go Christmas shopping with him. Erik would be arriving tomorrow morning and Nicky still hadn't gotten his present. Or Aaron's. Or Andrew's. Or Neil's… He'd gotten Katelyn's though! He'd seen an absolutely gorgeous sweater at the mall the other week in just her color so he'd swiped it up. Point being, he had some catching up to do and he suspected that Neil was also behind on his Christmas shopping.
This was confirmed shortly after they arrived at the mall and Nicky asked Neil what he'd gotten for Andrew.
Neil blinked at him, like he was caught off guard by the question.
"I don't think we're getting each other anything," he said, looking downright confused.
"Oh. Oh Neil. Oh Neil no. No, you are definitely getting gifts for each other. You're a couple!"
Neil looked vaguely uncomfortable as he shrugged, but he didn't deny the label and Nicky counted that as progress. "I don't think we're the gift-giving kind…"
Clearly, Neil hadn't been paying attention to the fact that Andrew had been gifting Neil at every fucking opportunity since they'd met. Clothes, keys, food, drinks, more clothes, a phone. At first, Nicky had just thought it was Andrew being possessive in the way he was possessive of all the people he'd decided we're his. It wasn't until after the two had come clean about their relationship (relationship!!!) that Nicky had thought back and realized that Andrew wasn't half as generous with the rest of them. Honestly, Nicky was a bit embarrassed for not noticing it all sooner. This whole time, Nicky thought he was being cryptic when he was just being really, really gay. For shame.
"Mm, well," Nicky hedged, feeling pity for the poor blind idiot. At least he was cute. "You're wrong, but we won't get into it. Just trust me when I say that Andrew has definitely gotten you something." Probably multiple things, actually, but Nicky didn't want to shock the poor cute dummy. "And you can't tell me that you don't want to give him a gift." Nicky stopped, frowning at Neil in disapproval.
"It's not that," Neil admitted, and Nicky wasn't sure he'd ever seen the younger man look more awkward.
"Then what is it. Come on, kid, tell Uncle Nicky."
Neil made a face. "Only if you never say that again."
Nicky laughed, though he realized Neil had a point. That might have been a bit much. "Deal. So what is it?"
Neil shrugged, fidgeting in a restless way that Nicky recognized as one of Neil's tells when he was uncertain or nervous. Neil was someone who needed to be in motion, someone who needed to do things. Nicky related to that, heavily, so he linked his arm through Neil's and tugged him into walking again. The motion seemed to help, and after a few minutes, Neil finally spoke up.
"I've never really done the whole Christmas or birthday thing. Especially not since me and my mom, you know…" He drifted off vaguely, gesturing with one hand like that's was supposed to indicate all the time he and his mom were running from his psycho dad and his evil butcher-buddy minions. Nicky nodded like it had and Neil continued. "It just feels… weird, you know. Like it's a thing that real people do. They go to school and they have holidays with families that don't want to kill them or each other. They buy each other presents that they don't need and that's… normal. But it just doesn't make sense to me."
There was a lot to unpack there, but Nicky's mind caught on the first thing Neil had said and it kept replaying over and over on his head like a skipping record.
Like it's a thing that real people do.
Like Neil wasn't… real.
Nicky stopped walking again, his heart clenching suddenly in his chest. "Wait, hold on. Rewind. Neil, you realize that you are a real person, right?"
Tension wiped Neil's face into an awful blankness and normally Nicky would let it go. He'd make a joke and try and get them back to something lighter, but this was… something was just so wrong about that and he couldn't ignore it.
"Neil," he implored, hands on both the younger man's shoulders, gripping tightly, willing him to open up to him.
Maybe it was a testament to the season of sharing, or maybe it was proof that he and Neil had come a long way since those first few months over a year ago, but for whatever reason, Neil didn't brush him off and he didn't pull away. Instead, he sighed and gave a small shrug, shuffling his feet as he apparently searched for the right words like they were hidden between his shoelaces.
"I didn't feel real for a long time, you know. I couldn't be. Mom was the one who made all the identities for me, the one who chose the names and the covers. She was the one who created everything about the boys I was supposed to be, down to their interests in school and outside of it, just in case someone asked me when she wasn't around. She'd test me on them. I studied those boys with more dedication than I studied for my classes when I was actually in school."
Nicky frowned, confused. "What about your interests and what you were like."
Neil shrugged. "I didn't have any. I wasn't like anything, unless you can count fear as a personality trait."
That… didn't make sense. Neil was saying words, and individually, Nicky knew what they meant, but his brain was struggling to comprehend exactly what they meant when put together in that order.
"But… that's not possible. What about when you saw something you liked, or wanted, or did something that you just… enjoyed. A tv show or, fuck, math. You like math right? That's a part of your personality." He heard the desperation in his own voice but he was too distracted by the conundrum of Neil's 'I wasn't a real person's reveal that he didn't even care to attempt to rein it in.
"Not until I got to Palmetto," Neil admitted. "I didn't have to take a math class my senior year because my forged transcripts already had the required number of classes to graduate and it seemed conspicuous to take more than that. Your average teenager doesn't like math."
"But you thought about it, right? When you were signing up for classes, you thought about adding math, then actively chose not to." A picture of understanding was beginning to form and Nicky felt a little bit sick with what it showed.
Neil frowned, like he was thinking about it, then gave a small nod of reluctant agreement.
"So… there was something you liked, something that was you and you just, what, instinctively went 'No, bad idea'. Why?"
"It's what my mom would have done," was Neil's instant, confident reply. He hadn't even had to think about that one. Then, to Nicky's horror, he elaborated with, "Mom was a stickler on that kind of stuff. If I liked something, if I felt pulled to anything, it was dangerous and bad. I learned quickly enough to avoid anything that interested me so it wouldn't distract me. Surviving was what was important."
Yeah. Yeah Nicky definitely felt a bit sick now.
"When you say that you 'learned quickly enough'...?" Nicky wasn't sure he actually wanted to know, but that didn't stop him from asking the question.
"Mom--" Neil actively stopped himself this time. "It isn't important. Look… are we going to go shopping or what?"
Nicky wasn't willing to let it go. "Neil. Did she… like, hurt you? For having interests?"
Now Neil looked more than just a little uncomfortable, and the way he didn't meet Nicky's eyes was all the answer he needed. Nicky wanted to hug Neil just then, but he managed, at the last second, to hold himself back. He'd probably pushed harder than he should have already and he was trying to be better about boundaries. Instead he squeezes his shoulders and then pulled his hands away.
"Well, come on. Let's finish shopping. I'll help you pick out something for Andrew if you aren't sure what to get him."
Neil looked so visibly relieved that Nicky's heart broke. "Ah, yeah… thanks Nicky." The small smile he shot him was enough that Nicky forgot the boundary thing and just hugged him. Ugh, that poor kid. No wonder he was so confused whenever anyone was kind to him if his own mother had treated him like he wasn't even a real person to the point where Neil had legitimately started to believe it. Nicky had his issues with his parents, all the Foxes did -- it was part of what made them Foxes -- but this was kind of another level.
Nicky kept his arm around Neil's shoulders as he lead the younger man off to shop, now determined to make this the best fucking Christmas ever. Because Neil was a real fucking person and he deserved that frivolous normalcy. He deserved to like things and to want things.
Fuck you, Mary.
+1 - AARON
Aaron didn't usually care about whatever was happening in Josten's weird little brain. It wasn't a place he was eager to explore, to be perfectly fucking honest, and he was unfortunate enough to be subjected with the assshole's proximity often enough as it was. However, it was hard to ignore the man when he was having a literal mental breakdown right in front of him. He wished he could. He wished he could turn around and walk away, shut the door, and go back to not caring. Unfortunately, parallels had just been drawn that he couldn't unsee and now turning his back on Neil almost felt personal. It was incredibly uncomfortable and for a long moment Aaron just sat there, silent, in the wake of what just happened.
It had gone like this:
Andrew and Neil had been on separate ends of the couch doing homework. Nicky and Kevin were still sleeping off the trip to Eden's Twilight last night, and Aaron was slowly letting himself wake up to a hot cup of coffee and some random show on tv. Then that random show had transitioned into some kind of true crime show that had dragged everyone's attention to the screen with a single word.
Wesninski.
As it turned out, the show wasn't actually about the Wesninskis, but rather about crime in Europe. The Wesninski mention was due to the current segment on the Hatfords, a British crime syndicate -- the one Neil's mother hailed from. It was her picture on the screen when their collective attention all snapped to the screen, and the tension in the room suddenly increased tenfold.
Mothers were a bit of a complicated topic for everyone in the room. It was also probably the one thing that Andrew was unwilling to touch with a ten-foot pole, not even for Neil - and Aaron was long since past denying that those two had something going on far deeper than sexual tension and a disdain for ninety percent of humanity.
So the room had frozen, holding a breath with a shared lung. Then Andrew had stood, moving to snatch up the remote so he could turn off the TV when Neil said, "No."
Aaron had never seen Andrew stop so fast in his life. His twin's face remained blank, but there was a darkness in his eyes that Aaron was queasily familiar with. It was a cruel, angry darkness and he didn't envy Neil for being the subject of it as Andrew turned his gaze on the striker.
"If you want to cry over that bitch I am not going to stick around to suffer it." The words came out low and hissed and even Aaron could hear the sharp rage beneath the forced facade of indifference Andrew was attempting to keep in place.
Neil looked like he wanted to hit Andrew but he managed to keep his response to a sharp, venomous, "Fuck you."
Andrew held the remote up to eye level then dropped it. It landed hard enough on the table that it bounced off, the back popping off and the batteries scattering. Then he was striding out the front door. Aaron expected it to slam, but somehow the gentle click of it just under the murmur of the crime show was just as finite.
It was like getting to watch a moment he'd lived over and over again over the course of years from the outside for the first time. In fact, it wasn't like that - that's what it was. Something anxious and sick curled in the pit of his stomach as Aaron looked from the closed door to Neil's tense, shaken form. He hated this. He hated sympathising with Neil. He hated understanding Andrew's anger. He hated not being able to pick a side. Aaron had heard enough about Mary Hatford to know that she was just as fucked up as Nathan Wesninski, dragging her son around, forcing him into isolation, beating him, fucking him over socially for his whole damn life when she probably could have just saved them both by either going straight to the FBI or calling up her own crime family. He knew that Neil didn't blame his mom when he probably should. He knew he made excuses, that he grieved for her. He knew he missed her and he also knew that it was really, supremely fucked up.
He also knew that he was just as guilty for the unworthy idolization of an abuser. It had taken him years to get to the point where he was willing to admit that, though. It was meeting Katelyn that had him finally looking at his past with a sobering dose of reality. It was only after months of wrestling with himself that he'd finally been able to accept the truth. Months of Katelyn's steadfast support, months of sessions with Bee beyond the joint sessions with Andrew, months of introspection that left him mentally and emotionally wrung dry -- and Tilda hadn't had half the physical and emotional ammo that Mary Hatford had probably levied against her young son.
Aaron watched Neil vibrate in place, watched his hands curl and his throat work, watched the pain and the rage and the grief flash through his eyes even as he tried to swallow it all down. He watched Neil, but he saw himself, and it was more than disconcerting.
He didn't make the conscious decision to speak before he said, "I get it." In fact, he almost didn't realize he had spoken until Neil snapped his attention over to him like he'd forgotten he was still in the room at all.
Neil didn't respond, probably too caught up with the war in his own head to form words -- a rarity for the loud-mouthed striker.
"She was all you had," Aaron said, and he wasn't sure if he was actually talking to Neil, or talking to the version of himself that still clung to the corner of his memories, desperate to validate the only person that might have loved him, the one person that should have loved him, when he needed it the most. "She was all you had, and that's what kept you going. Not her rules and not whatever it was that she did to make sure you survived. That it was her and you, that you had each other, and that that meant something. She'd do whatever it took to protect you, she was the only one who would do that, and it was everything, right?"
He could tell by the widening of Neil's eyes that he'd hit the nail on the head. He didn't look away as he continued with his truths, knowing he was probably the only person that had ever vocalized an understanding -- that he was probably the only person who could understand.
"And then she was gone. And it wasn't only her that died. It was everything that she was supposed to be. She died, and all you had left were the 'almost's and 'not enough's and the 'never again's. And if you let yourself believe that she was just as bad then everything was for nothing. All the times you cared. All the times you tried. All the times you did everything you could to be what she expected of you. None of it would matter, because she was gone, and she could never redeem herself, and it was all pointless." Aaron heard his voice like someone else was speaking. It was too calm, too quiet, too knowing. It didn't feel the desert in his chest, scorching and dry and far too exposed. He saw Neil's reaction like he was looking in a mirror and it was more than a little bit unsettling. He understood the flash of anger in his eyes, the stubborn refusal in the set of his jaw, then the reluctant acceptance when his shoulders dropped. Aaron hated understanding anything about Neil Josten. He hated even more that it was this that they had to share. Something so raw, so close to home it had a permanent home inside his chest, nestled between his lungs. It wasn't fair.
Then again, he was a Fox for a reason he guessed. Life just wasn't fucking fair to a Fox.
Neil looked away, then deflated against his corner of the couch. He tilted his head back and Aaron saw his throat work as he fought emotions neither of them wanted Aaron to be a witness to. Aaron averted his eyes. He only looked up again when Neil spoke. The other man's voice was quiet but steady.
"The one thing she harped on most, more than anything else, was how attachments to anyone or anything other than my own survival were going to get me killed. Even to her. She told me so many times to run, leave her behind, but I… I never could. She never left me behind, even when there were times when I wanted her to. She'd probably be rolling in her grave if she could see me now…" Neil's voice drifted off as his gaze locked on the front door over Aaron's shoulder. Aaron didn't need to be psychic to know that he was thinking specifically about Andrew, about how much he'd risked for Andrew - not just to be with him, but also to protect him. Going to Evermore, allowing Nathan's men to take him quietly… yeah, Mary probably wouldn't be too happy about that, and not in the caring, not wanting Neil hurt way. She'd be pissed that Neil cared about something so much to take that risk, after all she'd done to try and beat that ability out of him.
"She was trying to make me soulless," Neil said without taking his eyes away from the door. "She hated it so much whenever I showed any glimmer of a personality. Whenever I was anything other than a possession she kept and controlled. My mother loved me, in her own way…" His mouth tensed, pursed, then he looked at Aaron.
For a moment, the two of them just looked at each other, a shared understanding between them.
"That's not enough," Aaron finally said.
Neil looked down, then up, meeting his eyes. "No," he agreed, "it's not."
On the tv, the show was still talking about the Hatfords. Not all that much time had actually passed since the segment started. Neil looked at the tv, then stood and gathered up the scattered pieces of the remote. He put it back together and spared one more glance at the screen, which now showed a picture of the Hatford family at some event when Mary and her brothers were teenagers. Then he lifted the remote and resolutely changed the channel.
"I'm going to take the car to pick up some food, you want anything?" Neil asked as he moved to get his shoes, then take his keys from the hook near the door.
Aaron snorted. "No. I'll order something if I get hungry." There was still some time until he'd want lunch, but he knew this dance by now. Neil and Andrew would drive off together. If he wanted food he was better off taking it into his own hands. It was entirely likely the other two wouldn't be back until closer to dinner.
Neil nodded once, then was out the door. Aaron watched him go, then sighed and turned back to his coffee, considering it.
He didn't like sharing something with Neil fucking Josten. It was annoying and uncomfortable. But all the same… he understood. And like it or not, they were tied together now. Maybe he wasn't ready to say 'fuck you' to the memory of his own mother, and Neil definitely wasn't ready to do the same regarding Mary Hatford, but they could acknowledge the similarities in their stories and that was a start -- for both of them.
Aaron sighed and closed his eyes. He pointedly didn't think about his own mother and instead let himself eagerly latch onto the other man's sympathetic demon as he thought, with vehemence, 'Fuck you, Mary.'

Friendship between Allison and Andrew.
Allison is friends with Neil, but she never spoke to Andrew after he attacked her for hitting Aaron. Although she understood why he did that and Katelyn told her about the treatment the brothers had.
But like anyone else, she prefers not to talk to him.
Neil's birthday is coming up. The foxes are preparing a surprise for you, something simple, pizza and alcohol.
It's the morning before his birthday, so Nicky asks Neil to go with him to buy new clothes (he doesn't want to, but Nicky insists too much), so that the rest of the foxes can prepare everything. They take Andrew's car.
Andrew ordered the cake. A message came from the bakery, your order was ready. He needed his car, but Neil had him.
Matt had gone to buy drinks, the only person with a car was Allison.
He explained that he needed the car, but she refused to loan him it. Allison offered to drive him, Andrew hesitated for a few seconds, but it is for Neil and he wasn't going to walk downtown, so he agreed.
The journey was silent. Allison put on the radio so that the moment is not so awkward. From the radio came a female voice talking about the life of a famous person and criticizing a lot. Allison went to turn off the radio. "I hate these shows where they just talk about other people's lives. As if they know them." She sounded angry, as if she had ever experienced something similar. "They talked about Kevin last week, can you believe it? Some idiot said he betrayed the raven." Andrew didn't expect that reaction from Allison, he didn't expect her to get mad because someone was badmouthing Kevin. Neil had told him that she would always side with the foxes, without exception, but Andrew didn't have much faith in that.
Maybe Alison hadn't had such a perfect life.
She parked a block from the bakery. They walked in silence. Someone yelled at Allison "nice ass!" and worse things. They were a bunch of drunk guys on the next block. She endured the first few words, but the next were too much. He went to the group of boys and hit the boy. The rest started laughing "bro, you got hit by a girl", that made Allison more furious. She try to control herself, is very strong, but they were many. But one hit her on the butt.
Andrew didn't want to interfere. He knows how strong Allison is. But seeing the scene, he couldn't stop thinking of himself saying "please stop." He ran out and pulled out a knife. "I'm sorry brother, we didn't know it was your girlfriend" and they ran away. "If you ever lay a hand on me again, I swear I'll cut off each and every one of you jugular!".
"I can't believe it, they only left because they thought you were my boyfriend!" She has a lot of helplessness and a little fear, street harassment is something that always terrified her. "And because I have a knife" said Andrew. "Thanks. I don't know what would have happened if you weren't here." Suddenly, that thought terrified her "oh my god, Andrew, what if they did something else? What if I never came home?" she sat on the sidewalk and started crying "seriously, thanks Andrew." They were silent for a few minutes while Allison recovered.
The next day, Andrew and Neil talked about Allison and what happened yesterday. Andrew's muscles were tense, that situation brought back many memories. Neil calmed him down.
From there, he began to get closer to Allison. He wanted to accompany her everywhere, he was afraid something would happen to her.
He realized that they have things in common. Allison knew a lot about cars and praised Andrew's clothes.
Allison painted his nails black. And Andrew loved Kevin's disapproving face (he was envious, if he did that, the press would criticize him) and he also loved that Neil couldn't stop looking at him.
Everyone was amazed at their friendship. Except for Renee, she knows them very well.
I hope you liked it 💛. And please, if you are one of those who says "compliments" to women as they walk down the street, let me tell you that you are the problem.

Why not more soft andreil headcanons
Neil enjoys watching horror movies. He's one of those people who can watch True Crime documentaries and still be able to sleep that night('cause he's got Andrew there and he's learned how to sleep more easily). On the other hand, Andrew hates watching horror movies. Coupled with the fact that he believes their apartment is haunted, there is no way he can fall asleep at night after watching one.
No matter what, these two will share a goodbye kiss. Even if they just had a fight, they will give each other one. The kisses always mean, "Stay safe, come back, I'll miss you," and on the off chance that something happens they want to make sure they have that.
Once, when they weren't yet on the same pro teams, the bus transporting Andrew's got hit. Andrew managed to get away with just a broken leg, but he was rushing to get out of the hospital as quickly as possible (even though he didn't have crutches or a doctor's approval or anything). Though Neil understood, he was out of his mind with worry for two days, only managing to relax after Andrew was back in their apartment.
("Ow..." "What? What is it? Do you need an ice pack? Heat pack? Painkillers? The cats? What - ?" "Neil, I just moved because I had a cramp - " "Want me to massage it?" "Through the cast?")
Neil is upset about not getting a duck, but that just means he's attached to the ducks at the lake they go to. He names them: Green Goose, Mother Mother, Baby 1, Destined to be an Eagle, Biter, Don't Get Close to That One, Sun Spot, Dinosaur, and Lucy.
They learn how to bake bread and, miraculously, they get it right on the first try? It's not too dry, it's completely baked, it tastes like bread...So they try it again. Andrew purposefully gives Neil a wrong measurement and only starts a flour-fight.
Neil sings while doing mundane things. Just random tunes he's heard on the radio while cleaning, making food, changing and showering. The only thing is, he's not very good at it. His voice is pitchy and it sounds more like he's yelling than singing. Andrew constantly complains about it, but Neil only grins and sings more if that's possible. Then, one night while Sir was recovering from being sick, Andrew got up in the middle of the night to hear Neil singing softly and petting her to calm her down. It turns out he's had actual talent the whole time.
When watching any show, Neil will comment on everything that happens. Andrew stays silent and actually watches, but he also remembers everything that Neil says, even if he isn't paying full attention to it at the time. So sometimes, when laying in bed about to fall asleep, he will suddenly remember that Neil said something like, "Parallel parking is technically not parallel because you park in a line with the other cars."
("Liquid is not by definition wet - " "Neil, shut the hell up - " "The ocean is a soup - " "Neil!")
They have a doomsday situation plan. Zombie apocalypse? They know what to do. Nuclear winter? Yep, all set. Sudden rise of an evil supervillain? Will never happen. AI takes over the world in a matrix situation? Uh, well...not quite yet. They can't agree yet.
Based on @superfluous-banality headcanon: They petsit Aaron and Katelyn's dogs when they went on their honeymoon. The dogs were brought to their apartment. The golden retriever wooed the cats immediately and they cuddled together. Neil alone was allowed to touch the chihuahua. It and Andrew spent the entire time glaring at each other until Aaron and Katelyn returned to pick them up. The twins decided to try to see if the chihuahua could tell them apart if they dressed up similarly. Long story short, it could.

The 5 times one of the Foxes saw Andrew smile, and the one time all of them saw him smile
Because I love the 5+1 format, and because I just want Andrew and Neil to be happy. (Also I’ve decided that of course they would get married, because that just makes sense).
My apologies for any mistakes, this was written all in one go this afternoon and I was too excited to wait before posting. I’m also trying to sign up for ao3 so I can post it there, I’ll update when that happens:)
Thanks for reading!
1.
The mood in the room was unusually somber before the Palmetto Foxes third game of the season. This was especially unusual because they weren’t expecting any sort of backlash, and the team that they were playing against was pretty tame. No one had any particular fear against the Terrapins and the two teams were mostly friendly.
Allison knew that the dark vibe was from the silence that came from the corner that Neil and Andrew sat in.
Besides the cat fights with the new Foxes, everyone on the team has been working well together this year. The upperclassmen and Andrews group had an unbreakable bond from the events of last year, although they all pretended that they couldn’t care less about the other group (except for Matt. He couldn’t pretend to not care if his life depended on it, the sweet puppy).
Neil’s silence was accompanied by a far away gaze and sickly pale skin. Allison had already pulled him aside in the dorms to lecture him about playing while sick, but he insisted that he was fine. Allison had let him go, assuming that Andrew would take care of him. Now she was wondering if she should have pushed harder, since he looked absolutely determined to play today.
Renee’s soft nudge distracted Allison from their almost dead looking striker and she gave her an understanding look.
“I’m sure he’ll take care of himself,” Renee says quietly. Allison squeezes her hand, grateful to have her to lean against. She still wasn’t sure how Renee managed to understand exactly what everyone was thinking with such accuracy.
“Okay people, we’ve gotten a strong start, let’s keep that up,” Wymack says gruffly, sending a concerned look toward Neil. “If any of you aren’t feeling up to it, tell me now so we can change the starting line-up.”
Everyone looks at Neil, who stares straight ahead like he hadn’t heard Coach. He turns his head to avoid Andrews dark look, then gets up stiffly.
“We done Coach? Dan and I would like to start drills soon,” Neil says. Allison snorts at his poor attempt at changing the subject, but Wymack just lets him go with a nod.
As they make their way over to the court Allison sees Wymach snag Andrew. “You’ll keep an eye on him?” she hears him say. She doesn’t hear Andrew answer, but she knows that he will.
They’re up, 4-2, by the time the first half is done. Allison had kept her eye on Neil every time she was off, but he had looked fine while playing. Abby wasn’t able to check in with him during half-time though, too busy dealing with Jack’s minor injury that he had gotten from getting checked into the plexiglass. Allison had to admit that she had very little sympathy for the kid.
Everything was going fine until almost the end of the next half. Allison hadn’t been paying much attention to the health of her team while she was playing, focused more on actually playing, but no one could ignore the loud slam that came from near the other teams goal.
Allison instinctively looked toward the noise to find out who was down.
The game was still going, but slumped against the wall across from her was Neil. Allison didn’t hesitate to run over to him, abandoning the goal for Andrew to look after.
One of the Terrapins backliners stood beside him, helmet off and looking sweetly concerned. He starts babbling as soon as Allison makes it over to them.
“I swear, it wasn’t that hard of a hit,” he says frantically. Allison understood the panic-it had less to do with Neil and more to do with what might happen to the poor kid when Andrew got here.
Allison ignores him and tugs Neils helmet off to reveal his deathly pale face. His eyes start fluttering as he wakes up, and he’s able to put his hand up to stop the game. Allison hears a smack behind her, but she ignores it.
“Neil, where are you hurt?” she says. It comes out irritated, but she knows that Neil will get that it’s out of concern.
“‘M fine,” he mumbles, trying and failing to get up. Allison shoves him down and looks around for Abby.
The poor kid who hit Neil is being held against the plexiglass by a furious Andrew, Nicky and Aaron standing beside him and trying to talk him out of any blatant violence. Abby has fighting her way through the players with a mixture of anger and worry.
“Drew?” Neil says, eyes closed and head leaning against the wall. There’s another smack and a few seconds later Andrew shoves Allison out of the way to sit beside him. Abby shows up a few minutes later, but Allison stays where she is to use her body to give them a bit of a barrier.
“You idiot,” Andrew growls. “Next time, get up after you get hit.”
Neil gives him a feverish smile. “I’m sorry I worried you. I’m f-, I’m okay.” He just barely catches himself and Andrew shakes his head in irritation. Allison grins, a little relieved that he’s feeling good enough to catch his words.
“Neil, do you know how high your fever is right now? You could kill yourself, playing like this. What were you thinking?” Abby lectures while she smooths back his hair. “Why didn’t you tell him to stop, Andrew?”
Neil grabs Andrews hand awkwardly, still wearing his armoured gloves. Andrew snorts. “You think I’m his keeper? He does what he wants. Junkie.”
Neil laughs weakly at that and lets Abby and Andrew support his weight as they get him up. Once he’s able to stand on his own two feet, the crowd lets out a supportive roar and Allison turns around to see Neil and Andrew. Andrew gives him a small, relieved smile, something that Allison never thought that she would see. No one had seen Andrew smile a single time since he’s been off of his meds. This smile is completely different. It softens his jaw, and even though it’s so small that it’s barely noticeable, Neil beams when he catches it.
She hears Andrew mutter a number under his breathe and they slowly walk off the court.
Allison could settle a few bets from this, but a part of her knows that she saw a private moment. Renee walks over to take over the goal and gives her a pleased smile, almost like she knew how selfless Allison was being by not telling anyone about this.
She grins back and relaxes, knowing that Neil is in good hands.
2.
Matt could cry, he was so happy to see his best friend after so many months apart. Dan squeezes his arm and lets him go give Neil a bear hug. All of them have graduated now, and Christmas is one of the only times that the original Foxes get to see each other, and even then it’s sometimes difficult to get everyone together.
This year everyone is gathered at Abby’s, and it feels just like old times. Aaron and Katelyn are already helping Abby and Wymack in the kitchen and Nicky is regaling everyone with stories from Germany, Erik adding details every once in a while but mostly just looking at his fiance with heart eyes.
Allison and Renee are coming later, and Kevin is watching an Exy match on TV. His mouth is open slightly as he watches the rematch like he’s never seen it before. Andrew sits beside him with a bored expression while he scrolls through his phone, but Matt notices him glance up at them a few times while he chats with Neil.
Neil had mentioned how difficult it’s been to be playing on different teams than Andrew, and Matt can see how happy he is now that everyone’s together. He thinks that Neil’s been getting lonely.
The kitchen is a hive of activity and they all talk over each other as they catch up on the past year. Dan and Matt show everyone their engagement rings, way too excited to wait to tell everyone like they had planned. Matt swears that Wymack tears up a bit when Dan asks him to walk her down the aisle, and Abby just about breaks his back with how tightly she hugs him.
Andrew even offers them a nod and agrees to fly out with Neil for the wedding, even though they aren’t sure when it will be yet.
There’s more exclaiming when Allison and Renee get there and Allison shouts at them for not waiting to announce it until they got there. They look tired but happy after travelling all day, and Renee gives him one of her pleased, proud smiles. At some point Betsy had gotten there as well, and Matt sees her having a long conversation with Andrew in the living room.
Matt can’t believe how far they’ve all come. After such ruined childhoods and terrible experiences in University, they all managed to build themselves lives. Build themselves a family.
Matt feels so incredibly fond of them all that it feels like his chest is going to split, like it can’t hold all of the affection for these people.
Dinner is as hectic and happy as the rest of the day was, and they sit at the dining table for hours talking. Kevin and Neil have an in-depth conversation about their teams and their performance so far this season, which Andrew mocks and then turns to talk with Renee.
Matt and Dan are talking over each other with the ease of people who are perfectly comfortable with each other as they tell Abby about their honeymoon plans, and Allison gives them tips. Or maybe they’re more like orders, but it’s all good ideas so they don’t mind.
It isn’t until after they’ve cleaned up the dishes and most of the Foxes have settled in the living room to rewatch some of their old matches that Matt gets the chance to talk with Neil on his own.
They skype as regularly as possible, and Neil calls him almost every week to get updates, but Matt has still missed him.
When he notices Neil sneak out to the porch, he follows behind.
“It’s hard to believe, but Kevin’s obsession hasn’t waned in the slightest,” Matt jokes as he plops down on the stairs beside Neil. The striker throws his head back to laugh and Matt revels in the warmth that comes with being able to make this once shy kid laugh his genuine, thrilled laugh.
“Andrew would say the same about me,” he says, eyes crinkling in amusement.
“He’s right. You’ve been playing well though, that goal in the last game where you hit it from half court was insane! I have the video saved to my phone so I can show people and tell them I know you,” Matt gushes, glad to finally be able to tell him how proud he is of him. Neil has a pleased blush on his cheeks.
“You still watch my games?”
“Of course I do! Dan and I’ve turned it into date night. We order pizza.”
Neils laughs again, more pleased than he would admit that Dan watches them too.
“How have you been Neil? For real?”
Neil fidgets with the bottom of his shirt. “It’s tough,” he finally admits. “Without Andrew. Our schedules are so different. There’s a chance that next year I might be able to switch though.”
Matt hums and bumps his shoulder against Neils. “I’m glad. I don’t want you to be lonely.”
Neil listens to Matt talk about Dan and what they’ve been up to for a while, and they sit in comfortable silence until Matt finally laughs. Neil gives him a questioning look.
“I have a ridiculous question for you that’s been plaguing me for years now.” Neil raises an eyebrow and waits for Matt to keep talking.
“So if you think that Andrews attractive, does that mean you think that about Aaron too?” Matts eyes are filled with mirth. He knows all too well the strained relationship that Neil and Aaron had through University, and also that they have just reached the point where they can talk about things other than Exy without killing each other.
Neil snorts, but then thinks through an answer much more seriously than Matt expected. “I’m not really attracted to people,” he says, then shakes his head and backtracks. “That’s not what I meant. Obviously I’m attracted to Andrew, and I think he’s beautiful, but it’s more because I know him so well and I trust him so much.”
Neil is blushing slightly at the admission and he looks to Matt to see if he understands what he means.
“It’s hard to explain. I never was attracted to anyone before Andrew. I can see objectively that some people are nice looking, but it doesn’t really affect me. But I really care about Andrew, and I can talk to him for hours and I know what foods he likes and he knows what I like. And the longer we know each other and the more I know him, the more beautiful he gets. Does that make sense?”
Neil frowns and waits for Matt. Matt can’t help the soft smile that curves his lips. “Neil Josten, you are the sweetest person on this goddamned team, you know that? Yeah, that makes sense.”
Matt hears the door close behind them and turns around to see Andrew standing there with his usual blank expression, but his red ears indicate that he heard what Neil said. Neil beams up at him and Matt gets up to leave. He turns around to look at the two before he goes inside and is shocked to see the softest smile gracing Andrews lips before his sits down beside Neil.
It’s no secret that most of the Foxes were worried about Neil choosing Andrew, of all people, to trust. But the longer they’re together, the more Matt realizes that Andrew is just as soft for Neil as Neil is for Andrew, he’s just better at hiding it.
Matt’s still grinning about that soft look hours later when him and Dan are getting ready to leave.
“You two are good for each other,” he says quietly to Neil before they leave, and Neil rewards him with a thrilled smile and a nod.
3.
Playing professionally makes a lot of things very difficult to hide. Something about the sport has made it a fan favourite, and the interesting lives of the players mean that the general public is completely fascinated with hearing about their lives outside of the sport.
As much as Kevin hates how intrusive everyone can be because of this, he has to admit that it makes it much easier for him to keep his eye on the old Foxes. Articles about Neil and Andrew are ridiculously easy to find online, and Kevin has made a habit of checking on them regularly.
He’s doing just that when he finds an article about Andrew getting noticed after his flight to New York. The journalist muses about why on earth he would be going to New York, a place that holds none of his family, only his long time rival, Striker Neil Josten.
What makes his trip even more interesting is the fact that the same long term rival picked him up from the airport.
What made Kevin look at this article with such interest was the picture that was attached to it. It’s obviously been taken with a good camera, since the photo is crisp and clear. In the center stands Neil and Andrew, standing only an inch apart. The crowd behind them is blurred out, making the photo look like a scene from a rom-com. Neil is beaming at Andrew and tugging his bag from him, eyes sparkling. What caught Kevins attention is the small quirk in Andrews lips, something that would be too small to call a smile on anyone but Andrew.
Kevin still has a protective streak for the two boys and wants them to have as easy of a life as possible, but he can’t deny the fact that they seem happier than they ever have been.
Kevin can’t remember the last time that he saw Andrew have a real smile that wasn’t violent or caused by medication.
He re-reads the article, then looks back up at the picture. Is this journalist stupid? He thinks. The whole article is about how Andrew must have come for something else, how their thrilled expressions must have been because they were mid-roast. Kevin can’t believe the journalist didn’t immediately realize that they were dating. He sighs and moves on to the next article, this one about Jeremy, but his mind keeps going back to the content smile on Andrews face. They’re going to be outed if they don’t stop making each other look so happy, he thinks. But he also thinks that maybe that’s not as bad of a thing as he’s made it out to be.
A few minutes later he goes back to the article and sends the link to Nicky without any explanation. He thought that might make Nicky happy.
4.
“I’m glad we still have the skype dates. I know Andrew and Neil are so busy right now,” Erik says, playing absentmindedly with Nicky’s hair as they wait for the boys to answer their skype call.
They’ve been having these weekly conversations with first Neil and Andrew, and later Aaron and Katelyn as well, for months. They had originally just called each other, but Nicky missed seeing his cousins more than he could say. He loves Germany, and he loves every single moment with Erik, but it’s still tough to have such a long distance relationship with his family. Especially after everything they’ve all gone through together.
It was harder to keep in contact with the other Foxes, but they all did their best to meet up for Christmas (everyone even came to Germany a few years ago. Nicky cried with joy, even though Andrew insisted it was just because everyone wanted to see Europe), plus he often got texts from Matt and Renee. And every once in a while he gets an Exy article from Kevin.
Nicky hummed in agreement and watched the screen with anticipation. They had missed last weeks skype call because Neil and Andrew were finally moving in together after signing for the same team in the fall. Nicky has been vibrating with excitement to see the apartment, and Erik has been waiting to ask for tips about taking care of a cat from Neil.
When the screen finally pops up, it’s obvious that Neil and Andrew haven’t noticed it yet. Neil is laughing about something, one of his rare laughs that is unforced and filled with true joy. And Andrew, Nicky’s beloved, terrifying cousin is beaming. It’s the biggest smile he’s seen on his cousins face for years, and it’s the first time he’s ever seen him smile with such true happiness. Nicky could cry, and when he turns to look at Erik, he can see that his eyes are shining as well.
Erik clears his throat and Andrew schools his expression as he turns to the screen. Neil is still looking at Andrew with pure love, but he waves to the screen.
A flash of silver derails Nicky’s thoughts even further.
“Neil. Neil, what is on your hand?” He asks, delight evident in his voice. Neil smirks and holds up the other hand, which has nothing on it. Andrews lips quirk.
“No, your other hand. Is that a ring?!” Nicky is almost bouncing, waiting for Neil to stop teasing him and show him the simple silver band that sits, unassuming, on his finger.
Neil shows him his other hand without hesitating, and Nicky realizes that they’ve already talked about telling him. It makes his heart grow bigger than it already is.
“Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh, are you guys engaged? When did that happen?” Nicky practically shrieks while Erik gives them a heartfelt congratulations.
Andrew’s expression is as bored as ever, but Nicky doesn’t miss the fact that they’re holding hands under the laptop.
“A few days ago,” Andrew says nonchalantly. The tips of his ears are pink though, and Neil can’t hold in the grin.
“Hows Germany?” Neil asks politely, and Erik laughs.
“There’s no way Nicky will let you change the subject that quickly,” Erik says, and Nicky nods effusively.
“How did this happen? I need the entire story Andrew! Or Neil, whoever will actually give me the details. Who asked who? Did you cry?”
Neil laughs again. “We asked each other. We had a long conversation about it.”
Nicky wishes that he could tease them for that and call them boring, but he knows what a huge deal this is for his cousin. He’s thrilled that Neil understands that as well.
“You guys are so good for each other,” Nicky says, sniffling a bit. Andrew rolls his eyes.
“I’m hanging up now,” he says.
“No! I need to hear what you’re doing for your wedding! Maybe I can help you plan it. And Allison can too! It’s gonna be so amazing.”
Neil laughs as Andrew reaches his hand out in slow motion to close the computer. Neil’s voice reaches them as the camera goes down.
“We’re going to have a party, we’ll figure out a time you guys can come out, okay?”
Erik confirms that because Nicky is too emotional over the fact that they’re planning the time around him.
He leans his head against Erik’s shoulder and Erik smiles.
“I guess we’ll have to wait until next week for an apartment tour,” he says, and Nicky can hear the smile in his words.
“I never thought that he would be happy. Isn’t that sad? I wasn’t even sure if Andrew would be talking to me for this long. Then this scrappy puppy comes along and puts us all in danger and makes us all love him, and here we are. No one ever would have guessed this in a million years.” Nicky says thoughtfully.
That night, Nicky falls asleep with the picture of a truly happy Andrew in his mind.
5.
As much as he tries to convince his old Foxes that he’s a grouchy old man who doesn’t care, Wymack spends a lot of time checking up on his kids.
He’s been to as many of Kevin’s games as he can possible fit in whenever they’re close enough and he doesn’t have a game on, he video calls Nicky as often as he can (keeping weird hours makes this easier, and Nicky and Abby both lecture him regularly about getting enough sleep), and Dan and Matt live close enough that they have dinner together regularly. Renee and Allison move around too often to make it easy to see them, but everyone ends up together at least once a year. They avoid doing it on Thanksgiving (Andrew and Neil prefer to keep that one quiet, and no one argues with that). Aaron and Katelyn have even come out to see them a few times when their schedules weren’t as hectic with the hospital.
The hardest ones to get to see are Andrew and Neil. They spent a few years doing long distance with both playing on different teams, so every time they had time off they spent it together. Wymack wishes that he could have lived closer to Neil, he knows that those years were particularly difficult on him.
Now that they are living together and on the same team, it’s been easier for them to get in contact with everyone, but they’re still moving around too often for it to be easy to visit.
Last year they detoured to stay with Abby and Wymack for a few days during their annual summer road trip, and having Bee there meant that Andrew has come out a few extra times to stay when Neil was busy with press.
Wymack tries very hard to convince them that he couldn’t care less about how often they come out to visit him, but they all know that he misses them terribly.
To keep a closer eye on them, Wymack and Abby recorded all of their games, and Wymack secretly watches youtube videos with names like ‘Neil Josten’s Best 10 Roasts’ and ‘10 Minutes of the Josten Minyard Rivalry’. He does not miss dealing with the press after Neil’s been let loose, but he feels a bit of pride every time he rips into a deserving journalist after being asked about his scars. If Wymack could kick everyone’s ass who hurt his kids, he would. Since he can’t, watching them get demolished by a tiny redhead has to do.
For the first time in a few weeks, Abby and Wymack are finally watching a game live. It’s always a lot more stressful watching them live, but they make up for that by ordering Chinese and making an evening of it.
They barely talk through the game other than to insult the other team or praise a good save or goal. The second half as just started when an aggressive striker doesn’t stop at the goal lines. The entire court goes silent and Wymack watches with barely controlled terror as Neil sprints across the court just in time for Andrew to hit the wall. Neil shoves the striker away with more venom than Wymack has seen from him since Riko and turns his attention to the goalie currently lying on the ground.
“Come on Andrew, get up,” Wymack whispers as he watches Neil fling his helmet off and protect his prone form while the medical staff make their way over. The sports announcers are frantic as they explain what just happened and Abby groans in irritation as they show a slow motion recap of Andrew getting hit, then of Neil protecting him.
Wymack clutches his phone and enters the number of their coach before he’s even thought it through. He knows it isn’t likely that he’ll answer, but he’s disappointed when it goes to voicemail anyway. Beside him Abby is calling Neil.
It takes almost 30 long minutes before Abby gets through to Neil, and she immediately puts it on speaker phone so that they can both speak to him.
“Neil, is everything okay?” Abby says, concern leaking through her words.
“I’m… I’m not sure yet. I’m at the hospital? And I’m waiting for the doctor,” Neil sounds shocked, voice dull.
“Which hospital are you at? We’re flying there as soon as we can,” Wymack says, and Abby nods, grabbing his phone to book tickets.
“Umm, I’m not sure. One minute,” they can hear mumbling while Neil asks someone where they are and Wymacks heart aches for the poor kid.
“Okay, we’re just at the New York Hospital.”
“I booked our tickets, we’re leaving in an hour okay?” Abby says as soothingly as she can. “We’ll call you when we get there.” Wymack says in lieu of a goodbye.
By the time they make it to New York they each have a few messages from Neil saying that Andrew’s going to be fine, he has a concussion and they’re keeping him for observation, but he’s okay. The relief is palpable after the tension through the flight, and Wymack is glad that Neil thought to tell them.
It’s early in the morning when they get there, so they sleep at a hotel for a few hours while waiting for visiting hours.
It’s far more complicated to get into the room than Wymack thought that it would be. They have to convince the staff that they aren’t journalists or well meaning fans before they’re brought up to the room, and Abby has to show them family photos from Christmas with Neil and Andrew before the nurses decide that they are allowed to see Andrew.
Wymack’s glad for the security but he curses at all the journalists for making it so difficult. They crowd them when they realize who they are visiting, and it takes a security guard and a lot of glaring to part the crowd so they can follow the nurse.
“Can you confirm the Josten Minyard relationship?” One journalist shouts as they walk past.
“Coach Wymack! Coach Wymack, is it true that Minyard’s injury is far worse than they are letting on? And what do you think that means for the team?” another journalist shouts, microphone shoved unceremoniously in his face. Abby pulls him behind her and gives him a warning look not to say anything.
The hallway where Andrews room is located is blissfully calm after the storm downstairs. The nurse indicates which room he’s in, then moves on.
Abby pauses in the doorway and motions for Wymack to step beside her, a look of contentment on her face.
In the room Neil is perched on the bed beside Andrew. He’s a bit pale but there are no visible cuts or bruises and he looks mostly alert. They’re hands are twined together, the silver engagement bands catching the light.
Neil is saying something in a low tone and Andrew squeezes his hand. His mouth tilts up at the corners and looks at Neil with something close to adoration. Wymack tugs Abby away from the door and takes a few steps back to give them their privacy. He texts Neil to tell him that they’ve made it in, and a few minutes later Neil peeks out the door to great them.
He looks exhausted, hair mussed and dark circles under his eyes, but his face brightens when he sees them.
Abby gives him a tight hug before going to sit in the chair beside Andrew who has his usual bored expression. Wymack stops beside Neil and squeezes his shoulder.
“I’m proud of you, kid,” he says, feeling a little choked up. Neil looks up in surprise.
“For what? I didn’t do anything.”
Wymack grins and pats his shoulder before going in to greet Andrew.
“Next time, get back up after you get hit,” he says gruffly to the tiny blond. Andrew raises a brow.
“Did I worry you, old man? You’re getting soft with age.”
Wymack grunts and sits down in the other chair near the foot of the bed. “Not worried, just annoyed. Kevin’s called me 3 times since I got up this morning to make sure you can still play.”
“He’ll be back in a few weeks,” Neil says while he takes back his post at Andrews side. Andrew rolls his eyes and mutters ‘junkie’ under his breath.
Wymack wishes he could be irritated at the long night and unnecessary panic, but he feels so content being in the same place as his kids that his gruffness is softened.
+1
Neil surveys the apartment from his spot in the kitchen. They’re 1 bedroom apartment is not nearly big enough to comfortably fit everyone in, but no one is complaining about the small space. Even Andrew isn’t feeling claustrophobic yet (Neil keeps checking on him, but he seems happy chatting with Aaron and Kevin on the sofa). True to promise, they did throw a wedding party at their apartment, and they made sure that it was at a time that Nicky and Erik could come out to see them.
However, it took multiple arguments to convince Allison and Nicky that they didn’t need anyone to plan it and that they were just going to get married at the courthouse. Neil’s pretty sure that it was more Renee and Erik than his arguments who made them let it go. No matter what, Neil couldn’t be happier with how everything has turned out.
King winds himself around his ankles, meowing indignantly about the noise in the place and Neil smiles fondly at her.
Matt and Dan are swaying to the music near the balcony door, lost in their own little world. Beside them sway Renee and Allison, and Renee catches Neils eye to smile proudly at him. After Nicky, her and Allison were the next ones they told about the engagement. Andrew had mentioned that it was Renee who convinced him that marriage wasn’t always a bad idea, and Neil couldn’t help but feel a bit grateful for that.
Beside him stood Abby, Wymack, and Bee. Bee has been around long enough that Neil is able to accept her, and he’s glad that Andrew was able to find someone that he trusted so much. Neil has also been going to a therapist, but something about knowing Bee while he was going through everything made it too uncomfortable for him to talk to her. He found someone in New York instead, and Bee seemed so thrilled that he’s managed to open up to someone other than Andrew that Neil almost liked her a little bit. It’s tough to find someone who is genuinely happy about your healing.
Katelyn is laughing with Thea about something, and Erik and Nicky are in the corner cooing over Sir, who is soaking up the attention.
Neil can’t help but think about all of the trials and tribulations it took to get to this point - the time in the Ravens Nest, the terror of Baltimore, all of the panic attacks and rough nights and foggy days. Neil never thought that he would live through his first year of University so every year after that has felt both like a gift and borrowed time. It took until the past year for Neil to wrap his head around the idea that he might be able to live until old age.
That thought was both a relief and terrifying, just because he wants it so badly. Andrew has helped him pull through multiple panic attacks just thinking about it.
Neil knows that there will be other challenges ahead of them (even though they really deserve a happy 20 years to make up for the bad ones), but he thinks that they’ll be much easier than the crap that’s gone on before this.
He catches Andrews eye across the room. They’re both wearing the suits they got for the occasion and Neils eyes have been tracking Andrew all night. He’s noticed that Andrews have done the same thing for him.
Aaron realizes that Andrews attention has strayed and he turns his conversation to Kevin. Neil and Aaron’s relationship isn’t exactly great, but they’ve managed to get to the point where they can go for coffee without hating each other by the time they get home. Neil knows that Andrew appreciates the effort both of them make, even though he’s never said anything about it.
Neil watches as Andrew gets up and makes his way through their friends, no, their family to get to him.
He watches the crowd impassively beside Neil while Neil watches the small twitch at his lips and the fond look in his eyes.
“Staring.”
Neil grins. “I guess you’ll have to do something about that, won’t you?”
Andrew’s jaw tightens where he tries not to smile. Neil feels the glow of accomplishment. My husband thinks I’m funny. He tries to keep his expression calm, but he can see from Andrews pink ears that he’s watching him with as much love as he feels.
Abruptly Andrew holds out a hand. “Yes or no.”
Neil isn’t quite sure what he’s asking, but he puts his hand in Andrews without hesitation. “Of course.”
Andrew leads him over to a quiet spot near the hallway and places Neils hands on his shoulder. He grabs his waist and starts to sway to the music.
“Don’t look at me like that.”
“Like what? Like I love you? Because I do,” Andrews ears go red and Neil smirks, feeling very proud of himself for making Andrew blush.
“You’re a pest,” Andrew says.
“Yeah, but I’m your pest.”
And Andrew laughs. Neil almost trips in surprise. He can feel the eyes of the rest of the party on them, but he can’t tear his eyes off of Andrews smile.
“Yes or no,” Neil says.
Andrew’s still smiling. “Yes, Junkie.”
Neil kisses Andrews forehead, not wanting to get rid of that beautiful, perfect smile. There’s a flash and Neil turns around to see Nicky holding a camera.
“This is going on the wall! I’m framing it,” he announces, and Andrews glare holds barely any heat.
A few weeks later, when the package from Germany comes, Neil can see how pleased Andrew is with the photo. It sits in a simple silver frame, and they hang it above the sofa.
Neil feels very much like he lives a charmed life.

I'm bisexual katelyn would whisper to herself . she liked the thrill the word gave her. it felt right it felt good.
nobody knew.
 not really
not yet
.Except her family.  -who didnt really take it seriously .
She practised saying it into her mirror.
I'm bisexual. I'm bisexual. I'm bisexual
She reviewed it over  and over in her mind.  was this really true? She wouldn't say it with such confiedence if it wasn't true right? Right? It would feel wrong otherwise wouldnt it?
It didn't feel wrong to her. it felt like it fitted her exactly.
She had tried to explain her crushes on girls and been told in very stiff voice that maybe you just admire her  .You just enjoy her company.  like she didnt what a crush was.
these days  there are too many options. people get confused
Please.  you are lesbian or you are not  . everything else is fake .
there is no bisexual
but kate she knew there was.
Her sister was having a baby. Her parents were now looking to her  wondering when would she  too  would meet a nice man and give them  more grand kids.
Aaron was not what her parent’s idea of what was a nice man but he was a man and that would do.
Better than her last partner
Lucy
Did you have to make such a fool of yourself
she loved aaron and she knew he loved her but she wanted him to love all of her. to not have to hide any part of herself ,to not be ashamed. she was going to tell him but her heart worried over his reaction as much as  over the fact she hadnt told him yet.
“Aaron ,I need to tell you something "
aaron noticed her nervous  look and he felt afraid  "is it about my brother? Did Andrew bother you again did ? he hurt you?
"no, it's not about Andrew. It's about me. and you. me and you.”
aaron sighed almost resigned "you want to break up. “ he said gloomily
“I dont want that. “ she said “ do you? “
he grew wide eyed. “ never! “
“never? nothing would change that ?” she pressed him
Aaron looked at her strangely “ Are you pregnant?”
" No . thats not it.  “ she think about how it explain “Its.. actually  -Andrew...
“ I knew it “ aaron says with a mixture of triumph and mortification  “ what has he done this time?”
“He hasnt done  anything ...recently . just..You know he's gay..”
Aaron sighed "I did know that unfortunately”
"unfortunately?” she asked
aaron scoffed "well they're not exactly subtle. Disgusting”
"disgusting?” panic rose within katelyn
aaron winced " I just meant.. He's my brother  you know .that's all. “
"except that isn't what you meant, is it”
"Its not like that. I don't mind .it's just don't need to know about it"
" you don't want to you mean ”
"why would you defend him anyway?. He wouldn't do the same for you.” Aaron exclaimed
"he wouldnt.” katelyn agreed
“ He doesn't like you. In any way. He doesn't like any woman in any way.”
"I know that.  “ she swallowed “But I do.” she blurts out
Aaron nodded like he understood ." you want him to be nicer  -but it's not just you- Andrew has problems with - we both do . We working on it with a new therapist..”
katelyn groaned under her breath .she would just have to spell it out “ Aaron I like girls”
"you like.. Girls”
"yes."
"so you do want to break up with me”
"no darling no. i told i dont want that  I love you Aaron."
“im not a girl” he said gesturing to himself
“ im attracted to girls ,In the past I've dated girls. right now I'm dating you. because i love you .  I'm bisexual”  she waited for a reaction .  “you understand?”
aaron said nothing
"is that okay?” she whispered fear welling up
Aaron stayed quiet and a crease appeared in his forward
"Aaron  say something..im still  the same person . im still me .”
aaron states past her "I have to tell you something too.  “ he murmured
she sat down worried about what he might say next.
“ I told you . about andrew . he hates anyone i date . “ katelyn nodded along wondering where this was going “Andrew would always  scare them off before we got too close. My past relationships that is. My exs .” aaron  looked around to make sure nobody else could hear and said in very quiet whisper against her ear “ The thing is  though ,my exs, not all of them were women "

Neil Josten's Playlist Part 5 - Nicky, Aaron, and Kevin
Masterpost and link to the playlist in its entirety here
Not as much to say about these three here - they each kind of speak for themselves I think.
Nicky
18. Relief - Chris Garneau
Of all the foxes, Nicky shows Neil more music than anyone else. Typically, though, it’s music Neil isn’t super into. Nicky knows Neil isn’t into most of the stuff he shows him, but Neil will still sit and listen to it with him if he is asked and isn’t busy, so Nicky keeps doing it anyway. I can imagine Chris Garneau being one of Nicky’s favorite artists, but one he keeps close to his heart. Several of his songs just hit me like they’re talking about the trauma and just general impact of growing up queer and topics like that, and I feel like it’s stuff that would really hit Nicky.
So Nicky listens to Chris Garneau (though he never was able to listen to Halloween the same again after what happened with Drake), but he doesn’t show Neil any of the songs intentionally. But one day Neil gets out of a class early and walks in on Nicky playing this one. He opens up to Neil about how much this music means to him, and Neil decides he likes the song. He keeps it.
33. Rocket Man - Elton John
Nicky loves Elton John. It's one of the artists he usually blasts on Sunday mornings in Columbia when they're all fighting hangovers. One morning he played this one and even got Aaron and Kevin singing along a bit (they were both still a bit drunk). Neil thinks back on that day and remembers it as a good one. Andrew looks back and remembers it as one of the more annoying ones.
60. Your Song - Elton John
Neil caught Nicky quietly singing this to Erik over video chat one morning in Columbia. For as boisterous and unapologetic as Nicky is (and for as much as he's always trying to get Neil and Andrew to act more like a "normal" couple with PDA and shit) it was a very vulnerable and private moment that Neil was a bit surprised by. He didn't walk in or make himself known, but he added the song to his playlist (and sometimes plays it on the car ride back from Columbia weekends for Nicky when he knows he's missing Erik).
Aaron
43. Up the Wolves - The Mountain Goats
Aaron has a lot of anger for someone who is only 5 feet tall. Neil may find him obnoxious as hell, and may deeply resent the way he holds that anger against Andrew. But I personally feel that an intrinsic and necessary step in repairing Aaron and Andrew's relationship comes with some sort of acknowledgement from Andrew that - regardless of what Tilda deserved, and regardless of what series of events unfolded upon her death - he hurt Aaron with what he did. He made a decision that Aaron did not ask him to make, nor did he want him to do it. And Aaron has every right to hold it against him. He doesn't need to regret doing it, but he needs to understand that doing it hurt Aaron deeply. I think it takes a long time for Andrew to reach this point, and when he does I don't think Neil really gets it at first.
However, I think once Neil has accepted and understood it as much as he can (he still struggles with his own mommy issues, okay?) he begins to understand Aaron much more. This song is a bit of an enigma in a lot of ways; I've never met someone who really fully gets what it's about exactly. Even the artists themselves have vague and changeable understandings of where it came from. But the clear theme of the song is anger and resentment, and carrying forward with those feelings. Maybe you'll let them go, maybe you'll act on them. Maybe you'll just keep feeling them for a while. Who knows when the hurt will go away? You're justified in your anger, but it doesn't make it any nicer to feel. Neil doesn't fully understand Aaron, but he starts to understand how he feels, at least.
62. Such Great Heights - The Postal Service
Listen. Neil doesn't willingly think of Aaron when he hears this song. It's a very nice song and he won't let that bastard ruin it for him.
Did he have a phase where he listened to it a lot to try and get himself to not associate it with Aaron? Absolutely. Did it work? Absolutely not.
In all seriousness, there are only a few songs that make Neil think of Aaron and this is one of them SOLELY because Aaron drunkenly mentioned it was his and Katelyn's song when it came on the radio one time. Something about hearing that and then listening to the sound felt very real and human to Neil. It helps remind him that Aaron does have feelings, actually, and does have it in him to care about other people. These are good things to keep in mind when he's trying really hard not to punch Aaron in the face for Andrew's sake.
Also it has a really nice sound. So he has begrudgingly added it to his playlist and he listens to it spitefully.
64. Wake Me Up - Avicii
Neil wouldn't believe Aaron listened to music this carefree and positive if he didn't witness it himself. He learns a bit more about Aaron every day they interact (against his will of course) and this is another song that helps him understand Aaron a bit better.
He has dreams and goals and he really wants to be happy. He wants to enjoy life. And it's really fucking hard to do that for anyone in their group. Neil seeing Aaron actually hold some amount of passion or desire for something better gives him a better view of the guy. Neil guesses everyone must need some amount of optimism once in a while.
Kevin
4. Amsterdam - Guster
So obviously Neil has never been through a breakup (well I actually hc that he and Andrew almost broke up after Andrew graduated, but they pulled their asses together and that’s a post for another time). But the thing is that Kevin absolutely has! And we all know how Kevin wallows when he’s upset. And Kevin Day is a Guster fan. You cannot take that away from me. So Kevin goes through a breakup and is blasting Guster in the dorm like no one else lives there.
Now Neil is pretty observant and analytical. I mean he had to be for years, so it’s kind of just in his nature now. Most breakup songs he hears are louder and angrier and predictable to him. Not in a bad way, but he expects that they’ll pretty much usually be either angry or sad in style, neither of which he tends to be very fond of. So he heard this one and it’s more upbeat tune without being overly loud or aggressive and I think that really intrigued him. It gets stuck in your head, but it’s the kind of breakup song that - even if you are going through a breakup - leaves you just feeling pretty good! Even if it is in a bitter way. So Neil’s brain just sort of latched onto this one and kept it close. It helps that it reminds him of Kevin in a way that is so intrinsically HUMAN. He can try to be an exy player before a person all he wants, but even Kevin experiences heartbreak and frustration. He's a whole person, too - just like Neil.
40. Still - Ben Folds
Yes, Nicky and Matt made him watch Over the Hedge. Yes, that is where he found this song. Yes, it still kind of makes him think about the sad turtle. Don't tell anyone.
Seriously, though, Neil latched onto this song initially for the smooth, sad sound. Then he listened to the lyrics. It really hits him once he's captain and he suddenly has all these added responsibilities piled onto him. He now has to appear respectable and put-together, and he doesn't have room for mistakes. It doesn't help that Kevin is reminding him of their deal with the Moriyamas at literally every turn, as if Neil doesn't KNOW the stakes and the pressure on him at any given moment.
But, oh, Kevin. Neil can roll with his punches with ease because, really now. Kevin is more terrified than he ever lets on anymore. "No room for weakness", but he hits himself with that reminder before taking it to Neil. He's stubborn and frustrating, and he can be downright cruel and unreasonable. But he's hurting himself with his scathing remarks long before they leave his lips to attack anyone else. Neil thinks about this, and he doesn't have it in him to be quite as angry anymore. He sees Kevin, and he know Kevin sees him too. He just doesn't know how else to provide support, and he isn't really in a good spot to be supporting anyone else at the moment anyway. Neil can only hope that, with time, Kevin can let himself feel safe the way Neil is learning to.
56. Dance Monkey - Tones and I
Neil heard this song and applied it immediately to Kevin. He's seen first hand now how much work it is for Kevin to maintain his image and career the way he does while balancing all the baggage that comes with it. The people in the audience who root for him the strongest are the same ones who rooted for Riko and the Ravens a while back. They're the same ones who thought he lost a brother the day his abuser died, who thought joining the foxes would be a huge gut punch to his career.
There's a lot that's expected of Kevin, and there's a lot of trauma he carries that people seem to think are memories he looks back on fondly. And that's a facade he has to keep up.
Neil sees this and he knows how hard it is for Kevin. He knows.

Story 2 (Feb. 24)
Today’s story is brought to you by a phone call about the ACT and college. The call making me want to just hang up at the audacity and judgement from my family. :D
Summary- my cousin thinks you can either be successful... or fall in love.
“The (Overrated) Norms and Expectations”
I hear my phone buzzing on the counter. I pick it up and see it’s my cousin calling. I sigh, knowing I’m in for the usual complaint dump and rant. I answer anyway with a cheery voice.
“Hey Katelyn!”
“Oh my word. I have so much tea to tell you…”
As she rants I look through my Instagram feed, barely bothering to listen to her whine about how her friend- the toxic one that never seems to do the right thing ever- is lying to her about her boyfriend. I don’t even try to butt in with my opinion, since I know it will only be shut down within seconds. Don’t you just love people like that? They make you feel stupid for literally doing or saying anything. It’s like you cannot disagree with them for fear of being ridiculed. Or maybe I'm the only one that deals with this. I mean, I am the most non-confrontational person I know.
The conversation finally switches to my day. I tell her about how I took the ACT.
“How was it? I need to know so I can prepare accordingly.”
“Well it wasn’t horrible, I just ran out of time for most of the sections.”
“Oh yeah,” I hear my aunt say, “That’s exactly what happened to Eliza when she didn’t study.” Even though her voice is barely audible over the phone, I can hear the disdain in her tone. Just like with her daughter, I always watch what I say in case I end up exposing something they can ridicule in my life.
“I want to get at least a 30 and then improve on that if I can.”
I roll my eyes. Maybe I’m just as quick to judge as she is, but I have never understood how someone could be that extra. Taking the ACT more than once just to get the perfect score just seems so pointless to me. But then again, I'm not the one wanting to go to college for the next six years.
“Yeah I’m just hoping for an average score. I mean, it doesn’t really matter since I don’t even know if I’m going to college anyway.” As soon as the words leave my mouth, I know it’s a mistake to bring up.
“Yeah. You’re just gonna stay home and have babies,” my aunt says. I awkwardly laugh, more annoyed than I would let on.
“Did you hear that?” Kaitlyn laughs too, and I know she thinks the idea of simply having kids is dumb. She has said so before. She wants to be better than that typical girl who- and I quote- “Could have done so well but instead fell in love.”
Can I just start ranting on this? I mean, this really is an issue. People look down at stay at home moms. Maybe you don’t think so, or don’t think it happens, but the way moms are viewed, in my experience at least, is not one of high esteem. It’s like my cousin so eloquently put: we could do so well but instead fell in love, got married, and had kids. You can’t do that and be a successful woman apparently. It’s as though staying home and raising a human being- or many- isn’t seen as an important part of life but merely a chore or backup plan.
I’m sick of hearing trash from people. I’m tired of people thinking that if I don’t go to college I’m going to be a nobody. That if I have kids that makes me a dependent woman that is worth as much as her husband. Why does it have to be this way? Maybe it’s not like this for most people, but that’s how it feels for me. And I don’t want to go to college because it’s just what we do as teens graduating school. Why can’t I have some time to figure out my life?
And why does me having interest in a guy at the age of seventeen mean that I’m going to end up getting married to him and have nothing accomplished in my life? Why does marriage have to be the end of my dreams? Why can’t we go on a journey together and both work? What if I want to get a job that doesn’t require a degree but still have a husband? Is that an issue? Is that unheard of? Sure seems like it. But even if I do end up getting married young and having kids and raising them- you know, like you’re supposed to do as a parent- does that mean my life is in any way less-lived than say, Katelyn, who goes and gets a degree and becomes a doctor and then gets married? Why can’t they both be seen as good options?
I say as much to my ever faithful friend Alissa. And finally I found someone other than my mom who agrees with me.
“I’m not going to college either. And Liam wants to have a job. But so do I,” she adds. “And that’s not an issue. I can have a career and still want kids later.”
“Thank you,” I practically yell at her through the phone. I really wish she lived closer, because she would keep my friends and family in line. For now, she just helps me out through the endless facetime calls we have.
“Do not listen to them Maiz. You can do whatever. It doesn’t matter if they think it’s stupid.”
“You’re right.”
And she is. It doesn't matter what my aunt- or anyone- thinks about my plans for my near future. It is my life after all. And if I want to spend it raising kids-or working at a job I actually like, or literally anything- that’s okay.
And the same goes for you- don’t let the world’s norms take away from your dreams. They might tell you you dream too small- that you could do so much better. But their “better” might be your “sucky normal life.” No two people have the same exact life plan. And they shouldn’t. That's the great thing of living your own life- it’s yours. And you shouldn’t spend it living up to other people’s expectations.
