anyone's got aftg fic recs?

brainrot is hitting hard. i reread too many times already and im desesperate for content. if i can, without smut or not smut centric would be awesome, here are some of my own recs as i know im not the only one in this situation (a lot of relationships, both rom and gen, different lenghts and completation status, we dont discriminate here, tho you can see my obvius preference for some characters)

Andrew’s chest is tight with a pressure he cannot name. It began when he got the call, but the choke on his lungs only escalated when he found Neil on the curb. Again, squeeze, upon finding Neil still slumped in the back seat of the rental car. Again, crush, each time he looked in the rear-view to see Neil following him home.

Now Neil is on the roof, hair whipping in the wind and saying he’s nothing. Andrew knows how it feels to fade from the page, but Neil’s words live in contradiction to his suffocating presence.

Andrew thinks, you are like me. And also, you could not be more different.

He is not thoughtless when he puts out his cigarette, says “no one asked you,” takes Neil’s confused face in his hands, and kisses him.

It’s a spark that ignites the pressure in Andrew’s chest, starting a fire that feels like relief, but also like rage. Neil’s hand clasps gently at Andrew’s sleeve, and now it is definitely rage, but turned in on himself — on an impulse Andrew could have stifled, on a choice he should have given. Neil speaks with ice water, so Andrew lights cigarettes in search of a new burn strong enough to cauterize the old wounds ripping open in his now-hollow core.

Neil’s feet are planted solidly to the ground by the time Andrew tells him to go. He thinks, well, that’s one problem solved, and stays on the roof until he finally stops bleeding.

"No, not a dirty one. I didn't even taste the regular one." Neil continues to stir a bit worried by the color the drink had turned after all the grenadine. "Just, my mom ordered me one I guess. After like an hour the bartender put one down in front of me."

"And you didn't drink it?"

"Absolutely not, I thought it was either drugged or a test. Some random guy put a drink in front of me." Neil takes a tentative sip.

So I was skimming through the aftg series (again) and I caught myself thinking that I don't see the feud between Neil and Aaron?? Like— there's no obvious hatred between them??? Sure thing, Aaron's pissed that Neil uses Katelyn against him — and who wouldn't be? But he is pleased with Neil’s reaction to his words about Neil using his brother as an easy fuck after learning about Drake — that's not him hating Neil, that's him checking if Neil's safe for Andrew. And after he's made sure, he no longer cares about a certain redhead slash his brother's love interest.

Neil, on the other hand, couldn't care less about Aaron from the beginning. He says so himself.

I think the point of this little take is that I just don't get why so many fanfics picture either Aaron (if talking from Neil's perspective) or Neil (if it's Aaron's POV) as bitches....

Once again, I was just skimming through the books in order to check some things to make my own fanfiction more accurate, so I might have not noticed some details, but I think the whole hatred thing is a bit exaggerated

Tbh I've never understood when fic writers talk about things happening in their stories that they didn't plan. Like, a scene or interaction going completely differently than they originally planned, and they don't know how it happened. In my mind, I've always been like, "But you wrote the scene? How could you write something that you didn't intend to write? How does a character that you're making up take over a scene and say/do things you didn't plan? You're literally the one typing."

I've just never understood it. But then this happened:

I never made the conscious choice for Aaron to hate pineapples with such a passion. It's like his spirit invaded my body and made his hatred known, and when I reread it after, I was legitimately confused because this wasn't the plan? Like, where did this come from?

Anyway, I understand now. I understand.

Andrew had shit to do this afternoon, but for the past hour, he’s been trapped in a beanbag chair by Neil’s sleeping body weight. He doesn’t even have the remote in reaching distance, so he can’t change the channel away from ESPN.

Neil — whose legs are across Andrew’s lap — is going to be so mad when Andrew fails his sociology paper and gets kicked off the team because their captain couldn’t locate his own mattress.

Whatever. Neil’s head is on his shoulder, so Andrew amuses himself by wrapping a particularly ringlet-y curl of Neil’s around his finger and stretching it, letting it spring back into place again and again. Neil’s arm is draped loosely over Andrew’s middle, so Andrew keeps two fingers pressed to his wrist, lulled into patience by the steady beat of Neil’s pulse.

Suddenly, Neil twitches. A short, startled whine punches out of parted lips, muffled against Andrew’s collarbone.

“Neil,” Andrew says firmly, and Neil curls in toward the sound of his voice, fingers gripping at the fabric of Andrew’s shirt.

“Baby gator bit my ankle,” Neil mumbles.

Andrew, who had been steeling himself for the resurgence of a gory memory or a dream-induced panic attack, finds himself huffing in amusement.

“No, it didn’t,” Andrew says.

The tension bleeds out of Neil immediately.

“Oh,” he says, and then his breathing evens out once again.

When Andrew looks up, Kevin’s imperious face is on the screen — ESPN has decided to torture Andrew with a segment on the National Exy League’s star rookie. Andrew sighs, rests his cheek on the top of Neil’s head, and resigns himself to the reality of the moment.

a list of the best aftg fics i’ve read so far:

- “dead of night” by niknak22 (a character study of kevin day, with kerejean hints and so, so much angst. kevin is a really interesting character and i love what niknak22 did with him)

- “say something” by willowbird (genuinely that whole series is awesome. andrew pov of neil struggling with trauma, going non-verbal and injuries, angsty but mostly wholesome.)

- “i wanna see you (be brave)” by arkastadt (matt’s pov of andreil developing… so beautiful. also, has loads of funny moments with the upperclassmen & shows their friendship)

- “odd eye” by tdashshirts (best andrew character study ever. it’s amazing and has inspired me to try and write more on andrew for myself)

Andrew through the years rarely does press if he can help it. With the occasional interview or mandatory photoshoots not much is known about the pro goalie. So because of the mystery surrounding his life fans love making up stories and narratives based off of little tidbits of information they get.

Andrew is seen with animal hair on his arm band? Fans say he has a pet tiger that he raised from birth to guard his house

A tattoo is seen poking out from under his wrist guards? It’s a bad ass portrait of him killing Kevin Day is a fist fight.

Andrews true fans know they are all jokes but anyone who genuinely thinks he’s super mean just because he doesn’t smile or talk much think they are all true.

Andrew on the other hand would never admit to it but he loves that this is his fan base. He somehow through limited social media interactions amassed a fan base with exactly his sense of humour. Andrew occasionally will let something ominous slip to see what they will come up with. His favourite fact so far is that his so called rivalry with Neil started when Andrew bested Neil in a sward duel in his second year with the foxes. Said duel ending with Andrew slicing off Neil’s arms, they had to be mechanically put back on. That’s the reason Neil began to wear matching wrist bands in order to hide his cyber arms. Neil on the other hand hates this rumour.

Neil: I’m just saying Andrew the times lines don’t even line up!! AND there is no way you would best me in a sward fight!!

Andrew: You’re yelling again cyber junkie
