if there was any season, you'll ask kazuha which he'd liked the most, he would pick winter in an instant. although, if you asked him before dating him, he would say autumn. he would clarify first that he loves every season, but autumn is his favorite because of the weather being not too hot or too cold and how the leaves are crunchy.

you've asked since the season your boyfriend would always reply with was autumn. it was his go-to season. so when it was a sudden change you wanted to ask why and why did he say "you have changed my brain chemistry!"

who taught him this???

finding it strange, you thought otherwise but he insisted that you did. you snorted quietly as kazuha persistently asked you why you reacted that way. "it's because you've liked autumn for so long, i don't understand why you would change it all the sudden." kazuha wrinkled his nose a little out of confusion, sitting down on the brown couch as you draped a blanket over him.

he kept you closer to him, eventually, you were pulled into his lap as he replied, "not because of how much it snowed so you could build a snowman and catch the snowflakes on your tongue. nor the reason to ice skate or drink hot cocoa without looking crazy. it was the season when i met you."

you hid your small smile into kazuha's neck, he could feel the smile against his skin. "why are you hiding your face from me? my beautiful girlfriend?"

"stop being corny, kazuha."

"sweetheart, im not being 'corny', im being honest."

today was a disaster not only it started to snow, your blind date, which hu tao went out of her way to set up, stood you up. now you're freezing your butt off in the snow that's at least two or more inches tall, thankfully, there was a bookstore next door. trudging in the snow, the windows displayed books littered around all over two white shelves on both sides. if you could, you would just admire and stare at the display choosing which book you'd read but it's not the time nor place for it.

the bell rang when a blonde guy opened the engraved oak door for you, you thanked him as he walked behind you. a gust of warm air hits your ruddy cheeks, you felt as if heaven came to you just to kiss you with warmth. you stood on the outskirts of the bookstore, shaking off the snow off of you. leaving the small cluster of snow in a corner, you walked through the bookshelves filled room. as the overhead lights set a warm setting, you went to the cafe that was placed in a corner of the bookstore. it was basically like a barnes & nobles.

although your spirits about your blind date shattered into pieces, this barista at the cafe somehow revived not only your pride but also your heart. "hello, miss, welcome to the cozy corner cafe, as you can see, we are placed in the corner of the store." he nervously laughed at his own joke. even though, it wasn't really funny, you laughed along too.

he visibly relaxed as he continued to speak, "what would you have today?"

"um, this is such a hard choice," you looked briefly at the menu, which was, written on the chalkboard. maybe a tad too tiny. should you go basic and say a hot chocolate? or something else to energize you like a coffee?

"miss, if you're having a bad time trying to choose then tell me what you like and i'll try to concoct a drink for you."

"i don't know about that." you replied, tapping your foot lightly out of sheer anxiety. "sure, you're cute but how would i know if you wouldn't throw a 'potion' in there." you have no idea what the hell you're saying, this guy is so cute and you feel like you're fumbling.

thankfully, he didn't make a comment on the potion joke, his ears turned a slight shade of red, "you can trust me. if you don't like it, you can order something else and i'd throw a cookie on the house."

letting out an exhale, you questioned, "on the house? really..." you squinted at the namecard plaque. "... kazuha?"

"yes, really."

"if you say so... i like my drinks a tad bit sweet but not kid in a candy store sweet, you know? just something warm."

"okay, one mystery drink for a cute girl coming right up."

even though some of the parts of your point of view of the story was true. that wasn't how kazuha had seen it.

you pulled away from his neck, "what do you mean it didn't happen that way?"

"because it didn't!" kazuha insisted.

when kazuha was restocking the romance section of the bookstore, his friend, heizou, pulled him into the cafe's region. "kazuha, it's your shift."

kazuha wrinkled his nose in confusion as heizou grabbed kazuha's apron from the back. tossing the fabric to kazuha, in which, he caught.

"what? i didn't have a shift at the cafe today?" suddenly a light bulb was lit above him as heizou sheepishly hid his face. "...wow okay, pushing me to do your job, aren't you."

"okaay," you said, interrupting kazuha's storytime. "obviously, i wouldn't know this part of the story."

"i know but this is backstory and for context!"

"okay, okay, continue."

heizou cried, kazuha thinks that he could even see tears starting to form, "im late to my blind date, dude!" the brunet nervously laughed. "it started at 2. it's freaking 3 right now."

kazuha snorted quietly, "so your date thinks you stood her up."

heizou placed his hands on his head, stressing out a little, "...yes and our mutual friend even planned it out. think of that one romance book but me and a pretty girl next to me."

kazuha rolled his eyes as he tied the apron's strings behind him, "why would a pretty girl be with you?"

the green eyed guy rolled his eyes, "ok, kazuha, but seriously, i gotta go. i didn't know restocking books would be so long." that was because he never memorized how to do it more efficiently.

"ok but like who would fill in my spot at the register?" the cafe is owned by their friend named kokomi and since it was winter season, she strategized to have her conventionally attractive employees not only to attract more customers being eye candy but also, she had a soft spot for meet cutes. "did you even tell kokomi you had a date today."

"umm thoma and no..."

"this is completely on you. but yes, ill fill in your spot as long as you can get thoma here." kazuha replied as heizou frantically gets his phone from his pocket, texting the assumingly blonde.

"done, he says hes on the way." kazuha nodded as heizou quickly grabbed his coat from the back, dashing out of the door. by the time the door's bell rang, thoma arrived and so did a new customer.

as kazuha was prepping for another customer's drink, they asked for helpful yet oddly detailed drink. it was something with peppermint, vanilla pumps and something... something sweet flower extract? ok, maybe he forgot the order but if they like it regardless, it's a win. "the sweetest drink ever for..." he read out the name. "sucrose?"

a green haired girl walked up to him; a messenger bag filled to the brim with various books. one of the pockets of the bag had different bookmarks and little knickknackeries. she adjusted her glasses, taking the drink from kazuha's hand, "thank you, um, kazuha?"

"no problem, sucrose. please come again!"

then the most beautiful girl he ever laid his eyes on walked into the cafe, a little soaked from the snow from outside. just one look from her and his heart would be out of his chest. oh, wait, she did... oh GOD, kazuha's heart is gone, leaping out of his chest, simply dissipating as you bore into his eyes. oh god, he thought, i think her beauty gave me an instant lobotomy.

as his heart jumped back into his button up covered chest, as it tried to cause a resurrection to his brain, he opted for automatic mode, "pret-" he cleared his throat. oh my god, i almost blurted out "pretty girl". he winced at himself a little. "hello, miss, welcome to the cozy corner cafe, as you can see, we are placed in the corner of the store." maybe, reviving back his brain wasn't a good choice.

he nervously laughed at his own joke, oh my god, this is the worst. i am fumbling! he thought as he frantically needed to put his hands to work. grabbing a cup from the stack and waiting for you to say your order but thankfully, you laughed at his joke too.

"um, this is kind of hard?"

kazuha was trying his best to "ball" out his embarrassment but also wanting to talk to you more, "miss, if you're having a bad time trying to choose then tell me what you like and i'll try to concoct a drink for you."

noticing you fidget a little, he instantly knew he just fumbled right there. please don't leave, please don't leave

"i don't know about that." you replied, tapping your foot lightly out of sheer anxiety. "sure, you're cute but how would i know if you wouldn't throw a 'potion' in there."

oh my god, she called me cute. he hoped you couldn't tell that he's now raditating with pure joy, his ears flushed a little. as for your joke, he was assuming a "potion" would be like poison, kazuha tried to reassure you, "you can trust me. if you don't like it, you can order something else and i'd throw a cookie on the house."

letting out an exhale, you questioned, "on the house? really..." you squinted at the namecard plaque. "... kazuha?"

she knows my name!!

"yes, really."

"if you say so... i like my drinks a tad bit sweet but not kid in a candy store sweet, you know? just something warm."

"okay, one mystery drink for a cute girl coming right up." he turned around after saying that, praying you didn't cringe like he did when he realized he just said that. peeking to the other side, you didn't!!! you were just as flustered as he was.

he quietly whispered to himself, "A WIN!!"

after hearing kazuha's side of the story, you get why he change his favorite season from autumn to winter. you had heard that before you even want to change your favorite season from (fav season) to winter. just kidding, luckily, your initial fav season has been winter so beat that kazuha!

"wait, heizou had a blind date and supposedly stood them up?" you asked as kazuha squinted to the side, trying to remember.

"yes, he did."

"oh my god, remember when i said that my blind date stood me up?"

"well, sorry to admit it, but im glad." you chuckled as he tried to explain himself. "'cause if he didn't, i wouldn't have had the most wonderful, out of this world, running out of words to say to describe you because your beauty if indescribable girlfriend and don't you dare call me corny for speaking my truth!"

I never lost him Trigger warnings for PTSD, mentions of war, torture, etc. Just unapologetic cuddling and comfort ft. Steve Rodgers. Bucky Barnes x F Reader Chapter 8 2560 words fluff, angst, comfort. 18+ MDNI Post TWS Steve realises that he's not the only one looking for Sargent Barnes. Reader is Tony’s sister, a non-enhanced shield agent who recently resurfaced.

“That went great” Y/N says instantly, "Well done, Buck"

The praise washes over him like water, soothing the frayed edges of his soul like a balm.

He relishes in the soft swell of affection for a moment, nuzzling down into her embrace until he feels like he might be able to speak without his voice cracking;

“‘days not over yet, doll” he murmurs eventually, “’s only the afternoon— still plenty of time for me to ruin’ it”

“Don’t be ridiculous” she counters, “You’re here, with me— there’s no way you could ruin anything.”

He scoffs, holding onto her a little bit tighter.

Y/N can feel the way he’s clinging onto her waist with both of his hands, clutching onto her t-shirt like a child who’s afraid of being abandoned.

Her heart is aching, behind her ribs. He’s clearly trying to catch up with the reality of everything that’s just transpired, and she doesn’t really know if she can do anything to help.

Holding him seems to be doing something, at least.

So, she decides to just keep doing that, stroking circles across the back of his ribs.

“I can’t believe he went to the deli dressed like that” she murmurs, “I bet it makes the news.”

He smiles a little at that, small and hidden against her shoulder.

“He… he wasn’t wearin’ his dog tag”

That hurts.

It hurts more than she’d have expected it too.

“I asked him where it was” she tells him, “He says he lost it, y’know? In the ice”

That sounds reasonable, he’d been prepared for a similar answer, but, she doesn’t sound sure. There’s something about her tone, that makes him furrow his brow;

“You don’t think he did?”

“I might be wrong” she sighs, “but, I could’ve sworn I saw it in one of Peg’s old boxes”

It’s why I recognised yours so quickly, she thinks.

“If… If it was in Peggy’s stuff, maybe he did lose it, but she, she found it?”

“Maybe” Y/N agrees, “Or maybe I never saw it at all”

‘Excuse me, boss’ FRIDAY inserts politely, ‘But Bucky is right, I can confirm that when Captain Rodgers was first brought to SHEILD headquarters he was booked in, and his dog tag was noted along with his compass and original suit in the documentation regarding his personal belongings.’

That catches her attention, she tilts her head and hums,

“Was… was he awake when you brought him here?”

‘No’ FRIDAY replies, ‘He remained frozen until our medical officers felt confident in their ability to bring him round without complication’

“But he had it on him when he arrived?” Y/N cuts in, wanting to clarify, “Do you have any record about where it went?”

‘Yes, boss.’ the AI agrees, ‘And whilst there is no official mention of the article after that initial reference, I can use the archived security footage to speculate that Agent Carter may have retrieved it from him during one of her regular visits.’

Oh—

“Well there we go…” Y/N murmurs, stroking Bucky’s back again, “…mystery solved.”

“She…” Bucky says, clearing his throat, “… Y’think she took it?”

“Probably” she sighs, “she loved him, it’s not a stretch to think she’d want to try and keep a piece of him close, ‘specially… ‘specially when she realised that he probably wouldn’t be wakin’ up any time soon.”

Bucky thinks that’s awfully sad.

Sometimes he forgets how unfair fate was to Steve. He forgets that it wasn’t just him who lost everything in ice.

“I think we should get it back to him, don’t you?”

Y/N’s voice makes his head lift up, away from the crook of neck.

He’s starring at her, trying to read wether or not she’s being serious.

“You… you think we can?”

“Of course we can” she chuckles, stroking his cheek, “Baby, if Peggy kept it then it’s here— After she died a lot of her stuff was archived, y’know, for security— Tony and Sharon agreed that the tower was the best place for her personal belongings, since it’s real easy to protect, and, if I saw it before got scooped up, then I’d wager it’s still exactly where it was back then.”

“So” he murmurs, “We… We really could get it for him?”

“Sure” she says, “We can go grab it ourselves, or I can ask Tony or Nat to go and find it?”

His face shifts into something terribly conflicted. For a moment, she thinks that he might speak, but instead, he just ducks his head back down into her shoulder, burying his face against her like hiding might erase the burn of shame he’s experiencing because he just can’t volunteer himself to go and retrieve it himself.

It doesn’t.

Her arms wrapping back around across his body helps though.

So does the way she presses her lips against the top of his head, hushing him before she says,

“FRIDAY, can you message Natasha discretely for me? Do it in Russian so she knows it’s private— ask her to go down to the archives and use my override to get into the safe in room 12, tell her that I think the tag is somewhere between boxes 1-8 under one of Peg’s old dresses. When she’s got it, ask her to bring it up here, don’t let Rodgers see.”

‘Yes, boss’

“I- I’m sorry” she hears Bucky whisper, voice melting against her throat, “I just can’t-“

“It’s okay” she soothes, “Baby, it’s fine, Nat loves snoopin’ around down there, she’ll get it for us, and then you can double check, make sure it’s right before you give it to him.”

“Before-“ he gulps, “before I give it to him?”

“well, yeah” she says, smiling, “Sweetheart, unless you don’t want too?”

“I- I do” he blurts out urgently, “I-I just, thought maybe you-”

“No, baby” she murmurs, “I think it’ll mean more if it’s you.”

‘Ms Romanoff is on her way to the archives now, Boss— she asked me pass on a message to Bucky on her behalf’

“Oh?” Y/N scoffs, pressing another kiss against his head, “What message would that be?”

‘Dobro pozhalovat' domoy, serzhant’

Welcome Home, Sergeant.

That makes a smile bloom across her face.

The recorded greeting being laced with a genuine tone of kindness is enough to make her affection towards her old friend swell in her chest.

“She… Is, is that her voice?”

‘Yes, Bucky- I can relay messages to anybody you like.’

“Could you reply for me? could… could you tell her ‘Thank you, and I- I’m sorry, for— for fightin’ you, and for- for shootin’ you back… back in Japan.”

“Sure I will.”

“Sweetheart” Y/N says, “you know she’s not angry, don’t you?”

“It doesn’t matter” he counters weakly, “It doesn’t matter if she’s angry, doll, I— I’m still sorry.”

The silence that follows doesn’t last long, but it’s still long enough for his words to make Y/N’s chest ache again.

“C’mere” she purrs, settling herself back against the arm of the couch, guiding him up, so he’s back in position between her thighs, “Grab that blanket, baby, are you sure you’re not hungry?”

He lets one of his hands snake out so he can pull the covers out from underneath his legs, whispering out an “I- I can eat if… if you want me to?” as he passes it to her.

“It’s not up to me” Y/N says, arranging the quilt across his back, “what do you want?”

“…To stay here for awhile?…”

He means in her arms. He means against her chest, where he finally feels safe, and there isn’t a single thing in the world that could convince her to prise him away. Not with the way he’s looking at her, wide eyed and touch-starved.

“Then you can stay here awhile.” she tells him, one hand snaking up to cup his cheek, “You can stay right here for as long as you want”

“Excuse the interruption, but Miss Romanoff has sent a reply, Bucky, would you like to hear it now, or shall I store it for later playback?”

Bucky’s eyes widen for a moment, and he pushes back into Y/N’s hand as he gulps;

“Can I- Can I hear it now?”

‘Ofcourse—

Forget about it. You were the first person to give me a decent fight in a decade. We'll rematch when you're feeling better.

There’s a laugh in her tone that makes Y/N scoff, eyes rolling as her old friends voice floods the space.

“See?” she whispers, pressing a kiss against his lips, “Don’t worry about Nat”

His smile is tight and anxious, and she can tell he wants to hide again, so she reminds him that he doesn’t need to reply, and that is when he surrenders, nodding and retreating to her chest.

“We’ll eat later” she says, “You, you just get comfy, it’s been a hell of a mornin’…”

It has, it has been a hell of a morning.

“I love you” is the response he settles on, “I- I love you so much”

That makes her laugh, but it’s sweet, it’s happy and girlish, and he’s beaming into the skin of her throat.

“Baby boy” she coos, “I love you more.”

“’s not possible” he counters, because he can’t not, “doll, It… it’s like you hung the damn moon”

“We’ll argue it out another day” she whispers, feeling him sagging against her, “you’re exhausted.”

He is, he is exhausted, he’s emotionally drained and the heat from her body is drawing him in, making it easy for his breathing to synchronise with hers, deep, and slow.

His eyes are closed and her fingers are in his hair.

God, he feels like the luckiest man alive.

and then, he’s asleep again.

Y/N spends more time showering him in gentle touches, this time. She plays with the curls that are hanging loose across the back of his neck. She presses her lips against his brow and then finally drapes one arm across the back of waist so that she can pull up the STARK internship paperwork that she’d mentioned filling out earlier with the other.

In two hours, it’s early evening and she’s half way through the file.

In three, she’s still half way through, but now Natasha has let her know that she has the dog tag, and she can bring it up whenever.

Now might be the best time, she considers, whilst he’s sleeping— maybe we can avoid another introduction.

She relays her thoughts to FRIDAY who quietly, and politely agrees with her theory, and tells her that ‘Ms Romanoff will be with her in a few moments.’

It’s been just over five minutes when Natasha lets herself into Y/N’s suite.

Unlike Steve she’s used to dropping by, so, there isn’t any cause for her to stop to survey her surroundings.

That is, until she spots her best friend, curled up on her couch with the very same super-solider that had been deemed as ‘HYRDA’s most dangerous weapon’ passed out between her thighs.

That is definitely worth a double take.

Y/N’s eyes roll at the look on her face, and she uses her free hand to beckon her towards her,

“He’s sleeping—” she tells her helpfully, “— and thank you for finding it so quickly”

The dog tag is already in her outstretched palm. Natasha’s smile is curious more than anything else, so Y/N finds herself mirroring it, quirking a brow and murmuring out a “what?” that makes the other woman chuckle, quiet and tempered into the air between them;

“This isn’t just a hook-up is it?”

“No” she replies, “No, I don’t think it is.”

The red-head nods, and her face morphs into something only approving.

“You met him whilst you were away?” she checks, waiting for Y/N to nod before she continues, “So you’ve been, together, for awhile?”

“Yeah” Y/N agrees, “better part of 5 years.”

“Well” Nat sighs, “I hope he deserves you.”

“He does” she’s quick to tell her

“good” the other woman replies, “if you trust him, then that’s good enough for me, just let him know that if he breaks your heart then it won’t just be Tony he has to watch out for.”

That makes Y/N snort, childish and happy as she nods, curling her fingers through Bucky’s hair again.

“Speaking off” Natasha murmurs, “Is he okay? With this whole thing?”

“I think he’s more than okay” she says, “Honestly, I didn’t expect him to be so good about it, y’know? but he’s really gone out of his way to make this easy on us.”

“He can probably tell how happy you are” she replies, “and if somethin’ happens and you need me then-”

“I know you’ve got my back” Y/N swears, “You always have, Nat- ya tebya lyublyu”

I love you

A genuine smile blooms across the red-heads face. She’s beaming as she leans in to press a kiss on Y/N’s brow, and she’s still sporting the same grin when she starts towards the door.

“Do you think he’ll mind if I stop by tomorrow?”

“I don’t know” Y/N says honestly, “I doubt it? If he isn’t ready then I’ll slip out and catch you before training”

And then she’s gone, and Y/N finds herself tucking the dog tag into her pocket so that she can return her attention to the papers she’d been working on before.

Bucky doesn’t stir for another hour. By then she’s actually almost finished. She’s so focused on the task at hand that she only notices he’s awake when he moves, rolling onto his side so he can peer at the glowing hologram she’s typing on.

“Hey, love” she purrs, “Sorry, I thought I’d try and get this finished whilst you slept.”

“Don’t be sorry, doll” he replies, voice cracking with disuse, “Have I been out long?”

“3 hours, maybe 4?” Y/N answers, looking at the clock, “it’s about 8 now, Nat’s been and gone.”

That catches his attention, he paws at his eyes, and then at his chin, all whilst using his metal arm to support his weight so he can stare at her face.

“What?” she presses, typing the final sentence of her conclusion with impressive speed, “Did you want me to wake you?”

“No” he admits, “I- I just didn’t think she’d be able to find it so quick”

The papers are finished so Y/N hits submit, dismissing the screen with a flick of her wrist so that she can give him her full attention.

“It wasn’t hidden” she reminds him calmly, “Do you want to see it?”

His lip quirks as he nods.

She shifts her hips pulling the silver, age-stained trinket out of her pocket before letting the charm drop, so that its where he can reach out and grab it.

He does, turning it over in his flesh fingers as his eyes scan the engravings again and again.

“Is it the right thing?” she wonders, already suspecting from the look on his face that it is, “I’m pretty sure, but-”

“Yeah” he says, “Yeah, it- it’s right— can I give it to him now?”

Planning said I'd need 12 hours, since ICE-trains were no go due to the ticket... I needed 2 days. Worth it, she was getting married and was so happy!)

My work is done now! Now I need to fight the shyness and attack others with this.

Bucky’s path up the sixty-three storey office building hacking through secure doorways and evading cameras is proven all for naught when he finally gets into the penthouse office and is met with the whistling breeze coming in through the shattered window — and his mark head down on his glass-top desk in a pool of blood. ‘ God damn it. ’

Bucky’s noticed a pattern over the past couple of months of rocking up to a mission, only to find his job completed for him. On paper, Bucky is no assassin. It wouldn’t do for word to get out that SHIELD was in that kind of business. They were supposed to be good guys, after all. But some cases required a certain touch and that was where people like Bucky came in. His mission directive was never to assassinate — but he’d earned his status by reading between the lines, and was therefore invaluable to HQ. This target, though, was not an assassination target. Even if it had been, SHIELD are a lot more subtle in their approach to execution and Bucky was skilled in the art of staging a natural death. There’s nothing natural about this. The guy was sniped out and even if Bucky tried to clean this mess up a little, a coroner would be able to figure out the cause of death probably with their eyes closed.

‘ Everything okay, Barnes ? ’ comes the voice in his ear.

‘ No, ’ Bucky grits out, stepping over glass to jab two fingers at the fortune 500 CEO’s neck, checking for a pulse. There is none, obviously, and his fingers come away bloody. ‘ Mission’s compromised. Again. Someone’s getting to these asshats before us and it’s really starting to piss me off. ’

‘ Starting to ? You know all of Ops heard your row with Hill last time you tried to prove ‘ he was dead when I got there. ’ You gotta start wearing your body cam. ’

‘ No thanks. Hey, can you scan the building across the road ? Try, uh, the sixty-second floor. Or sixtieth, actually. Angle of the bullet’s low. ’ He wrinkles his nose, pushing the guy’s head down to inspect the entry point at the back of the neck.

‘ Ah — floor’s empty. HVAC’s kicked in . . . looks like there’s a window left open. Wait, hang on — someone just accessed the elevator. They’re riding the emergency override down . . . That’s about — 82 seconds ‘til they reach the bottom — and counting. ’

‘ Got it. Thanks. Tell Hill I’m calling it a night. Mission’s a bust. Thanks for your help, Saunders. ’

He pockets his in-ear device. Fifteen seconds to set up his anchor and rope. Fifty-three to repel down the front of the building through the window his mystery sniper had graciously broken for him, fingerless gloves taking the brunt of the rope burn. It’s late enough, dark enough that he might just get away without being seen.

Thirteen seconds to cross the street. He curses under his breath — was he too late ? If he’d just sniped someone from another building, where would he go ? Rounding the corner takes him to the avenue that runs between the tall buildings that line the street. It’s poorly lit and deserted at this time and if he wasn’t looking for someone coming out of the emergency exit he would’ve missed the shadow slinking out into the dark.

‘ Hey ! ’ he calls out, pulling out his gun and breaking into a sprint. He’d been told the mystery killer wasn’t a priority by SHIELD, but he’d be damned if he was just going to let this guy get away with ruining all his missions.

He looked ridiculous, with eight foot of almost-dead Christmas tree on his back. The plus side was that people were giving them a wide berth. The downside was that they still had another borough's worth of walking to go. ' How're you going to decorate this thing, anyway ? It's barely got any pine needles. '

fine morning F60 ¼° at 9 am breakfast at 9 ½ and at yesterdays’ accounts till 11 20/.. – then off to the mine at 11 ½ - we walked – there at 11 55/.. in 25 minutes – sent Jean back for A-‘s sketch book etc. and my travelling cap (casquette, blue cloth from Jupp’s London 1835) I had no idea of this mine – a large oval opening perhaps about 200 yards in circumference with seven great large shed-covered 2 horse gins and their tackling on the north side (left as we stand) at C (close to the gin that let us down into the bottom) in the Damp-machine (steam engine now disused)

deep achtzig klafter (80 klafter) the mien goes in a Southwest (I think he said) direction 80 famms (1 famm = 3 ells) I had no idea of this mine – an enormous yawing gulph to look down into with a deep chasm or cleft entrance to the mine itself – the red timbers supporting the sheds very picturesque on the north side which is walled at the top with a good ashler wall 4 or 5 yards (high down to the solid rock) to keep all safe at the top – the stone at the top not worth much – 3 sorts – the best yields 64 p.c. of iron – no foundries here – the ore is sent away in winter – 12 proprietors and comte...................... who has one-third of the whole mine

200 workmen in the mine

1st pit 100 Klafter deep (mellan faltet Dannemora)

2nd ditto 120 Klafter deep ( Sudra faltet Dannemora) does not communicate with the gulph sketched above, and is close to the square tower-like blacksmiths‘ shop (to the southwest) and here are 7 pits close together and here is the best ore.

observed in the blacksmiths’ shop very convenient rack for whimbles – would do very well for our rails

standing one of the side walls – rack about 2ft. damp 4 or 5 ft. high and the divisions about a foot wide?

the ore consist of Eisen (iron) quartz and Zweifel (sulphur) ready to go down at 2pm tied my pelisse shirt tight round my middle put on my travelling cap and one of mans frock coats, and did not feel it too warm 8 minutes going down and the same coming up –

200 workmen in the mine and about 200 more employed 1 way or other

1 hundred thousand Shipond of stone got per annum

the Hull company has taken the whole mine and all that is got and pays every tenth part to the crown –

Every workman paid per ton – when the stone is hardest 14sk. rigs.

and when softest 3 1/2sk. rigs per ton – a good man can get 4 tons and more a day – or (for the stone has to be got and landed) a man can earn a rigs per day dollar – 10 pair of horses and 14 pair of oxen – one cay say 40 pair = 80 horses for all the work – the pump is worked by a water mil ¼ mile off – on reaching the bottom turn along the mine or drift at d, 20 famms long – wants only one famm of being completed and then will open a communication from this great gulph to the Stegge ladders that go down into the pit at that place

August Tuesday 27 these works not expensive – a mass of harded snow and ice at the bottom – the better iron at the bottom, and 20 famm deeper at the south pits –

Kleina (black stone, argillaceous) not Eissen (iron) near the top – paid the man at 3 ¼ and then stood by A- as she sketched – just ½ hour in the bottom –

the blasts are fired at noon – the big pieces are broken in the natural cleavages by making fires (charcoal) under them -

a tonneau (I went down in one) seems about as big as one of our 12 gallon tubs –

home in 25 minutes at 4 55/.. – dinner at 5 10/.. in 40 minutes – fried fish (brochet) Moorcock, gelinotte (partridge) and sweet omelette and potatoes and cucumber – good – the Moorcock looked like a plump rumpless barn-door fowl – and sent to table like one without head or feet (legs cut off at the knee) – the outer flesh brown – the inner (on the breast bone) quite white – an auction outside our Inn door, - of carts, a gig, tubs, pottery etc. etc. saw a largeish common white round pot dish knocked down at one dollar rigs – 2 or 3 priests, and several respectable looking men and women and peasants were assembled – out at 6 – sauntered in the village (Österby) to Mr. Tamms’ forges – then about his sheds and barns and then into his garden – 5 gardeners (garçons) and 4 filles – hothouses –pineries – grapes under cucumber frames – fruit from July to October – planted in a good light soil 1 vines 2 a pit

three Swedish Ells deep and 2 or 3 ditto wide filled

with horse dung – fresh dung every year – when fruiting over, the glasses taken off, and then as soon as the leaves have fallen rafters are laid over, and on these rafters an ell deep

“Moorcock” a pheasant the woman of the house said worth rigsdollar.

Tuesday 27 September [August] of litter for the winter says from 1 November to 1 April when the glasses are put on again and the vines grown vigorously – vines here of 30 years old – several sort so grapes – all looking well – gave the man 80sk. banco – had just written so far at 7 20/.. – get to Stockholm the gardening book of the Directeur Landström – vide for this manner of cultivation [vating] the vine – the vines are trained on espaliers – then left John at the Inn and A- and I sauntered about till came in at 8 – very fine day – then looking at maps ¼ hour –
