A fantasy read-list: B-1

Part B: The First Classical Fantasy

1) On one side, the British Isles... 

We looked at the most ancient roots of the fantasy genre, which are... well, literaly antique roots - the texts of the Antiquity, the myths and mythologies of the world, the legends of the so-called “pagans” and the tales of long-gone societies, cultures and civilizations. Plus the true, literal “medieval fantasy” and some Arthuriana sprinkled at the top. Now I want to explore the Renaissance fantasy - or rather the first wave and apparition in literature of true “proto-fantasy”. These classical works that are still heavy influences and inspirations on modern fantasy pieces, but are younger than all the mythological and medieval stuff. 

Given this huge read-list promises to be very big, very long and span over several years, I will try to restrain myself here to two nation-tied phenomenon. And in this specific post I will look at a given wave of “classical proto-fantasy” in the British Isles... Beginning with none other than...

# Shakespeare. William Shakespeare, the Bard of Avalon, the greatest playwright of England and a man whose work shaped our common imagination and popular culture today. Of course, since this list is focused about the wide genre of fantasy, I must start by listing his more openly supernatural and fantastical plays. On one side you have a lighter, more colorful and whimsical world of wonders and magic, in the shape of supernatural comedies, be it A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with its now world-known depiction of the fairy court as the Titania-Oberon-Puck triangle, or The Tempest, which implanted archetypal figures such as Prospero the wizard, Ariel the aerial spirit or the monstrous Caliban. On the darker side of fantasy, you have the grim and nightmarish tragedies that are Hamlet, one of the most famous cases of royal hauntings and madness in the history of theater, or Macbeth, which changed forever the way people view witches throught its iconic trio of Weird Sisters. 

But the beautiful thing with Shakespeare is that even in his more “mundane” and “realistic” works, the magic never truly goes away. Thanks to his poetic writing and his love of symbolism and mysticism, Shakespeare maintains throughout his work a fantastical ambiance, an ambiguous tone that opens the door for many oniric sequences or supernatural readings. The description of Mab, queen of fairies, in Romeo and Juliet was just as influential on fairy folklore as A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The abnormal storm and pagan madness of King Lear leaves one wondering about the true cosmic powers at work here. And even in historical works witchcraft is never far away - such as with Richard III, where devilish forces and hellish characters are at play in an well-recorded historical event... 

# But beyond Shakespeare, or rather all around him, there was a constellation of other poets and playwrights who helped conceive, flesh out and develop this “wonder-wave” that swept across Elizabethan England. Take Shakespeare’s most famous rival for example, Christopher Marlowe, who wrote The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, the first ever adaptation of the Faust legend for the stage. You have Edmund Spenser and his mystical fay epic, The Faerie Queene, which influenced not just Shakespeare but many more authors of knight adventures and fairy works. I can also mention Michael Drayton’s Nimphidia, The Court of Fairy (or Nymphidia depending on how you write it), a poem drawing from Shakespeare’s fairy characters to depict all the affairs, treacheries and secrets at the otherworld’s court ; or the various Elizabethan retellings of Ovid’s Metamorphosis written by John Lily (Endymion, Midas, Galathea...). 

# And of course, I have to point out here that beyond specific authors, Shakespeare’s fantastical works drew from a lot of various sources, all representing different fragments or aspects of the way people approached the supernatural, folklore and legends in their time. For example, the more Jacobean play The Witch by Thomas Middleton, which had elements reused for Macbeth ; or the Daemonologie of King James, which also influenced Shakespeare’s writing of demons and witches. I can also drop here names going from quite obscure today, such as The Spanish Tragedy of Thomas Kyd, to behemoths of culture, like Dante’s Divine Comedy. 

# Speaking of a man of the Isles who explored and influenced the fairy literature... I have to mention Robert Kirk, and his treatise on fairies and ghost known as The Secret Commonwealth. To this day, Kirk is still considered one of the greatest folklorists and collector of supernatural tale and fairy/ghost/witch beliefs of the 17th century, and The Secret Commonwealth stays one of the major “fairy books”. 

# Leaving a bit the topic of fairies, I will conclude this post with one name... Ossian. During the 18th century, James Macpherson discovered and translated ancient Gaelic texts of Scotland - a series of epic poems attributed to a legendary bard by the name of Ossian. He started by translating Fingal, An Epic Poem in Six Books, and then worked on Temora, An Ancient Epic Poem, before collecting it all as The Works of Ossian. This discovery and translated was a HUGE phenomenon, and a revolution in the world of culture. Up until that point, people had praised the Homeric epics and thought the “Homeric phenomenon” was a one-time thing that couldn’t have happened anywhere else but Ancient Greece... And yet here were these great, glorious, excellently done, epic poems of mythical heroes and ancient witchcraft and gods, attributed to a mythical god-inspired bard and poet, part of another form of Antiquity than the Greco-Roman one. People jubilated upon discovering the “Celtic Homer”, and praised these grea poems proving that the Greek epics could be challenged by Gaelic sagas... 

... But the thing is that James Macpherson probably never translated those works, and that maybe Ossian was a purely fictional invention. You see, James Macpherson was a poet himself with not much success before “discovering” the works of Ossian, and he was deeply passionate about ancient Scottish poetry and Celtic texts and the like, collecting them and imitating them. Despite their enormous importance and influence for literary movements, and painters across Europe, and poets for centuries to come, the poems of Ossian are clearly artificial in nature, written by Macpherson alone without any “translation” required. The poet purposefully created a “Celtic Homer”, as a way to sell his work - and selling it did! Mind you, the Ossian poems stay true to the texts and essence of ancient Celtic legends and myths. Macpherson knew his sources, as I said was passionate about ancient Gaelic poetry, and he took inspiration and influence from works such as the Ulster cycle, the Fenian cycle, the Book of the Dun Cow, the Book of Lismore or The Yellow Book of Lecan... The very fictional character of Ossian was actually shaped after the mythological character of Oisin. But Ossian and his poems stay an artificial creation of an 18th century poet, even though they fit perfectly alongside antique Celtic texts. It is similar to how nowadays Titania is an integral part of fairy folklore, and yet she was a literary inventon of Shakespeare for one of his plays.

Semi spoilery ramble about the Mr Darcy & Miss Tilney Mysteries:

OK right so I read The Murder of Mr Wickham like when it came out last year and I finished The Late Mrs Willoughby yday and!! I still love both oc main characters and have never been more frustrated by an ending as I have been w TLMW bc I was so desperate for them to just!!! Confess their feelings!!!

Also more than anything I kind of love the fact that it's a deconstruction of the Magical Autistic Detective Trope. Literally the last thing I expected these books to be but it's like top 3 reasons why this book is so good.

Esp bc it's set when autism just... wasn't understood to be a thing, it's shown to be hard for Jonathan!! He doesn't have magical powers, he has special interests in mostly obscure stuff! People are mean to him or confused by him or don't understand him and he is just convinced that he's never going to have friends who he can ever really be himself around.

And like there have not been many scenes that made me more visceral uncomfortable that the bit in book 2 when he's at a dinner party and one of his old schoolmates clocks that he has a crush, and intentionally asks him abt his special interest so he'll humiliate himself by going on and on about it without noticing. Like I felt that IN MY BONES I think we all have an experience like that if we don't mask carefully enough.

Sometimes Juliet gives neurodivergent vibes too, she just seems to be more adept at masking so it's less obvious to the reader, herself, and everyone else. Like Jonathan is semi regularly overwhelmed and frequently, sometimes unconsciously stims by rocking, and his parents and everyone around him have just convinced him there's something wrong with him.

Juliet has moments where the mask slips and she's blunt and is totally unaware of the unspoken social dance happening around her and she's like huh society's a fucking weird place wish it made more sense. Ah well. Alas.

I think the author does the Canon Austen characters brilliantly too!! I know some ppl have said that Fanny and Edmund annoyed them in book 1 but honestly (and this may be bc I'm a Mansfield Park girlie) I loved them and I loved the way their story paralleled their book! Fanny is right and Edmund comes to realise that is basically what it's about, and Fanny's strength of character beneath all her difficulties being assertive is basically the best thing about her.

Loved the Knightleys. Hilarious. Thought Emma was going to eat him mid way through the book and not in a good way, so; accurate. Darcy and Lizzie not communicating, her misunderstanding and being annoyed at him, him thinking his stoicism is going to help them through a hard time when actually it's isolated them from each other - nice parallel, like it.

I felt endlessly bad for Wentworth and Anne, hope they come back all better in a future book.

Honestly loved Brandon and Marianne, I felt like they were very true to their book characters.

Anyway my very fervent hope is that next book we get a Lady Susan Cameo, an icon, truly That Bitch. Or maybe they go to Sanditon idk, give me some resolution for that squad.

Got the vibe that maybe Juliet is going to Bath at some point in the near future. So I wonder who she'll meet then. I mean obviously Jonathan bc fate wants them to fall in love and get married and she can teach their kids how to climb trees and he can teach them the piano, but who else!!

Book only just came out and I'm hype for the next one but honestly it ended on a cliffhanger for them!! I want them to be friends again! No juliet he does like you he just can't make eye contact and doesn't like other people touching him!! I want them to meet again and solve idk the fucking stabbing of Sir Walter Elliot or Aunt Norris or Mr Elton!

And also comes their feelings the agony of not knowing kills me lol.

The Lorax (The Lorax)

I hope it is well known that I love a kids movie and The Lorax is one of my favorites ever! He speaks for the trees! 🥲 It literally makes me cry when he has the little funeral for the first tree I love him so much.

Jane Eyre (Jane Eyre)

Obviously the title character is the best one. Um what more could you want than poor, plain, and simple Jane. I don’t really know- this book was so insanely wild like what? but also like I feel so sad for Jane in so much of the beginning- my precious baby. But I love how she realizes her worth and value and makes a life for herself and finds family and like yes, is it insane that Mr. Rochester kept his wife in the attic and then that wife later jumped off the top of his burning mansion to her death and Jane later marries that man? Absolutely of course but it’s all part of the drama and the intrigue that is Jane Eyre.

Cher Horowitz (Clueless)

Yes, she is the worst ever, but also if you think about it…I love her. The audacity. The style. The story. I love her. I love that she has some real character growth and learns the value of friendship and like giving a little and I think it’s a really fun adaptation of Emma and the cultural impact? I mean come on!

Ted Lasso (Ted Lasso)

Okay like yes, is every character in this show somehow insanely amazing? Yes. But Ted just has this energy and joy that I want so badly to have in my life! I feel like I’m a pretty positive person, but he just absolutely outshines everyone and like how do I be like that? He is so good.

Edmund Hewlett (TURN)

But also Anna Strong, you know what I mean?? How can I choose between them! I love them both so much- Anna is our queen honestly and just who is doing it like her?? Nobody, that’s who! But Edmund is my skrunkly little baby and I love him too much he is too precious and too pure for this world he deserved to live happily ever after with Anna. 😭

Effie Trinket (The Hunger Games)

Okay, like, yes, obviously Katniss is our queen and we love her endlessly, BUT I have an undying love for Effie!! She is way superficial at the beginning of the series and so wrapped up in Capital culture, but I love the way she starts to see through the mask of the Games even in the first book/movie and especially through the second and third. I think she really understands the depth of evil that the Games perpetuate and I really liked watching her transformation. Plus like who can ignore her insane style and over-the-top aesthetic? Iconic.

Janet Wood (Three’s Company)

My queen angel Janet. She’s the rock of the apartment- the rest of them are literally insane and she holds them all together with logic and intelligence and steadfastness. She is also so cool and amazing and what a sweet baby I just want her to be happy.

Angela Bower (Who’s the Boss)

My namesake, of course. Don’t get me wrong, I love Tony so much also! But Angela is so cool, I just love her. She is smart & dorky and confident and just awesome all around. She is hard-working and so caring, and like the queen of late-80s-early-90s fashion and that is all thank you.

Soo .. Mr . Tumnus would actually be nervous , very nervous. Lucy would be there to comfort him and help him out , make him feel confident but he'll just be as nervous and doubtful of himself as a groom could be . He really loves you and would want the best for you , which is why he's gonna be doubtful if he'll be able to be that .

It could happen that your marriage is venue is Cair Paravel? I don't think there are any specific traditions that Narnians or Fauns follow , but i think that Lucy , Edmund , Peter and Susan..even aslan would want this marriage to be grand because Mr.Tumnus (and even you!) are really special to them and their friends .

Aslan would definitely come to bless you or you know , do the rituals of the marriage..

The fauns would definitely do a special dance and there would be speeches from you , Mr.tumnus (imagine him being emotional, shy and stuttering hehe cute !) , your friends and (family?) . People from outside Narnia would also be invited if you're fine with it !

I think you both could share some romantic scenes like cleaning each other's mouth and staring at each other , eating together and maybe some hugs and laying head on shoulder !

Staying back in Narnia forever would be a bit melancholic for you since you'll have to leave the world you're from , forever .. but you'll be happy because it's all worth it . The faun community or as i say , all fauns are gonna love you so much , really!

Mr.Tumnus would be very proud of you being his wife and he's gonna shout(not literally shout... Just being excited about talking how proud he is of you .. that you're his wife !) it everywhere when someone asks him .

Each and every Narnian would actually tell their children about your love story as a fairytale or how they made it till the end or this is what forever is called you know . Overall a positive effect on Narnians !

Ah yes, the iconic butt scenes of a historical based series.

The only guy I fancied got beheaded, Eadric Streona played by Gavin Drea, he literally got bye bitched. Mild (large) request for Drea to play more characters with long hair though. Legitimately log pulled and out and bye.

Leif Erikson, and Freydis are both a seemingly pretty cool pair. He looks confused all the time, but intelligent, and sails ships well, so that should be his tinder bio lmao, and she is like proper hench. (There was an event where they battled eachother for fun to see who won type of thing, probably for practice)

Harald is over rated but seems okay? Like he’s there then is like, everyone, chill, and now my butt is out again in the next scene. He sort of looks like Johnny Depp but not at all, I don’t know.

Count Olaf is a.. just stop.

Emma of Normandy, Jarl Estrid Haakon, Queen Ælfgifu are all. 😮‍💨 Honestly good or bad, idk I’m overwhelmed by lady power energy here.

Prince Edmund is just like Joffrey Baratheon that doesn’t wear a crown and screams like Malfoy or something, I wish he’d just fallen into the river when he tried running away from the war like a baby on a broken bridge.

i am going to simultaneously read your response + ramble my own thoughts ++ inform you that i read the books after s1 came out and The Viscount Who Loved Me is tied for my favorite of the series. The enemies-to-lovers was absolutely delicious (i do have words on how this was handled in the series 😠)

i wanted the entire season in one sitting so i will do my best not to spoil the ending, but it all blends together. sorry in advance!

ok first and foremost i am OBSESSED with how they made the sheffield nee sharma's of indian descent. so much better than the book because of the heritage and no need for kate's traumatic backstory similar to anthonys anymore. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.

all of your thots are correct. i concur. johnny b done did us proud. all of the gifs of him looking at kate and smelling her has me swooning STILL. ugh i cannot wait to see his character growth in the next two seasons. i want to say more but will refrain until after you watch the last episode. let us put a pin in this thot 📌

SHE PLAYED THIS CHARACTER SO WELL. Kate is an absolute entitled bitch in the book and series kate? just a woman wanting the best for her sister and not putting up with societys bullshit. Yes yes. her face and eyes and just HER 🔥🔥 Can we talk about her little lilac lingerie in the garden scene? I want.

actually let us talk more about that garden sex scene because HOLY HELL. Anthony Bridgerton in the book would NEVER. Never ever make their first (and few after) all about Kate. The Anthony of the book was very set in his 'wed bed bred' ways and not falling in love with his wife. In the books the bee scene is ICONIC. It came too soon in the series because in the books Ant actually freaks the fuck out and tries to suck the sting out of Kate's tit and Violet and Mary catch them. So she's compromised and they have a swift wedding. The rest of the book is him is being grumpy and gold to his viscountess and not falling in love with her.

Anthony never proposed to Edwina in the book either. That wedding arc was TOO MUCH. I hated it. Book Kate and Edwina have SUCH a strong relationship that Edwina actually was steering the Kathony ship even when he was still set on courting Edwina. Yelling at Kate and being angry was waaay too ooc for our diamond.

the series robbed us of even more BEAUTIFUL build up and hate sex and trying not to love the sex with them sex and the 'i don't need no one' sex and kathony being absolute SLUTS for one another.

THEIR CHEMISTRY IS SO SO GOOD IN THE SHOW. Brilliant. Wonderful. Would watch another season dedicated to them.

I honestly cried every time they talked about Edmund. My poor traumatized Ant bby. (and violet. i cannot imagine that heartbreak esp whilst pregnant. never wanna go through that)

LOATHING ANTHONY IS THE POINT!!!!!!! He's the character you're meant to hate and omfg he does it so well. literally shaving off those mutton chops makes the man at least 70% more lovable. Make the man 6'5, piercing blue eyes, and a pixel with a passion for medicine and i mean --- Anthony is a boy that had to grow to a man at 19, responsible for that big ol' loving family. Poor kid.

-Blorbo (Favorite, Character that consumes my thoughts) Zoro. Without a doubt. This fucking guy I SWEAR. He has my mind in a fucking death grip -Scrunkly (my "baby", character that gives me cuteness aggression) I mean, Chopper. He's the definition of being "So shaped" I feel gjsklfdg. -Scrimblo Bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave) I know I just need to actually search for him and I'll find content on here of him, but I really dig Smoker and in going through One Piece art I haven't seen him come up once. I actually might do that after writing this up lmao. Him telling the people he works for to “go to hell” because they gave him the credit for saving Alabasta and wouldn’t acknowledge that it'd been the straw hats? Even though he'd gone after the Straw Hats himself before? Iconic. Had me roaring. You tell 'em, King! -Glup Shitto (Obscure Background favorite) hmm hard to tell just because I don't know who doesn't become a really big character at some point in this long ass show but I wanna say Zeff? He made me cry the way he wanted to ensure Sanji got out to see the world and that he chased after his dream and didn't stay at the restaurant because Sanji felt indebted to him. Between him and Smoker does this just mean I like the angry but caring dad vibe characters? Maybe. -Poor Little Meow Meow ("problematic"/pathetic fave) Usopp rant activated I apologize in advance that this is long jgslkdfg. Okay, so I really love Usopp's character but I do think One Piece over does it in making sure he comes across as the pathetic coward sometimes. They need to give him more shining moments without beating in the 'Haha, Usopp was useless again' horse. And they might! I've heard heard good things about Water 7. And I don't actually mind his frequent over-reactions and his loud nervous interjections/lies he makes to make himself sound big and tough. But, I didn't like that they said he made Nami's weapon a party prop primarily and only eventually did OP go "Okay, but actually this thing IS a very useful weapon and it works really well with Nami's strengths". My (maybe) controversial opinion? I LOVED the Syrup Village Arc. I think Usopp's writing in that arc was amazing. He literally is the bravest warrior because he's fucking terrified (as he honestly should be) of most of the stuff that crosses the crew's way but will put his life on the line to keep people safe and has put himself between a bad guy and innocent people to get the enemy to attack him instead. Also, it is... unfortunate the way one piece draws him and other poc characters ;>> Usopp is a favorite character that... I wish was in the hands of someone else writing-wise if that makes sense. I would never call Usopp my poor little meow meow lmaoo but I'm going to say Usopp fits here. - Horse Plinko (Character I would torment for fun) Oh, so many of them tbh but Zoro and Sanji both. These two need to be bullied for how ridiculous they are when they're trying to one-up each other. - Eeby Deeby (Character I would send to super hell) Sanji Kidding, but I just can't stand him sometimes jgkldfg. He gets sent to superhell for his painful and annoying straight act despite clearly having a bi awakening in meeting Ace lmaoo.

• That disappinted look in Susan's eyes when she sees Peter fighting, and they way she doesn't do anything to help him. Like girl they are beating your brother??

• Edmund comes and saves Peter by simply jumping on everyone who is trying to hurt Peter. We love a clever and quick boi™

• Lucy's little comfort to Peter. *sniffing*

• Peter's iconic hair, that rebel and sassy hair.

• “I'm not touching you!” “I'M NOT HOLDING YOUR HAND!”

• How happy they are at the beach and the way they finally can have pure fun. *more sniffing*

• Narnia is so beautiful in summer and Pevensies look so beautiful too.

• And for my own please, I'll mention how beautiful Peter looks when he is playing in the sea and walking among the ruins.

• The way Lucy holds Peter's hand to show him the way and THE TORCH SCENE GETS ME EVERYTIME.

• Lucy greeting and trusting in a bear is me vs. life. Susan saying a bear to stay away from Lucy is me vs. life again.

• And that bear scene is very clever to me. It shows that those bad times have an effect on everyone. How even Narnians, kind, gentle, happy Narnians turned into wild creatures because of bad times. Also Susan not killing the bear immediately shows how gentle she is and she always gives a chance.

• “I can hear you.” We love a done™ prince. And him asking questions about Narnia is so cute!

• That zoom to Caspian's face is kiLLING ME.

• AND REEPICHEEP I'd kill and die for him unless he kills and dies for me first.

• CENTAURS ARE BACK!!! Oh I love them so much.

• “You can't carry a map in your heads.” “That's because we have something in them.” LUCY DIDN'T STUTTER.

• The look in Peter's face when he sees the making of the bridge. He is like “Not my kingdom, you bitches!”

• The conversaion between Lucy and Susan... I hate to think their struggles, adjusting to Narnia, adjusting to England.

• Lucy telling a tree to wake up is me vs. life, again.

• The way Peter just comes and hides her out of nowhere... WE LOVE A PROTECTIVE BROTHER.

• When Caspian and Peter fights... Okay, for your safety I'll shut up but the way Peter is ready to hit him with a rock is both funny and shows how a quick and smart fighter he is.

• “PETAH!” Okay Susan, we get it honey.

• “Well if you like, we can come back in a few years.” LIKE WHY IS NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT HIS SASS??

• I love that there are pictures of Pevensies and Golden Age on the walls. It makes me feel so majestic.

• When Peter and Caspian talk at the same time.

• And Edmund killing the wolfish thing is so cool, he is a very talented warrior. Also him stabbing Jadis, he gives like zero fucks.

• And when the ice is broken, they see Aslan on the wall and it is such a strong scene!!

• When he hits Miraz's wound. He is a smart fighter, and I'll not even bring up how he stabs Miraz.
