#paths of the dead
Text
What if Gimli found the paths of the dead more terrifying than any of the others because as a dwarf underground spaces are usually comforting to him.
It is utterly horrifying to him for the same reason horror movies use lullabies to freak us out- the perversion of the familiar strikes a particularly deep note of horror.
The danger was action movie danger until the paths of the dead, when suddenly Gimli is in the literal uncanny valley- his every sense is full of how wrong this feels, except his eyes which perceive a tunnel, something that should feel like home.
Tl.dr The paths of the dead give dwarves cursed doll vibes.

Gimli, in the Paths of the Dead: I'm not afraid of ghosts!
Aragorn: That's the spirit!

And there stood Gimli the Dwarf left all alone.
His knees shook, and he was wroth with himself. 'Here is a thing unheard of!' he said. 'An Elf will go underground and a Dwarf dare not!' With that he plunged in. But it seemed to him that he dragged his feet like lead over the threshold; and at once a blindness came upon him, even upon Gimli Glóin's son who had walked unafraid in many deep places of the world.
I always feel for Gimli’s uncanny valley moment here: this here is a doorway leading into a passage beneath a mountain - it should be a familiar environment for him, even comforting.
Instead this whole place feels deeply wrong in ways he cannot even properly articulate, and he turns his anger on himself to be able to master his unease. That he finally crosses that threshold is probably the bravest thing he ever does.

I had almost forgotten that there was this unfinished painting of the Paths of the Dead. It is *very* large (70 x 100 cm) and I have no idea whether I should finish it or not... I mean, who hangs something like that on their wall? (What did I even think when I started this??)

Then Legolas laid his hands on his eyes and sang some words that went soft in the gloom, until he suffered himself to be led, and Legolas passed in.

Over the land there lies a long shadow,
westward reaching wings of darkness.
The Tower trembles; to the tombs of kings
doom approaches. The Dead awaken;
for the hour is come for the oathbreakers:
at the Stone of Erech they shall stand again
and hear there a horn in the hills ringing.
Whose horn shall it be? Who shall call them
from the grey twilight, the forgotten people?
The heir of him to whom the oath they swore.
From the North shall he come, need shall drive him:
he shall pass the Door to the Paths of the Dead.

Look at this friend I made on my way home the other day! What a glorious creature! So gracile and smooth! Truly a peak being. What a privilege it is to share this time in Earth’s history with creatures like this.

"Well, this is a bad idea," Tim says, hands on his hips as he surveys the mess they’ve made in the cave.
"Nah," Danny replies, twirling his screwdriver in the air in what is probably meant to be an impressive trick to inspire confidence, except he fumbles it and it clangs to the floor loudly, "we good. If a younger version of myself hasn't come forward in time to stop me, how bad can it be?"
"Shouldn't it be the other way round?"
"What?"
"Normally, it's an older version of yourself going backwards in time to stop you, right?"
"Not in my experience."
Danny's grin is impossibly feral and a shiver runs up Tim's spine.
"This is definitely a bad idea."
