Terrible Fic Idea #87: Percy Jackson, but make it MCU
Look, I didn't want to come up with yet another crazy PJO crossover, but here I am. Because instead of just coming up with the lightest, fluffiest, gayest PJO romance possible - which is what I wanted - I had to turn it into an MCU identity reveal fic too.
Or: What if post-ToA Percy Jackson was Peter Parker's caseworker following Aunt May's untimely death?
Just imagine it:
Tony Stark first meets Percy Jackson in the ICU of Metropolitan General the day after Peter and his aunt are caught in a terrible subway accident. May dies on scene. Even with his advanced healing, Peter is badly injured and taken to the nearest hospital - where it quickly becomes apparent he's Enhanced. It takes about 24 hours for the news to make its way to Tony, who immediately storms the hospital with the intention of taking Peter back to his Tower to heal-
-only to be told Peter's not going anywhere by the social worker assigned to the case.
This is remarkable for many reasons, not the least because the social worker is an unassuming, overworked 27-year-old wearing Finding Nemo socks and a faded Save the Oceans t-shirt. That the case worker - Percy Jackson - stands his ground in the face of Iron Man's wrath is even more remarkable, but Tony is forced to admit the kid has a point: he can't just let someone without any obvious connection to a minor walk off with said minor, particularly when that minor is Enhanced.
It takes Tony a couple days to get his ducks in a row, proving that he is not only able and willing to take in Peter, but is the one his aunt wanted to take care of him in the event something happened to her. During that time he has JARVIS research everything he can on Percy (lives in a Central Park penthouse owned by his long-time boyfriend, a successful music producer; volunteers for a NPO started by his best friend dedicated to restoring the wild; brief stint as the youngest ever on the FBI's most wanted, etc), but finds nothing to suggest he's anything other than a social worker trying to do what's best for his charges.
Percy becomes a semi-regular fixture at the Tower. At first it's just business, checking in on how Peter is doing and facilitating the foster care/adoption paperwork. Later it becomes something akin to friendship, with Percy being utterly unimpressed by Tony's fame but remarkably charmed by his inventions and philanthropic efforts. (He also comes to have strong feelings about the Rogues and their actions during the Civil War once he learns of them, helping Tony to see their betrayal for what it is. This alone makes him one of Rhodey and Pepper's favorite people.)
This goes on for quite some time - though I see this as happening post-CACW, we don't jump straight into the Infinity War, with there being several years wherein the Accords are ratified, the Rogues found and tried for their actions in the Civil War, and for the most part allowed to return to the Avengers on a probationary basis - until Thor finally arrives with news of Thanos' impending arrival.
Only Percy happens to be visiting when Thor arrives and the Avengers naturally have questions after Thor addresses him as Prince Perseus.
The truth of Percy's identity comes out in fits and starts (demigod son of Poseidon, saved the world a couple times, ascended to become God of Heroes, Natural Disasters, and Poison as well as Patron God of New York City; has been dating Apollo since he was fourteen; yes, is actually a social worker, albeit one who takes cases across the country to protect demigods and Enhanced), which is not helped by Thor (who can't help but comment on what he knows of Percy's heroics) or Apollo (who shows up after Percy texts an SOS but can't help but talk up his boyfriend either.)
The Infinity War still happens, albeit rather differently than in canon - perhaps Thanos turns out to be a disgruntled child or sibling of Gaia out for revenge, justifying Greek/Roman interference? But the details don't really matter as much as the identity reveal.
And... that's really all I have with regards to plot. But there should be a lot of character moments leading up to the reveal that hint at who Percy really is but which don't form a coherent narrative until the truth is revealed.
Bonuses include:
The softest, fluffiest romance possible for Apollo and Percy, with the pair more or less falling head over heels at first sight at the start of TTC, having their first kiss at the party at the end of the book, and dating throughout the rest of the Titan War. Apollo goes absolutely batshit insane when Percy goes missing at the start of HOO and breaks out of Olympus to crash the Senate meeting at the end of SoN and check on his boyfriend, and eventually gets made mortal for helping too much during the Giant War. The broad strokes of ToA occur with Percy fighting at his now-mortal boyfriend's side, and Percy ascends to godhood when Apollo regains his. There's some tension (Zeus is not happy about his firstborn son's choice of lover, fearing overthrow; Poseidon fears Apollo will end up breaking Percy's heart, but softens after Percy ascends and his chance of becoming a flower diminishes; many CHB campers think Percy's mad for dating a god, etc) but for the most part it should be as fluffy as circumstances allow.
Percy having been really obvious about his background, but in ways that seem reasonable ("How did you meet your boyfriend?" "I was at a really bad party when a friend ended up calling her brother to pick us up early. I fell in love with his car and then with him.") or like jokes ("Those sea turtles really seem to like you." "I like them too." "I guess they're kind of cute." "Excellent conversationalists too.") until the full truth comes out; and
Thor attempting to make up for blowing Percy's cover in dramatic (and hilarious) ways. This should include the gift of at least one native Asgardian water plant ("Dude, have you never heard of invasive species?") and end in a bakery's worth of Asgardian baked goods.
And that's all I have, though given the way this has been living rent-free in my head all week there may be more. As always feel free to adopt this bun, just link back if you do anything with it.

It’s been 7 years since Civil War and I still mourn for the Bucky Barnes story we should’ve gotten.
I mourn for how quickly they showed him integrated back into society after CATWS. One moment he’s almost killing his best friend... and the next moment he’s living on his own and seems just fine. Sure, he’s a little quiet and awkward and sad, but he’s mostly pretty normal. Outside of the first half of Civil War, there’s very little evidence at all that would lead anyone to believe Bucky used to be the world’s most feared assassin, who was trained and molded into the perfect weapon through unimaginable pain and psychological manipulation. This man spent the better part of his life as a ruthless, mindless killing machine programmed to do nothing more than follow orders. You don’t just walk away from that without being fundamentally and irreversibly psychologically altered. Even the removal of the trigger words wouldn’t change that.
To clarify, I’m not talking about his lingering feelings of guilt and sadness. I think Seb has done a great job with getting that part across at least. I’m talking about his behavior. About way he interacts with other people and how he handles situations. He doesn’t act like a formerly-brainwashed ex-assassin who was treated as less than human for literal decades and who, by all accounts, should have the most severe form of PTSD known to man.
I just don’t buy the Bucky we see post-CATWS and particularly post-Civil-War. I don’t buy that Bucky would be joking around and flirting and basically acting like Just Some Guy – a grumpy guy but still Just Some Guy – and his recent haircut sure isn’t helping the situation either. That he wouldn’t always be a little bit on edge, a little bit animal (kinda like the way we see him at the beginning of Civil War but then never again). That being in the heat of battle wouldn’t sometimes make him either shut down or completely snap and go into a violent fugue state where he subconsciously reverts back to the brutally efficient methods of the Winter Soldier (we almost got this in TFATWS but they couldn’t commit).
Now maybe he received some absolutely incredible therapy in Wakanda. Maybe it worked wonders on him! The problem is I don’t buy it because I never saw it. I never got to see him struggle to learn how to be a person again. I never got to see him fight back against the thing Hydra turned him into.
It just sucks because I love everything about the concept of Bucky and the Winter Soldier, but the parts they’ve chosen not to show or address are, in my opinion, the most interesting parts of his character. But more than that, the lack of follow through and disconnect between what he was and who he seems to be now makes it really hard for me to see him as a fully-realized person in canon. It’s like my brain registers perfectly who he was in CATFA/CATWS and even kinda sorta now in TFATWS, but there’s this giant chasm in between them that mentally feels like fuzzy static.
How long did it take him to fully shake off the brainwashing and conditioning? When did he start thinking of himself as a human being with agency again? Did he ever have to fight the desire to return to Hydra, the only thing he’s known for 70 years, or was it an easy choice? How long did it take him to start recovering his memories? Has he recovered all of them? Does he now remember everything that happened before and during his time at Hydra? How long did it take him to stop flinching at every sound and expecting Hydra to track him down? How long did it take him to relearn how to interact with people like a normal person? How did he afford food and shelter between CATWS and CACW? How and why did he end up in Romania? Did he travel there immediately after CATWS or did he live somewhere else first? Did he get actual therapy in Wakanda or did they just work their science-magic to remove the trigger words and send him on his way? Is the the soldier still in there? Does he still have to consciously stop himself from using deadly force every time he’s in a fight? Is that why he deliberately avoids carrying any weapons now?
I have so many questions.
Fortunately we have fic and fanon to help fill the void but we shouldn’t have to. Bucky Barnes is one of the most interesting and unique characters to ever exist. There’s so much good stuff to dig into here and it’s been wasted.
They squandered the original opportunity to explore this part of his character when they turned Cap 3 into an Iron Man film, a decision I will forever be mad about (fuck you RDJ/Tony for stealing Bucky’s movie), but they finally had the perfect chance to make up for that with TFATWS! Bucky was getting his own show (6 hours of content!), and with it, plenty of time to really dig into his psyche and lingering trauma! I had hoped to see him relapsing a bit and falling into old patterns. Or maybe being triggered by something and having a panic attack. Or even just talking about his time in Hydra and how it felt to be used like that and his struggles to regain his humanity afterwards (instead they fucking gave Hawkeye the emotional “I was a weapon” speech that Bucky rightfully deserved). But other than that opening nightmare, a few brief teasing lines from Zemo about the solider still being in there (which was never followed through on), and the shittiest excuse for “therapy” I’ve ever seen, we really got nothing.
From everything they’ve shown us, and particularly from the ending of TFATWS, it’s clear Marvel believes Bucky has already “healed” and there’s little left to discuss or explore and it makes me incredibly sad.

Just cause I know you have a thing for round numbers, I'll ask for 10, 20 or 30 (or all 3 if you please 😁)
Hey broken--bow! I DO love round numbers, lol! Here you go!
10. Top three favourite fic tropes.
Whump or H/C. Hands-down, my favorite (in case there was any question about that)
“we’re just fuck buddies, but not really” I never know what to call this one—I think it needs a good, pithy 1 or 2 word name.  But you get my gist.
self-sacrifice (IDK how much this one is a real trope, but for me it's hnnnggg, especially when paired with whump.
20. Do you work on a single project or many at the same time? How does that work for you?  Mainly just one; I’m terrible at dividing my focus on multiple fic.  If I get an idea I feel compelled to write while I’m writing one fic, I usually end up setting the first one aside to focus on the second.  Right now, though, I’m trying really hard to work on two at once because I have an auction fic with an end-of-the-year deadline, but I just got distracted by a whumptober prompt and started writing on it.  I’ll let you know how that goes!  😅
30. Describe a fic that almost happened, but then it didn't.  I drafted a good bit of a post CACW AmeriHawk in Wakanda fic about 4 years ago.  The working title was “Spinning Wheels” and it was basically a slow burn, where Clint and Steve start sleeping together mostly out of boredom because they’re stuck in Wakanda with nothing much to do. But Clint’s still hung up on Coulson (who’s off with his shiny new team), and Steve’s hung up on Bucky (who’s in deep freeze and also not gay, so it’s unrequited) so it’s never going to go anywhere, but then they catch feelings.  Except I never could decide if I wanted them to catch feelings or not because part of me couldn’t let go of the idea of C/C because the idea of Phil leaving Clint in the dust to be with his new team just made me sad and part of me wanted to turn the fic into a C/C fix-it.  I had two separate endings drafted and I liked them both. I wanted to fully flesh it out because I really liked the parts I drafted, but I got stuck where to take it and then I moved on to “Falling Off the Face of the Earth” and got hypnotized by WinterHawk and I just never went back to it.
Thanks for the ask, @broken--bow !

Maybe it's just me, but if I could retweak CACW, I'd have everyone on Team Cap escape the airport battle and make it to Siberia with Steve and Bucky.
I don't know where to start with what I'd change, but I sure can try! l'm nothing if not opinionated!
Thinking chronologically through the movie, I'd have Steve shoulder the blame for what happened in Lagos and PROTECT Wanda better from the backlash she faced. What he told her after the fact while she was being torn apart by the media was true! He really should have noticed what Rumlow was up too, he acted like this was the first time an enemy had tried to trip him up in the field and buy time or to get the upper hand. Wanda did not go into that mission ready for that level of combat. She saved Steves life and SO MANY MORE people would have died if that size blast went off on the ground. Of course, in a PERFECT world, the vest never would have gone off, and nobody would have died, and there would be no backlash.
Next, I'd keep Tony from folding on his team and agreeing to the accords so fast. I get the whole guilty conscience thing, I do, but he folded fast and gave up. Remember Iron Man 2 when he played class clown in the courtroom when the government wanted his suits? Remember his argument that he and the suits were one and the same and couldn't be separated? Where was that Tony when he agreed to the accords without talking to anyone? They should have talked away from Ross as a group. Tony should have given them a heads-up instead of a lecture. In the end, I agree more than anything with the point Natasha made in her argument about the Accords. Staying together is more important than how we stay together.
Signing was the best thing to do PRE bombing at the UN and there was no way for them to know that the bombing was going to happen. Apply the same stipulations to those most at risk of being unfairly persecuted by the Accords (off the top of my head Bruce with his tendency to Hulk out) as you did to Wanda (unbeknownst to her). Stay at the compound until things can be amended. It's not ideal, but it's still a better outlook than forced retirement!
POST bombing not signing is the move. There's really no way to determine what would have happened if nobody signed aside from the Avengers being officially "disbanded" in the eyes of the governments of the world. Would the Accords still have been signed? Probably, in order to keep other groups from forming or the Avengers from just coming back, so the bombing could still have happened if nobody signed. Bucky would still be framed, and Steve would still be dead set on helping him.
I think as far as the movie went, this part was fair. Natasha tried to talk Steve down but clearly wanted to help. Sam was with Steve because of course he was. Who knows if Tony would have helped Steve otherwise, if nobody had signed. I can't think of a reason he wouldn't at this point, if they decided the whole team was going. Things get sticky when the group (Steve, Sam, Bucky, and T'challa) are detained, though.
At this point, Tony is too high strung to listen to Steve about Bucky being framed. Natasha is maybe reachable, but Steve doesn't get the chance. Natasha is really always ready to flip throughout all of this until she eventually just does. This was the last chance for Tony to listen to Steve, and I would have had him listen in a perfect world. It could have changed how Tony reacted later on.
After Zemo triggers The Winter Soldier and everyone fights him, had Tony listened to Steve things would have been different. Everyone would be a criminal, even if Tony changed his mind again and hopped back to the side of the accords, I think he should have at least given Steve the time of day before assembling a team against him.
Onto the HARDEST PART OF THE MOVIE TO WATCH, Clint "rescuing" Wanda. This to me serves as a testament to Tony having that guilty conscience and not knowing how to make amends. Tony set Wanda up at the compound to keep her home and safe. She had no real reason to want to leave. She was being ostracized in the media, probably not comfortable alone out on American soil yet, and PERFECTLY content to be home alone with Vision. They've very obviously gotten close but not labeled anything by this point, that was clear before WandaVision gave us that glimpse of post AoU bonding over Home Improvement, but still. They had something of a thing going on, and Tony did what he could to make her comfortable from afar. Sure, not telling her "Hey Wanda stay home" and being sneaky and telling Vision to just occupy her there is a weird manipulative way of doing what he did, but since when has he been good at showing how he cares? And how does one show a teenager that holds you responsible to some extent for orphaning her and could extend it to being responsible for creating the thing that killed her brother, her only family left, that you care about her wellbeing? He didn't do it in a good way, but he tried to keep it off her shoulders.
Steve sending Clint to get her is the more disturbing part to me. You are pulling him from his own family to use as emotional kindling for Wanda. She trusts Clint, he helped her gain some confidence in Sokovia and help fight Ultron. She looks up to him. Pit him against Vision, why don't you. Because that's fair? Make her choose. Honestly, I'd let Wanda and Vision stay at the compound. It would prevent her time served on the raft wearing a literal Shock Collar??!!? Not to mention her time on the run after being broken out of the raft, which lead to losing a life she could have had all along with Vision, something she CLEARLY wanted more than anything. Oh, and also, she wouldn't feel the need to put Vision a mile into the ground to escape.
As far as Leipzig goes, not having Wanda and Vision there prevents untold damage (totaled cars, damaged parking structures, airplane damage, air traffic control tower destruction, Rhodey would still be able to walk??!) Scott would still have broken a lot of stuff, but it would be less overall damage. If nobody signed, there would be no fight. With the situation as it was, though, again, I agree with Natasha. Let Steve and Bucky go. I'd probably have her trap T'challa in rubble without killing or harming him and have her go to Siberia, too.
Once we hit Siberia, things get even trickier with Tony. Finding out The Winter Soldier had killed his parents didn't have to make him go as AWOL as he did. Bucky was clearly sorry, and also, clearly, it wasn't Bucky as he was doing it. If I were Tony or could sway him, I'd have him follow every thread about The Winter Soldier and find out WHO ordered the hit and WHY instead of nearly killing myself attacking someone who had no choice blindly. I would have them detain Zemo. Tony is allowed to be upset, but not that unhinged. Detain Zemo, follow the trail he did to even discover what happened on that night, and punish the right people. Clear Buckys name, get everyone out of the raft, the end!
Idk what this post turned into, or if this is what you wanted when you dropped into my asks, but boy, did I give you an answer 🤣😅
It's been a while since I've had an ask, and I love them! If you made it to the bottom of this, no matter who you are, and wanna pick my brain, shoot me an ask! I'll rant any day!

what if carter was pregnant with quentin's child in the ikau?
((well, truthfully, she'd get an abortion. Carter is not fit mentally, and debatably physically, to raise a child, and she knows it. Especially during the time she hooks up with Quentin, seeing as it's going to be around post-aou to cacw, which is her lowest point in the ikau. She doesn't want to be a parent, and she doesn't want to go through with a pregnancy.
in general, though, Carter having kids in the ikau is... pretty slim, and even then, she'd only be willing to adopt or have a surrogate. She'd absolutely need to be in a stable relationship after she's had time to go to therapy and get a good start on healing, and it'd really would need to be something brought up by her partner versus her, since she wouldn't mention it. And the reason why she wouldn't have any kids is because her body has been through a lot, so she's absolutely not fond of the idea of putting her body through even more stress, and she doesn't know what the serum in her reactor would do if she was pregnant. It could end up hurting her and/or the fetus/baby, it could somehow give the baby abilities, or it could do nothing. It's just... not something she's willing to risk under any circumstances.
anyway, going back to if she was pregnant with Quentin's child, I'm gonna entertain the idea of her keeping the baby because a) why not, and b) I've entertained the idea in a few asks already sdfgjhdfsh - so! the way I've written it so far is that Carter didn't know she was pregnant until after she and Quentin had their falling out. She tried telling him because she panicked and didn't really know what to do, but because things were messy between them, he wanted nothing to do with her, and she was reluctant to push. So, he didn't know, and she stopped trying to reach out to him. I... honestly, I feel like she just. bounces from the Avengers without warning. Seeing how this would be post-cacw, she... really doesn't see a reason to stay to begin with. She doesn't trust the others, more so than before given everything that had happened, although if I include their battle, she would stick around long enough to blackmail Ross into getting the Avengers out of the RAFT and expose him to destroy the Accords before disappearing. She doesn't want to be Iron Man, she wants nothing to do with him, and is... frankly, scared. She doesn't know what to do or where to go, but she doesn't want to stay there (and, a big thing to remember, is that she's still suffering from the aftermath of Obadiah's abuse, and still believes what he told her about the others not caring about her - something that, unfortunately, was only proven in her eyes with the whole thing with Steve), so she just... leaves. No goodbye, no note, no nothing. She's just... gone with some of her belongings. And, honestly, I think a part of her would be ashamed, and want to leave to avoid judgment. Though, I do wanna say, she did leave behind a large sum of money to keep the Avengers paid and all that jazz - she still took a good amount with her, but... she has a lot of money, so, financially, everyone is fine all around.
this would definitely be the thing that pushes her to get help, although she knows, realistically, she's not going to have enough time to get her shit in order before her baby is born. She can at least get a start on it, but she's gonna need to work hard to keep it up to get better, and she will. She's terrified of doing what Obadiah had done, and will work hard to better herself so her child has a good childhood. Parenthood is still going to be incredibly hard for her, especially considering she removed herself from a support system she didn't realize she had, but... she'd get the hang of it, and would be a good parent to her kid. She'll mess up, but no one's perfect, and she means well. She'll learn from her mistakes, and do everything she can to give her child a good life. If one of the Avengers were to find her, Carter would certainly be standoffish, and would really just... want them gone, really. She wouldn't be hostile or mean or anything, but just... withdrawn, and clearly not wanting to engage with them just then. That could change later on when she has a chance to fully settle down with her child and get her head on straight by progressing further in therapy, but I honestly don't really know how that'd all go.
however, with all that said and while her leaving is my knee-jerk belief, I do think there's still a chance she'd stick around somewhat. She'd probably move out of the compound into her own place (maybe an apartment?), but there's a chance she'll still at least stay in touch with the Avengers. Or, what feels more likely, is that she'd disappear, start therapy, and her therapist would encourage her to get back in touch with them, and would help her realize they're not her enemies, and that they do care about her. It'll be a hard pill for her to swallow, especially when she has to admit she's pregnant, but that's another possibility of what would happen. She'd still be awkward and standoffish at first, but she'd have a support system still, and would slowly warm up to them as she does begin to see her therapist is right.
now, regardless of what would happen, Carter wouldn't tell anyone who the father is. Quentin, at that point, will probably be unknown to the Avengers (possibly known to Happy and Rhodey, though, if Pepper happens to mention him or they know of his project at SI), but she just... doesn't want him involved, and doesn't want to talk about him, especially when she realizes their relationship was far from healthy. Maybe one of them could get her to open up about Quentin if she grows close enough to them? but it'd really depend on the circumstance and who it is!
but, yeah, in general, it's just not gonna happen in the ikau ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Carter won't have any pregnancy scares when with Quentin, either, btw - it's just something I don't particularly feel like adding in.

Sam Wilson x Wife! Reader
Fandom: The MCU
Summary: When the remaining members of Team Cap need a place to lay low, Sam offers a solution
Warnings: Being away from family, mentions of CACW events, Sam, Steve and Nat are on the run, comfort, fluff
“We need someplace to lay low.” Natasha spoke up, breaking the silence in the quinjet. “We’ve been going for too long, we need some sort of break.”
Being on the run from the government was not easy. You never knew when you might be found, or what will happen to you. It can especially hurt when you have a home, but you don’t want to risk anything happening to the people you care about.
That was Sam’s current dilemma.
“I might have a place.” He spoke up. Steve and Nat looked at him. “I’m not sure if they’ll risk us coming, but I can try getting into contact with them, and ask.”
“And you’re sure they won’t give us away?” Steve asked.
“I’m sure.”
It was a calm day in Y/L/N Ceramics. It was a Sunday afternoon, and not many customers were coming in, which meant Y/N had a lot of time to work on orders, restock the shelves, and work on new creations to put on said shelves.
Y/N was grabbing herself a glass of water when the store phone started ringing, so she placed the glass on the table and picked it up.
“Y/L/N Ceramics, homemade crafts made on location in Delacroix, Louisiana, this is Y/N, how can I help you?”
The line was ingrained in her head at this point. A call on the work phone, and she’s saying it as soon as she picks up. Most often when she picked up the phone, it was someone with questions about one of her products or the store, an occasional wrong number, or yet another Karen calling with complaints that were in no way justified, but nothing could have prepared her for who was on the other end of the line.
“Hey baby.” Y/N could recognize that voice from a mile away.
“Sam?”
“Yeah.”
He sounded exhausted, not that she blamed him. Of course, she knew he was on the run, it was all over the news, it would be more surprising if he wasn’t exhausted.
“Not that I’m not happy to hear from you, but why are you calling, isn’t this risky?”
“I’m using a burner phone, it’s not going to be tracked.” Sam assured her. “And you’d never give us away.”
“Of course not.” She said. “I’d do anything to keep you safe.”
“I know you would.” She could hear him smiling. “That’s kinda why I’m calling.”
“Hm?”
“Our house is still off the radar, right?”
“Yeah, still just us and our families.” Y/N said, nodding. “And Fury, of course.”
“Would it be okay for us to come stay for a while?” Sam asked, hesitantly. “We need a place to lay low, and I think this might be our best option.”
“Of course you can.” Y/N promised. “But I think it might be safest to wait until after I’ve closed for you to get there, and unless you have your keys with you, you won’t be able to get in either way.”
“When do you close?”
“At four, so I’ll be home around 4:30.”
“We’ll try to be there around 5 then.” Sam said. “But you know, under these circumstances…”
“I understand, it’s fine.” Y/N said. “You’ll get there when you get there.”
“I can’t wait to see you.”
“Neither can I.” Y/N smiled. “She’s gonna be overjoyed when she sees you.”
“That’ll be fun.” Sam smiled at the thought. “I’ll see you later baby.”
“See you then.”
“Where the hell is this place we’re going to?” Nat asked from the backseat of the car.
“Off the grid.” Sam said, driving slowly down the gravel road. “We’re almost there.”
A few minutes later, a house came into view between the trees. It was decently large, with pale yellow walls, white corner posts, and a large deck stretching around the front and down one side.
Sam got out of the car, Steve and Nat following. As they got closer, voices could be heard from around the corner of the house.
Steve and Nat exchanged a confused look when Sam visibly lit up, and moved faster onto the deck and rounded the corner.
On a porch swing sat a woman and a girl. The woman was holding a book, reading to the girl who was snuggled into her side.
“‘…the Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarten yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting.’” The y/h/c woman read aloud from the book. “‘Her eyes lingered for a moment on Neville’s cloak, which was fastened under his left ear, and on Ron’s smudged nose. Harry nervously tried to flatten his hair.’ They don’t seem very well prepared, do they?” She broke character to ask, and the little girl giggled in response.
“No, they don’t.” She said.
“You finally managed to introduce her to Harry Potter, did you?” Sam spoke up, making them both turn to look at him.
“Daddy!” The little girl exclaimed, jumping from her seat and running at Sam, who easily caught her in his arms.
“Hi baby girl.” He said quietly, his arms wrapping tightly around her and lifting her up.
“I missed you.”
“I missed you too, honey.”
Now Steve and Nat were even more confused. Since when did Sam have a daughter?
“You got here earlier than I thought you would.” Y/N remarked, walking towards her husband and daughter.
“Forgive me for wanting to see you.” Sam teased, and Y/N smacked his arm in response.
“Welcome home.” She whispered, pressing a kiss to his cheek.
“Thank you, it’s good to be back.” He replied, setting his daughter back on the ground.
“Gonna explain what’s going on here?” Nat said from behind them, and Sam turned around.
“Yeah, Steve, Nat, this is my wife, Y/N.” Y/N raised her hand in a wave, her other arm around Sam’s waist. “And this is Riley.”
The small girl suddenly looked a lot shyer, sticking close to her parents' sides, and timidly waving at the two Avengers.
“I got this place set up and off the grid when I officially joined the team, so hardly anyone knows about this place.” Sam explained.
“At least not anyone that’d be out to get you.” Y/N added. “But you must be tired. We have two guest rooms upstairs, you can freshen up, rest a little, and I’ll get started on dinner.”
“Sounds amazing sweetheart.” Sam said, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “Come on, I’ll show you to the rooms.” He then said, taking Steve and Nat with him inside.
It was much later that day. After they had finished dinner, the group had moved to the living room.
Sam had heard Natasha claim that she wasn’t the best with kids, but after Steve had asked, the two gladly listened as Riley told them all about what she liked to do in her free time, her favorite school subjects, and anything in between. Now she was cuddled up in her dad’s lap, sound asleep. Sam had so far refused to carry her to bed, very content with the cuddling, and despite knowing Riley would sleep better in bed, Y/N couldn’t bring herself to separate the two. She let them have their moment.
“So this is where you’re going when you take so many weeks off at a time?” Steve asked, and Sam smiled.
“Yeah, most of the time.” He said. “I take every opportunity I get to come down here. Not as much as I’d like, but there’s not much I can do.”
“You’re here for the important days, and whenever you can in between.” Y/N said, her head resting on Sam’s shoulder. “You know we’re always happy when you’re here.”
“How long have you been together?” Natasha asked.
“We met in 2003, a little over a year before I joined the AirForce.” Sam explained. “It was a hard long-distance, but we made it work.”
“And then you proposed almost right when you came home.” Y/N continued. “Got married in 2007, in the middle of Louisiana summer.”
“That was really smart.” Sam said sarcastically.
“I can imagine.” Nat chuckled. “Did anyone pass out from heat exhaustion?” She joked.
“Thankfully not.” Y/N said. “I thought I was going to, before the ceremony, but I think that was just the nerves getting to me.”
“Most likely.” Sam said. “And then we had this little rascal, in 2010.”
Sam rubbed his hand over his daughter’s back, and she snuggled further into his embrace, making Sam’s smile grow.
“Then I met you and shit got real way too fast.” Sam said, looking at Steve, who chuckled in response.
“Yeah, sorry about that.”
Sam shrugged. “It’s all worth it, I think.” He said. “If anything I get to make the world safer for Riley.”
“Speaking of which, I think we need to get her up to bed.” Y/N said after a moment, standing from the couch.
“You don’t mind if we go, right?” Sam checked with his friends, also standing, Riley still in his arms.
“Of course not.” Steve said. “We’ll be good down here.”
As soon as Y/N had shut Riley’s bedroom door, Sam had pulled her into his chest, and she practically melted into his embrace. Since they arrived, they hadn’t gotten a proper, quiet moment to themselves, so by now they were both in desperate need of it.
“I am so tired.” Sam breathed, making Y/N chuckle.
“I don’t blame you, honestly.” She said.
“I’m sorry for all of this.” Sam said, looking at her. “This whole thing’s created such a mess, I don’t think I’ll be able to visit as often now, but the last thing I want is risking something happening to you.”
“I understand.” She said. “I might not like it too much, but I get it. And I know you’d never intentionally do anything to hurt us.”
“You know, Clint and Scott both got away with house arrest, I’m thinking I might see if I can’t work something out with that too.”
“I get a feeling you’d be very restless.” Y/N told him frankly.
“Maybe so, but I’d be here, I’d be safe.” Sam replied. “I can figure something out. I can help you with the shop if you teach me.”
“If that’s what you want, of course I can.” Y/N smiled. “But let’s put a pin in it for now, say goodnight to Steve and Natasha, and go to bed. It’s my turn to have you all to myself.”
Sam smiled as he brought her face closer to his, their noses brushing against eachother.
“Yes Mrs. Wilson.”

Fic Roundup (up to 9/26/21)
I'm gonna start collecting fics I've read recently to recommend them, because making trope lists takes too long and many fics fall by the wayside. Let me know if you like this new format!
The fandoms in this list are as follows: Marvel (SamBucky, HTP, SpideyPool, WinterHawk, WinterIron, Stony, Stucky, SpiderShield), DCU (Bane/Blake), Inception (Arthur/Eames), Teen Wolf (Sterek).
A * signifies a particular favorite (though I love all these fics)
Marvel
Sam/Bucky
double back by flowermasters (E, 12K, Post-Endgame, Time Loop, Time Travel)
Sam gets stuck in a time loop. In 1943.
Things could be worse, but they could certainly be better.
Companion piece here: quick time
I'll explain everything to the geese by napricot (Post-Endgame, E, 50K, Sam can talk to birds)
Bucky is so competent that it hurts my feelings is not a rational complaint to have about a person, and yet, after a year of being Captain America and partnering up with Bucky for the new and improved, post-Blip Avengers, that’s kinda how Sam’s feeling.
It’s not great. It maybe leads to Sam making some rash, ill-advised decisions like claiming he has a previously undisclosed superpower, and then getting caught in a web of lies when he ends up actually developing that surprisingly inconvenient superpower. Talking to birds had seemed like a harmless superpower, but it turns out that birds have a lot of opinions, and they don’t hesitate to tell Sam about them, especially when it comes to his supposedly subpar courting skills. Which is ridiculous, because Sam isn’t courting Bucky. Right?
Rumlow/Bucky
**blueprints for a better world series by itallstartedwithdefenestration @astralhux (CATWS, Post-CATWS, Noncon, E, 115K, Dark Main Character)
When Pierce discovers the asset is no longer capable of getting himself hard during recreational use, he tells Rumlow to figure out what the problem is, and to fix it. The solution turns out to be more complicated than anyone expected.
I can't recommend this series enough
Peter/Wade
*Dead Men Walking series by doctorestranged @lazystrawberrymilkshakes (E, 235K, Identity Porn, Slow Burn)
When a series of murders take place, Peter Parker goes undercover in Sister Margaret’s to get intel on Tony Stark’s prime suspect: Deadpool. Peter goes in hoping to get enough information so that Spider-Man can save the day, but like everything in Peter’s life, it becomes a bit more complicated than that and it soon becomes apparent that he might not be the best fit for the job.
All About Chemistry by TwiceBakedPotato @sedatedkoala (No Powers AU, M, CNTW, 74K, Teacher-Student Relationship, Slow Build)
After serving his 20 years in the Marine Corps, Wade Wilson is cashing in his GI Bill and going back to college. He feels like the old man on campus, but that doesn't matter. He likes his classes. He likes learning. And he especially likes his Chemistry professor with the messy brown hair.
Clint/Bucky
Making Me A Habit by Kangofu_CB @kangofu-cb (No Powers AU, T, 20K, Pet Store, Slow Burn, Pining, Misunderstandings)
Bucky is a disabled vet struggling with reintegrating into civilian life. He has a routine and a rhythm, and he doesn't like to let anything - big or small - disrupt it. That all changes the day Bucky finds himself inside CATastrophe, the local pet rescue, recovering from a panic attack in the back room of the shop.
He’s used to walking by the place, not visiting, but the next thing Bucky knows, he’s hanging signs and being used as a climbing tree for a bunch of freshly-acquired kittens. And he just...keeps going back. First for the kittens, then for the disaster shop owner who rescues actual kittens from actual trees and teaches archery as a side-gig, and eventually because he’s hopelessly in love.
(Clint was in love before Bucky ever walked in the door.)
*Nameless by AvaKelly (Post-CATWS, M, 101K, Time Travel, Time Loop, Slow Burn)
A gun is pointed at him before he can even move from his position, the Soldier's metal arm steady in its aim. Clint sighs.
"Nemo," Clint says. "It's tattooed on your wrist, right here," he lifts his right hand and taps his left index finger where his palm ends.
The Soldier's eyes widen. "How do you know this?"
"I put it there."
Glitter, G-Strings and Other Mission Hazards by flawedamythyst @flawedamythyst (T, 16K, Undercover, Stripper Clint)
“Which is why you need me to shake my booty for cash,” said Clint.
“Precisely,” said Coulson. “You’re the only agent we have who wouldn’t need additional training in the skills of an exotic dancer to take on the mission, and we want to get someone in there as soon as possible.”
Clint nodded, shutting the file. “Okay, awesome. I’ll dig out my sequined g-string.”
“You’ll have full access to requisition any costumes you might need,” said Coulson.
A mission requires Bucky to be Clint's back-up as he goes undercover as a stripper, which gets more difficult with every new costume he comes out in.
Paternal Error by EVVS @skylarkevanson (Post-CATWS, T, 33K, Kid Fic, Established Relationship)
Bucky has never once thought of being a parent. Not since the Winter Solider happened.
Until he falls in love with Clint Barton. And that idiot just keeps collecting children for his flock.
Now Bucky has to pretend like he's good at parenting.
Bucky/Tony
Forms of Love by bear_bell (Post-CACW, E, 33K, Split Personalities)
Months after the Avengers' dispute in Germany, the team returns to the US and moves back into the tower. As always, everyone pretends that nothing happened. Tony is just fine with this. He's used to pretending, and he'll be damned if he lets any of them see him flinch.
Tony's the bad guy, after all. He's used to it. He's fine with it. He's good at it.
Only now, there's something far worse loitering around the tower - The Winter Soldier. No one notices the guy at first, but when they do, Tony figures that he should have the soldier's back.
Birds of a feather should flock together, and the bad guys should start a book club.
Steve/Tony
While You Were Sleeping by betheflame @betheflame (No Powers AU, M, 65K, While You Were Sleeping AU)
It's been years since Steve Grant Rogers Drysdale has spoken to his twin, Ransom. So it was quite a shock when he was summoned to a hospital and found out that Ransom was in a coma.
Even more shocking? That Ransom is engaged. To Tony Stark.
Steve/Bucky
The Road Goes Ever On And On by PipGraham (Omegaverse AU, M, Noncon, Graphic Violence, 20K, Road Trip, Pre-Serum Steve, Past Domestic Violence)
When Brock's continued domestic abuse puts not only Steve's life in danger, but also that of his unborn pup, he flees into the night with just a small backpack of clothes and almost no money to his name.
Steve quickly runs into trouble as he tries to embark on a 3-day cross-country bus journey back home to New York City.
He meets a kind veteran when he most needs a helping hand.
Just Words by LadyRazzle (crimegimp) @ladyrazzle (Pre-CATFA, Soulmate AU, T, 2K, Fluff)
Inspired by that now legendary post: "soulmate AU where you wake up on your 18th birthday with the first words your soulmate will say to you tattooed on your body so you’ll know them when you meet them." Well what if they appear the moment you turn 18, rather than just the day? And what if by the time you turn 18, you'd already fallen in love?
Bucky wasn’t eager to discover what the words said. He already knew what he wanted them to say. He always had.
Peter/Steve
Forgetting It's There by spinstitcher (stygian) (NR, 8K, Crack, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Identity Porn)
“You’re Captain America,” he blurts out.
“What?” says Captain America, looking a little wide-eyed. He casts a nervous glance at the girl at the counter – he has nothing to worry about there, she’s rocking out to her iPod and could care less what they’re talking about – and says, “No, uh, Steve, it’s just, I’m Steve.”
“Right,” says Peter, and then because his brain-to-mouth filter had apparently been completely destroyed in the fight on Oscorp Tower: “Hey, your butt really is as tight as it looks on TV.”
DCU
Bane/Blake
7 Deadly Ass(as)sins by teacuphuman @teacuphuman09 (AU, E, 23K, BDSM)
Bane and Barsad own a sex shop and John needs a job.
Straws by Menirva (Bane/Blake/Barsad, AU, E, 38K, BDSM)
John works in a smoothie shop.
He has a knack, a second sense if you will, for being able to look at a person and know what they're going to order. It's not the most spectacular gift in the world but he likes being able to figure people out and he's never wrong.
Except for this scruffy asshole who is clearly just ordering the wrong thing to fuck with him.
How is he even finishing an extra-large?
Inception
Aurthur/Eames
Rough Trade by Whisky (whiskyrunner) @whiskyrunner (AU, E, 23K, Internalized Homophobia)
Arthur is an investment banker. He is professional and efficient. He's a halfway decent cook. He's totally independent and has been since the age of eighteen. Maybe he's tired all the time because he works about ninety hours a week which is twice what normal people do, but he's rich and he's competent at his job. He's almost thirty, and already a success.
And there are some things Arthur is not. For instance: Arthur is not gay.
Lucky by earlgreytea68 @earlgreytea68 (M, 37K, Kid fic)
Arthur finds a baby.
Teen Wolf
Stiles/Derek
Cut to the Bone by standinginanicedress (Omegaverse AU, E, 112K, Secret Relationship, Enemies to Lovers kinda)
“Not that it’s any of your god damn business, but my name is Stiles. Do you need something?”
The alpha grins. All teeth, shiny white, straight as an arrow. He’s got this sculpted perfection to him that Stiles is sure has worked on all the omegas he’s ever encountered before, but Stiles stands his ground and narrows his eyes. “A date.”
Stiles looks him up and down, slowly, from the black shoes on his feet, to his uniform khakis and blazer littered with pins, to his face. He frowns, makes a face, and says, “pass.”
Cornerstone by Vendelin (Human AU, E, 83K, Marine Derek, Blind Stiles, Friends to Lovers)
Suffering from PTSD, ex-Marine Derek Hale moves back to Beacon Hills to open a bookshop and find a calmer life. That’s where he meets Stiles, completely by accident. Stiles is talkative, charming and curious. Somehow, despite the fact that he’s blind, he’s able to read Derek like no one else.
Stand Fast in Your Enchantments by DevilDoll, Rahciach (AU, Graphic Violence, E, 76K, Captivity, Feral Derek)
"Stiles knew damn well what a pissed-off wolf sounded like, and every hair on the back of his neck was telling him that somewhere in this room was a very pissed-off werewolf." An AU in which Derek is feral, Stiles is magical, and they eat a lot of fast food.
The Payoff Pitch by Leslie_Knope (Sports AU, E, 83K, Coming Out, Friends to Lovers)
Derek is on the cusp of his second season with the LA Dodgers, and as the reigning runner-up Rookie of the Year, the pressure’s on him to become the team’s star pitcher and lead them to the playoffs for the first time in five years. He’s trying to deal with the burden of expectations and really has zero desire to spend any extra time or energy on anything that isn’t baseball.
But then he meets Stiles.

you said that you like receiving these asks so I wanted to ask a question (from a longtime lurker): why ironwidow? why not another ship? I mean we have like dozens of ships in the mcu, canon and non-canon, that have more time together on screen so why them? I think you have a gorgeous way of putting their relationship into words so I want to hear your thoughts...I ship them because their whole story in the mcu has the potential to be so damn romantic like honestly they started everything!!! It was them!!! Together!!! and then it ended with them together
I hope I phrased this well, I don't mean to come off as rude, I really like your works :)
hi anon! yes, i absolutely love these asks, and haha lurk away but always feel free to come chat! you phrased this perfectly well, not rude at all, don't worry! <3
so this is a really interesting question, and i'm going to answer it more personally than objectively, if you don't mind? though i think there are a lot of reasons that ironwidow makes sense like, narratively and character-arc-wise, i feel like i talk about that a lot.
okay, so the first thing you should know is that the first marvel movie i saw was avengers 1. no context. i saw it twice in theater because i was so in love. so it was always going to be two people in that movie, bc i fall quick and hard lol.
i tend to be a shipper of small moments - even in my bigger, more mainstream ships, i like to find the little moments - and honestly, nat and tony had so many little inside jokes in avengers 1. maybe equal with clintasha, which i relegated to brotp quickly because clint gave me married!dad energy. not that i anticipated aou! i just felt like he was meant to be the dad of the group. but yeah, the 'miss me, agent romanoff?' and the shrug at 'genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist' and 'i don't see how that's the party' and GOD 'c'mon stark' which might've been the deal-sealer. obviously, they had met before, and though i love pepper, the established relationship, girlfriend-of-the-hero trope does nothing for me. pepper was created for tony. natasha has always stood on her own.
i was also struck by one particular commonality that i think i've talked about: tony and natasha were the only ones who really wanted the avengers to happen in avengers 1. like, the team for the team's sake. clint = to back up nat, revenge; thor = loki's his brother; bruce = pretty much corralled by tony, reluctant af; steve = this one's harder, but he didn't show that faith in the team dynamic that tony/nat did. natasha's speech to clint - "we gotta stop him" ... "now you sound like you" "but you don't" ... i've been compromised" i've always interpreted that as her sudden need to be a part of this team - her ability to remain objective, alone, stoic - compromised. she wants this. tony's obvious - his relentless hope in bruce, that nat/clint/steve will follow him, he was putting these pieces together. so why not take it a step further? maybe they were the only ones who needed someone else who understood and saw the potential in a so called ticking time bomb.
that kind of love can fade for me, in a ship - but i watched the other movies, saw im2 and the press for it, and love love loved the ironwidow. i started writing fics around then. then i took a short break, but cacw broke me because the im2 parallels were right there. then, i got serious about writing fix-its for them, especially when i didn't really find the kind of fic i wanted to read when i was in pain after seeing that movie (i.e., the post-cacw tensions where either tony was the villain of the mcu or natasha needed to grovel on her knees for tony to forgive her). personally, i get really into fandoms where i feel like i can add value to a ship, and i felt like i could bring something new, good or not, to the table.
so yeah, some combination of all of that. and you're absolutely right about them starting and ending the mcu, but that was more the cherry on top for me!

Level of Steve’s awareness during the 2 years post CACW:
Steve spending those 2 years knowing he hurt Tony badly and has essentially exiled himself as penance, knowing Tony will never willingly see him again unless the world is ending, beating himself up all the while.
or!
Steve spending those 2 years on the run, knowing that while he hurt Tony he’s still hopeful that things will work out and is just waiting it out, only to discover the full depths of how badly Tony is still hurt once Tony tears into him during EG?
Ohhh 👀 I feel like both? I 100% believe Steve thinks he burned every bridge between himself and Tony with that lie, like he's fully aware that there's no way back from that, even before it came to a physical fight which was the final nail in the coffin (on that note: who tf thought of this fight??? It would've been so much more powerful to have Tony walk away from Steve!!! @Russos count your fucking days)
BUT I also think that Steve knows Tony and he work like a dream as teammates even if they don't work otherwise and I fully believe he banked on someday being able to come home when the world needed the Avengers back together!! So yeah, he knew he messed up big time, but I do think in some ways he hoped to find common ground again with Tony in fighting an enemy bc that's the one thing where they're actually completely in sync!!! (sexy as hell of them, ngl)
AND (sorry this is getting long) I don't think he's surprised at all by the depth of Tony's hurt, he's well aware of what he did, but I genuinely think he was just not prepared for Tony to let it all out (in front of everyone no less!!!) and rip him a new one in that scene in EG LOL
Like he was like "Ok....uh....we gotta fight Thanos so haha so let bygones be bygones :))))))" and I don't even hold it against him?? I get where he's coming from and it's 100% in line with his personality. I just think it's hilarious af because what did he think? That Tony would just swallow everything down and get on with his life like nothing happened????? Nahhhh you'll sit down and hear what Tony's gotta say to you my man

First off I wanted to thank you for feeding us with all of the tfatws critiques lately, and I hope we're not annoying you with all the asks you've been getting about it recently. It's been really great to know that I'm not the only one with issues with the show and your posts are always super insightful to read.
The entire way that the writers handled Zemo in the show makes me want to punch myself in the face. It’s so OOC for Bucky to release him under any circumstance. The writers really expected me to buy into rebranding him as a likable anti hero when he tore the Avengers apart, retraumatized Bucky, and ruined Team Caps lives. They literally cared more about trying to make Zemo likable than they did addressing the trauma that he inflicted on Bucky. He violated Bucky in the same way that HYDRA did and shows now remorse for it. It’s hardly even mentioned and they put more weight on Zemo forgiving Bucky (“I hold no grudges against you for what you thought you had to do” which, what? I don’t even understand what he’s forgiving Bucky for or even talking about here) than Bucky forgiving Zemo--which by the way, Bucky is under zero obligation to do and frankly I wouldn’t even want him to. We need to stop telling people that they need to forgive their abusers in order to move on. Yes, for some people it works. But for others it doesn’t and both are valid forms of healing.
Bucky should have shot him in the face.
Sorry this is so long lol, I’m just really mad.
Thanks for the ask! I have to say I'm getting really amazing asks these days so it's all you guys inspiring me with interesting thoughts!
I have a feeling this is going to get long because this is something that I have Strong Feelings about, so I'm going to tackle it in two parts.
Zemo
I really want to talk about this guy because I think everyone's fallen for his new nonchalant charms, and while yes, it's got its moments but this manipulative sardonic rich white man trope where have we seen it before OH RIGHT TONY.
CACW Zemo was actually one of my favourite MCU villains. He had heart, he had intelligence, he had resolve. The only thing he didn't have was superpowers, but he plenty made up for it. He knew what he was doing was wrong, but he was driven to do it anyway, because the Avengers had ripped a void in his life and revenge was the only thing that could fill it. He had nothing left, so he had nothing to lose, and he was ready to go to any length to destroy the happiness that the Avengers had - that they had taken from him. And that felt real to me, yanno, more so than the 20 other villains who wanted to rule the universe. But he was still squarely a villain.
TFATWS Zemo is...just a mess of a caricature, honestly. His goal had been the Avengers because they were idolised beyond reproach - his entire arc was because Sokovia was destroyed but these American larrikins went on with their merry lives. There were some clunky dialogue about supremacy, but none of it really congealed. CACW Zemo would have agreed with the Flag Smashers’ fight against an organisation that was beyond accountability, TFATWS made him a baron who wanted to maintain the status quo, and then tried to tell us this guy is now an anti-hero…and I honestly have no comment about what we should be reading into that.
Bucky
The “I hold no grudge for what you thought you had to do” is top on my list of TFATWS lines that prove the scriptwriter believes Bucky is in the wrong for everything. I cannot find an adequate interpretation of this line that does not paint Bucky as the villain in their relationship, when it’s Zemo who did every. Damn. Hurtful. Thing to Bucky.
Bucky did nothing to Zemo. He did nothing to Zemo’s family. He was not involved in Sokovia. And he did not have agency when he was in Hydra. ZEMO KNOWS THIS BETTER THAN ANYONE BECAUSE HE HYPNOTISED BUCKY.
Zemo framed Bucky. Put his name and face on every damn newspaper in the world. Got him nearly killed by a SWAT team and a very angry T’Challa. He then hypnotised Bucky, made him relive what he was trying to run away from, demonstrated that he was still under his handler’s whim no matter how hard he fought, then set him onto Steve and the rest of the Avengers. He used Bucky to create the rift between Steve and Tony, and broke up the Avengers. Not only that, throughout TFATWS he continually stirs Bucky up, and tries to drive a wedge between Sam and Bucky by mocking his fighting abilities as a love for violence and talking incessantly about the untrustworthiness of super soldiers.
And yet, the script lets Zemo tell Bucky that he holds no grudge WTAF is that. I honestly hope whoever wrote that line gets bullied to shreds only to have the bully tell him “I won’t hold it against you”, because that’s what happened here.
I’m proud of Bucky not shooting him, because he didn’t play into Zemo’s hand, but I ain’t interpreting that as forgiveness.

Mini rant ahead about CACW
I'm watching the Captain America movies again because posts on here had me wanting to, and I remembered why I disliked CACW so much. The Accords bit. The bit where that one dude shows footage of when the helicarriers were destroyed, and where NY was under attacked, and when Stark fucked up with Ultron, and then the latest mishap at the beginning of the movie. Stark is exerting his guilt here, pushing his guilt onto the others like they should be like him, think like him, and fall in line to do what he thinks is best. (Nevermind about a post I read on here which proved the Accords by themselves were a bad idea anyway with irl examples given).
All I can think of, during this presentation, is wanting someone (Rogers maybe) to stand up and go: okay, fine. You don't like us solving huge problems? We will stop, have fun trying to fix it on your own. Because you know you can't, you know we can, and all this is, is you guys trying to tie a leash and collar on us to do your bidding.
Because where is the logic? The destruction and death from the invasion would have STILL happened in NY if the Avengers did nothing. End result would be the ONLY thing that changed. That being the aliens win. Oh, and when Hydra was trying to send up the helicarriers? Instead of their destruction and crashing down onto the Hydra infested SHIELD headquarters, millions upon millions of people would be dead from being singled out by HYDRA as potential threats. Because that's so much better than Rogers trying to stop it, right?
Ultron was solely Stark's fault, imo, so he should feel bad about it. I'm surprised with all his money we are constantly told he has, that he hasn't started some after-battle organization to help with dealing with the aftermath of nearly catastrophic events. Why didn't he think of that instead? One woman who lost her son messed his head up that badly? Honestly, I would have taken responsibility alone, left it at that woman blaming me, that's fine, let her. But I really, really dislike Stark. (Especially after learning all that RDJ did, he's an asshole.)
But I'm at that scene currently, watching them try to guilt the Avengers into putting on the dog collars themselves, and just getting angry. Maybe I'm spiteful, but I literally would have just been like, "alright, you don't want us fixing messes Stark makes or stopping enemies from taking over the planet and all civilization? Fine, we will watch you guys do it next time." I know Rogers would have a difficult time sitting anything out when he could make a difference in defending us, but I wanted someone to stick it to them. Reveal their flawed logic, and put Stark in his place.

I too get the feeling of disinterest and conflict. Because on the one hand i do want to be excited for more content and maybe if there had been more closure, i would be able to move on. But not gonna lie, after the trauma of endgame, i just want to live in the fanfic world and either pretend it didn't happen or go au and just get good things happening to characters I loved. I don't like the addition of new characters that could have easily been the solution to infinity war. But also 2020 and 2021 ( for me at least) has been shit so maybe disassociating from things that aren't comfort.
I do think I'm doing a little disassociating from things that aren't predictable comfort and even like... avoiding things that I know aren't going to give me closure? I haven't started a new TV show beyond Wandavision and FATWS in over a year. I mean, I watched (and obsessed over) Hannibal but that was three seasons long and ended years ago so at no point was there any anxiety about like "oh no what if I can't see the new episodes, what if they do something insane to the story" etc and I only watched it after I'd read a bunch of fic about it to honestly basically spoil it for myself because I couldn't handle putting myself through the uncertainty of cliff hangars etc
The lack of closure after EG is a real thing for sure-- I remember not even wanting to read or write fix its post EG. I think I wrote one? Maybe two short stories about it but my heart was no where in it, not like it was post CACW or even post IW. The lack of closure and the amount of trauma in EG for us and characters was so intense that afterwards I don't even want to fix it, I just want to move on entirely.
(That being said I have a pretty intense Stony IW and EG fix it in my notes but who knows if it will ever actually get written)
And yeah everytime there's an announcement about more MCU stuff I just scroll past it. They spent eleven years introducing us to characters who's story arcs all culminated in how they save the world and eventually the universe and then not only did we get EXTREMELY unsatisfying endings for most of our faves
-- which is a whole other rant but like, on the surface, Tony, Steve and Thor's ending seems okay, Tony finally got rid of all the bad guys that have been haunting him since 2012, Steve got his dance, Thor gets to go off adventuring. But peel off ONE layer and it's like, so they killed off someone who worked for fifteen years to fix himself, the world, finally got a piece of happiness and then died? Steve abandoned his friends and this new world after saying he had to move on to get back to a woman who HAD moved on and who had in fact told him to move on previously? Thor who has come full circle on his journey and learned humility and bravery and the truth of worthiness and sacrifice and now he just wants to bro-around with his new friends instead of being king? BOOOOOOOOO--
Anyway, not only did we get an extremely unsatisfying ending for most of our faves, but then the survivors of the trauma who should have been left with a vague "yay our lives can move on, the sun is coming up and birds are singing" which is lazy writing but at least somewhat closure like-- the survivors are thrust right back into sort of super terrible things. Or into a world post Blip that is honest to god worse than it was pre Blip. All of their work and trauma and sacrifice was for nothing.
And this version of Spiderman is just-- isn't the whole allure of Spidey that he's a genius and makes all his own stuff but also lives off ramen and is constantly late for class and basically a disaster and also has that existential dread/crisis humour with a slightly John Mulaney esque "this might as well happen" demeanor? I have no interest in watching anything about Peter "I inherited Stark industries" Parker. And then there's skrulls and multiverses and the Eternals... Im exhausted.
Close the door on the EG verse and move into MCU-Earth 2 or something.

This was a comment left on chapter 11 of my fem!Tony Stuckony time travel/soulmate fic, Hanging From a Cross of Iron, and I just wanted to put a couple things out there.
First of all, I’m not mad. We’ll make that clear. I’ve received variations of this comment before and it’s rather on the mark. But sometimes both sides can be correct in how they interpret a piece of fiction, and I wanted to show that.
Tumblr media
So… yeah. This is something I get every so often on this fic, especially around this chapter (10-12ish) and I just… really wanted to post my reply to it, if for nothing other than explaining the way my brain works and WHY I hate Captain America: Civil War so much for ruining so many good things in fandom.
I’m not putting this out there for sympathy or agreement or to start a fight or stupid shit. It’s more like a… “I’m tired of explaining myself, let me post something I feel is a semi-eloquent response to someone who was at least mostly respectful and got some things right, who I know does represent a fair portion of people who may be interested in reading this fic,” which I could then just point/link to the next time I wake up to things making me sad in my inbox on top of me being sad and feeling guilty at not having written for a while.
Stupid covid. Stupid life being dumb and depressing and draining energy and happiness from many. Just you wait. I’ll be back soon with Codega and this fic, Cross.
But here. This is my reply to the above comment:
So I don’t normally reply to critique such as this because this IS fanfiction, but you are at least part right: it IS supposed to be unfair.
This is me working out my issues with Civil War, because boy that sure as fuck pissed me off. I love Stuckony, but after CACW it was really hard to reconcile that love anymore. So this was my way to do that, and I 100% wanted to bring in the unfairness, the distrust, the favouritism, the… meanness that I saw and felt after that.
It’s also a way for me to work through my issues at the injustices I suffered at the hands of my ex-husband—I started writing this shortly after packing my bags and leaving.
I wanted a slow, somewhat realistic, non-fairytale path to even partial redemption, shared pain and circumstances and experiences, and to show that things CAN work out as long as certain lines are not crossed. I skirt the line sometimes, definitely on purpose, but that’s for ME.
I wanted to turn the tables: Steve (and Bucky) were out of their time and comfort zone in the future—Toni, in turn, needed to be out of her time and comfort zone in the past.
Plus, can you imagine a soulmate world where you’ve had a partner and you think “this is it”? Then bam! Suddenly someone’s suddenly thrust into your life.
And I wanted to play on every single issue Toni would have experienced with her family, friends, “friends”, enemies, Obie, her company, the world, etc., post-IM2.
None of them have had an easy go of it and war is goddamn hell. They ALL have PTSD. (But also, lol, the Howlies start laying into Stucky about what you’re getting mad about here too, so I’m way ahead of you!)
From the beginning, this was as much a psychological setting as a romantic one: way more so in the beginning. But it slowly crawls its way out of the murk. I wanted a soulmate story where it wasn’t all sunshine and roses. I wanted a story where they had to fight for it… or where they had a choice, shitty as it may be (they’ll NEVER choose not to have Toni, that was never going to happen). I wanted something… realistic, even amidst super soldiers, super tech, an almost unbelievable war, and soulmates existing.
I wanted it to be a fight. I wanted rejection… then them, ALL of them, to choose each other despite that, despite their past, and despite fate.
That is my goal with this fic. And since I take my own sweet time, that’s really not readily apparent so soon in this fic, even at chapter 11.
The love will be there. The unconditional love, the equal triadic love. Not just Stucky plus Toni. Because believe me, Stucky is probably one of my least favourite ships that include some of my favourite characters. Sounds ridiculous since I write them here, but as a historian I wanted to take that, take some realism, with a dash of ridiculous and hurt and pain and anger, and see what I could do with that.
The entire reason this story exists is because of a scene idea I had that doesn’t come about until the future in the 20s chapters. Leaning on each other and trusting each other because one of them was lost. Well, technically, that happens twice.
But the point is: this is a long as fuck story towards a love they have to (and WANT to, eventually) fight tor.
This fic is for me. It’s for people like me. It’s for people who don’t want an easy love story. It’s absolutely okay that you don’t like it! There are SO many fics that I dislike for a variety of reasons, and I simply close it, mark it as Did Not Finish, and don’t return. I recognize not every fic is for me.
This one’s for me. I may have sort of stalled out where I’m at in the 20s chapters, but it’s left at a pretty good place, and I’m looking forward to this dumb pandemic so I can get back to forging this love between these three idiots, as well as pick up an old Star Wars story I left 4+ years ago due to the abuse at the hands of my ex. But I’m ready to return to it now. Well, after the world calms down a little.
It’s okay if you’re done with this story—that is 100% your choice and I will never begrudge you that. I’m glad you gave it a try though! If you’re interested, you could skip ahead and see how the dynamics have changed, or I could give you clips and examples too.
My one wish (though I understand it completely) is that you had not done this on Anon. For a few reasons:
1, I would never hold this opinion against you, especially because you got tons of it right! Go you!
2, I’d love to understand you better and discuss this with you. No recriminations whatsoever.
3, But I do wonder who of those who have read my other writings left me this message. It makes me a little sad, and I will wonder which of the people I talk to have this negative opinion of me now, but that’s also my own past issues rearing their ugly heads. You have every right to remain on Anon, though it’s not so nice when you wake from a nice dream and discover anon ‘dislike’ in your inbox on a work you slaved away on, and that the dislike is specifically about the things you wrote about deliberately, hah. Sorta funny, actually, so I’ll let that one go. xD
Thank you, though, even if I disliked reading this words: it helps me to look at my own work critically and to better understand how to frame and write things going forward.
Not every fic is for everyone, and that’s okay. I’ve encountered mine, you’ve encountered yours, but I think we’ve both learned from this interaction.
Whoever you may be, even if you divulge your handle to me, my respect for you wouldn’t diminish. It’s good to have healthy discussions and to look critically upon your own work—even if I am a sensitive bean and it hurts a little, I’m fine. :P
I think the lesson to be learned here is: fuck everything after CACW!!!! Grrrrr xD
Take care,
Juuls
P.S. I may post parts of this on my Tumblr because I do occasionally encounter similar complaints about this story, and I think maybe this is the most coherent and respectful enough comment-reply response I’ve had on this topic. Thank you.
P.P.S. Happy to talk privately too!
P.P.P.S. And the offer still stands for some lovely clips from future chapters, especially if you’re not considering continuing reading this story anymore; it’ll at least show what I’m talking about and what I’ve been working tirelessly towards. It’s hard—fucking hard—work to get past CACW and still like these characters together (my fic Paper Boats is probably one of my bigger testaments to that, oof) and I admit it’s still really really hard and I struggle with it. Covid isn’t the only reason I’ve sort of stalled out on that. But that’s more because I’m like “now what?” than not seeing any love between these three.
It’s a long journey. I knew it was going to be. But I like a challenge. :)
Take care, be well, stay safe, to you and all of yours.
And may you find many fics you love!

Hello Sine, I read your post few days back on Howard. I didn’t know the MCU had an influence on the comics. I’m really surprised. My question is; were comic Tony or Steve subjected to some changes? Were they influenced by the MCU like Howard or is it mostly for unknown/side characters with no solid foundation? Thank you
Oh, yeah, comics have changed a lot in response to the MCU.
They have a habit of coming out with new events to run at the same time as MCU canon that are theoretically supposed to draw in new readers, I assume, but in practice really have nothing to do with whatever MCU thing is coming out and are generally very confusing. When CACW came out they ran Civil War II, which was a fight between Tony and Carol (who did not, at the time, exist in the MCU) about an Inhuman who I am pretty sure does not exist in the MCU. When Infinity War came out they ran Infinity Wars, which also featured a bunch of people who did not exist in the MCU and was about running a weird bodysharing AU inside the Soul Stone.
They also like to reprint older issues to coincide with MCU events, which is nice of them, but, like, God help you if you watch Age of Ultron and then decide to read Age of Ultron. There are collections of Sam’s complete Cap tenure coming out now, which is very nice, but if you are here from the MCU you may be confused about the part where Sam becomes Cap because Steve is unexpectedly 95 years old (okay, so maybe that part is easy to get now that Endgame has happened) and then also Steve is young again but secretly Hydra and simultaneously Captain America. (They are not reprinting the Steve run that was going on at the same time, as far as I can tell.) And then they push other series into prominence because people like the MCU versions -- and, I mean, I am enjoying the hell out of the current Guardians run, but its major characters include Moondragon, Phyla-Vell, and Rich Rider, so good luck, MCU fans.
Fandom is pretty sure that they stopped FF for a few years because they didn’t have the movie rights and also that they went around retconning a bunch of characters to not be mutants back when they also didn’t have the movie rights to the X-Men; the two most famous are Wanda and Pietro, but, I mean, there was also a Squirrel Girl issue devoted to explaining that she definitely was not a mutant now. They probably also pushed a lot of Inhuman characters and tried to position Inhumans as sort of the next mutants, narratively, because they had movie rights to those.
The main Avengers team is now pretty much mostly made up of characters they want to push in the MCU as well as characters people will know from the MCU. You can tell they also tried to do this at the beginning of Hickman’s Avengers run because he started with the MCU team from the Avengers movie before shoving like twenty additional people onto the team, and then they came out with Avengers Assemble which was very continuity-light and featured a lot of MCU dynamics (like, Bruce being anyone the Avengers regularly hang out with, which was definitely not the case before the MCU). They added Coulson to the comics, too. And Nadia is definitely not the same as Hope, but, uh, her name means “hope” in Russian which is, as we say now, very sus.
Also the Infinity Stones are now Gems and their colors, I think, match the MCU.
In terms of specific changes to Tony and Steve’s comics:
The RT node was obviously clearly introduced because of the arc reactor, and I would bet that Zeke Stane was created because suddenly people cared about Obadiah Stane a lot more. (Am sort of surprised they didn’t decide to resurrect him, actually.) The comments from Marvel editorial in the letters column during Bendis’ IM run were explicitly clear about the fact that they were trying to make 616 Tony sound more like RDJ in terms of quippiness and general personality. There is at least one armor that is a straight-up port of MCU armor.
Coates’ current Cap run has brought Peggy Carter back to life -- she died several years ago -- made her young, and also not made her a blonde anymore. You know, so she looks more like MCU Peggy. (The hair color thing is particularly weird in light of the fact that Steve originally noticed Sharon specifically because she looked so much like Peggy.) You get a lot more comics putting Steve’s origin in Brooklyn (although this is not 100% consistent and never was) and also I read an entire miniseries that seemed to be under the impression that in 616 it was the Red Skull’s fault Steve got iced. (It was Baron Zemo.)
There are probably more but that’s all I can think of right now.
