I got sidetracked by BG3 last night but after reviewing I got way more things done than I thought I did:

Did some stuff with the map, it's looking really good now but I paused since I thought I probably need to post more context first in the form of:

Finishing my series of drawing Aki in different outfits! The art IS actually done now, it's just going to take me a little bit to organize them as it's essentially a paper doll that I'll have to get a billion screenshots of. It's sooo cute though. I was going to add a section for accessories too but I think that's going to be better served on a normal (non chibi) ref

Reviewed my old (modern) Sion ref as I probably need to post it again due to them being an original race/species. (I know it's on DA somewhere buuut I would prefer to have something for people to reference here) As a "crash course" sheet, it's not tooo bad, there are a fix inaccuracies in the text I need to fix, but it's overall not the worst given how old it is. It's just that it's a LOT of text compared to the amount of images. I don't really know what can really be done about that though besides breaking it up into chunks and adding more images. Speaking of images, some of the character art is really bothersome, I might need to redo them. 🤣 Cavi was still a new character and I didn't have a solid idea of him then, so looking at him on there is very "who is this man" energy. OG Tower and Nails is also a problem as the situation with them got way complicated. Do I redraw them as is or only put the newer Tower? HMM.

One thing I genuinely think the fandom forgets or underestimates is just how weird Neil is. Like we paint him to be this carismatic, flashy, cocky bad boy, but in reality he's stingy, skittish, balks at anything more personal then his thoughts on Exy and Cannot for the life of him socialize. Like in the Raven King, right after Seth dies, he straight up goes:

"Neil had to patch things up with [Allison] somehow, but he didn't know where to start. He'd never been good at winning people over. Someone like Allison wasn't likely to be his first success. "

Neil's spent his life living on the outskirts of "average" life. Ergo, he's cagey and flighty and so far removed from normal that even among the Foxes he'll always be a little unpredictable and odd. And you know what, good for him; we all deserve an antisocial introverted asshole to raly behind.

What should you do if you feel that two of the characters are too similar and want to distinguish their personalities?

Characterization: Unforgettable Characters

I would say that's the whole point of characterization! Often we write about characters with similar ages, ethnicities, place of residence, etc.

It's all about: "How memorable is this particular character?"

Unusual Physical Features

Give your characters one distinguishable physical feature that can be referenced throughout.

Maybe one of them come from a family of redheads. It can be as simple as making one of them wear glasses.

The way we look, and the reactions we get from other people about our looks, form a large part of our own self-perception. This is especially true if your characters are teens, or have a job where they need to be particular about how they appear.

Quirky Body Language/Habits

Come up with some memorable, uncommon gestures that comes naturally to your characters. It can be something they do unconsciously.

What makes them make those gestures consistently?

A Distinct Character Voice

Dialogue is the window to the minds of your characters.

Give them a stock phrase that they use often, or a speech pattern

Give one of them a stutter, a lisp, a particular way of pronouncing some words, etc.

Nicknames (or teling names)

Nicknames are easy if your characters are part of the same group of friends or one of them has a reputation (whether god or bad)

You can also choose to give them telling names that hint at an immediately distinguishable characteristic, although this may feel shallow depending on the overall tone of your story.

What Do They Represent?

Characters often reflect types of people we have met in real life. Or, they personify certain values/perceptions we hold about the world in general.

If a character is the embodiment of "the silent genius", the way he carries himself would be totally different from "the forever insecure", although the two of them may simply appear quiet to someone who doesn't know them.

Think about what made you write those characters in the first place. Which archetype/person type did you want them to represent?

Combine The Characters

Sometimes, one of the two indistinguishable characters may not be serving a role that is big enough.

If there's not much story material to be divided between two characters, combine them into one, see what changes, and move on.
