Thor: Love and Thunder
Just got back from the new Thor movie. Movies release on Wednesdays here, so we tend to get the big ones a bit early. I'll put the spoilery stuff behind a cut, but some non-spoilery thoughts first.
It was fun. Nice, entertaining movie. Better than average for the MCU, but nothing too spectacular either. It's Ragnarok, but more so. That includes the good and the bad.
I was never bored, it moved along swiftly. There were NO typical Marvel action scenes. You know, the 3rd act CGI battle that takes way too long? Obviously there was action, some fights, but nothing too bothersome.
Lots of great music, the visuals were stunning. All the actors seemed into it. Christian bale made an excellent villain. And of course it was funny.
But. Those last two...
Gorr was an interesting antagonist, and when they let him be scary, he was terrifying. But we don't really get to see much of his rampage. We're mostly told he's doing terrible things all over the galaxy. I feel like they could have put more effort in.
It was definitely a funny movie, but like with Ragnarok, it often undercut the more serious emotional moments. The MCU as a whole does that, but it's really noticeable here. And then there are a few jokes that are just too silly for me. They don't just undercut a specific scene, or this movie, but they're so cartoonish it's hard to reconcile with the rest of the MCU.
More (spoilers) behind the cut
We get a cute montage of Thor and Jane's relationship and how it ended. It works for the movie, but I'm nerdy enough that I'm trying to fit it into the larger timeline and...?
I don't think I'm invested enough in Jane or her romance with Thor to really be that affected by her fate. The movie also just moves so swiftly through everything, there's no real time to be affected by anything tbh.
Then there's the final post credits scene, where Jane arrives in Walhalla to be greeted by Heimdall(!). Combine that with the multiverse shenanigans, and it really does feel like no character's ever truly gone, even when they die.
Children seem to be an important theme. Maybe for some people this hits harder, but I have no maternal instincts to speak of. I even just became an aunt and while my nice is great and I'm happy for my brother, I'm still mostly relieved it's not me.
So yeah, the reveal that Thor apparently wants to be a dad? Meh. And that he winds up becoming one (sort of)? Also meh. I was also a bit confused tbh, because the final scene made it seem like this was an ending for Thor, a sort of 'happy ever after'. But the mid-credits scene had Zeus swearing revenge on him, sending Hercules. And we got a 'Thor will return'. No idea how they'll manage with a little kid in tow, except maybe if she becomes one of the Young Avengers?
There's no real connection to the rest of the MCU. The gods, including Celestials, I guess. Introduction of Eternity as a being, maybe? Selvig, Darcy, Sif. The Guardians of the Galaxy. No Loki or Banner/Hulk.
It's weird, because they name all the people he lost and they mention the battle against Thanos. But they don't mention the Snap or Tony or Natasha. It's in some respects very much a Thor movie, not a Marvel one.
Sounds like I'm down on the movie, and I'm not, I enjoyed it. But I can't imagine this is one we'll be talking about for ages yet.

What I didn’t (and did) like about Thor: Love and Thunder
-it’s a fun movie about space vikings, and this is just my opinion-
TLAT is a comedy movie trying to fit into an action/adventure frame.  And it doesn’t work.
Taika Waititi is a great director, and I love his work.  But I feel like, with this movie, he needed to pull back a little and let the audience enjoy the motions of an action movie he was trying to instill, to believe there was some sort of danger.  If you’ve ever seen Jojo Rabbit or even Thor Ragnarok, you know Taika can do serious.
This boils down to two main points that sort of feed into each other- tone, and lack of stakes.
When we first meet Gorr in the beginning of the film, the tone is very serious.  His grief, desperation to protect his daughter, and betrayal from his god are all done very well.  Overall, Gorr is the one serious character in this film.
But as soon as we leave Gorr to join Thor, everything shifts.  The proceeding battle is all one big joke.  Thor starts in a robe, which he shucks off in the open, just getting grazed with 1 shot (not even near the arm or something, in the middle).  The camera spends a lot of time on the Guardians, who kinda look concerned about the battle, but are mostly there to roll their eyes and say “come on Thor, its time to win this battle”.  And yes, I think this is on purpose.  At this point in the film, Thor is having an existential crisis.  He doesn’t care, really.  He just wants to get the battle over with so he can go back to feeling nothing.  Everything in this section is played off as a joke because Thor can’t handle being serious.  But then this tone carries through practically the rest of the film? And while it could be argued that the tone is used to reflect Thor’s nihilism, all it does is make it appear to the audience that there are no stakes in the movie.  That we shouldn’t care about the villain, or the children, or Jane because this is a classic Thor adventure.
I think the best example is the appearance of Sif.  Thor finds Sif, and the slain god of this planet, the nicest god you’d ever meet (who, for the life of me I can’t find the name of).  But unlike Gorr in the beginning, we get no sense of Thor’s grief for the god, or his fear for Sifs life.  He rushes towards her, and there is no emotional swell of music.  If I remember correctly, it is almost completely silent.  Her injury is treated as a joke, and when she says to let her die, Thor chuckles, and says, “actually, you have to die in the battle to join Valhalla, not after the battle.” Sif says “shit” alright then. And is whisked off to New Asgard.  Which was just, a really odd choice, I thought? Watching in theaters, Sif seemed really desperate in her distress call.  I thought maybe seeing Sif, one of his oldest, best friends, in danger would start Thor’s journey towards caring again about his people and himself (towards choosing love, and feeling shitty instead of feeling nothing).  But instead this interaction is treated as a joke, and an excuse for Thor to go home, meet Jane and start the adventure. The proceeding battle, again, has no stakes.  Remember the opening fight in Thor Ragnarok, the one everyone loved so much? We loved Thor's jokes, his levity in battle.  But the reason we loved it so much was because there were still stakes.  Surtur, his minions, the music, even Thor, were all aware of the danger.  In that scene, Thor isn’t just making jokes, he is angry.  Angry at Surtur, angry at the prospect of Ragnarok, of losing Asgard.  I know that in TLAT, Thor has lost a lot.  He’s gone past anger and depression, and gone straight to complete nihilistic crisis mode.  But something needs to bring him out of that.  It’s not the battle in New Asgard, it’s not the threat of losing his life, it’s not even the children being stolen.  It ends up being Jane, but in my opinion, it’s too late in the movie for the audience to care.
Frankly, I wanted Korg to die in Omnipotence City.  I know that sounds harsh (and I did truly love Korg later in the movie, his funny bits in Val’s hair, his husband Dwayne, his final narration) but it would have created some seriousness in a movie truly lacking it.  It would have made Thor angry, it would have told the audience that these characters aren’t immortal, it would have given Thor a little more sympathy for Gorr, having been mistreated by the gods himself.  I just wish, as an audience member, my history with these characters wasn’t the only reason I cared about them in this movie.  I wish there were emotional ups and downs.  At the end, Thor is at a better place than he was in the beginning.  He’s adopted a child, cares for her, and is fighting for her.  He’s out of his nihilistic funk, and he cares.  But Thor was basically passive in this journey, and I feel like he could have learned so much more.
Thor’s emotional journey doesn't feel complete, perhaps because too much was left on the cutting room floor.
There were so many bits I thought would go somewhere, but didn’t.  Bits that probably didn’t get included because they weren’t jokes. This movie is just under two hours, you could definitely fit some more stuff here, especially if you cut more unnecessary stuff.
They could have explored Thor’s relationship with Stormbreaker a bit more (Thor is yearning for the past, Mjolnir and Jane, but he must find meaning in the present and appreciate what he has now).
They could have spent more time with Valkyrie and Thor (remember that bit, when the children are taken and King Valkyrie can’t calm her people, but Thor’s booming voice gets their attention and he makes a speech).  I feel like that was a bit of an offense.  Valkyrie is King, and Thor has been gone for years, after spending his time as king in crippling depression and alcoholism. They could have spent more time talking about his reign, or Val’s reign, or just anything.
And finally, I feel like they should have spent a lot more time talking about who Thor is now.  Starlord mentions it in the beginning, that Thor doesn’t really know who he is.  And he doesn’t.  Because he doesn’t care to think about it.  And at the end of this movie, we should have had an answer.  But I don’t think we do.  And yes, at the end, Thor chooses to be a lover.  He chooses to care, even if it means feeling shitty.  But that’s not what I’m talking about.  Who is the Thor who cares?  Is he a warrior? A prince? He’s definitely not a king.  Is he a father? A protector? A god? I don’t want it spelled out, I just think they should have focused more on his internal journey as well.
Omnipotence City.
I originally had a much bigger problem with this.  I think the whole, mysterious, convenient city of the gods got a little too “Supernatural” for me.  But it totally has comic basis, and it’s an important place for Thor to visit, to illustrate that the gods have become so proud and conceited that they’ve forgotten how they got the title of gods.  They no longer protect their people, and instead rank each other based on how many lives were sacrificed in their name.  I feel like it would’ve been cooler if TLAT had again, explored this a little more.  Said that a real ‘god’ protects their people, and the people who worship them.
“Your ancestors called it Magic, and you call it science. I come from a realm where they are one in the same.” -Thor, Thor
“We are not gods.  We’re born, we live, we die.  Just as humans do.”- Odin, Thor: The Dark World
Asgardians only received their ‘god’ status because humans gave it to them.  On visits to Midgard, Thor showed off his elemental lightning magic, and youthful promiscuity, and became the god of thunder, and the god of fertility.  Tales of Odin’s campaign against the Jotun on Earth earned him the title as god of war, associated with wisdom, poetry and magic.  The Jotun “devourers” earned the place as the evil in Norse bedtime stories.  In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Asgardians are astoundingly powerful yet mortal beings, given the title of god because they are worshiped by the people of Earth.
I did like some things, though
Zeus’s greek accent- I don’t know, I’d just never heard any version of Zeus have his origins actual accent, and I think it was the right choice.
The way Jane’s cancer was treated was decidedly serious, but it wasn’t a pity party. I love when she breaks the sink.  She’s tired, hurt, and desperate.  But this is Dr. Jane Foster, a tough workaholic who has told only a few people about her diagnosis.   I actually think Jane was meant to mirror Thor emotionally.  Jane knows it doesn’t matter what she risks as Mightier Thor, because she is dying anyway.  But instead of joking off and not caring, Jane actually works hard to do good with her remaining time.  She is a hero.
The bit where Val kisses the Olympic girl’s hand was really cute (Though I know some people have problems with her representation as a “slutty bisexual” and I agree, i just feel like this moment in particular was nice.)
The colors! I loved the visuals in the battle with Gorr, the contrast of magic vs decay
Though I was kind of annoyed with the goats in the beginning (ANOTHER JOKE, really?) I liked the bifrost ship.  It was really cool to see the carriage moving like that, and it gave the characters time to talk instead of just fast traveling everywhere.
I didn’t know how I felt about Thor’s new costume, I’m so used to him wearing silver, but I do like that his gold was used to contrast with Jane’s silver.  Maybe even upping his shininess (he was competing with her in the beginning after all 😄)The dusting of him in gold after Omnipotence city and his use of the lightning bolt was really cool.  Overall, this movie is so pretty.
The kids at the end was a really feel-good scene, though I wish it had a little more seriousness in it (maybe a close shot of Thor, realizing this was his only option, that these kids have to fight if they want to survive, he can’t protect all of them AND fight Gorr, then acting all cheery for their sakes.)
Thor and Jane holding pinkies going into battle🥰
I both did and didn’t like the assimilation of Asgardian culture into Midgard.  Get money however you need to, but I feel like the tourist-trap ification would be really disappointing to the Asgardians who died.  But I also know, that is exactly what would happen if there were an actual Asgardian settlement on Earth.
Jane and Val’s friendship was really great.  I’m glad that even though we didn’t get to see it, those two bonded :)
The title? “Together they’re known as Love and Thunder” ethereal.  Poetic cinema.  The deepest part of the movie.
Overall, TLAT had some issues, and I can see why people were upset. But at the end of the day, its just a fun movie, and it should be enjoyed for what it is

recollection & foreboding | trial 6.3 | la princesa
Princesa looks excited about the development, though. “So this is a ‘destroy the world and remake it in my image’ kinda villain?” she points at a random direction. “That’s cool!” “And lame!”
Tumblr media
“You can’t destroy the world. Like,” she leans back, waving her hand, “I live there, you know? I kinda like it. If you’re gonna keep trying, I’ll kill you.”
At the topic at hand, Princesa raises a hand. “As for my name, it’s Tsubame Awakusu!” She writes out the strokes in the air. “Tsubame as in swallow, Awakusu as in millet and camphor tree.”
Then another Princesa flashes a peace sign. “I call myself Ayame Rinko! Iris and gem child. No roses or lords, as you can see,” she grins, flashing a second peace sign.
The fact that the fingers are pointing towards Beowulf due to analysis of Ragnarok is really just so cool to her. She’s more movie nut than gamer, so she admittedly didn’t know too much about it. But that’s so curious! She makes a note to get into video games one day (ominous).
Speaking of games! The cloning didn’t seem to amount to much value, but Princesa homes in on another point from the evidence. “Nico! What was that about the first killing game?”
But multiple Princesas continue different lines of thoughts.
Tumblr media
“So our criminal profile!” she exclaims. “Someone with plenty reason to hate on the heroes, but still too righteous to accept the self-indulgence of villainy, because inside, they are still a hero.” “Unwilling to trust either side, they decide to accept the mantle of anti-hero by themselves for the sake of the greater good!” She smiles brightly between her hands.
“I think it fits well narratively and poetically, but I’ve got no real evidence,” the Princess giggles. “We’ve got some not-quite-so villainous villains around, but I think only one seems like the self-righteous kind.” “I don’t think anyone else here would get that mad about their power being used for murder, specifically. None that we can clear already, anyway.” She doesn’t quite point fingers, but if her gaze is any indication, she’s joining in the vague direction of the pointing.
And yes, she is in a relationship with Ghostheart, the last Princesa confirms.
Tumblr media
She puts a hand to her cheek. “Oh dearie me, how did you know? Xanathar is truly a top class informant!”

burn me to the ground
(1)gentle lover (2)burn me to the ground Movie/Game/Show: Thor: Ragnarok Dynamic: Loki Laufeyson/Reader Warnings: ragnarok spoilers?, passing description of you as toned/muscular cuz loki with gf who could crush him >>>, i give more time gap to thor's arrival cuz :), fem pronouns Summary: He’s never been one for such sentiment, maybe that’s why her influence is so terrifying to him. ~~~
“You wanted me to meet someone?”
“Right! Right, right, right,” the Grandmaster waves his hand in a gesture for Topaz to guide his chair through the room, “He was all mumble-y and murmur-ey and I heard your name, so I was thinking maybe you could tell me what this guy’s all about!”
Upon seeing the man in reference, your eyes widen and you nearly stumble back.
The man, however, immediately tilts his head and practically hisses out, “You.”
Well, no point in pretending to not know him now when he reacts like that. Sighing and tossing up your hands as if to show relief, you gush out an awfully whiny, “Aw, prince! Thank goodness you’re okay! I was so worried when we got separated!”
“So, how do you two know each other?” the Grandmaster’s smile is broad, if not slightly threatening, as he waggles a finger between the two people in front of him.
“I’m a sort of guard to your royal asshat.”
Loki doesn’t get the chance to speak up as the Grandmaster claps in response to you, “Well, I’m sure he’ll be happy to know your track record here doesn’t show any signs of slacking!”
“Certainly, yes,” Loki nods curtly, not pleased at the prospect of a Midgardian - this Midgardian - having to watch over him again, “Reassuring to have her here.”
“I would be, look at her- " reaching over, the Grandmaster squeezes at your bicep, “So strong, she’s a great contender!”
“Contender…?” Loki murmurs to the woman, a brow quirked.
Smacking the prince’s arm, you shake your head before turning back to the Grandmaster, “Loki wouldn’t be a very good contender, he’s pretty frail and weak. Lame, too.”
“Aw,” wagging a finger as one would to a pestering child, the Grandmaster’s broad grin falls into a tight-lipped smile before he speaks, “Loyal guard trying to protect her prince, how sweet.”
“What can I say?” Loki notices the way you seem more on edge now, breath shakier, but you manage to mask it as light laughter, “Duties never rest.”
Nodding, the elderly man turns to Topaz, whispering in her ear before dismissing you both back to your quarters.
It’s as the door to the room shuts that Loki is greeted with the first hint of aggression he’s ever seen from you - not even in his time on Earth had he seen malice slip from you like he does now. The door slams and you wring your hands in your hair, nearly shouting as you turn to the God,
“You moron, why’d you have to go and say that? As if you know me? You could’ve gotten us killed.”
“But I do know you,” Loki held his hands up, pausing your rampant pacing, “Was I not supposed to try and find solace in the fact that I was on a new, strange planet with the one person I recognize?”
“You’re such an ass,” it’s a deflated insult, sighed out while you stomp over to the one bed in the room and slump down on it, “Just hope that nutjob believed me about you being weak.”
“Which, I believe we should have a talk about, by the way,” Loki’s brows furrow, “Why do that? I don’t need any protection nor defense, especially by the likes of you.”
“Unless you want to go as a gladiator and potentially be ripped in half by people twice your size, I would just take the label of weakling socialite and run with it. Hope you get on the Grandmaster’s good side like I have and eventually he maybe stops looking at you like a starving man to steak.”
“Haven’t quite gotten to that last bit, I imagine.”
“No, unfortunately not. It’s a little terrifying.”
It’s quiet as you rub at your aching temples and think over the situation. Loki turns and begins assessing the room - a room he hopes to not be stuck in.
“Are we to share this?”
“Probably,” yet another exhausted sigh slips from your lips, “I wouldn’t bother bringing it up to the old man, you might get vaporized.”
There’s a beat of silence before Loki chuckles, it’s forced and tight.
“Oh,” nodding, you lean back until you’re fully reclined on the bed, “you think I’m joking.”
The God’s eyes widen at that, turning to face you in alarm, “Are you not?”
Suddenly sitting up to untie your boots, you mutter, “I’m trying a slow coup. I was gonna do it on my own, but now you’re here so that’s minorly reassuring.”
“Coup?”
“Accident comes to the Grandmaster, we move up. I say we, but if you try and overthrow me for the throne, I will have to duel you. Duel at best, but at worst…”
Another pregnant silence flows through the room, Loki tilting his head, “You do realize how alarming that is when you don’t finish that sentence, right?”
“Good.”
It was an unlucky arrangement. Trapped on a trash planet, literally, with a Midgardian worm - whom he either has to share a bed with or rest on a loveseat for the nights. None of which is even mentioning the Grandmaster.
The Grandmaster.
On the surface he’s light. Bubbly. Fun. And then someone drops a glass too close to his favorite new shoes and suddenly they’ve been pardoned from the land of the living and the stench of wretched toast permeates through the room.
It’s that memory that has Loki tuning out of the story of the man across from him. His hands fall to his thighs and begin rubbing away the sweat of nervousness that gathers there. The movements don’t go unseen, and the woman who assigned herself as his personal guard reaches down and takes his hand. Uncaring if the rest of the party sees as they cling to one another.
You aren’t Loki’s first choice of partnership but maybe that’s where he’d be wrong - because your grip is strong and it won’t let go unless it’s commanded. It’s comforting and reassuring and Loki can’t remember the last time someone held him like that as he breaks down. It isn’t just the hand holding at parties, it’s in the late nights when neither of you can sleep and your heads are too full of countless worries of each’s own home. It’s the way you hold him and don’t say a word of it the next day. Barely acknowledging it unless he brings it up first, not wanting to make him uncomfortable or pressured.
It’s kindness and genuinity and he thinks he wants to have you around all the time. After the Grandmaster. After Hela. Whenever and wherever that dust happens to settle, he knows he wants this comfort all the time.
Storytime comes around to Loki. His fingers curl tighter around your hand as he speaks, occasionally taking a break to sip at his neon drink when there’s a hearty whisper-shout of both your names,
“Over here!”
God of Thunder, you notice. Thor of Asgard. You two excuse yourselves from the couch of socialites to cross the room to Thor.
“Thor? You’re alive?” you begin, eyes wide.
“Of course, I’m alive, what’re you two doing? Why aren’t you stuck in a chair? Where’s your chairs?”
“We didn’t get one,” Loki shakes his head.
“Get me out,” Thor urges, still thoroughly confused over the presence of his brother and old friend.
“We can’t,” you whisper.
Nodding, Loki continues, “We’ve gotten in favor with the Grandmaster. In his higher courts.”
“Like friends but scary,” you pitch in, “We’ve been here a few weeks. Maybe a month.”
“A month?" Thor repeats in utter disbelief, "I just got here.”
“What’re you guys whispering about?” the Grandmaster himself juts into the conversation with a giggle, “Time works different around these parts. On any other world I’d be like millions of years old, but on Sakaar…” he stops and looks between the trio with a teasing grin before shaking his head, “In any case, you two know this… what’d you call yourself - Lord of Thunder…?”
“God of Thunder,” Thor corrects with a forced chuckle.
“I’ve never met this man in my life,” Loki immediately denies.
“He’s my brother.”
Rolling your eyes at the brothers, you’re quick to gesture to Loki, “Adopted.”
The Grandmaster nods, “He any kind of a fighter?”
“You take this thing out of my neck and I’ll show you.”
That’s how they find out that - at the very least, Thor’s alive. Not well, but certainly alive.
The night after that party is mostly quiet in the room. Presently, both people are getting ready for bed but inside their minds is such fueled turmoil that neither truly believes they’re getting rest that night. Upon finishing his state of dress, Loki makes his way out to the balcony.
Air on Sakaar isn’t particularly fresh or clean, nor are the stars incredibly visible with all the city lights, but it felt better out there than being trapped in a room. He’s soon joined by another body at the railing, hands barely brushing together on the roughened metal.
It’s Loki that makes the first move, slowly sliding his hand across the rail until his entwined with yours. Your fingers weave together and Loki can’t help but balance his gaze between your conjoined hands and your eyes. He remembers a time where he used to look into those eyes and see an enemy - now, he can’t imagine a time where he would’ve ever wanted to hurt someone such as you. Can't believe there was a time where he wanted to hurt you. Your care is expressed in tender touches and loyalty. In quiet moments of trust and earnest adoration. In honesty. It's that silent care that speaks the loudest.
It’s your voice that breaks him from his own thoughts, “When this whole thing is over and Sakaar is ruined and Thor will have the throne, where will you go?”
Loki falls silent at that question, he brushes a thumb over your knuckles, pursing his lips and tilting his head as he thinks over what response would fit best. Then he comes to the realization that it wouldn’t matter where he lies as long as he has comfort that lies with him. Comfort that sleeps inside the woman beside him is what he wants.
And so, he mumbles out, “Where will you want me?”
There’s a laugh pulled from you as your head shakes, “You wouldn’t want to go to Earth. Unless you’d like the Avengers up your ass.”
There’s a shared laugh as Loki relents, speaking before laying a kiss to your knuckles, “I wouldn’t be fond of that… but for you, my dear, I’d tear the universe apart.”
“That sounds like exactly why they wouldn’t want you. Sorry to say they’re not fond of universe-tearing.”
A sarcastic huff falls from the prince, “I’m charming and romantic and this is how I’m repaid?”
“However, I can’t say that’s not excellent bargaining to keep you on a leash,” you grin.
“Like a dog?”
“Well, now,” looking away, your lip is tucked between your teeth to muffle possible laughter.
Loki doesn’t follow your example, instead he studies the planes of your face. The curve of your cheek and the way your eyes are lit up by the stars and lights that flow in this city. You’re beautiful. That, he knows. And despite being trapped on Sakaar, he also knows he’s grateful to have someone like you. To have you.
Strong, both in emotional resolve and psychical capability. It’s nice to have someone who can stay level-header and offer support. It makes him want to care and provide for you as well, and that’s what scares him.
You make him want to return sentiment when all he’s cared for before was letting things burn.

Loki ranting
Okay. I had this thought in my head of like just compiling links of all the Loki shit I've posted/reblogged so far so that when I get into a conversation about the show and how it fucking disgusted me, I can just be like "here. here's this masterlist post, go read all this shit. This is my entire argument, and not only mine, but a lot of stuff posted by people far more intelligent and level-headed and eloquent than I am, whom I happen to agree with." Because the alternative is constantly getting fired up all over again, and that is exhausting.
BUT! I'm stupid and don't know how tumblr works. Apparently I can't just be like "give me all the Loki-tagged shit I've got" I can only search all the Loki-tagged shit on all of tumblr. And I'm not scrolling back through all of my posts. I talk too fucking much for that shit 😂
So, I'll try to remember all of my grievances with how the MCU has treated Loki, and all of the excellent posts made by other, equally upset fans, and put it all together here under this nice, neat little cut for everyone else's sanity and scrolling convenience...
For people who actually read my shit fairly regularly - bless you, you crazy, patient people. I love you! - this is going to be a lot of repetition of shit you've already read. Probably at least twice. I'm passionate and I have a terrible memory lol. Sorry.
Anyway, first, for those who don't know me and haven't been following my explosions of rage for the past couple of months, some quick background: I do not read comic books, so Loki's Marvel comic canon means nothing to me. I know almost nothing about it. The reason I'm so in love with the character in the MCU is because I am an eclectic witch and the deity I've actively loved and worshiped the longest in my life (literally for as long as I can remember) is Loki. So when he was mentioned in The Mask, I squeed. When they named Matt Damon's character after him in Dogma, I cheered.
When Thor came out in 2011, I just about died from happiness. I was hungry for any representation of this underappreciated god, no matter what it was. I didn't even bitch about how underpowered he was, because at least he was there. But I'm getting slightly ahead of myself.
I can hear anyone reading this going "Why Loki? Isn't he, like, evil? Like basically the Norse version of The Devil?" Because I heard all this shit irl all the fucking time. And no. So let me give you a quick rundown of who Loki actually is.
Loki is a Trickster God. He's often referred to as the God of Mischief. He is not and never was evil, simply chaotic and hedonistic. Loki Laufeyjarson was the son of Laufey (that's mama; they changed her to a man for some reason in the movie) and Fárbauti. Right from the start, from his name, we get a sign of how Loki goes against traditional norms of the time, because in Norse culture, families were patrilineal, and surnames were "son/daughter of father" (which would have made him Loki Fárbautitason), not the mother. But Loki's surname is matrilineal. Feminist icon woo! lol
Though he's a Jotunn, Loki is counted among the Gods (Aesir) in Norse tradition. Depending on his mood, he is alternately helpful or disruptive to the other Gods. I'm not gonna sit and teach a whole text class on him lol but I'll use my favorite example of Misunderstood Loki - the conception of Sleipnir!
So, get this shit. This is also part of why I DO NOT follow Odin and never fucking will (a very small part, but still part of the reason). So, the other Norse Gods are petty motherfuckers, and they wanted some shit built but didn't want to pay the dude doing the building. So they were like "okay, if you can get it done in X amount of time, we'll pay you, but if you can't manage it NO MATTER WHAT, this whole thing is free." And they made sure he had NO help, nothing but him, his materials, and his Very Good Horsey. And this guy and his horse were fucking BAMFs. So it was looking like he was definitely gonna get it done in time, and Odin was like "nah, fuck that shit. I'm cheap." and so he sent Loki to distract the work horse. Loki transformed into a mare and lured the horse away, got fucked, got pregnant, gave birth to the 8-legged (for some reason) horse Sleipnir. Odin rides Loki's son into battle. Um. Kay.
So Loki helped Odin be a petty mf, and Odin got himself a new pet out of the deal.
Oh, also, because he's smart af and a shapeshifter and a master magician and genderfluid, Loki "fails" to fit the super fucking toxic and narrow Norse/Aesir view of "a real man". He prefers intelligence and manipulation to solve problems rather than violence, he's not afraid to behave like a clown if it gets shit done, and that grosses the Aesir out, so they constantly ridicule him for being "less than a man".
Loki is the God of the outcast and the misunderstood. The marginalized people from all walks of life. He is the God of the LGBT community. In modern terms, he's pansexual, polyamorous (married to Sigyn and they are deeply in love, but boy gets around and I've never seen any indication that Sigyn gives a shit) and genderfluid.
Okay. Focus, Ali. This is part of why I usually post multiple rants instead of one big long one XD The longer I ramble, the more I get sidetracked and forget the original point.
So. Loki's awesome, and being a Trickster, is powerful as all fucking hell. There's not much he can't do.
And now we come to Thor (the movie, not the deity). Loki's there! 24-year-old Ali is spazzing! All is right with the world!
Oh lord, they've actually done him justice?! Amazing! He's complex and nuanced and emotional, just like the real Loki! I loved this movie. Loved. It. The climactic thing with trying to blow up Jotunheim never really made much sense to me until someone made an excellent point the other day about Loki being raised in a racist society that was racist against his own race, he just didn't know it yet, poor child. Baby Thor was never corrected when he pledged to commit mass genocide, so Baby Loki probably absorbed the lesson then that Jotunns=evil and killing them all will win his father's love. Anyway, 2011 Loki was a beautiful, heartbreaking portrayal of the God I've loved all my life and spent 24 years longing to see depicted on the big screen.
Then The Avengers happened. And I saw another Loki very close to Norse mythology - mainly, how he's treated. In the beginning of the movie, he's sick, exhausted, and in pain. He can hardly stand, he stumbles and needs help when he walks. He was very obviously tortured, and the sickly blue light of the scepter's control is in his eyes. That gets less and less pronounced as the movie goes on, showing Loki working his way free of it, but in the beginning, he's a mess. Because he was tortured and used by Thanos. Marvel directly confirmed this, and that he was under the scepter's/Mind Stone's control. Loki's actions are not his own in The Avengers. He's under both threat and Thanos' direct control. The movie actually shows The Other directly threatening him to keep him on task, because this is not Loki's plan. It is not what he wants. He's being used and villainized... Just like in real life. It hurt to see this done to him, but the accuracy was too beautiful to ignore.
Thor: The Dark World comes out. I've heard people complain that this movie is the weak link in the Thor trilogy. I disagree. I think that's Ragnarok, for a bunch of reasons, but we'll get there. (And for the record, I loved Ragnarok, too. It was a funny movie. Infinity War and the Disney+ series are the only portrayals of Loki in the MCU that I truly fucking hated.) Anyway, good, fun movie. Had its faults, as all movies do, but it still followed Loki's real-life arc in a way. How? By having Loki dragged back to Asgard in chains and imprisoned underground. Again, not super happy that this happened to my love, and having to see it on screen was painful, but at least in the MCU he's not chained to a rock with venom dripping on his face for eternity, so there's that. (poor Sigyn. how tired do her arms get, holding up that bowl? best wife ever, amirite?)
In TDW, we're shown Loki's love for Frigga, who favored him and taught him magic as a child. We see his bravado; his attempts to mask his true feelings, especially grief. We see him slowly coming back to himself after the events of The Avengers, and slowly mending his relationship with his brother. He accepts that Odin will likely never love him, but Thor just might, because they were close when they were young. "I didn't do it for him." No, no my sweet, you did it for your brother, and a little out of guilt for what happened to your mother.
At the end, Loki fakes his death and escapes, taking the throne, and I have mixed feelings about this. Not the writer's choices here; I love that completely! A natural progression in Loki's story. But my joy is tainted by how closely they're following the Eddas now. Because Loki's escape from his prison heralds the beginning of Ragnarok. And Loki will die in Ragnarok. I don't want to see that play out in front of my face. I won't be able to handle the grief (spoiler alert! IW broke me. I almost walked out of the theater. Loki's death was legitimately fucking traumatic for me. I don't even care how pathetic that is. That grief was real, it was intense, and I still shake and cry when I think about it.)
Marvel announces that Thor 3 will be called Ragnarok. The internet treats this as a shocking revelation. I roll my eyes and mumble "duh" to myself and move on XD
Then they say Ragnarok will be a buddy comedy. I throw up a little in my mouth and no longer want to live on this planet. If they're going to make something called Ragnarok, could they at least treat it with even a fraction of the respect they've shown these characters thusfar? Jfc. I mean, I'll see it anyway, because I'm a whore for Tom Hiddleston lol. But come on, people!
I hated that they made Hel the long-lost older sister and Fenrir her fucking pet/attack dog. Those are my favorites of Loki's children! Hel is such an incredible badass that the early Christians named their dimension of eternal torture after her! They were terrified of her, to the point of naming the place that terrified them most after her. That's awesome! And Fenrir's just the best. I love wolves. Those two details, and Odin's retcon of "we're not Gods! ...lol, except your sister. she's totally a Goddess. and def gonna kill literally everything, so... good luck! byyyeeeee" pissed me off royally.
The rest was great. I genuinely liked this movie. Still do. And they finally used The Immigrant Song! That was pretty cool. If they'd thrown in Bring the Hammer Down and Thunderstruck, I might've called this movie perfect. XD
I wasn't totally in love with their portrayal of Loki in Ragnarok. Yes, the falling for 30 minutes line was funny, as was "I have to get off this planet" and "YES! That's how it feels!" And "Get Help" was funny as hell. But also, like... There is no way Loki would have been the dumb one in that first encounter with Hela. Also, he can teleport and project copies of himself and shit, so... He would not have been that desperate to go straight back to Asgard and bring her right along with them. Loki's not stupid. But whatever. Movie's gotta movie.
What I did love was seeing the slow mending of his relationship with Thor continuing, and the badass fighting on the bridge. I also loved that, like Real Loki, Movie Loki helped when help was needed, was quick and clever, and while he was carrying out the main plan, he was also planning ahead and grabbing the Tesseract. Yes, that drew Thanos right to them, but that's a whole other thing. Loki never would have left that thing on Asgard to be destroyed or lost.
And now Infinity War. Hooooly fucking shit. You know what? No. I'm not going into this. He was killed, years of character growth were erased forever, my heart fucking shattered. The end.
Endgame. IW hurt me so bad I didn't see Endgame until this year. I actually watched Civil War first (for context: I had actively avoided all Cap movies until this year because I fucking hate Steve Rogers. I find him insufferable. Did not realize what I was denying myself until I watched CW and finally saw the charms of Bucky. When he appeared in IW, I was so lost. XD I was like "...who dis? Murder Jesus?" also I just... didn't care. I was numb by then from crying through most of the movie over Loki)
So, anyway. Endgame. Loki picks up the Tesseract in alternate 2012, escapes, fans go "yay! he didn't actually die!" I go "yes he fucking did. Five years of his life, gone. Five years of growth and change, erased. Loki is dead. This will not be the same."
I was more right than I could have predicted. Now we come to the point of this rant. Sorry it took so long, but you were warned lol.
The Loki series makes me so angry I actually get sick to my stomach. It was fucking TRASH. When I praised Marvel for following Norse mythology so faithfully earlier? Yeah. I DID NOT MEAN TREAT HIM THE WAY THE OTHER GODS DID. I did not mean paint him as a pitiful clown, a joke, a caricature of who he truly was, with his pain and suffering played for LAUGHS.
This is supposed to be 2012 Loki, newly freed from Thanos' control. The Loki we saw in the beginning of TDW - snarky, exhausted, nihilistic. The Loki who rolled his eyes and said "get on with it" expecting to be killed.
The bumbling clown flipping on a dime from posturing to calling himself weak is not 2012 Loki. That is not ANY Loki. That is Tom Hiddleston in a black wig doing what he's told by a shitty writer who had no fucking idea what he was doing and was salty about his (bad) original script (for something totally fucking unrelated) getting killed.
In Episode 1, Loki is mocked, imprisoned, stripped against his will, tormented, belittled, and given a flippant summary of all the trauma Actual MCU Loki suffered that this one skipped out on, with no context, no acknowledgement of the trauma he's already lived quite fucking recently, and with the narrative twisted to not only erase all the abuse he's suffered, but to make it all his fault. And this is supposed to make him want to help these people?
And worse, IT FUCKING WORKS. WHAT?! I CAN'T- FUCKING WHAT?! Remember when I said LOKI IS NOT FUCKING STUPID?! So why is he STUPID?
Episode 2, he's a child. Mentally, this Loki is a fucking child. Now we've erased all the growth and development of his entire adult life. He's dopey, impatient, impulsive, desperate for a pat on the back and actually shows it. Yes, abused and neglected children crave the positive attention we never received, and we often grow up to be a bit emotionally stunted. But not all of us, and not Loki. Not as we've seen him EVER in the rest of the MCU. Playful and a bit callous at times? Absolutely! But not a big dumb fucking puppy.
Episode 3, a ray of hope, despite Sylvie! (I hate Sylvie) Loki casually admits he's pan/bi; labels never come up, but he admits to being with both men and women! He sings! Not really relevant to whether I approve of his portrayal or not lol but Tom has a beautiful voice, Norwegian ("Asgardian" lol) is a gorgeous, entrancing language, and I could watch that one bit on loop for eternity and never get bored. And then, finally, we see a glimpse - a glimpse - of Loki's power! He stops a falling building and pushes it right back up! Are we finally getting to see what he can really do? Will the next episode bring us Loki in all his glory?
Nope. 4 and 5 we see him mocked and pushed around and utterly irrelevant. Again. We see tiny reflections of what he could maybe theoretically do in other random Loki variants, but the "main" (lawl. main. it was the Sylvie and Mobius show. Loki was never the main anything.) Loki? Nothing. He wears his heart on his sleeve for no reason, bonds with the man who imprisoned, taunted, and gaslit him, is killed, and continues to be a moron and a joke. Always the clown. Always the dumb one. The one with the bad ideas. The inferior Loki.
Don't even get me started on that finale. I can't. This already took so much out of me. Fuck Marvel. Fuck this fucking show. I just... I'm done.

Real quick scattering of thoughts on Loki 1x02 and x03 before I watch the newest episode. I watched them pretty much at the same time so it’s a two-for-one post. Here be spoilers for episode 3! On mobile so no cut again, sorry.
Spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned.
Okay. In no particular order but attempting to start with ep 2 first:
Loki trying to get info on the Timekeepers and the TVA in ep 2 and being blocked by the most bored archive librarian ever was hilarious. The whole sequence of him trying to get her attention only for her to completely ignore him until he rang the bell was creepy but so funny.
Loki’s reaction to getting the details on Ragnarok made me so sad. :( Same, Loki. SAME. I’m also still gutted Asgard was destroyed and I refuse to even watch the movie ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But him going to look at that in the first place made me wonder if maybe in the back of his mind Loki’s coming up with a plan to save Asgard? (Or at least, one version of Asgard in the multiverse.) I would love that. I want Asgard back in general and was hoping for Thor 4, but having Loki be the one to save Asgard would be SO fitting. He may be adopted but he’s still an Asgardian at heart, truly. Having Loki be the one to save Asgard would be a great way to show him finally acknowledging that and have all the Asgardians acknowledge it too.
We have an official population for MCU Asgard! 9719 people. That fits. It’s about twice the size of a pretty small suburban town. Asgard is SMALL. It just doesn’t have the space for a lot of people. It’s still a city, but Asgard the Realm has other things on it besides just the city, so it can’t have a huge population.
I wonder what the official population of New Asgard is when we see it in Endgame? And how many Asgardians come back post-Blip? This would really all depend on how many people made it through Hela’s rule and onto the ship during Ragnarok- and then half of them would’ve been killed by Thanos in the beginning of Infinity War. Would half of the remainder have been Snapped away at the end of IW, or would Thanos leave them out since he already halved their population? File under questions Marvel will probably never answer. Also file under “Thanos continues to be really bad at math.” (Should probably go look at the New Asgard sign again to check, but I don’t think it listed population.)
Loki annoying Mobius by messing with his salad was great. Loki annoying Mobius in general was great.
Loki letting the goats free in Pompeii made me think he might have a liking for goats, which means I now have a headcanon that Loki was friends with Thor’s goats as a kid and would sometimes let them loose to get their assistance with pranks. Thank you show, for cute kid Loki headcanons.
Tom Hiddleston probably had a BLAST yelling at people in Latin in character as Loki, and good for him!
Sylvie’s entrance sequence at the beginning of the episode with the fight scene vs the TVA set to “I Need a Hero” was amazing. I haven’t seen Shrek in a while but this might just reach the same levels of A+ “I Need A Hero” song usage as the Shrek sequence.
Speaking of the beginning of the episode, the Ren Faire setting was SO good. Great way to get laughs, and it made me want to go to a Ren Faire again.
The Roxxcart setting for the big encounter later in the episode made me flash back on all the times Roxxon’s appeared in the MCU. Two main thoughts: 1. I so want a Jane!Thor movie where the main villain is Dario Agger, evil Roxxon CEO and Minotaur. Preferably working with a better version of Malekith (from another universe probably) like in comics, because as much as I love Thor 2 my one complaint is that their version of Malekith was SO LAME. Especially compared to comics!Malekith. Plus an Agger + Malekith teamup would mean both the Nine Realms AND Earth are in danger, by definition. Thor 5 please, Marvel. 2. I really, really miss Cloak and Dagger and that show deserved so much better.
(Our) Loki’s perpetual insistence that he’s better and that the plot (pun intended) is about him is both funny and also a little sad- because he knows, or at least thinks, that if he stops insisting those things, everyone will stop paying any attention to him whatsoever. And he needs attention.
Poor Mobius probably felt so betrayed at the end of this episode. :(
Onward to episode 3!
This was by far my favorite episode so far. I LOVE Sylvie. I love her and Loki’s dynamic. I love that we get Loki talking to someone he considers an equal about some very personal things, and that Sylvie does the same thing with him. They understand each other in a way nobody else has. Because they’re the same person, sort of. I’ve taken to calling them “alternate reality twins” and that’s what I’ll keep calling them unless told otherwise.
They also annoy each other in a way nobody else can. And it’s hilarious. They look equally annoyed at the other not falling for their tricks and equally annoyed at needing the other’s help before they really start to bond and I LOVE ALL OF IT. I also feel like they adopt each other a lot quicker than either would be willing to admit, and then they’re annoyed at that! Loki yelling “you’re so weird!” at Sylvie made me go “OH they’re bickering like siblings!!!” and that was pretty early on! I’m an only child but that had peak sibling energy to me. Even them trying to trick and outdo each other had sibling energy most of the time.
Their earlier fight when they first get to Lamentis, before they realize where they are, had some VERY quality quips and also really had me wondering who would win in a fight between the two of them. Sylvie seems to have more physical strength, and she’s got a sword instead of daggers so longer reach, but Loki has skill and he has tricks. I think with his skill at magic (he can TELEPORT?! Probably only a few feet and probably limited by where he can see but that’s SO COOL!!! I don’t think we knew he could do that?!) Loki would likely run rings around Sylvie IF there were no people around for her to enchant. And assuming that she wasn’t able to set any traps beforehand, because Sylvie has proven well able to set traps to take down people who should be at a major advantage against her. Otherwise, I think Sylvie would win. She seems to have better physical training than our Loki, and if there were any people around for her to enchant he’d have to contend with them too. And if Sylvie could lay traps ahead of time, then it could go either way (you never can tell with a Loki, much less two) but I think Loki would probably lose. Loki is just as tricky as she is but that seems to be something she’s had a lot of practice in. Loki is more about confusing opponents with illusions and duplicates and talking his way around people. Sylvie sets traps instead, and is more comfortable/better at using brute physical force.
Speaking of enchanting, me while watching episode 2: “Hey, these mind controlling powers remind me of Enchantress’ powers!”
Sylvie in episode 3: calls her powers “enchanting”
Me: “OH.”
So Sylvie seems to be a composite of 3 characters. 1. Lady Loki, as in Loki when identifying as female. (There’s also that time from before they said Loki was genderfluid and a shapeshifter and back when Loki was still evil when he possessed Sif’s body and went by Lady Loki, but we don’t talk about that.) 2. Amora the Enchantress, a major Thor character/villain who uses magic to “enchant” people into doing what she wants-yes this is definitely a cringey “magically enchants people into loving her, consent-issues-out-the-wazoo” evil seductress stereotype in old comics, but it’s gotten better recently. And 3. Sylvie Lushton, the much lesser-known second Enchantress, who was a regular teenage human girl when after a Ragnarok (don’t remember which one, there have been multiple but this would’ve been early 2000s) Loki for shits and giggles decided to make her think she was Amora and give her the powers to match. She was on the Dark Reign-era (aka when Norman Osborn was in charge of SHIELD and the Avengers) version of the Young Avengers, the Young Masters of Evil, and that’s where I know her from. She’s a great character- she genuinely wants to do good and help people, but her brain is a bit messed up by the number Loki did on it, so she gets confused. I believe she’s currently in comic book limbo after Amora found out about her a while back, got pissed at her for stealing her name and her whole Thing, and tossed her somewhere dangerous on the World Tree while saying something about how if she can survive it then she’ll prove she deserves the name Enchantress. She sadly hasn’t been seen since as far as I know.
So each of those characters have similar characteristics with Loki’s Sylvie. Sylvie 1. Is a Loki who is female (Lady Loki), 2. Was presumably raised on Asgard and uses her magic to “enchant” people via a form of mind control into doing what she wants (Amora the Enchantress), 3. Is named Sylvie (Sylvie Lushton, Encanhtress II). Also worth noting that both Amora and Sylvie Lushton have blond hair, and so does the MCU’s Sylvie. All three characters also have green colored magic!
May turn the above bullets into their own post just for informational purposes. Also, when we said we wanted Enchantress in the MCU, this is not what we meant. Stop with the Monkey’s Paw-style wish granting, Marvel! (Looking at you, X-Men comics’ response to us wanting more Wanda.)
Anyway. Will round off with my favorite thing: everything on the train. Everything on the train was WONDERFUL.
Loki telling Sylvie about Frigga and how she taught him magic and then demonstrating the fireworks made me tear up. 🥺 Right in the feels. I miss Frigga a lot. I miss Asgard/the old Thor franchise in general a lot, but this is about Frigga. She was AMAZING and I miss her. Forever love the detail that Tom and Rene came up with the idea on the set of Thor 1 that Frigga is the one who taught Loki magic and fighting and how that informed their characters’ dynamic to the point of it being canonically discussed later. There’s a great Thor 2 deleted scene where Frigga talks to Thor about this exact thing. Frigga is such a fave of mine.
Sylvie telling Loki about her own past in turn made me very curious what her life was like and what the differences are. She seemed to have had a really hard time of it as a kid and I just want to hug her. (I also want to hug Loki, but that isn’t news.) Loki has had a very tough time, but really only after finding out he was adopted. He doesn’t appear to have had many friends on Asgard before (though I headcanon that he was friends with Lorelai before her exile, and since it’s my headcanon I imagine a similar situation with Amora, if not quite as close a friendship because comics Loki gets along better with Lorelai than her sister) but he at least had a family who loved him and who he loved, and a status as a prince that would’ve given him a good life and protection. Sylvie doesn’t seem to have had any of that as a kid. :(
“Surely there were some would-be princesses? Or perhaps a prince?” CANONICALLY BISEXUAL LOKI YES! YES.
Comics Loki is canonically both bisexual and genderfluid! Explicitly discussed on page, multiple times, and expounded on by writers too. (One of the most heartwarming Odin moments for me- yes, Odin does have heartwarming moments!- is when he’s telling his kids he loves them and he says something to the effect of “my son, my daughter, my child who is both.” The latter is Loki, the former are Thor and Angela. I might still be bitter over MCU Hela taking Angela’s place in the family sorry not sorry. This was in Original Sin: Thor and Loki, for anyone wondering.) I tend to default to he/him pronouns when talking about Loki because Loki tends to be male more in appearances, and also partly because it’s what I’m used to, but when Loki is clearly female I’ll of course switch to she/her. I have seen people use they/them pronouns for Loki too. I don’t think Marvel has ever said what pronouns Loki prefers though.
Speaking of which: I realize the “Sex: fluid” on Loki’s info card in episode 1 was probably foreshadowing Sylvie, but I kind of want to also read it as a nod to Loki being genderfluid. (Loki is also a shapeshifter, so gender would = sex in this case.) Whether it would be a nod to specifically comics Loki or also to MCU Loki is anyone’s guess as of now. We’ll find out I guess, or if it turns out to be strictly headcanon than it’s whatever floats your boat. :)
Back to the train scene!! Sylvie loudly protesting that she can’t sleep near people she doesn’t trust and then promptly falling asleep across from Loki a few minutes later made me emotional. ALTERNATE REALITY TWINS. Also VERY much a parallel to Loki falling asleep across from Mobius last episode.
Loki realizing that Asgard was really his home and his family really was his family only to also realize that he’ll never see either again and deciding to handle this by getting ABSOLUTELY DRUNK is SO ASGARDIAN OF HIM. I cannot. He even did the “Another!” *smashes glass* thing just to bring the point home.
Oh gosh, LOKI SINGING IN ASGARDIAN. FEEEEEEELS. I know, it’s actually Norwegian. I wonder a bit why they didn’t use Icelandic instead? Anyway, this was lovely and I love that going by the translation it’s a song of longing to go home, and it mentions Idunn’s apples of immortality. Apparently the full version of the song is going to be on the soundtrack and I’m so excited for that.
Loki’s metaphor of “love is a dagger” was actually quite good, he and Sylvie just lost the thread of it right at the end there. I wrote about this in tags somewhere, I’ll copy it in here later.
Edit: here’s an edited version of what I wrote on this post: This was a great metaphor until it got away from him. So close to the point (heh) and then they veered right away. Let me finish this for them: “Love is a dagger. It’s a weapon for far away and up close. You can see yourself in it. It’s beautiful. You have to give it to the right person.” So what this scene tells us about Loki is that he’s been hurt by love because it hasn’t been real. Or hasn’t felt real to him. Maybe he’s given it to the wrong people, or maybe he couldn’t tell who the right people were. (And if this is in reference to his family then I think he’s still too close to the revelation of his identity to be able to think clearly about the situation. Because his family DID love him! Even Odin. He just lost sight of that with everything happening.) Love is also about trust. And Loki doesn’t trust easily.
I really love this quote and this scene. Kinda want to do a “Love is a dagger” graphic of i ever have time.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if Loki and Sylvie come back to this conversation and come to a more satisfying conclusion. I hope that happens actually.
Sylvie using her headpiece against an opponent in the train fight instantly made me think of Wonder Woman. A+. Also, I haven’t mentioned yet but I love the fact that Sylvie’s headpiece looks exactly like God(dess) of Stories Loki’s from Agent of Asgard. Loki’s Ragnarok headpiece definitely had big AoA Loki vibes, but Sylvie’s headpiece is much closer- mostly it’s smaller, which is very Agent of Asgard Loki in general, but the one horn being cut off is specifically a God(dess) of Stories Loki thing and I love that they pulled from that.
Loki throwing the dagger and missing because he’s drunk was hilarious. Not good for Sylvie, but hilarious to watch. Don’t fight while drunk, Loki. Also, he threw “love” at Sylvie and I laughed when I realized that.
I didn’t realize until I saw a parallel gifset of it why Loki carefully going up to Sylvie after her scream felt so familiar- it’s just like how he went up to Thor after Thor overturned the table in Thor 1. The CONTINUINTY!! Absolutely amazing.
While trying to save the Ark Loki was probably thinking a lot about what he saw in the TVA clips of his own people trying to escape Asgard during Ragnarok and that hits kind of hard.
Loki apparently using telekinesis to stop the column from falling on him and Sylvie threw me off a lot until I saw another gifset that included the moment in Thor 2 (trailers only, I think) when he finds out Frigga is dead and all the furniture close to him breaks and flies away from him. The pose was even the same as when he stopped the column. I think he can sort of... push things away from him? (Almost like a Force Push 🤔) He seems to need to stop and tense up his arms while he does it though. And it doesn’t have the green effect the rest of his magic does, which is odd.
Speaking of Loki’s powers, I’ve said this in tags for sure but I’m so happy they’re FINALLY letting Loki hit people with green magic bolts. He does tend to prefer more subtle uses of magic, but I still can’t believe it took over 4 movies for that to happen. It’s kind of a no-brainer magic attack- probably exactly why Loki prefers other things- but you’d think he would’ve done it at least once after 4 movies.
I saw a post point out that by the end of the episode, Sylvie has lost both her headpiece and her cloak/robe thing, which makes me wonder if she’s going to get a new outfit by the end of the show. Or at least different accessories. I’m also curious if she’s going to take up the Enchantress moniker by the end of the show.
Finishing this with theme analysis and theory time:
The revelation that TVA agents used to be variants and were somehow reprogrammed makes so much sense. There’s something immediately shifty about the idea of 3 Time Keepers dictating the fate of everyone in infinite multiverses, and this just solidifies the hint that the Time Keepers are going to be the overall Big Bads. Which makes sense, narratively! But this shifts the TVA agents from villains to victims. Mobius gets to stay sympathetic and so does Sylvie, AND once the TVA agents find out about their origins it puts the same choice onto them that Loki has. They all have a choice now about who they’re going to be. They’re not who they thought they were, but are they going to let themselves be defined by what other people (here, the Time Keepers) think they should be, or are they going to be who they want to be.
This is exactly what Loki: Agent of Asgard is about, by the way. And I know I said in the last post that Loki’s greatest villain is himself, but I’m going to amend that because I didn’t say it quite right. Loki’s greatest villain is his evil self. Loki the god of evil, the Loki that is the villain. Loki (and all the other Asgardians) in Agent of Asgard is genuinely a god, and AoA tells us that gods are defined by belief- they are what people believe them to be. That’s how they exist. So because so many people believe Loki is an evil villain, the universe tries to twist him to fit that role. The plot of AoA is Loki trying to avoid that fate, to be better, be who he wants to be. It’s a meta story. It’s Loki trying to break free of the narrative he’s been part of up until that point. And eventually he manages to break the fourth wall itself and take control of his own narrative by becoming the god of stories. He controls his own story and it no longer matters what other people think he is, only what he thinks of himself. Nobody else gets to change or define him.
AoA’s villain is a future version of Loki that does go back to being evil. He’s basically the cosmic force- destiny, the narrative itself, etc- that’s trying to fit Loki into the “evil” box personified. Loki is seemingly taking that idea and subbing in a different personification for that same idea of lack of choice: the Time Keepers. We know from the Miss Minutes short in episode 1 that the Time Keepers want one timeline. We don’t know if that’s actually to prevent a multiversal war like the short suggests or if that’s just propaganda. When Loki tries to find out more about the war or about the beginning or end of time in episode 2, he can’t access those documents. Something doesn’t seem right there.
Edit: Also, in episode 2 Loki compares the TVA to Asgard by saying both the TVA agents and Asgardians are equally stupid. The reveal of who the TVA agents are adds a new dimension to that comparison. They both see themselves as guardians of the world around them, special, but really they’re no more special than the people they’re fighting to protect. Or in other words, they’re only as “special” (“heroic,” really) as they make themselves.
Also an edit: damn I just realized the continued stupidity of R*gnarok having Fenris and Odin in the same movie and Odin dies but get killed by Fenris. Asgardians have a saying about watching for wolves’ teeth.
I’ve seen the theory around that Sylvie might be a former TVA agent (which seems to be backed up by the midseason trailer I very belatedly saw, oh my GOD TINY SYLVIE!!!!! But also oh no tiny Sylvie at the TVA :() and I really like that. It makes sense. Maybe she went rogue because she realized the TVA is preventing people from choosing for themselves. Maybe she even knows what it is the Time Keepers actually want. Or maybe she’s doing this just for herself because she didn’t enjoy being brainwashed by the TVA and she doesn’t like being told who to be! That is after all part of “what makes a Loki a Loki,” even if she doesn’t use that name anymore.
I’m also wondering (hoping?) if maybe her being a former TVA agent could explain why she’s a mashup of different characters, instead of it just being Marvel mashing characters together because they can. This is mostly wild speculation, but could the TVA possibly have put multiple people’s timelines/memories inside her head? What if she’s in universe an amalgamation of a Loki, an Amora, and/or a Sylvie?
We’ve had some clips of what looks like a Thor 1 era Loki in front of the throne on Asgard- which looks different to me; maybe Loki redecorated? We’ve also gotten a shot of Loki in front of a ruined NYC skyline, including Avengers Tower. Maybe we’ll get an episode where Loki wins and we’ll see different timelines where he wins in different ways, until he realizes that this isn’t actually what he wants?
Whoops this got long??? Thanks for reading if you read this far!

BOOKS
Favourite book genre?
There's a special place in my heart for a good high-fantasy, always was and always will be. But it's hard to narrow it down - I simply read books I enjoy. Which means, sometimes there's going to be a good occupation-era drama.
Favourite writer?
For all my love to Neil Gaiman and Ladislav Mňačko, Lenona Štiblaríková just gets it. I don't know, it may be because I see myself in her characters, but I truly do enjoy the genlte sarcasm of her wrintings.
Favourite book?
Jozova Hanule. I don't know where to start. It was written by Květa Legátová, is a stand-alone novel taking part in a compilation of stories taking time and place during the occupation at the czecho-slovak frontier. (I was really thinking about putting Smrť sa volá Engelchen (Death is called Engelchen) by L. Mňačko, and....now that I look at it. They have a rather similar vibe, but Jozova Hanule is a lot kinder.) It tells us the story of a nurse named Eliška (she later takes on the name Hanule) and her patient Joza. We have arranged marriage, their growing up together, the most beautiful love story I can dream of and just. Ah.
Favourite book series?
The Kingkiller chornicles and the Inkworld. And, obviously, The Witcher and all and every book and bookseries about Rogan the Black by Juraj Červenák. And while we're with him, then also Cpt. Stein and notary Barbarič.
Comfort book?
Bratislavská bludička by Lenona Štiblaríková, by all means. It's the epithome of chill for me. This, The Hobbit and Jozova Hanule always have my back.
Perfect book to read on a rainy day?
Hm. La sombra del viento. It just fits.
Favourite character?
To keep it simple, Joza from Jozova Hanule. The gentle giant, simple yet kind man. Just like Hanula, I was waiting for the moment he would break this charm around him - and he did, in a way. The only violence we see from him is when he's protecting others (his mother always tod him that he is too stong, so he can't beat others back - and this had made him into kinder man than any other in the village). I will, till the death of me, talk about the moment he was telling his wife-to-be stories to take the pressure off, and about the scene with the lamp. THE LAMP!! Or when she had thorns in her legs and he was doing his best to take them painlessly out. Just. I cry every time.
5 favourite quotes from your favourite book(s) that you know be heart?
Slovo! (Slovo.) The meat is burning. (Zlato Arkony I - Juraj Červenák)
Tehus anthausa eha! (The Name of the Wind - Patrick Rothfuss)
as it is, I am in another country and far from my library, so this will have to suffice.
hardcover or paperback | buy or rent | standalone novels or book series | ebook or physical copy | reading at night or during the day | reading at home or in nature | listening to music while reading or reading in silence | reading in order or reading the ending first | reliable or unreliable narrator | realism or fantasy | one or multiple POVS | judging by the covers or by the summary | rereading or reading just once
TV AND MOVIES
Favourite tv/movie genre?
No idea, nothing concrete, but historical, fantasy and scifi are alwasy a good way to go.
Favourite movie?
Alien and The 13th Warrior. But it's hard to choose, if there are gems such as Pacho, hybský zbojník (Pacho, Hybe's highwayman) or Občanský prukaz (Identity Card).
Comfort movie?
Hm. Depends. 13th warrior and Howl's Moving Castle are on the top of that list. Oh, And Then We Danced.
Movie you watch every year?
Pelíšky (Cozy dens). Brotherhood of the Wolf. Millenial Bee.
Favourite TV show?
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency and Ragnarok.
Most rewatched TV show?
Sense8.
5 fave characters?
Herger from The 13th warrior (I swear I will read the book soon), Merab from And then we danced, Paul from The half of it, Aki from AO: The last hunter and Bilbo.
tv shows or movie | short seasons (8-13 episodes) or full seasons (22 episodes or more) | one episode a week or binging | one season or multiple seasons | one part or saga | half hour or one hour long episodes | subtitles on or off | rewatching or watching just once | downloads or watches online

Favorite ND Soundtracks
Alright. I am a huge music nerd. For some time, I was a music major at college (I changed majors after having to take nine classes a semester because of all my ensembles). One of my hobbies is listening to movie and game scores. Some of the Nancy Drew games have some pretty great music. I don’t really know how I’d rank my favorites, but I’m going to list them in no particular order.
Shadow at Water’s Edge
Lovely traditional Japanese sound. Very calming yet it just sounds like someone is watching you.
The scenes in the city have some great music. Honestly? They are bops.
The music fits perfectly with the ambiance and mood. The music at the ryokan is haunting and beautiful and the music in the city is fun and carefree.
“Kasumi” is so wonderfully haunting and beautiful and horrifying at the same time. It’s beautiful and peaceful, and it makes me feel both sad and like I’m gonna die from being attacked by the yurei.
Some of the tracks in this don’t sound like they’re from a Nancy Drew game. They sound like they came straight out of a horror film.
Secret of Shadow Ranch
Western. Soooo western. A stereotypical cowboy movie score. I love it.
It makes me feel like I’m a cowboy in the wild west.
The guitar picking is perfect in “Dirk”. I love it so much that I listened and taught myself on the guitar and I played it too much because my sister was sick of it for a long time.
The ghost town music fits so well. A perfect combination of suspense and yeehaw.
The drums in “Lands”... Perfect. And the trombones in “Danger”... Great.
Curse of Blackmoor Manor
This score. It’s amazing. It makes me feel like I’m in an old English mansion poking around and searching through hidden passages. Oh wait...
This score seems like it should be the background music for a BBC show about royalty.
Some of the music is downright terrifying. Also, the dulcimer?! That instrument is underrated and used amazingly!
The piano and strings parts are just beautiful. “Memoirs” is one of my favorites. The use of dynamics in that piece is lovely.
This is probably the only music where a recorder sounds good.
Brigitte. I still know that song so well.
Legend of the Crystal Skull
Okay. As a jazz singer, this soundtrack spoke to my soul.
They mix horror and jazz and that makes me love it sooooo much.
I just really like jazz, okay?
“Bruno” hits different. It feels like you just walked into a 1930s New Orleans nightclub holding a cigarette and wearing a fur coat.
“Bayou” give me “Gonna Take You There” vibes.
Haunting of Castle Malloy
Say what you want about the game, but the music is beautiful.
“Nursery” still gives me chills. “Map” makes me feel like I should always be watching my back. “Grand” is rightly named.
The music in the pub are bangers.
As a Celtic music fan, this soundtrack is truly wonderful.
Warnings at Waverly Academy
This one fits the environment so well. Both suspenseful and youthful.
The cello. Ooooh, the cello. *chef’s kiss*
The violin solo... It’s so beautifully creepy and unsettling with the resonance and the reverb.
It just feels like late autumn/early winter. It has that vibe and it’s wonderful.
The Captive Curse
Again, as a musician, I’ve been exposed to lots of music, and some of that is traditional Bavarian music. This one combined the mystery of Nancy Drew games with the traditional music and it was done well.
“Girls” is both beautiful and slightly tragic. The piano, the violin, the cello, the everything. It feels like I should be out there wearing a dirndl with Nancy and remember all the girls before that have died at this castle.
Speaking of castle, “Castle” is so wonderfully mysterious. So is “Mystery”, of course. And the violin in “Legend”? It makes me feel curious.
The choir in “Creature” brings a whole new vibe to the game. Kinda gave me “Duel of Fates” vibes, if you know what I mean.
The Deadly Device
It sounds like it came straight out of a sci-fi film. It also gives me Doctor Who and Thor: Ragnarok vibes.
The repeated motif in “Research” sounds like “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas”, don’t hate me.
It fits the techie nerd vibe as well as the “hello, this is murder” vibe.
Ghost of Thornton Hall
This one. Oooh ho ho, this one. It still gives me chills. The music adds so much to the game. It’s creepy enough already, but add this amazing music and you get one of the most creepy Nancy Drew games.
Oh, did I also mention that this music will bring you to tears? Yeah.
That little bit of background choir in some of the tracks?
The brass section in “Dark” has a feel of urgency.
The OPERA in the background. UGH, IT’S AMAZING. This is coming from a person who has sang opera before and DAMN is this stuff beautiful. The vocalese is amazing.
The rhyme... The rhyme.
“Past” is so beautiful and tragic and truly captivates the sadness of the entire situation.
That one time where the drums are pretty much a heartbeat? Freaks me out. Every time. I love it.
The Silent Spy
This one has amazing music and it’s also one of the plot points in the mystery.
The link between Kate and the piano is amazing. Every time I hear the piano, it’s a reminder of Kate and her presence.
Kate’s Theme is so simple, yet so beautiful.
The bagpipes in the background add a whole new layer of sadness. I am one of those people who actually loves the bagpipes.
It feels like a FRICKIN SPY/HEIST MOVIE.
At the same time, SCOTLAND.
The use of the electric guitar is very lovely.
Labyrinth of Lies
I love it. I love it. The music belongs there.
The use of traditional Greek inspired music is wonderful and really helps with the entire ambiance.
“Souls” sounds like it belongs in the underworld.
Sea of Darkness
Hoooooly moly, I love this music. The strings, the choir, the woodwinds, the brass? Everything.
This music makes me want to go sailing.
“The Word I Couldn’t Keep” is still an amazing, beautiful song and no one can tell me otherwise because I am right.
The music in the ice caves, “Waiting” is absolutely amazing. The reverb makes it sound like it’s actually coming from inside the caves.
Midnight in Salem
Again, say what you want about the game, but the music was amazing.
Okay, they had some bops and bangers in this game. I was grooving to these tunes.
It sounds so Halloweeny. It’s so delightfully creepy. It sounds like a Danny Elfman soundtrack and I am HERE for it.
The use of the harp in these tracks is wonderful. It sounds like they also used chimes in here, which fits well.
“Feelings” is so beautiful. Another one of those hauntingly beautiful tracks that hits you in the feels.
“Family” instantly transports me from wherever I am to a small town in the mid-autumn with a little creepy vibe.
I got GTH vibes from some of these. I loved it.
The Phantom of Venice music during Ned’s phone call was superb. I heard it and instantly had flashbacks to Nancy’s not-quite-stripper days.
Seriously. Danny Elfman vibes.
Feel free to add on!! I’d love to hear more about what other people think of the soundtracks.

On MCU, Star Wars, Star Trek and feminism and queerness (or lack thereof...)
So this is all taken from a conversation I had with a good friend on Discord and just thought I’d rearrange it, clean up my thoughts, and share it here. I left her comments out, so these are just my opinions.
This will probably be tagged as “reylo critical,” but I’m not anti-reylo, anti-reylo fans, or anything like that. In fact, reylo fans probably agree with me that the relationship needed a lot MORE than what it was given, which is why a lot of them have probably turned to fanfiction to continue the story...
(Spoilers for Star Wars, MCU, She-Ra, Picard, and I guess my own series?? 😂)
So... I'm kind of over big Marvel movies, and not just because of Endgame. (Everyone I’m sure knows why I hate Endgame.) And, yeah, I'm definitely more into the whole series thing, especially after stuff like The Mandalorian and Picard.
Which I guess is to say... I’m just kind of over big franchise movies in general.
I think I'm just really, really into seeing characters develop, grow... form relationships (not necessarily romantic).
We did see that somewhat with the first few Marvel movies, which was why I was so into it for a while. The recent Star Wars trilogy I feel failed spectacularly at it. And late Marvel has lost the magic I feel. Many of the relationships were just... sort of lost in all the explosions, I guess. Bucky and Steve’s friendship is the BIGGEST casualty, but there were a lot of other friendships and relationships that just kind of petered out.
And films like Black Panther and Ragnarok were so good almost because they didn’t really fit in with the rest of the franchise.
Also, and this seems like it’s going off on a tangent, but it’s really not. But executives seem more willing to "let" queer characters exist in series than in films.
Also also, a lot of the time homophobia is wrapped up in sexism, and so lack of queer characters can go hand-in-hand with lazy treatment of female characters.
For example, the sequel trilogy just should've leaned SO HARD into the Rey/Poe/Finn friendship. That was the beauty of Luke/Leia/Han... yes, two became a couple, but not to the detriment of their friendship with the third. In fact, it literally made them a family. The same thing could’ve happened with Rey/Poe/Finn. Instead, the films are WAY too focused on pushing heterosexual romantic relationships, whether requited or not.
There's a part of me that's annoyed at Reylo fans, even though nothing's their fault. But like... those of us who usually become enamored by wlw or mlm pairings, we pretty much NEVER get to see them come to fruition. And often we're told, "you're just seeing things that aren't there” or “can’t two guys/two girls just be friends??” Yet for Rey and Kylo/Ben... honestly, their chemistry/connection is as tenuous as, say, Finn and Poe (who I don't particularly ship, but, like, I get it?). Except, since it's a straight pairing, of course that ship ends up sailing.
And then you had one-sided Rose x Finn, and one-sided Finn x Rey, and it's just like... it's exhausting. For gods' sake. Can't guys and girls just sometimes BE FRIENDS??
Even in the original trilogy you had Luke kissing Leia and lording it over Han (before they knew they were twins, of course). It just put Leia in this ugly, traditional "prize" role for each of the guys, which, really is just... gross.
But I'll admit, stuff like that is what makes me passionate about storytelling. Though I'm no George Lucas, so no one but a handful of wonderful fanfic readers will ever see my stories 😋
I'm already planning another [🚨🚨SPOILER!!!🚨🚨] wlw romance in the next book, and I briefly thought, but I already have two... is it okay to have a third? And an angry voice in my head was like, YOU'RE GODDAMN RIGHT IT'S OKAY.
And it’s just like... Poe seemed to genuinely flirt with Finn. So their interactions were light and healthy and sweet. But Kylo and Rey, yeah, that was honestly abusive. I'm not saying a romance can't form from an initial relationship like that. But it shouldn't be forgiven quite so easily. Or, let's say... I can believe that Rey is sweet and inexperienced enough to immediately forgive him b/c she's SO excited he's turned to the Light side. But the film shouldn't then just let him DIE, especially in noble sacrifice. His character requires redemption. It needs growth.
I want to then actually see them trying to be together, and him still having flashes of rage, and her coming to terms with all the evil he's done. And maybe their relationship survives that, maybe it doesn't. Meanwhile, it could be juxtaposed with Finn and Poe, who squabble like a married couple, but never truly hurt one another, and whose relationship becomes solid and sweet.
But when it comes down to it, that will never happen; it could have never happened. Because one of those pairings is straight and hence it became canon. And the other pairing is not-straight, and hence it NEVER had a chance at becoming canon.
And the fact that we’re talking about three guys and only one girl is also a little hint into where all this homophobia stems from in the first place: sexism.
(Maybe that’s why the only franchise I can think of that has the two main characters ending up in a same-sex relationship is from a SERIES and a feminist one at that: She-Ra.)
Anyway. It’s great that Seven and that other lady (whose name I can’t even recall) end up together at the end of Picard because that’s more than would ever happen in a Star Trek film. (For fuck’s sake, Hikaru Sulu was allowed a five second scene with a man who may have been his husband but it’s not like it was obvious or anything, and that’s the extent of the gay, ladies and gentlemen and folks.) (And oh god, don’t get me started on the policing of queer characters that comes in at all angles from the community, and that’s why we have that totally shitty storyline in Discovery. That guy’s husband should’ve stayed DEAD because those two have ZERO chemistry with each other. And okay, I’ll say it: the dead guy can’t act!)
So, yeah, Seven and her new girlfriend. Like, it’s great they’re together. But I’ll cheer when this happens to a main character and his, her, or their significant other. I probably shouldn’t hold my breath.

MCU, Endgame and Writing
I’m a writer. I love to write. It’s my passion, my own personal therapy. I love create worlds and characters and write stories. Everything that I write is an extension of myself. And when someone comments on any of my stories saying how much they liked it or how much they got involved in the world that I created, is the best feeling.
I spend hours and days organizing my stories, writing down the world, the timeline (especially when I have more the one story in the same universe), the characters, choosing names and personalities for my characters. Everything to make sure that I won’t lose myself on my own story. And when I have some new idea, I check to make sure that it’ll fit in what I already have.
It’s hard to write, it’s not an easy thing to do. And many times, my characters grow and go to paths that I hadn’t plan for them to take. But that is the magic and the beauty of writing: to create something that creates a life of its own. And I respect the path that my characters choose for crazier that this may sound.
All this is rant is to say that I think that this is what is lacking in the MCU: passion. Passion for writing, for create and tell stories, to create worlds so real that the audience will desire that they could go to these worlds. It lacks respect for the characters, for the path that they already took and the changes they passed, for how much they already grown. Organization between the stories, respect for the continuity.
For what I can see the MCU became only two things: fun and shock value. And I think that Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame illustrate this.
  THOR: RAGNAROK
There is not one single serious subject in Ragnarok. Everything became a joke.
Loki’s attempted suicide? A joke to entertain strangers.
Loki’s sacrifice and trauma? A play.
Bruce’s fear of hurting others as the Hulk? Disappeared.
Bruce’s discomfort in be on another planet? A joke.
Asgard destruction? Is followed by an empty joke.
Odin’s past as a conquer? Is not even discussed properly. Is just put there for the sake of having something to “criticize” (and not even this is made in a serious way).
All the deaths caused by Hela? The Warrior’s Three’s deaths? Who cares? They not even have lines. Thor doesn’t even recognize they are dead.
Loki himself is turn into a joke. A character in its entirety is turn into a joke for the sake to make the “hero” look better (I have another post where I discuss how Thor’s actions in Ragnarok put him closer to a villain than a hero)
Everything in Ragnarok is made to entertain and to make the audience laugh. It’s not made for the audience to think. Is just fun. An empty copy of Guardians of the Galaxy (a movie that can balance serious subjects and fun). And I’m sorry but I like stories that make me think. I like stories that respect they characters and its own continuity not that “respectful disrespect” everything that came before.
  AVENGERS: ENDGAME
All the deaths and the time travel in Endgame, for me, serves just a shock value. The movie itself has a vibe of “let’s shock our fans” instead of “let’s give a proper end to these 10 years of stories and these characters”
Thor’s depression became a joke.
Natasha’s death could be avoided or made more heroic and with a respectful funeral.
Tony didn’t need to die.
The time travel plot didn’t need to be there (All the deaths in Infinity War didn’t need to happen – they also were only for ‘shock’. After all, anyone truly believed that those characters were going to remain dead?)
Thanos is a forgetful enemy.
Steve entire end doesn’t make sense on his own arc.
And the directors and screenwriters be unable to agree on what happen on the screen doesn’t help either and make me have even more certainty that the story wasn’t planned as an end to a decade of stories but only as product designed to make the audience cry, to shock them. To “hit them in the feels”. It ended being a flawed and nonsensical story that let a lot of fans angry.
Endgame, as Thor: Ragnarok, failed in respect what came before – the paths took by the characters, the changes they passed, they traumas and overruns.
It failed in respect the actors – is a disrespect to give fake scripts and don’t tell your actors what is going to happen on the scene.
It failed to respect the fans by only want to shock them instead of giving them a well thought story and a proper end to their favorite characters.
(Ragnarok also failed in the last two – Tom Hiddleston and Loki’s fans more specifically).
The MCU lacks passion for storytelling and respect for they own characters, for the actors and for the fans. Hence, the MCU lacks a heart. Their movies are just products to them, and I guess their movies are already suffering because of that. They are not the compelling stories of Phase 1 with interesting plots and complex characters. They are just movies.
‘Fun’ movies.
‘Shocking’ movies.
Empty movies.

07. what’s your dream job ??
uh, i don’t have one? i mean yeah, i’d love to be a writer, or game dev, or a narrative director on a game, or direct, write, or act in movies or television, but like…i could live without any of that stuff. i just want to make a decent living, be able to own a house, not completely hate my job. yknow, not a glamorous life but a good one.

16. what’s your favorite character of yours to play ?? which do you think you’re most like ??
oh man, uhh i really enjoy writing chrissy & theo. they both speak to me. but tbh i’m not much like any of my characters? i’m boring af so i tend not to make any like me lol. i am kinda like theo in the sense that i’m quiet, and really just try to be a good person. other than that i’m most like jason solely based on the fact we’re both human lol
17. what’s your sexuality ??

captain marvel (thanks to dani lol). only two months late but it was worth the experience haha.
19. what’s the worst injury you’ve ever had ??
thankfully i’ve never really hurt myself too terribly except for a broken wrist, but between the ages of 10-17 i’d occasionally hurt my back by sitting weird, usually in an attempt to play video games without the glasses i desperately needed lol. once when i was like 11 i laid belly down on the couch with my elbows up on the arm of it for like three hours, which messed me up for days, then a few other times i hurt myself, but another bad one when i was 17, i had my back curved while sitting and propping my laptop up on my knee, tried to move and literally just cried, crawled on the floor, and laid there all night until i forced myself to move in the morning. lol luckily it hasn’t happened since i lost a little weight.
20. what’s a random or interesting fact about you ??
uhm, nothing? i literally can’t think of one, i’m dull af. i uh.. i replaced my own cpu cooler once? lmfao
21. do you listen to music while you write ??
sometimes. a lot of time i just like the silence or ambient background noise, but if i’ve got a fitting playlist for the vibe of what i’m trying to write, i’ll use it!
22. are you a morning, day, evening, or night writer ??
i’m a never writer, apparently v___v but lol ideally a night writer, my best work is between the hours of 12am & 4am, but my sleeping schedule is so inconsistent, and so is my dad’s who spends literally every waking moment of his telling me different stuff he wants done, so it’s tough to hit that sweet spot. i write whenever i get a chance tho.
23. have you ever roleplayed intoxicated ??
lol nah i’ve never even had a drink. like what teenager doesn’t have a drink at some point?? i told you i’m lame.
24. what language or languages do you speak ??
english, barely. and assassin’s creed 2 taught me some italian swears. and ac: odyssey has had me occasionally dropping “malaka” bombs since the day i first played it haha.
25. how long have you roleplayed ??
officially, about 9 years. i started at 11 on myspace, rping dragon ball z stuff. but basically about 12 years, if you count how from the ages of 8-11 i’d put an anime pic up on my myspace, pretend i was older, and talk to roleplayers i didn’t realize were roleplayers lmfao.
26. favorite roleplay genre ??
i like pretty much anything, tbh. as long as it’s well thought out, has an interesting plot, or whatever. sometimes it doesn’t even need that, it just needs to catch my eye or line up with something i’m looking for. but yeah, supernatural, multi-fandom, sci-fi, romance, town rps, high school/college rps, anime rp (well, pokemon mostly), harry potter… i’ve done it all tbh and don’t particularly have a favorite.
27. one sound you hate & one you love ??
the sound of cotton stretching is the absolute worst thing to me. or scratching cotton. idk, it just sends chills up and down my spine and makes my hands feel weak lmfao. i’m weird. i really love the sound of rain, or fire crackling, or like “ambient” harp or ukulele music.
28. do you believe in ghosts ??
short answer, yes. long answer… i’m pretty sure i was friends with a ghost girl as a kid?? like no joke, even looking back at it through rational “adult” eyes, i’m still convinced. my fam moved into a new apartment, and pretty much right after that i started having dreams about a girl my age at the time (11-12). i’d never seen her before but the dreams would be like just conversations, like i was visiting a friend or something. i don’t remember them much, but i do remember the feeling of someone else in my room all the time, like you know how if someone else is around you just know even if you’re not looking at them? like that. there was even one night i was getting in bed, laid there a minute, and then i could have absolutely sworn somebody came in the room and sat down next to me on the bed because i felt the bed sink a little under their weight, but i looked and no one was there. i had a really vivid conversation/dream/thing that night. then a few nights later, for the first time since moving there i didn’t have one. the next morning my dad was really freaked out and said he fell asleep in the chair, but woke up and couldn’t breathe, and felt cold little hands over his mouth. he rationalized it as just waking up from a nightmare but i didn’t think so, so that night when i went to sleep and saw her i got really upset, yelled at her for it, and woke up right after. then i never saw or heard anything even remotely similar again, like she left or disappeared or something. it’s so weird, and i know how crazy it sounds, but yeah. don’t get me started on the topic of ghosts lmfao. THEN AGAIN, like a year later we had a carbon monoxide scare, but i really doubt the two were related because that would mean there was an entire year that we were breathing it in and the monitor didn’t do anything lol
29. do you believe in aliens ??
no alien story, thankfully, but it just makes no sense not to believe in them to me. like, we probably don’t have them on earth, and we’ve probably never encountered any, but it’s as close as you can get to a mathematical certainty that there’s some other life out there in the universe.
30. do you believe in true love ??
like, people who are just meant for each other, like romantic soulmates? nah not really. but i believe that two people can grow to truly love one another. whether it’s based off an initial attraction/infatuation, or a friendship, or both. i’d actually argue that’s a simple explanation of the biological science behind the feeling of love, but that’s an essay i’m not gonna write lol. but there’s apparently a lot of different types of love, so i guess “true love” is suggestive?
also slightly unrelated but i don’t-quite-believe-in-but-am-open-to-the-idea-of soulmates, not necessarily as two souls who are just meant for each other romantically and always end up together, but more as two or more souls that gravitate toward each other to make up the important people in each other’s lives, like family members, lovers, or close friends. but that’s more of a theoretical idea/possibility than an actual belief of mine.
31. do you hold grudges ??
um, yes. lol i try not to, and i really do want everyone to be their best/happiest selves, but some people man… some people can take a long walk off a short pier lmao
32. do you have any obsessions right now ??
PO KE MON GOTTA CATCH EM ALLLLL. also… life is strange (thanks dani lol). supernatural. stranger things (thanks dani & steph) the 100 / clexa / becho  (thanks steph). lucifer. captain marvel (thanks dani). the song “creep” by radiohead and all its covers (tom ellis, haley reinhart, etc). cyberpunk 2077 (thanks dani). as you can see, i’m easily influenced lmfao.
33. do you drive & if so, have you ever been in a crash ??
nope i don’t drive, precisely because i’d definitely end up in a crash lol
34. do you like the smell of gasoline ??
uh that’s a big fat no from me, chief
35. do you prefer writing fluff, angst, or smut ??
i like it all equally, i think. i just really like writing & rp in general. i did run a smut rp once in the past tho. it gets old quick tbh and is the one of the three i can live without lol
36. are you in a relationship ??
bahahahahahahaha no.
37. grab the nearest book to you and turn to page 23, what is the 17the line ??
❝  “and why would that be?” kronos’s golden eyes glittered.  ❞
— the last olympian by rick riordan.
38. put your playlist on shuffle and list the first four songs that pop up:
1. season of the witch – donovan 2. riot van – arctic monkeys 3. busta rhymes – qveen herby 4. der kommissar – after the fire
also i gotta cheat because it’s too perfect that the next two are
5. stay – mac miller (one of my favorites ever that i forgot to mention above) 6. only in america – riff raff (i just love this ok. the video is hilarious but tw james franco for those that don’t like him)

While it’s still my birthday, talk about Thor 🤡💕
fitting to do this after that last ask, because Thor is sunlight.
if tony had a single brain cell, Thor’s name in their jet would be “Best Avenger.” because that’s exactly what he is. now i have some personal biases towards a few other avengers, but i think everyone with a brain can tell you that Thor is the best Avenger. he’s not just that though, he’s a good man and a good king, which can be difficult. we see in the first movie that he’s kind of an asshole with a royalty complex, but it took him like,,,,, a long weekend to get over that? and to become this incredible person. and unlike certain characters, he doesn’t have to learn that lesson again; Thor knows how to be good and kind and he doesn’t forget it, so in the subsequent movies, he’s learning new lesson. like in Ragnarok, when he learns that his power is more than just the hammer.
and that’s another thing, he’s this incredibly powerful being (one of the most powerful), but he’s humble (drifting into insecure when it comes to Ragnarok and his fears about being without his hammer). and sure, he says stuff like “You’re all not worthy” but you know what? that still him being humble! because he is just that good of a person! even him referring to himself as being something better than the avengers is still him being humble because he is untouchable. and that’s not just to say he’s the best avenger at fighting (he is, but that’s not all i’m saying) he’s also the kindest and the wisest. he can be so gentle with people, and the reason he’s unsure about leading asgard isn’t because he’s actually unequipped to do it, it’s because he truly wants the best for them. and that’s what true power is: it’s not lording your strength over others, its having more strength than anyone else, and still being gentle, kind, and thoughtful.
anyway, happy birthday Eliza, i’m going to think about Thor until i fall asleep tonight

Forgotten
(A/N: It’s been a tease with what I wanted to write, and maybe this will take off, or maybe not, but it’s my first solid Loki series. It’s a different take, and it’s post-Ragnarok, so keep that in mind. As always, feedback is appreciated and let me know if you want to be tagged now or removed
Pairing: Loki x Reader
Word Count: 2.5k
Warnings: None )
[Per a few requests, I recommend before reading this, playing the Goo Goo Dolls “All Eyes On Me” and then reading. But you don’t have to. Just an author’s suggestion to set the mood.]
“Beautiful…”
The face was blurry, once more just out of focus, the face you knew was waiting.
“You didn’t wake me up,”
Your hand reached out, reaching towards the hand that was extending to your face, the hand of the man who loved you. He was so close, so close you could feel his warmth, seeing the sun shining in behind his head. Your hand reached out further still, further until-
Nothing.
Wincing as you came to, you blinked a few times and withdrew your hand, looking down at it. The large bed, soft grey in color and far too large for just you, was as empty as it always was. It was that same sensation, though, that lingered. Not a dream, but a feeling. Not a memory, but a thought. The more you tried to grab it, though, the more distant it became.
Sitting up in bed you pushed back your hair, looking out the window as FRIDAY opened the blinders from the glass, showing a startlingly beautiful view of Manhattan. You’d programmed her to wake you up at a reasonable hour, especially on the days when sleep had been elusive and you wanted to ensure you didn’t fall into bad habits.
Pushing the blankets off you stood, the sensation already disappearing though the feeling of heartbreak lingered. It was hard to explain the grief one felt at an emotion one didn’t understand. But there it was.
The Avengers had found you not long after the attack in New York City years ago. You were fighting, somehow fending off hordes of those alien things. You’d known for a long time you were different, but the strength, the magic, and the agility had triggered the group to ask more. It was Thor who had realized you were a true Asgardian, but you were confused.
Truth was, it had been eight years since you had any memory of… anything.
Occasional pieces would come back to you, like clips of a movie spinning briefly through your head. You’d see a flash of a stunning blue dress, gorgeous greenery flashing by, and colors you could have only dreamed of. But they were brief. They were temporary.
Eight years ago you had come-to in a small apartment in Manhattan. You lived there, that much you knew, but who you were was a mystery. You’d wandered, a bit confused, picking up cues as best you could from the world around you. There were no real photographs except for friends (were they? They were…), a few ID cards, one with your name on it. You found everything with your name. But it became clear quickly that things were not that simple.
You’d tried fitting in, working jobs that had never asked for much regarding credentials, and yet finding you had enough money, but from where? Why was your past such a mystery? You knew things about magic, about space and time, you knew science and technology. But you didn’t even know your first name until you’d read it on a driver’s license.
It had been a blessing, then, to find Thor. He’d tried to convince you to come back to Asgard, thinking it might trigger some memories for you, but you’d declined. And for the best, you’d found out later. Frigga and Odin had refused you entry, not entirely convinced you weren’t masquerading around as an Asgardian while truly someone else. Asgard was to be protected. The point was moot, however, even after Thor had cleaned up much of the chaos caused in his absence.
Tony had found a place for you with the Avengers and you’d enjoyed your time working, honing your own magical skills. They weren’t quite as adept as what Thor had described Loki being able to do, but you’d conjured some illusions. Mostly, you’d found, you were skilled with shadow magic.
Even those times working in the labs you still felt out of place. You knew your strength was of use and your abilities were helpful, but you were lost. What would it take to find your place, you had wondered? What was it in the world?
“Earth to Y/N, come in, Y/N!” Stark had cupped his hands by your ear, yelling as you spaced out, snapping back from looking out the window.
Wincing you shoved his hands away, “Stark! Gods of Midgard! What’s your problem?” You had glared at him, adjusting your clothing as you went back to work at your station.
He grinned, stepping back, “You sound like him sometimes, you know. Thor.”
You rolled your eyes, smirking a bit, “That’s racist, Tony.”
He tossed a wrench at you and you laughed as it bounced off, hitting the ground and tinkling. You had once more been caught staring off into space. Thor had told the Avengers Loki would be returning once more from his time cleaning up some of his own messes. He was redeeming himself, Thor had said. He wanted to be good. The group had been incredibly cautious, trusting only that Thor and Strange kept an eye on him at all times in one way or another. The few times he’d been in the tower you’d never seen him. This would be the first.
Dusting yourself off you walked to the wrench, scooping it up, “So when is Thor returning with his brother?” Your accent was similar to his, your speech was well. It had been part of what had signaled Thor to begin with.
Tony tensed, visibly, “Soon. Nat and Clint are scarce today, so I’m guessing he’s here for more than just a minute.”
You took in a breath, “The big bad Loki… not so bad without the Infinity Stone,” you mused a bit.
The room was tense as Stark turned, his face changed, “He killed people, Y/N. Innocent people. He may be trying to clean up his mess but he’s got a lot of work to do before he has any semblance of trust. The man is dangerous.”
It got quiet once more, Tony, ever the father figure (despite your age difference, given you were Asgardian) and you softly excused yourself, feeling badly. You’d known, of course, the damage the man had caused. He’d almost destroyed an entire city. He’d killed countless. He’d manipulated many. But hadn’t they all? Wasn’t every Avenger guilty of a crime? Hadn’t each of them taken innocent lives under the guise of something so very terrible? What was it that made Loki so much worse?
Crossing your arms in front of your chest you got on the elevator and made your way to the living quarters, stepping out without much thought. It was hard to relate to humans, you’d found. Your own history (or lack thereof) setting you apart already. Now you felt even further separated. You didn’t understand this.
A long exhale left your lips as you continued forward, walking to the large windows that overlooked the city, the same ones from your bedroom, you sighed. This was becoming a custom of yours; brooding. The light was beginning to fade, wondering briefly if this was the same kind of light that had shone on your home once. You wondered why Midgard was where you had landed, as you always did. You wondered what brought you here. You wondered-
“Excuse me?” A voice interrupted your thoughts, startling you slightly as you turned sharply. It wasn’t a voice you recognized, though the face was disturbingly familiar. His eyes, a startling blue color, stared deeply into your own. His clothing was Asgardian and you recognized him as Loki without being told as much, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you,” he held his hands up.
You looked quietly at him, “You didn’t frighten me, Loki.”
He was startled at your softness, having expected something so different. Everyone else had treated him as a monster and he supposed it was accurate. You were the first to greet him without any hostility, and he knew immediately who you were without being told, “Y/N, Thor has told me much about you. It’s a pleasure,” he bowed his head gently.
Surprised, though not enough to show the shock, you stepped forward towards him, a draw you couldn’t quite explain except to note he was of Asgard, “I’m not as accustomed to Asgardian greetings, Loki, though if I’m to understand correctly am I not the one to be bowing my head at you?” There was a soft, playful smile on your lips.
Any tension on Loki’s body vanished and he couldn’t help the smile that replaced his look of concern at meeting a new team member, “I’m not a prince on Midgard, Y/N. Simply being polite,” he smirked.
There was a quiet moment as he looked at you, swearing to the gods above he had known your face. Perhaps it was the sun, slowly fading behind you and making you glow, or perhaps it was that he was stricken, he saw you as a goddess in that moment. He’d never been one to believe in such childish notions as love at first sight and had scoffed at Thor’s choice of Jane even before his disdain for the world of humans. But you were different. You were someone he could be with. If he wanted.
His eyes remained on you and while in other situations you might have felt discomfort, it felt oddly relieving as you stepped past him, gently placing a hand on the front of his shoulder, pausing briefly, “Come, I’ll make some tea. I’m assuming we’re waiting for Thor to return?” You removed your hand and Loki found himself stopping himself from taking your hand as it fell to your side. Instead he only nodded with a half-smile, following you into the kitchen area of the quarters.
You entered the kitchen and immediately began to put the kettle on, taking out some of the tea you’d mixed together, herbs and spices Thor had brought back on his many journeys. He watched you move, your body graceful as you found the mugs, “My brother tells me you are able to conjure magic,” he raised an eyebrow, finding himself nostalgic as he took in the scent of the tea. It reminded him of something. Of somewhere. Of some place…
Laughing a little you placed the steepers in the mugs as you prepared the beverages, “Not at the level you can, but I have had practice. No royal blood in me, that much I know,” you smirked, leaning back against the counter, Loki on the other side of the island in the kitchen, watching you.
He chuckled, “Royalty has nothing to do with talent, Y/N.” Holding out his hand, he waved it gently, watching as a single rose appeared on the marble counter next to you. Looking over at him, then at the rose, you smiled.
Reaching for it, the deep red color looking vibrant and alive, you watched as it vanished with a golden sheen. Looking back to Loki you nodded, “Perhaps I can blame my lack of talent on amnesia then,” you smirked, tapping at your temple.
Before Loki could suggest his own interventions, a man who had peered inside minds, the kettle began going off. Had he suggested it, however, you’d have noted Wanda trying had resulted in less than nothing. Even the strongest Avenger couldn’t penetrate the lack of memories. They were simply gone, much like the rose on the counter.
Filling the mugs with tea you heard the tell-tale ‘stomps’ of the blonde ‘ruler’ of Asgard coming in, a smile on his face as he stepped forward, “Y/N! I see you’ve met Loki! Ah, she’s treating you to her tea! Brother, you’re in for a treat! It’s quite like what we were raised with. Though I’m not much for tea myself,” he grinned at you.
Laughing you reached for him, pulling him in for a hug, “Good to have you back, Thor. And I’m glad you brought your brother with you,” you smiled still, pulling away.
Loki had held back the tension at watching you embrace his brother, unsure why these emotions were coursing through him. He was a man of logic and brilliance. Why he was suddenly off-balance because of another Asgardian made no sense.
Standing and adjusting his gear a bit, taking the mug as you poured the hot water inside, he nodded, “You may be the only one, Lady Y/N. I’m afraid the Avengers don’t trust me, still.” He took a sip, aware of his own misguided pursuits. But he’d made amends and had been working desperately to repair all he had done. And still he was alone. And still, he understood.
Taking a sip of the tea that was naturally flavorful and sweet in itself you smiled, “I trust you,” your voice was soft, a softness that not even Thor had heard since speaking to you at length about the world he missed. It was a softness that Loki had never heard from any other than his own kin. And it was a softness that Tony didn’t quite like as he entered.
“Yeah, not a great idea. Get to know ‘im first then make your choices. Thought we talked about this,” Tony came strolling in, passing you in the kitchen protectively as Loki stared at the man who had been one of the many to take him down.
Rolling your eyes you moved from the counter to the other side of the island to where Thor was standing, “Until he shows me otherwise, Tony, I will choose to trust what I see. And I see a man working to right his wrongs.”
Taking another drink of the tea, Loki was mostly trying to hide the smile that was dancing forth, locking eyes onto yours as he took in the deep and full flavor of the beverage, ready to excuse himself when-
“Be honest… do you love it? Is it too strong?”
He could see those eyes. Those beautiful eyes, staring deeply into his. The eyes of the woman who had loved him from the moment she had seen him. The eyes of a creature too perfect to be real.
“Be honest. I trust you.”
Almost dropping the mug, he did spill some of it, Loki finding himself shaken from his thoughts as the hot liquid dripped down. Thor looked concerned as he stepped forward, “You were gone there for a moment, brother. Are you sure Y/N didn’t spike the tea?” He smirked.
Loki shook his head, throwing on a smile, nodding, “Quite fine, just feeling tired. I believe it’s time take my leave. Y/N, a delight to meet you. Thank you for the drink,” he held up the mug.
You looked at him, confused, though nodded back as he quickly made his way out of the room and towards the quarters reserved for him.
“Beautiful.”

The MCU Generation
So I’ve been thinking about Marvel a lot lately. Specifically Infinity War. And I have some Feelings™, so I just thought I’d share. This is probably going to be long and super inaccurate and cringe-y, I don’t mean to offend anyone, but I just wanted to get it out of my system. BTW there will be lots of spoilers.
Iron Man was released in 2008, and many people including me consider it the true beginning of the cultural phenomenon that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I was eight years old when it came out, man that makes me feel old. I didn’t really know much about/pay attention to/care about superheroes much at that point, but my dad liked those kinds of movies so I had watched things like the Tobey Maguire spider man movies and Christopher Nolan’s batman movies (the first two were out at that time). They didn’t really hold much interest for me at the time. Iron man rolled around and dad seemed excited about it, but it still just seemed like another comic movie that the family would maybe re-watch if it were on TV or something. No big deal, right? Well, time went on and I started to hear talk about a bigger story. Iron man 2 came out when I was 10, and introduced nick fury and Natasha Romanoff. Still, I paid little mind to the film besides casually enjoying it like any other decent action film. Then came Thor. One year later, we got the first taste of the universe outside of Tony Stark, and that universe was much larger than I had anticipated. Looking back, the first Thor movie was definitely not the best superhero film ever made, but it did a lot of things right. Most importantly, it set the stage for more heroes who quickly joined ranks. It’s at this point that I feel the MCU really started to gain traction, at least from what I was hearing. My eleven-year-old self was beginning to view this collection of movies as something with potential, something to get excited about. In that same year, Captain America: The First Avenger hit the big screen. This is where I became truly and totally hooked. I don’t know what did it, but something about the story, the characters, or the message seemed to grab my full attention. This was the movie that had me craving the next installment. It probably helped that at about twelve years old I was starting to enter the social media world, if only in small doses. I discovered Pinterest and quickly realized that other people around my age (maybe a few years older) were talking about these movies, interacting with each other, making jokes and edits and headcanons. If I wasn’t invested in the MCU characters before then, that changed rapidly. Seeing other people’s takes on what the heroes thought or did off camera, speculation about subtext relationships, comparisons and continuations of themes from the comics, all mushed together to bring me closer to this Story than I had ever been before. So I was ready for Avengers. The Big One. The superhero movie that did what no superhero movie had done before. It brought together a cast from multiple movies into one glorious world-saving group. By this point, everyone could see that this franchise would make an impact. It truly was an entire universe, and we had just touched on the surface of this super team potential. Fans were everywhere; people at school, on the street, in commercials had their favorite heroes’ logo somewhere on their clothing or bag. There had never been (or I maybe just never noticed) such a widely spread media infatuation.
Then came phase two. Iron man 3, Thor dark world, captain America winter soldier, guardians of the galaxy, age of Ultron, and ant man. These came out between my 13 and 16th birthdays. In my opinion (back then and now), none of these movies were quite up to par with those of phase one, but nostalgia may have already been clouding my judgement, even after just a few years. However, they did give us more characters to love, and also let us enjoy learning more about our old faves. I think this phase was Marvel kind of trying to find their footing in this huge undertaking they just opened up, trying to figure out how to write their stories now that they had to feel like they were in such a large universe?? I don’t know, it just feels like Phase One took place in a box the size of a fridge, and Phase Two now had to try (or at least start) to fill out an entire swimming pool. I was still excited with every new movie announcement and was happy to watch them, but after age of Ultron I feel like I lost a bit of steam. So much that I didn’t see Antman at all when it came out. It just didn’t seem worth it.
Phase Three. Civil War. I think this movie is the turning point for the MCU, into a much darker and somber tone. Inner conflicts among the avengers that have literally been boiling for years come to a head, we see so many characters in the same place, see their stories starting to turn in different directions from each other and we, as fans, are starting to get torn apart. Team Iron Man, Team Cap, and social media is stronger than ever, and more prevalent in my life. We don’t even get a solution at the end of the movie. It ends with both sides hurt, betrayed, and with no clue where to go from here, just like us viewers. It’s fair to say that I was re-invested in this universe once more. Though it hurt, I think Marvel needed to introduce some real, lasting damage to its characters. I feel like this movie took itself more seriously as well. That was 2016. After that, we got Dr. Strange, GotG volume two, Spiderman homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Black panther. While these movies were not perfect either, I think they got a lot closer to what marvel wanted to make their universe feel like. They know what they’re doing now, and we fans got some great new characters out of it, along with a fun new take on some old ones (I’m looking at you, Mr. Waititi). I do want to mention a couple little things about some of these. Spiderman was worrisome for me, because the character had had two separate franchises in the last decade or so. That’s a pretty quick turnover. Let it be known that my fears have been quelled, and Tom Holland is my true Spiderman. (Tobey will hold a special place in my heart though. Sorry Andrew, better luck next time). AND THEN. The sensation that was Black Panther. This was when I was really getting into social media; tumblr, youtube, deviantart, all that jazz. It is also when I started college, so imagine that absolute upheaval of perspective. This movie was so important for minorities, and it caused such a stir just as my life was turned 180 degrees on its head. I didn’t know what to think. But I loved it.
Everything was going good. Marvel was hitting its stride again, life was changing, and my mind was expanding and finding out things that I had never considered before. I was 18 years old.
Then it happened. The one everyone had been waiting for for several years. “The endgame.”
Infinity War.
Let me tell you what it was like when I sat down in the theater that cold spring day. I had heard whispered rumors. About loss, about death. I brushed them off as speculation, trying not to latch onto any spoilers. I wanted to be totally oblivious as to what was about to happen, so I could experience it as mine and only mine the first time. I sat down in that dark theater with my parents, brother, snacks, tissues, and blanket. Mind you, the tissues were for allergies that had been acting up the past few days. I never cried at movies. Never. The trailers played, my family and I whispered to each other about needing to keep an eye out for this or that film when it came out. Then the lights dropped to almost nothing. We settled in for the long haul as the Marvel logo began to play. You know the one, where it shows clips of the past movies, coming together to form the name of the company? Except this one said “MARVEL STUD10S.” Did you get that? There was a number 10 in the name. I was confused for a minute or so, until it dawned on me that the Marvel Cinematic Universe had been making movies for ten. years. More than half my life. I was still in elementary school when the first Iron Man came out. And now here I was, a year into college, about to watch characters that I had grown up with and come to love, in the movie that people were saying destroyed their souls. At that moment, I knew I was in trouble. I was right. Straight off the bat, we lost my favorite villain who really just needs a hug, one who really was instrumental in bringing the Avengers together in the first place. Loki Odinson, in his own words. Right up till the end, he was a trickster, but he loved his family. He and Heimdall were the first hard losses, though seeing all of Asgard torn to shreds was a wake-up call that no one was prepared for the utter destruction that had been avoided until this film. No more clean Disney kid-friendly-ness anymore. Throughout the movie, we got to see reunions, long-awaited meetings, even more characterization and growth (geez marvel, how did you even fit that in? This is the endgame movie? How are you still teaching us new things about these people?) torture, fighting. The tension to the final battle was mounting, and at some point it became clear to me that the Avengers would not be together when this threat arrived. And as anyone who has ever seen a horror movie can tell you, splitting up only leads to death. Now, here’s where my memory gets a little fuzzy. Things were happening so fast, switching from group to group of heroes trying desperately to stave off the destruction of everything we’ve ever known. Things are going wrong all over the place, no one knows where anyone else is or what they’re doing, people we love are fighting each other because they’ve never met before now. What I do remember is when we get to the fight on Titan. Half of the Guardians, Tony, Peter, Strange. Tensions are running high. When Thanos arrives, I have no Idea what’s about to happen. They start fighting, and we finally get a demonstration of some of the more amazing feats the Infinity Gauntlet can pull off. The upper hand swings back and forth so many times, but finally the heroes get their plan to work, they’ve got Thanos on the ground, the Gauntlet is almost off. And Quill… ruins it. What else can he do? He just found out that his love is dead. So he messes everything up. Thanos gets free, pummels everyone into the ground, and then… gets the stone. Strange gives up the stone, even though he swore he would let a child die before he would ever give up such a dangerous object. What the hell Strange???? Was my immediate reaction. I knew it had to be more than just some newfound compassion for these people he met a day ago (was it actually a day?? Has all of this only happened in one short day?) Obviously the doctor has a plan, but this still seems like the worst possible idea. Now to earth. We get some truly awesome moments here; Bucky and cap’s reunion, Shuri showing off her mad science skillz, epic fight moves against hordes of zombie lizards, Thor’s entrance, his little banter with Steve, “I am Groot” “I am Steve Rogers,” Scarlet Witch dropping in at the last second with that massive power move. Everything seems like it’s going ok, and then suddenly, its not. Everything drops so suddenly into Not OK Town that I can still feel the whiplash. People are scrambling to get to each other, calling for backup, getting knocked down and thrown around, and then Thanos makes his entrance. He practically wipes the floor with our remaining heroes. The only thing standing between the universe and total ruin is Wanda. I’ve been preparing for a scene like this the whole movie, but it didn’t hurt any less to finally see it. Vision begs Wanda to destroy the stone, to destroy him, we all know that she has to give in. That’s what heroes do. So she says goodbye to the man she loves and uses her power on him. Now I don’t know about you, but I feel like I’ve seen this scenario play out before. I’m expecting someone to get there at the last minute and just fricken’ knock Thanos out cold, or maybe discover that Shuri had enough time to basically detach the stone from Vision, even if it didn’t look like it. But no. Wanda destroys the mind stone and Vision actually dies at her hands. Even after all the death that’s already happened in this movie, I was still surprised and devastated.
But they couldn’t just end it like that, could they? Marvel Studios needs to drink every last drop of pain from their fans.
Thanos moves back the clock. He takes the stone. Vision’s sacrifice was in vain, Wanda had to watch her love die for nothing. Nothing that anyone did made a difference. Since Avengers came out in 2012, these characters have been fighting to keep this evil at bay, to protect the stones, even before they knew it. And now none of it matters. Because Thanos the Mad Titan has all the infinity stones. It’s all over in my mind, I wait for the quintessential Villain Laugh™, the gloating, and then whatever evil thing Thanos has planned. But wait! Thor to the rescue with his brand-new hammer-axe! My heart leaps as he skewers the big purple raisin. He gets his revenge for Loki, for Heimdall, for all of Asgard, for us. Except. except. “You should have gone for the head.”
Wait,
snap. .
.
. My body is rigid and I can only stare unblinking in confusion at the screen. What’s going on? What did you do? WHAT DID YOU DO? Thanos disappears. Everything is quiet. “Where did he go?” Steve asks in confusion, mirroring all of our thoughts exactly.
“Steve?”
We see Bucky walking towards us, and then he just…. Dissolves. Into dust. what’s going on what was that My mind is sluggish. I don’t understand.
Wakandan warriors disappear in the wake of the battle. T’challa tries to help Okoye up but then he’s gone. Groot. Wanda. Sam. Mantis, Drax, Quill, Strange.
And oh god.
“Mr. Stark? I don’t feel so good.”  Oh god no.  “I don’t know what’s happening, I don’t want to go, I don’t want to go, sir, please, I don’t want to go… I’m sorry.”
Gone.
Through this whole thing, it is silent. No music. Just emptiness, confusion, fear.
And that’s where we’re left. The audience is motionless. I do not cry at movies, but my throat is tight like a noose and my sleeves are soaked from wiping away tears.
Like all good Marvel fans, we remain still in our seats. I try to comprehend what just happened to me as the white credits scroll over a void and dramatic music accompanies them. We wait for our first end-credit scene. Instead, what we get is a fading of the music. Avengers: Infinity War shows from the center of the black screen, and a familiar melody plays. A few slow, simple notes on a piano. The triumphant theme of our heroes, earth’s mightiest protectors. It sounds lonely now. The last note plays, and the title dusts. And I almost scream.
If you’ve read this far, wow! Thank you for reading my absolute monstrosity of a garbage post! It’s been a few months now since Infinity War, and I’ve had time to think. What I figured out was this; when I’m older-old enough to be a parent myself-and looking back on my childhood, these are going to be the movies I remember like my dad remembers Star Wars. I was so lucky to be just the right age when this all started to enjoy every single one, and to remember experiencing them all for the first time. I was just the right age to forge a bond with the characters and their world. I think it was a special kind of bond that only occurs when you’re young but not too young, one that weaves webs of innocence and nostalgia through your most transformative years, and grows with you as you become a new person, and stays with you like a friend even as you see things so differently than when you first started out. What I’m trying to say is that I feel like I grew from child to adult just as the MCU did. We grew together. I don’t know if anyone my age feels the same, but these movies feel like the first big mainstream thing that really belongs to my generation. Like they came at the perfect time to shape me. It feels like they were made for me.
