or after a year of not speaking Howard stark shows up at the SSR asking for Peggy's help finding some of his stolen gadgets, and rekindles their relationship despite the loss of the others in it.
It’s been a whole year since the war and despite all the plans they made.. They all made, Peggy hasn't so much as heard from Howard outside of the usual scandalous news stories. She was starting to believe he had completely forgotten she existed, that is until… Howard comes walking into SSR, trailed by Rose "ah agent Carter! just the woman I was looking for!" he says, walking right towards her desk.
The others stand up, hands on their guns, staring at him with a look of shock and confusion, as he just strides right into their office.
Carter looks up, "Howard?"
"Good to see you Peg, got any snacks?” he asks, looking through her desk. “I just flew in from London and I'm starved."
"Howard, my desk!" She huffs and smacks his hand a bit.
"Um, Miss Carter.. Is.. Mr S-.. Would you like him escorted out?" Rose asks. Everyone is just watching, not really seeming to know how to react to this intrusion.
"What? Oh, no, he’s no harm," Peggy dismisses.
"Don't worry there isn't anything here I don't already know" Howard waves dismissively, while eating a snack bar he pulled out of Peggy’s LOCKED snack drawer, "anyway peg I need your help, some of my... toys have been stolen and I'm having a small bit of trouble recovering them. You know I'm not really the sleuthing type, and I don't really trust anyone else. Would you help me out?"
Carter blinks a few times, before rubbing the bridge of her nose, this man will be the death of her, "I.. Oh.. Uh.. Let's get lunch."
"Ah good idea. I know this great place only a few blocks from here, got a private room and everything." Howard says, already headed for the door.
"Perfect." She gets up and grabs her bag, the others still staring with wide eyes.
"Oh you won't be missed right? This was rather sudden." Howard asks, turning to look back at her then the others.
“No, they can handle the work on their own." Not like they let her do anything of importance anyway.
"Good," he nods and takes her out
"Do you want to re-explain what you just asked me?" she asks quietly as they walk.
"Ah someone stole some... trinkets from my house, bad ones, and they're selling them on the black market, and I want your help recovering them." Howard reiterates, “I have a vault. ‘Had’ I should say. Sub-basement of my office. Triple-thick, lead-lined. It was where I kept my bad babies.”
“Bad babies?” Carter asks, cocking an eyebrow at him.
“Inventions too dangerous for anyone… Even my friends.” Howard explains
“Which begs the question, why invent them at all?”
“I can't help what I think of, but I can damn well control what I sell. At least I could until last month.”
Peggy leans closer “What happened last month?”
“I was in Monaco… with a lovely tax advisor. When I got back, I found a hole under my vault, all the way to the sewer. Somebody cleaned me out. A couple of weeks later my bad babies, they start turning up on the black market.”
“So you've come to me to help get them back, why not just go to the police or something, instead of barging into my office?”
“Oh come on Peg," Howard says rolling his eyes “we both know it would end up in the hands of your office anyway, and I wanted you to lead the case. Plus, it's not too big a jump to see me cutting a hole in my own vault and making some money on the sly. And I knew you wouldn't think that.”
She pauses before sighing, "If anything gets used... Alright. Alright, we need to start quickly. What information do you have?"
"I had Jarvis make you a whole file of all the info for you and your... coworkers... as much as I'd not like them involved, I also don't want to go to jail and if it gets out that they're being sold overseas or anything and I don't stay on top of it I'm screwed."
"Fair enough.. I will make sure this is handled. You just need to keep a clean face."
"Thank you, Peg," he says, clasping her hand in his. “I'll help the best I can as well... should I officially file it or can you handle that?"
"I can handle it." She nods
"Thank you," he says happily.
It's not long after that they arrive at a very high class restaurant, not really a place you go for your lunch break, and certainly not in your work clothes. This thought is only confirmed as they walk into the near empty restaurant. Only a few very well dressed people dotted about the grand dining space.
"oh... Howard, this is a bit much." Peggy protests, the large crystal chandeliers and mirror polished marble floors making her feel very underdressed indeed.
"It's the best place to eat, trust me." He says, just waving to the seating person and leading Peggy to a grand room labeled ‘private dining’ and closing the door behind them.
"It is a real nice change from my normal breaks." Peggy says as she sits down in one of the plush velvet chairs. “Though I'm afraid I'm a bit underdressed for such a place
“Nonsense.” Howard insists “you look amazing! Like always. And it's not like anyone but me and the waitresses can see you. And we don't judge pretty ladies, no matter what they're wearing.”
“Are you trying to charm me, Howard Stark?" Peggy chuckles.
“Maybe, is it working?” he asks, wiggling his eyebrows playfully.
Peggy pauses, pretending to consider it. “Maybe” she says with a smile.
“Fabulous,” Howard purrs, giving the waitress a polite head nod as she sets out menus for them.
“Thank you.” Peggy says to the waitress, as she opens the menu to read it over.
“Their filet mignon is amazing,” Howard says, pointing it out on her menu. “They also have fantastic lobster if that's more your style.”
“Oh both of those sound marvelous”
“Then get both. If you can't eat it all you could always bring the rest home.'' Howard says nonchalantly, like that's the only thing she would be concerned with.
“Well, since you're paying, I guess I will.” she says setting the menu down.
It's not long after that their waitress comes back to take their orders. And not long after that they’re brought plates of amazing looking food, lobster drenched in a golden sauce, steak with herb butter, chicken in some sort of mushroom sauce, soups, pineapple fruit bowls, breads, the whole shabang, all plated to look as fancy as possible.
Howard loads up a plate with a little bit of everything. “Here you are” he purrs as he hands her the plate, snatching up some pineapple for himself before starting on his own plate.
The waitress is very attentive while they eat, clearing away plates and refilling their glasses while still giving them privacy, which is rather appreciated as her and Howard catch up. Howard tells her all about the places he's been over the last year, the parties he's been too people he's met, he's been keeping himself busy without her, having flown all over the world not seeming to stay in one place for more than a week. And here she's been, sitting in the ssr covering the phones and sharing her bed with a roommate.
By the time Peggy’s done eating Howard's started in on his latest invention “it could even help you with your spy work, if you'd like to try it out.'' Howard offers, and the promise that he'd have to come back and see her again even after all this stuff is over is… tempting…
“Speaking of my work, I should really be getting back to it.” Peggy says as she stands, dusting herself off
“Oh right yes, I'll walk you back” Howard says also standing
“You don't need to walk me back, I'm perfectly capable.”
“I know you are, Peg, but I want to talk to your boss, and I want to spend more time with you.” Howard says, offering her his arm.
Peggy nods, looping her hand into his arm.
“Please come again!” the hostess calls as they leave.
“We will!” Howard calls back, blowing her a playful kiss.
Howard dips into a bakery on the way back to her office to pick up 2 boxes of donuts “as an apology for breaking in”
When they get back he sets the first box down for the telephone girls then walks Peggy back to her desk "thank you again for your help, oh here's the information I have, feel free to drop by and look at the hole in my floor whenever you like."
She nods, "Alright.. I will get this looked over and see you soon."
"See you Peggy! Don't let me down!" He says, dropping the second box of donuts off in their break room before poking his head into Dooly's office to chat.
"Don't get yourself into more trouble." Peggy calls as Howard heads out.
"Oh I plan on it!" He says as the elevator doors close, and now all eyes are on her.
"So what did he want?" Sousa asks, turning in his chair to look at her.
"You two seemed really… friendly. Didn't take you for that kind of girl Carter." Thompson comments.
She rolls her eyes and busies herself sorting the papers Howard gave her. "Mister Stark has gotten himself into a little.. Predicament with some of his inventions. Someone stole some of them and well, they're not the type that should ever be on the market." she says curtly.
"Ah, and he asked you to handle it? Think he'd want someone who actually knows what they're doing to handle it if it's that critical."
"Hey Carter! Are these donuts for us?" Krzeminski asks from the break room
"Yes, they're from Mr Stark!" She calls before sighing, "And I think you're starting to sound jealous that he asked me personally." she says to Thompson.
"Not jealous, just think he shouldn't put a woman on what seems to be a very high risk task." Thompson says with a shrug
"Fuck yeah! Mr Stark can stop by anytime!" Krzeminski comes out with 2 donuts and plops down at his desk
"Thank you Krzeminski, I will tell him that." She says while glaring at Thompson.
"Carter, can you come here?" Dooley calls from the doorway of his office.
"Yes sir?" she asks walking over to him.
"I need to discuss the Stark case with you." He beckons her in and closes the door behind them. "I am sure you know that we usually do not take personal cases, but since this is a national security concern, we will make an exception. Since Stark requested your assistance, you will take care of everything. It is your responsibility to conduct investigations, collect evidence, all of it, but no one will be mad if you need some help."
"Understood. I will say something if I do need help." Peggy nods, internally rolling her eyes.
"Right, you’re dismissed"

A/N: This doesn't follow any of the season 2 timeline lol, just some vague stuff put together for the sake of this story.

"We could always just find another ticket for her and make up a reason for her to be there on her own..."
"Yeah? Like what? At this event, anybody with the slightest hole in their story is gonna stick out like a sore thumb.”
I looked between Peggy Carter and Daniel Sousa as they talked, frantically trying to figure out what to do with me tonight. They were currently in the middle of breaking up a secret society in Los Angeles, and they had a mission disguised as a date tonight where they'd be infiltrating a fancy party being thrown by said society.
Unfortunately for them, I'd landed in their laps (pretty literally) this afternoon, and accidentally thrown a wrench into their whole operation.
One minute, I'd been doing a training mission with the Avengers. The next, I'd been falling on top of  a desk in the SSR in 1947. I still didn't know exactly what had thrown me back in time, but no matter what the cause, the fact didn't change that I was here, and would be for the foreseeable future.
I'd almost had a heart attack when I'd looked up to see THE Peggy Carter, founder of SHIELD and total badass, standing in front of me. I think I freaked her and Daniel out a little by fangirling the minute I got up off the floor, but a stranger landing in the middle of their super high-level organization probably would've landed me in the interrogation room anyway.
Thankfully, I knew Steve Rogers pretty well, and so did Peggy. I'd mentioned his name briefly when trying to explain how I knew who she was, but then I'd been able to use what I knew about Steve and the stories he'd shared with me to convince her I was telling the truth about time travel.
Since then, we'd done some brief introductions and I'd been let out of the interrogation room. I'd been given the bare minimum details of the mission to understand the conversation, and now I sat on the edge of a desk watching Daniel and Peggy talk as they tried to adjust their plans.
"Perhaps Mr. Jarvis would be available on short notice to take her as a date..." mused Peggy.
"Whoa, Jarvis? Oh my gosh, the real person Jarvis is alive and walking around right now. That makes sense," I said, mostly talking to myself.
"That still doesn't solve the problem of them not being on the guest list," continued Daniel, he and Peggy only briefly glancing my way at the outburst.
"Maybe Howard could help us secure another two."
"He already wore out his welcome with these guys to get you in there the first time."
"Did you just say Howard? As in Howard Stark?"
Peggy and Daniel groaned in unison.
"Don't tell me you're a big fan of him too?" groaned Daniel.
"His ego's already big enough as it is," Peggy agreed.
"No, it's not that, I- uh... nevermind." I pushed off the desk, waving off thoughts of Tony. I still wasn't clear on how this time travel stuff worked, and I didn't want to go telling people about Howard Stark's currently nonexistent son without more assurance it wouldn't have any crazy impact first. "Look, you guys clearly don't have space for me in this mission. The best path is a small team, specifically a couple, who can enjoy the night like a regular date while still gathering intel and handling the mission."
Peggy and Daniel shared a look, and I could see an entire conversation passing between them. I continued.
"I might not know much about the forties, but I'm still a capable adult. I'm an Av- I was on a team with Steve to take on missions around the world. I'll be fine handling myself for a bit while you guys take care of business."
"Are you sure?" asked Peggy with a frown.
"We don't want to completely abandon you. Disappearing from your own time and reappearing in another can't be easy," added Daniel.
I gave them a faint smile, momentarily overwhelmed with memories. I'd first met Steve when he'd shown up in the future and needed someone to help him adjust. I'd been a SHIELD agent at the time, responsible for liaising with Tony Stark, so they figured helping a living legend adjust would be nothing compared to that.
They'd been right, and we'd hit it off the bat. When Tony eventually formed the team, I'd been on the roster. And now, I was the one being faced with adjusting to another time.
"It's not easy," I said to Daniel, the smile still on my face. "But I also don't need babysitters when those babysitters have important, world-saving duties to attend to. I actually have a little bit of an advantage, going back in time. I took history classes and whatnot, so I at least have some idea of how this world works."
"Well, if you're sure-"
"Alright! Sousa, Marge, fear not! The cavalry is here."
I turned at the sound of a new voice, but not before I caught Peggy and Daniel rolling their eyes so far back into their heads I couldn't see the pupils. A tall, blond man in a suit was striding across the room towards us, and a second after I started sizing him up he noticed me and did the same.
"Who's this?" he asked, coming to a stop in front of us. Peggy and Daniel didn't answer right away, apparently working together to gather mental strength before entering the conversation with this guy. I just leaned back a bit against the desk and watched.
Peggy and Daniel took a second to make significant eye contact, then sighed as one. Daniel turned to Jack, and Peggy subtly shifted closer to me.
"She's somebody who does a job like ours, but from the future," said Daniel. Jack just stared at him for a minute, then looked to me, and then back at Daniel.
"Sousa, despite what you might think, I'm not stupid."
"Jack, I get that it's hard to believe, but if you actually listen for two seconds-"
Jack huffed and crossed his arms while Daniel kept talking. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught Peggy leaning in towards me, and I blocked out the boys' argument as she whispered to me.
"Y/N, I have a favor to ask of you."
"Hit me," I whispered back. Peggy sighed.
"Jack has recently had a moral epiphany," she started. I took half a second to give her a curious glance, and she just rolled her eyes in response. "It's been mostly nice, both to have him on our side and to finally have him respecting me and Daniel and anyone that's not an older man already in power.
"That said, we don't have space for him on this mission. All he's going to do is be a nuisance, and he's far less likely to agree to being benched than you."
"And I take it you have a solution for this?"
"Yes. But it would require throwing you under the bus to keep him occupied tonight."
I paused for a second, giving Jack another good look. He and Sousa were still in the middle of a heated argument while Sousa tried to convince him I was actually a time traveler, and even though they both seemed exasperated, Jack also seemed to be enjoying the back and forth. A smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.
"Peggy Carter, it would be an absolute honor to assist you on a mission," I said, turning to her with a smile. "Even if it means spending the evening learning about the forties from a slightly questionable teacher."
"You're a lifesaver," she said, giving me a smile back. She pushed off the desk, moving towards Daniel and Jack to interrupt them but shooting me a wink first. "And don't worry, I'll give you an actual introduction to the decade after this mission is over."
I nodded, then Peggy got Jack and Daniel's attention to put their argument to rest and explain the situation. Jack raised an eyebrow when Peggy told him his job would be keeping me company, but she phrased it well enough that it didn't quite sound like babysitting for either of us. Finally, he agreed, and Peggy and Daniel headed out for their event, leaving me and Jack Thompson alone in the bullpen of the LA SSR.
He stood by the windows, staring out at the traffic below as I spun around in a swivel chair. I kept looking at him, but he didn't look over at me once, at least not that I could catch. Finally, after a few more rotations, I huffed a sigh and pushed myself up. I put my hands on my hips, but Jack still didn't look over.
"Alright, I'm bored out of my mind, which should not be a possibility less than three hours after I suddenly appeared in a different time period," I said. Jack finally looked over at me, raising an unimpressed eyebrow as he did. I continued. "You're supposed to be helping me adjust to this place, since I don't know how long I'm gonna be here. Believe it or not, it didn't take me that long to adjust to this office."
He sighed heavily, but stepped away from the window anyway, stopping a few feet in front of me with his arms across his chest. He stared at me for a few seconds without saying anything, and I just stared right back. I crossed my arms to mirror him and he snorted and rolled his eyes.
"You're really from the future?" he finally asked.
"Did the twenty minutes Peggy and Daniel spent convincing you not settle this matter?"
He grunted, then finally dropped his arms back to his sides.
"Fine. What do you want to do then?"
I grinned. "Any good places to grab a drink and a dance around here?”
****************
"This is only my first week in LA, so if this place ends up being terrible, it's the city's fault and not mine," said Jack as we stepped out of the cab together. I'd taken a second to find a dress to steal from Peggy's emergency disguise stash at the SSR, since my 21st century mission clothes would probably cause a riot if I went out in them, and then Jack and I had jumped in a cab to a spot in town he'd heard about.
"Boooo," I teased as he paid the driver and we headed in together. "You can't consider the possibility of the night being a failure before it's even started! It's a jinx."
"A jinx?"
"Yeah, you know. Like bad luck."
"I know the definition of the word jinx," he scoffed. "I just think it's ridiculous you believe in them."
"Oh, yeah, of course. Actually, I didn't want to tell Peggy and Daniel this, but in the future we've discovered that a lot of things people dismissed as superstitions or bad luck are actually true. Like jinxes. Oh, and breaking a mirror? That actually will mess you up! We didn't realize it until science advanced a little further, I think in the seventies, but it's true."
Jack stared at me for a few seconds, and I stared back with a perfectly neutral expression on my face. Then, he broke into a grin and nudged me with his shoulder.
"You're messing with me."
"I definitely am."
He scoffed and shook his head, but the smile didn't drop off his face. He sighed dramatically, looking up at the club in front of us, then held out his arm for me to take.
"C'mon. You're the one who wanted to experience the time period."
I smiled up at him, then looped my arm through his. He pulled me a little closer, and I'd be lying if I said my heart didn't speed up a bit as we walked into the club together.
Immediately I got hit with the music I associated with the swinging jazz of the 1940s as we stepped into a world of men in suits and women in old-style dresses, all twirling across the dancefloor together.
"Whoa," I breathed. Suddenly, it started to sink in that I was actually in the 1940s, more than 80 years from everything and everyone I knew. A new surge of sympathy for Steve welled up in my chest.
"You alright?" asked Jack, nudging me a little as we stood in the doorway. I took a deep breath in and out, then slowly nodded. "Okay, good. Let's go get a drink.”
I huffed a laugh as he pulled me through the crowd and towards the bar. We managed to find two stools, and Jack pulled my seat out for me before I sat down. I couldn't help giving him a slightly bemused look, which he grunted about as he took the seat next to me.
"What?" he asked.
"Nothing," I said, waving him off. "Just, you know... forties."
He turned to stare at me, his eyebrows knit together, but the bartender appeared before he could question what I was talking about.
"What can I get the two of you?" asked the bartender. Jack turned to me, letting me go first.
"I'll have an old fashioned, please."
Both he and Jack looked at me for a second, but I looked right back at both of them like they were crazy for questioning it (because they were). After a second, Jack shrugged and turned back to the bartender.
"I'll do the same."
The bartender nodded, then moved away to make the drinks. I turned and gave Jack a smile.
"Thanks for buying," I said. "I didn't have my wallet on me when I got sucked back in time, and even if I did, I don't think the bartender would be able to accept the kind of bills I carry. I'm not trying to get arrested for counterfeiting a few hours into being in the past."
Jack chuckled. "Sure thing. So, an old fashion, huh?"
"Yeah. It's Ton- uh, it's my friend's favorite drink. He got me drinking them, too."
"Hm. Future sounds like a wild place."
"Honestly, I'd say 1940 is a little wilder."
The bartender set down our drinks, and Jack put a few bills on the table. Then, once he was out of earshot again, I turned to Jack with a smile.
"Cheers," I said, raising my glass in toast. "To new experiences and getting to know each other and this weird ass trip back to the past."
Jack smiled, although I could tell he was fighting it, and clinked his glass with mine before we both took a sip.
"So, Jack Thompson... tell me about the forties."
Jack and I spent the next hour talking about everything from foods that hadn't been invented yet (ranch dressing!) to the weird, national popularity of baseball and how I couldn't wait to see people start getting the memo about the NBA. Some of it was informative, even helpful, but for the most part we just... talked. Laughed. Joked around and enjoyed each other's company like people who'd known each other much longer than a few hours.
For some reason, it just felt easy. Going into this, heading out with someone who was clearly a confident, if not arrogant, man from the 1940s, with Peggy's warnings on top of everything else? Well, let's just say I didn't have the highest of hopes. But by some miracle, whether it was our equally loud and teasing personalities or that fact that I proudly didn't know anything about baseball beyond the fact that games took way too long, rather than the ignorance or indifference he had been expecting... Jack Thompson and I got on like wildfire.
"I'm just saying, when you're watching a legend play, that's the only part of the game that matters!" Jack continued, defending his baseball stance. "And DiMaggio's a legend."
"Yeah, no shit," I scoffed, rolling my eyes to go with it. Jack snorted at my language, but I caught him grinning at me all the same as he took a sip from his drink. "But, unlike in other sports, your legend's only playing for like fifteen minutes out of every hour. Still boring!"
Jack opened his mouth, clearly ready with some other comeback that would do absolutely nothing to change my position, but before he could, the band started up with something I actually recognized.
"Oh my God!" I cried, setting down the now-empty glass that previously held my second old fashioned. "This song- we have to go dance!"
"You know this song?" asked Jack, only looking slightly bemused as he set down his glass and I dragged him towards the dance floor.
"Yeah. Steve plays it all. The damned. Time," I said, finally coming to a stop in the middle of the floor. I moved to drop Jack's hand now that I'd gotten him out here, but he just squeezed it tighter and pulled me closer. "It's one of the only songs from the forties he plays that I can actually stand."
Jack scoffed, wrapping an arm around my waist as we started twirling across the floor together. "You're actually friends with him? Sousa wasn't making that whole thing up?"
"What? No. Actually, I'm the one that helped him adjust to the future not long after he woke up in my time."
Jack nodded, looking thoughtful. "So that's why you recognized Carter? Sousa said you almost fainted from excitement when you first saw her."
"No. I mean, sort of, I guess. But I would've known her even without Steve. She's only the coolest, most badass woman and intelligence pioneer the world has ever known," I said. Jack snorted, and I scowled. "What? You disagree?"
He shrugged. "I mean, I'd probably argue there are some other intelligence pioneers that deserve mention. But... I guess no, I don't necessarily disagree. Just don't mention it to her, alright? I'll deny it, and I don't need her immortalization from a time traveler being thrown in my face every time I work a case with her for the rest of time."
I laughed, and Jack gave me a knowing smile before spinning me out and away from him. He twirled me across the floor before pulling me back to him quickly. We moved in perfect harmony, picking up our pace to match the band and putting the other couples to shame. We quickly got lost in our own little world, to the point that everyone and everything except the music disappeared. When Jack sped up, I sped up a little more, and we easily met each other's challenges, stupid smiles on our faces the whole time.
When a slower song started playing, Jack and I finally relaxed the pace, forgoing the elaborate dance moves to just sway in place and catch our breaths for a minute. I was still a little lost in our moment, enough so that I didn't notice someone else approaching us until he shoved himself part way between me and Jack.
"Hey doll. Mind if I cut in?" The guy leered over me, totally ignoring Jack as he reached for my hand without waiting for my answer. I scoffed, my tired-but-happy smile instantly turning into a scowl. Jack seemed equally frustrated and moved as if he was about to step in and do something about it, but I decided to just take care of it for the both of us.
"Actually, yeah, I do mind," I snapped, fixing the guy with an unimpressed look as I snatched my hand out of his reach. He seemed incredibly surprised by my response, but I plowed ahead anyway. "I'm dancing with someone already, and even if I weren't, I have no interest at all in dancing with you. So... scram. Or beat it. Or whatever people say now."
The man just stood there for a second, open-mouthed, blinking at me in stunned silence. Then, his expression shifted into a scowl and his face started to turn red.
"I- You- How dare you-!"
"Dude, get lost," I said, crossing my arms and staring him down as I talked over him. I glanced over his shoulder to Jack, who also looked shocked but in a pleasantly surprised way, and addressed him. "What's another good way to tell someone to go away?"
He shrugged, a delighted smile growing on his face. "Take a powder?"
"Really?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. Jack just nodded, so I looked back at the rude guy. "Alright, take a powder. Hit the bricks. Take a long walk off a short pier. Other creative ways to say leave. I want to dance to this lovely song with my dance partner here, who is not you, so... yeah. Take the blatant instructions."
The man whirled around to Jack, like he expected him to say or do something to reign me in. Jack just shrugged again.
"You heard the lady. I'm not gonna tell you anything she didn't already say."
The man scowled, whipping back to look at me again. I just met him with crossed arms and a look that told him I wouldn't be budging an inch. He spluttered a few more incoherent words in indignation, then stormed off the dance floor and out of sight. I sighed, then faced Jack again.
"How wildly out of place was that for the time period? Both him and me?" I asked. Jack grinned.
"Him? Not very. You? Insanely," he said, taking my hand again as we went back to gently swaying in place. He tugged me a little closer to his chest, and I smiled. "I gotta say though, I sure enjoyed watching it."
"Good. Because I don't actually care at all, and I had a lot of fun doing that."
Jack laughed, throwing his head back before fixing me with a brilliant smile. He twirled me out and away from him again, then pulled me right back into his chest. We swayed together, closer than we'd been all night, and to my surprise I started noticing more than a few butterflies squirming in my chest as I stared up at the SSR Chief. Hm, noted the more logical side of my brain as we moved across the crowded dance floor. Nice, my heart replied as Jack's strong hand laid firmly on my waist and my hand traveled to the collar of his shirt.
Jack and I spent the rest of the night at the club, enjoying the music, the dancing, and each other's company until the place turned on the lights and threw us out. A few times, other men came up to hit on me and "steal me away" from Jack. Each time, I dressed them down and sent them on their way, and each time Jack just grinned and watched me do it. I could still tell he was ready to jump in, that his instinct was to take care of it for me, but he seemed to enjoy watching the jerks splutter and babble in shock and surprise as much as I did.
Afterwards, when we wandered back out onto the LA street together, Jack insisted on escorting me back to Howard Stark's place, where I'd be staying with Peggy. It was going to be incredibly weird staying at Tony's dad's house, meeting him and the real-human Jarvis, but I could process that later. Right now, I wanted to focus on the amazing, less-weird parts of being in the 40s. Specifically Jack Thompson, who I'd just spent a wonderful night enjoying this new time period with.
Jack hailed us a cab, and I rested my head on his shoulder and watched the city go by as the taxi took us out of the city, to the massive Stark mansion. It was basically a 40s version of Tony's Malibu house, and a pang of sadness tightened in my chest when I realized I had no idea when–or if–I would see my friends again.
I took a deep breath and shook those thoughts out of my head as the car came to a stop. All of that was a problem for later, not now. Jack got out first, holding the door for me and offering a hand to help me out, which I took. Rather than dropping it once I stood, he wrapped it around his arm as he asked the cabbie to wait and escorted me towards the house. We stopped on the porch and turned to face each other, and I realized I actually really didn't want the night to end.
"Thanks for showing me around the forties," I said, giving Jack a small smile. "It was actually really fun."
"You don't have to sound so surprised," he griped, but a smile made its way onto his face all the same. "So... I don't know how long you're gonna be here, and obviously we've got a lot of other work to do with Carter and Sousa tomorrow, but... maybe I could take you out again sometime. There's still a lot of forties you haven't seen yet."
"I'd like that," I said, a warm feeling welling up in my chest. I hesitated a second as Jack and I stared at each other on the doorstep, then decided to say fuck it and keep doing what I'd been doing all night: following my impulses. "Quick question: in the forties, if I kiss you on the first date, is that going to scare you off or something?"
Jack grinned. "It might get a raised eyebrow from the cabbie, but I sure as shit won't be complaining."
"Good."
With that, I grabbed Jack's lapels and tugged him towards me, leaning up just a bit and giving him a kiss. It was short, really just a quick peck since we'd just met, but fireworks exploded in my chest at the sensation anyway.
Jack's grin stayed in place as we pulled apart, and his hand lingered on my waist an extra second before dropping to his side. He took a step backwards, towards the waiting car, even as his eyes stayed on mine. I rested my hand on the doorknob, watching Jack and trying to stay in the moment even as he walked away.
"Welcome to the forties, sweetheart," he called as he made it down the porch steps and into the driveway. "I'll see you at work tomorrow."
I waved, a smile on my own face to match his. "Can't wait."
Jack gave a short wave and one last grin before getting into the cab. I watched as he drove away, a smile still on my own face even after I knew he couldn't see it. Finally, after the lights of the cab faded back into the LA night, I turned on my heel and walked into the house.
I'd been in the 40s for less than twelve hours, and I knew for a fact that I hadn't even scratched the tip of the iceberg on exploring the time period, or what frustrations being eighty years removed from everything I knew would bring. But, despite all that, I'd had a blast tonight, and tomorrow I'd get to start working with THE Peggy Carter. Whether I was only here for another few hours or it turned into months or longer, I couldn't help being excited at the idea of everything that was yet to come for me, not least of all my next date with Jack Thompson.

Missing scene from CATFA, based off of the movie and comments in Agent Carter:
Steve: God, if only someone loved me… Peggy: standing behind them with roses Bucky: holding box of chocolates Howard: has balloons and a card [in Agent Carter she says "I loved him too" and I know what they meant but I thought this was funny] Dum Dum: facepalms This is sad.

Necessary Evils (Tales From The SSR)
Tumblr media
Summary: As they await news of Michael Carter's surgery, (Y/N) and Jack discuss her unwanted connection to Arnim Zola and the feel of foreboding that the former Hydra doctor left in his wake.
Pairing: Jack Thompson X Fem!Reader, Peggy Carter X Daniel Sousa, Edwin Jarvis X Ana Jarvis
Word Count: 2.7k
Warnings/Disclaimers: None
A/N: Hi there! This week's surprise one-shot is gonna explore a little of Specs' whereabouts in the aftermath of Bucky Barnes' death in The First Avenger and we're gonna have some great moments between her and Jack, so buckle up! Thank you for reading, I hope you all enjoy!
Necessary Evils January 1948 Los Angeles County Hospital, Los Angeles (Previous One-Shot)
“I got you some tea from the hospital’s cafeteria.” (Y/N) was pulled out of her silent reverie by Jack taking a seat beside her and offering her a disposable paper cup, the concerned gleam in her boyfriend’s blue eyes accompanied by the smallest of smiles for her benefit. “Earl Grey and two teaspoons of honey; I know how much it helps when you get one of your stress headaches.”
(Y/N), touched by his thoughtful gesture, reached over and gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “Thank you, sweetheart.” She reached for the cup and after taking a long sip, she sat back in the uncomfortable waiting room chair with a frustrated sigh. “I hate this. The longer the surgery takes, the more I’d like to burst into that operating room and re-arrest that Nazi bastard before he tries anything funny with Michael.”
Beside her, Jack nodded as he patiently listened to her threats and threw Peggy – who was anxiously pacing across the hospital waiting room while Daniel unsuccessfully attempted to talk her into sitting down – a furtive glance before replying, “I don’t think this Zola guy would risk a lifetime imprisonment or execution by trying to bump off Carter mid-surgery, Specs. I mean, Stark and half a dozen MP’s are watchin’ him and the neurosurgeons like hawks as we speak, and he’s not gonna jeopardize the sweet deal the JIOA cut for him for something as low-stakes as this.”
“I wouldn’t call any of this ‘low-stakes,’ Flyboy,” (Y/N) murmured, looking around the fully-occupied waiting room and reflexively tightening her grip on her cup of tea; she, Jack, Peggy, Daniel, and the Jarvises, along with over a dozen uniformed SOE officers and SSR officials, were gathered at Los Angeles County Hospital for the long-awaited surgery that would theoretically restore Michael Carter’s mind to what it was before the brainwashing that Hydra subjected him to during the war. Several of the SOE officers served alongside Michael and had volunteered to travel from England to be with their fellow soldier in his time of need, but Peggy was understandably the most concerned of them all; Michael made his younger sister promise not to contact their parents about his staged death in 1941 and sudden reappearance until it was confirmed that the dangerous surgery was a success, wanting to prevent Harrison and Amanda Carter another heartbreak on the off-chance that Arnim Zola and the team of neurosurgeons failed and he passed away on the operating table. The Carter siblings spent several minutes alone with one another before they wheeled Michael into the operating room and since then, Peggy hadn’t been able to stay still. I’d be the same way if Freddie’s life were in the hands of that Nazi son of a bitch, (Y/N) thought to herself and one of her hands moved upwards to caress the locket containing her deceased brother’s photograph as she sympathetically watched Peggy continue to pace.
“You know what I mean.” Jack scooted closer to her side and when she finally looked over at him, the look of concern in his blue eyes was as prominent as ever. “Look, I get why Peggy’s taking all this personally…but I can’t figure why you are, too. You can talk to me, baby…” His hand moved to rest on her shoulder, and (Y/N) could feel the comforting warmth of his touch through the thin material of her blouse. “Whatever you’ve gotta say, I’m here. And if you don’t feel up to talkin’ just yet, then I’ll still be right here with you.”
(Y/N) lowered her gaze to her lap and spent several moments mustering the strength to speak, her voice wavering as she recalled some of the darkest moments of the war, the ones that she wished she could forget forever but sadly never could. “I helped capture Zola. I was deployed with the Howlies in the Swiss Alps, and we were tasked with finding and capturing Zola to interrogate him about Schmidt’s plans. Morita intercepted several radio transmissions from Hydra and after I decoded them, we had confirmation that Zola was on a train scheduled to travel through the same mountain pass that we were navigating. Steve, Bucky, Gabe and I used a zip chord to get onto the train while it was still in motion; Steve and Bucky left to secure the front train cars while Gabe and I stayed on the roof as their back-up, and that’s…that’s when…”
Her boyfriend rested his elbows on his knees and clasped his hands together as he looked over at her. “That was the mission that Sergeant Barnes didn’t survive, wasn’t it?” She nodded, her eyes still diligently trained on the dark blue material of her trousers, but she could feel his compassionate gaze on her as he continued. “Barnes died a hero to his country. The bastard turned against Schmidt to save his own skin, and Cap and the SSR were able to end Hydra and the war. That’s gotta bring you and the rest of the Howling Commandos some satisfaction, right?”
“It did…” (Y/N) admitted, but she tightly pursed her lips as she recalled the aftermath of the fateful mission to capture Zola alive. “Right up until his interrogation, that is.”
The tunnels below the London headquarters of the Strategic Scientific Reserve echoed with the sound of (Y/N)’s standard-issue heels making contact with the stone floor as she approached one of many interrogation cells; her fingers tightly clutched the classified file in her hands in an effort to contain her swirling emotions but judging by the apprehensive expressions on the stationed MP’s faces whenever she passed by, she was doing a poor job of masking her true feelings.
“As requested, a copy of my mission report to D.C.,” (Y/N) announced as she came to a stop before Colonel Phillips, and she arched a brow at the tray of food he was holding. “Hungry?”
“Zola surrendered and didn’t try to do himself in with cyanide, so I figured that the usual interrogation techniques might not work on this wack-job. He should count himself lucky; I’ve got over a dozen SSR agents chomping at the bit to finally get their hands on a live Hydra operative.”
Just as Colonel Phillips balanced the tray on one hand to reach for the file, (Y/N) tightened her grip on it and blurted out, “Colonel, I need to go in there with you.”
“Agent (Y/L/N), you and the rest of the 107th tactical team have my condolences for Sergeant Barnes’ death, but I can’t allow you any access to-”
“Respectfully, Colonel, you’re the commanding officer of the Strategic Scientific Reserve; you can directly authorize an agent access to as many high-security prisoners as you deem necessary, correct? I’m only requesting access to one.”
“You don’t get to tell me how to do my job, Agent.” The sharp tone in the older man’s voice conflicted with the uncharacteristic compassion emanating from his dark brown gaze. “I’ll authorize you access to the observation room, but that’s it.”
(Y/N)’s jaw clenched as she forced herself to remain composed, but there was nothing she could do to keep her voice from trembling with barely-restrained grief. “Colonel, the man on the other side of that door is the reason my friend and God knows how many Allied soldiers are dead. I…I need to do all I can to ensure that he gives us all the intel we need to take Hydra down. I need to help end this war once and for all.”
In contrast with the strained working relationships he shared with Peggy and Howard, Colonel Chester Phillips seemed to have a soft spot for (Y/N) since the moment she was loaned out to the SSR from the OSS; Peggy often speculated that it was because she reminded him of his granddaughter back home and although she’d never admit it aloud, (Y/N) considered him to be the father-figure she’d always longed for. They got along with one another but more importantly, they shared a mutual respect and it was that respect that seemingly compelled the older man into finally giving her a relenting nod. With a brief command from Colonel Phillips, the MP stationed nearby opened the door and after taking a deep breath, (Y/N) followed the colonel into the interrogation cell.
A dim light from an overhead fixture illuminated the sparsely decorated cell, and the Swiss doctor whirled around to face them both as they sat down at the interrogation table; a surge of pleasure rippled through (Y/N) when she observed his colorless face and the way his hands anxiously fiddled with the sleeves of his prisoner’s uniform, and she maintained eye-contact with him as she crossed one leg over the other and leaned back in her seat. Colonel Phillips set the tray of food down onto the table and spun it around before gesturing towards the unoccupied chair across from them. “Sit down.”
With obvious trepidation, Zola followed his order and sat, his brow arching as he looked down at the steak, potatoes, broccoli and glass of milk laid out before him. “What is this?”
“Steak.”
“What is in it?”
“Cow!” Colonel Phillips looked incredulously between (Y/N) and Zola. “Doctor, do you realize how difficult it is to get ahold of a prime cut like that out here?”
The Swiss doctor shrugged. “I don’t eat meat.”
“Why not?”
Taken aback by (Y/N)’s pointed question, Zola fidgeted in his seat and replied, “It disagrees with me.”
“How about cyanide? Does that give you the rumbly tummy, too?”
While Zola’s brow furrowed in confusion, Colonel Phillips spun the tray back around and used the utensils to begin cutting into the steak as (Y/N) continued. “Every Hydra agent that we’ve tried to take alive has crunched a little pill before we can stop him, but not you.”
The colonel hummed in agreement as he feasted on the tray of food, raising his fork in the air and glancing over at (Y/N) with a look of exaggerated curiosity on his wrinkled face. “Here’s my brilliant theory, Agent (Y/L/N): he wants to live.”
“You’re trying to intimidate me, Colonel.” Zola’s beady eyes flicked between them as a sheen of sweat slowly covered his balding head, obviously growing anxious under the strain of his imprisonment and their unconventional interrogation.
Colonel Phillips scoffed. “We bought you dinner. Why don’t we cut to the chase and show Doctor Zola here what’s in that file?”
While the colonel cut the steamed potatoes into quarters, (Y/N) withdrew a single piece of paper from the file and slid it across the table, her red-lacquered nails drumming on the tabletop as she watched the Swiss doctor read the typed mission report aloud. “‘…and in exchange for his full cooperation, Doctor Zola is being remanded to Switzerland…’”
“I sent that message to Washington this morning. Of course, it was encoded.” (Y/N) leaned forward, resting her elbows on the tabletop, and fixed Zola with an unwavering stare. “You guys haven’t broken those codes, have you? That would be awkward.”
Zola’s expression remained neutral, but the lines between his brows were visibly deeper and she could practically see the wheels turning inside his head while he carefully considered his predicament. “Schmidt will know this is a lie.”
“He’s going to kill you anyway, doc.” Colonel Phillips punctuated his blunt reply with a shrug. “You’re a liability. You know more about Schmidt than anyone and the last guy you cost us was Captain Rogers’ closest friend, so I wouldn’t count on the very best of protection.” The sound of Bucky’s scream as he fell from the train and into the deep chasm below played on a loop in (Y/N)’s mind, forcing her to dig her nails into the skin of her palms to keep from reacting, an action she was no stranger to as a woman serving in a secretive branch of the Allied armed forces but one that she hated having to perform in the wake of her friend’s death. “It’s you or Schmidt; it’s just the hand you’ve been dealt.”
The Swiss doctor, taking note of the colonel’s grim tone and the obvious tension in (Y/N)’s shoulders, huffed out a humorless chuckle before nodding once and stating, “Schmidt believes he walks in the footsteps of the gods. Only the world itself will satisfy him.”
“You do realize that’s nuts, don’t you?”
Shaking his head, Zola huffed out a humorless chuckle at the colonel’s comment. “The sanity of the plan is of no consequence.”
“And why’s that?”
“Because he can do it!”
(Y/N), losing patience with Zola and his feeble attempts at providing them with answers, snapped out, “What’s his target?”
When Zola’s beady eyes focused on hers, a shiver of foreboding traveled up (Y/N)’s spine and it took every ounce of willpower she possessed not to look away as he simply replied, “His target…is everywhere.”
“He told us everything we needed to know; the exact coordinates of Schmidt’s secret base in the Alps, a detailed run-down of Schmidt’s plan to bomb over half a dozen of the world’s largest cities, how much time we had before Hydra’s scheduled attack on New York…and within twenty-four hours, Schmidt was dead and Hydra was finally defeated.” (Y/N)’s fingers were wrapped tightly around her now-empty cup and she was leaning against Jack’s side, taking comfort in her boyfriend’s sturdy form as she spoke in the lowest tone she could and kept a wary eye on Peggy across the waiting room. “But there was something about his eyes, like he knew some big secret that the colonel and I could never understand, and I can’t shake the feeling that there’s something we missed.” Swallowing thickly, she finally looked over at Jack and met his empathetic gaze. “That’s crazy, right?”
Jack shook his head. “Definitely not. Listen, Specs, we might’ve both served on opposite ends of the world, but all the horrible shit we saw and lived through during the war? It hasn’t broken us. We’re still here, and our experiences matter because they’re what shaped us into the people we are today: people who dedicated their lives to making this screwed-up world a better place.” The corner of his lip curved into a small smile as he affectionately bumped the side of her head with his own. “You were the one who taught me that.”
Looking into his clear blue eyes, (Y/N) felt the stiffness in her shoulders begin to melt away and she couldn’t fight the smile that slowly made its way onto her face. “I’m a pretty good teacher, aren’t I?”
“Oh, hands-down, the smartest and most gorgeous teacher I’ve ever had.” Her boyfriend’s flirtatious wink forced (Y/N) to mask her giggle with a cough and flash several of the waiting room’s occupants an apologetic look while he quietly continued. “If you think that Zola’s up to no good, then I believe you. There’s no easy way to handle a situation as delicate as Operation Paperclip; all we can do is our best and in this case, the best that we can do is to keep a close eye on him and every other scumbag Nazi scientist that they’ve recruited. How’s that sound, Specs?”
She took a deep breath and gave him a firm nod. “Like a pretty solid game plan, Flyboy.”
Before either of them could say another word, the double doors leading into the hospital’s operating room swung open and Howard strode into the waiting room, a grin on his face as he made a bee-line over to where Peggy stood. “Michael’s been wheeled into a recovery room and all preliminary signs are pointin’ to a successful operation. Your brother’s gonna be just fine, Peg.”
The younger woman’s anxious expression was overtaken by a look of overwhelming relief and she didn’t hesitate to throw her arms around the inventor in a tight hug. The rest of the waiting room collectively released the grateful breath that they’d been holding for hours and while the SOE officers and SSR officials talked amongst themselves, Jack wrapped an arm around (Y/N)’s shoulders and pressed a chaste kiss onto her temple; she closed her eyes and as she took comfort in her boyfriend’s supportive touch, she spoke a silent word of thanks to the universe for Michael’s successful surgery and for sending her a supportive and understanding partner in the form of Jack Grant Thompson.

Both were asleep in bed, when little 7 year old Tony walked into the bedroom and climbing into their bed.
Jason woke up first rubbing his eyes and sighed, "Bubba what you doing? We built you a new big boy bed last week.."
"Bad dream.." Said little Tony balling up his fist and getting under the covers, "..and Daddy is out."
"Oh right Momma visiting Aunt Peg for the week.."
"I'm sorry..c-can I stay?"
That moment Elizabeth woke up ruffling her nephew's bed head and yawned, "Sure, Bambino. But you wanna talk about the bad dream first?"
Tony looked down holding his teddy bear and mumbled, "I was in a dark and scary cave with a dragon..and I could not fight him, I was running but there no way to go.."
"Aww sweetie, look it's okay not every dream is gonna be a good one but you're okay. Everything is okay, you hear me?"
" I know..it's okay, b-but I was lost and scared..I did not save the princess..I fail.."
"Oh no sweetie, you didn't fail anyone. It was just a bad dream, there are no dragons here to hurt you."
"But the princess?"
"Maybe you will save her in the next dream."
Jason added with a tired smile, "Or maybe the princess already saved herself? Like auntie Lizzie or auntie Peg. And she's now waiting for you in the dream."
"Really?" Tony asked with a small smile.
"Yeah, sometimes it's the little prince that needs to go on journey to find the princess waiting for him in the end."
"Okay, I am ready to sleep now..and meet the princess."
"Out of curiosity, who was the princess?"
"Her name was Molly."
"Ohh nice name."
Elizabeth cut in with a chuckle, "Yeah very nice! Now we can please go to sleep and save the kingdom tonight in this dream?"
The boys nodded with a smile, cuddling up in bed with the lady of the house.
------
Elizabeth blowing raspberries on Tony's tummy as his giggles filled up the house with laughter. Jason was building up rocking chair in the living room and walked into the kitchen.
Jarvis was making lunch for them.
"Hey babe." He said with a smile, kissing her forehead then gave his nephew one on the cheek.
"Hi dear." She replied with a smile bouncing their nephew in her lap who giggled brightly.
It was a running gag but a sweet one calling each other pet names since the day they met. It went beyond, just them calling each other nicknames Jason called Jarvis's wife, Ana, honey and doll all the time as a term of endearment.
Tumblr media
"JJ!" Tony yelled in glee with a toothy grin, as both adults looked their eyes at his silliness.
Something that would carry on once Tony is older is that silly toothy grin of his, no matter what the situation is. Especially his giggles.
Jarvis set the table for them, as Jason rushed over to help him and cutting Elizabeth's food into smaller sizes. Ana joined them soon enough watching all of this in curiosity. However, it confused the British man, once they all sat down to eat.
"Why does Jason need to cut your food, Miss Stark?" Jarvis asked them as he ate.
"Just watch, dear." Ana added, curious knowing she will get an answer.
With Tony's booster seat resting between them. Ana grabs a glass of wine and sits next to her husband. Looking at the kid who are begin to eat but what caught Jarvis's eye was Tony’s other hand gripping Elizabeth’s left hand in a tight grip.
"Aww how adorable." Ana said with a smile eating her chicken.
"It is indeed but what exactly is happening? I might need an explanation." Jarvis questioned with a smile.
"Tony had this new habit where he only can eat if he holds Elizabeth or Maria’s hand. It started a few days ago." Jason explained chuckling as he ate.
"I don't mind it. It keeps him relaxed and allows me to make sure he's doing alright while eating." Elizabeth replied eating with her other hand.
"What happens if you remove your hand?" Ana asked, in love with the way Tony's happily eating.
Elizabeth lets go of Tony's hand and all of them looking at the youngest Stark who started fusing while chewing a piece of meat, one hand starts waving asking for his auntie’s hand.
Elizabeth just let Tony wrap his fingers with her own in the meantime as Ana chuckled and Jarvis snorted with a smile.
"Howard tried it yesterday, removing Tony's hand away from Maria and he just cried. Not pretty." Jason added chuckling.
"It was hilarious!" Elizabeth told them as she snickered, "My brother promised to let him sleep with their room last night, if he stopped. Howard was third wheeling."
------
“Will you please go to sleep now? You're a growing boy, come on please do it Uncle JJ.” Jason sighed and rubbed his own face with his palm.
“No way.” Tony runs “I wan Liz…”
“I give up.” Jason buried his face in the kid’s bed
Jason finally gets up and walks to the living room where his best girl is reading something from her notebook. Watching Tony just dive to her lap startling the woman.
“What the-?” Elizabeth jumped out of reflex “I-shouldn’t you be in bed and counting sheep?”
“I’m not sleepy.” Tony shakes his head.
“Well, I am.” Jason sighed and sat next to Elizabeth looking into her eyes hoping she understood the silent help signal, "No more kids, one is enough.."
Tumblr media
That was when Hank Pym called as Elizabeth put him on the speaker and started talking with him as she tried to put her kid to sleep.
"Lizzie is this a bad time?" Hank asked while on the phone, hearing Tony mumbling in the background and Jason's voice muttering something.
"No, Hankie it's fine. Someone's allergic to sleep just like his father, I'll pay you 500 bucks if you can get him to sleep." Elizabeth replied jokingly.
"I'll see what I can do. Do you remember the equation use for invention you and Howard were making?"
"Actually, yeah I do. The one for that android prototype? Yeah I do."
"Good because I thinking we can use for this new formula I was creating."
Both scientists go to work, talking with the equipment and possible new investments they would make that month to present to the others. Laughing and gushing about their week as well.
Jason was napping when he was accidentally smack on the shoulder due to Elizabeth's excitement how on they can improve the formula for the shrink ray.
"Ow!" He shouted softly, being woken up.
"Oh, sorry JJ. I was just, you know." She replied trying to explain with a chuckle.
"I know let me take this little guy off your hands."
"Alright."
Both expected to find Tony still awake on his auntie's lap but he nodding off as they spoke. They chuckled quietly thanking Hank's believing their science talk tired him out or something.
He picked him up as Tony's head rested on his shoulder, his eyes were trying to stay open as he mumbled, "I'm not tired...no sleepy.."
"Oh yes you are, Bubba. Very sleepy." Jason said with a soft chuckle with sighed, "Say night night."
Elizabeth stood up cupping his little face mumbling sweet nothing into his ears as Tony hummed a soft, "..night night."
"Night, my little star." She replied with a soft smile, deciding to help tuck him in.
They tucked in their little boy, turning on the recording on Maria Stark's gentle singing voice as background noise for Tony.
Moments like that, they both wished Howard and Maria were not busy sometimes but they're more than happy to raise the little guy instead.
----
As much as he is their little boy, he is Howard's son and that being said he was a little rebellious at time. Especially in his early teens and his years as an adult..
"Anthony Edward Stark, where the hell you think your going?" Elizabeth asked with her arms crossed and tapped her foot with a glare.
"Out!" Repiled Tony, who was 12 years old at this point with a classic smirk.
"It's Monday afternoon on a school night!"
"So?"
"So you're not heading out to whatever your heading off to! I don't care what it is, Friday it's another thing, I allow it. But Monday, hell no!"
"You're not dad, auntie Liz!"
"And thank god I ain't. Be lucky it ain't Peggy either, why do you want to head out anyway? To act cool with your friends?"
Tony sighed in defeat dramatically dropping the smirk and crossed his arms, "Well no shit. All my friends are doing it."
Jason stepped in after returning home from an getting supplies hearing his nephew, "Please tell you didn't just curse in front of your aunt."
"I just said 'shit'! Relax.." Tony replied with a sigh thinking of something knowing who's the softer parent, "And aunt Liz won't let me go out."
"First off no cursing at your aunt. And second, out where?"
"An party..all my friends will be there!"
"Is it on Friday?"
"Yup! It's on Friday, it's a small party."
Elizabeth scoffed, "No! It's tonight, an silly little stupid party with his friends doing god knows what. God knows if the parents will be there!"
"She's lying! She doesn't want me to have fun this week and stay stuck in this house, only invite to Rhodey or something." Tony shouted.
"Enough!" Jason yelled raising his voice, "I know she ain't lying and that you're the one who is actually lying. You know the rules Tony, no parties or anything on school night like Monday. And something tells me those kids parents don't know they're going to that party."
"B-but that's not fair! I should be allow to go." Tony yelled.
"No you shouldn't and it is fair, she’s saving you for tomorrow. She knows that something off is going on if it's on a Monday, simple as that. Doesn't that sound a little weird to you?"
"...yeah..it does."
"We will talk about this later."
A few more words were said before Tony left to the living room. Liz was pissed off and so was Jason.
He sighed and told her, "You were doing the right thing."
"I know.." She sighed, "I know. I'm just trying to protect him. Something tells me this won't be the last argument."
"Cause it won't. But we just try to lead him down the right path.."
"You got that right. Protecting him and all that.."
----
Road trips with the three of them tend to be something else. Tony always making himself known with questions, annoying them on purpose and snickering afterwards.

"Where we going?" Tony asked in the backseat, playing with his jacket zipper.
"To meet Peggy and your parents in San Diego." Elizabeth replied like it was obvious with a smile.
"And why are you driving?"
"Because your uncle JJ has a bad history with driving."
Jason perked up, "I'm right here, you know?!
Tony snorted, "Okay what time we get there?"
"Midnight." Elizabeth said with sigh.
"What happens at midnight?"
"You're bedtime."
"Can I drive?"
Both shouted at the same time, "No!"
That resulted in Tony laughing at their response as both parents chuckled at his ridiculous way to make times like that a joke or two.
---
Sometimes Elizabeth tends to become a mama bear, as if she isn't already. Like when Tony started dating, Howard rolled his eyes chuckling at his sister and Maria gushed hoping her boy enjoys the dating scene.
Elizabeth on the other hand, she was so excited and sat beside Jason one afternoon while he was reading. He was reading a classic children's' book from the shelfs, 'The Giving Tree' when Elizabeth came with a grin.
"Yes my darling?" He asked looking up from the book with a laugh.
"Tony got a date!" She repiled with a smile.
"With who? I mean I'm not surprise our kid has been a cheeky little guy since the age of 3."
"You know that day Howard took Tony down to that event in Chicago? Well there was this nice girl there with her mother, Tony sneaked off to see her and now they met again due to her mother bringing her here for an clothing event. And according to Ana, he has a date."
"That's my boy. If he's not a gentleman, I'll ground him for life. Where to?"
"Ana said that caravel downtown this weekend. She was eavesdropping and I love her for it."
"Not bad for a first actually date with a girl he seems to like."
Elizabeth sigh assuming something, Jason knew that look on her face and ask her what's going on.
"I don't want to sound cheesy but he's growing up so fast, JJ! I mean where did the time go? It felt like I was helping him add 2 + 2 yesterday! Now a date? Damn..he's my baby." Elizabeth admitted with a sigh.
Jason opened his arms pulling her into an tight embrace as she was nuzzling comfortably against his neck. She pouted, it was a rare moment but she did. He chuckled rubbing her shoulder.
Tumblr media
"Aw, Lizzie, darling. He's growing up, I don't like it. Hell I would rather stop time and let him stay the way he is now. But we can't. Before we know it, he's buying his own house or deciding to buy this one off his father." Jason joked with a smile.
Elizabeth chuckled, "He might as well do that. I'm not ready for him to keep growing up, what if he doesn't want hugs from his auntie anymore? What if he grows up hating the idea of living with us? I mean it's a packed a house, i don’t blame him."
"Hahaha no, honey he won't. I think he rather have a packed house than a quieter one. And he will always need his auntie, he's your baby. Tony knows it, hell he might make you an godmother one day."
"Oh god no, don't think that far hahaha! I want him live in the moment now, before he's old and gray. I'm still gonna baby him no matter how old he is! You know that right?"
"Oh I know. And he's gonna be annoyed but love you for it. No matter what you do, you will be there to protect him and stand up for him."
"You too!"
"Oh hell yeah I will!"
---
And they are right about that. Yeah sure, Lizzie was gone under the ice for years due to a freak accident thinking she was goner. Having Jason and Tony feeling down in the dumps for some time.
But when that girl returned, her mama bird side came with her. And the man who was her right hand was more than happy about that.
"He's insane!" Liz yelled with a sigh, pointing at her nephew, "You're insane."
"Hello?! Have you met me?" Tony replied with a chuckle, "I think Pepper would love a big bunny for an anniversary slash Christmas present."
"Okay I dealt the whole 'I'm Iron Man, I can do whatever the hell I want' thing. But your Tony Stark! My Tony Stark, use that head of yours is a big bunny a good idea?"
"JJ gets you big jewelry and spoils you! I blame him for my actions, the bunny stays."
"Oh jeez. Did you at least get dinner ready?"
"Yeah it's pizza tonight. Why are you acting so uptight lately?"
Elizabeth sighed, "I've been asleep for years in ice and I come back to find you as Iron Man. A superhero. I know it's been an year now, but a part of me is still scared your gonna blow it!"
Tony chuckled pulling his auntie into a hug, "Oh Liz, it's me we're talking about. Hell, JJ is still terrified for my life. And honestly, I've already it blew it last year, in New York. I am stressed but I will be fine.."
"I know about your late night snacking and sleepless night, Tony. I'm worried about you. We all are."
"I know you are..but if anything happens, I will tell you. I promise."
~~~
Last forward to Christmas time, once the house blew up and JARVIS announces Tony's anxiety problems to everyone after arriving at the snowy side of the U.S. before shutting off.
Tumblr media
Soon enough, they're dragging themselves across the snow to find a safe house. Rei's suit is being dragged across the snow, as he decide to start helping his godfather.
Liz snaps, "Anything you want to tell me?!"
"Okay in my defense I was gonna tell you soon." Tony winced.
"When?!"
"I was gonna make you an omelette and tell you about it!"
"Oh my god!"
Jason sighed dragging the Iron Man suit with them across with snow as the night fall onto of them.
"You two knew about this?! This whole time and didn't think of telling me?!" Jason yelled.
"I thought you knew about this! Or that he told you!" Liz yelled back.
"Great, now Ma and Pops are fighting." Rei added sarcastically, "Good job, Dad!"
Tony turned look at his son, “I’m sorry, how is this my fault?”
“Isn’t everything?”
“This is unbelievable.”
----
Other times, Jason and Elizabeth would be protecting themselves or their kids presence even when the guy isn't nearby.
Such as 2014, when they were called by SHIELD when it came to Alexander Pierce wanting their signature onto the new helicarriers.
Jason was tired as he asked, "Okay Pierce, what the hell is this?"
Elizabeth was standing next to him and pressed, "Mr. Secertary, what he meant is there a reason you've asked us to come here?"
"Signature, Mr. Underwood and Miss Stark." Said Pierce holding out pens, "As well, I was hoping you ask your nephew to stop by my niece's birthday party as a favor for Nick."
"He's our nephew, not a party entertainer." Elizabeth said with a raise eyebrow.
"Unless it's for his own children, and at the moment he's not dealing with your favors." Jason added, "What's the favor you're doing for Nick?"
"That's classified information, sir." Pierce replied.
"Of course it is..you know, it was a pretty long day and I don't want to be here. Matter a fact, none of us want to be to here! So good night Alexander." Elizabeth said standing up from her chair.
Jason stood up following her, opening the door for the girl as he gave Pierce an odd look before walking out. However that didn’t stop Elizabeth Stark to get information later on that day, returning to Alexander Pierce’s office after cooling down to get any information needed.
——
Sometimes due to Jason and Elizabeth being so close to Tony, along with their godchildren they get mistaken for the actual parents. Hell, even for being a couple more than once.
Such as in the early to late 2010s, Justin Hammer once asked, “Are theses your parents, Stark? I thought they were dead..”
Tony would give an sarcastic smile and reply, “Aw Hammer, you’re jealous? Too bad not everyone was given 3 sets of parents.”
“Three?”
“Oh yeah, didn’t you hear? Or were you too busy washing yourself in that horrible 80s cologne?”
Justin scoffed, “Damn. But seriously, are they giving out set of parents for free or what?”
“No. They’re mine, you can’t have them.” Tony added with a smirk.
Tumblr media
Or when Fury called Tony and The Avengers out a few times, he will tend to bring JJ and Liz names into conversation, using the term parents. Such as in 2015, when they are all in Clint’s Barn. Also known as The Safe House.
Everyone was in the kitchen, including the teens and kids. Some were at the table such as Natasha, Bruce, Rick, Ava, Rei and Rochelle. Others were surrounding the area near the sink and fridge across from the kitchen island, such as Tony, Clint and Steve with Liane and Luna.
Clint’s wife Laura was listening in as the younger kids were wondering around.
Elizabeth was drying dishes as Jason washed them, meanwhile Fury was finishing placing some orange slices on a plate.
Nat spoke up, “You know boss, when I was hoping I saw ya, you would have more than that.”
Fury replied, “I do. I have you. Back in the day, I had eyes everything, ears everywhere else. You kids have all the things you can dream to use, Stark’s parents didn’t have much to work with beforehand but they made do. Now here we are, back on earth with nothing but our wit and our willingness to do good.”
Jason added, “Just like old times, huh? Rehashing a plan during dinner, then collaborating in the morning to figure out what can be done..”
“Ain’t that the truth. Nothing but our strength to save the world and make a difference for others.” Elizabeth commented with a grin.
Fury gave them a half smile and continued his speech, “Ultron says The Avengers are the only thing between him and his mission. And weather or not he admits it, his mission is global destruction. All this lay in the grave. So stand, out with the platinum bastard.”
Natasha winked at Rick and Rochelle before saying with a smirk, “Steve doesn’t like that kinda talk.”
Steve gave her a humorous mock glare, “You know what, Romanoff?”
The teens and young adults in the room snorted and chuckled. The group kept talking, figuring out what will they all do next, with the young members of the team chiming into the conversations.
Even Jason mentioned, “You can try Pentagon's firewall, are they open this time?”
“That could work, they are still roughly open this time and hour.” Elizabeth comments.
“Should i know why you know that?”
“I had to message the Pentagon years ago to reach an barrier of systemic risks, for SHIELD’s locating tactics. And Tony did something he wasn’t supposed to..”
“Oh god, what was it this time?”
Fury ate his orange slice answering, “You’re boy cracked into SHIELD systemic burns, but beforehand he cracked their firewall.”
“That’s something, I do think I remember he did!” He replied chuckling, “We got mysterious calls afterwards for weeks.”
Tony chimed in with a grin sounding proud and said, “I cracked the Pentagon’s firewall in high school on a dare and got a sweet deal afterwards.”
Elizabeth grinned brightly, “That’s my boy! Definitely a win in my books.”
“And me? I cracked into SHIELD firewall too multiple times.” Rei added with a sly smile, as you could hear his godfather holding back his laughter in the background.
“I love you too, kiddo!” She replied to her sarcastic godson, “Both of you are the reasons for the facility's cyber-security sub-bar.”
Time In A Bottle(young!Howard Stark X reader)
Paring: young!Howard X Carter!Reader
Summary: after a time machine going wrong a few faces from the past get knocked into our century.
A/N: this is an old story of mine that I posted on Wattpad a while back. It's not edited but I hope you all enjoy.
Tumblr media
"can't believe how long it's been since you've been in the ice" I mumbled looking through a magazine that was just published. It was full of articles and pictures of Steve, my aunt peggie, and Howard Stark. I kept flipping through when I stopped on a picture of my aunt.
"you know you kinda look like her" Steve said standing behind the stool I was sitting on and looked over my shoulder looking at the picture of Peggy. I smiled and nodded. I was proud to be a Carter and I didn't hide it like my sister Sharon did. Before I could say anything else there was a loud crash coming for the lab. "what the hell was that?" I asked Tony who was sitting on the couch with pepper.
"you didn't leave anything on did you?" pepper asked. "it's probably just Bruce" Tony mumbled and got up.
"no because Bruce and natasha went on vacation... Remember?" tony stopped in his tracks and looked guilty. He knew exactly what he did he just wasn't ready to admit to what he did. "I'll be back" he said running towards the lab.
"miss. Carter, Mr stark has requested your assistance in the lab" I hear Friday call out from the speakers of the lab. I sighed and threw the magazine onto the coffee table and walked towards the lab. "Tony way do I always have to save your ass" I asked walking into the lab.
When I looked up I saw a treo of people serounding the time machine we've been working on for months. "who's your friends?" I asked crossing my arms. Tony tried to talk but I ignored him looking at three people. One that I recognized made my heart skip a beat.
"aunt Peggy?" I mumbled. She didn't hear me which I was thankful for. No need to add more to the confusion.
"how did you guys get here?" I asked my question was competly ignored and my aunt Peggy started to attack a man who looked like Tony. "Howard you buffoon I told you to not mess with that damed robot again"
"time machine!" Howard correct. "it's a time machine and it obviously worked so I'm a genius" he said with a smirk and crossed his arms over his chest with pride. Now we know where tony gets his ego. "what year is it miss?" the third one asked. He sounded like Jarvis just more human.
"2022" I said crossing my arms. As the three conversed with Tony and I couldn't help but feel a pair of eyes on me I looked over and noticed Howard staring at me. Howard was pretty handsome in his younger years. He looked at lot like Tony but maybe a bit taller. They both seemed to have the same attitude and the same eyes and hair.
I looked at him and raised an eyebrow questioning him. He simply winked and tried to get his two since in the conversation. After a few minutes of arguing we finally came to agreement.
"okay so they'll stay here In till we can figure out how to send them back home" I said walking to the time machine. It looked burnt to the crisp and refused to turn one. I sighed as I picked up a piece that fell off and sat on top of the waist of space.
"(y/n) why don't you show our guests around and show them where the extra rooms are" Tony said before I could escorts them to their destinations Peggy chimed in. "that won't be necessary" she said to me. "I think I can find my way around" she left the lab and literally walked the opposite direction of where she was supposed to go. I crossed my arms and rolled my eyes at the woman I shared blood with. "she's going the wrong way isn't she?" Howard asked clearly reading my expressions right.
"yup" I said turning to him. He flashed me a smirk and looked me up and down. "if the offer of a tour of our new living facilities are still open I would love if you'd show me around" I rolled my eyes at him. He was definitely cocky and very brave you could also tell him and Tony are related. I scoffed "fine" I then started to walk down the hallway as Howard tried to catch up with me.
-----------(1st pov)-----------
I tossed and turned in my bed. Once comfy bed felt like a brick and the room felt like a hundred degrees. Millions of things ran through my head. From the simplest things to more hectic things. My first thoughts were on my aunt and how hard it felt to tell her I was her blood or the fact me and Tony couldn't figure out how to send her back to the right time period.
It also felt wired that I couldn't get Howard out of my head. The man was indeed a charming man much like his son. He also held the same ego and sarcasm but he seemed to know when to hide it unlike Tony.
The man wouldn't leave me alone the rest of the day. He would follow me around the compound like a lost puppy or try to 'help' me in the lab. On the contrary I don't need help in my lab and I felt that he needed to know I don't need a man to help me get my job done. That's why I own my own lab because dispit Tony being my best friend it was always hard to do a job with out him breathing down my neck.
I sighed giving up on sleep and left my room. I quietly walked down the hallway trying not to wake anyone and headed into the kitchen for some tea and maybe a snack. I sighed rumgimg through the cabinets in the dim almost dark room.
"can't sleep either?" I voice said making me jump. I quickly turned around and saw Howard setting at the counter in the middle of the kitchen. He looked just as tired as I felt. His brown hair slightly wet from a shower but in some strainds of hair were fluffy and Stubele peppered his jaw. He was wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans that Tony possibly gave him. Above all he was handsome I wasn't denying that but in the end I would have to stop myself from getting close to him. For his, mine, and especially Tony's sake.
"no I can't sleep too much on my mind" I sighed setting a crossed from him. He simply smirked and shook his head. "this hole thing is a mystery to me too. I think this is an amazing experience but then I want to get Peggy and Jarvis home where they belong"
"if ony Bruce was home, he's just as smart as you and Tony"
"your pretty intelligent yourself doll" he responded. His brown eyes looked at me and he smirked making me blush.
"me and Tony will try to get you home" I said. "I mean no rush... This time period can't be that bad could it?" he asked.
I titled my head to the side and my straight face broke to a smile. "are you kidding? I would love to live in the 40s"
"why?" he asked with a chuckle. "I Love the history, the music, the cars are my favorite" I smiled.
"you like cars?" he smirked like he was surprised. I slightly nodded and He looked amused.
"what was Steve like back then? I mean before the serum?" I asked breaking the silence.
"much like he is now I'm guessing. I didn't really know him much before he took the serum" he said drinking the last of his coffee. As we fell into comfortable silence I started to feel my eyes get heavy. I rested my elbow on the tabe and my head was supported by my  fist. "you look tired.. You should go back to bed..we gotta lot of work to do tomorrow" Howard smiled at me. I only nodded and stood up from the counter. I smiled and padded his shoulder. "get some sleep too Stark" he only nodded.
"good night doll" he called out as I left the room.
------------
The next morning I woke up before anyone else. It was pretty quiet which in my opinion was good. That ment Tony was getting the right amount of sleep he deserves and hopefully the rest of the team was doing the same.
I really didn't feel like working on the time machine before Tony and Howard got up so I just went down to the grauge where all the cars we owned sat. All of them were different in size in color. To Scott's rust bucket of a van to clint and Steve's motorcycles. I like to think my baby out shined them all. My car is back 1967 chivy impala. I worked hard to keep in shape and always made sure I ran to perfection.
I smiled at the black automobile and turned on my CD player. The silver machine flashed one and played Elvis Presley on a low volume. Tony and Clint always called me old school. I didn't use Bluetooth speakers to listen to music and I never saw the reason to by modern cars. I hated New music and new anything. I'm a old soul as steve would say. I loved old movies like Alfred Hitchcock movies or Friday the 13th. I refused to listen to any new music which annoyed Wanda and Peter in some ways.
I digged out the tools I needed and started tinkering under the hood. Things were going through smoothly in till I felt one bolt that wouldn't loosen. I grunted getting aritated and started to pull harder while cussing under my breath.
I then herd the door open and close. I ignored it and continued to work. So after the noises disappeared I felt someone come up behind me. The figure the bigger than mine and I felt his arms reach and grabbed the rinch I had. When I felt his chest against my back I quickly elbowed him. "hay doll I'm only trying to help" it was howard. I rolled my eyes and moved away from the car. "thanks but I got it" I said crossing my arms.
As I turned back around and finished my work on the engine. As I had my back to him I heard him snort and let out a sigh. I quickly wiped around and crossed my arms and Clinched the wrinch I had. "what?"
"nothing" he smiled and moved closer. I stepped back and leaned on my car. "your different from anyone I've ever met"
"oh?" I said not really amused but wanting to know what he meant. "you don't fall at my feet and you stand your ground" he explained. "your kind to me with out trying to be a flert and I really admire how smart you are"
"well... Thanks I think" I slightly blushed and turned back around before he could see. When I leaned over into the car under the hood I saw him move over to the side of the car in the corner of my eye. I sighed as he watched me closely as I worked.
When I went back to the bolt I was struggling with I pushed down as hard as I could and got it lose. But when I did I smashed my had making me hiss and pull back. I grumbled and shook my hand to hit rid of the pain. I squeezed my eyes shut not seeing Howard come up and grabbed my jammed hand in his hand. I opened my eyes and saw him looking down at my hand and rubbing where it hurt. "what are you doing?" I asked stepping back slowly.
"it's bruised let me see" he said taking my hand back and examining my thumb and palm. "im fine really" his chocolate eyes looked up at me making my heart race. My cheeks faded into a pink color and this time he saw it.
"I'm making you nervous, aren't I doll?" he asked kissing my knuckles then Releasing my hand. "n-no you don't" I said trying to stand my ground. I quickly turned around to my car and shut the hood. As soon as the hood shut with a thud I felt him behind me.
"so now your being shy around me?" he asked and kissed my cheek then my jaw. "what happened to your little attitude?" I sighed and turned around facing him. One of his hands fell to my hip and his other went under my chin lifting it up so we made eye contact. "we should see if Tony's up" I whispered.
He leaned in closer brushing his nose to mine. "he's not up yet" his brown eyes stared into my soul as his free hand moved to the back of my neck and pulled me closer. "can I kiss you?"
His question surprised me. I wanted to say yes but when I stared into his brown eyes all I saw was tony. What would he think or react to his best friend kissing a young version of his father. He would always tell me how much he hated Howard and I was always Tony's shoulder to cry on and was always there to listen when he needed to rant about his father.
"I can't" I whispered as I placed my hands on his chest as a single tear left the corner of my eye. "we- I cant do this to tony" he looked at me with hurt and confusion glossing over his eyes. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to over step-" he started but I cut him off.
"I'm sorry... It's not you" I shook my head and left his arms. "I should get to work Tony's probably waiting" I said leaving him alone in the garage.
-----------
"sorry about intrupting your vacation Bruce" I said crossing my arms and looking at him through the screen. "we wouldn't have called you unless it wasn't important" I said.
"don't worry about, sorry I cant be there to help" he responds. "no, you and natasha deserve to get away"
"wait I've got a quick question" Scott said behind me. "what?" me and Bruce said at the same time.
"so if Howard doesn't get back to his normal time period doesn't that mess up Tony's chance of being born?"
"no not necessarily" I said hoping up on my desk and flipping through my notebook of notes we've taken the last month.
"most likely when Howard and Peggy went into the future they made a different time line" Tony chimed in.
"wait, what do you mean?" Peggy asked crossing her arms. I looked over to my aunt and Howard. Howard avoided looking at me which made me upset but that was the least of my problems.
"okay like 5 or so years ago a member of the X-men had to trave into the future to fix something. Now when he did he made two different time lines. The one he was originally from the a different one...kinda like an alternate reality" I explained. "now if Tony's right you being here won't affect the past."
"so ignore everything you learned from back to the future Scott" Bruce committed through my computer.
"what if we don't want to go back?" Howard spoke up. Peggy whipped her head around and glared at him. "and take the chance of messing up the future? Messing up the chance of your son being born?" he said kinda shouting at him.
"aunt Peggy" I started she turned around and looked at me without any of the aggretion she gave Howard. "if you trave to the past or the future, that becomes your future/past and the your  future becomes the present. Which now can't be changed by your new future"
"so we could stay here if we wanted?" she asked looking at Steve. He was in the back of the lab trying to stay out of the way. "it's a risk to take, but most likely yes" Tony responded.
"we need to look more into it before you guys make any decisions" I said looking at Peggy then Howard. He immediately looked down and started to fiddle with button on the sleeve of his gray dress shirt.
------------
Another week passed and we got a little bit closer at cracking the codes. Last week we were lucky enough to get Shuri to trave from Wakanda and help us. Me and her worked into the night so Tony and Howard could get sleep and then we got sleep in the early mornings.
"almost done with the coding on this" shuri said taping on one of the hologram screens in the lab. "I'm putting in the last of the wiring now" I respond twisting the red and blue wire together then closing the lid to cover it. Before I could continue with anything else the alarm went off signaling there was a mission.
I sighed and ran off after apologizing to shuri for ditching her. "what do we got?" I asked running into the jet were everyone else was. "just a standard Hydra base, nothing we aren't already use to" steve said.
The mission was longer than we intesapated and a lot of us got engerd especially me but I didn't really care. When we got home I tried to go to bed but Tony and Steve dragged me to the lab were Howard was working with Shuri. "what happened?" he asked as steve picked me up and sat me on Tony's desk. "I'm fine" I mumbled.
"Howard check her enjeries will ya" Steve said walking out of the lab. "I'm fine really" I said as Howard rolled up my sleeve to check the cut on my arm.
"so what happened?" he asked cleaning the cut that was on my forehead. "it was just harder than we expected... More weapons and better sacurity than we thought" I replied and tried to leave but he pushed me back down. "come on Stark"
"you know it's not a bad thing to get help some times" he said kinda irritated. I sighed and let him help. "thanks" I mumbled.
"your welcome" he simply replied and wrapped up my forearm with a bandeges. "I'm only trying to help ya know" he said breaking the silence.
"I know" I mumbled looking down not wanting to face him. He didn't seem to like that so he gently lifted my chin with his fingers. I looked into his brown eyes and felt the familiar feeling. My heart pounded as he leaned in closer than pressed his lips to mine softly. I surprisingly didn't push him away I let it happen. I felt his hands move to both sides of my jaw and pulled me close as he depend the kiss. "Howie.." I said.
He only hummed. "I like that" he said against my lips smirking. He tilted his head to the side for another but placed my hands on his chest stopping him.
"okay I'm sorry" he whispered.
"I'm not, but I can't get attached" I said. "why?" he asked looking scared of rejection. "because we live in two different worlds and time periods.. We have to get you back home" I said tearing up. I moved away and left him but he quickly grabbed my hand before I could get to far.
"you can honestly tell me you feel nothing for me" he spoke.
"yes... I have feelings for you Howard" I said with a whimper.
"then-then what's wrong? Why can't we be together?" he said stepping up closer. "you really want to know why?" I spoke getting frustrated.
"yes! I want to know why" he said shouting. "because I don't trust myself with you" I whispered. I wanted to hug him, kiss him, but I couldn't. The idea of being with someone always seemed to be slim or negative for me. I did care about him but I was scared.
------------
"have you seen my father?" Tony asked coming into the kitchen where I was reading.  "how should I know? I'm not his babysitter" I said not looking up from my book.
"well I just noticed how he started following you around like a lost puppy" he said setting down in front of me. I looked up from my book and locked eyes with genius. "what are you implying?"
He tilted his head to the side like he didn't know what I was talking about. He gave me the soft puppy eyes he always gave me when he knew something was wrong. "okay forget my father, are you okay?"
I shook my head and felt the clinch in my chest as I tried to hold back the tears. "me and Howard kiss" I sob and covered my face afraid of his reaction.
"did he kiss you?"
"yes" I responded
"did you kiss back?"
"I'm sorry Tony, I tried to not get close bu-"
"I'm not mad" he said cutting me off. I raised my droppie head and gave him and questioning look. "why aren't you mad? You always told me how much you hated your father, now I'm starting to fall for him"
"it's okay" he whispered then wrapped his arms around me. "he just better not hurt you"
"it doesn't matter" I spoke pulling away from his arms. "once we get the time machine to work he's going back home.. It would have never worked between us"
"I'm sorry (n/n)" he wrapped his arms around me again and rested my head on his shoulder. "we'll figure this out okay?"
"okay" I mumbled.
----------(Howard's pov)----------
"okay let's start it up" Tony shouts. The machine that's supposed to take us home fired up. I stood there not really wanting to leave and I could tell Peggy didn't want to leave either.
I watched the time machine glow and slightly shake signaling us it was time to leave. I sighed feeling bad that I didn't tell (y/n) goodbye. She was probably the first woman a genuinely loved and was more than a fling or lust. She was smart and sarcastic and didn't fall to my feet when first met her. She made me work for her affection and attention which I actually liked and I worked hard for it.
The times she pushed me away only told me she cared more about other people's happiness than her own. She had a heart of gold and I admired that. She pushed me away because she was afraid of hurting Tony.
"wait" Peggy's voice said grabbing my arm. I looked at her kinda sad and stood in my place. "do you love her?"
I tilted my head to the side trying to play dumb. "don't you look at me like that, you know what I'm thinking about" she said.
I dropped my head and sighed. "I do" i shook my head and started fiddling with the insides of the pockets of my jeans. "than go to her" she said crossing her arms. "stay here and be happy"
"what if effects something? What if I screw up the time line?" I asked pacing back and forth.
"you won't" Tony butted in. "I've talked to Bruce and Strange, and they both said you can't mess it up" I looked down not wanting to look at the man that would be my son in the future. "look she loves you so just stay with her" he said with a sigh. He had the look of someone being forced to say something they didn't.
"I don'-" I started. "go!" Jarvis and Peggy both said at the same time cutting me off.
I nodded and ran out of the room than down the hallway looking for her. I frantically looked around and found a lot of dead ends before I found her in one of the labs. "hay" I said casually.
She quickly looked at me with big dough eyes. "aren't you supposed to be back in the 40's now?"
"I've come to a conclusion" I said walking up to her. "and what is that?" she said crossing her arms. "I'm staying here"
She stared at me with shock painted all over her face. "why would you? What dose this time period have to offer really?"
"you" I said truthfully and stepped up closer maybe only leaving five inches between us. "I want to stay here with you"
I placed my hand on her cheek and slowly leaned in connecting my lips to hers. I felt her arms slowly wrap around my neck and deepen the kiss.
"I love you" I whispered against her lips.
She slowly pulled away and smirked. "I know" I playfully rolled my eyes knowing she was joking. I kissed her forehead and smiled. "your gonna have to teach me about modern time though"
"oh that should be tons of fun" she chuckled than wrapped her small arms around my waist.
"is Peggy staying too?" her small voice spoke making me sighed. She's going back for me, for us. She was on of my closest friends and she's giving up the opportunity to be with steve just so I could be with (y/n). She told me of one of us stays someone needs to be on the 40's keeping it safe. She also told me to keep her safe because (y/n) was her niece. Even though the the two just met you could tell how much Peggy loved her. "she's going back so I could stay with you"
"she also told me to take care of you and if I break your heart she'll come back and kick my ass" I said trying to make her smile. She sadly smiled and looked up at me with her (e/c) eyes.
Everything happens for a reason. I was supposed to screw up with the time machine so it would take us into the future. I like to think I was supposed to find (y/n) and maybe I was supposed to make myself a better father to tony. What ever it supposed to be its definitely a second chance and I'm grateful for that.
I have a little brain worm I have from time to time about a Howard stark x Bucky Barnes fic idea where basically, they met before the war, the fall in love during the wall, Bucky falls, Howard becomes obsessed with finding Bucky and Steve and recreating the super soldier serum. He succeeds in recreating a serum but his experiment goes slightly wrong and he ends up becoming a super soldier. Then they find Bucky, he helps him through recovery, Tony is born yada yada yada you don’t care.
The main point of this post is that in that AU the Mamma Mia movies totally exist and Howard plays Skye bc there’s is no way in hell that you can convince me that the Agent Carter version of Howard stark who owns his own film studio wouldn’t JUMP at the chance to act in a movie filmed in Greece where the ENTIRE cast was drunk the whole time lmao.
The plan wasn't exactly what she had expected. Letting Steve walk willingly into their grasp definitely wasn't something she thought highly of. It was an irrational plan but she was putting more trust in him than she probably should but they needed to finish this. The Commandos had talked her out of trying to physically go with Rogers in the first place. She had shown up ready to get on the back of his motorcycle and ride headfirst in the line of fire but it took all of the Commandos, Dugan specifically, to talk her out of it. Instead the nurse made sure she would be ready to join the guys to save that punk from Brooklyn from Hydra's grasp.
She readied her handlebar for the zipline, she wouldn't be missing her mark this time. No, as soon as she got the nod that her anchor was set she had jumped and was making her way down the line Jaques followed not far behind on one side. Grace kicked her legs out as she neared the window reading to break through. Her boots hit and the momentum shattered the glass, her hands released going straight for the shot gun wrapped around her torso, aiming and firing at the first person that she seen that wasn't on her side. Her eyes hardened and despite the ring in her ears from the multiple gunshots around her she kept locked on. She moved to the shield which had been taken when Rogers was captured.
"'Ey, kid! You might need this," The nurse called before she threw the shield to the super soldier who turned to face her, sparks from a stray bullet spraying behind him.
He shouted a thanks before following after Schmidt. The nurse followed the fellow commandos through the halls, humming the hymnal she got her moniker from. After all the hymn brought her a munch needed distraction from the bodies that vanish when hit by the energy from the Hydra guns.
“Ya know hearing ya humming right now is quite unnerving right now Gracie.” Jaques comments as he covers for Dugan who switches his gun out for one of the Hydra ones.
“Yeah well seeing people evaporate before my eyes is unnerving too but we all are witnessing it.” Gracie sighed.
【☆】★【☆】★【☆】★【☆】★【☆】
The battle continued and for Gracie a gun fight turned into a physical fight that she wasn’t prepared for with one of the Hydra soldiers in all black tactical suits. Gracie swung the butt of the gun at the guy in the same way that Bucky taught her. The Hydra soldier blocked the hit and a deep chuckle startled her out of her focus.
“Ah, du kennst den Soldaten. Schade, was passiert ist. Aber er wird sich erholen.” Ah you know the soldier. A shame what happened. But he will recover.
Her head snapped to attention. Recover? Her chest tightened under the tags that belonged to someone else. Distance. She needed distance. Pulling a leg up between them she kicked him away and into the path of Phillips driving Schmidt’s car.
After hitting the agent Phillips looks to the nurse, “Get in.”
The nurse jumps into the car and Phillips picks up Peggy and follows Rogers who is sprinting after a plane. The car screeched to a halt and Peggy got into the back of the car as the nurse climbed out.
“What are you waiting for punk? Get in!” Grace snaps.
Before Steve was even sitting Phillips sped off to catch up with the plane. The nurse watched the car race after the plane. Her eyes slowly lowered to the pavement. The agent’s words replaying in her head. Did she mess up the translation? Was he talking about a different soldier? Bucky fell. Someone couldn’t live a fall like that. But maybe…
“Lieutenant, look alive!” Phillips’ command snapped her out of her thoughts drawing her attention up to the returning car and a stunned looking Peggy.
【☆】★【☆】★【☆】★【☆】★【☆】
Phillips, Peggy, and the nurse joined Morita in the communication tower of the hanger. They were waiting for some kind of sign from Rogers, or worse, news of what Schmidt gets away with. There are still a few fights going on below them but there was already a clear winner there. The nurse pulled out her med kit and moved out to the hall to patch up injured and keep herself busy but that didn’t keep her from hearing the transmission come in. Rogers had defeated Schmidt. Steve needed to force the plane down before New York, without enough time to contact Howard for help.
“Grace, you might want to get in here. Some thing tells me Agent Carter is going to need you.” Jim hints, his melancholy tone showing that he knew what was about to happen just as much as everyone else that can here the radio.
“Peggy, this is my choice.”
The nurse enters the communication room. Her eyes land the dark waves of her best friend’s hair. She crosses the room her boot steps seemed louder than they should be, or was that her heartbeat in her ears? Grace reached a supportive hand out, resting it on Peggy’s shoulder. Peg, turned her head just slightly.
“Peggy?” Steve sounded dejected.
Peggy turned her attention back to the open line. “I’m here.”
“I’m going to need a rain check on that dance.” Grace closed her eyes as the slightest tug of a smile pulled at the corner of her lips as she listened to Rogers.
Peggy reached a hand up to rest over her friend’s her body tensing for a moment as she resisted the tears that wanted to fall, a few escaping her dark eyes. “Alright. A week, next Saturday, at the Stork Club.”
“You got it.”
Peggy wiped at the fallen tear. “Eight o’clock on the dot. Don’t you dare be late. Understood?” Peggy’s hand closed over Grace’s.
“You know, I still don’t know how to dance.”
The fond smile on Peggy’s face was short lived, her voice nearly cracking, “I’ll show you how. Just be there.”
“We’ll have the band play something slow. I’d hate to step on your—” Steve’s voice cut out and all that could be heard in the tower was the radio static.
Peg pulled away from her friend, “Steve?” She struggled with her emotions her voice cracking as she called once again for Steve but she received no reply. Hopeless sobs joined the static and the tower was empty besides the two women. Peggy leaned over the control panel infront of her, shoulders shaking as she silently cried over the man she wouldn’t get the chance of being with. Grace rubbed her back softly, her mouth opened and she did the one thing she could think of to soothe her friend and she began to sing.
“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound.”
【☆】★【☆】★【☆】★【☆】★【☆】
Returning to New York was something bittersweet. The world was celebrating the end of the war. Yet the Commandos toasted to their fallen captain. Howard lead the search for the plane crash, his fiance alone in their apartment. Before her a diary with her scrawled writing. A soldier wouldn’t have survived the fall from the train. Maybe.. maybe a super soldier would. Could James had survived the fall?
Howard returned, nothing but the tesseract was found. He entered the apartment, the stack of unclaimed mail in his hand. His eyes widened as he caught sight of the woman staring at a large board of calculations and a single photo of Sergeant James Barnes. Her fingers clasped and tapping on the thin metal army issued ID tag that belonged to the same pictures soldier on the board.
The second thing that Howard noticed was the lack of ring on her hand or hanging from the chain around her neck. He would find it in a few minutes on the counter in the kitchen back in the box it came in a scribbles apology not under the box.
It’s been a whole year since the war and despite all the plans they made.. Peggy hasn't so much as heard from Howard outside of the usual scandalous news stories. She was starting to believe he had completely forgotten she existed, that is until… Howard comes walking into SSR, trailed by Rose "ah agent Carter! just the woman I was looking for!" he says, walking right towards her desk.
The others stand up, hands on their guns, staring at him with a look of shock and confusion, as he just strides right into their office.
Carter looks up, "Howard?"
"Good to see you Peg, got any snacks?” he asks, looking through her desk. “I just flew in from London and I'm starved." --------- or after a year of not speaking Howard stark shows up at the SSR asking for Peggy's help finding some of his stolen gadgets, and rekindles their relationship despite the loss of the others in it. (AKA Howard goes to the SSR for help before he's accused of being a terrorist)
~~~~~~~~
1953
The lab room suddenly became chaotic. Alarms started to sound off on the heart monitor connected to the Vita-Ray Chamber and red warning lights flashing. Your face began visibly wincing from pain in the window of the encasement you were locked into.
The serum made your blood pressure spike, edging you close to what could be a heart attack.
“Howard! Cut the infusion! Her heart rate is dangerously high!” Peggy called out over the commotion of white lab coats running around.
Howard Stark began to rush over to the main controls to shut down the serum transmission when he suddenly heard your voice through the container.
“NO! Keep going!” You pushed. You’ve worked too hard to stop now.
Peggy and Howard exchanged concerned glances.
“Stark, she’s only at 70% completion. If she’s already struggling now imagine what will happen to her at 100%.” Peggy cautioned.
Howard looked at the serum percentage meter indicating how much of the I.V. was imported into your blood stream. The meter continued to rise… 75%...80%...85%...
He glanced at your face in the viewing window of the chamber. Your eyes shut tight; jaw clenched doing your best to not black out.
…89%...90%...
“Stark??” Peggy yelled.
Your heart can take no more. Your heart rate reaches its limit causing you to go limp inside the box.
“Shut it down!!” Howard called out as he raced to the Vita-Ray Chamber door to force it open as fast as he could. Peggy joined him to assist.
You had flat lined. The sound of a steady drone from the heart monitor filled the room.
The extreme heat of the chamber had expanded the metal from within, making the door almost impossible to open.
One of the lab coats brought a crowbar to pry the latch. After a little bit of muscle and leverage, the door sprung open. Steam projected outward overflowing the room, blocking the view of you. Howard and Peggy began fanning the air so they could see you.
There you were, still vertically strapped in, head resting on your shoulder, eyes closed…still not breathing.
“…Howard.” Peggy said with breathy distress while looking at you.
Howard walked up to your lifeless form, placed two fingers to your carotid artery on your neck to locate a pulse. As soon as he pressed into your skin your eyes sprang wide open.
You gasp loud and harsh, frightening everyone in the room, causing Howard to fall backward into Peggy.
Exceptionally confused and panicked, your eyes darted side to side trying to get a grasp on what had just occurred. As the heart monitor machine came back to life beeping frantically, the lab started humming again, everyone calling out results and observations over eachother from their stations.
“Heart rate is detected and, on the rise…”
“Oxygen levels at 100%…”
“Blood pressure is getting high, Mr. Stark…”
“Her muscle mass increased by 70%!!”
“If we don’t calm her down, she may go into shock, Agent Carter…”
Peggy took the initiative.
“Everyone, simmer down!” She commanded the room. All the lab coats froze.
She walked over to you and in a soothing tone, spoke to you.
“Y/N, you’re going to be alright. The experiment was a success. You did it.” she said calmly.
She held your face firmly between her hands, so you focused on her. Your breath was short and fast as Peggy continued.
“Deep breaths, Wolf. In…” She inhaled with you.
“Out.” She exhaled with you.
You repeated this until you finally relaxed.
Howard approached you. “Y/N, how do you feel?”
You took a minute to assess yourself.
You noticed your white pajama set was suddenly quite snug. Some parts were even torn especially in the shoulder and thigh area. The hem of your pants that once hung closer to your feet were now shorter revealing your ankles and calves.
“I feel…taller?” You respond first. “And sweaty.”
Stark’s mouth curved into a triumphant grin. The serum worked. And it showed.
Your body was evidently more toned, developed muscles straining against the fabric of your white outfit. Pants now hanging at your calves instead of below your ankles, you’ve obviously grown at least 5 inches. You were a colossus compared to former your self.
Howard offered his hand to help you out after releasing the safety harnesses, but you stumble out like a newborn giraffe as both he and Peggy catch you before you hit the ground.
“Get a wheelchair over here now!” Stark called out.
He looked back at you. “This is the beginning of something big, Y/N. You are going to be part of some of the greatest stories in America’s history.”
You only nod at first since you are too weak to be excited about anything yet.
“Mr. Stark, I’d like to take a nap first if you don’t mind?” You finally responded.
The room chuckled in unison.
~~~~~~~~
2011
You spent the next 58 years battling local crimes in New York, and eventually deploying overseas mostly assisting medical squadrons or rebuilding critical structures for allies and joint forces in combat zones. You were utilized during conflicts such as The Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and The Global War on Terrorism. You were especially useful during Operation Iraqi Freedom clearing potentially hostile locations with Special Forces and patrolling with convoys to secure safe passage for American military to travel.
The Super Soldier Serum’s organic preservatives left you looking and feeling your best since the infusion in 1953. You didn’t look or feel a day over 25 in over five decades because of it. However, you were only able to withstand 90% of the serum’s deposit, therefore you weren’t at full potential of your superhuman capabilities, unfortunately. Nonetheless, you were still a success story in Howard Stark’s eyes.
Sadly, in December 1991 while you were tasked to a recovery detail in Eastern Europe, you returned to American soil to be met by an Agent Nick Fury with grave news. Howard Stark and his wife, Maria, were killed by a HYDRA assassin while you were away. This information absolutely ruined you. You didn’t take Howard’s death very well. You progressively became a shell of your former self, sinking into a depressive state. Since then, you became quite an introvert and kept a low-profile spending most of your time at the gym, in the library reading, or in your sleeping quarters.
Through it all, you still led a life of service to your country when called upon in memory of your surrogate father. Nick Fury assumed command of S.H.I.E.L.D. by this time and took you under his wing, making sure to commission you with new assignments to continue Stark’s legacy.
Even though you were one of Howard’s greatest accomplishments in decades, a resurfacing discovery by S.H.I.E.L.D had the entire compound particularly energetic today. You were leaving the gym and noticed all the lab coats buzzing back and forth whispering to eachother. You also hadn’t seen Fury in a few days, which was unusual because you would usually get a debrief from him of your assignments every night for the following day.
As that thought crossed your mind, he appeared before you.
“Y/N, just the woman I’m looking for. Come with me.” He ushered you down the hall.
You were utterly perplexed, but continued to follow him down the halls having no idea where he was taking you.
“Director Fury?” You began.
He continued walking at a brisk pace. “Hm?” was his response.
“Forgive me if I’m not up to speed on what’s happening here, but….”
You tread lightly about asking too many questions because Fury’s mind was obviously busy, and you weren’t sure if he was really listening to you. You pause as you arrive at a long observing window that peered into what looked to be a hospital room. He gestured towards the window.
“Have a look for yourself.” He invited.
You walk up to the glass and look through. In the hospital bed laid a man peacefully asleep.
Your heart stilled as you stared at this alluring stranger.
He had a thick head of blonde hair, disheveled strands laying softly across his forehead. A chiseled jawline, perfect nose, flawless skin, and the longest lashes any woman would be jealous of. And dear God, arms that look like they could crush concrete.
You stood there with your mouth agape staring at this brawny, angelic creature in front of you.
Fury tilted his head to the side observing your reaction. He was mildly entertained by your moment of shock that rendered you completely speechless.
“You know who this man is, Y/N.” He finally tells you.
You shake your head to snap out of your hypnosis. You look at Fury and raise an eyebrow at him. Clearly indicating you didn’t understand.
“Is that a question or a statement, sir?” You ask.
Fury chuckled as he continued.
“This, my friend, is the one and only Steve Rogers…TheCaptain America.” He explained.
You narrowed your eyes at him in disbelief.
“But sir…” You began.
“Yes, I know, but we discovered him conserved cryogenically under ice a few days ago.” He explained.
You look back through the window.
“Alive? But…how?” You manage to ask.
“Well, blood tests revealed that his blood contained excessive amounts of glucose as a result of his liver processing his glycogen storage, thus lowering the freezing temperature of blood-borne water and creating a 'cryoprotectant'. This process is similar to those of hibernating bears and wood frogs that metabolize glycogen in their liver to circulate ample amounts through their body to reduce the osmotic shrinkage of cells and prevents them from freezing. This, however, has never been seen before in humans.” Fury explained in a ‘matter of fact’ manner.
Your confusion must have reflected on your face because he reiterated by simply saying,
“Howard Stark’s preservative components in the serum allowed Rogers to survive freezing temperatures.”
You nod, “I see. You could’ve just led off with that, sir.”
~~~~~~~~
With Captain America resurrected, the atmosphere at the facility completely shifted. Agent Phil Coulson addressed the public to officially confirm Steve Rogers’ return. Which was an absolute honor for him since he was a huge fan of Captain America and everything he represents. All the lab coats walking around were all a flutter about Captain America’s presence in the building…especially the females which made you utterly nauseous.
You, on the other hand, thought everyone was being overdramatic. You were particularly curious about what would happen next, though. What did this mean for S.H.I.E.L.D.? For America? Where did this leave you? Questions stirred relentlessly in your head for days. Every thought of what could happen next now that Steve was back didn’t have a good outlook for you no matter which way you spun it. These intrusive thoughts keep your brain busy, causing you to lose sleep at night.
You became very irritable with the few people you came into contact with throughout the day, so you decided to spend more time training in the boxing gym hitting the heavy bag. Fury frequently gave you direct orders to hit the showers and sleep it off, which you begrudgingly comply with out of respect.
Fury knew you were less than pleased by Steve’s return, and he was correct in assuming so. Your mental and emotional balance was already thrown off by the passing of Howard and Maria. Now you felt your livelihood hung by a thread because of the sudden homecoming of the prodigal soldier. You felt resentment and anger with every passing thought. And as assignments grew scarce, there were less deployments to redirect your attention leaving you with little to no outlet for your concentrated emotions.
One sleepless night, you once again find yourself hooking deep punches into the midriff of a 100 lbs (45.359 kg) Everlast boxing bag. Your hands only ever wrapped in sports tape, your knuckles are constantly bruised and swollen by the excessive number of times you spend pummeling the cylinder sack.
Sweat beading on your forehead and soaking through your shirt, hissing out loud every time each hand makes contact, you’re so deep in the zone surrounded by fire and wrath that you didn’t notice Steve had entered the room. He stood there watching you intensely while holding his gym bag in one hand, as he held a towel in the other. You deliver one final blow to the bag, sending it across the room like a projectile into the brick wall opposite you. You stood there panting, staring at the pile of other destroyed boxing bags that you’ve launched with your fits of physical rage.
“Wow.” Steve said impressed with a half-smile.
You turn your attention to him, meeting his blue eyes from where you stood. Your eyebrows furrowed still trying to catch your breath. You realize it was only him, so you turned away without responding, (not before pursing your lips together in disdain while rolling your eyes). You pick up your hand towel and wipe your face, then retrieve a new heavy bag, lifting with one hand effortlessly hanging it, replacing the one you just demolished.
Steve coughed awkwardly, sensing the thick air in the room between the two of you.
You started to stretch in front of one of the mirrors that had a ballet barre, completely disregarding the man behind you.
“We haven’t formally met yet.” Steve stated.
You let out an audible exasperated sigh. You barely glance over your shoulder, almost acknowledging him, waiting for him to continue.
“I’m Steve Rogers. Brooklyn. It’s good to finally meet you…”
His voice was smooth and resonating…Like honey. He spoke deep from the chest and his voice projected, yet he didn’t need to yell. His voice just traveled through the room to you like music and almost had you melting into a puddle.
“Get it together, idiot…” You told yourself.
You decided to remain cordial. Even though you’d rather not engage with him at all, it’s what Howard would’ve wanted.
“You know who I am?” You finally responded with your back still facing him.
“I know of you, yes. Word is you were my protégé after I disappeared.” He replied.
“Is that all that was said about me?” You asked.
“Of course not.” He assured confidently.
You turned around while dabbing your neck with your towel, then draped it around your nape holding each end with your hands. You looked at Steve and started to walk towards him. Steve was positively handsome, and although he appeared intimidating and confident, he still had little experience interacting with women…especially if he found them attractive. As the gap closed between the two of you, his heart proceeded to beat faster. Your supersonic hearing picked it up right away, and you relished the effect you had on him.
Steve tried to diffuse his ascending apprehension as you stood feet from him.
“Um,” he started to scratch the back of his head bashfully, “if you’re up to it, maybe you can show me around the compound sometime?” He suggested.
You raise your eyebrows and inquisitively squint at him. Your mouth involuntarily curled into a grin because he looks so stinkin’ cute standing there tensed up in suspense, holding his breath, waiting on your response.
“Sure, Cap.” You say curtly. Steve let out a sigh of relief.
“Wanna start tomorrow?” You ask him.
“Uh, sure.” He replied.
“Meet me here at 0800?”
“Ok!”
You nod at him, shoulder your backpack and breeze past him without another word, leaving him slightly stunned and bewildered.
He watched you leave until he couldn’t see you anymore.
“Phew…that was exhausting.” Steve said out loud to himself.
You chuckle to yourself because you were totally close enough to hear that.
You kind of felt bad messing with him, but you’re the one that has seniority here. Even though he’s older than you and is the original super soldier, he’s “the man out of time” having been asleep under ice for almost 70 years. The horrific things you’ve seen and experienced during those years have hardened your heart and you weren’t one to coddle anyone anymore. Not even America’s favorite poster boy from Brooklyn.
~~~~~~~~
At 0745, you walk into the gym and see Steve sitting on a stool in a corner of the boxing ring. You shoot a perplexed look at him and smirk.
“How long have you been here?” You call out to him.
He looked up.
“Long enough.” He said simply smiling back.
“Waiting to go a few rounds with me, Cap?” You ask almost too flirtatiously.
Steve scoffed then stood up.
“No ma’am, I would never hit a lady.” He responded.
“I’m no average lady, Rogers.” You replied sternly. You weren’t about to let him categorize or underestimate you.
Steve’s smile faded to a look of fascination and curiosity.
“Should we head out then?” You ask.
Steve nodded and exited the gym with you.
~~~~~~~~
“I never knew a place could have so many…levels.” Steve said as you walk off the elevator where the living quarters were.
Up until now, you were the only one residing in dorms. Now Steve shared this building with you but had his room in another wing. It had a common area, an impressive kitchen, dining and living room and a full gym on a separate floor.
“S.H.I.E.L.D. obviously spared no expense.” You stated.
Steve nodded in agreement. He continued to admire the surroundings.
“So? What do you think, Cap?” You finally ask.
Steve looked at you confused.
You gesture to everything around you.
“All of this. What do you think?”
Steve let out a puff of breath and looked around again in thought.
“Well…” He started “it’s going to take a lot getting used to.” He finished.
“Mmhm.” You hum.
He continued.
“But I’ll manage.” He added confidently.
“I sure hope so.” A voice rang out from across the living room area.
Director Fury stood at the doorway, then proceeded to walk towards you.
“Director.” You greeted as he approached. He nodded at you.
“I see you two are getting along just fine.” Fury said with an almost visible smirk.
You released a faint laugh.
“Y/N has been very hospitable.” Steve responded earnestly then looked at you with a soft smile.
You felt yourself blushing when your eyes met his.
“Snap out of it, you idiot.” You scold yourself.
“Good, because one day, you’ll need to work as a team.” Fury explained.
You snap your head at Fury with anger rising in your chest like lava.
“Director??” You ask almost with panic in your voice.
Nick Fury released an irritated sigh, rolling his eye before facing you.
“Y/N, we discussed this. Why do you insist on acting this is the first time you’re hearing this?”
“Because, sir, I never agreed to it.” You pointed out.
“Last time I checked, Wolf, my title is ‘Director.’ I don’t need your consent nor your approval.” Fury retorted in a very parental tone.
Steve just sat, arms folded across his chest while his eyes flitted between you and Fury like he was watching a tennis game.
“With all due respect, Director, I refuse.” You declared.
“Excuse me?” Fury dared you to repeat.
“I refuse.” You restated boldly.
Fury began to open his mouth to reprimand you until Steve cut in.
“Ok now this is escalating quickly.” Steve said while inserting himself between you and Fury.
“Director, perhaps allow Miss Wolf and I to build more rapport before talking about working in the field together? We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.” He suggested.
Fury studied Steve, then looked at you.
“Fine. Understand this now, though, when you two are called upon, you will be responding…together.” Fury declared.
You only respond by crossing your arms. Fury turned on his heel and exited, leaving you there with this annoyingly reasonable and infuriatingly gorgeous super soldier.

Summary: Steve Rogers was supposed to get the serum and become Captain America. An enemy agent was supposed to shoot him and Erskine, keeping the Allies from ever getting a weapon like that. Y/N was supposed to be in the room, supporting her boyfriend and keeping an eye on things along with her fellow agent, Peggy Carter. None of them end up with the roles they'd expected.

Category: Fluff, Angst
A/N: I haven’t watched tfa or what if? in a hot minute so this ended up as a kind of mix of all of those with some other fun stuff thrown in there

"Are you sure you want to do this?"
I couldn't help the question escaping my lips as I sat at the bar with my boyfriend, Steve Rogers. He looked even paler than usual as we sat together for our last night before Steve would risk everything in an experiment to become a supersoldier tomorrow morning. We'd both been given special leave from camp and our regular duties to spend tonight together, both of us mentally preparing.
"I'm sure," he said, after taking a long breath in and out. He looked at me with a calm smile, confidence written in every line of his face despite the massive uncertainty that followed us through every minute of this war.
His answer didn't surprise me one bit.
I'd only met Steve a short time ago, when he showed up at camp for training along with tons of other recruits. Despite the fact that he was clearly nowhere near healthy enough to be here without the support of Doctor Erskine, and that General Phillips clearly didn't like him very well, he never let any of that stop him or slow him down.
I'd fallen in love almost at first sight.
Despite the mountain of obstacles in his way, Steve had fought to be part of the war, to defend justice and freedom, no matter what barriers anyone put in his way. From the US military to the enemy, he did everything in his power to stand for what was right, no matter who stood against him. What more could I ask for in a partner?
"You're coming with me tomorrow, right?" he asked, looking at me with a touch of uncertainty breaking through his expression. It was the first and only sign he'd shown of fear for tomorrow and what it might bring.
"Of course, Steve," I said, smiling as I reached out to take his hand. I'll be there with you every step of the way, both before and after."
He nodded, giving me a tight smile which I returned. Neither of us was willing to entertain the possibility that there might not be an after tomorrow.
We finished our drinks, taking our time and enjoying the moment together, then left hand-in-hand to return to our separate army bunks for the night. I knew sleep would be difficult, but I did my best to drift off quickly, since I'd need to be as rested as possible for the morning.
The drive to the facility and all the procedures that went with it passed in a blur when the time came. I stayed by Steve's side as much as I could, both of us resolute and determined as we entered the top secret facility where Steve would become the world's first super soldier.
"Don't worry, he's going to be fine."
I nearly jumped out of my skin at the sound of Howard Stark's voice behind me. I'd been lost in thought and hadn't noticed his approach, and couldn't hold back a slight glare when I turned to face him.
"You're strung as tight as a live wire."
"I don't think that's a real expression, Howard."
He shrugged. "What makes any expression more real than another? If you say it often and with enough confidence, it becomes one."
With that settled, at least in his mind, he headed off towards the waiting machines and instruments he needed to tend to. I just shook my head as I watched him go.
"How are you feeling?" asked the much more calming voice of Peggy Carter from my right. I sighed as I turned to her, arguably my best friend in the world, and she gave me a sympathetic look.
"I've felt better. I just... I hope he's okay. Howard says he will be, but Howard's a maniac, so what does he know?"
Peggy gave me a soft smile as I turned to look at Steve, who stood across the room talking to Doctor Erskine.
"He will be fine, Y/N. And once this is over, the two of you can keep fighting the bad guys and saving the world even more than you already have."
I sighed, at last turning my attention back to my friend and willing myself to believe her words.
"I'm sure you're right, Peggy."
Time seemed to fly by and move at the pace of molasses somehow at the same time as Howard made the last adjustments on the machines and Steve had a last few words with Doctor Erskine. I waited a few steps from the machine with Peggy by my side as Steve finally approached. The time had come.
And then a shot rang out.
I whipped my head around in horror towards the source of the noise, to find Doctor Erskine lifeless on the ground, a man with a gun hovering over him. Officers all around the room ran to take him down, but not quickly enough.
He fired off another shot. It hit Steve right in the chest.
"No!" I screamed, surging forward to try to get to my boyfriend, my best friend, the love of my life, but my progress was stopped by an even greater force pulling me backward. I whirled around, ready to throw off whatever was pulling me backward, and to my surprise found Peggy.
"I'm sorry, Y/N, I'm so sorry," she said, continuing to drag me nonetheless. Then she turned, shouting across the room. "Howard!"
Somehow, amidst the screaming and chaos in the room and the gunshot that still seemed to ring everywhere and drown out everything else, Howard apparently heard her.
"We're a go, Peggy! Now!"
I finally caught sight of Steve then, laying on the floor without moving despite the flood of movement happening around him. My heart leapt into my throat, and I was about to shove Peggy off me and go to him again when, somehow, I was looking at the ceiling instead.
Peggy hovered over me and I moved to get up, but restraints slapped me into place as, finally, I realized what was happening.
I was in the supersoldier machine. Instead of Steve, Howard and Doctor Erskine's concoction was being pumped into my bloodstream while the one it was intended for, my wonderful boyfriend, lay dead or dying a few feet away.
For better or worse, the despair welling in my chest didn't have the chance to overtake me as a pain like nothing I'd ever felt completely took over every thought, sense, and feeling in my body. Somehow, I was on fire, and the metal box around me was closing in. My limbs were being ripped away one by one, my skin was stretching to the point of breaking, my blood was boiling-
I screamed, but it felt like a faraway version of me that did it. I wasn't in my own body anymore, rather looking down from somewhere else as my brain short circuited with every nerve ending screaming.
And then suddenly, I was back. The pain started to ebb, and I grit my teeth and focused on breathing and hanging onto survival no matter what it took. I would do it, I would survive this world-ending pain, and I would do it for Steve. And hopefully, by some insane miracle, he would do the same for me.
At last, the rest of the pain drained away, leaving me breathing heavily but otherwise feeling better than I ever had in my life. Slowly, I felt the contraption Howard had built tip upright, and my porthole viewing window revealed the room I'd just left.
I had no idea how long it had taken, but based on the chaos that still dominated the slightly more empty room I guessed it hadn't been too long. At last, the metal door opened, and I stumbled out. I looked down, intending to finally run to Steve, but he wasn't there.
"Y/N!"
"How do you feel?"
I turned to find Peggy and Howard, their voices respectively concerned and curious, then found I had to look down a little further than I ever had before. I blinked a few times, the world briefly spinning, and realized, somehow, I was taller than I'd been a few minutes ago.
"Do you think she can speak?" I heard Howard ask, leaning around me to talk to Peggy. "Maybe some of the muscle growth impacted her vocal cords-"
"Where's Steve?" I managed to ask, overcoming my shock and inadvertently answering Howard's question. He looked at me in surprise, then started dancing around me with scientific instruments and taking measurements, so I turned to Peggy.
"Y/N, are you alright? I-"
"Where is he, Peggy?"
She hesitated, then seemed to realize I was stubborn enough not to let this go until I got an answer. "A few of the soldiers we still trust took him to the hospital."
"Take me to him."
"Y/N, I really don't think-"
"Peggy." My best friend and I stood perfectly frozen as we held eye contact, Howard still moving all around me but neither of us paying him any attention. "I need to see Steve."
She sighed, then gave an abrupt nod. "Howard, if anyone asks, tell them where we've gone. And keep me updated on anything you find out."
"Hold on, I still need to-"
"You can do experiments on our friend later," she snapped. I gave her a grateful smile as I followed behind her, out of the room where the world had just upended itself completely. I loved Howard, but sometimes he didn't know the meaning of the word "boundary".
Still half in a daze, I followed Peggy to a car outside. She went around to the driver's side while I went to climb into the passenger's seat. I tried to pull the door open, something I'd done a thousand times before, but the door ripped off its hinges in my hand like it was made of paper. I stared at it blankly, trying to fight off the wave of shock threatening to totally overcome me.
"Y/N?"
I shook myself out of it, looking back up at Peggy.
"I'm fine."
We got a new car, and for the first part of our drive, I tried quietly testing out a few of my new limits. I could bend metal like it was nothing, and I was clearly stronger and more muscled than I'd been before the serum. Erskine's serum was a success; I was officially a supersoldier.
As we made our way through the busy streets of New York to the hospital, my mind wandered to other things. I glanced over at Peggy, white knuckled on the steering wheel while otherwise projecting outward calm.
"Why did you do it, Peggy?" I asked, unable to help the question from bursting out of me.
Peggy glanced over to me, then back to the road. She was silent for almost two full blocks before she finally answered.
"You were always our contingency plan," she started, her voice a little gravelly. "While you and Steve were having your last night of drinks, Howard and I had drinks of our own. He was worried about the serum falling into the wrong hands, especially after Colonel Phillips pushed for that absolute prat from training camp. We talked about it for some time, and neither of us could come up with a better option than you."
I didn't respond, instead opting to stare straight ahead as I tried to process everything Peggy had just told me. She gave me a few seconds, then continued.
"I'm sorry we never told you, Y/N," she said. "We didn't have much time, and honestly, it was never supposed to come to this."
I nodded, mostly to let her know I'd heard her. My brain was working overtime, but one question kept ringing through my mind.
"Why me?"
Peggy glanced at me a few times, splitting her attention between me and the road.
"Why you? I thought that would be rather self-evident."
She briefly turned her attention away from me as she at last pulled into a parking spot in front of the hotel. I started to shift in my seat, ready to just let the question keep echoing in my head while I ran to find Steve, but Peggy put a hand on my arm to stop me.
"Y/N, listen to me. You are just as good a choice for this serum as Steve. You're strong, kind, and a fundamentally good person- not only are we lucky to have you as the world's first supersoldier, but I'm lucky to have you as a friend. I know this must be overwhelming, and I'm sorry I put you in this situation without warning. But I need you to believe it when I say you are up to this task."
I took a deep breath as Peggy held my stare, willing myself to take in her words. I wanted to, but honestly now that we were at the hospital, I couldn't really think of much beyond Steve.
I gave Peggy a tight-lipped smile, then pulled my arm out of her grasp and moved for the car door. I nearly pulled this one off its hinges too, then remembered to be much, much more gentle than I'd normally be.
Peggy gave me a look as we got out of the car together and headed towards the hospital, but I pretended not to notice. Thankfully, she just let it go, and helped me get to Steve as quickly as possible.
When we arrived at his hospital room, he wasn't there. We'd been told he was in emergency surgery, and the doctors were currently fighting to save his life. I plopped down in the chair next to his bed and resolved to wait.
"He's not going to be back for some time, you know," Peggy said gently from her place by the door. "You might be waiting here for a while."
"Better than waiting in a lab while all the military execs talk about what to do with me now."
Peggy pursed her lips, but didn't voice whatever she was feeling. She just nodded, and came to take a seat by my side.
"Then I suppose I'm in for the long haul too."
****************
When they finally brought Steve back in, he was unconscious. Alive, to my massive relief, but unconscious and still not safe as he was fighting to recover from his injury and the resulting surgery. I didn't move an inch from my seat by his side.
Peggy stayed with me for a while, but eventually had to start working with and talking to various generals and officials again. None of them wanted to let me out in the field anyway, so I didn't have anyone challenging my decision to stay by Steve's side.
When I was alone with him, I talked to him, telling him about everything that had happened after he'd been shot and working through my own attempts at processing everything that had happened. I started exploring my powers in my own time too, within the confines of the room. I could bend the metal instruments left on the table in one corner, and could do more than double the number of pushups I'd been able to do before without breaking a sweat.
I was in the middle of testing whether I could jump high enough to touch the ceiling (yes) and then with how much of my arm I could touch it with when Peggy came back into the room. She grinned when she saw what I was doing, but I quickly stopped to look at her instead.
"Not going stir crazy, I hope?" she teased. I rolled my eyes.
"It's for science, Peggy. Come on."
She snorted, but didn't challenge my statement all the same. Instead, she crossed the room to take a seat beside Steve, next to the chair I usually sat in.
"How is he doing?" she asked softly, staring now at Steve instead of me. I sighed and went to sit next to her.
"Still fighting through his coma, as I'm sure you can see," I said. It had been just less than a week now, but Steve still hadn't woken up. "The doctors say his injuries are healing well, though, and they're hopeful that he'll wake up soon."
Peggy nodded, keeping her gentle stare on Steve for another minute longer, then at last turned to me. Her expression became much more serious, and I tried to brace myself for whatever she would say next.
"We need you back," she said bluntly, not bothering to beat around the bush. "I've worked with Howard to get permission for you to join us–meaning Howard and myself, under General Phillips–in the European theater. We don't have permission for more than just you being there yet, but this is the closest we've come to getting you cleared for active duty. If you stay, we may never get you out of a lab or off a stage again."
I frowned, processing her words. I hadn't realized there'd been a risk of being trapped in a lab or on a stage for the rest of the war, although if I'd given it a second of thought, I probably would have.
"I know you don't want to leave Steve," said Peggy, turning to look at him one last time. "I can't say I really want to either. But he wouldn't want you to be cooped up in here, when there's so much you could be doing out there."
I sighed, staring at Steve as I felt Peggy's eyes drilling into me. I knew she was right; Steve and I hadn't gone through everything we'd been through so far, both alone and together, just to stand by and do nothing if the opportunity came up for us to make a difference.
"Alright," I finally said, tearing my eyes away from Steve and hardening my resolve. "Let's do this, then."
Peggy smiled, and I didn't let myself look back as I followed her out of the room.
****************
The next few weeks were an absolute blur. Peggy (and Howard, whenever he was around) kept pushing for me to be allowed into combat, and just about every other top brass officer pushed back. Despite the fact they refused to clear me, I'd been kept plenty busy, running around with Peggy doing all the codebreaking, organizational, and action-coordinating duties we'd done before and then some. Whenever I finally collapsed onto my bedroll for a few hours of sleep at the end of the day, I basically slept like the dead.
Still, I jolted up quickly enough when Peggy shook my shoulder just past two in the morning.
"What do you want?" I mumbled, the words only half-intelligible thanks to the sleep slurring my words. After the initial adrenaline that I was being attacked had faded, the drowsiness had swept back in with a vengeance.
"Some soldiers just returned to camp," she said, her voice a hissing whisper. The urgency and the secrecy made me sit up a little straighter, some of the sleepiness fading away. "They're what's left of a regiment captured by Hydra, the rest of whom are currently being held at a base some distance into enemy territory."
"Okay..."
"Since Steve's talked to me about Bucky, I'm assuming you know about him too?"
"...Of course. Obviously I never met him, but... Steve talks about him all the time. Why?"
"His regiment–him included–is the one being held by Hydra."
I shot up, finally fully awake. "What?"
"Bucky, along with most of the other soldiers in his regiment, are being held at a Hydra base not far from our current position. While this is obviously awful-"
"If anything happens to him, Steve-"
"I think it could also prove exactly the opportunity we need."
My eyes snapped to Peggy, not even bothering to hide how crazy I thought she was as I looked at her.
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"Y/N, you are being wasted sitting in this camp doing behind the scenes duties, even more than you were before you took the serum. Neither of us wants to risk everything and get court-martialed for something ridiculous, no matter how tempting it may be. But going after Bucky and his regiment, going on a mission to save them... that might be worth it. And it might be everything we need to get everyone to stop second-guessing your importance in combat."
"Are you suggesting we go rogue, somehow sneak across enemy lines, and that I then go single-handedly into an active Hydra base to free almost an entire captured regiment?"
"And destroy the Hydra base in the process, yes."
I sighed, staring blankly at a spot on my blankets for a minute, then swung my legs out of bed and looked at Peggy.
"Alright, I'm in. It's been a little too long since I've done something stupid and reckless anyway."
Just under three hours later, I found myself jumping out of a plane towards a Hydra base, in the middle of enemy territory. Famous last words, I guess, saying I hadn't been doing anything reckless and then jumping straight into the most reckless thing I'd ever done.
I landed in the Hydra base behind a cluster of tanks, then managed to sneak my way inside. Thankfully, I knew enough about interior layouts to make a pretty good guess of where prisoners might be kept, and it wasn't long before I found the men from the missing regiment in a series of cages.
One of them was talking to a guard, thankfully the only one in the room, until I knocked the guard out.
"And who are you?" asked the man behind bars, sounding pleasantly surprised.
"Captain America," I said simply, standing tall with my shoulders back. That had been the planned name for Steve, and the name Peggy and I insisted on keeping, despite the number of male higher-ups who didn't like a woman having that title.
"Well, Captain, any chance you could get us out of these cages?"
"That's what I'm here for," I said, quickly setting to work. "Do you know a man named Sergeant Barnes?"
"Yeah, but he's not here. Some of the guards took him away not long ago. They've been running experiments in rooms on the other side of the compound."
I swore under my breath, then stepped back as the cage door swung open. I looked the man in the eye as he met my stare with a new respect.
"What's your name?"
"Tim Dugan."
"Alright Dugan, do you think you can get these men out of here and on the path back to friendly territory?"
"With the door wide open like this? Not gonna be a problem, sweetheart."
I narrowed my eyes at him, but he just grinned back, no hint of the condescension usually associated with that nickname anywhere on his face. Instead, he looked excited, the wild gleam I'd seen in my own and Steve's eyes before shining back at me. I sighed.
"Alright, good, then get on it. I've got a sergeant to save."
"See you on the other side," he said with a nod. I nodded back, then turned and sprinted deeper into the base.
After ducking and dodging lots of armed guards, as well as knocking out a few when I accidentally barged into the wrong room, I finally flung open a door to find a man strapped on the table in front of me. He was alone in the room, and to my relief, he matched the appearance of the man I'd seen in almost every photograph Steve had before joining the military.
"Sergeant Barnes?" I asked, not waiting for an answer as I moved to start unstrapping him from the table. He looked up at me, bewildered and clearly exhausted.
"And who are you?"
"Y/N Y/L/N, otherwise known as Captain America. I'm Steve's girlfriend."
Bucky's face lit up at that, the suspicion that had been building in his eyes disappearing in an instant.
"Steve has a girlfriend? Now I know you're lying to me."
I glanced back at him to find a crooked smile on his face, and I couldn't help returning one of my own. I undid the last strap, then moved around the table to help Bucky stand.
"Come on, let's get you out of here. Then you can give Steve shit to his face."
Bucky chuckled, but it quickly turned into a wheeze, which made me incredibly nervous. I subtly shifted him so I was taking more of his weight, but before we could make much progress to the door, it came flying open on its own.
"A valiant effort at a rescue attempt. Too bad it is going to be in vain."
We both froze in our tracks, looking up to find ourselves face to face with a man with goggles and a lab coat, standing tall in the doorway and towering over us, one of the biggest guns I'd ever seen in his hands leveled right at us.
"We had heard the Allies created a supersoldier, despite our best efforts to stop them. We hadn't realized it was a woman."
He scoffed the last word, and I scowled, more than ready to put this punk in his place. Before I could, however, he pushed a setting on the weapon, and it began firing up.
"Fortunately, now that you have come right to us, there will be plenty of time for us to figure out just what made the Allies decide to send you into combat."
I frowned, mostly ignoring him while I looked for any way out of this situation. Punching this guy straight in the face felt like a good option, but despite my super strength and speed he could probably shoot me before I got to him, and since this was my first combat mission I had no idea just how well my new super-self held up against bullets, let alone whatever the hell this thing would fire.
As my brain ran through possibilities searching for options, the man turned his gaze to Bucky, an expression of mock-sympathy on his face.
"Now that we have her, Sergeant Barnes, we unfortunately no longer have use for you."
Bucky tensed beside me, and my full focus snapped back to the situation at hand rather than ways to get out of it as the crazy gun before us started heating up, whirring like it was about to fire. It was leveled right at Bucky's head.
I swore, time slowing down as I came to a conclusion. My only real option was to push Bucky out of the way and take the shot for him. I'd just have to hope my super-metabolism also equalled super-healing, and try to take it in the shoulder instead of the head or chest. Then, I'd have to find a way to get up and keep swinging, and hopefully Bucky had enough energy left in him to help me get the gun. Otherwise I'd just have to figure it out myself.
I started to move, ready to block Bucky and hopefully come up swinging, refusing to dwell on how often the word "hope" appeared in my plan, but then the gun went flying across the room all on its own.
For half a second, the only thought in my head was: Do I have magic powers now too?
Then, a metal fist appeared in the doorway, absolutely creaming the guy who'd been blocking it before, dropping him unconscious to the ground like a sack of potatoes.
Bucky and I looked up in sync, confused and (on my part) ready to fight a new threat, only to see a metal man step into view. His eyes glowed blue, and it looked like a big suit of armor come to life. I shifted on my feet, trying to determine whether this was a friend or if I needed to attack this thing, and then its face lifted up, revealing another, human face beneath.
"Oh great, you two have met now. I don't know whether to be happy or brace myself for just how much more shit I'm about to take as a result."
"Steve!" I cried, rushing towards him and wrapping him in the tightest hug my supersoldier strength would allow. Thankfully, the metal suit meant he was fine, despite the enthusiasm. Behind me, I heard Bucky thump into the table as he caught himself after my support disappeared, but I couldn't bring myself to care.
"Hey, sweetheart. I missed you."
"I missed you too," I said, pulling back from the hug to kiss him, hard. For the first time in our relationship I had to get up on my toes to kiss him, even with the extra super-height, which felt incredibly weird. After a second I pulled back, giving his suit a once-over and raising an eyebrow.
"So what exactly is this?"
"A supersuit," he replied with a grin. "Howard's apparently been working on one for a while, but after I got shot he made it more of a priority."
"After you got what?"
I turned to see Bucky behind me, still leaning on the table, looking at Steve with a mix of concern, fury, and exasperation. Steve moved past me to go wrap his friend in a bearhug, and I caught a grin on his face as he went. Bucky didn't look amused, but he also didn't have the strength to do anything about Steve in a metal suit hugging him for dear life.
"Don't worry about it, Buck," he said, still grinning, before turning back to me. Bucky kept frowning between the two of us, but Steve and I both ignored it. "So what now?"
"Now we get out of here, and destroy the base on our way out," I said simply. Steve beamed, and even Bucky's expression turned slightly more pleasant at the thought. "Let's do this."
Like we'd spent our whole lives working together, we moved out of the room in perfect sync. Steve supported Bucky, following right behind me as we moved through the base. We threw stealth out the window now that we had everything we needed, and whenever we came across someone who might try to stop us, I knocked them out before they could so much as reach for their weapon. When the occasional guard got past me, Steve easily took care of them on cleanup.
We planted bombs on support pillars and in power rooms as we gradually made our way towards the exit, then pushed the button to start the short timers once we made it outside. We sprinted for the treeline, Steve in his suit keeping pace with me and my superspeed even though he was carrying Bucky, and made it about a hundred yards into the woods before everything behind us exploded.
The three of us stopped, turning back to watch the wreckage we'd just caused. I couldn't help smiling, since the destruction of that base not only meant the destruction of a terrible Hydra facility, but also a successful mission under my belt we could throw in the face of anyone who doubted me.
"Damn. That's sure a pretty sight."
The three of us whirled around as one to find Dugan, the soldier I'd met earlier, and the rest of the regiment standing behind us. Steve got into a fighting stance, but Bucky and I just smiled.
"I let you out and you only got this far? You might have some skills to work on, Dugan," I said, beaming at him nonetheless. He smiled right back.
"Unlike your trio, I had to get the whole regiment out without being caught. Besides, I can't say I mind how this timing worked out."
"Yeah, me neither."
After Bucky was welcomed back into the relieved arms of his regiment and we got Steve introduced, our group slowly started making our way back to friendly territory and the familiar camp waiting beyond. It took a little over a day, and I had to step into the action a few more times to deal with barriers trying to keep people moving between sides of the war, but eventually, we made it back.
As soon as we came within sight of the camp, we could hear cheering. People flocked out to see us, beaming as we staggered in triumphantly, arms around each other and heads held high. Steve stood on my right, Bucky on my left, Dugan and the rest of his squad right behind us. I smiled as Peggy approached, and I swear I could feel puzzle pieces falling into place.
"Let's hear it for Captain America!" cried Steve, smiling at me as he let up the shout. Everyone cheered, and towards the back of the crowd I could see General Phillips with his arms crossed but a smile on his face nonetheless. It disappeared the second he caught me looking, but I'd known it was there.
Steve wrapped his arm a little more tightly around me, his suit currently off and hidden somewhere safe, and I leaned down to kiss him. The crowd cheered even louder, and in that moment, I knew for certain that nothing Hydra or the Axis powers threw at us could touch us.
Captain America, the Iron Man, Agent Carter, and the Howling Commandos were about to turn the world on its head, and no one would ever be able to stand in our way.

A/N: Thank you for this request! Hope you enjoy
Tumblr media
While your dad was out gallivanting with women or doing whatever he was doing with his inventions, Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis took you in. They didn’t mind so you were a perfect house guest and they already saw you as their own daughter. You didn’t go to school since your dad taught you everything you needed to know so you stayed and helped out around the house once Edwin began leaving the house more often.
Your dad kept you off the record so no one knew you existed which was helpful in this current time. He had to disappear as he was wanted for selling his weapons or, as he liked to call them, his Bad Babies. You had been with the Jarvis' since the news broke and you had no idea where your dad was but you knew he wasn’t in New York but Jarvis was out too much for your dad to not be up to something.

Since you were a naturally curious person, one night when Edwin left home late, you stayed up waiting to see when he’d get back. He came home a few hours later but you heard another female voice. It was Anna since she was asleep so you went downstairs to the kitchen to see what was up.
“What were you doing out so late?” you asked him, eyeing him and the woman next to him.
“Miss Stark you should be asleep right now,” Jarvis said, surprised that you were awake at this hour.
You shrugged and looked at the woman. She looked familiar but you couldn’t place her, “Who’s that?” you asked.
“This is Miss Peggy Carter,” he said, introducing her.
“Wait, the Peggy Carter? The one that dad worked with alongside Captain America?”
Jarvis nodded.
“I’m sorry did you say Miss Stark?” Peggy asked, “As in Howard Stark? As in, you’re his daughter?”
“That’s me,” you said, “Don’t feel too bad. He doesn’t mention me to anyone. Likes to keep me a secret.”
Peggy nodded slowly.
“Are you alright Miss Carter? You look a bit beat up,” you pointed out, noticing the bruises on her face.
“Oh yes I’m quite alright,” she said, quickly looking over to Edwin, “Just need to get patched up and I’ll be good to go.”
“I can do it,” you said, heading to the kitchen where you knew the first aid materials were held, “Mrs. Jarvis has been teaching me a few things.”
“Well then, if you two are okay here, I’m going to go to bed now. Goodnight,” Jarvis said, heading upstairs.
Peggy sat down on one of the chairs and you began your work. You two went back and forth talking and getting to know each other more.
