ok, so i looked into todd holland because i wanted to see what the racism allegations were referring to, and here's what i found.
he directed a very bad movie, "Krippendorf's Tribe" in that premiered in 1998.
"A university professor is paid to find the last undiscovered tribe of New Guinea. When he fails to find the tribe, he comes home, and rather than admitting that he's failed, he gives a lecture about the Shelmikedmu tribe (named after his children: Shelly, Mike, and Edmund) and then has his family dress like "Shelmikedmus," so that he can film them as proof of his discovery." -IMDb
even at the time of release it received some pretty negative reviews due to the pretty racist caricatures used by the characters pretending to be aboriginal people, and their costumes which were essentially blackface.
however, that was 24 years ago, and i wanted to see what holland was up to today.
he's pretty inactive on twitter, all he does there is link you to his instagram (@toddholland3), where he seems to be most active. most of his posts are about his family with an occasionally political post here and there:
Tumblr media
apparently his husband did a panel about BLM in hollywood but i couldn't find a recording from it.
Tumblr media
according to his IMDb bio, he became co-chair for the Director's Guild of America's Diversity Task Force in 2015, "working to increase the number of women and men of color directing episodic TV."
so he seems to have grown some since 1998 and considering he lists his film school thesis movie in his bio but not one of his two (2) feature films, he seems to want to leave krippendorf's tribe in the past.
Tumblr media
i also wanna add that i'm not trying to dispute or discredit some of the very valid criticisms about colorism in the casting choices. i just wanted to look into a talking point that i kept hearing get brought up without elaboration as to the how/why.

The Wizard (1989)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
Only the most nostalgia-biased viewers could argue The Wizard is anything but a thinly-disguised commercial for Nintendo and Universal studios. I knew this going in so it didn’t affect my rating but something about this movie - and I’m not sure what - infuriated me. The film’s got a couple of unintentionally funny moments and more than a few scenes are great meme material. The rest is this jumbled, tone-deaf would-be family film that makes you wonder “what were they thinking?”
Traumatized after the death of his twin sister, Jimmy Woods (Luke Edwards) is now in a near catatonic state; unable to talk and obsessed with getting back to California. Caught trying to run away AGAIN, he is sent to a mental institution by his parents but rescued by his half-brother Corey (Fred Savage). On the road, alone and with little money, the siblings team up with a girl named Haley (Jenny Lewis) after she realizes Jimmy’s extreme video game-playing skills can get them cash by hustling arcade players. Then, they set their sights on bigger fish: a $50,000 competition at Universal Studios. Along the way, the trio is hounded by Corey’s father (Beau Bridges) and older brother Nick (Christian Slater) as well as a child-recovery expert named Putnam (Will Seltzer).
As you might’ve gathered, this is one of those “and then” kinda movies. It’s a string of events that do not fit together all that well but somehow lead to one another. Since there’s no clear goal from the get-go, you sit there, wondering what you’re supposed to latch onto and where anything is headed. For the longest time, the only antagonist is Putnam, who is only branded a villain because he is trying to return Jimmy to his mom and stepdad. Oh, but he’s doing it “for the money” - as if that mattered. The kids he’s following get robbed not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES on their journey. Wow, it’s almost as if a bunch of pre-teens hoofing it on their own is a bad idea! Then, we are finally introduced to the big video game tournament. It’s about time. Before then, what were we doing? Following a 12-year-old who believes his brother who is barely able to utter anything besides “California” doesn’t belong in a mental institution? Please.
This plot is so repetitive and boring, you almost forget the reason you started watching it in the first place: the moments which are “so bad they’re good”. Yes, we’re talking about Jackey Vinson as Lucas, the Power Glove-wearing rival who may be even better at video games than the brain-dead prodigy. He’s got some funny lines. You can also have fun knowing this was the first time we ever got a glimpse at Super Mario Bros. 3, which was a big deal back then. The plot is idiotic and easy to ridicule when it isn’t driving you nuts. It alternates between the infuriating as the adults squabble over who is going to track down the missing children first and incompetently dramatic as the kids contemplate their sad existences. I’ve felt more emotional after accidentally pouring sour milk into my bowl of cereal.
At 100 minutes, The Wizard is way overlong. It’s so needlessly overwritten and bogged down with unnecessary characters, plot points and developments it doesn’t even manage to advertise the stuff it wants to sell properly. I don’t even think children or Nintendo enthusiasts would like it, as it takes AGES to get to the video game stuff. This viewer couldn’t wait for this cynical, charmless picture to end. (On DVD, March 28, 2019)

Me: oh wow! This is such a good fanfic, I love how this author portrayed all these characters and how they created an equally simple yet complex fanfic with just ten chapters! I can see what more work they have! :D
Profile: 1 fanfiction written
Me: I’m decaying as we speak, my body is already decomposing back into the earth from whence I came, my soul is flying back into the heavens as i write this, my devastation has reached the core of my soul and shall remain in this world long after I have gone.
Anyway, love the fic!! Thank you so much for writing this 💖💖
