#the fallen gods trilogy
Honestly I pictured Skedi from Godkiller way more cartoonish than any of the images I've seen off him so far

So she doesn't bring her staff, which she needs to help her walk, or any of the other valuable things she could use when in this terrible traumatic place.
But she does bring this worlds equivalent of a morning after pill.

Ok I just finished an amazing two books and I need someone to talk to about it and there’s no tumblr tag for it 😭
If you need a new book to read, I highly recommend Godkiller and Sunbringer by Hannah Kaner. It’s about a mercenary woman who is hired to kill gods, because gods are illegal in this country. But things kick off when she meets a young girl who is bound to a god of white lies, who she may risk killing if she slays the god.
There is an extremely diverse cast of characters. The mercenary woman is bi and physically disabled (she has an amputated leg), one of the other main characters is black and has two moms, two of the most important side characters are a lesbian couple (one of whom is Deaf and the other whom is in a wheelchair due to chronic pain), and another side character is a trans woman.

Having reread CDTH and Mr. Impossible, am at long, long last reading Greywaren (buts it’s the middle of the night and I’m creating awful habits so I only read the prologue). Accidentally read the last sentence. Made a little squeaking sound free from inhibition. I’m not gonna breathe for 335 pages

TULIP WITH THE GUY EVER
this is for peter!! im feral for this man my god this is long for nothing happening- guys i am SO fucking rusty prompt: an act of affection so blatant everyone notices roommate!peter <;3 flower prompts
Tumblr media
It’s hard not to look at her.
There’s so much to observe, so much to place his attention on- how she smiles, the way she taps the sides of her mugs before she sips her tea. She’s a vision in red lipstick and he’s the kind of person that’s blessed to be in her presence.
It’s a Friday night, and there’s a sweet sort way that she curls into herself. She’s been his friend for just about a minute longer than he’s been in love with her, and he’d like to think he does a decent job at hiding this fact.
He landed on his hip today, from a height far enough off the ground that it still hurts, pain radiating from every step as he walks home. The commute is actually quite far from his internship at the newspaper, but he likes the area he lives, and the woman whose company he keeps while he lives there. He makes concessions.
Still, he’d been looking forward to the sight of her since the ache began. Her presence had a way of soothing.
She’s curled up onto an inherited recliner in their shared apartment, and when he bursts their creaky door open in a fluid motion, he’s greeted with this sight. She’s not alone- some friends from her graduate program on their Ikea couch.
It’s girls night, and it’s his dutiful role to say a quick quip and head back to his room. Her two best friends are over, legs splayed over each other in an open display of affection that he adores witnessing. He could hear the laughter and yelling from outside the apartment itself. He likes how they make her laugh, how they seem to make her heart lighter when he can tell she’s not able to carry the weight of everything by herself.
“Peter!” She’s the first to even notice he’s around, and he tries not to let the stubborn firework in his chest keep exploding at the thought of it. At the thought, she sees me. Her voice is warm and kind and weightless, and he drinks in  the sight of her. Their floor lamp illuminates her in warm golden light, a coupe glass with red wine held in delicate fingers.
“Hey, you,” he replies, an unmistakable warmth he can’t seem to rid himself of in his tone. He tries not to seem disappointed, like he’d not been imagining watching an irrelevant TV show, a little too close together until they’d fallen asleep just that way.
As he’s hanging his withered coat, he asks, “What are you guys up to tonight?”
Her friend explains that they are watching the Spy Kids trilogy in order, and she nods dutifully along.
“That sounds wonderful,” he can’t help but laugh. “I’ll leave you guys be-“
And it’s no surprise, when they send a him a chorus of please join, and you’re welcome to be here!
She stands up to give him a hug goodnight (because she wants to kill him), and he envelops her before he can stop himself. She smells like a mixture of lavender and rose and sweet red wine, and he’s grateful for his heightened senses for a moment; it doesn’t take long to memorize it all.
It occurs to him that he won’t see her until morning, and he takes in the sight of her again, eyes raking over her. She really is beautiful- lovely in a way that radiates her smile, follows her in action. His hands rest on the curve of her waist, and something and things being made to fit one another cross his mind, against his better judgement. God, he could spend forever looking at her, longer touching her.
He only pulls away when he hears a muffled pair of laughs, failed attempts at not interrupting a moment. Which is absurd, because there is no moment. None.
She beams at him despite the laughter of those she holds dear, and it aches saying goodbye to her. She's just down the hall and it hurts to leave.
He slinks off to his bedroom smelling like her perfume, blushing bright red and maybe, just maybe, the tiniest bit hopeful. And he thinks he might of heard the faint whisper of two other people, whispering questions he mulls over every day.
"Just roommates, huh?"

Hello! I just wanna say I really like your Disney Villain writings, they are funny and really cute! Can I request where the Disney villains are fighting over who is Y/N’s favorite villain? I thought it would be funny
Oooh great idea! This one was so much fun to write! (Can you tell that Honest John’s my favorite?)
No, I’m their favorite!!
————————————
No one knows how the conversation subject was brought up, but it more than ruined the villians weekly poker night. Curses filled the air and sidekicks where used as meat shields.
“I’m easily (Y/N)’s favorite person out of all of us, no- this entire park!! No one is better friends than Gaston!!” The Frenchman boasted, loose hair’s flying around his face. “They regularly compliment my physique, and they sneak me in special hair products!! There’s no room for argument!”
“Oh please frenchie, (Y/N) isn’t as daft as the other cast members. They have taste for more refined gentlemen. Like yours truly.” Captain Hook scoffed, ignoring the glares from the other villians. “Might I remind you how they gifted me the entire trilogy of ‘The History of Piracy’? Or how much they enjoy my culinary skills? They have supper with me every Tuesday.” Hook affirmed, more than confident he had bested the competition.
That was quickly interrupted by a swift *bonk* on Hooks head, Jafar looming over the ex- pirate with his staff in hand.
“While I agree with (Y/N)’s taste, it surely isn’t a cowardly captain.”
“Why you-” Hook started, only to be bonked on the head again.
“Why me? Well that’s easy, I’m a very persuasive individual. I’m able to… ‘charm’ those in upper management to give (Y/N) longer breaks, or keep any unsavory park guests from harassing our dear caretaker. (Y/N) obviously favors someone who makes their job easier.”
“Your joking right? Didn’t I see (Y/N) yell at you for 30 minutes straight because you were eyeing that princess Jasmine?” Hades chimes in, finally deciding to butt into the conversation after watching the other villians argue from the sidelines. Jafar stopped speaking, averting his eyes and mumbling.
“Yeah. That’s what I thought. But c’mon guys, you know it’s ya boy here who’s (Y/N)’s number one pal.” Hades points his thumbs towards himself.
“I was one of the first people here who (Y/N) met, we knew each from day uno. I can’t count the amount of times that they’ve kept my shit-ass sun god of a brother from bugging me. And they even made the most adorable altar for me, with pomegranates and the whole works!!”
“Oh, so gauche. If it wasn’t for my expertise (Y/N) wouldn’t be half as stylish as they are. Not to mention our ‘girls nights’. I’ve opened an entire new world of skincare for them!” Cruella hissed. (Actually remembering she had to pick up (Y/N) that special cream made from horseshoe crabs)
A threadbare glove raised amidst the crowd, Honest John appearing from seemingly nowhere
“Im sorry to disappoint you all, but it’s myself who’s won (Y/N) heart. They’ve fallen for my effortless charm lock, stock, and barrel! I mean, I’ve been their nap partner countless a times, they quite enjoy cozying up to my fur.” John preened, smiling back at the memories of warm afternoons snuggled up next to (Y/N).
“Fur!? Why you little- I’ll skin you-”
“Just wait till (Y/N)-”
The poker room devolved into full out brawl, nearby cast members rushing into the room in attempt to break up the crowd. All the while, in an empty back room (Y/N) was sharing a sandwich with their guest.
“Y’know what, Ratigan?” They said between bites. “Your my best friend.”
The rat stared up at them, finishing his bite,
“…. Ew.”

meet cute
luffy x reader, law x reader, kid x reader
a trilogy of short fics ft. the captain trio
what happens when a pirate takes the last pastry?
0.9k words
a/n: this bakery that i go to is always sold out by the time i go in the afternoon, so i went at 7am and finally got more than just leftovers and it was sooo worth it
Tumblr media
when monkey d. luffy meets you, he doesn't even see you at first because you're hidden behind the mountain of baked goods on his tray. sure, maybe he overdid it but they all looked too good to stop at one. and if anyone asks, he plans on having them all himself.
unless there's a good reason to, luffy doesn't share.
you start packing his order, the mountain slowly shrinking with each bun, as you sneak glances at the guy in the straw hat on the other side of the counter. he's cute and friendly, and you think this is the shortest amount of time it took for you to crush on a guy.
making small talk, you ask him about his day ("it's great now! there's so many options here!") and he asks you about your favourite pastry.
"oh, it's this one!" you point at the last bread on his tray, "but it's always sold out by the time i'm on lunch."
to which luffy frowns, thinking about how unfair it is that someone as nice and cute as you doesn't get to enjoy their favourite treat.
you take his coins, blushing when your fingers brush his, and thank him for coming by, wondering when you'll see him next.
it turns out that the answer is very soon.
because 10 minutes later, luffy comes flying into the shop, landing right next to you with a little laugh and your favourite pastry in his hand,
"here," he grins. "for you."
luffy doesn't mind sharing if it's for a good reason — and your wonderfully surprised smile is a pretty damn good reason.
Tumblr media
trafalgar law thinks to himself that if it wasn't bepo's birthday, he would've left the bakery ages ago. but now he stands here, surrounded by nothing but bread, and he realizes that unless he wants to skip lunch, he's gonna have to find something to eat.
what shitty luck.
he eyes the last tuna bun and grabs it, thinking about how this'll have to do, when someone knocks into his arm and the bun goes flying out of his hands.
he whirls around, ready to unleash his hangry fury, but his complaints die on his tongue when he discovers who bumped into him — a pretty, adorable thing.
"oh my god! i'm so sorry!" you yelp. "oh no, there's none left..."
you fuss over the empty display, but law's already forgotten about his fallen bun. you're far too cute, with a faint tinge of pink in your cheeks, for him to care about a pastry he wasn't going to enjoy.
"wait!" you rummage through your bag. "it's not a tuna bun but it's close?"
you offer him an onigiri, one with bits of grilled fish, and law can hardly believe that he's staring at his salvation.
his handsome face breaks into a wide smile and you can't help but do the same. your eyes are warm, a soft smile dancing on your lips, and there's a sugary sweet feeling in law's chest when you hand him the rice ball.
what wondrous luck.
he takes his favourite food from your hands and thinks that maybe — just maybe — bakeries aren't so bad.
Tumblr media
the only thing eustass kid is thinking about right now is how much he's going to enjoy eating this chocolate danish. he reaches into the display to grab the last one, but instead of a flaky pastry, his fingers find a soft hand.
"excuse me," you say. "i'm just trying to reach the danish."
kid gives you the onceover (pretty, he thinks). "ya should be excused. that's my danish."
you narrow your eyes at the boldness of this rude (albeit, hot) stranger. "says who?"
"says me."
"and who are you exactly?"
kid puffs his chest, "eustass kid."
you scrunch your nose and cross your arms, "you mean the boorish pirate who raided that south blue island?"
"i- boorish?" kid gapes incredulously.
"did i stutter?" you scoff. "you pirates are awful. the more good looking you are, the ruder you are."
you blush slightly at the admission, but kid's too riled up to even notice (though later, he'll remember it and grin).
"do you insult everyone that you meet?" he grits.
"i don't know, do you steal food from everyone that you meet?"
"listen," kid leans over you, catching a whiff of your shampoo (which just so happens to be his favourite scent). "i already said that the danish is mine."
unwilling to be intimidated, you jab a finger in his (extremely muscular) chest. "you damned pirates always take what you want - absolutely zero consideration for the rest of us."
"you're no angel either, sweetheart. generalizations don't look good on anyone — not even cute hotties like you."
your cheeks flush hot, "you-!"
"me, what? look who's stuttering now, huh?" he goads, getting even closer to your face now.
"you really-"
"mommy, look! i got the last one!"
both of you snap out of it just in time to see a little girl grab the pastry you were fighting over. dumbfounded, you look at kid and just when you're about to curse him out, he cuts you off.
"well, looks like neither of us get what we wanted," he says.
then, kid turns back towards you with a devilishly handsome grin, "but now i kinda want you, so how about i buy ya dinner instead?"
(spoiler: you say yes.)

THERE MUST BE MORE THAN BLOOD, ryn selene
tips
[full text below the cut]
brother, cross the threshold into my arms. / you took all my faith away. / my brother, the fallen angel. i, god weeping for eternity.
i remember you standing outside the doorway. shotgun slung over your shoulder, barefoot in gore.
the wind yelled: wrong creature wrong creature wrong creature.
a bone-deep sickness wrecked you, a gnawing unable to be satiated; a trilogy of sin burrows underneath our bloodline. do you trust this road to deliver you home safely? (something tells me you’ll be dead when you return.)
all the tombs inside of you have been pried open; you let something in that hands cannot grasp. but it holds you, it’s holding you.
one day you’ll be left with a terrifying plague like a belief in god.
i still struggle to answer the question lingering in my god’s eyes. it has nothing to do with fate, maybe it’s an ego thing.
reluctant to be my father, he’s only a companion, a ghost over my shoulder.
he overflows with forgiveness, but i can’t verbalize all i’m at fault for. i ache and ache and ache, still there’s an entire world who deserves him more.
i’ve spent so long in the desert trying to kill what i could not find. my god was here before me, he grows tired with my loneliness spreading like wildfire.
the ring of churchbells don’t sound way out here. no prayers to be uttered, no one to wound their memories over and over again for me. he stands at the mock altar all the same.
‘aren’t you tired? i know you don’t have anything left to fight with.’
i cannot pinpoint a spot in this desert where i can be saved. something out here still clings to me, memory becomes an open wound.

"Troy has Fallen!" by me
In the first scene of Aeschylus’s “Agamemnon” (the first play in the trilogy titled “ORESTEIA”) we see a nightguard on Agamemnon’s roof in Mycenea (the cursed HOUSE OF ATREUS) , waiting for a signal fire to announce that Troy has fallen. The play is begun with a sense of dread, as the guard, after having spotted the fire, alludes that some dark tidings have been happening within the house with Agamemnon’s wife, Clytemnestra.
So why do I have the brightest star in the night sky; “Sirius”; the dog star so prominent? As Peter Meineck mentions in his audio lectures, he talks about how Clytemnestra’s fire is a man-made star, a disruptive element in the natural order of the godly cosmos. So I wanted to show some contrast between the stars and signal fire. But there’s more.
Professor Meineck talks about how the Agamemnon play has ritualistic symbolism for the Greek summer New Year’s festivities in different parts of the play. First; the SKIRA festival was an all female New Year’s festival held in summer, and a watchman would be sent to the top of the acropolis in Athens, and upon seeing Sirius, the dogstar in the daylight, would announce it to the city, thus beginning the festivities with lighting of fires around the city. The other two ceremonies that will play out later in the play will be the bull sacrifice; BUPHONIA (which Agamemnon’s murder represents) and the ANTHESTERIA festival, where a new king takes over the throne from the old with a transfer of power (Clytemnestra usurping Agamemnon). Which I hope to dig into deeper later as we get to those sections in the play.
Have you read “Agamemnon?” what do you think about this play?

If We Make It Through December
Pairing: Joel Miller x fem!reader
Author's note: June write something that doesn't have religious imagery in it challenge
Summary: “I am yours. If I died in this moment, I am yours.” - James Joyce aka the first installment of the winter trilogy [1.9k]
Warnings: tlou winter, reader yells at Ellie, (probably) incorrect wound care (I'm a writer, not a doctor), discussions of Tess, bad coping mechanisms, intrusive thoughts, bargaining with god??, I think that's it
Tumblr media
"Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck." Ellie mutters as you check Joel's pulse. He's finally conscious again, which is good, but he either can't speak or won't. When Ellie applies pressure to the hole in his stomach, he grips her arm hard. Good to see he's got some strength left, you think as she winces but doesn't push him off. You look between the blood staining his shirt and his pale face as a million thoughts run through your head. "Is he gonna be okay?" Ellie asks, and her and Joel's eyes land on you. You take a shaky breath and look around the room for anything to help. Fabric, alcohol, even an extra pillow or mattress to elevate his feet to slow the bleeding, but find nothing.
"He's losing a lot of blood." You say, pulling Ellie's hands away from the bloody rag and replacing them with your own. Joel croaks your name, but you ignore him. "I need to stitch him up before he can lose any more. Check the bathrooms, kitchen, whatever. Bring me whatever you can find that looks like it could help."
"What if I can't find anything?" She asks. Joel repeats your name, his voice breaking over the sound when you put more pressure on his stomach. He groans in pain, and his fists ball up next to him, but you don't move. Neither does Ellie. "Is he gonna die?"
"I don't know, Ellie!" You yell harshly. She stumbles back at your sudden volume change but doesn't say anything. "Go!" You point up the stairs as you yell, and she scrambles out of the basement to raid the house for whatever she can find. When you turn back to Joel, he's staring at you with hazy eyes. You linger on them for a second before returning to his wound.
"You need to leave." He mumbles, and you shake your head.
"Shut the fuck up, Joel. I'm trying to think."
"Go North. Go back to Tommy. He'll take care of ya."
"Stop. I'm not having this conversation with you right now." You say, and he grabs your sleeve and hauls you to him with all the strength he has left.
"You take her and the gun, and you go. D'you hear me? Leave me here." He struggles, and his breathing gets shallower as he tries to maintain some semblance of control over the situation. You set your jaw as you stare at him.
"You are my partner," you say through gritted teeth. "You are my partner, and I'm not leaving you to die because I've already lost two partners. Two," you rip your hand away from him to put two fingers up. "And I'm not letting you be the third because you wanna pull this martyrdom bullshit. So, just shut the fuck up and let me work, or I will kill you myself, do you understand?" You both know you wouldn't, but he does as he's told and stays quiet as you internally panic.
You're too far from Jackson to get him there, and there's no way he'd survive that long in the cold. Any sign of civilization is miles in the opposite direction, and even then, you're responsible for the deaths of those hunters. All it took was one afternoon and a pack of fucking monkeys to get a bounty on your heads. He's bleeding too quickly, and the heat of it makes your head swim.
"I got something!" Ellie shouts as she runs down the stairs. "This is what I could find," she breathes hard as she hands you a sewing needle and thread. The black thread is old and fraying, and the needle has touched God knows what in the past twenty years. You pat down Joel's jacket pockets but find them devoid of the old lighter you watched him light fires with just a few days ago. It must've fallen out at the university.
"Fuck," you mutter. There's no way to sterilize the needle, but if you don't do something soon, he's going to die. You sigh and shake your head. Beggers can't be choosers. "Do you know how to do stitches?" You ask Ellie, making Joel's eyes widen. She blinks at you like she's not sure if you're talking to her before shaking her head. "Okay, then I need you to pay attention because I'm probably not gonna get another chance to show you."
You grab Joel's half-empty flask from his chest pocket, his place for all the things he tries to hide from you, and pour the alcohol over the stab. He yells in pain, and the veins in his neck bulge as he looks away from you and the threatening needle. Then, in one quick motion, you start a suture. The thread surprisingly holds, and you can encourage his skin back together. You mumble an encouragement to yourself and Ellie watches with bated breath as you weave in and out of the bloody mess with a precision that shocks even you. You use up what you can and manage to stitch the jagged cut together. The gushing of blood stops, and his breathing evens out. He's safe. Alive. Unconscious, but he's alive.
You let out a sigh of relief and tie off your sutures, quietly explaining the process to an attentive Ellie. "Were you able to find a first aid kit or bandages or anything?" You ask, and she shakes her head.
"Just some old towels." She says, pulling one from a stack you didn't see before and handing it to you. The floral print is faded and seen far better days, but it's the best you can do. Carefully, you replace the bloody cloth with the old tea towel in place of a bandage. You check his pulse and count his breaths before your body can even register the blood and sweat covering your clothes and skin.
"He's okay for now. We need to change the towel every couple of hours and watch out for any signs of his body rejecting the stitches. I might be able to find something to replace them with, but I don't know."
"Why would he reject the stitches?" She asks.
"Sewing thread and a needle from twenty years ago aren't exactly standard practice for stitches. Nothing about this was sterile, but I just needed the bleeding to stop."
"Have you done this before?"
"What? Stitches?" You ask, and she nods as you wipe your face with the back of your hand. "Yeah. They used to give me a run for my money, trying to keep them from dying from all their bumps and bruises. Luckily enough, we had a connection at the hospital in Boston. Kept floating me supplies to keep 'em out of the emergency room."
"Joel or Tess?" She clarifies, and her name feels like ice being poured down your back. You clear your throat and busy yourself with placing a blanket over Joel so she can't see the shine in your eyes. When will it get easier to talk about her?
"Both. Tess never liked doctors, but she'd let me help her sometimes. Even then, it was like trying to put lipstick on a pig. Wouldn't sit still," you say. "I'm gonna go wash up. Stay here with him." You pull yourself to your feet and walk up the stairs without a second look at Joel or Ellie.
You take a scoop of freshly fallen snow from the pile in the kitchen and find a bathroom just off the hallway leading to the dining room. You melt the snow between your palms to get a little water to scrub Joel's blood from your hands. It's everywhere. Under your fingernails, up your arms, even on your face, you realize when you look into the splintered mirror above the sink.
You want to go back to the campus, track down whatever hunters might be left, and break their jaws. You want them to hurt the way he's hurting. You want to trade ten of them for Joel. Their faces play on a loop in your mind as the dusty sink stains red. Over and over again, you get snow and scrub at your hands until your fingers are raw. You've learned that harsh hand washing after failing to protect someone is a habit from pre-med. Adam used to grab your hands before you could rip your palms open. Joel would turn off the water and wordlessly pull you away. But now Adam's dead, Joel is barely breathing, and you're alone.
You're alone. You're alone. You're alone. Why didn't you do anything to stop them? Why didn't you take the shiv instead of Joel? How could you be so stupid? This is the other shoe. This is the price of caring about him. This is the price you pay every single fucking time. Is Ellie next? Tommy? You're alone. You're alone. You'll always be alone.
The repetition is silenced only when you suddenly drive your fist into the already broken mirror. You rip down whatever is left on the bathroom walls before kicking the door open. Your vision blurs as you kick and punch and rip anything you can get close enough to. Debris flies past your head, but you don't flinch. You're tired of flinching. You're alone. Another hit and the wall rattles with force. They always die. Your knuckles sting. You're going to have to bury them both. You grab an old pillow and shove it in your face before screaming as much as you can.
You don't stop until your voice gives out and your hands shake. The room is a mess around you— holes in walls, glass on the floor, and a knocked-over bookshelf. You flex your hand around the pillow, and pain shoots through your arm. Not broken, you decide after a quick poke around. But definitely fucked up. You sigh and look around for the first time since dragging Joel through the abandoned home.
From the living room floor, the house looks so much bigger. Pictures of a once-known family smile down at you menacingly with their security and perfect, alive children. The books scattered around you range from financial self-help to Goodnight Moon and tell the story of a college-educated couple with enough money to be stupid with it. For a split second, you wonder what happened to them before deciding to reign that thought before it gets too far. Ellie needs you. You need to get back downstairs and pretend like everything's okay. You can't afford to waste any more time up here.
You shakily pull yourself up and turn to walk down to the basement when a wooden cross nailed to the wall stops you in your tracks. It's old like everything else in the house, but you can tell this was here even before Cordyceps. It could've been a family heirloom or a wedding present. It was loved. The people who hung it were loved, but you don't feel any love when you look at it. You walk to the wall until it's directly in front of you, and your aching fingers twitch to rip it down. You take a deep breath and look up at the ceiling, not exactly sure what you're doing or why.
"Don't you take him," you whisper. "Don't you fucking take him from me, do you understand? It's not his turn." You feel stupid talking to God or the ceiling or whatever, but you can't stop. "You either kill me first, or you leave him alone because I'm not doing this without him. After everything you've put me through, you owe me a fucking favor or two. It's not his time. Back off." After one last glare at the cross, you leave the destroyed living room with the feeling of eyes watching your every step.
I'm serious, you think. Not him. Not now. Not while I'm alive, you selfish piece of shit.

We are not judging how bad the movie is, we are judging which adapted the book the worst. There are good movies that are bad adaptions.
Propaganda below the cut (spoilers may apply)
Persuasion:
They massacred my girl!! That is not Anne Elliot!! The whole point is that she's beaten down and thinks she's missed her chance at happiness and is bullied by her family, not making mean and snarky nods to the camera :( They completely missed the whole point of the dynamic and it's SICKENING! They also cut Mrs Smith who is arguably one of the most important characters as she highlights Anne's lack of focus on title and rank and her family's comparative obsession with it + it's only through her that Anne learns about Mr Elliot's true nasty nature. Also they cut the 'I am half agony, half hope' line from Wentworth's letter at the end so what's even the POINT of adapting it if you don't have that!! Oh my god!! My poor favourite Austen novel :( (I do want to make it very very clear that my issues with the movie come from the writing and adaptation and not in any way from the race blind casting. The casting is superb and I'm genuinely so disappointed that they got such a bad adaptation bc so many of the cast are literally perfect)
Where do I even start? They tried to 'modernize' both the protagonist and the love story and managed to take out everything that made it good in the first place. Anne Elliot in the novel is quiet and good and helpful, full of regret. In the movie, she constantly turns to the audience to mock everyone around her, feeling so much better than everyone, to the point where nobody understands why Captain Wentworth would still be in love with her, or have fallen in love with her in the first place. Eight years before the plot starts, she broker her engagement to him because she was persuaded by a family friend that it was a bad idea. No way would movie!Anne have let herself be persuaded. They just tried to do a Fleabag/Emma type of thing without understanding what made either the novel or those two things work and thereby ruined it completely
Whoever made this didn't understand the point of the novel at all. They completely screwed up the character of Anne Elliot (the protagonist), which in turn screws the rest of the movie, as the original story only works because Anne is the way she is. Also, it's a period piece but the characters are talking in modern slang the entire time. And not in a clever way but in a very cringey one. If Jane Austen knew, she'd probably turn in her grave, and rightfully so.
Maximum Ride:
The storyline makes absolutely no sense, and the movie is nothing like the book. You could've given the movie an entirely different name and and keep the plot I wouldn't bat an eye
the movie's just bad mate
Horrendous low budget netflix movie with effects so bad they make me feel physically ill and acting so wooden the cast is in danger of being attacked by lumberjacks. The story already wasn't the best and the film somehow made it worst. I came in with nostalgia for my dear kids with bird wings and left never to be the same again.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children:
While Miss Peregrine was one of my favorite books as a kid and incredibly unique in the way the story is written (The author basically took a box of weird antique photographs and created an underlying story behind a handful of them) the movie is incredibly boring. Like seriously I can't remember a single goddamn thing about the movie besides my extreme disappointment with it after leaving the theatres. It's probably because the original is a trilogy but they didn't want to make it a trilogy for the movie so they just scrapped the ending of the first book and rewrote a shitty climax where they threw snowballs at the nightmare child eating creatures or something. I remember THAT scene perfectly because it was so, so dumb. It was so stupid oh my God- ALSO, thank God I have a copy of the book from before the film came out because new copies don't have one of the photographs that the actual book uses as a base anymore and instead have the shitty movie poster! We truly do live in a society.
Changed way too much so it doesn't feel like the same thing. The main characters are these kids with different abilities (called peculiarities) and the movie switches around their powers and changes almost everyone's age. Emma and Olive switch powers so that Emma now floats (they also added that she can kind of control air to some extent) when she's supposed to have fire powers to match her fiery personality. Olive can make fire now and she's also aged up from an eight year old to a teenager and put her in this weird romance with Enoch. Enoch is also aged up from a grumpy thirteen year old to around the same age as Olive. Bronwyn, one of the older kids in the book and sort of a motherly figure to the younger kids, is now one of the youngest kids. Hugh and Fiona are aged down and basically have no interaction at all in the movie, even when their book counterparts had such a good relationship. The only one they didn't really change was Horace and Jacob. They also added these gorgon twins that do like two things. The antagonist in the movie is Mr. Barron who honestly isn't super memorable and isn't in the books whatsoever. The ending of the movie is weird too because they manage to turn back time somehow so Jacob's grandfather isn't dead and then he hops through loops so he can be with Emma and the other peculiars. I guess the problem of wights and hollowgasts is magically eliminated and we do not have to deal with the consequences. It took six books to fix everything. I appreciate that the movie engaged me enough to read the series but once I did, I could not believe they did my kids that dirty.
Yikes where to start. The 3 girl characters are all mixed up. There are 2 teens, one who's super strong and has a brother (I'll get back to him) and one who controls fire and is the love interest named Emma. The third girl is a child called Olive who floats. She's lighter than air.
In the movie, strong girl is the child, olive is now the fire girl and is for some reason super introverted, and Emma the love interest floats and gets given a super breath??? Power?? Like she rises a sunken ship by blowing in and keeps a man blown against a wall by blowing air at him. He makes a remark that she'll run out of breath eventually, which happens here because plot convenience, but not when she's blowing in the sunken ship.
The enemies in the book are terrifying Hollows. Creatures who have lost themselves and devour souls of those with powers... The movie decides they eat eyes now. And turn human again. And get busted up in a fair for the final act of the movie. Ugh.
The movie also decides randomly that time travelling through the loops is a thing; a loop being a pocket of time that replays the same day over and over. But apparently this means Main Character can travel back in time and stop his grandfather dying??? What?? His grandfathers death is the whole start of the movie and motivation for the character.
The movie undermines many of things that made the book amazing and even decides it's not a trilogy anymore!! Fuck the other 2 books, right?!
Tldr; it is terribly hollywood-ised and t tim Burton ruined a franchise by trying too hard to make it quirky and fun when the books already had a brilliant sombre and interesting tone to them.

the way greed is a big theme in the grisha trilogy. we even have the quote "what is infinite? the universe and the greed of men." and how with the crows, as much as we joke about them doing it for the money, they aren't greedy. kaz goes on the ice court heist to seek revenge. inej goes on it for her freedom and those of others. matthias and nina were bound by honor for the most part. jesper may have needed the money but he isn't greedy for it. and same goes with wylan. but we can see how much greed indirectly influenced them to be in those positions.
as much as inej said that greed was kaz's god. it really isn't. he works for justice, for revenge. against whom? pekka rollins. the one who shows greed more than kaz ever will. pekka duped two young boys and countless many others out of their money, and some out of their lives. he did all the dirty work for the money. and kaz dedicated his life to avenging jordie and later making sure people like pekka don't do it to anyone else. and he goes on the heist for the money, not because of his greed, but to seek vengeance for what greed has done to this world.
the villain in inej's story is tante heleen. through inej, we see how people like tante heleen care about money more than anything else. she makes sure the girls in the menagerie never earn out of their indentures. she physically abuses the girls and then tells them she has to take from the money that they earn whenever there's blood on their bedsheets. and the second that kaz bought out inej to work under per haskell, tante heleen didn't even care and let inej go because she was given a sum. and she even taunts inej that she'll have her back because she knows she can earn from her. she's incredibly vain and greedy and i'm glad inej stole her diamond necklace in the ice court.
jesper's encounter with greed is probably the most common in ketterdam. people in ketterdam feed off of greed and all the dirty desires of the people. jesper's fallen into a lot of debt because of the casinos scattered all throughout ketterdam. and gambling houses are such a dirty means of profit but that's what ketterdam thrives off.
wylan, on the other hand, was disowned by van eck because of his dyslexia, because van eck didn't believe that wylan could properly carry on his legacy if he couldn't read. van eck goes to such severe means to build his empire, to earn as much as he can, as it is the religion of ketterdam. van eck ordered two people to kill wylan and drive him out to keep his reputation clean because if the merchant council only knew his dishonest ways, he would be kicked out and lose everything. he manipulates kaz into thinking he wants to save the world when he would gladly bring it to chaos if it meant he would have the power and the control. and his greedy and selfish ways are how he falls. and wylan helps bring him down.
nina and matthias are the most noble of them all. they went on the heist for both their people to be saved from the dangers parem could cause. but we can trace their place in the crows back to when they met. he was a druskelle and she was a grisha. a generations long prejudice, a war they've always had to face, because of the incredibly warped mindset of the fjerdans. as matthias says, what must it feel like to worship djel, knowing that he gave gifts to another? grisha power could be djel's hand and maybe the otkazat'sya were jealous and couldn't wrap it around their heads. and so with that came greed for control, greed for their god's favor to the point that they've missed what djel truly stood for. trying to justify all inherently evil actions they had to take when it all stemmed from envy and greed.
the greed of men is infinite, ancient, and common. i just find it intriguing how the crows are always described as criminals who will do whatever it takes for the right price but they are the farthest from greedy. they were shaped by greed, not their greed, but the greed that inhabits this world. and throughout the duology, we see how they all work against it in the end.

Heyy boo, do you have a book that is not star wars related that you wish you could read for the first time or reread all the time?
I am searching for books recommendations and I am pretty open about every genre, maybe not horror but everything else is totally fine.
My number one book recommendation that I will always obnoxiously shove in everyone’s faces is Lord of the Rings. It is my heart and soul and favorite thing in the world and if you’ve never read the trilogy I highly recommend it. But I also have quite a few other recs!
Anything written by Andy Weir. “The Martian” is his best known work, which they made the Matt Damon movie of,and while I do love it “Project Hail Mary” is my favorite of his and one of my favorite sci-fi books of all time.
I loved “To Sleep in a Sea of Stars” which was Christopher Paolini’s sci-fi debut a couple years ago but he just came out with its prequel “Fractal Noise” and I liked it even more.
For some good old fashioned space opera brilliance I recommend the “Final Architecture” trilogy by Adrian Tchaikovsky. The last book of the series just came out and I DEVOURED it. Tchaikovsky’s Children of Time,Ruin, and Memory are also phenomenal, you really just can’t go wrong with him.
For more space opera and politics I highly recommend Arkady Martine, she DEBUTED with “Memory Called Empire” which won all sorts of awards. The sequel also recently came out but I haven’t gotten the chance to read it.
I’m in the middle of reading Pierce Brown’s “Red Rising” saga, which I would describe as adult Hunger Games, and have thoroughly enjoying it as well!
For fantasy I love Samantha Shannon’s “Priory of the Orange Tree” and “A Day of Fallen Night”. You’ll get varying opinions of what to read first,I read Priory when it first came out so that’s my biased opinion.
I’m a massive fan of “She Who Became the Sun” by Shelly Parker-Chan and their sequel “He Who Drowned the World” and I want it to go on record I read SWBS when it first came out and before it blew up *flips hair*
R.J. Barker’s “Tide Child” trilogy is awesome, first book of that series is “The Bone Ships.” It’s high seas fantasy with dragon bone ships and epic war and amazing world building.
I always highly recommend “Gideon the Ninth” by Tamsyn Muir and now also the rest of the books in the series. I think the usual pitch is lesbian necromancers in space.
I cannot cannot recommend “The Shadow of the Gods” by John Gwynne enough! It’s quintessential epic fantasy told as a Norse epic and it’s in my top five of modern fantasy books.
While I have serious beef with Song of Achilles just like our fellow obikin Will,I did love and devour Madeline Miller’s “Circe.” In every way I think it’s her superior work.
I can’t recommend fantasy without recommending “The Grace of Kings” by Ken Liu. His entire series will blow your socks off,but the first book won nearly every award for fantasy books that have ever existed.
I’m a huge fan of R.F Kuang’s “The Poppy War” series although I’ve heard this one is a contentious recommendation. I think this series is hate or love it but if for whatever reason you don’t vibe with this series I also highly recommend Kuang’s “Babel.”
If you want something a little less well known I could chew through drywall over Simon Jimenez’s “The Spear Cuts Through Water.” It was in my top five of 2023 release books.
I can also make a separate rec list of less new books and overall classics I always recommend or gift to people, both fiction and nonfiction!
