I don't understand how anyone can be intimidated by Arthur. Like what exactly are you going to do with those beautiful blue eyes, baby boy? Make me kiss you?

Glimmers of the past week 🍰🥂🌿✨

“Did you know about glimmers?
Glimmer is the opposite of a trigger. Like a micro moment that makes you happier, a little moment of awe, something that makes you feel hope. Once you start looking for them and embracing them, your life feels so much sweeter.”

Do other writers ever get this like, hyper-specific dialogue exchange drop into their brains and you know exactly where these character are standing and what they’re doing and how they’re saying these words but that’s all you get. You don’t have much other context and this specific moment that exists only at this time in your headspace??

one day, when arthur grabs a fistful of merlin's shirt, the fabric rips with a sharp sound and they both freeze, like any additional movement would somehow be the thing to confirm what had just happened. it's really not that big of a deal, it's only a small hole, an easy fix, but arthur looks like he's been betrayed and merlin looks about as offended as one can get in such a situation.
before he knows it, words start spilling from merlin's mouth accompanied by huffs and sighs, something along the lines of "well, that's just great" and "why'd you do that anyways" and "you do this all the time you know, and i really don't get why, you could just tell me where to go or to move quicker". and arthur doesn't say anything, just blinks, but merlin rambles on and on. suddenly, it's not just about the shirt anymore, it's about the shoves and the pulls at his arm or waist, the face touches. it's clear as day once it hits him, how it's all unnecessary and kind of just what arthur does, how the sheer amount of such touches has only grown over the years, even with merlin understanding better and better what arthur wants and when.
arthur doesn't give in, doesn't confirm or deny, so merlin makes it his mission to tease every time it happens again. he knows that if he does it enough, teasing will turn into provoking and arthur will have no choice but to retaliate. merlin's like a kid at the fair, aiming for a prize and he's set his eyes on a proper hug. baby steps.

Do you ever think of how, to Arthur, Merlin is a clumsy, idiot of a servant with no care for tradition, but he makes Arthur laugh and gives the best advice and somehow, without Arthur even noticing, has become his best friend in the entire world, the person he wants to face every battle with, not only so he can protect Merlin but also so he can have Merlin’s support and approval
And then it turns out that Merlin doesn’t need protecting, and he’s the most powerful sorcerer to exist, he has magic, and has actually been the one protecting Arthur this entire time
And Arthur has to face their entire relationship being turned upside down, because okay you have magic, he’s had his suspicions about magic not being evil for a while now and of course Merlin isn’t evil, but it’s more how dare you not tell me, after I’ve came to you for everything and I thought you did too, I thought I noticed when things were wrong and put a smile on your face but this whole time you’ve not trusted me
And in a matter of hours he has to relearn their entire friendship and try to understand why Merlin has done this and why he keeps doing this and make sure that everything else about our friendship is true please say the rest was true
And by the end, because he is dying and the end is so very near, it doesn’t matter anymore because he is Arthur and he is Merlin and it doesn’t matter that they’re also the Once and Future King of Camelot and Emrys the Most Powerful Sorcerer Ever to Live
No, they’re just Merlin and Arthur in their last few minutes together and they both know it and this is his last chance so it’s not you betrayed me and I need time and how could do this to us, instead it’s it’s okay and hold me and thank you because if this is his last chance to protect Merlin then of course he is going to take it, that’s always been his job and neither death nor magic is going to change that

it is rotten work. but i love you purposely and ardently, so i’ll do it anyway. it’s rotten work because i don’t like to see you hurt. so stain these hands, i can wash them clean. i will wash them clean so you can stain them again. tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow. because i chose to love you. rotten parts and all.

the point is that arthur starts out as very potentially similar to uther even though there is already kindness in his heart, and then develops to grow further and further away from him, while morgana starts out as very potentially different from uther even though there is already ruthlessness in her heart, and then develops to grow more and more like him. in this essay i will –

Okay but what if I snap and write a full-fledged fic of Arthur becoming king in s1 and how it could have changed the entire course of the show.

Merlin: Arthur? He doesn't even like me
Arthur, who gave Merlin his mother's seal, which isn't a proposal because you're supposed to give it to your spouse at the wedding: where the hell is my f*cking husband?!?!

something i will never move on from is how merlin changed since season one. how he became a shadow of a shadow, the remains of a dream, the silent echo of who he once was.
he killed himself to become Himself, and in the end it was for nothing.
in the end, there was blood and silence.
merlin held arthur's body in his arms and thought that maybe, in that field, in front of that lake, there might had been two corpses.

we fuckin hate Uther in this house but those times he'd look at Merlin and be like "wtf is wrong with Arthur rn??" were so funny
like Uther was very firmly on the you're too close to this boy train but the moment Arthur was doing something weird he'd look at Merlin like "boy fix this rn"
