re: my seemingly fringe "I don't think we're meant to think Odin was a dreadful cunt" take, when was Thor 1 actually made? Like... 2010/2011? Because I think Odin is (presumably based on comics canon) meant to be "a bit distant but overall good as a parent" but 2010ish is well after the recent (historically recent, by which I mean since maybe the 1980s) shift in our culture's ideas about fatherhood and what make "a good dad" as well as similarly radical shifts in how we approach disciplining children. MCU!Odin is therefore odd because he's a couple of generations out if he's meant to convince the audience that he's A Good Dad or even an acceptable one. Even the people making the film can't have (all) thought he was any good so with this in mind I'm more open to the idea that Odin is meant to be fairly shit. (But not entirely, and certainly not to the point of him being evil - he's doing his best and arguably the issue isn't him but the culture they've all been born into.)

IDK how old the writer was but there could be an intentional generation-gap thing going on there? An "everyone thinks this is acceptable and even good parenting, but it isn't and everyone involved is getting messed up by it." You don't have to go that far back historically before failing to show regular affection to your kids wouldn't be seen as a significant flaw in a father (whereas it absolutely would be in a mother - v interesting that as the status of women in our society has increased our idea of a good dad has shifted significantly towards an ideal that would previously have been considered "maternal" and thus "unmanly." Oh hey, looks like patriarchy is bad for men too!)

I still think a lot of fanon and fanfic overstates it (which is fine until we're at the point of inventing obviously abusive behaviour and then seemingly forgetting that we made that up), and that Odin is at least meant to be 'doing his best' but yeah Them Thor Films must surely be aware that his best is nowhere near Actually Good, yeah? I mean unless they were written by a man who lives in the 1950s, which they probably weren't. (There is absolutely some generational variation in how far the social change has taken hold but you'd have to look for a long time before you'd find a man of any age who'd say "I really wish my father had been more reserved and had spent less quality time with me" rather than wistfully expressing the opposite of that.)

#mcu tag i guess #that said as recently discussed frigga's characterisation (such as it is) is also quite out-of-date and thus a bit weird #every single thing we know about her comes back to her being a mother to More Important Characters #and nobody seems to have considered this a flaw in the content that they made #anyway i got to this point by realising that there's a now conspicuous lack of childcare professionals in 90s Star Trek so well done me #(most childcare falls to Wife and if Wife is not available then Man may do some in an emergency. but if neither Wife nor Man is available #the alternative is “a friend who isn't working that day” rather than the excellent daycare facilities that don't exist on Deep Space Nine)#generation gap stuff can be fascinating - like how many Boomers will insist that their own parents weren't fucked up by WW2 in any way #“oh but my dad wasn't at all affected by his experiences during the war - i know this because he never talked about any of it”#whereas to my generation that silence on what exactly happened in those years is conspicuous and an obvious sign of trauma #and that sort of thing #thor movies

current Star Wars has this interesting problem of feeling both overly connected (everything has to be intertwined, you need to know all the things that have ever happened) and extremely disconnected (we have never heard of major [character/event/institution] in our lives), which gets even weirder when it’s happening in the same book/show/movie/comic. like Mando relying so heavily on cameos but also essentially pretending 99% of the events and characters of TCW and Rebels don’t exist, even when they’re relevant. and especially with past retcons (*cough* Caleb and Depa in TBB *cough*) it makes it hard to take a good faith read on anything: like, are you not acknowledging previous media because you’re about to retcon it? is it just not actually relevant to the story you’re telling? are the creators unaware of previous thing? oh wait but you’ve made the plot of this episode dependent viewer knowing something absolutely critical about previous thing --

it’s just REALLY disorienting.

current Marvel has a similar but not identical problem, and I do genuinely think Marvel’s better at handling it than Star Wars, having been in both fandoms. (if nothing else, I respect that MCU writers/directors will just flat out say they haven’t seen previous installments or that they decided not to go XYZ route that was set up six movies back. obviously that is not ideal, but hey, at least they’re honest about it.) Marvel is conceptually smaller than Star Wars, which I think really, really helps; they’re working on a smaller scale, where Star Wars is very, very spread out. (except when it’s not, which takes us back to the original problem.) the MCU also has the benefit of not working over multiple media; yes, there are the prequel comics to a lot of the films, but they don’t actually expect most viewers to read them; every time the MCU relies on viewers having read the comics (not the tie-in comics, the actual Marvel comics) it does some weird stuff to the film/show. I know people talk about the MCUification of Star Wars and I disagree with that pretty strongly, but I’m not quite sure how to articulate it.

#I think the thing people forget about the mcu in 2023 is that MARVEL DID THE WORK #that's what gets me every time I do a phase 1 rewatch #(and if you haven't done one recently I recommend doing one)#you can't speedrun that #everyone wants to speedrun it but you can't speedrun that #though that's a slightly different thing even than the other stuff #hell marvel tries to speedrun it in phase 4 and you just...cannot #but they've also got other stuff going on #it's fascinating on a technical level #bedlam watches star wars #bedlam watches the mcu

It had been about two weeks since you found Kang at the crash site. Despite the moment you two had when you first fixed him up, you two had very little interactions since then. It made sense though. Both of you were taking your own separate times to heal, you in your room, bedridden from your horrible headaches, him on the couch, still unable to walk due to his foot and abdomen. According to Janet, he hasn’t been very talkative. He would occasionally respond to her comments about how he was feeling, but wouldn’t say anything about where he came from or why he was here. So she just stopped asking. It took a while for you to open up to Janet about how you got here at first as well though, so you understood why he would be all shut up about it. It got you thinking about how you ended up here. How much you left behind. God you wish you got the chance to leave a note or something. At the very least, for them…

You quickly dragged yourself out of that thought, knowing the path it would lead you down led to nothing but wasted tears. It was late at night, and you laid sleepless in your bed, so it was easy to let your mind wander. To distract yourself, you replayed the moment with him in your mind. You were a little touch starved, in that way at least, so feeling Kang’s hand in that sensitive of an area drove you mad. Thinking about it would always give you the same reaction. Butterflies slowly fluttering into your stomach, roses blooming onto your cheeks, and the near uncontrollable urge to touch yourself. You know your relationship was non existent right now and had a horrible start, but sometimes you wondered what would happen if you walked over to the couch right now and started to kiss him. Also partially because you would get to see him, awake or not. To be honest, you preferred him asleep. You crept into the hallway, adjusting your eyes from the dim light in your room to the rest of the house, enveloped in the darkness. Thankfully, you knew the layout of the house well, so you doubted you would trip over anything. You wandered throughout the cabin until you got past Janet’s room and into the kitchen. You didn’t realize how flawed your plan was, it just now clicking that you wouldn’t be able to see Kang in the darkness. You didn’t entirely mind though. Just knowing he’s in the same room as you put your thoughts slightly at ease.

You finally make it to the counter and put your arms out to find something. They land on a round, spiked fruit. Too scared of accidentally cutting yourself if you use a knife to peel it, you decide just to bite into it. Juice drips down from your mouth as your teeth sink into the fruit. Although the food here was no where near as good as back home, you managed to find a few gems here. The fruits were definitely one of them. Once you finish with the fruit, you use the sleeve of your loose shirt to wipe your mouth. You paced the room a bit, still kind of restless. Your eyes still haven’t entirely adjusted to the dark, but you think you have a pretty good standing of your ground. That is until you trip over the back of the couch. You brace yourself for the impact of flying over the couch and waking up everyone in the process, until you’re suddenly stopped.

It’s a hand. No, not just a hand. The hand. His hand.

Again, it stays there longer than it should have. Placed just below where your sternum meets your breasts. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? brb hitting the hurt no comfort tag and figuring out what the 'worst' one was… you know what, it was we'll be a fine line (Top Gun, roosmav) - still one of my fave fics tbh, it covers the time between the first movie and where we pick up with Rooster being PISSED at Mav for pulling his papers

OR hell, if i ever could stomach to edit it, i think elbow deep (The Walking Dead, cegan) would count for this - it's almost finished i swear, just need to walk away from it after every paragraph rn

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? for who? i'd say 'till the end of the line where Bucky finally leaves Steve because they're just incompatible after all that time and trauma

All time favorite ship? this is unfair - it absolutely depends on the brainrot at any give time. if you're asking me RIGHT NOW it's cegan, no question but like…. three months ago? who knows

What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? too many to count - there's a few i think about occasionally as like a nice memory of things that could have been but the thing I WISH i would get to finish is my RP with @sparklingbinjuice which i still hope we fall back into sometimes (but both of our attention is elsewhere at the moment)

Thoughts on dialogue in another language? i used to be like FUCK IT WE SPEAK RUSSIAN but i cringe when i look back on those times (and have flashbacks to writing Japanese into Gundam Wing fic in highschool) which is to say, to each their own but if i can't speak it fluently or have a friend who does who can edit, i try not to include it in my own work

First fandom you wrote in? technically it was a sweet little Luke/OC insert from Star Wars circa, ohhhhh uh, early 90s but the first fandom i fell into a spiral about is going to be Gundam Wing FOR SURE (gimme that 1x5 please and thank you, strawberries are so sweet you know?)

Favorite fic you've written? this is also unfair - it's the unnamed one in my head that i rant to Abby about while i'm drunk at 4am thanks

four months since the multiversal chaos. all it took was a few minutes to make everything go back to normal, as peter thought of it, but nothing was normal since.

he lost.

the one time spider-man didn’t fight, instead trying to heal all the bad guys he’d thought would die without his help, he lost the most important people in his life. he lost may, ned, mj and you.

he lost his own identity, now no one knew him as peter parker. he was just another face in the crowd and sometimes peter thought it all was for the better— everything was better now— but other times, he missed the days he used to go on those little walks with you. he missed them more than anything. you both had bonded over the evenings where you went on and on about your day, making silly jokes to get a little laugh out of the brunette, and he’d do the same.

what he wouldn’t do to have that again with you. now it felt like all peter could do was catch a glimpse of you whenever he was on a patrol, passing by your old apartment or your favourite coffee shop where you two used to sit for hours, completing your homeworks.

you were recently packing your stuff because you were finally going to move to a dorm at your uni. you couldn’t believe you got into the college of your dreams and even though it was a bit far from your friends, ned, harry and mj, it was still worth it.

peter had finished his patrol for the day and was sitting on a rooftop across your apartment with his favourite delmar’s sandwich in his hands. he watched down through your open window— not in a creepy way, he just liked watching the skyline from this roof, as the two of you did when things were normal— as you shuffled through your wardrobe.

you were searching for any more stuff to pack around your room when your eyes fell on a red, velvety corner of what you could only assume to be a jewellery box, except that when you pulled it out it looked way bigger for a jewellery box.

it appeared dusty, as if it hadn’t been touched in several weeks, or even months. four months.

you brushed your fingers over the 3-digit combination lock that was protecting the contents inside it and for some reason the numbers 108 danced before your eyes. it was someone’s birth date but you couldn’t really recall whose.

on the inside of the lid was a sticky note, inscribed on which were the words, “for when you miss me.” your brows furrowed as you plucked the piece of paper and examined it. whom was this note even refering to, you wondered.

the next thing you noticed were the two tickets to a star wars movie. you picked them up after placing the note down over your carpet, the material of the pink coloured receipt sparking a memory in your brain but it was too blurry.

“okay, my eyes are closed.” you smiled, holding out your hands as he sat beside you. the two of you had taken another trip down to the park in the evening. the weather was cloudy and you hadn’t brought an umbrella but he wanted to show you something special so you just sat on the bench and did as he said.

you sighed, not being able to recall who he was.

there was some shuffling as the brunette pulled out something from his pocket, holding it right it front of your eyes, “you can open ‘em now!” you could practically hear the grin in his voice.

“oh my god...” you mumbled, discarding the tickets right beside the note from earlier before going back to shuffling through the contents of the box until your hand wrapped around a weird device covered in webs

“come on, cheer up, (y/n)!” peter nudged your side as the two of you entered the huge opera hall behind the rest of your classmates.

“i don’t see a reason to cheer up, pete. it’s gonna be four hours of opera tonight, and we just missed the coolest carnival for it all!”

that night, peter had told you to stay in for the opera show as you saw your classmates sit beside each other in the, almost empty, theatre. you obviously hadn’t listened as you followed him outside through the exit.

not to your surprise, just a few minutes later you were witnessing a fight between a weird lava monster and peter, who was now dressed in a suit nothing akin to his original one. this one was black. you remembered betty had called for his help, refering to him as ‘night monkey’.

the piece of metal in your hands was a remnant of that fight in prague. those webs belonged to peter.

“peter..” you mumbled the name. it rolled off your tongue so easily, like you were used to saying it.

unbeknownst to you, peter had travelled down the roof of the opposite building as soon as he saw you pull out the box full of memories. his senses went into an overdrive as he heard his name pass your lips through the partly open window and all he wanted to do was reach out.

but he waited and watched you pull out a letter from the box. the envelope was torn from the sides and it looked like it had been read ages ago before being stored but it had just been four months.

“you’re going to forget me.” he mumbled.

“that’s not a possibility.” you chuckled, assuring him as the two of you looked at the stars above. peter had brought you to his favourite spot after a dinner date at your house– going out was not a preference after mysterio revealed his identity– and the topic had somehow rose, “i do think, however that you could forget me, now that you’re famous.”

you heard him chuckle at your comment, turning to look at the brunette and noticed his eyes were already on you. both of you leaned into a soft kiss, your hand caressing peter’s cheek as his lips moulded against yours.

peter was the first to break the kiss, taking a deep breath, “how about i write you a letter just in case you forgot me.”

“how about i do the same.”

you hadn’t even noticed that you were crying till you felt the tears fall onto the back of your hand. peter’s heart ached watching you wipe the tears off your face but he wasn’t sure what to do. he watched you place the letter back into the box and place the lid to enclose the contents, losing all hope that you could ever remember him.

but the next second, you picked up your phone and dialled a number. and peter recieved a call.

you had remembered his phone number.

I just realized something... Is DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE the first R-rated Disney film to be released as... A Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures movie?

And NOT as a... 20th Century Studios, Searchlight, Touchstone, or Hollywood release?

Marvel Studios movies never open with a Disney Pictures logo, nor does such a logo appear in trailers/promo materials for those movies. The only mention of Disney as the movie's distributor, ever, is in the credits. Particularly the title card saying "Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures". You know, when the movies aren't making references to Disney movies/theme parks. (i.e. "I'm Mary Poppins, y'all!")

THE AVENGERS and IRON MAN 3 were the first Disney-distributed Marvel movies, both of which opened with Paramount and Marvel Studios logos per a contractual agreement. Paramount had been distributing the MCU movies - sans 2008's THE INCREDIBLE HULK - up until the switchover. Disney bought Marvel in 2009, and distribution was out of Paramount's hands shortly thereafter, but for whatever reason, they retained their logo on those two films specifically. I guess this was because AVENGERS and IRON MAN 3 were already in development before the Disney buyout, IRON MAN 2 was already being filmed with a third one expected. THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER had yet to be released. They both debuted in mid-2011, and sequels weren't announced until after they came out. A second THOR and a second CAPTAIN AMERICA movie were Disney greenlights. Starting with THOR's sequel - THOR: THE DARK WORLD - in fall 2013, the movies would open with the Marvel Studios logo only.

That'll likely be the case with DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE, though I wouldn't put it past the movie to - in an irreverent sense - have a Disney castle logo at the beginning. Deadpool narrating "Yeah, this is Disney and it's rated R! Buckle up, kids!" They already made similar jokes in that recently-released trailer.

It's really weird to think that Disney can't do R-rated "Disney" movies.

Other studios/companies don't have that problem. Universal, Warner Bros., Paramount, etc. It's all part of the collection for them. With Universal, the Minions can co-exist with Michael Myers. In Paramount-land, Dora the Explorer can share the space with Ghostface. For Disney, it was always through alternate names like Touchstone and Hollywood Pictures, or through whole-ass studios like 20th Century Studios, Searchlight, and Miramax.

Nowadays, Hulu is essentially merged with Disney+, and Disney+ houses plenty of R-rated things. That is, of course, if you are using an adult profile. But even in the theme parks, like for example - The Great Movie Ride, that had a whole section devoted to ALIEN. And that was before Disney bought 20th Century Studios and the ALIEN franchise. And Disney films have referenced R-rated things, before. It's kinda weird, really... Disney... A person's SURNAME, associated with strictly family-friendly stuff.

After Disney created the Touchstone Pictures banner in 1984, it seemed unlikely that they would ever do a PG-13 movie. They stuck with G and PG, and some of those PG movies had a special Walt Disney Pictures logo at the start of them, too. A black background with blue serif text... No castle. But then lo and behold, in 2003, they released PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL... Since then, not counting Marvel and Star Wars movies, they've released 14 more - many of which being PIRATES sequels or theme park adaptations - in addition to a filmed HAMILTON performance on Disney+.

So... It kinda begs the question... Could Disney possibly just go all-in for the first time... and release an R-rated movie?

The MPAA rating system was created in 1968. Disney in 1968 were already concerned with being family-friendly. Proudly so. That shift began to take place back when Disneyland was opening in the mid-1950s, when Walt Disney was transforming the enterprise's image. What was once the trailblazing, sometimes edgy studio was now a family entertainment company. A show on TV every Sunday, a theme park for kids of all ages, and movies that played to mothers. (To Walt's estimation: Mothers took their families to movies, and also told their friends, and their friends told their friends-) It was to the point where Walt himself was frustrated. When he had seen TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, he stated he wished he could've overseen a movie like that...

So, Disney stayed in the family-friendly corner after Walt's passing in 1966 and after the creation of the rating system two years later. The 1970s was a period of auteur-driven films, challenging pictures that upended the status quo, brought heavy topics and themes to the table, shocked audiences even... Disney was mostly making movies like THE BAREFOOT EXECUTIVE and GUS. All G-rated affairs, and following tried and true formulas. Interestingly, when preparing the 1950 classic TREASURE ISLAND for re-release in 1975, Disney weren't too pleased when the picture received a PG rating for its violence... So, they recut it to get a G rating. That's how it ran in 1975 in theaters, and interestingly that was the only version that was available on video until 1992.

It took Disney over a decade to make a PG movie of their own (THE BLACK HOLE in 1979, not counting their distribution of the independent movie TAKE DOWN earlier that year), back when the rating actually meant what it meant. After being launched in 1984, Touchstone was largely meant for PG-13 and R-rated affairs, with the occasional PG movie here and there. For every SPLASH and DICK TRACY, there was a BLACK CAULDRON or HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS. So it was kinda on-and-off there, it depended on the content and tone of the movies, I suppose.

Then it took Disney 19 years to make a PG-13 "Disney movie"...

I guess for an R-rated "Disney movie" to work... Tweak the Disney logo so that it doesn't appear all family-friendly in that distinctive font? Don't have the logo appear anywhere on promo materials? Come up with a Touchstone-esque name for Disney movies that get the R-rating? What the hell would you call that anyways, haha. Can it even be feasibly done without unsuspecting parents taking their kids to see it?

If it ever happens, it'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

I respond to most of them, or at least try to. I think it’s important to building a community, which is what I hope I encourage. Also as a way to show that yes, I did read it and yes, commenting does matter.

6) What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

What If…Loki Lost His Love?

I don’t do major character death or angst in general. It’s just not what I’m looking for in fics, but I actually think I did a good job on this one.

7) What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Most of them? They’re basically all one-shots with happy conclusions. I think if my recent stuff, probably I Want It All.

8) Do you get hate on fics?

I did get one “kill yourself” message a few years ago, but it was just one person on anon. The reception to basically all of my fics have been positive.

9) Do you write smut? If so, what kinds?

I’ve written some smut. I’ve done a couple of Kinktobers and some for Clone Wars. I think the best way I can describe the way I write smut is “sensual”? And it’s a little rougher. Idk, somebody better versed than me could describe it better.

I did have a few of my Poe Dameron fics stolen a few years back, but I messaged them and they quickly deleted the fic. That all being said, if anybody notices my works being stolen or copied, please let me know.

My sister and I have talked about it, but no.

Ineffable Husbands

Dialogue, characterization and emotions. At least that’s what people have told me.

17) What are your writing weaknesses?

Prose. I’m still working on getting more creative with my descriptions. I could also really get better at scene setting in general.

18) Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I’m not against it, but use it wisely.

If you want to reader to understand what is being said, write it out in the language of the fic. This isn’t a movie. Putting a translation at the bottom of the chapter or in the middle of the sentence makes it sloppy. Instead type out “they said in X language, “___”.

However if you want a character to hear something being said in a different language and they don’t understand it, then type it out of you want.

20) Favorite fic you've written?

1. How many works do you have on Ao3? ~155. Approximate count because some are podfics of my work back when it was the convention to make the writer also an author. And I have some stuff posted in an anonymous collection which I don't think get counted in works despite counting into other stats.

2. What's your total Ao3 word count? 487,897. I will hopefully be cracking half a million this year!

3. What fandoms do you write for? Currently Batman, Star Wars, Foundation, Shadowhunters, Lord of the Rings, whatever random thing catches my attention.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Double Blind [Daredevil/MCU] Exit Strategy [Batman] Surveillance [Batman] Extension [Batman] Victory Braid [Lord of the Rings]

5. Do you respond to comments? Very sporadically. Mostly for comments where there was something specific I wanted to respond to or comments from someone who prompted/inspired the fic. I feel a bit bad that I don't because I love all comments but it's a lot of energy for me that I could instead be putting into more writing.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Probably Everything I Build (Is Breaking Down).

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I'm a sucker for a happy ending so there's a lot to choose from! Maybe Rearrange.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Not a lot, but people have left some truly unhinged stuff on Exit Strategy. I delete/block where needed.

9. Do you write smut? I'm not good at it. There might be like 3 sentences and a fade to black.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you have written? I write a lot of fusion AUs but not many crossovers. There's probably some weird ones in my older stuff!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Full reposting, not that I know of. I did find that someone basically rewrote one of my fics, with extremely specific details, and that didn't feel great.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes, many of my fics have been translated :)

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? A lot of my fics are based on prompts so kind of collaborative in that way, but the actual words on the page writing bit is pretty solitary for me.

14. What's your all time favorite ship? X-Wing. Iconic.

15. What is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Still pained by my Les Mis Olympics AU WIP.

16. What are your writing strengths? I think I do a fun mix of humor and angst in my writing. Maybe word selection, I am obsessed with finding the best word with the most appropriate connotations. And perseverance, I will finish fics years later.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Extreme slowness. All vibes, no plot. Cannot write fic longer than 15k.

18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics? I think generally I prefer to write in English and dialogue tag that someone said something in a different language. Occasionally I do the italics to indicate or don't do italics but use Google Translate which inevitably goes poorly. This reminds me that someone sent me a translation fix comment and I need to go see if I can find that.

19. First fandom you wrote for? Yeah, it was probably Harry Potter. I recently found an old spiral notebook where like 14 year old me wrote in colored markers and it is the worst thing ever, I should burn it, but on the other hand it reminds me that I'm kind of proud that I've kept at writing so long and improved.

20. Favorite fic you have written? I think Misson Report. I have an enduring love for Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon and I like the cadence of it.

Can I ask why you're still reblogging Marvel stuff over here when you've been very vocal about the boycott on tiktok? I'm not judging, just confused

As I said in the most recent video about what the BDS is actually asking us to do, when it comes to pressure boycotts it’s about showing the company that people who oppose this genocide still want this product so they have an incentive to actually change business practices. On tiktok I have almost 20k followers on here I have about 100. I’m nothing but an advertisement on tiktok because of my platform and the nature of the app. I have no platform here but also the culture of tumblr doesn’t make me reblogging a comic cover an endorsement of the product. Also like the divide between fandom bullshit and politic posts on tumblr is nothing. A lot of us have a set it and forget mindset when it comes to boycotts but like this is a pressure boycott we need to talk about it. I’m not buying comics anymore but I’m still writing letters to marvel comics asking them about their stance in this genocide. Obviously they’re not answering them, but it feels like doing something. I think the best thing to do in this time is to pirate marvel content, comics movies tv shows etc. well really the best thing to do is switch to indie comics but I don’t have any money to buy them lmao. I do believe that marvel comics has been used to tell important political stories in the past, Jack Kirby did not kill nazis for us to write his work and legacy off as pure bigotry, and I believe they can be radical again. We’ve got to talk about the way the mcu has twister and contorted the comic characters to fit into their war propaganda. I don’t think literary analysis and critical thought are limited to writing argumentative essays, I think fandom can be a way to analyze media. It rarely does but it can.

I’ve chosen to not talk about marvel at all until Sabra is removed from Captain America 4 but I know others are talking about back issues and things out of print and actively encouraging pirating, showing that there are ways to engage with these politics presented by the comics without giving marvel your money. A lot of people are replacing Starbucks and McDonalds with other brands or at home recipes and that’s what I consider fanfic and pirating right now. Look at Star Trek, fans can save an entire franchise. Look at the sequel rewrites in Star Wars after bigoted fan backlash, we can also change franchises too. If we work collectively and scream loud enough, maybe we can change marvel for the better. I don’t think the solution in this time is to stop being a fan because Disney and Marvel will always exist, this is why the BDS has called for a pressure boycott on Disney not a no buy boycott, but it’s time to use the collective fan community to demand change.

It is not "Superhero Fatigue"

Okay, let me quick rant about something that is bugging me a lot lately. There is a lot of talk about "Superhero Fatigue" going around for years now, but especially this year with both DCU movies not breaking 300k at the international box office and even with Marvel the only movie that actually did really well was Guardians of the Galaxy, aka the movie that is the least "superhero" out of all the Marvel movies.

Buuuuuut... Honestly I do not think it is Superhero Fatigue. I think it is "Franchise Fatigue".

Let me explain.

First of all let me say: I am not really a fan of the MCU. There are some movies in there near and dear to my heart (like the Guardians movies), but all in all I am too much of an anarchist to like those movies. Meanwhile DC has put out some of my favorite stuff of the last few years... But also those absolute duds like The Flash lol

But I do not think it is superheroes. Because... The Superhero movies were not the only ones that underperformed in the box office. The new Transformers movie underperformed, so did Indiana Jones and the new Mission Impossible.

In general studios have so often recently staggered to understand, why one certain movie did good and another did bad.

And I think part of it is just... Franchise fatigue. I think a lot of people are just not interested in the bajillionth sequel to some franchise. People are ready and willing to watch some new movies. I mean, while the Barbie movie was attached to an existing IP, it was not a franchise movie and it did phenomanally well.

See, the issue in recent times is, that the studios are a) all chasing the MCU, trying to make their own MCU, without understanding what made the MCU work (tbh, I doubt by now that even Marvel understands this), and b) think the only way to make money is existing IPs.

But here is the thing. A lot of those existing IPs started off as original movies. Not even ones based on something else. Star Wars, Indiana Jones or even the Fast & Furious movies were once original IPs, that someone took a shot with.

But as things are going right now, there is just not gonna be another Star Wars, Indiana Jones or Fast & Furious, because the studios do not want to invest into new ideas. They do not want to invest in something risky. Or rather into something that in their mind is risky.

So, instead they invest into those existing franchises, not even caring when those movies stop making back their money (at the box office, that is).

To me, there is a reason, why I am watching a lot of Indie movies lately. Because those movies might at times only have a budget of 30 million - but they do original shit. And god, I am here for it

What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

It's either didn't want us to burn out, which was canon timeline Chengxuan, or come back and haunt me, which was canon timeline Sangyu. I think I'll go with the latter. It had more tragedy about identity and memory, I think

(There's also one Hamlet fic I'm proud of, but that was a one-off I wrote. You can go find it if you want)

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Oh boy, uhhhhhhh. Out of the stuff currently associated with me, it'll be one of the Chengning fics, I think, or my aro!Wei Wuxian Ningxian fic. Not gonna lie it's slim pickings for happy endings around here haha

Do you get hate on fics?

No, thank god. I was always too much of a small fic writer for that.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Hahaha, not really. I'll do handwavey and fade to black but that's about it. Might get there one day though!

Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Nope, not a crossover person unfortunately unless you want to count the sins on my old laptop from my superwholock era (I don't)

Ehhhhh..... as of recently, ideas yes but actual written fics, not that I'm aware of

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! A couple of my MDZS fics and one MCU fic back in the day got translated into Russian

Bestie I live in multishipper hell you can't make me decide

What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

Basically every DMBJ wip at this point in time, but particularly the one I'm furthest along on that I do not have a working title for other than 'horrible huaxie backstory'. My relationship with DMBJ has changed a LOT since getting into it this year and now my hyperfixation is somewhere else, so who knows what'll happen *shrugs*

What are your writing strengths?

I've been told my narration has a distinctive voice to it, and I think that's what people tend to compliment most? Dialogue is also something I've tried to consciously work on over the years, and I don't know that it stands out as a strength necessarily but it's almost something I find easy to write these days if I'm in the swing of it

What are your writing weaknesses?

Action and smut. Basically don't make me mentally choreograph complex stuff

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Now that my Mandarin has improved after two years of study, I think writing bilingual fic could be fun. There's definitely dialogue I've thought up in Mandarin for C-Drama characters that just won't have the same impact in English, and it's a shame I can't just casually drop it into a fic untranslated and be done with it

First fandom you wrote for?

First fics I ever wrote were for Star Wars and they were written longhand into a horrid little hipster notebook from Indigo. The first fics I posted on Ao3 were for the MCU though

Favorite fic you've written?

Nah I'm not choosing on this, I have no idea <3
