1. A and B have a routine of meeting at each other's lockers between periods, and they've both started looking forward to it as the best part of their day. But the flutter in their chest when they see the other wave at them across the hall can't be love, right?

2. A is in the theatre club working on the set for the fall play after school, and B sometimes comes along with them to help out. A appreciates the extra hands, but doesn't appreciate how flustered they seem to get for no reason when they work side by side and B brushes against their arm.

3. After going to prom as friends, A and B's friend group are crashing at a house for the night. The rest of the group has gone to change and go to bed, and as the two sit out in the backyard together under the stars, B suddenly realizes they wouldn't want to be there with anyone else.

4. After not seeing each other for a few years, A and B reunite at a local Cafe when they're both home for the holidays. A is thrilled to discover they didn't lose any of the comfort in their friendship, but also wow, B got hot during college, huh.

Let Me Paint You

“Let me paint you.”

Those words shook something in Arthur at his very core. He had heard those words before, long ago.

Back then, he had just moved to a new country where he barely knew the language, and all his classmates avoided him like the plague. Except for one boy. He was around the same age as Arthur, with sunkissed skin, curly brown hair, and the brightest green eyes Arthur had ever seen. The kind of green that coloured the grass on a warm summer’s day. It reminded Arthur of his old home in the English countryside.

“Let me paint you,” the green-eyed boy had said. Normally, Arthur would not have accepted such a proposition from a complete stranger. But at that moment, Arthur was at rock bottom, and this boy had such a kind gaze, he couldn’t bear to say no. 

“O-Okay.”

From that day forth Arthur had become this boy’s “muse.” Almost every lunch period during their middle and high school years was spent in the art room or courtyard. Though it was a little nerve-wracking to be looked at with such adoration and intensity, the boy made sure to make him comfortable, carrying on all kinds of conversations with Arthur as he painted. The boy wanted to become a painter when he was older, and given his work, Arthur was sure the boy could be a very successful one. 

Arthur had never been confident in his appearance: far too scrawny, far too freckly, and hair far too wild and untamable. But this artist boy liked it all, and it showed through his paintings. For once, Arthur felt beautiful. What he saw as undesirable stared back at him, painted with so much love. It made his heart flutter. 

Through these paint meetups, they had become very close friends, spending all the time they could together. That was until the end of high school when Arthur was given the opportunity to return to England for university. And he had taken it, much to the artist boy’s dismay.

“You said we’d go to school together…” The boy had choked out when Arthur told him the news.

“I know, but…I didn’t exactly want to come here in the first place.”

“B-But I thought you grew to like it?” The pain on the boy’s face was like a knife in Arthur’s heart, but he couldn’t back down. 

“Yes, but…England was and always will be my home. I’m sorry. I’ll come to visit though. I promise.”

“Don’t bother,” the boy whispered tightly. 

“Wait…What do you–”

But the boy had already left, and Arthur never saw him again. 

Until now…

Those same grassy green eyes were staring back at him with just as much kindness and love as they did the day Arthur first met them. 

“Afonso…” Arthur breathed.

“I always knew you’d be a bestselling author,” Afonso said with a warm smile. He placed Arthur’s latest book down in front of him. But the book signing didn’t matter anymore. Afonso was here, looking at him as if they never had that falling out, acting so smooth and charming like always. Arthur swallowed hard, pushing back the urge to just jump at him and never let him go again. 

“Hey,” Afonso called, pulling Arthur out of his head, “I know there is a lot to be said, but I don’t want to hold up your event–”

“You could never,” Arthur blurted out. “Wh-What I mean is…I just…You could never be a bother…a-and I wouldn’t mind the hold up if it was you.”

Afonso gave him a blank stare before bursting out into laughter. Arthur felt his cheeks flush. “Who knew you could be so smooth Kirkland,” Afonso said between giggles. “But in all seriousness. I’ll find you after the event. I have a lot to say to you.”

“Okay. But on one condition.”

“What?”

Arthur gave him a lopsided grin. “You paint me.”

It was Afonso’s turn to flush a dark crimson. “Deal,” he murmured, a small smile spreading across his face.
