Description: Self-Explanatory

Word Count: 2.2k

1. Her Tolerance

“Good morning Draco,” Cecily chirped as she passed him, Crabbe, Goyle and Pansy. Draco didn’t answer, but she didn’t expect him to. Instead he rolled his eyes, pretending to ignore her.

“I love your eyeliner Pansy, you need to tell me your secret,” she added.

“I’d rather choke,” Pansy deadpanned. Cecily didn’t seem to mind it. In fact it was almost like she hadn’t heard her. She simply waved at them and continued on her way to her class.

“I don’t understand why you don’t just hex her already Dray,” Pansy said with a roll of her eyes. He simply shook his head.

“If she wasn’t such a teacher’s pet, I would,” he retorted. It was a lie, though, he secretly loved it when she talked to him. Her happy nature was a breath of fresh air for him. After dealing with such stuffy Slytherins all day, he began to look forward to her greetings. He would never tell his friends that though.

Draco sat in his seat for Potions, avoiding Cecily’s polite smile at him. They were just taking notes today, so all they needed were their textbooks, parchment, quill and ink. As Draco rummaged through his bag, he felt his eyes widen. Where was his textbook? He knew that he was Snape’s favorite, but even the Potions professor had his limits. Snape would kill him if-

“Would you like to share a textbook? I don’t mind,” Cecily offered in a gentle voice. Draco’s head snapped to her. He was about to say no, but he saw Snape watching him out of the corner of his eyes. So, he nodded and swallowed.

Cecily gave him another smile and opened her textbook to the correct page, beginning to write. He could only watch her for a minute before Snape cleared his throat, urging him to start on his notes before he called him out.

After class, Draco was the first one out, but he ended up just stopping just around the corner to wait for his friends. He heard a familiar voice get closer to him.

“I just don’t understand why you’re always trying to be nice to Malfoy. He’s so mean to everyone except Slytherins,” Mallorie asked as she and Cecily walked down the hall. He frowned as he listened, crossing his arms and leaning against the wall.

“Well, because I believe there’s good in everybody’s heart. He just needs someone persistent to get through to him. I believe he could be a good guy if he would just drop his father’s ancient morals,” Cecily responded as they passed the hallway that Draco was in. Thankfully neither of them noticed him, because if they did they’d see him blushing. She believed he had good in him? Truly, he never met anyone like her. And maybe that was a good thing.

2. Her kindness

Draco watched in amusement as Crabbe and Goyle shoved Neville Longbottom to the floor, making him drop all his books and parchments. With a fist bump, the two walked away to find Draco. The three were just about to walk away when Draco noticed a flash of bright hair in the crowd of people.

“Are you okay Neville?” Cecily asked worriedly. He watched Neville nod and take her hand when she offered it. A weird feeling set in his stomach when he saw their hands still connected when he stood. Without another word, she crouched down and began picking up his things, Neville followed in suit. Draco heard Crabbe call his name, but he didn’t pay any mind.

“Thanks again Cecily. I’ll see you around,” Neville spoke, now in a much happier mood. Cecily waved to him as he walked away then continued her walk to class.

“Hello Draco,” she greeted with a smile as she passed him.

“Hey,” he answered without thinking. Cecily paused in her steps as they both realized what he said. She turned and gave him a bright smile before continuing on her way. Draco had the smile he had from Crabbe and Goyle’s mischief as they walked to class.

Draco heard small laughter. Where was it coming from? And so close to curfew? He rounded the corner of the corridor and paused. It was Cecily, but when he looked closer to her, he noticed something off. Her face now contained a duck’s beak and she was quacking at a first year Slytherin he recognized as Sierra Labelle. He watched her face turn back to normal and she now had a smile.

“There’s that pretty smile. Now, what makes you think being in Slytherin is bad?” She asked gently, leaning against the wall. Sierra wiped her face, a frown settling on her face now.

“B-Because all the mean people are i-in Slytherin. I’m scared that I’ll turn mean.” Draco’s heart broke at the terror in her voice.

“Sierra,” Cecily started soothingly. “Slytherin isn’t defined by the people in it. You weren’t chosen because you have bad in you. The Sorting Hat placed you in Slytherin because you’re ambitious, cunning, achievement-oriented and you’re a born leader. No one is bad, it’s just sometimes, people do bad things. And I believe with all my heart that you will make a wonderful Slytherin student and be good because you know you’re a good person,” she explained passionately. Draco saw Sierra smile before she hugged Cecily with all her might. He didn’t even realize he had started smiling until his cheeks started to hurt.

“You should probably get back to your common room, it’s getting late. And if you’re ever feeling down, just come find me,” Cecily instructed as Sierra stood. The girl grabbed her things and began running towards the dungeon, calling a thank you to Cecily. Cecily watched until the girl was out of sight before beginning to gather her things.

“I meant what I said you know, Draco,” she spoke as she stood, not facing him. Draco stepped out of the shadows and walked over to her.

“That was very nice, what you did for Sierra. She hasn’t talked to anyone since the sorting ceremony,” he explained, putting his hands in his pockets.

“Oh, she does talk,” she informed, finally looking at him again. “She just doesn’t talk to Slytherins. She’s scared, and no offense, but you guys don’t make it any easier to talk to.” Draco was surprised at her words, but that was only because she said it so bluntly he almost didn’t understand it under her sweet tone.

“I guess we don’t,” he admitted gently, pleasantly surprising both of them. Cecily shrugged and faced him fully.

“Maybe you should try to work on your welcoming skills. Goodnight Draco,” she spoke, making her way to the dungeons.

“Hey wait up,” he called, jogging after her. She stopped and shot him a confused glance.

“Would you like some company back to your common room?” He asked. Cecily gave him a kind smile and nodded. With that, they continued walking.

3. Her humor

Draco received yet another letter from his father saying that he needed to be better if he wanted to make it in the real world. His shoulder slumped when he read it. He’d been working so hard, but apparently that wasn’t enough for his father. He said a quick goodbye to his friends before making his way up to the astronomy tower, where he usually went to cry it out.

It was empty thankfully, considering classes were over. He was allowed to be alone without bother. So, he started crying out his frustrations and stress, letting them out into the air. He pulled his knees to his chest and stared out the window while he cried. He had no idea how long he’d been there or when someone else walked in until he heard a familiar kind voice cut in.

“Why was the wizard sneezing all week?” Cecily asked as she made her way over to him. Draco’s head lifted with a sniff and he gazed at her in confusion.

“What?” Was all he could say. If it were anyone else, he’d clean himself up or tell the person to go away (or both). But for some reason, since it was only Cecily, he didn't feel the need to.

“Why was the wizard sneezing all week?” She repeated, sitting down and smoothing out her skirt. He watched her for a second, still feeling confused. But he figured it wouldn’t hurt to answer her.

“Why?” He asked. He almost smiled when a mischievous glint appeared in her eyes.

“Because he took too much Flu Powder!” She exclaimed with a laugh. Draco was surprised, but couldn’t stop himself from laughing.

“That was stupid,” he responded simply.

“Yeah, but it got you to smile. I’d say that it was pretty successful,” Cecily pointed out.

“Very sneaky,” Draco joked in response. “Maybe you should have been in Slytherin.” Cecily shook her head with a patient grin.

“I’m happy where I am,” she spoke, and Draco had a feeling she was talking about more than just her house.

“Hey Draco,” Cecily called as she walked over to the Slytherin table at breakfast. Draco glanced at her as she reached his side.

“Yes Cecily?” He asked, greatly surprising his friends. That same mischievous glint sparkled in her eyes again.

“What happens when you accidentally swallow the silver coin in a Christmas pudding?” Draco hummed thoughtfully and shrugged.

“What happens?” He asked, curious to see where today’s joke went.

“You’ll feel a bit sickle!” She exclaimed while beaming. Draco looked down and tried to hide his smile.

“That one was even worse, you know?” He pointed out.

“Yeah, but it got you to smile. I’d say that it was pretty successful,” Cecily countered, using the same words she did every time now. “Well, you guys have a great day, it’s beautiful out so I hope to see you outside,” she looked around at them before stealing a piece of bacon from Draco’s plate. He shook his head as he watched her wave and walk away.

“What the hell was that, Draco?” Pansy asked, leaning forward. Draco’s smile disappeared and he looked at her.

“What does it matter to you?” He snapped, making her shut up very quickly. He sighed and went back to his food, trying not to look back at the Hufflepuff table.

4. Her Protectiveness

“Hey ferret boy,” someone mocked Draco as he passed by them. Draco stopped in his tracks at the name, trying not to blush in embarrassment. The rest of the guy’s friend group snickered at him. He started to turn and face them, but someone beat him to the punch.

“That wasn’t very nice to say Jacob,” Cecily spoke from somewhere in the friend group. Draco turned around and watched her push through a few people to stand in front of the boy he now knew as Jacob.

“It’s what he deserves. He’s always awful to everyone,” Jacob defended, gazing down at her with crossed arms.

“I don’t care, two wrongs never make a right,” Cecily countered defiantly. “If you say mean things to him or anyone else, you’re no better than him.”

“And what are you going to do about it Cecily?” Jacob mocked. They had a small stare-down while everyone else watched, interested.

“Nothing,” Cecily spoke. “Because I was raised to be proper. You, however, were dragged through the dirt during childhood.” The crowd erupted in ‘ooh’s as Cecily spun around and walked towards Draco.

“Let’s go Draco,” she instructed, grabbing his arm and continuing to walk down the corridor.

“You didn’t have to do that Cecily,” Draco said when they stopped in an empty hallway.

“I know I didn’t. But I don’t think it’s right for people to be so rude, even if you have been mean to them in the past,” she mumbled, letting go of his arm. He felt suddenly embarrassed by his past bullying and looked down.

“So, are you hungry? I heard they’re serving Italian food in the Great Hall tonight.” Draco smiled at her suggestion and nodded. And off they went to the Great Hall side by side.

“Did you guys hear about Draco crying in the boy’s bathroom?” Cecily and Draco heard a group of girls say behind them, making Cecily pause.

“Merlin, seriously? How embarrassing for him,” another girl spoke before the four of them giggled.

“I’ll have you know,” Cecily started, turning around despite Draco telling her that it was okay. “That there is nothing wrong with crying sometimes. It’s a wonderful way to let out emotions. Don’t push your toxic views of masculinity on him just because he rejected your date proposal.” The girls’ mouths dropped open. Draco had to hold back a snort while he watched the girls scurry away whispering to themselves.

“Protective as ever, I see,” he teased as she turned to him.

“Do you want to talk about it?” She asked sweetly, making Draco’s smile fade.

“Not really, if that’s okay,” he responded hesitantly. He sighed in relief then smiled as she continued walking.

“Okay. Want to hear a joke?” Draco laughed as he followed beside her.

“Sure, why not?”

The two of them stopped bickering for now, but it was only a matter of time before they started again. They’d been fighting their entire lives, and she was sure they would never stop.

No, seriously. They didn’t remember this, but their parents had told them that the first time they met, when James had just been born and Mallory was a few months old, she had taken one look at his face and immediately started crying. James always said that the reason she’d started crying was because she knew in that moment that she would never be better than him, but Mallory knew that the real reason was because he was so ugly.

Not that the girls (and some guys) in their grade would agree with her, though. James had always been very popular and the subject of a number of adolescent crushes throughout the years. She had never understood where any of them were coming from. Yeah, sure, he was sort of attractive in a conventional way. He had messy dark hair, plus quite the masculine jawline for a 13-year-old, but the freckles on his face still gave him a soft look. He had inherited his mum’s pretty brown eyes, his eyebrows were pretty much perfectly sculpted, and even Mallory had to admit that she was jealous of his long eyelashes.

But.

His nose was crooked from that time he broke it about four years ago (that may or may not have been her fault), and there was the fact that he was shorter than her and half of the girls in their grade. But most importantly, he was the most annoying person she had ever met. She couldn’t understand how those admirers of his could stare at him for so long without rolling their eyes.

No, she was convinced that the reason he was so popular was not because he was actually attractive, but a blend of heteronormative conventions of male beauty and the fact that he was The Chosen One’s son.

The worst part of all this was that James was 100% aware of the attention he got, and it had massively inflated his ego, which made him even more annoying. That was the reason why Mallory had made it her life’s mission to deflate that ego.

I love Mallory's thesis statement manner of describing James. She literally said: He is ugly. The words and expressions that can be used to describe him are: soft, pretty, perfectly sculpted. He's her school project. (read: she'd like for him to be one) What I love about this is that they chose to dislike each other, if that makes sense? Her being a Malfoy and him being a Potter had nothing to do with it. It's like Romeo and Juliette reversed, at least in the beginning. Oh? Mallory? Your life mission is to deflate James' ego? I thought you were going to be a Magizoologist?
