Hey Happy Valentine’s!

I just wanted to draw a short comic about what its been like for me dating as a trans man. (Obviously this isn’t “What its like dating for EVERY trans man”. This is what its been like for me and not for anyone else. This is not a broad generalization of the community, but a broad generalization of what I’ve been through personally. I am also bisexual, which plays a small factor in my dating life).

I didn’t include some stuff I would have liked in the comic, but I’ll mention it here instead. Another thing that makes it hard for me to date is that I’m still healing from a lot of past trauma from former relationships, and it makes it incredibly hard for me to trust anyone with both my body and my heart.

I can’t remember the last time I had a crush on someone, thats how much I’ve blocked myself off from having romantic feelings for anyone. Its rough inside this head of mine hahah.

This is before I started passing, but I was starting to become friends with another trans person, a trans lesbian. And before I passed, I was still pretty feminine looking, and I didn’t try hard to deepen my voice. I really wanted to be her friend, she was cool, we were hanging out a lot. One day, we were by our cars outside my work and were being goofy together when she said “You know, I’m a lesbian, but I’d make an exception for you.” And it was a strike through my heart. I knew why she said that. If she saw me now, if we had become friends after I started T, she wouldn’t have even thought about whether or not we could be a couple. But I was pre-T, and we got along, and despite being trans herself, she didn’t see a man in front of her. I had just wanted to be her friend. I stopped talking to her shortly after that.

All of this to say, I fuckin LOVE Valentine’s Day. I can’t get enough of it. I love the hearts and the candy and all the cute stuffed animals that get wheeled into stores and I love all the letters and little cards. I turned Valentine’s Day into a day where I just let all my friends know how much I love them. Who knows, maybe I’ll spend it with someone down the line, but for now my friends have to put up with me throwing glitter in their faces.
