Color My World - Haldir (LOTR)

Pairing: Haldir x soulmate!reader

The forest of Lothlorien loomed before a weary band of travelers, known to some as the Fellowship. Their steps were heavy with exhaustion, a mantle of grief weighing them down. Their companion, the wizard Gandalf, had fallen mere hours before. But they didn’t have time to stop, to allow their hearts a moment to heal. The orcs would come and the group needed to be safely within the depths of the forest before they did.

You walked beside Frodo in the middle of the group, your eyes darting between taking in the beauty around you and keeping an eye on your companions. Sunlight filtered through the leafy canopy above you, bathing the world in golden rays. Even the bark of the trees glittered faintly with hints of gold. You could only imagine how stunning it would be if you had already met your soulmate. All the muted, faded colors you saw would be bright and vivid. You never wished for it more than at moments like this.

“Can you feel the trees watching us?” Frodo’s voice, barely above a murmur, broke the fragile silence.

You placed a hand on his shoulder in comfort. “There have been eyes on us since we stepped foot in the forest, little hobbit.”

He looked up in surprise and you squeezed gently as you gave him a soft smile. “No worries. All be fine.”

“Thank you for being here,” he said, his tone hovering between gratitude and fear.

“We all have our purposes in this life, Frodo Baggins. Mine is make sure you complete yours.”

As you continued, you ignored Gimli’s talk of elven sorceresses and enchantments. You were too focused on the force gathering along the edges of your senses. The elves had sent a welcoming party. Of a sort.

Suddenly and almost silently, the Fellowship was surrounded. Elves with arrows drawn in you and your companions faces. With an arched brow you stepped in front of Frodo and pushed the arrow aside that was nearly brushing your nose. Ridiculous. Arrows did much more damage if they had a little room to move.

“The dwarf breathes so loud, we could have shot him in the dark,” a rich voice said as the most beautiful man you’d ever seen addressed Aragorn. The elf observed your group, taking each of you in. When his gaze met your own, he lingered ever so slightly before turning back to the king. “Why do you enter the woods of the Lady of Light?”

The quiet words stoked something deep inside you, a yearning that had followed you your whole life. A cascade of vibrant color burst forth with the marchwarden at its center. Greens deepened into a multitude of shades. The golden undertones of the trees shimmered with new life.

As he and Aragorn spoke, every syllable from his lips only brought more beauty to your world. And every word bound your soul more tightly to his. You wove your fingers together, a poor effort at self-restraint as you couldn’t seem to tear your gaze from his profile. You’d heard so many stories of this elf and now, seeing him in person, he was everything you could ever desire in a mate. And he was far too important for someone like you. Finally, you tore your eyes away as he turned to lead the Fellowship deeper into the trees.

You weren’t certain how far you walked or how many stairs you climbed before you were greeted by the ethereal presence of Celeborn and Galadriel. You half listened to the conversation about the fate of your wizard as your attention kept flicking over to Haldir who stood to the side looking straight ahead. It felt odd that you were so connected to him and he didn’t even know you existed. That he knew nothing of your bond. It was for the best, you knew that, but it didn’t make your heart hurt any less.

Feeling eyes on you, you turned your head to find Galadriel looking at you though she spoke to the Fellowship as a whole. You bit back a gasp as you heard her lyrical voice in your head. “Within these woods, bonds deeper than the roots of the mallorn trees are forged. You have felt the stirring of such a bond, child of the outside world. Your connection with Haldir is stronger than you know. An intertwining of souls, a sharing of strengths. Together, you harbor magic that will aid you on your quest.”

“Magic?” you thought back.

Rather than answering, the corner of her lips curled into a knowing smile and she gave you a small nod. “When you need it the most, it will be there,” she said aloud. Your companions frowned in confusion but you ignored their questions as Haldir showed all of you to where you would be spending the evening.  

You managed to leave the elves without Haldir finding out who you were to him. Your friends found it odd that you refused to speak louder than a whisper until you were well on your way down the river but you simply waved off their questions. It was better this way. No matter how utterly alone you suddenly felt.

Days turned into weeks. Frodo and Sam had gone off on their own. Boromir had fallen. Gandalf had returned. And now you stood with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli at Helm’s Deep alongside an army made up mostly of old men and boys. Hope was fleeting that most of you would make it through the night. Gandalf had told you to look for him at the dawn but that was many hours away.

You stood on the wall watching a storm roll in while the others prepared themselves for battle. You’d taken care of that hours ago. A horn blasting drew your attention. Elven archers marched toward the keep. You grinned, feeling hope for the first time in days. The smile fell as you saw who was leading them. Haldir. He wasn’t supposed to be here. It was too dangerous. He was supposed to be safe in Lothlorien.

You watched Aragorn greet him, Legolas by his side. Haldir glanced up when they finished, his gaze finding yours. He studied your face for a moment before nodding a greeting. You nodded in return then slipped away into the crowd, making sure the rabble were as prepared as possible for the coming attack.

While Aragorn moved through the ranks of elves on the wall, you stood with Legolas and Gimli. The hordes of orcs and Uruk-hai approached, banging weapons on the ground as they came. You rested a hand on the dwarf’s shoulder trying to calm him as he bounced around. “Steady on,” you told him as you prepared your bow.

And then they came in a flood of anger and teeth. Chaos reigned around you as you slashed and dodged. Rain fell in heavy drops as lightning flashed in the sky and thunder roared. You focused solely on the opponents around you until King Theoden called for a retreat to the inner walls. Aragorn grabbed your arm and pulled you along as he yelled for the men to fall back. When he turned and yelled Haldir’s name, you turned with him.

Haldir acknowledged the order a breath before he was surrounded by iron and hate. A blade stabbed toward him even as he cut the wielder down.

Heat surged through your veins as fear swamped you. You unleashed your fury with a cry torn from the very depths of your soul. The world seemed to slow as a shimmering shield surrounded your soulmate, deflecting the blade that would have run him through. His eyes found yours, wide with astonishment.

You ignored Aragorn calling your name as newfound strength flowed through you. You weaved through the melee, each step bringing you closer to Haldir’s side. Finally, you reached him and helped dispatch the orcs that swarmed him. When there was an opening for you to move, you grabbed the breastplate of his armor and pulled him toward the stairs. “Move, Marchwarden.”

The battle was over after a last minute save from the Rohirrim and the Ents. As soon as you had a moment to breathe a breath you weren’t convinced would be your last, Haldir grabbed your hand and pulled you to the side where you could have some semblance of privacy.

His hands cradled your face as his thumbs traced your cheeks. He looked you over with wonder.

“Why did you say nothing when first we met?” he asked. “Why keep your connection to me hidden?”

You grasped his wrists in your hands. “If the bond was complete, formed on both sides, what would happen to you if I died on this quest?”

The silence stretched as he studied you. “A partial truth at best, hiril vuin.” (my lady)

You sighed and looked away from him, unable to meet his eye as you confessed. “I did not wish to be a burden upon you. I feared the revelation would be a disappointment.”

He ran his thumbs along your skin again to bring your attention back to him. “You are the furthest cry from a disappointment. Your courage, your strength, your heart…they are gifts more precious than the rarest jewels of my people.”

You searched for any signs of deception from him. Finding none, a smile crossed your face. He mirrored it before leaning forward to press his lips to yours. It took only a moment before you returned the gesture with equal fervor.

For a moment, you could forget about your quest.  Forget about the death that surrounded you. Because here in the midst of so many endings, was your beginning and you intended to hold onto it with all of your heart.

Fic Recs: "Didn't see that one coming" edition...

I've been wanting to start collecting my all time favorite stories in ages but never knew where to start, there are just too many talented souls out there. A lazy day of re-reading favorites makes me want to finally give it a try though.

Featuring today: stories that defy my usual hunting patterns but still became all time favourites against all odds. Stories leaving me utterly gobsmacked thinking "That was so, soo awsome... but how on earth did I end up in this fandom / character / trope tag of all places?".

@messy-insomniac-bookgirl Let's be honest: this writer is the spirit animal of this specific selection. Never heard of the fandom? Dislike the protagonist with a passion? Doesn't matter: she writes it, I devour and love it. The reason? Dense and hugely rewarding story-telling, perfect pacing, side characters you want to adopt on the spot, delicious slow burns with sooo much yearning. And, most importantly, the awesome female OCs. I am in love with each and every one of them, regardless who they share a screen with. It's almost impossible to select just one story for this list but let's go for "Keep Calm and Buckle Up" (AO3) for suddenly making me feel things when Steve Rogers entered the stage in "Infinity War". Steve Rogers x OFC, James "Bucky" Barnes x OFC, Steve x Bucky x OFC. Action, slow burn, emotional roller coaster rides. Rated E.

@batsingotham "Written in the stars" (AO3) I don't do Soul Mate AUs. I don't do Robert Pattinson characters. For me the best things about "The Batman" were Andy Serkis' Alfred and 3 hours of Niravana in a loop. But the undisputed goddess queen of slow burn domestic fluff overruled all of that. Bruce Wayne/Reader. Soulmate AU. Dorks in love. Bruce needs a hug and Alfred has the patience of a saint. Rated M.

"Sweet Conversations" by @glassgulls Lord of the Rings has been living in my head rent free ever since I was a teenager but I simply don't do Elves. Period. Yes, Glorfindel is very cool and Lee Pace's Thranduil is an absolute vision (the costumes, the voice and the make up, mind you, don't get me started on any other aspect of the Hobbit movies though...) but otherwise? Thanks but no thanks. Nevertheless: the award for best fictional kiss I’ve come across in ages goes to this gem. Amazing scene setting and character work for something so short. Leaves you weak-kneed and high as a kite on serotonin for the rest of the day. Haldir/Reader. One-shot. Rated M.

„Ownership of Mine“ by @amywritesthings . Okay, lets be honest, peeps: Prison settings for a romance story? Seriously? Who in their right mind would be able to think about romance and seduction when all of your freedom is taken away, you are crammed into a small and dark space with people of questionable character and put under constant surveilance. Well… apparently I can… with this story. Even if that tag is a big red NO GO sign for me otherwise. Amazingly dense story telling and atmosphere building in just 3 short chapters. Kino Loy/Reader. Rated E.

„Directions“ by @zinzinina . Probably a sure sign that I am getting too old for all of this but tags about age gaps, first love or first times usually make me run for the hills. Add a character like Poe Dameron (I mean: come on! Howww…?!) to the mix and there is not enough willing suspension of disbelieve in the world to get me immersed in the plot. Or so I thought. Unwisely. Until this beauty came along. Poe Dameron/Reader. Rated E.

— A dinner date under the stars and moonlight.

“Where are you taking me exactly?” You giggled as Haldir led you through Lórien, his hand intertwined with yours.

“Somewhere special, my Love.” Haldir replied, not wanting to give away any information of where he was leading you.

He suddenly stopped. “We’re here, wait a minute.” He said moving behind you, putting his hands over your eyes.

“Is this a surprise?” You smiled.

“Something like that.” You heard Haldir chuckle. “Walk forward a bit...”

You walked forward a bit. You suddenly stumbled a bit and was going to fall when Haldir caught you in his strong arms. “Are you alright?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.” You assured Haldir.

Haldir kissed your cheek softly. “That’s good to hear.”

Suddenly, your eyes shifted to the most beautiful sight you’ve ever seen.

The garden was filled with flowers of every colour, the trees surrounding the flowers were caught lightly in the wind. There was a clear view of the stars and moon in the distance.

“Haldir... is this for me?” you breathed.

“Yeah...” Haldir frowned. “I wanted it to be a surprise though.”

You held both his hands and kissed them. “But it was a surprise, my Love.”

The corners of Haldir’s mouth moved upwards into a small smile. “Really?”

“Yes. Of course.” You held Haldir’s hand and lead him into the garden.

“So what do you think, my Star?” Haldir said, stopping you in the centre of the garden.

“Haldir, this is all too beautiful.” you reply.

It was truly breathtaking. Every minute you think about the garden and Haldir, who had set it up, your emotions become a whirlpool of love and affection.

“Not as beautiful as you.” Haldir smiled, leaning in to fill the distance between both of your lips. The kiss was fleeting, but felt gentle and comforting in it’s few moments. “Everyday I fall even more in love with you.”

“I feel the same about you too, my Love.” you smiled against his lips.

“Shall we have our dinner?” Haldir asked.

“Let us.” you replied.

And that night, the laughs of two soulmates rung through the kingdom, reminding everyone of their love.

Shattered (Haldir X fem!Reader) Part 2

A/N: Part 2 is finally here! I never meant for this story to be anymore than a one-shot but then I felt bad for not giving Haldir a happy ending and lets all be honest with ourselves, he deserves to have a happy ending *ahem* Peter Jackson *ahem*. This story has really taken on a life of its own. Needless to say, there is definitely going to be a part 3, maybe a part 4 depending on where the plot takes me. Also, “Y/N” in this fic was written with a certain hair/eye color because that is what I imagined as I was writing it but feel free to imagine whatever hair/eye color you want!

“Haldir!” Y/N shouted from the top of the mallorn their talan resided in. “Meleth nin! You are finally home!” It had been two long months since Haldir had departed for the borders of Lorien. Two long months you had been without him by your side. Two long months since you had felt the firm press of his slightly chapped lips against yours. Two months too long for many things but none of that mattered now. He was here and he was safe.

You sidled down the curving steps of the mallorn. Your slightly extended belly proved to be a hinderance but that did not stop you from racing down the steps and flinging yourself bodily into you husbands extended arms. You felt the woolen fibers of his grey tunic scratch the sensitive skin of your cheek as you pressed it against his broad shoulder. You noticed some rips and tears that would need mending but that could wait until later; none of that mattered right now. All that mattered was that you were once again reunited with your love.

Haldir could finally breathe. He felt as if a weight had been placed upon his chest since his departure for the fences and was just now being lifted. He felt the tension and stress melt away as he breathed in your scent. The sweet jasmine infused oils that you liked to use in your daily baths mixed with what Haldir could only describe as you. Tendrils of rich copper tickled his nose as he nuzzled his cheek against the top of your hair. Home. That is the only word that could resonate with his current state. Love. It was the only emotion he could register. It invaded his very soul; it curled around his fingertips; it embraced every part of his body until he was woozy with it. Carefully, he set you down on your feet as one hand extended towards you swollen belly and the other wrapped possessively behind the back of your neck, fingers curling around the thick, red curls, and crashed his lips against yours. The world was quiet. He could not hear the songbirds whistling their early morning tune, nor could he hear the rustle of the golden leaves of the mellryn that surrounded them. All he could hear was the pounding of his heart; the erratic thump, thump, thump for the woman who stood in his embrace. His love. His soulmate. His Y/N.

“Y/N.” Her whispered name but a prayer upon his kiss-starved lips. “I have missed you dearly, meleth nin. Not one day has gone by where I have not longed to be with you. My heart sings to have you back in my arms.”

Y/N lent back on the balls of her feet, reaching up to tenderly cup the side of her husband’s jaw before reaching back up on tip toes to capture his lips with her own. Haldir was considerably taller than she was —at least a head taller. And where most elves were lithe and willowy, Haldir was broad and muscled. She could barely wrap both of her hands around one of his biceps and the sheer breadth of his shoulders was enough to intimidate even the burliest of beings. Except for her, of course. Where Haldir often felt awkward in his physical appearance, she reveled in it. She missed the feeling of his strong arms wrapping around her waist or how he would have to bend down to bestow a kiss upon her lips. He was beautiful, in a lethal sort of way and she never failed to remind him how attractive he was to her, to which such a statement would cause his cheeks to sport a bright red blush and would leave him sputtering. For being a Marchwarden of Lorien, he sure did fluster easily.

“How have you faired, melda?” Haldir whispered as he broke apart from your lips, eyes hooded with desire.

You snaked a hand into the back of his hair, fingers tugging at the warrior braid in the back as you pulled his head down for another languid kiss. “I am better now that you are here.” You murmured against his lips as you traced their outline with the tip of your tongue.

A purely masculine noise rose from the back of Haldir’s throat at your ministrations. The hand that gripped the back of your neck slowly began to make its way down, tracing the length of your spine.

“And how is our little one fairing?” He managed to choke out between his labored breaths.

“Our child fairs well.” You respond as you lace your fingers through his hand that is still resting on your swollen belly. “But they have missed you greatly, just as I have, and we are overjoyed to have you back at home.”

At hearing this, Haldir sported a small, shy smile and finally met your eyes. Amber eyes that shown as gold as the halls of Erebor shown back at his stormy blue ones. Eyes filled with such love and warmth that he could hardly believe you were looking at him. Him. Of all people, you chose to love him, and he would spend the rest of his days proving to you that he deserved your love. Haldir took your hand in his larger one, rubbing a calloused thumb over the smooth skin of your knuckles and gently coaxed you towards the steps leading to your shared talan.

“Come, my love. Let us continue this upstairs,” but before he could take another step, Y/N’s hand slid out of his. “Y/N, meleth nin, wh—” Haldir froze. The clearing you were just standing in, the clearing in front of your talan, the clearing where he had asked you to spend the rest of your immortal life with him, was empty. In fact—there was no clearing. There was no talan. No mellryn. No Y/N. Everything surrounding him was black. He could not make out the leaf strewn ground that was there mere moments ago, nor could he see the sun, the moon, the stars. Nothing.

“Y/N?” Haldir hesitantly called out to you. “Y/N!” he yelled in a more panicked tone, spinning in circles, eyes searching for any sign of you. Dread began to pool itself inside of his belly, heart beating erratically. What was happening? Where did you go? “Y/N!” he screamed as he began to frantically run towards the nothingness. He knew that he was moving and yet he felt like he was standing in the same blank void where he had held you. Haldir stopped, turning in circles, hoping to catch any glimpse of where you may have gone. His hands curled into the sides of his hair as he yanked on it in desperation. Breathing erratic, heart somersaulting inside of his chest, Haldir fell to his knees and in one final attempt, cried your name up to the heavens in hopes that Eru himself may hear and take pity on him….”

Hiya, Nonnie! Honestly I saw this and was really confused until I realized that I was the dumbass who reblogged the Director's Cut post. You sent me five stars?! Of my choosing?!

So I have five series running right now (three are published, two are not.) It would take me way too long to talk about why I wrote each one, so I'm going to pick a set of lines from the published WIPs, most likely from unpublished chapters and give some of my thoughts about it. Under the cut because of a long post.

House Enduring (Celeborn X OC)

“My marriage is annulled and I do not love her in the way you speak of! If Eru has given me another chance to find love again, then why should I reject such a gift!?” Celeborn finally snapped. “Get out!”

Sensitive subject, Elrond thought, unfolding himself from the chaise and trying to check Celeborn over but the ellon in question bared his teeth at the touch, smacking his hand away. “OUT!” Something dangerous sparked in Celeborn’s eyes. He may not have had the strength to pick up a sword and fight, but he was exerting his presence over Elrond, daring the other ellon to challenge him. Celeborn set his jaw, drawing himself to his full height. He still barely met Elrond’s own and Elrond seemed hardly intimidated by the show.

“I am not some whelp of an ellon that I would cower beneath your presence, Celeborn.” Elrond replied.

“You will leave. Or I will make you leave.”

My thoughts on House Enduring...

Why did I choose Celeborn?

He's not particularly popular character and I see even less content of people shipping with him.

But he's married!

Yes, he's married to Galadriel canonically. I mean, technically, even in the beginning of this story, he's married to Galadriel. So why did I choose to annul their marriage rather than just twisting canon so that the relationship never existed? There's a concept that elves can fade to heartbrokenness, that they can simply just wither and die-- so what if after centuries upon centuries of being in a political marriage, Celeborn starts to fade. Does it mean that his soulmate lies elsewhere? Galadriel seems to think so; that's why she lets him go.

Brenior is a shapeshifter? What does that mean? And why did you make the pronouns switch from time to time?

Brenior is a shapeshifter. I went with animals, mythological creatures, and people-- and not people in the sense that he can change into other people he sees, but he can shift his features to look the way he wants to.

So, this brings me back to my own questions. Why do I have multiple pronouns in this story?

Ah, this was a question in my mind that initially made me extremely nervous about posting House Enduring. Brenior identifies as male. He would be what is considered AFAB (assigned female at birth). Does he have multiple forms, including a female form? Absolutely. Does that mean he is not male? Absolutely not. For purposes of the story, I intentionally point out she/her for female forms. That being said, Brenior is comfortable with she/her, they/them pronouns, but prefers he/him pronouns. I am not trying to invalidate anyone's experiences in this story; I am trying to explore myself. If it is offensive to you, I encourage you not to read it. This story may have a plot that is fantasy and be set in a world beyond our own, but I based Brenior on me, my traumas, my past... and paths what could be my future.

Beauty in Brokenness (Glorfindel X Reader)

He recognized the signs on you. Arda has become the home to many wayfaring strangers and you were not the first. You’re just now realizing the bleakness of the situation you were in. You’ll be the first one to survive longer than the other humans. You’ll be the first to survive longer than humans borne and raised here. Valar knows, you might even outlive the race of elves. You looked so torn, and there was no way that you weren’t mourning the loss of everything you’ve ever had, and for once, Elrond looked at you and even saw the same twinge of darkness that had frightened you so badly. Your path was unset; only you had the power to set it.

Reader is in a courtship with Glorfindel. What happens next?

A lot of things happen next, but the path of healing must be the first thing. After that, I'm considering merging some modern human ideas with Elvish culture. Also this is set during the timeline of The Hobbit so there will at least be a little bit of leeway and peace in between the two timelines.

Reader is immortal?

Reader is immortal! Reader does have the chance to outlive the race of elves. Interestingly enough, I have a feeling that Valinor will eventually be a question for Glorfindel and I think... I think it's likely he'll raise hell if Reader can't sail with him.

“Do you have other family, elven-kin?” Lindir asked, curious about Eryniel. He’d only ever seen her in passing, delivering messages to Erestor or to Lord Elrond, never actually meeting her himself.

“I do. I have three brothers.” Eryniel replied, sitting back on her heels for a moment, considering the family she had left behind in Lorien.

“I suppose they chose to sail as well?”

“No. They are part of the Galadhrim. They stayed behind to fight. And they cannot care for a mortal, I don’t think. I know now that my parents’ decision was to leave me in the House of Elrond, although I think I would have preferred knowing that decision myself.”

“Elrond has been like a father to many.” Lindir murmured, although he certainly did not agree with the decision that her parents had made. How cruel.

Why are you rewriting it?

Simply? Because it has way more detail than an X Reader fic should have. Because I want to include way more detail than would be appropriate for an X Reader fic.

Eryniel?

Means daughter of the woods. The root will probably seem familiar-- Eryn Galen, Eryn Lasgalen, etc.

Are you really changing that much detail in the rewrite?

Immensely so. I'm not just changing it from second person to third person. I'm adding in details, smoothing out scenes, solidifying the brother/sister relationship between Haldir and Eryniel, and revealing the internal struggle within Haldir as he wars with telling her the full truth right out the gate.
