The Murder of Carla Walker
Tumblr media
Carla Jan Walker was a 17-year-old schoolgirl living in Texas, USA, she enjoyed dancing and spending time with her friends and boyfriend, Rodney. Carla was described as likeable and ‘the kind of girl who smiled and said hello to everyone,’ she was thinking about enrolling at Texas Tech University.
On 17th February 1974, Carla was sitting with Rodney in his car in the parking lot of Brunswick Ridglea Bowel, they had just attended a Valentine’s Day dance at Western Hills High School and were on their way home. The door was opened and an unknown assailant pistol-whipped Rodney who fell unconscious. Rodney’s last memory was Carla being grabbed and taken by the man, Rodney had heard the man say, ‘You’re coming with me,’ and Carla screaming for help. When he regained consciousness, Carla was nowhere to be seen, he quickly drove to Carla’s home and told her parents what had happened and to contact the emergency services.
The police were called and searched the car park, Carla’s purse and a magazine clip the attacker had dropped were the only things left behind and there were no clues where her abductor had taken her. On 20th February, Carla’s body was found near a reservoir, she was covered in scratches and bruises and her dress was bloody and ripped. An autopsy showed she had been beaten, tortured, raped and strangled. Toxicology reports showed she had been injected by morphine and bodily fluids were found on her clothing. The technology in the 1970s was not advanced enough to use the DNA samples to identify the killer but they were stored.
The murder remained a cold case for almost 50 years until in September 2020 the DNA was finally matched to Glen Samuel McCurley. Three days into his trial, McCurley changed his plea to guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.
Investigators believe McCurley may have been involved in the rapes and murders of at least three other girls and young women in the same area in the 1970s and 1980s though he had not been charged with any additional crimes.

UNSOLVED But Not Forgotten: The Lake Bodom Murders
In the summer of 1960, a triple murder against three teenagers who were on a camping trip took place. This is one of the most infamous homicide cases in Finnish history, and over 60 years later, it still remains unsolved.
Tumblr media
The image above: Irmeli, Tuulikki, Seppo, Nils.
On Saturday, June 4th, 1960, four teenagers decided to go on a weekend camping trip at Lake Bodom. Maila Irmeli Björklund and Anja Tuulikki Mäki, both 15, along with their boyfriends, Seppo Antero Boisman and Nils Wilhelm Gustafsson, both 18. Sometime between 4:00AM and 6:00AM on Sunday morning, June 5th, three of the teenagers were found stabbed and bludgeoned to death. The remaining survivor, Gufstafsson, was found unconscious with stab wounds and fractured facial bones. The bodies were discovered around 11:00AM by a carpenter, Esko Johansson.
The investigation declared that the victims were not killed inside of their tents, but while they were outside, fully conscious. It was obvious that the victims were killed with a knife, and they suspected that the item used to bludgeon them was most likely some kind of rock. The weapons were never found. Detectives found it unusual that the killer(s) stole multiple items, including Gufstafssons shoes, and the keys to their motorcycles, which were both left behind. The shoes were found partially hidden around 500 meters from the murder scene. The police made a major error in this investigation, as they didn’t write down any details, nor did they block off the murder site. This mistake was made further problematic as they called in soldiers to help search around the site and the lake for any further items or evidence, most of which weren’t found. Mäki, Gufstafssons girlfriend, was found with the most brutal injuries out of the three. She was found on top of the tent, naked from the waist down, and was stabbed several times after she had already died, while the others had less stab wounds, and none that were made after death. Gufstafsson was also found unconscious on top of the tent, next to his girlfriend. Around 6:00AM, a few boys who were birdwatching a bit of a distance away, noticed the tent had collapsed, and believed they saw a tall blonde man walking away from the area.

SUSPECTS
There were a lot of suspects over the time-span of the investigation, but these were the top three that were the most notable:
Valdemar Gyllström: A lot of people who lived locally suspected this man, a kiosk keeper, due to his anger and hostility towards campers in the past. They claimed he was violent, threw rocks at campers, cut down their tents, and some people even claimed he was the tall blonde man that they saw walking away from the scene the morning the bodies were discovered. He had apparently made confessions, but not to the police, which they were skeptical about and considered to be false confessions as they considered the man to be disturbed. A book that was released in 2006 brings up this theory in detail, along with how the police ignored a lot of evidence that was previously unknown to the public due to language barriers, along with other things. Valdemar drowned in Lake Bodom in 1969, which was assumed to be a suicide.
Hans Assman: Hans lived pretty close to where the murders occurred, and a series of popular books discussed the theory of this man being the killer, amongst other murders as well. However, this suspect was not taken seriously by the police, as he had a solid alibi the night of the murders, and was said to have been in Germany during the time another murder had taken place.
Last but not least, the most controversial suspect on this list:
Nils Gustafsson: 44 years after the murders, in March of 2004, Gufstafsson was arrested, but the public remained unaware. In early 2005, the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation declared that this case was finally solved, based on new forensic analysis. When it came to the bloodstains, the prosecutors declared that Gustafsson was drunk, and came out of the tent when he attacked the other 18 year old boy, which started the fight, causing his jaw to get broken, and the fight escalated to murder. It was also known that the shoes worn by the killer were found hidden away, 500 yards from the scene, and they were believed to belong to Gufstaffson, considering he was found barefoot at the crime scene. New DNA analysis showed that blood was found on those shoes by all three of the murdered victims, but no blood from Gufstafsson was found on the shoes.
On August 4th, 2005, the trial started. His defense lawyers argued that these murders were the work of one or more outsiders, as it would’ve been impossible for Gufstafsson to kill three people in the condition that he was in. The prosecution rebutted, claiming that his injuries occurred after the murders happened, faking the theft of the items by hiding them, then inflicting his injuries onto himself, and pretending to be unconscious to further make him look like a victim. When Gufstaffson was questioned if he saw the killer, he claimed he saw a glimpse of an attacker, who wore all black and had bright red eyes, running towards them. The prosecution further claimed that he must’ve been the tall blonde man that the bird watching boys saw walking away from the crime scene, along with claiming that he had been overheard making an incriminating remark, along with the claim that he had allegedly boasted to a woman about his guilt a decade after the murders took place.
Gufstafsson was acquitted of all charges on October 7th, 2005, due to the evidence the prosecution gave being inconclusive, certainty about facts now being impossible due to the significant amount of time that had went by, and failing to show any motive that Gufstaffson had to have committed the murders. The state of Finland paid him €44,900 for the mental suffering caused by this trial, and the case remains unsolved to this day.

PA COLD CASE: Mary Ann Bagenstose
Mary Ann's mother had no idea when she spoke to her daughter on the calm, breezy morning of June 5th, 1984 that it would be the last time she would ever be heard from again. Waiting for his estranged wife to finish her makeup for the day they had planned, Jere Bagenstose left to take the pair's 2-year-old son Jeremy to the park to feed the ducks, however when he returned, he didn't find Mary Ann. Just a note saying she walked to the nearby gas station. That was the last known communication with the 25-year-old nurse's aide. This is the story of Mary Ann Bagenstose.
On June 5th, 1984, in her last phone call, Mary Ann excitedly told her mother she was going to be picked up by her estranged husband, Jere Bagenstose, to go look at a vehicle she either planned to purchase or he was considering buying for her, depending on which source you read. When Jere arrived, he told authorities Mary Ann wasn't ready yet and needed to finish her make up, so he took their son to Long's Park to feed the ducks. It's unclear how long the two were at the park or when they returned to the home. When they returned, Jere claims his wife wasn't there and had left a note on the kitchen counter (that he supposedly threw away) stating her car wouldn't start so she was walking to the local Turkey Hill she frequented. According to multiple friends as well as Mary Ann's mom, walking to the gas station was out of character for her because she walked with a slight limp due to a car accident when she was younger that required her to wear a lift in one shoe. When investigators spoke to the clerks at Turkey Hill, they did not remember seeing Mary Ann, who was well known to the staff seeing as she was a regular. William Yellets, a boarder who was staying with Mary Ann at the time and has since passed, was also interviewed and provided no substantial information. No belongings of Mary Ann's were disturbed and there was no signs of struggle. There are a lot of questions and holes in the stories regarding this case. Very little detail was released to the public and there is surprisingly minimal media coverage for Mary Ann's story. Why would she have walked three-quarters of a mile to the gas station with a bad leg, especially knowing her husband and son are coming back soon to go look at a car? How long were Jere and Jeremy gone?
The separated couple was in the middle of a divorce and the two were scheduled to attend a custody hearing for their son the day after she went missing. Fields near the home were searched, as well as the floor in the garage dug up, both yielding little to go on, if anything at all. Foul play is suspected and the case has been declared a homicide.
The home where Mary Ann resided, now the home of Jere and his current wife, was searched by dozens of police and forensic units for nearly 9 hours just recently on September 22, 2022. Jere was not present for the search, and the warrant is sealed so it is not yet known what they were looking for, if anything was found, or if it directly relates to Mary Ann Bagenstose's disappearance.

The Murder of Siobhan McGuiness
Tumblr media
Siobhan McGuiness was a 5-year-old girl from Montana, she was described as always smiling and a happy girl.
In the early hours of 5th February 1974, Siobhan went missing during a short walk home from her friend’s house. On that same day another young girl had reported that an unidentified male had attempted to lure her into a shed but that she had got away.
Three days later, Siobhan’s body was found. She had been sexually assaulted, stabbed in the chest and badly beaten. Despite a reward fund being organised, no viable suspects or evidence could be found and the case gradually grew cold. DNA evidence was preserved from the crime scene but not matched.
In 2020, new DNA technology advancements allowed the FBI to develop a genetic profile of Siobhan’s killer who was officially identified as Robert William Davis, Siobhan’s family described their relief in finally knowing what had happened. Davis had died in 2012, he was never a suspect in the original investigation and was travelling through Montana for unknown reasons when Siobhan was murdered. The FBI suspect he may have murdered other children in multiple states as he was known to have travelled often, however he has not yet been named in relation to any other cases.
