hello (one of the) resident phannie data analyst(s) here with some parasocial stats on dnp’s movie tastes! following: distribution of dan and phil's ratings overall, movies they each rated 5 stars, their lowest-rated movies, and the similarities + differences in their tastes

(lore moment: yes i am a data analyst in my real job. yes i surprised myself with wanting to do this in my spare time. but then i remembered when we read dracula in college (yes i was an english major) and i graphed like, how many times dracula was referred to as vampire versus monster or something. so i shouldn’t be surprised.

first up, their overall rating patterns and by ~special status~ (i.e., wall-e, kill bill, avatar, lmao, plus big hero 6 for the fun of it)

dan’s rated 304 movies and phil’s rated 305. both of them have mean and median ratings of 4 with min 1 and max 5.

both rated kill bill vols. 1 and 2 a 5. wall-e got a 4.5 from dan and a 4 from phil (phake phans). both gave avatar a 3.5. and big hero 6 3.5 (dan) and 4.5 (phil)

rating distribution:

i did analyses here by genre but i need to fix the output (i’m writing all of these based on the markdown document from my phone on the subway, but i need to fix the outputs and i don’t have my computer. so those are pending but there are other genre analyses that i could do & haven’t yet!)

while i was sorting through the data i got the impression that dan overall rated movies higher than phil. so, among movies that they've both rated, here's some information

List of russian lies in the UN or during diplomatic speeches:

1. In January-February of 2022 russia claimed in the UN that they will not invade Ukraine, that they have no plans to invade Ukraine, and evidence of upcoming invasion are lies made by the US or others.

End of the same month russia launched a full-scale invasion.

2. Russia claimed in the UN that the reason they attacked Ukraine was to fight some "local nazis" and that they are indeed good guys fighting Ukrainian hatred. That, however, does not explain why: a) russia opposed the grain deal until Turkey threatened to make it work one way or the other, showing their intention to starve hundreds of millions of people in neutral countries for no reason whatsoever, b) russia refused to allow UN or Red Cross etc to observe the conditions of POWs or to open humanitarian corridors for people to escape from Mariupol or other conflict zones, with thousands of witnesses reporting abductions, filtration camps, and shelling of retreating civilians, c) russia claimed to only want to protect local russian population, yet completely destroyed whole cities in majorly-russian-speaking Eastern Ukraine, like Mariupol (satellites showing mass graves), and bombing mainly civilian targets - schools, hospitals, theatres, a shopping mall during peak hours, a train station where people waited for evacuation, apartment buildings, etc. Currently we can see that there is no effort on the russian-controlled side of Dnipro river to help people in flooded areas, with videos and citizen testimonies reporting shelling of all disaster aid attempts, d) russia claimed that they only hate the "nazi" Ukrainian government, yet they openly shelled Ukrainian power grids during winter, for no other reason than to leave innocent civilians with no gas or electricity.

3. Russian state TV, public figures like Solovyov, former President and Prime Minister as well as head of security council of russia Medvedev openly stated either on national TV or in their social media pages that they want to "exterminate" Ukrainians. That the whole country should not exist, that Ukrainian language is fake, etc etc. This is genocidal speech and it is not limited to Ukraine either. The Baltic States, Poland, etc also received such claims - that they "do not exist" that they "belong to russia" or that they "should be invaded". Makes it very obvious who the imperialistic, colonist aggressor actually is. Medvedev also repeatedly threatened Western European countries with missile or even nuclear attack, yet they claim to only be "defending themselves".

4. Lavrov got laughed at during a summit in India for claiming that "russia was invaded by Ukraine". Do I even need to explain why this is a lie? If I do, check 1st point again. Or just turn on your brain.

5. Then there's more sci-fi nutjobby official russian claims (or lies) about - bioweapons in Ukraine, pidgeons carrying disease or weapons to russia, Ukraine having some super-soldiers, or even dark magic, as indicated by russian Ministry of Defense changing the goal of their "special military operation" from "denazification" to "desatanization".

And that's just a few of the main ones. More is discussed in the latest UN meeting, you can watch the video on their official website.

So, knowing all of this, why the fuck would you believe ANYTHING they say? Especially about the destruction of dam?

Russia has repeatedly shown aggressive attitude towards neighbouring countries, claimed their wish to occupy them, russian officials called for extermination of whole nationalities, and both President putin and Belova have enough evidence against them for ICC to issue a warrant for them for GENOCIDE AND WAR CRIMES.

If you still believe in russia, despite anything they themselves say, you're either a genocide-supporter or unbelievably stupid.

01 - Before it all began

Pairing: General Kirigan X Female Reader

Part 02

Warnings: None at all. This series encompass mainly romance, fluff, angst.

Summary: A Princess embroiled in an arranged betrothal to the most feared General Aleksander Kirigan, the leader of the Second Army in Ravka. Would this be a mere political alliance or something more than it meets the eye?

Bonus: I couldn’t stop listening to the soundtrack while writing this chapter.

General Kirigan stood skimming the map of Ravka which was laid down on an enormous table that ran almost half of the space in the room, immersed in his thoughts. The sound of firewood crackling is the only thing that could be heard in his dark-lit war room. The room was cramped with cabinets loaded with maps, artifacts, paintings, books and whatnot. Beside him was his untouched Kvas, in front of him, on the wall was a black banner showcasing his coat of arms, embellished with glittering intricate silver details, which depicted the Sun in Eclipse but not a single star was there to adorn it.

He had found his Sun Summoner whom he had been looking for centuries after making many endeavors. He had made sure to keep an eye on her every step of the way because he wanted to make sure nothing goes awry so that everything could be executed according to his whims and fancies.

His eyes rested upon the banner of his symbol for a while. “It feels empty and lonely, just as my soul”, He thought to himself. He was too adamant to admit that he was lonely in this world after spending centuries on his own.

General Kirigan’s train of thoughts was interrupted by subdued knock on the door.

“What is it, Ivan?”, the General asked in his husky voice.

“The King’s brother, Prince Richard is here for an audience with you, General”, Ivan replied. He was one of the General’s Oprichniki and most trusted soldiers.

General Kirigan knew why the Prince requested an audience with him that evening. Few weeks ago, the King himself communicated to him about his betrothal to the Princess Y/N, which was indeed considered as an emblematic union that benefited both parties by the King and his advisers with the intention of bolstering the alliance between the Grisha and the people of Ravka. Even though, the General didn’t have a speck of an hope to get married, it was not his position to defy the King. Whether he wanted or not, he was deprived of any choice but to concede.

“Ah yes. I was informed about this meeting. Don’t keep him waiting, Ivan.” said the General while fixing up his kefta.

Ivan opened the door for the Prince to enter.

“Moi tsarevich, it’s an honor to have you in my chambers.” The General bowed to the Prince.

“It’s pleasure meeting you, General. I wanted to meet you myself here because of the gravity of the matter I intend to discuss with you.” The Prince said glancing at Ivan.

“Ivan, you may wait outside” Ivan bowed to the General and the Prince and took his leave, closing the doors behind him.

“A glass of Kvas for you, moi tsarevich. Let me send a word to the kitchen to bring some refreshments for you” The General offered a glass of Kvas to the Prince.

“Thank you, General. No need for other refreshments. Let me cut to the chase.” The Prince uttered with a grave expression on his face. “ I hope you’re aware that my daughter will return to the Grand Palace on the day of the Winter Fete.”

“Yes. The King informed me about her arrival few days before” The General nodded in agreement.

“There’s something about her that others are not aware of, specially the Royal Family which puts her safety at peril” The Prince muttered, turning towards the General.

The General furrowed his brows. “ What is it, moi tsarevich? If it concerns her safety, it must be a grave matter.” Anything that would put his prospective bride’s life in harm’s way, would affect him as well, at least remotely.

The Prince stared at the fireside for a while, swirling the glass of Kvas. “This is a secret that should be kept between us, General. Otherwise, the Princess’s life will be at an immense stake”

“I give you my word, moi tsarevich. You have always been an ally and a pillar of support of Grisha.” General bobbed his head respectfully.

Your father had been supportive of Grisha in many respects for many years. He always believed that they should live in harmony without being downtrodden or marginalized. As a matter fact, he had played a integral role in holding discussions with the Fjeardan government on behalf of the royal family of Ravka regarding the Grisha held in custody at the Ice Court of Fjearda and even gone out of his way to help them escape from the Fjeardans. Therefore, your father was a well-respected royal by Grisha. You, his only child, well, there’s a saying that an Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

“ I trust you, General and you’re her fiancé. It is the reason for me to have this conversation with you” The Prince stepped closer to the General. “My daughter, Y/N is capable of wielding the powers of Small Science”

The General was astounded by what the Prince just said. He found himself dumbstruck for a moment as a pin-drop silence loomed over the room for a minute or two. He couldn’t believe his own ears for moment. A Grisha in the Royal family was such a rare occurrence. It had never been known for Grisha to have a Royal descent; A Grisha Princess.

“You mean, she is a Grisha, moi tsarevich?” General Kirigan broke the silence. There was a scintilla of uncertainty in his voice. “Was she tested when she was little?” The members of the royal family were hardly tested by Grisha examiners as the chances of a Royal being a Grisha was minimal. Until this moment, it was reckoned null.

“No. We got to know it few years ago, before she was sent to Ketterdam” The Prince added. “Now that she will be here, I want to ensure that her life is not at stake. I have heard many rumors about attempts to kidnap the Sun Summoner.” He paused for a while before uttering what he really wanted to say. “You will not, by any means, use her as one of your Grisha soldiers, General.” It sounded more as if the Prince was commanding the General, rather than engaging in a typical conversation between soon-to-be father in law and his son in law. “It will only transpire more chaos than what our family already has”

“You have my word, moi tsarevich. I’ll personally see to her safety concerns. She’ll be safer here than being at her home. Don’t worry” The General’s assuring words appeased the Prince’s doubts about your safety to some extent. “As far as this alliance goes, I don’t intend to make her one of the soldiers.” Besides, his focus was mainly centered on Alina Starkov in that period of time.

“It’s a relief to hear those words from you” The Prince placed his hand on the General’s shoulder. “Thank you, General Kirigan. From the day of Winter Fete onwards, she will be one of your prioritized responsibilities, in addition to, leading the Second Army of course” The Prince chuckled, looking at the war table which denoted the current positions of the army encampments.

“It’s my honor and duty to you” The General said reassuringly.

“Then I must take my leave, General Kirigan” The Prince walked toward the door with the General to his left side.

“ Looking forward to meeting the Princess, moi tsarevich” General Kirigan paused for a while. “Before you leave, do you know what order she belongs to ?”

The Prince turned back to face the General.

“An etherealki, technically.”

General Kirigan’s eyes gleamed as a smile settled on his lips.

The General sat on the edge of his war table after the Prince left. A prickle of excitement went through his skin, engulfed with impatience to meet the Princess. He was never fond of this alliance, until he heard the word that you were a Grisha, just like him which piqued his enthusiasm to see you and get to know you. The crowning glory was he was the first to know and nobody else in the Royal family knew about it. At least, he knew he didn’t despise the idea of being introduced to you.

There’s not any dull moment nor rest where youth and pleasure meet.

Summary: Actions speak louder than words, and Bucky takes note of Steve’s actions as your relationship naturally grows.

Content Warnings: all floof and softness here

Additional Notes: THE BROOKLYN BOYS HOLIDAY SPECIAL (but theoretically could be read on its own). Just a little drabble-y something for my 2022 Holiday Extravaganza! I have a lot of feelings for this trio in my heart.

James Buchanan Barnes was a fittingly pretentious name for an overly enthusiastic nerd.

“Best friends since childhood, Bucky Barnes and Steven Rogers were inseparable on both schoolyard and battlefield.”

The truth was, when they were little, Steve wasn’t that much smaller than everyone else. Steve picked up his hatred for bullies when Bucky hadn’t figured out that obviously being the smartest kid in the room and obliviously enjoying the process of acquiring more knowledge earned him a target as a nerd. Steve defended him, befriended him, and helped him mellow out. He never suggested that Bucky change who he was, just helped him navigate the early years of school social dynamics and learn how not to come off as an insufferable know it all in every situation. It was later, when Steve was left behind as the one who was too short and too scrawny that Bucky got to finally pay him back in the battle against bullies – not that Steve would let him, but that’s friendship, with each other ‘til the end of the line whichever way the train’s heading.

Still, Bucky’s always been too intelligent, too observant, too curious. It’s what made him stand out in the 107th, which was good in the field, but bad when it got him on Zola’s table the first time. For better and worse it put him on the top of the list of HYDRA’s assets during his purgatory as the Winter Soldier. He wasn’t perfect, but his margin of error was next to zero.

These days living his life in Brooklyn, he doesn’t catch everything every hour of every day, but he still loves learning, his mind is still ever observant, ever curious, and after enough years of coming to terms with who he is now again – James Buchanan Barnes and only sometimes the White Wolf – he enjoys that part of himself again.

He is an unapologetic Ravenclaw now that he’s read Harry Potter.

One morning over breakfast as he’s over at the counter pouring himself another cup of coffee, he looks over to see Steve holding your hand casually on the corner of the table. Steve is scrolling through his phone; you’re eating cereal and watching the morning news. It’s beautifully mundane, almost nothing noteworthy, except Bucky notices that as Steve holds your left hand, he’s absentmindedly running his thumb over your ring finger precisely where a ring would be. Bucky smiles to himself but doesn’t say anything.

A few days later he sees Steve doing it again when you’re all in a car on your way upstate. Steve’s driving, you’re in the passenger seat, and Bucky volunteered to sit in the back so he could read over the long haul, but he notices this even though neither you nor Steve seem to register it happening here either.

The next time Bucky sees it happen again, you’re on the phone, so you don’t hear the soft and single laugh that rumbles out of his chest, but Steve does, and gives him a quizzical look. Bucky shakes his head ever so slightly and mouths a later to Steve.

When Steve corners him later, Bucky tells him exactly what he saw. Steve opens and closes his mouth wordlessly a couple of times, and Bucky laughs. “You want to put a ring on that finger.”

“But there’s no rush,” Steve is quick to say.

“Of course not.”

Steve turns away, then turns back. “You do, too, right?”

Bucky gives him an emphatic nod, an easy smile on his face. He has no question over wanting to spend the rest of his life with the two of you.

When it happens idly a couple more times, Bucky catches Steve’s eye each time and looks pointedly down at your hands, and Steve will stop without trying to be too abrupt or draw your attention in any way. Bucky and Steve have known each other a lifetime, but they’ve never wanted to rush you.

A few months later, as you stand back from putting the last ornament on the tree, Steve takes your left hand and kisses the back of it sweetly as you comment on how the decorations look and Bucky and Steve respond. As he lowers your hands, he locks eyes with Bucky, then drops his eyes down to where his thumb is brushing over your ring finger, and back up to meet Bucky’s gaze. Bucky arches his brow, and Steve inclines his chin just a fraction, the corner of his mouth lifting in a confident statement of his intentions. Bucky beams back at him.

“What are you grinning at?” you ask when neither of them has answered the question you just asked.

“Nothing,” Bucky responds, “we just finished decorating our first Christmas tree with you, of course we’re grinning.”

You look suspiciously between them for half a second. “Okay. I’m ordering Indian for dinner since the question you both completely missed was what you’re in the mood for. But for the record, I know you two are scheming.”

“Us? Never, sweetheart,” Steve says in an exaggeratedly innocent voice, and you roll your eyes.

But Bucky and Steve are discreet and although you do catch them in some of their other plots and schemes over the following weeks, you don’t suspect this is brewing between them. There’s a reason they’ve been unstoppable since childhood, after all.

Two years have passed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Russian brutality against Ukrainians has been striking, and the evidence of Russia’s war crimes is mounting as the atrocities continue.

What has become evident is that these war crimes are not aberrations or crimes of omission. They are part and parcel of what Russia is trying to achieve in Ukraine. Testimonies collected by my organization, the Reckoning Project, and by others point to the systematic and deliberate nature of Russia’s crimes.

This makes the pursuit of accountability in Ukraine not only about justice. It is also about denying Russia its objectives and setting a precedent for other states intent on attacking their neighbors. Ensuring accountability and justice in Ukraine will contribute to accountability and justice globally.

Every day, Ukraine’s Office of the Prosecutor General publishes on its website the total number of war crime cases that the office has registered since February 2022. This month, that number passed 125,000. The number—staggering by any account—increases every day, sometimes by the hundreds, and stands for thousands of destroyed lives. Each case is a devastating tragedy in and by itself.

The actual number of war crimes is much higher, as the reported number doesn’t account for most of the crimes committed in the occupied territories, where Ukrainian law enforcement has no access—close to 20 percent of Ukraine. There may be some 3 million Ukrainians still living in these territories. Many residents have fled, but many still remain.

Beyond the scale of the crimes, it’s crucial to understand that the atrocities are integral to Russia’s war aims. Of course, some crimes are the result of a rogue soldier’s actions. But the bulk of crimes stem directly from how and why Russia is waging war against Ukraine. They are a feature, not a bug, of Russia’s war. They are systematic, deliberate, and serve a clear purpose.

Take the missile and drone strikes against civilian critical infrastructure. Last winter, Russia launched a massive air campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, causing nearly irreparable damage to the energy network. The purpose of these attacks was to make Ukraine uninhabitable during the cold winter. This was intended to trigger a new wave of refugees into the European Union with the aim of creating divisions among Europeans and undermining their support for Ukraine.

Today, the barrages of missile and drone attacks against civilian targets—including schools, shopping malls, and apartment blocks—are meant to terrorize the population in order to undermine Ukrainian’s morale and put pressure on the government in Kyiv to capitulate.

Russia’s crimes can also be seen in the liberated territories. The scale and scope of these crimes became evident when Ukrainian forces entered previously occupied towns such as Bucha and Irpin in the early days of the invasion. Mass atrocities were also uncovered in the Kherson and Kharkiv regions after these territories were liberated.

The killing of civilians, torture, and disappearances were part of a deliberate strategy to terrorize the local population and rid the territories of Ukrainian resistance. These crimes were—and are—a deliberate means to subdue and control Ukrainians living under occupation.

When preparing the invasion, Russia developed plans to take over and exercise control over Ukrainian territories. These included filtration camps and death lists of notable activists, journalists, and politicians. Although Russia failed to take Kyiv, these policies are being implemented in the territories it managed to occupy.

As Alice Jill Edwards, the U.N. special rapporteur on torture, wrote in a report in September 2023, Russia’s torture of Ukrainians was “orchestrated as part of a State policy to intimidate, to instil fear, to punish, or to extract information and confessions.”

But these systematic war crimes are not merely about eliminating resistance and subjugating a conquered population to Russian rule. The aim is also to Russify these territories and the Ukrainians living there.

This can be seen in one of the most egregious crimes being committed by Russia: the deportation of Ukrainian children. Kyiv estimates that 20,000 Ukrainian children have been deported to Russia, of which fewer than 400 have been returned to Ukraine. The Reckoning Project and other organizations have documented ample evidence of these deportations.

Ukrainian children are sent to Russia—ostensibly to summer camp—and never returned to their parents. They are taken from orphanages in Ukraine and put in foster homes in Russia. They are separated from their parents in filtration camps. Many of the deported children are adopted by Russians and given Russian identities.

The deportation of children—the war crime on which the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin is based—goes to the heart of Russia’s objectives in Ukraine: to destroy Ukrainian identity, culture, and ultimately the nation.

This can also be seen in the systematic indoctrination and reeducation of Ukrainian children living in the occupied territories. Ukrainian children are effectively taught to abandon their Ukrainian identity and instead become loyal Russian subjects.

It is important to understand what Russian occupation means in Ukraine. It is not merely a question of switching the language from Ukrainian to Russian in schools or Ukrainian flags being replaced by Russian flags. Occupation means oppression, torture, disappearances, indoctrination, and kidnapped children. It means the eradication of one’s culture and identity.

Russia’s actions in the occupied territories demonstrably negate the argument that its invasion was sparked by fears that Ukraine would join NATO and pose a security threat to Russia. The aggression was driven by Putin’s imperial ambition of “gathering the Russian lands” by conquering Ukraine. The country’s possible membership in NATO or the EU was seen as an obstacle to this ambition rather than a security threat.

Moscow’s efforts to Russify Ukraine and Ukrainians are also why the notion of freezing the conflict and accepting Russian control over the occupied territories is unthinkable for most Ukrainians. Two years into the war, their will to fight remains remarkably high. This is because Ukrainians know what occupation means: the destruction of a large part of their nation. Contrary to many Western armchair strategists, they know that occupation is about people—not just about land.

Holding Russia accountable for its crimes in Ukraine matters first and foremost to the victims and their families. It is primarily about ensuring justice for those who have suffered from Russia’s aggression. But it is also about denying Russia its strategic objectives in Ukraine. The pursuit of accountability puts pressure on the perpetrators and can help deter further crimes. It is a way to push back at Russia’s attempt to terrorize the population, dismember the country, and destroy the nation.

The war in Ukraine is also part of Russia’s wider effort to remodel the rules-based international order. Moscow seeks a world where might makes right, where only strong countries are sovereign, and where disregard for the laws of war is the norm. It seeks a world in which Russia can act with impunity in its neighborhood and beyond.

In that way, the war in Ukraine was enabled by the weak international response to Russia’s past wars in Chechnya, Georgia, and Syria. Just as impunity in Chechnya, Georgia, and Syria enabled Russian crimes in Ukraine, impunity in Ukraine would enable crimes elsewhere.

That Russia, in particular, is the perpetrator matters. As a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council and a nuclear power, it has a direct impact on the fabric of the international system. Accountability in Ukraine will help deter other would-be perpetrators of war crimes, regardless of their international status and standing.

To this end, the arrest warrant against Putin for the deportation of Ukrainian children is particularly powerful. It restricts his ability to engage on the global stage and represent Russia in international relations. The designation as a suspected war criminal will follow him to his grave. Other would-be tyrants are taking note.

stayed up too late working on a crochet order for my small business

(Yes, I finally did it ! just starting out)

& at the same time, I was also on the phone with my boyfriend (he was telling me gossip from trivia night & funny stories about friends)

so we both got off the phone quickly because I didn't realize what time it was & I think he said real fast "go, go to sleeps, night night, love you, goodnight" so I said it back "ok, talk to you tomorrow, love you goodnight"

then the phone call cut off, so I wasn't sure if he heard me 😬 I was so scared !

but he did ! he heard me & texted me right after "love you too" 🥰

It made me so giggly & happy right before bed.

I'm so glad we finally feel comfortable saying it to each other & now he's been saying it more often without being afraid to express his feelings. 💐❤️

over the weekend, we were talking & he was holding me after I was confiding in him about struggling a bit & he just said "I love you, everything is ok, I'm sorry I didn't say it when I should have."

It meant so much because I was so worried he didn't feel the same. That was my biggest wish for him to love me back.

Sat will be our 1 year anniversary. 💌

I can't believe we've seen 4 seasons together, shared so many special moments & made a lot of loving memories.

June 2022, he was just "baseball guy ⚾️" here on the blog ! I saw him for the first time & didn't even know his name.

Dec 2022, he was "grumpy bb", & at first I thought that he couldn't stand me at all !

Jan 20th 2023, with a funny nudge from my best friend AR, we talked for the first time & hit it off immediately.

Jan 21st 2023, my phone broke & I had no way of contacting him. we were supposed to hang out on this day, so I went to the bar in person to wait for him. our best friend, "JJ"wrote his number down on my receipt for me, which I still have & carry with me in my purse wherever I go. The entire thing is faded except for his number & the date on the bottom.

Jan 29th 2023, we went for a walk in the cold winter & bonded over loving the movie "March of the Wooden Soldiers". We shared our first kiss, & my silly friends witnessed the whole thing. It was hysterical & wonderful at the same time.

Feb 2023, I gave him a special keychain of a plane that has meaning for us. Months later, he gave me a little blue pin with a plane on it, too.

We're pretty much inseparable. Sure, we've had our ups & downs, stupid fights & misunderstandings. No one said this would be easy or perfect. But I feel like we are it for each other & I wouldn't have it any other way.

The next morning, you woke up before the sun and Omaha tightened his hold on you. “Why? Why are you already awake?” “Because it’s wired into my being to be awake at ungodly hours, Neil. I thought you knew this.” “But after the events of last night, you shouldn’t be awake before my first alarm,” he nuzzled into your neck. You laughed and shook your head. “Come on, let’s get a run in.”

You pulled yourself from his arms and got up. “Or,” he sat up, “Or we could do another kind of cardio.” Omaha wiggled his brows, making you laugh and you decided to give in. “Alright, well, meet you in the bathroom then.” His face drops for a second, as he watches you go to your bathroom. “Wait seriously?” “Don’t keep me waiting, Aviator.”

After your ‘work-out’, you both ate breakfast in your underwear before getting dressed in your flight suits. “Come on, let's go. I don’t want to be late.”

The tables in the hangar were arranged so that solo pilots sat alone and duos sat together, but not wanting to have an uneven number of rows they made two solos share a table. Which today was you and Rooster.

“Morning, Star.” You gave him a smile as he sat down. “Good morning Rooster. You have a nice run?” He laughed, “I did, but my running buddy never showed.” You nodded, “Ah, I’m sure she would have shown, she just got a little distracted this morning. But I can guarantee that she got her morning cardio in.” You smirked and glanced back at Omaha where he was in deep conversation with Halo.

“Attention on deck!”

Chairs scraped on the concrete floor as you all stood up at attention. Cyclone and Warlock walked into the hangar, Warlock going straight to the podium. “G’Morning. Welcome to your special training detachment. Be seated.” You all sat down and relaxed into your seats.

“I’m Admiral Bates, NAWDC commander. You’re all TOPGUN graduates. The elite. The best of the best.” Everyone had proud smiles and confident smirks on their faces.

“That was yesterday.” Well, there goes that. You sat up a little straighter and leaned in to focus.

“The enemy's new fifth-generation fighter has leveled the playing field. Details are few, but you can be sure we no longer possess the technological advantage. Success, now more than ever, comes down to the man or woman in the box.” You watched Hangman turn to look at Phoenix who subtly flipped him off and then he turned back to you. You just winked and sat back in your chair.

“Half of you will make the cut. One of you will be named mission leader. The other half will remain in reserve.” Hangman once again turned towards you, but this time he was looking at Rooster.

When he turned back around you leaned over, “God, you can feel the sexual tension in DC.” Bradley whipped his head to look at you and he scoffed, “Shut up.”

“Your instructor is a TOPGUN graduate with real world experience in every mission aspect you will be expected to master. His exploits are legendary.”

You picked up the sound of boots first, but didn’t turn around until they got closer. “And he’s considered one of the finest pilots TOPGUN has ever produced.”

When you did turn around, you smirked at the man you saw. Out of the corner of your eye, you watched Hangman’s face drop as he pinched his nose and turned around. “What he has to teach you may very well mean the difference between life and death.” You noticed both Coyote and Payback’s reactions as he walked past them.

“I give you, Captain Pete Mitchell. Call sign: ‘Maverick’.” You smiled a little, having admired his flying for quite some time, but you dropped it when you saw the disdain on Rooster’s face. You didn’t quite understand their history, but you knew it didn’t end well.

Maverick walked up to the podium and smiled, nodding to Hangman and Payback, “Good morning.” They both nodded back awkwardly, a little embarrassed. He scanned his eyes and found Rooster, but Bradley avoided eye contact and looked away.

Pete held back a sigh and continued, holding up a book, “The F-18 NATOPS. Contains everything they want you to know about your aircraft.” You inhaled, furrowing your brow as you wondered where he was going with this. “I’m assuming you know the book inside and out.”

“Damn right.” “Yeah.” “You got it.” “Damn straight.”

Maverick nodded and looked around, promptly throwing the book in the trash.

You let out an amused huff and glanced back at Omaha to see his mouth opened a little in shock. You turned back and made eye contact with Mav. “So does your enemy.”

He glanced around again. “But what the enemy doesn’t know is your limits. I intend to find them, test them, push beyond.” Rooster rolled his eyes beside you.

“Today we’ll start with what you only think you know.” He looked at your table, glancing from you to Rooster, “You show me what you’re made of.”

Whoever wasn’t flying was in the ready room.

“Good morning, aviators. This is your captain speaking.” You chuckled and rolled your eyes. “Welcome to basic fighter maneuvers. As briefed, today’s exercise is dogfighting. Guns only, no missiles. We do not go below the hard deck of 5,000 feet. Working as a team, you have to shoot me down, or else.”

Payback challenged him, “Or else what, sir?” “Or else I shoot back.” You let out a low whistle and a chuckle. “If I shoot either one of you down, you both lose.”

Bob’s eyes were a little wider as he looked up at Phoenix then to you. “This guy needs an ego check,” Hangman said from his spot on the couch while twirling a model plane in his hand. You scoffed and shoved his shoulder, “Said the guy who needs an ego check.” “I heard that.” “Good, I wanted you to.”

“What do you say we put some skin in the game?” Payback challenge again. “Oh no, what do you have planned this time?” You mumbled as you stood next to Bob, leaning with one arm on his shoulder.

“What do you have in mind?” Mav asked. “Whoever gets shot down first has to do 200 hundred push ups.” “Guys,” Rooster chimed in. “That’s a lot of push-ups.” “They don’t call it an exercise for nothin’, sir.” “You got yourselves a deal gentlemen.”

Everyone in the room groaned. “Seriously Payback!?”

You shrugged, “That’s not that bad.” Harvard scoffed, rolling his eyes playfully at you, “Shut up, Rogers.”

When it was your turn, you were in the air with Phoenix and Bob.

“So, you two seemed pretty friendly at the Hard Deck last night?” “We went to the Academy together and then flight school right after that,” you explained, turning to try and find Maverick. “We’re basically best friends,” Bob piped up from the backseat. “‘Basically’, you wound me Bob. You truly wound me.” All of you laughed.

“Bob, you see him?” “Not-” “Shit!” Maverick came up and split you and Phoenix. “Fights on!”

You and Phoenix were engaged with Maverick. Eventually you broke from Phoenix to get the shot.

“Star, get him off me!” “Where’s your wingman, Phoenix?” Maverick chimed in.

You had a plan but couldn’t exactly communicate with her without Maverick hearing you. “Phoenix, when I give the signal break left!” “Got it.”

You took a deep breath and flew under Mav’s left wing. “Come on Star, don’t leave your wingman! Where’d you go?” “On your left,” you smirked and sped in front of him. “Now Phoenix!” She quickly broke off and Mav lost her.

“Effective, but you know that cost Rooster right?” “Oh, I’m aware. But I’m also aware of what cost Hangman.” You kept climbing in altitude, right in the light of the sun. Mav knew what you were doing but humored you anyway. “You think you can pull what I pulled on him, on me?” You hummed, “Not exactly, sir.”

Mav shook his head as he got tone, “That’s t-” He was cut off by his own tone going off. “What?” “That’s a kill, sir.” Phoenix chimed in. Mav sighed as you all flew back to the tarmac.

“Who’s idea was that?” “Star’s, sir,” Bob said, pride in his voice. Maverick turned to you, and you gave him an assured smirk. “See me on the ground, Lieutenant.”

And that’s exactly what you did.

Once your plane landed, Phoenix and Bob gave you pats on the shoulder. “Hey, that was amazing. Hopefully the Captain’s not too hard on you.” You shrugged, “Nothing I won’t be used to.” You gave them a pat on the back and they went inside.

“Lieutenant Rogers!” You turned to see Maverick and Hondo walking toward you. “Yes, sir.” “That was some damn good flying up there.” You nodded, trying to hide the smile on your face, “Thank you, sir.” “And that was a pretty good plan… but it got you killed.” You tilted your head, “We got you though, didn’t we?” “But you put yourself in the line of fire, Star.” “Is it not a dogfight, sir?”

The group in the ready room watched your conversation with Mav from the window. Seeing you stand toe-to-toe with your instructor.

They could tell you were a Rogers, there was no doubt. It was in the way you held yourself, standing your ground and shameless in your actions. “My girlfriend is such a badass,” Omaha said proudly. Hangman shook his head, “She’s so much like him…”

“Star, you sacrificed yourself-” “And I would do it again, sir.” Mav clenched his jaw, he was also seeing what the rest of the squad was, your father.

“Is that all, Captain?” He just nodded and walked away, leaving you with Hondo.

“I think he’s supposed to push your limits, Lieutenant,” he chuckled as you got down to do your push-ups. “Who says I have limits?” “Everyone’s got their limits, Rogers. Even you.” You just shrugged and started your push-ups.

“That’s 200!” You sighed and sat back on your heels. “Star, you barely broke a sweat! That’s so not fair!” Halo shouted, chuckling at the end. “Yeah, 200 hundred is nothing for her!” Coyote agreed. Omaha laughed and held a hand out to you to help you up. You just shook your head and swatted it away, smirk on your face. “I’ll do another 200 hundred, make it fair.” “Babe, you don’t have to do that.” “Yeah, Star, we’re just messing with you.”

Hondo just rolled his eyes, “Come on, Star, get up. You’re up soon with Payback and Fanboy.” You sighed and took Omaha’s still outstretched hand, letting him pull you up. You patted their backs, “Good luck.”

***** *two days later*

“So, Rooster? Mind if I ask you a personal question?” You rolled your eyes, arms crossed as you leaned on the window. “Would it matter if I did?” “So what’s the story with you and Maverick? It seems like he’s got you a little rattled.”

You groaned, “God, Jake, don’t start.”

“That’s none of your business. Now where the hell is he?” “Been here the whole time.” “Holy shit…” “You see me now? Come on, let’s get it over with.” “Fight’s on!” “What is with these two?”

You couldn’t see what the were doing, but based on the heavy breathing it was something stupid.

You pushed off the window sill and moved over to the radio, leaning back onto the foosball table.

“All right, you put us here. How you gonna get yourself out?” “You can bail out anytime!” Your breath hitched, if they didn’t stop soon it wouldn’t be pretty. “How low you wanna go, Rooster?” “I can go as low as you sir, and that’s saying something!”

You shook your head, “Their egos are gonna get them killed.”

“What’s past is past. For both of us!” “You’d like to believe that, wouldn’t you?”

Hangman chimed in, “Hard deck is 5,000 feet, fellas. You are running out of room!” You stood up straighter. “Come on, get out of it Rooster,” you mumbled. “Your strategy is about to run us into the ground. What’s your move?”

Your heart was beating so fast that you were sure everyone could hear it.

Finally, they got out of the cobra maneuver.

“Now you got it. Don’t think, just do.” “Come on, Rooster, you got him! Drop down and take the shot!”

You sucked in a breath, hoping that someone could finally beat Maverick with both planes in the air. “It’s too low!” You groaned and ran a hand down your face. “Too late. You had your chance.” It was quiet for a moment before the tone was heard.

“Damn it, Rooster.” “That’s a kill. Knock it off.” “Damn it!” “Same ol’ Rooster.” “Go see Hondo about your push-ups.” You huffed, rolling your eyes as you walked away.

You were done for the day after that stunt and you decided to go to the gym.

“Star! Y/N, hey!”

You sharply turned, “What?” Phoenix held her hands up, “Woah, sorry.” You sighed and rolled your shoulders. “No, I’m sorry. What’s up?” “I just wanted to check on you, you looked a little upset.” You gave her a small smile, “Thanks, Phoenix. But I’ll be fine, Rooster’s stunt just upset me.” She nodded, “Yeah, me too.” You sighed and gestured behind you, “I’m gonna change and then hit the gym, I could use a spotter.” She smiled and nodded, following you.

Today you would actually be working on the practice course for the mission at hand.

“Time is your greatest enemy.” He turned to the board, “Phase one of the mission will be a low level ingress attacking in two plane teams. You’ll fly along this narrow canyon to your target. Radar-guided surface-to-air missiles defend the area. These SAMs, they’re lethal. But they were designed to defend the skies above, not the canyon below.” You tensed in your seat beside Hangman. “That’s because the enemy knows no one is insane enough to try and fly below them,” Rooster acknowledged.

Hangman glanced down at you, smirking a little bit. Mainly because you were insane enough to fly through a narrow canyon, you had done it before. But at that time you were alone.

Maverick turned and looked at Rooster, “That’s exactly what I’m gonna train you to do.”

He looked at everyone, “On the day, your altitude will be 100 feet maximum. You exceed this… radar will spot you and you’re dead. Your air speed will be 660 knots minimum.”

You side-eyed Hangman as he straightened in his seat, smirking a little and folding his hands together. You could already tell he had a plan and you weren’t sure you liked it.

“Time to target: two and half minutes. That’s because fifth-generation fighters wait at an airbase nearby. In a head to head with these planes in your F-18s, you’re dead.”

There was something in his voice you recognized, fear.

“That’s why you need to get in, hit your target, and be gone before these planes even have a chance of catching you. This makes time your great adversary.”

As Maverick began to explain the training, your fingers twitched in both anticipation and worry.

“You’ll fly a route in your nav system that simulates the canyon. The faster you navigate this canyon, the harder it’ll be to stay under the radar of these enemy SAMs. The tighter the turns, the more intensely the force of gravity on your body multiplies… compressing your lungs, forcing the blood from your brain… impairing your judgment and reaction time. So for today’s lesson we’re gonna take it easy on you. Max ceiling: 300 feet. Time to target: three minutes. Good luck.”

You pinched your nose as you watched the replay of your run with Omaha and Halo. You were better than that.

“Why are you dead?” He was looking at you, brows raised. You sighed and looked up at him, “I was going too fast, turn was too tight.”

Mav crossed his arms. “You’ve flown a canyon tighter than this one-” You nodded, jaw clenched, “Yes, sir.” “So, why are you dead?” “I made a mistake, sir.”

He watched your hand flex as you looked down. “A mistake that should have gotten you all killed,” Mav looked back at Omaha and Halo before back at you.

“You’re wingman lived, but not you. Why?” Omaha spoke up, “She communicated, sir. Warned us to decrease speed, she knew she wasn’t gonna make the turn but she didn’t have time to slow down herself.”

It actually didn’t take Maverick long to get a read on you. He knew you were a sacrificer, that you were the one to lay on the wire.

It both impressed and terrified Maverick at how okay you were with the idea of dying. He honestly couldn’t really understand why you were that way, not until now.

When Omaha, your boyfriend, told him why he and Halo were alive because you did communicate and made sure they had time to save themselves rather than save yourself, he really put the pieces together. The reason why in the dogfighting exercise you made yourself the bait if it had to come down to it.

It was because you couldn’t bear the thought of someone dying when you had the opportunity to save them. Call it a hero complex but it was true, you were your father through and through.

He looked at you and he wanted to say something, but saying it in front of everyone probably wasn’t the best idea. “Can I talk to you, Lieutenant? Alone.” You nodded, “Yes, sir.”

You both walked out into the hall. “Why are you so keen on saving everyone but yourself?” You furrowed your brow, “I’m not sure I follow, sir.” “Star, you’ve barely made it out of an exercise alive. You’re sacrificing yourself. Do you want your teammates to face your family at a funeral, knowing that it should have been them?” He said that last part breathlessly, and you picked up on it.

“My family is gone, Captain. I would rather them come home alive, than have to come home and face their devastated families knowing that I could have done more,” tears stung the back of your eyes and you looked away from him.

Maverick knew that look.

You had already been through it before, facing a family with nothing but guilt and regret.

He sighed, “Your father would be proud of you.” You looked back at him, letting out a breath and a hushed, “Thank you, sir.”

“But I need you to worry about yourself just as much as you worry about everyone else in there. I don’t think Captain Rogers wants to see you so soon.” You cleared your throat and nodded, “Yes, sir.”

****** *Later*

You glanced at Rooster’s face as you held him back, “Rooster! Bradshaw!”

He was furious, but his strength didn’t match yours.

Hangman step up into his face, “He’s not ready for this mission.” He looked at Maverick, “You know I’m right.”

You caught his eye as he left and your blood boiled.

You looked at Rooster. “Hey, hey, he’s just being an ass.” Rooster shook in anger under your hands and shook you off before stomping away after being dismissed.

“Hangman, that was way out of line!” You marched into the locker room, eyes blazing.

“I wasn’t wrong,” he turned around, smirking like he did nothing wrong. You got up in his face, “That was unfair, and just flat out cruel, Jake.” “He needs to let go of the past. It’s gonna get him killed. Every time he’s in the air, he is flying against a ghost. A ghost not even you can save him from.”

You knew he was right, Rooster needed to settle whatever this was he had with Maverick. But Rooster wasn’t the only one that was hanging on to the past.
