To My Love (6)

Dear Love,

I wake up to a sky blazed with tangerine and paprika streaks with the rest of buildings quaking to and fro—oh! These are just my tears.

Among the leaves I have collected, I select one of them. It is shaped like two human palms asking for the rain. I wonder if your hands are of the same size. But these leaves I collected are those I found lying on the road; fearing they might break their spine by some road-rollers, I bring them home because they remind me of myself, detached from its source of life. It is sad that they will lose their green charm and be turned to ashes. How many leaves are forgotten without being noticed, I wonder.

Love, my pen overflowed today, maybe, even wept as it authored my melancholy. I return to my desk, its legs sway, unable to bear the heavy pages. And the leaves do not leave the desk, maybe, there's some life left in it as it was once a tree too?

Tonight, I will now sit by the river scraping the ridges of the bank in the shape of "U" so that I receive, hopefully, a fish from the city of your residence.

أمَّا قبل .. فلا تُكَحِّلي عينيك أبدًا .. ولا تقرئي الشعر علنًا .. ولا تضحكي أمام غريب .. ولا تُطيلي الصمت ولا تُكثري الكلام .. وإياكِ ثم إياكِ أن تكوني جميلة هكذا .. !

أمَّا بعد .. فـأنـا لا أغـار عليكِ أبـدًا .

فأجابته ..

أمَّا قبل .. فـإنِّي أحمدُ اللَّه عليكَ دائمًا وأبدًا وأقول لكَ ما الكحل في عيني إلا أنت .. وما قرأت الشعر يومًا إلَّا لـك .. وما يكون الضحكُ في غيابك ! وما معنى الحماس والجنون إذا لم تشاركني إياه ! وما جمال النقاش والاختلاف إلا معك !وهل يكون الصمت شيئًا إلا في حَرم عينيك ! وما نفع الكلام إذا لم تكن أنت المُخاطب ! وهل أكون جميلةً هكذا إلا في عينيك .. ؟

أمَّا بعد .. فأنا أعلمُ أنكَ لا تغار عليَّ أبدا .

To My Love (5)

Dear Love,

The wind blows me away like a boat without its oars. I care not where it takes me but would like to be taken to you, drifting into your arms.

As I write this letter, I deceive my heart. Tricking my mind into thinking that you read the letters in my dreams, I stain my page with tears the way a piece of newspaper lies on the cold earth, being trampled to tears. But what can I do if the love I dream to see in your eyes for me is never realised? Am I to dream on, or stop at once?

My fingers are peppered with blue ink, for I didn't realise that I had already completed the poem. I wrote and wrote and wrote 'til I filled the page and emptied my heart. The red ink of love is refilled and I write again endlessly about you. Do not read the blotched pages, for there you'll find my imperfections. I can show them to you, but you'll find them so sad that you won't be able to stop your sobs.

Here, I lull my pen to sleep, while I stare at the open sky finding your face among the stars.
