I'm realizing why I kind of prefer the Jonny-written episodes (and Alex too so far) to the guest-written episodes. Jonny horror? It's creepy. It's gross. It sends a shiver up your spine while you're listening and makes you go 'well that was fucked up' when it ends.

And it's fun. It makes me like being scared, and then I can put it aside and go to sleep afterward.

The guest writers have been going for the fucking throat. I'm scared to turn off my light after those episodes, let alone sleep. It's the kind of horror that makes me remember why I'm not, in general, a horror person.

And don't get me wrong, I'm still enjoying those episodes. They're interesting stories and I like the way they've been written and told. But I'm scared of needles, and Mr. Needles himself was an absolute delight to meet. I've never been scared of violins before, but I couldn't close my eyes for three hours after that episode because every time I did adrenaline would shoot through me at the idea of what was lurking in the darkness.

This ramble is going nowhere but I've seen a few other people saying Protocol is scaring them more than Archives did so I thought folks might relate.

When you're listening to a voice note from a friend talking about how their mental health has been lately, pause. Pause if you don't have the headspace or energy to be compassionate. Come back later.

When your leg has a muscle pull and you can't meet your daily step goal, pause. Instead of feeling like you can't get fitter and go down the negative self talk path, pause. Rest. Come back later.

When you are scrolling on social media and you start to compare, pause. You don't need to feel shitty about everything you aren't doing because your time and energy is limited and there are choices to be made. Keep your phone away. Focus on the choices you've made. Come back later (or don't).

When you are eating a dish you really like and you want to take a second serving, pause. Check in with your body, keep aside the cravings of your mind. Pause, if you are feeling full. Come back later to have the leftovers the next day or next meal.

When you are in the middle of an argument or difficult conversation with your friend, pause. Pause if both of you have said what you wanted to and now there is silence and it feels like you don't know where to go from here. Pause, because there's nothing else you can do right now but sleep on it. Speak the next day, you still love them. Come back to that conversation when there is more to add. But for now pause instead of saying things that are unnecessary.

When life feels like too much, leave everything. Go and lie down on thr cool marble floor with your hands and legs spread out. Take off your glasses, turn off the lights, draw the curtains. Close your eyes. Pause. You will know when to get back up and resume.

Whether it’s a hand on his thigh, a thumb running over the back of his hand, or sokka’s fingers latched around his wrist when they’re walking; whether it’s a soft kiss on his cheek, his forehead, the nape of his neck, the inside of his knee; whether it’s their hands intertwining out of sheer habit; whether it’s the soothing feeling of sokka’s fingers gently scratching his scalp when zuko lays his head in sokka’s lap; whether it’s sokka tenderly cradling zuko’s face with overwhelming tenderness every chance he gets, because he knows that’s zuko’s absolute favourite; whether it’s sokka kissing the top of his head goodnight when zuko’s laying on his chest, caressing zuko’s cheekbone with a lazy thumb until his breath evens out and he’s asleep and safe in sokka’s warmth.

It’s the casual intimacy that always gets to zuko and reminds him hourly of just how much he adores and trusts sokka. It’s the physical manifestation of giving and receiving the kind of love he never thought he’d be able to experience. It’s the mute reassurance sokka feels the same exact way about him.
