Why the “They’re Out Of Their Honeymoon Phase” argument doesn’t work (all that much)

So one of the popular arguments against the “Chaggie doesn’t have chemistry” critiques is that “They’re pass their honey moon phase.” And for a bit I believed in that sentiment. But the more I thought about it, the more I felt like that argument is kinda…dated? Because Moxxie and Mille are actually married and they had an actual “honeymoon” phase and yet they’re still very affectionate one year later.

My problem with this is that there shouldn’t be a set amount how affectionate a couple should be after a set period of time. Both M&M and Chaggie are Vaild couples. Chaggie strikes me as a couple that A. Are too busy to really be affectionate in public or B. Are a couple that don’t like to really PDA. Both are valid reasons as to why they aren’t as “passionate” with one another as M&M (or OzzFizz for that matter)

And I know what some of you Chaggie critics are going to say. “But how are we going to be convinced they are a couple if they don’t do couple-ly things. That isn’t entertaining.”

Well, they could keep doing what they’re doing now “building off of each other during work” while flirting a little. That way they still keep a low PDA while still doing “couplely” things (although they do hold hands a lot in public and Vaggie isn’t afraid to call Charlie petnames in public sooo…take that with what you will).

But honestly, in an ideal world, Chaggie shouldn’t have to prove themselves as a couple. People should just take them saying “yeah, we’re a couple” and just leave it. Because the reality is, low PDA couples exist in real life and I’ve seen a lot of couples feel seen by Chaggie because they are also low PDA. I think it’s important to showcase different types of couples. Couples that aren’t raunchy like M&M, couples that don’t show a lot of PDA like Chaggie, couples that are pretty raunchy in public like OzzFizz.

(And sometimes, couples may seems like they’re dating their “best friend” because sometimes…that’s what it is, a lot of couples had to be friends at some point, that’s how they work well with each other. This doesn’t add much to my over all argument. I just wanted to take a jab at the “they seem more like friends” argument)

So what does all of this mean? I think we should replace the “they’re out of their honeymoon phase” and replace it with “they’re just a couple that doesn’t like showing a lot of PDA and that’s okay.”

A small but still poignant Chaggie moment

Something I noticed in the "Dad Beat Dad" episode, as seen in the above gif -

When Charlie is asked by her father about her other friends, Charlie's first one to introduce is Vaggie, her girlfriend. She specifically refers to Vaggie as such but doesn't add that the latter is also the manager and I don't think it was done out of spite but just how much that between being her girlfriend and Hotel manager, Charlie is more grateful towards the former to an extent.

Charlie literally pulls Vaggie to meet her father. It's cute and so in-character for someone as expressive as Charlie.

How Charlie wraps one hand around Vaggie's arm and then gently holds the latter's opposite hand. It's quick and small but speaks volume to Charlie's comfort with Vaggie.

Just... how soft Charlie's voice gets when she refers to Vaggie as her girlfriend couples with the equally soft looks exchanged between them both.

I also just have to talk about this GIF from the training scene because it gets me every single time. It’s different from the other comfort scenes we’ve seen so far (the hug in 1×03, the “Can you feel my hand?” in Shannon’s room, and the smile in the back of the van) because Ava is just stunned.

She was starting to panic inside the wall, begging for Beatrice to “bring [her] out.” Then, when it seems she’s gotten stuck, Ava hits the ground hard and lies hunkered down on her elbows, eyes closed and just trying to catch her breath. A moment later, Beatrice’s hands are on her shoulders and Ava flinches.

Given the way Frances abused and manhandled her in the orphanage, Ava is likely expecting something similar here – for Beatrice to haul her upright and tell her to try again (or worse, lecture her on her performance). But then Beatrice is cupping her face like a child’s, comforting her, soothing her. “It’s okay,” she says. “You did it.”

And Ava just looks up at her in astonishment, like she doesn’t know what she’s seeing. She blinks, processing, as Beatrice strokes her hair, and it’s like you can see the fear leave her eyes.

Because in those words, in that gesture, is “I’ve got you”, “You’re safe”, and “You can trust me.” It’s an affirmation of faith given and faith proven – of Beatrice’s trust in Ava’s success and Ava’s trust in Bea to see her through.

“Thank you,” Ava breathes.

It’s the only thing she can say because Beatrice has come to her aid again, is taking care of her again, and that feeling is still so new and strange, and overwhelming, but it’s also the tenderest thing in the world.

Ava’s gotten a glimpse of Beatrice’s combat skills – she knows the damage she’s capable of inflicting – but in the cradle of Beatrice’s hands is the safest she’s ever been.

Beatrice will not hurt her.

CherriSnake, as a couple, most likely wasn't in the plans, if you only saw the pilot, but honestly, I personally really enjoyed their dynamic in the show, regardless.

There's a reason why people shipped Cherri Bomb and Sir Pentious all these years: rivals to lovers is always a win. Plus, the confident, spunky powerhouse and the battle oriented, dorky edgelord? It really made sense!

So let's talk about them in the series proper!

Cherri Bomb was never against the idea of dating Sir Pentious. Maybe unimpressed by his awkward attempts, but never really rebuffed them.

If anything she kinda pokes fun at him for trying so hard with her: you say you're my arch nemesis, but then you try to flirt with me?

What, YOU want to make sex with me? Care to explain why?

They've been rivals for years by now, Cherri KNOWS Pentious tends to put up a front to impress, and most likely would've given him a chance if he had the confidence to be true about his intentions.

Sadly, this is Sir Pentious we're talking about: a very insecure man who struggles with socializing and pleasing others. So he blunders his own attempts at flirting to avoid being rejected by buying everyone drinks or wanting to have sex with everyone.

Speaking of that, Sir Pentious, of all people, wanting to have sex? It's really not him, it's not something he'd do under normal circumstances, but he's drunk, all his previous attempts have failed, so he might as well be bold. But even then you can tell by the way he says "Do a sex with me." that he has NO idea what he's talking about.

And she's quick to call him out. Again, not with annoyance but with humor.

Sir Pentious was completely out of his element here, and, being the insecure man he is, instead of going with his strengths (which we're going to talk about in a minute), he went for what HE believed Cherri wanted, and he payed the price: she wasn't impressed, he lost his chance.

Also, I totally believe that the reason behind his struggles to come to terms with his crush is also linked to the fact that... he's a man of science, war and machines! He just can't get a crush, it doesn't work like that! So of course he'd try to mask it!

Of course he engages with Cherri Bomb: she's his arch nemesis! Nothing more! He would never buy drinks for her specifically! ...except nobody will ever buy his lie, and he wouldn't notice how obvious he is.

Next time, we see Pentious trying, and fail once again, to confess to Cherri, but something has changed. He talked to Charlie about it. And while we don't see WHAT they've said to each other, we know for a fact that Charlie totally encouraged him to be himself and confess his feelings.

Heck, if you watch closely, Vaggie even puts a hand on Pentious' own as if to wish him good luck! She's really come to trust him, aw!

And this time, while Sir Pentious still is too nervous to fully confess his feelings, he still goes about it by actually sticking to his strengths, the reason why he fell for Cherri in the first place.

Sir Pentious is an inventor, a warrior, he works with machines. He has engaged in turf wars against Cherri for years and by now he knows her: she's destructive, unpredictable, and unstoppable. She most likely often beat him too, but both gave their all in the battle. And Sir Pentious definitely was impressed by that.

He's not blind, of course he finds Cherri pretty (and let's face it, she is!). But that's the reason he fell for her, something on his league he could recognize and actively engage in: her prowess in battle, her creativity with her explosives, and her determination. And he fully told her that, with clear admiration in his voice.

And this time, Cherri, while still a bit confused on how he's still being awkward about it, this time shows a positive response: she thanks him, she smiles, she genuinely appreciates his compliments.

Reminder that Cherri is much more upfront about, uhm, going out with people. She has slept around, did quick things, and if lore is still the same for her, her love life wasn't a happy one. She's used to have people wanting her for her body, or having surface level attraction to her.

But this is her long time rival, the one man she often faced in turf wars, the edgelord who always put up a front of a grandiose villain when he really was an awkward nerd from the Victorian times that was easy to rattle. And maybe she didn't develop feelings for him the same way he did for her, but it's clear she never held animosity against him. She does care for this lovable loser, deep down, so his compliments are genuinely appreciated.

So when the battle begins, and Adam has started showing the big guns, Sir Pentious gives a quick glance at his blimp, knowing what has to be done, and with the feeling there's a high chance he won't make it.

And so he does the one thing he's always been afraid to do. It's now or never: if he has to go down, he shall do it with no regrets. To heck with fears and insecurities: he loves Cherri, and this time he will show it the way he knows how.

An awkward but completely sweet kiss in the middle of the battle, as her bomb goes off in the background. A gesture that REALLY represents their bond.

Sadly it's short lived. Sir Pentious finally declares his love and runs away to save the day, but still emotional about what happened: the only request he has for her before the deed is simply to remember him.

And I'm positive Cherri will definitely remember this. Him, the kiss, the battle. Everything.

I love this gentle moment between Maomao and Jinshi: it's peaceful and quiet, but most importantly it's comfortable. There's none of the unease or disgruntlement Maomao usually shows around Jinshi nor any of Jinshi's flirty antics and fake smiles. It's just two young adults having a normal conversation and enjoying the evening.

I also love how their camaraderie and their comfort around the other show in the way Maomao teases Jinshi about missing and regrowing finger tips as well as Jinshi freaking out over Maomao's wound (while she herself is totally nonplussed by it). It's a nice change to their usual cat and dog bug relationship and goes to show how close they've gotten since the start of the series

this will always be the best monologue in the entire show to me.

finn and noah’s acting was absolutely phenomenal and you could tell they poured their hearts into this scene. will didn’t even say a word but you could feel everything he felt just by looking at his teary eyes and the way his little face was trembling. and i loved how it was completely silent during the entire scene and it was only about them. you could only hear their voices and see their faces. nothing else was getting in the way. it was so simple yet so beautiful.

mike was the only person aside from joyce and jonathan to try to speak to him and i found it so beautiful that it was the 3 most important people to him. it wasn’t forced or expected either. it was so real and genuine. his mother helped him, his brother helped him and his best friend and the boy he’s in love with helped him. the 3 people that have always made will feel loved and accepted. this is what he needed more than anything.

and then there’s the actual memory that mike chose; the day they first met in kindergarten and became friends. this was the happiest memory for both of them and their lives changed in the best way possible because of this. it was the start of their journey together. they were both all alone before they found each other and they were each other’s first friend which is so special and beautiful. and what makes it even more genuine is that mike wasn’t pressured to say any of this. no one told him what to say or pushed him to be there. he chose to stay by will’s side throughout all of season 2 and he said those words because his best friend needed his help and that memory meant a lot to both of them.

this is the mike and will that mean so much to me. they’ve known each other for most of their lives and they have such a beautiful and special relationship. they share the same interests, they’ve experienced the same struggles and they can always be themselves around each other. that is the type of relationship everyone deserves. and regardless of what the writers decide to do with them in season 5, i hope that they can always be close no matter what.

The Deep Significance that Vaggie has in Charlie's Heart

As the title of the post suggests, I don't know if many fans understand how truly significant Vaggie was/is to Charlie. And I hope, the importance gets expanded on in Season 2. The first (and above) gif shows how the couple first met - Charlie rescuing a recently abandoned/fallen Vaggie and the latter returning a grateful and genuine smile. And despite being visibly disheveled and having a gouged out eye, Charlie can't help but be romantically flustered. And just a short moment, the duo have impacted each other before even spending time with one another.

The look on Charlie's face is probably the most scared she's looked - Yes, she's been stressed and scared; but she's always been able to bounce back, or least, need a moment to think, but those moments of fear can't compare to the ones Charlie is having right now upon learning Vaggie's secret. She's not only scared but distraught. Prior to the reveal, Charlie was nothing but energetic, defiant to the higher ups of Heaven, especially Adam and Lute; heck, she wasn't even hurt when she learned that not even the higher ups know how a soul goes to Heaven or Hell. But when Vaggie's lie/secret is revealed to her? She's shocked, scared, confused, and distraught. There's no more fight left in her; no more fight to argue for her cause, nothing. All she can think about in this moment is the secret her Vaggie has been keeping from her.

Like how Charlie's scared face differed from her previous ones, it's also the same but how her anger at Vaggie differs from her other moments of anger. She could be comically furious or genuinely enraged which came with her demon horns and fangs. And prior to confronting Vaggie here, she was emotionally incensed at Alastor's taunting. But, when she sees Vaggie here in this moment, right after learning Vaggie's lie? All of her anger becomes ice cold. There's no emotion or expression; and yet, ironically, the viewer (and Vaggie), can just feel Charlie's immense anger at her girlfriend. In the above screenshot, after Vaggie voices her surprise that Exorcist Angels can be harmed by demons, Charlie curtly remarks if Vaggie did know, would she tell her, which obviously surprise and hurts Vaggie; Charlie's remark comes from a place of hurt at Vaggie's secrecy but still that's gotta hurt Vaggie given how loyal she's been towards Charlie's dream. And the below gif has Charlie give another cold look to Vaggie while coldly asking if she was with her and Alastor. But also, before dawning the icy glare, Charlie has a brief expression of...something; I can't fully describe but I say emotion (?). Like she briefly wants to express her hurt to Vaggie but puts on the cold demeanor as they have their respective duties to do and Charlie is not ready to talk yet. Getting back to my original point, Charlie's anger at Vaggie isn't one filled with emotions, expressions, or demon powers - it's one of tranquil fury, coldness, and emotional distance.

In stark contrast to her earlier stoic fury when with Vaggie, Charlie is MUCH more open and emotional about her anger at her girlfriend's lie when talking to Alastor and Rosie. Now, remember - Charlie is dealing with Heaven not listening to her, them not even knowing how a soul goes there or Hell, Adam targeting the Hotel first, and now having to recruit extra people to fight. So, she has a LOT on her plate but what is her mind truly bothered by at this point? Having to come to grips with Vaggie's lie about her origins. She's hurt at the idea that Vaggie didn't trust her; hurt at how she shared EVERYTHING, Vaggie held back; confused and angry over why Vaggie felt she couldn't tell her. All the other hard stuff is hard to deal with, but she can deal with as long as Vaggie is by her side. And right now, Charlie is too hurt to be comforted by Vaggie.

To summarize, Vaggie's presence is DEEPLY important to Charlie. Vaggie was the first person in all of Hell to support her; before her father, before the friends they would eventually make, before Emily, before Heaven; and while realistic, Vaggie never tried to damper Charlie's optimism. This was something Charlie needed by the time they met, as she was already estranged from her father and her mother had went missing. I think this aspect may be explored in Season, or at least, hope so. I mean, look at how calm and relaxed Charlie becomes when Vaggie gently strokes her face.

In other words, Vaggie is Charlie's guardian angel.

911 7x04 spoilers

this is a really smart way to introduce the potential of buddie to non-shippers (regular viewers, non-fandom people, etc)

since they've moved to abc, i've been keeping in mind that they want to introduce the show to new viewers. buddie going canon in this ep would have been life-changing to people who've been watching since season 2, those who've been through the grocery divorce era and the clawing through mud and the shooting and the will and the three minutes and seventeen seconds. but if i just started watching s7, having them get together might not have made as much sense/impact, esp since the previous episodes weren't much focused on them (save ep 1 maybe?).

so, storytelling. it'd be very obvious to any viewer that buck was jealous over eddie in this episode, even if it wasn't clear to mr. i misunderstood the assignment. (and it was why the subversion of expectations w tommy and that kiss was very effective)

but buck getting to explore his sexuality and dating other men (and eddie possibly getting jealous) turns up the tension. it leans into the foundations of their relationship, which is definitively a slow burn. now, new and old viewers alike will get to see that chemistry unfold and fully enjoy how it plays out.

with bi buck being canon, we will be getting buddie as well, esp w s8 in the pipeline. now is the best time to let it develop as fully as it needs to instead of having a rushed moment just for the sake of finally making it canon.

Why I Love Reylo (Pt.2)

One of my other favorite parts of this couple is that they are atypically gender reversed. It’s one of the many reasons this ship is so intriguing and unique compared to others. Let me explain. Typically in most hetero romances the man is the abrasive, closed off one at first and is generally a prickly little shit. While the girl is typically softer, a little more compassionate and open minded. This not the case with Rey and Kylo.

Rey’s first interaction with Kylo is shooting a blaster at him multiple times in succession. Granted she does have a Force vision of Kylo at Maz’s which makes her justifiably hostile and afraid of him. During the interrogation scene Kylo reads her mind and speaks her thoughts out loud: she wants to kill him. Rey calls him a creature in a mask and angrily tells him to get out of her head. And then proceeds to spit Kylo’s greatest fear back in his face with such venom. I love how she snarls: “You. You’re afraid.”

Kylo on the other hand only defends himself from her blasts and force stops her from shooting any further. He gently says: “The girl I’ve heard so much about.” Kylo easily could have dragged her away or thrown her into the hands of the troopers beside him—but instead he makes Rey sleep and scoops her up into his arms bridal style. In the interrogation room Kylo sees Rey’s fear and says she’s his guest. He takes off his mask. Then explains things calmly—never raising his voice above a murmur. The curiosity about her is strong as Kylo probes her mind and the responses to what he finds there are emotional. I love so much how he says “Don’t be afraid, I feel it too.” It just feels so incredibly kind considering the circumstances—like that was the first little glimpse of Ben we got.

The shift that happens when Rey uses the force back on Kylo is what really sets the tone for the rest of their relationship. Rey attacks and responds negatively—Kylo gently deflects and tries to connect. If you watch throughout the rest of the films this dynamic doesn’t really change. Almost all of their force bonds in TLJ are similar: Rey being barbarous and Kylo being benign. A majority of their saber fights are like this too—Kylo plays defense, is hesitant to pull out his saber multiple times or looks like he’s doesn’t want to fight her period.

See what I mean?! Rey is hostile and prickly—Kylo is open minded and gentle.

The other gender swapped aspect is that in a way Kylo is the damsel of this pairing. He’s trapped far away, lonely and miserable, in a figurative tower. Rey fights Luke for his cause and goes to rescue and save him if she can. But I also see Kylo as an emotional damsel too. He’s so lost, and hurt and twisted. Rey offers him a way back—she’s the only one who can—and in the long run is the very reason he is able to become Ben Solo again. But it’s when Rey lets her guard down and mellows her prejudice that their relationship flourishes. Kylo/Ben is already ready and waiting to love and be loved…

Man, this pairing is complex and fun to analyze!
