I agree that kataang should have been a thing after the invadion.

But i also dont understand why zutarians ignore that the first thing katara did after the invasion failed was to hug him and stay very proudly next to him when he thanked everyone for being brave and participating in the invasion. In the western air temple they also were very relaxed and sit next to each other.

If katara was grossed out by aang and his kiss she would keep her distance and not sit next to him.

Even after their ember island fight katara reassures him he doesn't have to fight the fire lord alone, they stay next to each other in the group hug and when zuko teaches aang how to redirect lightning he leaved them alone and they don't feel akward at all.

It is ridicolous how some people ignore the canon plot

There's nothing zutarians like more than ignoring/twisting Katara's consistent behavior around Aang to pretend she secretly hated, feared, and was grossed out and annoyed by him.

Meanwhile they go "She totally didn't mean it when she said she'd end Zuko if he stepped out of line again, it was just 'sexual tension', you sillies"

Reasons why Kataang is a terrible ship:

1- They support each other

2- Aang always bring the best of Katara and support her in their worst times.

3- Katara always stay Aang side to help him.

4- They understand each other.

5- They have a healthy relationship

6- They blush each other when they think about kiss each other

7- They are the best dancers

8- Katara trust in Aang

9- Aang trust and show respect for Katara call her “Sifu Katara”

10- And they love each others.

That is the reasons why Kataang is a terrible ship.

Unpopular opinion if Zuko wasn’t attractive Zutara wouldn’t be as popular as it is. There I said it. Zuko and Katara would be horrible together, aesthetically sure whatever but actually no.

Zuko who is known for his temper and impulsive tendencies with Katara who is just as impulsive and hot headed.

Lol they would crash and burn so fast. Water and fire don’t mix, opposites attract but that’s about it.

They would argue all the time after the honeymoon phase wore off, they both yell and get angry with their partners and wouldn’t stand to be yelled out without yelling back.

Aang and Mai both are for the most part calm when their partners get angry they help calm them down (more so Aang). Let them rant etc get it all out, take no offense to words said in anger (again more Aang than Mai)

Aang being rightfully distraught upon finding out he’s the last survivor of his people and that his only companion from his culture is gone isn’t the argument you think it is. Like who wouldn’t be mad. Also using Katara helping calm Aang down isn’t the gotcha you think it it. That’s what partners fucking do like. Bfs/gfs help each other clam down when acting irrational. It’s all oh I want a man who only I can calm down that’s such an ideal trope until it’s not your fave couple 🙄

I said what I said and this is coming from someone who used to love Zutara (still likes it? meh depend on the day)

I think the reason I'm a bit iffy about most zutara shippers who call themesleves "pro Katara" (and lets be honest the tags pro katara/katara deserved better are mainly people building themselves a moral highground of "if you disagree with me, you clearly dilslike Katara and want her to suffer") is just the hypocrisy of it all.

Katara's consent was violated by Aang, yes. But Zuko threatening her and being a fucking creep in the "I'll save you from the pirates" scene was sexy and not at all the nightmare of any sane woman.

Katara's role as a healer is treated as her acting subservient and her loosing her feminist icon status. Unless she's healing/offering to heal Zuko.

Aang is immature and childish. But we will handily ignore Zuko, a whole ass 16 year old who's heir to a country throwing a temper tantrum because his girlfriend dared to speak to another man. [Frankly, in my opinion, Zuko isn't really ready for a serious romantic relationship, but yall arent ready for that conversation]

Aang is supposedly misogynistic, but Zuko's many instances of actual misogyny are swept under the rug. Aang is shown in canon to be incredibly supportive of Katara defying the patriarchy.

Supposedly Aang makes Katara do all the housework. Despite there being evidence to the contrary. Zuko has just recently learnt to brew tea.

Katara being the Avatar's wife is supposedly degrading. But if she were Zuko's wife, I'm sure she wouldn't be just a baby maker. (What a horribke thing to call a woman btw. Tall call your own mothers baby makers too???) Despite the fact that Izumi's mother hasn't even been mentioned by name in tlok. But yeah. She'd be afforded the respect she deserves I'm certain.

Aang is, on most accounts, supportive and respectful of Katara's opinions, even when he disagrees with them. Zuko openly mocks people who oppose him. I am going to make a longer post on the Southern Raiders episodes and how all of you watched that episode blindfolded or smth.

Aang comparing Appa being kidnapped (his last connection to his genocided people, the last vestige of his happy past) to Katara's anger over her mother is bad. But Zuko comparing mommy leaving his ass to Katara's mother getting brutally slaughtered in front of her ? Silence.

Aang supposedly needs Katara to mother him and that's a bad thing. But Azula, Mai and Ty Lee having to gentle parent Zuko almost everytime they interact is never talked about, despite the uncalled for verbal abuse that trio goes through from him.

Aang and Katara's 2 year age gap is creepy. But Zuko and Katara's 2 year age gap is fine. My bigest gripe with Zutara lovers is them completely erasing Katara's childishness and immaturity, in order for her and Zuko to have this mature, sexy relationship. She's 14, guys. 14.

This post really isn't meant to decry Zutara. I just want people who ship Zutara to get off their high horse of feminism and to accept that they're no better than the rest of us ship loving freaks. Wanting the main girl to bump uglies with the broody emo twink doesn't make you a modern day suffragette. Disliking a main canon pairing isn't a measure of your love for a female character.

Grow up.

Enjoy your ship like a normal person.

ATLA fandom and removing Katara’s agency and POV

Recently, I came across the following thread where OP proceeded to uplift the following ships to diminish Kataang, on the supposed basis of Katara’s agency and pov (or lack thereof).

I decided to keep all their points and pictures to show a holistic analysis of the show, which they themselves fail to do.

Firstly, on the topic of loss, Kataang has multiple moments where they connect over their losses.

At first, Katara tries to tell Aang that his people may be lost by opening up about her mother, but he is obviously in denial. It is only when he sees Gyatso’s body (like Katara did when her mom passed) that he accepts the loss of his people and her comfort.

I also want to note that this is a recurring pattern of Aang struggling to accept Katara’s comfort at first, despite these shippers’ claims that he easily accepts her “coddling/mothering”.

Kataang as seen in Katara’s pov:

This is easily the most inaccurate part of the thread and shows how shippers fail to acknowledge Katara as a character unless she is with their preferred love interest.

Kataang’s relationship is framed in Katara’s point of view multiple times, especially in these episodes.

Next, Katara’s boundaries:

Once again, they exclude the frames where Katara exercises her agency — pushing him away and telling him off, removing her pov from the scene all on their own. Furthermore on the issue of being violated, what is her point of view when she’s tied to a tree, or when her grandmother is being roughed up and tossed around?

This is part of a greater issue where shippers genuinely believe the misogyny in the writing room is exclusive to a single ship and would somehow be resolved if the female character ended up with… another man.

On Katara’s grief,

Honestly, this has to be the second most dishonest and laughable part of the thread (don’t worry we’ll strike gold soon), so I’m not even going to validate it with more than these pics:

Lastly, the ship in question:

I just find the lightning pic so funny in this context like what?? Like I said earlier, Kataang is shown from Katara’s pov multiple times, but here’s more pics because when your ship has the material!

Aang has seen Katara at her worst multiple times, either stepping in, comforting her or giving her advice (just like Katara has done for him many times, unprompted I might add) because he knows her and has seen her very hostile reactions towards Jet and Hama when they tried to use her as a tool for their revenge. Mind you, this same advice her literal brother and eventually Zuko himself agree with.

Also I always found it pretty weird how Zuko (ahem the writers) set this up so that she can forgive him right after he failed to understand why she was the last one to do so in the beginning of the episode, but anyway…

Lastly, both Aang and Katara have opened to each other in incredibly significant ways. Aang opens up to Katara about the monks and why he disappeared. She is the only person to know this side of him. Meanwhile, Katara tells him about her mother and opens up her family to him, and even in the most platonic interpretations, how is that not the most significant way to open up to someone?

Getting reeeeal annoyed when someone posts a "criticism" and "rewrite" of the events of the show and it's very obvious that they just wanna drive aang away from the friend group, get zuko and katara closer, and weaken every bond that is between aang and katara. I’m gonna say something so crazy…. it’s not at all shocking that Katara would fall in love with Aang given the fact that he is a representation of hope and peace where she has grown up in a world ravaged by war and death. One of the first things he did for her was to literally sacrifice himself to protect her and her family/tribe. He constantly supported her dreams and goals, and was her best friend throughout. Not to mention that they both have a very unique shared trauma of being the last of their respective bending, both being survivors of genocide and both having lost a parent because said parent died protecting them from the enemy that wanted to kill them. They share a unique bond that can’t be replicated with anyone else in the story, so I don’t get why ppl act like it’s so weird that Katara would develop romantic feelings for him.
