Its okay if Mother’s Day is something that is hard for you. if you have an absent or abusive mother, one who passed away, or a child who you never got too hold, or didn’t get too hold long enough, whatever your situation is. Sometimes holidays like this are hard for people to handle. It’s going to be okay, and you are not alone, no matter how much it feels like you are. Spend the day focusing on some self care, watch a favourite movie, use the time to celebrate a friend or a grandmother or even a father who you love, try and do something that you love to do. Always remember that even your worst days only have twenty-four hours in them, so do your best to make it through and then start again fresh on Monday. Once the day is over, you’ve gotten through this holiday for another year. I know you can do this, I believe in you.

She carried something that would become me  and with it the burden of back pain and swollen ankles and when I was born it was no Thumbelina story. There was no gentle emergence from a flower. Rather, the delicate petals were all stained with thick blood stretched open and gaping in a way that is apparently natural but seems horrific while she cursed and screamed. All for me. The rest of life is something like that. No Prince Charming came to take me off of her hands,  and while she and I can both work for it there is no guarantee of a Happily Ever After. I'm not sure if she signed up to motherhood thinking it a fairytale but she has no illusions now. It burns and spits because we can hurt each other more than anyone else. Nobody is crueller or more vulnerable than your mother. She has seen me in my darkness yet her image of me running up a sky-blue staircase, ready to challenge the Sun, will never fade. Don't be fooled into lies that she was designed to believe in me, either.  Not everyone was made to be a mother. This was her success, to be good at it, to love me. She asks how my day went and sometimes I snap at her. We carry ingratitude like stones in our stomachs. I like an outfit and she complains about it. Some parts of her understanding she just will not rewire as quickly as the world is moving. It doesn't matter. It seems like an asteroid has set us aflame and shattered us into rock at the time but after the devastation of everything else, we find that the love has remained.

It should be the day where you love your mother if you do

Come over dude you're family for today I'm cooking that good shit.

Don't like your mom? Don't get her anything. Or, if you feel like you'll be in some shit if you don't, then get her something that says fuck you in the most subtle and passive way possible.

Don't have a mom? Got a dad? He's getting some hecking love today then because he stepped up to the plate to keep you going.

Got two dads? Guess what fathers I'm buying you a dope ass dinner.

Two moms? Hell yeah its love time lets have fun.

Don't have either? Celebrate your parent friends. Or maybe make it a day to treat yourself.

Point is. Today isn't just for moms. It's for the single dads, for the mom friends, the animal moms (they count fight me on this), and yourself even. It's for the caregivers in your life that helped keep you alive for this long. Even if it's just you, treat yourself you fucking deserve it.

If you see a friend (or someone you know) who feels like mother's day isn't a good day for them, sit down and listen. Maybe offer something to eat or return home and do something together.

Family is made with more than blood. If it doesn't have any love then it's not a family.

If anyone today needs to vent or maybe needs a little pick me up or encouragment. My inbox is always open! I can always give out some love and support to anyone who wants it.

Yearly Reminder

That not everyone has a mom, or a loving mom. Some of us have a mother by birth but not by right, and we need to be conscious of that.

Slogans like “moms deserve love too” and “don’t forget everything your mother did for you!” etc can be triggering for some of us, since many people can’t see that blood ≠ equal family.

It’s okay to not celebrate Mother’s Day! You don’t have to feel guilty about it, especially if your mother never cared about or celebrated you. Just remember to practice self-care today.
