3.) Describe the creative process of writing a chapter/fic
I have a neat writing process post here! It basically goes like this:
-Idea dump, mostly focusing on themes, where characters are now vs where I want them to be, what everyone is feeling/struggling with, etc
-Several drafts
Check the post out if you're interested, I included the entire process for a chapter of PdA with PDFs of the idea dump and drafts.
4.) Where do you find inspiration for new ideas?
I hope this doesn't sound too weird, but I'm not a big... Fan of? Believer in??? Inspiration. Ideas are a dime a dozen, and everything has been done before. What matters is the execution, which requires showing up and doing the work reliably- and never waiting for lightning to strike with ideas or a certain mood/desire to create.
Yes, I'm painfully aware that I'm the least exciting human ever, lol!
Generally, my issue is deciding which of an endless pile of concepts to work on. Once I've done that, the concern is effective project management. How do I see this new concept to its completion in a (hopefully) reasonable amount of time?
Allocating finite time is probably the most challenging part of life in general!
24.) Worst writing advice anyone ever gave you?
Ohhh man, this one is really fun!
My blissfully naïve fourteen-year-old self made the mistake of printing the first few chapters of my novel in progress and taking them to high school, where I showed them to my friends. I received an absolute cacophony of feedback that ranged from strange to mean, but most of it was simply... People projecting the story they wanted onto the story I was writing for myself.
The bit I remember today concerned my main character. She was young and had lived a physically pampered but emotionally neglected life. Circumstances sent her on a journey, and she chose a calm, sensible horse as her mount. And though she had only ridden in leisurely group settings, a friend insisted that... Um, well, if I didn't plonk her onto a stallion that no one else could control, I was bowing to the patriarchy. Yes, my friend wanted a horse girl story, lmao!!!
Joking aside, exploring strength in women and girls is the most resounding theme of my writing. I'm not looking down on the badass woman character type, but I am keen to show that there are so many kinds of strength. Obviously this is true for everyone, but women are so often neglected in entertainment, and their stories are the ones I most want to tell.
What I'm getting at here is that you should never mistake someone else's preferences for meaningful criticism/advice. The ability to deliver meaningful writing criticism is learned, and not many people are trained in it. Most audiences regurgitate their own preferences when asked, and that has nothing to do with your story.
If that sort of dialogue interests you, pursue it! But I'm generally wary of seeking criticism unless I have some sense of the person's literary background and how they engage with media.
26.) Which of your fics would you call your wildest ride?
Hahaha, in terms of writing it? Probably Voices. Voices was a year-long exercise in developing character voice. I followed the six oldest Chosen and Eimi through a Japanese school year, writing a journal entry from one of the kids every day. EVERY DAY. FOR A YEAR. A JOURNAL ENTRY.
I leaned heavily on tropes because there was no time to plan, lol! I flew by the seat of my pants for a whole danged year!!!! In a lot of ways, it's my least favorite fic, because there was just no time! But it was a huge challenge, and frankly, audiences love tropes. It was popular with a lot of my readers. It's also probably one of my more shippy offerings?
Seeking Resonance is a stand out for me in the sense that it took me three years to nail the climax and decide how I wanted the last 20% of the story to wind down. THREE YEARS of thinking and exploring and simmering! But I genuinely could not have made a product I was happy with without quietly tending to it. Honestly, sometimes I think we need to... I don't know, grow or learn something or experience something??? Before we can be where the story needs us to be, as a person.
Oh, but that doesn't mean we should wait to start the story! The three years of thinking on it were definitely work and part of the process.
So You Were Alive was an interesting one in that I sat down and wrote the whole dang thing in under two hours. Like, within two hours of starting, it was published, with all the images and everything. At the time, the Kizuna feels were strong. The imagery and some of the dialogue from the first reboot episodes fed right into the Kizuna feels, and before I knew it, I was clicking the publish button!
Note that none of these are my favorite or best fics, in my opinion. But they are standouts in regards to the process.

hiiiii !!! if you are accepting requests at the moment, can i ask something about reader and tom expecting a baby, one day while he’s drunk she sees him flirting with another women and when she confronts him he snaps at her and tells her he’s not ready for this “shit”. So they broke up and broke contact for months, until he shows in her apartment regretting his words and they talk but she suddenly at that moment gets into labor?!? I remember seeing a concept similar in a movie but I would love if you couldn’t bring it to life! Thank you so much in advance, appreciate your work a lot 🧸🤎

“Hi babe, just to let you know Yamna’s invited me out for dinner this evening so don’t worry if you get home early and im not back! I love you x”
It was a spur of the moment plan, which was a rarity recently. The past 5 months since you’d found out, you could name barely 5 occasions you’d been out past 8 oclock- trading your heels for fuzzy slippers and dresses for massively oversized tops and joggers. It wasn’t how you had expected to be spending the summer before your 25th birthday but it was now your life. The rooftop bars, the wild nights, the get aways had all sort of been cancelled for… for the rest of your life.
Because an 8 month pregnant belly isn’t something you can ignore.
Sure…. it wasn’t the plan. Not the plan to be pregnant with your boyfriend of only 6 months, who at the time you didn’t even live with. But you were making it work. And now, you were just excited. It was the start of a new story with Tom, and you’d got past the phase of being sad and mourning your youth. Because the little bubba inside of you, she was pretty awesome and you really couldn’t wait to meet her.
So yes, you had been home alone eating ice cream from a tub when Yamna knocked on the door. She’d been one of your best mates for as long as you could remember so when she’d turned up unannounced with mascara smeared under her eyes you’d cancelled your plans of a pathetic alone evening. Her boss had just given her the sack - which was no surprise. He was a backwards tory old git who couldn’t handle the fact Yamna was a woman doing the job better than he could ever dream of.
So yes, you’d suggested going out to the fancy new bar down the road - to celebrate the fact she no longer had to put up with the arsehole. Obviously you couldn’t drink and neither did Yamna, but you go to a bar for the atmosphere - and the selection of mocktails they had was insane.
Your boyfriend Tom was already out, he said he had a meeting and then dinner with some execs he needed to shmoosh. Of course you didn’t mind, but he had been working a lot recently, in order to be able to have the time off when your baby girl arrives.
So after sending a little text and giving Yamna another hug to try and turn the evening from disappointment to celebration you walked out the door with a smile on your face. Maybe you could pretend, just for an evening to not be pregnant and whale-like?

The bar was just a 10 minute walk so it wasn’t long before the two of you were soaking up the atmosphere. It was all decorated in a rustic fashion, with old exposed wood and dangling lightbulbs from the ceiling and the drinks were incredible. The type that have dry ice or flames or some other sort of fantastical display of edible decorations. Even Yamna had perked up, especially when a guy from the table across had bought you both a round of drinks.
“I’m just gonna pop to the loo.”
“Do you really need the toilet or do you just want to parade infornt of the fit rich man who keeps looking at you?”
“ Is both an option?” You laughed as Yamna slipped off her stool, winking rather dramatically as she did so. She was unbelievable - but at least this way she wasn’t thinking about her work, or lack thereof, anymore.
Happily you sat scrolling though your phone, seeing that tom had messaged you with an okay, before flicking through instagram.
And that was where the happiness ended.
For in a hurried manner, with a face looking a lot more ghosted than when she left, Yamna took her seat again.
“Are you okay?” Immediately your worry took over, the way she was biting her lip and not meeting your eyes not helping.
“I um yeh-yeh. Just I think I saw Tom.”
“Tom as in my Tom?” Her almost guilty looking nod had your scrunching your eyebrows, why was it such a big deal Tom was inside?
“He didn’t see me I don’t think but er… he just looked pretty close to a girl and I-“
To be honest you stopped listening at that point, heart dropping out the bottom of your chest. Because it made sense, he had been so distant recently and even if you’d been lying to yourself that it were work - this seemed much more likely. Whilst nodding along, pretending to listen to Yamna, instead your attention was solely focused on fiddling with the promise ring he’d got you after the two of you decided to keep the baby. He’d been so committed, so ready for this unexpected news. He’d said he was in for the long haul.
“Y/n?”
“sorry I um… it’s probably just a work colleague he needs to sweet talk. I’ll um-I’ll just go say hello.”
“I’m coming with you.” She spoke astutely, very much forcing herself into the situation.
“No no I’ll… I’ll come back if I need you, just wait here.”
Her face was so grim and destitute, as much as you were pretending it was okay - you knew it wasn’t. Before Yamna could protest further, you slipped off your seat ( clumsily thanks to the elephant belly) and walked with fake confidence back inside.
It took you barely 3 seconds to hone in on Tom, call it mothers intuition. He was on a booth in the corner with 5 others on his table but none of whom you recognised. It was 2 other guys and 3 girls - the six all paired off in mathcingly initimate conversations. Apart from that you payed almost zero attention to the others, attention solely focused on your boyfriend and the girl he had his arm round.
She was everything you weren’t. She was skinny - you, as previously mentioned, looked like you had a beachball stuffed under your top. She was blonde with sleek and perfectly styled waves at the tips of her long her - yours was thrown into a messy bun due to the last minute plans.
Most importantly - right now she was wrapped in Toms arms, whilst you stood alone watching.
God knows what came over you, but with confidence you never normally had you marched up to the table, just waiting at the end. One of the men you didn’t recognised, arrogantly asked you ‘can I help you’ - but you completely disregarded it, eyes solely fixed on Tom. He took a moment more to look away from the leggy girl, but as soon as he did his eyes grew massively wide.
“Y/n I-I-“
“Fancy bumping into you, I thought you were out with work executives?” Frantically casting his gaze across the table, you could see the cogs whirring to try and come up with an explanation.
“No I-I was but then Charlie here came over, we used to be mates at school and-“
“Oh fuck off Tom., I cant deal with this right now.”
You didn’t even have the energy to listen to his clearly fake excuses as to why he’d landed himself in that situation. You also certainly did not have it in you to maintain the strong face, you could feel everything shattering inside of you.
Because it was so blindingly obvious by how he had acted. You’d caught him out and you both knew it.
And it fucking hurt like hell.
So you exited the bar as fast as physically possible, hearing the shouts of both Yamna and Tom behind you. You didn’t know what you needed in that moment - except that neither of them were the answer. Tom though, presumably the faster of the two, managed to catch up - grabbing your arm to make you halt in the road.
There was this moment between the two of you that time almost seemed to freeze. The two of you, in an otherwise pretty empty residential street, at 9:30 at night, in a moment that you would never have again. From your point of view, you saw the slightly bloodshot and bleary eyes, widened with panic and fear. For Tom he saw the floods of tears down your cheeks, which you hadn’t even noticed were freely streaming.
But in that moment there was, at least, the slightest bit of peace. The slightest bit of hope - that he could explain, that he had some ludicrous but valid reason for the situation you had walked in on. Just a smidgen of hope that this were recoverable.
But then he had to open his bloody mouth.
“Y/n I swear nothing-“
“That didn’t look like fucking nothing!”
“It was I swear! We just-“
“Tom this is your one and only chance. I don’t care if your off your face, if you don’t give my a miracle of a reason as to what the fuck THAT was - then I’m gone.”
“Don’t say that Y/n, you don’t mean th-“ He tried to grab your hand which you snatched away, like you had just scalded it on a hot plate. Like he had hurt you.
“I swear to god I’ve never meant anything more. So cut the shit.”
“FIne-fine! Um so we were at the meeting and then on the way out I bumped into George and hes been a good mate of mine for years.” All you did was hum, arms crossed and making sure you had a metre of distance between the two of you.
“So he said god you look like you need a drink and I agreed because its been stressful as hell recently.”
“Oh its been stressful; for YOU has it? I’m so sorry Thomas, has it been hard for you while i’ve been throwing my lungs up with morning sickness? Has it been stressful that I’ve been running on zero hours sleep because she kicks me all bloody night? ” Your words were laced in a posioned sarcasm, to which Tom just stammered to.
“Please just let me.” Given he was supposed to be fighting for you, he sounded pretty darn defeated already.
“I said yes to the drink.” He skipped out the bit that had angered you, to which you rolled your eyes at. “And one turned into two and more and then I don’t know-“
“Your going to have to try a lot harder than that.” You deadpanned, taking a small step further back still.
“I mean it! The girls were all his friends and we were just talking.”
“Just talking? All pressed up and arms round her?”
“Yes!” As indignant as he retorted, it didn’t not make up for what you had seen with your own eyes.
“Your such a bullshitter Tom!”
“God why wont you just listen to me?” He cried, wobbly doing a little 360 on the spot, in what appeared to be exasperation.
“Because your just spouting fucking lies! And you try and blame it all on poor little tommo being stressed which is-“
“I HAVE BEEN! Running round after you! I’m just tired of this shit!!! So kill me, for having one night of freedom!”
Tom was too deep in his angry lecture to take any notice of you. Which is why, once finished, he waitied, breath heavy and nose flaring. He was waiting for you to scream back at him. To give it back. He was too drunk to notice the change in your demeanor.
“I’m tired of this shit.”
It was just reverberating round your head. Again and again and again. He was tired of your relationship and you hadn’t even become parents yet. He was at his wits-end and the baby was still unborn. What the fuck was going to happen when baby arrived? Clearly there was no hope. It was dead. Your relationship was dead with no chance of revival.
Because he’d said it. Your relationship was shit, and nobody can put up with something they hate for that long. Not 18 years. Not while bringing up a child.
So with a new sense of dread and fear and complete and total isolation you uttered three single words before hysterically running away.
“Don’t follow me.”
Not now, not ever.

The weekend is fun: students’ two days of temporary rest and catching up on their assignments. Jungkook doesn’t concern himself with the latter, but he does enjoy waking up later in the day and lying down on the grass with his arms crossed under his head, bathing in the sun without any worries. It’s peaceful, thinking thoughts of you with dimmed eyes while the breeze gently wafts past him.
But of course, Taehyung wouldn’t let him just enjoy his day without a hint of irritation. Good things never last anyway. He’s sitting in the middle of the field, a hot spot for relaxation, and feels the soil under his palms while observing his surroundings. Yoongi is with them, munching on a few snacks while scrolling through his phone as it quietly plays music.
“The girl at the party,” Taehyung begins before glancing at Jungkook through his sunglasses, “she was alone when I came back. You weren’t around either; did you cum too soon or something? I saw you two kiss.”
“I left,” Jungkook mumbles without opening his eyes.
“Why?”
“I was bored.”
“And where did you go?” he pries.
“None of your business.”
Taehyung scoffs at his dismissal before averting his gaze elsewhere. “I do have a guess.”
“Don’t start,” Yoongi warns him without looking up. The two best friends usually get into arguments in a matter of seconds daily, and Yoongi just wants to spend his day without having to break up a fight. Just this once, he hopes… but hope doesn’t save him.
“I’m just wondering if you actually went all the way back to campus to fuck another girl, who coincidentally also does your homework.” His tone is cool and collected, but it borders on mocking that usually goes unnoticed. He’s been around these two too long for them to miss, however. Yoongi sighs, dreading the response already.
Jungkook sits up on his elbows with a glare directed towards Taehyung. “How’s your ex holding up, Tae? You think she cheated on another guy yet?”
Neither of the two friends have a filter around them, no consideration for their words as they apathetically insult one another; but Jungkook can go too far, especially by bringing up old wounds. 
Taehyung was in a toxic relationship with his first girlfriend of two years, which took a huge toll on his mindset. Constant infidelity, endless forgiving, make up sex and catching her with another man after: a cycle that went on for over 24 months. The concept of love became tainted in his eyes, no longer interacting with the opposite gender if not to get laid, and Jungkook’s commensalistic - rather parasitic - relationship doesn’t disprove his hateful ideology. Love only consists of two people: a host who provides, and the parasite that selfishly takes it all. 
But he isn’t over the pain that lasted a year after the break up, which was shamelessly executed by the parasite: his former girlfriend. It took a lot of trust to open up about it to his friends, and it lifted a heavy weight off of his chest. Only this year did he stop thinking about her, until Jungkook asked about her so casually. It stings his heart only for a second, and he scoffs as Yoongi intervenes, “Both of you need to shut the fuck up.”
“If you guys want to talk about my relationships, then don’t get all whiny when I talk about yours.”
Taehyung swallows his pride and confidently answers, “I don’t know, Jungkook. I hear she’s doing well, but no information on her boyfriends. Your turn: what’s going on with that nerd?”
“Elaborate.”
“Are you two dating?” Yoongi asks exhaustedly. They just keep taking every opportunity to annoy each other, and it’s even overwhelming him at this point. 
Rolling his neck side to side in thought, Jungkook takes a moment to answer, “No.”
“Bullshit,” Taehyung spits. “You know what? Let’s just move on. I’m sure I could get proper answers from someone else.”
“If you have a death wish, that is,” he warns with a slight seethe before lying back down.
He doesn’t respond and hides a smirk, a couple having a romantic picnic ahead of him from a distance. He watches them for a few seconds before muttering to himself, “It’s not going to be my death.”

Yoongi and Jungkook chill on their own after Taehyung leaves. He’s roaming the campus in hopes of finding that one girl who is always wearing some school skirt and working 24/7 to find out what is so special about her. Jungkook might think he doesn’t notice them interacting, but behind that airhead facade, he’s observant. It’s not that big of a fucking secret either, they’re not deliberately hiding their strangely beneficial friendship or whatever. You stick out like a sore thumb in the yard, though there’s not many people to tell you apart from anyway.
He approaches you rather slowly, inspecting your figure first before meeting you. Your posture is straight and composed, fingers quickly typing away on your keyboard without even looking at them. You look so serious to him, a contrast to the radiant butterflies flying past you in such a bright environment. He wonders if you ever procrastinate or take breaks, and most importantly, how someone that appears so smart has fallen into such an obvious trap set by his best friend of all people. 
His hands are in his pockets as he speaks his first words to you. “Hi, I’m Taehyung.”
Your reaction is instant: a quick look at him and you’re already frowning. “I’m Jungkook’s best friend,” he adds in case you’ve seen him around before. 
“I don’t know you.” And with that distant reply, you return to your essay. If meeting Jimin has taught you anything, it’s that you can’t trust anyone who claims to know your lover. They are just using it against you… 
“Well, shit,” he laughs, “I didn’t realize you were so cold.” Your eyes don’t waver from your screen, so he tries another approach: “Are you the girl Jungkook left the party a few days back for?”
Your ears perk up in his direction, but you don’t show it. But he notices the pause in your taps before you continue typing, and he holds that against you. He takes a seat across from you, and your laptop covers your face from him. “I just wanted to meet the person that’s got him whipped enough to get high and run off to them.” You bite down on a smile and prolong your silence. “I guess I’ll talk to you when you’re not busy.” 
He stands up just as you tell him, “Wait, no, I’m not busy.” You close your laptop mid-way before hesitating, but slam it shut nonetheless. “Sorry.”
“You’re good.” He sits back down and clasps his hands on the table. “So what’s going on between you and him? He refuses to tell me, as if you’re his little secret.”
You shyly look down at your flats and twiddle your fingers on your lap. “We’re together… but he is very mysterious.”
It’s a good thing you don’t glance at him to hide your blush, because he’s a little skeptical. He puckers his lips and furrows his brows but controls his expression when you look up. He mentally curses for taking longer than a few seconds to respond; it’s suspicious. “I know right? I don’t know why he’s so reluctant to talk about you. You’re a total sweetheart.”
Approval from Jungkook’s friend: check. Will he like you more if you get along with his friends? The thought excites you, because at least this is someone he likes, unlike Jimin. “Thank you,” you shy a smile. “Um…”
You’re awkward: not Jungkook’s type, Taehyung notes. You’re obviously the host... “So is this a fling, or are you two serious?”
“We’re serious!” you immediately answer. “I love him, and he recently told me he loves me too. He used to kiss me for doing his homework, but now he does it out of nowhere.”
Wow… romantic. He suppresses a chuckle because he doesn’t want to laugh in your face, not when you’re so cute when you talk about him. Your eyes light up with a gleam, a lovesick smile gracing your face and now desperate to befriend him. You look like him when he was supposedly in love. You’re serious about Jungkook, but for how long? Especially when the other side of the relationship is not so committed. It should be mutual: with two hosts.
“Yeah?” he acts interested and raises his sunglasses up to his hair. “How does he act around you?”
“Well,” you start gushing, “he is a little closed off with his emotions.” True. “He doesn’t like me talking to other guys.” Ooh, interesting. “He can’t stand being ignored,” you chuckle. Can he now? “And… he is so cute when he’s jealous. He has this glare whenever I don’t give him enough attention, but he would never admit it. He likes being intimate with me, likes it when I reassure him. He never says it out loud though, I can just tell by looking at him. I’ve never felt this way for anyone, never fell in love with someone until I met Jungkook. I just want to make him happy because he used to look so sad when I watched him from afar.” A hopeless romantic.
Maybe if you didn’t sound so genuine and innocent, he would’ve made fun of you. But he just feels pity for someone who is so giving to someone who gives back so little. You don’t deserve it; don’t deserve to stay up working on so many assignments; don’t deserve to not have any hobbies; don’t deserve to be so unloved. You are pathetic, but it doesn’t turn him off.
Taehyung is a host too.
He clears his throat at the unexpected stirring emotions in his heart, “What do you love about him? Do you like being treated like shit or something?”
“He doesn’t treat me badly! He is like a light switch, you know? He doesn’t know how to act, sometimes sweet and sometimes… a little mean. I love him for his pure heart, and I believe that we are similar in a lot of ways.”
Taehyung can’t contain his snort. Similar? You are opposites. You are similar to him, not Jungkook. He feels… jealous. The pairing is just so ridiculous and flawed, but you’re neither of the two; you are just good. Taehyung can be good too. “So, what’s your Instagram user?”
The lack of commentary and escalation of the topic catches you off guard. It’s a distraction. “I don’t have an account,” you reply in confusion.
“Wow, I’d expect you to cyberstalk Jungkook on there,” he jokes with a laugh.
“He has an Instagram?”
He purses his lips, his grin faltering as he nods. He takes out his phone from his pocket to show you the account, and holds it in your face. Your lips part as you gently take it from him, curiously inspecting the collage of images.

“He plays the guitar?” you ask in awe. You click on each picture to zoom in on them, and your heart jumps upon seeing his selfies while Taehyung hums. He is gorgeous in your eyes, and you want to keep up with his posts in hopes of seeing another selfie. These are hidden gems that Taehyung had the courtesy of providing to you.
“He’s learning,” Taehyung says, “you should sign up and post some pictures as well. You’re really cute.” His cheeky compliment makes you happy; he is basically giving you his blessing! 
“Thank you, and you’re right,” you chirp, “I will make an account after I finish this essay. Want to take a picture with me?”

Jungkook starts chasing him around the room as Taehyung runs without stopping his provocation. “Why so upset Jungkook? Do you see it happening too? I’m already imagining how tight-”
“You should leave, Jungkook.” Neither of them listen to Yoongi, so he yells, “Jungkook, leave!”
A moment of deafening silence passes as both of them pause to catch their breaths. “She’s too sweet,” Taehyung begins, “too kind, too nice, everything you’re not. You wouldn’t be trying to keep me away from her if you didn’t know that. Are you afraid she’ll like me better?”
“Go fuck yourself,” Jungkook spits with a heaving chest. “She’s loyal to me, but I’m sure you’re not familiar with that concept. No wonder your relationships only last one night.” With a final glare, he leaves as told to return to you. The only thing he needs right now is one more ‘I love you’ from you, as much as he hates it. So I’m not entirely sure if this is going to be just a couple parts or a small series, I kind of just came up with it randomly! I also couldn’t think of a better title so bear with me please haha nevertheless I hope you enjoy! I loved writing this beginning so far!

You fiddled with the keys in your hand, searching for the one you marked for this particular unit. Finally, you found the correct one, pushing it into the lock and opening the front door with a click. It looked like pretty much every other apartment in the building, modern with a large living space, open concept kitchen with stainless steel appliances, large windows that looked over the city of Seoul. Just another multi-million dollar home you could only ever afford in your dreams.
Yet here you were, entering the home of an individual who could afford such a space in their reality... because it was your job to clean it. Yes, you were a housekeeper for the company who owned this apartment building; one of the most expensive places to live in all of South Korea.
You had moved here to Seoul from your home country abroad in search of change. A new adventure? Something to push you out of your comfort zone? Really you were just extremely bored back home; sick of the same routines, the same people, the career you didn’t enjoy. So, before you could talk yourself out of it, you contacted a job agency based in Seoul, South Korea whose mission was to find jobs for foreigners who spoke little to no Korean (aka you). And that is approximately how you landed this gig. Only a few months in and your Korean had significantly improved (requiring basic necessities like, you know, food and toilet paper, forced you to learn how to acquire said items in this new language) and you weren’t hating this job at all. You were alone most of the time, cleaning wasn’t too difficult since you have been doing it your whole life, and because it was for such a wealthy company the pay wasn’t bad either. Was it what you wanted to do for the rest of your life? Probably not. But it paid the bills and still left some income for exploration of your new home country.
And honestly, the most difficult part of it all was the scheduling. Sometimes you had limited time to clean a home based on the person’s day, sometimes you had an excessive number of units to clean in one day and wondered how exactly you were going to finish them all. But once you came into a routine that stuck you quickly found a pace for yourself that worked perfectly.
And since you were entering the homes of some of Korea’s wealthiest and most famous, the contract and background check for the position were quite lengthy. For example, you couldn’t touch anything unnecessary in their homes, couldn’t snoop around (obviously, you wouldn’t do that for a “regular” person anyway?), you weren’t even allowed to use their bathroom if you had to. The company had contacted all your previous employers, colleagues, some friends, even randomly requested internet browsing history a couple times! (I guess they wanted to make sure you weren’t a crazy stalker “fan” some K-pop groups you had heard about having, or a spy for another company’s CEO). The process was rather insane in your opinion, but alas, you passed, and honestly, the fact that you were a foreigner who didn’t speak much Korean probably helped your case. And to be fair, you really didn’t care about whose house you were in, you were just thankful to have acquired a job after your decision to move across the world that happened on a whim.
This particular unit was actually decorated quite nicely. It was more minimal style, with modern furniture that still felt warm and inviting. You figured it must be the home of someone younger, probably mid-twenties like you, but you also got the feeling they didn’t spend much time here. It was already in fairly immaculate shape (thankfully, it was your last job of the day, so you knew it was going to be quick) and didn’t seem very lived in in general. You couldn’t help but notice what looked like speakers and recording equipment shoved into the corner of the room. This place must belong to a musician or producer of some sort, you thought. You shrugged and turned back to where you had entered, lugging your cleaning supplies in through the front door. Then you put in your wireless headphones, pulled on your rubber gloves, and began by dusting around the surfaces of the living room.
Not long after you had started, you were in the bathroom off the guestroom wiping down the sink. A sudden sound of what you thought was the loud slam of a door shutting startled you. Your head shot up and you stopped what you were doing to remove an earphone from one of your ears. Immediately you heard the raised voice of a young woman coming from down the hall, followed by a quieter one from a man. Your heart started racing. Were you in the wrong unit? Had you read the schedule incorrectly? Did you get the address mixed up? You frantically pulled your phone from your back pocket to check the schedule that came directly from management. Yes, the date matched, it was Tuesday. Yes, the time matched, 2 in the afternoon. And the address was correct, too. So why were there people suddenly in the home? Did they know you were here? This had never happened before in the short time you had been doing this job, so you had no idea what to do. Continue working like you didn’t realize they were here? Make your presence known so you don’t seem like you’re being suspicious? Were you going to get in trouble with the company? Certainly not if you were just following the schedule, right? Your mind was going a mile a minute.
Then before you could quite make up your mind, the voices sounded even closer, and you could only make out a little bit of what they were saying, especially since your Korean wasn’t great yet.
“Why didn’t you go with me?... What were you thinking?” you heard the woman’s voice say (or something like that so you thought?) She sounded angry.
“I don’t know…” the man replied, followed by something else you couldn’t comprehend. He was still a lot quieter than her.
She spoke again.
“What are people going to say, Jungkook?”
You froze.
Jungkook.
Jungkook? Of BTS?
Okay, so you weren’t a crazy stalker fan or anything, but it was impossible to avoid knowing about the K-pop group BTS. They were literally everywhere around Seoul. Commercials on tv, billboards all over the city, posters on the subway trains… their faces even appeared on the coffee drink you had every morning for goodness sake! Since you kept seeing them, after you had gotten the job, you researched them a little bit. Their music was good, they seemed like genuine people, but never did you think you would be in one of their houses. There were hundreds of Korean businessmen, executives, celebrities, and only 7 members of BTS. Honestly, what were the chances?
Pretty good apparently. Fuck.
“I’m your girlfriend, Jungkook,” she continued annoyingly.
Ah, that’s right. In your brief research you had read he was seeing another idol. What was her name again?
“No, Cho-hee,” Jungkook replied.
Oh right. Kim Cho-hee. You remember now.
“You’re my pretend girlfriend.”
Your heart stopped.
Oh fuck! You definitely weren’t supposed to hear that. You had to show yourself now. That’s it, your decision was made for the sake of your career.
You quietly walked out of the room and found the two of them in the hallway with their backs turned to you. Just as Cho-hee was opening her mouth to respond you cleared your throat.
They both whipped around at your sudden sound. Yep, it was them alright. You recognized them immediately. They stared at you stunned for a second before Cho-hee spoke up.
“Who are you?!” she practically barked in Korean, taking a few steps towards you with her long slim legs, her large brown eyes wide, her dark hair whipping around her shoulders, her pale skin painted with a red hue.
“I, uh, I’m…” you stuttered, attempting to find the correct Korean words but failing miserably from being put on the spot.
Jungkook calmly put his hand around Cho-hee’s arm and pulled her back slightly.
“She the housekeeper,” he answered in Korean for you. Yes, that was the word you were looking for. “I don’t think she speaks Korean.”
Not well, anyway, thanks Jungkook.
He turned toward you, his dark brown eyes finding yours. Your stomach flipped from nervousness.
“You speak English?” he asked timidly in your native tongue.
All you could do was nod.
He let out a sigh of relief and said something you didn’t understand to Cho-hee, causing her to step back and a look of relief to wash over her face, too.
It was then that you realized they probably thought you didn’t understand their conversation. That you didn’t know the meaning of any of it. Should you come clean and tell them you understood? Particularly the “pretend girlfriend” stuff?
Cho-hee turned back toward the main room and beckoned at Jungkook.
“Come on, let the help continue working.”
Oof. ‘The help’. You definitely understood that. You knew cleaning the homes of rich people meant you may run into some entitlement, but dang, you didn’t think someone would make it so obvious, language barrier or not.
You winced.
Jungkook cocked his head, a confused look on his face. But then he shook it off.
“I think…” he said hesitantly in English, then shook his head to correct himself, “Ah um no, I thought you were here on Wednesday?”
You shook your head.
“No, um, my schedule says Tuesday. So, unless it’s wrong then…”
Jungkook put two fingers to the bridge of his nose in thought.
“Aiishh, no you are right, I’m sorry. I’m not here very often so I never can remember which day.”
You began taking off your gloves.
“It’s-it’s okay, I can go, come back at a better time…”
He waved his hands in front of him in protest.
“No, no, stay, continue, please. I don’t want to be an... interrupt... interruption? That’s the right word?” a blush formed on his face as he chuckled at himself.
You smiled. Cute.
“Yes, that’s right. Thank you. I’m almost done, I promise.”
He smiled at you again and nodded.
“Jungkook-ah!” Cho-hee yelled from the kitchen.
Jungkook then bowed to you and whispered a quick “thank you” before disappearing into the other room.
You hadn’t realized how tense your body had become until you they were out of your sight and you released your muscles with a deep breath.
You quickly decided to keep their conversation to yourself; no point in letting them know you accidentally heard every word and understood, right? You wouldn’t tell anyone, after all it wasn’t your business. Still, there was that thing you felt for not speaking up right away. What was this feeling again? Oh yeah. Guilt. You tried to shake it off and just continued scrubbing.
There were, thankfully, no more loud conversations between the two of them while you cleaned, but just as you were finishing up in the last room of the home you heard the front door open and close. Were you by yourself again? You listened for noises. Silence. You couldn’t help but feel a bit of relief.
However, upon stumbling back into the kitchen with all your cleaning supplies you noticed Jungkook sitting on a stool at the kitchen island. He was scrolling through his phone and eating a bowl of cereal. He jumped when he saw you, clutching his tattoo covered hand to his chest.
“Holy shit, I forgot you were here,” he stated breathlessly.
Your face turned hot.
“Sorry, I’m... sorry for startling you. And again, for being here while you’re here; the, um, schedule mix up, I’m, uh, not sure what happened…” you stumbled over your words. Real smooth.
He waved his hand while shoving another spoonful of cereal and milk into his mouth.
“No, no, really, it’s my fault. I forget the schedule sometimes.”
You shrugged and nodded.
“Yes, well, I imagine you’re pretty busy most of the time.”
Shit. The words fell out of your mouth before you could stop them. Weren’t you not supposed to know who he was? You mentally smacked yourself in the forehead.
He didn’t seem bothered though, he just replied with a nod and a small “mhmm”, as if to say, ‘you’re not wrong’.
You started walking towards the front door to leave (before you could get yourself in even more trouble), but right as you did so Jungkook lifted the cereal box up from its place on the counter, looked at you and asked, “Want some?”
You stopped in your tracks and hesitated.
“Umm… I’m not sure… I’m allowed?”
You felt silly for saying this as you were a grown ass adult, but you knew it was true. There were so many rules put in place with this job, and they hadn’t quite gotten to the clause about eating the client’s cereal.
Jungkook stood up and walked around to the cupboard, pulling a bowl down from the shelf and grabbing a spoon from the drawer.
He placed them at the spot across from him and gave you a small smile before sitting back down.
“It’s okay. I’m okay. Your secret is safe with me.”
He ran his fingers along his lips like a zipper which made you both laugh.
“That is my favorite cereal…” you admitted, putting your things on the floor and walking over to the stool.
As you were sitting down, Jungkook began pouring the milk into your bowl. You stared at it confusingly, caught off guard for a second. Not cereal first? He read your expression immediately.
“I know, I am weird, I put milk first, okay?”
You put your hands up and laughed, a blush on both your faces.
“I didn’t say anything,” you retaliated.
Jungkook jokingly narrowed his eyes at you as he poured in the cereal, a grin still across his lips.
“I saw it in your face.”
You chuckled nervously and looked down at your now full bowl, taking a spoonful up to your mouth.
“What’s your name?” Jungkook suddenly asked.
You swallowed before answering.
“(y/n).”
There was a pause.
“What’s… yours?” you asked coyly, wondering if you could get away with pretend naivety.
Jungkook cocked his head and let a breathy giggle out his nose as he chewed, it scrunching and creating wrinkles.
“Hmm... my name is… Park Jimin.”
You snorted, thankful that no milk shot out your nose.
He laughed at that, his perfect teeth on display.
Clearly, he was testing you. Two could play at that game.
“Oh yeah? Well then it’s nice to meet you, Jimin.”
He didn’t break eye contact with you as he took another bite.
“You too, (y/n).”
You smiled and shook your head, looking down to fill your spoon once more.
The two of you continued eating, just causally chatting, mostly about you and your move to Korea and your life back in your home country. Jungkook seemed so shy and sweet, the complete counterpart to his “pretend” girlfriend.
Your stomach flipped at the memory of the conversation you had overheard. You had almost forgot about it by now, wrapped up in the random moment of eating cereal with Jungkook. The guilty feeling returned. You knew you had to let him know, especially after how kind he has been to you. He could hate you, that was okay, it’s not like you had anything to lose.
Oh, except your job.
You dropped your spoon into the now empty bowl and took a deep breath.
“Umm... I have to tell you something…” you began before you could chicken out from this awkward conversation you were about to have with basically a stranger.
He put his bowl to his lips and slurped the milk while simultaneously looking up at you, waiting for you to continue.
“I speak some Korean. And I heard your conversation earlier… with, um, Cho-hee, and I understood… well, most of it,” he slowly placed his bowl back on the counter in front of him and stared at you with wide eyes, his lips slightly parted open, “But I-I didn’t mean to, I’m sorry, I just wasn’t sure what to do, and I-I swear I will keep it to myself and never mention it ever again; I’ll just pretend I didn’t hear anything, okay? Seriously. I promise.”
He didn’t say anything, and you couldn’t read the expression on his face. He stared off into space for a minute, then stood up and grabbed the empty bowls, walking them over to the sink and placing them inside. His back was to you as he hunched over, his hands supporting him on either side. Your heart was beating a mile a minute, your hands getting sweaty as you fiddled with your fingers.
“I really am sorry,” you whimpered softly, “Please, please don’t have me fired.”
He turned back to you, a surprised look on his face, his doe eyes wide.
“What? Why would I do that?”
You looked down.
“I don’t know… for not telling you I heard right away. For listening. For… being here while you’re here.”
Jungkook sighed and ran a hand through his long black hair, then shut his eyes tightly.
“I’m not worried you tell anyone, it’s okay. I have been thinking about… trying to end it anyway.”
He opened his eyes again and suddenly looked tired and worried. But you didn’t want to pry. It really wasn’t your place.
“Okay.”
Was all you could come up with to respond.
He glanced at you briefly and gave you a shy side smile.
“So, I don’t tell anyone you ate with me, you don’t tell I have a fake girlfriend?” he said jokingly, knowing he was the one who persuaded you to eat with him in the first place.
You chuckled and stuck out your hand.
“Yeah. Deal?”
He put his hand in yours. It was warm and felt so strong against your small one.
“Deal.”
You were so thankful he didn’t seem upset about the whole thing. In fact, he almost seemed relieved that someone else knew now. In this short time spent with him you knew you were leaving with only high praises and positive thoughts of Jeon Jungkook.
“Well, I better get going,” you said, standing up from the stool. You grabbed all your supplies and looked back up him.
“Thank you, um, for the cereal and being so understanding about everything.”
He nodded at you.
“I will remember your schedule next time and not disturb you by being here, okay?”
You smiled.
“You didn’t disturb me, but okay.”
“Tuesdays at…umm what time do you get here?” he put his fingers between his brows in thought again.
“2pm.”
He grinned at you and gave you a thumbs up.
“Okay! Okay okay! I got it! Let’s get it!”
You laughed and he chuckled embarrassingly.
“Well it was nice to meet you, Jungkook. Take care.”
You gave him a little wave as you went to the front door, opening it and stepping out.
“You too, (y/n),” he called after you, “I’ll see you around.”

Last Boss/Takatora Samura × Reader
Warnings: Swearing, people tell you to shut up and are generally rude. As always, feel free to tell me if I missed any

"You're talking to much. Be quiet."
"There was a really long climb-"
"Do you ever shut up?"
"Oh! And there was a really pretty-"
"I stopped listening like... the second you started talking. Shut the fuck up for once."
You had only smiled and nodded, walking away from the people you called friends. You were just excited to talk to them about what had happened throughout the day. Of course, you weren't meaning to annoy your 'friends'. You were simply just a person with too much on their mind.
You couldn't sleep as you had a meeting in a little bit, so you decided to just start heading down. You put on a smile so no one thought anything was actually wrong, and started walking towards the meeting room. The last thing you wanted was for people to feel bad for you.
You stared off as you were walking, staying aware of everyone around you. There was really no one memorable around the Beach. Everyone was mostly all the same. Worker ants for the king of the Beach. Go out, risk your life, bring back cards. It was a constant loop. All the people were dressed the same, clad in bathing suits, and some even less than that. You liked the energetic things at the Beach though. Well, the music. That was one of the things Hatter had tastes on in your opinion. The only two people you could think of other than Hatter who were interesting and different were Last Boss and Niragi. But, you also valued your life enough to stay away from them. Although, your position as an executive member didn't work out for that.
Of course, Last Boss had noticed. He always saw you stare curiously, eyes tracing over his body as if to make sure he was real. At first he was weirded out, but then realized be had a hibit of staring at you. Maybe it was the way you would talk excitedly about any topic. But he also noticed the short moments before you put on a fake smile for your so called friends. He didn't hear what they would say, but he could tell it bothered you. Observance was something he was quite good at. Although, that being said, it didn't matter how much you stared, he could see the way you avoided him. As if you were scared of talking to him. Which, in his mind was very much understandable, but also made him question you more.
You pushed open the grand doors that lead into the meeting room, to see that there was only one other person there. One of the people you tried to avoid, yet couldn't help but be drawn to. "Hi Last Boss," you greeted, sitting down in a chair, looking down at the table. You never knew his real name, and he probably would never tell you, but you very much doubted that was his real name. You heard him say something back, and looked up. "I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that. What did you say?" You asked. 'Is she mocking me or did she genuinely not hear me?' He thought to himself. He shook his head, repeating his words, "I said hello. I was just responding to your words."
You nodded, an awkward silence taking up the room. There was also a feeling of tension in the air, as if he wanted to aproach you as much as you wanted to aproach him. You groaned internally, knowing making small talk would be the only way to break this feeling. "I guess we're both quite early, no? How are you today?" You asked, trying to break the silence. "I'm ok. Not dead, so that's a good thing, I guess," he responded. It made you laugh. The sound of your laughter filled the empty quiet, and you decided to sit closer by him. You stood from the seat you had taken at the end of the table, walking over and sitting in the seat next to him.
Your laughter confused him. He wasn't trying to be funny, he just said whatever he was thinking. "You're funny. I always used to think you were kind of scary, but interesting. Like where you learned how to use your katana, how you decided on those tattoos and all. What you did bac-" you rambled, stopping yourself, remembering what other had told you. You didn't want to bore him, or talk to much. You might actually have a chance to be friends with someone. "Why did you stop? You were talking, weren't you?" He questioned. Your eyes widened. "You want me to keep talking? Um... anything you want to hear about?" You asked, smiling widely. "About yourself?" He said. This was a test of sorts for him. Would you be a total narcissist and go on and on about yourself, or would you say a little bit and move on? "Well, let's see... My name is (L/N) (Y/N), I used to be a librarian... I love books, and could talk for hours on end about any topic except myself. That's about it for me... I'm not very interesting, " you responded bashfully. You passed the test. You didn't go dragging out the conversation about yourself.
"A librarian huh? What kind of books do you like?" He asked. Your eyes lit up. "I love all kinds of books. Fantasy, non-fiction, historical books. Any book you put in front of me, I will enjoy. Books and articles where people talked about their passions and went on about them were my favorites. I love hearing about people talking about their passions, their goals, their dreams, their favorite person. I would love to listen to someone ramble for hours about whatever nonsense they could come up with. Especially if it's something they hide from others. I would love to hear about every nerdy or geeky thing they wanted to talk about. Talk to me about that period in history, talk to me about your idol, talk to me about science, mountains, oceans. I don't care, as long as long as it's something they care about, I'll listen," you said, finishing off your rant. Your eyes widened, realizing you'd rambled. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to go off on that so long," you apologized. "No... it's fine. What about your favorite book?" He asked. If you could go off that long talking about just anything, you would definitely be entertaining. He wondered if what you had said was true. Would you really listen to anyone talk about any topic?
"My favorite book? I don't have one... I've read so many, and enjoyed them far to much to pick a favorite. Every book is different from each other as humans are. Of course, they can have similar concepts, but no two books are exactly the same. I love all books. Now, my favorite genre would have to be fantasy or fiction. Everything I read one of them, I feel I'm transported from my regular boring life, into a world of excitement. A world that serves as an escape. I guess that's why I read as well... to escape. Say, do you enjoy books? Or do you not particularly like reading? Or do you prefer writing? I've always wondered what it's like to be a writer, in control of what they write. Of their own little magical escape. A place of their own making. Did you ever wonder what would happen if you died without anyone having a memory of- sorry, I've done it again, I really do-" you rambled, stopping yourself again, before getting interrupted. "Keep talking. I like hearing you talk," he interrupted. You laughed, shaking your head. "Very funny. No one likes me talking. Don't I talk to much?" You questioned. "I wasn't joking. I like you talking, and you don't talk to much. You talk just enough," he said. You looked up, into his eyes. He wasn't lying. Was this what it felt like for someone to appreciate the conversations you had? For someone to listen without being rude? Was this what it felt like to be listened to? "Thank you... It really means a lot to me. I do have one question though," you said, your hands fidgeting in your lap. "I'll answer only if you say you'll keep talking. About whatever you want," he responded. "Ok, I promise... If you don't mind me asking, what's your real name? I know you go by Last Boss around here, but I really would like to know your proper name," you asked, looking at him. "Takatora Samura. Now, we have a deal... so... keep talking please."

You wrote about it in Harborage but now I want to know all the details: what went down during the great midterm fiasco of 1985? (In both timelines). Loving your fic, btw!
LOL, I figured that little moment might stick out and prompt questions. Glad you're enjoying the fic!
Some context for others: I headcanon Marty with ADHD & that Doc is the first one to put the pieces together regarding it. In my fic, during a conversation, Doc and Marty make reference to "The Midterm Fiasco of January 1985", which isn't elaborated on but is basically implied as being the event that prompts Doc to have a conversation with Marty regarding his suspicions.
Now, some details for you, anon. (I do have a whole backstory on it because I wrote a one-shot a while back that was similar-ish in concept, but I never posted it and probably won't at this point. So...here!) LONG post ahead...
Marty's staring down the barrel of midterm week, and he prepares accordingly by telling Doc he won't be by the garage for a while because he's going to be going straight home to study.
Doc is like, "Great, let me know if you need help," and when he doesn't see of hear from Marty, he assumes it means all is going well.
Until Marty comes flying through the garage door at full speed the weekend before his exams start, in a complete panic. He's all disheveled, and he drops his half open backpack to the ground and just sort of gives Doc this wide-eyed, deer-in-the-headlights look.
Doc figures Marty is overwhelmed or burnt out, so he assures his friend he can help and asks what subject Marty wants to focus on.
And Marty just stands there a moment and goes, "All of them." Which makes Doc go "????" because Marty's supposedly been at home studying all week, so he asks, hesitantly, if Marty has studied at all yet even though he knows the answer to that.
"Marty...what have you been doing all week??" Cue a distressed shrug from Marty and, "I DON'T KNOW."
No, really. Marty has no clue how he managed to somehow waste away the whole week, feeling stressed out of his mind but unable to open up a book. He kept telling himself he had time until oops, he's got less than two days before the tests and has done nothing.
Doc, of course, has seen this scenario before (albeit on a smaller scale with other assignments) so he calms things down first and then asks if he can take a look at Marty's exam schedule, his notes/study guides, etc.
Except...um...Marty doesn't have any of those things. He dumps out his backpack, which is pretty much just a mess of wrinkled papers, a hundred pencils, food wrappers, and probably a few things he thought he had lost a while back. Exam schedule? It's somewhere in his room. Maybe. Notes? They're sparse, and a lot of what he does have is disorganized or illegible. Study guide? HA!
After a nice, nutritious fast food meal and some time to regroup (and a trip to the McFly house so Marty can find his schedule), Doc helps him form a game plan and attempt to sort through what notes he does have, as well as zero in on the specific topics he most needs to focus on.
There's only so much Doc can do though, because Marty is attempting to cram like, 4 months worth of material into his brain at once which just...doesn't work. So, it's a very tumultuous week that Marty spends panic-studying at the garage and barely sleeping. And, as Marty is prone to do, he gets all caught up in the self-blame spiral, which does nothing to aid in his motivation.
Doc keeps helping to get him back on track, but he also kind of paces the garage, doing some work/small tasks and thinking through the whole situation. He's well aware of this familiar pattern of procrastination and last minute scrambling, as well as many of Marty's other tendencies and general quirks. The impulsiveness, the time blindness, distractibility, executive functioning issues, etc.
Doc had come across some literature on ADD a while back (which is what it was referred to as then. It was changed to ADHD in 1987) and he became fascinated with the topic, as well as the clear connection he saw to Marty. He'd kept the information to himself though, never quite sure if he should bring it up for fear of upsetting his friend and also the chance he could be wrong.
But as he stands by, listening to Marty complain and drown in stress, Doc is like, Okay, yeah, we're not doing this anymore, and sits Marty down for a chat.
He says that there could be an explanation for what's going on and slowly wades into the topic, explaining all the things he'd read and his own observations. Marty's heard of ADD, but at this point in the 80s, it's still regarded by many people as not even existing, and most cases that are acknowledged/treated are the most severe ones, primarily made up of really young kids (almost exclusively boys) who are "completely out of control" and have significant discipline problems. So, Marty sort of brushes him off at first, but as Doc continues to list facts and refer to his research, Marty can't deny that he identifies with most of the things he's hearing. Plus, he trusts that Doc wouldn't just toss something like this out there without having genuine reason to.
They talk for a really long time, and lightbulbs are just going off everywhere above Marty's head as he takes things in and is like, OH. Well...now what??
Unfortunately, because of the limited understanding of the condition by most people (and even professionals), lack of resources, and Marty's less than involved parents in the original timeline, there aren't a whole lot of viable options. So Doc turns the focus to strategies they can implement in order to help with those day to day tasks that are most difficult. But more than anything, Doc makes it clear to Marty that it doesn't make him "a slacker", that being differently wired isn't bad, and that he's incredibly bright and capable.
The conversation is a lot to take in, but it's a beneficial one. Marty is still very much Marty, and a lot of things stay the same, but feeling fully understood helps a lot. The fact that Doc is open about his own eccentricities and differences is an added bonus.
When all is said and done, Marty makes it through the whirlwind of a week with his sanity mostly intact. His grades aren't spectacular or anything, but he manages to pass every exam, and the week is soon fondly dubbed "The Midterm Fiasco of January 1985" by the both of them.

“I can never erase my past. But the present is my pen and I can write a better future. After all, I am the author of my life.”
It was written in capital letters.
‘Damn,’ you thought. ‘That hit hard.’ You read it over and over, trying to take every single word in. It was true and it really did hit you hard. You were not proud of your past, but you were trying to make amends now, and you hoped that it would lead to something better. And that is exactly why the quote felt like a sharp pang in your heart.
You were sitting down on the last step of the education building on campus. The notebook with the quote you have written lay on your lap like an open book. You had just finished your lunch and were waiting for your friend to arrive. Y/fn woke up too late for the morning sessions but you agreed to meet them when they said they were on their way.
You were chewing on your bottom lip, careful not to bite it too hard. That was a habit of yours. Whenever you were anxious, you would chew on your bottom lip, sometimes without even realizing it. But you were not anxious because your friend was going to be beside you any minute. No. It was because it would be the first time you would show your professor the children’s story you wrote. What made you even more nervous was that they were the next class you had.
Writing short stories was a passion of yours. You loved making up characters and scenarios in your head and would write them down on any scrap of paper you could find. But that was all you could do. You knew children’s books always had illustrations, unfortunately, you could not draw to save your life. You were thinking that perhaps when your story would be chosen for some award or anything, they would find you an illustrator. That was how it usually worked, right?
“Hey.” You snapped out of your thoughts, froze your teeth, and looked up. “You okay?”
“Hey,” you greeted back. You shook your head, closed the notebook, and placed it inside your bag. “I was just thinking,” you admitted. “About showing Professor Y/pn my work. You think they’ll like it?”
Y/fn sighed. “Of course, Y/n. We’ve gone over this before, haven’t we?”
You frowned. You didn’t like the way they said it. You shrugged and pretended not to care. “Right. Okay. Let’s just get to class.”
You both walked up the steps and waited for an elevator to bring you up to your floor. Once you arrived inside the classroom, you noticed that some of your classmates were not in yet but your professor was fiddling around with their laptop. You placed your book down on the table, took out your binder filled with your writings -- and you could proudly say that you filed them by title in alphabetical order -- and took a deep breath before walking up to the front of the class.
You cleared your throat and called them, “Professor Y/pn?” That came out more like a squeak rather than the tone of voice you would give when you wanted to start a casual conversation.
Your professor turned to their side and smiled at you. “Yes, Ms. Y/ln? What can I do for you?”
“Well...uh, I was wondering if you could take a look at one of my written works. I need a professional’s opinion so that I know where I can improve on and all that. I mean, if it’s not too much trouble for you.”
“Of course, of course!” they said with a grin. “No problem at all, Ms. Y/ln. I’m honestly surprised that you came to me for a new point of view.”
“No one better than my favorite professor,” you said, copying their grin. “And I’m not just saying.” You giggled.
Your professor laughed. “Well, alright then. Which one should I check out?” They beckoned you to give them your binder and you obliged. “Oh, this is a little heavy,” they chuckled as they held your binder. “You must be quite a writer. Well, you always have been one of my top students in my class.”
“Just here,” you mumbled. “Not so much the others.” You took a deep breath and exhaled. “I was hoping you could look at The Bee and the Queen. Though maybe just that for now, I don’t really have much confidence with the others yet.”
Your professor waved their hand. “Right, of course. I promise not to pry. Do you mind if you leave this with me for now? I’ll give it back after class.”
You saw this as some sort of sign of commitment. Maybe, if they liked your story, they would be willing to work with you. “Yes!” you nearly shouted. “I mean, yes, professor. I’d really love that.”
They smiled. “Alright, I’ll check out The Bee and the Queen and I’ll jot down some notes.”
“Ehrm….”
“On another piece of paper, of course,” they laughed. “Don’t worry, even without the look on your face, I wasn’t going to write it on something so precious.”
You sighed in relief. “Thank you, Professor Y/pn. Thank you so much.”
They nodded. “Off you go, class is about to begin.”
The whole two hours class seemed even longer than usual. Your knee bounced constantly and you kept looking at your watch every minute. There was a seatwork, an essay about children and why they were more inclined to language at a certain age, and at some point, you looked up and saw your professor with their reading glasses on and had your binder open. Finally, the class was dismissed and you waited a bit, hoping for them to call you.
“I’ll go ahead,” Y/fn informed you.
“Sure,” you replied without looking at them.
As your classmates left, your professor smiled and gestured for you to come to them. You pursed your lips and briskly walked to them. “Well?” you asked. “Sorry, that came out a bit rude.”
They shook their head. “Well, Ms. Y/ln. I do like the concept and your style, but we need more creativity. I’m not saying that this isn’t creative, no, not all. But remember these are children we’re talking about. They need something that will catch their attention. They need to stay focused. I’m happy that you managed to apply the moral of the story in examples at the end. But again, put some more sugar in it. You get what I mean?”
“I think so.” You nodded.
They smiled. “I’ll give you a week to come up with something new. And if I’m impressed, you can work with an acquaintance of mine.”
Your eyes widened. “Really?”
“Just show me what you got,” they said with a smile.
“Yes, Professor! I’ll think of something way beyond creative, I promise.”
“Let’s start small, Ms. Y/ln.” They chuckled. “We’ll work our way up as we go along.”
You nodded excitedly. “I won’t let you down, Professor. I promise!” You reached for your binder and bowed. “Thank you!”
They chuckled once more. “Go on now, Ms. Y/ln. You’ll be late for your next class.”
You ran to your seat, grabbed your bag, and waved at them. “Thank you!”
Days later, you were in a coffee shop. You were going to meet up with Y/bfn and you two would be brainstorming on how to make your story better. You already had a concept, you just needed to write down how you were going to execute it. Luckily, your best friend knew you all too well.
You had just gotten the tray with both yours and your best friend’s drink -- because really, you two knew each all too well, too. The place was packed and you had a hard time looking for a vacant table. When you did spot one, as soon as you reached it, another person had arrived as well.
“Oh. I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you were eyeing the table, too.”
You looked to your side to see a tall, blonde boy with very nice blue eyes. He, too, was holding a tray with two drinks. “You can have it,” you said. You didn’t know why but you were feeling a little bit bitter. “It’s fine.”
“No, no, please. Take it.” He tilted his head to gesture to the table. “It’s fine. I’ll just stay by the bar. My sister wouldn’t be here for a while, anyway.”
You brightened a little. “Neither is my friend.”
He smiled. “So…?”
You blushed a little. “I...I guess we can share for now?”
He nodded. “Yeah, that’d be nice.” He waved his hand to allow you to sit first. As soon as you both placed your trays on the table and sat down, he introduced himself. “I’m Peter.” He held up his hand for you to shake.
“Y/n,” you replied and shook his head. 
“Do I know you from somewhere, madam?” he asked.
“Does that line always work for you, sir?” you giggled and rolled your eyes.
He had nice hands. A little calloused but still nice. “I...um...do you live around here?” The shop you were in was inside a subdivision and you haven’t seen anyone as beautiful as him. ‘Oh shut up.’ You were always around thanks to your best friend living around the corner and you pretty much have seen everyone.
He shook his head. “My sister has a friend who lives here. I was in the area and she said we should all hang out for coffee.”
“Oh.” You nodded. “My best friend lives around here. I’m always here. Maybe that’s why I don’t recognize you.”
He nodded. “I’m from the other side of town, actually. Well, my job brings me everywhere so I guess it depends.” He chuckled as did you. “I’m an engineer.”
“Education grad student,” you said. “I work part-time as a PA for my parents. I mean, I was willing to do it for free since they are my parents but they sort of bribed me and said they’d be paying my tuition instead, so….” You didn’t know why this was embarrassing for you to admit.
“Mind if I ask what kind of business your parents run?”
“It’s a multinational company.” ‘Stop being embarrassed, it’s the truth for goodness sake.’ “Y/cn.”
“Oh! Yeah! I know that.”
You forced a smile. “Yup.” You two became silent and you began chewing on your bottom lip but you immediately stopped. It was getting a bit awkward so you decided to get your drink and tried to open it. Unfortunately, it was sealed too tight. Peter could definitely see you struggling, he offered for him to try and held out his hand.
When you gave it to him, you came into contact with his skin.
“It worked on you, didn’t it?” he said with a goofy grin.
You laughed at his confidence. “Not really.”
“Ah! But that usually means it did but not so much.”
You scoffed. “It means no.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“Well you should.”
Once he was able to open it, he gave it back to you. Your pinky touched his index finger.
“Oh stop it!” You stomped your foot and folded your arms.
“That’s not very lady-like,” he said.
“I don’t care.” You stuck up your nose. “You are impossible.”
“I would like to say that I am impossible to others. I’m always possible when it comes to you.”
“For some strange reason that makes sense.”
He chuckled. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to get your dress dirty. No need to get all stubborn with me.”
You pouted. “I am not being stubborn.”
“Oh yes, you are.”
You sighed in frustration. “You are impossible, Peter Pevensie.”
“Thank you.” You took a sip and subtly watched him drink his. “I didn’t expect them to take this long.”
“Same,” he murmured. He checked his phone and excused himself.
You watched him leave and then you were left alone. You thought of the surge of electricity that you felt whenever you came into contact with one another. Did he feel it, too? Goosebumps crept up to you and you shuddered. “Stop it, Y/n.”
Peter came back and smiled. “They’re almost here.”
“Oh, that’s good.” Then you realized how that may have sounded. “Not that I didn’t enjoy your company, Peter.”
He chuckled. “Don’t worry about it.”
‘And I like your company a little too much, even if it did get a bit awkward.’
The door of the store opened and you saw your best friend enter.
“Oh, there's Y/bfn,” you said. You waved your hand for them to see you. Your best friend found your signal and walked up to you with a smile.
“Ah, and there’s my sister,” Peter announced. Behind your best friend was another girl around your age. She was very pretty. “Oh.”
You looked at him as he said that. There was a slight tone to it but you couldn’t figure out what. You looked back at your best friend. “Oh.”

15. What’s the weirdest fandom you’ve ever written for?
um, Five Nights At Freddy's??? like once, when i was 11 and getting into fanfiction, my friend asked me to write about a pairing (don't recall which) (thank gods i deleted all my old works). never interacted with the fandom because everyone seemed too chaotic, didn't have any real knowledge about the series, and probably never will. ☀️
22. Do you listen to anything while you write?
Yes! most times i can't concentrate or get in the right mood without listening to something, so i have playlists for 1) specific pieces, 2) general concepts, 3) a few moods, 4) a few pairings, and 5) improvising, just going with the flow. that's why many of my drafts are either songfics or have names of songs as their titles! music is totally a part of my creative process, and has always been <3

2. Why do you write fanfiction?
well... i started writing fanfiction because i knew i wanted to write, but i didn't necessarily want to get into original stuff. it was interesting to see the universes i liked grow inside of me and detach from their original form. it felt important to share my view of the characters, my twists in the story, and the other creative nonsense in my head. i wanted to get tropes, even overused ones, and see how i would explore and execute those. and honestly, i think i started just because i wanted to express myself, in general.
but now i don't write because of that, at least not entirely and not most importantly. i now write because i have barely ever read myself and my queer experiences in a book. while i still want to share my interpretations of the characters and, as i unfortunately tend to get into fandoms with problematic creators, i still want to figure out how their universe would develop in my point of view, not theirs the main thing is: i want more rep out there for people like me, and, selfishly enough, for myself. and i think the best way is to get characters i love (even though i might not love canon, or even them in canon) and immerse them into my reality – which is very much queer. i also write because i need to stop demanding too much from myself – so i get to leave things incomplete, and i get to accept i'm never going to write something absolutely perfect. i write for myself, i get to know myself better writing.

Leverage Season 2, Episode 6, The Top Hat Job, Audio Commentary Transcript
Dean: Hello I’m Dean Devlin, Executive Producer.
Christine: I’m Christine Boylan, one of the writers.
Peter: Peter O’Fallon, Director.
John: John Rogers, Executive Producer.
Scott: Scott Veach, the other writer.
Chris: Chris Downey, Executive Producer. And this is the Top Hat Job.
John: See, I was hoping we’d pretend that there were like twelve more people [All Laugh] in this, like, baffling list. Uh, the Top Hat Job was born actually of two things. One, Scott Veach, who’s a name you haven’t heard before on the show, came in as a freelancer to pitch a magician show. And at the same time, Tim Hutton had said that he would like to play a magician.
[Chris and Christine Laugh]
John: And Tim makes very few requests of us, so it seemed like not a bad idea. The question is, of course, well, how would you go about doing this? Um either Christine or Scott, can you tell me where we got the villain from?
Christine: Uh... where did- where did we get the villain from?
John: I think it was-
Christine: Uh, was a-
Scott: Oh, yeah.
Christine: -magazine article. Again, I believe Albert Kim brought that into the room- 
John: Yes.
Christine: -a lot of these, this season we all had a hand in everything and I love that. Albert brought in this article about a foods company that was knowingly putting out salmonella-laced meals, frozen meals on the market and we were just really upset. 
John: As a matter of fact, the really ridiculous villainous thing we have this guy say, which is, ‘You’re supposed to cook it to this temperature. It’s on the package; that’s why we’re not liable’ is something that company actually said-
Christine: Completely true.
John: Without mentioning the fact that even in their laboratories, they could never get it that hot.
[All Chuckle]
John: So these guys, the real life villains, are far worse than the enormously cartoonish evil guys we have in this show. 
Christine: Absolutely.
John: And now, who’s this actress?
Chris: This is, uh, Jennifer, uh… Skyler.
John: Chris always has the cast list, thats-
Chris: Yes, I got my cast list right here. This is Jennifer Skyler, she’s a local Portland actress, and tried out and was fantastic.
Peter: She did a great job.
John: Now Peter, this, y’know, I think this is another one we really cast almost entirely out of Portland, right?
Peter: All but the bad guy. I think the bad guy-
Chris: I think so, yeah. I think- 
Dean: Yeah, yeah.
John: What was it like working with, like, the Portland humans, Peter?
Peter: Overall it was pretty good. We had a little bit of uh, well, you know, and it turned out very well, thank you.
[All Laugh]
John: We got a state grant on the line here, Peter, so don’t screw this up for us, man.
Peter: No, she was- she was great, she was uh, she did a really good job. The concept was to try to add as much pressure to her so that you’d have compassion for her, and as you can see right where we are right now, she does a very good job of it.
John: And during the uh, during the... um, horrible credit sequence we all hate.
[Christine Laughs]
John: And I can say that, ‘cause it’s the DVD, they’ve already bought it.
Peter: Saga sell.
[All Laugh]
John: Yeah, it’s the saga sell. That’s actually, you know Pete, it’s the first time somebody’s brought up the phrase ‘saga sell’. Uh, who wants to define the ‘saga sell’ for the nice folks?
Peter: That was uh, I did the show The Riches and that was the bane of our existence, was trying to sell what the show is about, that’s what the saga sell-
John: In thirty seconds you have to remind new viewers what the show is about, and annoy old viewers.
Christine: Wow.
John: And now, why is this scientist drinking? Someone tell me that.
Christine: Because her last name is Jameson.
[All Laugh]
Christine: You’re welcome.
Chris: I believe that was your addition to the- to the character, wasn’t it? I mean- 
Christine: I do like naming characters, yes.
Chris: She was initially known as ‘plucky research girl’, I believe?
John: Science girl. Plucky science girl.
Christine: Many variations on that.
Chris: And then a lot of the- there was a big cry out in the development of the story: “more plucky science girl!” And I think Christine, you added the little wrinkle that she likes to— likes to drink a few.
Christine: She does like to drink a few. I’m a big fan of uh—
Peter: Drink a lot.
Christine: Yeah, she does like to drink a lot. Um, I’m a big fan of victims who like to get involved and crusade a little bit and we hadn’t had one in a while, so getting her involved was a lot of fun.
John: It’s always tricky, because the victim, in theory, you don’t want to endanger these innocent people who’ve always been in some sort of danger, but if you don’t check in with them or don’t make them present in the story, they disappear.
Christine: But she’s plucky, has no discernible friends or family, and is a drunk, [All Laugh] so I think it’s okay that we go ahead and, you know, put her in danger.
Peter: And we decided on the set to have her play that— she’s playing really, uh, she really enjoys Tim’s company; would like to be with Tim a lot more than she’s letting on.
John: Well, you know, Tim’s a dreamy guy, right?
Christine: He is.
John: You know, when I use his photo and pretend to be him on the internet, I do very well. 
[All Laugh]
Scott: I do that same thing!
John: Yeah, exactly, there’s a lot of guys pretending to be Tim Hutton on the internet, so if you ever get something dirty from Tim Hutton on the internet, it might not be him. 
[All Laugh]
Christine: The actual Tim Hutton [unintelligible].
Chris: Interesting thing in his little reaction here. When I was watching this, it really, it took me back to Ordinary People because, remember him playing flustered, in Ordinary People, around the girl?
John: Yeah.
Chris: It’s very much, you see it on his face right here.
Peter: Little nervous.
Chris: It’s kinda right there-
Christine: Yeah, there’s an ‘aw shucks’ quality to it. I love it.
John: And it was interesting because, trying to get the Sophie character, trying to reconcile like what was going on here, was the understanding that they had screwed up whatever they’d kind of had first season. And so this is the phase where, you know, even if Sophie doesn’t necessarily want to see Nate off with somebody else, she knows he has to at least have some sort of human relationship—
Christine: Mhm.
John: — that this isolation that he’s engaged himself in will eventually, you know, isn’t healthy, and it is, as a matter of fact, what eventually destroys him over the course of the second season.
Christine: Mhm. Spoiler. [Laughs]
Peter: And she’s also trying to uh—
John: I think people know it’s not ending well. [Christine Laughs]
Peter: And she’s trying to break his balls a little by leaving him there alone.
John: Yeah, yeah, exactly. And that’s great, that’s— this take goes forever.

Christine: Yeah, he has this nice uncomfortable beat.
John: And still—
[All Laugh]
Scott: Ooooooh…
Peter: Well… so… uh.
Christine: Been on that date. 
[All Laugh]
Peter: What about them Yankees? How ‘bout those Yankees? [More Laughter] So, you gonna make a move there, son? [laughter continues]
John: So—
Peter: No, I’m not.
John: No, no. Aaand thank you, sir.
Christine:And, leave the bottle.
John: Another drink.
Chris: One more drink.
[All Laugh]
John: Yeah she’s gonna be very lonely, looking like that, drunk, in a bar in Boston. She’s not gonna do well. Uh, this is actually interesting. Now, Scott, you wrote a big chunk of this sequence, if I remember correctly. This is interesting, this is not something we usually see on the show; uh, why don’t you tell us about it?
Scott: You mean where, where they’re failing?
John: Yes. But Scott—
Scott: They never fail!
John: Scott came in and made the characters you love suck. Now Scott, explain why you did that.
Scott: [Laughs] Uh, yeah. No, but it was, you know, I think it was a, it was a group idea. But it was- the idea was it’d be really fun to see them get overconfident, and to see what happens when, you know; it’s usually, they’re so good at everything that they do, what happens when that sort of falls apart and how do they react? And so we thought it’d be really fun to see what that looks like.
John: How did you— how many takes to get him to balance the damn ball on his forehead?
Peter: We stuck it to his head. [John laughs]
Christine: Aww, that’s adorable.
Scott: There’s some, there’s some tape under there.
Peter: The other one too, is a- the- the bandana on his head is covering a scar—
Christine: Oh, yes, he is.
John: Oh, this was this episode.
Peter: — that was left because, in one of the fights he got caught and got stitches.
Chris: We’ll get to that; that’s a good story there.
Christine: This is the one, yeah.
Peter: So we added the scarf to cover the stitches.
John: Yeah, and it’s also, it’s interesting because it is- it is something they’re doing, and you know, when he says after Tim walks in, you know, there’s no blueprint fairy. The idea is, this scene, all this act here, is what happens in act zero of every other show. Like in every other show, they’re doing this, they’re showing up as pizza guys, they’re getting sketches of buildings and stuff, we just never bother to see it because this time they, they—
Dean: Actually this particular scene here was not actually, was not in the episode—
Scott: Oh, that’s right.
Dean: — when we came in, when we came in short, [All Laugh] we added this scene, and one of the things I’m so proud about is that it seamlessly goes into this scene, which was part of the show—
Chris: That I could not believe.
Dean: And it actually ended up adding a very nice-
John: The other side of the door, that first side of the door was shot how many months after the- this side of the door?
Dean: About a month.
Scott: Probably a month, it was probably about a month. And see if you can track, uh, Gina’s pregnancy there.
[All Laugh]
Scott: It’s an interesting thing.
John: Yeah, it’s really— you’re kind of in a medium-close there. There she’s okay.
Christine: She’s glowing, she’s gorgeous.
John: She is glowing.
Peter: We decided to give Tim a lot of movement here because the concept is, he knows it’s all gonna go bad—
John: Yeah.
Peter: — they don’t.
Scott: He’s convinced it’s gonna go bad; he’s gonna sit down and wait.
John: Well, in the research, it was a little stunning. When we started investigating these food companies, because, you know, in the show it’s always, how do you have a threat? And uh, the scale— the amount of money that these guys throw around, is truly boggling, and the depths to which they will go to cover up their maleficence is uh, it’s… they’re not putting people in shallow graves, but they’re ruining people’s lives.
Peter: Did you notice his name?
John: What’s that?
Peter & Christine: Oleg.
John: Oleg, why?
Peter: I dunno.
[All Laugh]
Christine: Damn sexy name.
Scott: Yeah, I don’t think that was in the script.
John: I like that it’s “Super Hot Pizza”, because you wouldn’t want to buy another kind.
Dean: But I also notice that this- this entire sequence, the camera never stops moving, and it— just love the way you use the camera in this sequence.
Peter: Try to keep the heat going on, the pressure.
John: Now when you’re planning on shooting something that cross cuts between two to three situations, I mean, you know, are you trying to match actual camera left-to-right movement? Or do you just keep it in motion and assume that when you’re cutting it that’s gonna play?
Peter: I try to match it, right-to-left. You know, the idea was that Tim’s static, and he’s just sitting there doing, uh, you know, he’s confident about what’s going on while the rest of them are panicking.
John: He’s Reed Richards back there, he knows.
Scott: It’s like his version of TV, to watch this.
Peter: Exactly.
John: Nice fight, by the way.
Scott: By the way, this was literally maybe twelve hours after he’d gotten stitched up, he did this fight.
Peter: If that, yeah.
Christine: He is a superhero, seriously.
Peter: He takes it very seriously.
John: I always say, shit kicker is genetic.
Dean: And I think that’s our first ‘in the nuts’ shot of the series.
John: I think it is.
Peter: I like to do those nut shots.
Christine: Nice.
John: That was in your contract.
Dean: And I love the whole Parker thing here, this whole Parker exchange here was just inspired.
John: Yes, her idea of witty banter just doesn’t quite cut it.
[All Laugh]
John: But yeah, neither one really gets it.
Christine: Who put Parker in the glasses? A+. She looks great.
John: Thanks for bringing the lesbian vibe tonight, Christine.
Christine: You know, I’m here, you know, I’m representing all kinds of people.
Chris: Here’s another shot.
John: Nice green screen. Have you not seen that nice green screen? Nice green screen shot. Um yeah, there’s a lot of green screen in this one actually, just because there’s a lot of Parker hanging places.
Dean: I love this Aldis ending here, trying to, like, put a good spin on it.
[All Laugh]
Peter: And Aldis was quite at adding little quips here and there, and the fun stuff.
John: Yeah, a lot of— by this point, these actors know these characters well enough that, you know, a lot of times you’re just trying to get out of their way when they’re on pace.
Peter: This was a note that Chris gave me, which I loved, which is that they’re, like, children.

Chris: They’re siblings.
Peter: And Tim’s the father.
Chris: And Dean, you were here for this, I believe—
Dean: I was here for the poking.
Chris: And I think that I gotta give you credit for kinda, getting the whole poking thing. You know, ‘Stop it. Stop it. Stop it.’
Dean: Yeah, we just wanted to get that vibe of ‘Daaad.’
[All Laugh]
Peter: ‘He’s bugging me, stop it!’
John: The ice thing we actually established early in the season; the idea that they’re constantly raiding Nate’s apartment for the tools- his life has turned upside down, at some point, three AM, he will wake up and they will be in his apartment, like, bandaging themselves up with his stuff.
Christine: Eating cereal.
John: Yes, eating cereal. He has not had ice for a drink in, like, four months; it’s all for Eliot’s bruises.
Scott: ‘She’s poking me!’
[All Laugh]
Peter: ‘Leave me alone, dad.’
Dean: Love it.
John: Now, this whole section where they introduce how we get the information because these guys couldn’t get in, uh, Erik with a ‘k’.
Christine: Always evil.
Peter: I love the reaction with the ‘k’, too, here, that she’s uh, ‘I didn’t know that.’
[All Laugh]
Dean: And she goes, ‘Everyone knows that.’ [All Laugh] And he’s like, ‘What the fuck?‘
Christine: I got a lot of weird Facebook messages after this aired, by the way, from Eriks with ‘k’s.
John: You actually get all three character’s attitudes flawlessly there, which is: Parker just lives in a slightly different world, it’s about ten degrees off of everyone else; and Sophie treats her like its just, oh, I didn’t know it was that way in your world; while Nate, Nate is the only sane man in an insane world.
Chris: Here, look at this, we gotta give credit to Apollo Robbins, here. Apollo gave us [unintelligible].
Dean: I love this camera work, I love this idea of attaching the camera to the packet.
John: What is it? Is it just a button cam, or…?
Peter: Eh, we just attached the camera with a c-stand onto the box itself.
John: Oh cool. Um, that whole trojan horse thing comes from Apollo Robbins.
Chris: Apollo Robbins, our consultant, gives us all kinds of, you know-
Peter: And you will see a short little cameo of him in the back in one of the scenes.
John: Oh cool!
Peter: We’ll point him out.
Chris: We’ll talk more about him later.
[All Laugh]
Peter: Oh that was a great idea. Speedos are always good.
John: But there’s a hacker conference in vegas called DefCon every year, and that year, the trojan bluetooth cellphone happened to be the big thing of that year, so we ganked that. Um, you know, we really should, like McGuyver, leave out one crucial element, because we have taught people to do fairly horrible things on this show, and only later do we realize, oh we…we taught them exactly how to do that.
[All Laugh]
John: We should have rethought that.
Dean: Oops.
John: And then they’re talking about the horrible corporate meeting.
Chris: I think that was- Albert Kim, who worked at Time Warner and their magazines for many years, introduced us to the state of the company meeting, where they often have magicians. That was, kind of, what brought the whole episode together.
John: And remember, I had done a bunch of those, and that’s why as soon as Albert said that, I was like oh god, I actually did one of these shows when they announced layoffs right before I went on.  
Christine: That was a great day in their world.
Peter: Well that’s a tough room.
Chris: Because folks, surprisingly, to do a show - a heist/con show involving a magician, is not the easiest thing in the world.
[All Laugh]
John: No, really, oddly enough.
Chris: When that’s your mandate…
John: Yeah, we don’t usually start backwards like that, but you know what, this actually turned out pretty coherent, considering.
Dean: I love this whole magic bit here, I think this was inspired.
Christine: This kid’s great.
John: This guy is so- now why are they dressed like fif- by the way, Parker and Hardison here are either, a) dressed like a fifties’ couple or b) like the couple from Thriller, from the horror movie Thriller.
Christine: I thought b), I thought we were going for that-
Dean: They are college kids.
John: They’re college kids, is that how the flappers are dressing now?
Chris: This is Tim Gouran as Chronos.
John: [wheezing] Chronos… Oh the nipple rings are horrifying.
Christine: They’re fantastic.
Peter: The guy does- the guy’s channelling...what’s his name?
All: Chris Angel.
Peter: The way he does the movement, and all of that, we asked him to just study him and go wild with it.
Christine: I remember his audition tape; made me laugh.
Peter: I love that she’s reluctant to go up to the- first she goes, ‘Oh no no no, I don’t wanna go-’
Christine: ‘No, I don’t like magic-’
John: God, he’s so cheesy- oh man, and then him showing her exact- and that’s the- it’s interesting that the entire show’s, kind of, about trade secrets. Because you know, the whole idea is the advantage these characters have is, they know how these tricks work, which is a trade secret. Wow, that’s a really creepy look.
[All Laugh]
John: “Silence!”
Scott: Oh, he was great.
John: I almost enjoy this sequence more without words. Seriously, I’m like half a Guinness in and I’m loving this.  
Chris: And kudos to the assistant, giving the bored reactions.
Peter: She’s just bored out of her mind.
John: I believe that’s actually in the script, right? ‘Even his assistant doesn’t like him.’
Peter: ‘That’s my girlfriend; that’s her up there, quit looking.’
Chris: A lot of great ad libs here from them.
John: Again, this is one of those places where when it’s, you know, Aldis and Beth, you just kinda get out of their way, and you assume it’s gonna work out.

Dean: He’s so over the top; it’s awesome.

Christine: Apollo.
Peter: He helped him out with all these, how they do it.
Chris: He designed the box. I mean he did so much; he added so much to this episode.
Peter: That was a mistake, and it was hilarious, you know, with the sword; she grabbed it and pulled it in, and I thought it was hilarious.
John: No, I’m actually- I’m friends with David Ackroyd who designs tricks for Penn & Teller, and the whole, sort of, the loathing for stage magicians that these guys have is hilarious. Oh, the eskimo kisses. And the rings. Yup, I think we went through a whole day of, like, looking at tricks and seeing what could malfunction in the most annoying way.
Christine: That was an odd day of YouTube clips, I’ll tell you. We went down the rabbit hole there.
John: No odder than usual, really.
Christine: No odder than usual, it’s true.
Chris: I love the way this actor dropped the character at one point, like “stop it!”
John: That’s really, that’s dark, ‘cause now I can actually- now as he runs off-
Peter: ’Is there a surgeon? Is there a surgeon?’
John: Like, with Parker actually trapped in the box still, nice. And, another innocent human destroyed in our quest for justice.
Christine: Not so innocent. Not so innocent.
John: Yeah, that’s true.
Christine: He was sexually harassing his assistant, I believe it says in the text.
Chris: Here’s George Castillo, who’s playing Dan Markland, head of security, who is our bad guy’s henchman.
John: He’s the Busey. We can say Busey, Busey is the word we use all the time-
Peter: And here’s Tim, having fun.
Christine: Oh no.
John: If you haven’t heard the first season DVDs, the Busey is based on Gary Busey’s character in Lethal Weapon.
Dean: Are those Apollo’s hands?
Chris: Those are Apollo’s hands.
John: Uh, who is the thug who brings physical violence so that the main bad guy doesn’t have to. Yes, that’s Apollo doing the close up stuff. Although Tim did a little bit of it; Tim really got into it.  
Dean: Oh, he was into it.
Peter: And again, Tim handled this so well, the idea that the- they just start pushing away and go through it all- they just start pushing their way in.
John: Yeah, exactly. Well, that’s the, you know, all of heist and confidence shows are just, just keep it moving so people can’t ask questions.
Dean: And carefully placing Gina behind the box.
[All Laugh]
Peter: She’s always carefully placed, you’ll notice.
Christine: We couldn’t have laundry in this one, so we, you know.  
John: What is Beth- what is Beth wearing?
Dean: This got more and more obvious as the season went on.
Peter: I’ll bet.
John: Beth is like Neil Gaiman’s Death back there.
Christine: I know, I love it. Again, A+ Parker look right here. Just, all these Parker outfits are terrific.
John: And it’s interesting, it’s really interesting because you got, everyone’s got a very distinct look; in particular I love Aldis in the suit, as the engineer, as the kind of like.. you know, you can totally see how that character lives his life. He dresses up, he goes to these shows, he’s actually based- that character’s based on a British fictional character called Jonathan Creek, which is a British mystery show about a guy who designs magic tricks. He’s not the magician, he’s the guy who designs the impossible and he solves impossible crimes, and you know, when you have five humans, coming up with a role for everyone to play, never easy. That’s why Chris is actually in the box.
Peter: Oh, this is the rabbit gag.
Christine: Oh, the rabbit. I love the camera work here.
Chris: And this is all one shot, watch, watch this.
Dean: This is a beautiful steadicam shot.
Peter: Our steadicam operator was, uh, a bit nervous when we started, but- except for this.   
Dean: Oh, this is awesome; one of my favorite flashbacks.
John: Now this- And we have not done a lot of the flashes this year-
Christine: Look at their face. [All Laugh] That’s great.
Scott: That was my mom’s favorite moment.
Christine: “It’s not the same thing.“
Chris: And the rabbit’s gone.
John: That was actually written as just an anecdote, and then we hadn’t done a flash in so long, it’s like, you know what, what the hell, let’s bury a kid.
Dean: And what’s the story with the girl who played Parker? Wasn’t there a story behind that? That she didn’t get to do that part in a different episode?
Chris: I think that’s right, she got cut out earlier.
John: Yeah, she got cut from the MMA one, the flashback of Parker’s first concert. And then, so instead, we gave this one where we buried her alive, in a backyard in Vancouver, Washington.
Christine: That girl’s adorable.
Chris: Backyard? That was a public park.
[All Laugh]

John: ‘Hi, uh, listen, we’re the film department. We’d like to bury a twelve year old girl alive in a public park, if you can-’
Christine: ‘Great, great, we’ll get you a brunette, we’ll get you a redhead-’
Peter: I actually had a bet with the location department, because I’ve been all over the world shooting, where you could never dig a park up. In Portland you can.
John: No, they’re very happy to have us there.
Chris: We have eminent domain powers in Portland.
[All Laugh]
John: ‘We’re here seize your home.’ ‘What?’
Scott: We’re like diplomats.
John: To be fair, we couldn’t have made this year without Portland. I mean, seriously, the locations we got?
Peter: No.
John: Oh yeah. ‘Where’s the rabbit?’ Nice running gag, by the way, I don’t believe that was in the script?
Peter: No, that was just [unintelligible].
Chris: Nah, that came up on set.

John: Nice. You didn’t actually lose the rabbit, did you?
Peter: No. No white rabbits were harmed filming this show.
John: Now, have you shot a con or heist show before?
Peter: Uh, I did The Riches.
John: The Riches, yeah. So— but that’s almost more of a character piece, than a— ‘cause they, they’re, he’s running a long con, but not—
Peter: Yeah, big tycoon, he’s lying to everyone all the time.
John: Yeah, exactly. Was there any—
Peter: Not quite this… this…
John: Yeah this is more heisty, y’know, was there any prep you did coming into this, just like looking at stuff, or, uh-? I’m always curious, because we have different directors come in, it’s a very different kind of show. It’s not like, say, ER, where it’s the hospital, there are doctors—
Peter: Everybody runs a steadicam shot all the way through.
John: Yeah, exactly.
Peter: No, actually, I just uh— I watched the, like, five shows that Dean had sent me, and in the big picture I got the idea, I mean the concept. Also, I love that Tim wanted to do the magic so badly that we ended up writing, what, four or five more pages that we shot for days on end. But it was great; it was really fun. And for me it was all movement; the whole show is about movement.
John: Yeah.
Peter: And we added a whole bunch of guards everywhere so, I wanted to have an extra pressure all the time, so every time they step around the corner there’s more security people walking around, so it appears as though—
Dean: I love this guy, who played the uh, the CFO.
Christine: Oh, yeah.
Chris: This is, uh, Jack Armstrong, another local Portland actor.
Dean: This bit was great, what was the story behind this bit?
John: I actually dropped this one in the script based on a guy who had been driving around, um, San Francisco with a RFID receiver, ganking people’s passport numbers out of their pockets. He was, like, driving around in a car, and the RFID chips were giving off enough of a signal that he could read their data as he drove by.
Peter: God.
John: So getting your car to do it was a piece of cake. I mean, getting your phone to do it at that range, eminently believable. That is one of the things about this show, is you spend an awful lot of time telling America they’re nowhere near as safe as they think they are.
[All Laugh]
Peter: This uh, this gag in the elevator, uh, the giant bar broke, and damn near took off… uh, who’s head?
John: Aldis?
Peter: Aldis, and Chris, actually. Both of them.
John: No, don’t hurt Aldis. I mean Chris, has the shit-kicker genes; he heals in like a day. Seriously he’s got some weird Wolverine stuff going on, but now, don’t bang Aldis up, man. You know, that’s weird, that happened on a pilot I shot in San Diego. They had a wire rig for two thousand pounds, had two hundred and twenty pounds of people on it, snapped, put them through like fifteen feet; dropped them right through the ceiling of a hut they were supposed to fall through. Now luckily, they were supposed to fall through the hut, so we got the shot.
Peter: Right.
John: And they were fine. [Laughs] But the point is—
Peter: Well, we had one take, we had one take of this, that’s it.
Scott: Yeah, this is it.
Peter: Luckily it worked really well.
Dean: Oh this is great, uh, falling through the, uh…
Chris: The elevator shaft.
Dean: The elevator shaft. Now part of the- this gag actually came because of TNT, right? What was the story behind that?
Chris: TNT said, ‘How come the in the script it just has him falling up? And we suggest her falling through the elevator shaft.’ And we said, ‘Well, if you’d like to pay for a shot of them falling through the elevator shaft, [All Laugh] we’d be happy to shoot it.’ And credit to TNT, they did.
Dean: That’s so great.
Peter: And I love– again, they’re arguing like — they’re back at arguing like kids, about who goes out and what they do and how they handle it.
Dean: Yeah, I love Eliot’s one, it’s like, ‘Who wants to be me? I punch people.’
Chris: ‘I get punched and kicked.’
John: That’s it. That is his lot in life, man, and he knows it.
Peter: And this was actually a auditorium from a large corporation.
John: Yeah. This is how they do those shows, man; those shows are death. They’re a lot of money, but they are death.
Chris: Hook it to something. There we go.
John: Now you shoot— Now, when you’re shooting up, this is green-, this is all computer generated right?
Chris: There we go.
John: But when you’re shooting up through the top of the elevator, was that green too, or—
Peter: Yes. I love his reaction here.
John: Yeah. And down.
Dean: I like the little pause, though. Like, everything’s okay, and then, Bugs Bunny.
John: It is Bugs Bunny, isn’t it?
All: Woah!
Dean: And that is digital debris, my friends.
Christine: Wow.
John: That is digital debris. So let me get this straight - we dropped digital pieces of cardboard, but we used a giant bar to lift our actor and slam him against the top of an elevator.
Peter: And slam him hard, too.
John: Okay. Good, that’s good, I’m glad we got our priorities straight.
Chris: There was a little smile from Aldis there because it was just so fun. I mean it was like, we couldn’t— and we only had one shot at it. I mean, you really wanted him to be scared, but it was just too impossible when he got pulled to the ceiling.
Peter: And we decided to add this part at the end where they drop.
[All Laugh]
Dean: “You didn’t see that coming, seriously?”
John: We actually, uh, it was a big debate this year, and most people watching the DVD might now know Jeri Ryan, until she shows up, when she would get her ‘seriously?’, because being allowed to say ‘seriously’ is part of the whole ‘you’re part of the team'.

John: Yeah, exactly, exactly.
Peter: Where did Erik Casten come from, the name?
John: Uh, clearances. [Laughter] Seriously man, we accuse people of such horrible, actionable crimes, we absolutely will.
Christine: Well what do we say, K's are evil?
John: K's are evil.
Christine: S's, P's, you know, things like that. And so I, you know—
John: An F or a Ph, that's usually evil.
Christine: I like to work with sounds, when we're naming.
Scott: Oh here he's covering his scar there, too.
John: Yeah.
Scott: If you guys are paying attention, he puts his hat back on.
John: And again, it's, it's—'cause we just did the commentary for The Order 23 Job, and this is another one where it's just, you just take Aldis and Chris, you let them be annoyed with each other, and you set them off on a separate plotline. And that will bring you amusement.
Peter: Yes. Mark Roskin shot this scene also, because my wife was having surgery.
John: Oh I'm sorry, is she okay?
Peter: Yeah, she's fine. God bless you guys though, it's the only time I've actually been able to leave. [All Laugh] 'My wife's having surgery.' 'Sorry, you can't-- have to stay.'
John: Well, Marc Roskin directed, uh, MMA, the MMA job which is on the set of discs and everything; he's actually our Producer/Director up there, who stayed up in Portland. So he picked up a lot of-- he shot a lot of stuff. We're... we shoot in seven days when we should really shoot in, oh, ten. Right?
Christine: Everybody gets to work with Rosky, that's uh, that's the way it goes.
John: That's the tradition. Uh, which hack is he doing right now?
Chris: I think this is when he hacks into the camera.
John: Oh, as he hacks into the remote camera.
Chris: He hacks into the remote camera.
John: That's another thing we—
Dean: Yeah this is when we decided to have that— the camera on his belt buckle allowed them to see what he was doing on the computer.
John: The phone camera.
Dean: The phone camera.
Christine: Right.
John: Also eminently doable. It's a bit cludgy, but you can- you can do it.
Peter: Tim's bombing here, which— we decided to give an arc here-
John: See, this is my question, because Tim's bombing, alright, and that's what I found delightful, is the fact that Nate Ford is finally not good at something.
All: Right.
John: What was the audience thinking? These are Portland extras, they've been told they're seeing Tim Hutton, did he just go up and suck, or did you tell them he was going to suck?
Scott: No, they were—
Peter: We told them that—Uh, we stood up and we showed all the uh, audience reactions, and Tim was up there with me and I was yelling out 'Okay now he really sucks; no, he really, really sucks' [All Laugh] 'No, he's boring', and they would all get really bored.
Chris: Now here were these real tricks that Apollo Robbins taught them to do, we did— we kinda had a little magic bootcamp while this filming was going on. And uh, you know these are all things Apollo brought up there, and we choreographed; they just had a ball.
Peter: It was astounding the show still turned out short with the four pages we added there. [All Laugh] Nothing but magicians.
Chris: But, but it's a testament to the pace of this show, I mean you really- it just flies.
John: It's, uh— and she's having another drink.
Peter: More drink.
Christine: Still in the bar.
John: Seriously, we're so—
Peter: Three days later.
John: We're so bringing drunk science girl back.
Christine: Oh, that's right.
John: I love science— I love a good science girl anyways, so.
Scott: Who doesn't?
John: Who doesn't?
Christine: Drunk science girl is just a bonus.
John: Yup.
Peter: Covered his scar again.
John: Yeah. But it's a tricky bit, because you know, your average television script is between forty five and fifty five pages, and because we're an action driven show we just never know where we're gonna land.
Christine: Yeah.
John: Um, that's cosy. [All Laugh]
Chris: That's a great shot right there.
Christine: No comment.
John: Yeah that's, that's a great shot.
Peter: Once again the bad guys walk by.
John: You know what, if they were- if they were really good at their jobs, they wouldn't be working at a food company.
Chris: Eh, now they're starting to get the hang of their magic act, you see things starting to turn around.
John: Uh, and then, oh yeah, we came up with the whole idea— this was the other thing, is, what were the constraints, what you need for security systems?
Peter: This the most— with the check, the chances of us timing this correctly were so slim, and this was the first take. Wow.
Scott: That was perfect.
Peter: Racked to it. And everybody got up at the right time.
John: Nice. You either get that— you know what, that always is a first take, isn't it? It's like, either you get it or you don't, yeah? Um, yeah that was a big part of designing this episode, is, we had to figure out what were the security systems in place, and how they could possibly interact with magic, none of us being magicians.
Chris: Right.
John: Yeah, it was a lot of, uh, a lot of big lists on the board that day. I like how the thing even has a top to hide her, uh, her pregnancy there. The sword thing is even at the right height.
Peter: The background absolutely loved Tim. They thoroughly enjoyed the—they sat there for, I dunno, eight or nine hours?
Christine: Wow.
Dean: I love that. 'No questions!' [All Laugh]
Chris: Yeah, first thing was- was a fingerprint. Okay—
Dean: 'Belieeeve in the magic.'
Chris: —well lets, how would they get a fingerprint if you're a magician on stage? Well okay, this is how. How would we relay it? And it was all... There's a lot of great gadgets here, we have the [Chuckles], you know the handy, uh, Brother P-Touch... [Laughs]
John: Yeah! The Brother P-Touch fingerprint printer.
Christ: The Brother P-Touch fingerprinter which, uh, available at [sounds like: hamburger shlemer] folks.
John: You know what? Again, this is why people underestimate Hardison. He has to have this stuff in his bag all the time. That's why he has the van. The van is there for a reason, people.
Christine: Respect the van.
Dean: Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this was the first episode that we introduced the gummy frogs—
Chris: Yes.
Dean:—which now became a partner with the orange soda as a necessary thing for Hardison at all times.
John: It is required, it is absolutely required for Hardison to have gummy frogs while hacking.
Dean: And orange soda.
John: And orange soda.
Chris: Alright, now they got the fingerprint, now it's smooth sailing, we get to get in. Uh, not so fast.
John: Uh, well they need to get—it's not so fast because now they need the gel.
Peter: I'll never forget when the prop guy said— we started with gummy bears, gummy this, gummy that, and when you said, I think, gummy frogs, and he's like, "You're fucking killing me".
[All Laugh]
Chris: Nope, gotta be gummy frogs.
Christine: They're exactly the right size! They're perfect.

John: It's gotta be frogs. And again, by the way, I've actually seen the video where Bruce Schneier used this exact technique to fool a $150,000 fingerprint scanner.
Chris: Yeah.
John: The type that the TSA uses to secure airports. 
Christine: So please try this at home.
Chris: This is a great reaction right here.
John: And that's a great reaction. Just the laser, just the mocking him with the lasers.
Chris: And literally, ‘I'm spinning plates here, I'm spinning plates here while you're asking me for retinas.’ He's spinning plates!
Christine: Doing a great job! Spinning plates. And juggling.
Chris: And the retinas part is, to me, what the show is all about, what Leverage is all about, is that we have to put a CEO in a magic box, to bring him to scan his retinas. That is a whole, whole thing.
Dean: That's my favorite part of this whole episode, that for me... when I read that in the draft, I literally fell out of my chair laughing. I thought that was the funniest bit.
Christine: I think that was our favorite bit to do in the room.
John: Yeah, I must have driven the staff crazy, because I must have said 'They put me in a box' a thousand times.
Christine: It was hilarious. And the fake music cues we would make up, wheeling along...
John: Yeah. Oh, remember the uh, the thing I had was the sound of the box [mimics squeaking] and then we cut to the box. [mimics squeaking] 'Hey, is anybody out there?''
Chris: And this was great, this is Apollo—Apollo figured out how we would do the uh, box switch.
John: Cause the box actually works slightly differently, that's not how you'd usually do it, but he—Apollo invented a version of the trick on the fly.
Christine: For us.
John: [mimics squeaking] Hello?
[All Laugh]
Chris: And this stuff, when we shot this, I literally was crying, I was laughing so hard. We were shooting the stuff of him in the box, the CEO-
John: How did you shoot that?
Peter: We attached a camera again, kind of like the box shot earlier, attached the camera to the box and spun it. But I was surprised, it didn't look like I thought it would. It looks great, but it didn't turn out like I thought it would. But he was great, we spun him around and around, at one point he said, 'I'm getting sick'...
[All Laugh]
John: And all the jokes about bosses here, this is what you do in a corporate show, is when you go, you find out like all the stuff, the name of the boss, and the one who's bad at golf, and you work it into the routine, and oh, man. It's filthy, filthy lucre.
Chris: Here's a beautiful shot I love here, too; there's a shot from behind of the box spinning I just love.
John: And, away.
Christine: The color palette’s great, for the entire show. Looks terrific. Really pops.
Peter: [Unintelligible] to our DP by the way, that was four cameras at once; we shot the whole thing in one day.
Christine: Wow. Dave Connell, superstar.
Dean: I love all these shots, I just love them. And he was great in these scenes. I mean, I totally buy him.
John: We just put him in the elevator. ‘Have a good time.’ Yeah like it's all sort of blue and orange down here, it's all sort of grey and pastels upstairs—
Peter: The crowd loved this gag.
John: Oh yeah.
Chris: And here we go.
John: [Mimics squeaking] It's just funny, I'm sorry, man. You put a CEO in a box... And the uh, did you use a real dove, or no, that was a fake dove all along?
Peter: It was fake. It was a little squeezy dove, that's really kinda cool.
John: There's actually a famous, uh, Penn and Teller famous story, they do magic exhibitions, where people demonstrate their tricks. And there's a youth category, where kids show that they have mastery of these classic tricks, there's one where you, like, show the dove in a cooking pan, and then close the pan and then light the fire and whip it away and there's like a cooked dove in its place? And as the kid did it, he screwed it up, so as soon as he lit the fire, like, a hundred magicians stood up at once and went 'THE DOVE!!' 'cause they all know how it works.
Dean: Oh noo.
John: And he's like the thing's on fire and he's beating it out with his tiny like, his twelve year old magician's coat... 'cause doves are expensive. I mean nevermind the cruelty, but yeah.
Christine: Aw... [Pause] These two need to have their own vaudeville act. I would watch a variety show that they hosted. 
John: I like, again, just the constant choices that Beth is making at all times, just like- and she's kind of amused, and now she's bored with this. Ah, she's done, she wants to be breaking into things. Uh, excellent cheesy server room, nicely done.
Peter: It was the smallest room in the known world.
John: Ye—what's that?
Peter: It was the smallest room in the known world. 
John: We like to build our sets really tiny.
Peter: It was basically a closet.
John: Yeah, and then this was again always our drive to the [unintelligible] complication.
Peter: Good bad guy, by the way.
Dean: Yeah, he really delivered.
Chris: This bad guy, he was really terrific, Kevin E. West is his name.
Dean: We actually met him through uh, Patrick Jakoni, who's our mixer, who mixes all the episodes of Leverage.
John: Did he have a—did he just bring the headshot in, or....
Dean: He was a friend and he just said "I really want you to meet this guy, he's a friend of mine, I really think he's a terrific actor." And I met him, and I thought he was great. You guys have met him, and—
Chris: Great kind of middle management evil.
John: The banality of evil. He gets a great evil speech of evil.
Chris: He does. Which is a late edition.
Dean: A little shout-out to Derek, who does all of our graphics on all the computers.
Peter: Unbelievable.
Dean: I mean, he does so much for us—
Peter: This is where he hit his head.
John: Yeah, see, no scar there, and then, uh, nothing but scarves afterwards.

John: I'm trying to remember, there's a, it's not a Jackie Chan fight, it's a Jackie Chan produced movie, it's with three actresses, I think it's called So Beautiful, which has an elevator fight, that actually was the origin of this.
Peter: What I like is the 90 degree shutter in all these fights. It makes it feel, like...
John: It's very crisp.
Peter: Yeah. It makes it feel like, like you're missing a frame or something.
John: So what happened? Chris turned around, right, turned around and just smacked his head against the side of the cabin?
Chris: Well, I mean, we passed it, but there's a moment when he throws a punch, and it sort of—you can kinda see the edge, in the frame, and his head just continued into the edge of the box.
Peter: No, we had the— we didn't have the padded one in there. And he went against the hard one. Split it open huge too.
Chris: Seventeen stitches.
Scott: Wow.
John: Seventeen stitches, and then like a week later, pulled them out himself because he was sick of them.
Peter: I think it was actually right here.
Scott: Really?
Peter: I think it was this one. I think it was the last punch, if I remember correctly.
John: Never do the last punch.
Chris: Oh, might have been there, yeah.
John: Yeah, lotta elbows, lotta—I always loved a good fight—what, what is this? This is madness!

Christine: It's vaudeville!
John: What the hell was that?
Dean: Something like a Marx brothers movie.
John: I know!
Christine: It's delightful.
John: I'm really waiting for Zeppo to show up to that. I think Gina's Zeppo in this episode. And he's still in the box.
Peter: 'Hello? Hello?'
John: And then this, the getaway with the curtain trick.
Chris: Curtain trick, and this again was, you know, Apollo designed, because, you know, we had in the script, they disappeared in a cone curtain, and he, you know...
John: Well it's actually, it was uh, when I was seven, or something of that age, I saw Bill Bixby do that in The Magician, and it always stuck with me.
Christine: The greatest theme song in the world.
Chris: We watched a little bit of The Magician.
John: We watched a little bit of The Magician, and it has the greatest theme song of all time. If you can go YouTube the theme for The Magician, it's fantastic.
Christine: Our writers’ assistant had it queued up. Becky had it queued up and ready whenever we needed to play.
John: Ohhhh.
Chris: Ohh, gut punched into a chair, that's another kind of recurring theme of season two.
John: Well, it was our Rockford homage.
Christine: Ah yes, the gut punch.
John: Yeah, James Garner spent five years getting gut punched.
Chris: I think this is an iconic shot of this show, I do, it's a beautiful shot.
Peter: And this is Apollo's idea, I think, to put the rabbit back in, too.
Chris: Yes, it was, it was.
Christine: Fantastic visual.
Dean: And I love the way that Aldis plays this scene here, because I- the danger felt real. It didn't feel like, oh comedy villains' fake punch, he's really okay. You know when I watched it, I really felt like wow, we're in trouble.
John: Well Aldis is a very good actor. Yeah. This really also became the year where we kind of established the straight run fourth and fifth act.
Chris: Well this is very much a real time episode. I think three of the five acts were pretty much in real time.
Peter: I like that he talks about the uh, magician's union. You're gonna get a letter from them, I'm telling you. 
Chris: And here is the evil speech of evil.
John: Just explaining that if people are stupid enough to eat frozen pot pies without heating them enough, they deserve salmonella.
Dean: That's not a rationale!
John: No!
Chris: That's what happens to people who don't follow instructions. Now I'm giving you instructions.
John: No, he's really selling this, he thinks he's gonna die here, or at least get seriously messed up. And the bad guy, uh, who played the Busey?
Chris: The bad guy was George Castillo.
John: Yeah he was good. He had a good physical menace. And the nice pass, there we go, if you're paying attention. And what I like is that Aldis made a choice there, like, as soon as he saw that—
Peter: Two different locations, by the way.
John: Oh yeah, you're not— that reverse isn’t anywhere near there?
Christine: Oh, nicely done.
Peter: It's like, thirty miles away.
Dean: Nice. Never knew that.
Chris: We coming up to— when we do this flash, about how we got the phone, is a, this right here is an absolutely beautiful shot coming up.
John: I like that he calls him magician too, as if— it's very, like [very dramatically] 'Magiciaan!'
Christine: I'm actually most proud of that line, by the way.
John: Yeah, exactly. It is. It's very Lord of the Rings.
Dean: And a terrific use of the ninja zoom.
John: Yeah, to reestablish that geography we talk about all the time. Um, yeah, and the poker chip, and the turn to the reveal, she’s gonna bump into him, but the thing I was going to say is, Aldis does a moment there where he sees the lift, he knows it’s going to be okay, and his expression changes.
Christine: His whole face relaxes.
Peter: She looks so hot there, too.
John: She does, she looks very good.
Christine: She's rocking the power pony. There's a lot of Parker's power ponytails this year.
John: Parker ponytails?
Christine: The power pony.
John: The power pony, is that what you're calling it?
Christine: That's what it's called.
John: By the way, if you google power pony that's not what you're gonna get.
Christine: Do not Google power pony.
John: [Laughing] Do not Google power pony.

John: And the whole idea of dumping, um, it was actually, the whole idea that phones now, you can just dump massive amounts of information on, was, I think Bruce Sterling had just done a thing about, um, the ubiquity... instead of cloud computing, but using the sort of—why go to cloud computing if your devices have more memory than the NASA moon landing?
Chris: And here, here's where we're—
John: And, ah, she's back!
Peter: 'I was in the box.'

Christine: 'I was in the bar!'
Peter: 'They put me in a box.'
Christine: He was in the box, she was in the bar, and now they're together again.
John: Seriously man, I had a fistful of scotch, and I must have been saying that for a week. 'They put me in a box'. I may drink during the day. And this, by the way, is an iconic shot for the show. That's a big one.
Christine: Aw, look at that. Look at those two.
John: It's tricky, when you find— our wardrobe has to be high style without ever going over the top, and that's what really— it's nice because that's what makes it visually interesting.
Christine: Look at these two together. Oh my god.
John: I know. They're great.
Dean: And this, again, was a real nice setup for where we ultimately go with the uh, the entire season.
John: That's right, because if you're listening to these commentaries in the—and we've split the season, it's— 209 is the last one. So you don't know what happens in the back end. Um. Dinosaurs.
Christine: They fight dinosaurs.
Dean: But this concept that he has replaced alcohol with control...

John: You know, she does a lot of work here when she's talking to—'cause it's interesting, this is a pairing we don't do a lot, and we wound up doing more this year. Um, is the idea that he is a little outside the team, and very hyper competent at what he does. And you can sort of see their relationship over the course of the first couple episodes arc where she feels comfortable confiding in him, in a way that was not there for season one.
Chris: And she's a little estranged from Nate, too.
Christine: I think because of that betrayal, first season, Sophie and Eliot have a special relationship in season two.
John: Yeah.

What do you think of Tri?
Oof, you're going right for it! xD I'll toss this under the cut, as my understanding is that this is kind of a hot button issue. I can't really tag it as Tri positivity or negativity, as I think Tri is a mixed bag, so I guess be ready for both if you read on, but skewed towards negative.
Basically, I think Tri had some interesting ideas, but was executed poorly.
I love the idea of the National Data Processing Bureau and the strained human/digimon relationship. I loooove the concept of the Chosen being stuck between several forces (the general populace and authorities being against them on earth, Yggdrasil wanting to destroy earth and humans, Homeostasis wanting to restore the Digital World at the cost of Meicoomon, the partner digimon, and the Chosen). The Chosen taking a stand against the force that helped choose and guide them? Nice, interesting.
But there are a lot of problems. Even the most basic story telling cohesion is a mess. There is a time when the scene shifts from day to night in an instant (Saikai). There are times when the internal rules suddenly change without explanation (electronics are said to malfunction around distortions in Saikai, but Koushiro talks to Mimi on the phone during a distortion in Ketsui while a reporter broadcasts the fight by a distortion live from a helicopter). And none of this is "it is not cohesive with the bajillion episodes and movies that preceded it" stuff; these are internal issues within Tri itself.
In my opinion, there are enormous pacing issues (extremely slow pace until the last act, with the main villain Yggdrasil info dumping their motive in a few sentences towards the end of Shoshitsu) and issues with the Chosen ignoring leads and problems mounting around them to engage in fluffy stuff like... onsen trips, culture festivals, ghost stories, and drawn out conversations about... well, mostly about avoiding actually saying anything to each other, with the occasional actual conversation.
Oh, and I'm not saying Tri shouldn't have fluff. Fans love that, in general. My position, though, is that you need to allocate enough time to your plot first, and in my opinion, Tri failed to do so.
And obviously, the treatment of the 02 crew is terrible, as was the lack of reaction to apparently "destroying" V-mon and Wormmon in Ketsui. There's really no way to adequately explain why the Chosen failed to react to those issues (or had slight reactions delayed a few days/weeks/months? I'm unclear on the timeline, but Hikari and Takeru should have noticed that Daisuke and Miyako weren't at school right away).
I've heard folks try to defend various... unpopular aspects of Tri by saying things like... I dunno, "you don't understand this type of Japanese story structure," or "the Chosen trust that the 02 kids can take care of themselves," or "you don't get the philosophy behind it." And everyone is entitled to their opinion/interpretation, but, um.
There's a difference between offering information on whatever type of story structure someone thinks Tri has and the potential philosophy behind it and telling folks that they simply lack the knowledge/intelligence/reference point to appreciate a series of animated films. And historically, the Chosen are supportive and quick to help one another, while also believing in each other. The older kids give the 02 crew room to do their thing in 02, but when one of them gets stuck (Hikari is locked in the Digital World city), or when the kids needed real world support (Taichi, Yamato, and Koushiro go camping to cover their absence), they... they help, same day, right away. Same thing for Jyou, who dropped his test to help the kids when they were stuck underwater.
Even with all of that, there were moments that made Tri worth it for me. For example, Yamato and Gabumon talking about their future, and how Gabumon will always be beside him and supporting him, that shit got me dude ;_; There were some powerful emotional highs in Tri, and a lot of moments to enjoy. They were just... connected to a roughshod plot that couldn't support them.
BUT! Do you know what happens when I enjoy aspects of canon, but want to change some things? FANFIC, THAT'S WHAT! So that's a huge bonus for this gal!
I don't have any strong feelings about Tri one way or the other; I think I'm pretty dispassionate about saying, "I liked this, I didn't like that." So I don't mind discussing and exploring it. While it released, admittedly, I was more emotional, but I firmly believe that fandom is a place to have fun. If something about it bothers me, I make adjustments and/or step away as needed.
So, whatever your stance on Tri, please take care of yourself! And thank you for the ask, hopefully I didn't ruffle too many feathers, lol!

I don’t remember if I’ve left an ask about it or not in the last few weeks, but I’m another anon that read Hitchups for the first time really recently! I binged the trilogy, remembered how much I loved the movies as a child, and sought fanfic. I also think that the concept of Toothless and Hiccup leaving is /so compelling/ and you executed something spectacular wonderfully! Thank you!! Now, I stopped reading httyd fanfic not long after Hitchups was finished. I lost my appetite for it, I suppose, though not my appetite for the fandom itself mind you. The introduction of the TV show really… uh… twisted most of the new/available content. And before the RotBTD was a thing that had already… um… flavored the waters so… that raw, wholesome, original first-movie!HTTYD energy that sucked me back to this ‘kids movie’ so many times? That had been lost for me. That’s why a lot of the fics I rec are aged. They’re from a time before the fandom really exploded and introduced so many new people and ideas. Which means my options are dated and there are probably TONS of great fics out there I can’t vouch for!

How Do Bi Parents Come Out to Their Kids?
It’s not always straightforward.

As the author of multiple memoirs, psychotherapist Wendy C. Ortiz, M.F.T., is no stranger to personal disclosures. In her books, she’s told readers about her teenage sexual exploits and her struggles as a 20-something Angeleno, and she’s even provided lengthy descriptions of her dreams. But over the past few years, Ortiz has been navigating a different disclosure wholly unlike the ones that have shaped her literary career: coming out as bisexual to her young daughter.
“We’re still trying to find a way to explain it without opening a can of worms that we are not quite prepared for yet,” Ortiz tells SELF.
Ortiz’s nine-year-old daughter has always been aware that her parents are not straight—being raised in a household with two moms made that evident. But Ortiz’s bisexuality has been a more complicated identity to discuss, one that expands beyond her current relationship and encompasses a broader swath of who she is as a person. Over the past few years, she’s been experimenting with how to be open and honest with her daughter in an age-appropriate, accessible way that offers comfort and clarity rather than just creating more confusion. Though Ortiz and her family have started the conversation, it remains a work in progress.
She’s hardly the only parent to find herself in this situation.
There are a lot of reasons bi parents choose to come out. For many bi parents, sharing their identity can feel essential to providing their children with an open-minded understanding of the world around them. “I’ve always wanted to give my son what I didn’t have growing up,” Ellie W., 25, tells SELF. Her own religious upbringing didn’t include open conversations about sex and identity.
For others, being out about their identity can feel like a way of encouraging honest communication with their children. “I decided relatively early on in my then partner’s pregnancy that I wasn’t going to be secretive about stuff, because I had dealt with a lot of secretive approaches in my own family around all sorts of things. It was bad for me and also bad for the rest of the family,” Jerome C., 44, tells SELF.
And in a political environment that’s increasingly hostile to LGBTQ+ folk, some parents see informing their children about their bisexuality as an important part of preparing their kids for the future. “To be trans and bi is to be pretty visible,” Nola P., 36, tells SELF. “I wanted to make sure that they understood some of the things that might happen, and how it might affect our family directly.”
That sense of community, identity, and visibility is a big part of why some parents might feel driven to open up this discussion with their kids. Being open about your bi identity can help combat bisexual erasure and help kids understand bisexuality not just as an abstract concept but as the identity of someone they’re close to. It can also help create a sense of open dialogue that will serve kids later in life if they wind up identifying as queer.
“Parents might think in the back of their heads, Well, what if my child was bisexual? I would want them to feel like they could come out to me. So I should come out to them and be that role model that they deserve,” Dan Rice, M.Ed., executive director at the sex education organization Answer at Rutgers University, tells SELF.
Indeed, Mike F., 42, was prompted to come out to his teenage daughter after she came out to him first. “I don’t remember the exact conversation, but she made a joke about not being ‘exactly straight,’ and I said, ‘You and me both, baby girl.’ She paused, looked at me, and said, ‘Cool,’” he tells SELF.
Of course, there are a few reasons coming out as bisexual to your kids can be complicated. For one, bi parents who choose to broach this topic with their children run the risk of facing judgment from family members, friends, and community members who consider this disclosure to be TMI. On a popular podcast I listen to, a women’s health expert advised an audience member against coming out to her daughter as bi, saying that it was a discussion best reserved for older kids. The expert’s reasoning? The audience member’s young child wasn’t ready to hear about who her mommy liked to have sex with.
Um. While most of us would agree that frank discussions of adults’ sex lives aren’t an appropriate topic for children, coming out as bisexual to your kids in no way means giving them an extensive overview of everyone you’ve slept with (and how). “Being bi isn’t just about how you have sex and who you have sex with, it’s about how you understand desire and love and connection and community,” Cory Silverberg, an award-winning sex educator and author of Sex Is a Funny Word, tells SELF.
Though some parents might fret about the possibility of burdening their children with too much information at too young an age, Rice doesn’t think parents need to worry about having this conversation too soon. “It’s never too early,” he says. “What we’re explaining to children is love, and who we love and have a special love for. Children understand love.”
Then there’s the fact that starting the conversation can feel complicated and intimidating. A simple way in might be a casual disclosure during a discussion about different styles of relationships, something like, “Some people fall in love with people of a different gender, some people fall in love with people of their own gender, and some people, like me, can fall in love with people of any gender.”
It’s also key to keep in mind that your kid might not react with enthusiasm or even interest. “This could be a conversation that the parent might hope is longer, but maybe the kid isn’t interested, and it’s something to come back to,” says Ortiz, who in addition to navigating this on her own also works with many queer patients as a psychotherapist. Ortiz recommends mainly letting the child lead the discussion: Tie your disclosures to questions they’ve brought up about relationships or love or identity rather than forcing them to listen to a personal monologue that they’re not ready for or couldn’t care less about right now.
In Jerome’s case, he first discussed gender and sexuality with his son when the child was nine. “It was around that time that one of his cousins came out as transgender, so that gave me the opening,” he says. “I tried to make it ‘not a big deal,’ which meant that, in turn, he didn’t seem particularly fazed by anything I was saying or talking about.”
Above all, it’s important to remind your kid that having a bisexual parent doesn’t change things or mean that their life isn’t going to be the same. Even if this information is new to them, it doesn’t change who you are: a parent who loves them very much.
For many, this is bound to be an ongoing discussion, not a single conversation. The conversation you have with your kids about your sexual identity is likely to shift and expand over the years as your children get older and better able to understand more complex topics. Silverberg recommends using pop culture as an entry point to additional conversations. If you’re watching a Disney movie, for instance, you can remind your child that not all princesses marry princes: Some might marry other princesses, some might be happy with either option, and some might decide they’re not interested in marriage at all.
This can be especially useful for younger children. Ellie says her son is too young to understand sexual and romantic attraction, so she describes her own partners as “friends” but encourages him to observe diversity in the world around him. “He seems entirely [unbothered] by the idea that some children can have two mamas or two dadas or two mamas and one dada,” she says. “He found it quite amusing that there are infinite possibilities of how to make up a family.”
In Ortiz’s own home, the conversations about identity started around the time her daughter turned six. It was something, she tells me, that largely happened organically. When her daughter started talking about kids at school having crushes on each other, Ortiz and her partner gently brought up the idea that people can have crushes on someone the same gender as them as well as on people of different genders. Meanwhile, shows like the cartoon Steven Universe showcase queer relationships in a fun and casual way and have given the family an opportunity to talk about the wide variety of relationships humans might arrange ourselves in.
When Ortiz’s daughter stumbled on photos of Ortiz with an old boyfriend, Ortiz didn’t shy away from being honest about who that person was in her life. “In the last year we’ve approached the subject that I was once married to a man,” Ortiz says. “It’s like, ‘Oh, this is Mommy’s identity,’ versus her other mother who identifies as lesbian.”
As the years have passed, it’s become clear that the many conversations they’ve had about identity and relationships have had an impact on Ortiz’s daughter. When she talks about the future, Ortiz says, her daughter leaves the question of her own orientation open. “She will preface by saying, ‘And I might be with a girl or a boy.’” Thanks to her mothers’ openness about their own identities, she’s able to be confident that whomever her future relationships end up being with, she’ll have the support and love of her family. Which is, of course, what truly matters.

1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?
I really loved the character I created for the X reader series, and wanted to flesh her out more in an OC sense. Plus I love the hundred. 
2: What scene did you first put down?
I write chronologically most of the time, so the very opening scene when the door opens on her birthday and she thinks she’s getting executed.
3: What’s your favorite line of narration?
From the published chapters its this one: This girl was a siren and Bellamy was Odysseus, the only one free from her spell. 
I loved bringing some of Bell’s love of mythology into his thought process!
4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?
“You like what you see, Sparky?”
She scoffed, “I’d rather gouge my eyes out with a spoon, Blake.”
5: What part was hardest to write?
So far it was Bellamy’s POV of the panther scene. His mindset was really hard to describe at that point because I didn’t wanna make him out of character at this point in time. It took me a couple days to write. I finally finished it today though and I love it.
6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?
It’s origin and how close it is to me. I haven’t been wanting to post it because I’m still working on the x reader version, but Maria has a special place in my heart and I’ve poured my entire soul into her. She and this story are incredibly close to me.
7: Where did the title come from?
Yay! I was hoping someone would ask this! It comes from a Marianas Trench song “Desperate Measures” it’s one of my favorites and it just fits the story as a whole. Especially:
For a first effort this / feels kinda last-ditch / i guess this just / got kinda drastic 
Plus I feel like the whole “desperate times call for desperate measures” just fits the show as a whole.
8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?
Um... *coughs* 7x13 *coughs*
I am writing this out of spite. But other than that no.
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
I mean I guess this is an alternate version of the original? 
But there were a couple minor things here and there. Maria was originally going to be Kane’s bio daughter instead of his adoptive one. There was a draft where Maria was at the dance Octavia was caught at. I considered giving her and Bellamy a bigger connection on the Ark but that was scrapped. 
10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?
I mean...I’m a slut for Bellamy Blake what can I say?
In all seriousness, I love writing their interactions and I genuinely think that he deserved better and a love story that we actually got to see develop onscreen. Plus I’m a sucker for Bellamy Blake x Privileged!ocs
11: What do you like best about this fic?
I love the concept! When I first came up with Maria it was a new idea. I knew there were nightblood OCs but there wasn’t a Franco one, which made no sense considering how it was created. (now there’s a couple more since I introduced her *sideyes*) but I love how unique my idea was at the time!
12: What do you like least about this fic?
Rewriting it. The first time through was so exhilarating but now it just feels like work.
Plus trying to figure out what I can change and how I can change it. Because around season 2 we’re getting some BIG CHANGES that are gonna ripple.

attempting a bit of looking back and looking forward!
work stuff
wow. last year. what an unanticipated RIDE? good? bad? spectrum? my supervisor spent the first half of the year alternating between working from New Zealand and taking unpaid leave, both to stay with his elderly mother, and was deliberately very hands off during that period. I’ve always worked with very little oversight, but there were regularly decisions to be made that i considered above me. i spent a lot of this time floundering, mostly because he had indicated to me that he was going to resign, but didn’t do so until three months after telling me this, so i was never sure if i should defer to him, whether he cared, whether it was worth it since he would be gone shortly after making a decision, or whether i should wait because i didn’t want to be bound to a decision that may end up hurting the work i would need to do after he was gone. 
it felt like six months of frustration and inaction on my part, and by the time he officially resigned in June i didn’t have time to deal with much of the decisions left pending through all this, because we were due to launch an online course that sucked up the second 6 months of the year lol. I knew it was coming but i had no idea of the timeline. i was brought in about 2 weeks before the course needed to go live, NOT ideal since i was the one responsible for all content on our online learning platform. which we upgraded! and so i had to relearn! and the course content was all modified from the face-to-face version i’m familiar with! All i remember from June/July is downloading all the apps i used at work onto my phone so i could keep adding things to my to-do lists from bed at 1am. i remember not sleeping much and editing online content at 9pm and having the Head of Health email me back to take the rest of the night off LOL. i am the kind who needs to finish a task in one sitting/have only minor loose ends to tie up because if i come back to it the next day i need to go over everything i did yesterday, since the act of sleep performs a full memory wipe on all my mental systems. 
anyways it calmed down after July but it still took up the bulk of my workload for the rest of the year, so the rest of my duties (i.e. everything else that happens in the library because i am the one (1) library staff member D:) were really shafted. I feel really bad about that because i know the library suffered, but i also know there’s nothing i could do about it.
however i was also promoted to my supervisor’s old position so i’m officially Head of the library now!!!! i do feel like i earned it, and to be honest it won’t really change my role at all, my opinion will probably just be asked for more often. as i said, i always had very little oversight, partially because my supervisor trusted me to work independently, and partially because he split his role as an academic, so being head of the library was only 10% of his role. so thankfully there was no learning curve involved in this new role, its just business as usual! which is great because i truly didn’t have time for a learning curve lol! i got a bit of a raise, and i’ll be more involved in decisions that impact the library. i anticipate i will still be left out of the loop at times, purely because myself and the library live on the ground floor, and everyone else works on level 2. so the library falls into the trap of out of sight, out of mind very often, not through any malice, but because its just forgotten. in the last year though, maybe as a result of my supervisor leaving, i feel like the colleagues i’m closer to have put great effort into reaching out to me anytime they know a conversation that will affect the library is being had. this has really made me feel like i’ve got people looking out, so i still expect the library will be forgotten semi-regularly but that’s out of my control, and i will just do what i can with the help of friends!
so, goals: try to give all areas of the library equal attention, um perhaps convince someone to let me hire a second staff member lol??, maybe get a standing invite to one of the committees with executive staff so i can be in the loop on what’s like... happening generally, oh god sort out the ebook situation (currently: non existent and confusing to consider)
me stuff
due to a combination of factors (a few months of nausea, unbearable outdoor conditions, laziness) i didn’t start my usual six months of exercising before i once again switch off all movement for the winter months lol. since no longer having a dog, going on walks/jogs became really un-fun, but in the last few years i’ve found a new routine. i didn’t get back into this routine when i normally would, and my holiday ends this week, but i’m thinking i might loosen my plan this year. i’ve been good at eliminating any sense of guilt attached to ‘fitness’ the last few years, and replacing it with a satisfaction in feeling the capability of my own body. so my plan is, use the structure of a work week to build up my exercise routine, use more work mornings to try and fit in some exercise, go into work a little later when i want to because there are no repercussions on me or the library, and once winter hits try to go back to morning walks/jogs because they’re more bearable at that time of year. just to keep up some kind of activity year-long instead of stopping altogether. 
my success in finishing killjoys last year taught me i should really trust in myself to write something i don’t think i’ll be able to write. i’ve got another idea (less ambitious) that i feel would be best written by someone else, but i’m eager to write it anyway! courageous writing! i was also successful at writing more casually with all the tiny pokemon pieces, and hope to continue writing casually. yesterday i listened to a BBC reading of Neil Gaiman’s short story Chivalry, and it reminded me why i love Gaiman’s short stories so much. i’ve always found short stories fairly unpalatable for my own tastes, because of the dissection involved, the hidden messages that take me back to critical reading in university. and critical reading is a GREAT thing, but when i just want a story? i’ve always found short stories impenetrable. But Gaiman’s short stories are so ‘i had a neat idea, here’s 1500 words, thanks for your time’. LOL like they don’t GO anywhere? there are still often layers that critical reading will pull out but sometimes its just like ‘here’s a concept, enjoy’. and i love that idea of no pressure writing! just here’s an idea! i got nothing else, i just like the idea! so here’s to more of that!
also i remember at the start of the year i said i wanted to be more engaged in the community i have on here, and for the first few months of the year really felt like i was failing. a lot of it was a side effect of all the uncertainty at work bleeding into my general state of being, my own emotional state in other areas, working through being a living person etc lol, but as the year wore on i really felt like i did do that! i’ve met more of you on here, interacted either a) more widely, or b) more deeply with some of you, and i feel like i’ve ‘played’ more, and i’ve loved it. 
oh also my 2019 reading mission was to pull out any books i’d owned for 5-10 years, bought at another point in my life journey, and try as many as i could with the goal to get rid of any that no longer appealed to me. and i culled a healthy number of books! so this year is going to be about reading books i’m most excited to read. we’re following passion this year!

I am... very... very... sorry for not updating this. I've been trying to write for this, got started, halfway through I got bored of the concept, deleted it, and started over. It's still... meh, if I'm being completely honest, but I hope you enjoy

Finally a hearts game!
You were excited, and so was Niragi. It was low ranking so you weren't worried in the least.
There were a couple others playing with you, and you smiled. There was people to sacrifice if needed. "How fun!" You cheered. Niragi laughed, shaking his head. "You're a crazy bitch you know?" You heard someone say. You turned to face them, and smiled. Your smile looked so innocent, so pure. "Hopefully the craziest bitch you've ever met."
"Game: Maze Of Reflection (can I name things? No.)
Rules: Everyone will be partnered up. You will be asked questions that you can only answer truthfully. The questions will all have relate to you and your life. Your partner will get the questions they must ask you through the headsets on the table.  If you do lie, the headsets send a wave of the worst pain you've ever felt in your life. Once you've lied a total of 3 times, the headsets explode. There is no time limit. If your partner dies before you reach the end, you've basically won. You just find your way through the maze.
Clear condition: Make it to the end of the maze without lying to your partner 3 times.
The headsets will tell you who you're partnered up with. Game commences in two minutes.''
You skipped to the table, grabbing a headset. You noticed everyone except Niragi, Chishiya, and Last Boss, hesitating to grab one. "Well, come on now! You'll die of you don't grab one," you said. So cheerful. So excited. And for what? To watch the people in this room die? Maybe.
You put the headset on, and watched the screen load.
Partner: Player 59725
Below the number was a picture of Niragi. "Oh this is going to be so fucking easy!" Niragi exclaimed. You high-fived him. "Promise number two really saved our asses, hm?" You teased, remembering him saying something about keeping so many promises being dumb.
'Game start.'
You grabbed Niragi's hand, dragging him with you. "First question... oh, OK. What did your best friend promise to do if you were 28 and still single?" You asked. "That we'd get married," he answered. You heard his head set chime. "This is gonna be a bit too easy for my liking," you muttered.
"What cartoon characters did you idolize growing up and why?" Niragi asked. You bumped into a mirror and cursed. "Fuck... um... it was.... L Lawliet for his skills in solving things as well as his cleverness, Light Yagami for his twisted sense of justice, and Misa Amane for my fashion inspiration?" You said, trying to remember correctly. Your head set chimed.
This kept going on for a couple minutes, where you would ask each other a question, and the truth was told.  Then the mirrors lit up.
'Players 11037 and 59725 switch. Your new partners are player 25718 and 617834.'
''So I go with Chishiya, and you go with that guy?" You asked. He nodded with a groan. "Well, I was getting rather bored, weren't you?" You asked him. He looked at you confused. "What do you mean?" Niragi asked. "Well, we know all there is to know about each other. There's nothing new or interesting being found out right now," you explained.
Were you really bored of him? No, not of him. You would never be bored of him. You just wanted a fun and interesting game. You would never get bored of him. Niragi hoped you wouldn't. He didn't want to be alone.
"So, did you bore the game master somehow?" Chishiya teased when you got to him. "I guess you could say that. We have nothing to hide from eachother, so it was getting boring for me too," you explained.
"Who in all actuality took your first time?" Chishiya read off the screen. He looked at you, waiting for your answer. "Easy, it was Niragi," you answered. Then you felt a pain in the bottom of of your stomach as your headset beeped. A voice on the headset called you a liar, as the pain worsened, and you  screamed, falling to your knees. It hurt. Tears built up in your eyes as you tried to deal with the pain. "Are you lying?" Chishiya asked. "No, read the question again please? Just so I can figure out why I got it wrong. I know I'm not. I really did give him my first," you said, holding your stomach. It really was the worst pain you'd ever felt. It made you shudder. How did they know what was the worst pain?
"Who in all actuality took your first time?" He asked again. You thought for a minute.
'I gave Niragi my 'first'. The question is asking who took my first.'
You looked away. "It... it was taken... stolen... by... by a bully from school. One of the guys that tortured me," you stated. You had never admitted that out loud. You hadn't even told Niragi. You heard your head set chime, and looked at the mirrors. They were projecting you.
All of them. In the whole maze. You gasped, scooting back until your back was against the mirror behind you. You stared in horror as it replayed the words you had said. The thing you didn't want anyone to know had now been broadcasted to at least 14 people. The screen changed to Niragi.
"(Y/N) they did what?! And you- you didn't tell me?!" He shouted. "S-suguru, 'm sorry don't be mad at me," you squeaked, hiding behind your hands, as if he were in front of you. As if he would hurt you. "We'll be talking about this later," he said. Then the mirrors went back to being mirrors. Tears rolled down your cheeks. From the pain in your stomach and the embarrassment. The fear of the one person who you looked for approval of might leave you.
You stood up, and read Chishiya's question. "Who's the person you hate most?" You asked, wiping the tears away, holding your stomach. "Hm? Hate is such a strong word. I don't hate anyone-" Chishiya started, before holding his left hand. His eyes widened and he cursed, holding onto it. His headset beeped, and called him a liar. You guessed the pain worsened as he let out a groan of pain, followed by a small yelp when he tried to soothe the b pain. You went over to him looking at his hand in concern. "Are you ok?" You asked, grabbing his hand softly, your fingers barely ghosting over the skin. He hissed in pain, grabbing it back. "Fine. I hate my father. And my mother. I hate my parents," he answered. His headset chimed, and you looked a him in shock. You would've never guessed that was his trauma. "What? Little miss perfect grew up with a perfect family, didn't she? Got everything she wanted, the attention of people she loved?" He spat. You flinched. "Oh, look here's your question now. Who and what do you fear the most?" He asked. "My father and Suguru's father. And I fear being alone, getting hurt by people, as well as disappointing those I love and them leaving me," you answered. Your headset chimed, and you looked over at Chishiya. "Am I still little miss perfect with a perfect family?"
You two finally found your way through the maze, question after question. You didn't want to tell him some things, but it was better than dying.
'Last question is for both players. Tell the truth or you will be executed whether or not it was your third time lying.'
'Why is that the worst pain you've felt in your life?'
"Because... I was left handed. My parents might not have cared about me or anything having to do with me, but they sure as hell cared that I wrote with my left hand. They broke it once. Never wrote with it again," Chishiya answered. You grabbed his hand softly once more, and gave him a look of understanding.
"Mine has a few reasons. When... well when my first was stolen, it hurt. A lot. And when my father found out I gave my first to Niragi... he hurt my stomach. And the kids at school... the ones that tortured Niragi and I... they used to hurt me in similar ways to both reasons I said before," you said. Chishiya gave you a look that you couldn't read. Was it sympathy? Pity?
The screen chimed as well as phones a 'game complete message' across them both, and your headsets dropped to the floor. You grabbed his hand, pulling him out.
Outside, Kuina, Last Boss and another guy was out there. "My partner had a lot of secrets I guess," Last Boss muttered, wiping some of the blood from his arm. "Dude no way! He exploded on you?" You asked. He nodded, very annoyed at the fact they had. "Like, number 1, ew. Number 2, however,  that's pretty fucking cool. What did they have to hide they didn't want to tell?" You wondered. "So... about your maze fiasco? Why did it only broadcast yours? And you and Niragi were the only two who got separated," Kuina asked. "I don't know... but if the game master is going to be a dick, I'm going to start hating these games," you said. "Hey... (Y/N), can I talk to you?" Chishiya whispered, pulling on your arm. You nodded, letting him lead you out of earshot of the others.
"I'm... I didn't know about your family situation. I shouldn't have said you were little miss perfect and assumed," he said, looking off to the side. "I accept your apology," you smiled. "I-i didn't apologize," he stammered. "Can I hug you?" You asked. He looked around, before nodding. You pulled him into a hug, leaning down, and whispering in his ear, "I know that was your way of apologizing. Thank you for telling me the truth... I'm glad I know you a bit better."
"Everything you heard, you say nothing about, got it?" Niragi threatened his partner. They nodded, terrified of him. They left, and Niragi immediately looked for you. He saw you sitting in the backseat of the car. He gave you a look, and you lowered your gaze. Kuina glared at him, sitting besides you in the back. He went over, and sat in the driver's seat. He purposely sat far from you. Last Boss got in the back, Chishiya finally getting into the front seat.
Niragi didn't say a word. He didn't respond to you, Chishiya's taunting. Nothing. You tapped his shoulder, and tried talking to him. "(Y/N), I'm driving. We will talk later," he stated. Was he really that mad?
You rushed into the hotel, rushing into your room. You didn't want to talk to him anymore. He was being mean.
You took a shower, changing into your pajamas, and sitting on your bed. You knew that Niragi would barge in at any second. You knew he would. Even if you didn't want to talk to him, he would.
You heard the door creek open, and got ready. Would he yell at you? Call you names? These were things that you had never thought about when thinking about Niragi.
You didn't look up as he sat on the bed besides you. "We're going to talk about it. I know you don't want to, but we have to," Niragi said. You looked up at him. "Are you mad?" You asked, playing with the fabric of your shirt. "Kind of. Why... first, let me ask, when did this happen?" He questioned. "Mmm... last year of high school... about two months before I gave you my first," you responded. "It wasn't really your fi-"
"To me it was. I didn't give him my first Suguru. He stole it. Why the fuck do you think I was so nervous the whole time?"
"Yeah but it wasn't-"
"It was! I-i... it was to me. Think about it, if your car gets stolen, it's still your car, no? You didn't give it to them... Then... if they stole my first... I still... I didn count as my first. You were. I counted you as my first."
You bit your tongue to stop the tears. You didn't want to cry and seem weak. "I... I'm sorry I didn't tell you... I'm sorry you had to find out about it that way..." you whispered. "I know. It just... makes me a bit upset that you're the one who made promise 9 and you broke it. I wish... you had told me back then, so that I could've helped you," he stated. "You did. You helped me back then. Even without knowing," you said, reaching your hand out to touch his. He pulled back. "How!? I-i- You cried when I- is that why? How could I have helped you if I didn't even know about it?" He asked, raising his voice. You grabbed his hand softly. "Because you showed me that... when it's wanted, when it's with you someone you trust, and when it's with someone you love... sex is a positive thing. It's not something I should be scared of. You gave me a positive image of what it should be like," you explained. He looked at you in shock. He didn't think you had actually felt that way back then, and even now. But it made sense about why you made promise 40 after.
You lay next to him, catching your breath, your hands holding onto him. Every inch of your skin was pressed against his, as if he'd disappear the second you would let go. He held you just as tight.
"Sugu... let's make a promise, yeah?"
"What is it?"
"That if by the time we're 28, and still single, we'll marry each other."
"I'd like that."
"Promise 40, we promise that if by the time we're 28 and still single, we'll get married."
It made so much more sense to him now.
"If you say so..." he muttered. You pulled him into bed with you, getting under the covers. "Sleep in here tonight. Please?" You pleaded, having a pillow and a space for him on the other side of the bed. "Alright," was all he said before getting under the sheets with you. You hugged him, burying your face into his neck. "I hope you know all the neck and back pain I have endured from hugging and sleeping with your short ass," you whispered. He decided to let your comment slide. He'd would just let you relax from the game. Tomorrow was another day.
You hoped you didn't have nightmare again.
