some days it's just like yeah if the good omens fandom is gonna do one thing, it's watching aziraphale make choices that he clearly feels he has to make, despite whatever he personally wants or what would personally make him happy, because he wants to protect crowley or earth and humanity or whatever
and immediately making him out to be selfish/manipulative/cruel/abusive/too naive/a bigot/etc, solely bc of the fact that crowley is sad in the aftermath...

@dreamstormdragon @theblueskyphoenix
Hey again, finally did an first ever drawing of James Lunagazer in operating surgical scrubs, I'd imagine that for initial parts of Volume 2, he styles his ponytail in an similar manner to Angie and I'm assuming Tyler as well, as an way of fitting in, and also to keep it well back for during surgery, well before Leslie teaches him how to braid it later on.
As for the scenario here, if you remember what I said in my first fanart post of mine all way back regrading how Angie and James could possibly become friends would be an story for another day, well this would certainly be the most trial by fire way of doing so.
I'd figured it would be interesting to have post-High Tensions and Stormy Skies Angie assist someone other than Derek for an change, and how she could possibly interact with an even less experienced surgeon like James for example.
Now I would have put Tyler here, but given he's not been shown with Surgical Scrubs yet as of the time of this post, I had to settle for Angie instead, and save that for an later event presumably around Volume 3 during chapters 13-15.
For an how James and Angie got in this, perhaps it's when Derek ends up falling ill unexpectedly, and James was the only other surgeon with powers similar to him available, as Julia and Bentley were elsewhere with another operation at the time.
Of course due to their eariler spat over Kira Lunagazer, James and Angie are not on the best terms, but mid-way through an critically injured emergency patient, James suddenly has an panic attack due to the amount of blood, and he seems to mutter something over and over, though Angie wouldn't be able to discern why at this point.
However unlike High-Tensions where she yelled at Derek, and called him incompetent, here she would be concerned for James, and ask him what's wrong, but when he doesn't respond, Angie pulls what Derek did for her in Stormy Skies and snaps James out of his panic state, even taking charge and as an result the patient ends up surviving.
After this, James and Angie have an heart-to-heart, where the pair apologise for getting on the wrong foot, and James then opens up about the fact that when the blood was getting too intense, he saw an memory of his dad passing away and thus panicked thinking he would have an repeat of that event.
He actually never told anyone else of it, not even Bentley Toby, fearing that if it was found out he would never be allowed to operate or even be at Caduceus due to this trauma, especially as he had powers like Derek, and viewed Bentley's visit to St Francis as his saviour as he also got an lot of abuse at St Francis due to those powers, so he kept all this bottled up, hoping to overcome these issues on his own, he only really had Kira and his Grandparents to fall back on in regards to that, until he told Angie.
After hearing him out, Angie reassures James that no one would ever judge him for having an trauma, and that no matter what he will have people to support him and that by talking about it as he was doing for her, he was making steps to slowly getting over the past.
Hearing all this, James just brust into tears, and Angie just held him as he let out all these pent-up emotions, remembering the major lesson she had learnt at Hope Hospital, "Always remember that the person in front of you is an a person, and that they need you to show support, be the patient or the doctor you are assigned to."
Eventually after James let it all out, he and Angie agreed to bury their eariler hatchet, and become friends, forming an alliance of sorts.
James would still struggle an lot with getting over his fear of seeing an person close to death during an operation, but eventually after gaining the courage and seeking help, especially from Derek who related an lot to and could even understand to an degree of what it was like to lose an father to an illness, he would eventually be able to stand on his own and face it head on.
And that's it for story of how Angie and James became friends, pretty much the same way she did with Derek, but the roles are reversed, with James being the one needing to snap out of panic of seeing an patient nearly slip away right before his eyes.
Figured it would be interesting to have an similar event happen, except with Angie having grown from her eariler experience back in Chapter 4 and now using it to help another doctor in their desperate hour of need.
Anyway that pretty much covers this fanart, see you in the next one!

Maintain Employee Safety on the Year's Hottest Day
Employers must understand how to keep their staff safe in the heat. Heat-related ailments are potentially fatal. For example, heat stroke and heart disease can result from overexposure to heat and exacerbate pre-existing health issues. Excessive heat exposure might also have an impact on staff productivity. One to three percent of productivity can be lost due to a single degree of heat exposure. Furthermore, too hot or cold working environments might increase employee turnover.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has launched a new National Emphasis Program (NEP) to address workplace heat-related dangers. Rest, cool water, and cool locations are the preventative techniques outlined in the NEP. Furthermore, OSHA emphasizes early intervention and outreach to educate employers about the risks and how to protect their employees from heat-related diseases. As a result, employers may help keep employees safe during record-breaking heat by following these procedures.
Heat-related diseases and fatalities are becoming increasingly common as temperatures climb. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of occupational fatalities and illnesses caused by heat exposure has more than doubled since the early 1990s. As a result, OSHA has announced a new heat-related workplace inspection program to prevent heat-related diseases.
During warmer portions of the day, employers must also provide shade and ample drinking. Employees should also take frequent pauses to rehydrate. A water cooler in a shady location is a fantastic choice. In addition, check that your air conditioning equipment and fans are operational if your staff work indoors. Finally, always wear the right safety equipment.
Oregon OSHA has also accepted final standards on heat sickness and wildfire smoke. These regulations are set to take effect on June 15, 2022. Federal OSHA is expected to seek advice on federal heat rules from Oregon OSHA. For example, the final rule of the Oregon OSHA mandates companies to provide adequate protection for individuals working in hot settings, indoors or outdoors.
While OSHA has requirements to protect employees from heat-related illnesses and injuries, the regulations do not entirely protect workers. Furthermore, OSHA compels employers to keep track of all injuries and illnesses, even if not all of them require medical care. This includes hydration, treated as first aid and not a recordable injury.
Heat stroke is the most prevalent heat-related sickness and can be deadly if not addressed. A malfunction in the body's temperature-regulating mechanisms causes heat stroke. High body temperature, a lack of sweat, and heated, dry skin are all signs. Heat stroke, if left untreated, can result in unconsciousness, convulsions, and death.
Heat stress is a serious problem in the workplace, and employees must be safeguarded. Fortunately, numerous states have implemented legislation to make workplaces safer for employees. California and Minnesota, for example, have already established heat stress laws, while Washington has passed House Bill 722. Under this new legislation, employers must safeguard their employees from heat stress.
Whether your workplace is hot or cold, it is critical to protect employees from heat-related diseases. The goal is to educate your employees on the symptoms of heat-related ailments. They should be taught and encouraged to take breaks, drink water, and seek shade. If they do have symptoms, they should seek medical assistance right away.
Employers should create a heart disease prevention program, according to OSHA. Unfortunately, over 80% of heat-related diseases occur in businesses that do not take preventive steps. Your program should be suited to your location and the job demands of your staff. It should also be backed by management.
Occupational heat exposure is a huge health risk for millions of Americans and is avoidable. Heat sickness at work might result in death or lifelong disability. Most heat-related diseases develop during the first few days of working in a hot setting. Occupational heat exposure accounted for 50% to 70% of mortality. Regardless of the problem, it is simple to limit the danger of occupational heat disorders and keep employees comfortable.
The surveys are designed to gather data on how companies safeguard their employees from heat-related diseases. They also want to see how successful heat-related preventative measures are. Employers may be asked to show examples of their programs and how they safeguard workers in some queries.

TRACK 4: HIDDEN AWAY
*Knock knock*
You ask if you can enter.
[00:11] “...Come on in.”
You enter Carla’s room.
*Thud*
“What is the matter? Why are you out and about? I believe I told you to rest.”
You frown.
“Haah…Either way, go ahead and sit down on the couch.”
You take a seat.
*Rustle*
You tell him a letter has been delivered.
[00:45] “I see. My bad. I got so caught up in my research, I did not realize. I admit that I made a blunder by not receiving it personally. …So, who is this message from?”
You explain.
“A spoken message, you say? …Then, what did the Familiar tell you?”
You elaborate.
“Hah…Damnit Shin. Is the situation truly that dire he had to send a verbal message? …I understand. I will read the letter later and make my decision.
*Flip*
“Hm…”
You try to urge him to listen to Shin’s message.
[01:44] “Did I not just say that I will make the final decision? No need to worry about Shin’s message. Whether I decide to make haste as he asked me to or not is entirely up to me.”
You seem confused.
“...Hm? What is the matter? Is there something on your mind?”
You tell him that you thought he came here to the Demon World for the sake of the plan.
[02:12] “Hm. I will not deny that it would be easier for me to take action here in the Demon World than during our stay in the human world. However, there are various other reasons why I have decided to come here to Banmaden.”
You ask for those reasonse.
[02:30] “For one, this library. It has an extensive collection of history books and medical writings. The two of us are being plagued by pesky diseases. And in both cases, they will most likely be lethal. Seeing as your heart is a special case, there is a high possibility that you have been contracted with a not yet known disease. Therefore, step one would be to gather information on the illness. That I have been continuing my research day after day. This is top priority right now.”
You frown.
“...What? Do you wish to object?”
You tell Carla that he cannot sit still forever.
[03:31] “Fufu…Your sharp observations can be rather troubling at times. …Well, you are not wrong. While I have Shin execute the plan on behalf of me for the time being, I do realize that I will ultimately have to make a move myself as well. Right now we are at that crucial point in the plan.”
You urge him to prioritize the plan over yourself.
“...I figured you would say that. You have always prioritized my needs. That would never change, no matter the risks involved for yourself. However, I simply cannot bring myself to leave you in your current situation…”
You tell him that you might not have much time left either way, so it’d be better to focus on the plan.
[04:24] “...!! Be careful with what you say. Nobody can decide just how much more time of your life you have left.”
You explain that you feel bad for holding him back.
“Hmph. …Hahaha! When did you become this cheeky? …I am being ‘held back’ by you? Hah! How dare you make such assumptions. All you need to do is be by my side. You can take good care of your health here in Banmaden, taking it easy for now.”
You admit to feeling like a burden.
[05:15] “When did I ever say that you are a nuisance to me? Do you truly believe that I will give up on my ambitions because of you? I will grant my wish, no matter what.”
You chuckle.
“Hm…? Why do you laugh?”
You explain.
“Come again? …Say that one more time.”
You repeat your words.
“In other words…You are asking me to drain you of your blood?”
You nod.
[06:02] “Are you being serious…When you’re telling me to take it with me?”
You nod again.
“Hah! Ridiculous…! Utterly insane! Have you already forgotten about what I told you the other day? You are valuable to me as an individual! It is not your blood I need. But you! Yet, you…!”
You shake your head.
“Kuh…!”
You tell him you probably don’t have much time left either way.
[06:39] “You…Cut this out at once…! Do not talk under the premise that you will pass away! I do not even want to think about sucking the cold blood from your dead body. Do you truly believe that I would go that far for my own survival or to fulfill my ambition…!?
You protest.
“…I beg your pardon?”
You explain.
[07:10] “…!! Right…Everything has been going according to plan so far, with a vast majority of the population advocating for the King of Founders to reign over the Demon World. There is not a single king out there who would not rejoice over his regained authority. I…cannot deny that this would make me happy.”
“But happiness is very much an individual concept. Are you trying to say that my happiness would automatically equal yours as well?
You tell him you are happy as long as he is.
“...Hm. You are trying to say that regardless of the end result, you would always prioritize my own happiness?”
You nod.
[08:18] “...I understand. If you insist…I will pursue my own happiness. I will leave this place tomorrow morning.”
You smile.
“Hah. I have to give you credit for your stubbornness.”
You get up and nearly fall over again.
“Ah…!”
*Rustle*
[08:50] “You fool. Why would you suddenly stand up?”
You say sorry.
“Don’t apologize. You can leave the preparations for my leave to the Familiars. You do not need to do anything yourself.”
You agree.
“For now, just take good care of your body, okay? For you to be as comfortable as possible, is part of what would bring me happiness too. In other words…It leads to your happiness as well, correct?”
You ask him if you can make one request.
[09:34] “A request? Fine. Tell me.”
You explain.
“Hm. You want to prepare breakfast for me tomorrow morning? Very well. It might just be our final banquet after all.”
You tell him you will return to your room now.
“...Wait. I shall escort you back to your room.”
You insist on going alone.
“I see. Try not to push yourself, understand?”
You nod and leave.
*Thud*
[10:27] “Haah…She truly intends to sacrifice everything for my sake. And then she even dares to claim that would bring her happiness…She said that confidently while looking me right in the eyes. Even though it should be plenty painful to keep acting normal while her heart is steadily growing weaker. Good grief…She must be the only person alive who can have such a strong spirit, despite looking so fragile on the outside. …Yes, that is exactly what defines her as a person.
…Well then, time to get everything ready. I must find it by tomorrow morning.”
[11:27] ( ーー I decided to take a trip down memory lane, to the days when I would spend my time here in Banmaden, reading books from dusk till dawn. And then, I went even further back in time, recalling the sea of information Father had dripped into my head from a young age onwards. )
[11:52] “...!! Now that I think about it…Father told me somewhat about a secret book which only the King of Founders can open. If such a book truly exists, it is most likely stashed away…somewhere inside this library.”
Carla walks along the shelves.
“...”
He suddenly comes to a halt.
“...Hm? A barrier has been put up alongside this wall. It only covers a small area, however.”
*Woosh*
“...I’ve found it.”
He grabs the book.
*Thud*
[12:44] “It seems to have a pretty tight lock. …Well, I suppose that was to be expected. Only the King of Founders has permission to open this book after all. ーー In that case, as the King of Founders, I order youーー”
Carla begins to cast a spell.
“...Unravel the hidden truth to me!”
*WOOSH*
“Haah…The answer lies…inside this book!”
*Flip flip*
ーー TO BE CONTINUED ーー

“Prentiss, Morgan, you go to the neighborhood of the victims. Y/L/N, Reid, go downtown and just look around for anything strange,” Hotch stated, “I need you all to look casual while scoping out the area so try to look like normal citizens and don’t flash your badges.”
Derek raised his shades to put them on but Gideon gently grabbed his arm to stop him, “Less official.”
Emily let out a chuckle, “Let’s go, Morgan.”
“You ready, Spence?” you grabbed the keys.
“Yes, lov- ,” he played it off as a cough, “Yes, Y/L/N.”
“That was a close one,” Spencer said as he adjusted his satchel as you walked out of the police department together.
“You’re the one who keeps almost calling me ‘love’ in the conference room in front of the whole team! And on the jet!” you added with a giggle.
“It’s not my fault!” he insisted, “My brain short-circuits whenever I look at your beautiful face.”
“You’re hard to stay mad at,” you playfully rolled your eyes.
You and Spencer had been dating for about 4 months now. You decided to keep it a secret from the team until your six month anniversary. You didn’t need the teasing at the beginning of your relationship when things were still a bit new and awkward. But now, you both had said ‘I love you’ and you were practically living at his apartment when you weren’t away on cases. It was perfect.
-
You and Spencer were walking down the sidewalk downtown, looking for anyone who seemed to fit the profile.
“Hmmm we seem too official,” you smiled, grabbing his hand, “I guess we have to act like a happy couple. You know, just for the case.”
“Yep, just for the case,” Spencer squeezed your hand, leaning down to give you a kiss on the cheek.
“For the case,” he grinned.
You cupped his cheeks and pulled him back in for a much longer kiss on the lips.
“For.” you planted butterfly kisses along his jawline, “The.” another kiss, “Case.”
Spencer opened his mouth to speak but was cut off by the sound of his phone buzzing in his pocket.
“Hotch,” he said before swiping accept and putting it on speaker phone, “Hey Hotch. You’ve got me and Y/L/N.”
“Morgan and Prentiss caught the unsub trying to grab another victim off the street. They fit the profile to a tee. We’re bringing them in for questioning but we’ll take shifts. You and Y/L/N can go back to the hotel and get some rest first.”
“Alright, thanks Hotch,” Spencer hung up the phone.
“Oh I think there’s one more thing we have to do when we get back to the hotel room…for the case,” you winked, pulling him back to the SUV with your hands still interlocked.
-
You were in the bathroom stall of the sixth floor, anxiously bouncing your legs up and down.
The timer on your phone started vibrating, indicating the time was up. You stared at the stick in front of you, waiting to be flipped over.
You flipped it over quickly like ripping off a band-aid. Two lines. The second one was faint but definitely there. You were pregnant. 5 months into a relationship with Spencer.
You rolled the test up in toilet paper before placing it in your purse. You washed your hands and splashed some cold water on your face. You took a deep breath before walking back into the bullpen like you hadn’t just received life-altering news.”
You grabbed a random file from your desk as you passed by and approached Spencer’s desk. He looked up from his paperwork with a soft smile as he saw you coming.
“I need to talk to you…like right now,” you whispered, “About the Johnson case,” you spoke a little louder so no one would question what you two were whispering about.
Spencer began to stand and grab his jacket to follow you but Penelope came charging into the room, grabbing you by the arm and pulling you towards her bat cave.
“Actually, Penelope, I have to ask Spencer some questions about a case. I’ll come find you in a bit.”
Spencer nodded to back you up.
“Trust me, the news I have is wayyy more important,” Penelope continued to tug at you.
“Penelope, I really need to finish this. Just give me the highlights now,” you resisted her pull.
“I found a pregnancy test box in the bathroom and I didn’t find the stick. I’m no profiler but usually people would only keep the test with them if it’s positive,” she confessed, “Someone on this floor is pregnant!”
Your eyes widened and you mentally slapped yourself on the forehead. How could you forget to throw the box away?
You made eye contact with Spencer, shooting him a sheepish grin as if to say ‘surprise?!’
Penelope started to drag you along again but Spencer grabbed a hold of your other arm.
“Actually, Hotch really needs her to get this done, Garcia. I promise she’ll be over as soon as we finish it.”
Penelope and Spencer were engaged in an intense staring battle with you in the middle.
“Ugh, fine! I’ll just have to gossip with Morgan! Now you don’t get to know all my theories,” Penelope huffed.
“I’m sorry, Penelope. I’ll make it up to you at lunch tomorrow.
As she clicked away with her high heels on, Spencer pulled you into a supply closet.
“You’re pregnant?!” he asked.
“Um, yeah I am. I understand if this isn’t what you want though, it’s not really the timing either of us had in mind,” you spoke softly, rubbing your arm.
Spencer pulled you in for a hug, “I’m happy if you’re happy. I’ll support whatever decision you make. I can schedule you an appointment at the clinic and I’ll be right by your side the whole time. But if you do decide to have this child, have no doubt that I will be there every step of the way with you in raising them.”
“I think I’m going to keep it,” you smiled softly.
“We’re having a baby?” Spencer beamed.
“You’re gonna be a dad, Spence.”
The closet door swung open, revealing a confused Anderson.
“I don’t know why this is so emotional for you, Reid. We’re out of paper clips,” you crossed your arms as Spencer wiped his happy tears away.
Anderson grabbed some extra staples and scurried out of the closet.
“Most women tend to find out they’re pregnant from 4 to 7 weeks and we’ve been together for 15,” Spencer stated.
“Even your sperm is smart. They managed to get past my birth control so quickly,” you laughed.
-
You and Spencer decided to wait to tell the team until the end of your first trimester. After that, you couldn’t put it off any longer because you were beginning to show slightly if you wore tight shirts. Also, it was killing Spencer to have to pretend that his child was not inside your tummy all day.
You tried to schedule ultrasounds before or after work but sometimes one of you would have to take the day off in advance for ‘a family thing’ while one of you would mysteriously ‘fall ill’ the day of.
Your doctor had just given you the all clear that the baby was perfectly healthy at the end of the first trimester so you were ready to tell the team.
You wore a tight shirt with a jacket over it for the announcement. You let go of Spencer’s hand right before he entered the bullpen.
“See you on the other side,” you winked before sneaking off to the other entrance of the round table room.
You heard Spencer ask if everyone could join him in the conference room for a special announcement.
“What’s all this about, Kid?” Derek asked.
“I have been dating someone for just over 7 months now and she is amazing, beautiful, smart, kind, and I love her so so much. We found out about two months ago that she is pregnant. We actually just got back from the final ultrasound of the first trimester,” Spencer announced.
The team was speechless for about a minute.
“Congratulations,” Hotch finally spoke for everyone.
“WHO IS IT?” Penelope asked.
“She’s actually right out here. I have a feeling you’ll like her,” Spencer smiled.
You stripped off your jacket so your belly bump was on full display as you entered the room.
“Hi guys,” you waved as Spencer wrapped his arms around you from behind and planted a kiss on the top of your head.
The team erupted into gasps and cheers.
“You…and her???” Derek couldn’t seem to process this new information, “How did a group of profilers miss this?”
“Because my boyfriend is a genius,” you grinned up at him, giving him a quick peck on the cheek.
“No, my girlfriend is way smarter. She scheduled all of the ultrasounds and how to get the time off,” Spencer smiled down at you.
“Okay, we’re both geniuses so the baby will be a genius too,” you concluded.
Spencer bent down to give your belly a kiss as the team ‘aww’ed.

Your Drunk! Kakashi x drunk Reader
Pairing: Kakashi x reader
SUGGESTIVE FLUFFINESS- if thats even-
Warning: a little suggestiveness and a small smooch 8) oh and the reader gets drunk.
Tumblr media
You decide to join in on a celebration of a recent victory at a bar, with a good amount of people. most of them were Sensei’s like Kakashi or just close friends You didn’t know why you came, you didn’t want to decline the invitation. but it wasn’t really your scene
you were relieved that Kakashi came, one of the few people you knew at the party. you and Kakashi knew each other for some time and were close friends with each other.
you were about to get up to walk towards Kakashi but he gets occupied by Gai, “KAKASHI!! I CHALLENGE YOU TO DO SHOTS WITH ME, WHOEVER DRINKS THE MOST WINS!!” Gai says with determination
“Haha, sorry Gai I don’t don’t feel up to drinking that much right now, maybe another time,” Kakashi says in his usual calm demeanor reverting his attention back to his book
“KAKASHI don’t tell me you won’t accept my challenge!! ARE YOU INTIMIDATED THAT I MIGHT DRINK MORE THAN YOU!? HAHa!” Kakashi sighs “Oh yes..I am sooo afraid..” he says in his most monotone voice, eyes still stuck to his book
“Was that sarcASMM? I WILL CHALLENGE YOU AGAIN LATER KAKASHI! BE READY!!!!” Gai spins around and sees you “HAHAHA! Y/N! I challenge you to do SHOTS with me”
“shots?.. .like alcohol?” you say with hesitation
“don’t tell me you’ve never drank before!” Asuma chimes in
At this point, Kakashi has everted attention away from his book to observe the situation
“um no, I don’t think I’ve ever drank before” you say in your normal tone “is that strange or something?”
and then suddenly your on a stool with a line of shots in front of you and a bunch of tipsy people chanting “DRINK DRINK! DRINK DRINKK!!!”
you have never had alcohol before, though if this is the time to have some, it would sure be memorable. ‘why the heck not’ you think, ‘It wouldn’t hurt anything let's do it
you suddenly chug on one of the shot cups “BELGHHH that's DISGUSTING!!” you shout after ingesting the beverage
Everyone keeps chanting to drink so you chug another one to please them your cheeks start to flush a red tint “BlEGhh! ok OK, that's the laft none Im'n Drinkingg!”
the whole bar starts laughing as you look around confused “Whast evryone laughing ambout??” Even Kakashi gets a good chuckle at the situation
you fumble around talking and laughing hysterically, jeez who knew alcohol made you this social.. at this point, Kakashi is basically babysitting you for the whole party, you know preventing you from face planting numerous times.
its been at least an hour at this point, and few people have already left You were growing tired and Kakashi noticed you yawned at least ten times in the last two minutes
“Hey Y/n, You think you're ready to go? You sound tired” Kakashi asked “mmm, okay! as long as your with me..tehee,” you said giggly towards the end
Kakashi takes no notice of the flirty tone of your voice and escorts you out of the bar and you two start walking towards your home...
there's somewhat of an awkward silence walking to your home before you speak
“Kakashi ᶦ ʷᵃⁿᵗ ᵗᵒ ⁻⁻.:” you say, too quiet and slurred for him to understand. He leans in closer to hear what you said, “hm?” he says wanting you to repeat.
“I want to,” you say as you pull his mask down and suddenly kiss him, catching him off guard, the kiss lasts longer than it probably should’ve,
Kakashi finally snapping out of it and pulling away and quickly pulling his mask back up
“kiss you..” you say breathily after you two break apart
he’s utterly shocked to his core, staring at you in disbelief you stare back at him with a half-lidded drunken smile
he finally starts speaking..barely speaking in words stuttering. he finally finds composure and looks back at you with his closed eye smile, blushing like crazy under his mask.
“That's sweet y/n, but your drunk. you're not in the right state of min-“
“Did youu not llikke it?” you cut him off drunkenly, looking at him with sad eyes
He doesn’t know what to say he starts looking off to the side, he looks like he’s deep in thought
“We have to get you home, it's getting late.” he states before you can speak and starts walking away swiftly getting ahead by a fair amount
you follow, trying to catch up. “wait but didnnt say if yoou liked-“
“we’re almost a few blocks away” he quickly cuts you off
he’s walking REALLY fast you have to start jogging to catch up almost face planting you start to mutter “But you-“
“and we’re here.” he cuts you off once again Wow, you're already at your front door? jeez, that was quick...
you were panting and getting dizzy, almost falling in the process of going up the steps to your door. Kakashi behind you holding his hands out ready to catch you if you fell.
when you got up to your front door you look back at Kakashi, already starting to walk away
“waittt” you tug his sleeve stopping him in his tracks he turns around looking at you cautiously
“Can you stay Kakashi? I don’t feel very good” you slurred towards the end looking at him with doe eyes
He walks closer to you putting the back of his hand on your forehead “hm, you are hot” He states
( Hehe, thanks Kakashi (8,I am hot )
he starts contemplating before replying “fine I'll stay, only to make sure your okay”
“Yayy!!” you say happily
He walks in and gets your shower ready for you. he walks to the kitchen and reads his Icha Icha as you shower
15 minutes later
“I'm done!” you yell from your bedroom “Okay! come out and ill make some soup”
And so you did
he was squatting looking for a pot in the bottom shelf before standing up and locking eyes with BOOM
you, y/n in a SHEET a white thin SHEET
“Y/N!” he almost yells “PUT SOME CLOTHES ON!” “Kakashi~ what's wrong?” you say innocently
He starts frantically nudging you back into your bedroom while covering his eyes
he closes the door behind you, turns around, and starts trying to comprehend what he just saw, he is FLUSTERED. blushing from ear to ear...
when he finishes recovering for a minute he knocks asking if you're dressed “Yeah I am!” you say
He opens up the door “NO YOUR NOT!!”
“But you said to put something on, I did~!” you say while your obviously in your BRA and PANTIES sitting on the bed
He has his hand over his mouth staring over his shoulder in shock trying to gain his composure, he is so glad you can’t see him blushing underneath his mask right now.
he takes a breath “I'm going to get you some water okay? put something over yourself please”
you nod in reply
He walks out and closes the door behind him he gets the glass of water, still in his headspace
he opens the door and comes to your bedside placing the water on your nightstand.
he tucks you in very gently,
like this man should be a part-time mother or babysitter…Oh wait, he kinda already is for Naruto and Sasuke
he saw that your eyes were closed and he started to leave before he could walk away he feels his arm being tugged he looked back at you
“Kakashi~ please stay with me,” you say sleepily
“Sorry, I have to go” he replies
he feels himself being pulled towards you
you are really close to him now, you start nibbling and kissing his neck, it felt a little weird for you since he had his mask on
“Y/n, your drunk” he states a bit flustered trying to move your hands away
“No I’m not~~” you say sounding obviously drunk
you start to get frustrated at his mask
“mmph..stupid mask” you mutter starting to take off his mask inching it off his face, your other hand settling on his neck
he could smell the alcohol on your breath now
Right before you could take the mask off his face, he firmly moved you away from him... He looks serious now
“Y/n, If I want to continue to be a respectable man I can’t let you do this, it's hard to control myself when you're so close to me. you don’t know what your doing"
you look up at him a bit intimidated
He softens his tone “I'm going to go now alright? get some sleep”
He tucks you back in and gets up to leave
“I'm sorry Kakashi,” you say quietly before he walks out
He looks back at you before leaving out of the window “It's okay y/n” he gives you his sweet signature smile
you smile back and roll back over to sleep
then he finally takes his leave

You Call It A Mess, We Call It Baking
Corpse Husband x Reader (Female)
Warnings: Swearing
Genre: Tons of fluff
Summary: A friendly argument via Discord leads to a baking session. Said baking session leads to a kitchen looking like it was the victim of a tornado. The lesson here is: don’t leave Corpse and Y/N in the kitchen together.
Requested by Anon, thank you so much for your request, hope I captured what you wanted well and I hope you enjoy reading it.
Corpse’s POV
I’ve been sitting in a Discord call with Y/N for about three years now, keeping her company as she’s editing some footage Sean sent her earlier. In the meantime, I’m reviewing the recently submitted stories by my viewers, reading some lines I find funny or downright terrifying to her.
“When I went in the kitchen to check on the cake, it was already out of the oven, a sticky note next to it on the counter that read: ‘smells nice’. My blood ran cold.“ I read the eerie sentence that is suggesting one of my most frightening scenarios - a stalker getting inside your house. I get chills just imagining what was probably going on in the sender’s head when they saw that.
“Jeez, it’s been so long since I’ve cooked something other than omelet.“ I hear Y/N reply absentmindedly, completely neglecting the fear factor of what’s going on in the story.
“Good job missing the point.” I chuckle, my eyes continuing to scan the email until my brain actually comprehends what she said, “Wait, you mean to tell me you have baked anything ever?! No offense, Y/N, but I was honestly doubting your ability to make an omelet as well. In all the years we’ve been friends I can’t remember you ever not saying ‘I hade takeout’ when I asked you what you had for dinner.”
The scoff that comes through my headphones is the most adorable thing ever. She’s one to easily take a joke and never get offended by anything, but I know how heated she can get with her sarcasm. If I’m being honest, I’m always here for it.
“There are many things you don’t know about me, Corpsy. A girl’s gotta have some aces up her sleeve.“ I can just imagine the narrowing of here eyes and the tilting of her head as she says that. She has a very specific way of expressing her thoughts. When we first met I accidentally made the comparison to one of those children’s books that have pictures, stories and small buttons for audio. That comparison has stuck with me and I look back at it very often. To fully catch her point, you don’t just listen to her. No, no, no. You focus on every change in her face and body. The way she looks away during certain parts of her speech, the way her voice plays with several different tones at once. Her posture while speaking. Just like those books - you don’t just listen to the audio, you look at the pictures and read the text.
“Well you know how much I like playing poker, why don’t you come over and throw those aces down.“ The last thing you should ever give Y/N is a challenge. She won’t only homerun it, but will never let you forget it either. When we met she was a girl with self esteem in the negatives, so seeing her brag about her achievements to me always brings me joy.
The details I’ve listed are pretty in-depth, aren’t they? That’s because I don’t want to let anything slip when it comes to her. This realization hit me early in our friendship and it was only like two years in that I finally connected the dots - this investment in her of mine was not simple nor platonic. Come to think of it, I reckon it never was.
“No way, I’m not changing out of my pajamas just to come to your house.” She laughs, once again making me picture her full body reaction to her statement.
I smirk, knowing I’m about to bring out my main weapon, “Oh come on, I’ve seen you in pajamas countless times. You can just admit you don’t wanna embarrass yourself. Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.”
I can sense her fuming even though she’s like two miles away. “I’ll be there in 15.”
She hangs up before getting the chance to hear me lose control of the laughter I’ve been suppressing.
Man, I love this girl.
Y/N’s POV
“It’s on.“ I say as soon as the door in front of me swings open to reveal the smug smirking face of my bestfriend. The foundation of my tough, unbothered act is shaken up by the outburst of butterflies in my stomach which occurs every time I see him. I can never look at this man and not turn at least a little red in the cheeks.
It’s been long since I self-diagnosed with the malicious ‘falling for someone who would never reciprocate my feelings’ illness. I’ve been living with it for a while. What medication do I take? Dating other guys. One bad relationship after another, scolding myself that every one of them has been a desperate attempt to get him to change his gaze on me from ‘best friend’ to something more. Hell, I don’t even know how to define that ‘something more’. I once even tried to admit my feelings, but I was so vague and so incoherent that I didn’t understand myself, so how was he supposed to grasp my downright sad excuse of a confession.
“No ‘hello’, no nothing?“ He moves aside to let me in. I walk right past him with a sassy flip of my hair to mask the nervousness of being aware that his eyes were on me, “Rude.“ He murmured with an obvious smile in his tone.
He looks as cute as ever, black sweatpants and a black tee, hair messy as though he has just rolled out of bed. I can say with the upmost certainty that he’s the only one who can pull of that hairstyle.
I hide mine as I throw on the apron that’s hanging by his fridge, ready to take over his kitchen and put those aces of mine to use. I can’t help but furrow my brows when I see him enter the kitchen behind me and lean against the counter. That’s when I notice the counter is lined with all the ingredients I’ll need for the cake I had in mind.
“OK, what do we do first?“ he claps his hands together, straightening his posture as he gives me a expectant look.
It takes all my brain cells to prevent me from freezing up completely. I’m not usually like this, mind you, I’m a lot better at keeping what’s going on inside my head camouflaged. I don’t know what’s happening to me, but I don’t have much time to dwell on that. If I do, he’ll pick up on it right away.
“Um, we are not gonna do anything. I will be here baking, and you will remain outside the kitchen until I’m done. If you need something, ask and I’ll bring it to you. I can’t have you sabotaging my project, impostor.” I narrow my eyes at him like he’s the most dangerous of threats. And he is, for my mental sanity.
He fakes a hurt expression, clearly fighting to the best of his ability to hide how much he’s enjoying messing with me. “We’ve known each other for five years, Y/N. Don’t you trust me?”
I lean over the counter to where we’re about two feet apart and whisper, “Not. Even. A. Little. Bit.”
He smiles, “You’re just trying to get away with making this cake by watching a YouTube tutorial. Admit it, you can’t even crack an egg properly.” His eyes are now as narrowed as mine as we stare each other down at a proximity that’s rapidly raising my body temperature and heartbeat. It’s not fair. I’m a mess around him so he automatically has the upper hand.
As expected, I give in, “You better not mess around though.”
After I force him to give me several different oaths, we start. I’m working on the batter, he’s working on the frosting. We decided to decorate it with crimson and dark purple frosting. We’re both really pick about the color shades so he’s currently struggling to get the crimson perfect.
“Let’s make it a layer cake.“ He suggests out of the blue, “Two layers, nothing crazy.“
I think it over for a moment or two before shrugging, “OK, but then you better grab a bowl and help me with the second layer. You know how to make the batter, right?”
He confirms that he does and walks out of my line of sight. I hear him open the fridge as I whisk the eggs I have cracked with the sugar.
“You want something to drink?“ He asks while rummaging through the fridge.
I decline, try to focus on the recipe that I have somehow memorized to the smallest of details. As I’m reciting the it silently to make sure I didn’t skip any steps with the batter, I feel something cold run down my back causing me to scream.
“What the fuck was that?!“ I turn around and glare at him just as the ice cube slips out from under my hoodie and falls to the floor. The fucker’s laughing whole heartedly, not giving a damn that he just gave me a mini heart attack. Mainly cause I thought it was a roach or something, and he know I hate bugs.
“You do realize how boiling red you are, right? You look like a lobster. I thought you needed something to cool you down.“
Instead of being annoyed, I do a full 180 and decide to play his game, “Yeah, I know...” I trail off, reaching my hand back towards the bowl of flour. Grabbing a a handful of the white powder I throw it at him before he can even catch on. Needless, to say, his outfit and hair aren’t so black anymore. “Ah, I knew your hair would look good with snowflakes in it, but you can never be too sure.”
“This means war, Y/N.” His smile is borderline malicious, getting me excited for what’s to come.
Him and I have always had these so called wars, but never like you’d imagine. We are silent, strategic, subtle. Neither of us knows when the other will attack until it’s too late. That’s why instead of going for a counter-attack right away, he heads to complete his mission of making the batter for the second layer.
All is quiet except the noises of the utensils clinking together every now and then. I keep a close watch on him out of the corner of my eye and I notice no sus behavior. That is until I see him take a spoonful of his batter and eat it. I whirl around at the speed of a gust of wind, eyes wide, “Do you want to fuck up your guts.” He ignores me as he takes another spoonful, bringing it close to his mouth. This time, I grab onto his arm causing the contents of the spoon to spill on my hoodie.
I roll my eyes, unbothered by the brown stain that by some miracle missed the apron and fell on my grey hoodie, “Don’t. Eat. The. Batter. Copy?“
“Paste.“ He nods, smirking with pride as he puts the spoon aside.
I sigh and return to my side of the kitchen, focusing on the next task: poring the batter into the circular baking tray which he, for some reason, has two of. He repeats the task soon after me and we put the two trays in the oven. I help him with the frosting, getting the shades close enough to what we had in mind.
After about five minutes of the crusts baking, a wonderful smell spreads throughout the kitchen. At this point, all we have to do is wait for the oven to signal that our cinnamon crust is ready to be taken out, wait for it to cool down and then frost the cake.
“It smells really good.“ He comments, turning his head to look at me.
I’m sitting atop the kitchen counter and Corpse is standing next to me. This is the only time him and I are at approximately the same height. The realization brings a thought to my mind, one that makes me feel like an evil mastermind.
“Hey, remember earlier when you said I couldn’t crack an egg properly?“ He hums affirmatively, “Well...“
The carton of eggs is within arm’s reach. I grab an egg, chip it off the side of the counter and crack it apart above his head, its contents coating his hair. “How’s that for a proper egg crack?” I ask victoriously.
He lets out a surprised sound, something between a gasp and a laugh. Shaking his head to get the yoke to fall down, he says amusedly: “I don’t know...you tell me.”
Too late for me to do anything. There’s milk all over me.
The malicious smile on his face is replicated on mine and now it’s really on. However, as we reach for the items meant to be out weapons, the oven dings.
Frosting the cake goes about as well as you expect: there’s more frosting on us than the cake itself.
“Let’s make amends, please. I’m so not looking forward to taking three showers tonight.“ I say, raising a white napkin and waving it around.
“Fair enough.“ He shrugs and we shake hands.
As I’m about to pull my hand back, he holds onto it, making me look up at him. Our eyes lock and I suddenly regain that same shakiness and vulnerability I always have around him. It never leaves me, I just manage to ignore it. The sound of my panic is muffled by the sound of my heart thumping the loudest it has ever.
Expectedly, he is the bold one who makes the first and final move. The move to end one era of us and start another. His lips touch mine and all fades. It’s just him and I. The friends who were never just friends. The cowards who suck at dealing with emotions. The fearful little kids that are afraid of rejection because we both mean so much to each other, to the point of suffering to prevent the possibility of losing one another.
We embrace who we are, finally admitting that friends is not what we are meant to remain forever.
The kiss might’ve been brief, but the meaning it carries makes it the most valuable moment of my life. One I’ll cherish forever. Something in his eyes tells me he will too. That’s all I need. That’s all we need. No words are necessary.
Suddenly, our bubble bursts as a result of his ringing phone. He lets go of one of my hands and takes his phone from the counter.
“It’s Dave”, he smiles, picking up the call and turning to get me in the camera frame. “Hey Dave, look who’s here with me.“
I wave at the camera and at the baffled face of Dave. “Hi!”
“What, in the name of God, is that mess?“ He raises both his eyebrows as his eyes scan us and the kitchen behind us.
“You call it a mess, we call it baking.“ Corpse and I look at each other and smile, blushing as red as the streak in Dave’s hair.
“Am I missing something here? Did I call at a bad time?“ He asks, still struggling to rationalize what he is seeing.
“Yeah, you actually did. I’ll call you back.“ Corpse dead-ass hangs up on him, putting his phone away before turning to me, “We have more important matters at the moment.“
He kisses me again, this time more confidently. His arms wrap around me and prep me up on the counter, insinuating that this kiss won’t be as short as the last.

Court Hallway
After the trial ended, I did not leave immediately. Rather, I waited in the hallway for Hang Jiahe.
Soon, she walked over, guarded by two bailiffs.
MC: Miss Hang.
Tumblr media
Hang Jiahe: What are you doing here? Are you going to laugh at me?
Hang Jiahe: Are you happy to have beat me?
MC: You’ve misunderstood. I came to tell you something.
Hang Jiahe: What?
MC: Actually… this examination report…
I took out that last examination report again.
MC: Due to time and technical limits, we currently do not have the identification results.
MC: When I showed it in court, I just wanted to add psychological pressure onto you.
Hang Jiahe: …
Hang Jiahe froze for a few seconds, but she then responded quickly.
Hang Jiahe: You tricked me… you tricked me… hahahahahahaha!
She suddenly burst into sharp laughter.
Hang Jiahe: I didn’t lose… I didn’t lose…
Hang Jiahe: I still got my revenge!
MC: …
MC: Miss Hang, can I ask you something?
Tumblr media
Hang Jiahe: What do you want to say?
MC: You said in court that Qi Yu tried to hold Hang Fei back “that night”.
MC: But you still murdered her out of hate for her bystander position, correct?
Hang Jiahe: Yes, I hated her for being a coward, hated her for being too scared to resist Hang Fei, hated her for looking on for so many years without lifting a finger!
Hang Jiahe: She knew during those years what Hang Fei was doing to me, so why didn’t she save me?
MC: …
Hang Jiahe: Then… did you know that Hang Fei had also been abusing Qi Yu during those years?
Hang Jiahe: I did. How could she not have been beaten, with how cowardly she was?
MC: Then do you know why she was beaten?
Hang Jiahe: Why?
MC: …
I took out my phone and opened a video featuring Qi Yu’s abuse. That small woman was lying weakly on the floor, passively enduring the man’s punches and kicks. But she kept mumbling something –
“Don’t hurt Jiahe… and those children… stop it…”
Tumblr media
Hang Jiahe: What…
MC: Miss Hang, did Qi Yu never do anything during all those times you were abused?
MC: Are you sure that every time, she chose to be a bystander, rather than being forced into her position?
MC: Did you know that Qi Yu said those words in each of the videos she was beaten in?
Hang Jiahe: I…
Hang Jiahe froze for a second, but then she immediately reacted.
Hang Jiahe: So what, then? What do you want to say?
Hang Jiahe: That I misunderstood her? That I shouldn’t have killed her? Then does all the pain I suffered for so many years even matter?
Hang Jiahe: You want me to absolve her? To forgive her?
MC: You’ve misunderstood. That’s not what I mean.
MC: I am not you. I have not endured your suffering, so I cannot request for you to forgive anyone.
MC: I haven’t seen what happened during those years, so I cannot judge whether Qi Yu was actively or passively making her decisions.
MC: And I definitely can’t carelessly determine whether she sinned or not.
I stopped for a moment and looked at Hang Jiahe’s gloves.
In her mind, she probably was the Count of Monte Cristo, Edmond Dantès – someone who had been wronged and could only get revenge for herself. She believed herself as intelligent and as lucky as Edmond, that she would ultimately be the winner. But…
MC: But even Edmond would figure out the situation before his revenge and repay his benefactors.
MC: I’m telling you this, only because I hope you’ll understand what sorts of people you sent away.
MC: I hope you understand that there have been people who intended to treat you kindly.
Hang Jiahe: …
MC: Also, Miss Hang, I can guess why you were not willing to ask for help from the police.
MC: In that sort of situation, you may have thought that you couldn’t rely on the outside world to go against them.
MC: But even so, me, Captain Morgan, and many, many people still have to do something.
I flipped further into the examination report.
MC: Even if Hang Fei is gone, the things he’s done will not disappear with him.
MC: This is the report we’ve created. Captain Morgan’s already sent it to upper management and applied for international cooperation.
MC: Miss Hang, we will bring you the justice you deserve for the pain you’ve experienced.
MC: As for the last few people, I promise that they will receive the punishment they deserve.
MC: So, for the rest of your life, please don’t live in hate.
MC: You’ve already stayed in the darkness for long enough. Please try to take a step forward.
MC: Doesn’t it say that in your beloved “The Count of Monte Cristo”?
MC: “He who has felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness.”
MC: Miss Hang, if possible, please try it.
MC: Perhaps the light you’ve always been searching for isn’t too far away.
Hang Jiahe: …
Hang Jiahe: Ha… ha… hahahahaha!
Hang Jiahe broke into sudden, sharp laughter. It sounded like a heartrending sob was woven in it, as it resounded in the empty hallway, melting into the rain.
Amid the grey deluge of rain, specks of light leaked through. Maybe the downpour would finally end this time.
Not long after, Simon’s homicide case opened trial, and Wang Chunchong was deemed the murderer. Xingrui Estates declared that they would be depriving Xu Yin of her position and removing her from the family. Only Tyson received the weakest blow, as the evidence for instigation of murder was insufficient. However, lots of people online were saying that they hoped he would “succumb to the demon of illness as soon as possible”.
Thus, the homicide case of the couple in Yaofu Community came to an end.

NXX Base
After the Hang Jiahe case concluded, the NXX investigation team met up at the base again for discussion.
MC: That’s how the Hang Jiahe case went.
Tumblr media
Marius: Thanks for your hard work!
Artem: Thanks for your hard work. You did excellently.
Luke and Vyn nodded at me.
MC: Thanks, everyone.
MC: Enough about me – how’s everyone else’s investigation?
Artem: I’ve already updated Tyson’s case file. I haven’t found any new clues for now.
Marius: I followed what Wang Chunchong said and investigated that guy named Xiao Ren, but…
Marius: I haven’t found anything for now.
Luke: You also found out about Xiao Ren?
Marius: Huh?
Vyn: What a coincidence. I, too, found out about him.
MC: !!!
Luke: Marius, what information do you have on Xiao Ren right now?
Marius: Mainly what Wang Chunchong told me before.
Marius sighed.
Marius: According to Wang Chunchong, Xiao Ren is linked to Heirson’s raw materials purchases.
Marius: Tyson held Xiao Ren to very high regard, and keeps his occupational information on severe confidential status.
Marius: All in all, this person seems pretty mysterious.
Marius: What about you, Luke? What did you find?
Tumblr media
Luke: The aunties in the group told me that Zhao Fei kept looking for someone called “Xiao Ren”.
Luke: I suspect that Tyson brought up this person in the recording that he sent him.
Marius: That’s possible. Wang Chunchong also heard Tyson bring up Xiao Ren, so there should be some sort of link between them.
Artem: Luke, that’s not all the information that the assistive team provided you, is it?
Luke: Yep, that’s not all.
Luke: First, the workers in Heirson where the abnormalities appeared were mostly on the production front lines, so what they touch the most are the products.
Vyn: They probably mixed in their developed illegal drugs into the products, resulting in infection.
Luke: That’s right.
Luke: Secondly, about Zhao Fei…
Luke ripped out a page from his notebook and placed it on the table.
Artem: These names are…
Luke: When I was questioning these ten people about Zhao Fei, their reactions were a bit abnormal. I suspect that…
Luke: They’re the ones hiding Zhao Fei.
MC: What about you, then, Dr. Richter? You just said that you also found out about Xiao Ren.
Vyn: I spoke with half of the 20 special respondents and noticed that it was the same doctor in charge of their examinations.
Vyn: And that person is named “Xiao Ren”.
Vyn: So I suspect that this person knows many secrets regarding Heirson’s experimental data.
MC: If so, this Xiao Ren person knows about where raw materials come from and can deal with the experimental data…
MC: If we can find him, we might be able to patch up the missing part in our evidence chain against Heirson.
Marius: So this Xiao Ren is going to be our investigative focal point from now on?
Luke: Leave it to me, then. I’m the best when it comes to finding people.
Artem: Then leave Zhao Fei to me. I just happen to have something I want to confirm with him.
Vyn: I have only met with the special patients. I will continue to meet with the remaining bunch.
Vyn: Marius, what are your plans?
Marius: Me? I plan to go see Hang Jiahe.
Marius: She wanted to find reporters in the past to drop major news about Heirson, and she’s now in jail…
Marius: We should find out what this news is.
MC: Oh yeah, I’d forgotten about that!
Marius: So, jiejie, want to come with me to see Hang Jiahe? After all, only the two of us know her the best.
Tumblr media
MC: Uh…
I suddenly had a bad feeling.
Tumblr media
Luke: Marius, do you really need someone to accompany you just to go see someone?
Marius: I’m not going to see a typical person, am I? I’m going to see someone who might give us an important clue.
Marius: It makes sense to be a little more cautious and bring someone else.
Luke: Then just bring your assistant. If anything else, then bring some recording equipment.
Luke: Convenient, and it can record in real time.
MC: …
Right after, Artem spoke.
Tumblr media
Artem: Zhao Fei’s case was ours to begin with, and now that we have clues…
Artem: MC, let’s finish it off, alright?
MC: Lawyer Wing…
Tumblr media
Vyn: I may be overstepping, but…
Vyn stepped in just before Artem could speak again.
Vyn: May I trouble you to go with me next?
Vyn: There’s a special patient that I need your assistance with.
Faced with their “eager” eyes, I was very sure that –
The investigation team seriously needs to recruit a new member!

been thinking about the really weird dynamics of the Honda family
and the ways they parallel with the Souma family.
Tohru's relationship with Grandpa Honda has always been really inscrutable to me. It seems like Kyouko liked him quite a lot, and the feeling was mutual, so their relationship ought to be close, right? But despite relying on Grandpa around the time of Katsuya's funeral, I get the impression that Kyouko and Grandpa aren't very close after that? He takes Tohru in after Kyouko's funeral, but doesn't provide a place for her to stay during the renovations, and they don't seem to keep in touch.
I figured this was for the convenience of the plot. If Tohru was close with her grandpa, then she wouldn't have no family, no one left, after her mom died. If Tohru had somewhere else to go, it wouldn't be so vital that she be allowed to keep living in the Souma house.
I've been thinking about Shiki, though, and about Akito and Shigure as parents within the Souma estate, and I'm wondering now if this wasn't actually a parallel playing out in brilliant Takaya fashion.
Starting with a recap, because a summary of info is always useful to me:
Kyouko grows up in a family that is very much about Keeping Up Appearances and Knowing Your Place. Her dad is verbally and emotionally abusive and isn't above slapping people either. Her mother isn't affectionate and doesn't protect her, probably because she's primarily concerned with protecting herself from the fallout when anything sets off her abusive husband. Kyouko has never had her emotional needs met and she's never been socialized to see others as real people with real feelings. Before even 7th grade she's become part of the gang scene in a cry for help and attention, and because these are the only people she can kind of understand. Her father has told her she's kicked out of the house at least once prior before he finally makes good on it and disinherits her at the end of 9th grade.
Katsuya and his younger sister grow up in a family that is also very much about Traditional Values and Keeping Up Appearances. Grandpa Honda is a teacher, and he puts a big emphasis on Proper Manners (and probably also other things like Good Grades, Fitting In, and Knowing Your Place). He's stern and pressures Katsuya to become a teacher as well. We don't know what Katsuya's mother was like, but I'm assuming she was also not particularly affectionate. It's only after her illness and passing, probably when Katsuya is somewhere around 20, that Grandpa Honda reevaluates his life and what's most important to him.
From a young age, Katsuya flew under the radar by heavily masking--ie, he made a cardboard cutout of what society expected him to be, so Polite, Quiet, Respectable, Studying To Become A Teacher, while underneath it all being filled with apathy, resentment, and loneliness. His moral compass is deeply skewed--see his teasing of people, his attitude of looking down on people, his bragging admittance to using his father's influence to get away with things, his creepy expressions that are identical to those of The Root Of All Evil (ie, Shigure). He has no real interpersonal relationships--family, friend, or romantic. He's a 23 year old TA who is fixated on and marries a 15 year old girl because she's the first person he ever recognized as human--he saw her in the middle of a violent meltdown and it was the first time he was ever really struck by the realization that someone else might feel the same feelings he does.
(Which, in addition to the dubious legality and widely-regarded ickiness, is just downright pathetic. I'm sorry, but it's true. Fruits Basket itself backs me up.)
The first parallel that jumps out at me is between the stories of Kyouko and Katsuya, and Ren and Akira:
Ren is an Outsider. We don't know what her family life was before joining the Souma clan, but based on everything about her I feel it's safe to assume it was also abusive. A large percentage of the Souma family is against the marriage, but Akira is adamant because Ren is the first person he's ever connected with. Similarly, the Honda family (save Grandpa) disapproves of Kyouko and she remains forever an outsider to them.
In Kyouko's case, Katsuya is able to ditch his family and start fresh with Kyouko. Ren, on the other hand, has to live within the toxic Souma family to be with Akira. Both husbands die, leaving a grieving widow and child behind. Kyouko treasures her daughter and finds a new reason to live in Tohru, away from the rest of the Honda family; Ren, already jealous of Akito for getting in the way of her relationship with her husband (and not dealing well with being pulled even further into the Souma family bullshit with all this curse stuff), and trapped within the toxic Souma family with no one on her side, chooses to perpetuate the cycle of abuse.
The thing I've been thinking about most is the parallels between Tohru and the Honda family and Shiki and the Souma family:
As I said before, Tohru's relationship with Grandpa Honda is very strange. It's not just me--Yuki and Kyou make comments to this effect also, I'm pretty sure. But I think I can finally make sense of it now, if I think of it in light of Shiki.
I think there are a couple chapters of FBA out there that I haven't read (the one with Akito, and were there other chapters beyond volume 3?), but Mutsuki implies--and I think we should take this at face value--that Akito and Shigure hope that Shiki will leave the Souma family. They are not kicking their child out. They want this as loving parents, who have done their best to raise their child in a good home in the midst of a very toxic environment. I like to think they will do a good job of explaining this to Shiki, explicitly and clearly. Akito could have walked away from the Souma family, but she chose to stay because she had a hand in perpetuating the toxicity and generational abuse in the Souma family and she is taking responsibility for trying to end the cycle. She has finally stepped up as the head of the family. She could have walked away, but she didn't.
Shiki had no hand in making the Souma family what it is. Shiki is not obligated in any way to put up with that bullshit. Shiki can and should walk away from that toxic environment, go somewhere new, and be happy. He and his parents and all his non-toxic relatives can visit and call each other and still maintain relationships, but in healthier places, as everyone learned to do at the end of Fruits Basket.
This, I believe, is what Grandpa is also doing for Tohru. He's just less explicit and messes it up at first.
I don't know exactly why we don't see more of Grandpa's relationship with Kyouko and Tohru after Katsuya's death. Is it because Tohru, as the narrator, is prioritizing Only Me And My Mom stories? Is it because Kyouko didn't want to be a burden (is that part of where Tohru absorbed it)? Is it because Kyouko couldn't maintain a good relationship with Grandpa with the Honda Family Toxicity in the background?
The Honda family toxicity shows up in full force again when Kyouko dies. Tohru is a riceball that doesn't belong in the Honda family fruits basket. No one, save Grandpa, will take her in.
And then he invites his daughter's family, which he knows is toxic and will abuse Tohru, in to live with the two of them.
I don't know who came up with the idea--if it's Grandpa, that's a bit cold, as he should be caring for Tohru. If it's his daughter ("Dad, you're getting older, you should be living with us so we can take care of you") that does make sense, both as a reasonable social expectation (which dad raised her to adhere to) and as a power move (the Outsider shouldn't be getting so cozy with dad, and dad's inheritance, without supervision). I'm leaning towards the daughter, as I don't think the family combining was intended to get Tohru to leave. I think the remodel, though, was something Grandpa Honda saw as a good opportunity to convince Tohru to leave the Hondas.
I think "I'm having the house remodeled and I'm staying with my daughter, but you weren't invited, I could pull my weight or maybe you could find your own accommodations with a friend?" was intended to give Tohru permission to not feel obligated to the Honda family. I think it was intended to let Tohru find someplace she would actually be happy, a found family living situation where she could flourish. I think Granpda sincerely thought Tohru would move in with Hanajima, instead of into a tent, and realize that she was so much happier and fulfilled there that she never came back to the toxic Honda family and had no regrets.
Grandpa's judgment was a little iffy there but he tried.
I'm realizing that, if everyone moved into Grandpa's house because it was bigger, and it's being remodeled specifically for that purpose...the fact that Tohru is sharing a room with her cousin is very significant. Grandpa was so confident, there is no place for Tohru in that house. Tohru was never supposed to come back after the remodel.
(I don't know that much about houses so it's possible that they just didn't have room; depending on whether that's the uncle or the son, you've got to have 4 or 5 separate bedrooms, which I guess could be a lot. But this is a manga, they aren't strictly constrained to realism, and Takaya makes every damn detail count.)
Tohru isn't supposed to come back after the remodel, but she does. She does, and the family is toxic to her, and Grandpa tells her more overtly that she is not obligated to live here out of familial loyalty. If there's somewhere else Tohru is happier, even if it's a really unconventional living situation, she should feel welcome to choose that instead.
Grandpa's a parallel to Akito here. He's been becoming aware, since his wife died, that his priorities were all wrong. That he raised his children wrong. That Katsuya appeared to have no real emotions and had never connected with anyone outside of Kyouko and their daughter. (Maybe he learned to make work friends?? But I doubt it.) That his daughter is judgmental and cares more about the appearance of being proper than about not being rude.
Don't think poorly of him, Grandpa says. Deep down, they're just evil people. But Grandpa recognizes that he had a hand in creating those evil people. And instead of being like Machi's mom, who goes "well maybe I fucked up" and then throws her out of the family, Grandpa takes responsibility for the family he made. He recognizes that he raised his kids in a way that caused them to be shallow and rude and to think of people as means to an end, and he also recognizes that it would be shitty to reject his kids for turning out exactly as he raised them. He has to live with them (and his choices), he says, but Tohru doesn't.
Looking at it like that, I respect Grandpa Honda more. He seemed a bit wishy-washy before--useful for some plot and character development points, but wishy-washy all the same. But it's a tough decision, and having to prioritize people is always shitty. Grandpa not rejecting his daughter means sacrificing a stable home for Tohru. Akito staying as the head of the Souma family so she can ensure the freedom of the former Zodiac means that her child will be subjected to the same generational abuse, no matter how loving and supportive of a home life she and Shigure provide.
But they're both trying to do a right thing in a crappy situation.
And Tohru, like so many of the former Zodiac, does find happiness and fulfillment in the new family she's able to make for herself. She learns to make her world bigger, and she learns that leaving doesn't have to be the same as cutting ties. And so I'm very optimistic that Shiki will find the same.

Fic Rec Bingo!!
So instead of Fic Rec Thursday, I thought I'd do something a little different this week and recommend 25 fics based on this bingo card (although it turned into 26, oops). I kept most of these as CM because that's my blog's focus, but due to the nature of the prompts, there are 5 Marvel (Irondad) ones & 1 Sherlock towards the end!
from @lightveils on twitter, but found posted on tumblr by @cywscross <3
Tumblr media
1. A fic with a premise that shouldn't work but does
I never would've thought I'd enjoy a fic with Spencer as a little rebellious shit because it seems so ooc, but I loved this one!
las vegas kid by trashcanbarbie - 1.9k, 1ch, Gen/Aaron Hotchner & Spencer Reid, Gambling, Spencer Reid Needs a Hug, Young Spencer Reid, Teenage Rebellion, Protective Aaron hotchner, Pre-Canon, Father-Son Relationship, Teenage Spencer Reid
JJ raises her eyebrows, “so, you're trying to say counting cards isn't cheating?” “No,” he grins, boyish and charming, “it is.”
2. A fic you've reread several times
Discipline Changes by fullofcrazyness - 1.2k, 1ch, Aaron Hotchner/Spencer Reid, Implied/Referenced Child Abuse, Hurt/Comfort, Past Child Abuse, Spencer Reid Needs a Hug, Comforting Hotch
Jack stopped and looked at his dad, finally seeing that his dad wasn’t actually angry. Concerned and relieved, but not angry. He was about to say something when he saw someone in the doorway, white as a sheet. “Papa?”
3. A comfort fic
i'm always tired, but never of you by @iamrenstark - 2.2k, 1ch, Derek Morgan/Spencer Reid, Hurt Spencer Reid, Angst with a Happy Ending, Sad Derek, Established Relationship, Hurt/Comfort, Spencer Reid Needs a Hug, Derek Morgan Needs a Hug, Men Crying, Gunshot Wounds, Blood and Injury
When Spencer figured it out, he was stepping out of the elevator on the bottom floor of Quantico, and he went to tell Derek he loved him like he did every day, but he froze up, because he was afraid he wouldn't hear it back. (Or, Spencer thinks his boyfriend is falling out of love with him.)
4. A cathartic fic
Every Little Transgression by @58thacademic - 1.6k, 1ch, Gen, Angst with a Happy Ending, Sad Spencer Reid, Protective David Ross, Protective Derek Morgan, Mentioned Suicide Attempt, Spencer's Backstory, Implied/Referenced Rape/Non-Con, Spencer Reid Needs a Hug, Episode: s03e16 Elephant's Memory
Ok so. Elephants memory was really good because we got Reid backstory. But I'm still annoyed that he didn't defend himself against Hotch. So this was born.
5. A fic you'd print and put on your bookshelf
One Call Away by GhostInTheBAU - 204k, 32ch, Aaron Hotchner/Spencer Reid, Dubious Consent, Attempted Rape/Non-Con, Domestic Violence, Rape Recovery, Referenced Past Drug Use, PTSD, Hurt Spencer Reid, Protective Aaron Hotchner, Mutual Pining, Slow Burn, Angst with a Happy Ending, Fluff, Flashbacks, Healing, Nightmares, Suicidal Thoughts, Hurt/Comfort, Whump, Eventual Smut
When Reid's boyfriend attacks him, leaving him broken and bleeding, he calls the first person he thinks of for help. He calls the only person he really wants to see. He calls Hotch.
6. A fic you associate with a song
I associate this fic with The First Thing You See by Bruno Major. I think if you listen to the song, you'll easily see why <3
You Make Waking Up Worth It by @guccifloralsuits - 2.1k, 1ch, Derek Morgan/Spencer Reid, Fluff, Minor Angst, Established Relationship, Morning Routines, Hurt/Comfort, Good Things Happen Bingo
“Morning sweetheart,” Derek says, pausing briefly to ruffle his hand gently through Spencer’s hair. The genius nuzzles into the touch but doesn’t reply. It’s too early for conversation, Morgan knows. Pretty boy may get up earlier than he does, but it takes the younger a lot longer to really wake up.
7. A fic that inspires you
This fic could have been in so many categories because I adore it, but I wouldn't have started writing Rain is a Chance to be Touched without this fic so it definitely belongs here.
Forgive Me For All I Could Not Become by @degrassi-fanatic - 105k, 20ch, Aaron Hotchner/Spencer Reid, Canon Divergence, Getting Together, Angst, Case Fic, Confessions, Complicated Relationships, Near Death Experiences, Friends With Benefits, Smut, Miscommunication
In which Reid has always been good at hiding things. He hid his father's departure and his mother's illness from social services. He hid his addiction from his team. He hid his sexuality from the world. He hid his inappropriate feelings from his boss. That is until he's bleeding out in Hotch's arms, in an abandoned church, in Oklahoma. From there on out, Hotch and Reid learn to make a complete mess out of each other.
8. A fic that brought you on board a new ship
Even though it's unrequited, this was the first fic that really had me going !!! at Penemily <3
Another Wide-Eyed Girl by mallfacee - 2k, 1ch, Gen/Derek Morgan & Penelope Garcia, Penelope Garcia/Emily Prentiss (Unrequited), Coming Out, Internalised Homophobia, Derek Morgan is a Good Friend, Friendship, Gunshot Wounds, Episode: s03e08 Lucky
Derek Morgan is handsome and calls her “baby girl” and smiles at her like she’s the only girl in the room. Penelope Garcia knows she should be swooning and all she can think is that there must be something wrong with her not to react to a man like that giving her all this attention. Two years later she meets Emily Prentiss and understands.
9. A fic you wish could be a movie
Listen, I adore the soulmate trope, and an angsty moreid soulmate movie? Fucking sign me up right now
i need you now but i don't know you yet by @iamrenstark - 3.1k, 1ch, Derek Morgan/Spencer Reid, Hurt Spencer Reid, Hurt Derek Morgan, Mutual Pining, Soulmates, Hurt/Comfort, Buford Mention, Angst with a Happy Ending, Getting Together, Season 5
It goes like this; Spencer hasn't spoken to his soulmate since he was ten, didn't know their gender or their name or a single thing about them. Spencer's soulmate doesn't want him, and that's okay.
10. A fic that led to you making friends with the author
I'm doing two because fuck you that's why
This was one of the first fics I read of Adam's and I immediately fell in love with his writing! And I'm pretty sure that we ended up becoming friends after I rec'd it!!
Plum Sauce by @goldencatchflies - 1.5k, 1ch, Derek Morgan/Spencer Reid, First Kiss, Friends to Lovers, Getting Together, Canon Divergence, Fluff, Jealousy, Platonic Morcia, Episode: s07e13 Snake Eyes
Garcia tells Spencer about what she thinks happened between her and Derek. He doesn’t seem too happy about it...
I read this from Syd and absolutely loved it, and like with Adam, we became friends from there! (I mean technically husband and wife, but, y'know. Semantics.)
You Belong With Me by @spencerspecifics - 11.4k, 1ch, Derek Morgan/Spencer Reid, Song Fic, Getting Together, Angst with a Happy Ending, Pining, Fluff
A fluffy Moreid fic based on You Belong With Me by: Taylor Swift
11. A fic you associate with a place
This reminds me of a chilled Sunday afternoon on my old sofa in my living room, with the fire on in the background. I read it all in one sitting and loved every word <3
Metanoia by @makaylajadewrites - 39k, 16ch, Derek Morgan/Spencer Reid, Canon Typical Violence, Implied Rape/Non-Con, Implied/Referenced Torture, Established Relationship, Near Death Experiences, Frostbite, Rape Recovery, Suicidal Thoughts, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Autistic Spencer Reid, Drug Use, Eventual Smut, Eventual Happy Ending
Oh, Derek… He couldn’t stand the thought of him bursting in with SWAT in tow, gun at the ready, only to descend those creaky stairs and find his naked, bleeding body, vacated of life, crumbled on a red-stained mattress. The realization that he was going to die at the end of this was catching up to him, but maybe it would be better that way.
In which an unfortunate resemblance to an unsub's victims puts Reid right on his radar.
12. A fic that made you gasp out loud
Gasp out loud might be a *bit* of an overreaction, but this one took me on a rollercoaster and I loved every second of it (all of bau-gremlin's fics will do that to you tbh)
The End by @bau-gremlin - 3.1k, 2ch, Aaron Hotchner/Spencer Reid, Graphic Violence, Stabbing, Blood and Injury, Temporary Character Death, Hurt Spencer Reid, Whump, Hurt/Comfort, Angst with a Happy Ending, Hurt Aaron Hotchner, Sleepy Cuddles, Protective Spencer Reid
The famous interview with Chester Hardwick ... except Hotch and Reid get separated and Reid is left alone with Hardwick and a prison-made shiv.
13. A fic you found at the right time
You're Going to be Okay by fullofcrazyness - 2.6k, 1ch, Gen/Aaron Hotchner & Spencer Reid, Dark, Suicidal Thoughts, Depression, Implied/Referenced Self-Harm, Suicide Attempt, Sad Spencer Reid, Hurt Spencer Reid, Depression, Protective Aaron Hotchner, Hurt/Comfort, Happy Ending
Spencer was no stranger to depression. His father leaving him, his mother’s episodes, being twelve years old in a Las Vegas high school. All of those things made him very familiar with the illness. “I… I think I need some help.”
14. A fic that you would read a fic of
Chain Reaction by EloquentDossier - 42k, 16ch, Aaron Hotchner/Spencer Reid, Alternate Universe, Texting, Dialogue-Only, Text Fic, Self-Esteem Issues, Fluff, Angst, Implied/Referenced Past Drug Use, Canon Divergence, Pining, Oblivious Aaron Hotchner, Happy Ending
A dialogue-only AU in which Hotch texts what he thinks is Rossi's new number but is actually the slightly eccentric stranger whom Hotch knows only as "Spencer." What follows is something neither man could have ever quite expected.
15. A fic that made you laugh out loud
The Bet by @degrassi-fanatic - 1.6k, 2ch, Aaron Hotchner/Spencer Reid, Hijinks & Shenanigans, Bets & Wagers, Humour, Fluff, Canon Divergence
“Fifty bucks says Hotch writes you up and sends you to sexual harassment sensitivity training.” she declares as she stares him down. Without looking away from her, Reid takes out his own wallet and flips it open to pull out a fifty dollar before placing it down right next to Prentiss’s own money. “Fifty bucks says Hotch will go out with me.”
16. A fic that gave you butterflies
The healing and dynamics in this one is just.... off the charts :')
Who Spencer Reid Loves by @blueberriesandbubbles - 36k, 11ch, Derek Morgan/Spencer Reid, Rape/Non-Con Elements, Abusive Relationships, Domestic Violence, Abuse, Hurt Spencer Reid, Mutual Pining, Rape Recovery, Healing, Fluff
Derek Morgan has been in love with the resident genius as long as he's known him. When Spencer enters a relationship with a mystery man, Derek is unhappy. He is even more unhappy when he meets this man. Spencer starts acting different and Derek knows something is wrong and he has a feeling its connected to the man Reid is dating.
17. A fic that embodies something you value in life
The utter and total love and devotion in this fic just punches me right in the gut every time I reread it
A Little Fall of Rain by jack_hunter - 4.3k, 2ch, Aaron Hotchner/Spencer Reid, Hurt/Comfort, Fluff, Angst, Spencer Reid Whump, Autistic Spencer Reid, Major Character Injury, Secret Relationship, Team as Family, Dad Rossi
Morgan crept up behind the doctor and snatched the headphones off of his head, earning a yelp of a protest as he slipped them over his own ears. “Les Mis?” Morgan asked with a quizzical look, “didn’t peg you as the musical type, Pretty Boy.” Spencer snatched the headphones back. “I’ve always loved the theatre and I went to see Les Misérables with-... a friend last Friday.”
18. A favourite AU
The Curious Case of Dr. Reid by severaance - 37k, 10ch, Derek Morgan/Spencer Reid, Transgender Character, Fluff, Trans Spencer Reid, Light Angst, Getting Together, Developing Relationship, Smut, Insecurity, Happy Ending (Warning for Homophobic & Transphobic Slurs)
"And your names for the order, please?" The barista asked, eyes flickering expectantly between the two before her. "Spencer," she answered, although she was not talking to the barista. "I'm Spencer." The man before her had the same idea. "Derek."
19. A fic you stayed up too late to finish reading
I stayed up one night and read pretty much all the marvel fics this author has written, but this was the last one that I simply could not resist. The next day wasn't pretty :/
The more you say, the less I know by forthenightisdarkandfullofterror - 13.9k, 3ch, Gen/Irondad, Angst, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Temporary Amnesia, Protective Pepper Potts, Not Endgame Compliant, Tony Stark Acting as Peter Parker's Parental Figure, Peter Parker Needs a Hug, Blood and Violence, Hurt Peter Parker, Whump
Tony wakes up from snapping with amnesia and for the life of him can't remember the kid hanging around, claiming to be 'just an intern'. Feelings get hurt.
20. A fic that made you feel seen
heavy in my bones by hopeless_hope - 4.4k, 1ch, Gen/Irondad, Chronic Pain, Hurt/Comfort, Hurt Peter Parker, Whump, Father-Son Relationship, Dad Tony, Worried Tony Stark, Angst, Chronic Illness, 5+1 Things
Five times Peter lied to someone about his chronic pain, and one time he told the truth and got the help he needed.
21. A fic you love without knowing the source material
(I mean this is literally all marvel fics but I'll rec this one because I loved it so much)
the locker room by searchingforstars - 15.5k, 3ch, Gen/Irondad, Hurt/Comfort, Angst, Non-Graphic Rape/Non-Con, Hurt Peter Parker, Peter Parker Needs a Hug, Mental Health Issues, Misunderstandings, Arguing, Miscommunication, Crying, Whump, Angst with a Happy Ending, Rape Recovery
Peter's falling apart and he doesn't know how things will ever go back to normal again after Ryder.
22. A fic you've gushed about IRL
Genuinely, this fic is better than most published fiction I've read...
The Third Option by Uncertainty_Principle - 220k, 37ch, Gen/Irondad, Hurt/Comfort, Sexual Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Physical Abuse, Alternate Universe, Hurt Peter Parker, Foster Care, Identity Reveal, Slow Build, Disordered Eating, Homelessness
Ben and May divorced before Peter’s parents died, so when Ben is murdered Peter goes into foster care. It takes just a tiny taste of superpowers for Peter to decide he doesn’t want to put up with his horrible foster father anymore—the streets are infinitely more appealing. All he wants is to be Spider-Man anyway.
So he leaves. Simple.
Simple, that is, until Iron Man needs Spider-Man’s help. Peter isn’t about to turn down an opportunity to fight alongside Tony Freaking Stark, but he also isn’t going to let his hero know that his recruit is a fifteen-year-old homeless dropout. So they strike a deal. Peter will help Tony. In return, the mask stays on. And that’s when things get complicated.
23. A fic you still remember many years later
The Transport Series by ancientreader - 135k, 2 works, Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, Backstory, Canon Drug Use, Childhood Sexual Abuse, Physical Disability, AU, Important Character Death, First Time, Developing Relationship, Angst with a Happy Ending, BDSM, Humour, Fluff
How to become a consulting detective. // Jim's lessons are hard to unlearn.
24. A fic with a line or two that you've memorised by heart
"He has held up buildings and nuclear bombs and whole entire countries on his back. Peter’s body is the heaviest thing he’s ever held."
when my body won't hold me anymore (where will I go) by @madasthesea - 4.4k, 2ch, Gen/Irondad, Temporary Character Death, Angst, Grief/Mourning, Father-Son Relationship, Hurt Peter Parker, Crying, Forehead Kisses, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Medical Inaccuracies, Hugs, Platonic Cuddling
But he knows. He knows. He can feel it. Peter’s dead. Peter Parker watches as Tony carefully arranges his limbs on a cot. “Mr. Stark,” he tries for the dozenth time. No one hears him.
25. Free Space
And to round it off, we have to celebrate the fic that really and truly welcomed me into the CM fanfic world...
Chanel by @4x24 - 24k, 7ch, Derek Morgan/Spencer Reid, Getting Together, Spencer Wears Makeup, Friends to Lovers, Light Angst, Canon Compliant, Canon Typical VIolence, Humour, Fluffy Ending, Pining, Smut Heavy
Penelope mentions offhandedly one night that she thinks Spencer might look good in makeup. Spencer takes the suggestion to heart. Derek likes the new look - and Spencer - more than he probably should. (Season 4)

Make you smile
The joint operation begins in 15 minutes.
Hero gulps nervously. Their hands are sweaty, body jittery. They're pretty new to this whole hero thing, and this is just their second operation, and already the hero organization wants them to work on a joint operation with a vigilante.
Hero doesn't understand, are they evil or not? Should I be scared or no? Their mind starts spiraling. If they're cooperating with the heroes, they can't be that bad right? Hero shakes their head a little, as if to stop thinking. I'm just being silly, I'll know if I meet them.
Hero takes brave steps, making it to the rooftop to get some air first and then they would meet vigilante-
Oh no, they're here too.
It's hard to miss them really- wavy raven curls, a lean but muscular build, and their costume... hero really likes it. Hell, they want to take them to the support people who engineer hero costumes right now and show them all this masterpiece. Hero unconsciously lets out a tiny squeal and immediately puts both hands on their lips, wanting to just disappear into the ground.
Vigilante whisks their head around- eyes sharp, muscles tense, registering someone else's presence on the rooftop. Their body goes lax when they see it’s only the newbie hero.
"Hey, hero."
Hero drops their hands to their side and gives them their brightest smile. They knew that headquarters didn't really want the heroes having much contact with any person on the other side of justice, but this is a joint operation after all, so there's no harm right? Plus they did have to work together, so a good first impression is vital.
Vigilante freezes momentarily. A hero is smiling at me? They almost want to laugh. This is new, all of them generally snarl or sneer. They look into hero’s eyes - it’s such a straightforward gaze, one without any sort of ill intent, that vigilante feels the need to look away.  How long has it been since someone looked at me like that? They can’t remember.
Hero walks over and sits next to vigilante. "Hey", they say in a quiet voice, still not over their embarrassing episode. Vigilante pays no mind to that though, thoughts still reeling with how to deal with this new hero.
"So," vigilante begins awkwardly, "did you need something?"
Hero just blinks at them, trying to register that question in their head. Then it finally hits them. If the heroes before them didn't talk to vigilante, of course vigilante wouldn't have talked to them beyond necessities either. That's not nice. Hero wants to change that.
"No, nothing. I just wanted to talk with you."
Talk? They just want to talk with me?
"So... you don't need anything from me but you just want to talk with me."
Hero tilts their head adorably, as if thinking about that statement. It does unspeakable things to vigilante's chest.
"Yes, is that... I don't know, against the rules or something?" Hero tries to joke, but it comes out a little shaky.
Vigilante smiles, secretly praying that it looks like one, "No, it's not. It's just... different."
Hero didn't need to look at the shape of their lips to know what vigilante was feeling. They could hear it in their voice- a tinge of pain.
Hero doesn't know anything about vigilante yet, but you don't have to know someone's history to make them smile right? Every person deserves to smile, at least that's what hero thinks. So, they're determined to do that, again and again.
"So, is this different, in a good way or a bad way?"
Vigilante thinks about it for a minute.
"In a good way." Their lips curve happily this time and hero secretly takes pleasure in it.
Vigilante definitely looked so much better with a smile on their face.
Hero’s smile matches vigilante’s - happy and satisfied.
-
The alarm goes off. They have to get in position now.
But there's something still bugging vigilante. They swallow a bit of their pride to ask, what's probably the most silliest thing that they've ever wanted to ask someone-
"Hero, wait."
Hero stops in their tracks, a few feet away from the exit door, turning back to look at vigilante.
"Why, um, why did you... smile?"
Hero chuckles heartily and vigilante's cheeks turn redder by the second. The tone is soft and sweet, not condescending, so vigilante doesn't mind at all. In fact, they think that they could even get used to hero’s laughter, and maybe, they’ll end up liking it someday.
Hero’s eyes don't leave vigilante while they think of an answer in their head. The hero organisation must be crazy, because how else can they label this person as evil?
" You don’t really need a reason to smile, you just smile if you feel like it, that’s all. But if you really want to know, smiles are something that reflect one another- that’s the nice thing about them. So I smiled, because you did.” They pause for a second. “ But even if you didn’t, I would have smiled anyways, because I wanted to.”
Hero grins as if to reinstate their point and vigilante smiles back, only then realising that they've been doing it unconsciously. It just felt foreign, but in the best way.
Vigilante looks like they’re trying to understand a math problem and hero thinks it’s the cutest thing. "You're right. That makes sense."
Vigilante holds out their hand and hero looks at them questioningly.
"Come on, this way is faster", they point towards the edge of the rooftop.
Hero feels like their heart is going to fly right out of their mouth if they don't close it, so that's what they do. They keep their lips sealed as vigilante effortlessly scoops them up in their arms and jumps off the rooftop, their powers immediately coming to life. It makes hero wonder just how many times they've done this.
Hero can literally see their superiors in their head, hurtling curses at them for allowing a situation like this to happen. They look at vigilante's face from the corner of their eyes, and it's small, but that's definitely a smile there. Hero smiles wide, a feeling of pride filling up their chest. They know it's funny to feel that way, but feelings are feelings.
As they land safely on the ground, hero thinks,
I'll just leave this part out of my report.
I'm letting the spotlight shine on vigilante for this one, because hurray to morally grey characters who just pretend to be evil and don't actually go around causing chaos xD Hope you all will enjoy this one^^

Baldwins secret - Part 24
You could hear the heavy hit of his shoes against the tile all the way in Australia, his blood sizzling in the Antarctic and the over tick of his brain in Tuvalu.
He had lots of things to say, and he wasnt sure where to start.
Diana almost lept out of the plush brown leather chair she had sunk into as the door burst open "GET OUT" she wailed
"ME?" he seethed "YOU" he pointed "ARE IN MY LIBRARY"
She closed the book with a heavy thud, pushed herself up and levelled her eyes "this house belongs to your daughters, not you"
"First you just up and RUIN everything i mean A FUCKING WITCH AND A VAMPIRE?" He babbled on pacing around the room "GOD and then you fucking birth a child thats the sweetest most delicate toddler ever HOW DARE YOU" concerned ears and a furious Matthew tumbled in one after another
"Baldwin you need to step away from my wife" he hissed, a hard shove pushing him backward
"OH" Baldwin laughed "AND YOU! You killed Philippe AND THEN YOUR SON FUCKED MY DAUGHTER AND TOLD ME ABOUT IT AFTER VENISON!" He practically wailed "ILL NEVER BE ABLE TO LOOK AT DEER THE SAME"
Boudicca bit her lip trying not to laugh, the last time her father had thrown a hissy fit like this was when he uncovered Fabiana did not like Bordeaux. Usually the things he ranted about were not entirely what he was upset over. The girls had all learnt to just let him get over himself.
They all listened bewildered as he ranted on, from how he thought his new tailor was a Russian spy to 15 reasons why Matthew was an idiot.
"AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD" He turned to Augusta "HES GOT A FUCKING MAN BUN! How is he supposed to protect you from an enemy if HIS HAIR IS IN HIS FUCKING FACE?" He looked distant, sick riddling in his face "Oh God was i in the house" he squeaked "did you" he grimmanced "my daughter while i was here?"
Jack couldnt answer, but his silence spoke volumes "i think im having a heart attack" Baldwin slowly lowered himself to a chair, eyes wide and frantic "You had rudies with my daughter in her childhood home that i shared with my dead wife"
"If it makes you feel better ive had sex with Keiko in every room of the house, including your room" Fabiana smiled sweetly "the bed posts make for excellent leverage"
He whimpered "Its all your fault. If you had not of stepped back into Rome none of this would have happened" he squinted his eyes at Diana, unsettling and incensed
"Baldwins right" Baldwin looked to Matthew shocked. Maybe he was not so intollerable after all "If Diana had not of timewalked, you would not have broken your promise to Sienna not to hurt Jack and she would still be here. Because lets be honest brother her leaving is the reason you are angry, is it not?" Matthew challenged
Nope, he was still stupid "Dont be so ridiculous. Her loss" his voice dropped off at the end, solemn
Time for some home truths for the asshole "And lets be completely transparent brother you are angry because you spent the last two millennia hopping from one trophy wife to another and you finally found the one that fit, and yet you ruined it all in seconds" Baldwin didnt like being tested. He also decided he was over his heart attack
"I think im done now" he rose from his seat stalking toward the door
A hand landed on his shoulder "Oh no you dont" Matthew had him against the wall, arm rested over his windpipe "I will not have you ruining Jacks happiness" his lip curled up "You either accept them or-"
"Or what?" Baldwin snarled "You will destroy what?" He pushed him away, angry vein popping in his neck "There is nothing i have left that i have not already destroyed on my own brother so dont waste your time making idle threats"
The door trembled as he flung it open, quiet audience reeling and trying to understand what just happened.
Augusta turned to Fabiana "You've had sex in my bed?" She asked disgusted
Proud smile plastered on her face "Your ensuite is my favourite place. Your detachable shower head is the strongest, makes Keiko gush like a collapsed dam"
"I think im having a heart attack" She quietly whispered, leaning her head on Jacks shoulder
"I think im having a baby" Diana whispered tightly, squeezing her eyes shut
"Oh look!" Fabiana giggled clapping her hands like a giddy child "Diana is gushing like a collapsed Dam"

rescuing a nightmare (from a dream)
Thank you to @khanofallorcs and @linhlotus for betaing! Can also read on AO3 or FFN.
Adrien had let go of Marinette's hand for just a moment when it had happened.. They had been walking down the streets of Paris, having come from the most wonderful brunch at Marinette's parents' house, when Adrien had spotted their old friend, André the Ice Cream Man.
He had let go of Marinette's hand to say hello and maybe get a scoop of ice cream for his Lady when he heard a sickening thump. He whirled around to see Marinette sprawled across the cement.
He heard a yell, as he fell to his knees frantically trying to feel Marinette's pulse. It was strong and steady, but his wife was still unconscious. Belatedly, his throat feeling sore and scratchy, he realized he was the one who had screamed. He slowly propped her head onto his upper arm, desperately trying to remember what he was supposed to do for someone who had fainted. He was about to bark at André to dial 15 when Marinette's face scrunched up.
"Marinette!" Adrien gasped in relief. "Are you okay?"
Marinette put a hand to the bridge of her nose as she blinked rapidly to get used to the bright sunlight. "Adrien? What happened?"
"You fainted! Did something happen? Why didn't you tell me you weren't feeling well?" Adrien demanded to know, his relief quickly turning to anger.
"Shall I call for an ambulance?" André inquired, a worried expression on his face.
Marinette slowly shook her head, "I'm okay, I think. Thank you, André." Adrien wanted to protest; going to the doctor would make him feel much better, but Marinette laid a soothing hand on his arm.
"Why don't you take me home, Kitty? Then you can watch over me as much as you like," she offered. Adrien knew that her words were just a dirty trick to avoid going to the doctor and for once, he didn't want to listen to her. They didn't know what had caused the fainting, even if she seemed perfectly fine now.
But he made the mistake of looking into her clear bluebell eyes that were looking at him so pleadingly.
"Oh, fine," he sighed in defeat. A bright, victorious smile appeared on Marinette's face. Well, he couldn't let that stand.
In one smooth motion, he scooped her up into his arms, making Marinette yelp as she looped her arms around his neck to balance herself. "Let's go home then, Princess," he winked at her. She gave him a cross look, but didn't protest, a pale pink flush covering her face.
Adrien smirked all the way home.
xXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxX
Adrien whistled as he cooked the eggs and set up the coffee maker. Marinette had been exhausted all week and he was still a little worried about her fainting spell from earlier, so he decided he would make use of his limited cooking skills to make her breakfast.
He looked up with a smile when he heard footsteps followed by a loud yawn.
"Good morning, Bugaboo," he greeted her with a kiss on the cheek. She nuzzled against him before stiffening. Adrien pulled back immediately, a knot of anxiety forming in his stomach.
"What's that smell?" Marinette asked hesitantly. Adrien's eyes widened as he hurried back to the stove, worried the omelet had burnt. It was fine, though, albeit a little crispier than usual. He expertly folded it onto the plate and presented it to Marinette with a flourish.
She took one whiff of the omelet and was out the door. Adrien followed her immediately, only taking a moment to whip off his apron. He found her retching into the toilet and hurried forward to hold back her hair.
"Marinette, what's going on?" Adrien's voice was quivering. She, understandably, didn't answer as she coughed. His heart lurched forward as Marinette began to sway in his arms.
"Marinette!" Adrien pulled her back, as she blinked at him for a moment. Then she tried to push him away, "I'm okay now, Adrien. I must have eaten something bad, is all."
Adrien was finding it hard to breathe. "Marinette, we ate the same things, but I'm not throwing up." Marinette tried to stand up again, but Adrien stubbornly held onto her. She called his name, but he wasn't with her anymore.
He had been transported almost fifteen years into the past. He was playing with his mother in the garden, running around and laughing. One of his few happy memories of her.
She had finally caught him and was teaching him about the plants when a sudden bout of coughing had overtaken her. Adrien had run to his mother and cried loudly for his father. Emilie had tried to wipe the tears away as Gabriel approached, looking like he had run to them all the way from his office.
Adrien had gripped tightly onto her hand while Gabriel tried to support her. Instead, she had fallen down yet again, this time her coughs including drops of blood.
Adrien had been frightened, unable to move or comfort his mother. In response to his inaction, Gabriel had shoved him towards the servants and out of the way. After that, he hadn't been permitted to see his mother at all. A scant week later, she had disappeared, seemingly off of the face of the Earth.
He had never seen his mother laughing again. He closed his eyes and this time he hadn't travelled as far back in his memories.
This time, it was Nathalie who was coughing, barely able to stand on her own two feet. The strong, no-nonsense woman who had become a second mother to him had been betrayed by her own body.
When he asked his father if Nathalie was okay, all he ever said was that she was fine. Adrien had learned long ago that being fine was just a pretty lie. He knew now that it had been the effect of the broken Peacock Miraculous which had caused Nathalie's illness, but he still felt that he should have done something to help Nathalie. It could have ended up saving her life, but he had listened to his father's lies and Nathalie had paid the price.
He pulled Marinette closer towards him and buried his face into the crook of her shoulder. She fell silent, feeling the tremors running through his body. "Adrien?" She whispered softly, her breath tickling his ear.
"Marinette, I can't lose you," he cried out desperately.
Within a moment, she was squeezing him just as tightly. "Adrien, you will never lose me." Marinette promised him fiercely.
"You don't know that!" Adrien burst out, finally pulling him away from her. Swallowing past the lump that had formed in his throat, he took in a deep, shuddering breath. Gently, he took Marinette's hands in his own and made her look him in the eyes.
"I've seen this before. Everytime someone close to me gets sick, they say they're fine but they're not."
Marinette opened her mouth to interrupt, but Adrien continued talking over her. "Please, for my peace of mind, my Lady? If you're so sure this is nothing, then why not confirm it with the doctor?"
Marinette was quiet for a moment before she pulled her hands out of Adrien's. For one horrible moment, Adrien felt like his heart would stop beating as he stared at her in terror, completely certain she would deny him this. Tell him he was out of his mind and that she didn't want to be anywhere near him anymore.
Then she lightly placed her hands on his cheeks. "Adrien, you're crying," she said, her voice breaking. He blinked in realization, he hadn't even noticed, though it explained why his vision had suddenly gone blurry.
Marinette wiped the tears away with the tips of her fingertips before enveloping him in another hug. "My Prince, of course I'll do it. I'll go first thing tomorrow, alright?"
Her words had a calming effect on him, giving him the strength to pull them out of the bathroom. "Tomorrow?" He confirmed with her again, anxious tension creeping into his shoulders.
She gave him a look filled with love. "I'd do anything for you, Adrien. Going to the doctor tomorrow doesn't even scratch the surface." She looked down at herself. "Let me change first and let's see if there's something I can stomach right now."
"Sounds perfect," he nodded, but not before he gave her another hug, if only to confirm to himself that she was really still here.
xXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxX
Adrien had been standing outside of his front door for what felt like hours. He'd wanted to skip work so that he could accompany Marinette to the doctor's, but she wouldn't listen to a word he had to say on the matter.
Only now did he understand why she had forced him to leave. He was terrified of the answer. He closed his eyes, trying to gather the courage to step through the door. In the end, it was the thought of leaving his Lady to deal with her pain and suffering on her own which had him barreling through the door.
At once, he was assaulted by the sheer darkness in the room. "Marinette?" He called out, just a hint of fear in his voice. He blinked furiously, trying to have his eyes quickly adjust to the darkness. That was when he heard soft sobs penetrate the silence in the room.
She was sitting on the couch, clutching some papers. Adrien felt like all of his worst fears had come true all at once. Swallowing past his discomfort, he forced himself to remain calm so he could offer Marinette the support she so sorely needed.
Concentrating on putting one foot in front of the other, Adrien reached Marinette's side, flicking on a lamp to alert her to his presence. Marinette lifted her head in surprise, her cries becoming louder as she caught sight of him.
She immediately jumped into his arms and Adrien tried to indicate all of his love and support for Marinette in a simple squeeze.
"Adrien," Marinette said breathlessly, but Adrien shook his head, trying to spare her the pain of speaking the words out loud.
"It's okay, Marinette. I already know." That he had to be strong for her was the only thought running through his head. One which he was chanting like a mantra.
She pulled back, her confusion showing all over her face. "Y-you know? Is this why you pushed me to go check with the doctor?"
Adrien nodded, trying to prevent the tears he felt pricking the corners of his eyes from falling. "H-how long?" He stammered out.
Marinette looked a little hesitant, but she wiped her tears away and took in a deep breath. "Six weeks."
Adrien felt his blood run cold. "Six weeks? No! T-this can't be happening!" He shook his head frantically making Marinette jump back in surprise.
"A-aren't you happy?" Marinette asked him, her eyes filling with tears.
Adrien felt his jaw drop. "How can you say that to me? Why would I ever be happy about this?" He demanded to know.
Marinette was looking at him as if he had somehow betrayed her. "I-I thought–," but Adrien didn't let her finish.
"There has to be some mistake!" He insisted, reaching towards the doctor's report to check for himself. Marinette snatched it away, his fingertips only managing to brush against the cool cover of the report.
"What sort of mistake are you hoping to find?"
"Anything!" Adrien finally snapped. "Damn it, Marinette. You told me I wouldn't lose you, and then you tell me you only have six weeks left to live." He ignored Marinette's squeak of surprise, rubbing his arm across his face to keep himself from bursting into tears. "How could you ever think I'd be happy about that?"
Quick as could be, Marinette pulled him into a fierce hug. "Adrien, that's not it."
Her touch had broken the dam and in moments he was sobbing, clutching at her shirt for support. "What are you talking about?"
"Adrien, Kitty, I'm not in any danger," Marinette promised him, pressing a quick kiss to his forehead.
Adrien simply blinked at her, unable to comprehend what she was saying. She looked away from him and mumbled something incomprehensible.
"What?" He croaked out, needing to know exactly what was going on. He felt Marinette take in a deep breath.
"I-I'm pregnant."
Adrien felt his eyes widen before they filled with tears yet again. "Six weeks?" He checked, her previous words now making sense. Marinette nodded shyly at him, making his heart swell.
"You're pregnant," he laughed breathlessly.
Marinette nodded, throwing her arms around his neck. "We're pregnant, Kitty. We're having a baby!"
Adrien was so relieved and happy, he scooped Marinette up and spun her around. Their combined weight had them falling onto the couch where they burst into a fit of giggles.
"I'm sorry for worrying you," Marinette murmured, pulling his face closer to hers.
"M'lady, you've made me the happiest man alive. It's my own fault for not letting you speak," Adrien whispered back before he closed the gap between them. The kiss they shared was both loving and joyous, full of their relief and future hopes.
He slowly pulled away, only to rest his forehead on hers.
"I guess now we know what we're going to do with the empty room," Adrien grinned. "Pretty fur-tunate we don't have to move, huh?"
Marinette pulled away to laugh. "We'll have a little bug of our own," her eyes were glowing.
"The purr-tiest Bug of them all," Adrien agreed. "Well, after you, of course, Bugaboo."
Marinette looked at him hesitantly. "You really think we can do this?"
"Hey, it's you and me against the world, remember? Together we can do anything."
At his words, Marinette's smile grew wider. "You're right," she said before leaning in to kiss him again. As they sat together, Adrien felt his heart fill once again with gratitude that Marinette had fallen in love with him.
With their kitten on the way, he couldn't wait to begin the rest of his life with her.

A flower’s growth 🌸
I just realized that Hanako is technically a self-insert oc because I use her for more than just twst i-
Also, this is my number one resource https://camp-halfblood-fanon.fandom.com/wiki/Hestia_Cabin
Its mentions one important thing that is critical in Hanako's back story. I'll show you the important thing but I recommend reading it all because its really interesting!
"i.e. Hestia takes some essence of a mortal man she takes a liking to and create her child by fire from the hearth with her essence fused to that mortal's. Hestia then proceeds to notify the father as she cannot raise the child." (13 in 'powers and traits')
Also to give you some visuals (I’ll explain the two boys later on)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So with that being said..let's👏talk👏trauma! More specifically Hanako's trauma.
(The writing style might change so just ignore it-)
WARNING: Suicidal thoughts
Virginal Goddesses like Hestia don't really have kids. Athena children are born from their mother's head. So how would a Hestia child be born? Let me explain.
A man caught Hestia's attention. He was compassionate and energetic and always tried to help when he could. Even though he had very little money, even though he had some hard times, he was still compassionate and that intrigued Hestia.
When he was more financial stable, Hestia decided to gift him a child. A perfect gift for a family man like him. Hestia took some of his essence and mixed it with her’s and with the help of some fire from the hearth, Hanako was born.
A small knock could be heard through the small house. Fumihito goes to open the door only for a baby to staring up at him while making cooing noises. Rapped in a purple blanket with flowers on it, the baby had a small name tag that said ‘Hanako’
“Welcome home Hanako.” The man said with a small smile
When Hanako was about 4, Fumihito married his best friend and moved to America. A few months later triplets were born. All of them being male. First is Kaji, Hinote, and Yakeru. Most people would think Hana would hate to have siblings, but it’s quite the opposite. Hanako was ecstatic to have siblings she could play with.
When she was told she was going to be a big sister and had to take her role seriously, that’s exactly what she did. She read the boys to sleep and keeped them entertained as best as she could. When they were a little older Hana liked to make them wear dress and have tea parties. In return she took part in everything the boys did. Sports, video games, music, art you name it she would try it at least once.
Hana grew in grace and compassion. She truly was a great balance between her parents. It was funny hearing advice that sounds like something a sage would give only for it to be a child talking. She was a bright, energetic girl and never could stay in one place for very long. She was very social and was friends with almost everyone in her school.
But some stories can’t always be fairytales and rainbows...
Hanako’s step-mother fell ill and passed away when she was about 10. Everyone was devastated but life doesn’t stop when people fall. So they didn’t either. Obviously they still mourned but they tried to have a positive outlook even though a family member is gone.
(Fast forward to where Hana is 11)
In the dead of night, when everyone was in a deep slumber, there’s a small crash. At the sound, Hana jerks up in a sweat. Call it intuition, but she had a horrible feeling something was going to go wrong.
She snuck into her brother’s rooms and hid them in a small closet in one of their rooms. As Hana was about to go wake her father she heard a noise. Hana turned around only to see a woman holding what look to be like a sword.
Without warning the woman grabbed Hana’s hair and threw her into a bookshelf. Hana let out a small shriek. The bookshelf itself was unstable and the added force made it fall. Luckily Hana was fast enough to move most of her body. Let’s just say her left leg wasn’t as lucky as her other limbs.
The woman had a feeling the father could come out any minute so she ran around the corner and waited for the perfect opportunity to strike
At the sudden noises that we’re going outside his room, Hana’s father slams the door open only to see Hana stuck under the unstable bookshelf.
In at state of panics he rushed over to her. “Hana are you alright?!?!” But Hana didn’t answer. She was to focused on the woman who was still behind the corner.
“I’m calling the police! Just hang on!” Fumihito yelled. After Fumihito called 911 he tried to move the bookshelf. While he was doing so the woman kept stalking closer. “DADDY LOOK OUT-“ but it was to late. In one swipe Fumihito’s head was cut clean off, his body falling limp right beside Hanako. No one in that neighborhood could ever forget the Bloodcurdling scream that came from Hanako’s house. Eyes wide with horror and despair Hana couldn’t keep her tears in.
Before the woman could do any more damage they heard police sirens. “We will meet again someday demigod.” And with that the woman disappeared.
After a full check of the house they concluded that only the children were left. Once they found Hana, nothing was left of the lively girl. After helping her get out from under the bookshelf the police immediately sent her to the hospital. The police told the triplets to pack stuff that was most important to them and follow the police. (The triplets also packed stuff for Hana as well. One of the things being a photo album of the family.)
The police concluded that the children didn’t have any other adults to care for them so they would have to be put in an orphanage. However there wasn’t an orphanage where they lived so they would have to be put in a new town.
It was hard adjusting to this new life. There was barely enough food for everyone, you had to share rooms with other kids. Hanako had to use crutches for a while until her leg healed. Her new school wasn’t that great either. Hana, not being as social as she once was, was bullied for being too quiet. Not to mention, no one had ever seen a kid with natural yellow eyes and violet hair.
From beating her almost to death, to threatening to cut her hair and gouge her eyes out because she was ‘too pretty’
On terms of Hana in general, she wasn’t acting like her normal self. She had gotten more reserved and became a cry baby. You could easily tell she had eye bags and her anxiety was always threatening to go through the roof. You can only assume those eye bags were because of nightmares from that night. She talked much quieter and always wore a frown with her eye brows scrunched in a worried way.
The other three were to young to understand what happened. The police had to lie to them saying “your dad is on a special trip right now.”
About 6 months later the triplets were adopted by a man who looked like he was the head of some company. Hana tried her best to run after them but the staff had to hold her back. All the while the three were screaming for her to come and save them.
What no one knew is that the triplets would be forced to become assassins. It’s not like they wanted to! The man said if they didn’t he would kill their sister! The night after the adoption they all made a promise to keep Hana safe no matter what.
So there Hana sat all alone on the swings of a play ground, with no one around to comfort her. Surrounded by people who have families and are happy. It’s like the universe was taunting her.
The only thing that didn’t change is her older sibling nature. Giving her food to the little ones. Playing dress up or soccer. Her smiles were always fake. Maybe to the blind eye she seems happy but some could easily tell she was anything but happy.
6 months later Hana finally gets her cast takin off. At this time Hanako is 12 and is at her breaking point. After another day of school, and another day of almost getting beat to death, something snaps inside of her.
(TRIGGER WARNING⚠️)
You have to understand, Hanako didn’t have anybody to talk to. Everyone was either to busy or didn’t bother to care. Which left her all by herself. It felt like she was trapped almost. No one there to listen or laugh with.
The scissors on her dresser looked quite tempting. The relief of not having to go through any more of this pain and loneliness was very appealing, but before she could touch them a huge gust of wind blew into her room. Taking the scissors away from her while she was distracted.
If that couldn’t work then running away would be the next best option. That night Hana packed her things (including the photo album) and drew out her plan. It was quite simple really.
She would skip school and go behind it, where a cliff is, to get a good view of where she could go from there.
After running around the school and into a forest, Hana reached a stream. Cupping some water to drink, Hana got caught up in how refreshing the water was. A snap of a branch snapped her out of her state and made her look around. That’s when she saw the manticore out of the corner of her eye.
Hana quickly got up and started backing away only to forget that there’s a cliff and slips. Plummeting to her presumed death tears start to seep out once again. Out of no where a boy that looks to be about 15, swoops in to save her, but the weirdest thing is that his shoes have wings on them, But she was to tired to care. So acting like she didn’t have a care in the world, she rapped her arms around him and snuggled into his neck.
The last thing she could make out was something like “ Let’s get out of here before that manticore decides it wants a 3 course Demi-god meal!” Or something like that.
When Hana woke up, she looked around and realized she was in an infirmary room. The same boy she saw was sleeping on the bed next to her. A knock on the door was heard, and in came girl who looked about the same age as the boy. “You two have been out for a while.” She said “I would’ve never suspected that a tiny demigod like you could cause so much trouble.” Hana looked confused “Do I know you? And what do you mean by demigod?” She asked.
The older girl let out a small chuckle before walking up an sitting next to Hana. “I’m Jane, daughter of Aphrodite! The reason why I called you a demigod is because, well... you’re half god half mortal.” The younger girl couldn’t believe her ears. “B-but how do we know I’m a demigod?” “Have you seen your other parent before? Can you never be in one place for to long? Those are all signs my dear, of course if you don’t believe me we can wait till your godly parent claims you as their kid.”
After that small encounter Jane took Hanako on a tour of where she’d be staying the whole summer. “W-why are we at a camp? And who was that boy w-who saved me?” The younger girl asked in a quiet voice. “This camp houses demigods, there a two from what everyone knows. One for Greek gods and one for Roman gods. The boy who saved you is my best friend Chase, he’s a child of Hermes! Speaking of Hermes, you’ll be staying in that cabin until your godly parent claims you.” The elder girl pointed at the Hermes cabin. “The gods have specific cabins for them and their children, and depending on your mom or dad you could end up housing with me or Chase.”
After the tour, there was dinner, after dinner it was time for everyone to sit around the big campfire. Everyone was laughing, talking, and telling stories. One kid asked Hana if she knew her godly parent yet, but before she could answer something flashed above her head.
The warm glow of a fireplace hung over her head. Everyone stopped talking, looking shocked. Hana was the first ever child of Hestia! From the back of all the campers you can hear someone yell “All hail Hanako! Daughter of Hestia!” And just like that everyone bowed.
After all that craziness, Hanako was escorted to her own cabin. She let out a small thank you before going inside. To her surprise there was a woman waiting inside, but this woman felt oddly familiar. Almost as if Hana saw her before! The woman turned around and said “We have quite a lot to catch up on, Hanako.” With a welcoming smile. Just like that Hana dropped her bag and ran to the woman. It didn’t take long to figure out that she was her godly parent.
That night the two girls talked and talked till midnight. That’s when Hestia tucked Hana into bed. For the first time in a year she finally felt happy, and that night she went to sleep wearing a smile. The next day Hana sat by a tree relaxing when suddenly two boy came out of nowhere! One had black hair, blue eyes, and he had some freckles on his nose. The other had light brown hair and cyan blue eyes and wore a black baseball hat.
“We h-heard you were the daughter of Hestia and w-we were w-wondering i-if you would like to-“ “What he’s trying to say, is that we wondering if you to be friends!” The brunette interrupted. “A-are you sure you want a crybaby like me to be your friend??” The boys looked at each other and smiled (the brunette smiling more brighter and the blackette smile more small)
They nodded and reached out their hands to her’s. At first she hesitated but quickly grabbed their hands, afraid they might disappear. When she grabbed their hand it was like weights were lifted off her chest. She never realized until now, how important friends and family are until recently . “I’m Xavier and the dork with the freckles is Kai!” “I AM NOT A DORK!! I’m just not that great when it comes to ladies!” “Right, Right.” The brunette said sarcastically. “Anyway my godly parent is Hermes and Kai’s Mother is Athena!”
Maybe thing we’re starting to take a turn for the better.
Once she met those two Hanako started coming out of her shell more. She was still quiet and anxious but it isn’t as bad as before. Not to mention she gets more loud and energetic with Xavier and Kai around!
Hanako HATES libraries and bookshelf. She’ll go in a library if she has to, but she avoids them as best she can. If she’s ever in a vicinity of a bookshelf she’ll distance herself as much as possible. Let’s just say she gets very anxious and nervous when she around them.
If you ever asked about Hana’s past she would never be ashamed to tell you what happened. She isn’t happy about the events that took place but there’s nothing she can do about it know. So know matter what Hanako always tries to keep her head up high when it comes to her past.

🌸Some side notes here🌸
(Don’t mind the last one’s eyes being blue. I was trying to decide if I wanted to stick with yellow or try something new-)
(I can go more into depth on Hanako’s two besties if anyone would be interested)
(I’m also thinking of reintroducing her because the first one is her in twst but she’s like that in every fandom basically. Obviously I won’t delete the first one I just wanna talk about everything she’s in and what her relations are to everyone!)

WangJi is not familiar with YiLing.
His first sight of the town had been marred by the stress of the six day travel, and all the unpleasantness that the trip had encompassed.  Their inability to find any accommodations for the Lan Sect escort had also contributed to the unfavorable impression. Overall, YiLing is not much smaller than Gusu, but significantly older, its streets and canals having sprouted wherever they were needed.
There is symmetry and regularity to Gusu that has always appealed to WangJi’s need for clearly discernible orderliness; it had been designed with care, roads proportionally wide to the demand, the street market restricted to specific areas built to accommodate the resulting foot traffic.
In contrast, YiLing had formed itself around a popular trade route both by land and by water, and had grown as the fame of the Immortal Mountain had grown, without any order or forethought. Some alleys are wider than the main roads, some are cobblestones and the others dirt, and in some, stubborn weeds and vines have taken root, choking the nearby walls and hedges. Some canals have so many bridges, that one could cross half of YiLing just hopping across them; some only have single, narrow bridge, and those are perpetually clogged by carts and carriages. Handsome mansions sit next to houses of ill repute, next to tanneries and farriers, the stench mixing heavily in the day’s heat. The street markets have taken root wherever there is space, and in many places where they clearly should not have, their stands and awnings blocking the thoroughfare. The result is haphazard at best, an overwhelming chaos made worse by the seven-day festival in honor of the Emperor’s birthday.
Wei WuXian loves it.
WangJi can hardly keep up with him. It is a relief to know that Nie MingJue has stationed multiple members of the Nie Sect throughout the town, because Wei WuXian seems to have entirely forgotten to worry about his own safety. Everything is fascinating to him; everything is new, and exciting, and worthy of exclaiming over. Not a single piece of cloth, or an ornament, or a children’s toy has been overlooked. Wei WuXian has to touch everything, ask about everything, haggle over everything. His smile is so wide and bright that WangJi is finding it hard to focus on anything else. Multiple times, he has found Wei WuXian’s hand wrapped around his wrist, tugging on his sleeve, pressing on his shoulder. He is like a child who needs to see everything, but also needs WangJi to see it as well, even if Wangji hardly has time to offer an opinion, before being tugged to the next stand, the next alley, the next bridge.
Wei WuXian has dressed to blend in. His robes are dark gray, lined in red, sleeves tightly tied off at the wrists. It is a uniform more suited to a rogue cultivator, or perhaps a second or third young master of a middling clan. But WangJi is certain that no set of dark, unadorned robes would ever prevent Wei WuXian from standing out. His smile is infectious; people smile back without meaning to, as if compelled by some invisible force. Those that do not, are still left looking dazed, blinking into the space where his smile had been moments ago. The red ribbon in Wei WuXian’s hair is perhaps the most conspicuous part of his outfit, fluttering as he darts from one corner of the street to another, a bright splash of color WangJi can easily follow even when left behind.
“Did you know you look an awful lot like the Emperor?” an old lady says to him, and Wei WuXian laughs loudly, turning to WangJi.
“Did you hear that Lan Zhan? What do you think? Am I as handsome as the Emperor?”
WangJi feels his face heat, but Wei WuXian is already skipping away, exclaiming over a row of grass butterflies. He buys three of them for A-Yuan, then dashes to the next colorful thing, a row of bright scarves embroidered with lotus flowers.
They have long lost sight of Nie MingJue and XiChen; WangJi knows they had not intended to stick closely to one another throughout the evening, as the sight of two Lan Sect members together may raise suspicion. They do not know if the assassin or their accomplices have eyes and ears in YiLing; the rumors in the Immortal Mountain City have placed the Young Masters of the Lan Sect in the Imperial Gardens, along with the Emperor, and Jiang WanYin had been quite insistent that they do nothing to compromise the plans set in motion. Both WangJi and XiChen had dressed simply enough to be mistaken for the Lan Sect escort still residing outside the YiLing proper, but once they are standing side by side, their resemblance is difficult to ignore. Still, WangJi knows his brother will worry, and wishes he could at least catch a glimpse of him in the crowded streets.
“Lan Zhan! Lan Zhan! Look at this!”
Wei WuXian had stumbled upon rows of paper lanterns, each one delicately painted with a different woodland creature in careful strokes. These are, by no means, the first paper lanterns they have seen on their trek across the market. Later in the evening, when the darkness fully sets, thousands of them will be released to the sky, as is tradition on every fifth day of the Emperor’s birthday festival. But these are the first lanterns WangJi has not found visually overwhelming, and he watches Wei WuXian haggle with the merchant for a little while, before simply stuffing the amount the man had wanted into his hands.
“Lan Zhan! He was going to sell it for less!”
The man shoots Wei WuXian a look that clearly says he was not going to do any such thing, but WangJi does not care either way.
“Which one?” he asks, and that is all it takes for Wei WuXian to become distracted again, exclaiming over hedgehogs and deer, until he settles on a lantern depicting a white rabbit.
“Do you like rabbits, Lan Zhan?”
WangJi nods. He has never before considered his feelings about rabbits in any detail, but now, he finds himself quite fond of them.
“Hm, I think we should eat. What do you think? After, we can find a peaceful spot to watch the lantern festival.”
Anything with a word peaceful in it is more than satisfactory to WangJi, and he nods again, letting Wei WuXian pull him to the nearest winehouse.
The common room is crowded and loud, the stench of alcohol mixing with the sharp scent of spices. Majority of the patrons seem to be merchants, but WangJi sees a few cultivator swords leaning against the table edges, despite the fact that their owners lack discernible sect uniforms. YiLing has always been a popular town for rogue cultivators. The Immortal Empress herself had belonged to no sect or clan, and each year, even the largest Sects see a number of disciples leave to strike out on their own, the idea of being anchorless and sectless doubtlessly more romantic in theory than it turns out being in truth. Still, WangJi is more focused on ascertaining if any of them are Sect members in disguise, than he is on Wei WuXian’s conversation with the serving girl.
Once the proprietor approaches however, he finally recognizes that there is an issue.
A single glance at the man’s face explains the situation fully, and WangJi steps closer to Wei WuXian, who is still visibly confused.
“We should leave,” WangJi says softly.
Wei WuXian does not listen. The common room is crowded, but there are clearly at least two unoccupied tables, and Wei WuXian does not understand why the serving girl would pretend otherwise.
The proprietor, unlike the serving girl, has no qualms about speaking plainly, “The Lan sect is not welcome here.”
WangJi had remained a few steps behind Wei WuXian, and cannot see the expression on his face, but he can perceive the telltale stiffening of his shoulders, the tightening of his grip on the sword. WangJi feels a moment of pity for XiChen, having to deal with his own eerily similar reaction in MoLing.
“Excuse me?” Wei WuXian says, his voice cold.
The exchange has drawn notice of the few nearby tables, most of them occupied by men who clearly know how to use their swords, and WangJi can see this situation escalating past the point where it can be managed peacefully.
He grabs Wei WuXian by the elbow and pulls him backwards, stepping in front of him.
“Forgive my friend,” he says, bowing to the proprietor, “he meant no offense. We are leaving.”
He has to physically push Wei WuXian outside. The line of his back is iron hard under WangJi’s hand, and his grip on the sword has not loosened.
“How dare he?” he bursts out, before they are even fully in the street, and WangJi pushes him harder, hoping to put some distance between them and the common room as quickly as possible.
“Do not be angry,” he says softly.
“Do not be angry?” Wei WuXian spits out, fury making his voice vibrate, “By the time I am done, he will be lucky to run a QiShan whorehouse!”
WangJi steers him down an empty alley, afraid that someone might decide to follow, “We are in disguise. The proprietor mistook you for a rogue cultivator. He did not know that he was insulting the Emperor.”
“He knew he was insulting you!” Wei WuXian whirls to face him, his expression outraged.
This is the second time WangJi has seen him angry in response to the mistreatment of the Lan Sect. It is just as overwhelming as the last time, and he is equally as incapable of formulating the correct response.
“This is YiLing,” he says, “the home of the Empress. The Lan Sect has never been welcome here.”
“Are you saying that they are all like this?” Wei WuXian’s voice is dangerous now, and WangJi does not know how to answer that question in a way that will deescalate the situation.
He should have known that this would happen. He should have steered Wei WuXian away from the places that he knows are likely to refuse to serve him.
It was stupid and thoughtless of him to forget. The evening had been going so well. Wei WuXian had been genuinely happy, and now he is furious, and WangJi does not know how to fix what he had broken.
Feeling agitated and unsure, he reaches for Wei WuXian’s hand, “Do not be angry. The street merchants will not care what sect I am from. We can buy food from them.”
He watches Wei WuXian’s anger bleed away in a rush, but it is replaced by frustration and grief, both nearly as crushing as the anger had been.
His fingers press into the back of WangJi’s hand, “Is it like that everywhere?”
“Sometimes,” WangJi says, “but it does not matter right now. You wanted to eat. We should do so before the festival starts, and the streets become crowded. Come on.”
He tugs Wei WuXian slightly, desperate that the subject be dropped, desperate for the return of the happy, smiling Wei WuXian, who seemed to not have a care in the world.
Wei WuXian lets himself be led, but it is a long time before he smiles again.

The Great Supernatural Rewatch Project - Salvation
I started writting this in the middle of season 13 but RL and work and some mental health issues made me take a step back from fandom in general and well, I was also fearing this would be an unending job since the series JUST.KEPT. GOING.
However, now that the series is done (And omg, what a clusterfuck that was. My tallies are going to go insane if I get there) and thus there’s an ending in sight, I will do my best to finish season 1, and try and get the rest of the seasons in a more timely manner. Say, before they do the inevitable reunion and ignore the last episode completely.
(I’m going to be honest, part of the problem was that Supernatural used to be SO good back then, and when I see the new episodes I weep a bit inside. I can’t believe they were so much better at creating story arcs when they weren’t TRYING to create story arcs)
Of course, now we all know that Dean’s plots in general will not have a happy ending no matter what, and that makes that particular tally bittersweet. But there are STILL people who claim that nope, Dean was never mistreated by the writers and well, Jack damn it, I am not going to let that claim go without bringing numbers to the table. Hopefully, it won’t take me 15 years to finish (Because by then, I would be the only one caring I guess)
In any case, last lap for Season 1 and we begin with Salvation.
Tumblr media
General stuff
A specific reason for me having rage quitted this episode in particular for so long: For some stupid copyright thing with Netflix, they don’t have Carry On My Wayward Son as the song for the final recap –at least in Netflix Latam. And Supernatural without Carry On My Wayward Son is no Supernatural. So I had to hunt my DVDs. Then my computer DVD player died. Then I decided to make 5 webcomics at the same time. THEN I decided to start doing illustration works, and three other projects and let’s just say I am a bit of a workaholic and leave it like that as the rest is not SPN-related.
Ahem.
Funny thing about the Road so Far –you know, besides being a LOT shorter than the ones we’re getting now- is that it focuses a lot more on DEAN at the beginning, while if you watch the show, well, we know most of those Dean scenes come from MoW episodes and not the actual mytharc. Another interesting thing is that if one believes those things to be chronological, it makes it as if the Colt had been with the brothers for a lot longer than half an episode, and that Sam’s issue with the visions is not that recent. Edition Magic everyone! Also, omg, they were babies when the series started, and how WEIRD is to see John looking at them with pride and smiling at Dean at some points.
Anyway, the recap and the epicness that is Carry On my Wayward Son ends and we start the actual plot.
Hello Pastor Jim. Goodbye Pastor Jim. And here Supernatural begins the long, long tradition of killing characters who could’ve been useful later on, and more importantly, that could’ve been the boys’s support system later on. While here it’s understandable since we need to show how dangerous and vicious Meg is –ah, irony that in about 8 seasons people will be rooting for her Redemption- it also makes the Hunters kind of useless. I mean, he has all that weaponry and only uses a knife? Sigh. Really, a waste. Pastor Jim as a concept was really intriguing –and I don’t think we’ve heard of any other hunter who was also a priest. Funny, when we have so many demons free now. There’s also the fact that when Pastor Jim claims that she can’t be in the church because it’s hallowed ground, she replies that “That might work with the minor leagues, but not with her” and I wonder… did we ever got a demon that couldn’t enter a church? Because right now out of the top of my head I can’t remember, and yet Pastor Jim was surprised but later no one seems to think it weird there were signs of demonic activity around his body. Another sign that, as engaging as the series was, once we start digging the world building, things fall apart very quickly.
Actually, if I may digress for a bit, here we have the very first look at Supernatural´s second biggest problem: killing support characters that may have been useful lately. Here it is because Kirkpe had this weird idea that Hunting would never be glamorized by the show/fandom and it would be a completely miserable and lonely existence. He also didn’t think that the series would survive past season 2. So, ok, killing the guy we only knew by throw away lines didn’t seem so bad. By season 13 every single recurring character had died at least once –and there were petitions to bring back I think every one of those who haven’t come back- it’s a big problem.
As I restarted writing, I also realized that the mere existence of Pastor Jim and his room of awesome research and weapons creates a problem in the future about the Men of Letters because… ok, so ONE member of the clerigy knew enough about demons and stuff to be a hunter and have THE Hunter as his main contact (John Winchester was sort of a legend back then. And he had also fell out of contact with many others so the fact that he and Pastor Jim were still friendly? Kind of interesting), but what about the rest? Did the Vatican have any contact with the British men of Letters or the American ones? And if so, what the hell did they think when suddenly ALL the Men of Letters disappeared? Ok, so that’s a lot of stuff that doesn’t matter right now as it won’t actually exist until much, much, MUCH latter, but see what I mean when I say that they didn’t plan anything and the lack of a series bible hurts the show more than it helped it thrive? I am realizing right now I could write a whole treaty on the Men of Letters and their non-relationship with hunters ONLY using this cold beginning and the Henry Winchester episode.
But this is not the time for that, so we get our title card and a very, VERY young Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
We move to John who is explaining off camera everything he knows about Yellow Eye´s plan. We can tell it´s not much as he thinks it came out of hibernation and that the whole attacking families is part of a cycle, but back then it was impressive how much he had managed to find out about this demon. We also know that it attacks exactly when the baby in the house is six months old, which brings us to this little jewel:
JOHN It starts in Arizona, then New Jersey, California. Houses burned down to the ground. It's going after families, just like it went after us.
SAM Families with infants?
JOHN Yeah. The night of the kid's six-month birthday.
SAM I was six months old that night?
JOHN Exactly six months.
SAM So basically, this demon is going after these kids for some reason. The same way it came for me? So Mom's death...Jessica. It's all because of me?
DEAN We don't know that Sam.
SAM Oh really? Cause I'd say we're pretty damn sure Dean.
DEAN For the last time, what happened to them was not your fault.
SAM Right. It's not my fault but it's my problem.
DEAN No it's not your problem it's our problem!
Now, in the following seasons we will know that yes, it was ALL about Sam. But right now, the characters and the viewers don´t know that. We know that a lot of families were killed by the demon (That at this point was still “The demon” and wouldn´t become Azazael until later), and that he doesn´t take the children. So… how did Sam leap from “this demon attacks families with 6 month old children” to “It´s all about ME!”? He even ignores that Dean and John lost Mary for his last line, when he decides it´s his problem and not their problem. Also, and this is important for the “Dean is the most awful person to Sam” crowd… Dean immediately tells Sam that no, it´s not his fault. While he could harbor some ill feelings against Sam –and demon Dean, 8 seasons later, will voice them- at this point he is 100% on Sam´s side. There’s also a sideway glance from John to DEAN when Sam claims that everything is about him, and then I wonder exactly why, if John knew all about the fact that the demon chased six month old children specifically, he never resented Sam over it. One would think that given John’s love for Mary and deep desire to revenge, Sam would really be the outcast and the one only treated like a soldier (as he claims he was, but not really as we’ve seen), instead of Dean who was completely blameless in the whole thing.
(Also, this is the first time we see that Azazael´s plan didn´t make much sense IF we believed that Kirkpe had everything planned. But that´s a discussion for another time)
Anyway, John interrupts the argument to explain that while he has no idea what the demon is after (Another thing that later would be contradicted as he knew Sam had powers), but that he has managed to figure out his pattern of attack to the point that it even repeated it for Jessica’s killing (Even if much, much later, we’ll learn that it wasn’t Azazael the one who killed her, and Demons would completely forego the signs when attacking. Have I mentioned I miss the times when the myths made sense?) and the three of them pack up for their first real hunt together as they decide they will save the next baby on the demon’s list, in a town named Salvation.
Important thing to note: when John recites the demon signs, Dean immediately replies “that happened in Lawerence”. He remembers, quite clearly, what happened a week before his mother died even if logistically, at his age? He wouldn’t care nor notice. Sure, he remembers his mom’s death because that was traumatic. But random cow deaths before that? Weird show.
If Sam noticed or not the signs before Jessica died, we don’t know. John is the one who points out they happened.
After two gorgeous road shots where we see John’s truck being followed by Baby (yet another thing we lost, John’s truck. I know we needed to have the guys together all the time, but man, if Sam had inherited it, they would’ve been able to cover more terrain at times, have double the arsenal and maybe not being identified by everyone and their leviathan in season 7, but I digress), and just entering Salvation John stops, obviously spooked by something. As Dean stops behind him, they find out that Pastor Jim is dead, and John got a call from another hunter named Caleb to tell him. They assume it may be the demon they’re chasing, or maybe another demon that was looking for Pastor Jim specifically but that last theory is not very probable.
Here I have to pause to applaud Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s acting, as you can practically FEEL John’s despair at knowing an old friend of him died, and that HE was probably the cause for that death. A Winchester trait, of course, blaming themselves for everything bad that happens in their world, but unlike Sam’s early outburst, here it seems far more desperate. Of course, JDM had a lot more experience than Jared at that point, but I really wanted to make a note of it because we lost a LOT of that characterization for John, where he actually WORRIED about people and not just the hunt. Even as he decides the plan for finding out what baby the demon will take in a week, we can see him broken and confused. So much that while Sam calls him “sir” when receiving orders, Dean continues the conversation by calling him “Dad”.
John then declares that this ends now, obviously feeling responsible for what happened to his friend. A long shot from the flanderized man we’d hear about in future seasons who was infamous for letting his hunting partners die without so much as a second glance.
Also, and not to be mean to the writers, but in their endless accidentally making Sam unsympathetic, they made him say that there were too many children in the county that could be a victim and that it would take forever to check all of them. While I KNOW the intent was to make clear that they had a deadline of one week, it comes out weirdly as “I don’t want to do the footwork.” Seriously, writers should be careful with that.
Actually, let’s dissect that. Because I just thought of two ways they could’ve fixed it AND give us more info.
JOHN Now we act like every second counts. There's two hospitals and a health centre in this county. We split up, cover more ground. I want records. I want a list of every infant that's going to be six months old in the next week.
SAM Dad that could be dozens of kids. How do we know which one's the right one?
JOHN We check em all that's how. You got any better ideas?
SAM No sir.
So, first way to make Sam not look that bad: Give the line to Dean. I wouldn’t like it specially, but hey, he’s the sidekick, not the hero, and so far he has only wanted to bail on ONE hunt because he wasn’t sure it was a supernatural hunt so he’d be better standing than Sam in that regard.
Second way: Make Sam say that YES, he has a better idea. Because the brothers ALREADY faced Max, so he could say they could look for a baby that was a bit “strange”, like, with poltergeist stuff going around. John could not believe him, but at least Sam would be being proactive.
In any case, they separate as John planned and we see each of them get into the hospital records. We get a glimpse of John’s collection of fake IDs, that include one for a Morgue forensic doctor, then Sam getting a homely nurse giving him files and him taking notes, and Dean… getting flirty with a very hot nurse.
And I make a point of the “Oh, look, Dean is an irresponsible womanizer” trope because once again the writers shoot themselves in the foot by showing the opposite of what they were telling (And no, this time I can’t blame it on Jensen’s acting and refusal to look at his female co-stars without respect).
WOMAN Hi. Is there anything I can do for you?
DEAN (smiling) Oh God yes.
She smiles and looks down.
DEAN (Holding up his ID) Only I'm uh....working right now, so...
The writers here make us remember that a) Dean is AMAZINGLY charismatic, as the woman IS flattered and seems interested, and b) That he will NOT dump his work for a quickie. We don’t even get a “maybe later” that could make him look as if he was really into her. It’s just that he flirts naturally, or at least, this is what we can infer now, as so far he hasn’t had any one night stand fling. The one time we saw him have a sexual encounter in the middle of a hunt was with an ex-girlfriend.
And again I have to wonder what was Sera Gamble’s intention with those scenes as yes, this was written by the same team as Faith, another episode where Sam’s good intentions tend to have a darker side, and gave Dean some amazingly cool scenes.
We don’t know what Dean says to the woman, as we cut back to Sam, coming out of the hospital just in time to have a very convenient vision of a woman, a nursery and a fire. Thankfully, the vision also comes with the useful audio hint of a train passing by, so Sam gets out his map and starts checking where that could be, which leads him to the house in his vision.
And by this point, we know we’re in the right track and this is an important Myth Arc episode, because Sam only has multiple visions in Myth Arc episodes, and he has one the moment he steps in front of the house in said vision. The gods of convenience smile upon him as right then and there a woman pushing a pram comes by, and he manages to talk to her, all friendly like by pretending to having just moved. Then Sam learns the woman’s name is Monica, her baby is Rosie, and Rosie is just six months old, exactly to the day.
Also, that she’s a very quiet baby and that it sometimes seems as if she was reading your mind. Oh, and that Monica really is blind to suspicious men asking her about her family with a face that reads “Oh shit, this is bad”.
Now, HERE is where the whole “five year myth arc” story falls completely. I mean, we already knew it was pretty unlikely it was real, given Kirkpe’s original interviews, but the mere existence of Rosie contradicts every single future story beat. Because if SHE has powers before Azazael goes into her house, then it means that the babies he was hunting didn’t get powers because of him, just that his blood either connected them (hence Sam’s very specific visions), made said powers far more powerful (quite likely), or made them a little bit more prone to violence/prideful behavior. All of those possibilities match with the plan of “raising” a new King or Queen of Hell, that would be faithful to Azazael, but are a bit iffy on the “finding Lucifer’s vessel” thing. Especially since we later learn that the Angels were also helping, and all Hell knew that Lucifer’s vessel HAD to come from the Winchester/Campbell bloodline due to Cain and Abel being the roots of said bloodline, and later pretty much everyone knew Sam was Lucifer’s vessel so the whole targeting a ton of kids, in particular after Mary’s death, is kinda weird.
Oh, Lux, you will say, it is because he wanted to hide his true intentions! No one knew that Sam had been feed demon blood!
Except that the important parties, namely Heaven and Hell, did. Michael had Heaven convinced of his orders, so even if a rogue angel found out that they were speed running the Apocalypse, said angel could be killed. And any demon who was against getting Lucifer back on top would be smart enough to keep quiet so, why the secrecy?
And again, ok, I buy the original demon blood kids being important to “hide” Lucifer’s vessel but… Rosie? What good would it do to Azazael’s plan to have a psychic 4 year old when Lucifer rose? Was “little four year old girl” a good match against a grown up hunter? What was Azazel thinking, if that was the plan all the time?
Now, I want to make clear this doesn’t make THIS episode or the Season-myth arc bad. This original “Boy King of Hell” storyline WAS good. It had a lot of potential, made sense for Sam and since it was before the days of the eternal “What is wrong with Sam?” seasons, there was no boredom of a repeat. It also set a very good question of what made a monster a monster, which would be explored a bit more in Season 2. And it was long before we realized Dean having a myth arc was a pipe dream, so there was no issue there either. It made sense.
But the fact that the writers kind of forgot about everything I just pointed out with Rosie’s scene to try and weld this to the “Heaven vs. Hell” storyline in season 4, and then just promptly forgot because Sam’s powers were then firmly connected to Azazael’s blood so they never came up again and even worse, we never find another psychic kid that could’ve been feed blood by Azazael THIS year that John was chasing him? (Since we know there were no other survivors from Sam’s generation, and later we have a scene that proves that there were no previous generations to Sam’s), it's kind of weird. Personally, I dunno about you, but maybe a return to this storyline in season 6 would’ve been a lot better than we got. Maybe.
By the way, I am not counting the Boy King of Hell story arc as a dropped plot for Sam yet, as we’re going to keep with this at least until season 3. Yes, now we know it didn’t go anywhere, but at the time, and for these episodes in particular, it was THE myth arc of Supernatural. So it can’t be counted as dropped plot yet.
In any case, Sam goes and tells John and Dean about his vision and… oh, boy do we have to move John’s reaction to Emotional Violence.
It’s not good.
But before he can do more damage to Dean’s psyche, Sam gets a call from our favorite demon, Meg. Even if he doesn’t recognize her voice immediately which is weird because a) he did throw her off a window and one would think that makes a girl memorable, and b) it’s not as he knows that many girls who would call him, despite Dean’s best efforts to get him a new girl.
Meg dismisses Sam and asks for John. She makes clear that she is not playing, that she knows he has the Colt and that he will kill every single person who has ever helped John unless he gives it to her that same day at midnight. And to the brothers’ surprise, John accepts those terms (Unfortunately not before we loss Caleb too. I have a lot less interest in Caleb as a character given that he has exactly half a line in the whole show, but it’s still it’s sad to see a guy so defiant even in the face of death go so soon).
Meg also points out that John having the Colt is a “declaration of war” which is interesting as it sort of implies that if he hadn’t gotten it, then the demons would leave him and the brothers alone. And I find that incredibly funny since… no they won’t. And Azazael would’ve been ok if Sam kept the gun anyway, given why they really wanted and once again I am putting holes on the idea that this was planned from the start, aren’t I?
In any case, John declares that Meg is a demon “or is possessed by one” which… ok? First and only time we get the possibility of a demon not using a meat suit. I don’t think this is a mistake, because after all, this is back before the guys faced demons in a normal basis so they could believe that they had their own bodies besides the ones they possessed (And, more importantly, before there was a retcon that made the brothers face and know about demons since pretty much ever). To be completely fair, as much as I love Jimmy and the whole Lucifer arc once it started to make sense… I would’ve been ok if vessels weren’t needed. It added a lot of complications and ended up making the brothers actual serial killers.
Ahem.
After that little gem of wisdom that will be ignored forever, John declares that he will be taking the gun to Meg to avoid more killing and we get another questionable line for Sam. And I am curious as to how to tally it as it’s the opposite of him wanting to leave the hunt, but it’s not that nice either:
DEAN What do we do?
JOHN I'm going to Lincoln. DEAN What? JOHN It doesn't look lilke we have a choice. If I don't go, a lot of people die, our friends die.
SAM Dad, the demon is coming tonight. For Monica and her family. That gun is all we got, you can't just hand it over.
I mean, yes, it is true that the demon is coming for Monica (Well, actually, he’s coming for Rosie, the baby, but I will let that slip pass. Sam is not interested in married ladies), and that with the gun they can kill the demon but it’s not all they’ve got. By this time, Sam has already had his big hero moment when he exorcised a plane in free fall so they could do that, then chase the demon again and then kill it.
But what is jarring is how he hears “a lot of people die, OUR FRIENDS die” and he goes “yeah, whatever, we have a mission to fulfill”.
Which is precisely what later episodes will tell us John used to do, and was the reason why John was not exactly liked by the general hunter population. And at the same time, it’s an eerie reminder of Wendigo, where Sam is willing to let innocents die (his family friends, in this particular case, just as he heard Caleb choke on his own blood) in order to get his way (revenge on the demon that killed Jess. NOT revenge on the demon that killed his mom, since at this point, Sam is still on the “I never knew that woman” train of thought).
Sure, his mind is in the hunt, and that’s commendable because yes, in the long run, killing Azazael would save more innocents (And probably stop the Apocalypse, not that Sam or the writers at that time know it), but it is still strange to see our nominal hero simply not care for his friends’ lives. I mean, at this point WE don’t know about Bobby, so the closest to a parental figure that is not John that Sam had was Pastor Jim and he just DIED.
Worst part is, this could be solved really easy: Just have DEAN be the one who voices the complaint, and have “empathic” Sam mumble that there has to be a way to save everyone (Which, of course, John will mention in a second). It would make Dean look bad, sure, but we’ve been told once and again that Dean never, EVER goes against John plans. Which… not true, ut we will talk about that later. The scene continues, and John declares that he will go to Meg alone, with a fake Colt and while Dean thinks that that won’t work, Sam has a different complaint:
DEAN Yeah but for how long? What happens when she figures it out?
JOHN I just...I just need to buy a few hours, that's all.
SAM You mean for Dean and me. You want us to stay here, and kill this demon by ourselves?
JOHN No Sam. I want to stop losing people we love. I want you to go to school, I want Dean to have a home. I want....I want Mary alive. It's just....I just want this to be over.
And oh, boy. Do this four lines again hold so much weight.
First, once again, Dean seems to be worried for John (logically, he’s their dad), while Sam is making the weirdest line in the universe sort of work because he’s complaining that John is trusting them to kill the demon, something HE wants to do and not four seconds ago was saying they had to do, as if it was John shifting HIS job to Sam. Seriously, I don’t want to think the worst of Sam but when you take out Jared’s acting, the text doesn’t do the younger Winchester’s any favors.
And finally… John’s lines that encompass pretty much Dean’s philosophy in the following seasons. “I want to stop losing people we love” is pretty telling, but what comes next? He actually WANTS Sam to go back to college and not worry about the Supernatural. He actively agrees that Dean doesn’t have a home, and WANTS Dean to have one. It’s as close as love as we’ll see from John to Dean in Season 1, and it hurts. It hurts because we can tell he knows he won’t be there to see it… and now, in hindsight with the finale having aired, we also know Dean didn’t get that. (And to be fair, this is the John who did deserve Heaven. Not the flanderized version we’d get in the future)
Although, ironically, Mary got to be alive again, so… One out of three?
(No, seriously, it’s obvious the writers didn’t even remember this speech when Season 12 hit, much less Season 15)
Ahem.
Dean is sent to get a fake Colt, while Sam and John wait for him. If they talked about anything, we don’t know, but when they exchange guns, Dean voices what we all know is true:
DEAN You know this is a trap don't you. That's why Meg wants you to come alone?
JOHN I can handle her. I got a whole arsenal loaded. Holy water, Mandaic, amulets...
DEAN Dad... JOHN What? DEAN Promise me something. JOHN What's that. DEAN This thing goes south just...get the hell out. Don't get yourself killed all right, you're no good to us dead. JOHN Same goes for you. (There is a long pause) All right listen to me. They made the bullets special for this colt. There's only four of them left. Without them this gun is useless. You make every shot count.
SAM Yes sir.
JOHN Been waiting a long time for this fight. Now it's here I'm not gonna be in it. It's up to you boys now. It's your fight, you finish this. You finish what I started. Understand?
Again, I wish they remembered all they had to get rid of demons before, you know, killing everyone willy-nilly. I mean, I don’t even think I know what Mandalac IS but hey, John says it works, it works. And once more, Dean gets a line that makes clear he is the empathic, loving brother, when it wouldn’t have hurt Sam to say it. In fact, it would make clear that no matter what, he doesn’t hate John. But nope, Sam only acts like the soldier we’re TOLD Dean is, while Dean makes clear that for him, family is more important than revenge (And boy will that come to bite him in the ass later, not in the series, but in this same episode).
Also, I have to admit. When I started this rewatch, John’s final line was just a good moment for John to start letting go of his anger. Now? After that horrid finale? It hurts so, so much. But it hurts more because I KNOW that there’s no way it was intentional. Obviously, Kirkpe didn’t know the series would last 15 years, and I highly doubt Dabb remembered this scene when writing 15x20. But even so, it ends up being Dean’s epitaph. OUCH.
In any case, the Winchester separate again, and we go into act three. Get ready for the feels.
John Winchester hunting alone is a thing of beauty. Seeing him scope the place, check the water tank and immediately think of a plan? Makes me wish Jeffrey Dean Morgan had stayed longer on the show. Sure, John became an asshole, but in this episode he’s still not that bad, we still have no episodes that make clear he didn’t care for Dean, and wasn’t textually abusive. And I am willing to bet that if JDM had stayed, John would’ve evolved more to be a Bobby-like character. But well, What ifs is not why you came to this meta for.
As John is hunting, the brothers are staking out the house were they know Azazael will attack. And while they talk and decide that they have no way to get the family out (In a nice callback to how none of their excuses ever work) we get to this little gem of an exchange:
SAM I wonder how Dad's doing.
DEAN I'd feel a lot better if we were there backing him up.
SAM I'd feel a lot better if he were here backing us up.
Where once again we see where the brother’s priorities lie, and I wonder why the hell the writers ever thought they were writing Sam as an empathic character.
Because yes, Dean is wishing he could be out there helping his Dad, proving that for him, it has always been about the family. Not the hunting, but the protecting. But Sam doesn’t want to protect John. He wants John protecting Them. And helping them in the revenge hunt, not trying to save others.
Sure, we know the brothers are there to save an innocent mother, but John is also saving a ton of hunters and people who, in the past, were nice and open to the family. And it would’ve been so much easier to make Sam look better if he instead had said “I’d feel a lot better if we hadn’t had to separate” or something like that, that proved he saw BOTH missions were important.
Seriously, I do wonder why the writers made these choices, and I wish someone had asked this at cons.
We go back to John, who, really, Is an amazing hunter even if he is a horrible father. Also, I wonder if he got ordained at a web church, in order to be able to sanctify water. That would be such a John Winchester thing to do, and I do wonder why the boys never did it too. ANYWAY, he hands the gun to Meg, and to her ally that came so that we could have a scene to prove the Colt is fake as the ally shoots Meg.
As John says, Meg was lucky the gun was fake. And once again, I do wonder what the plan was if it WAS the Colt. I mean, Meg was Azazael’s second in command. Why would nameless demon risk killing her? Or did he kinow the gun was fake?
In any case, this makes the moment where we can be 100% sure that Meg’s meat suit 1.0 was dead. I mean, she could’ve survived the fall in Shadow, but a bullet to the chest? No way.
We go back to the brothers, and Sam breaks every single law of a procedural show by giving this great speech about how thankful he is to Dean for everything, and how he needs to say that “in case” something happened.
Dean is definitely not impressed and reminds him that the only one dying today is Azazael.
As we see John temporarily escape from Meg and her muscle boy, we go back to the brothers who see the demon omens start up so they get ready for the final fight.
The brothers manage to save Monica and her baby, despite the very understandable interference from Hubbard, the husband (I mean, you would not react nicely to two strangers intruding in your house and yelling to your wife to not go into the nursery room), however, before Sam can shoot Azazel, he disappears into smoke (A really interesting question here is, WHY did Sam wait to shoot and then wasted a bullet, but I digress).
Going completely against M.O, Azazael makes the CRIB burst into flames, but fortunately Dean has already gotten Rosie out of it so the brothers escape the flaming house. While Monica cries her thanks, Sam notices that Azazael is still inside, and tries to go after him, but Dean stops him because he is not going to lose his brother to the fire. By the way, I am not counting “Dean stopping Sam from going into a burning building” as “Dean forcing Sam to do something” since, uh, he was saving Sam’s life and it’s something anyone in Dean’s place would’ve done.
At the same time, we see John getting captured by Meg and her muscle boy because he didn’t think about getting a third escape route (But honestly? That was pretty much a plot necessity. John was HEAVILY prepared for that fight)
Back in the hotel, Dean is worried that John is not answering his calls, while Sam is furious that Dean didn’t let him kill himself by running into a burning house. They have a nasty fight that mirrors the one they had back in the pilot, but since it IS a fight between the brothers, you know the drill. We’re examining it under Violence.
Once Sam calms down, he tells Dean to try calling John again. Unfortunately, it’s Meg who answers and she tells Dean that they’re never seeing their dad again.
And we get the first “To be continued” for the series (Which to be honest, despite all the little continuity mistakes I mentioned here? Is still pretty epic)
Violence
Tumblr media
Well, we had to run out of episodes where the brothers don’t fight each other at some point, didn’t we?
This fight, over Sam wanting to kill himself in his search for revenge, is a very neat parallel to the fight they had back in the Pilot, over Sam NOT wanting to even involve himself in the family’s search for revenge. Which I know it’s supposed to be ironic and a show of character growth since now Dean is the one saying that revenge is not worth their lives but… it falls a little bit flat because the reason why Sam is so gung-ho in killing Azazael is, once again, a very selfish one and the way in he expresses it makes it quite clear. (Again, I do wonder if the writers stopped to think about the implications of Sam only getting really into hunting when it was about him or his losses?)
But let’s start at the beginning:
SAM If you had just let me go in there, I coulda ended all this.
DEAN Sam, the only thing you would have ended was your life.
SAM You don't know that.
DEAN So what, you're just willing to sacrifice yourself, is that it?
SAM Yeah. Yeah you're damn right I am.
DEAN Well that's not going to happen, not as long as I'm around.
This right here? Is a nice summary of the relationship of the brothers for the whole series. Sam wants to do something stupid, like, say, running into a burning building, Dean is there to stop him before he hurts himself.
Also, let’s make clear the use of first person by Sam. It’s not “We coulda ended this”, as in the family ending the hunt, but “I coulda ended this”. Again, at this point, not something that is a problem, but considering hindsight, we can see how the writers are completely invested in SAM as a sole main character, and write him as such, while Dean is more of the sidekick.
In any case, the argument continues, still not escalating to violence.
SAM What the hell are you talking about Dean, we've been searching for this demon our whole lives. It's the only thing we've ever cared about.
DEAN Sam I wanna waste it. I do. Okay? But it's not worth dying over.
SAM What?
DEAN I mean it. If hunting this demon means getting yourself killed then I hope we never find the damn thing.
Important thing how Sam apparently forgot he left for four (two) years and wanted out of the family business, now that he is angry and into the revenge thing. It’s not “You’ve been searching for this demon your whole life”, which would’ve been correct AND a logical counterargument against Dean. Before this episode, Sam was supposedly the brother who understood that revenge was a way of living, while Dean is the one who was Daddy’s little soldier. But here, when it actually would matter to the narrative, it is as if Sam’s wishes for a normal life are completely forgotten and it’s Dean the one who understands that there’s more to living than revenge (Which, btw, is consistent through the season despite everyone claiming that Dean needs Sam to keep hunting. All season, Dean has been giving Sam outs, telling him it’s ok to quit)
And of course, Dean here proves that Sam is more important to him than revenge for his mother, as he is willing to never get to kill the demon as long as his family, his brother in particular, survives.
Poor Dean.
SAM That thing killed Jess. That thing killed Mom.
DEAN You said yourself once, that no matter what we do, they're gone, and they're never coming back.
SAM Don't you say that, not you! Not after all this don't you say that.
DEAN Sam look. The three of us...that's all we have...and it's all I have. Sometimes I feel like I'm barely holding it together man...and without you or Dad....
Unfortunately, script doesn’t quiet convey the scene as there’s a LONG pause between “That thing killed Jess” and “That thing killed Mom”. Enough so that we can believe that Sam is using that second phrase not because he cares (in the Pilot he made clear he didn’t), but to make Dean get on board with the whole “I can kill myself if it means getting revenge” plan. In other words, once again, Sam is weaponizing Mary against Dean, and that is a really nasty habit the younger Winchester never quite shakes out of. Instead, Dean shows how he LISTENED to Sam back in the Pilot and repeats Sam’s words to him on the bridge.
Which is when Sam loses it and pushes Dean against a wall, Dean not defending himself at all, and yells that Dean has no right to say what Sam told Dean the very first hunt they had together after years of separation.
And of course, once Dean mentions their father, Sam starts calming down. NOT when Dean says that he’s barely holding it together, or that he only has them.   Just when he mentions their father who is, in Sam’s mind, the one who can help him get revenge.
The fight ends, but Sam never once apologizes for what he said to Dean, nor for the fight. Which, by the way, contradicts his claim that Dean “always has his back”.
Emotional Violence
Tumblr media
Whenever we have John on an episode, we’re going to have to talk about emotional violence and I kind of hate that because on one hand, I get how John could’ve been a very tragic figure that loved his sons but still wanted to avenge his wife, and not being the abusive bastard we know and don’t love that much.
When Sam and Dean explain about Sam’s visions, and how they started as nightmares but have grown in intensity, his reaction is quite subdued, but clear. He is not happy, but the problem isn’t the visions –for a man obsessed with the supernatural, his outward reaction to his younger son being a psychic is quite calm- but that they didn’t inform him of what was going on:
JOHN All right. When were you going to tell me about this?
DEAN We didn't know what it meant.
JOHN All right, something like this starts happening to your brother, you pick up the phone and you call me.
DEAN dumps the coffee jug and cup back on the counter and strides toward JOHN.
DEAN Call you? Are you kidding me? Dad I called you from Lawrence all right? Sam called you when I was dying. I mean, getting you on the phone? I got a better chance of winning the lottery.
JOHN You're right. Although I'm not too crazy about this new tone of yours, you're right. I'm sorry.
And let’s be clear, John’s anger is not directed at Sam, it’s directed at Dean. “Something like this starts happening to your brother” is not “Something like this starts happening to either of you”. Which is also a show of how good an actor JOHN is in universe because WE know that he knew. Missouri TOLD him point blank that Sam was powerful and that he could have known that John was around during the Home episode. But here, he acts as if this was news to him when he could ALSO have told them what to expect if that happened. (Mind you, I am assuming that Sera Gamble knew or remembered about Home’s script when writing this and didn’t just forget or was unaware that John was supposed to know)
Now, all season, Sam has been complaining and yelling about how John doesn’t answer their calls, doesn’t seem to care what’s going on with them. So it’d be logical and in character for Sam to say something here. But instead is DEAN, Dad’s little soldier, the one we’ve SEEN obeying John without question finally have enough and talk back to his father with some truths. And it’s VERY interesting that his first complain is not that John didn’t care that Dean almost died, but that he didn’t reply when Dean called from Lawrence. One could almost infer that Dean expected John not to care if Dean died, but was honestly hurt that he didn’t care about a case that could’ve involved MARY.
John, surprisingly, sort of agrees. He does say “I’m sorry”, which makes him the Winchester who is quicker to say those words… but he still manages to make a threat against Dean “I am not too crazy about this NEW tone of yours”.
Making it clear that before? Dean never talked back. And John doesn’t like it when his soldiers talk back.
It makes it hard to believe John ever thought of Dean as his son and makes it very clear why Dean never understood Sam’s confidence that Dean was the favored one.
Speeches and Apologies
Tumblr media
I considered not including this particular speech, but then I remembered that Supernatural is ALSO famous for their big emotional speeches, and this is Sam’s first, and also, Dean’s first time listening to someone he cares about give him the “I am saying goodbye because I am going kamikaze” speech and after all the drama in season 15, I guess it’s necessary to do some dissection.
It is important that despite all the things that Sam has done to Dean, the words “I’m sorry” are never uttered here.
SAM Dean...ah...I wanna thank you. DEAN For what? SAM For everything. You've always had my back you know? Even when I couldn't count on anyone I could always count on you. And ah...I don't know I just wanted to let you know, Just in case DEAN Whoa whoa whoa, are you kidding me? SAM What? DEAN Don't say just in case something happens to you. I don't wanna hear that freaking speech man. Nobody's dying tonight. Not us, not that family, nobody. Except that demon. That evil son of a bitch ain't getting any older than tonight, you understand me?
This is not a bad “freaking speech”. I understand why Dean didn’t want to hear it, because it is like jinxing the mission (And, let’s be honest, it did), but it’s not a bad speech.
Except that, reading it again, it lacks one important part. Sure, Sam thanks Dean for always being there (Forgetting that, at least three times this season alone, he has accused Dean of not having his back and being unreliable. Which will ALSO be a constant theme in the series’s long run), but he never mentions the times HE did things that would be hard to back up. Which, again, I am not counting as a bad thing against him in this precise moment in time, since he is young, in his roaring roadtrip of revenge, and we’ve only know the brothers for a year, but it is the beginning of a series’ long crutch to make us forgive all of Sam’s sins without him actually doing the work to be forgiven.
On the other hand, it all goes to waste a bit later when Sam starts hitting Dean for the horrible sin of not letting him run into a burning building and kill himself so… it’s not really a “thank you for having my back” speech but a “You better remember, you never fight me and my choices are the best” speech in hindsight. Which… not good on Sam, no.
Double narrative standards
Tumblr media
This episode is kind of balanced, except for that little moment where we’re supposed to think Dean is wrong for telling Sam that revenge is not worth their lives. So there’s not much to write in this particular segment.
Final Tally
Tumblr media
Ok, back in the saddle. And after all that, I decided not to tally Sam’s little slip about not caring if their loved ones die as long as he gets to kill Azazael. Let me know if you disagree.
The count is still not good on Sam’s side, but as always, you are free to disagree with me, and dm me if you think I missed a tally or I should change one. If your argument is solid and canon based, I will listen to it and may change the numbers.
