Shindou Yo could still recall the first time he had to stand by and watch some poor girl go home, worse for the wear after meeting Bakugou and the rest of Chaotic Neutral. Since then, he had lost count of how many crestfallen fans had taken a luxury ‘walk of shame’ back to their hotel in the leather seats of his company owned SUV. And if Shindou was going to be honest, he was sick and fucking tired of it.
Sick of standing by and watching Bakugou be the world’s most beloved rock star by day and nothing but a manwhore by night. Hell, if Kirishima wanted to be his side piece - that was fine. But these poor fangirls were none the wiser. Not that their manager was much better. Sure, he put them up in the best hotels money could buy and supplied them with enough fine food and merch to fill a second suitcase.. But that couldn’t be much more than an off-brand band-aid on a broken heart.
It made Shindou’s blood boil. And he was sure that tonight would be no different.
The dutiful bodyguard was currently fullinging his role as a driver; sitting in the front seat of the murdered-out luxury SUV that he drove more than his own car. Yo thought briefly of the car he wished he was sitting in tonight - his Dodge Charger Hellcat, that was currently locked safely in the parking garage of his condo back home. A night on the road, winding down country streets outside the city would have been preferable to biting his tongue while another unsuspecting young woman was taken for a spin by at least one member of Chaotic Neutral.
Without realizing it, his knuckles had gone white in his grip on the leather steering wheel. He loosened his stiff hands and reached for the dial on the stereo - turning up his own playlist before checking his phone to see how long he’d been waiting.
Fifteen minutes. Long enough for Deku to make his morning rounds with the band- they should be making their way down to the car any minute.
As if the universe knew today wasn’t the day to push Shindou anymore than it already intended to - the tinted glass front door of the tall, upscale Tokyo city building in front of him opened up. First, with his face down cast, intent on his phone - Midoriya Izuku. Following closely at his heels were bassist Kaminari Denki and lead guitarist, Sero Hanta. The string half of the band looked bright eyed and bushy tailed, despite the fact that Shindou was willing to bet his life savings that they had at least one wake-and-bake session before Deku had shown up.
The band manager reached the SUV first, throwing the front passenger door open and letting the harsh morning light into the car. Shindou lowered his dark sunglasses and cracked his neck reflexively- readjusting to a straighter sitting position. Deku didn’t spare him a glance, and continued scrolling aggressively through his phone, obviously looking for something.
Behind Shindou, the driver’s side rear door opened and Denki and Hanta climbed inside; large cups of frozen, sugar laced coffee tipped dangerous as the two men unceremoniously clambered back into the third row of seats.
“Watch it!” Shindou barked at them, glaring at their reflections in the rearview mirror, “I just had this thing detailed.”
Kaminari gave a snort and replied, “Yeah? And I’m sure Deku would just pay to have it cleaned again. So why are you bitchin’?”
Shinsou just rolled his eyes before turning his attention back toward the building. The automatic security doors had slid shut again with no sign of the remaining two members of the band.
Without looking up from his handheld, Midoriya started to run down the day's agenda for Shindou, as if he hadn’t already done so twice before.
Pick up the band and get them to the venue before noon.
Arrive at the hotel to pick up this evening’s special guest by two.
Briefing, form signing, and back to the venue by four.
Drinks in the VIP lounge before the show starts at six.
Shindou nodded along and uttered whatever acknowledgment would satisfy Deku as he rambled off his itinerary. Every show day played out more or less the same. The only variation on today’s events was that the band would be ending the night in a hotel closer to the airport to prepare for tomorrow’s flight to the city they would be playing next.
“And our flavor of the weekend?” Shindou inquired, unable to keep the annoyance out of his voice.
The band manager cocked an eyebrow at his driver, but chose to ignore the attitude. He knew Shindou just as well as the rest of the band, and that meant being familiar with his snark and banter. Midoriya tapped the glass of his phone a few times before selecting an app and sliding his thumb repeatedly across the surface until he found what he’d been searching for. Casually, he tossed the phone into Shindou’s lap before turning his attention to his own, still steaming, cup of coffee that had been resting in the center console.
Shindou barely caught Izuku’s phone before it disappeared between his legs. Once he had a secure grip on the device, Yo turned his attention to the image on the screen.
His breath caught in his throat at the sight of the most beautiful woman he’d ever laid eyes on.
Shindou may not have been the most superficial guy, but he could appreciate a girl who clearly took pride in her appearance. The photo itself was stunning; the girl standing in front of one of the seven wonders of the world. Clearly well traveled, he noted. Her hair was flawless, even while standing outside, and her outfit looked stylish without being high fashion or looking uncomfortable. She looked like a woman who knew what she wanted and was out to make the most of life.
His thumb swiped across the screen, hoping to see more of the girl.
Photos of her out with friends, visiting well known theme parks, drinking brightly colored drinks at novelty restaurants. Naturally, everyone puts their best face forward on social media - but Shindou was still astounded at how - regardless of the background- this woman was the true beauty in each photo.
What would a girl like that want with a pretentious boyband like Chaotic Neutral? Yo couldn’t help but wonder.
No sooner had the thought crossed his mind, than Deku was tugging the phone from his hands and he remembered. Of course, the never ending work of their behind the scenes mastermind ensured that fans only saw the band through a perfectly crafted lens.
Deku turned back to look toward the building and Shindou’s gaze followed. Bakugou Katsuki and Kirishima Eijirou had finally emerged into the afternoon sunlight - both looking like they had just finished a workout instead of recently woken up.
Bakugou led the way, his face down and a snapback hat pulled low over his eyes. Kirishima hurried along behind him holding two coffee cups and a wide, dopey grin.
Shindou’s annoyance flared and he returned his attention to the touch screen in the dashboard, making sure he had the right venue programmed into the GPS.
‘There it is,’ Shindou scoffed internally, ‘The side of Chaotic Neutral that only an exclusive VIPpass and a stack of non-disclosure forms will let you see.’

At that exact moment, a couple thousand miles away - and more than a mile above the ground, you were checking the time yet again. The minutes seemed to be passing like seconds; and on any other flight, that would have been just fine with you. But today, each passing moment was closing the gap between now and the moment you would miss out on the best night of your life.
You had been saving for the last couple of years to celebrate this milemarker birthday in your favorite part of the world; Japan. On top of that, you were lucky enough to secure the exclusive VIP meet and greet pass for your all time favorite band, Chaotic Neutral.
It wasn’t like this was your first concert, though. In fact, you had already seen them live nearly ten times; in different countries, playing with countless other bands. But this time would be different. This time, you were going to get to hang out with the band backstage after the show.
That was.. if you actually landed before the show started.
Confirming your worst fears, the attention grabbing tone of an announcement from the captain chirped through the speakers.
“Good afternoon, passengers, this is your captain speaking. Please fasten your seatbelts and move your trays into an upright position. We will be experiencing some turbulence as we approach our destination-”
A layover, where you were planning to run to your connecting flight for the second leg of your journey…
“Please check your personal itineraries as well as the arrival and departure boards when we arrive. Due to severe weather patterns, many flights are being grounded or delayed. As always, thank you for flying…”
You groaned loudly, throwing your head back against your head rest in pent-up frustration. The tiny old woman beside you looked concerned and attempted to scoot her slight frame as close to the other side of her seat as she could, shrinking in on herself even more and probably praying that you wouldn’t try to start up a venting conversation with her about the flight patterns.
Rolling your eyes at her obvious judgement, you threw your headphones back on and folded your arms, sinking deeper into your seat and staring out the window as the first rolls of turbulence jostled the plane.

I found a diary entry from 2008.
Or, several entries. They’re all jumbled together.
It was most interesting, how I believed I had any real problems at all.
If I could go back in time I’d beat the shit out of myself. For multiple reasons.
How many times have I listened to this song in two days? One hundred? Two hundred?
I don't want to be science to you.
I want to be religion.
That was just a dream. That was just a dream.
I have been sensitized beyond recognition.
The last of the sunlight bleeds orange through the cotton clouds as my thoughts become as murky as mud disturbed at the bottom of a pond. The sweet mechanical motion brings me contentment like no other action ever could. Legs pushing the pedals steadily round, my own effort playing no part. I keep my back straight, my hands grasping the rubber-clad handlebars lightly. I don't look forward, but around.
Wide-screen TVs through blinded windows, showing the world their fragmented little lines of scripted entertainment. Two cars in the driveway, a swing on the elm tree. One dangling leg brushes a clump of poppies as I ride by. Their lawn is perfectly manicured and green, not the defeated yellow one would expect in such heat. Soft, identical satin blades. I make them up in my head, pretty and smiling, toting their children, one on each hip and two drifting about their calves, clutching at their parents, virtual deities.
The glowing ember is low in the sky now, obscured by the leaves of the birch and cypress trees. A hummingbird catches my eye and I swerve in the road, contemplating the quintessence of distraction. How it moves without moving; its tiny black eyes, its invisible beating wings. I follow it up into the sky until it disappears into the top of a cypress.
I am circling the driveway. I am staring at the door. I never want to stop. Not this mechanical self-defense. But I know I have to go. And I go.
Dreams...superficial places and replaceable faces...
My body is riddled with lines like a puzzle someone just put back together after being broken up for so long.
That fabric dug into my skin as I changed positions again and again within that twelve hour time frame.
My stomach aches. There is no food here. There is no temperature. This carbonated salt water finds its way past my lips into an empty body.
Rising from my cotton coffin the blood rushes much too quickly; no, I am spinning, I am falling, swaying on my feet, the world is growing darker before my half-lidded eyes as the exhaustion overtakes me like a predator does pray and I swoon inelegantly on the dusty carpet, a weak smile splayed across my lips.
The clock has stopped.
Blood from a stone
I'm longing for any sort of constant. Dying for some consistency.
Day to day...blissful, independent, and on the mend...falling back down into that dark spiral of depression and loneliness and cynicism and self-destruction...try, cry, why try? Why bother to hope that my mood will stay stable? Because it hasn't...because it won't. Because I'm a mess at best...a quiet one, a mess that can distract herself and attempt to wrap those happy moments around her, but a mess all the same. And at worst...why venture down that road? Why even ask that question? Because I don't want to know the answer, or because I already do?
(What is this? WHAT IS THIS?)
I left the oasis in the desert because the water made me sick but now I'm dying of thirst anyways.
A mouthful of sand and two empty hands.
But I suppose the sea is a more widely-used metaphor than I previously imagined.
I have no poetry, no real prose, no pretty words to explain this sensation.
The idea of human suffering in all its rawness, its poignancy. Leaving the strongest limp and languid, vulnerable in the fog of their pain.
I wait for something concrete. No longer an idea, but a promise. Perhaps I really am there and not here at all. My toes curling around the gap in the wooden planks, my hair blown by the salty wind. A blot of red against the bright blue of the sun-stricken sky. The weight of the last three months presses me uncomfortably against the railing. It isn't that it's too difficult to remember, it's just too surreal.
Are we really here, together? Are you still sharing this pier with me?
The whirlwind of passion and confusion. The fear, the doubt. September was the worst, I think. I recall the revolving door metaphor. The silent, aching distance. Too many elephants in the living room. That sorrow climaxed, too.
I scarcely believed that my someday would come so soon, but as the past has demonstrated, a lot can change in a surprisingly short amount of time.
I've had this song on repeat. You said it hits you wrong sometimes, and I empathize. I think of when we first began to talk. Real conversation. You still felt that way. Remembering the pain you were in makes me wish I could erase it all. But -
"Now I have you, and I cannot imagine a better trade."
That means a lot to me.
But even if I was left to stare into the breaking tide, even if I became a lonely shadow in front of the dissolving sun, cold and dark beneath the pale moon, I would scan the shore for your familiar silhouette. I have not left, I will not leave. You will never have to hide your face. Don't take your eyes off of me, I am something constant.
Oh, wistful summer reflections. Those bittersweet nights were endless.
Why do I try
To open a book whose only resolve is to stay firmly shut?
Done, done with thinking, with feeling, with trying, with hearing, "Hey, you fucked up too" from other people - thanks, I know that already, and I don't want to talk about it, and I don't want to hear about it, I just want to stare at the wall and be a vegetable. Honestly. My mind is numb. My mind is gone.
And yeah, I don't deserve much, I don't deserve what I have or could've had, and I make things up, I imagine, I twist and maim and destroy, and fine, compare me, contrast me, analyze me and tell me everything, because I don't care about myself. I know I'm not even half as good as I thought I was and I'm just trying to get through the day without hurting myself.
"And I played the fucking villain, just like you wanted." - Girl Interrupted
Except there's no villain here. Just two victims.
The worst part of my day, walking away from you.
Today was a blur. Having to stop in the hallways simply to prevent unconsciousness. Little food (fiber one bar, cracker, rice cake), little sleep. Exhaustion settled comfortably on me. Too tired to feel any real emotion. That changed later, though.
What shall we use to fill the empty spaces?
I'm trying desperately to make myself care about things. Schoolwork, eating, cleaning, exercise. It isn't working out as well as I'd hoped.
I try to smile. Sometimes it happens. My mood is a pendulum. Back and forth, back and forth. Seeing pairs and not being part of one...
Quite honestly, my life has almost completely fallen apart.
(Why does it seem as though everyone's has?)
There is only one thing holding mine together...and I'm counting on that not to unravel.
Ouch, ouch, ouch... how my selfish heart hurts, each beat asking, "When?"
Oh. You. You don't deserve a thing.
“Stand at the end of my pier?"
"I will never turn away."
"And I will never let go."
Parts of my landscape that pull my idle mind like the tide. Thoughts that come and go without evocation. Memories.
Held in the grasp of Sam Beam, City and Colour, Dirty Vegas, notes stretching into the early morning, songs soaked with tears and meaning, a playlist I made for this very ache.
A puzzle left incomplete.
Pieces separated to make two different pictures.
I long to wist the day when our picture is whole, our beautiful portrait of unity.
The oil to my canvas, the colour with which my meaning is painted. A purpose beyond the typical monochromatic. I am spirited and bright in your love.
I love you with my body, with my mind, with my soul. Blood rushes at the sight of your smile and your laugh is beautiful to behold, a privilege to hear... how I long for my own to twine with yours, wonderful simplicity left untangled by words, emotion made of warm virginity.
I'll be standing at the end of this pier for you even if my first wrinkles appear before your gentle touch.
I will never turn away. You will never let go.
And we are caught in mutual agony, spinning in oblivion, falling in the dark velvet of abyss, together, apart, wish you were here, oh two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl (year after year?), come back to me, look after me, days go by and still I think of you - days when I couldn't live my life without you.
I must've done something right to deserve you in my life.
"Come down now", but we'll stay.
Now comes September, the transitional month. The days grow shorter and cooler and the nights are rich with autumn dark. My afternoons are filled with hope. I can't always decipher every twitch of the mouth, every lingering stare, every thought etched in to the furrow of your brow. I try...I do. Know that I try. Not just for that, but for everything.
Last night the blood ran down my calf in thick, crooked streaks, staining the green plush of the carpet. The rush of water from the bath hurried the colour down onto the cotton. My head was full, my eyes were swimming in red, and the stinging pain brought me to my final calm.
The wind pinched the hours together and my skin was lined with the weight of my thoughts. The day like a leaden yolk on my back. My shadow doesn't sway anymore.
Minutes are spent in nothing but quiet contemplation, a haze of hope and fantasy. Figures waltzing to my mental adagio. I wait for the world to spin beneath my fingertips. I wait for the moon to wax and wane with the flow of our conversation. I wait for the sun to shine on discourse, on connection and on love. I orbit a more expansive dream.
His guitar has that familiar ring to it and the light falls gracefully through my sleeves. Pull the lasso now and just let me live for today.
It seems there are only two instances in which people are equal: when they are crying and when they are asleep.
Both make us extremely vulnerable, you see.
I plan to do one right after the other, and perhaps reverse the order at an earlier hour.
Minutes like leaves, dropping away to dust the grass with their curling forms. I wait again for spring.
light slithered through the blinds, softest shadows of early fall striping my body. The bath water was draining away and I sat with my knees pressed to my chest, staring numbly at the wall and mindlessly mumbling bits of lyrics. There was nothing in the room, nothing in the air. Nothing in my mind but the words I'd heard repeated over six hundred times before.
I pushed the pained longing away and curled up into a ball on the green rubber bath mat. An expression of defeat or meditation...? It does not matter because I'll never know. Summer took all the fight out of my eyes. The war is quiet now, internal; comprised of trench-wandering, cryptograms and grainy photographs of the things I couldn't rescue from those long, burning months.
was always ours. I can't explain it but it's there. You helped me build the soundtrack to my life without realizing what it would turn into. Now every time I hear this riff my mind slides not back to what was but to what is and the impact summer had.
Dreams of pianos and silence and shiny mahogany floors. I sit on the black top of it, my feet dangling above my own brown reflection. The light and ghostly feel of your caress...no weight to it but it's there all the same. Your mouth moves and I hear the words in my mind only to forget them upon waking. It's familiar and new at the same time. This happened once before and I see it begin again. My hair dusts the glossy black of the piano, an anonymous key ringing out in the gray afternoon. The air is pierced only with my consciousness.
I wake up and curl my arms around my pillow, longing for a different hour, a different day. The morning is still, silent, whole in my vision. My eyes slide closed once more and I keep the image within reach. Thirty more minutes before the alarm disturbs my reverie.
I'm always crawling back toward the same sorts of things: memories, dreams and fantasies. Pacifiers.
I don't want to sleep alone.
He greets me with a polite smile, miscalculating my facial expression as one of physical exhaustion. I let my bag drop to the dirty sidewalk. We speak of nothing, hear nothing from each other and keep our thoughts as cloistered as stone temples. The people are not there to me; they rarely ever are. I live in the sky, in the trees, in far away cities of daydreams and reverie. His murmur and laugh neither touch me nor prompt me to disclose my own honest emotion.
I sigh, scraping my sandal against the loose gravel. There are other people now. My face aches from pretense, my back from the weight of spoken words, and my insides from the wounds of words left unspoken. I appear to pay attention to the conversation, but I am mute and mindless in the way of social engagement. The weariness penetrates and surpasses my body, reaching deep to clutch my bones with powerful persuasion.
I feel it take me, I feel it hold me, and still I coax myself into illusion with the last bit of fortitude I can muster.
I'm the one in the dark room, and there are only empty chairs.
Homework doesn't lie. I'm writing question marks where there should be periods. Freudian? Probably.
The words don't want to form.
Pencil twitches in the clutch of a distracted hand, useless and heavy.
I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs.
I've seen a palace in London, I've seen a castle in Wales, but I'd rather wake up beside you and breathe that old familiar smell. Days go by. I've never been more exhausted. Closing my eyes everywhere, to everything. Fill the gaps with candlelight and stitch my life back together. How I wish, how I wish. Aching gums, split with incoming wisdom teeth. I am too big to fit here, too big to fit there, too big to fit anywhere. Drop your gaze, for I cannot return it without feeling some sort of hellfire burst forth through my chest at the sight of your listlessness. Gone for the weekend. The latest day approaches. Tell me it's getting better, because it can't go back to getting worse. It's too empty, too quiet here, the bed suddenly too big for only me. Heat smothers the valley like a dirty blanket, coating my throat in smog and mold. I'm so exhausted. Hushed reciprocation is the only thing that makes sense. Wax melting on the glass, measuring the time that has passed. Silence and thought. Exhausted. I need everyone.
Made of honey and thorns.
What am I if not able to release the nylon ice that has settled beneath my skin, a cold layer between my soul and the world I reach out to touch?
And what am I if not completely transparent, heart beating in front of the eyes of anyone who cares to look?
There is but one reason I regret summer ending so soon. Just one. I stepped out of the dream. Not willingly, really. I would've given anything to stay where I was, but...not yet. Not yet.
Dabbling, one foot in the door of acceptance, the other submersed in the warmth of moments past. I'm still trying to wrap my head around how quickly time went by.
June - Days spent wallowing in uncertainty, pain and poison, gazing into painted skies with the eyes of a growing child. Tears ran with films as the story wrote itself. Fire burned brightly.
July - New things. A bridge built. Self-loathing born of heavy silence stole the warmth from summer days. Carried back to my bed, but just barely.
August - Restoration. Age, and retrospect that widens disillusioned eyes. A thirst for both change and consistency. A renewed sense of independence. Tentative faith. Superego overrules id. Back to life - and how I missed it.
Tell me time will fix things, that these questions are silly, that I am over-analytical, that I am too emotional to trust myself, that this confusion will subside, that things will fall into their proper place, that class will be challenging, that sleep will come easy, that dreams will be sweet, that meaning will bleed from every aspect of my life, that distance will close itself, that cold will thaw and turn to warmth, that winter will bring back the fire summer has sent away, that work will be worth it, that waiting was for something legendary, that I am important enough for things to change, that you will hold my hand even if the ice begins to crack beneath our feet, that we will slip back into old intimate roles like frayed but much-loved tunics, that spring will not fade, that a story will be written, that wounds will be closed, that religion will not be lost, that flame will not be suffocated, that end will not begin.
Chapter 4 - The Rise of Craven
I let the door of the bar swing shut, leaving Andrew and Ifan to find a table whilst ensuring that they complied with local social distancing rules. I followed their movement as the door closed, peering in through the small window. It was almost like an old Wild West saloon, with a small circular window on a door that swung both inward and outwards. As it came to a rest I took a step closer and watched as they took a seat in the rear corner of the bar, close to where local band Cry Wolf were just putting down their instruments after finishing a sound check.
I snuck around the side of the building and into an alley, the sound of broken glass cracking under my feet accompanying my journey. I pushed a food bin against the wall, the scraping of metal on concrete reverberating around the alley, and climbed on top to look through the window.
The window looked directly into the kitchen, but through the serving hatch I had a good enough view of what I needed to see in the bar. I glanced down at the two chefs busily preparing Michelin star pub food below, but they appeared to be too preoccupied in what they were doing to notice me. The window was slightly ajar and smells from the kitchen wafted through the opening. The rich odour of chili sauce. Green peppers. Onions. Melted cheddar. The distinct aroma of laboratory generated soya based burgers frying on the grill.
The chefs continued in their preparation. But it was the two visitors at the table closest to the kitchen that drew my attention. I adjusted my position so that I stood to one side of the window, limiting the chances of being spotted. I had only a slight view of Andrew’s but it would be enough to tell me how the conversation was going.
Andrew and Ifan sat in silence for what felt like a long time. Too long in fact. Balancing precariously on the bin in an unnatural position was starting to become uncomfortable. I felt the first traces of cramp in my calf and tried to bury the thought.
Just as I started to feel like this was a waste of time, the conversation burst into life. I watched as Andrew and Ifan drew closer. Frosty at first, but as they warmed up their body language changed and they became notably more comfortable in each other’s presence. Ifan brought some maps out of his bag and started pointing at different places, Andrew engaged with what he was telling him. Then as Ifan knocked Andrew’s food on the floor and proceeded to pick it up, and lick it before handing it back, I knew that I had seen all that I needed to see.
Having waffled enough to eat up some words in this chapter, I jumped down from the bin and started making my way to the hostel that had housed us for the last six weeks whilst we had hunted down Andrew in the Gerudo area. I smiled to myself. This was all going exactly to plan.
The plan that had laid out four years ago. Approximately. Depending on how bad your maths was.
In celebration, I allowed my mind to wander back to that moment. Camp II on K2. Just over 20,000 feet above sea level. It had actually felt like being at sea level, due to the amount of time that we had spent at altitude. Nearly three years close to the death zone in thick syrupy air. 20,000 feet had been liberating. Like a man escaping a building on fire, drawing deep lungs of cool air to replace the smoke.
We had been on the hunt for Craven for years. Never far from him, but always at a safe distance. Like a skilled heavyweight boxer, he had been able to keep us at bay with a long jab, constantly pawing at us, never allowing us to get on the inside and turn it into a scrap.
Except from my side it had all been an act. I had stood by for two years, pretending to be helping, but in actual fact I was just keeping tabs on Ifan and ensuring that he never got too close. But just as I thought that he was beginning to give up, that the towel was about to be thrown in from the corner, Ifan cracked the code. And it threatened to expose the whole masterplan.
As we were packing our kit into the back of his C-Max for the drive back down to base camp, Ifan had told of his intention to check one last time for the mythical Craven tunnel, the sixth route that as yet he had failed to locate. He wanted to check once last time higher up on the mountain, he had worked something out. Or he had had a premonition. Or something.
In that moment I knew that I had to do something. Panic flared. He was too close. He risked destroying everything.
I had said to him, “there’s a meteorite that hit the ground near here. I want to check it out. It won’t take long.”
“Okay, I’ll finish packing up. Be careful, kid.”
As his back was turned I quickly ran up to the bottleneck just below the summit. Glancing back to check that his attention was still on strapping the surfboards to the roof of the car, I pulled the serac to one side and disappeared into the dark tunnel that lay beyond.
The serac door closed with a bang, dislodging some ice particles that hurtled down the face of the bottleneck, taking some climbers with it. This had never happened in a Vertical Summit story before.
I stood in total darkness, the sound of the falling ice receding. Suddenly lights flared, the contrast to the darkness a moment ago instantly blinding me. As my eyes adjusted to the light, I took note of my surroundings. I had never been here before, but had heard the stories.
I was in a narrow circular tunnel, maybe fifty meters long. It was lined with metal plating in an elongated form, the lights that had momentarily blinded me shining between the gaps. A grate blocking my entrance stood at the far end. I stooped down slightly to avoid hitting my head on the ceiling, though truthfully this was just one of those unnecessary instinctive actions as there were a few inches clearance above me. But somehow it felt safer to crouch, like I was prepared for the unexpected.
I made my way along the corridor, and started to become aware of slow, deep, mechanical breathing, as if someone was using scuba equipment except above water, the rhythmic noise becoming exaggerated as it echoed through the tunnel. As I reached the end, the metal grate quickly shot up.
I drew a breath and walked through the entrance into a large cavernous room, carved out of the rock of K2. The room was dark compared the tunnel that I had been in, and I once again had to allow my eyes to adjust. Low lighting illuminated each corner of the room. In the centre a man was sitting in a circular open chamber, his back to me, the rise and fall of his shoulders coinciding with the mechanical breathing.
I could only see the back of his head, which I couldn’t bring myself to focus on entirely. No matter how many times I saw it, the burn scarring that covered a majority of his upper torso and head never failed to make me feel slightly ill. Ashamed even. He wore a mask, breathing in bottled oxygen to combat the altitude. It was this that was seemingly generating the loud breathing sound.
Another mechanical sound, louder than the breathing, suddenly drew my attention, as a robotic arm came down from the ceiling and placed a climbing balaclava on the man’s head. There was a sudden draw of air as the item was sealed in place, steam and other gases escaping from around the rim.
Sir Henry Craven slowly rose and faced me.
“Hello, father,” I managed to say, words not coming easily. Like sorry.
“So, you have accepted the truth.”
“I have accepted the truth that you were once John Craven, television presenter and my father.”
“That name no longer has any meaning for me.”
“It is the name of your true self, you have just forgotten.” I turned and leaned against a railing, looking out across the jungles of Endor. “That is why you couldn’t destroy me on Kangleong. And that is why you won’t bring yourself to destroy me now.”
Craven approached me. I instinctively took a step backwards, moving towards the exit. He was an imposing physical presence, towering six inches over me, dressed completely in a black Rab downsuit, black gloves, black mountaineering boots. A black scarf that looked like a cape hung down to his calves. Red rimmed yellow eyes shone through the gaps in the balaclava.
“Adam,” he started, pointing a gloved finger at me, “you do not yet realise your importance in this plan. But I am wondering, why are you here? The agreement was that you would not contact me unless there was danger.”
“There is danger,” I responded. “Ifan is getting close. Something needs to be done.”
“You were supposed to deal with this annoyance.”
“He is stronger in ways that you cannot imagine. Search your feelings, you know it to be true.”
“He is of no concern to me, he’s as clumsy as he is stupid.”
I could not argue with that.
With that, he turned and walked out of the room that we stood, down another tunnel on the opposite side of the room to the one that I had entered. I had to run to catch up to him, my pace not dropping much as I tried to match his, his long strides powering him down the corridor at a rapid speed. I now knew how Ifan felt on any ES&CASG climb.
We entered another chamber, this one much larger than the previous. In the centre was a huge mechanical device that was in the process of being constructed. Twenty men in white plastic suits busily assembled parts of the machine, handing each other metal parts and tools.
“What a piece of junk!” I exclaimed.
Craven turned to me, anger in his eyes. “Do you have any idea what this is?”
I shook my head.
“This is the greatest weapon that has ever been constructed. One thousand times more powerful than an atom bomb. Capable of reducing eight thousand meter peaks to rubble in seconds. And I built it here in K2.”
“What are you talking about?”
“These mountain tunnels that you have been tracking, what did you think that they were for?”
“No. This baby runs on plutonium so we had to steal it from some Libyans and smuggle it in, but the tunnels were designed to make up a sophisticated network that will allow me to send targeted blasts throughout the Himalayas, flattening the entire mountain range. Then, when I am finished, the weapon will detonate and K2 will burn to the ground also. Soon, the Himalayas will be a thing of the past, and so will high altitude mountain climbing.”
I shook my head. None of this made sense. “Why are you doing this? Why destroy mountains? You’d kill off mountaineering.”
“That is entirely the point,” Craven explained. “Every season that passes, more and more people travel to this part of the world and make a mockery of what I, what we, have achieved in our careers. They devalue it. People who pay sixty thousand dollars to stand in a queue and get carried to the top of Everest, then post on social media about how great they are.
“I will put a stop to this once and for all, starting with Kangleong. Imagine, with that gone, only you and I will stand as the people who climbed that mountain. We can rule the history books, as father and son.”
“But this means…” I began, before being cut off.
“Yes, with Kangleong gone, you will be forced to write about another mountain in Vertical Summit 2.”
“My god,” was all I could manage, suddenly feeling sick at the prospect. I didn’t know any other Kangs on which I could base another name.
I felt torn. I partly agreed with Craven that mountaineering had become too commercialised and generally ruined by the Koreans, the disaster on Kangleong in 2013 being a prime example, and one that still hurt me to think about to this day. But surely there were better ways to deal with the problem than this.
But I had to follow the orders and wishes of my father. Disappointment filled me as I considered the fact that I had not been a part of these plans, but instead on babysitting duty for the last few years. I considered why he was suddenly revealing all this to me.
“But what does this have to do with me?” I finally asked.
“Andrew. You will bring him to me.”
“What? Why does this need Andrew?”
“Andrew is paramount for this plan to work. The prophecy has predicted this. He is the chosen one.”
“I still don’t follow.”
“You don’t need to follow, you just need to bring him to me. It will be revealed in future chapters, assuming that Andrew doesn’t kill off this story thread also.”
I considered this for a minute, desperately searching for a way out of this situation.
“Okay, but Andrew has been missing – hang on, let me work this out – about five years? I am never going to be able to find him.”
“I find your lack of faith disturbing. You will find him and bring him to me.”
“But this… this wasn’t the deal. The deal was that I was to track Ifan.”
“I am altering the deal. Pray, I don’t alter it any further.” He took a step closer. “Unless you think I am being unfair?”
I hoped that he couldn’t see the look of fear that flashed across my face.
“No,” was all I could manage, words not coming easily once again. Like forgive me.
Craven explained the rest of the plan. It would take some years to finish construction, during which time I should track down Andrew. The destruction of Kangleong would signify the opening bell to the start of the process. I was to take Andrew to The Dago Bar in Gerudo Town, and there I would get further instructions on the next step.
“Don’t fail me again,” he instructed. I turned to leave.
“One more thing,” Craven continued. “You will need to think of a suitable story to convince Andrew to join you. He must not know what is happening. Maybe something to do with time travel?”
I considered this for a moment. That could have been a great idea for this story.
“And Adam,” Craven said, bowing to me slighty. “In Rab we trust.”
“In Rab we trust, father.”
I had staggered down the tunnel, my head spinning. Disorientated. Could I find Andrew? Could I deliver him to Craven? And what about Ifan, would he take the side of Andrew or would he ultimately succumb to the dark side also? Would he have any opinions? Was Catherine Park right all those years ago?
I opened the serac door and stepped out in the cold air of the Karakorum Mountains, sliding down the steep slope to the start of the bottleneck below. But I realised my mistake immediately.
I hadn’t closed the serac properly. It caught in the wind and slammed shut, dislodging ice that hurtled down the bottleneck. I adopted the ‘don’t move’ technique that was successful against the T Rex in Jurassic Park, but it was of no use. I didn’t see the brick sized ice block that hit me in the head. I barely felt it, the adrenaline was pumping so hard. I had the sense of falling backwards down the slopes of K2, the sense of hurtling towards oblivion…
The blast of a car horn brought me back to the present. In my daydreaming I had nearly stepped out into a busy road in the centre of Gerudo Town. Thoughts of the events from four years ago vanished instantly as I stood impatiently waiting for a gap in the traffic. I became aware of the weight on my back. In something of a fugue state it appeared that I had already been back to the hostel and packed up both mine and Ifan’s anti-aging creams and moisturiser. This was good as I couldn’t be bothered to write this part of the story anyway.
I made a dash across the road, my once powerful sprinting fast twitch muscles failing me in my old age, as I waddled across in a stiff manner. Surprisingly, I made it across uninjured but knew that I would pay for the exertion the next day.
I made my way through the centre of Gerudo Town, arriving back at The Dago Bar. This time I burst in through the doors, and approached Andrew and Ifan at the back of the bar. They stopped talking mid-sentence, an uneasy feeling settling over the table, as if they had been discussing me when I walked in. I considered this for a minute. Turning up after four years claiming to have been back from the future would probably make me the centre of discussions.
As Ifan and Andrew continued to look nervously at each other, I broke the ice.
“Where’s mine?” I asked, nodding at the beer that stood on the table.
Chapter 13: Thinking of You
Putting your phone down on the wooden table, you groan in frustration. The piling paperwork and dating life are two different things but are both giving you too much stress. A lot of friends and colleagues had adviced you to stay single and focus on work, but Yaku is right.
You’re meeting all these people just to forget that you met him.
Kita was far from your ideal type. He wasn’t tall. He wasn’t rich. He didn’t give you expesive gifts every day. But he still managed to make you think that he’s the perfect man.
No matter how hard you try not you, you still compare every guy you’ve dated to Kita. He set the bars so high, that even you can’t see the top of it.
You are so desperate to forget Kita that you started dating all these boys and thought that maybe one of them can make you forget him. Relationships only lasted for a day or the most is a week. You’re getting a bad name in industry, but you don’t care.
“Hi, I’m (L/N) (F/N). Nice to meet you.” You introduce yourself to the pilot as you sit on the dinner table he reserved. You take in his appearance and he’s a 10/10. He has blonde hair and golden eyes, and very long lashes. He has wide shoulders and even under his suit, you can tell that he’s well-built.
“Kise,” he answers, flashing a smile your way.
‘One of those charmers...’ You think as you check him out once again. You’re looking through the menu when the man in front of you clears his throat uncomfortably, catching your attention. “If you don’t want to continue this day, just say so.”
“It’s not that. I just don’t feel comfortable acting fancy and all that,” Kise remarks, loosening the tie around his collar.
“Then let’s go somewhere else,” you tell him reassuringly. The waitress waiting for your orders stand their awkwardly, witnessing how the restaurant will lose a customer just like that. “Miss, order anything you want in this menu. I’ll pay for it.”
“Ah, it’s okay,” the waitress stutters, taking the menu from you and Kise.
“I insist,” you tell her before standing up from your seat. After paying for the waitress’s meal, you and Kise head to his car. He attempts to help you put it on but you do it before he can. “So where do you wanna go?”
Kise looks out of his window shyly before giving you an answer. “I wanted to cook for you...”
“Okay, then bring me to your house?” You chuckle, trying to lighten the mood. The tense that was all over your date’s finally disappears as he brightly smiles at you.
“You’re kinder than from I’ve heard,” he confesses and starts the engine of his car. “I have this recipe I learned from a great friend...”
Kise rambles on about the most random things until you two reach the parking lot of his apartment. Just like he said, he cooked for you. You sit at the dining table as you wait for him to finish cooking. Staring at him from the angle, you remember Kita teaching you how to cook rice.
“How many cups of rice do I need?” You asked him, staring at the sack of rice once again. Kita scooped two cups of rice then put it at the pot.
“After that, you clean the rice by soaking it in water at least twice,” Kita instructed, putting two fingers up. You nodded, following through. “Then you strain the dirty water out. After that use your finger to measure the water. It has to reach the second line on your finger.”
Kita took your hand and dipped your finger in the water. You blushed furiously, containing your squeals from the sudden contact with your crush. After going through the whole process, he made you repeat his steps in making rice.
“And that’s how you cook rice.”
“Hey, (Y/N), it’s time to eat.” Kise shakes his hand in front of your face so you go back to your senses. You nod at him with an sorry smile then start eating. “Does it taste good?”
“It’s spicy,” you tell Kise softly. He stops eating and grabs milk from his refrigerator.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know. But do you like the taste?” Kise asks you, and you just nod.
“Tell me if you want to adjust any taste or something,” Kita said after you took a bite of the meal. It was your first breakfast together and the first time he cooked for you since Osamu prepared food the night before.
“It tastes good but I don’t really like spicy food,” you answered, taking a sip of water from your glass due to the spiciness of the dish. Kita noticed the discomfort in your face so he stood up and went back to the kitchen to make a new dish for you. “It’s okay. I can take the spice.”
“No. I want you to eat to your heart’s content,” Kita stated, causing you to smile. “If you’re craving for anything, tell me okay?”
“So how’s work?” Kise changes the topic.
You sigh from the spiciness, but continue to eat anyways, not wanting to waste the blonde’s efforts. “It’s tiring, but it’s bearable.”
“Work is hard nowadays,” Kise complains back. “I wish to take a break sometimes, but then I can’t.”
“Why not?” You continue to ask, seeking for an answer that will determine if you like him or not.
“Because I need money to take you out in our future dates,” he answers mischievously, causing you to raise an eyebrow at him. “Though I’m not really enjoying my job-”
You cut him off midsentence. “Then why did you become a pilot?”
“Because it earns a lot of money is looked up to by anymore.”
“Babe...” You called the grey haired man as you laid on the back of his truck. You went with him and Rice to the farm since you didn’t have anything to do. “Atsumu told me you the top university offered you scholarship to college, why didn’t you take it?”
“Because I want to be a farmer,” Kita simply answered. He took the towel hanging around Rice’s neck and wiped the back of his neck using it. Sitting up from your position, you continued to ask him questions.
“No particular reason. I just enjoy it and it helps other people,” Kita replied to you. You put on the spare boots that lying on the corner of the trunk and went over to him. “Do you want to help?”
“Yes, since I want to learn about the things that make you happy,” you told him confidently and he just let out a soft chuckle.
“Then maybe I should learn how to vlog, too.”
Your date with Kise goes on. The two of you finished dinner so he takes out a bottle of white wine. After several of glasses, Kise scoots close to you.
“(Y/N), I know it’s just our first date, but I really like you,” Kise confesses, scooting close to you. Scoffing, you face him. “I’m serious.”
Kise leans in you and allow him to close the gap between the two of you, his lips colliding with yours.
It was your first breakfast as a couple and being the romantic person that you are, you woke up before him to make him lunch. Rice lied down the kitchen floor, confused on why it’s you cooking and not his father. You gave him his food before going back to making your boyfriend’s lunch.
“You’re just grilling a sausage, don’t fail this,” you muttered to yourself as you roll the said sausage on the pan with so much concentration. You felt arms wrap around you so you flinched in shock, almost dropping the ladle you were holding.
“Good morning,” Kita chuckled, placing his chin on your shoulder. “I should have asked you out the moment you got here if I knew that I would not make breakfast every morning.”
“Good morning, baby,” you giggled, turning off the stove to face him. “How was your sleep?”
“It was not that great since I didn’t see you when I woke up,” Kita answered, causing you to snort. “What?”
“You’ve become cheesy,” you stuck your tongue out, teasingly. Kita quickly moved his body forward, taking your tongue in his mouth. You pushed him away, gasping then laughing. “Babe, what!”
Kita let out a laugh, pulling your body closer again. He leaned his forehead on yours, his grip on your hips tightening. He’s staring at your eyes intensely but lovingly. “If you keep staring at me like that I might think you’re in love with me,” you joke.
Kita just smiled at you then pulled you in for a kiss. You placed your arms on shoulders, letting him kiss you deeper. His lips were soft but moved roughly. His hold was secure but dangerous. He was gentle with you but he was had a strong aura. He made you smile with his pure intentions, and made you moan with his sensual touches. He made you squeal like it was your first time to be in love, but he could also make you cry as if it’s your last time to experience love.
Kita was the best of both worlds. He was the calming moon, and the blazing sun. He was the cold night, and the warming morning. He was the sunrise that said hello, and the sunset that told you good bye.
You were in an axis. You have witnessed all the different planets and met all these people, to try to run away from him. But wherever you travel, you still see him. Maybe because he was not only both worlds, but rather the whole universe.
You are stuck in his axis. You’re sure of it, because even if someone else is holding you, your body craves for his touch. Though someone else is kissing you, your lips want to feel Kita’s. Someone else is making you smile, but only because you remember your happy moments with Kita. No matter who you’re with, you’re only thinking of him.
You push Kise away, thoughts about Kita flooding in your mind. “I’m sorry. I can’t do this.”
“Was I moving too fast?” Kise awkwardly asks, moving away from you.
“It’s not that,” you tell him, thinking of a reason to get out of the situation. Kise then giggles, scratching the back of his neck, so your attention goes to him.
“Is it someone then?” Kise questions, tilting his head to the side. You lower head, nodding shyly and gripping on the hem of your skirt. “That’s hard. Care to share? It looks like a serious case of not being able to move on.”
You chuckle at his statement. “I guess it is since we didn’t have proper closure.”
“Now, that’s complicated,” Kise hums as if he had not kissed you just minutes ago. “But it seems like you don’t seek closure.”
“Do I look like someone who’ll not be able to move on for years?” You sigh and Kise shakes his head.
“You look like you want to get back with him.”
An hour or two of just talking about your exes, you finally say goodbye to Kise. You feel in ease after talking to someone about your situation. Admitting that you are still into Kita is painful but you needed to let it out.
You head to Alisa’s house, where you dropped Rice off. You talk about your date for a while before you head back home. Your driver picks you up just outside Alisa’s apartment. Rice settles on your lap, comfortably sleeping. And then your heart sinks thinking about your dog.
Rice has changed his job from running in the fields to carry Kita’s towel to walking around the office to get paperwork for you. He’s a hardworking dog whose happiness comes from your smile.
Rice works hard. He has a schedule he follows like its a ritual. He’s caring. He’s smaller from other dogs but his dominance shows. He’s loyal to you. He loves you more than anyone in this word.
Rice is your little Kita.
Aside from you and Kita, Rice had a hard time coping up with your separation. The first month, Rice wasn’t able to eat properly since he missed Kita. You thought that a year would make him forget about Kita, but no.
Rice grabs a random towel every morning then head to the front door, a habit he picked up from going with Kita to the farm almost every day. He waits for Kita at the door every night. Every time you go for a drive and pass by a field, he barks and wags his tail excitedly.
It was painful to watch Rice long for Kita. Because unlike you who can speak and let your emotions out, Rice can’t. All he can do is do the same thing over and over again every day and night, until Kita finally shows up at the door. You both are.
“Do you miss your dad?” You ask Rice and he sits up excitedly. He stands on his back legs and his front paws are on your chest, giving you kisses all over your face. “I miss him, too.” As Rice whimpers from the word dad, an idea comes into your mind.
You know you’ll regret the idea, maybe you’ll even hate yourself for it, but you’ve already risked enough for Kita. So just go all the way. Take that fall. How much damage can be done?
“Head to the airport,” you say to your driver. He looks at you questionably but follows your order anyways. You call your secretary and tell her to book a flight going to Kobe and send a copy of Rice’s papers to travel.
As you arrive at the airport, the staff of the airline company you booked in assisted you and Rice to the plane. You turn your phone off, not wanting to receive any messages or calls from anyone. Checking the time, you realize it’s already 10PM, so you’ll be arriving at Kita’s house around 1AM.
You don’t care. You’ll wake him up. Kita needs to hear what you’ve been wanting to tell him for a year.
The flight to Kobe is fast, considering that you fell asleep in the plane due to the alcohol you drank prior to this sudden flight. Rice is dead asleep in his carrier. You take a cab going to Kita’s far. Your heart is pounding way too hard that you can feel your brain vibrating. You want to back out but you’re already too late. The driver has dropped you off the familiar house.
Rice barks at the door, thrilled to be home. You stand there for 10 minutes with still no response. Finally, you hear footsteps coming to the front door. The door finally slides open, revealing the man you’ve been longing for the most.
“(Y/N)?” Kita asks in confusion. Rice jumps to him, and Kita picks him up excitedly but unsurely. “I thought I was hearing things. Why are you here? At 1AM?”
“I was thinking of you.”
“No. Let me finish. I’m not sure if you still like me or not, or if you’re dating someone. But I want you to know that I have forgiven you from the whole Ayako incident. I don’t care anymore about what happened to two of you that day. I also don’t mind if you didn’t have feelings for me that time. But I just want to say that I loved you from the moment I saw you in that video. Maybe I still love you until now. And I’ve been thinking of you every day, every moment ever since I met you. I love you so bad that if you ask me to marry you right now, I would. But I know you wouldn’t so it’s okay. I’m willing to give you my whole life. But I’m not asking you to like me back again or-” you ramble, your mind not even thinking of the words that’s coming out of your mouth.
“(Y/N).” Kita stops you, his voice sounding serious.
“Yes?” You’re preparing yourself to be rejected. You have been expecting it since you decided to book a flight going to him. But at least you’ve told him everything you wanted. You can live in peace, knowing that you have nothing left to regret.
“Can we sleep first?” Kita deadpans and your heart flutters, instead of hurting. He’s still the same person you fell in love with, the same man who broke your heart and changed your whole life.
“Yeah. Sorry,” you apologize, unsure of what to do next. “I’ll call a cab. Sorry for disturbing you. I won’t bother you ever again. I’ll take my leave.”
“No. No. You sleep here.” His words came out as an order, not a suggestion, so you just agree.
“Really? I feel guilty for showing up at 1AM. I really don’t mind leaving,” you try to argue, but Kita takes your hand and brings you inside. You then notice that Rice is already inside of the house, his eyes begging you to go sleep.
“Yeah, you should stay here. We have a wedding to plan tomorrow after all.”

“Relax, you're gonna be just fine.” Dean said soothingly as he stood in the doorway of your small apartment bathroom, watching you fuss over your makeup.
Giving him your best bitch face in the mirror, you check your hair one more time before turning to him, letting your arms fall to your sides in a huff.
“Well, I guess it’s gonna have to do, because this is as good as it’s gonna get.” you tell him, fighting the urge to throw up, scream, and run away all in one.
True to his word, Dean had stayed at your place all night, and even though you hated to admit it, you did feel a little more comfortable around him now that the two of you had spent all of last night, and most of the day, together.
If you were being honest, you weren’t sure what you were feeling as a whole. It did feel nice to cuddle with Dean last night, and it did help you a lot that he now knew you were a virgin, and didn't fire you from this strange job thing you had between you, or laugh in your face, but he was still a Winchester, and you were still in way over your head.
If you fucked this dinner up today, you were both fucked, and that wasn’t something to take lightly.
Dean crosses the floor in one, maybe two strides, picking you up as if you weighed nothing at all, and sat you on the sink in your bathroom before slipping between your knees, his large hands on your waist in order to keep you from falling off, and your hands making their way around his neck to stay balanced.
“I want you to do me something,” Dean said, leaning down and catching your lips in his in a swift peck to get your attention. “Stop worrying so fucking much!”
Leaning your head down on his shoulder, you closed your eyes and attempted to take a deep cleansing breath. You knew you were overthinking this. All you had to do is sit there and look pretty, much like at the party Friday night.
Dean had gone over the “details” of your relationship over breakfast this morning, and now, at least, you had a story of how you met.
Dean had said since you were an accountant at JPMorgan, he would tell the family that he’d met you on one of his basic runs to the bank, and gotten your number. You were a few dates in, and had only been dating close to two months, which would explain the fact that you don’t know each other very well, and cover up the fact that you were still a little awkward around each other in some aspects.
As far as the lack of job now, Dean said that you picked up a job as an editor for a local publishing company, and worked from home so that you could study graphic design on the computer. Something you always wanted to do.
Dean also told you that he could help get you on at the publishing company to work from home reviewing different transcripts next week, so that everything would be legit. He also promised to pick up the slack in whatever money you needed, so that you would want for nothing, seeing as he was technically still your client, even though this had taken a turn far surpassing escort services, and client, clientele relationships. That ship sailed the moment that you had to be introduced to John fucking Winchester.
“I just don’t want to fuck this up.” you tell him, searching his mossy green eyes as he searched yours.
“Pretty girl, you’re not gonna fuck this up. Everything is gonna be just fine, just follow my lead, nothing bad will happen, and I have already told you, I will pay you very well, you know that. “
Nodding your head, you let Dean give you another peck on the lips before helping you down off of the sink, and lacing his fingers in your own, leading you towards your apartment door, and down to his car that was parked on the street.
When you came to a stop you couldn’t help but drool over the sleek black ‘67 Impala that was waiting for you both there. Dean gave you a smirk as he opened the door, his features shifting to an almost playful, boyish smirk that seemed to wash away some of the years that he held so close to the surface, yet so out of reach.
“You like?” he asked, wiggling his eyebrows at you playfully.
“Dude, she’s beautiful!”
“She’s my Baby,” he said, helping you off the curb and into the car, shutting the door, before jogging around to the driver’s side.
Baby purred to life, as Dean turned the key in the ignition, and pulled onto the busy New York street. Reaching over he grabbed your hand in his, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
‘You can do this Y/N,’ you thought to yourself, ‘just act natural.’
God, you hoped you weren’t lying to yourself, because if you fucked this up, there was no word in any language that would describe just how fucked you were.
A short drive later, and Dean was turning onto an expansive estate in Upstate New York. Rolling hills with green grass, a long paved driveway, and a large house that looked more like a castle sitting on top of a hill greeted you as Dean pulled up in front of the house, and put Baby in park.
“Okay sweetheart, you ready?” Dean asked, giving you a reassuring smile as he put his hand on the door, ready to open it.
“As I’ll ever be,” you tell him in what you hoped was a confident tone. Dean smiled at you, giving you a peck on the cheek and whispering in your ear.
“It’s already show time Y/N. People are watching and there are cameras everywhere, but it’s okay, I’ve got you, and I’m not going to let anything happen to you remember that.“
Nodding your head, you lean over and boldly give him a peck on the lips, which caused a grin to spread across his face. His eyes sparkled as he kicked the door open, and made his way around the car to open your door.
You weren’t even out of the car all the way when Sam came to a stop in front of the two of you with Jessica in tow.
“Dean, Y/N, It’s good to see you again.” Sam said, greeting you warmingly and Jessica smiled at the two of you. You managed to give Sam a tight, nervous smile as Dean pulled you closer to him.
“Where is everyone Sammy?” Dean asks, turning Sam’s attention away from you, and to his older brother.
“Out back in the garden. Dad said he wants to have dinner out there. He’s been in a mood all day, you know how he gets. He’s not happy about that deal that didn’t go over so well this week with you, so get ready for that.” Sam warned, and Dean let out a heavy breath.
“Yeah, I figured as much.” Dean said, as he and Sammy started making their way towards the garden in the back part of the estate with you and Jessica in tow. Jessica gave you an encouraging smile as you both rounded the corner, and you wondered just how nervous you looked to her.
You didn’t really have time to speak to her before the booming voice of John Winchester crossed the lawns, as John, Rufus, and another man in a ball cap came into view. Rufus excused himself, heading towards the other side of the house, as the four of you approached the long table that was already set with plates, beers, and wine.
“Dean, I was wondering where the hell you got off to when you got home from that job I sent you on, I should have known this pretty little thing would have had something to do with your disappearance.”
You blushed deeply as you hid slightly behind Dean, wishing John would find another target, and just leave you alone.
“Easy old man, you're gonna scare her off, and then I’ll be down to the only girl amongst all you boys.” Jessica chided, as she flopped down at a chair at the table.
“Jessica, so nice of you to join us this evening.” John said, giving her the side eye before turning his attention back towards Dean, who was helping you sit down in a chair before taking a seat next to you, Sam sitting down next to Jessica.
“So boy. What the hell happened?” John asked, jumping right to business as waiters appeared out of nowhere and started plating food for everyone at the table.
“He didn’t like your terms, so I executed the order you gave me before I left.”
“You could have at least tried to change his mind.” John said, taking a bite of his food, eyeing Dean like a wolf that was eyeing his pry. You hated the way he looked at Dean. Sure you didn’t know much about their business, but you certainly didn’t feel Dean deserved the way John treated him.
“That’s not really a conversation for dinner Dad,” Sam said, stepping in for his brother, “Dean’s the best we got. If he said the deal didn’t fly, it didn’t fly, it’s that simple.”
John gave Sam an irritated look, but didn’t press the issue.
“Oh, Y/N, where are our manners, so wrapped up with business and all that I almost forgot to introduce you to our guest! This is my friend Bobby. He’s going to be opening up a garage in the area, so he’s here scouting property, and Bobby, this is Y/N, Dean’s new girlfriend."
Bobby gave you a smile and a nod, but said nothing, letting the conversation fall away a little as everyone tucked into their food. What conversation did flow was a lot lighter. Sport, cars, family members that John hadn’t seen in a while. If you didn’t know better, they almost felt like a normal family. Almost.
One thing you had to say for sure was that you did very much like Jessica. She bit no bones with the large, dangerous men at the table around her, and had no problem putting each and every one of them in their place if they needed it. Especially John. She was like Sam’s personal pitbull, and you made a mental note to make sure that you stayed on her good side.
Soon enough the dinner was over, and Bobby had excused himself, saying he needed to get back to work, leaving only you and Jessica with the Winchesters. John wiped his face, and threw his napkin down on his empty plate in front of him, his eyes dancing across the table at Dean and you, a smirk that would make the devil blush on his face, as his dark gaze stuck on Dean.
“Sammy, why don’t you take Jessica in the house and do something to entertain yourselves, I want to have a word with your brother and Y/N in private.” John said, and you saw Dean and Sam exchange a confused look as Sam and Jessica got up from the table, making their way towards the house. Dean shifted closer to you, lacing his fingers through yours to stop your hands from shaking.
Whatever John had in mind to discuss with the two of you, you had a feeling that this was going to be uncomfortable at best, and humiliating at worst.
When Sam and Jessica were no longer outside, John turned his full attention to the two of you.
“So, Y/N. How long have you been seeing my son?”
Swallowing hard, you try to speak past the lump in your throat, your voice coming out a lot smaller than you would have liked it to.
“About two months.”
John nodded, biting his lip and running his hand over his beard.
“Two months, hmm. So I assume you know by now the line of work our family does.”
Dean made to say something, but the distinct sound of a gun cocking behind you made you both stop dead in your tracks. Your shaking became visible, but Dean stayed calm, giving you a reassuring squeeze.
“She knows in theory, but she doesn’t know any details.” Dean said, completely unbothered by the gun that was pointing at his back.
“Let the girl speak for herself Dean.” John said, leering at his son from across the table.
“I don’t know a lot sir, nor do I want to.”
John nodded his head, chuckling to himself before reaching in his pocket and pulling out his phone, throwing it down on the table in front of you. The picture of Your Sugar Daddy app on full display. Your eyes went wide, and your mouth went dry. Even Dean sat up a little straighter next to you.
“You two want to cut the bullshit and explain this, because you know I don’t like to be lied to Dean.” He said, his voice dripping with venom. “Did you bring a fucking whore into my house Dean? To my dinner table?”
“No.” Dean said, eyes locked on his father.
“Then what the fuck is she doing on the site son?”
“It’s not like that.” Dean said, shifting in his chair.
“Really, because there are DM’s on this account asking her to escort you to your brother’s party last Friday night. Did you think I wouldn’t do a background check boy?”
Suddenly your brain that had turned to a mush of fear started working, an idea hitting you like a lightning bolt.
“Roll play,” you blurted out, and both men looked at you with shocked expressions, before Dean’s became slightly amused.
“That’s right father, it’s just, roll play, nothing more.” Dean said, licking his lips sensually, throwing his arm around you, and running his teeth over your ear, sending a visible shiver down your spine that landed somewhere deep in your belly.
The shock faded from John’s face, and pure amusement took its place as he clapped his hands together, throwing his head back in a laugh as the man with a gun behind Dean disappeared.
“I’m sorry you two. For a moment I thought you were actually an escort.” John said, still chuckling to himself.
Dean gave a tight laugh, and you blushed deeper than you ever have in your life.
“Well father, my sex life isn’t something I like to brag about, I like to keep what happens in the bedroom between the two of us.”
John nodded, still looking very amused, but you thank any God that was listening that he bought it.
“Speaking of your bedroom, that’s something else I want to talk to you about.” John said, and Dean sat back seriously in his chair.
“In order to keep your girlfriend safe, and keep the high table off of your ass, I want your girlfriend to move onto the estate with you.”
Your eyes bugged out of your skull, and Dean stiffened next to you.
“Dad, this is, sudden, I’m not sure that’s necessary. We’ve only been together two months.”
John raised his hand, stopping Dean mid sentence.
“It wasn’t a request. I expect you to have her completely moved in by tomorrow morning. I know you said she doesn't know a lot, but a little is too much these days.”
You didn’t know whether you were going to cry or pass out, but John seemed to have sensed your upset state. Placing a hand on your shoulder as he came around the table that made your skin crawl, you leaned in closer to Dean.
“It’s for your protection Y/N. Trust me. Also it won't be so bad here! Most women would give up everything to find themselves in your shoes! Now Dean, take her and get her settled in, you can go and help her collect her things tomorrow.”
With that John left the two of you both sitting alone as the dark sky spread over the expansive lawn.
For just a moment you thought you were going to succumb to tears, but Dean’s hand around yours, lifting you from the table, and leading you through the house that would now be your home kept you grounded and in character.
Dean said nothing, just led you through the overly done halls, and rooms filled with expensive furniture.
You got to his bedroom. It was a large room with a fireplace of its own, the same expensive furniture that lined the whole house, and a huge king sized bed. With the door safely closed, you fell into his arms, letting the tears wash over you, and he let you cry it out, picking you up, and laying you down on the satin sheets that covered the bed. Shushing you, and kissing the top of your forehead.
“I’m sorry sweetheart, I’m so sorry.”
