31; COLLAPSE

he should’ve known better.

this was the only thought racing in aran‘s mind as he sat on one of those uncomfortable hospital chairs in the emergency room‘s waiting area.

he should’ve noticed sooner.

it’s not like he had been completely clueless either — he knew that they‘ve been overworking themselves and that (as always) they just decided not to show their fatigue. and yet they couldn’t conceal the countless coughs that bc escaped them on the daily or how hard it was for them to breathe after light walks or going up a flight of stairs.

aran saw everything.

and still they ended up in the er.

he couldn’t help but partially blame himself. he could’ve been more persistent with his childhood friend, like he was when they were younger. he could have forced them to rest.

“are they okay?” kita’s voice ripped him out of his thoughts, bringing him back to reality. “have you heard anything?”

the group of friends sat down on the chairs next to him, all visibly shaken and confused.

“nothing,” the spiker replied as he shook his head, “but they’re stable”

“good,” kita replied, nodding, putting a comforting hand on aran’s shoulder.

soon after the only audible sounds coming from the five guys were their boots tapping on the light flooring as a few of them bounced their legs. it was atsumu who broke it, crossing his arms in confusion and frustration.

“i don’t get it,” he shook his head, “how could this happen?”

“they’re chronically ill, tsumu,” his twin shot back. “and it’s not like this is the first time this happened,” he added afterwards, mumbling.

kita took a deep breath, leaning back. “we shouldn’t overthink this now. we can always talk to them later” the young men agreed after a few seconds, nodding their heads hesitantly.

“¥100 that they didn’t realize it was bad enough to go to the doctors,” suna quipped weakly, desperately trying to lighten the grim atmosphere, earning a few chuckles.

they knew that the middle blocker was most likely right. everyone of them had their own (insufferable or questionable) quirks and bad habits, some more and some less serious.

but none of them ended up in the hospital because of it yet.

well, you win some, you lose some.

“am i a bad friend for wanting to give them an earful?” aran asked, looking at his friends with a deep frown. “i really want to, but i feel like that would only pour more salt in the wound, you know?”

“not a bad friend,” kita stated shrugging, “maybe not the best at reading the room, but not a bad friend. don’t think too much about it now. you did all you could and you shouldn’t be beating yourself up, alright? they’ll be okay”
