#'... let's ask Elrond'

It's always been so funny to me that the Council of Elrond is literally just a meeting of people who have showed up in Rivendell with different problems and just happened to do so at more or less the same time. They didn't gather there to discuss the Ring, the future of the Middle Earth or the rise of Sauron.
Nope. Each of them have faced An Issue and decided to ask Elrond for help.
Poor Elrond. He managed to avoid the kingship, but not becoming a parent figure for almost everyone in the Middle Earth.

As an archivist, thinking about the right to be forgotten in a specifically archival context, and the idea that not everyone wants their stories or their records to be made available to anyone/for everyone; that often, what a community judges to be the best preservation for their own histories and culture is not what is beneficial to outsiders, especially outside academics.
More specifically, thinking about this in the context of Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit/The Silmarillion/other Legendarium books as “historical” texts.  Thinking about maybe the “authors” not writing everything down because they understand the power of stories and how the telling of a thing grants a certain power over it, over how it is known and spread, and positions the teller as a figure of authority over what (and who) is depicted.
We already know that Bilbo is an unreliable narrator, that he changes things and leaves things out.  There were a few posts and fics years ago, when the Hobbit movies came out, about Bilbo befriending a young Estel in Rivendell and deliberately leaving that out of his stories at Gandalf/Elrond’s request.  What other things might he have left out, perhaps, out of respect for his friends in the Company and their desire to keep their culture and language private and closed?
Pengolodh compiling the Annals of Beleriand from which came the greater part of The Silmarillion - but he was in Gondolin for much of the First Age, and would have had to rely on other sources to give an account of the rest of Beleriand.  Who did he talk to?  What might they have said and not said, and what might they have requested he include or keep out?
Anyways, the Legendarium as an archive, something actively created and shaped by the different people in and around it, who both added things and left things out unintentionally or by design or on request.
#lotr#silmarillion#ironically this would make the archivists of middle-earth more respectful and conscious of this than many irl archivists#i jest; there are many excellent archivists who are putting the time and the effort in to do the work right and to spearhead change#not that there aren't still a great many traditionally trained archivists who are being absurdly obstinate about this#but there is progress; however slow; being made in the archival field about recognizing people's rights to their own records#writing this instead of my personal archives paper asdfghjkl;#this isn't the main point of this post but i also like to headcanon post war of wrath burgeoning loremaster elrond#travelling around and meeting different communities and hearing their stories#and sometimes they ask him to share those stories with others and many other times they ask him not to spread them#he meets a kindi tribe in the east who have no desire to be involved in any of the bullshit happening over in the west#they are fine with him as a friend but explicitly ask that he not let anyone else know about their existence#he befriends dwarves living in the blue mountains who wish people to remember the glory of tumunzahar and gabilgathol#but who don't want their culture and language widely spread for outsiders to know#he reestablishes contact with the silvan elves in the greenwood who are eager to hear news of their long sundered kin#and request that he bring news of them to the survivors of ossiriand

Maglor and Elrond, ‘poured forth their joy in music and song’, and Rivendell for the writing prompts?
Elrond & Maglor, G, 1k (from this prompt list)
Elrond watched Maglor’s fingers as he plucked at the strings of the harp. He was always entranced by Maglor’s hands, long-fingered, graceful, and elegant, capable of creating melodies of surpassing beauty, and yet they were the same hands that had wrought violence unthinkable. The same hands that could spin stories from strings had laid the havens to waste until the streets were stained scarlet.
Fear and awe and a strange sense of peace—Elrond could little name the emotions he felt when Maglor was near, but these he could identify. Beauty and terror, comfort and pain. He never knew quite what he felt around Maglor, but he was strangely drawn to him, like a moth to flame.
He and Elros had been saved, but he did not know why, and he was too frightened to ask.
Maglor began to sing in the High Tongue, and though Elrond did not understand the words that spun through the air, he could understand the shapes of their meaning—the joy of life and growth, and the dance of renewal and rebirth.
Elrond stood in awe, transfixed by the beauty of the song and the lilt of the harp. He felt almost as if he could touch the music, if he bent his mind and will hard enough to the task. He felt Maglor’s voice in his chest, in his heart, in the pulse of the air around him. Everything listened, bending ear to the power of the song.
The strange words took form, and Elrond heard new voices join the song. The sweet, pure voices of nightingales sang from the shadows, and Elrond caught a glimpse of fluttering wings. White petals of night-blooming jasmine bloomed upon the pillars, and their light scent filled the room.
Elrond reached out to stroke a petal of the pale flower that grew before his feet, twisting upward until its petals brushed against his chest. His fingers passed through the petals, and the flower melted away at his touch.
“It is only an illusion,” Maglor said softly, and the spell was broken. “The same kind of illusion that Finrod wove in Tol-in-Gaurhoth.”
“Where is it—where are the flowers and birds from?”
Maglor was silent for a moment. “They once filled the gardens of Nargothrond, before its fall.”
Elrond considered this. “Can you teach me to weave illusions with songs?”
Maglor smiled and beckoned him near. “I can teach you that and more.”
---
“Will you not stay?” Elrond asked.
“Only for the night,” Maglor said.
They stood beneath the eaves of the Last Homely House. Nearby, the waterfall poured into the starlit pool that lay behind the slope the house stood upon. Evening birds called softly to one another, hidden among the boughs of the trees, and the faint sounds of laughter and music spilled from the doors of the house. In the valley around them, all was painted in the soft purple of twilight.
In the silver light that fell from the lanterns hanging overhead, Maglor looked younger than he had for many centuries, and the soft shadows of twilight removed the lines of care from his face.
“Will you join us in the Hall of Fire?” Celebrían asked, nodding at the harp fastened to Maglor’s back. “It is Midsummer and a time of celebration here. We would welcome your craft. There are few among us now who can sing and play with the skill of the Elder Days, and it is long since the Hall of Fire has been graced with such skill.” She turned and smiled at Elrond. “Perhaps Elrond will join you. He does not often sing anymore, and little of the lays of the First Age, but perhaps now that you are here he might be convinced.”
Elrond pressed Celebrían’s fingers gratefully. Ever gracious, she had smoothed away any uncertainty Maglor might have felt.
“Please, join us,” Elrond said, gesturing for Maglor to enter the house. “Tonight, we shall sing as we once did.”
Maglor smiled.
---
Inside the Hall of Fire, the fire burned low in the hearth, little needed with the warmth the summer sun had laid upon the house. The lanterns glowed brightly upon the walls, and the faces of the gathered Elves were merry, for they had just finished the Midsummer Feast and gathered now for tales and songs of joy and wonder.
Maglor set his harp between his knees and placed his fingers over the strings. Elrond readied his lute, waiting for Maglor to begin. Maglor’s fingers brushed over the strings of his harp, and a few quiet notes drifted into the hall.
The hall fell silent.
Maglor plucked the strings louder, his hands rippling over the harp like rain. At his glance, Elrond joined in.
Maglor began to sing with a voice that held the power and gentleness of the sea—now the voice of the ocean’s might and majesty, now the voice of the softly spilling waves. Elrond joined his voice with Maglor’s, weaving in and out of the ebb and flow of Maglor’s voice.
Images began to fill the hall. Elrond scarcely heard the gasps of the gathered Elves, so consumed was he by the power of Maglor’s voice and the strength of the song they sang.
Golden light filtered through the hall. It was the light of high noon on a Midsummer’s day in Valinor. This Elrond knew in his heart, though he had never seen the shores of Aman. If he looked closely enough, he could almost see the golden leaves of Laurelin spread above the heads of the gathered Elves.
The sun-golden and star-silver petals of elanor sprung up from the floor, their star-shaped heads nodding in a gentle breeze. Between them sprouted the fragrant stems of lissuin , filling the hall with their light scent.
Elrond heard now the soft splashing of waves upon the shoreline and the distant cry of gulls winging overhead, and his heart was stirred with longing for a distant country he had never seen.
Maglor turned to him and smiled, and in his eyes shone bright, unrestrained joy.
Warmth pooled in Elrond’s chest as he smiled back.

Ranyatinwe and Galadriel had exactly one emotional moment in the 3rd age. After Celebrian sailed. They don't talk about it, if you ask them, it never happened.
Both will deny it until the day the world breaks but they even shared a small actually comforting gesture.

Yk what cracks me up is that the Council of Elrond isn’t even an organized event planned years in advance or anything. It’s just like…the messengers of a bunch of world leaders with a bunch of different problems coming to Elrond for advice but coincidentally they all get there at the same time,,,,
It’s hilarious. Elrond sitting them down like schoolchildren at a history lesson to explain how all their problems are connected. The random forming of the fellowship bc it’s a bunch of strangers prepared to go take a message back home but instead they get sent on a quest to save the world,,,,
Just the chaos of it all. The way literally everyone’s initial response to their problems was “let’s go ask Elrond.”
“Let’s go as Elrond” is the middle earth equivalent of “google it” and I think that’s great.

Thanksgiving headcanons for the Lotr crew
Its hosted in Rivendell but Elrond lets people extend the invite to others so everyone comes
Sam is in the kitchens from 6am cooking a million things-he also brought several side dishes premade
Frodo is all over the decorations and setting the table but he also made some cookies
Arwen is also very particular about this particularly the table
She has made a seating chart which she hopes will minimize squabbling
She has also set some ground rules like no dissing on your child’s interracial marriage (for Elrond and Thranduil)
Bilbo helps Sam cook in the morning but then he starts drinking around midday and doesn’t stop til he is dragged to bed by Frodo and Erestor
While Elrond is hosting he doesn’t do much just sits around and judges
He and Thranduil will be breaking Arwen’s rules
Thranduil and Gloin out drink Bilbo. They are having a silent drinking contest which has not been spoken of. Each one just decided to out drink the other
Thranduil wins cause he drinks like three bottles of a wine a day
Gimli and Legolas are just trying to avoid their parents
Thankfully Arwen sat them at the opposite end of the table
Unfortunately near Elrond who asks several awkward questions about how elf/dwarf sex works (he’s curious from a medical standpoint)
Bilbo drunkenly tells them how he had a dwarf boyfriend once so he totally understands what they’re going through at which point Frodo cuts off his wine supply
Frodo is actually trying to slow down Bilbo’s drinking all evening but with little success
Elladan and Elrohir have bonded with Merry and Pippin who introduced them to pipeweed. The four of them are stoned out of their minds and consequently eat more than everyone else. Arwen doesn’t understand what’s wrong with her brothers.
Aragorn is in charge of the turkey. Its excellent
He is mostly trying to hide from Elrond the whole time
Boromir tries to assist him with helpful turkey roasting tidbits but Aragorn would rather just do it himself
Eventually he assigns Boromir to the stuffing- its actually not bad
Erestor keeps Elrond occupied, they hang out and play chess in the middle of all the chaos
Glorfindel is the guy who is just ready for the holiday season to start
He keeps pestering Maglor to play Yule carols but Elrond’s rule is not until after dinner
Gandalf sits around and smokes and occasionally yells at Pippin. He takes turns hanging out with Bilbo and getting him drunker, hanging out with Elrond and Galadriel
Galadriel intimidates everyone no one knows where she was before or after dinner
Celeborn brought lembas rolls and cranberry sauce
Faramir makes a mean pumpkin pie
He’s just happy to be included. He fangirls over all the elves who indulge him mostly
Eowyn is enjoying watching the antics. She can’t cook for shit so she doesn’t bother to help with that but she does help clean up
So do Merry and Pippin but only because Gandalf forced them
Eomer brings “traditional Rohirric appetizers” and its smoked horse meat. Pippin and Sam are horrified to learn this.
Everyone has their favorite: Sam’s is obvs PO-TAY-TOES. Frodo likes cranberry sauce. Merry inhales stuffing. Pippin loves rolls.
Drunkest in order of most to least would be: Thranduil, Gloin, Bilbo, Gimli, Merry, Pippin, Legolas, Aragorn (but you can’t tell), Eomer, Eowyn, Glorfindel, Sam (he would’ve drunk more but he was busy cooking), Elladan, Elrohir (they’re so high they don’t drink much) Arwen (not a big drinker), Frodo(alcohol fucks with his anxiety so he just has one glass of wine) Faramir (who’s a teatotler cause he thinks if he did drink he’d become an alcoholic).
Lots of songs are sung before people start to retire for bed
Legolas and Gimli have sex really loudly between their fathers’ rooms to annoy them
Galadriel shows up around midnight and helps finish cleaning up
The clean up crew includes Eowyn, Merry, Faramir, Pippin, Gandalf, and Legolas and Gimli. They have a great time.

Imagine: elves having highly sensitive ears and you finding out by accidently touching them.
(You are half-elven and your ears aren’t near as sensitive to touch).
Tumblr media
Elrond:
You sat on the divan, lord Elrond was laying with his head on your lap as you gently played with his hair, letting him rant to get all his hidden bottles up emotions out. “Oh! And then-” he sat up and sighed. “I’ll just say that meeting was a disaster…” he slumped and looked over at you. “I’m sorry to rant like this…”
You smiled. “It’s alright…” you mumbled as you gently tucked a stray hair behind his ear, tracing it up to the pointed tip then down to his jaw. As you did, the pulled away. “What? What is it?”
“Nothing, it’s just that the ears of an elf are highly sensitive…”
You scooted closer. “Is that so?” You placed your hand on the back of his head so he couldn’t pull away and with the other you hand you gently traced the edge of his ear.
He went to pull away but you held him fast and it only took a moment for him to go limp in your arms as you continued to mess with his ears.
You smiled as he lay with his back pressed against your chest. His eyes were shut and his lips slightly parted as you continued to gently mess with his adorable pointed ears.
You smiled as a soft blush spread across his cheeks and the tip of his nose. “Aww, you look so cute when you blush…”
He opened an eye and looked up at you before he closed his eye again.
“Elrond…” you whispered after a moment.
The elven lord didn’t answer. He didn’t even stir and on top of that his breathing has slowed. You smiled and leaned down to place a gentle kiss on his forehead before closing your eyes as well.
Tumblr media
Legolas:
You and Legolas had been close for some time now and you had innocently came up behind him and began to mess with his hair, slightly damp from having recently washed it.
He turned to look at you. “Y/n?” You began to braid the hair by his ears, putting it into the style he normally wore. He relaxed and let you fix his hair for him. All went well until the last braid. Your pinky slowly slid down the outside of his ear as you braided it. He leaned back until his head fell on your chest as he breathed deeply.
“Legolas?”
“Ears…sensitive…elves…” he mumbled.
You smiled and kissed his temple. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” You asked, finishing off the braid.
He shrugged as you then went and touched the tip of his ear. He smiled and closed his eyes. “I knew you’d… mess with… me…”
Tumblr media
Thranduil:
You chuckled as he walked into one of the manny tents that lined the elven war camp. “What is so funny?” He asked, draping his cape over a chair.
You walked up to him. “Here,” you said, motioning for him to lean down a bit. He did, raising an eyebrow, you gently adjusted the silver crown, re-centering it in his forehead. As you did, you bumped the top of his ear. His eyelids fluttered for a moment before his hands flew up and grasped your wrists in one swift movement. You yelped in shock.
He loosened his grip a bit and gently rubbed your wrists.
You whimpered. “L-lord Thranduil?”
He sighed and let go of your wrists before standing straight and looking down at your startled face.
He sighed. “Sometimes I forget you are half human… elves ears are highly sensitive…”
“I-I’m so sorry! I didn’t know I-”
His lips met yours as he slowly brought your hands to this ears. You hesitated a moment before gently rubbing your finger along his ear. He let go of your wrists and pulled your body closer. “Y/n…”
Tumblr media
Lindir:
Lindir had been messing with you in a playful matter all day and you eventually decided to play back. You gently took his face in your hands. “You stubborn… elf…”
You had expected his eyes to widen and him to turn an adorable shade of pink but instead his eyes fluttered closed and lips parted slightly. “Y-y/n…m-my ears…”
“Hmmm… are they sensitive?”
“Yes, v-very…”
“Well it would be a shame if someone were to oh I don’t know perhaps…” you stood on the tips of your toes and very gently took the tip of his ear between your teeth.
His body instantly went limp and you gently lowered him to the ground before nipping gently at his ear while you ran your fingers through his hair.
He clawed at your back. “Y-y/n…”
You smiled. “Hmmm?”
He managed to look up at you before something took over his brain and his lips smashed on yours. “I love you…”
Your eyes widened. You’d only been dating him for a few days. You hadn’t even told anyone and here he was, kissing you as if you’d been together for years.
You pulled away, startled. “Lindir?”
He looked up at you with pleading eyes before he realized what he had done and he scooted away. “Y/n I-I’m sorry i-”
You pressed your lips on his again and began to mess with his ears once more. “I love you too.”

I was watching LOTR with friends the other day and someone pointed out that a major reason film!Elrond is upset about Arwen being in love with Aragorn is because of Elrond's own broken relationship with Isildur.
In the films Isildur and Elrond are kind of set up as....a broken failed parallel to Aragorn and Arwen?
Arwen reassures Aragorn that "he is Isildur's heir, not Isildur himself," and "is not bound to his fate"-- but Elrond disagrees, confident that Aragorn will be just like Isildur.
Film!Elrond is so certain that trusting in mankind is a mistake that will only lead Arwen to misery because he once trusted in mankind, and the man he trusted ended up failing him. His ally from the line of Elendil ended up falling to the power of the Ring and dying; he believes Aragorn may do the same thing. He doesn't just want to save Arwen's life and keep his daughter by his side; he wants to prevent Arwen from experiencing the same betrayal/heartbreak he experienced. Film!Elrond is very stoic and unsentimental, but there are all these hints at Elrond and Isildur's past relationship throughout the series. Everyone likes to make the joke "why didn't Elrond just toss Isildur into the fire?" but to me the answer is, partially, because he cared about Isildur. They were allies who fought side-by-side. After describing what happened in Mount Doom all those years ago, Elrond tells Gandalf that "It should've ended that day, but evil was allowed to endure." And I think it's interesting that he goes into passive voice for a moment, instead of saying that Isildur specifically allowed to evil to endure--because he's also blaming himself for allowing evil to endure, blaming his own failure to be harsh with Isildur and take the Ring from him by force. He's regretting that he was merciful and didn't "just toss Isildur into the fire."
youtube
His complicated emotions about Isildur also appear again in the Two Towers. After insisting that Arwen needs to give up Aragorn as a lost cause and travel into the West, Elrond has a conversation with Galadriel where she guilt-trips him for abandoning Middle Earth/mankind. When she asks him "do we let them stand alone?" Elrond walks into the study, and spends a long moment looking at his mural of Isildur.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He then, in the film's canon, agrees to send military support to one of Isildur's descendants."I don't care about Isildur anymore, men are weak," Elrond says, standing in front of his elaborate mural of Isildur and his shrine dedicated to Isildur's sword.
And yes this is all, again, a drastic departure from his characterization in the book-- most of the Aragorn-Arwen-Elrond stuff in the films is a drastic departure from the book. The films radically alter their dynamics, including eliminating stuff like Elrond being Aragorn's adopted father and all the "their bloodlines are related" stuff and etc etc etc etc etc. But honestly, now that I see it, this interpretation makes the film!Elrond-Arwen dynamic engaging in a way I hadn't recognized before? In some ways it puts Isildur into the role that Elrond's mortal brother Elros played for him in the books, because Elros is cut from the films entirely. Isildur is the reason film!Elrond knows what it's like to have some kind of close relationship with a mortal and then watch them die. When Elrond angrily speaks about the folly of trusting men, or insists to Arwen that Aragorn "is not coming back" so she should just get over him, he's speaking from experience--he's projecting his own weird failed broken betrayal-ridden Thing with Isildur onto Arwen and Aragorn. And in this context, his hopeless monologue about how Arwen will regret staying by Aragorn's side also feels like it's partially from his own experience. "If Sauron is defeated, and Aragorn is made king, and all that you hope for comes true, you will still have to taste the bitterness of mortality." When he fought three thousand years ago Sauron was defeated, and Isildur did become King, and yet... TL;DR : Film!Elrond had a nasty kind-of breakup with a mortal man 3000 years ago and instead of dealing with it he decided "Men Are trash Weak" and began projecting all of his drama onto Arwen

Lmao imagine if a couple wanted to get married in Lindon or Imladris and saw Elrond and was like “sure why not” and just, asked him to witness their vows in place of any actual maiar or valar.
Like the relationship between the elves in the Valar-Only-Mildly-Care Place and the Valar/Maiar themselves has got to still be stiff since elves are stupidly stubborn about holding grudges, so imagine if a couple just went “fuck the valinor glowsticks, Lord Elrond has been feeding us well and sheltering us for over a century. He’s got some ainur blood anyway.”
So they ask Elrond to be witness and he agrees thinking they just want a lord’s blessing or something and then-
“[Elvish Marriage Vows] we swear in the name of Lord Elrond Peredhel and Eru Illuvatar [More Marriage Vows]”
And at this point Elrond just has to roll with it but he bluescreens later while Erestor and Glorfindel laugh at him (Celebrian and or Gil-Galad too if they’re around)
Bonus points if It becomes a tradition in Imladris/Lindon even though he neutrally suggests a vala instead every time like
Elrond, trying not to get smited as soon as he steps foot into Valinor: hey Lady Yavanna is pretty cool though, right?
Elven Couple, exiled thousands of years ago and still frost-bitten: yes, pity there were no flowers in the Grinding Ice, my Lord. Anyways, would you mind being a witness to our wedding ceremony?”
Elrond starts glowing slightly and never lives it down. He goes to Valinor and people still ask him out of tradition or genuine respect and the Valar just have to put a small tapestry of Elrond as a patron of unions or something so they can claim some sort of control over the situation.
Elrond is mortified, and nobody lets him live it down.

Flower Crowns
pairing: Legolas x gn!Reader
summary: Legolas and reader are enjoying a calm moment on the journey to Mordor, reader makes a flower crown for Legolas and the elf must bear the teasing of his friend [‘Y/n’ used]
word count: 1.5k
warnings: none, fluff
∾∾∘⋅∗⋄⋆⋄∗⋅∘∾∾
You and Legolas sat in a meadow a few paces from where the Fellowship had set up camp. The sunlight was warm and wrapped around the two of you like a blanket. The green grass was soft and dotted with bright flowers all across the rolling hills. Very few were the times when the Fellowship was able to sit back and take a moment to breath and rest on the journey to Mordor. The hours of sun were spent walking, and occasionally running, on the track to Mount Doom. The majority of your moments of rest were at night, when it was time to sleep. But sleep was not the same as resting during the day. Thus, you and Legolas were very thankful for this short moment you got to spend calmly in the sun.
You look over at Legolas, who sat close to you. The blonde elf was gazing out across the meadow without much focus, mind surely wandering somewhere else. There was a ghost of a smile on his pale pink lips. The question of how soft his lips must feel suddenly popped into your head and you had to look away in embarrassment at the thought. You had met the elf prince at the Council of Elrond, and for the duration of the journey this far, you’d grown closer. Legolas was definitely the member of the Fellowship you spent the most time with. You deeply enjoyed the conversations you two had, but you equally enjoyed the ability to have comfortable silence with him. In all honesty, you’re starting to think you might be crushing on the Woodland prince. You’re not sure how to make any advances— or if you even should— but you know you want to spend more time with Legolas, and you know you want to be closer. And so here you are, sitting only inches apart from the elf, sharing a comfortable silence under the golden light of the sun. You’re looking at your surroundings and taking in the many wildflowers around you, when suddenly an idea strikes. You begin gathering a bouquet of these flowers with long stems to serve your plan.
Legolas noticed the sudden movement from his side. His attention was pulled from the beauty of the nature around him to the beauty of you. He cocked his head in confusion at your gathering of flowers, but said nothing and watched as you collected the colorful sprouts. Legolas watched softly as you settled back into your spot next to him, and he took your moment of distraction as a chance to inch a little closer to you.
“What are you doing, mellon nin?” Legolas asked curiously as he eyed your collection of wildflowers.
“You will have to see, mellon nin.” You replied coyly. Legolas let out a quiet chuckle at your response. But he did indeed watch as you began making something out of the flowers. Legolas watched, entranced, by how your fingers expertly braided the stems to connect each flower in your pile. You worked in silence, concentrating on not breaking the stems or the band of flowers that was becoming your crown. While you focused on your craft, Legolas focused on you. He admired your expression as you concentrated on the task at hand, your features were pleasant to say the least. He felt a little guilty, friends should not be having these thoughts of each other. Friends should not be admiring one another in a way that is more than platonic, yet here he is. Greedily, Legolas basks in your presence and he can’t tell if it’s the afternoon sun or your company that’s making him feel warm. He’s not sure what the stirring inside his stomach is, or the fluttering in his chest, but he’s become aware of the fact he’s only subject to such things when he’s around you.
It took you a few minutes, but eventually you finished your flower crown to much satisfaction. The bright colors popped under the sunlight, and it seemed fit for one of the fairies your mother used to tell you stories about. You smiled happily at your work. Legolas now was able to conclude what your project had been.
“It’s lovely. I did not know you were able to make such fine things out of flowers.” Legolas said with unfiltered admiration.
“Well then, now you know. My talents do not lie only in combat, I have many other skills as well.” You replied with a proud smirk, finally meeting his glowing eyes.
“I envy your craftsmanship.”
“Do you not know how to make flower crowns, Legolas?”
“I’m embarrassed to admit, I do not. It’s ironic—now that I think about it— that a Woodland prince does not know how to make a crown out of flowers.” Legolas looked down at his fingers and picked softly at the skin. “But yours is truly beautiful.”
A bold idea suddenly popped into your head, and a devious smile spread on your lips. You turned suddenly to face Legolas and then gently set your flower crown atop his head. The bright flowers lay perfectly on his silky golden hair. Your breath stuttered as you looked at the ellon, he truly seemed to be something out of a fairytale.
“There, a beautiful crown befitting a beautiful prince.” You meant to say that more as a tease, but your tone ended up a little too sincere than you’d wanted. Legolas’s eyes widened in shock at your forward comment and rose coloring began to dust his sharp cheeks. He opened his mouth to quip something back but shut it after failing to come up with a response and quickly averted eye contact with evident embarrassment.
“I-” Legolas cleared his throat and tried to start saying something but was interrupted when Aragorn’s approaching voice rang throughout your clearing.
“Pretty crown, Legolas. Though, I wasn’t aware it was custom for Mirkwood elves to bring their tiaras with them on life threatening journeys.” Aragorn walked up to stand in front of you and Legolas, wearing a teasing smirk and a raised eyebrow. Legolas let out a dry laugh and rolled his eyes while Aragorn continued, turning to you. “I take it you made this, Y/n.”
“You couldn’t tell by its outstanding appearance?” You responded sarcastically with a grin to match the ranger’s.
“I could tell by the fact that our favorite elven prince is wearing something only you could convince him to wear.” You began to laugh at Aragorn’s comment but then picked up on the underlying seriousness of his statement. There was something in your friend’s tone that was a little too genuine and it made your laugh die out rather fast in your throat. Thankfully you were saved from an awkward silence when you heard Merry and Pippin calling for you from the camp.
“Y/N!! Y/NNN! C’mere!! We need you to settle something, we need your help!!” You heard a loud rustling from where they were and then more shouting and you easily assumed the two hobbits were now roughhousing. You chuckled under your breath and began to get up from your comfortable spot in the grass. Legolas watched you get up with a saddened look that you didn’t notice.
“Apologies, it seems I’m needed elsewhere.” You turned and took your leave, heading back toward the camp to help Merry and Pippin settle their dispute.
Aragorn and Legolas watched you leave, and the elf’s longing gaze did not go unnoticed by the ranger. The Dunédain had the tack to wait until you had disappeared from sight before commenting on his friend’s apparent more-than-platonic watch over you.
“You seem to be enjoying yourself.” Aragorn said slyly, walking closer to his friend.
“It’s a nice day.” Legolas deflected with a growing blush.
“A very nice day for you, considering how close you were sitting next to Y/n.”
“Oh, shut it. Don’t you have hobbits to be fretting over?”
“Don’t you have a friend who makes flower crowns for you to be fretting over?”
“It was a one off thing, you’re making a bigger deal out of it than it is. And correct your tone, Y/n is a friend, nothing more.”
“Oh, and friends often make each other flower crowns and gaze at one another longingly?”
“Aragornnn.” Legolas groaned in exasperation and got up from his sitting position, being careful to keep the flower crown from falling off his head. He would be incredibly sad if something were to happen to the crown. Aragorn chuckled under his breath and walked beside Legolas as they began trekking back toward camp.
“Maybe you’ll just have to learn how to make flower crowns as well, so you can return the favor.” Aragorn suggested with a hint of playfulness.
“…I think, after all of this is done, I’ll give Y/n a far more substantial crown.” Legolas muttered with a small self-satisfied smile. The ranger’s eyebrows raised in surprise at his friend’s confidence, but internally he looked forward to seeing such a day take place.

Day 5: Tears Unnumbered
A letter from the private archives of Lord Elrond of Rivendell, now kept in the Royal Archives of Arnor.
Tumblr media
My d[e]ar[es]t R[uk]o (name uncertain), I have high hopes for the battle to come so tr[y] [n]ot to fret too much (I know it […] like asking A[rie]n not to rise [b]ut try for me.) Here is a token of my [word illegible] to keep you safe (?). With [word illegilble], Fin[no]
Despite the obvious damage, this letter dated to the second half of the First Age is remarkably preserved from time thanks to countless layers of Elven enchantments. All the damage seems to have been inflicted during the lifetime of the person who received this letter (Elf Ruko), probably due to poor conditions of storage. The spots and smudges let the historians think they may be tears, for the paper shows no other sign of water damage, and some words are worn out by what may be frequent touch.
We may make the educated guess that this letter was re-read by the elf called Ruko after the battle as they mourned their friend Finno and was an object of high personal value. The historians of the First Age agree that the battle mentioned in this letter is likely to be the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, the battles of Tears Unnumbered, as it fits in the timeframe this letter is dated from.
Despite its briefness, this letter is a precious and rare testimony of a close friendship between two soldiers, showing that, despite the state of semi-constant war of the First Age, there was an efficient messenger service between the Elven strongholds.
We know not how this letter ended in the keeping of Lord Elrond of Rivendell, nor why he put such care in its preservation, but this is one of the last written primary sources we have from the First Age and we can only be grateful it survived to this day to offer us a brief glimpse of two unknown, long dead Elves.

Elrond and Thranduil with a hobbit reader, like maybe she's bilbo's sister in the events of the hobbit or Frodo's sister in lord of the rings and them having a huge size kink because like she's so small and naïve to the ways of the world she's never been outside of the shire, just...let them shelter (*cough* corrupt *cough*) her
Elrond
When the Dwarves arrived in Rivendell seeking information and supplies, the Lady hobbit caught his eye. Bilbo's sister was such a sweetheart at the table. Her manners are perfect and the way she looks at him has Elrond seeking to catch his breath.
During the dwarves short stay, he makes it a point to spend as much time with the Lady hobbit as possible. Walking with her through the gardens, showing her the vast library, watching her face light up in wonder as he showed her around.
Finding excuses to have her sit in his lap, or to pick her up. His large hands engulfing her body, he has to stop himself from groping her.
Elrond just wants to keep her all to himself. Telling her that she is free to stay behind. If she agrees he is over the moon although won't show it much. If she says no however, he says that his door is always open to her and that she should come and visit after her adventure.
Thranduil
When the dwarves were imprisoned, Bilbo's sister was taken with them.
Legolas and Tauriel didn't know what to do with her. She wasn't a dwarf and definitely not a human nor elf.
When she was presented to Thranduil he knew exactly what she was. A hobbit.
The king had only heard of them, and seen drawings. But he was sure of what she was.
He liked the way she looked up at him, big doe eyes full of fire. He sent everyone out of the throne room to question her.
Thranduil circled her like a hawk. Asking questions about why she was with filthy Dwarves. Noting that she was a long way from home.
He wanted to keep her as a pet, have her curled up in his chambers at all hours of the day, even sitting in his lap on the throne.
He'd offer her a deal, her freedom for the dwarves freedom. His lips curling into a devilish smile when she naively agrees
