The hard thing about this comic is that I’m now extremely invested in a version of The Hobbit combining book canon/popular fanon/my own weirdness, that exists largely inside my own head. And the only way I can explain that vision is by posting chapters but they take so long.
Me explaining how the butterfly symbolism will shift in meaning over the course of the comic, and how Thorin’s refusal to say “at your service” in Bag End will get a callback in the dungeons of the Woodland Realm, how the framing device will change over time, and how the One Ring will factor into all of this when it finally shows up in the comic in a few years:

I am very excited to post the next chapter of The Hobbit comic!
It is taking a long time because of the elaborate background art. If I really push myself and split it into two, I may be able to post it April 13th. if not, it will be posted May 13th.
My biggest inspirations for the next chapter are the “journey sequences” in Miyazaki movies like My Neighbor Totoro, and the journey sequences in the Lord of the Rings films.
Thank you to my Patrons for supporting my art and allowing me to justify buying new photoshop brushes to use in my paintings. You can join my patreon and see weekly art/comic previews here.
Posting weekly Patreon updates has made me realize how fast I draw. It turns out I can keep up with a weekly update schedule; my previous “20 pages per 2 months”/ 2 pages a week schedule was just absurdly fast, even if it didn’t feel that way.
Thank you all for reading! And get ready for Chapter 18, coming— eventually!

The front door of Bag End in my webcomic adaptation of The Hobbit, as seen in Chapter 1 vs Chapter 18 :). It turns out your art style changes a lot when you draw a webcomic. (I love painting Ghibli-inspired backgrounds!)
Chapter 18 hasn’t been posted publicly yet, but you can view the first several pages (along with other art) on my Patreon.

The Hobbit comic adaptation detail: the art style used to represent Bilbo feeling a need to remain "unattached" in Chapter 15 gets a callback in Chapter 17, when Bilbo "decides" he is not going on the journey. (You can read the full comic here!)

As he lay in bed he could hear Thorin still humming to himself in the best bedroom next to him:
Far over the misty mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away, ere break of day,
To find our long-forgotten gold.
Bilbo went to sleep with that in his ears, and it gave him very uncomfortable dreams.
This moment from chapter 16 of The Hobbit comic adaptation symbolizes the core of the relationship between Bilbo and Thorin, in this version of the story.
Bilbo and Thorin are both awake long after everyone else is asleep, kept up by their anxieties over the journey.
Bilbo’s room is decorated with a bunch of little objects; Thorin is in a spare room that is completely empty. It’s a “visual reference” to the idea that Bilbo has a home in Bag End, and tons of little treasures of his own that he’s very attached to— but Thorin has none, because the Lonely Mountain and its “long forgotten gold” was taken from him.
(You can read the full comic adaptation here on tumblr, on Webtoon, or on Ao3, and tip the artist/preview the next chapters on Patreon!)

A pitch for my webcomic adaptation of The Hobbit! I made a similar post years ago, but I’ve updated it with the art as it appears in the final comic :).
You can read all 200ish pages of this comic that have come out so far on Ao3 here, on Webtoon here, and on Tumblr here. You can also see pages early and support my art on Patreon here!

I can't believe OP is trying to restart the old ship wars/flame wars. have people already forgotten what happened last time????
Tumblr media
Every now and then I get asked about ships, and I usually avoid the question both because I think it's obvious what will win and because "ship wars" just aren't fun. But, fine. Just this once, in honor of Valentine's Day, ~let the ship wars rage~. Hopefully no one sails too far west and triggers the sinking of Númenor.

I love how “In Dreams” from the Fellowship of the Ring uses lines from “The Song of the Ent and the Entwife.”
Like the ent and entwife, Frodo and Sam are separated despite their love for each other; but like the ent and the entwife, they eventually reunite at the end of their days, when Sam follows Frodo across the sea. <3

Today is a big day on the Spanish internet. Valentine's day in Spanish is "día de San Valentín", which sounds almost the same as "Sam va lentín", which is how, in some parts of Spain , you would say "Sam goes slowly".
Hence, since a few years ago, every February 14th, the Spanish internet is full of "wait for me mr. Frodo" style memes. One of our holiest days of the year.
