Writing Poetry With Prompts
Turns out I'm only good at making posts when I'm procrastinating doing something else, even if that something else is something I like doing. In this case, it's reading another three chapters of Jane Eyre. I love the book, but inspiration always strikes at the wrong time!
Without further ado, here are some tips for writing poetry based on prompts. This includes words, pictures, songs, other poems, places, emotions and anything else that works as a prompt. I'm trying to avoid being too specific here.
1. Emotion
In my opinion, one of the most important parts of writing poetry is feeling emotion. [I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT JUST NEGATIVE EMOTION, LET'S ERASE THE MINDSET THAT ART IS ONLY GOOD WHEN THE ARTIST IS UNHAPPY]. Let yourself think for a while about the emotions the prompt evokes in you. This will guide your writing and make it feel more authentic.
For example, the prompt 'coffee' makes me feel warm and loved and I can imagine myself being handed a steaming cup of coffee on an autumn morning, and this makes me feel happy and safe, which will inspire the next part of the process!
2. Style
My usual poetry style is called free verse. This means that my poems don't follow patterns, rhymes or a strict form, although my personal style often includes circular structures and repetition. Yours will vary from mine, and you may prefer to write in a specific form or just experiment. Poetry is often very dependent on the voice of the poet, which is one of the lovely things about it. My advice would be not to try and mimic someone else's voice, as it won't be so heartfelt and you might end up sacrificing uniqueness for 'professionalism' and the like.
Poems can be deeply metaphorical or wonderfully simple of even both. Remember that different readers will interpret your poem differently, and enjoy this! What would be the point in poetry if we all saw it the same way?
You don't have to rush finding a style, in fact if you try to pressure yourself less you may end up finding it much easier and it'll probably come naturally.
3. A Practice Technique
Writing is like anything else- it takes practice and time to master. It can often seem like the author has found it easy and hasn't practised to get where they are now, but that's not true. I practise poetry a lot, and although this can be just scribbling down verses in my little notebook to get myself back into it, I also use a specific technique called stream-of-consciousness.
It's simple. Take a piece of paper. Think of your prompt (or something that has inspired you recently!) and start writing. No punctuation, just words. I usually give myself 2 minutes but you can take more of less. Write what comes into your head without thinking, just whatever you think of in that moment, and if you find yourself doing it consciously, stop and start again.
You can use this piece of writing and turn it into a poem, or it can just be a way to find your voice! Do you naturally use metaphors (I do, not sure why, but I went on and on about sinking in the sea when I did this) or do you say things like they are, simple and clear?
4. Actually Writing It
Something I think is often overlooked is the fact that prompts aren't strict, and they don't come with rules. Don't worry if by the time you're writing you have a whole new idea, or it's only slightly linked to the prompt you started with!
When you are actually writing the poem, try to keep in mind the emotions you felt from the prompt. This is one of the ways poetry feels like venting/ranting for me, and it's a great outlet for my emotions at the end of a busy day, or a way to feel more empathy for the people around me, or just a way to have a bit of fun and experiment with words. In my opinion, it will be clear what emotions were put into a poem by the metaphors, similes and language you've used throughout the poem even without you explicitly saying anything about it!
5. Something To Remember
Your poems don't need to be perfect, or good, or even impactful. They will probably mean something to you anyway! I recommend keeping them even if you don't like them too much now. I have saved poems from when I was really young and I love reading them to see how much I've changed and improved!
Here's the poem I wrote with the prompt 'coffee':
Coffee tastes better when the person that made it loves you
Rivers are never wide enough to stop me swimming across
Just to feel your hand in mine one more time and
Tell me, when I made you coffee, what did it taste like?
Did it taste like love or obligation or weariness or affection?
I wonder, did it taste how it tasted when you made it for me,
Or did it taste like the width of the river and the distance swum,
Like the dead sailor’s heart, the decaying soldier’s last breath,
The gentle swaying of waves beneath our violently sinking boat?

writing prompts! all about feeling edition
from my own poetry.
cloudy skies still reflect the way I feel inside
sometimes I feel like I feel too much
I feel the silence slipping as the bird take up the call
my hands may never feel the same
I feel like my fingertips can glow
you make me feel safe like the rain on my face
I throw back my head and sing with the stars and feel so very small
I forgot how much it hurts to feel
we are the restless, we feel so alone
trying, but I cannot feel your skin next to me
I want someone to hold me while I still feel young
shiver is a feeling that runs in the blood
I will waste away while savoring the feeling of your laughter on me
there are chills along our spines that we feel as phantom limbs
I can't hold onto this feeling because you have stopped at seeing
you might feel the feathers down your throat like a taste of heaven
I feel orange blossoms growing against my thighs
let me at least feel my hands and feet while you steal the breath from me
we can no longer feel our fingers here
I perch my tongue on my cracking lips and feel a sense of sorrow
I feel like the stars shrink in the winter
you are the thunderstorm of feelings creeping down my spine
what can only be felt through the skin
the stillness can be felt in fingers gripping jacket sleeves
and I felt myself slipping away from your arms

writing prompts! all about moon edition
I sure write about the moon a lot.
dance with me under the moon
there was a scarlet moon against a sapphire sky
a full moon like like a perfect pearl
I love how the moon kisses me goodnight
as the moon sits in the sky, so too the ones we love will never truly die
under the moon, in the companionship of lonely trees
the moon arises from beyond the hill
I'll send you goodnight kisses when I look up at the moon
I'm over the moon when you smile at me
as sure as the fickle moon we'll part ways again
after the moon has risen and the blue is fading fast
you are a golden afternoon, you are a shining full moon
the moon shows up to shine, you're still holding my hand
how did you lure in the moon
does the moon always laugh behind my back
the moon waned to a crescent so it could hold the sun's light when it dawned
the clouds won't part tonight, so again, the moon won't speak to me
pull the moon down, capture the sun, if you were hiding then you reveal yourself to everyone
no moon to speak of, the darkness enthralls
the moon is so big and golden but I can cover it with my hand
I strangled the moon with shadows
this song is light moonlight
I know I'll miss you in the moonlight but rather you just let me grieve
when I look up I see the moon stretching out like a reflection on the water
there is too much moon when there should be sun
