one thing which bothers me about people calling 'the virgin suicides' (both novel and movie) male gaze and focusing on boys' pov of the lisbon sisters instead of the sisters' is that they totally miss the point. the perspective being male gazey is the very point, of how young girls are mysticized and denied being actual humans and instead being turned into reflections of whatever men want them to be. the neighborhood boys literally overlook very obvious cries for help and choose to interpret them as flirting. the atmosphere of death and desperation is omnipresent but they repress it and instead look for the signs of girls' interest in them, dismissing what the sisters are actually like and what interests them like when they haphazardly miss cecilia's love for frogs mentioned in her journal. these boys think lisbon sisters' lives had become about them to the same point as the boys' lives become dedicated to the girls. and the culmination of that is that they thought the sisters were going to wait around and signaling to them to free them. but instead they missed the signs the girls decided to free themselves on their own as the final act of reclaiming their agency.

On Monday, I almost tried to kill myself with a kitchen knife. I put the tip to my head and chest and wanted to push it in deep so my blood and organs would fall out and spill all over the floor and soak my feet. But I realised
That maybe my parents wouldn't care?

the virgin suicides foreshadowing is excellent
[tw for suicide, of course]
this is the image that the lisbon sisters’ father takes of them in their homecoming dresses - the girls look surprised that he doesn’t ask to get another, better photo, because they’re clearly posed in weird ways here. but all their poses are foreshadowing their deaths, so it sort of is the perfect photo.
from left to right,
Lux is pointing to a drip in the ceiling, but positions her fingers as though she’s holding a cigarette. she is smoking all through her final scene, and continues to smoke as she dies of carbon monoxide inhalation in the garage.
Therese’s eyes are closed, and she dies from overdosing on sleeping pills.
Mary’s is less clear, but I think the fact that she is leaning over can relate to the fact she dies with her head in the oven, crouched and leaning over. in the book, she survives this attempt and eventually dies later by overdosing on sleeping pills like Therese, so the fact that she’s the only one who isn’t doing anything "wrong" in this photo could also be a reference to her surviving the attempt they all do together.
Bonnie is the most evident, she is pulling her collar, and will die from hanging.
it’s notable that the "drip" that Lux is pointing to may symbolise Cecilia’s attempt in the bathtub. it may also foreshadow the boys’ discovery of the bodies, when one boy feels a light tap on his shoulder and looks up to discover Bonnie’s body hanging.
