Swan Lake // Mary Earps
Tumblr media
a/n: based off this and this request. Bear with me, I don’t have a clue about ballet, worked with these resources. Thanks to the anon! I hope the way I wrote it is somehow partly correct.
You were exhausted to say at least. The last few months, if not longer were the hardest of your life. Training with the ballet crew from morning to evening was a curse and a blessing. Your feet often hurt or when Mary would pick you up, you would immediately fall asleep in the car yet playing the odette had always been your dream. You worked hard, very hard to be where you were now. Many hours of dancing in your room, in the ballet studio where you used to be as a kid and as an adult, simply everywhere and at any time.
The ballet performance of swan lake was getting closer and closer. Closer than you would have liked. Each day that passed you got more nervous - what if you screw up?
Swan lake is one of the most demanding ballets and the black swan pas de deux, which could be regarded as the hardest dance in a ballet, is part of the extraordinarily challenging role of Odette/Odile. As the lead dancer in this duet executes one of the most challenging sequences -32 fouettes.
Swan Lake features two intermissions and a running period of about three hours. The dancers need to be extremely strong and resilient.
Ballet appears effortless and graceful, but it actually involves years of rigorous training and is incredibly technical.
You could imagine how your training schedule looked like. The ballet was hard, demanding yet you loved everything about it. You loved to work with your co-workers who became your second family.
Ballet was your first love and even if you thought about quitting, you never did, the love you held was always stronger than the actual negative.
So basically your life consisted of ballet and Mary Earps, your longterm girlfriend.
Mary.
Your anchor in the sea.
She understood you like no one else did, she loved you like no one else did.
The world refered to you as the power-sports-couple.
The footballer and the dancer as they say. It wasn’t always easy between the two of you, you had your ups and downs - professional footballer and ballet dancer, busy schedules, not much time for one another. Yet you managed. Your love was stronger than any schedule - your love was the motivation the other one had to keep fighting.
A match made in heaven.
-
"You‘re coming tomorrow, right?" you asked Mary who was laying beneath you as she drew patterns on your back.
"Of course, baby, I wouldn‘t miss it for the world" she stated, squeezing your hips as reassurance.
Weirdly enough, even though you had completely different schedules and training plans, Mary had always been at every important performance of yours and you were at all of her important matches (Euros, etc). It was something that meant more than words could: you would support each other no matter what.
"Lessi, Ella, Leah, everyone is gonna be there. They‘re gonna be amazed by you!" You giggled in her chest, her pride radiating of her body.
-
"Guys" Mary said in a stern voice to her national team mates. They looked at her with wide eyes, she normally used that tone on the pitch and only on the pitch. Were they in trouble? "So you know Y/n?"
"The girl you never shut up about?" Lessi asked with a sweet grin, knowing how obsessed Mary was with you and everything you did, "nah we don‘t know her" Ella added, mocking.
"Shut it!" Mary grumbled before she continued, "well, in a few months there will this big ballet performance and she‘s the principal dancer,"
"Is she havin‘ heart eyes?" Maya whispered as she looked at your lover girl who had the biggest smile and so said heart eyes covering her face. "And I want you to come. You don‘t have to, but i know she’d be really happy to see support from her friends."
Within seconds, the girls agreed, they loved you and the fact that you made Mary happy.
-
"What if I mess up?" you asked as you laughter died down, your head hidden in the crook of Mary’s neck. "You won‘t, love. You worked so hard to be there, you deserve it my girl, you deserve everything" she pressed a lingering kiss to your head, hugging you tightly.
Mary knew for sure that you would amaze everyone and with that thought she fell into a slumber, ready to see you shine.
-
"Wake up, baby, it‘s your big day" the goalie whispered as she kissed along your cheek. Not a morning person at all, you turned away, grumbling, "no baby, you‘ve to get up" pressing more quick kisses over your face as it scrunched up in responds, she knew you were slowly waking up. "Proper kiss?" you demanded softly with your morning voice while sitting up and rubbing your eyes.
"Anything for you" Mary firmly pressed her mouth on your own, one hand cupping your cheek to deepen it as she purred every inch of her love in that kiss.
Your mind was spinning as she pulled away, chest heaving at the intensity of her kiss - not expecting something like that in the early hours of the morning. "I made you breakfast and your towel is in the dryer so it‘s warm after your shower" you watched the goal keeper with so much love as she went to her drawer to hand you her hoodie, knowing that you get cold easily when you left the bed.
"What did I do to deserve you?"
Holding out her hand for you to take, the united player replied, "I ask myself the same question everyday" she didn’t give you the time to react before she pulled you at your hand in the kitchen, the table full of your favorite foods.
"Mary!" you gasped, "who‘s gonna eat all of that?" laughing at her confused expression, she answered straightaway, "you?"
-
Mary was jittery as she took a seat in the front row, next to her friends. She was biting her nails, body and mind filled with emotions.
She felt pride.
She felt excitement.
She felt nervous.
She felt afraid.
How will this end? She prayed that everything would work the way it should. That everything you did was the way it was trained. Ballet wasn‘t like dancing - Mary went on the pitch not knowing what‘s going to happen while you went on stage knowing exactly what should happen. It was the fear, the nervousness and the adventure that made both so exciting. In a way, your job and her job were so similar because they were so different.
The lights were on, people chatting and the curtain still closed, "she‘s going to be great" the skipper whispered in Mary’s ear as she was sitting behind her friend. With a squeeze on her shoulder, Leah tried to ease the goalies mind. Back at her funny and cocky self, she answered, "I know she will" and Mary truly believed it.
-
After what felt like forever in Mary’s eyes, the light started to dim before it went out fully, slowly the curtain was pulled open as it revealed the stage design. Everything looked beautiful and on point, nothing was where it didn‘t belong. The orchestra started playing, yourself going on stage looking absolutely breathtaking as you started the performance.
Mary sat there with her mouth agape, amazed by everything you did, her heart swelled with pride, eyes wide with hearts.
The goal keeper‘d seen you train and the effort you put in the show, the tears that left your eyes at night, the amount of times she carried your sleeping figure out of the car,
for the moment right now.
Everybody was holding their breath, nobody dared to say something (even Tooney, the goofy loud girl), the world just stopped. Everything disappeared - the ballet of the swan lake.
-
As the last note of the orchestra sounded, the silence became loud, a single tear of pride and joy escaped from Mary‘s eye. She said it before and will gladly do it again, you never failed to amaze her. It was the elegance of ballet that appealed to people, but if you look behind the façade - like Mary could - your mind would change, then you would know it not only looked effortlessly beautiful, but the years that each individual had to sacrifice.
The first to break the silence of the lionesses was Lucy, "wow" to which every girl agreed.
That performance was more than just wow yet everyone was too speechless to say anything else. As the lights were turned back on, the audience started to clap. Every single person in the audience stood up, clapping in their dazed state - it was the beauty of ballet.
The dancers, including yourself, stood in a row, smiling at the audience before bowing down. Your smile reached both of your ears, eyes fixed on Mary as she smiled proudly.
Everyone was also introduced individually with their role, who was then supposed to take a step forward, wave and bow again before joining the line again.
No doubt, when it was your turn that Mary told Alessia, "that‘s my girlfriend!" before clapping and cheering the loudest.
The goalie was the proudest girlfriend in the world, not just today but everyday.
-
"Baby, you were so amazing! And the sound effects with the-" Mary imitated the orchestra music, her hands flying around to visualize it, "and your moves" she stretched her legs in the air, walking on tip toes as she tried to explain every detail she saw. "Deep breaths my love" you giggled as you jumped on the kitchen counter, enjoying the show Mary gave you with her interpretation of swan lake. "Nah! It was just- you were just so- I’m so stunned" she flopped in your arms, standing in between your legs while her arms wrapped around your waist, "I’m so proud of you" she mumbled, her forehead resting against your own.
You matched her voice level with your answer, "Thank you. I love you"
"I love you too"
"I’m so fucking tired" you laughed, the iconic line of Lucía García leaving your lips. Mary with her famous laugh, picked you up and carried you, like so often, to bed, tugging you under the duvet after she had changed you in some comfortable sleeping clothes.
Before Mary even had the chance to join you, your soft snores filled the room, your body too exhausted to stay awake a minute longer. When she got cozy beside you, she pulled you close, cuddling your deep asleep figure.
Yet not going to sleep without giving you a good night kiss, so she pressed one against your forehead.
That night she dreamt about your gracefulness in the ballet and -
The beauty of the swan lake.

Hello. I'm sorry if this is sudden but I was wondering if you could make a platonic Neuvillette story with a little angst with the reader being the youngest of his 3 children and they were extremely stressed especially after Lyney and Lynette's trial along with Neuvillette and the readers mother getting divorced so their older brother and sister Elliot and Odette who were twins decided to take their little sibling out to get their mind off of everything but when Neuvillette realized his children left he went to the traveller, Paimon and the readers best friend and longtime crush Lyney for help and Neuvillette was not happy his children just left without saying anything. (If you're not okay with writing this that's completely alright and I wish you a good morning/afternoon or good night, you can also change Elliot and Odette's names if you want to)
Platonic!Neuvillette & teen!reader (ft. Uh... ocs, technically, I suppose)
[Warnings]: Spoilers for the Fontaine archon quest, and death
[Notes]: Apologies, but I removed the Lyney part, as I only write platonic characters. I hope you understand!!
—————
-> Too much.
-> This has all been too much for you.
-> Everything feels like it's happening at once.
-> At first, it had been bearable. As heartbreaking as your parents' divorce was, you and your siblings had long since noticed them falling out of love, and were already expecting it.
However, what you weren't expecting was the long custody battle that took place afterward. Frankly, you didn't understand why either of your parents cared so much, as you weren't particularly close with them. Normally, you, Elliot, and Odette spent most of the time locked away in your rooms, instead of really interacting with your parents.
Regardless, all of the paperwork and court cases were really annoying and stressful.
And as soon as you thought you had gotten a break, everything falls apart again.
—————
-> Lyney and Lynette's Magic Show was supposed to be a form of relaxation, after all of the stress you've been enduring.
You were incredibly excited. Your good friend, Cowell, had even managed to secure you and your siblings front row seats!
The actual performance itself was spectacular, too! Each act leaving you inching further away from your seat, eyes sparkling.
...Until the finale— where the water tank snapped from its bindings and came crashing down upon the 2nd box— with an all-too-familiar mask floating along the rapidly spreading water.
Your heart sank immediately as the theater fell silent. Cowell, Lyney and Lynette's assistant, had been murdered. Not only that, but a girl had gone missing, too— leading your mind back to several old cases. You were now a first-hand witness to the serial disappearances case.
—————
-> You didn't even get any time to mourn before the court case began. And you managed to barely hold it together throughout the case.
Elliot and Odette were incredibly worried. They weren't particularly close with Mr. Cowell, but they know you were friends with him, and given how you've basically been teetering on the edge of a breakdown for the past couple weeks, the twins weren't sure how much their baby sibling could take.
Safe to say, as soon as the trial is over, the twins practically drag you out of the Opera Epiclese; more than eager to empty their wallets to take everyone's minds off of the recent tragedy.
In the end you all book a few hotel rooms, and decide it'd be best to just stay in for a while.
—————
-> To be frank, it takes Neuvillette quite a while to notice his children have disappeared— after all, none of you are particularly close, and he has a lot of paperwork to go through— especially now.
By the time he does notice, it has already been a few days. He tries to remain calm about it, but by the time dinner rolls around and still no one's home, Neuvillette can't help but begin worrying. Where were you all?
Again, Neuvillette tries to wait it out, but the longer you're gone, the more he worries. Usually, whenever you, or your siblings, left for longer than a day, you'd tell him first.
So, it only makes sense that when he manages to pass the Traveler on his morning stroll, he immediately asks them to search for you.
You best bet papa Neuvillette is happy to see all three of his children return home on the same day. Albeit he still lectures you about your unannounced leave.
Completely worth it, though.
—————
[A/N]: I was planning to add some dialogue after that last blurb, but I've been procrastinating on this for quite a while, and I wasn't sure what else to add, this was super fun to write, regardless!!!

Luka Couffaine Notes - All That Remained
So, I think I see what issue I've had with Luka that I don't with Kagami. And, I ask your forgiveness for the blasphemy I'm about to speak. But you know what they say, right? Better to ask forgiveness than permission. So, let's crack into this.
With all due respect to Luka, he's a decent character in concept. However, from what I've seen, he's dreadfully bland. It's honestly hilarious seeing what a far cry he is in show versus what the fanon is. I've known this fact, but it really isn't until rewatching the older seasons that I see what my issue is. He was really just made to be for Marinette. He is the typical love interest catered to be for the main lead.
Now, there's nothing wrong with the original intention of a character being a love interest. One of my favorite characters, Sally Acorn, was originally intended to be a love interest for Sonic in the Archie Comics. However, for those that read the comics and know her, she became so much more. It's honestly arguable that the world of those comics was built for Sally and not Sonic. Sally became such a big part of the comics and her role was incredible, but she was still intended to be Sonic's love interest. Same goes for Kagami. She is a love interest for Adrien and rival to Marinette, but she feels so much more fleshed out. Like Sally, she's utilized so much more than Luka, which is a shame.
Luka, for all the potential he has, is nothing more than the would-be gold medal. He comes in to offer emotional support and be the rock for the main leads, but mostly Marinette. He is perfect for her, is everything she needs him to be. Day on the ice rink? He's a professional skater. Having trouble with your feelings? Shoulder to cry on and advice giver. She's feeling down and needs a pick me up that the girls can't give her? Enter stage right, Luka.
We see this even in their akumatizations. Luka is akumatized because of Marinette. It is only ever because of Marinette. Kagami did have her share of akumatizations because of Adrien, but for different reasons. Wanting a rematch, Lila, and Adrien lying. And let's not forget the cloud titan that was due to Marinette, not Adrien. Then there's Luka who was akumatized because of either an injustice to Marinette or wanting the fucking truth. (I'm not counting Migration. You all can fuck off with that. That was just bad writing all around that fucking episode.)
Doubling back on the bit about fleshed out. We see more with Kagami about who she is, her struggles, and so much more. We even see her GASP grow as a person. Whereas we have Luka. The man who is always kind, caring, protective, understanding, and patient. Well, that's all fine and all, but what else? What are his flaws? What are his weaknesses? What makes him human? I'm honestly reminded of the scene in Barbie the Nutcracker with the Rat King reading on the Sugar Plum Fairy and just being like "That's it?" Or in Swan Lake when Odette asks "What else?" and prince asshole asks "What else is there?"
You know, it kinda makes sense that when I see canon Luka, I just laugh. I don't see a character like I used to. I see a character with potential relegated to a glorified plot device. He only ever served as a way to advance the plot, which is a fucking sin. If Kagami was allowed to be important later on (which I get for what season 5 was) why couldn't we get that with Luka? I would have loved to have seen more than just a glorified plot device and, I wager, almost falls into the everyman trope. He is ordinary at the time we meet him. The one bit of normal in Marinette's life that we all honestly became attached to. Well, most of us anyway. Makes sense given his borderline blank slate personality of generic good traits.
It also makes sense why I latched onto the Luka in fanon. The entire fandom, all of y'all, make Luka such an interesting character. And I, for one, thank you all. We see more with these characters that don't get the spotlight, especially with Luka. It's amazing seeing what we do with him with the meager template provided by the show. Thank you.

I started this yesterday, but needed to walk away from it for a while before I could finish it…
@a-witch-named-crow, this is a big enough topic that I'm pulling it into it's own post, because I can't imaging fitting it all into a reply. I'm also going to put most of it under the cut, because I'm going be very frank about my chronic pain and my relationship with it, and I know that can be a bit much for some people.
I was diagnosed with CRPS when I was a sophomore in high school, this was long enough ago that it had a different name and the only possible treatment options would have involved taking me out of high school to send me to CHOP, or Mayo, or the Cleveland Clinic for intensive physical therapy in the slim hopes that it would normalize the pain. This really crushed me for a little bit. I was one of those kids who sort of was defined by being a good student, I couldn’t imaging my life if I interrupted school in anyway. I had also been told that I should stop dancing, given that it was likely the cause of the pain, and would surely only make it worse. But I had just been cast as Odette in Swan Lake, I was going into Junior year with a heavy class load, I had been promoted to section leader in the marching band, and I was not ready to slow down.
So I decided at 15 that if there were such slim chances of treatment working I wasn't going to put anything on hold for my pain. At the time it wasn’t too bad, I would have flair ups where it was bad, but a normal day was maybe a 2-3 on the scale. I could manage may life with that. I think that was what really set the stage for my relationship with my pain. Once I decided that I wasn't going to slow down I kind of turned it into a motivator. A lot of things came to be about doing things despite my pain. I took great pride in doing everything my able bodied friends were able to do, and sometimes more, despite my pain. That drove me for about 4 years until I was in college, and the other shoe finally dropped.
When things got really bad my junior year of college and I finally actually sought treatment I was severely depressed and suicidal because of the pain. But luckily I already had the diagnosis, which is usually the hard part, and in the intervening four years the treatment options had really changed. I was finally able to get some treatment, both opioid and non-opioid pain medicine, started physical therapy, bio feedback, acupuncture, the whole 9 yards. But the habit was already there, the relationship had already been formed. I have struggled since with admitting how much pain I’m in, and letting myself take the time I need to really manage it, but I’m so used to letting it push me. I’m better at it now almost 10 years later, but I can still fall back into that habit when I have something like a deadline to meet.
I did also learn how to use my pain in my craft. Around the same time as my pain was getting bad I was really developing my traveling skill with Oisin as my teacher. I found my pain was something that I could use to help me in that. With a lot of practice I was able to sort of let my pain wash over me until I wasn't aware of anything else, and then I could let go of my body easier. It was like I could dive down deep into the pain, go through it, and step out into the Otherworlds. I've gotten so good at this method that on particularly bad pain days I’ve found this method to be incredibly fast. There’s been some struggle over the years with not using this skill to avoid my pain, but it has simultaneously really helped me to shift my mindset about my pain as see it as a useful tool rather than as an adversary or a detriment.
From there I started to think about how else I could use my pain in witchcraft and in my religion. I sling a nasty curse because I share my pain liberally when necessary. But I also have a whole ritual that I undertake as part of my devotion to Brona where I take on some of the pain from others, lighten their load. Because what’s a little more when I know I can manage it?

you've unlocked a rothbart crush from my childhood i completely forgot i had... thank you... and odette/rothbart is so INCREDIBLE, FASCINATING, NOVEL! precious to me. i tried to look thru ur tags but did not find like, a synopsis of how u envision that happening? so how do u envision that happening? if u dont mind me asking :3c
I hoped to draw some of the key scenes to give you the insight, but it seems that my schedule isn’t currently fit for this. Sadly.
So, there is a very short answer: it took a lot of work, time and dead nervous cells. The latter goes mostly for Odette.
For as long as they were on the Lake they could not have formed a proper romantic relationship, this is absolutely impossible due to the circumstances. But they could still make some personal bond, even though slightly twisted and antagonistic, the “frenemy” kind of thing, and therefore create the ground for forming a normal relationship afterwards, when they’re married and have matching interests.
In my opinion this is very much possible, taken how these characters are written. I mean, Odette is a sweet, endearing, soft and gentle pain in the ass that can flip your world up and down for how keen she is in getting what she wants. And Rothbart is both a dark bloody disaster and the Einstein in the fields of magic and running things, wether it’s a kingdom or a fanfare show. Both are ironic and sarcastic clots of energy integrated into their overall calm demeanor but revealed if need be. Perfect.
Furthermore, as egotistical and stark his actions and character may appear, they don’t make him the ultimate evil, only for William’s supporters and family, maybe. The only  thing that distinguishes Rothbart from any other noble people is him knowing magic
So maybe, maybe, with time, they’d manage to make good relationship and family, but only with time, and only when the circumstances change from that they’ve been like on the Lake
I mean, initially Rothbart had zero interest in her as a person, she was naught but a tool for him to get what he wants with impunity, so he couldn’t have been genuinely sympathetic or caring when it’d come to picking on her.
And initially for Odette he was naught but an enemy. I mean the mortal enemy kind of thing
She didn’t see her father die, but it’d be perfectly clear for her that did die. It’d be perfectly clear what kind of role she played in the coup.
Key and minor at the same time
Actually i have an intention to somewhen discuss the issue of the movie not following the rules it itself had set in its beginning, and what it could have been once it followed these rules. But for now, to clarify myself I’d like to point out just that the writers were trying to sit both on the chair of realism and the chair of a fairy tale
And, appealing to the realistic one, I’d like to say that Rothbart wouldn’t have laid all his hopes on Odette’s will
He was not just an aristocrat coming from the kingdom he wishes to take, but the chancellor, which not only gives him access to the court and all his old acquaintances and connections, but provides him impressive amount of experience as a politician, economist and diplomat. Even being banished, he still would have kept some of them, and, most importantly, used them
So, by the time he kidnapped Odette, he’d have comparably firm basis of support in the kingdom, which would allow him to both wait long enough and keep the situation hanging in the air in one case, and to go in and take the power right away in another
The only reason the first option is much, much more appealing is that in feudal order you better do stick to the linage. Common people viewed the monarch as a viceroy of god on earth, and therefore the only legitimate ruler is the heir to the currently royal house. So if you don’t by blood belong to this linage, your position is.. quite shaky. Maybe there will be a riot. Or maybe not and it will go fine and dandy. Or there may be a major bloodshed
But once you marry the legitimate heir, you can avoid slaughtering your taxpayers people
They both understand this. They both know that the only thing that would change depending on her decision is the the number of complications Rothbart would face with proving the legitimacy of him taking the throne. But most importantly, the risk of bloodshed, which considerably decreases once Odette accepts the proposal
But there’s the thing, responsibility
Once she accepts right away, she commits the betrayal. She’d betray the memory of her father, her family, her pride, her kingdom, which is both the legacy of her father and her responsibility as an heir.
But the longer she declines, the weaker Rothbart’s control over the situation becomes
I believe it’s clear that he is not the only one drooling over the opportunity to take the empty throne and make their house the reigning one, to set it above all others. His alliances may be firm, but people don’t really fancy hanged up situations and loss of opportunities. And once he does lose control, the bloodshed is inevitable. The only issue is wether it will be within the walls of the palace only
Odette knows it as well as he does. That life won’t wait for her to make up her mind
Which makes her torn apart between her personal good and her country’ good. Which is, in fact, enough of a reason for her to accept Rothbart’s proposal even without him pushing. Initially she’d, indeed, be seeking for the ways to free herself, either by trying to physically get away or to fool Rothbart, maybe trying to haggle with him at some point, but in the end of the day, she’d still have to make the choice and take responsibility for any of the two decisions.
And here is the second thing, time
Rothbart, being the wise and very patient old asshole he is, knows it’s just a matter of time and he just has to wait for it. So there is literally no need to push her. And he would not even really wish to push her, for it would only worsen her antagonistic attitude. I mean he wouldn’t like to get a knife under his ribs in his sleep after a wedding night, right?
Again, initially he didn’t care for her at all
But the desire to at least try to get things done quicker (and enjoy his revenge just a tiny bit) would drive him into interacting with her. Mostly in the way of picking on her and toying with her
Odette does make an impression though. There are certain things to respect her for, certain things to like, certain things to be curious about. It’s unwise to speak of true romantic interest on his side at this point, but there may be some sympathy for her, which would lead him to pay her more and more attention. As much as her own attitude towards him would allow
With Odette being all alone, having nothing to do, sooner or later she will get used to his monologues, and there will be a point when she’d start piping up just to try piss him off. Which would give him room to make a pause in this routine and give her a few days to enjoy her space, and, as a little bonus, realise how he really makes her days by just letting her have a daily intellectual acid-filled badass banters. There will be moments for him to provide her some more things to make her feel better, such as books or a few games maybe. I bet he plays cards magnificently
But no matter how possibly comfortable she can get around him, and no matter what he does for her to feel so, for as long as she is his prisoner there is no way their relationship can be deprived of antagonism. There is no way she’d trust him, or genuinely sympathise with him. She might be suffering being deprived of social interactions, but she remembers who’s to blame for it, you know. She will come to respect him, greatly, both as a person and as a foe, but respect doesn’t really have that much to do with sympathy. It only serves as a basis for it.
At that point there is no way he can get to her through personal connection.
But, there’s the third thing, experience gap
Once he’s careful enough with that tiny little bit of sympathy Odette will have for him, he still could do so through the sexual one. Keeping in mind that plenty of time has passed, all the passions has settled down in a complacent stubborn slumber, and that for Rothbart her liking of him at that point is naught but an additional bonus, even though very flattering and pleasant, he will be damn patient and careful
And he does have the ground there
With everything in her life now depending on him, with him being the second key-importance figure for her now, (read: all her thoughts and intentions are somehow linked to him), all he needs to do is just to draw some of these thoughts this way. Being mature, experienced and quite charismatic, charming man... Rothbart can do that. Even though It might take even longer than making that tiny first step of at least getting used to each other
For Odette it will be catharsis though
Now not just she’s torn between what she desperately doesn’t want to do and what she is ought to do, but also facing the fact that she feels attracted to a man who killed her father
And it can very possibly lead to uh
Pretty harsh things
And thoughtless actions
Which can possibly send both Rothbart and Odile rue the day he’s come up with that ingenious kidnapping plan of his
You know, actually, she could have avoided such situation, and keep the feeling at bay, not let it grow and bloom from all attention paid to it, if not prevent it from appearing at all
But there’s the fourth thing, maturity
Even being both emotionally and intellectually smart, Odette doesn’t really have the sense of responsibility but only the picture of it (that’s what the exposition of the movie suggests, basing both on fairy tale canons and on how the character acts like. I mean openly speaking of ruining the medieval arranged marriage AKA state contract in front of many people, worst of all from an ally country with which this contract was made, and therefore disgrace your medieval dad AKA your sovereign by showing everyone how poorly you were brought up by him is beyond irresponsible. Wars got started for even lesser flaws back then)
The whole thing is literally about growing up as a person, both Derek and Odette. Of taking responsibilities and obtaining control over themselves. Back at the day, she is indeed just a few steps from doing so, yet still is not there
Though I don’t really think that Rothbart’d heat things up to the point where they get laid, but he’d certainly give her a glimpse of what he is like in this guise. Maybe not once. Or not really subtly, either. What i do think is that around this time of directing things into the intimate field is when he’d start to develop something for her, to start liking her not only as a person but as a young woman
There are plenty of things to like there, let’s say. Odette is not only intelligent but also smart, keen, witty. Over all the time spent on the Lake she’d also become very inventive and calculating, forged in cat-mouse games with him and Odile, and patient, thanks to all the banters with him. I guess I don’t have to mention that she is very beautiful, also
And she has an overall endearing image
If Odile is pure evil of a devil with mind and heart of a martyr, Odette is a delightful, sweet little angel with an impish drive and rebelliousness
The one that corresponds with the one of his, really, even though his is that of a more mature one
They both are latent daredevils (or not so latent). Overall they have plenty in common
So yeah, he’d form some sort of infatuation for her. And at this point he’d be god damn interested in it becoming something more as they get married
And it rather would than not, why I’ve typed a lot above. Whether they do get married or not.. I don’t know, as well as how complicated this would be. Because Derek is still in the picture, no matter how useful it’d be to just forget about him. Whether Odette accidentally finds him on one of her desperate tries to escape while he roams the right forest in it's right part in the right season in the right month, week, day and hour, I don’t know still. Depends on the plot, as fell as the events that followed their meeting. What I can say is... that would be real awkward for her. I mean real awkward.
But, back to the marriage, sadly there would still be consequences, inevitably.
Odette may forgive him for imprisoning her, for it was only for the matters of the coup and not his personal joy. She, if gets to know of the details, after some long-long time may even close her eyes on the connection between his little bonus-revenge, on that “everything you own and love will be mine” thing, and the marriage with him quite literally owning her. But for killing her father? I doubt it
Even if we imagine that she would, would he, now that he cares for her feelings? Making the cause of your loved one’s suffering is hell of a burden, and doing this mindfully makes it dreadful, even though done prior to getting close with each other
And while Odette will get over what happened with time, live her life serving her people and put some of the remaining pain aside in a dark corner of her mind, leaving the place for the better future instead, Rothbart until the end of his days will be stuck with this shit. It won’t crush him, for he is rather wise and he won’t get fixated on the past, especially when his actions weren’t some kind of mistake, he’d rather concentrate on being a good king, husband and father.
But the knowing of what exactly he has done will never leave him, and haunt him, at times. At times like, for example, William’s birthday, it would be exceedingly palpable
To sum up
It’s a thing with an extremely rocky start and an outcome with the firm union of the two snarky daredevil dumbasses, the one cute and subtle and the other harsh and sardonic, which has a very bittersweet and kind of heartbreaking connotation to it

Swan Lake is a classic for a reason. Beautiful story. Amazing music. Incredible choreography. I do wish Ireland had... Literally any other ballet playing. Our cultural scene is incredibly stagnant. Just Swan Lake and the Nutcracker. Anyways this is musing from the production I saw today (technically yesterday)
The set for this production was very Greek (???) to me, especially in Act 1. (Not in the sense of the phrase but actually like Greece). There was a lot of pillars, and marblesque seats and fancy pots full of flowers. The lake was a lake in the even acts and the Act 3 ballroom is very plain. However the costume design was normal, which is to say they could be from anywhere in western Europe. But they were all sparkly so that's a plus
Act one. That's a pas de trois. You cannot convince me that that dance with the bestie and the two girls is not a valid Grand Pas de Trois. A dance together, everyone gets a solo, then they are together again. Swan Lake says polyamoruos rights. And this polyamory really want a fourth, but Seigfried keeps being like "nah it's alright, you go ahead I'm going to stay here". He is NOT interested in their advances.
Random half-joking headcannons aside, the crossbow was like really pathetic. It was pure white with what looked like delicate carvings and gems and I genuinely thought it was a pickaxe for a second before I remembered the plot. It's just.... My dude that's not going to hurt a fly it looks like your mum bought you a nice decoration. Also, if your mum gives you a crossbow in the first scene I expect you to have shot it at the evil wizard by the last one. Chekhov's gun,,,, or what I like to call it, Seigfried's stupid little crossbow
Anyway MIME STRIKES BACK. We all know that ballet is incredibly tied to mime as an artform and so the only way I'll my communicating the concept of marriage from now on is by laying one hand over the other and giving loaded looks. Anyways ballet is so silly and I love it
Act 2. Cygnets. I love cygnets. Give me more cygnets. I've also performed a lot of act 2 so the music is a little burned into my brain. Watching it made my feet hurt from remembering standing still for 3 solos
Anyways, here we meet Seigfried's first, but certainly not last, cringfail moment. He is the lands worst marksman. God help us all.
Also he proves himself to be an absolute wife guy. Odette has this lovely solo and he's just on the sidelines giving her heart eyes.
Act 3 <3 I've said it before and I'll say it again. I LOVE WHEN BALLET IS CLOSER TO ITS FOLK DANCE ROOTS. Character dance? Yummy. 3/5 of the folk dances were character. AND TARANTELLA. I LOVE SPAINISH DANCES. Rad grade 4 dance f (maybe. Possibly) is my favorite dance I have ever done for a ballet exam. If you take nothing of this watch RAD grade 4 dance f. The tamberines in the fourth dance were clearly missing their cymbals though. You can hear the dancers pointe shoes clunking against the stage, you would be able to hear the tamberines. And when they smack the thing there was the merest clink. Again as I have done the tarantella in rad grade 4, I can tell you that dancing with tamberines is LOUD
And then we have Odile. My boy you're so fucking stupid. I love you, but you are good of heart, dumb of ass. But the dance was breath taking. Of course. Fouttetes<3 and then Seigfried's pirouettes à second<3 I do think the ballerina fell out of the last fouette so she might not have done the full 32, or if she did she needs to work on her technique of stopping. Show stopping though. And? Then? At the end of the grand pas de deux????? The way Seigfried gripped Odile's hand and pressed it to his cheek. Raw devotion. It made my heart wrench. My boy is just so fucking stupid.
It's also really interesting to me that the Grand Pas de Deux goes to Odile. Odette does not get the dignity other tragic heroines get. The main dance in her story doesn't even go to her. She doesn't get the fouettes. Her love, her spotlight, her story was stolen from her. I think that's what made this veiwing of swan lake different from my earlier ones, as I understand the structure of ballets now. Also this one I'm seeing live
Act 4. May have laughed when Wizard Man crawled off stage. He was so wet and pathetic. Can neither confirm or deny.
Alright back to the idea of devotion. Seigfried to his last breath looks to the sky for Odette. He tries to give her what he gave Odile by mistake, his declaration of undying love. He presses he head to her hands with a desperation. He would try a thousand times over if they had the time. Odette for her part forgives him. She raises him from the ground when he feels the weight of his sins pressing down on him. She does not hold a grudge, but that doesn't change that she is scared. She knows Rothbart is coming, and the other swans are anxious with her. But they stay together, because that's what love is, right? Staying by someone's side, through good and bad, and forgiveness.
I'll be honest, I was not expecting a kiss. Not every romance needs one yanno. Sometimes pressing one's cheek to their loved ones hands communicates just as well as a smackeroonie. And if someone never kissed me but did the hand thing, I'd believe they liked me (note to self, possible solution to icks the idea of kissing gives you.). But then they did kiss and :D tbf it's implied that they are both super dead and on the way to heaven but that's a happy end in my books
Anyways watch swan lake. It good.

Forget, Focus, Feign
(a continuation of this!)
Mourning the loss of his best friend was the only thing he felt capable of doing at the moment, but that wouldn't be possible with the role and the environment he was supposed to represent: Heaven was the realm of ultimate bliss, the final destination for pure, good-natured souls that had finally gotten their reward.
It was in no way a place for negative emotions, it was senseless to have them in the most pleasant location in all creation, which was linked to the main purpose of two of the three Seraphims, Odette and Clara: to keep everyone content and explain any questions the new winners might have was sure to be exhausting, even if they didn't show it.
They'd have a right to lay there and whine about their incredibly restricting job that had them showcase an uplifting personality for everyone to feel comfortable around: but they had their own issues, and he had been there to listen to them when they had become too much to handle.
Because of Alastor's stoic, yet crude judgement and honesty, most angels looked to him for guidance or small talk, though the latter would be less common, and avoided: the angelic being was not an expert with behaviour in social situations that were not work-related or meant to serve a precise purpose, as such, most of the conversations that weren't a part of that category fell short. Regardless, those qualities had turned out to make him a great listener and problem solver, taking the more logical route while still considering the emotional side of things.
He had a job to do and he was going to fulfill it, no matter the tragedies that befalled him that were to be kept under the rug, which had become almost a natural response for his body and mind, to block out anything that might come in the way of efficiency.
The next day, the meeting room, though physically portrayed as having three empty seats, had proceeded with normal regularity, untainted by the banisment down below of their former colleagues: that was the course of things, Alastor had learned, in and out of his position as a member of the council, professionalism was the main flow that represented those meetings.
For the topic of the fallen trio to be talked about in an extremely brief manner would have left anyone else appalled and with a ping in their chest, but the fellow holding the physical attributes of a deer remained unfazed: topics of great controversy weren't to be acknowledged for more than need be, especially it wouldn't contribute to their assembly in a benificial way.
Carmilla, the head Seraphim, sat solemly with her two daughters beside her: she had retained balance for eons and would continue to do so at any cost, and he respected that, as well as her powerful yet threatening figure. She was created to fill that role, it was obvious that she would convey that perfectly, raising her two students to do the same: they were the model to be admired and to act like.
To the right side of the corner desk was Zestial, one of the oldest angels to inhabit the skies: his attire exued importance, as well as his usage of older lingo that hinted to his vast cultural knowleadge: white and grey were the pattern of his robes, and his skull was a bright yellow with his numerous, white eyes, the brightness could have caused blindness, as such, it was greatly advisable to not look in his direction.
Though it was called ‘the council’ it was nowhere near as important as the actual angelic council, containing the arch angels, one of which had been absent for a concerning amount of time. Although it was second to the proper advisory body, it served as the voice for the winners and to discuss community issues or betterment: while the higher ups busying themselves with problems of a higher caliber, possible threats to the community and disturbance of the peace.
There were some small, lively discussions, usually brought to the table by the young, rebellious woman that wouldn’t be returning to her position: the atmosphere was more stiff and boring, and a few of them were on the verge of falling asleep. A minor difference, though the room reflected that clearly, even if no one could understand or grasp it yet, the order was shaking: although Carmilla might have been aware of what, which would explain her avoidance of the matter.

Chapter 5. We have stucky, we have stevesambucky friendship, we have a new place to live and strange being a good guy because tony definitely ranted at him. Also, we're beginning the creepy part of the plot. I have decided that sam will be one of the main platonic characters in this story because I love sam.
fun fact: I used to be a creepypasta writer! Going back to my roots here, hehe.
Tumblr media
Things had stated changing, for better or worse, much sooner than I had been prepared for - but was anyone, ever, really ready for the next big step? Certainly not me - the view that greeted me after I'd finished my shift at Jeremy's was peculiar and unexpected, so I froze, eyebrows high at the two super-soldiers parked, once again, illegally, right in front of the entrance door.
"Hi, doll," Bucky was reclined against his boyfriend comfortably, his bike standing a pace behind Steve's, who nodded companionably, a sheepish grin on his face.
"G'day," I nodded, eyeing them warily. "I think I know where this is going..."
"No, no, nothing like that," both men frantically waved their hands around, Steve coming up close to approach me slowly. "You're not in trouble. I came out here to say thanks," giving a sappy look to the grouch that was his boyfriend, Steve reached into his pocket and handed me a slip of paper. "Just, uh..."
"Those are our phone numbers. Don't hesitate to give either one of us a call if someone bothers you," Bucky took over the stammering blonde, shaking his head at the soft blush that blossomed on the good captain's face. The brunette wrapped an arm around Steve's shoulders with a shy smile of his own. "Or if you, I don't know, need someone to carry your groceries or something," he snorted. "The punk wouldn't leave it alone until we came out personally to thank you, the sap."
The laughter bubbled up from my chest as I grabbed and pocketed the paper, throughly amused and at the endearing gesture. "Sure, thanks."
"And, uh," Bucky's eyes briefly looked to the side. "We'd appreciate if you keep the status of our relationship to yourself for now. We're not, like, officially out yet."
I froze in place, mouth falling open. Surely they were aware that anybody with a functional pair of eyes could see that they were much more than 'good, lifelong friends'. "No problem, guys. Lemme know if anyone gives you shit about it though, this place," I gestured to the café behind me, "is strictly paparazzi and homophobe-free."
Steve's grin grew even more genuine. "Yeah, we heard all about it from Tony and Stephen. Said 'twas the only place they go these days."
I wasn't aware of that. "It's the paps, isn't it?" I remembered Tony's remarks.
Bucky shook his head, the metals of his prosthetic arm whirring as it recalibrated. "Not only. The public hasn't had the best reaction to a man goin' out with a man," the brunette looked away to the side, where Steve's face had fallen considerably. "And Tony's an eccentric rich man. We're jus' two soldiers. The US Army won't be too happy if we... Came out," both men were crestfallen yet determined.
I had a hunch nothing would be able to separate the two - seeing as not even seventy-odd years and brainwashing and ice couldn't keep the captain and his sarge apart, I doubted that a few government weasels could successfully do the job. Even so, it was unpleasant, to say the least, to see them deny themselves something that technically was perfectly fine in the 21st century.
I chewed on my lip, gathering my wits. "I've clocked out, I can tell you this as a friend- as a person. You don't owe the army jack shit. They do not own you, you are your own person that they experimented their German knockoff steroids on. Respectfully, fuck that shit." I firmly stated my opinion, figuring that there should have been at least someone that told Steve that he is more than his star-spangled uniform and giant metal frisbee.
The blonde scrunched his eyebrows together, fingers gripping onto his belt until the knuckles went white, the hard line of his jaw set firm.
Bucky laugh took me by surprise. "Agreed, doll. I'm too old to be hiding in back alleys and shit," he clapped on his boyfriend's shoulder. "Although I'm happy enough with just not going to prison for bein' in love with this idiot."
"Jerk," Steve's responding pout was downright adorable now that I knew the circumstances surrounding their relationship.
Which wasn't exactly surprising. As a barista, I knew my fair share about my regulars' love lives, their jobs, their kids. The tea was almost always piping hot. "Bye, boys," I smiled at them warmly, throwing a glance at the time, adjusting the strap of my bag for comfort. "Stay outta trouble!"
Steve scrambled for his bike, having noticed my pointed gesture. "Sorry, didn't mean to hold you back. There, I have a spare helmet," he gestured behind him. "I'll give you a ride."
"There's no way in Hell I'm getting on that death trap!" I shouted cheerfully, walking briskly towards my second job, hiding a laugh in the warmth of my scarf as two very offended motorcycle-loving gay fossils sped past me, making truly incredible amounts of noise. Good for them.
Odette was content to let me rummage around the bodega without showing herself more than necessary, taking her appointments and doing- well, witch stuff, I guess, only coming out to poke at the various jars for ingredients.
"Star, I have a proposition for you," right before closing time, Odette's voice filled out the store with its low drawl. "A good friend of mine owns an apartment building, not far from here actually, and one tenant recently moved out. It's a safe space for those who are different," she enunciated the last word, fixing it with a pointed stare. "She's not overly fond of total strangers coming to live there. The rent is reduced and the apartment itself is slightly bigger and more fashionable than yours..."
"Where's the catch?" I found myself interrupting her. I wouldn't lie: the reduced rent and increased size of the apartment did interest me, as well as the probability of a kinder, more involved landlord. My current one was - not the best, but such was life in the NYC.
"There are a few rules to follow, rules that might seem strange at first but they'll make sense in time. And your neighbors might be also a little... Unusual," Odette carefully studied my face for any signs of displeasure.
I sighed.
And then I sighed some more as I was signing my new lease in a few days' time, having spoken with Porter, my new landlord, and his boyfriend who had claws and fangs- after so much time spent around Odette's, I didn't even blink. The couple liked me enough to extend a secure but flexible offer and some furniture to choose from the attic where they kept the spares.
I quite liked the large, vintage couch I placed next to the wide bow windows in the living room. The floors were hardboard and well-kept, the walls a nice, homely shade of green and Porter didn't mind any new holes in them that might arise from hanging up decorations. I scheduled a thrift crawl at the next possible opportunity, happy with the "good employee" bonus Odette had given me after I sealed the deal.
My stuff was boxed up, a sleepless night and a call to a begrudging Jeremy to have a couple of days off to move; I was, thankfully, not late on my schedule and all that I had left was to rent a car to move the boxes of my things and the few pieces of furniture I had decided to keep - my haul in Porter's attic had been incredibly rewarding and my new apartment had all the basics to make it look like a warm, inviting bohemian home in a while.
My phone rang suddenly, startling interruption to the romcom I was watching as I ate my last lunch in my old apartment. "Hello?" I answered the number without looking.
"Hi, doll," Bucky's voice rang out cheerful. "A little witch told me you were moving. I thought you might need a hand?"
I blanked momentarily, the thought of enlisting two very busy super-soldiers to haul ten boxes and two endtables worth of stuff not having crossed my mind at all. "Is this the moment when you stop by my house just to unattach and put your prosthetic arm somewhere and leave?" I asked, hearing distinctive snickering - several more people were with him.
The cheer in his voice blossomed into a full belly laugh. "You're funny," he teased me. "And thanks for the idea. But no, I have a room full of men that have nothing better to do but get on my nerves. Might as well make 'em useful," his accented drawl thickened the more we spoke. Muted cheers rang out in the background.
"Uh, sure," who was I to look a gift horse in the mouth? I rattled off my address and warned them I didn't have a car, after which Bucky assured me it will be taken care of. The last remaining knick-knacks packed away, I went down to take out the trash, and returned to four people standing in front of my apartment building, all except one unrecognisable in their civilian clothes. "Hello," I waved at them, side-eyeing the tallest, grumpiest man of the bunch.
Stephen Strange was there, looking around curiously, hands in the pockets of his plain grey hoodie. I had already forgotten how normal he looked without his robes, and, frankly speaking, I preferred him like that. His title and the attire that came with it were quite intimidating.
"Hey there," a dark-skinned man who I recognised to be the Falcon, raised his hand. I had not met him yet. "I'm Sam, Sam Wilson. You must be the Star we're helping?" His quick once-over and the tilt to his lips; the ease with which he flirted had me brandishing smirks of my own. I led them all upstairs, Stephen's silence being just so loud. Sam, however, had no such reservations. "So, you're a witch, right?" Wow, subtlety was his middle name.
"Yes, I'll show you my broomstick," I deadpanned, wiggling my eyebrows at him with a grim look.
"Woah woah," Sam raised his hands as the three men behind us snickered loudly. "What happened to 'how are you? let's have dinner sometime'?"
I did my best imitation of an evil cackle as I let them through my front door. The four newcomers looked around my nearly empty apartment with muted interest before zeroing in on the pile of things in the corner: a few pieces of furniture and nearly taped boxes. Should be a walk in the park for four men.
A hand on my arm pulled me from the stupor of observing Sam, Bucky and Steve act like a well-oiled trio, bantering and teasing each other as they discussed how to best move the things.
"Look," Stephen Strange had all the appearance of a chastised puppy. "I wanted to apologize for my behaviour that day. I was out of line," the low notes in his voice made the appearance of the apology being somewhat reluctant. Tony probably put him to it after our little burger run.
Irregardless, I wasn't looking to make any enemies. "Me too, I was under stress - not that I'm using it as an excuse," to give where it's due, I nodded at the sorcerer, immediately awestruck by the easy, boyish smile that stretched on his lips.
"You are strong," he added. "If you would like to learn our ways, we would welcome you." There was a spark in his eyes, something belonging to man that respected and collected knowledge. My own respect for him grew immensely just from that one thing.
"I'll think about it," I offered amicably, however, I still leaned heavily towards a negative answer to that particular proposition. I liked my current way of life.
Strange's grin made a momentary second appearance, until Sam's voice rang loudly: "Fire in the hole, Wizard-man," causing the former to groan loudly and look at me.
"Think about your new place for a second," he spoke, briefly touching out fingertips. As soon as that was over, a golden circle with my new living room on the other side of it appeared quietly, Strange's hands immediately going back into his pockets after that. I sighed and pointed the men into it, stepping in a second after. The sorcerer wasn't far behind. "You could learn that, too, you know," he added wryly, having seen my look of mild envy directed at him.
"I think I'll be good with having the 'pissed off the sorcerer Supreme and lived' pass for now," I retorted with an eyeroll, turning around to stare him down.
He had the decency to look somewhat sheepish, at least. "I'm not like my predecessor," his words were chosen carefully. "And, to be honest, I have no clue as to why your... Boss is so hostile towards me- us," Strange looked around the room before unceremoniously beelining for the couch and plopping down on it.
"Not to be a gossip," I started, slightly intrigued. "But Odette and some lady she called ancient had mad beef," I slipped into casual language easily, trying to recall the details of Odette's, quite often jumbled, stories. "Sounded almost like territorial disputes," I shrugged. "And the apprentices Odette took on before me found themselves in all kinds of compromising situations," I chewed on my lip. "Like the Arctic."
Strange rubbed his face with a noisy groan, large hands doing nothing to mask the resignation and slight embarrassment.
I focused on the thin, red scars on his hands - they had to have been something serious, the way slight tremors betrayed the deteriorating state of the nerves in his fingers. I frowned, quickly averting my gaze before he could catch me ogling him. The fact thag Stephen kept his hands in his pockets or covered by gloves at all times didn't go over my head.
He muttered something to himself, something that sounded like he was often forced to clean up his predecessor's mess. "I see," was the only thing he'd offered me, looking slightly pitiful and apologetic.
"Well," I started, noting the last of my stuff was about to be in its rightful place, "as long as you don't toss me into the ocean, I think we can coexist peacefully."
"Tony would kill me if I'd tried," Stephen groused.
"Probably," I agreed. "Considering the fact he hit on me, for you, it would make one hell of a lover's quarrel," my hand pointed towards the kitchen as Steve and Sam carried in the boxes aptly labeled "kitchen", looking around a place to put them down.
"Tony did what now?" Stephen's tone dropped, a wry smirk decorating his lips as he eyed me through his lashes.
"Don't ask me," I raised my palms, feeling my eyes widen. "He's chaos personified and Satan only knows what he's got on his mind."
That squeezed a laugh out of the tall man, followed by a fond, sappy smile as he looked out of my large, panoramic window, probably thinking of Tony himself. There was no doubt, Stephen Strange was utterly and throughly head over heels in love with Tony Stark. Good for them, good for them.
"A-and that's it," Bucky walked in, wiping his hands on a kitchen towel I'd provided them earlier. "I took some liberties and assembled the furniture, Steve is stacking the dishes as we speak," the brunette noisily plopped down next to me, arm carelessly thrown behind me on the back of the couch.
"Oh, um," I stammered, unused to such random gestures of kindness. "Thanks a lot, you saved me a day's worth of time and a backache," I smiled, scooting over to make some room for Sam.
"No problem, not like we had anything better to do than argue which part of the Lord of the Rings is the best," Wilson rolled his eyes, elbowing Bucky none-too-gently.
Bucky elbowed back, thus starting a horsing war between the two, causing me to scoot closer to Stephen as I attempted to avoid any flailing limbs; the sorcerer and I shared an identical, perplexed sigh as to how two grown men could easily bait each other into such juvenile behaviour.
Whatever. It was kind of endearing.
Steve emerged from the kitchen dusty but smiling, having heard the commotion, and quickly herded his guys into a semblance of decent behaviour before all of three of them left, leaving me and Stephen to go back to my old apartment and give the keys to it to the guard. That was done, too, and a portal from an alley behind my old building straight into my living room had me and Strange awkwardly hovering, saying out goodbyes and waving to each other as the golden circle rapidly shrunk in size and disappeared, golden sparks scattering across my living room carpet for a short second before they fizzled out, too.
I used the brief moment of respite to find the small piece of paper containing the rules Porter had insisted I read and take seriously; figuring it might be a good idea to give them a read before beginning to unpack, I popped open a bottle of soda, holding the itemized list written in neat cursive to my face.
The further I read, the further my eyebrows rose:
"1. Keep your door locked at all times.
2. If a person knocks on your door claiming to be the mail man, do not open the door under any circumstances. You are free to ignore the knocking - it only lasts a minute or so. After the person has left, you may open the door and check for any packages.
3. If Samantha from 3B visits you and asks you to babysit, you may do so at your personal discretion. Her twins are a handful and their daily habits are not for the ones with a weak stomach, however, they mean nothin ill and will not harm you in any way.
4. Do not use the elevator between the hours of 1 and 4 AM.
5. There are no apartments under number "7". If someone claiming to be from those apartments knocks on your door and requests entry, come up with a polite excuse to decline and send me a text message. I will take care of it.
6. There is no garden on the premises of this building. If a man approaches you, claiming to be a gardener, don't interact with him and simply walk away. He will leave you alone.
7. You may meet a girl in a polka-dot dress playing in the hallways or in the stairwell. This is Lucy. Always be polite to Lucy - you won't like what will happen if you're rude to her. She does not talk but she knows limited ASL and may request to visit you. Allow her in ONLY if you have fresh meat in your fridge (beef or mutton, preferably bloody). You might want to avoid seeing her eat, however, it might be very beneficial to make friends with Lucy. She knows a lot of things.
8. If, when taking the stairs, you encounter inconsistent numeration of the floors, such as floor 2 followed by floor 5 and etc, simply walk a flight back. It will sort itself out. The building is old and sometimes it gets confused.
Important notice: these rules apply to your guests as well. Please make sure to introduce and educate them on these matters. We will help as much as we can should a situation arise but ultimately, there are fates far worse than an untimely, however swift, death.
- Porter and Lance."
A slow, creeping dread began to gnaw at my nape, curling on like a cold snake deep in chest. As if laughing at me, the warm, welcoming embrace of the green walls and the toothy, wide smiles my landlords had given me encouraged my recently found sense of adventure, all of it mixing into a cacophony of exhilaration and unease, equally steadily driving my running brain insane.
I sighed again, immediately going to the box containing my altar and the rest of the protective items. So much for peace.

Nancy Drew Thoughts and Theories: She’s Back!
And by she I mean me! The true protagonist!
Hi everybody slightly-less-long time no see. As previously stated even though my faith in tv writers as we know it has been like completely destroyed, I have jumped back aboard the Nancy Drew train and can I just say I am so happy I did because season 3 has been WILD.
I’m not going to like totally recap the first seven episodes here because that would take way too long so I’m just going to give some general thoughts about the season so far and a few theories I have for where it might go in the second half.
Also can I just say it appears the writers have dropped the god awful voiceovers for good and thank God because things have progressed to the point where I hate voiceovers with a passion. Forward!
The main overarching mystery of season 3 is who is the demon behind the Frozen Hearts killings, and how does Temperance Hudson fit into it?
First off can I just say I absolutely love the work the costume/makeup department did on the freezer demon? (That’s his name btw, freezer demon. Frozen hearts killer is just too many syllables.) Like those creepy long-ass fingers, the teeth with no lip, the overall slightly scarecrow-esque aesthetic? You just don’t get this shit with cgi.
On a second note I love him as a villain but I don’t find him entirely threatening because of a theory I will get to later so mark this as a save spot. ***
Bess is learning MAGIC and I fucking called it all the way back in season one when she was in awe of Victoria, I was all “I want Bess to be her magical apprentice” God I’m a genius. So excited that one of the characters is finally developing supernatural abilities, and also holding out hope for George to manifest psychic powers but baby steps. Truth be told I can see Bess becoming incredibly powerful, especially if she’s going to reform the women in white. They’ll need someone to teach them, probably Bess, so she’s going to have to get pretty strong.
How fantastic would it be, just a quick side note, if Bess went down a similar path to Willow in Buffy and became ultra mega powerful and went to the dark side in a fit of rage and grief and the others had to unite to take her down somehow? I just think that would be awesome.
George and Nick! Oh my what to say about George and Nick. Separately they’re doing like pretty well. George confronted her birth dad about being a deadbeat, something I’ve been waiting on for ages, one Fan dad down three to go! (I feel like they can’t all suck. Like one of them has to be dead or redeemable or something.) How crazy would it be if Victoria came back from China with a new baby? It won’t happen but just saying. I always knew the George shortened lifespan thing would not be permanent, but it is nice to have that specter of impending doom lifted from her shoulders, even though I WILL miss Odette. Like Bess and George are cousins in the book so I didn’t love that she was falling for a ghost in George’s body, but I just thought it was SUCH a sweet and poignant ship. And God that scene where Bess is having to destroy the crystal and is sobbing you better believe I was also crying and I don’t normally cry at tv shows unless it’s about how much I hate it. So yeah George is doing pretty good, and I’m so excited we’re finally getting to learn more about her sisters because Jesse is amazing and I love her. Nick is doing considerably less good! Like yeah he’s finding a purpose and opening his youth center, he’s engaged, but as Addy so kindly pointed out, he never really dealt with any of his jail related trauma. Honestly I feel kind of bad because until the writers literally spelled it out for us I straight up kind of forgot that Nick went through so much (jail, Kate dying, Tiffany dying, murder suspect, supernatural Aglaeca target, etc) in such a short amount of time because he’s always just been rolling with it. I’m glad they reminded us all that Nick has indeed Been Through It and are going to take some time to explore that.
But Nick and George together??
Tumblr media
Oh my god don't hate me it’s not really that dramatic I promise. But season 2 was mostly pretty smooth sailing, and now in season 3 it seems like they’re having some kind of big fight every other episode. Episode 5 they have a big fight about Mr. Dad that doesn’t get resolved until next episode, and then episode 7 George refuses to call Nick as she’s possibly DYING and when she is ready to call him Nick has up and skedaddled on some sort of trauma side quest. I don’t know exactly where the show is in universe, but Nick and George have known each other for less than a year and they’ve already moved in together, blended their families, gotten engaged. One of the reasons Nick and George moved so fast is because of the shortened lifespan, combined with a honeymoon phase I feel. Now that George has her normal life expectancy back, even if they don’t break up (which I kinda feel they have to like just for a little while) I do expect them to put a pause on the engagement, just for a bit. I have some theories how that might go down to be posted later because it’s already 2 am and I have work tomorrow.
Ace had a storyline that made me cry tears of joy tbh, that thing with Mr. Bobbsey where Ace saw the blood on his hands and was immediately like “get out of my car”. If this were like any other show on the planet I guarantee you Ace would’ve been all ‘omg is that blood’ or something equally stupid and just given him a ride. But no, this is Nancy Drew and our characters have fucking brains in their head. So Ace kicked him out, solved the problem, low key stabbed his girlfriend in the back (RIP Amanda Bobbsey you deserved better) but hey man you do what you gotta do, and I enjoyed a morally challenging storyline where the character like makes the right moral decisions. It’s refreshing.
Maybe it’s because episode 7 was the last one I watched but God Carson and Ryan are straight up 2 of my current 3 favorite characters. Watching them as teenagers I was absolutely losing my mind, definitely in my top three favorite episodes ever. Their dad duo dynamic (say that three times fast) is beautiful, and comedic, and Carson doubling as a dad to Nancy and a dad to Ryan while simultaneously teaching Ryan how to dad? Poetic cinema. I don’t really think the Carson and Jean relationship is like built to last. I think it would be interesting to explore how much power prosecutors have in the legal system (i.e. pulling Ace’s plea bargain) and their differing philosophies could drive them apart. Also every time Ryan talks to Nancy about Lucy I start crying. Absolutely beautiful. Would it kill the writers to have like her ghost in the background during fucking one of those conversations? Apparently! But yeah no complaints.
Wait I lied I have one complaint. They really should deal better with that Ryan slept with George thing before Nick puts Ryan to work in a youth center. Like the writers will let George acknowledge it, see: conversation with her dad, but not Ryan for some reason. Like Nick. My dude. My guy. He literally low key groomed your fiancee as a teenager, had an affair with her, said he’d leave his wife for her, and you thought to yourself “I’m going to put him to work with kids”. Like don’t get me wrong I love Ryan, and (god forgive me) I am willing to move on from the sleeping with an underage girl thing because (A) it was different show runner and (B) the writers have worked hard to turn him around and redeem him, but it’s something I feel should be addressed you know?
Nancy Drew! Titular bitch. Kicking supernatural ass all over the town. Not going to a four year college, represent. I also didn’t go to a four year college at first, some of us got our general credits at our local community college. Although I do recall reading an interview sometime last year where the writers mentioned a potential post college time jump? So we’ll see if that’s completely wrapped up. Until then though she is pursuing the freezer demon with a vengeance! She’s also much more like emotionally stable this season, so hopefully no more Nancy sobbing alone in her room on her birthday. God that scene wrecked me.
Can I just say I’m in love with Temperance Hudson? Like I’ve been straight the last 22 years but I would marry her if given the chance. She is just so fucking funny, she’s a fun villain! The show hasn’t done a fun villain yet and I’m enjoying it. Every time she comes on screen I clap my hands maniacally and I can just list one liners of hers off the top of my head like it’s my job. “Auto correct is my nemesis.” about stealing Nancy’s blood: “I mean to be fair, she was done with it.” And God I’m so invested in her! I’m like really hoping that even though she’s obviously a villain right now, she’s one of those villains like Dr. Doofenshmirtz where she sticks around post villain arc and becomes an unwillingly rehabilitated good guy who helps out the heroes while slowly learning morals. I just love everything about her and want her to stick around is that so wrong?
While I’m on this character we’re going to switch from thoughts to theories!!!
“Oooooh, Temperance was cast out for seeking a dark power beneath the town, freezer demon is a dark power beneath the town! I wonder if it’s related!”
No but really, how have none of the characters mentioned this yet. Like you just two days ago learned this thing was kept BENEATH THE TOWN and nobody made the connection. Do I personally think it’s the thing Temperance is after? No! I think it’s a misdirect! But it’s not much of a misdirect if nobody brings it up. The freezer demon was free at the beginning of episode one to kill corn maze man, and at the end of episode one Temperance used the cat’s heart to drip blood on a map, hinting she’s still looking for something. What is it, I don’t know but I can’t wait to find out. Plus even if Temperance isn’t the freezer demon’s unlocker the dead guy still had Icarus moths on his clothes, they had to have gotten there somehow. And I’m dying to know, who is it that Nancy reminds her of that she failed to save? Can’t be her daughter who took the wraith making machine upstate and carried on the Hudson line. I wonder if whomever it is was Temperance’s motivation for becoming a woman in white?
Also, it might’ve been just me, but when they were all questioning Temperance she seemed VERY touchy about the wraith of Gorham woods. Everything else she just brushed off with mild annoyance, but when calling the wraith “an ill conceived mistake” there was like a snap in her tone. Like I thought we were done with the wraith but idk, maybe not. If Temperance knew she was going to be killed, why try the wraith trick at all and not just let them kill her? What was the wraith even supposed to do in the first place just suck the life out of people?
I THINK ADDY WILL BECOME A WOMAN IN WHITE. At this point one of Bess’s love interests has to stick, and they can’t get rid of a second Native character, and she’s employed at the youth center, so I’m betting Addy will stick around. Plus she knows about magic already (I think?) since Bess was all “I dealt with a haunting” and Addy was just like “that’s hot”. I’m curious how Nancy’s flirtation/romance with Park will end. My current theory is that he won’t be able to handle the supernatural stuff and skedaddle, but it’s also possible that once the frozen heart case wraps up he’s like “well my job is done off to the next city” but that just seems kind of boring. Temperance could also kill him which I would be into, but it seems unlikely they would kill two of Nancy’s boyfriends. Last small theory, Ace keeps mentioning getting his second job so I’m betting it will be important somehow. Onto the PROPHECIES.
“One of you will be the other’s demise. One of you will betray your true love. One of you will lose your heart. One of you will wreak havoc on this town. One of you will forsake what is dearest to you. Only one of you will fulfill your destiny and that will cause the rest to fall.”
God I fucking love prophecies like this. Just little small short ones, I’m very picky about prophecies cause like free will and everything and this is right in the sweet spot. So before I dive into who’s who I acknowledge that the last line might be saying only one prophecy will come true and that will make the others not come true, BUT I instead choose to believe one of the prophecies is meant for Ryan because otherwise why the fuck was he even there? I am assuming the prophecies wrap up by season’s end btw.
One of you will be the other’s demise. So I have a hesitant theory that this one could be Nancy because obviously nobody is going to die, BUT somebody IS going to lose their heart. And if my Ace mom dying theory is correct, that could be another definition of demise, and if Nancy were to somehow cause it? Potentially to save Ace? God just imagine it. Aside from that idk, we started with a tricky one.
One of you will betray your true love. I’m going to get hate for this but this prophecy is also the main reason I think Ryan should be included, because I think this is his prophecy. I am just hesitant to think the writers would describe any of the current pairings as true love so early on, (Bess and Addy Nick and George Nancy and Ace) especially when two of them weren’t even together at prophecy time. But I think it’s obvious from just about everything that Ryan’s true love was Lucy Sable. And as everyone knows I am a very fierce bring back Dead Lucy proponent, so if Ryan were forced to somehow betray Lucy, probably to save Nancy or something, god that would be gut wrenching in the best way.
One of you will lose your heart. Two main ideas about this one. We keep getting hints about Ace’s mom dying, with the heart problem for example, and in Nancy’s sex dream Ace was literally missing his heart so it’s possible his mom is going to die. OR, Nancy describes Horseshoe Bay as “this town is my home and it’s my heart” so how angsty would it be, if after finally claiming this town as her own, Nancy loses it to save it or something? Like imagine at the end of the season they have to get rid of Temperance by banning ALL Hudsons from the town or something Nancy and Ryan included, so she loses Horseshoe Bay her heart? I think that could be fun, plus then in season 4 we have to find a way to let her back in (and Ryan).
One of you will wreak havoc on this town. I feel kind of confident in saying this one is Bess. Like I feel it’s almost obvious. She’s learning magic, magic wreaks havoc, it even rhymes. Plus I’m not really sure who else it could be, the others don’t fit. But I’m also confident that Bess would never hurt the town on purpose, so mayhap she loses control or something. We shall see!
One of you will forsake what is dearest to you. Again, this one could be a lot of things. Personally, I think this one could be Nick leaving George. Kind of anti climactic for the word “forsaken” but hear me out. Nick could be like ‘hey George turns out I’ve been running from a whole lot of trauma and so I do love you but I also need to like find myself’ or something like that. BUT this one could also be Nancy forsaking Horseshoe Bay or something similar, because it says you will forsake WHAT is dearest to you, not WHO. But unless it’s like Ace sending Florence to the scrap heap I really don’t have any strong feelings about it.
Only one of you will fulfill your destiny. We are also ending with a tricky one and I’m saying George for selfish reasons. I still think she will be manifesting psychic powers at one point, and if it’s genetic from her mother one could argue it’s her ‘destiny’. If she’s doubting it and herself and drawing away, she could withhold vital information from the others causing them to fall in some metaphorical way, which I would of course enjoy.
More theories!
Let me just say Hannah Gruen is not evil. Absolutely no way. So here’s what we know. When Temperance broke the barrier the power went out and Hannah went with the key, presumably to free the freezer demon. She hasn’t been seen since. The freezer demon has two “confirmed” human kills, (SAVE SPOT ***) corn maze man and Jake the racist cafe owner. Becket Dow who made the padlock was around in Civil War time so 1860s, so freezer demon has been in jail for probably just over a hundred years, we assume to keep it from freezing out hearts and idk, eating them? We don’t know what he does with them. Nancy’s theory is that Hannah unleashed freezer demon and he’s now just like having fun idk. There is ALSO something knocking on the Drew/Hudson door every night for like two weeks.
Since Hannah isn’t evil (god she better not be evil or I will be so mad I got back into this show) I have two main theories about this. One, the demon is not the one doing the killing, Temperance is. I know Nancy and Co. have now agreed that Temperance wouldn’t just move in and immediately start killing, but she MIGHT if she knew something else would get caught for it. And she happens to know about a heart freezing entity located conveniently beneath the town. The demon didn’t attack Nancy and Ryan when they were right in front of it twice now. Once at Icarus Hall, yes Nancy keeps saying “it attacked me” but bitch I promise you it was just standing there. A second time in the cage tunnels when it just wanted its doll back. They’ve worked out that the freezer demon apparently has some kind of rules about who it attacks, but what if the freezer demon is not attacking anybody? Maybe it’s only ever wanted to freeze rat hearts and somebody else is killing humans. Or it’s being controlled/magically forced into killing humans against its will. The why of its victims remains unknown, like just the corn maze guy sure because he’s like stalking Hudsons, but all Jake did to audience knowledge was be racist, he wasn’t a threat to Nancy or anyone else. My SECOND theory is that Hannah IS somehow the freezer demon. This one is a little out there I admit it. So I’m thinking way back in yester year the then-keeper subdued the demon, and since it wouldn’t fit into a historical society storage box, they locked it in the basement instead behind glass that read ‘FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY’ or something. Hannah somehow sensed that the barrier fell and went to go free the demon in hopes of somehow using it against Temperance. The doll contains Hannah’s soul/human essence or something, which is why the demon is protective of it. When its job is done, it will somehow use the doll to release its soul.
Theory 2A is that Hannah tried to release the freezer demon as a last resort, Temperance like beat her to it, and Hannah’s disembodied form is now knocking on Nancy’s door every night trying to get help somehow. Not a great theory but it’s all I’ve got.
I would love to hear YOUR theories on the freezer demon, the phantom knocker, and if you’ve totally forgiven Ryan or not. Don’t be afraid to leave your thoughts in the replies or my ask box, and hopefully I’ll be seeing you soon after Nancy Drew season 3 episode 8, the Burning of the Sorrows.
(There is high key a 50% chance that title is referring to how the entity that feeds on sorrow goes after Nick and he symbolically burns some trauma related stuff in a garbage can to Move On or something. Calling it.)
On a final note for all the Nick x Nancy shippers out there I would like to say put into the universe that as soon as Nick and George break up Nancy and Ace will get together and then we can get some pining on Nick’s part which would be fun okay bye.

some persona/dr au ideas (under the cut bc spoilers)
i have many Thoughts about shadow nagito. he's a golden shadow akin to shadow futaba. he is nagito's desire to live and be loved made manifest. so basically, nagito pulls a naoto fully expecting to die to prove that things aren't over, but instead he's confronted by his shadow self SCREAMING at him that he deserves to be loved and happy. and nagito just... can't take it. it's only when the others save him from his shadow that he realises, oh shit people do actually care about me don't they? and that gives him the push to accept himself.
imposter is shadow byakuya, but some Things happened and now they're somehow a totally seperate entity??? it's either junko or makoto's fault, or POSSIBLY izuru's idk.
(they meet in the inevitable arena au and things turn into the spiderman meme very quickly.)
hifumi plays anime openings using his persona to hype the others up when he's on navi duty.
somehow, junko manages to take a selfie with nyarlathotep.
kokichi got his persona way before the others, but he's just using it to loot palaces without actually taking the treasure. he gets kind of salty when the phantom thieves of heart start destroying palaces. this escalates to them stealing his heart (with his permission), after which he joins them.
sonia: who wants to talk about MURDERS? :D
junko: great news! you're all going to die in a month and there's nothing you can do about it! :D
izuru: akane, do you know any other words that start with f?
one of the thieves' targets is the head of maki's assassin org. another is kiyo's sister.
you became friends with nagito. nagito will now die for you.
shuichi loses his hat the first time he gets sucked into a palace and forgets to grab it before he and kaede hightail it out of there. after the palace gets destroyed he realises that OH SHIT I NEVER WENT AND GOT MY HAT.
mondo is basically shinji. he accidentally caused his brother's death when his persona awakened and he's kind of fucked up about it? and yes this makes taka akihiko. and i guess chihiro can be ken.
toko and jill have seperate personae - toko has odette and jill has odile. however, they share an ultimate persona - freyja - because she represents them learning to work together as a system.
izuru is the result of someone trying to make the most powerful artificial persona-user imaginable and it going about as well as you'd expect. hajime is actually shadow izuru, who is living out a repressed desire to be a normal person who goes to school and has friends. hajime isn't aware of this. he does not take the revalation well. (eventually izuru does accept hajime, they fuse, and then he gets his ult persona aten.)
this is kind of a joke but???
shadow leon: you like baseball, don't you leon?
leon: YOU'RE NOT ME
the kaede/joker parallels are actually kind of incredible for this au. unfairly convicted of a violent crime, by a person who turns out to be a major villain.
...is monaca nanako.
tenko is very disappointed to learn that she cannot "steal someone's heart" in the seduction sense. more specifically that she can't steal himiko's heart. sad lesbian noises.
(not that tenko actually WOULD do that if she could, but the joke is there.)
makoto probably won't die in this au but i do have the mental image of him and kyoko on the rooftop on the last day of school and i'm making anyone who reads this far really sad aren't i?
"how do you want your coffee?" "cream and sugar." "who are you, himiko?" "kirumiiiii, i want it black!"
kiibo take morgana's place in the story. kiibo will have to turn into a car. KIIBO IS A TRANSFORMER IN THIS AU.

more info about skyfall that I didn’t get to include in the story!!
- Clara is the editor in chief of a magazine. Archer is the president of the same company. they give me gossip girl x the devil wears prada vibes
- they were going to be working at a publishing company for books but I changed it to a fashion magazine before it got cut completely
- they live in NYC
-if I could picture Archer, he would look like Sam Witwer but kinda hotter?
- if I could picture Clara, she would be brunette. muted green eyes that aren’t hazel but they aren’t brown. dark green but not like emerald green. a rounded face with a sharp jawline. think Winona Ryder and Mariska Hargitay had a baby that looks like Odette Annable
- speaking of Mariska, it was originally a fanfic about Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler
- there was a cut scene where instead of seeing the photo of Millie on her phone, she went back to her office where her assistant was going to pop in. There she would see the framed photo on her desk. It was too long of a scene and it needed to be shortened so it got cut :( it was then replaced with her seeing the picture on her phone in therapy
-‘twas inspired by grey’s anatomy’s plane crash
- they’re rich. like super rich. but when you’re in the middle of nowhere, you’re not rich. when you’re in a life or death situation, you’re not rich. so, that wasn’t reiterated. however, imagine them going from 100 to 0
- Clara is incredibly strong. She would not have been the weak type. and she isn’t weak, she’s just in her own version of survival mode so she is shut down completely. in her normal life, she would’ve been a powerhouse of a person. girlboss shit
- Archer was in the army to afford to go to college. he’s the type of guy who has lived many lives in one lifetime. originally he was going to have been a marine.
- Clara and Archer met while working together.
- they were probably out there for 2-3 months. Don’t ask me how, I don’t know
- THEY GET RESCUED!!! I PROMISE!!

NEXT CHAPTER
Tumblr media
Y/N decided that the best way to get her mind off her delirious daydreaming which would surely throw her straight into the deepest and darkest hole in Hell was to go and visit her mother. After all, she was almost sure she would still be upset over Odette throwing her out and Y/N would never dare to make her mother unhappy. Therefore, with a basket holding a few left over treats from the breakfast she had run off from, she made her way to her mother’s living quarters. Once she came in, unlike other times, her mother merely stared her down as if she was a misbehaving child, eyes so glossy and cold one would believe she were dead were it not for the misty fog coming out of her nose every time she breathed.
     - Mother... - Y/N started but Lady Catherine quickly interrupted her.
     - What did I clearly said when we left Arendelle? - she looked down at her daughter, eyes so cold and icy it could kill anyone who looked directly into it, something Y/N didn’t dare to do, choosing instead to look at her feet. - What were you not to do? Why could you not obey?
    - Mother, I am ...
   - What have I been to you? What would you have me be? - she dismissed her child’s pleas, instead returning to sit on her chair. - Ah, but I’m old and ugly and I embarrass you.
    - Mother no.  - Y/N held her hands tenderly. - You could never embarrass me.
    - You’re ashamed of me. You are ashamed.
    - No. - Y/N shook her head violently. - But I ... I want to see the world by myself, have my own experiences.
    - The world ... - the woman sighed, almost disgusted at the word. - You don’t know what’s out there in the world and someone needs to shield you from the world. Men like the one who seems to caught your eye waits in the world but you must know what masks they wear for the world.
   - I know, mother. I know I was just being polite.
   - Oh darling let’s just return with home. Stay with me who could love you more than I? No one can love you more than I and the world is dark and wild for someone like you. The world has nothing that I cannot supply. - Lady Catherine combed through Y/N’s locks with her fingers. - Stay innocent to the dark things of the world while you can.
    - But I promised I would stay with Odette to help her throughout the engagement. I gave her my word. - the young woman looked up to her mother, the conflicting of interests clearly fighting in her head. - I ... We ... we can return after the wedding.
    - Oh, darling ... - Catherine cupped her face, a soft smile on her lips. - You know all I do, I do to shield you from the bad things of the world.
Y/N merely stared at her feet as her mother combed through her hair. She felt guilty, no, guilt couldn’t even describe how she felt. It was almost as if a weight was placed on her consciousness. She remained still in her seating position as her mother continued with her “you don’t know what’s out there in the world” mantra. It was true, Y/N didn’t know what was out there in the world but she wanted to see it yet something always stopped her. Her mother. If Y/N left, she would have no one left and Y/N would feel way to guilty to leave.
Time seemed to stop whenever she was around her mother so the guilt seemed to linger and somehow kept lingering as she returned to the Princess’ quarters to help her prepare for the tournament. Between hair braiding and helping with the picking of the dress, Y/N was lost in her mind. Maybe her mother was right, maybe she needed to be shielded from the world, after all whenever she was left alone in it she had way too many ...  perverse thoughts.
     - You’re quiet, Y/N. - Eliza mentioned, eyes glued onto the mirror as she applied more rouge to her cheeks. - It’s a tournament, get excited.
     - Y/N hates tournaments. - Odette had a cheeky smile on her face. - She thinks they’re blatant demonstrations of toxic male virility.
     - Maybe you’ll change your mind, after all Duke Barnes is participating in the tournament. - she put her tongue out, a little childish like wonder in her face. The princess’ face however tensed and with a low tone she asked Eliza to leave her and Y/N alone. - I’ll see you in the boxes.
The two nodded as the silent embraced the room birthed by the sound of the door closing. Odette sighed, getting up from her setting position with a tense face, every line clearly creased and marked on her normally beautifully young plump face which seemed to make everyone around her smile. Yet, now, it just looked ... worried even.
The princess pointed at the chair she had been sat in, an unspoken request for having Y/N take her place which she did without much question. Grabbing the silver brush from the side, she started to brush her hair, pulling it up in one of the flower like hairstyles.
     - Rosaline mentioned Duke Barnes went after you after you cut your finger. Is there anything you want to tell me? - she carefully pushed some hairs in front of her face to rest on top of some lilies resting on her hair.
     - He’s just being polite, Odette.
     - Y/N, you know I adore you like a sister and as such I don’t want to see you hurt. Duke Barnes has never, never shown affection towards anyone and the only person whom he seems to trust is Rosaline. I’m afraid that he might try to take advantage of you. - she settled down the brush, placing her hands on her shoulders before lowering down. - You don’t deserve heartache and disrespect.
     - I think you might be too kind to rule Genoa. - Y/N tried to break the atmosphere which seemed to work as Odette laughed.
The two ladies took to starting to walk to their own box, outside in the rainy nature of Genoa. She looked down from her box, seeing the swarm of men interested in showing their abilities, willing to woe as many ladies as they could, yet Y/N seemed unfazed by it. However, her attention quickly shifted as James walked the field dressed in dark burgundy clothing with his sharpened long sword in hand. Had she been paying attention to anything else, she would’ve heard Odette’s warnings yet every single warning, every shred of common sense seemed to vanish into thin air whenever she looked at him. There was just something about him, a warmness, a sense of belonging, like seeing a very old childhood friend and while she couldn’t exactly understand it, she didn’t know if she wanted to understand it.
Just like Rosaline had said before, he was a skilled swordsmen, defeating his very first adversaries without breaking a sweat or even trying and she was completely enchanted by him. The way his body moved, how his perfectly tied back hair would come undone, she kept wondering what it would feel to brush her hands through it and as she lost herself more and more in him, the scent was back. The white rose scent.
The scent itself was enough to throw her off her glare on him, instead turning around to try and find someone with roses in their hair but nothing. Lilies, baby’s breathes, tulips, but no roses. She had first thought that he wore some cologne with that scent but it would be near impossible for her to smell it with him being that far.
Her mind was so wrapped around the white roses she didn’t realise that he had started to struggle. Standing against one of the king’s men, she noticed how he would overpower him by kicking sand into his eyes and her heart started to beat faster. Hands clutched at the stone of the box as she watched the match, the loud sound of swords making her eyes tear. Yet, she didn’t know pain until the clinging ceased and instead a loud grunt was heard. Things seemed to stop, go incredibly slow, the way his knees hit the ground, the dust that settled and her getting up, only being stopped by Odette putting a hand on her stomach.
Her breathing speeded up before completely stopping for a few minutes, time running slower and slower until it speed up as he got back on his feet, disarming the man of throwing him into the ground which sent the crowd into a frenzy of applause. Y/N’s heart seemed to return to beating as the maidens presented the Duke with a crown of blue hyacinths. However, unlike other tournaments, they didn’t seem to crown him with it, instead handing it to him.
    - Why didn’t they crown him? - she asked Eliza, a hand in front of her mouth as not to call for much attention.
    - It’s a Genoan tradition. They don’t crown the winner, they allow him to pick a woman of the crowd whom he believes to be the Queen of Love and Beauty. Rosaline tends to get it whenever Lord Barnes wins.
    - Queen of Love and Beauty? Don’t you think it’s a bit childish? - she smirked as she saw him walk towards Rosaline.
    - It makes the Princess happy. - she shrugged and Y/N nodded, it wasn’t her place to judge their traditions.
Her eyes lingered back to James who was standing in front of the King’s box where Rosaline was sat. Yet, instead of slowing down his pace, he continued to walk much to the crowd surprise until he stood in front of her box. Every single person seemed to watch intently, expecting the Duke to crown the guest, Odette, as the Queen of Love and Beauty.
Y/N smiled, happy at the thought of her friend receiving the honour but instead, without much thought, the noblesman’s arm stretched to place the crown on her lap.

Favorite Stucky Fics
Reading has been a big solace to me during this time of sheltering in place, both novels and fanfic. I wanted to put a little positivity out there for some of my favorite fanfic writers as a way of saying thanks for providing some of the stories that have been brightening my days.
Today, I specifically want to give some love to my favorite Stucky fics. There is just something about Bucky and Steve’s contrasting personalities and their “to the end of the line” friendship turning into something more that is compelling every time, and I love it. I have read many, but these are my absolute favorites--the ones I go back to time and again.
Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail by owlet.
Normally, amnesia/memory loss in a love story is one of my nope tropes, so the majority of my Stucky reading veers toward AUs. However, I saw a Tumblr post about this one, and I was hooked by the first chapter. Barnes is a compelling narrator as he figures out how to piece himself back together over the course of this series. It treats his recovery with so much care, and yet Barnes is also a hilarious and grumpy dude that it is fun to read about. There is a touch of unreliable narrator, which is a favorite trope of mine, but even when Barnes doesn’t quite understand what’s going on, he still gets to the heart of a situation in a satisfying way. This is now my preferred head cannon for post CA:tWS.
I just met you (and this is crazy) by @littlesystems
This was the fic that really hooked me on Stucky for the first time. I tended to avoid Stucky due to my nope trope on amnesia, but a Harringrove fic writer I loved recommended this so I tried it. Modern Bucky pulled me in and I fell into Shrunkyclunks, which then got me into Stucky in general. I love how modern Bucky can compliment cannon Steve, and in this fic, his personality is so pre-WWII Bucky that it’s perfect. Adding in Steve 1000% Rogers and some unexpected Tony heart are great additions. Faking dating is another favorite trope of mine, and while this fic isn’t classic fake dating, it skirts the edge in a really fun way.
Prince Charming by Brenda
Brenda writes awesome modern Stucky AUs, but Prince Charming is the best. The concept of someone who sets their exes up with their best friends is fun, and Bucky’s character growth as he navigates being bisexual for the first time is powerful. The supporting cast is great. I love the mix of Howlies and Avengers in his life, and Cap and Winter the pups are perfect. Also, there is something really compelling about both the tattoo shop setting in general and his specialty in tattooing scar tissue. And if you like this one, check out Off the Record and Lessons in Chemistry by Brenda, too.
Sweater Weather by @odette-and-odile
Another Shrunkyclunks, this one centering around holidays and important events. It starts with a misunderstanding in which Bucky doesn’t recognize Steve as Captain America, and it just gets better and better. There is real character growth in both of characters over the course of the series, the Avengers and the Barnes family get really fleshed out, and there is tons of humor as well.
food for thot by @deisderium
This fic introduced me to a new favorite trope--dragons living as humans who treasure a person. And then Deisderium turned the human into a vampire for good measure. The supernatural elements of this world feel so natural, and the dragon world is especially fleshed out in the most recent installment. Deisderium has a way with story-appropriate turns of phrases and writes thirst and pining like a master (check out deep dive and the one less traveled for more of that).
 Fan the Flame by Avaaricious
As you can tell, I am partial to modern AUs and Shrunkyclunk stories. This one started off with a funny “meet ugly” concept--swiping right on Tinder by mistake--but it has become one of the most well fleshed out, character oriented stories I’ve ever read. Bucky’s emotional IQ in this story is through the roof, and it touches on issues like PTSD with tact and grace. The chapter about Bucky’s no good very bad day made me teary. Also, this representation of the Barnes family as a whole is the best one I’ve ever read. Fair warning, this is the only one on my all time faves list that is still a WIP, but it’s worth it and chapters come out semi-regularly.
Slide to Answer by relenafanel
There should be more wrong number meet cutes in the world. I love Steve the relationship/dating guy accidentally misdialing Bucky the one night stand guy. And the sequel with Bucky fumbling through his first Christmas in a relationship makes the series.
Red Velvet (a.k.a. Sugar Sweet) by @colorcoated01
I’m not sure why I even started this one, because Daddy kink is not really my thing, but this story is so good that does not even matter. Steve is gorgeous, caring, and basically too good to be true, but what really makes this story is Bucky. He’s sweet, funny, and full of heart, but his youth makes him an unreliable narrator in ways both hilarious and delightful. If the summer vacation sequel to this series ever shows up, I will be so excited!
Not Easily Conquered by dropdeaddream and What Are Fears
In this AU, Steve survives the plane crash, lives to marry Peggy, and then, in the 1960s, a set of never-sent letters from Bucky to Steve during the war come out for public consumption, turning everyone’s life upside-down. This is a new one to my list of faves, but man, it was a gut punch in the best way. Here is the best quote: So how long have I loved you for? Womb to tomb, sweetheart. Since before I was even here at all.
If Wishing Made It So by leveragehunters (Monkeygreen)
I knew that my favorite Stucky fics list would not be complete without something from leveragehunters. This writer’s world creation skills are absolutely incredible. So many of these fics, I’d read and think, “This world is so good, so compelling, that I’d read it without the Marvel characters.” Amazing stuff, seriously! And the way she uses the familiar Marvel characters only enhances the worlds she’s created (and the ones she’s borrowed, too). I love so many of these, I was really torn on which one to put on the list, as there are many I revisit. Finally, I decided on If Wishing Made It So because I wanted one Shrinkyclinks story on my list, and this is a great one. The Winter Soldier as genie works so well, and pairing him with Skinny!Steve was even better. The way she weaves consent issues into the mix is compelling, and their adventures draw you in from the get go. And the all-powerful genie trying in vain to protect the guy who doesn’t want to be protected or healed is a great dichotomy. And if you want other Shrinkyclinks, you can’t go wrong with Chase This Light (dragon trope!) or And Shadows Fall Behind. And, if I hadn’t decided to go Shrinkyclinks on this entry, leveragehunter’s Werewolf? There Wolf AU would totally have been on the list instead.

For the “Serious” Ask Game: 1; 3; 5; 13; 18; 20
1. You have just been elected supreme overlord of the earth. What is the first law you enact?
This is actually a common joke among my friends - so I’m answering honestly and hoping no one gets offended. The first thing I’d do is put birth control in the water. Not anything permanent - we’d have filtered water supplies for people who wanted kids, but the potential-parent would be required to take (and pass) a course on child psychology, development, and care before being allowed access to it. I know it’s a harsh opinion, but it’s the kind of opinion you develop after years of teaching and having to encounter incredibly sad stories over and over again. (And if this kind of opinion offends anyone... then just pretend it was a joke, hahaha?)
3. Make up a new word. Give us its definition. Use it in a sentence.
I’m really bad at these kinds of things - I mostly take the German approach and squish two words together to form new words. Or just use random sounds to describe how I’m feeling. I’m sorry, but I really can’t think of one off the top of my head.
5. Velociraptors have attacked your school. Do you expect to make it out of the encounter in one piece? (Be honest).
Yes, to the point that it’s probably not a good thing. I’m a survivor by nature. I once got kicked out of a school safety meeting because the presenter said in a school emergency, our top priority becomes “survival, at all costs” and I had a lot of questions about what “all costs” meant.  So, yes - I will survive the velociraptors. But I can’t make the same promise for anyone else near me who might make a good velociraptor distraction.
13. How are you today? (Do try and be honest, we have a tendency to be horrendous liars when it comes to this question. I blame society…. [mutters to self] ….fuckin’ society.)
Honestly? Bummed. I took down my Christmas decorations and have to go back to work tomorrow... But it’s also my one-year-sober mark today so that’s kind of exciting. (Sorry if that’s sharing too much, it’s not a thing I normally talk about, but today it’s kind of special.)
18. Did you ever have a crush on an animated character growing up? Who was it?
Um... yeah? A lot. I still do, but I’ll stick to the childhood crushes, lol. I think my first one was either Princess Jasmine or Princess Odette - definitely a princess of some kind. I also liked Poison Ivy from the Batman series a lot... which my mom now points to as the first time she realized I was going to be kind of an idiot when it came to girls.
20.You have just been overthrown as supreme overlord of the earth. What was the final straw that made humanity revolt against your supreme overlord-ness?
So, knowing people, it probably wasn’t any of the really big ideas I have about healthcare, public service, and education reform. It was probably something small. And very dumb. Like banning yellow foods. No more yellow foods. No lemon candies, mustard, mountain dew. I think that’s what would get me de-overlorded.
