Ok so im FINALLY getting around to finishing season 3 (I never did because when I was watching it first time around I hated having to watch Nancy with Agent Park and then I learned about the curse and wanted to wait for season 4 - which took FOREVER) and im on episode 10 and am reminded how much I dislike Nancy and Agent Park.

In the beginning, they weren't so bad, but episode 9 and on feel forced. Like Nancy was hiding from Ace's feelings by being with Agent Park. Nancy also just seems so... weird with him. Like she needs to prove she's good at what she does bc hes in the FBI. Idk. I'm in no way hating on Agent Park or the actor, just don't like how it went down.

Also dislike how half of her love interests seem too old for her. Owen had to be early thirties at least (I think he was closer to Ryan's age than Nancy's), and Agent Park is passed finishing college, med school, a residency, and FBI training. So, again, he's late twenties/early thirties unless he was a prodigy child.

Sorry, if my friend who is 30 is dating a 19 year old I'd be like ummm nah, let's not do that, k? Gives me the ick.

Nancy Drew - Temperance’s Tarot Reading

I’m actually kind of annoyed that they gave us the answers to Temperance’s tarot card predictions at the end of season 3. There were so many things that could have applied to each one, I thought it was way cooler when it was up for interpretation.

That being said, I was surprised by all of the outcomes, some of them because they seemed so simple, and some of them because they seemed like kind of a stretch. I’m also kind of annoyed that Odette and Charity ultimately didn’t figure into the predictions, since there were eight possible people referred to and technically eight souls in front of Temperance when she was speaking, which I thought was a cool but easy-to-miss detail.

Anyway, here’s what I thought each prediction was probably referring to versus what it turned out to be.

One of you will be the other’s demise.

I honestly thought this was referring to Bess being forced to destroy Odette’s soul to save George’s life, but it turns out it was about Nancy killing Temperance, even though Temperance didn’t appear to be including herself in the predictions.

One of you will betray your true love.

This one was my biggest stretch, but I thought it referred to Ace. Not a betrayal as in turning on someone or breaking an oath, but a play on words that refers to his revelation of how he feels for Nancy. But no. It’s apparently about George breaking off a relationship with Nick for perfectly understandable reasons and pursuing a legal career.

One of you will lose your heart.

I thought this was about Nick metaphorically losing heart by the end of the season, coming to doubt himself and his goals for the youth center and everything he’d been putting all of his energy into. Dude was really in a bad place and needed help and healing. But apparently it was about Ace being heartbroken over Nancy’s rejection, which I’m sorry. Is just such a blah, duh interpretation.

One of you will wreak havoc on this town.

I actually never thought this referred to Bess. Given that it’s Horseshoe Bay, a truth spell that accidentally causes a little bit of oversharing for a couple of hours hardly seems to rise to the level of “havoc.” I previously thought this was referring to Nancy almost choosing not to kill Temperance, and the resulting tsunami.

One of you will forsake what is dearest to you.

I kept thinking this was gonna end up being about Ryan somehow. That at some point he was going to have to leave Nancy behind, either to protect her or because he chose being a Hudson over being her dad and realized his mistake too late (though I was really rooting for the former, I’ve enjoyed the hell out of Ryan’s redemption and I would be devastated if they did that to him). Every time he got approached by someone from his old world or mentioned a new job or anything like that, I was so tense! And then for a horrified ten minutes I thought it was about Ryan dying and leaving Nancy behind to mourn TWO parents. But it's about Nick giving up the youth center.

And only one of you will fulfill your destiny… and that will cause the rest to fall.

Given how much Temperance emphasized that her daughter had a destiny, I thought this referred to Charity and the role her soul would play in the season endgame. But apparently it refers to...Ryan? And some unknown shady shit he’s gotten mixed up in for next season? Which just raises my trepidation again because I really love the dynamic Ryan has built with Nancy and Carson and I don’t want anything to fuck with that. I really hope they stay true to the trajectory they have him on, where yeah he’s a little naive but ultimately he’s dedicated to being better than his parents.

Can I just say how proud I am of Ace for standing up for himself in that final 4x05 Nace scene.

One of Ace's longtime struggles is that he is a pushover. This boy is so kind and easygoing -- which is part of why he works well with Nancy -- but as a result, he frequently lets things slide that really damage or hurt him. Those feelings then get distilled and placed on the backburner. The thing is, Nancy broke his heart, too, for months on end, by lying about her feelings and pushing him away. That part has barely been talked about by anyone.

And now after all this time of quiet hurt and crushed hopes and sitting in the wake of devastation, he has had to make the horrible decision to protect Nancy's life and whatever is left of their relationship. He loves her so much it aches, and he is miserable without her, and she is angry at him for a choice he never wanted to make. He has every right to be frustrated!

It's rare that this show grants Ace the space to express his unfiltered, messy emotions and I'm so glad they gave him the opportunity for that kind of catharsis. It signals autonomy and growth that he was able to stand by his decision and lay out all the reasons for it, yet still have a compassionate conversation with the love of his life about why their love for each other has led them to different conclusions.

i need to rewatch veronica mars again. i miss her. i wish there were more shows like that. the show’s depiction of women was far from perfect but the writing for veronica mars and lilly kane was genuinely great and they remain some of the best written female characters ive seen. honestly the depiction of lilly kane is genuinely one of the most impressive things about this show the way they portrayed her as a fairly realistic self-centred teenager who did dumb things but still had empathy for her and the narrative never once judged her or blamed her for her murder. 

#veronica mars #veronica too was such a great character #like she was tough and smart and was allowed to be angry and grieve for lilly and the way her life used to be #and was just nosy teenage girl poking her nose where she wasnt supposed to and pissing off authority figures #plus after seeing the way woman who have stood up against abuse this past year have been treated #lilly's character and the way she was treated with such sympathy and care feels like such a relief #like the writing for the show wasnt perfect and the mysteries weren't always do or die #and sometimes could have been written better #and season 3 was just 😬 at times #she definitely reminds me of nancy drew despite the totally different genres and tone of the story #but like nancy drew the mysterys were pretty fun and they both had dads who were private investigators #and there was variation in each mystery #i fully blame nancy drew for my love of mysteries and girl detectives and general nosiness
