I FINISHED ROBIN HOOD YESTERDAY
(the birthday of RA, may I note)
After 34 days, or thereabouts. That makes me seem like a casual, non-fixated media-consumer, but actually that's my disciplined strategy of ensuring my fixation can sustain me for a long period of time.
Now it's time to reflect on season 3 and do some episode-by-episode reviews.
Total Eclipse - What was going on. It was different. Everything felt different. Robin had had a haircut and Guy had had a hair growth, which was actually debilitating to his vision. Also the Sheriff had eye shadow and shaved that bit of hair that everyone liked. Guy made a fool of himself by not killing Robin but entered his emo phase.
Cause and Effect - Kate began her campaign to make everyone cringe at the construction of female characters. Unfortunately she would never get over the death of that pathetic brother. Really random Irish guys. Goodbye Gisborne.
Lost in Translation - yes, Wikipedia, you're very right to note Gisborne is absent. I was almost losing hope for the series. The Bible in English, that's crazy. Was this when they dug up a skeleton?
Sins of the Father - I don't know why everyone acted like they knew Rufus. Allan and Kate definitely could have developed a relationship from here, but no, Robin's the only charmy smarmy man allowed. Snivelling accountant was killed. A little three-way conflict and little laddy escaped the shadow of his father.
Let the Games Commence - Gisborne returned with a boosted ego, styled hair, a pet lion, and things looked up. He has a sister? Now you're pushing it, writers. I did find her attractive here but, you know, that changed. A nice circus theme going on and that ginger kid tried his best.
Do You Love Me? - Now things really looked up. Prince John is a gem. He set that random wedding on fire. Gisborne and the Sheriff were pitted against each other, ouch. Did I hallucinate or did the Sheriff claim to be like his father as Guy 'killed' him? The awkward dinners, amazing. The failure at kingly healing, oh yes.
Too Hot to Handle - Prince John carried it again. Robin and Isabella really shouldn't have been a thing so it was good when Guy went after them. After treading water and undressing Isabella snapped and turned bad and we had a quarreling quadrangle: Robin, Isabella, Gisborne, Prince John.
The King Is Dead, Long Live the King - a kind of uninteresting episode, but Guy escaped Isabella, began his redemption arc, Robin faced off with his old mentor.
A Dangerous Deal - Guy and Meg, my heart, incredibly adorable, Meg was literally the best female character and she deserved more time, Guy had a character reversal, flash feminism I guess and husband-killing.
Bad Blood - the most weird weirdest episode to exist, we learnt a lot of too convenient and too overlooked facts about Robin and Guy's family history, had to watch loads of new characters take all the action, where Robin's dad happened to spring from who knows, but I overlooked the massive stretches for the sake of seeing Robin and Guy ride off into the sunset
The Enemy of My Enemy - I really wish Robin and Guy could have developed as a pair like this for longer, Archer was somewhat a prick, but I'm nevertheless fond of the strange brother trio.
Something Worth Fighting For Part 1 - Showdown time. Honestly, Kate and Robin's romance was a no-go. But sure. Turning gang members out, almost suffocating Much, Guy and Robin in the tunnels, Allan's painful death, there was some good drama.
Something Worth Fighting For Part 2 - I was so glad to have the Sheriff back. Having it back how it used to be, the final fight being against the original, key villain. Guy not a villain, a solid gang member. But then it was die die time. That tunnel scene was cruel. Guy and Robin as friends: I don't care if it's unbelievable, it makes me happy. Robin took on the nice little 'I'll be the hero and sacrifice myself so everyone else can prosper' trope. When Marian stepped out of the trees I was a goner.

ohhhh lord the straights are poking me today. i must rant.
OK. So. Your husband not magically knowing the exact perfect way to do a thing is NOT WEAPONIZED INCOMPETANCE.
firstly, you have a problem with perfectionism. it's not a cute quirk, it's a trait that causes you A LOT OF GRIEF and disappointment. The solution is not to require everyone around you to also have your unattainably high standards.
The solution is to practice sitting with the discomfort/fear/shame/whatever that arises when something isn't perfect, and eventually seeing the beauty of imperfection.
secondly - let's say you have no interest in dealing with any of what i just said; you like your standards and want to keep them. That's fine, but you still do not have the right to require those around you to a) magically know what your standards are and b) always meet them, especially if they don't have the same standards as you. (many don't)
The solution here is to not ask people to do things unless you're willing to either: explain and show in detail what your standard is and verbally request it be done that way or simply have it not be perfect.
that's it. stop setting your spouse and children (and yourSELF) up for failure by just expecting them to guess and do it perfectly every time. stop demanding that other people have the same expectations as you.
Stop making tiktoks and reels and posts published to the entire world where you shame and insult your husband or child for not being perfect, and allowing others to label them as abusive because they didn't put the stamps or the sheets on the "right way" and how you shouldn't have to ask or tell him how to do it /your way/ (which is not automatically correct) because he should just know.
does weaponized incompetance exist? yes! and it does not fucking look like your spouse just having different standards than you.
it looks like consistently failing to keep track of when your license expires, not renewing it, and then getting tickets so often that your wife just schedules and drives you to get your license renewed every time, so you dont have to worry about it.
it looks like not showing up to pick up your child from school for HOURS, leaving them and the teachers sitting there waiting, over and over again until the SCHOOL ITSELF SAYS "the dad cant pick the kid up anymore, banned, only the other parent because this is awful and not OK" and now you never have to do the school run ever again
it looks like not bathing or changing or supervising your children for the entire week you are their sole carer, so they show up at the family dinner absolutely filthy, and then everyone decides you can't ever be left alone with them again so you never have to be fully responsible for your kids again (but still demand emotional availability from them cuz ur so useless and sad)
it looks like going on a bender and getting so horrifically drunk and acting suicidal ANYTIME someone tries to hold you accountable for anything so that no one ever does because of what you might do
these are all real examples from my real childhood. THIS WAS MY FATHER. HE ACTED LIKE A PATHETIC BABY AND IT EFFECTIVELY REMOVED ALL RESPONSIBILITY IN HIS LIFE, WITHOUT LOSING FREEDOM TO DO THE THINGS HE WANTED TO DO. (until he fought the law and the law beat the absolute shit out of him)
THAT is weaponized incompetance. THAT is emotional abuse.

911 rewatch
3x11
Battlefield boyfriends rescuing the guy dangling from a plane. Badass!!
fgikuvg When the mother of the 911 call asks, “Are you boys single?” Eddie and Buck just turn and look at each other and just. Don’t answer. 😆😆
The introduction of Albert. I’d honestly forgotten what season he’d been introduced. 👀
Mkay, but does any member of the 118 not have parental issues? 💔 Chim’s dad just… doesn’t care about him. 💔💔💔 Thank goodness Chimney had a loving mother (who passed when he was 14), and later was taken in by the wonderful Lees.
Buck: “What’s a bassoon?” When I tell you both my husband and I BURST out laughing at this. And we both agreed right away that this was SUCH a Buck thing to say. 😆
I think this is the second time we’ve seen Hen working heavy machinery with ease. Ma’am, where did you get this training?? =3
Buck knowing that Eddie loves baseball. 💕 And I think Ryan loves baseball in real life? =D
Yikessss, Chimney directing his hurt about his essentially absent father at Albert, who had a different flavor of not great treatment from the dad.
There it is!! Eddie telling Chimney, “There’s the family you’re born into, and the one you choose. The 118 is the family we choose.”
“This is Eddie’s house, I’m not really a guest.” Buck telling Maddie this and this speaks VOLUMES.
Tumblr media
My husband thinks Maddie and Chimney are a good match. 💕
Maddie about her parents: “They’re not bad people, just bad parents.” Hmmmm I wonder if the writers knew just yet what the Buckley’s backstory was gonna be at this point. I mean, as we know now, the Buckley parents are 500% fucking awful parents.
Ohhh Maddie officially meets the Lee’s. Very sweet.
3x12
Buck didn’t knock the idea of being set up with Josh. Honestly one of a handful of signs that Buck isn’t straight. 🏳️‍🌈
But I gotta say I don’t really enjoy, in any media or anywhere, this notion that if someone is single “for a long time” then it’s somehow worrying or a bad thing? Setting aside the Buck of it all, I just really hate this societal narrative that being single at all is somehow sad or pitiful or some sort of failure.
Chris is smart and popular at his school, and Eddie is so proud. 💕💕💕
Eddie may not have told Buck about the street fighting until he probably had to, but at this point I’d say Eddie tells Buck everything. Like the fact that he chewed out Ana Flores for the whole skateboard thing at the school. Heh.
Eddie coming to Buck to talk about his dilemma with Chris and the skateboard. Hello, once again they are best friends in love. Seriously. Do we really ever see any other parents on the show going to their friends with kid issues like this? Rarely, I think.
Just so we’re clear, Ana was definitely being ableist with her horse metaphor speech. And that’s particularly sucky when we consider she’s a teacher at a school that’s supposed to specialize in aiding kids with disabilities and special needs. (T explains it a bit more in her post)
Love the scene of Eddie explaining to Chris that while yes he does have limitations because he has CP, he can still try things. And for now, until he’s older, they can try new things together. Oh, and it’s confirmed in this scene that Eddie does not have a green thumb with plants.
I’ll never be over the fact that clearly Buck helped Eddie build a specialized skateboard for Chris. They’re a family your honor. 🥺
Tumblr media
3x13
Competent Buck with the bowling alley 911 call. 💕 Followed by Eddie lovingly poking fun at Buck. (their teasing is flirting)
“Tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone. So if you love her, tell her.” Eddie says this to Chimney about Maddie…….I wonder when he’ll take his own advice and tell Buck he loves him. ✌️
Oh just a casual scene of Eddie asking Buck if he wants to grab lunch together after work. 😌💕
The bond Michael and Bobby have is so special.
Congrats Maddie and Chimney for confessing your love. 💖
3x14 Honestly not a lot to say about this episode, though it is entertaining.
Idk if it’s because Buck knew who was calling, but his “go for Buck” when answering the phone was funny.
Maddie is honestly a badass.

Today we're visiting the Tia family, where we have our first 2nd generation couple and their kids. I know Lovetar Imago (now Tia) will end up being the oldest teenager of her generation, but I don't care about this lack of sync between families, especially that you know how my mortality rolls go...
At the very beginning of the round the heir, Zet Tia, wanted to ask his new bride on a date, so the newlyweds had their 'honeymoon'.
I was actually really surprised Lovetar kept rolling the 'gain a skill' want. It must have been because her romance wants got fulfilled all the time because of the dates. She behaved more like a knowledge sim than her husband did, besides not wanting to see ghosts. Her husband aspired to see the ghost of his mom, which came true.
The Tia household was also lucky enough to get a genie lamp (probably because Lovetar is a sim who maxed out 2 hobbies). I might make getting the dusty old lamp into some sort of a milestone, just like domesticating the wolves, which will hopefully happen soon.
The weather was quite mild on this lot. Noone was on the brink of a heatstroke and they all even lost their sunburns.
~*~
Zet's younger sister, Mutneferet, was initially rolled to be a Romance sim, but I overrulled it, because I can't just keep having female Romance sims, especially that her brother's wife is already one... So I rolled again and she's a Fortune sim, which fits better. Their father is also a Fortune sim after all, and I like the idea of children sharing goals with their parents, especially if their parents' life dreams were never fulfilled.
Mutneferet managed to get Gold Fishing and Gold Gardening Badges shortly after aging up, which is great.
~*~
Zet and Lovetar's next child managed to survive (so no miscarriages for Lovetar). Unfortuantely, the mother paid the ultimate price for their heir being born...
The baby boy was named Zephaniah. He's a gray-eyed redhead. Both of their kids got the eye colour of their grandmothers. He is an Aquarius, so he shares mother's star sign. Personality-wise he's quite similar to her, with 6 neat and 4 shy points. He's also as active as his dad (7). He has 9 playful, and 9 nice points.
His older sister, Lovi, is an Aquarius as well. She's just as neat (6), active (6), and playful (9) as her mom. She's also as outgoing as her dad (6). And she has 8 nice points. Lovi naturally went into aspiration failure when her mom died, despite having learnt all of the toddler skills and the nursery rhyme.
~*~
Totally off topic CC list, because Satiah's ghost looks a bit different... I got this awesome plantsim skin default. I'm still experimenting with my supernatural defaults, but there are for sure some I like, e.g. the awesome correlated werewolf skins. For now I also put this vampire skin in my game (it has pink eyes). And I got rid of the witch skin and the sparkles... And did I mention I also got the spectral cat mods... and a spectral assistant replacement, as well as a servo replacement... And even a magical broom instead of the cleanbot! I need to get a witch in town some day. And it's spooky season soon!
And yes, I know there are a lot more... I got the supernatural garden and juicer (there's also the wooden version)... There's the fairy mod and the fairy house, but I need to incorporate just the regular occults at first... I know there's TSM Grim replacement, but I like the vanilla one enough.
BTW If you haven't already, definitely grab the favourite colour mod! I use the engagement ring mod and the date flower mod. They're not very historical, but who cares, better than vanilla maxis ones and so customizable!

Febuwhump Day 9: Kidnapped
Warnings: Graphic violence, murder, blood, kidnapping, language, killing spree, use of weapons, a darker Rick, PTSD, childhood abuse, interrogation
“Hey Flag, I found her,” Economos states through a straw, looking at the screen as the red light blinks a signal of your location.
“Well, where the hell is she?”
“Some dust ball called Texola, Oklahoma? Why the fuck would someone take her there?” Rick goes rigid at the mention. Why would someone take her there? Unless, unless they are after him. Clenching his jaw, his nostrils flare as he eyes the screen.
“Alright, I’m gonna get the team.”
“Waller’s not gon-”
“I don’t give a fuck. I’m going after (Y/N).”
“Boy, you better get your ass back in here,” Rick’s father threatens, a leather belt wound up in his hands.
“Richard, please, leave him alone,” Rick’s mother steps between her husband and her son to try to alleviate the tension in the room.
“Get out of the way, woman. Boy over here needs to be punished.”
“It was just a B, dad. I was the highest score too!” Rick frantically looks around, looking for cover from his father’s wrath.
“’Just a B’,” he mocks, harshly gripping Rick’s arm causing the younger man to wince. “No son of mine gonna get a B,” he roars before bringing the belt down on Rick’s rear end.
Rick is snapped back to reality by Harley’s nagging.
“Hey Flag, what’s gotcha day dreamin’?” She slots herself down next to Rick, swinging her legs as Rick sighs.
“Harley, I’m not in the mood.”
“He just missing his piece of ass I reckon,” Digger jokes, fiddling with his boomerangs and Rick shoots him a glare. Digger immediately shuts up.
“Who would even take her to this dump? There ain’t shit here,” Floyd comments as Harley wraps her bat in barbed wire.
“Ya, this is a shit hole.”
“They took her to get to me,” Rick answers, shutting his eyes, his hands gripping his gun a little tighter.
“But why here?”
“I grew up here. In 1992 I moved here with my dad and mom because my dad was placed in protective services.”
“5 minutes til drop,” the intercom comes on and Rick looks over the group he gathered. Despite them being criminals, these were the ones he trusted most. Rick cocks his rifle and stands up, turning to them.
“Kill anyone who isn’t (Y/N),” their eyes widen in shock at their commander’s command and Harley is the first to snap out of it, standing up and throwing her bat over her shoulder.
“This gonna be lots of fun.”
----------
“You’re mistaken, Rick won’t come. He won’t,” you spit the blood out and onto the man, earning a slap across the face.
“If he is half the man I’ve heard he is, he will,” the man grabs a taser and sticks the end to your neck, the electricity effectively knocking you out.
----------
“Alright, we’ll splint into two groups, Deadshot, you and Harley will take the right side. Boomer and I will take the left. We go in together. On my command,” Rick whispers to the team as they nod, preparing for an onslaught. Rick starts creeping in on the building, relatively small and possibly easy to take over; but, Rick doesn’t care. All he cares about is you.
“You're a failure. I can not believe you are my son,” Flag Senior spits, crumpling up the paper and throwing it in Rick’s face as he remains rigid. “You’ll never get into West Point with these grades. You’ll never be anything.”
“Hey Flag, Flag,” Digger’s voice pulls Rick out of his thoughts once he noticed the Colonel had stopped moving. “Come on, mate, snap out of it.” Rick shakes his head, returning his face to the eyesight on his gun. “Yo, you good?”
“’m fine,” Digger and Harley share a look across from the field before shrugging it off. Approaching the door, Rick presses his back against the outside wall, motioning for the others to follow suit. “On one,” he holds his hand up and counts down before kicking in the door, gun up and shooting each person in his way, taking out the henchmen. “Deadshot, get an advantage point.”
“Yes boss,” he rushes up the stairs, leaving Harley and Boomerang with Rick.
“You two, watch my six.” He quickly makes his way through the halls, shooting down everyone he comes across.
“With the way Flag is going, we might not even be needed,” Harley quietly comments to Boomer who only shrugs.
“No harm done to me,” they continue following Rick down the halls. Coming across a big door, the group slows to a halt. Rick takes a shaky breath.
Kicking in the door, Rick surveys the room and sees red. There you are, hanging by your wrists by a chain, beaten and bruised, unconscious and bleeding. “You mother fuckers,” he grits out, raising his rifle and pressing down on the trigger, using rapid fire to plow down person after person.
The gun clicks, a sign showing it’s empty. “Shit,” he unholsters his glock and aims at the heads, brains splattering against the wall before his normally hazel eyes, now a dark brown with anger, fall onto the man standing in front of you.
“Ah, the famous Colonel Flag. I was wondering when you would come and collect your whore.”
“What do you want with me?”
“I want you to pay,” he grins wickedly, pulling out a knife but Rick is quick. He immediately tackles the man and fights him for the weapon.
“Flag, I can’t get a clean shot with you on top of him,” Floyd’s voice vaguely echoes in the back of Rick’s head, but he doesn't pay attention, nor does he pay attention to the way Harley and Digger just sit idly by, kicking the henchmen after doing nothing.
After successfully getting the knife from the man, Rick sits on top, the knife pressing against his throat.
“You wanted me? You used my girl to get to me? Well now you have me,” Rick seethes, all of his principles, morals, and ethics long gone. He plunges the knife into the man’s side, causing the man to scream.  “Didn’t think Flag had it in him,” Boomer picks at his cuticles with the edge of his boomerang as Harley watches.
“Dontcha think we should stop ‘im?”
“Nah.”
‘You’re worthless.’ Stab. ‘You’ll never be anything.’ Stab. ‘You’ll never find love.’ Stab. Stab. Stab. Rick stabs the man one more time before rapidly pulling the blade out, the red blood spraying across his face as he leans back and heaves, staring down at the lifeless man.
Wiping off his face, he stands before delivering a kick to the side, throwing the man over the platform before he rushes over to you and yanks the chains down, you falling into his arms.
“Darlin’? Come on darlin’, wake up,” he shakes your body as you slowly stir awake.
“Rick?” He smiles softly, pressing his lips to your sweaty head.
“Hey baby. It’s okay. I’m here. I’m here.” He holds you close and rocks your body, burying his face into your hair as you look around the room.
“What happened?” Rick pulls back and looks around the room, slightly appalled by the mess.
“What they hell did you guys do?” He gears his questions towards his companions as they laugh,
“We ain’t do shit, mate. That was all you.”
“Yeah Flag, I ain’t neva seen ya like this.” Rick looks up to Floyd.
“Was this really all me?” The assassin nods, pointing to the man who was holding you hostage. Rick looks over and holds back the bile in his throat. Noticing his embarrassment and horror, you quickly pull his face towards you.
“Hey, you did what you had to do to save me. You saved me,” you bury his head in your chest, kissing the top of his hair. “You saved me, Rick.”
----------
Meanwhile, Waller rewinds the tape with an amused smile plastered on her face.
“I never knew he could be so violent.” Harcourt comments as Waller pauses right over the part where Rick digs the knife into the man.
“Neither did I.”

Thoughts on Rei? I feel like I’m in the minority in that I don’t think she’s like morally on Enji level but I also don’t think it’s wrong to feel resentment towards a mother who didn’t protect her kids even if she was a victim too... like I want her to reconcile with Touya and all her kids (glad for her progress!) while I don’t so much for Enji (even if he will probably in the end) so I don’t mean to write her off but... sometimes I feel the fandom gives her a pass because her situation is so tragic and impossible to condemn, yet irl kids do resent the parents who are bystanders and I wish ppl would acknowledge that when saying she deserves no criticism?
Dude this is so weird. @redphlox and I were discussing EXACTLY THIS EARLIER TODAY WHEN WE WERE HANGING OUT WTF. WERE YOU THERE EAVESDROPPING. Lol. Anyway.
Ohhh god. I'm kind of terrified to comment how I really feel because some people get really upset over this but here goes nothin.
Please--if you disagree that is okay. I understand. Do not come to my inbox and be a bitch.
CW: Abuse, domestic violence under the cut
So before I can really comment on Rei I need to lay some things out.
Firstly--I've made it clear on here many times that I work in child welfare. I'm not talking out of my ass when I say the things I do. I find it really hard to converse about the Todofam a lot of the times because I look at it from such a different perspective that there's just a disconnect between what I think and what others think. Which is fine, it really is. Maybe this disclaimer will make sense after you read all of this to come lol.
Also: I am speaking from an American POV. I have said it before but I cannot comment on Japanese protocol for child abuse. But the psychology behind it all is all the same.
Secondly--a lot of people who give Rei a 100% pass do not understand how ugly and complicated family abuse and domestic violence is. I'm gonna have to talk about two different aspects here, because two different things were happening in the Todoroki household: domestic violence and child abuse.
In real life: When domestic violence occurs and children are involved---it does not matter who hit who or who started it or what the fuck ever. Both parents are responsible for the safety of their children. The victim of the domestic violence is held JUST AS RESPONSIBLE for their children's safety. They weren't the ones endangering their children per say, but they are responsible for getting their children out of that situation. By law, they are responsible. If a mother who is constantly abused by her husband fails to remove her children from that mentally and emotionally (potentially physically) damaging environment, BOTH parents are considered guilty for being neglectful of their children's wellbeing. For different reasons obviously, but's that's how it is looked at by law because those children NEED to be protected. They have to be. It does not matter who did what.
Now domestic violence does not always involve child abuse, but in the Todoroki household it did. Which makes it even MORE complicated and ugly. Rei, a mother in distress who is losing control over her life, is still responsible for her children's wellbeing. Touya and Shouto were both being abused by their father. Rei, as a mother, had a responsibility to her children. But could she stand up to Enji?
For Shouto: It's pretty clear that by the time Shouto was being beaten by Enji, she had no control over the situation. We saw her stand up to him once, and she probably tried other times as well. But it didn't save Shouto. We already know Shouto doesn't blame Rei at all, and he hardly views himself as an abuse victim and instead views his mom as the sole victim.
For Touya: This is the reeeaaalllllllyyyy complicated part. We know that when Touya was starting to spiral Rei had some semblance of control. Rei was in a better position to take control of the situation happening with Touya. The truth here is--Touya was abandoned by his dad at a much younger age than when he started really spiraling. Did Rei step in? We don't know. But judging by Touya's reaction to her attempt at helping him, and their disconnect as mother and son--I'd say she didn't step in when she could have early on.
Tumblr media
"You're guilty too, Mom."
Here's the thing, Touya was smart. We know this. He caught on quick to what was going on. Rei's situation with her marriage to Enji aside--she is his mother. She is supposed to protect him. In ALL ways--physically, mentally, and emotionally. And she didn't. She did not protect him from the emotional harm that was being thrown onto him. By this point ^^^^ it was already too late. She didn't protect him and the emotional damage done by Enji was done.
Rei knew the reason she got married. She knew why Touya was born.
Touya has every right to resent Rei for not protecting him.
When you're a child and you're suffering on a daily basis because of one of your parents, and your other parent doesn't protect you? Yes--that is going to hurt. Touya is allowed to hold her responsible. She is his MOTHER.
HOWEVER---before some people lose their shit on me
Rei was in a very complicated position. From Touya's perspective--she did it to herself. That's not necessarily true--but that brings me back to the one FACT that rings true above all else. Rei is his mother and is responsible for protecting his wellbeing.
To put is as simply as I can: Rei is not 100% guilty by ANY MEANS, but she is not 100% innocent. Or rather--her feelings of guilt are justified, and absolutely normal. She did not go out of her way to hurt her children. She didn't . She is not guilty of abusing her children or neglecting them. Her failure lies in where she had room to step into a more protective role of her children--specifically for Touya. She tried with Shouto and we saw how that went. But with Touya the situation was different. It hadn't escalated to that point yet. As soon as the doctor told them to stop having kids--that is when she had the opportunity to step in and try to mend what was already so fucked up to begin with. Would it have worked? Maybe, maybe not. We'll never know. But her attempt that we saw with Touya didn't work because he had already spent years being emotionally abused by his father and watching his attempted replacements be born--one of them being a success. It was too late.
I guess my closing statement on Rei is:
As a mother, she didn't protect her children from mental and emotional harm. As victim of domestic violence, she didn't have any control over the situation. From one of her children's perspective (Touya), she didn't save him. From the other (Shouto), she tried and couldn't. All of those things can coexist. The fact of the matter is--domestic violence is ugly. But at the end of the day--BOTH PARENTS are responsible for their children's wellbeing.
It isn't just ugly and complicated in fiction. It's fucking BAD in real life too. Believe me they're the most complicated cases to resolve.
Needless to say: As a reader, I don't blame Rei at all. I still think the retcon of Enji is fucking bullshit. BUT, Rei feeling guilty as a parent is absolutely normal. It is. Even if she tried her best, for her to FEEL like she could have done more is a normal thing to feel.

Things Left Unsaid -- An Analysis of Rei & Touya
Apparently Rei has been getting a lot of flack lately, all of it undeserved, and since I had a post analyzing her relationship with Touya in the works already, I figured no time like the present.
Disclaimer #1: There are a lot of issues with the writing for Rei’s character that have nothing to do with her and everything to do with how the storyline is using her, which I will address and examine.
Disclaimer #2: I’m someone who, while always curious as to what kind of relationship Rei had with her oldest son before he died, never thought it would be revealed that Touya was close to his mom. I don’t think you get the Dabi we see in Chapters 290-295 without him being so warped by his relationship with his father yet so dependent on his attention that he was willing to kill his brother and himself simply for his father’s acknowledgement.
But that’s what I find so interesting about Rei and Touya -- it’s a relationship that mainly consists of regrets and things left unsaid. There isn’t the anger or resentment Dabi feels for Endeavor, because that intense level of emotion sprung from the loss of the father who used to be his whole world. His feelings toward his mother seem more amicable, but also more distant.
And while she could’ve done some things differently in regards to her oldest, I want to make it clear that the distance between them was very much by design.
After all, Touya was the end goal of their marriage. It was never any secret as to why Enji wanted to marry her and to some extent Rei must’ve realized that this child was not meant to be hers: the child was the transaction, the thing she was needed to create, to give to her husband. Of course she loved Touya and was likely his primary caregiver for most of his life, but there was no doubt that once his quirk manifested and he could begin his hero training, his life would be dominated by his father. Which is what happened.
Tumblr media
Here, I would like to point out something I noticed in the flashback chapters. We never see any panels of Enji alone with any of his children during their infancy -- even with Shouto, the perfect child he longed for, we see Rei holding Shouto, sitting by him as he sleeps. Enji is there tangentially. Once Shouto begins his training, that is when we see him with his father.
So to see Enji with Touya when he was a baby, prior to his quirk manifesting, strikes me as a big deal. But it makes sense if you remember that he’d placed all his hopes, dreams and expectations on his firstborn. Initially, it doesn’t look like he even considered the possibility that Touya wouldn’t be his successor or that his little eugenics experiment would fail; this was his first, most optimistic attempt at a masterpiece. So I don’t believe it’s far-fetched to see him spend more time with Touya right off the bat (it’s what will make the eventual abandonment all the more crushing).
However, Rei isn’t seen at all in the snippet of Touya’s infancy, despite us knowing she was relegated to the caregiver role. Rei is literally out of the picture. Compare this to how she features prominently in Shouto’s infancy or how we see her holding a baby Natsuo. You could argue that, hey, we don’t see her holding a baby Fuyumi either, but there’s other scenes where Fuyumi’s attached to her mother’s hip or crying over her being hurt. Things that suggest a closeness, when the only scene we get of just her and Touya is one where they’re at odds.
As we move further into Touya’s childhood, though, Rei becomes the only voice we hear advocate for him against his father. I’m referencing two specific instances:
Tumblr media
When Enji coerces her into having more children to replace Touya now that his father has deemed him a failure, something she knows will hurt their son deeply.
Tumblr media
And after Touya lashes out at Shouto, which Rei doesn’t blame on Touya, but rather on his father. She delivers such a satisfying condemnation of his actions, probably the most cutting one Endvr’s received to date, and it so accurately sums up one of his major character flaws.
Tumblr media
How can you call yourself a hero when you can’t even face your own son?
The tragedy of it all is that Rei never said any of this in front of Touya -- it was always said in private, just to her husband. That alone took courage, yes, but it would’ve meant everything to Touya to hear her condemn his father aloud. Instead when she does speak to him, she says this:
Tumblr media
It’s why I can’t wrap my head around that scene in Ch 302, where after Enji admits he didn’t know what to say to Touya, Rei replies, “Neither did I.”
When we’re shown in flashbacks during that same chapter that she did understand her son. “He just wants to be acknowledged by you” is quite the indication that she, at the very least, understood the cause of Touya’s turmoil even if she couldn’t fully relate to it herself. So why can’t she say any of this to him?
The answer is in the way she addresses Touya, as it is nearly identical to how Nao addresses Tenko in this scene:
Tumblr media
Both Touya and Tenko grew up in similar households: the father had all the power, physical and financial, so the mothers were left to try and comfort their children in a way that didn’t go against their husbands’ desires -- and so, to use Tenko’s own words, they would “reject them with kindness.”
So it’s no wonder that Touya lashes out at his mother after she suggests he pursue other things. He isn’t five like Tenko was, he’s thirteen and has a much clearer understanding of why she says this and why it’s a bit hypocritical, since he’s aware of her situation, too.
Just as she was bound by her family, who wanted her to marry Endvr for the money and status, he’s bound by the expectations of his family. I’m not sure if I’ve seen anyone else touch on this detail, but when Touya states that he knows his grandparents sold his mom into marriage so his dad could have a child, we could infer that Touya knows enough to realize that his mother might not have necessarily wanted him.
Not him specifically, but any child — the story has neglected to flesh her out beyond her marriage and motherhood, so we have no idea if Rei wanted to become a mother prior to this arrangement, despite how much she loves her kids now — although it is possible that he might’ve internalized it this way.
So you have Touya, who at least knows with certainty that his father wanted him to exist, yet he comes to understand that his father only wants him if he can meet a specific set of expectations, and if he cannot, he’ll be discarded. If he can’t surpass All Might, he can’t fulfill his reason for existing and his father will have to replace him. So to have his mother urge him to follow a path other than becoming a hero would mean, to Touya, accepting that he is the mistake he fears he is. Of course he isn’t going to respond well to that.
I don’t like when people try to compare Touya’s reaction in this moment to Shouto’s when Rei tells him he isn’t bound by his father’s blood, using that to paint Shouto as the “good” child and Touya as the “bad” one. They didn’t react differently because of any innate sense of goodness or lack thereof -- they reacted differently because the situations are different.
Telling Shouto that he didn’t have to be like his father comforted Shouto, who only knew his father as the bully who hurt his mom. He associated his father, and his father’s fire, with all of that fear and pain -- and thus, he associated the part of himself that took after his father with those feelings. She wasn’t denying his dream of becoming a hero, only assuring him that when he became a hero it could be whatever kind of hero he chose to be, that he wasn’t doomed to be like his father.
Whereas what she tells Touya sounds a lot like what his father told him, which was to give up on being a hero and pursue other aspirations.
Tumblr media
Encouraging Shouto to become his own version of a hero still falls in line with what Endvr ultimately wants, which is for Shouto to be a hero capable of surpassing All Might. Whereas this is what happens when Touya continues to train to do that against his father’s wishes:
Tumblr media
This is where the framing begins to bother me and where Rei’s characterization becomes inconsistent.
So in this scene from Ch 302, we see Enji abusing his wife for “letting” Touya continue to train, punishing her for her “failure” to stop him. Obviously, none of that is Rei’s fault. If anything, Enji would be more responsible for preventing Touya from hurting himself since he’s the reason his son is hurting himself in the first place.
Moreover, the fact that he hits Rei over this sort of muddies the water of an previously-established narrative. Since the Sports Festival arc, we’ve known that Endvr abused his wife because she tried to interfere with Shouto’s training. It got to the point where she was terrified of her husband and it drove her to a breakdown. Why introduce this new aspect to the abuse, when it was already established that a) he was physically abusive and b) his motivations for abusing her were explicit to the audience?
I’m not saying it doesn’t make sense that a man who hits his wife for one reason could find another reason to do it and justify his actions to himself. And while the scene does portray Endvr in a bad light to show how wrong his actions are, literally draping his figure in shadow, why does it even dare to suggest the idea that Rei was remiss in her duties as a mother? Again, the scene isn’t even necessary, since the narrative has long-since showed the audience that Enji abused his wife.
By itself, the scene would read as further exploration of how Rei was victimized and how it affected her children. When you look at it with the chapter as a whole, though? Remember, this is the chapter where Rei claims that all of the family shares the blame in what happened to Touya, displacing some of the blame that rightfully rests on Enji.
But my major gripe with this scene is how it reframes the sole moment we get of Rei and Touya alone. Because we know that Rei understands Touya, based on her confrontations with her husband in Ch 301 & 302. Rather than encourage him to be what he wants or acknowledge that his father is in the wrong, however, her advice falls in line with what Enji wants -- to stop Touya from training. And this comes after a scene where we see Enji beat his wife when she doesn’t stop Touya from training.
With all that in mind, it could potentially be read as Rei trying stop Touya for the sake of protecting herself and the family -- I don’t think it’s coincidence that in the scene where he hits her that we see Shouto, Fuyumi & Natsuo all as witnesses who are very distressed by what’s happening to their mother -- at the cost of Touya’s need to be validated. And if executed well or at least better than it has here, that wouldn’t be a bad choice of narrative per se, and it would fit into the pattern where the households the villains were raised in -- notably Shigaraki, Dabi & Toga -- mimic the society they live in, just on a smaller scale.
Except. Does that sort of narrative make sense based on what we already know about Rei?
Certainly, it is natural to want to protect yourself under physical and/or emotional duress by appeasing your abuser. This sort of complicated dynamic appears in the Shimura family, too. Just like in the house that Kotaro built, the Todoroki family revolves around the desires of the abuser and is dictated by his whims.
I would argue that Nao does give us a well-written example of this narrative. From the beginning, it’s established that she loves Tenko dearly. But in the house her husband built, there’s no room to love her son as he deserves. She prioritizes the feelings of Tenko’s father for the sake of maintaining peace in the household and this is established quickly and plainly.
Early on in the flashback, Kotaro exerts his control over the house, while Nao + her parents look uncomfortable. Despite this, we watch as they comply with his rules, all at the expense of Tenko’s feelings. When she stands up to Kotaro at last, it is not where Tenko can see and already too late. It’s a painful story, full of regret and sadness, but it is consistent from start to end. Nobody feels out-of-character or there to prop up anybody else.
So why doesn’t Rei feel as consistent in this narrative?
Because it doesn’t fit with everything we knew about Rei prior to her abuser’s subpar redemption arc.
The way she interacts with Touya would make sense, if this was how she was portrayed from the start. However, her behavior in Shouto’s flashback -- where she was first introduced -- contrasts what we get in the later Todoroki flashbacks.
Tumblr media
Let’s compare this to the scenes in Ch 302. Here, Rei interferes on Shouto’s behalf. She advocates for her son in front of Shouto where he can hear. She stands up to his bully/villain and tries to protect him, while also validating his feelings in the process. Directly after this, Enji hits her, not for failing to comply with his demands, but for defying him.
It is difficult to reconcile this Rei with the Rei we get in Ch 302. And if you try to find an in-story reason for the inconsistency, the options either do a disservice to Rei or make things even more painful for Touya. But I’m sure most of you have realized that I’m going to suggest a reason for this inconsistency that goes beyond the canon.
Because when Rei was first introduced in the story, Endvr was unequivocally the villain in the Todoroki family, not some misguided patriarch trying to atone for his “past” mistakes. Years later and in the midst of his redemption arc, the narrative seems to be intent on making this man more palatable to readers, and it’s used Rei at every opportunity to prop up his efforts to be better. Often, though, it takes some of the heat off Enji by displacing it onto other family members, most significantly Rei & Touya.
Like, you can literally see the difference in the frame from early in the manga to now:
Ch 39: Endvr trains his five-year-old to the point where he’s throwing up due overextension and being punched by a fully grown adult who is also his father. Rei tries to protect her son and gets slapped by Endvr. All the blames rests squarely on Endvr, who is clearly the aggressor and painted as the villain here.
Ch 302: Endvr hits Rei for not preventing Touya from sneaking out to train, knocking her to the ground. Again, Endvr is clearly the aggressor, but oh this time it’s not driven solely by his selfish desires it’s also cocnern for his son; Rei is the victim but oh she also should have been watching him more closely, and oh well why was Touya going out in the first place, when everyone has told him to stop and he knows his mom will get punished for it?
Honestly, I can understand where some people have mixed feelings over Rei’s character, particularly since the writing has done her such a disservice recently. With that being said, however, it takes a minimum amount of critical thinking to recognize that while you can criticize some choices she made, you cannot hold her to the same standard of accountability as Enji, it’s absurd. The power imbalance was obviously tipped in Endvr’s favor, always.
It is a shame, too, that we can’t have more discussions that don’t turn into some readers (a lot of whom are attempting to make Endvr sound less horrible than he actually was) trying to demonize her. It’s doubly a shame the story itself doesn’t bother to flesh her out as a person, instead using her as a prop, because the complex relationships she has with Touya -- with all her children, really -- has plenty of room for exploration.
Like, there was no reason to add this new dimension of resentment due to her spouting Enji’s words back at Touya, when there was already a source of tension supported by previous canon -- the neglect the Todoroki kids suffered because Rei couldn’t be the parent they needed, due to her declining mental health and eventual breakdown.
Or, if you want to complicate their dynamic further, why not add something that focuses on Rei and has nothing to do with Enji? We learn in the flashbacks that Rei agreed to the marriage more-or-less to please her family, lamenting that she “intended to smile through it to the end,” essentially admitting that her hope was she could grin and bear it. It is telling that she had this attitude before entering her marriage; evidently, she was raised with the idea that she should be acquiescent to her parents’ whims and not express herself if she was only going to be contrary. Maybe she didn’t know how to deal with Touya’s very expressive, very emotional outbursts as a result. And her inability to respond would be the exact opposite of what Touya was seeking.
Not to mention that Touya died, and for the last decade, Rei was under the impression she had lost her son forever. He died while she was hospitalized, torn up with guilt over what she did to Shouto, only to find out that her other son died in a frankly horrific manner, and she could do nothing. By the time she would’ve found out, it was too late to even try to do anything. I can’t imagine what she must’ve felt in terms of regret alone, plus her grief. And I’m still mad we were robbed of her reaction to Touya being alive, because now suddenly there is a chance to do something, to change what was once written in stone.
Or what about Touya’s feelings for his mother, that have yet to be given much depth? As the oldest and most aware of his existence, it seems like he was the first to truly understand his mother’s situation and I can’t help but wonder: If Touya knew he vessel for his father’s ambition, and his mother was sold into role of creating/caring for him, did he question her love for him? Once he found out one parent’s love was conditional, it wouldn’t be a leap for him to consider it for the other. And yet if that’s true, Dabi doesn’t appear to hold any ill-will towards her for that. He was angry at her hypocrisy, because he knows she should understand, but her words to him didn’t reflect that.
All of that is fascinating and so much better than what we got in canon, so far at least. I’m hoping for them interact in the present at least once before the end of the series, and I think they will, but as to how satisfying a reconciliation it’ll be, I guess we’ll have to wait to see how the Todoroki plotline progresses from here on out.

Please Fix the Story pt 24 - Sci Fi
The battle with the Hive, and the traveler! Moving onto the end game after this. (Still will take a few parts, but the end is in sight!)
Masterpost linked here.
Enjoy!
_____________________________
The atmosphere in the conference room was tense.
“The numbers don’t look good.” General Gladus stared at the display with a frustrated sigh. “We just have the few Mechs stationed in the Fifteenth Sector. The Hive have a full colony… thousands of drones, directed by a Queen. They have already landed on the nearest moon, destroying the defense base there, and will be within striking distance of the planet in..." He rechecked his numbers. "Eighteen hours.”
Pointing his finger at the hologram, the display zoomed in on the larger dot surrounded by countless other smaller red dots. “The Queen is the key. She controls all the drones. If we take her out, we can halt the invasion long enough for true reinforcements to arrive.”
I nodded, trying to follow along. “So if we don’t have the numbers to defend the planet, we go on the attack and try to strike the Queen?”
“It can take a whole squadron to take out a Queen. “ He quickly put a damper on my excitement, frowning. “A normal Hive drone is the size of a human. She’s larger than two Mechs put together, around six stories tall, with armor to match.”
I thought about the story, what I knew about what technology was available years ahead… Hadn’t Chris gotten a special Mech to fight Queens? “What about a bigger Mech? Big enough to take on the Queen?”
The general paused at that. “The military engineers at the academy have been working on some prototypes… but the bigger a Mech is, the harder it is to control. In a few years we might have one that a single Guardian could operate, but the ones we have now? No one would have the capability…”
“I do.” I interrupted, speaking with certainty. “Let Liam and I try it.”
“Honey, I know you’re a Grade S Guardian, but…”
“I’m more than that. You remember that I almost destabilized? It was because of a sudden increase of my power” Because I’m not really your daughter. “I’m much more powerful than a grade S… “ I reached out and grabbed Liam’s hand. “And that’s not even to mention our 100% resonance match.”
Liam grinned, squeezing my hand. “Trust us, General. Alaira and I can fly anything they can build!”
The General stared at us, obviously unnerved at the idea of sending his daughter into the worst of the fighting. I reached out and grabbed his hand. “Trust me, Dad. I’ll make you proud.”
“…” He let out a long sigh. “I’m already more proud than I could ever be…” He rubbed his forehead. “Fine. Let’s see if you can work the thing… but if you can’t move it perfectly, then the plan gets canceled. I’m not sending you out there to die.”
“Thank you!” Awkwardly hugging him, I felt a twinge of guilt as he patted my back gently.
I wish your daughter could be here to feel your love and pride in her.
“Don’t celebrate too soon… Even if you’re big enough to take on a Queen, we still have to get you to her.”
I stepped closer to the display, studying it. “She’s directly in the center of the army… hiding away on the moon in the ruins of the defense base. With their numbers versus ours… we just don’t have the firepower to get there.”
Warning! Mission Failure Imminent!
As the blue writing and loud warning appeared only to me, I felt no fear, no terror at my imminent doom. It was now more annoying than anything else.
If you're not going to suggest anything helpful, then shut up!
Warning!...
SHUT UP! I screamed in my head, feeling a thread of shadowy power emerge from around me, erasing the words from existence.
The warning fell silent.
What… what was that? Some sort of magic? How much about myself is still hidden in my lost memories?
Enjoying the new silence in my head, I looked over at Liam who was staring at me with a worried look.
“Are you okay? You weren’t responding.”
I reached out, smoothing out his forehead, which was wrinkled with concern. “Yes. It’s difficult to explain, though. What did you say?”
“If we don’t have the troops to blast our way to the Queen, then what about a diversion?” He pointed at the area of the diagram between us and the Hive. “We act like we’re staging a frontal assault, and when they’ve deployed enough forces to weaken the rear, you and I strike from behind!”
The General nodded slowly. “It would take quite an attack to make the Hive divert forces to the front… Even if we threw everything we had and left nothing to protect you two, it might not be enough.”
I grinned. “Don’t worry about protecting us.” Grabbing Liam’s hand I added. “You forget who I matched with. We can handle our own defense. All that’s left is to figure out how to make a big enough distraction to give us a way in.”
“DID SOMEONE CALL FOR A DISTRACTION?!”
Princess Ilene pushed past the guards at the door with the two other girls in her group at her sides. “Sounds like a job for the Harem!”
Liam raised his eyebrow. Harem? He mouthed silently at me. I shook my head, not wanting to get involved.
Alaira’s father did not look impressed. “Princess. I don’t recall you showing any interest in military matters previously.”
“That’s before the Hive kidnapped Chris!” Ilene cracked her knuckles. “Now I gotta go crush some space bugs.”
Who says Chris was kidnapped?
“YEAH!" "We're going to save him!” The other two girls struck dramatic poses on either side of Ilene.
“…” The room stared at them in silence.
I pinched the bridge of my nose, wishing away my headache. “Princess, maybe this would work better if you explained to my father what skills you three brought to the table? “
“… I suppose.” She sniffed, gesturing at Wen grandly. “She has designed a Mech with the ability to tow 50 mini cannons.”
Wen grinned, explaining further. “The guns are strapped to a small engine, and will fly at evenly spaced intervals behind the controlling Mech. It’s still a work in progress… You can’t target, and you can’t control them individually… at least not yet.”
“But that’s still 50 extra shots for one Mech.” General Gladus looked much more interested. “How many have you made?”
“Just one, but if I add a small hologram projector to the guns, it will look like we have 50 fully operational Mechs with us! THAT should get the Hive’s attention.”
Ilene and Allie chimed in. “ We’ve already practiced piloting the Mech and can operate it smoothly.”
“… That… might just work…” He shrugged. “Strong work, Ladies…”
“We call ourselves the Harem… Alaira came up with the name!”
“Don’t credit me, please..”
The General glanced at my cringing expression and chuckled. “…Glad to have you aboard… I think.”
“All right!” The young engineer high-fived her companions, grinning proudly. “I was originally saving this invention for Chris, but now I’m going to use this to SAVE Chris!”
“YEAH!”
“…” The General was now staring at me with a look of consternation, to which I raised my hands helplessly. “…Sure.”
“So that’s the plan then.” I took a deep breath, calming the fast beating of my heart at the thought of the fight to come. “The Harem will distract the Hive, and Liam and I will take out the Queen.”
We’ll save the world.
We’ll complete my mission.
It will work… it has to.
“We’ll strike first thing in the morning.” General Gladus watched me with a worried gaze, but obviously held back from speaking further. “… Good luck.”
_____________________________
Liam and I tested out the massive Mech prototype called the “Queen Killer,” able to move it with an ease that shocked Alaira’s father and the engineers. After confirming the plan a final time, I returned back to my dorm to get some rest before the battle.
I found myself too keyed up to sleep, staring blankly at the ceiling. If we complete the mission, will I get all my memories back? Will I stay in this world or be forced to leave? Will Liam stay with me? My frantic thoughts were interrupted by a quiet knock on my door.
Wary, I checked the security system, quickly opening the door once I realized who it was.
“Liam, what are you doing here? It’s still a few hours before we’re supposed to meet for the mission.”
Liam wrung his hands together, staring at the floor quietly. “I… was hoping…”
“What is it?”
“Can you come with me?”
At my nod he grabbed my hand and pulled me along. I started to ask where he was taking me, but seeing the determination on his face, fell silent. I didn’t feel any wariness, despite my lack of knowledge of our direction.
_____________________________
“Aren’t you scared?” A voice asked, coming from high above me.
“No.”
“Why not?” The despair in the voice was heartbreaking. “Everyone else is.”
“Because it’s you.” I grinned. “Can’t be scared of you, Liam.”
_____________________________
I blinked, my gaze once again resting on our clasped hands.
I’ll keep trusting you Liam.
He took me to the upper deck of the academy, a large platform surrounded by multiple gardens. In the dead of night, the multicolored flowers and trees were barely visible. Rather than a clear sight, it was a combination of the senses: of impressions of movement, of gentle sounds of the wind swaying the branches and leaves, of brief flashes of colors in the light of the multiple candles that lit up the platform.
In the center of the platform stood a minister, the elderly man looking tired but still smiling gently. Off to the side were the Harem girls, watching silently, and Alaira’s father who stood by with a combination of tears and joy.
The King and Queen were nowhere to be seen.
“This.is…” My voice trailed off, filled with awe at the sheer amount of work it must have taken to move everything up here from the ballroom we had planned it in.
Liam knelt down, holding my hand with a solemn look.
“Alaira... I don’t know if we’re going to survive this battle, but I know one thing: If I’m going to die tomorrow, I want it to be as your husband.”
His hands were shaking with nervousness as they held my own.
“Please marry me.” His words were simple, but they struck my heart with a force that made me sway on my feet.
_____________________________
“Please marry me.” A trembling man held me close.
_____________________________
I smiled at the thought that I had answered this question before. “Yes.”
Liam let out a sigh of relief, standing up and hugging me gently. “Thank you…” He hesitated. “Bel.” The name was spoken only for me to hear, sounding like a prayer.
“You realize we had already planned to get married today?” I chuckled. “You didn’t have to re-propose.”
“I needed to hear it again.”
With a wide grin, he led me over to the center of the platform. There, in front of friends and family, the minister led us through the vows. As I spoke the words, holding Liam’s hands tightly, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had done this multiple times before.
How many lifetimes have I already spent with him? How many times have we been married?
Liam leaned in to kiss me, the gentle movement the barest touch on my lips, and then hugged me tightly against him.
“I love you.” He whispered in my ear.
My father stepped forward and clapped us both on the shoulder. “Alright, kids, that’s enough excitement pre-battle. Go get some sleep. I’ll throw you a combination victory party and wedding reception once we survive the Hive.”
Laughing, Liam and I left the party behind. We were unable to sleep, and simply laid in each other’s arms. My head rested against his chest, hearing his heartbeat and breaths. Closing my eyes, I prayed that we would make it though this battle safely.
And just maybe, if we survive this, I’ll figure out how to get our memories back.
I thought of the shadowy power I had displayed to shut the system warning down, an ability I had tried to repeat without success several times since. I don’t know who or what I am… but I do know one thing:
I won’t accept my fate.
_____________________________
Soon it was time for the battle.
Liam and I boarded the Queen Killer Mech and flew it around the battle site, staying out of range of the Hive’s sensors. We floated in Space watching the holographic display from the Mech's communication system as the Harem and the few soldiers Alaira’s father had brought with him advanced from the front. It looked as if there were over a hundred Mechs, an intimidating site, but we knew it was just an illusion, holograms attached to remote guns. Their actual numbers were quite pitiful compared to the army in front of them.
We could only hope the Hive would fall for the trick.
“Advance!” The General’s voice came over the intercom. I felt myself tremble with nervousness at his serious tone. I wasn’t really his daughter. Most of the time I felt like the worst fraud when I was with him. But I genuinely cared for this gruff, strange man. He loved his daughter, and wasn’t afraid to take on the world to protect her.
I hope he makes it. I felt a sharp pain in my stomach at the thought that he might not.
But if we don’t fight, none of us will.
The army of Mechs, both real and fake, moved forward. As the Hive flew to meet them, I got a close look at them through my headset. I had seen their appearance in Alaira’s memories, but somehow, seeing them with my own eyes was all the more horrifying.
Large insects, each the size of a human, with a black and red exoskeleton that coated everything, even the wings. Enormous pincers grew outwards on their heads, sharp enough to tear a Mech open, to cut a human in half. Their dark, multifaceted eyes took in the space emotionlessly. They were unstoppable, insatiable. The Hive’s only goal was to devour, to destroy. They numbered in the thousands; enough to make even seeing the moon the Queen was hiding on difficult.
I felt a deep feeling of terror growing within me, fear and despair mixing, threatening to take away my reason.
It’s not my emotions.I tried to push down the feeling, but they continued to grow, trying to overwhelm me. It’s Alaira’s.
She had died there, next to that moon, surrounded by the Hive. Their pincers destroyed her Mech, pulled her out from the safety of the piloting sphere. She was overwhelmed, and even with the fracturing of her mind she knew she was doomed.
“Are you okay?” Liam’s voice in my ear calmed me down. “Your strong emotions are interfering with the Connection.” I took a deep breath, repeating silently.
You are not Alaira. You are not Alaira.
I knew exactly what it would feel like to die in battle with the Hive, though.
The Hive started swarming to the front, line. The Queen was directing them to defend her against the “larger” threat. There were only a few hundred left to guard the rear.
“It’s working!” General Gladus’ excited voice sounded out. “They’re falling for it.”
“Then we’ll get to work.”
“… Good luck, Alaira. I love you.”
I hesitated. “… I love you too… Father.”
It was time. I grabbed Liam’s hand, squeezing it tightly.
“Focus on your shield.”
He took a deep breath. “You know I can’t control it.”
“You can let me in, Liam. You are in control. Use it for its purpose: to protect yourself. To protect me.”
He closed his eyes, positioning himself behind me within the Connection chamber in the Mech. His hands were on my back, and through the physical touch I felt his nervousness. The air around the Mech seemed to shift, and I knew that I had to act quickly before the mental shield weakened.
I flew the Mech forward, quickly reaching the highest speed. At the noise of our passing one of the drones turned to face us. Soon they had swarmed around us, their pincers opened to attack.
FEAR.
Alaira’s emotions were running full force, but I pushed them down once more, going faster. I could feel Liam behind me, keeping the connection between me and the Mech easy despite its enormous size. We flew into the swarm, and the sturdy alien insects splattered against the mental shield, which held firm under the blows.
Liam and I sighed with relief.
“See? You CAN control it!”
“We still have the Queen to deal with.” Liam’s voice was worried, I could feel his concern though our connection. “She’s a little big to be squished by a shield.”
“Well that’s why we brought the big guns.” After a few more moments we broke through the Hive’s line of defense, and landed on the Moon, trying to locate the Queen.
“Where is she?” The scanners were starting to scramble, as if interrupted by an unknown signal. The Hive shouldn’t have that kind of technology, though.
“I don't see her on the Moon's surface. Has she left? First, let’s try the defense fort. It should be big enough to hide the Queen.” At Liam’s suggestion we flew forward, making our way to the building. The clear defense dome seemed intact, the computers opening an airlock, allowing us to pass forward after communicating with our Mech and confirming our identity.
“How would the Queen be here without destroying the dome?” I muttered, trying to scan the surroundings and noting that it was picking up several lifeforms, even if it was still too scrambled to give a clear location.
“ I don’t know, but I don’t think that hole was there before.” Liam tapped my back, and I looked towards the Hanger, the largest building in the complex. A six story hole had been torn out of the front wall. Wary, I moved the Mech closer, ducking down and entering the main area, which was fortunately tall enough to accommodate our oversized Mech.
The area was mostly lit up, a few of the florescent lights sparking and flickering from recent damage. The few Mechs that had remained had been torn to shreds and tossed in a pile. The space was wide-open, extending outwards into shadows.
“What the…?” My voice trailed off in shock as I stared at the unbelievable sight in front of me.
In the center of the hanger stood the Queen. She was bright white with red and black markings along the side of her rotund torso. She brandished hundreds of spiky claws like a millipede, with large bright red wings extended behind her. Towards the top she sported multiple large pincers, with a final one extending from her head. Her eyes glowed with a bright white light, staring at us with fury.
She was frozen into place, unable to make a single movement.
“What is going on?” I whispered to Liam.
“Bel, you actually made it this far!”
A cheerful voice rang out, causing both of us to groan with frustration. A Mech emerged from the shadows, we couldn’t see the pilot, but Liam and I knew who it was and spoke his name together.
“Chris.”
“I keep telling you, it’s not Chris.” The voice coming from the Mech seemed annoyed, the large robot swinging a sword back and forth. “As always, you two are wrong.”
“What are you doing here?” I asked, clenching my fists at my side within the Connection Chamber of our Mech.
“Exactly what I told you, Bel: I’m ending this.” He lifted up his Mech’s free hand, and in it was a large bomb blinking with a bright red light. A single red button marked the trigger, and I tensed up as he caressed it lightly with a large metallic finger.
“That’s a uninite bomb.” Liam spoke up. “You’d destroy the moon with one that big! You'll kill us all with the Queen!”
“Exactly! I’m willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to save everyone. Not like you… monster.” He spit out the last word, his voice filled with hatred. “I’m the HERO. I’m the one who everyone cares about. I’m the one SHE SHOULD LOVE!”
“Oh, SHUT UP!” I activated the opening on our Mech, and slid down a cord to the ground, pulling off my helmet to reveal my face. The air inside the defense shield was slightly stale but breathable.
Liam was startled, jumping down to stand beside me. “Bel, wait!”
“It’s okay.” I grinned at him. “Trust me.” The Mech straightened up behind us, falling into a standby position. I looked up at the Mech controlled by the Pseudo-Chris.
“If you’re going to threaten me and insult my husband, then do it to my face.”
“Nice try. If I leave the Mech, I can’t control it. All you’ve managed to do is to give away your only advantage!” He laughed confidently. “I am in control, Bel. The Hive, the Queen… all of it! I’m the only one who can save your soul from destruction.”
“You brought the Hive here… you’re the one who advanced the story so quickly.” I paused, thinking it over. “How come you can go against the story? I always get warnings whenever we stray too far away from our characters.”
“You don’t understand. You never have. All that matters is that the roles are obeyed, that we follow our fate. I may have taken a… detour… but in the end I will fulfill my role as a hero, and save everyone, at the cost of my own life.”
“Why are you doing this?” Liam growled, standing close to me.
“He was hoping that I would give up.” I answered for him calmly, staring up at the Mech with a disgusted expression, “He made a seemingly impossible situation, hoping I would see accepting my fate as my only option.”
I thought of the system's warning that I had no chance of survival. They had tried to manipulate me. Tried to force me to do what they wanted.
But I hadn't.
“You see things so clearly sometimes, Bel.” Chris’ voice showed his approval. “And even though it didn’t work, I can still just end things here. I’ll destroy the Queen, which will complete your mission. The system can erase your memory again and we’ll start over.”
I felt a sense of fear at his words. How many times has this already happened?
“No matter how many times we have to do this, there will only be one outcome in the end: you will accept your fate.”
_____________________________
“You will accept your fate, Bel.” The young handsome man stared at me with disappointment. “You can’t keep hiding with this monster forever.”
“He's not a monster. Besides, you’re the one who sent me to Liam.” I grinned. “You have no one to blame but yourself.”
“It was temporary. You were supposed to be his prisoner.” He snapped. “Now, because of you, he’ll be the first to be destroyed. You can’t distort the higher realm. Everything depends on it.”
“It’s not right…”
“It’s the reality of our roles. Now enough stalling. What will you choose? Will you follow the rules, or will you let everything be destroyed to protect your precious independence?”
“No…”
“Even you can’t be that selfish.” He growled, reaching out to grab my arm painfully. “Accept your fate, Bel.
“NO!”
_____________________________
“NO!” I shook my head, clearing aside the memory. “No matter how many times you ask me. No matter how many worlds you drag me through. No matter how many times my memory is wiped. I WILL NOT ACCEPT IT!”
“Fine. Then it’s time to move to the next world…” His Mech raised its hand holding the bomb.
“You’re pathetic.” My words were quiet, but seemed to echo in the otherwise silent hanger. “Even when we were in the higher realm you were always trying to trick and scheme to get things to go the way you wanted. You thought by forcing me to Liam’s side as his ‘prisoner’ you could force me to accept my fate, but that backfired too, didn’t it?”
“… “ There was a long stunned silence.
“You… you remember?” The Mech’s head shook back and forth in a jerky movement. “No, your memories were wiped!”
I quickly thought through the few memories I had experienced over the last few weeks. “You wanted me to play my part… but I didn’t want to be in a romantic relationship with you. I would solve things my own way, which pissed you off.”
“YOU… NO! YOUR MEMORIES ARE GONE!” The whole Mech was shaking slightly.
“No matter the realm, no matter the roles we play, one thing remains constant: you’re a pathetic loser.” I smiled. “And I like Liam more than you.”
“HE’S A MONSTER! YOU CAN’T LOVE HIM! YOU HAVE TO LOVE ME!”
“Bel…” Liam whispered. “You realize you’re making the unstable man with the bomb angry, right?”
“Trust me, I have a plan… probably.”
“Oh, good.”
I looked up at the Mech, raising my voice. “I’ll never love you!”
“YOU HAVE TO!”
“Get used to disappointment, loser.”
The Mech was shaking more violently as he whispered hoarsely. “Y-you’re lying… you have to be. You don’t have your memories…”
I AM lying. “Too bad for you I’m telling the truth. I remember everything important.”
“…Then what’s my name?”
I spread my hands out helplessly. “Oh buddy, I just said I remembered everything IMPORTANT.” I leaned forward. “You were never important to me. You still aren’t.”
“SHUT UP! SHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUPSHUTUP!” The Mech was rocking back and forth with his screams and then suddenly became very still.
“Got him!” I pumped my fist in the air victoriously.
“What’s… what’s happening?! I can’t control my Mech!”
I chuckled at his panicked tone.
“You see, there’s a difference between you and me. You might be the hero, but I’m the one with greater than Level S Guardian abilities. In fact, you used that very trait of mine to try to force me to partner with you. It was a burden before I formed a Connection with Liam, but now?” I reached over and grabbed Liam’s hand. “It makes things really easy. One of the skills I’ve practiced was controlling Mechs from a distance.”
“That’s…”
“Impossible? Only if you’re weak. The distance makes things challenging but it’s still fairly simple for me.” I paused. “By the way, I WAS lying earlier. I needed you to have strong emotions to disrupt your Connection with your Mech so I could take it over.”
“…” Enjoying his stunned silence, I gestured, controlling the “Queen Killer” Mech to step forward.
“Now I could let you blow yourself up and kill the Queen to complete the mission, but unlike you, I don’t feel any satisfaction out of sacrificing myself or others needlessly. I’m also not going to let you die, because I have a feeling that could have negative effects on this world.”
The Queen started moving, whatever restraints the pseudo-Chris had placed on it obviously released. I could feel her anger at being obstructed in her mission. Her overwhelming need to consume life and move on drove her constantly, and even the briefest of pauses enraged her. Her hungry eyes focused on me, sensing a threat.
I released all my abilities to the limit, feeling a light throbbing headache at controlling two Mechs at once, and one of them being the large Queen Killer.
“It’s time for this story to end.” I whispered, feeling satisfaction as the giant robot pulled out a sword and brandished it.
“My mission will be completed.” The sword tore a huge rent in the Queen’s side, spilling green blood. The insect queen screamed in rage and pain, her pincers tearing off some of the armor on the Mech’s arm.
“The world will be saved.” A second strike hit, cutting off several claws. The Queen clamped onto the Mechs’ chest with her mandibles, trying to burrow into the center. I was glad I wasn’t in the suspension gel, feeling the pain of the attack.
“And it will all be done without you.” My Mech swung the sword downward, and the Queen’s head separated from its body. It still clamped onto the chest of the robot, its eyes’ light slowly fading away.
“NOOOO!” Pseudo Chris screamed out, but it was too late. The Queen was dead. Her army would become useless.
The world was safe.
A beautiful chime rang out, and bright blue words formed into the air.
Congratulations!
Mission 100% complete.
**** You have finished the mission! ****
Stay in this world?
YES/NO
“It doesn’t matter if you completed the mission or I did. I still have the next world, and the next and the next!” The Mech was still frozen into place, but it didn’t stop his angry words. “Time is on my side!”
I sighed. “No. It’s not.” As I had completed the mission, I felt a strange surge of power. A similar sensation to when I had stopped the system voice from speaking earlier. I focused carefully, and a shadowy power poured out in the world around me, much stronger than before.
“Bel?” At Liam’s worried question, I turned and smiled at him.
“Don’t worry, Liam. It’s just time to change the game.” He grabbed my hands and nodded silently at my words, supporting me.
I turned my attention to the System’s message.
“We will not stay in this world any longer.” The shadowy power around me increased.
WORLD TRANSFER FAILED. UNKNOWN INTERFERENCE.
“Oh, that’s just me. You see… this world’s victory was all I needed to finish piecing together my soul.”
“I really do remember everything now.”
And I did. Who I was. Why I had made the deal I had made.
“I fixed every world you sent me to. Without memories. Without my protected status as the heroine. Just a hated side character or villain. Admit it… I won.”
… NOT YET.
“You’re right. There’s still one last story to be fixed.” I grinned at Liam, leaning forward to kiss him on the cheek. “The Higher Realm.”
Our world.
YOU MUST ACCEPT…
“I must do nothing.” The dark power that surrounded me erased the blue words in the air before they could form that hated sentence. “YOU must transfer us back. Back to the beginning.”
“Do it.” I gave no room for argument.
WORLD TRANSFER INITIATED. LOCATION: THE HIGHER REALM.
“I love you Liam.” I hugged him tightly. “Let’s get married one last time.”
“I love you too… But what do you…?”
TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Reminiscences
It's been a shit week. Eddie thought talking to his dad might give him some closure about the way he was raised but all he got was "I did that to protect you" and "if it were Chris you would have done the same." It felt pointless and Eddie dreaded having to show up to his next session just to tell Frank he had failed, trauma unaddressed and unresolved, because his dad was a brick wall of excuses.
That's what led him here. A bar to drown his sorrows, except drinking has never been a solitary activity for Eddie so he's barely touched his beer but has gone through 3 glasses of water. He likes this bar though. He has fond memories of it. Saturday afternoons they would open early for dry hours and square dancing for high schoolers. By 8 they'd all be shooed out so they could close and reopen as an actual bar but just the option to go hang at a Real Bar was very exciting to a 16 year old Eddie.
Too much reminiscing has happened. Dredging up long dormant sad moments for the purpose of reminding Eddie it didn't just start in Afghanistan, it's been a steady decline maybe since forever and maybe it's his dad's fault or maybe it's his but what matters is that Eddie has to descend into the blackness of his history to find the man he wanted to be buried deep below a rockslide of failures and missed opportunities.
"Edmundo!" His full name shakes him out of his maudlin. It's not his father, thank Christ, but it is someone who must know him, even if he can't place the face immediately. The man dragging another by the hand is a rich brown, much darker than Eddie, and handsome, so so handsome. His smile ignites a thrill in Eddie's stomach that he hadn't felt since high school. "Hey, remember me?"
"Julio Quezada." Eddie could never forget him.
"Heyyyy, you remember! I'm touched!" Julio had always been suave around Eddie, slightly flirtatious in a casual way that made Eddie feel like... like he was being wooed. The thrill in his stomach was full on butterflies now. "I didn't realize you were back in town!"
"I wasn't about to leave a bulletin in the Times"
"You should have. Hometown Hero Eddie Diaz Returns" Julio spells it out in front of him with a wave.
Eddie can't help but laugh. The man next to Julio clears his throat.
"Oh right, uh, Eddie, this is my husband Marc." Husband. Husband. Husband. Eddie's shattered self image hates the word, he was never a good one but he hears it come so sweetly from Julio and he wonders, could he have been a better one, had things been different?
"Enchanté" Marc says
"Marc, this is Eddie Diaz, my friend from high school." Marc whispers something in Julio's ear and suddenly Eddie's ears are red. He can only imagine what Julio has told him about them, about their history, a history written in secret moments and Ramon's hissed whispers of things boys aren't meant to do. Julio chuckles. "Yes that one."
"Um. Hi. I... I'm glad Julio found someone worth his time." Humor as a defense is something the army teaches as surely as shining your boots.
"Thanks. I'll leave you two to talk. Babe, I'll find us a booth." Oh. Ok. This is what's happening.
"Thanks, hon." Oh God this is what's happening. Eddie fights to keep his breath steady as Marc walks away. "Hey, Eddie, you okay?" Julio places a hand on Eddie's back and the butterflies chase the panic away.
"Yeah. I'm good." I'm not. "I just wasn't expecting this today."
"Well it's not like I tracked you down." No, he had gone to this bar because this is where It happened for the first time. The first time he looked at Julio in his dark eyes, saw his beautiful smile and thought things he never expected.
"Yeah, I was," he bites his lip. "Reminiscing, I suppose."
"By the jukebox right?" Yeah, by the jukebox
"You know they replaced it with some touchscreen doohickey that can play 10,000 club songs? I tried to play Angel and ended up playing Calling All Angels"
"Wasn't a bad first kiss song." Julio says, snagging Eddie's barely touched beer for a sip. So it was time to stop dancing around it then.
"You apparently thought so." A quick peck on his lips while Shaggy played in the background. Julio was way braver than him and it was times like that that Eddie both cursed that fact and was thrilled by it.
"So is that why you came here then? Reminiscing?" He asks, a little teasingly.
"That is a loaded question. You mean here the Tavern or here El Paso?"
"Either."
"I'm in therapy." Julio exhales an 'oh' while Eddie continues. "My therapist thinks I need to like... get at everything by digging down to the first trauma and for the longest time I thought that was Afghanistan."
"A reasonable conclusion."
"Thanks, but, I mean, Julio, let's be honest, the worst day of my life happened way before that."
"We weren't doing anything papi honest!"
"I saw you, Edmundo, you and that boy, you can't be doing that."
"But I-"
"No Edmundo, you can't. Boys aren't supposed to do that and if someone else sees you you could get hurt."
"Yeah, that day kind of sucked." It was the day the Quezada children were blanket banned from the Diaz household. Clarissa Quezada didn't understand why she was being punished for some secret offense her little brother had commited but she also didn't fight it, she and Sofia saw each other at church and school enough anyway.
"I don't know how badly it affected you but it was the beginning of a snowball rolling downhill for me."
"I was heartbroken."
"Me too." Eddie had figured as much. "And I did something very stupid and unfair to you."
"Getting a girlfriend isn't unfair."
"It is when you do it because you need to convince your dad that That Boy was just a phase."
"I take it my name is still banned at Casa Diaz?"
"I thought my dad was going to explode when I asked if you still lived in town."
"Did your mom ever find out?"
"No, she still thinks we had a fight and stopped being friends after that."
"Hell of a fight." Julio smirked. The only bruises left from that "fight" were on each other's lips... and necks, once or twice.
"Hey man, I don't blame you for playing it safe. It was 2003!"
"I'm sorry." Eddie says suddenly. "I'm sorry I didn't fight harder. For us."
"I do. I blame myself for letting you go and giving into my dad and dating Shannon because he said so and for running away."
"If you hadn't run there would be no Marc though," Julio says glancing to his husband patiently scrolling his phone at the other end of the bar. "Because you and me? We would have run away together."
"Yeah." Eddie can't argue with that. "We would have." They had discussed it, there were internet articles about Massachusetts and how same sex marriage might be legal there soon and they, two 17 year old kids, had wondered aloud if packing up after graduation and moving to Boston was the best option for them.
"I'm glad we didn't." Julio grabs his hand "I'm happy with my life and I hope you will be too one day."
"Thanks, Julio." Eddie smiles sadly to himself. "I hope so too."

Wonder Egg Priority, Episode 7: The Scars to Prove It (or, Love for the Moms, the Cutters, and the Drunks)
Tumblr media
Wonder Egg Priority (WEP) has felt like the successor to Puella Magi Madoka Magica in many ways throughout its run, but in episode seven, it almost went full Madomagi by driving the stakes to their utmost height—to the death of one of the main characters. But as has been consistent with WEP, what it did instead, after some moments of true worry, is to instead deliver hope in the face of pain, resolve against overwhelming circumstances, and strength in weakness.
The series returns to Rika Kawai’s story in this episode, which starts with her turning 14. And on her 14th birthday, after leaving her hungover mother halfway asleep at the bar she works at and which they call home, Rika opens up to the rest of the girls, explaining that she doesn’t know her father (it could be any of five possibilities, or even more) and her mom won’t reveal any further information about him. As she trashes her mom, Neiru and Momoe are incredulous, which only drives Rika away from them. And though Ai goes to comfort her, Rika is in a terrible state of mind as she enters her next fight.
Tumblr media
This was a difficult episode to watch. They’ve all been somewhat hard since the series never shies away from brutal and violent situations impacting young people, but I found myself squirming especially here as Rika’s cutting takes center stage. At one point, she decides to cut herself and it seems certain she will, before her turtle-like partner, Mannen, prevents it from happening.
Challenging, also, is how strained Rika’s relationship is with her mother, who’s life revolves around drink—alcohol both pays the bills and helps her forget how miserable her existence is. And in the midst of all the bad behavior in this episode—the usual Rika talk, her mom’s alcoholism and neglect, and the selfishness all around, one begins to feel deeply sorrowful for the Kawai women. Yes, Rika is often obnoxious, but her family life is in shambles, and she still exhibits goodness, including a curiously gentle relationship with Mannen. And Rika’s mother is a tragic figure, used by men and quite on the road to an early death, it would seem, unable to lift herself out of the gutter as she tries, in her own sloppy way, to protect and reach out to her daughter.
Tumblr media
It’s in this hopelessness that Rika turns again to cutting, and then finds herself tempted by something even more dangerous. Her foe this time is a religious leader who led the egg, a follower who continues to believe in him, to commit suicide as a way of “connecting” with the universe (Heaven’s Gate, anyone?). Rika decries the ghoul as a charlatan, but is confronted with her own weakness when the egg shows her own scarred arm to Rika, revealing that she can tell that the latter cuts just like she did. And then she explains that Rika can be released from this pain.
Tumblr media
The scars, evidence of what Rika does to cope with her pain, now become the weakness that they truly are, revealing how hopeless she feels, and how powerless she is against the mechanizations of her family life. And defeated, she’s about to allow herself to be killed when a surprising savior comes along—a turtle. Mannen attacks the spiritual leader, to Rika’s surprise as well, until she remembers that he has imprinted on her. Rika is Mannen’s mom, and as he did when he prevented her from cutting, Mannen is again protecting his mother.
Tumblr media
The conclusion that Rika reaches is unusual but inspiring. She understands, in this moment, the need to protect one’s mom, finally admitting to herself in a de facto way that maybe her mother is in need of love, too. It’s funny to consider the need that mothers have for love since culturally and socially, they’re always seen as the providers of it. But of course, they need it in return, especially when they falter. My own mother is sick right now, and I think of the support I need to give her and the lack of that I’ve provided through the years.
Warning: Screenshot involving cutting after the jump.
My mother was a good one, however. Rika’s, on the other hand, has struggled with the charge, which reminds me of a story from one of my favorite books, The Ragamuffin Gospel, about another bad parent—a far worse one, in fact, and a real one. I’ll quote part of the passage from chapter seven:
“‘Our daughter Debbie wanted a pair of earth shoes for her Christmas present. On the afternoon of December 24, my husband drove her downtown, gave her sixty dollars, and told her to buy the best pair of shoes in the store. That is exactly what she did. When she climbed back into the pickup truck her father was driving, she kissed him on the cheek and told him he was the best daddy in the whole world. Max was preening himself like a peacock and decided to celebrate on the way home. He stopped at the Cork ‘n’ Bottle–that’s a tavern a few miles from our house and told Debbie he would be right out. It was a clear and extremely cold day, about twelve degrees above zero, so Max left the motor running and locked both doors from the outside so no one could get in. It was a little after three in the afternoon and…’
Silence.
‘Yes?’
The sound of heavy breathing crossed the recreation room. Her voice grew faint. She was crying. ‘My husband met some old Army buddies in the tavern. Swept up in euphoria over the reunion, he lost track of time, purpose, and everything else. He came out of the Cork ‘n’ Bottle at midnight . He was drunk. The motor had stopped running and the car windows were frozen shut. Debbie was badly frostbitten on both ears and on her fingers. When we got her to the hospital, the doctors had to operate. They amputated the thumb and forefinger on her right hand. She will be deaf for the rest of her life.'”
Max—a real person, mind you—was a successful, well-liked man, but his drinking problem led to an unconscionable decision and profound failure as a parent. And yet, this book is about grace, an idea which to humans feels unjust, but  which has the power to change hearts and tear down walls, sometimes literally.
Could Max be given grace? Could Rika’s mother? If not directly, she’s done her own physical damage to her daughter in the form of those cutting scars (difficult and perhaps triggering images below). As mentioned earlier, the egg that she’s helping knows her pain and insists that letting go of everything, including life itself, is the way to peace. After all, to a young, suffering girl, what else could these scars mean?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But in the midst of giving up, in the moment that she actually capitulates (and this episode takes you 99% to the edge, both in the cutting scene and in the apparent death scene), Rika experiences something powerful. She experiences grace.
Have you ever been challenged to forgive someone when you don’t want to, when you feel completely in the right? Maybe it’s easy for you, but perhaps it isn’t. The girls surrounding Rika experience differing degrees of this with her sometimes maniacal and often hurtful behavior. Ai forgives easily. Momoe gets fired up and then equally seeks to make peace. And Neiru…well, Neiru holds onto “justice” more than love (setting up what I imagine will be the most powerful transformation in the series of all, in true Homura fashion). But in the moment that Rika is about to give her life, the girls yell out their love for her, even Neiru, and then more profoundly, without any hesitation, Mannen puts his own life on the line to stop the death from occurring. Rika has already given up, but this turtle hasn’t—not for his mother, whom he loves very much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And experiencing that love from a different angle, Rika is changed just a bit. She begins to see her weakness as a “mother,” failing her turtle-child, and thinks of her own mom who is overwhelmed by hurt and a failure as well. And if just a little—for as the final scenes indicate, it is just a little—the path toward forgiveness begins.
Tumblr media
But a little bit of grace is like a little bit of a flood—its power overwhelms, and it defeats the enemy, whether that means bitterness, a physical person (or manifestation of one), or the devil himself.
When Rika returns from the event, having killed the cult leader monster, it’s interesting to note that she isn’t a wholly different person. She’s changing little by little. And her scars remain. In fact, as she admits, she probably will cut herself again. But strangely enough, those scars now represent something different. They show someone trying—failing, yes, sometimes considerably and maybe very often—but trying, and only able to try because love was shown her, and through that, she is now able to show love as well.
You may have such scars in your life, physical or emotional, battered by the world and by people. I hope that you can develop relationships that help you heal as well, and that you’ll also remember that there are other scars which are meaningful to you, but which you cannot see on your person, scars that were borne out of a desire to heal you. Christ took the piercings, on his head, hands, feet, and side, so that while your heart and flesh may be cut, your soul need not be. And through his wounds, you may be healed.
The grace offered through Christ is one that, as he explains about everlasting water at the well to the Samaritan, for now and through eternity. The egg seeks peace forever by dying, but Jesus, unlike the cult leader, died for us so that we may not have to. He took the nails, the cross, and the spear so that we don’t have to inflict pain on ourselves and receive the punishment of our actions against him and others. He is our scar.
That’s grace. That’s the power that it has. And it can reach anyone—even a terrible dad, an alcoholic mom, a tempestuous child, and, and most significantly and personally—you.
Tumblr media
If you’re suffering and in pain, maybe self-inflicted, we encourage you to explain such to a parent or trusted adult and ask for help. It’s a difficult first step, but one that will help you begin recovering. And we also advise that you turn to Christ for help—in prayer, community, and scripture. He provides people to us that will aid us in our times of need, as well as himself and the Holy Spirit if we are believers.
Additionally, there’s a scene in this episode where triumphant, Rika concludes that cutting is okay. That’s said in the context of her moving forward bit by bit and forgiving herself for her failures, even the upcoming ones. That’s an important lesson, though we must certainly be careful not to let it be a license to continue cutting with impunity.

Abourt Rei Himura and BNHA Chapter 301
Now that I've read the official release of chapter 301 I can finally try to gather my thoughts. I think this time the particular rendition of dialogues and inflections provided by Caleb Cook is more crisp and clear than usual, especially in throwing "shade" upon Endeavor as a father figure. But let's do things in order...
Title: THE WRONG WAY TO PUT OUT A FIRE - a simple, but stark message that doesn't leave space for ambiguity. There was a fire, an imminent tragedy that could and should have been avoided, but whoever tried to fix it, did it all wrong and now we have to deal with a huge arson.
CARLESS HANDLING OF FIRE, on the other hand, doesn't quite cut it for me, because it seems like everything was caused by a foolish mistake. "I was carless and now I'm in a pinch"- type of situation, while it's perfectly clear that Endeavor and Rei decided purposefully which "strategy" to use with Touya. A BAD one to say it lightly. Rei's contribution and complicity is debatable, of course, and I'll touch on this later.
Let me get this clear though: I'm not trying in any way to critique the hard work of unofficial translators. I can't say anything relevant because I'm not a translator in the first place (I can barely understand English and my native language on a good day) and also because I am so grateful for everything they do in order to give us really good material FREE OF CHARGE basically a second after the release in Japan. I'm just interested about the different shades of subtext we can catch if we read the story through multiple filters. Every translation is unique because it carries the personal spin of the author even if the bias should be inexistent or ideally undetectable...
However, back to the chapter
REI'S CAGE
The first scene opens on a luxurious classic Japanese villa, with Enji, Rei and her parents discussing the motivation behind Enji's proposal. Or at least we initially think that's what's going on... Because in reality Rei's family couldn't care less about the motivation. Everything these people see is a wealthy, famous guy the next number one hero ready to take their daughter in marriage. I guess the Himuras are pretty broke, thight on cash, their old prestige is definitely gone and all they can do to save themselves from shame and poverty is "to sell" their only remaining asset.
During the whole ordeal, Rei is standing still, silent, cold as ice. She knows she doesn't really have a choice. How mortifying and sad is this? An adult, capable woman has no agency whatsoever, she is used again and again and she stoically accepts this treatment from every single dominant figure in her life until she can't be stoic anymore. I really hope Horikoshi's going to give her a much more proactive role in saving her family and it seems the narrative wants us to expect this type of character development.
I'd like to point out 2 panels in particular:
First one
Tumblr media
In this scene the Todorokis are back from their trip to the doc, who clearly said they shouldn't try to conceive a child with a perfect quirk mix because it is dangerous (and morally questionable too). Rei understands this fact and tries to dissuade Enji, but he doesn't listen, because he's projecting all his pent-up resentment and frustration onto Touya. He knows how it feels to crush against an unbreakable wall, since he can't surpass All might and his son can't too. He had to learn this truth the hard way, so Touya needs to do the same. Enji is purposefully throwing upon his son years of failures, self consciousness and despair, just because the boy has to get it into his thick skull that he is a dud, just like his father. This is not a hopeless dad making a mistake bona fide, this is a broken man trying to destroy his self reflection by proxy, annihilating everything Touya is, swiping the kid's identity under the rug. He describes his son's dreams and sadness as something birthed from stubbornness. He is auto-convincing himself however (because Endeavor is not stupid). A little bit later he's basically saying: "Touya let's play make believe! We can go on like everything I had engulfed in your psyche never existed, you're a failed attempt so you don't exist. Your needs and wants are silly and useless, nothing worth dealing with now that I can't make you my prodigy. Why don't you go play with the other failures so that I don't have to look at myself while taking actually care of you. I don't want to see you, because it's too painful, because you're a remainder of my own inadequacy."
Note: If you want to read an incredibly well done analysis about Endeavor's motives and psyche, you can get it on @thyandrawrites , she's dwelt on everything extensively and way better than me.
I really want to talk about Rei though. In the panel I showed above, her expression is a bit tricky to analyse. At first she is very vocal about her position. She doesn't want to put Touya through useless suffering, especially since they have a scientific reason not to. They have no guarantee of success with other children, besides, they could possibly have to deal with other health related issues. However, all it takes to convince her in the end is Enji's half assed attempt at the "It's for Touya's sake" shtick. Is it really? Why doesn't she question her husband anymore?
Well... I think before Natsuo, she was probably hoping Touya would let go "naturally", with time and growth, maybe by taking interest in his other siblings. Rei said she wanted to have more children because in her mind they would have supported and loved each other. Maybe she was naive enough to think that a big family full of kids few years apart from each other was all Touya needed to distract himself from his purposes... BUT and here is the point I want to get across: She was deluding herself too, much like Enji. The ugly truth, in my opinion, is that Rei is a person prone to protect herself by going with everything other people want, especially if said people are capable of hurting her. Yes, she was hurt time and time again, but what would have happened if she really tried to stop Enji?
What I am trying to say is that Rei is the kind of person who endures to survive. She holds a "captive" mentality in which, by indulging her captor's desires, she can continue living with less possibile damage. If I stay still and silent, if I don't make a scene, I can go on, I can hold onto the few things I have that actually make me happy.
Let's think about it... Enji was so obsessed with his psychotic, power-hungry quest that he would have probably disown Rei. She would have been thrown away for a more compliant woman with an ice quirk, or something similar, this resulting in her probably losing everything, the respect and love of her family (the Himuras) and also her own children. Because we know Endeavor can definitely hold a grudge and is vendicative.
So, clarifying, Rei doesn't put up a fight because she is scared for herself in a way... She is scared to be hurt in the worst possible way (by losing her little bit of serenity), so her strategy is to endure and to keep up a facade of control and purpose.
Rei, ironically just like Touya and other characters in mha, doesn't really get what unconditional love is. Her family loves her until she can be useful to the Himura name and status, her husband loves her for her quirk. Her children, however, love her for who she is and she wants to stay with them... Only to be forced to leave them later anyway.
The few times Rei actually smiles are when she is with her babies. She is a deeply loving mother in her core, but her declining mental health makes her a very lacking caregiver.
Tumblr media
This panel, in my opinion, shows the point of no return for Rei. She can't keep the glacial facade forever...
After Natsuo's turn to be deemed a failure, Endeavor is crazier than ever, because All Might is as popular and loved as ever and he hasn't make any progress into his eugenetic games. The last two images of Rei are very telling. She is exhausted, but she knows what her husband wants from her this time too. She looks like a lifeless doll and honestly I can easily see Shouto's conception as... Non consensual and I will stop here.
Then Shouto is born, the last, perfect specimen... And Rei isn't doing much for Touya, we can see she's apparently blind towards her eldest son's distress already after Natsuo's birth... But why?
Because she is actively avoiding to face the Touya's problems too.
If Touya is still suffering, is still feeling stressed and worthless, then everything Rei has endured, everything she pretended not to feel for the sake of her family has been completely useless. What Rei cannot look at is her own parental failure, is the concrete proof that while protecting herself and her peace she did not protect her children too, because the two interests were never really aligned, even if she really believed so. She never had a functional family to preserve in the first place and everything she accepted to do was all for the sake of a false sense of belonging.
However is too easy to say she should've rebelled against Enji and dumped his sorry ass. Abuse traps you and your abuser too in a cage tricky to escape.
What I imagine will happen next chapter is one of two things:
Enji stops Touya by using brute force, probably also saying something really scarring to reinforce the notion that Shouto is the only child he cares about.
Rei stops Touya by using her quirk. This act could be considered by Touya another confirmation that even his mother actually does something by her own accord only when Shouto's safety is at risk
Necessary conclusions
I don't blame Rei for her actions too much. She is a victim turned abuser by circumstances, but more importantly she's actually taken mesures to prevent herself from hurting her children again. She's trying to heal for her family's sake, really this time. Ten years spent dealing with guilt and having actual therapy seem a good plan to me. And now she's the one ready to snap Enji back to reality.
Enji, on the other hand, is trying too. It's too little too late, but if he stops avoiding reality and hardly works on understanding his family's point of view I don't think he is completely unredeemable. I don't see him surviving his last confrontation with Touya, thought... But I could be totally wrong.
Obviously everything I've said it's my personal analysis on Rei's character, as I interpret her actions and words, so feel free to contradict me and/or to add anything you might see fit.

Draco admires you with your kids and their friends
SOFT || Draco Malfoy
Requested: Yes Pairing: post-war Draco Malfoy x fem!reader Warnings: one minor injury that involves blood but other than that, nothing!
WORDS : 1767
~
“Cass, come on, please put that down?” Draco asks with an exasperated tone as he runs after your daughter- who’s running around the living room with an evil giggle. “Scorpius, don’t you dare-“
Draco gets cut off by the sound of glass shattering as your son, Scorpius, and his friend, Liam, drop a vase off the table. He stops mid-run and sighs heavily as he runs his hands down his face.
Draco has always wanted children. For as long as he can remember he’s wanted children so that he could fill the gaping hole that was left by the lack of affection from his father. But that same hole, that very same resulting trauma, has always made him think that he just can’t do it, that he’ll end up exactly like his own father. And it’s always moments like these that make him doubt his abilities, moments like these that make him wonder if in comparison to his own father he’s too soft.
Draco would’ve never gotten away with half the stuff that your children do at this age, but also he never really had much of a childhood anyway. In a way, being a stay-at-home dad helps him make up for that and recover long lost moments of adolescence that he never had the opportunity to experience. Moments like this, in which he has to chase around your chaotic children and try not to get drunk on the sound of their elated and mischievous giggles, that he still doesn’t know if he’s earned it yet, despite the fact that he’s become a teddy bear in comparison to his own father.
The first time the two of you had discussed children you’d both agreed that one of you would be a stay-at-home parent, and at the time you’d been happy to follow in your mother’s footsteps and volunteer for the role. But then you fell pregnant and hesitated to submit your resignation papers so, in a moment of rushed and haphazard courage, Draco resigned instead and fully committed to the stay-at-home dad lifestyle, despite his perpetual fear of failure, so that you could have the advantage of both motherhood and a successful career. Draco hated his ministry job and you, paradoxically, did not- it was a win-win situation.
So now he stands in your living room, wearing an apron with your daughter’s favourite tv character on it, feeling very exasperated and out of sorts at the overwhelming responsibility of having to supervise your children’s playdates.
You walk into the living room and take in the scene- Cass, holding one of Draco’s old academic trophies as her and Jade run around with paint on their faces, and the boys wrestling on the ground, awkwardly close to the remnants of a broken vase- stopping behind your husband to wrap your arms around his waist and plop a kiss up onto his cheek. He softens into your touch and turns to kiss the side of your forehead before you sink off your tiptoes and onto the heels of your feet. “Need some help?”
To say that your twins are a handful would be an understatement, now add to that two other children with just as much chaotic energy? An absolute disaster. You’d told Draco that taking them to the zoo or the park for the playdate would’ve been a better idea but he insisted on celebrating the twin’s birthday at home and you’d obliged to his wishes. Now, he regrets not listening to you.
“If you don’t mind, that would be great.” He pouts at you and you laugh lightly at his frustration.
“Boys, break it up. Girls, freeze right now.” All the kids halt their movements and quickly turn their heads to face you with wide eyes, “There’s a cake that needs to be cut up and eaten in the next thirty minutes but I don’t think you have earned it.”
“No, we have!”
“Please mum? We’ve been good!”
Draco scoffs at your daughter’s blatant lie of having been good and you bite back a smile. “I’m sure you have, but if you really want the cake then I’m going to need you all to play a couple of games of hide and seek outside first. The winner gets the biggest slice.”
They all squeal in excitement and hurry to run out to the garden so that they can play. You quickly mutter a charm to repair the vase and turn to your husband who’s looking at you with a mixture of exhaustion and adoration.
“You’re my saviour.” He breathes out and you smile, “Somehow you spend less time with them and still manage to handle them better.”
“A mother’s touch love.” You giggle and give him a quick peck.
“I wish this mother would touch me.” He hints as he pulls you in by the waist with a grin.
“You’re so-“
A sharp cry from down the hall cuts you off and you both sigh. “I’ll go get him.” You reply.
“I’ll get the cake ready.”
~
The kids all come running into the kitchen excitedly at the sound of your voice calling for them to get cake. You smile at the sound of their giggles erupting into the kitchen as you play with the recently awoken baby in your arms, but your smile is gone as quick as it came at the sound of a light yelp and cry coming from one of the older kids.
Without missing a beat you rush toward the sound and find that it’s Jade harbouring a thin, but rather long, cut along the expanse of her leg and right below her knee. Draco can see that you’re moving to help her and he holds his hands out for the baby but you pay him no attention and, somehow, manage to lift the 8 year-old into your other arm and carry her up onto the kitchen counter- while still straddling your son on your hip.
“What happened sweetie?” You ask your friend’s daughter gently as you make to grab antiseptic, cotton wool and a bandage from under the sink- the place you and Draco had taken to storing them after the kids came back from playing outside with injuries one too many times.
“I think I scraped my leg against the edge of the little gate by the door.” She points toward the door that leads out to the garden and you nod in acknowledgement- knowing exactly which gate she’s referring to.
“Come here my little skittles, give mum some space to breathe.” Draco figures it’s best not to interrupt you and gestures for the other children to come toward him. They all shuffle their feet against the tile nervously as they keep their eyes trained on their friend.
“I’m so sorry love, we’ll make sure to get that fixed for next time you come over, yeah?” You ask her with furrowed eyebrows and she nods perkily. “This is going to hurt a bit, but I know that you’re a very brave girl so if you can close your eyes, count to ten for me and squeeze my hand that would be great.” She nods and follows your instructions- grabbing hold of your outstretched hand that sits underneath the baby’s bottom- while you dowse some cotton wool in antiseptic and drag it softly down the injury.
She winces but doesn’t cry, counting to ten as instructed and trying to focus on the promise of cake waiting or her, and soon enough you’ve already draped the bandage over her leg.
Draco watches the scene unfold with a look of admiration coating his features. It’s in this moment that he sees why you became an auror- no matter the situation you always present a fierce, prepared and oddly comforting energy- it’s one of the reasons he fell so deeply in love with you and it’s a quality of yours that he hopes both of your children will inherit.
“Thank you aunt Y/N.” She smiles up at you and your heart wrenches at the sight. You give her a kiss on the forehead and help her off the counter.
“You are very welcome, Jade. And I think you’ve earned the biggest slice of cake, what do you guys think?” You turn to the other children with an inquisitive gaze and they all nod quickly in agreement- wanting desperately to make their injured friend feel better. “Okay, bottoms in seats then!”
All the kids scramble to find seats around the table as you go about handing them each a plate with cake in it- making sure to give Jade the biggest slice.
Draco knows that he should feel envious at how easily you get the kids to bend at your will despite the fact that he spends way more time with them, but all he can feel is an immense sense of love and pride swelling in his heart. He feels soft.
He knows that the ‘woman can have it all’ mantra is often misleading and impractical but the truth is that you can have it all. Somehow you juggle your family and work so well it almost looks flawless, and while he knows how hard you work to keep it all steady, he still always finds himself speechless at how well you do it. Even after spending countless nights reassuring you that you’re not a bad mother for wanting a career, he can’t seem to understand why you’d ever doubt your abilities when he watches you in action.
Badass auror in the papers, loving mother in the house and generous lover in the-
“Draco?”
“Oh, sorry love, did you say something?” He blinks back his thoughts and smiles down at you.
You tilt your head backwards in a laugh and move to hand your husband the baby, “I was asking what you want to get for dinner? Blaise and Luna are picking up Jade and Liam soon so I thought that maybe we could just order in for dinner tonight?”
“That sounds lovely actually, I’m not particularly interested in cooking or eating Flora’s burnt food.” He says with a grimace- referring to your very incompetent house elf.
“You really should fire her.”
“She’s got nowhere else to go.” He pouts and you roll your eyes.
“When did you become so soft?” You raise your eyebrows at him and he shrugs as he watches you speak sweetly to your son that he’s got in his arms.
In that moment he already knows the answer, he became so soft the minute you came into his life, and he wouldn’t want it any other way.
“I won hide and seek by the way, so that cake was rightfully mine.” Scorpius grumbles out- even though he wears the signature Malfoy grin on his lips- and you all laugh at his random outburst.
<~>
So there’s my first ever request! I hope I did it justice, it was a little difficult to put someone else’s vision down and into words but it was a really nice challenge and I’d like to do more so please feel free to request moreeee.

Mamma’s Boy |Tom Holland|
A/N: I haven’t written for Tom for a while so here’s a small blurb
Warnings: absoultely none
Tumblr media
“Are you sure you'll be fine?” you ask Tom again.
“Yes, I can take care of my own kid, y/n. Now you go and break a leg, ok?”
“Alright but if-”
“If I need you, I'll give you a call, yes”
“Okay. Be a good boy, Max,” you lean forward and kiss little Max’s forehead. “Don’t cause too much trouble for daddy”
This was probably the first time in the past three years since he was born that you were leaving Max alone with Tom. You knew Tom could manage on his own but you couldn’t help but worry. You had to leave town for a day for your work, your natural response was to decline but when Tom insisted to you to go, you agreed. You felt that he needed some time alone with his son too, as he had to be away a lot.
When you reached the venue, you gave your husband a call to check if everything was alright.
“Yeah everything is fine. We played video games for a while and now he’s playing in the lawn, see I told you. You were worrying for no reason”
“Can I talk to him once?”
You hear Max shouting from a distance. “He’s ‘busy’ at the moment,” you could feel Tom air quoting, making you laugh.
“Okay, I’ll talk to you once the meeting is over”
After you hung up, Tom just started scrolling through his Instagram for not more than twenty seconds, when he heard a loud crash and Max crying outside.
He ran towards him, picking him up into his arms and gently rubbing his back.
“Oh it’s ok, it’s ok. Let’s get you inside”
“I want mommy!” Max cried.
“Buddy, mommy's working,” Tom looks at the little patches of blood on his knee and elbows. “Let’s just put some bandage on that and you’ll be good to go”
“No I want my mommy!” he tries to squirm out of his father’s arms.
“Mommy isn’t here, Max and we should not disturb her. Do you want to upset her while she’s working?”
He slowly shook his head but continued to cry. Tom brings him inside the house and cleans his wounds, covering them with some white bandages.
“Where is mamma?” he asks innocently again. “When will she be back?”
“She’ll be back in a while, till then let’s play some video games again, yeah?”
“No I want to have ice cream”
“Max, it’s winters. You can get sick”
“Mommy never buys me ice cream too,” he frowns.
Tom lets out a dramatic sigh, he was already tired. “Alright, let’s get some ice cream”
When you returned back home, you practically run towards the nursery. When Max saw you, he jumped out of Tom’s lap, sprinting to you.
“Oh baby what happened?” you pick him up and run your hand through his chocolate brown hair.
“I fell down on that rock thingie outside but mommy I didn’t cry at all, I’m so brave,” he says in his adorable three year old voice proudly.
“Aww it’s okay if you did cry, darling. You're my brave boy, right?” he nuzzles his head in your shoulder, feeling your soft hair on his face.
“Why didn't you call me? You said you will!” you turn to Tom.
“I sent you a text and everything went just fine-”
“You sent me a text after the meeting was over, I would have come back immediately”
“Exactly. That’s why I didn’t call you. I handled it, y/n”
“You didn’t. Look what happened, he ended up hurting himself”
“He just scraped his knee and just hit his elbows a little, he’ll be good in a day”
You sigh and take Max back to the nursery, where he told you all about what he did the whole day. After half an hour when he was asleep, you find Tom sitting in the living room going mindlessly through Max’s storybooks.
“What are you reading?”
“I have no idea, what the hell is this? We never had these stories when we were kids,” he shows you the book.
“Times have changed since then,” you chuckle. “So are you gonna tell me what’s wrong?”
“I don’t know, y/n. I feel like such a failure. My own son doesn't give a shit about me. All he wants is you. I mean I'm his dad too”
“Tom, you’ve been away so much. He just doesn’t spend much time with you”
“Then what am I supposed to do? He doesn’t even want to see me”
“What are you talking about? You have no idea how excited he gets when he sees your movies. He misses you so much, Tom. You just need to spend some time with him, like today”
“But I messed up today”
“What makes you think I don’t mess up? This is what it’s like, messing up and correcting them together. And you know, the fact that you’re so concerned, already makes you such a good father”
“Are you sure nothing will go wrong?”
“Yes, and even if it does, I’ll always be here,” you say kissing his cheek.

Tumblr media
Life has been kind to you, a daughter, two sons and a kind husband. Nothing that you wanted or worked for hasn’t not worked out the way you wanted it to. When you were twenty five you met your husband, Jinyoung. He helped you through life and helped you take care of the kids. Even the one that wasn’t his. Jihyo wasn’t his child and yet he loved her with all the love he could give her.
Jinyoung passed away about twelve years ago due to heart failure. You felt bad that you didn’t grieve like your children did, you didn’t love him like that, you never did. He was more like a best friend than a lover. A man, who died before Jihyo was born, owned your heart and he knew that.
Jung Hoseok, that was his name. Now, even though you weren’t able to move the way you wanted to, you could feel your body move to his. He was a great dancer and he loved dancing, no matter where, no matter who saw him, he danced like no one ever could. It made you feel light, oh so light. The feeling he gave you was indescribable, not a single person ever made you feel this way again.
“Mum, wake up” you hear Jaebeom's voice. Your second oldest visits when he can. You appreciate the effort. “Mum, wake up. It’s your birthday and we want to celebrate with you.” Your eyes open slower than you want and behind droopy eyes you see the faces of your children, Jaebeom, Jihyo and Youngjae. A smile plasters itself on your wrinkly face.
“My babies, what brings you here” Youngjae rolls his eyes at you as he chuckles “It’s your birthday today. We want to celebrate with you” you gasp slightly, trying to sound surprised. Of course you know, the day you were born is the same day the love of your life left this planet. “Don’t act like you don’t know. Your brain works faster than you give it credit, Mum” Jihyo laughs. You chuckle and wave her off.
“Look, Mum. We actually wanted to tell you something” Jaebeom starts and your laugh dies right there. His tone doesn’t excite you, not in the slightest. “What, honey?” your hand finds his and he assures you with a small smile “We all know how your chances of living another year stand. The cancer has spread and your body won’t withstand it any longer.” You nod, that you are going to die, pretty soon, is nothing new. You are prepared and so are your children.
“We thought about a way to make it more comfortable” Jihyo continues and your brows furrow. You talked about hospice, and you didn’t like it. Why are they bringing this up again? “Jihyo, hun. I am not going to leave the country to die.” Youngjae shakes his head and grasps your other hand. “No, mum. We are talking about a way of you getting to live forever, in peace and without pain. You might have heard of Daydream. It’s a non profit organisation which makes it possible to transfer one's consciousness to their database and to a place called Base Line. “
Your brain is running miles as soon as he starts to talk about “base line”. You know exactly what he is talking about, he used to talk about it all the time. Hoseok liked the idea of being together in eternity. “We thought about it. Since you’re not willing to die early and we all know about your undying love for a man who died a long time ago. We were able to get you a spot in daydream. They are willing to download you and give you what you craved for all these years.”
Your mind goes into panic. How can you live forever, forever in a place that Hoseok dreamed about?. How can you spend your eternity with Jinyoung when the person you so dearly love isn’t him? “Jaebeom, honey. I can’t, you don’t know what you are talking ab-”Mum we know. We’ve known for years.” Youngjae almost whispers. Your eyes snap to his and you can see the sincerity. “What?” the whisper leaves your lips, it almost sounded like a whimper, so pathetic. “We’ve known for a long time that your love wasn’t his. Dad was never the man you loved, it was Jung Hoseok, Jihyos father.”
Your eyes fill with tears. They knew, they knew everything. Secrets you kept in the deepest depths of your mind have been discovered all these years ago. Your life was a lie, everything you lived to protect was a lie. “I-I-don’t-”Mum, it’s alright. We are not angry with you.” you start to cry. A violent yelp leaves your lips as all of the thoughts, emotions, memories flood back into your mind. The pain you feel is unbearable, it makes you double over in the comfort of your bed. Youngjae holds your shaking form, whispering comforting words.
“But h-he didn’t-”He did, mum. He was able to get a spot as a beta test person almost fifty years ago. His download was saved on their server. They opened his interview file about twenty years ago and tried to contact you. His reason for joining the program was you, mum. He wanted to find a way to stay with you for the rest of eternity. Dad kept it a secret but we want you to be happy. We want you to be free of pain and live a happy life with the person you love, with Hoseok.” Youngjae sobbs.
You can’t believe it. All these years he was merely miles away. The person who made you feel how no one else could, the love of your life was a few hours away from you.
xxxxx
The car ride is long, almost seven hours to go, but you don’t mind. While your children call their families, read their books or listen to their music you reminisce, you reminisce about the moments you spent with him. The memories you made with him come back.
“Come on, give it a shot.” you frown, the thought of embarrassing yourself further displeases you a lot. He smiled at you with his hands out for you. His brown straight hair frames his handsome features perfectly. The softness of his skin, the lightliness of his smile and his comforting smell that coats the air. Everything makes you smile back at him.
“You know i can’t dance, i much rather watch you dancing” it makes him chuckle and his head falls back with a wide smile plastered on his face. He shakes his head and comes closer, almost too close. A step closer and you are pressed against each other, even with the step in between you, you can feel him. The warmth, the comfort and the love.
“I don’t care about your dancing skills. I want you to have fun with me. How about this, you put your feet on mine and I guide you.” a grin escapes your features and he takes it as a yes as he pushes your feet over his. “Just follow my rhythm, I’m right here, i’ll always be” you nod and lean your head on his chest. You can hear his heartbeat, the way he breathes and the way he hums the melody to stay on tact.
“That’s it baby, just like that. You’re a natural, you’ll master the wedding dance in a heartbeat” your eyes find his as his sentence reaches your ears. He would want to marry you? “Wedding dance?” you whisper and he halts his movements. His searching eyes study yours, trying to find displeasure. “Well, yes. I would love to be married to you. No one else should be by your side, not that anyone is better than me” he chuckles and you can’t help but laugh as well.
No one was ever better than you.
“Go to sleep, mum. We have one more hour to go” Jihyo whispers behind you and puts you to sleep with a gentle rub on your shoulder. Once again you reminisce in memories, in more painful ones.
“Don’t you understand where i’m coming from? Why are you so blind, i can’t have a child right now” you shout. He rubs his temples with a frown. “I’m not forcing you to have a child, I just want to know if you want to ever-in the future- have a child with me.” he shouts back at you, the tone in his voice was angry, very angry.
Your eyes are wide and wet, trenched in tears as you back away. He doesn’t care though, he is too busy throwing the next mug on the floor. “Is it me? Would you have a child with someone else because I'm such a mess? Am i not responsible enough? Am I not enough?” he shouts and throws the plate to the floor. Porcelain shatters on the wooden floor with such anger. You’ve never seen him like this, ever and it scares you.
“No, why would you not be enough?” he laughs in the midst of his emotional breakdown. “Because it damn fucking looks like it. Did you already cheat on me, huh? Is that why you’re so damn quiet?” he steers and all you see is red. You almost sprint over to him, your body finds it’s way over the tiny kitchen island like it has done it a million times, it seems so easy. Your hand connects with his cheek with such speed that you are afraid you might’ve knocked some of his teeth out.
Hot tears coat your cheeks as you try to find your words “Don’t you ever accuse me of cheating on you. I know you are angry but this is low, very low.” you whisper. His angry eyes shut and he shoves you out of his way. He grabs the car keys and almost kicks the door open
“I’ll be out for a while, don’t wait for me”
You jolt awake with a loud gasp “Don’t go” you whisper through tears. Just as you see your son in front of you, you realise that it’s not this day, the day he left you. “Mum, are you alright?” Jihyo has a hand on your shoulder in concern. You quickly wipe the tears away to hide your emotional rukus. “Look, we’re here. Right there is the facility” Youngjae points at the big building up the road. “You almost made it, mum” Jihyo beems at you. Your little girl smiles at you with such compassion. It’s something only children are able to do, look at their parents with such love, with such adoration. Having to leave them behind weighs heavy on your heart.
xxxxx
“Mrs. Y/LN, here you will have some time to say goodbye and talk about whatever you might want to share with your family. After you are done we will inform you about the process of downloading and what we know about Jung Hoseok.” a young lady, not older than your daughter, informs you.
All of you sit down, a heavy silence dominates the room. No one is brave enough to say something, to say goodbye. “I love you-”Mum, you don’t have to-”No, Jihyo, i have to. I want you to know. I love you all so much, and I would stay much much longer by your side, if I could.” your hand finds Youngjae’s and a shaky breath leaves his mouth “Mum” Youngjae whispers.
“I’m sorry that I won’t see you children grow up, Youngjae. I’m sorry that i won’t see you get married, Jaebeom. And I’m mostly sorry that you will never see your father, Jihyo. Hoseok would’ve been such a good father. I’m sorry that things haven’t always worked out the way I wanted them to. But I’m honored to call you my children. I’m so proud of you, of everyone of you. You made me the happiest mother there could ever be. I love you and I hope that you’ll remember me as such. Not the weak, ill woman I was the past seven years. I want you to remember me as the woman who raised you, the woman who loved to dance, the woman who was strong. Do me a favor and remember me as such.”
Jihyo sobbs against your shoulder and you let her. In merely a few moments they won’t have a mother anymore. They’ll be without the support of a lifetime, without their lifeline. Without the person who gave them shelter and love, their mother.
“We’ll always remember you as the strongest woman there ever was, as our mother” Jaebeom whispers under tears. You smile and pet his head like you used to when he was little. “I’ll miss you” “Mrs. Y/LN, the transfer is ready” you are quick to stand up. “Go, live your life. Don’t be sad for too long. Grieve and cry but afterwards you have to live. Promise me to live” you grin in pain. With a kiss to each of their faces you leave the room.
xxxxx
The corridor to the room the woman is bringing you seems endless. The time it takes you to get to your love seems endless. But as she sits you down on a comfortable blue chair your heart calms down.
“My name is Nayeon and I’ll inform you about the process of downloading. We’ll connect your brain to our core and transfer your consciousness to one of our memory bots. Jung Hoseok, the man you so desperately want to meet again, was downloaded on an older memory bot. He was saved on a almost twenty year old bot when we found him so we had to transfer him to one of our younger bot models to guarantee a safe connection to our station “base line” and to your memory bot. The bot wasn’t damaged in the slightest. His consciousness was copied, as for yours is being transferred, meaning that your body won’t be usable after your download. Do you understand? Do you still want to proceed?”
“yes”
She puts several sensors on your head and injects a chip into your right temple for the transfer. Weirdly enough, your head is empty. You expected your head to run wild as soon as they started your transfer. “In less than two minutes you’ll go unconscious and wake up in the superficial world base line. Your bot will be securely stored and taken care of. I wish you a comfortable journey. bon voyage
xxxxx
You awake with a small groan as the bright sunlight burns itself into your skin. The gentle wind glides through your hair and slightly dries your eyes as you pry them open. You can smell the salty sea air and feel the rays of sunshine.
The bed you are lying in is big and comfortable, almost as comfortable as the bed you shared with Hoseok. Speaking of Hoseok, why isn’t he here? Isn’t he supposed to welcome you? Your feet find the floor as fast as possible as you run across the room. Just seconds before you dare to leave the room you catch a glimpse of the mirror facing the beach. You see yourself, not the almost seventy year old you, no, the twenty year old you. The firm skin, the still colored hair and the healthy looking body you once had faced you.
You breathlessly stumble towards the mirror to take a closer look and then, then you see him. You’re able to see the reflection of his back through the mirror. Your head whips around and you start to run. The pain, the love, all of the emotions you kept inside of you all of those years made you sprint, stumble towards him. “Hos-Hoseok!” you scream. You run with all of your strength, you hurry to the man you’ve missed so much. “God, Hoseok!” and the moment he turns around you halt. All of your limbs stop moving.
His golden skin, his beautiful face make you stop. You can’t believe that he is here, right here after all these years. “Ho-Hoseok” you manage to sobb. His face morphs into a smile as he opens his arms. “Come on, come to me, my love”
And you run again, you sprint into his arms. His warm body embraces you as you crash.
The weight pulling the both of you to the ground.
“I thought I lost you” you sobb as he strokes your hair.
“I promised you to find a way to stay by your side forever.”

*❤️Nine Lives- (FF.net) When Adrien Agreste is scheduled to go to a Military School in Germany, Chat Noir must make a critical decision. Does he give up his Miraculous? Or does he give up his life as Adrien? I’ll save you the trouble of guessing, he gives up being Adrien.

~Much Obliged- Everyone deals with grief differently. Some take to drinking, others devote themselves to charity. Adrien Agreste? Well, he became a cowboy. Marinette Dupain-Cheng is a witch, one of very few in the world. She knows what it’s like to be doubted, and assumed delusional. Maybe that’s why they got along so well. Or maybe it’s just because they both like big hats. AU where everything is the same, except instead of superheroes, Adrien is a Cowboy and Marinette is a witch. (Unfinished) (Based on a AU by @bugaboo-n-bananoir)
