I hate mayonnaise with a burning passion. I can't even smell it without gagging because my parents used it as a lice treatment when I was a kid. The school nurse perpetuated a lice outbreak for months because she checked everyone's hair with the same comb without cleaning it, Typhoid Marying all of us over and over and over again before she finally got fired and replaced. Each time my siblings and I caught lice, my parents would slather our scalps in mayonnaise and make us marinate in a shower cap for hours. This was 20 years ago, but I will never decouple the smell of mayonnaise from the most unpleasant recurring experience of my childhood. I would never willingly put it in my mouth because all I can think about is how it's full of dead lice and hair. It's revolting, and I can't enjoy chicken sandwiches.
