Listening No Surprises and all I can think about are scenarios/fanfics with the characters who's traumas are overlooked gave up on everything and just move in a cottage, they'll take a quiet life, with no alarms and no surprises.

And I can imagine it being a crossover !- What ? A crossover between Good Omens, Doctor Who, Supernatural, Sherlock and (possible) Harry Potter with that scenario ? More probable that you think !-

Bloomsbury has acquired a companion book to the BBC television series “Ghosts”. Katy Follain, head of Bloomsbury general, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to Ghosts: The Button House Archives from Paul Stevens at Independent Talent. It is her first acquisition since she joined Bloomsbury. The companion book will be published on 26th October 2023. “Ghosts” was first broadcast in 2019 and has been nominated for multiple national comedy awards. It returns for the final season this September. The tie-in book is described as “a hilarious, colourful and entertaining compendium of surviving artefacts and documents relating to the ghosts of Button House’s past lives”. Ghosts: The Button House Archives will be written by Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond – six of the ghosts who also co-starred in the franchise Horrible Histories. They will be signing books at events around the country in the run-up to Christmas. They said: “We started kicking around the idea of a ‘Ghosts’ companion book quite early on in the life of the series and got very excited about how the characters could show up in all kinds of documents and artefacts. We’re delighted to finally be bringing this idea to life with Bloomsbury to produce something we hope fans will treasure.” Follain added: “To be working with this hugely talented group of writers on the tie-in book of such a massively popular comedy series is complete heaven. It combines everything I want the non-fiction Bloomsbury General list to be: quality and best-in-show entertainment with broad appeal. It’s actually odd that modern Les Mis adaptations never really seem to take the interpretation that Jean Valjean is suffering from severe trauma/PTSD?

You would think that’d be the most obvious road for a modern adaptation to take— especially because “the lasting trauma of incarceration that continues even after a sentence ends” is still a very relevant Thing.

In the original novel, as I’ve mentioned before, reading the descriptions of Jean Valjean’s personality are often just like reading down a list of PTSD symptoms. He has flashbacks at reminders of prison, he has “panic attacks” at the idea of prison where he loses touch with reality and feels the desperate need to run/hide even when he’s not actually being pursued, he is obsessively avoidant of talking about his trauma to anyone, he deprives himself of food and warmth in fits of self-harm, he isolates himself from other people, he throws himself into dangerous situations with little regard for his own life, and so on and so on.

But it feels like adaptations either take the interpretation of “Jean Valjean is a saint” (the musical/2012 film) or they swerve in the other direction of “Jean Valjean is a violent Criminal(tm) who constantly flies into dangerous rages” (bbc Les mis, Les mis 1998.)

While I obviously prefer the musical and think it’s closer to the spirit of the book…. I’m so confused that people who try to write a “gritty/realistic” Jean Valjean are just like “he’s a criminal so he must be Violent, the way criminals are.”

Because again, book Jean Valjean is a deeply flawed character! He’s full of repressed anger/trauma, and makes kind selfless sacrifices but also horrible self-destructive decisions. He’s excessively conciliatory and conflict-avoidant and self-effacing. His relationship with Cosette is complicated and fraught, even though it’s kind and loving. I think if you had any investment in portraying “the lasting trauma of incarceration on the people who suffer through it,” it really wouldn’t be that hard to make Jean Valjean’s characterization very immediately relevant to a modern audience.

'When Cillian Murphy took to the podium during Sunday night’s Golden Globes, his nose smudged in his wife’s lipstick, it was as if a door had opened on this Hollywood Neverland and an ambassador for the real world had stepped through.

Accepting the Best Actor in a Drama award for Oppenheimer, Murphy wasn’t so much un-starry as stonkingly everyday. Here was a normal person who had somehow beamed into peak Tinseltown and, if pleased, was also clearly a bit perplexed by it all.

The Oppenheimer win has made Murphy a frontrunner for the Oscars. In all likelihood, he will be up against a creepy Barry Keoghan in Saltburn, an overblown Bradley Cooper in Maestro, and a fervent Leonard DiCaprio in Killers of the Flower Moon. With the arguable exception of the grandstanding Cooper, all would be worthy winners. And yet, underdogs everywhere will be cheering for Murphy. He’s spent the past 20 years negotiating Hollywood on his own terms and has rejected Tinseltown’s showiness in favour of staying grounded and playing the long game.

Murphy always wanted to be an actor rather than a star. Such a choice could easily have condemned him to a lifetime of supporting roles. Or a hiatus in TV, to which he seemed exiled when he settled in for a long run as Tommy Shelby in Birmingham noir Peaky Blinders.

But his decision to turn away from flashy parts has proved inspired. He is that rarest of things: an experienced A-list actor who comes to the Oscars without baggage. Unlike DiCaprio, he hasn’t had to overcome a past life as a teen pin-up. Nor does he have to justify a lucrative stint in comic book films, as Cooper has with his time as Rocket Racoon in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Above all, Murphy goes into Oscar season as an antidote to the “look at me!” culture of the social media era. In an age when fame is regarded as the ultimate commodity – more important than awards or critical acclaim – Murphy would rather let his work speak for itself. He lives humbly in suburban Dublin with his wife and two children – and his great passion outside of acting is music, as demonstrated by his semi-regular presenting slot on BBC 6 Music.

That’s lifetimes removed from Hollywood, with its self-mythologising and turbo-charged fakeness. It is also of a piece with his career since he broke through playing a survivor of the zombie apocalypse in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later. Ever since, he has chosen his jobs thoughtfully. In so doing, he has assembled a body of work of which he can be proud.

He hasn’t been above popcorn. He was a memorable villain in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, where he played the Scarecrow as a trippy nightmare. But even when shooting for the box office, Murphy has been studiedly un-starry. Careful to keep his ego in check, he’s often happy in an ensemble – hugging the background in A Quiet Place II and settling for an extended cameo in Nolan’s Dunkirk, where he was content to let Harry Styles and Tom Hardy hog the spotlight.

Hog it they did – yet it was Murphy who proved to be in it for the long road. Because he could go into Oppenheimer without a Hollywood aura, he disappeared into the role. If hardly obscure, he nonetheless assimilated fully into the part. Throughout that film, you were aware of its stars. Florence Pugh and Emily Blunt doing their best with under-written female characters. Robert Downey Jr trying to pretend he hadn’t spent a decade as Iron Man.

Murphy, by contrast, split the acting atom. He vanished into Oppenheimer with a performance that exuded humility and sincerity. Bookies have now installed him as a favourite for the Best Actor Oscar. If he wins, it would be a victory for knowing who you are and what you stand for and believing good work has value beyond short-term acclaim. Above all, his success shows that it is possible to stay grounded while scaling Hollywood’s giddiest heights.'

Hi love! Here are some of the best ways/resources I've found to stay updated on current events & lifelong learning:

Subscribing to daily newsletters like DailySkimm, The Morning, and Morning Brew for current events & news updates and industry-focused newsletters to stay up-to-date in my field (for me, I subscribe to Business of Fashion's Daily Digest, Glossy POP, and Vogue/Vogue Business's newsletters)

Read publications including New York Times, Wall Street Journal, BBC, The Economist, The New Yorker, etc., and more industry-focused publications for fashion/beauty/marketing & advertising/digital strategy daily (or at least 5 days a week)

Keep and work through a reading list for the quarter. I try to read at least two self-development/psychology/health and industry/career-focused books per quarter; sometimes, I'll throw in a biography, finance, art, history, philosophy, or literary book in too for more variety/to expand my worldly knowledge

Take at least 1-2 courses and certification classes per quarter (either through Google, LinkedIn Courses or Assessments, Youtube, Masterclass, Skillshare, Udemy, etc.)

Frequently listen to TED talks on YouTube and podcasts (mainly on Spotify & Apple Podcasts)

Attend virtual panels and talks in areas of interest

Have conversations with insightful people (mentors, colleagues, and the amazing individuals I get to call my closest friends)

Three ships: WinterIron. Sherstrade. Dreville. 

First ever ship: Probably Buffy and Spike. But I heard about fandoms and fanfiction because of Sherlock BBC and Johnlock. I also wrote my first ficlet for them. 

Last song/album is: Endless Summer Vacation by Miley Cyrus. I’m even thinking of buying the CD so I can listen to it in my car. 

Last movie: Pirates of the Caribbean on the tv (always enjoy those movies!) . Knives Out: Glass Onion on Netflix (that one was hilarious and I loved it)

Currently reading: The Hunger Games, book 1. (I bought the box set with the one book included). And I’m reading Winter’s End by  ali_aliska I don’t care that it’s not finished, the words that are out are so good, I’m finding it very comforting. 

Currently watching: I’m following Perry Mason. And I just watched Moon Knight on Disney+  Not sure what I will watch next, I have a list on both Disney+ and Netflix of shows and series I want to try. 

Currently consuming: Nothing at the moment. 

Currently craving: For this day to be over. Or at least for the funeral to be over.

Could I request BBC Sherlock with a “proper genius” artist reader. They’re smart but not obvious. Reader comes to Baker Street 221C for a flat and is able to deduce why the flat hasn’t been for sale and Sherlock overhears.

-I take a step inside and take a breath. The smell of mold, mildew, and fungi... as well as... blood.

-“How long has it been?”

-“Since what?”

-“Since the murder.” The music stops.

-She sighs, “5 years, not a tenant since then.”

-“If I take this flat... would you mind if I renovated it a bit?” Footsteps from upstairs.

-“Dearie, if you take this flat I’ll give you a discount.” She states. Stops at the bottom.

You looked around the flat and raised your eyebrows. For a flat with such low rent to be on the market for this long there must’ve been something wrong with it. You pursed your lips as you walked around, your potential landlady hovering by the door. You ventured into the living room Mrs Hudson following closely. Above you, you heard floorboards creak and the sound of a violin.

So thin floorboards. You could see why that might put some people off. Still, not enough of a reason to still be on the market.

“And how long has it been empty?” you asked

“Five years,” Mrs Hudson said, “I’ll give it a proper airing before you move in. If,” she added quickly, “you decide to take it.”

You couldn’t help but smile at the hopeful tone in her voice. Still, it bothered you that it hadn’t been rented out for so long. Maybe there was an issue with neighbours? Or maybe there were structural issues? Or-

You paused at a wall. You cocked your head and raised a hand at the flaking plaster.

“Yes,” Mrs Hudson said, “I am aware of that. I know it doesn’t give the best impression but I assure you-”

“So someone was killed here.”

You certainly weren’t giving the best impression of being a possible tenant by interrupting but now you were curious. You looked over your shoulder and smiled at Mrs Hudson who didn’t even try to hide her shocked expression.

“How did you work that out?” she asked

“Well when I was at uni I shared a flat with someone who was studying forensics. I was studying fine art but I was curious so listened in while she ranted about her course. She even let me read her course books although she was surprised. Just because I’m an artist doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate, and be interested in, other subjects.”

You shrugged and continued to walk about the room.

“You’d be surprised what you can pick up just by listening. I may not have attended any of the lectures but I got a decent understanding of what she was studying. Which included the effects that blood can have on its surroundings if it isn’t properly cleaned up. Which includes plaster.”

You gestured to the wall and smiled.

“Even after five years you can tell.”

You frowned when you realised that something had stopped. Mrs Hudson had stopped speaking a while back but it wasn’t that. You looked up and smirked when you realised that the violin had stopped.

“So can I have it?” you sked with a small smile

“My dear,” Mrs Hudson placed a hand on your shoulder, “of course. I’ll start getting the paperwork ready.”

“And, err, one other thing.”

“Yes?”

“I am still an artist and I would love to be able to paint the walls. I know it’s an unusual request…”

You trailed off and Mrs Hudson pursed her lips.

“Usually I’d say no,” she said, “but because of what you did earlier I’ll give it some consideration.”

You smiled and nodded. To be honest, that was the reaction you were expecting. The two of you headed towards the door and you heard someone thumping down the stairs. Ah, this must be  your new neighbour.

“Sherlock,” Mrs Hudson beamed, “I thought I heard you playing. Don’t you have a case on at the moment?”

Sherlock stared at you for a moment before turning his attention to Mrs Hudson.

“I do and I was working on it.” he asked sharply

“Sounded like you were playing the violin.” you said

“It helps me think,” he replied, “And who are you?”

“Y/n L/n,” you held out a hand, “your new neighbour. Nice to meet you!”

Sherlock looked down at your hand and grunted and didn’t take it. You lowered it slowly as he glanced towards your future flat.

“I know what you must be thinking-” you started

“I doubt that.” interrupted Sherlock

“Why would someone want to move into a flat where a murder took place.”

Sherlock looked over at you sharply and you couldn’t help but smile. Looked like you caught him out.

“Well,” you followed Mrs Hudson who was beckoning you away, “looks like you have another mystery to solve.”

David as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing (the first time he did it, that is!)

David Tennant fans are aware of 2011's brilliant Much Ado About Nothing, in which DT starred as Benedick, alongside Catherine Tate as Beatrice. Filmed at the Wyndham's Theatre in London and directed by Josie Rourke, the production was recorded and offered on Digital Theatre.

But did you know David had played Benedick before?

Yep - he sure has!

It was in 2001, a full decade before his production with Catherine.

Beginning in 1999, BBC Radio 3 launched Shakespeare For The Millennium, an ambitious project to dramatize seventeen Shakespeare productions in four years.

The project was done in collaboration with BBC Worldwide, which emphasized it wanted to take a contemporary, innovative approach to the Bard. It launched on 12 September 1999 with a Shakespeare discussion panel, and a new production of Hamlet -- starring none other than Michael Sheen as the Dane!

On 23 September 2001, BBC Radio 3 broadcast a new production of Much Ado About Nothing as the Sunday Play, with David in the lead role as Benedick and Samantha Spiro as Beatrice. Adapted by Sally Avens, it featured an introduction (as had all the previous productions in the Shakespeare For The Millennium series) by Richard Eyre, the former Director of the Royal National Theatre.

The production also starred a few other recognizable names. There was Chiwetel Ejiofor as Claudio, Emilia Fox as Hero, David Swift as Leonato, Julian Rhind-Tutt as Don John, and David Haig as Dogberry.

All original music was composed and performed by Simon Oakes and Adam Wolters.

Much Ado About Nothing was commercially released by BBC Worldwide as part of the BBC Radio collection series in 2001.

The sleeve notes of cassettes and CDs of the production include a scene-by-scene synopsis, a full character analysis, and an essay on interpretation from the director Sally Avens.

Almost four years later, in November 2005, BBC One broadcast a television series called ShakespeaRe-Told, a set of four adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. Each play was adapted by a different writer, and all were relocated to the present day.

The first to be broadcast - on 7 November 2005 - was a modern-day version of Much Ado About Nothing starring Sarah Parrish and Damien Lewis...and Billie Piper and Nina Sosanya and Olivia Colman!

Six days after this television broadcast - on 13 November 2005 at 7:15 pm - BBC Radio 3 re-broadcast the audio version starring David and Samantha in its 'Drama On 3' slot.

Fast forward to August 2020.

The BBC released a set of four BBC Radio Shakespeare collections: Histories, Comedies, Tragedies, and Roman Plays. Much Ado About Nothing was included in the collection of Comedies, and became available as an Audible digital download.

Producer Runaway Entertainment is delighted to announce the stellar cast for the critically acclaimed, smash hit, supernatural thriller 2:22 - A Ghost Story opening at Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre this summer for its debut Irish performances.

Shona McGarty (Eastenders) will play Jenny, Jay McGuiness (The Wanted, BIG! The Musical, Rip It Up), who is currently on the UK tour in 2:22 - A Ghost Story, will play Ben, Colin O'Donoghue (Once Upon A Time, The Tudors, The Right Stuff, The Gray House) will play Sam with Laura Whitmore (Love Island, Finding Joy, Queenie, and Jenny in 2.22: A Ghost Story in her West End debut) stepping into the role of Lauren.

The very special, standalone Irish production, produced for Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre, will open on Thursday 20th June 2024 with performances until Sunday 11th August 2024 - for a strictly limited run only.

2:22 - A Ghost Story began in summer 2021 at the Noël Coward Theatre, starring Lily Allen, Julia Chan, Hadley Fraser and Jake Wood, and where it won the WhatsOnStage award for Best Play. It then transferred to the Gielgud Theatre for 10 weeks from 4 December 2021. The production there starring Stephanie Beatriz, James Buckley, Elliot Cowan and Giovanna Fletcher completed its run on 12 February 2022. For the first season at the Criterion (May - September 2022) the cast was Tom Felton, Mandip GIll, Sam Swainsbury and Beatriz Romilly. In late September Laura Whitmore, Matt Willis, Felix Scott and Tamsin Carroll took over. 

The box office record-breaking run at the Lyric starring Cheryl, Jake Wood, Scott Karim, and Louise Ford, concluded its run on 23 April. The West End season at the Apollo Theatre starred Sophia Bush, Frankie Bridge, Ricky Champ, Clifford Samuel and Jaime Winstone, and set off on its UK tour in Autumn 2023 with Joe Absolom, Charlene Boyd, Nathaniel Curtis and Louisa Lytton in the cast. Current cast on the UK tour: Vera Chok (Lauren); Jay McGuiness (Ben); George Rainsford (Sam); Fiona Wade (Jenny).

2:22 is written by award-winning writer Danny Robins, creator of the hit BBC podcast The Battersea Poltergeist, and is directed by Matthew Dunster and Isabel Marr; it’s an adrenaline-filled night where secrets emerge and ghosts may or may not appear…
