the way scar and pearl have been dancing around each other all season, from scar's task about hyping her up all session, to him calling her sunflower, to his opposite task forcing him to start hating on her, and them continuously not really knowing where they stand with each other. only for them to end up being the two of them against the world. pearl asking him to kill her (a role that was once his; "you may slay me" echoes in his ears - now he is the one looking down at the one kneeling in the water) and him refusing to, saying they will go out together.

their final duel ending with that decisive lightning strike, yet scar's so shocked he doesn't even realize what's happened. it's only when grian, who was once in his shoes, at the beginning of all of this, whispers "she's dead scar. you won" that he realizes he's somehow done it. the loneliness of a snowy mountain has ended differently this time. and it being grian of all people to make him realize. now he knows what it is like to be the winner. now he knows what it was like to be left in that empty world. how hollow victory seems to feel, in the end.

i said this in the tags of another post but. the way that the desert always seems to PHYSICALLY pop up whenever scar and grian are together is insane. first them finding the only tiny patch of desert in double life, and now a desert appearing in front of them right as they're laughing together and riding on a llama camel. like we all know this but MAN. they seriously never left the desert. it's become a symbol of their past together, and they can't escape it.

i cant get over the fact that now both grian AND scar have, separately, BOTH had instances in limited life of instinctively falling back into their old dynamic despite not being on the same team and not even really interacting much this season. 

scar just SAW grian standing (while afk) and got flashbacks to double life, feeling like he was mad at him, that he had done something wrong. 

and now grian sees joel recklessly jumping off a ledge and instinctively screams SCAR’S name before realizing he had done so and said it was “force of habit”. 

they really can’t escape each other... even in this new life where they’ve been apart from each other most of the time, it’s painfully obvious that on some level mentally, they are still together, still in that desert, or standing amongst bamboo. 

and worst of all, THEY DON’T KNOW THAT THE OTHER IS ALSO FEELING LIKE THIS because neither of them were around to hear the other’s words. scar wasn’t there when grian called his name out of habit, and grian wasn’t conscious to hear how just the sight of him makes scar feel like he’s screwed up. god i want to eat myself alive

i think what gets me about the ark raid is that it was like. a whole event. maria didnt just die suddenly without warning. she and shadow had to run through their home, maybe even past the dead bodies of people they had lived alongside, knowing that at any moment they could be found and killed as well. it wasn't sudden, nor was it even a situation where they were specifically being hunted down. obviously the point of the raid was to end project shadow but the violence itself was senseless. they weren't specifically trying to kill shadow or maria, they were just killing everyone. something about that just makes it so much more real and horrific. cause that's how it goes in real life usually, doesnt it. no discrimination when it comes to who's killed; just whoever happens to be in the wrong place in the wrong time. maria's death didn't come out of nowhere; it came after however long of her and shadow running for their lives, knowing they could die at any moment. the longer i think about it the more gut wrenching it is
